- Greg: Hey, what's up, guys? It is Tuesday, June 2nd. I am your host, Greg Miller, and this is the still new and rebranded ⁓ Beliefs, Ballots, and Bulldogs, my ⁓ my daily podcast, ⁓ focusing mostly on on daily devotional type stuff and and some scripture passage. ⁓ and we'll get into some some social and current events and political stuff as well sometimes and and ⁓ try to have a little daily dose of UGA dog related information. you know, I the the scripture today comes again from the book of Proverbs like yesterday. And You know, sometimes when when I get ⁓ consecutive or or repetitive type scriptures with with a consistent theme like we have yesterday and then today, you know, it it's it's I don't believe in coincidences and and I am not one of those people who claims to to hear any sort of audible voice from God, but I absolutely believe he communicates with me on the regular. ⁓ and and I think this is one of the ways he does it. I I think when he when he is trying to send me a message, sometimes I think he has to hit me over the head with it 'cause I'm a little slow and a little stubborn. So W when I get consecutive messages or or a repetitive theme in in a small window of time for my daily passages and and my daily scripture study, I I do think that sometimes that's a way for God to say, Hey, I'm I'm trying to send you a message, pay attention. ⁓ the the scripture today comes from the book of Proverbs, as I said, it's chapter twenty, verse three. Very short, very simple. We'll we'll get through this and and get into the analysis and move on. It is to one's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. I mean the i the idea is simple. It's it's it it's a phrase we've all heard. It's essentially Solomon who again the possibly the wisest man to ever exist, Solomon's telling you to pick your battles. You don't have to attend every fight you're invited to. You know, the the idea here is is really basic. It's just saying that, you know, wisdom knows when conflict is necessary and wisdom knows when conflict is just bait. Solomon here is is not telling us to be weak. He's not telling us to be passive. He's not saying to avoid conflict or avoid con hard conversations. He's just saying there is there is honor in refusing pointless conflict. And that distinction matters. You know, some battles are absolutely worth having. I am I am someone who avoids confrontation. I avoid conflict mostly because I don't believe it usually resolves anything. It it is unnecessary. But the distinction matters between, you know, necessary and and needed conflict. Some battles are worth having, you know, standing up for truth, standing up for your family, your faith, you know, protecting people, simply just standing up for what you believe is right. Those are valid concerns, and those are things you should stand up for, you should be willing to fight for. But a lot of what people are fighting over or fighting for today, it's it's not even conviction. It's just ego, it's just pride. Again, we're in Pride Month and and I can go down a whole rabbit hole of what I feel about Pride Month, but that's not a battle I'm gonna pick right now. It it's you know, the the scripture tells us and and Solomon is telling the fool rushes into every argument because he thinks that every insult or everything needs an answer. And and the wise person understands that, you know, not every not every comment, not everything is is worth the waste of oxygen to get involved. And I mean, when we think about today's modern world, this this fits in perfectly. ⁓ you know, the the political situation. Politics is absolutely full of bait. Social media is built on bait. News cycles are driven by bait. And the headlines around, you know, press restrictions at the Pentagon, immigration facilities, court fights, military police, all these political charges and national celebration, it it just All of this stuff it just shows us how quickly public life can turn into just non-stop conflict. And we're all consumed with it and surrounded by it. That the conflict is everywhere and it and it's hard to avoid. And I'm not in any way saying that that those issues don't matter. I am I am as hardcore and and convicted in my beliefs, whether it's political, whether it's religious or or social or whatever. Those do matter. They absolutely do. But the the question has to be are you know, are you or am I engaging but because it matters a and I want to stand up for it? Or am I just engaging or are we just participating because we were provoked? And more often than not, I I think it's the latter. I think we just get provoked and we just have that that guttural urge to react and respond. And and frankly, I I think this is where, you know, God is trying to reach a lot of us. A lot of us are flat out mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. But it's our own fault. It's because we keep fighting battles that God didn't assign to us. You know, people walk around irritated and frustrated and mad all day just because they're plugged into this constant stream of outrage. They're we're all fighting with strangers online, arguing over every headline, every clip, every post, reacting to everything. And and then we all wonder why do we have no peace? You know, at the end of the day, guys, it it it and it sounds very cliche, but just because somebody hands you a sword. doesn't mean you have to swing it. You know, we talked about it a little bit yesterday. Maturity is not winning every fight. It's it's a lot of times it's just knowing which fights are even worth having. And make no mistake, and I and I get I I am well aware of of the perception of me and I know that a lot of times and for most of my life I I've been a pleaser. I've been the the nice guy role. I've always tried to take the high road. I've always been willing to, you know, take the short stick so that so that I can get something