- 0:06Speaker 1: Hi, this is Monty Hellman. You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:17Speaker 2: It's showtime.
- 0:18Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:21Speaker 3: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:26Speaker 3: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:14Speaker 5: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian, and
- 1:17Speaker 5: this week I'm joined by my special guest co-host, artist
- 1:20Speaker 5: Dirty Donnie. As you know, I always strive to find
- 1:23Speaker 5: different and interesting people to sit down and discuss movies,
- 1:26Speaker 5: and this week is no exception. Plus, we get to
- 1:28Speaker 5: cross over into one of my other favorite segments as
- 1:31Speaker 5: we learn more about a visual artist, how Donnie got
- 1:34Speaker 5: into art, some of the cool people he's worked for,
- 1:37Speaker 5: and once again, how it all stems from and ties
- 1:39Speaker 5: back to movies. Now as we go along here, you
- 1:42Speaker 5: may occasionally hear Boyd chime in, who I briefly met
- 1:46Speaker 5: that day, and who I believe Donnie had just met
- 1:48Speaker 5: the night before, but he came to hang out with
- 1:51Speaker 5: us as we went along, but he was the least
- 1:53Speaker 5: of our problems. Because you'll also hear some other passers-by
- 1:58Speaker 5: as we spend a good portion of our time dodging
- 2:00Speaker 5: drunken patrons as best we could to get this recording
- 2:04Speaker 5: for you. Sometimes it's harder than you might think. But regardless,
- 2:08Speaker 5: Donnie and I had a great time hanging out and
- 2:10Speaker 5: talking about art, music, and movies. But before we get
- 2:13Speaker 5: going on this week's movie, let's get things rolling with
- 2:15Speaker 5: our first segment as we learn a little bit more
- 2:17Speaker 5: about Donnie, his art, and his geeky interests.
- 2:20Speaker 6: It's time for another installment of The art of being
- 2:24Speaker 6: a movie geek.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I was going to, uh, yeah, I was going to
- 2:35Speaker 4: bring notes and take notes. I was taking notes and I, I, uh,
- 2:38Speaker 4: wanted to be a little more prepared, but, um, you know,
- 2:40Speaker 4: I did, I did rewatch the movie, um, on the
- 2:42Speaker 4: plane and I watched the documentary. I bought the DVD
- 2:45Speaker 4: for like the third time. Um, I have it on Laserdisc.
- 2:48Speaker 5: I have actually three or four copies on Laserdisc and, uh, um,
- 2:51Speaker 5: glad i'm not the only one with laser.
- 2:53Speaker 4: Heavy metal yeah you're you're a laser disc guy um i.
- 2:57Speaker 5: Was originally so i still have boxes of them i'm
- 3:00Speaker 5: just yeah i'm just i've been around too long it's
- 3:02Speaker 5: the problem so now i still have i'm too much
- 3:05Speaker 5: of a geek to get rid of my stuff so
- 3:06Speaker 5: i have boxes of laser discs that i'm like every
- 3:09Speaker 5: once in a while i'll see something i was like
- 3:10Speaker 5: oh i need to re-watch that i have that oh
- 3:12Speaker 5: no it's on laser and the last time i moved
- 3:15Speaker 5: i still had my player hooked up but now it's
- 3:16Speaker 5: just like That's too much trouble.
- 3:19Speaker 4: They were expensive in the 90s.
- 3:21Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 4: And they were really cool to have. Like, if you
- 3:23Speaker 4: had a Lasers collection, like, that was, like, really fucking dope.
- 3:26Speaker 4: But I didn't get them back then because they were
- 3:29Speaker 4: so expensive. But when I moved to California, Amoeba had
- 3:32Speaker 4: them for, like, fucking two, three bucks.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 4: So I was like, well, I'm just going to buy
- 3:35Speaker 4: everything I like. I'm not going to buy everything because
- 3:37Speaker 4: that would be too easy, but I'm going to buy, like,
- 3:39Speaker 4: all the movies that I really liked. And I'm still
- 3:41Speaker 4: looking for a few, but, I mean, I kind of,
- 3:43Speaker 4: I don't pursue the, the hobby these days if I
- 3:47Speaker 4: see something and you know it's like I'm still looking
- 3:49Speaker 4: for I'm still looking for barfly and I see it
- 3:52Speaker 4: I don't want to pay 30 bucks for it I
- 3:53Speaker 4: don't want to pay.
- 3:53Speaker 5: 2 bucks for it that's the thing it's I'm not.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Cheap I just this is funner to get the hunt
- 3:57Speaker 4: and find you.
- 3:57Speaker 5: Know Much like the VHS market now, like it's so
- 4:01Speaker 5: hit and miss. It's like there are places that are
- 4:03Speaker 5: just giving them away because they don't care.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Yeah, create a giant collection.
- 4:06Speaker 5: And then there's people that realize, no, there's a market
- 4:08Speaker 5: for this and they're charging $ 40 for a VHS tape.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And I'm like, this is crazy.
- 4:12Speaker 4: VHS and myself, it's the same thing. Sorry, not the
- 4:15Speaker 4: same thing. It's actually like I'm looking for very, very
- 4:17Speaker 4: specific like 80s. airbrush cover shitty fucking the.
- 4:22Speaker 5: Cover art's what makes the yeah the tape quality is
- 4:25Speaker 5: not gonna hold up yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 4: Yeah chances of me watching them i'll probably just watch
- 4:29Speaker 4: it on youtube and that might suck but i kind
- 4:30Speaker 4: of wanted more for the tape and the collector value
- 4:33Speaker 4: just having it and hey you know.
- 4:34Speaker 5: It's the artwork physical yeah yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 4: Having that physical like you know it's like just collecting shit.
- 4:39Speaker 5: It's come back around because again i have boxes on
- 4:41Speaker 5: them somewhere but now i'm just like oh when i
- 4:43Speaker 5: finish getting to my new spot i'm like i might
- 4:45Speaker 5: just put them back on the shelf again like I've
- 4:47Speaker 5: gone full circle and now I was like, oh, what
- 4:49Speaker 5: do I need these for? And I shoved them in
- 4:50Speaker 5: a box and now I'm just like, no, I think
- 4:52Speaker 5: I need these back out on the shelf.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Top quality stuff.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 5: So I usually try to go back and kind of
- 5:00Speaker 5: get a feel for how everybody sort of got to
- 5:03Speaker 5: where they are in whatever part of the arts they
- 5:06Speaker 5: work in. And yours is, I would say, art in general.
- 5:10Speaker 5: But I guess that's where I wanted to start. I
- 5:12Speaker 5: always like going back to childhood.
- 5:13Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 5: As you're a kid growing up, where are you drawn to?
- 5:17Speaker 5: Is it immediately like drawing and visual arts?
- 5:20Speaker 4: Yeah, as a kid, I had a really hard time
- 5:23Speaker 4: in school. And my mom used to give me like, oh,
- 5:26Speaker 4: did you?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I just don't like it.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I know.
- 5:29Speaker 4: That was one part of my problem.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Yeah, totally, totally. And, you know, growing up now and
- 5:34Speaker 4: just realizing that, You know, the school systems, they just
- 5:37Speaker 4: weren't designed to teach people how to learn differently. And
- 5:39Speaker 4: a lot of us are getting that now.
- 5:40Speaker 5: That's the thing.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I think now they also.
- 5:42Speaker 4: They gave you a label and it was like, no, no, no.
- 5:45Speaker 4: Just learn differently.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Well, and I think now they're realizing kids are different. Like, again,
- 5:49Speaker 5: of the kids that I'm around now, there's a couple
- 5:52Speaker 5: of them that are different. and learn things differently and
- 5:56Speaker 5: are super smart but just don't learn things the same
- 6:00Speaker 5: way and like back in the day we were just
- 6:02Speaker 5: like tough kid you know go to school shut up.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Yeah yeah yeah if you don't finish your math you
- 6:07Speaker 4: have to bring it home and do homework and it's
- 6:08Speaker 4: a little different yeah yeah yeah yeah they're realizing a lot.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Back then they were just like shut up kid so
- 6:13Speaker 5: yeah yeah yeah so.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Even then you were drawn as a kid yeah my
- 6:18Speaker 4: mom would always have like a pen and a paper
- 6:20Speaker 4: in her purse and Uh, and then I'd go to
- 6:22Speaker 4: like a dinner with my parents and they would draw
- 6:24Speaker 4: on the placement, you know, the crayons and, um, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:29Speaker 4: It's always drawing, you know? And, um, so that was
- 6:31Speaker 4: a big part, you know, just, just always into, um,
- 6:34Speaker 4: as a kid, I was into like, you know, pop
- 6:36Speaker 4: culture and movies and, uh, you know, of course like
- 6:40Speaker 4: 80s video games, comic books, uh, everything, everything, you know, like,
- 6:43Speaker 4: I mean, everything that I do now is sort of like,
- 6:45Speaker 4: at some point it's, it stems from my childhood or
- 6:47Speaker 4: like the big kid down the street had that cool
- 6:49Speaker 4: smoking the band and model kit. So, You know, I'm
- 6:51Speaker 4: going to draw, make a robot version of that or something,
- 6:52Speaker 4: you know. Yeah, so, you know, I always drew. I
- 6:54Speaker 4: was always, you know, creative and drew. And I was
- 6:56Speaker 4: always really into pop culture and, like, all kinds of,
- 6:58Speaker 4: you know, collecting. And, you know, I got into, like,
- 7:02Speaker 4: Iron Maiden in, like, the third, fourth grade. A buddy's
- 7:05Speaker 4: big brother got us into it.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Was it for the music first or the artwork first?
- 7:10Speaker 4: For me, it was completely 100% for the artwork first.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I loved Eddie so much.
- 7:14Speaker 5: And, like, for the longest time, I don't think I'd
- 7:16Speaker 5: even heard the– like, my friend had a poster on
- 7:19Speaker 5: the wall.
- 7:19Speaker 1: I don't think he had any tapes of them. Like,
- 7:21Speaker 1: it just became such.
- 7:22Speaker 4: A fandom of the artwork. Music was secondary to that.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 5: So, that's cool if you're that old school.
- 7:27Speaker 1: I actually like the music.
- 7:29Speaker 7: No, no.
- 7:29Speaker 4: And then I got into music after.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I was like, yeah, I love it.
- 7:32Speaker 4: You know, but– Yeah, I got into that, and then
- 7:36Speaker 4: later on, you know, punk rock, skateboarding and punk rock,
- 7:38Speaker 4: and started doing record covers, started doing art for bands,
- 7:44Speaker 4: and then eventually led to me going full-time as an
- 7:46Speaker 4: artist in 1997, 98. It's been 20 years, full-time, doing
- 7:52Speaker 4: a lot of, like, underground record covers and posters.
- 7:56Speaker 5: I mean, I guess, just to put it in perspective
- 7:58Speaker 5: for people, just as far as where you've ended up, like,
- 8:01Speaker 5: the level you... Granted, I guess the go-to.
- 8:04Speaker 1: A few people have heard of that Metallica man.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Who all have you worked for, I guess, just to
- 8:08Speaker 5: give people an idea of where you have ended up now?
- 8:12Speaker 4: Recently, the last five... Kind of like my most proud
- 8:15Speaker 4: moments of my career, like the stuff I'm most stoked
- 8:18Speaker 4: on is the last five years, which is my new book,
- 8:21Speaker 4: Pinball Wizards, Blacklight Destroyers. And that's all my newest, latest,
- 8:24Speaker 4: my favorite stuff. And it's like a little bit of
- 8:26Speaker 4: a mix of everything. I basically got... My kind of,
- 8:31Speaker 4: I guess, big break, I was... I was doing a
- 8:33Speaker 4: lot of like really cool, like underground, like band record
- 8:37Speaker 4: covers and doing posters and stuff. But the thing that I, uh,
- 8:41Speaker 4: that when it really hit was when I got hired
- 8:43Speaker 4: by Metallica and that was like 2002 and I was
- 8:46Speaker 4: living in Montreal, Canada at the time. And they, um,
- 8:50Speaker 4: my friend Chip, uh, was a roadie for them and
- 8:52Speaker 4: he showed Kirk and James my art. And, uh, Kirk
- 8:55Speaker 4: was like, Hey, they just bought that building and they're like, Hey,
- 8:57Speaker 4: we want.
- 8:58Speaker 5: The geeky one. He would, he would immediately be attached.
