[SPEAKER_02]: Hello!
0:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to the EvansTV NFL podcast, Nat Albert Brear, I'm Conoror, the Monday episode we taped, got loaded into a grenade launcher and fired into the sun.
0:16
[SPEAKER_02]: Forget about everything else.
0:17
[SPEAKER_02]: Forget about what we were talking about.
0:19
[SPEAKER_02]: AJ Brown gets traded.
0:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Miles Garrick gets traded.
0:23
[SPEAKER_02]: One significantly more surprising, I think, than the other Albert and
0:29
[SPEAKER_02]: It's one of those days that reminds you of why this is the greatest sport.
0:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Again, we had months to think about the AJ Brown Patriots trade.
0:41
[SPEAKER_02]: We knew everything.
0:42
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we could diagnose that from all angles.
0:45
[SPEAKER_02]: You had been hinting for weeks that the Rams had another swing in them.
0:50
[SPEAKER_02]: I did not, in my wildest imagination, think that that swing was Miles Garrett.
0:55
[SPEAKER_02]: And those are the trades Albert.
0:57
[SPEAKER_02]: teams going for teams making it happen with June 1st being now really like an exciting another part of this deadline.
1:05
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we'll start with the Rams.
1:08
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what a move.
1:10
[SPEAKER_02]: I think this puts them squarely in Super Bowl or bus territory.
1:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the reason thing about it is you think about it, right?
1:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And like, let's go back to last year, I think we'd agree that the NFC title game was the de facto Super Bowl and had it not been for that whole thing with the two point conversion in Zack Sharp and a on that Thursday night in December.
1:30
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe we're talking about the Super Bowl champions here, right?
1:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're bringing that team back basically in tact minus Jared verse plus miles Garrett and trying to make doffy right I mean and it's like I know Matthew staffers a year old or Devonti Adams is a year old this is not perfect right but I I just like it it's such an interesting thing and I think.
2:02
[SPEAKER_01]: For the Rams to do this, and I go back to just like March, and when they didn't wind up doing an AJ Brown deal and how that opened up thinking for them on where is our big swing and what can we do?
2:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And they had already had at that point trying to make Duffy in their back pocket, and
2:23
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, to spin that into, let's go circle back on Miles Garrett and at the draft for them and they're thinking to be if we get our quarter back now and I've said this a few times right like I told everyone that was less and like like don't look at this as a move that isn't when now it is it is a win now move, you know, it is a move that opens them up to use those Texas capital going forward.
2:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it's interesting because for me, this goes back to the Rams investing and I think this is a great piece.
2:58
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a couple great pieces of this story for a program's perspective right.
3:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I think you can go all the way back.
3:06
[SPEAKER_01]: to, like, even before Sean McFay was there with Kevin Demoff and Lesnead and Tony Pestores and all those guys that have been there, you know, going back to 2012 and it's fascinating to me because they invested in a running back, they invested in an off-ball line back or an Alicola tree and this isn't going to mean a lot to a lot of people, but some of
3:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Change their thinking in the right.
3:37
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna swing big.
3:39
[SPEAKER_01]: We are gonna swing for the freaking fences.
3:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, and that's and and it took them steps to get there Right like they traded for Sammy walkings.
3:47
[SPEAKER_02]: They traded for branding cooks and those deals were okay, but like how do we like where is the really really big swing?
3:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that's what led them to swing on Jalen Ramsey.
3:58
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what led them to swing on Matthew Stafford.
4:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the thing that I think people don't realize about it is they aren't just wildly swinging on players.
4:10
[SPEAKER_01]: They're swinging on generational talents at premium positions.
4:15
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's number one.
4:16
[SPEAKER_01]: And then number two, what facilitates this is hitting on all those second and third and fourth and fifth round picks.
4:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
4:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
4:24
[SPEAKER_01]: So consider this.
4:26
[SPEAKER_01]: In 2021,
4:27
[SPEAKER_01]: They trade two first round picks for Matthew Stafford, right?
4:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Jared Goff is part of that deal as well.
4:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not forgetting him, but just consider that you're giving up a draft pick in 2022 and a draft pick in 2023 because you don't have your 21 pick because that was gone for Jalen Ramsey, right?
4:46
[SPEAKER_01]: So your 19 pick your 20 or your 20 pick your 21 pick went for Ramsey your 22 pick your 23 pick went for for Matthew Stafford the 23 pick by the way winds up I believe being a top 10 pick right.
5:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, because the Rams had that year with all the injuries right yet.
5:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, after not having a first-round pick for all of those years, right?
5:11
[SPEAKER_01]: They have one of the best young rosters in football.
5:14
[SPEAKER_01]: This is facilitated not by saying F.M.
5:16
[SPEAKER_01]: picks.
5:18
[SPEAKER_01]: It's by hitting on second and third and fourth and fifth rounders.
5:21
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what facilitates this.
5:23
[SPEAKER_01]: That's why they've got a good enough team to take a swing like this.
5:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the part that I think everyone misses.
5:28
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a huge organizational triumph.
5:32
[SPEAKER_01]: I dare versus a first round pick, but you know else you have on the defensive line by or in young cobalt or Braden Fist all the way outside the first round, right?
5:41
[SPEAKER_01]: You have on, in your receiver group, Pook in Akura and you're running back room, Kyron Williams all taken outside of the first round.
5:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, you know, you look at all of the, you look at like the, the, the, the aggregation of all of this, and
5:56
[SPEAKER_01]: What enables this is a philosophy that we swing worse swinging huge, right?
6:04
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not going to be for just a really good player.
6:06
[SPEAKER_01]: It has to be for a great player and Trent McDuffie, a captain of the Super Bowl, a captain of a Super Bowl champion, you know, I think a tour of three time all pro, right?
6:18
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think you'd argue maybe the best player in all football in my old scared it.
6:22
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that there's a piece of this as a massive organization of triumph.
6:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, this goes back to the draft for them.
6:29
[SPEAKER_01]: They've been working on it for a long time.
6:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't just pop up out of nowhere.
6:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's enabled by a like a philosophical piece of it, which is like we
6:42
[SPEAKER_01]: We have learned our lessons from like over spending on non-premium positions are swinging on really good, but not great players.
6:50
[SPEAKER_01]: So you learn your lesson there and that you when you swing you swing with with with premium players at premium positions.
6:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And then you enable and move like this by hitting on so many other draft picks to fill out the rest of your roster.
7:06
[SPEAKER_01]: So you have a roster that is ready to compete for a championship which justifies and move like this.