down the road. I have done a lot and I have sacrificed a lot and I have I have allowed some of my convictions to be run over just for the sake of peace. But Solomon here is telling us that that sometimes that that seeking of peace is a is a true sign of wisdom. It's just not necessary to get involved in all of the baited stuff that's trying to just trying to get a visceral reaction out of you guys. Peace is not weakness. Sometimes peace is wisdom. And ⁓ i in in dog related news, ⁓ it looks like yesterday, June first, was absolutely another great day in America. The Gators and the Jackets both lost and were eliminated. We'll see y'all later. ⁓ hey, don't worry, football season's right around the corner and I I know how good y'all are at that. Yeah, I I try to be a good person and I I try not to take joy from bad things happening to sometimes but to other people. But man, sometimes I can't help it. I I I don't know if I live to be a thousand years old, I don't know if I will ever have a day where I don't smile. if the Jackets and the Gators lose. It's just how I'm wired. And if that makes me a bad person, well, so be it. But the dogs are still alive. We'll we'll be hosting Mississippi State, the the Bizarro Dogs in in Athens this weekend. Kind of a strange matchup. We we're four and ⁓ against them on the season. ⁓ all four were pretty competitive or at least competitive at times. So it it should be a great series. And it's one of those examples kind of part of me wishes they would reseed it. I I don't like going against another SEC team at at this point in the tournament. I certainly don't like having to beat a team Again, that we've already beaten four times this year. But it is what it is. Should be a great series in in Athens, Georgia this weekend. Y'all y'all get out there, show up and support the dogs and and let's go dogs and let's ⁓ let's try to advance to Omaha. Daily Countdown says it is 95 days to a football season. And that is that that gets some of us pretty, pretty eager and pretty excited. As for the ⁓ the the historical number 95s, ⁓ you know, ⁓ recent guy, ⁓ big fan of Devontae Wyatt. Never got the recognition he deserved. Devante made some big plays in his last year, year and a half in Athens, Devonta really stepped up. Go back a little further towards the ⁓ the ricked era. Love my guy Jeff Owens from down in Florida. Jeff Owens was a fun, loving, big old jovial defensive tackle. Big guy. Love Jeff Owens. Jeff Owens was a dog through and through. But when we're talking number 95, who's next? There is only one. And it's a guy who made his fame. In a completely different sport than football, and that is none other than the absolute wrestling legend, Bill Goldberg, number 95. If you if you were a fan of wrestling back in the late 90s, early 2000s, when when Goldberg really hit the scene, you know that there was there were two factions. You had your WWE crew and you had your WCW crew. There was no cross-pollination, one didn't watch the other. We were all loyal. I was a WWE guy at that time in college, and I'm gonna tell you, even though Goldberg came up in the WCW, He was must watch from the beginning. He he ran down the streak and it was just it was epic. Now, it didn't always make for great television because most of his matches were less than 90 seconds. ⁓ there are some rumors floating around as to underlying stamina issues, possibly due to some stubb substance related stuff, but we won't get into all that. But Goldberg was absolutely fun to watch. Goldberg was the biggest name in the wrestling scene for a couple of years there. And Yeah, hey, Goldberg is a dog. It just goes to show you you never know where a dog is gonna make his mark. But we will. You know, i it's it's kind of funny. Goldberg, a perfect example. Gold Goldberg didn't back down from fights. ⁓ he he challenged anybody and everybody that that wanted to get in the ring with him. But I I wonder if Goldberg ever exercised any sort of discretion ⁓ in which battles he chose to participate in. Seem seems unlikely. You know, whether whether we're talking about politics or social media or sports or or whatever, you know, controversy is just dominating the news cycle or the headlines today, we gotta get away sometimes from the the question isn't always just about who's right. Sometimes the question is simply, does this even deserve my attention? Is this even a fight that I need to be engaged in? Ultimately that's what Solomon was talking about. We we spend so much time talking about what's wrong with the culture and You know, sometimes we forget to even ask ourselves or look in the mirror, go, hey, maybe we're becoming part of the problem ourselves. If if we're angry all the time, arguing all the time, if we're offended all the time, well, maybe we've picked up a few habits from from the culture that we're actually sitting here condemning and criticizing. I I I mentioned it yesterday and and I'll mention it again because it absolutely bears repeating. The the older I get, the the less impressed I am by people who consistently win arguments. And the more I've b impressed I become with people who simply know how to avoid them and know when not to have them. That's that I just don't see avoiding arguments as weakness. I I I see it as wisdom. So that's it for today, guys. As always, get in your Bible, say your prayers, love one another, and tell the truth. And and if you're listening to this, share, like, subscribe, do all the things. Hit me up on social media. Let me know if there's something you want to talk about. Let me know if there's some scripture you want to go through. I I I'm here for you guys. This is This is me sharing my personal devotional time each day in just the hopes that I can help somebody else, you know, find a connection to God that maybe they didn't have. So get in your Bibles and tell the truth. Love you guys. God bless.