- 9:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Cause I started working for Kirk and then I ended
- 9:03Speaker 4: up working like later on more for James, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 4: cause like the cars, the car connection and you know,
- 9:08Speaker 4: guitars and cars. And, and, uh, I mean, James was
- 9:11Speaker 4: into like monsters stuff too. Just curse. Just like a fanatic,
- 9:13Speaker 4: you know, like there's monsters. Yeah, totally. Totally. Um, so, uh,
- 9:18Speaker 4: that was very cool. I was like in Montreal and like, uh,
- 9:20Speaker 4: I went to their studio, I was visiting San Francisco
- 9:22Speaker 4: and I went to their studio. they asked me to
- 9:24Speaker 4: come out and show them my artwork. Kirk hired me
- 9:30Speaker 4: on the spot, and I was like, I've got to
- 9:32Speaker 4: go back to Montreal and draw this stuff. I was
- 9:36Speaker 4: going to go back to California to be there for
- 9:38Speaker 4: a long time, so I had to go back and
- 9:40Speaker 4: tie up some of my bills and make sure my
- 9:41Speaker 4: house was properly sealed for the winter. I spent six
- 9:46Speaker 4: months out there painting in San Rafael outside of San Francisco.
- 9:50Speaker 4: Then they went on tour, but that was the big...
- 9:53Speaker 4: I moved to California and that band gave me a
- 9:57Speaker 4: lot of clout for like a few years. jobs. And
- 10:01Speaker 4: I would have done, I would have still been doing
- 10:03Speaker 4: what I was doing without them, but, and I still
- 10:05Speaker 4: would have, you know, like, I honestly feel like I
- 10:08Speaker 4: still would have, you know, been right here doing this
- 10:11Speaker 4: stuff yeah it would have been you know it would
- 10:13Speaker 4: have gone that direction just take a little longer it
- 10:14Speaker 4: might have been that band it might have been another
- 10:15Speaker 4: band or another company or something you know like because
- 10:17Speaker 4: I did do art for other companies that didn't care
- 10:19Speaker 4: about Metallica like step on they don't give a fuck
- 10:21Speaker 4: about Metallica you know and they didn't hire me because
- 10:24Speaker 4: of they hired me because they like my art and
- 10:26Speaker 4: they were just like we don't care about Metallica you
- 10:28Speaker 4: know so anyways but that was definitely a break that
- 10:30Speaker 4: was a.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Cool thing that happened I mean did they at that
- 10:33Speaker 5: point when you were just there like doing artwork were
- 10:36Speaker 5: they giving you specific ideas or did you well Kirk.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Wanted like a giant surf mural of them as monsters
- 10:41Speaker 4: and so uh and then he wanted like some um
- 10:44Speaker 4: at the time some tiki stuff and and he had
- 10:46Speaker 4: a bunch of ideas but then that when I was
- 10:48Speaker 4: painting in the studio they were they were looking for
- 10:50Speaker 4: a bass player and then they found Robert Trujillo but
- 10:52Speaker 4: they're trying all kinds of people out like like Pepper
- 10:54Speaker 4: Keaton from COC and all these dudes were coming through
- 10:56Speaker 4: the studio and like Sean Penn was hanging out of
- 10:58Speaker 4: the studio and he would like walk by and like
- 11:00Speaker 4: I just like you know remember him outside having a
- 11:02Speaker 4: smoke and I was like, Hey, you know, get a
- 11:04Speaker 4: smoke from you. And like, you know, there's Sean Penn
- 11:06Speaker 4: hanging out in the studio. That's, that's pretty cool.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You know?
- 11:09Speaker 4: And then, um, it was just really, there's a lot
- 11:10Speaker 4: of people coming and going and their album was coming
- 11:12Speaker 4: out and new bass player. And it was a really
- 11:14Speaker 4: cool time to, uh, to be there. Um, but I
- 11:16Speaker 4: ended up painting like, uh, um, James was like, Hey,
- 11:18Speaker 4: brought a guitar into the room.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Could you paint this?
- 11:20Speaker 4: Like it's new ESP guitar. It's white, you know, like
- 11:22Speaker 4: the ones that I play and like, could you do
- 11:24Speaker 4: this logo for me? So, and then can you paint
- 11:27Speaker 4: my office door and like, uh, and the piano and
- 11:29Speaker 4: It just turned into all these jobs. And I was like,
- 11:31Speaker 4: that's why I stayed for six months. It didn't take
- 11:33Speaker 4: me that long to do the mural. It just kept
- 11:35Speaker 4: wanting art. So that was pretty cool.
- 11:39Speaker 5: And then I guess at what point did the... Because
- 11:41Speaker 5: you've done a lot of pinball art too. So was
- 11:44Speaker 5: that after that, around that time?
- 11:47Speaker 4: The pinball art started... I did this band, The Helicopters.
- 11:52Speaker 4: I did their record cover. They're from Sweden. They're a
- 11:54Speaker 4: love of the band. They're buddies of mine. So me
- 11:57Speaker 4: and Wade Krause... Wanted to do a custom game, so
- 11:59Speaker 4: we took a kingpin and we tore it down. We
- 12:01Speaker 4: made this Helicopters game out of a record cover that
- 12:03Speaker 4: I'd done. And basically, yeah, did the Helicopters pinball machine
- 12:08Speaker 4: with Wade Krause. Showed that to James Hetfield, and he's like,
- 12:12Speaker 4: I want a Metallica game. That's when we met Tonio Kleiss,
- 12:14Speaker 4: who now works for Stern. And Tonio jumped on to
- 12:18Speaker 4: do the programming. So we put Metallica music into a
- 12:22Speaker 4: custom game.
- 12:22Speaker 2: It was Earthshaker.
- 12:24Speaker 4: And we reprogrammed it and had it play Metallica. And
- 12:27Speaker 4: he programmed a game very similar to how you see
- 12:30Speaker 4: games programmed now. And that's how he got the job
- 12:32Speaker 4: because he's a mad genius. So we got that going on.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Feel free to sit down. So yeah, so Hetfield bought
- 12:44Speaker 4: the Metallica pinball from us. Hired us to make it.
- 12:47Speaker 4: And then after that, he's like, I want a Beatniks
- 12:49Speaker 4: one for my car club, the Beatniks. So we did
- 12:51Speaker 4: a second one. And then When it came about that
- 12:56Speaker 4: CERN was going to do the Metallica pinball, Metallica were like,
- 12:59Speaker 4: we want Donnie to do the game. And CERN were like, well,
- 13:01Speaker 4: we want Donnie to do the game too. Like we
- 13:02Speaker 4: want someone to hand draw it. So I got that
- 13:05Speaker 4: gig and that turned into like a magical, magical gig.
- 13:09Speaker 5: So how, I guess you started hand drawing everything. Is
- 13:12Speaker 5: that still primarily how you do everything?
- 13:15Speaker 4: Most of the stuff, I can, I do a lot
- 13:17Speaker 4: of airbrushing. I do a lot of, a little bit
- 13:18Speaker 4: of everything. But my main, my main thing is, is
- 13:21Speaker 4: doing ink.
- 13:23Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Hand drawing stuff.
- 13:26Speaker 5: And then you usually I'll just kind of see what
- 13:29Speaker 5: people are interested in movie wise. So I guess growing
- 13:31Speaker 5: up in the middle of all that pop culture somewhere
- 13:33Speaker 5: was probably I'm assuming tons of movies. So were there
- 13:37Speaker 5: some like favorites growing up or what all were you
- 13:40Speaker 5: into movie wise?
- 13:41Speaker 2: As a kid?
- 13:42Speaker 1: And into now.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 13:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah. Fuck man.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Like as a kid I you know I remember really
- 13:49Speaker 4: like being really little and liking Cannonball Run.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Oh yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 4: And like, we rented it.
- 13:53Speaker 5: VHS and, uh, I was like, man, this is like
- 13:56Speaker 5: so cool.
- 13:56Speaker 4: And then like the girl, you know, like they get
- 13:58Speaker 4: pulled over in the Lamborghini and I was like, he,
- 14:00Speaker 4: you know, like, yeah. And, uh, Bert Reynolds and, um, yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 4: the whole deal, like car, I was like cars as
- 14:05Speaker 4: a kid, you know, and like car movies and, um, man,
- 14:10Speaker 4: I'm totally having a brain fart. But yeah, just like, yeah, like,
- 14:12Speaker 4: like a film buff, you know, just like pretty much like,
- 14:15Speaker 4: you know, like a.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Lot of stuff.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You're buying a laser disc, you have to be.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 1: A movie geek of some sort.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, totally.
- 14:20Speaker 4: And when he asked me to do this, I was like, yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 4: I came up with a bunch of movies and, you know,
- 14:23Speaker 4: we talked about Blade Runner possibly. That's too, that's heavy.
- 14:26Speaker 5: That's an undertaking. Plus there's like three to four versions.
- 14:30Speaker 5: So then we either have to pick one.

- 18:30Speaker 5: keep things rolling.
- 18:31Speaker 4: What'll get me a pony?
- 18:33Speaker 5: That's a really high level.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I'll have to figure out exactly what.
- 18:38Speaker 6: That's platinum membership right there.
- 18:40Speaker 5: That might be above platinum. We'll have to see.
- 18:43Speaker 7: What is above platinum?
- 18:45Speaker 6: Titanium.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Titanium.
- 18:47Speaker 7: Really?
- 18:49Speaker 5: Maybe that's a step below. I don't know.
- 18:50Speaker 6: We'll have to see.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Aluminium level. That's way below.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Not if you say it fancy.
- 18:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 6: Unobtainium.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Good luck with that.

- 19:59Speaker 3: Columbia Pictures presents....
- 20:02Speaker 14: Heavy Metal.
- 20:04Speaker 3: A trip beyond the future to a universe you've never
- 20:08Speaker 3: seen before. A universe of mystery. A universe of passionate fantasies.
- 20:17Speaker 3: A universe of terrifying evil.
- 20:20Speaker 14: A universe of magic. Heavy Metal. heavy metal a step
- 20:55Speaker 14: beyond science.
- 20:56Speaker 4: Fiction as a kid um it kind of goes one
- 21:10Speaker 4: of the things goes back when i was uh in
- 21:12Speaker 4: the third third grade i came back from camping with
- 21:16Speaker 4: my parents and in canada they had first choice super
- 21:19Speaker 4: channel which was like z channel or hbo here yeah
- 21:21Speaker 4: and uh And it was like around three o'clock and
- 21:23Speaker 4: they were like, yeah, just watch TV, you know, plop
- 21:25Speaker 4: in front of the TV and they were doing their thing.
- 21:27Speaker 4: And like, I turned it on and it was like,
- 21:28Speaker 4: this is cartoon on. And, um, I think I, I,
- 21:31Speaker 4: I got right around the beginning and I was just like, Whoa,
- 21:35Speaker 4: this is crazy. And then the den scene comes on
- 21:38Speaker 4: and it's like cartoon boobs. And I was like, dude,
- 21:41Speaker 4: I'm like, Oh my God, that blew my fucking mind.
- 21:44Speaker 4: And I was like, I went to school the next
- 21:46Speaker 4: day and this kid, Jamie Bastion sat across from me
- 21:48Speaker 4: and he was like, he's like, Hey, did you see
- 21:50Speaker 4: heavy metal last night? I'm like, yeah. He's like cartoon boobs.
- 21:55Speaker 4: But anyways.
- 21:56Speaker 5: Little did they know what they sat you in front
- 21:58Speaker 5: of and how much it would affect your brain.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I think we all played that game.
- 22:02Speaker 4: That movie didn't– it wasn't available on DVD until recently.
- 22:07Speaker 4: I'm sure we're going to cover that. But my friend
- 22:09Speaker 4: had a copy of it from Super Channel and VHS.
- 22:12Speaker 4: So when I was a teenager, like I was like
- 22:14Speaker 4: maybe 16– And he was like, yeah, I have Heavy Metal.
- 22:17Speaker 4: I'm like, how the fuck did you get that? He's like, well,
- 22:19Speaker 4: I have it on V8. I taped it years ago.
- 22:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:21Speaker 4: It was actually my friend's brother-in-law, and he gave it
- 22:23Speaker 4: to me. So I actually was watching it, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 4: through my teens. Like, I had a copy of it,
- 22:27Speaker 4: and it disappeared. But, you know, I definitely got to
- 22:30Speaker 4: get my second fill of it, and then, you know,
- 22:33Speaker 4: the third fill would come in when they re-released it.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Every time. And it was because of the soundtrack, I think.
- 22:37Speaker 4: They had problems with the soundtrack.
- 22:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Which, at that point, was all of the movies.
- 22:41Speaker 2: A lot of hand shakes and stuff.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Any of those, yeah.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Like, anything that came out.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Even in the theater on some of them, by the
- 22:47Speaker 5: time you hit video, like nobody was planning ahead. Nobody
- 22:50Speaker 5: thought about home video, like sales, let alone into the
- 22:53Speaker 5: future past that. So it's like, No business deals were done.