7:12
[SPEAKER_02]: I, one of my favorite parts about this was talking to, and I love when seismic things happen in the league and you talk to coaches around the league and they're just as blown away.
7:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, they think about things almost from a fan perspective in a while for the moment, but obviously they're coaches.
7:32
[SPEAKER_02]: So they have smart takes on it.
7:34
[SPEAKER_02]: And one of the things that I wanna kind of clear the runway for and explain, cause I got a lot of pushback when I wrote this yesterday.
7:41
[SPEAKER_02]: But I want people to understand this, and I'm going to try to explain it as best we can.
7:48
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that Miles Garrett, in the hands of Sean McVay and Chris Shula, is a weapon unlike anything we've really seen.
7:57
[SPEAKER_02]: in the NFL over the last decade.
8:00
[SPEAKER_02]: And the pushback is simple, right?
8:02
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, well, okay, the Brown's only one five games with him all the time.
8:06
[SPEAKER_02]: So why does that make him a weapon?
8:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Here's what one defensive coach said.
8:11
[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought this was brilliant, right?
8:13
[SPEAKER_02]: Miles Garrett will determine what direction
8:19
[SPEAKER_02]: the other team runs the ball about 75% of the time.
8:22
[SPEAKER_02]: You know they're running away from him, right?
8:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Miles Garrett will determine which direction the offensive line is sliding in pass protection.
8:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Where, towards him, about 75 or 80% of the time.
8:35
[SPEAKER_02]: Miles Garrett's going to determine how many wide receivers and other team is able to let go to send out into passing routes.
8:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Why?
8:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Because you need another one to block him at all times,
8:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So when you put that in the hands of the Browns or who always kind of had a mischmoshed coach and coordinator and whatever, whatever, whatever, it's a weapon because it's a good player.
9:00
[SPEAKER_02]: He's one of the best players in NFL history.
9:02
[SPEAKER_02]: But if you put it in the hands of somebody who has already taken little statistical advantages like that and broken the NFL in different ways, you're handing McVeigh in
9:15
[SPEAKER_02]: essentially like the passwords to every computer in the NFL because you're giving them an incredible advantage over the opponent.
9:23
[SPEAKER_02]: You're allowing them to dictate terms now on both sides of the ball because the Rams with their 13 personnel with their wide receivers who complete tight end, essentially,
9:33
[SPEAKER_02]: they already dictate terms on offense.
9:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Now they're dictating terms on defense.
9:38
[SPEAKER_02]: That sucks, like if you play the Rams, you are not allowed to you are on your heels on both sides of the ball.
9:48
[SPEAKER_02]: at all times.
9:49
[SPEAKER_02]: That is a nightmare for an opposing coach.
9:53
[SPEAKER_02]: That is a straight-up nightmare.
9:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Again, the difference between the Rams and the Browns, like guys, do I need to get into this or come in all not our heads and accept that these are two very different organizations with like different track records of success.
10:07
[SPEAKER_02]: The Rams are going to use him and weaponize him in a way that Cleveland never could and I'm very excited to see that.
10:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, and I, and you know, now I think you, you look at where they are and like I think again, it's amazing how.
10:27
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, five years ago, they were going into a Super Bowl season, what would be a Super Bowl season, built around the group of Matthew Stafford and Andrew Wittworth and Aaron Donald, of course, and Cooper Cup and Jalen Ramsey, and all those guys are gone except
10:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Miles Garrett, Trent McDuffie.
10:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty, it's pretty mind-blowing.
11:01
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, like I think, they get credit for continuing to be ahead of the curve.
11:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I even argue like, so it was interesting.
11:10
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's some conversation with people over the last couple of years, and they have really, I would say,
11:17
[SPEAKER_01]: like over-invested, they fill us offically, went to a place where they were over-investing in two areas.
11:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Offensive skill, defensive front, right?
11:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And so that was going and investing in, you know, in Devante Adams, when you already had Pook and Akua there, that's what you're doing with all the tight ends, it's drafting plate, core on,
11:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, when you already have Kyron Williams, it's, they took Josiah Stewart last year.
11:48
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe in the second round for Michigan, right?
11:51
[SPEAKER_01]: When they already had fire in young and Jared verse on the roster, so they were investing investing and investing.
11:57
[SPEAKER_01]: They've gotten really good in those areas, but they slipped to a point last year where it cost them a corner, right?
12:03
[SPEAKER_02]: So what do they do?
12:04
[SPEAKER_00]: Trent McDuffie, jail and Watson come on over from Kansas City, right?
12:08
[SPEAKER_01]: They felt like maybe they slept a little bit in the offensive line.
12:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, we're going to draft Steve Avila in the top 40.
12:14
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to pay Kevin Dodson.
12:16
[SPEAKER_01]: They struck out on Jonah Jackson, but still works out because they get two of those three right.
12:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And oh, by the way, they find Alex Jackson on the, like as an
12:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it's just, it's, it's so many of these things going right for them and you know, I think they deserve a ton of credit for always thinking outside the box.
12:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I think always being ahead of other teams in the way that they think and always pushing the limits of what they could do.
12:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And it was funny like I was writing my winners and losers of the trade yesterday and I thought an immediate winner is the tie Simpson of right now because.
12:57
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he was kind of, he was sort of the battering or the pinata for Rams fans for being like, well, if we don't want to see what it was because we didn't spend an immediate impact pick on someone and instead we got this guy.
13:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, mylescare kind of clears that out.
13:10
[SPEAKER_02]: But I think one of the, like in my mind at the beginning, I was like, one of the losers is probably the Tysonson of tomorrow because he inherits a roster that,
13:21
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we just don't know what Pookin' to Q is going to be.
13:24
[SPEAKER_02]: We don't know how he's going to turn out that story that's up to him.
13:28
[SPEAKER_02]: But let me finish because I know I know what you're going to say.
13:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
13:32
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
13:33
[SPEAKER_02]: And I came around on this.
13:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
13:36
[SPEAKER_02]: First, I'm like, okay, Ty Simpson's going to come, probably starting.
13:40
[SPEAKER_02]: your three of his rookie deal, and he's not going to have, you know, they're not going to have, they're going to clear out some of the picks in between now and then, you know, all that kind of stuff.
13:53
[SPEAKER_02]: But then in my head I'm thinking, oh yeah, Matt Stafford's off the books, you know,
13:59
[SPEAKER_02]: He'll still be on his rookie contract and even if he signs like that Jordan love bridge, it'll be under that amount of money that Matt Stafford's making now And then Sean McVay and Les need are gonna have all this money to spend on good players again.
14:11
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like it starts again And so any moment of doubt like I think you're gonna have to check yourself because the Rams have done this time and time again They've rebuilt time and time again.
14:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Now I will say this and I do want to play devil's advocate.
14:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay
14:26
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I can tell you're ready for this fight.
14:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Them rebuilding again for Ty Simpson would put them
14:39
[SPEAKER_02]: on, not on par, but in the same realm as the New England Patriots of the Balachek era in terms of the number of times that they've had to successfully reinvent themselves and maintain a consistent presence in the playoffs.
14:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
14:56
[SPEAKER_02]: So.
14:58
[SPEAKER_02]: My question to you is, and I guess it doesn't matter right now, right now, because they're going to, I mean, if they don't win the Super Bowl with Miles Garrett, I'm going to be surprised.
15:07
[SPEAKER_02]: And again, there's a lot of things can happen injuries all that kind of stuff.
15:10
[SPEAKER_02]: But do you think that they will ultimately be able to run this all back with Ty Simpson in three years, you know.
15:23
[SPEAKER_02]: Or do you think that the now is it will cost them because I do it's worth having a discussion I I have faith because they've done it they've already done it with two different quarterbacks so why can't they do it with the third how ever.
15:36
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Sean McVay, Dave Regone, Cliff Kingsbury, the guys that are there, Nate Sheelhaas, the guys that are there, they're vision for Ty Simpson is very different than what the vision was for Matthew Stafford, and that they believe that Ty Simpson can be a point guard type of quarterback.
15:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And like a jewelry is type of quarterback.
16:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Now that's a big name to put on him right like and I and I do feel like you hear that name a lot, but like that's the idea is that he can play quarterback that way, which means they're going to have to build a little bit of a different way.
16:15
[SPEAKER_01]: But it can be done.
16:17
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I hate to make this like to over-simplify it, but this comes back to what everything comes back to in the NFL.
16:26
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about drafting well.
16:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And people look at the Rams and say, this isn't about the draft.
16:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, it is.
16:30
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about the draft.
16:32
[SPEAKER_01]: It's about getting so many of the lower-around picks right, which means you've got cost control talent on your roster, which gives you freedom to spend at the top of your roster.
16:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, we can go through their draft history.
16:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, without a first-round pick,
16:45
[SPEAKER_01]: The misnomer, of course, is that you, like the FM picks thing, right?
16:51
[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at volume, they've had more draft picks than anybody over the last 10 years, because of how they play the comp pick formula.
16:58
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll go down the list, Braden Fisk in the second, Blake Horm in the third, Cam Kentions in the third,
17:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you know, Jordan Whittington became a useful player for them in this six.
17:09
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't just the last couple of years.
17:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Steve Avila in a second, firing young in the third Kobe Turner in the third, um, you know, Pugernicoa in the fifth, uh, Quentin Lakes become a good player from he was a six round pick, Kyron Williams was a fifth round pick Kobe Durant.
17:25
[SPEAKER_01]: They got good years out of he's gone now, but he was a fourth, like,
17:31
[SPEAKER_01]: One other team has this sort of track record.
17:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Now it's really hard to maintain that, right?
17:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Like Jordan Fuller was a captain for them and he was a sixth round pick.
17:41
[SPEAKER_01]: He's not there anymore.
17:42
[SPEAKER_01]: Ban Jefferson was valuable.
17:44
[SPEAKER_01]: KMakers was valuable.
17:45
[SPEAKER_01]: All guy Taylor rap.
17:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Like these are all guys that were drafted outside of the first round, you know?
17:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And so like,
17:55
[SPEAKER_01]: I hate to oversimplify, but if it's going to work for Ty Simpson, this is how it's going to have to work.
17:59
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
18:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Is that you're going to have to keep hitting on your draft picks.
18:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe you have to hit on picks outside of the first round to do it.
18:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And what this does, of course, is it, it does hurt your margin for error.
18:12
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because...
18:14
[SPEAKER_01]: I know everybody's focused on the first round pick next year, but this also means, you know, minus what they get with that whatever complex coming the next couple of years and they could wind up getting third round complex if they let guys like Kobe Turner or Byron, you know, go, we'll see what happens there.
18:31
[SPEAKER_01]: But, um,
18:34
[SPEAKER_01]: they basically signed up over the next three years for only having two top 100 picks in each of those years, which means something because like you do want to have some margin for air built-in, but you're going to have to hit on picks to keep this going the way that you've had it rolling, and that's what's going to determine where they're at with Ty Simpson.
18:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Pugin Akua.
18:57
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the biggest question.
18:58
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he'll be fine to be there.
19:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Never want to receive it for the foreseeable future.
19:02
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, between the lines, he's done everything the way they've needed them to do it.
19:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
19:08
[SPEAKER_02]: One million dollars is sitting in a pot.
19:10
[SPEAKER_02]: All you have to do is pick the player who walks away with the most steals in a series.
19:16
[SPEAKER_02]: Your picks don't even need to win.
19:18
[SPEAKER_02]: Just back the right thief because you can make picks and win money right now.
19:23
[SPEAKER_02]: The pot is waiting.
19:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Pick your player every game, include their steals stat, series ends, steals leader crown, pot gets split among everyone who called it.
19:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Simple as that.
19:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Get your picks right, and you could win up to 5,000 times your cash.
19:39
[SPEAKER_02]: And...
19:40
[SPEAKER_02]: with steal the pot even your losing picks can play out.
19:44
[SPEAKER_02]: This week on Underdog it's all about the NBA finals and the New York next I'm looking at my guy Jalen Branson to go higher than 20 points.
19:57
[SPEAKER_02]: against Wendy and the spurs.
19:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a new jersey.
20:00
[SPEAKER_02]: It's all it's next.
20:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody's next all the time.
20:02
[SPEAKER_02]: Download the app today and use promo code MMQB to score $50 in bonus entries when you play your first $5.
20:11
[SPEAKER_02]: That's promo code MMQB underdog.
20:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Make picks win money.
20:17
[SPEAKER_00]: Must be 18 plus 90 plus an Alabama Nebraska 19 plus in Colorado for some games 20 plus an Arizona Massachusetts in Virginia and president of the state where unadded fancy operates from supply can so with your play call 100 my reset or 100 gambler or visit www.ncbgamele.org Arizona 1 at her next step 1-800-639-878-3 or text next step 2-5-5-5-342 New York, 21-1-1-7-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-8-
20:44
[SPEAKER_02]: along with the Browns fans who I think immediately or like hold on.
20:48
[SPEAKER_02]: That's all we got for that, um, because when you look at them like a Parsons deal, for example, you know, you think, okay, two ones and a player like, wow, okay, that's that's what we got that.