- 22:56Speaker 2: A lot of licensing problems.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Even into the 90s, like, all those MTV shows, that
- 23:00Speaker 5: was well into where they should have known better, and
- 23:02Speaker 5: they didn't license any of the music.
- 23:04Speaker 1: So, like, Beavis and Butthead.
- 23:05Speaker 5: And Daria, like, they couldn't play any of those for
- 23:07Speaker 5: years because.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Oh, is that why Beavis and Butthead kind of sort
- 23:10Speaker 4: of disappeared for a while?
- 23:11Speaker 5: Well, and then, like, when they came out, even that
- 23:13Speaker 5: first run that they came out with, they had generic music, which,
- 23:16Speaker 5: I mean, the reason everybody liked them so much was
- 23:18Speaker 5: them making fun of the videos. But then they never
- 23:21Speaker 5: licensed the– because they were just– people just gave MTV
- 23:24Speaker 5: music videos. They were like, for the love of God,
- 23:25Speaker 5: play our music videos. So they were loving it at
- 23:27Speaker 5: that point. But now when it's our licensing game, people
- 23:30Speaker 5: are just like, okay, where's our cut for every time
- 23:32Speaker 5: you sell a piece of somebody a video?
- 23:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it's all changed.
- 23:35Speaker 4: It's huge, yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 5: It became like all of those things they either had
- 23:38Speaker 5: to put out with generic fill-in music or they had
- 23:41Speaker 5: to go back and pay a fortune to get it
- 23:43Speaker 5: all licensed. So now everybody knows better. But yeah, anytime– 80s, 90s.
- 23:48Speaker 4: Tulane Blacktop had a hard time with, I think it
- 23:50Speaker 4: was like a Doors soundtrack, a Doors song, and he
- 23:53Speaker 4: had a hard time getting that.
- 23:54Speaker 2: All of that stuff.
- 23:55Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. Just nobody thought ahead because there was no
- 23:57Speaker 5: reason to at the time.
- 23:58Speaker 4: That was another movie I wanted to talk to you
- 23:59Speaker 4: about too, was Tulane Blacktop. I was like, man, that
- 24:01Speaker 4: would be a good one to cover, but it's James Taylor.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, we had the director on.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, Monty and Helman. Oh, no way.
- 24:10Speaker 5: I was trying to make sure that was it because
- 24:12Speaker 5: all those car movies become a big blur. It's like
- 24:14Speaker 5: I'm trying to remember that that is the right one
- 24:15Speaker 5: that Monty directed, right?
- 24:17Speaker 4: Dennis Wilson from the Beach Boys and James Taylor.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Both of them in really their only real acting ever
- 24:23Speaker 5: for the most part.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:26Speaker 5: It's an interesting movie.
- 24:28Speaker 4: State your name for the record.
- 24:33Speaker 5: That's still admissible in court. Alright, so this week's Silver
- 24:40Speaker 5: Theater feature is Heavy Metal. The year is 1981. The directors,
- 24:45Speaker 5: there's like nine of them, so I won't even rattle
- 24:47Speaker 5: them all off. But there are many, many directors. And
- 24:50Speaker 5: they plot according to IMDb, and it's very generic here.
- 24:54Speaker 5: A glowing orb terrorizes a young girl with a collection
- 24:56Speaker 5: of stories of dark fantasy, eroticism, and horror.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, it's fine when.
- 25:01Speaker 5: The orb does it, but when I talk to young
- 25:04Speaker 5: girls about eroticism, I get in trouble. It's fine if
- 25:07Speaker 5: you're a green orb. Spoiler alert with that. I'm hoping
- 25:11Speaker 5: by now you've seen Heavy Metal, but we're going to
- 25:14Speaker 5: ruin it, so feel free. Continuing your not-really-available-on-VHS idea, for
- 25:22Speaker 5: years here in this town, we had a little... Again,
- 25:26Speaker 5: back when they had movie theaters, and it was a
- 25:29Speaker 5: theater with one screen, and they would map out their stuff,
- 25:33Speaker 5: and they were kind of like the cool theater they
- 25:35Speaker 5: would play. They had their midnight shows, and it was
- 25:37Speaker 5: just mapped out every month on the calendar. And it
- 25:41Speaker 5: was at least once, maybe twice per weekend, per month,
- 25:45Speaker 5: like midnight showings of heavy metal. And like, that's to me,
- 25:48Speaker 5: like that's before I even knew.
- 25:49Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 1: It was a Vogue back in the day.
- 25:53Speaker 5: And it's like, when I, before I'd even seen it,
- 25:55Speaker 5: I knew it was cool enough to be a midnight
- 25:57Speaker 5: movie at the Vogue. So I was just like, obviously
- 25:59Speaker 5: this is like a cut above most cult movies. It's
- 26:02Speaker 5: because it ran that long. And I think all the
- 26:04Speaker 5: way up until like, I think till they killed the Vogue.
- 26:07Speaker 5: It's like, it was still there. It was still one
- 26:09Speaker 5: of the regular rotation midnight movies.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Wow.
- 26:12Speaker 2: How long did it run for?
- 26:13Speaker 5: It ran for, I mean, they, again, they were independent,
- 26:15Speaker 5: so they just kind of played what they wanted to play.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 26:18Speaker 5: Say up until again, early nineties, they were still running.
- 26:21Speaker 4: I'd love to see the theater. I never got to.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Right around there.
- 26:26Speaker 5: And it was still, yeah, it was still a favorite
- 26:29Speaker 5: for that. So, To me, that's kind of what I
- 26:30Speaker 5: always thought of. It already had a cult following by
- 26:34Speaker 5: the time it came into my consciousness. So I'm trying
- 26:37Speaker 5: to think how it went over that first time. I
- 26:40Speaker 5: feel like, critically, I read it. It didn't do well originally.
- 26:43Speaker 5: It's another one of those things that only found its
- 26:46Speaker 5: following in years to come.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it doubled. I think it was like
- 26:51Speaker 4: $ 10 million and it made $ 20 million or something. I
- 26:53Speaker 4: don't know.
- 26:54Speaker 1: It's pretty crazy.
- 26:56Speaker 4: It's good it broke even and made some money.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Better than a lot of attempts at being a cool
- 27:01Speaker 1: cult movie.
- 27:01Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:03Speaker 5: I think it's also really interesting where it comes from. Like,
- 27:07Speaker 5: the fact that it's, you know, Ivan Reitman, who you
- 27:09Speaker 5: don't really, you wouldn't immediately go to for, like, weird
- 27:13Speaker 5: fantasy movie, and, like, sort of sci-fi and sword and sorcery, and, like,
- 27:17Speaker 5: it's a weird thing, but the fact that it's also got,
- 27:21Speaker 5: you know, one of the biggest comedy directors in the future,
- 27:24Speaker 5: at the time, he was just kind of getting started, but...
- 27:27Speaker 5: It's that weird mixture of National Lampoon meets SCTV meets
- 27:32Speaker 5: Dungeons and Dragons.
- 27:34Speaker 4: It has the element of SCTV and it totally goes there.
- 27:38Speaker 5: It's all of those geeky things of the early 80s.
- 27:41Speaker 4: The documentary, if you're listening to this, if you haven't
- 27:45Speaker 4: seen the documentary that's available with the DVD and the Blu-ray,
- 27:47Speaker 4: you've got to go and watch that whole fucking documentary
- 27:49Speaker 4: because it's really good.
- 27:50Speaker 2: It's great.
- 27:50Speaker 4: A lot of extras and stuff.
- 27:52Speaker 5: It's only slightly noticeable from this end, but I guess
- 27:55Speaker 5: from your end, it's coming from Canada. So was there,
- 27:59Speaker 5: did it seem like it was, you know, something coming
- 28:02Speaker 5: out of your area or did it, cause when I
- 28:05Speaker 5: look at it now, I'm just like, it's, it's definitely
- 28:08Speaker 5: like the entire group of, you know, voice actors is
- 28:10Speaker 5: Canadian and like the people they're bringing in.
- 28:13Speaker 4: So it was, it was, it was a legend that
- 28:15Speaker 4: it had been done in Ottawa. So we always thought
- 28:17Speaker 4: it was done in Ottawa and, um, it actually, I
- 28:19Speaker 4: think it was done in Toronto, but we, we could
- 28:21Speaker 4: find that out, you know, do a research and stuff,
- 28:23Speaker 4: but it, um, part of it was done in Canada,
- 28:25Speaker 4: the animation. Part of it was done in France, part
- 28:27Speaker 4: was in the U.S. It was done, like, all over
- 28:29Speaker 4: the place. It was definitely a Canadian aspect, because you
- 28:31Speaker 4: were like, you knew that was fucking John Candy right there,
- 28:33Speaker 4: you know? It was like, oh, that's John Candy, you know? Like,
- 28:35Speaker 4: I knew that as a kid, you know? Like, Canadian hero,
- 28:38Speaker 4: you know?
- 28:38Speaker 5: Yeah, because everybody's still sort of drawn to it, and, like,
- 28:41Speaker 5: you find... Because everybody always kind of remembers different parts
- 28:45Speaker 5: of it, because it's so, like, fragmented.
- 28:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, there's so many, like, there's so much going on,
- 28:48Speaker 4: there's so many stories.
- 28:49Speaker 5: And And almost everybody goes to the John Candy. I
- 28:52Speaker 5: think because he became such an icon of the 80s,
- 28:55Speaker 5: and this was sort of.
- 28:57Speaker 4: He played the alien.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Yeah, he's the robot in the lawn.
- 29:01Speaker 4: I think him and Harold Ramis, I think they were
- 29:02Speaker 4: both throughout the whole thing. Maybe not in every one,
- 29:05Speaker 4: but they.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Were in that.
- 29:05Speaker 5: Again, I think they're just filling in. We need another voice.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they were.
- 29:07Speaker 5: They were doing taps.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Yeah, all those guys were doing taps. Or stripes. Stripes, stripes, stripes.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Not taps.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Yeah, stripes.
- 29:12Speaker 4: They were doing stripes.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. And the director, same director. Harold Ramis yeah
- 29:17Speaker 5: I think was on there too somehow.
- 29:19Speaker 4: There's a connection and it's in the DVD it's on
- 29:21Speaker 4: the documentary and they explain the connection and there's a.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Connection luring him back to the new voice he was like.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Hey I'm doing this we're doing this movie but I
- 29:27Speaker 4: got this other movie called Heavy Metal and we need
- 29:30Speaker 4: some voiceovers so he got the fucking you know the
- 29:32Speaker 4: SCTV that fucking canadian comedy.
- 29:34Speaker 5: Crowd come lauren john candy over with him yeah yeah so.
- 29:39Speaker 10: It's pretty cool it all started when i found the
- 29:42Speaker 10: green meteorite i read in faraday's life of the planets
- 29:45Speaker 10: that smaller ones like this are supposed to burn up
- 29:47Speaker 10: when they enter the atmosphere but for some reason this
- 29:50Speaker 10: one didn't so i brought it up to my room
- 29:52Speaker 10: stuck it in my rock collection and forgot about it
- 29:55Speaker 10: I was experimenting with natural electricity, and with the storm
- 29:57Speaker 10: warming up, I figured maybe tonight I'd hit the jackpot.
- 30:01Speaker 4: All I needed was a little juice.
- 30:02Speaker 5: Well, then I guess we'll get to the other main
- 30:04Speaker 5: selling point, because it's funny that it was the thing
- 30:07Speaker 5: that drew you in. And the thing that I noticed
- 30:09Speaker 5: so much watching this now is just like, it's so
- 30:13Speaker 5: teenage boys fantasy movie. Like, it is nothing but boobs. Like,
- 30:18Speaker 5: it is just like, I think two of the stories
- 30:21Speaker 5: maybe don't have full-on female nudity, but like, all of
- 30:24Speaker 5: them it's like I kind of give it a pass
- 30:26Speaker 5: because it was 1981 and like you just didn't see
- 30:29Speaker 5: that stuff at the time.
- 30:30Speaker 4: But also I mean I got to point out the
- 30:31Speaker 4: main character is a woman then she's like a kick-ass
- 30:33Speaker 4: warrior and yeah by the end and she like you know.
- 30:36Speaker 1: We at least get a good like chick that redeems
- 30:38Speaker 1: them you.
- 30:38Speaker 4: Know yeah yeah you know she's like the driving force
- 30:41Speaker 4: of the whole movie but I did yeah she kills
- 30:43Speaker 4: the Loch Nahr you know.
- 30:45Speaker 5: We've got a good amount of female co-hosts I kind
- 30:48Speaker 5: of wanted to get one in I wonder like getting
- 30:51Speaker 5: a take from it as a woman Like, does it
- 30:53Speaker 5: have no appeal? Like, there's just so much of it.
- 30:56Speaker 4: My wife loves it, you know, and she's, like, totally, like,
- 30:58Speaker 4: you know, like.