20:59
[SPEAKER_02]: And,
21:00
[SPEAKER_02]: But I want to kind of stress that I think that's effectively what Cleveland got and it just looks different if you just piece everything together right because Jared verse is worth like a first and a mid round pick and then you know you combine the the mid round picks together the second and the third
21:21
[SPEAKER_02]: And then whatever you would else you would have received from verse.
21:24
[SPEAKER_02]: That's another pick and then you get the first round pick and so in my, you know, there's a way that you can Shimmy this, which I'm sure Andrew Barry will that it probably slightly outpaste the comp for the Micah Parsons deal despite the fact that Miles Garrett is Four or a half years older and so I do think they did well in terms of the comp there.
21:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so like I, when they were discussing this and obviously they've had a lot of time to discuss it.
21:54
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I'll take you, I'll take everybody inside like they're thinking internally was okay, so we have a player and they view them.
22:04
[SPEAKER_01]: like Bruce Smith, Reggie White, like a guy who's going to be able to produce into his thirties.
22:10
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Reggie White was first team all pro at like 37 and Bruce Smith made seven all pro teams in his thirties.
22:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Like they're just in.
22:19
[SPEAKER_01]: Like the sort of like production deep into a career that we rarely see ever, right, those two guys.
22:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So this deal was gonna have to be different.
22:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And so what does that mean?
22:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that means the normal.
22:35
[SPEAKER_01]: two first structure for a premium non-quarterback was not going to work, right?
22:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So the way they looked at it was we need to make a move that is going to serve us in a very big way both in the short-term and the long-term, right?
22:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And so the short-term piece of that was we need to find
23:02
[SPEAKER_01]: That's, we feel like, is a star already and can become a bigger star for us.
23:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And like, it's easy to, just a Smith Jared verse here.
23:14
[SPEAKER_01]: You should not be doing that.
23:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
23:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, the Rams viewed him as, this is Terrell Sugs.
23:20
[SPEAKER_01]: And they were very, very reluctant to give them up.
23:23
[SPEAKER_01]: They fought till the end, not to give him up.
23:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I think in the end, you make the decision because again, you're getting a, you're bringing Lawrence Taylor in, you know, so you do what you got to do, but they really tried to find a way not to give up Jared verse.
23:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So like that serves the short term in the long term because he's young.
23:45
[SPEAKER_01]: under a cost control they you know like this is a player that they can build around and he fits very nicely into the young court they've built with last year's draft class and now this year's draft class with the three picks in the top 40.
24:00
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the other piece was they wanted premium draft capital in multiple years and I think they accomplished that going a one in twenty seven a two and twenty eight and a three and twenty nine that basically sets them up.
24:17
[SPEAKER_01]: in three straight draft cycles to really build on what they have now.
24:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And here's the reality of a con, right?
24:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think you agree with this.
24:24
[SPEAKER_01]: And we've talked about this a little bit.
24:26
[SPEAKER_01]: How I think there was probably some of it in the deleted episode yesterday, right?
24:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, which had a lot of good insight.
24:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, we're not deleting it.
24:35
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll write here what happened to you in this sort of, especially when everything happened, because it did foretell a lot of things.
24:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but I would say like the I would say like this is about timelines, you know, and as much as the Brown thought that Garrett had left in the tank, his value wasn't going to be the same two years from now.
24:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So if he did fall off for some reason or there was some sort of decline and play, it was going to be harder to get the sort of return that they wound up getting on Monday.
25:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for the the example of that, the best way to describe that is look at what
25:11
[SPEAKER_01]: The Raiders got for a Koleo Mac from the Bears in 2018 and then look at what Koleo Mac Was was traded for from the Bears the Chargers four years later.
25:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It was still a good haul, but it was nothing close to what
25:33
[SPEAKER_01]: what math went for in 18.
25:35
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think if you're the Browns you look at and say, all right, chances are we probably don't have our quarterback of the future on the roster right now.
25:43
[SPEAKER_01]: We need capital to capital to go get that guy.
25:47
[SPEAKER_01]: And we have all of these young players, Carson Swesinger, Mason Graham, Quinshawn, Judd can still in Samson, Harold Fan, and that we drive for the last year.
25:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Now we've got Casey Concepcion, Denzel Boston, Spencer Fano coming in.
26:02
[SPEAKER_01]: do the timelines match up.
26:04
[SPEAKER_01]: And when that group gets really good and when we find our new quarterback, how much is Gary gonna have left?
26:09
[SPEAKER_01]: And if we want to trade them then, what can we trade them for?
26:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Are we better off rolling the dice and keeping Gary around or...
26:16
[SPEAKER_01]: Do we get a star who can fit into, from an age standpoint, that group better and really, like, goose are rebuilt here by adding draft picks?
26:26
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's something different for me.
26:28
[SPEAKER_02]: And you, goose means something different.
26:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I was, I've explained this so many times over the last week and a half, I've used supercharged.
26:37
[SPEAKER_01]: I've used put a jet pack on the rebuild.
26:40
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't want to go.
26:41
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sort of running out of terms.
26:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So goose, there you go.
26:45
[SPEAKER_02]: Goose in my friend's lexicon and like this could be like a regional term, but whenever we took photos together one of my friends would always just like jokingly kind of jam his hand into your butt, you know, and he called that goose and because then you uh you would make a weird face in the photo
27:07
[SPEAKER_02]: And so all the nice photos like at our weddings at, you know, the first time we met each other's children, there's just a picture of us being goose.
27:15
[SPEAKER_02]: So that just has like that word as like a special meaning in my heart.
27:20
[SPEAKER_02]: So again, like I did with the Rams, there's two things I want to push back on on the Browns, just a little bit.
27:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
27:25
[SPEAKER_02]: And the one is that the verse situation is interesting to me because
27:34
[SPEAKER_02]: If you're the Browns, you've made him the centerpiece of the trade, and it would look ludicrous if he didn't make it to a second contract with you.
27:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Verse knows this.
27:43
[SPEAKER_02]: His agent knows this.
27:45
[SPEAKER_02]: After this, he has a ton of leverage.
27:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So after this season,
27:50
[SPEAKER_02]: which he would go into the final season of his rookie contract, which means they have the option for just to be clear, they have the option for you.
27:58
[SPEAKER_02]: And then one of the three, yeah.
28:00
[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, my guess is knowing the mechanisms of this, the agent is probably not going to let it get to the point where he's playing under a fifth year option.
28:10
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
28:11
[SPEAKER_02]: So verse will sign a contract extension that will in effect pay him more than the brands are paying miles Garrett right because that's assuming that miles Garrett doesn't go back to the table, which I think he probably will at some point.