- 30:59Speaker 5: It's, like, deep-rooted in teenage boy stuff. But I'm also, like,
- 31:03Speaker 5: this is a different world now.
- 31:04Speaker 4: Oh, it's a totally different world.
- 31:06Speaker 5: At the time, like, yeah, one of the guys on
- 31:07Speaker 5: the documentary.
- 31:07Speaker 4: They were talking about how, like, they kind of, like, they're, like, well,
- 31:09Speaker 4: the Reagan era happened right after, and they snuck it.
- 31:11Speaker 4: They kind of, like, we just got it in, you know,
- 31:13Speaker 4: and it was, like, sort of 70s, like, you know.
- 31:16Speaker 4: I mean, I think the appeal, like, for me, too,
- 31:18Speaker 4: was just that it was just so, like, off-the-cuff, like, just.
- 31:21Speaker 4: fuck here it is and then we pick stories from
- 31:22Speaker 4: the magazine yeah and i think we picked our favorite
- 31:26Speaker 4: stories and and they actually they had them made and
- 31:29Speaker 4: heavy metal was always like kind of like that underground
- 31:30Speaker 4: magazine that you would you'd buy at the corner store
- 31:32Speaker 4: and just like i can't believe like i'm allowed to
- 31:35Speaker 4: buy this like it doesn't you don't have to be
- 31:37Speaker 4: 18 to buy it like you know and like and
- 31:38Speaker 4: do you know what i'm buying and you know my
- 31:40Speaker 4: parents didn't know what it was and yeah the guy
- 31:41Speaker 4: at the store that was selling to me didn't know
- 31:43Speaker 4: what it was but um yeah no you know it's
- 31:45Speaker 4: it yeah it's sci-fi fantasy comic books like it's but
- 31:49Speaker 4: it's adult it's an adult comic and.
- 31:51Speaker 5: But you can always sneak that stuff in too it's
- 31:53Speaker 5: like anything comics like parents aren't gonna read through it
- 31:56Speaker 5: certainly not back in the day they'd just be like
- 31:58Speaker 5: yeah whatever it's a comic book it's fine for kids
- 32:00Speaker 5: and like that kind of stuff even as it got
- 32:03Speaker 5: more and more mature like it nobody's take on it
- 32:06Speaker 5: changed parents were just like yeah dumb comic books even
- 32:08Speaker 5: though you know there's all kinds of cursing and violence
- 32:11Speaker 5: and plenty of nudity gets worked in.
- 32:13Speaker 4: And it's also coming off of like Fritz the cat
- 32:14Speaker 4: and all the, all the stuff that, you know, like, uh,
- 32:16Speaker 4: that they're doing. And, but like, I mean, it wasn't,
- 32:18Speaker 4: it wasn't of that, but it was like, you know,
- 32:20Speaker 4: that stuff was going on. And, and, you know, for me, like,
- 32:22Speaker 4: you know, seeing it as a kid, I was just
- 32:23Speaker 4: blown away that it's just like, it covered everything. And,
- 32:25Speaker 4: and for me now looking at it, it's not like
- 32:28Speaker 4: about like the, the, the sexual aspect, you know what
- 32:31Speaker 4: I mean? That's, that's cool. That's in there, but there's
- 32:32Speaker 4: a lot of other aspects in there. There's a really
- 32:34Speaker 4: good soundtrack, really good artwork. And, there's like good stories
- 32:37Speaker 4: and it's a bunch of different stories done by different animators,
- 32:40Speaker 4: you know, taken from different, you know, comic book artists,
- 32:44Speaker 4: you know, Richard Corbin and, You know, the whole crew.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Bernie Wrightson. Yeah, Bernie Wrightson.
- 32:49Speaker 5: Which, I guess, did you know any of those people
- 32:51Speaker 5: going in? Because now I look at it, it's just
- 32:53Speaker 5: like this who's who of everybody. But, like, even on, like,
- 32:56Speaker 5: the writing end, but, like, Dan O'Bannon doing stories.
- 32:59Speaker 4: When I saw it as a kid, like I was saying, like,
- 33:00Speaker 4: when I saw it as a kid, I didn't know
- 33:01Speaker 4: any of those people.
- 33:02Speaker 1: Like, you know, and later on.
- 33:04Speaker 4: Yeah, no, later on, I started collecting heavy metal magazines
- 33:07Speaker 4: more when I was, like, you know, kind of, like, 16.
- 33:09Speaker 4: And it was, like, probably, like, 89, 90 in. And
- 33:12Speaker 4: then I was realizing, like, oh, this is, like, Den. Like,
- 33:15Speaker 4: I would see Heavy Metal, I'm like, oh, Den, because
- 33:17Speaker 4: I know the cartoon. Like, I knew the cartoon before
- 33:19Speaker 4: I knew the magazine.
- 33:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:19Speaker 4: I was just a kid, you know?
- 33:21Speaker 1: Yeah, that was the way I did it, too.
- 33:22Speaker 4: It was my introduction to that mag.
- 33:23Speaker 5: I think I knew there was a magazine, but I
- 33:25Speaker 5: don't think I ever really got into it. And then
- 33:27Speaker 5: by the time I'd already seen the movie, I'm just like,
- 33:30Speaker 5: I was already sold on the movie, end of it.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, totally, yeah, yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 5: It's hard to go back the other way, I guess, but...
- 33:36Speaker 5: I was still buying comics, but for some reason, never
- 33:38Speaker 5: heavy metal.
- 33:39Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 4: I got into underground comics, like when I was more like,
- 33:42Speaker 4: you know, 16, my, my, my kind of older buddy was,
- 33:45Speaker 4: you know, got me into like hate and eight ball
- 33:47Speaker 4: and all that stuff, all the fanographic stuff. And then, uh, love,
- 33:51Speaker 4: love and rockets and Hernandez brothers. Uh, and then, you know,
- 33:54Speaker 4: like heavy metal. And that was just kind of along
- 33:56Speaker 4: with all that, you know, like it's comics, real comics,
- 33:59Speaker 4: real subjects for, I don't know.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Again, they were, probably skating by on just being comics
- 34:05Speaker 1: and had.
- 34:05Speaker 5: Pretty mature themes going on in a lot of those
- 34:08Speaker 5: and like you know again kids just reading comic.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Books you gotta go back to that time too and
- 34:12Speaker 4: there's just like you know there's like a lot of
- 34:14Speaker 4: boring shit and there's like I mean the punk rock
- 34:15Speaker 4: is going on and metal is going on but it was,
- 34:18Speaker 4: you know, it was a different time, you know, it
- 34:20Speaker 4: was a different time, like, it probably wouldn't fly right now,
- 34:22Speaker 4: but maybe it would, I mean, live action would be
- 34:24Speaker 4: kind of cool, like if they did it up, I
- 34:27Speaker 4: don't know.
- 34:27Speaker 5: Actually, when I bought, again, I said earlier, I re-bought
- 34:30Speaker 5: it because I didn't have, I was like, if there's
- 34:31Speaker 5: something I need on Blu-ray, obviously it's heavy metal. So
- 34:34Speaker 5: I went, I was like, okay, this is a good
- 34:35Speaker 5: excuse to go pick it up. So when I did,
- 34:38Speaker 5: the guy selling it to me, who actually I think
- 34:40Speaker 5: listens to the show, I think I recognized him, but
- 34:43Speaker 5: I think he was selling it to me, he goes, man,
- 34:45Speaker 5: I hope they never remake this. And I was like,
- 34:48Speaker 5: At the time, I was like, why would you? And
- 34:50Speaker 5: we kind of had a sequel along the way. But
- 34:52Speaker 5: I'm just like, now that I think about it, I'm like, oh,
- 34:54Speaker 5: the live action with a lot of CG. I could
- 34:56Speaker 5: almost see them trying to do that now, like a
- 34:59Speaker 5: live action CG green screen version of all this. I
- 35:04Speaker 5: fear it, but I could almost see somebody wanting.
- 35:07Speaker 4: To do it. I was pretty, like, not to get
- 35:08Speaker 4: on the Star Wars thing, but I was pretty happy
- 35:10Speaker 4: with the way that the new Star Wars shit, because
- 35:11Speaker 4: when I heard Disney bought Star Wars, I was like,
- 35:12Speaker 4: this is going to suck, but actually, like, it turned
- 35:14Speaker 4: out really good. You know, the prequels stunk.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Disney is the one that they're doing.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Yeah, totally, yeah.
- 35:18Speaker 4: I mean, Rogue One was really good, you know, so
- 35:19Speaker 4: if they could do it in that sort of sense
- 35:20Speaker 4: where they paid attention to the detail and, You know,
- 35:22Speaker 4: the stories and stuff.
- 35:23Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Again, I'm afraid it would go. And I always say
- 35:27Speaker 5: that with anything.
- 35:28Speaker 4: The right person did it.
- 35:29Speaker 5: Anything that's like a remake. Like, I feel like what's
- 35:32Speaker 5: the point? Especially if you're going to do exactly the
- 35:34Speaker 5: same thing. If you're going to not.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I get it.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I get it.
- 35:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 5: I was like the other way. I was like, it's
- 35:39Speaker 5: a shame there aren't more. Because they kept like, even
- 35:41Speaker 5: in the documentary, they're showing all these different comics over
- 35:44Speaker 5: the years.
- 35:44Speaker 1: And I'm like, why aren't we? You know, we got
- 35:46Speaker 1: like five stories. Like, why don't we have.
- 35:48Speaker 5: Just a series of those going on which granted at
- 35:51Speaker 5: the time it was too much work but it would
- 35:53Speaker 5: be interesting now if they wanted to pick it up
- 35:55Speaker 5: and do like a new not officially a reboot but
- 35:59Speaker 5: again kind of like they did with star wars we're
- 36:00Speaker 5: gonna kind of do the same thing we did before
- 36:02Speaker 5: only now we've got technology to kind of beef everything
- 36:05Speaker 5: up so it'd be interesting if they almost took more
- 36:08Speaker 5: now i'm thinking more like a sin city version Where
- 36:10Speaker 5: it's like, it's sort of a comic book, but it's
- 36:12Speaker 5: live action. They can work in green screen if they
- 36:14Speaker 5: need to.
- 36:15Speaker 4: Could be segments too. Could be a live, could be
- 36:17Speaker 4: a Sin City style. Could be a, one could be
- 36:21Speaker 4: a comic. One could be an animation, you know.
- 36:24Speaker 2: Muppets.
- 36:28Speaker 1: That's Disney. It can all come together.
- 36:30Speaker 4: Like Meet the Feebles.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 5: Again, I don't know if you can remake Meet the
- 36:36Speaker 5: Feebles either. It's its own weird entity.
- 36:39Speaker 4: I guess what we're sort of.
- 36:43Speaker 4: I guess it's talking about if heavy metal was to
- 36:45Speaker 4: be done. Yeah, a new one. And we know one
- 36:47Speaker 4: segment's animated, one segment's live action, one segment's like... Which.
- 36:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Some of this, that's the thing. I don't think I.
- 36:56Speaker 5: it's been several years since I watched it. So rewatching
- 36:59Speaker 5: and I'm going, wait, I don't think that's animated. So like,
- 37:02Speaker 5: I don't think I realized how much of their, again,
- 37:04Speaker 5: they're kind of edgy with the way, like they say,
- 37:07Speaker 5: like they were talking about it going, we were just
- 37:08Speaker 5: sort of making up the rules as we went. So
- 37:11Speaker 5: it's like that intro there where we get the car
- 37:14Speaker 5: that comes out of the space shuttle and, is a
- 37:15Speaker 5: real car and a real guy. And, like, they shot
- 37:18Speaker 5: it and it's just sort.
- 37:19Speaker 4: Of drawn over. He has a rotoscope.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:22Speaker 5: I think that one was even more bare bones than rotoscope. Now,
- 37:25Speaker 5: later they get to, like, the John Candy one and, like,
- 37:29Speaker 5: the girl at the end. I think they were all
- 37:31Speaker 5: rotoscope stuff. But that first one, I think, was almost just, like,
- 37:34Speaker 5: they took him in, shot, like, shots of him in
- 37:38Speaker 5: the car in the middle of the studio there and
- 37:41Speaker 5: then just, like, went back and colored it almost.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Like, just sort of hand.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Colored things to give it a little more of an
- 37:46Speaker 5: animated look.
- 37:47Speaker 1: But and then as we went.
- 37:49Speaker 5: On, I was just like, there are other moments when
- 37:50Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, that doesn't look because then you get
- 37:53Speaker 5: to like the what may be my favorite one, the.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Bomber when I love.
- 37:58Speaker 4: That your favorite one.
- 37:59Speaker 1: It's so DC Comics. It really is.