28:26
[SPEAKER_02]: You think he'll go and re-up when he go what you I mean, well, I understand just got 50, you know, so in miles, Garrett's a 40, okay.
28:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so he has if he has a monster year, I mean, I would assume he'll go back.
28:40
[SPEAKER_02]: So the other thing I want to push back on, and I think it's just like, and I think this is what's so great about the Rams, and it's not that the Rams, because you illustrated this perfectly, it's not that the Rams are not utilizing the draft, it's just that they're maximizing the picks that they do have, okay?
28:58
[SPEAKER_02]: But what I think bothers me generally, and we'll get to this a little bit more too with what Harry Roseman said in the return for the AJ Brown deal,
29:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Is this sort of that some teams I think are treating these mass quantities of picks almost like a like a Ponzi scheme or like a or like a weight loss scheme where it's like oh you're going to accumulate all this stuff and it's going to be great and it'll help you but like when.
29:23
[SPEAKER_02]: So like Cleveland, since 1999, I think has had something like 20 top 15 picks, 10 top 5 picks, the Andreberry regime really, I mean, since Miles Garrett, the start of and not necessarily just in, you know, Andreberry wasn't in charge at that point in time, but like, since they got Miles Garrett, it was, let's get picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks, picks,
29:47
[SPEAKER_02]: It really, you know, like, where has gotten them?
29:50
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, and you could say that Andrew Barry nailed last year's draft, which he did.
29:56
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think he wisely passed up on Travis Hunter and got better players as a result of that.
30:03
[SPEAKER_02]: But if you're Cleveland, it's like,
30:05
[SPEAKER_02]: okay like we we kind of have done this whole thing where even throughout the entire era of miles gear we're playing around this idea of more picks and more picks more picks and we miss the window to build around miles Garrett you know I mean like it it it passed
30:21
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, let's call it what it is though.
30:23
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's, it's a Deshaam Watson issue.
30:26
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
30:26
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, if they hit on Watson and Watson is who he was in Houston, then we're probably not having this conversation.
30:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Garrett's not traded.
30:36
[SPEAKER_01]: The Browns, I mean, the Browns can be a suitable contender.
30:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you know, that that 22 team that won 11 games.
30:43
[SPEAKER_01]: did it with just a steaming mess until Joe Flack how clean things up a little bit, a quarter back, you know?
30:50
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know, they, they win their first playoff game in forever, since Bill Balichek was the coach, with Baker Mayfield 2020.
30:58
[SPEAKER_01]: They have some injuries in 2021.
30:59
[SPEAKER_01]: They come back in 2002 and like, if Dishon Watson and, was that the, the season he would, no, he was suspended in 2021, right?
31:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So he was supposed to, yeah, he was supposed to play in 22 and he got hurt and like the whole thing kind of devolved into a mess at quarterback, but like it actually looked like that team that team was ready to win you know what I mean like that team was and so like if you want to talk about the plan and we're in to bury in that franchise where like were like 2022 to me is the perfect example of like
31:40
[SPEAKER_01]: If Deshawn Watts ahead sir, even if they just hold on to Baker Mayfield, like they're a real contender in 2022, you know, and I'm not going to say that they would have toppled the chiefs or anything like that, like, but, you know, the Bengals and the chiefs played in the Fc championship game that year, do I think they could have been like competitive with better quarterback play and those playoffs I do?
32:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
32:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
32:07
[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of it, like, it's
32:11
[SPEAKER_02]: I go back and forth on it, right, because I think that Andrew Barry is getting better in this job.
32:15
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that some GMs don't get the runway to make mistakes and correct.
32:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, let's need God that runway in LA, right?
32:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And so the difference with Andrew Barry that I think flips a lot of fans out is he literally orchestrated like the worst trade in the history of the NFL, right?
32:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
32:35
[SPEAKER_02]: But.
32:36
[SPEAKER_02]: you know, and that's a hard butt to get rid of.
32:39
[SPEAKER_02]: But is it worth allowing to see what he does in terms of altering those mistakes, changing his processes, and does something good come of it instead of throwing out all that institutional knowledge and then just bringing someone else in and mishmashing like you've been doing for 26 years.
32:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have the answer to that.
33:00
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that there's a lot of good GMs and GM candidates and football that haven't gotten a shot.
33:05
[SPEAKER_02]: But at the same time, like Andrew Barry is now traded for to show him lots and and traded Miles Garrett and he'd better hope to.
33:15
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, he's got, well, I don't know what, there's, like, there's no, there's no question now.
33:20
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no pressure on that 2025 class.
33:23
[SPEAKER_01]: There's pressure on the 26 class.
33:26
[SPEAKER_01]: There's pressure on the front office to hit on ticks to be right on conception and Boston and Fano and to use the draft capital.
33:37
[SPEAKER_01]: They've now acquired
33:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I mean, the best thing for them might be to be, might be to not be very good this year, based on the quarterback class coming out and everything else.
33:55
[SPEAKER_01]: So that's another element to all this, you know?
33:57
[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
33:59
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so, I mean, like, then you're taking like a pretty massive PR hit, if, you know,
34:05
[SPEAKER_01]: Miles Garrett is on a float in February, in downtown LA, and you're preparing to have a top five page.
34:13
[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to have, I mean, if you're Jimmy Hazelm, you're going to have to be willing, you're going to have to have a pretty square jaw to withstand some of the criticism that's going to come then in real conviction in your plan to stick with it through that, because that might be
34:34
[SPEAKER_01]: But the way at the end of the tunnel does have a chance to be pretty bright.
34:37
[SPEAKER_02]: And here's the last part of this.
34:39
[SPEAKER_02]: And I mentioned this in my winner's loser's column.
34:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And Albert Scott, his columns up from yesterday, which are just packed.
34:46
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he saw this stuff coming and he was ready for it.
34:49
[SPEAKER_02]: If you read it, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
34:53
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, the big loser in all this is, is archmanning.
34:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll tell you why.
34:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Because
35:02
[SPEAKER_02]: Just wait, I want to stick the landing gear, which three teams got absolutely host yesterday by this, the jets because the Patriots got AJ Brown.
35:16
[SPEAKER_02]: the Cardinals because the Rams got miles Garrett and the Cardinals are already having of certainly difficult schedule.
35:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And for last place, you know, I think we said, did we say during the schedule release show?
35:29
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like the toughest last place schedule we've ever seen.
35:32
[SPEAKER_02]: Probably the like I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that like,
35:37
[SPEAKER_02]: If they win three games, I would be absolutely amazed.
35:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's no offense to anybody there.
35:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you can read my coaching list over the years.
35:49
[SPEAKER_02]: All of those guys are on it.
35:50
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I really like that staff that they put together.
35:55
[SPEAKER_02]: That is a jigsaw house before us.
35:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
35:59
[SPEAKER_02]: and the Browns.
36:00
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's going to be the ticket at the top.
36:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Those are going to be the top three teams picking in next year's NFL draft likely.
36:07
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, things happen.
36:08
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're tickets weird.
36:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think we're presuming, I think presuming Arger's going to be the first pick.
36:14
[SPEAKER_01]: He might be, you know, but I think it's it's a little early for that, but yeah, if he winds up having a monster here and that winds up being the result of all this, this can have to really work hard to get to the Vikings at 11.
36:26
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, his dad's got some experience with that, so, uh, but I thought it was Eli.
36:32
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, no.
36:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, although upon upon further inspection, I don't blame them for being really upset.
36:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we went over this right about eating at the Marriott in New Orleans.
36:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Eli sat down with the chargers and Marty Shottenheimer and the GM at the time, uh,
36:52
[SPEAKER_02]: eating at a historic New Orleans restaurant, which like Marty Shotniper is a hundred percent right on that.
36:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But you could have gone to Illinois, you could have gone to Emeralds, you could have gone.
37:01
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, there's a million places that you could have gone to that are epic.
37:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Incredible.
37:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Epic, epic.
37:06
[SPEAKER_01]: The Commanders now, as I think, is the name of one of all of them, like, that was awesome.
37:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I've got a million.
37:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I could run them all down here.
37:12
[SPEAKER_01]: We don't have time for that.
37:13
[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah.
37:15
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
37:15
[SPEAKER_02]: So the Eagles traded AJ Brown to the Patriots, this is what we all saw coming.
37:23
[SPEAKER_02]: a couple things.
37:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Jalen Hertz now is in a place where he's probably got
37:30
[SPEAKER_02]: eight weeks before a major shit storm if he's not playing well.
37:35
[SPEAKER_02]: Right.
37:35
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
37:36
[SPEAKER_02]: And I heard some Eagles fans say this yesterday.
37:39
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, well, a lot of drops.
37:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Like there was like an AJ Brown drops reel to play.
37:43
[SPEAKER_02]: That guy caught had like a 65% catch rate.
37:48
[SPEAKER_02]: AJ Brown did.
37:49
[SPEAKER_02]: But depending on what stats you use, like,
37:53
[SPEAKER_02]: the Eagles used to always throw those deep balls to a month for like there were a lot of just like okay i'm gonna throw it away and it's an AJ Brown's direction kind of thing and that skews your catch percentage yeah there was at one point i think i saw this that in 2024 so it was 2025 but like
38:10
[SPEAKER_02]: of the catchable balls that were thrown at him.
38:13
[SPEAKER_02]: He didn't have any drops like 10 weeks through the season.
38:18
[SPEAKER_02]: That's huge.
38:20
[SPEAKER_02]: And now he starts over with a rookie in McIleman, new offensive coordinator.
38:25
[SPEAKER_02]: And I get all the defensive Jalen, but AJ Brown, I think, was a bigger,
38:33
[SPEAKER_02]: security blanket, then we may ever know for for, for Jay.
38:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I will say like, I think how he did a good job of stalking the receiver room with answers.
38:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And so like, I think you make the argument that the Devante Smith was their number one receiver at the end of last year.
38:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, we can argue over what the cause was, YHA Brown slept a little bit last year.
38:56
[SPEAKER_01]: think, you know, you get a pretty good split if you talk to NFL people about it.
39:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Some believe he's lost a step and then he's starting to affect him and that he's lumbering now.
39:06
[SPEAKER_01]: There are a good amount of other people who think he was disinterested and that like, you know, everything with the quarterback, with the coaching, everything got to him last year.
39:18
[SPEAKER_01]: What regardless, I do think you saw,
39:22
[SPEAKER_01]: an offense that became more reliant on davante Smith so i think davante Smith is ready to be the number one right bring and on tavian wicks and i would not overlook that like he is wildly talented now he never put it all together.
39:37
[SPEAKER_01]: But that packer's receiver room was so crowded.
39:40
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's similar to the bet that the Patriots are making on Romeo Dobbs.
39:45
[SPEAKER_01]: The one that the Eagles are making on Dintavian Wix is that when he comes out of that crowd, that he'll wind up being a better player for it, because he's gonna get more opportunity.
39:56
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think McCoy Lemon, I mean, I would say I just an incredibly ready receiver for the pros.
40:05
[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
40:06
[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's just you trade up for him in the first round.
40:08
[SPEAKER_01]: So now you got three guys who I think are starting to be starting quality receivers.
40:12
[SPEAKER_01]: You've got Hollywood Brown is a backstop sort of an insurance policy there, Elijah Moore.
40:17
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you put the whole thing
40:22
[SPEAKER_01]: This is a pretty good group that they have, you know, and so I'm interested to see what it looks like because you're now taking the guy.
40:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Now as good as I think Devontase Smith is, I don't think Devontase Smith has drawn coverage the way that AJ Brown knows.
40:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And so now I think the difference is, all right, like the environment's a little bit different than the one that everybody was operating in over the last four years, because the one that was that everybody was operating in over the last few four years is what with defenses when you break the huddle, the first thing they're looking for is where number 11's going.
40:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
40:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
41:00
[SPEAKER_02]: And I mean, it's, it's that it's just the size, you know, and I think that that's what, and eagles may be shifting something, right?
41:09
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like the profile of their ideal receiver has changed or they don't care and they're going to figure out a way to build around it.
41:16
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're like interesting point there, too.
41:18
[SPEAKER_01]: I, I hate to cut you off.
41:21
[SPEAKER_01]: But some I've had a couple really smart football people say to me that and this actually came up with concepts the own before the draft.
41:31
[SPEAKER_01]: say to me that they believe the catch and run receivers more valuable than any other type of receiver no doubt because the way defenses are playing right you have smaller defensive backs out there who aren't as good tackling you have more like two high looks so you know what you have to do against two high looks is you have to get open underneath and you have to be able to exploit all the space that's created by that and so i i think it's
42:01
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I think that's the type of receiver Devante Smith can be.
42:05
[SPEAKER_01]: And so like I think from that standpoint, it's sort of interesting too, and that maybe there's a little bit of shift in that way as well.
42:13
[SPEAKER_02]: So like I remember the Ram's Eagles game last year during the regular season and the Eagles were down and the Ram's had their number and they were just walloping them.