- 38:03Speaker 4: I jump around a lot.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:05Speaker 5: I mean, it doesn't have much to it. I kind
- 38:08Speaker 5: of wish it was more of a story. But just
- 38:09Speaker 5: for the visual, I also think it has a.
- 38:11Speaker 4: That scared the shit out of me as it gets interrupted.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Well, no, it's creepy.
- 38:14Speaker 5: And that's, I think, why I respond to it. It's
- 38:16Speaker 5: the one that's horror more than sci-fi on the other ones.
- 38:19Speaker 5: But I like it, I think, because it also has
- 38:21Speaker 5: a really cool look to it. And some of it
- 38:23Speaker 5: is just a different style of artwork. But at the
- 38:27Speaker 5: same time, if you watch that documentary, they actually built
- 38:30Speaker 5: that plane. It's like a 10-foot model.
- 38:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a model.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Then they reversed the colors so that they could fill in.
- 38:37Speaker 4: Yeah, they drew it all the black. They did all
- 38:39Speaker 4: the lines in white and they flipped it to get
- 38:42Speaker 4: a black line.
- 38:42Speaker 1: And then they went back and sort of drew it.
- 38:45Speaker 5: Once again, more painstakingly than just drawing it probably, but
- 38:49Speaker 5: they wanted to get a different look on it and
- 38:50Speaker 5: get it sort of realistic.
- 38:52Speaker 1: For the planes.
- 38:53Speaker 4: When I was a kid, that was my favorite one.
- 38:54Speaker 4: That was the one that actually scared me and I
- 38:55Speaker 4: was like, I could identify with it. I was like,
- 38:57Speaker 4: this is really scary. And my favorite, I mean, and
- 39:01Speaker 4: then I liked Harry Canyon a lot.
- 39:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 39:03Speaker 4: That was like a big one.
- 39:04Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 39:05Speaker 4: And then I go to, and then Den forever has
- 39:07Speaker 4: been my favorite, you know, but I go back and
- 39:08Speaker 4: forth and like, but my all time, my favorite favorite
- 39:12Speaker 4: is the So Beautiful, So Dangerous, So Beautiful and So Dangerous.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Possibly the silliest one.
- 39:18Speaker 4: The silliest one, but it's the most like, for me,
- 39:21Speaker 4: it's like the most like, You know, they're just tripping
- 39:23Speaker 4: out in space driving that fucking, you know, giant that
- 39:26Speaker 4: one and the.
- 39:27Speaker 5: Music that one represents everybody that used to go see
- 39:30Speaker 5: it at the midnight movies oh really yeah because i'm
- 39:33Speaker 5: pretty sure that was the one everybody's like yeah like
- 39:36Speaker 5: they're just like these guys.
- 39:37Speaker 4: And that ship is so cool and like it's just
- 39:39Speaker 4: like it's like the it's the ultimate like for me
- 39:41Speaker 4: it's just like the ultimate like this is like they're
- 39:42Speaker 4: having a ship spaceship it's like sci-fi fantasy like That
- 39:45Speaker 4: one's super cool. I go back and forth a lot
- 39:47Speaker 4: and I'll go through, but that's right now. That's my
- 39:49Speaker 4: favorite one in that.
- 39:49Speaker 5: And then I feel like the, the last one is
- 39:52Speaker 5: almost the most forgettable. And it's funny cause it's the
- 39:55Speaker 5: longest one. So again, I'm assuming half the people like
- 39:57Speaker 5: in the theater probably stumbled out and were smoking in
- 39:59Speaker 5: the parking lot or something. Like, I feel like that's
- 40:01Speaker 5: the one nobody talks about, even though it is the
- 40:03Speaker 5: poster art. Like it's maybe the most iconic, but.
- 40:07Speaker 4: I think it was meant to be the main, the
- 40:08Speaker 4: main theme, the big story.
- 40:10Speaker 1: But, and that's the thing.
- 40:10Speaker 5: I think I didn't even remember it that well and rewatching.
- 40:13Speaker 5: And I was like, it's got all the really cool visuals.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Like it does that fly through that goes on like.
- 40:19Speaker 4: A really long, like that was the showboat scene.
- 40:21Speaker 5: They were just like, look what we can do, which again,
- 40:23Speaker 5: they built sets for like, they actually built sets to
- 40:27Speaker 5: then shoot with a physical movie camera and then go
- 40:30Speaker 5: back and actually draw over top of everything. It's insane.
- 40:35Speaker 5: Like it's, again, it's stuff now that people wouldn't do
- 40:38Speaker 5: because it's so much easier. Like you can do it
- 40:40Speaker 5: with CG. So why would you, but like, they didn't
- 40:43Speaker 5: have that option so it kind of makes it more
- 40:45Speaker 5: awesome yeah I think it's part of it that it
- 40:50Speaker 5: just sort of it incorporates that geeky obsession of just
- 40:54Speaker 5: like I don't know how to do this so I'm
- 40:55Speaker 5: going to find a way it's like that dedication to
- 40:59Speaker 5: your nerd.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Love yeah groundbreaking that.
- 41:02Speaker 5: One looking back and it's funny they all kind of
- 41:05Speaker 5: fall into different genres like you definitely get the neo-noir
- 41:08Speaker 5: thing in the beginning he's just doing a big film
- 41:10Speaker 5: noir detective story only it's set in space new york
- 41:14Speaker 5: but like it's yeah.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Yeah talking about harry canyon that was like um you
- 41:18Speaker 4: know it's like kind of taxi driver but it was
- 41:19Speaker 4: also before blade runner and it was like uh and
- 41:22Speaker 4: they and they talked in the documentary about how that
- 41:24Speaker 4: you know fifth element definitely grabbed stuff from that you
- 41:26Speaker 4: know it's just cool a lot of movies did yeah
- 41:28Speaker 4: from that whole movie but um yeah that was a
- 41:30Speaker 4: very cool like that's like the travis pickle like you
- 41:33Speaker 4: know new york city like future like.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and even the fifth element, him being a cab driver. Like,
- 41:38Speaker 5: it really, which still is taken kind of from a
- 41:41Speaker 5: Mobius story, isn't it? Or is it, it's another, I
- 41:44Speaker 5: know it's from another big French comic. It's the original
- 41:47Speaker 5: comic that he took.
- 41:49Speaker 4: By the way, I'm not, like, a professional on heavy metal.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I'm not, like, a.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Oh, no, I, yeah, I'm with you.
- 41:52Speaker 4: You know, like, I've seen the movie, like, probably, like,
- 41:55Speaker 4: 50 times. But, and, you know, I got the comics,
- 41:57Speaker 4: but I still don't know everything about it. Yeah. I'm not, like,
- 42:01Speaker 4: I'm geeked on the movie, but I'm not, like, I
- 42:02Speaker 4: don't know, like. you know, everything about it. So I'm
- 42:04Speaker 4: not like, I'm just, well, that's kind of why I
- 42:06Speaker 4: was just like, I just want to talk about this.
- 42:09Speaker 1: I like figuring out a movie and just like, I
- 42:11Speaker 1: almost don't.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Want to know everything about it. You know, like I
- 42:13Speaker 4: know enough and I enjoy it.
- 42:16Speaker 5: I think I like knowing the extra stuff that they did.
- 42:18Speaker 5: Like I, again, I don't think I remembered how much
- 42:20Speaker 5: of it they did rotoscope. So they really did take
- 42:23Speaker 5: all these actors and like use them as like a
- 42:26Speaker 5: model almost to go back and get real human movements and,
- 42:29Speaker 5: So that didn't seem so weird and awkward, especially her
- 42:32Speaker 5: at the end getting dressed. And like, that's all very, yeah.
- 42:36Speaker 5: It's like, it's good to know that they put that
- 42:38Speaker 5: much work and time into it. When again, now I
- 42:41Speaker 5: feel like that probably wouldn't happen anymore.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:43Speaker 4: It's genius how they did it, you know, going to
- 42:44Speaker 4: different studios and having like, you're working on this story
- 42:47Speaker 4: and you're working.
- 42:47Speaker 2: On this story.
- 42:48Speaker 5: But again, being kind of ahead of its time. Cause there,
- 42:51Speaker 5: there's also another shot that I was like, it is,
- 42:54Speaker 5: they're going through trying to, it's one of those in
- 42:56Speaker 5: the middle there. And like, it just does a landscape
- 42:58Speaker 5: and then you see a creature eat another creature and like,
- 43:01Speaker 5: I'm like, that's very out of that shot from Return
- 43:05Speaker 5: of the Jedi and it's like, that was two years
- 43:08Speaker 5: before Return of the Jedi.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 5: It's right about when Empire was coming out but it
- 43:12Speaker 5: was before, I don't remember any of those cheesy like,
- 43:14Speaker 5: shots of the landscape and animals and other animals.
- 43:17Speaker 4: I think a lot of people at that time in
- 43:17Speaker 4: that world were on the same kind of page, you know, like,
- 43:20Speaker 4: everyone's kind of dipping from the same pot, you know.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Lucas had to have seen this. He had to know
- 43:24Speaker 5: half those guys probably so it's like, I feel like,
- 43:27Speaker 5: because even that's something I think he returned to. I
- 43:29Speaker 5: think there's a shot kind of similar to it again
- 43:32Speaker 5: in episode two. So it's like, I feel like it
- 43:34Speaker 5: is one of those things. He's kind of, he likes
- 43:36Speaker 5: that landscape showing the planet before the action gets there
- 43:40Speaker 5: kind of thing.
- 43:40Speaker 1: And like, you see that with Heavy Metal.
- 43:42Speaker 4: They do that a lot. Yeah, probably.
- 43:47Speaker 5: But again, I think this is so, so iconic at
- 43:50Speaker 5: this point that like, I feel like of the geeks
- 43:53Speaker 5: who saw it, they all went on to make their
- 43:54Speaker 5: own thing. and started kind of taking from it. So yeah,
- 43:58Speaker 5: I think that's, yeah, I think that's definitely part of it.
- 44:02Speaker 5: But yeah, that, um, it does kind of hit all
- 44:04Speaker 5: the genres too. Cause then that last one is a Western.
- 44:08Speaker 5: I mean, it just, she goes into a saloon with
- 44:10Speaker 5: swinging doors.
- 44:11Speaker 4: She's kind of the, they talk about it in that documentary. Again,
- 44:14Speaker 4: I go back to that, but it's like, she's like
- 44:15Speaker 4: the Clint Eastwood character, you.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Know, and doesn't talk to me the entire time.
- 44:19Speaker 4: You know, hits that guy with a mug. And when I,
- 44:21Speaker 4: when I rewatch it the last time, which was on
- 44:24Speaker 4: the plane coming here, I, um, I noticed a lot
- 44:27Speaker 4: of stuff I didn't notice. I was really looking at
- 44:28Speaker 4: backgrounds and stuff going on and so neat, you know,
- 44:30Speaker 4: just to kind of like, there's all those things that
- 44:32Speaker 4: you don't see. They put a lot of work into it.
- 44:34Speaker 4: I actually, um, I actually own, I bought one of the, um,
- 44:38Speaker 4: animation stills in the film and it's, it's, uh, when, um,
- 44:42Speaker 4: the den scene when they're sacrificing, uh, the girl.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Into, okay, into the pool or whatever.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:49Speaker 4: And, um, I was like, I gotta, I gotta buy that.
- 44:52Speaker 4: Came with a sketch, came with the, uh, the animation
- 44:54Speaker 4: cell and, uh, I've got another one of the guy
- 44:56Speaker 4: in the beginning of the movie when they're searching for
- 44:58Speaker 4: the Loch Nahr. And there's a guy with a metal detector.
- 45:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:02Speaker 4: And he's trying to find it.
- 45:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:03Speaker 4: And I've got one of those shots of him. So
- 45:05Speaker 4: it's kind of cool to own that. I've also got
- 45:07Speaker 4: a heavy metal at Comic-Con. I bought it about five
- 45:10Speaker 4: years ago. I bought a painting. And it's not a cover.
- 45:12Speaker 4: I checked with some of the guys at Heavy Metal.
- 45:14Speaker 4: I'm like, hey, I got this thing. And I think
- 45:15Speaker 4: it was for a T-shirt or some like ad or something.
- 45:17Speaker 4: But it was like this kind of shitty but awesome airbrushing.
- 45:20Speaker 1: And it's... Original era offshoot artwork.
- 45:23Speaker 2: It looks like Bridget Nielsen.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a robot girl of Bridget Nielsen. She's a
- 45:26Speaker 4: robot girl with like short blonde hair. And there's a girl...
- 45:30Speaker 4: And there's a girl... She's looking into a pond and
- 45:34Speaker 4: it's kind of like her reflection is a robot. It's
- 45:36Speaker 4: kind of cool.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 45:38Speaker 4: I was like, I gotta buy this.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I can't remember that being part of that original run.
- 45:41Speaker 1: So that's cool, finding that stuff. But there are such
- 45:44Speaker 1: iconic shots. Like to me, the one that always.
- 45:48Speaker 5: And again, maybe more of the horror aspect that the
- 45:51Speaker 5: shot of the girl when the orb starts talking to
- 45:53Speaker 5: her and that green glow and that horror on her
- 45:56Speaker 5: face is like so.
- 45:57Speaker 1: The little girl at the beginning.
- 45:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It's so like amazing.
- 46:00Speaker 5: Like to this day, like it's still kind of like
- 46:03Speaker 5: such a horrific image that I'm like... They just kind
- 46:06Speaker 5: of knew how to play all of that stuff.
- 46:09Speaker 4: When I was a kid too, I saw it. I
- 46:10Speaker 4: was like probably that girl's age, I guess.
- 46:13Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Probably third grade, you know. So like I was like
- 46:15Speaker 4: could have been someone from my class, you know. So I...
- 46:18Speaker 4: connected you know it was like this is like scary
- 46:20Speaker 4: you know yeah this is like not a it this
- 46:24Speaker 4: isn't like a feel-good you know some of it is
- 46:26Speaker 4: but this is like a slightly horror too you.
- 46:28Speaker 5: Know it's it's kind of a downer movie i mean
- 46:31Speaker 5: if you're not again i think that's why it worked
- 46:33Speaker 5: as like everybody goes and gets stoned to watch it
- 46:35Speaker 5: because like watching it like you get to the ones
- 46:38Speaker 5: in the middle like the um what's the space court
- 46:42Speaker 5: and the one with the captain stearns Oh, yeah, the
- 46:45Speaker 5: kind of stern one, yeah.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Like, it is so weird.
- 46:47Speaker 9: Oh, that's rough.
- 46:48Speaker 5: It's the Bernie Wrightson one, so it's like the artwork
- 46:50Speaker 5: looks great, but by the end, you're just like, so
- 46:53Speaker 5: everybody just screws everybody over. Like, money fixes everything. Everybody
- 46:57Speaker 5: screws everybody over.
- 46:57Speaker 4: And stabs them in the back. Yeah, there's so many, like,
- 46:59Speaker 4: Stephen King elements. And, yeah, it's just, like, the storytelling's, like,
- 47:04Speaker 4: so twisted, you know? Like, EC, Stephen King, Creepshow, you know,
- 47:08Speaker 4: that sort of thing. You know, like, EC horror, like,
- 47:11Speaker 4: very cool.
- 47:12Speaker 1: And watching the.
- 47:13Speaker 5: captain stern when i'm like that's zap branigan from futurama
- 47:16Speaker 5: is like he is that guy it's just like they
- 47:19Speaker 5: turned him into an ongoing character but like he's still
- 47:22Speaker 5: like square jawed you know super walking testosterone like he's
- 47:28Speaker 5: just like full of himself and kind of a jerk
- 47:31Speaker 5: but yet again he achieves all the goals because he's
- 47:34Speaker 5: manly man and like that was kind of funny scene that.
- 47:37Speaker 4: What a great ending to that to that scene yeah
- 47:39Speaker 4: i mean that was like so another ec shocker it
- 47:41Speaker 4: was like whoa damn it's like the big crazy dude
- 47:44Speaker 4: like ah.
- 47:45Speaker 5: Yeah and again the little nerdy guy just kind of
- 47:47Speaker 5: gets screwed over like yeah kids get used to this
- 47:50Speaker 5: like this is how life works yeah the rich guy
- 47:53Speaker 5: took care of his problems and then screwed you over
- 47:55Speaker 5: anyway yeah so again it's got it's got some pretty
- 47:59Speaker 5: grim moments in there if you go looking for them
- 48:01Speaker 5: but yeah i don't know i there's so much to
- 48:04Speaker 5: it that like I am.
- 48:06Speaker 4: I like the, my favorite, I think, scene, like, or
- 48:10Speaker 4: my favorite part from that is, like, as a poster, like,
- 48:14Speaker 4: I like the poster that they did, but I would have,
- 48:17Speaker 4: I prefer the ship, you know, from, you know, so beautiful,
- 48:21Speaker 4: so dangerous, like, that ship, like, would have been, I
- 48:22Speaker 4: don't know, that's, like, so iconic, you know?
- 48:25Speaker 5: Even, like, because, again, that poster has become so iconic
- 48:27Speaker 5: over the years, but I'm like, that, really isn't what
- 48:30Speaker 5: she looks like in the movie. Like I kind of
- 48:31Speaker 5: think she looks so much better in the movie.
- 48:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:33Speaker 5: It doesn't look like she doesn't have that crazy hair.
- 48:35Speaker 4: I got a feeling that somebody was hired to draw
- 48:37Speaker 4: that being like, here's some like drawings in the movie
- 48:40Speaker 4: and we're not done the movie yet kind of thing,
- 48:41Speaker 4: which happens to artists. You get the job and you
- 48:45Speaker 4: get to do a job, but the actual job you're
- 48:47Speaker 4: working for ain't done yet.
- 48:48Speaker 5: Yeah. Like kind of like, you know, just wing it,
- 48:51Speaker 5: do it your way, which again, it has like super
- 48:53Speaker 5: eighties hair and like, she's just, you know, long hair again.
- 48:56Speaker 5: She's more of a seventies girl in the hair, but yeah.
- 48:58Speaker 5: it's just sort of old school long hair, but like, yeah, it's,
- 49:01Speaker 5: it's a weird punk rock thing going on on the poster.
- 49:03Speaker 4: So yeah, totally.
- 49:04Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Somebody was trying to do their own thing.
- 49:06Speaker 4: Yep. And she has like blonde hair on the poster
- 49:08Speaker 4: and she's got white hair.
- 49:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:10Speaker 5: Or that weird two tone white hair on white hair. Yeah.
- 49:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 5: Which is a cool look actually. Cause yeah, I think she,
- 49:17Speaker 5: I think they said she was supposed to be blonde originally.
- 49:19Speaker 5: Like it's, I kind of like the look they give
- 49:21Speaker 5: her there.
- 49:23Speaker 4: So the soundtrack is... It's kind of funny because they...
- 49:27Speaker 4: Not funny, but it's... I like the soundtrack a lot.
- 49:30Speaker 5: I think it's fucking amazing.
- 49:31Speaker 4: When I hear those songs, those songs bring me back
- 49:34Speaker 4: to the movie. Oh, yeah. And, you know, I bought
- 49:37Speaker 4: the record... of course, on the record. I have a
- 49:39Speaker 4: few of them and I'm like, I play it all
- 49:40Speaker 4: the time. And when I, when I play it, when
- 49:42Speaker 4: I'm doing my art, when I'm drawing and stuff, it like,
- 49:45Speaker 4: I get the movie vibe, you know, it gives me
- 49:47Speaker 4: that movie vibe. And that's, it's kind of like what
- 49:49Speaker 4: they did. I think it's like, it's sort of dangerous
- 49:52Speaker 4: because you almost date yourself in a way. If you're
- 49:54Speaker 4: going to do a movie, they have a good score.
- 49:56Speaker 4: The score is amazing. But if you're going to throw like, uh,
- 49:58Speaker 4: like modern day music at the time, um, you're going
- 50:01Speaker 4: to throw modern day music into a, into a movie,
- 50:04Speaker 4: you run the risk of dating yourself. But I think, um,
- 50:08Speaker 4: Maybe because like it was like disappeared for so long
- 50:10Speaker 4: because of the licensing rights for the music. They weren't
- 50:13Speaker 4: able to put it out on video or DVD until
- 50:16Speaker 4: like the 90s. I think they were when it came back,
- 50:19Speaker 4: it was like, this is perfect. You know, like it's
- 50:21Speaker 4: like sort of like. We hit that weird wave.
- 50:24Speaker 5: It's like, you know, you had that stuff kind of
- 50:26Speaker 5: went out and then by the 90s and especially like
- 50:29Speaker 5: the later 90s, like it all became cool again.
- 50:32Speaker 2: Yes, exactly.
- 50:33Speaker 4: How a lot of it happens to everything. It happens
- 50:35Speaker 4: to everything, yeah. Everything that's super rad goes away and
- 50:38Speaker 4: it's like becomes douchey to everybody but then it comes
- 50:41Speaker 4: back and that happens to fucking everything. It happens to
- 50:43Speaker 4: video games, it happens to fucking pinball, it happens to
- 50:46Speaker 4: like every band that's cool, you know, like it comes back,
- 50:49Speaker 4: you know, in like different generations and, you know, people
- 50:51Speaker 4: get older and, new kids come up and discover the
- 50:55Speaker 4: tunes and it's like, this is cool.
- 50:56Speaker 2: You know?
- 50:56Speaker 4: So it's, yeah. So that they, they, they won on
- 50:59Speaker 4: that level for sure.
- 51:00Speaker 5: You know, like, and I really like it again for
- 51:03Speaker 5: future reference. I started a spinoff show that is just
- 51:06Speaker 5: music from movies. So you're welcome on there anytime too,
- 51:09Speaker 5: but we just kind of pick stuff for movies. And like,
- 51:12Speaker 5: that's kind of half the reason I wanted to do
- 51:14Speaker 5: that because I think it is a weird little like
- 51:17Speaker 5: alchemy that comes together when it's like the perfect soundtrack
- 51:20Speaker 5: that goes so perfectly with the music. and the movie
- 51:24Speaker 5: and like it creates it creates its own little world
- 51:28Speaker 5: like when you listen to the soundtrack it really does
- 51:30Speaker 5: fit because you're saying that reminded me it's like it
- 51:33Speaker 5: really does put you in that mindset of like what
- 51:35Speaker 5: was going on in the movie and then just sort
- 51:37Speaker 5: of like your your state of mind when you saw
- 51:40Speaker 5: the movie like it still works as like its own
- 51:42Speaker 5: little like time travel like as soon as you were
- 51:45Speaker 5: listening to the soundtrack you're just like oh yeah i
- 51:46Speaker 5: remember the first time i saw this movie like it
- 51:49Speaker 5: it all kind of works as its own weird thing
- 51:52Speaker 5: So that was one of those, like, it also shows
- 51:55Speaker 5: that you're a huge movie property when you have more
- 51:58Speaker 5: than one theme song.
- 51:59Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:59Speaker 5: Because there are two heavy metal songs within the same soundtrack.
- 52:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:03Speaker 5: And I'm like, I think that, you know, Sammy got
- 52:07Speaker 5: more of the attention, but listening to it now, that
- 52:08Speaker 5: Blue Oyster Cult song is so damn cool.
- 52:10Speaker 2: Yeah, man.
- 52:11Speaker 4: All the songs, you know, all the songs, like, all
- 52:13Speaker 4: of them, you know, I just, like, I hear any
- 52:15Speaker 4: one of them, like, any time, and I'm like, heavy metal,
- 52:17Speaker 4: you know, brings me back. And probably a lot of
- 52:19Speaker 4: the people that were doing the soundtrack started doing the
- 52:21Speaker 4: songs at the time were like yeah whatever i'll just
- 52:24Speaker 4: you can use this song you know but like they
- 52:27Speaker 4: probably didn't realize it but like you know a lot
- 52:29Speaker 4: of people uh reference their you know like sammy hagar
- 52:31Speaker 4: shit you know it's like dude you were in heavy
- 52:33Speaker 4: metal that's like you.
- 52:35Speaker 5: Know the soundtrack might outlive your band like sometimes that
- 52:38Speaker 5: happens yeah yeah but the uh they're also like again
- 52:41Speaker 5: they're at that time period and they're kind of straddling
- 52:44Speaker 5: both ends of music again they've got black sabbath on
- 52:47Speaker 5: there but they also had devo on so it's.
- 52:49Speaker 4: Like they're kind of moving into.
- 52:51Speaker 5: That weird like what the 80s would bring with it
- 52:53Speaker 5: as they just kind of heading into the 80s there
- 52:56Speaker 5: and it's like we've got our old school like you
- 52:58Speaker 5: know sammy hagar and black sabbath and we've got those
- 53:01Speaker 5: kind of bands but we're also kind of working in
- 53:04Speaker 5: the weird 80s that are coming towards us so the
- 53:07Speaker 5: fact that that this band playing in the uh the
- 53:11Speaker 5: saloon more or less is sort of modeled after deep
- 53:13Speaker 5: like that's where they're playing that other song of theirs.
- 53:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 4: It's a weird band.
- 53:18Speaker 1: To be the weird band that Devo was.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 53:21Speaker 4: Again, you got to go back and realize that like
- 53:23Speaker 4: anything that came after that didn't exist yet.