42:22
[SPEAKER_02]: And in the second half, it was oh shit.
42:25
[SPEAKER_02]: AJ Brown is nine times the size of a manual forps.
42:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's just do that, you know what I mean?
42:32
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's some way to be fair, like you and I might be nine times the size of a manual forps.
42:39
[SPEAKER_02]: at this moment embarrassed to admit that I am heavier than a manual force, yes.
42:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Got to get back out there, got to get back out there, got to start logging some miles on the old Peloton, but yes, but it wasn't just a manual force, right?
42:58
[SPEAKER_02]: It was most people, and there were, I think, you know, as much as there were the AJ Brown drop highlights yesterday, there were the ones where
43:08
[SPEAKER_02]: you look at a ball that's mid-flight and you're like, how the Christ is he gonna come down with this ball?
43:14
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and it's like multiple leverage shifts and the hands are back here and now they're in front of the guy, I mean, AJ Browns, he's a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit of a little bit.
43:24
[SPEAKER_02]: When he's locked and he can bail you out in a lot of different ways.
43:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And you know that with variable, he'll be locked in.
43:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm interested to see this from a Josh McDaniel standpoint too,
43:37
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Josh has generally favored separators and the way they've taught their quarterback is
43:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it's that whole break.
43:46
[SPEAKER_01]: You think my favorite receiver is the open one, you know?
43:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And outside of Randy Moss, like, and Randy Moss was a separator too.
43:57
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't know how many guys they've had there, where it's like, oh, yeah, throw to him even if he's covered, you know?
44:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's sort of what AJ Brown is.
44:05
[SPEAKER_01]: So, I actually think,
44:07
[SPEAKER_01]: to really create analogy for what you're going to be looking for as far as AJ Brown's fit in Josh McDaniel's offense.
44:17
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to go to the little history that Josh has outside of New England.
44:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And how he used Devante Adams and Vegas and how he used Brendan Marshall.
44:27
[SPEAKER_00]: in Denver, although all those years ago.
44:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And Devante Adams had 180 targets in 2022.
44:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Hello, Vegas.
44:39
[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think if you're looking at like, okay, how is he going to use AJ Brown?
44:43
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, people brought Moss up.
44:45
[SPEAKER_01]: Moss was more of a Z. Moss wasn't in our next.
44:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Brown is a very pure X receiver, and that's what the Vante Adams was.
44:54
[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing that's interesting about this, too, is where I think a lot of people view brown is like sort of like this pure outside receiver, McDonald's is going to do stuff to get mismatches, move them inside, and teach them all the different positions, which I think makes them, you know, I think adds an interesting element to all of this, too.
45:15
[SPEAKER_02]: It was funny because I was thinking about this yesterday.
45:21
[SPEAKER_02]: The NFL is hilarious because we have the NBA starting tomorrow.
45:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Probably the greatest finals.
45:33
[SPEAKER_02]: that we've had since like the LeBron versus warriors finals in terms of anticipation, right?
45:41
[SPEAKER_02]: And the NFL just decides to come up with another holiday where they can absolutely obliterate the conversation and come up with something that dominates, you know, uh, every sports stock station for the next week.
45:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's like the mix or the finals for crisis and we're talking
46:02
[SPEAKER_02]: the June 1st, you know, the way that we can splice up salary cap money by trading players after the June 1st deadline.
46:12
[SPEAKER_02]: And like, God, they just are unstoppable.
46:17
[SPEAKER_02]: They are unstoppable.
46:18
[SPEAKER_02]: And if you think that there's a day on the calendar that they can get, I think it comes up
46:32
[SPEAKER_02]: that, um, do you think that we will see the June 1st date as more, do you think that this was in a unique set of circumstances for a couple of players?
46:47
[SPEAKER_02]: Or does June 1 now become a little bit of a soft trade deadline?
46:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Or, I guess, trade starting line for teams?
46:59
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's ideal, right, like I think everyone rather have the players in earlier.
47:04
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're trading away that much to get a guy, you want that guy to help you right now.
47:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And like the best thing to get him in position to help you right now is to have them, you know, with the playbook in his hands in March at your offseason program at April at OTAs in May.
47:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And so there is like time lost with AJ Brown not in Foxborough for the last three months and my old scared not in Los Angeles for the last three months.
47:34
[SPEAKER_01]: So like I don't see this ever becoming like an intentional thing.
47:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's almost one of those accidental things now I do I would say that this is the product of.
47:46
[SPEAKER_01]: different salary cap management and this belief and the eagles belief I think maybe more so than anybody else put the browns to that
47:57
[SPEAKER_01]: We can spend what we want and figure it out later, you know, and this is one of those creative ways that you get out of, okay, well, and I think people make the mistake of thinking like the, the eagles are saving salary cap money.
48:09
[SPEAKER_01]: They're not.
48:10
[SPEAKER_01]: They're pushing it off.
48:11
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
48:12
[SPEAKER_01]: $27 million is going to be charged in 2027 instead of 2026 now.
48:18
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, I think this becomes a big date in the calendar,
48:25
[SPEAKER_01]: with more teams building aggressively.
48:28
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're in the spot where they can't move stars until then.
48:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Does that make sense?
48:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
48:33
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to mean like because I think if everybody had their draw, there's like they would rather do this in March.
48:38
[SPEAKER_01]: It gives more clarity that team plan to train the player away.
48:41
[SPEAKER_01]: You can get a pick then in the current year.
48:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Somebody who's going to help you right now.
48:46
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's the other thing.
48:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Remember this, like that's a significant concession by how he and the Eagles.
48:51
[SPEAKER_01]: the making that a 28 pick because if they use that pick on a player, you're talking about having two full seasons where you have neither AJ Brown nor that player on the roster.
49:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
49:02
[SPEAKER_01]: So would you rather have someone on your roster this year that's helping you as a result of that trade yes and to do that you have to have.
49:13
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you have to have the deal done, um, before before the draft.
49:18
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, I think it's sort of one of those accidental things that the NFL falls ass backwards into, but do I think that the Roger and his team or high-fiving that everybody was talking about the NFL and shooting first?
49:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
49:32
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, some of the first time it's happening either, I mean, it's interesting, like Mike Frable himself was in this position five years ago trading for Julio Jones when Atlanta had a salary cap issue like this, you know?
49:43
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, like it's not, it's, it's, it's an accidental thing, but it does fill another dead area in the calendar that I'm sure the NFL is thrilled to fill.