- 53:25Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 53:26Speaker 4: So if you can go back and realize, and that's
- 53:28Speaker 4: with a lot of movies too, right? If you can
- 53:29Speaker 4: just kind of like, okay, when this movie was made,
- 53:31Speaker 4: everything that happened after it didn't exist. So, you know,
- 53:34Speaker 4: think about that, you know, because you can go back
- 53:35Speaker 4: and like criticize and be like, oh, they should have
- 53:37Speaker 4: done this, they should have done that. But, you know, man,
- 53:39Speaker 4: like to get a project like that done and, you know, that's,
- 53:41Speaker 4: I don't know, I think it's really cool.
- 53:44Speaker 5: You know, And that they actually like, it's not like
- 53:46Speaker 5: they just happened into all this, like listening to Ivan
- 53:49Speaker 5: Reitman talk about it. Like he was purposely planning all
- 53:53Speaker 5: of this. Like he really was sort of pushing the
- 53:55Speaker 5: envelope and knowingly doing so. He's like, I, I, you know,
- 53:58Speaker 5: I had a comic mind I wanted to add. I
- 54:00Speaker 5: was pushing really hard to make sure we added some
- 54:03Speaker 5: comedy in there because it's, it would be pretty serious without,
- 54:07Speaker 5: you know, that's, it's a good mix it's a total
- 54:09Speaker 5: yeah i mean that that the the one with john
- 54:11Speaker 5: candy without his voiceover is probably pretty damn serious like
- 54:15Speaker 5: if you just have the story without his like modern
- 54:17Speaker 5: day 80s teenage kid take on it yeah like it's
- 54:20Speaker 5: pretty grim but like a lot of stars aligned you
- 54:22Speaker 5: know you had him and it's like it's it's all
- 54:25Speaker 5: of a sudden it's funny now because it's john candy
- 54:27Speaker 5: and he's talking about his dork.
- 54:28Speaker 4: And yeah yeah that's the part everybody remembers yeah yeah.
- 54:32Speaker 5: But it's also like it's it's pushing the the envelope
- 54:35Speaker 5: on the when he talks about his dork.
- 54:36Speaker 4: Sorry to interrupt but it's like it's like of course
- 54:38Speaker 4: he says that because like my fucking third grade you
- 54:40Speaker 4: know brain was like like my dork hanging out like
- 54:43Speaker 4: that's yeah of course I didn't even think twice about
- 54:45Speaker 4: it I was like yeah of course like I just
- 54:46Speaker 4: don't want to be here like naked you know like.
- 54:48Speaker 5: Well, again, it taps in so perfectly that, that mindset
- 54:51Speaker 5: of like, you know, every third grade kid is like,
- 54:53Speaker 5: you know, this is what they're looking for. They're looking for,
- 54:55Speaker 5: you know, naked girls and swords and monsters. And like,
- 54:58Speaker 5: it just sort of taps into like all the things
- 55:01Speaker 5: you're probably not supposed to be into, but you know
- 55:03Speaker 5: that you are anyway. So yeah, I think that still
- 55:07Speaker 5: kind of works. It's, it's very of its time period
- 55:10Speaker 5: and very gender specific, but like, I think it is
- 55:13Speaker 5: funny now. Like, Again, the other stuff. Like, he was
- 55:17Speaker 5: very specific about the music, too. So, it's like, there
- 55:20Speaker 5: were a handful of movies that started doing that, that
- 55:22Speaker 5: started tailoring. Like, the 80s would become synonymous with, like,
- 55:26Speaker 5: the names of the bands on the poster, like, above
- 55:28Speaker 5: the stars' names. Like, they would put more time into
- 55:31Speaker 5: building the soundtrack sometimes for this, like, G-level movie that, like,
- 55:35Speaker 5: they were going to bring people in with just the
- 55:36Speaker 5: soundtrack because they didn't really have very good actors. So,
- 55:39Speaker 5: it's like, you saw that happen a lot in the 80s,
- 55:40Speaker 5: but it hadn't kicked in yet. So, like, this is,
- 55:42Speaker 5: once again, like, somebody with forethought going... I'm going to
- 55:45Speaker 5: put together this really great soundtrack with all these bands
- 55:47Speaker 5: of the moment. And like, I'm going to tailor it
- 55:50Speaker 5: very specifically to go with this movie.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:52Speaker 4: And this is a generation before ours that did this,
- 55:54Speaker 4: you know? So like, I mean, our generation, of course,
- 55:56Speaker 4: and other generations do like things differently because they've got
- 55:59Speaker 4: stuff like that to build on. And, you know, it's like,
- 56:01Speaker 4: you can, you know, everyone realizes that it's like, yeah,
- 56:04Speaker 4: it's like, you know, sky's the limit and the world's
- 56:06Speaker 4: your oyster. But like, you know, uh, back then, yeah,
- 56:09Speaker 4: they definitely, you know.
- 56:11Speaker 1: I mean, really all they had to go on was Baschke.
- 56:13Speaker 5: Like he's, He's really the only person that was doing
- 56:15Speaker 5: anything that wasn't kiddie-oriented animation.
- 56:18Speaker 2: Yep, yep. He was.
- 56:19Speaker 4: Yep, it was.
- 56:19Speaker 1: And his was just weird.
- 56:21Speaker 2: He was the dude.
- 56:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it was weird. It was fucking weird. You know,
- 56:24Speaker 4: I mean, looking at his, like, documentaries and stuff, it's fascinating.
- 56:27Speaker 4: He's like, I just... I got sick of, like, working in,
- 56:31Speaker 4: you know, like, the kind of, like, Saturday morning cartoon
- 56:34Speaker 4: style or, like, you know, kind of light, fluffy, fun
- 56:38Speaker 4: movies for kids. Like, I want to do stuff for adults, like,
- 56:40Speaker 4: people my age, like, cartoons because, you know.
- 56:42Speaker 5: I don't think I realized he was that straight-laced.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Because I did. I just knew him from all that.
- 56:47Speaker 5: And he had quite a few movies that were weird and, again,
- 56:50Speaker 5: very cult-oriented. So I assumed he just sort of came
- 56:54Speaker 5: up and started doing his own thing. But, like, yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 5: going on IMDb and then looking back at his other credits,
- 56:58Speaker 5: I'm like, he is all kinds of generic Saturday morning
- 57:01Speaker 5: cartoon stuff. He's... heckles and jackals he's doing that kind
- 57:06Speaker 5: of level.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Of stuff it's very mainstream he got sick of working
- 57:09Speaker 4: in the studio you know I'm just going to do
- 57:11Speaker 4: my own thing and his Wizards came out at the
- 57:14Speaker 4: same time as Star Wars you probably knew about that
- 57:16Speaker 4: I don't know if you guys have covered that in
- 57:17Speaker 4: your podcast.
- 57:18Speaker 5: We haven't done a full episode on it but yeah
- 57:20Speaker 5: we've I've talked to William Stout over the years and
- 57:23Speaker 5: we're going to do another episode with him I'm working
- 57:25Speaker 5: on so yeah I know he did the poster art
- 57:28Speaker 5: for it I think he did some of the other
- 57:30Speaker 5: like artwork on the side for them so it's Star Wars.
- 57:33Speaker 4: Came out, and that came out, and it was the
- 57:34Speaker 4: same company, and, like, they were built, you know, around
- 57:37Speaker 4: the same time.
- 57:38Speaker 5: Because everything from that point on kind of wanted to
- 57:40Speaker 5: be that.
- 57:41Speaker 2: Like, you hit this.
- 57:42Speaker 1: This is, like, the turning point.
- 57:43Speaker 5: Like, everything, again, not necessarily mainstream Hollywood, but everything on
- 57:48Speaker 5: the fringe, like, became... We want to be a cheesy
- 57:50Speaker 5: sci-fi movie or we want to be a sword and
- 57:52Speaker 5: sandal movie. And like, so you get those early days
- 57:55Speaker 5: of VHS that are just nothing but bad medieval sword
- 57:58Speaker 5: movies and like everybody sort of copying these things that
- 58:01Speaker 5: kind of took off. Conan did well. So yeah, that was,
- 58:04Speaker 5: that was, yeah, we have a hundred other knockoffs.
- 58:07Speaker 4: I mean, that was like, that was for that genre.
- 58:09Speaker 4: That was the essential, like, you know, that was the
- 58:12Speaker 4: bar to reach for, you know, they, they raised the bar.
- 58:14Speaker 4: But there was like, you know, Krull and all that,
- 58:15Speaker 4: you know, like Beastmaster, which were like the, you know.
- 58:18Speaker 1: You can't talk bad about Beastmaster now.
- 58:20Speaker 4: You cannot. No, I'm not. I'm not. I love Beastmaster.
- 58:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:23Speaker 5: I know how cheesy it is, but God damn, I.
- 58:25Speaker 2: Love that movie.
- 58:25Speaker 4: It's great.
- 58:26Speaker 2: It's great.
- 58:26Speaker 4: I love it too. But there was like, you know,
- 58:27Speaker 4: there's so many of those movies and like, I mean,
- 58:29Speaker 4: and those were kind of like the higher ups, you know.
- 58:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 58:31Speaker 4: But there's so much bad shit that came out, which
- 58:33Speaker 4: is awesome too. I love all of that.
- 58:34Speaker 5: Well, it is interesting. Yeah, Conan had a real director. Like,
- 58:37Speaker 5: they really, like, it was a studio back.
- 58:39Speaker 4: Yeah, he's really passionate about it.
- 58:40Speaker 5: It was a real, like, it's almost, again, we actually
- 58:43Speaker 5: did an episode on that recently.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Like, it's like an arthouse movie.
- 58:45Speaker 7: Oh, you did? Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 58:46Speaker 5: And, like, it's surprising how non-schlocky popcorn movie it is.
- 58:50Speaker 5: It's weird and arthouse for a good portion of it.
- 58:53Speaker 4: Conan was a perfect time. You know, it was Dungeons
- 58:56Speaker 4: and Dragons.
- 58:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:57Speaker 4: It was the biggest thing, and it was, like, Conan
- 58:59Speaker 4: the Barbarian, like, Boom. There it is. There's a D
- 59:02Speaker 4: & D movie.
- 59:03Speaker 2: There you go.
- 59:03Speaker 5: Yeah, it hit the Schwarzenegger thing right when it was
- 59:07Speaker 5: catching on. So then like fans found it just because
- 59:09Speaker 5: it was Schwarzenegger and it's got people getting their heads
- 59:11Speaker 5: lopped off and blood and gore. So it's like it,
- 59:14Speaker 5: it works, but I'm like, I think it's funny now
- 59:16Speaker 5: looking back at it. Like I feel like a lot
- 59:17Speaker 5: of the people, if they saw it cold.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Would be like, Oh, I don't know. This is kind
- 59:21Speaker 1: of boring.
- 59:22Speaker 5: Like it's, there's long stretches where it's just being weird
- 59:25Speaker 5: and artsy and like.
- 59:26Speaker 4: I appreciate it. Again, you go back to the time
- 59:28Speaker 4: and whatever, nothing, you know, there wasn't anything else.
- 59:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:31Speaker 4: Anything after it didn't exist yet. So, you know, it's like, uh,
- 59:35Speaker 4: you know, like watching old movies, I'm sure you agree.
- 59:36Speaker 4: You gotta, you gotta go by that rule. Just like,
- 59:38Speaker 4: just put yourself in that time.
- 59:40Speaker 5: And sometimes I like them more because it's not feeding.
- 59:43Speaker 5: Like now everything almost seems so postured towards, you know,
- 59:47Speaker 5: whatever it's, whatever it's trying to, not that Hollywood hasn't
- 59:50Speaker 5: always worked on, you know, this is our gimmick.
- 59:51Speaker 1: We want to make money. That's what they would do.
- 59:53Speaker 5: But I feel like now it's so pinpointed as to,
- 59:57Speaker 5: you know, this is our, our special tween comedy romance angle.
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: And we're going to work in this horror crossover.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: Like everything is so pinned down.
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: As to what it's supposed to like appeal to certain
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: audiences and how much money it's going to make back.
- 1:00:10Speaker 5: And like, I feel like coming off of the eighties,
- 1:00:12Speaker 5: they were still kind of winging it and being like, well,
- 1:00:14Speaker 5: we want to make money obviously. But, here you're an
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: artist go make a thing and like now you don't
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: always see that now it's a lot more studio controlling
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: everything that yeah a studio would not make heavy metal
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: the way it is now like.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: Of course of course of course yeah yeah yeah.