49:54
[SPEAKER_02]: But it fills it with fun stuff instead of like, normally, if you were to tell Roger
50:00
[SPEAKER_02]: NFL is going to be dominating the conversation on June 1st if you go shit who got caught speeding you know Memorial Day Memorial Day went horribly oh no yeah yeah I don't I don't like the sound of that at all but this time it it turned out it turned out great I did say that you know quickly how he roseman came out and said that a pick is a pick first round pick is a first round pick
50:24
[SPEAKER_02]: There are two very distinct schools that thought on this.
50:28
[SPEAKER_02]: And actually, I remember interviewing and talking to the people, Richard Thaler and Kate Massey, who, those are the guys who put together that seminal paper, that economics paper on why you should trade for more draft picks.
50:43
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they presented it to Dan Snyder of the Commanders, and then Dan Snyder took all of his draft picks and traded them for Robert Griffin III, and immediately after that, which was hilarious.
50:54
[SPEAKER_02]: But what are the things that those guys talked to me about, which I thought was really interesting, was they were like, hey, this is the part of it that nobody's talking about.
51:02
[SPEAKER_02]: After that paper came out a bunch of their guys got hired to advise teams during the NFL draft and the one thing that they said was that Oh my god, I can't believe how cheap future picks are because it's still a first round pick It's just two years from now.
51:18
[SPEAKER_02]: So who cares?
51:19
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, you know, it was basically like buying a distressed asset that always Matures into something valuable.
51:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And so that's how he rosemines take on it, right?
51:32
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and then it seemed like that pick was all that that pick seemed like it was so far off, right?
51:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that pick that they traded for from the jets two years ago because he has a job security to do it.
51:45
[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have to worry about somebody else making that pick for for the Eagles.
51:49
[SPEAKER_01]: That pick wound up becoming Mark L. Bell and not only that, like so we'll see what happens with the Miami tackle that they drafted there, right?
51:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But it also freed them up to move their other third ground picks, you know, so they moved one of those third ground picks then for Jalen Phillips.
52:06
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Jalen Phillips, they get the rest of the year out of hand, and then they moved another third round pick, which they got as a cop pick from Milton Williams, to go get Jonathan Grinard to replace Jalen Phillips.
52:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
52:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So it gave them a ton of flexibility in what they were able to do with veteran players, not just, you know, drafting guys.
52:27
[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, yeah, for sure, like I think how he's been at the
52:35
[SPEAKER_01]: wrap this up.
52:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Do we want to just give a quick source be update?
52:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Because I think yeah, if we're talking about filling the calendar, just so everybody knows where we're at with that.
52:45
[SPEAKER_01]: There was a hearing in Lubbock yesterday.
52:49
[SPEAKER_01]: And this judge who I guess is not technically from Lubbock County, he's from Terrent County, which I believe is for it worth.
52:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure exactly how that works, but he heard the case, they, the source beside made the case that this is a mental health issue and the initiation just be throwing them out.
53:11
[SPEAKER_01]: If source be guessed the injunction, he'll, this thing is over from an NFL perspective for now and he goes back and plays a Texas tech.
53:19
[SPEAKER_01]: If the injunction is denied, then it's game on.
53:24
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think he declares for the supplemental draft, the deadline's June 22nd.
53:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And then there's a July 5th, the 12th window for him to work out for teams, then the supplemental draft will be there after.
53:37
[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a fascinating thing.
53:40
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, Connor, I think they're doing a rule relatively quickly on this.
53:45
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's something we can definitely dive into on the pod later
53:49
[SPEAKER_02]: I think the source be thing and again, um, you should privately email our producer Shelby and get the lost tapes, uh, it was a great episode, uh, tons of, uh, an award winner actually Shelby, maybe costing us, uh, what are the podcast awards I can't remember.
54:06
[SPEAKER_01]: The key body, uh, yeah, I would probably, I'd be Shelby Mayan, process a new body by taking down that episode.
54:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, uh, it instead it's just going to go to public tour again, um, but, uh, you know,
54:17
[SPEAKER_02]: I, that's it.
54:18
[SPEAKER_02]: That's our lot in life, you know, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
54:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I would like to, you know, there's a little shout out there for V. It's in my own.
54:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw them.
54:26
[SPEAKER_01]: That was well done.
54:27
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
54:27
[SPEAKER_01]: It's your mobile album.
54:29
[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, I, that was waiting for the right time to put it on.
54:31
[SPEAKER_01]: I thought this show might get a little more attention, bring attention to them real quick.
54:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Can I just say one thing on a personal note, um,
54:40
[SPEAKER_01]: worse than the best for my buddy Chris Gasper.
54:42
[SPEAKER_01]: I worked with him at the Boston Globe.
54:43
[SPEAKER_01]: He's one of my best best friends in the business was diagnosed last summer with prostate cancer.
54:51
[SPEAKER_01]: He, you know, I was, I was a groomsman in his wedding.
54:54
[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, I
54:56
[SPEAKER_01]: I have been completely blown away by the amount of courage and determination he's shown and working over the last 10 months when very, very few people knew what he was dealing with, and you know, upholding the standard that he has, which is a high standard that he's held himself to over the course of his career.
55:14
[SPEAKER_01]: He's one of the best.
55:16
[SPEAKER_01]: He's having a surgery today.
55:18
[SPEAKER_01]: We're thinking of you, Chris.
55:19
[SPEAKER_01]: We're praying for you, Chris, and know you're going to come out
55:23
[SPEAKER_02]: cancer sucks.
55:25
[SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about it.
55:27
[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, in moments like this when it's a friend or when it's someone that you respect or someone who you've read for years and that's certainly the case for me and Chris, I mean, having worked in the same division as him as a beat reporter have always looked up to him.
55:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and in those moments where you're like God cancer, what can we do at sucks?
55:47
[SPEAKER_02]: It sucks.
55:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Donate.
55:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Donate to research, you know, reach out, be someone, get checked, get checked, you know, um, all that stuff.
55:56
[SPEAKER_02]: That's how we fight.
55:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And, uh, Chris, we're, uh, we're thinking of you, buddy.
56:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and yeah, thanks for listening to this week's episode.
56:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, we will be back later on this week.
56:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Like Albert said, we'll close out some of the stuff on Source B.
56:09
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll deal with any of the remnants here.
56:12
[SPEAKER_02]: of the A.J.
56:13
[SPEAKER_02]: Brown trade will bring back some of the episode from the deaths and we'll revive some of the other stuff we've been talking about.
56:20
[SPEAKER_02]: So leave a comment, rate, like, subscribe, do all of it and we'll talk to you soon.
56:42
[UNKNOWN]: You