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: I'm hoping yeah somewhere down the line somebody put something
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: together and give somebody some freedom to do that i'm.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: Sure they're gonna go for like a third you know
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: i'm sure they're gonna try to do a third i
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: you know uh yeah i won't i don't even want
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: to get into the second one but but um um
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: you know i'm sure if they did did it now
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: um I mean, it's got potential.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Like, there's so much you could do.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: It would be very cool if they went back to
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: the old and been like, hey, we're going to go
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: for like, you know, when the mag started up to
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: like 83 and we're going to pick stories from that era,
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: you know?
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: That'd be cool.
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: I love the Lochner. And you know how they talk
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: about the Lochner, how it's like this way to tie
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: the movie together. It needed to be tied together. And
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: in the documentary, they kind of cut on it a
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: little bit. They're like joking. They're like, oh, we did
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: this silly Lochner. We just need to string it together. Yeah,
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: but I thought, you know, as a kid, I still
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: think like the Lochner was really cool and it was like,
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Kind of something that I thought that, like, you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: this could be a way to tie more movies together.
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: It's like this Loch Nahr, you know?
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: Well, it's, yeah, I mean.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: It seemed like a last-minute thing. Like, it could have
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: been tied together a little bit better, but it's great, and,
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: you know.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: Yeah, did you see the thing about the carousel?
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: The original framing?
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was going to be a carousel,
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: and she got on the carousel, and she would.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: It's still cool, but it definitely does not have that
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: sci-fi fantasy vibe to it. Like, the Loch Nahr definitely is, like, super...
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: especially by the end when they bought it like on
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: the headpiece on a scepter and like, it's so like
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: works its way into all the, all the fantasy stuff.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Yeah. I painted that.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: So the side of my, I have a custom van. Um,
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: and you can see on my website.
- 1:01:49Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: I was 73 Dodge van. You can see it on
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: like my, in my book and on my website and shit. Um, anyways,
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: 73 Dodge van. And I got a wizard on the side.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: It's called Vandalf, but he's got a sphere and the
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: sphere is green, glowing green. So he's actually, that's, I drew,
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: I put the Loch Nahr on my van. So people
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: were like, Hey, he's got that wizard ball. I'm like,
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: that's the Loch Nahr. It's the, And I'm getting my
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: motor rebuilt for my van, and I'm getting the motor
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: painted green, so I'm going to be like, there's the
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: Loch Nahr, dude.
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: Is it going to glow green when you open it?
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Oh, man, I might throw some LEDs on it, just like,
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: not in a cheesy way, but just to kind of like,
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: it's a Loch Nahr, check it out.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Just follow the green glow.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly, exactly. I would have loved to do a
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: heavy metal van, that would have been cool. My friend, artist,
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: Von Franco, he actually painted a custom van in the 70s.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: He's an old school artist, still paints today, but he
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: did one, and he has rad pictures of it, and
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: he did like a heavy metal van, airbrushed the whole thing,
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: and Um, but I, I would love to, you know,
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: do a heavy metal van at some point, you know,
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: probably so dangerous. So, you know, so beautiful, so dangerous. So,
- 1:02:45Speaker 4: so just the ship across the side. I might actually
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: put the ship on the other side of my van.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: I'm thinking about real small, you know, just like, there
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: it is, you know, but I would love to just, yeah,
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: wrap a, like not wrap an airbrush, a whole van.
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: Like, you know, well, I think the thing, I mean, it's,
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: I think the Lagnard works because it's just so creepy
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: next to the girl. Like everything with, especially in those scenes,
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: like it really is creepy.
- 1:03:06Speaker 13: Do not try to escape.
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: You are in my control.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: Look at me. I am the sum of all evils.
- 1:03:21Speaker 13: Look carefully.
- 1:03:24Speaker 8: My power infests all times, all galaxies, all dimensions.
- 1:03:32Speaker 12: But many still seek me out.
- 1:03:36Speaker 6: A green jewel they must possess.
- 1:03:40Speaker 12: But see how I destroy their lives.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: What works so well also is the, cause then I
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: was like, I had to check and see it's Percy
- 1:03:52Speaker 5: Rodriguez is that voice.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: That voice is amazing.
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: Like he was doing like voiceover for like the trailer,
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: And they were just like, no, no, no, no. We
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: need that voice.
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: Like, and I think that ups it quite a bit
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: that I'm just like, if it were just there and
- 1:04:06Speaker 5: green and, you know, just glowing, like without, even if
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: it had another voiceover, like again, they'd pick another silly
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: voice from SCTV probably. So it's like the fact that
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: it's got this weight to it with that voice, you're
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: just like, oh shit that's evil.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: Like that's bringing up another one another cartoon or like
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: animation film that I thought was great when it came
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: out was Transformers the movie it was so dark and
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: they had Orson Welles the real Transformers yeah yeah the
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: real Transformers exactly yeah yeah.
- 1:04:31Speaker 5: When they killed a whole bunch of robots yeah that
- 1:04:33Speaker 5: was rad it totally ruined kids lives.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: I know that was like sort of like I'm like
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: this is dark this is kind of heavy metal-esque you
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: know this is like kind of crazy I still like
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: that movie and watch it sometimes.
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: And Again, it was the 80s. You could make stuff
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: sort of for kids that was horribly inappropriate.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: I look back now and I'm just like, you can't
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: show kids any of these 80s movies.
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: It was a good time to grow up, man. No
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: bicycle helmets. We just drove our BMX bikes.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: I just scared myself.
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: Yeah, man.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: I was covered in scabs and banged my head so
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: many times.
- 1:05:00Speaker 5: Obviously, my bike was the Evel Knievel bike. The one
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: that had the plastic gas tank. Oh, you had the
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: plastic gas tank with the shocks.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: That was my bike. My buddies down the street had
- 1:05:10Speaker 4: them and they were like the older kids and I
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: never had, I had the ET style BMX. But before
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: that was, right before that was the shock, the bike,
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: those bikes, the shock. And I used to, I would
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: drive my buddy Chris's bike and I would just, I
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: would drive it into a curb, flat on. And the
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: shock absorber, you could just like go over a curb.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: I don't even know if those were real shocks. I swear.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: They were.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: They were real shocks. That one had shocks?
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: They had springs on the back, shocks on the front
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: with a fake plastic gas tank. And they had, I
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: think the seat might have had a spring or it
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: was those.
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: It did have a cool, yeah, it had a good
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: size seat. It mostly wasn't one of those dorky little
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: bike seats. Like it was a cool motorcycle seat essentially.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: But yeah, that was me driving off the front of
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: our curb every day.
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: Or into the curb head on.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: Into the curb. Only a few times, you know. On
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: the Loch Nahr, I wanted to see.
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Because I feel like, again, we just sort of touched
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: on the fact that it is the ultimate evil, essentially,
- 1:06:01Speaker 5: by the end. And it's so... I still go back
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: and forth on what I think on the cut scene.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: The Neverwhere Land.
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: Have you watched that whole sequence?
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: Yeah, that was really cool.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: I can't decide... Because that's what they said. It kind
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: of brings the movie to a screeching halt there for...
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: But I'm like, it's not really long. I feel like
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: if you.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: Put in different music.
- 1:06:23Speaker 5: Because there's no spoken word, so it's very silent there.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: That might have been a really good, like, credit roll
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: kind of thing. But the credit roll is really cool
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: because they go through all the.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Scene by scene.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: Scene by scene. Yeah, which is really cool to watch.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: But I feel like that's so.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: They were saying that the movie is already, like, so
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: long they had to cut it out. And it was
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: sort of like it didn't flow, you know? But it
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: was a really cool thing, you know? But it is
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: on the, you know, the Blu-ray DVD and, like, on
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: the extras and stuff, which is really cool.
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: And it's one of those, but that totally shows, like, how, like,
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: evil it really... Like, it is, like, the ultimate evil
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: of the universe, so much so, like, in that story,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: it goes into a brand new planet and just continues
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: to build on evil and evil. And each thing that
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: comes up, it becomes, like, part of the evil that...
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: every generation like it takes over as like the ultimate
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: evil and worms its way into these horrible characters that
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: come up and eventually we'll probably destroy the planet so
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: yeah it's yeah i thought that was kind of cool
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: because i think you don't really know what to think
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: of it otherwise it's just like this thing keeps showing
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: up and it's it's not good but we don't really
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: just like at the beginning you're like is it just
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: radioactive like what the hell is it so it's like
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: it doesn't quite pin down how much it really is
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: the ultimate evil without that scene and It's just kind
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: of like, stay away from that thing, basically.
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: Totally, totally.
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: And we're thinking that when people find it in the movie,
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: you're like, don't touch it.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Don't touch it.
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: And they always touch it.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Later, it's okay to touch it.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: So it's like, it changes its own rules. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:54Speaker 4: The rules change in different worlds, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. Very interesting.
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: And I don't want to overthink it, you know, but
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: we are, but it's cool.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: Like, I don't know.
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: Crazy, crazy.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Well, let's see.
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: So the very 80s moments, I thought, though, the fact
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: that it's got to be the 80s because there's Coke references.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Massive Coke references.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: And then the other one I thought was, again, it
- 1:08:16Speaker 5: being kind of ahead of its time, watching that car
- 1:08:19Speaker 5: and the guy, the astronaut in the car was like,
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: it feels so much like the MTV, like the cutaway
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: scenes with the astronaut guy and the weird choppy animation
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: that I'm like, That's before that happened. MTV had just launched,
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: I think, that same summer. So again, MTV kind of
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: like what would then become the thing for all pop
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: culture for the next 10, 15 years is still kind
- 1:08:44Speaker 5: of taking a note from this movie. So I feel
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: like everybody kind of looked at this thing and sort
- 1:08:49Speaker 5: of took what they needed from it.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: Yeah, they broke a lot of ground. There's so much
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: going on. you know it's like uh totally i.
- 1:08:56Speaker 5: Think the the end like i think it has that
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: moment and it's and it's in the uh it's in
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: the den when is the moment that i think once
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: again is maybe the most specific to the fan base
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: of geeks because by the end he's just like I'm
- 1:09:10Speaker 5: staying here in my fantasy world.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Yeah, he drops the lockdown, which is awesome. He's like,
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: I don't need that.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: It goes back to Earth. I'm staying here.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. On Earth, I'm nobody, but here, I'm dead.
- 1:09:21Speaker 5: It is, once again, that message that I think parents
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: were so worried about back then, because it's like, my
- 1:09:25Speaker 5: life in fantasy, and it's better than my real life. So, like,
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: kids getting lost in D & D, like... I think
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: it is kind of.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: That moment of, like, yeah, real world sucks.
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: I'm staying in fantasy world.
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:36Speaker 5: And, like, again, jumping ahead to, like, people playing World
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: of Warcraft. Like, it's kind of that same thing. Like,
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: my real life sucks, but World of Warcraft is great.
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: So we see it kind of, like, already sort of
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: planting the seed for those things we're going to find anyway.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: So, again, geeks, we take wherever we can get it.
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: We'll take respect wherever we can get it, even when
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: it's not real.
- 1:09:57Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:09:58Speaker 4: Hey, man, shout out to Monty Hellman if he's listening,
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: if he listens to that. And you had him on,
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: I mean, Tulane Blacktop's my other favorite movie.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 1:10:05Speaker 4: I think he's done that movie for years. And not
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: to jump over to a different subject real quick, but
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: when I was working for Metallica, Bob Rock was the
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: producer and Bob's from Canada. And we bonded right away
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: because we're both Canadian and hung out a bunch. And
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: Bob and James, or James Hetfield, Bob Rock, James Hetfield
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: were both. super super geeked on two lane blacktop yeah
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: and the three of us would just we'd talk about
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: it and bob was getting a little 55 he had
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: a 55 chevy that he bought and it was all
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: like painted pretty like red and white and he bought
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: it and he's like he's like i'm i'm i'm tearing
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: this fucking paint off and i'm doing i'm gonna make
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: a replica of i haven't seen it but i saw
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: that his motor around the corner in maran uh getting
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: blueprinted and seraphel getting blueprinted we went over we talked
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: to the engine guy and And he was trying to
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: come up with the, you know, the bread box for
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: the blower.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: The cowl induction that they have in the movie. And
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: he was trying to, like, he was like, does this
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: look correct? And he had, like, a cardboard, you know,
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: and me and James were looking at it. We're like,
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: that looks about the size. You know, but we couldn't
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: tell how to, what exact size it was. I'm sure
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: someone's done it now, but this is, like, 2002 or 2003. So,
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: you know, everyone just had email. And it was like,
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: you know, like, you have the internet and email?
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you know.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: But, yeah, he was making that and putting it on
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: the car. So, Bob's got this crazy, like, I think
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: it's a nitrous car, but, um, um, and I, like
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: I said, I only saw it when it was getting built.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: I haven't seen it since. And I haven't, I hadn't
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: talked to Bob for years and I recently reconnected with him. Um,
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: but I haven't talked about his car and seen what
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: he's up to with the car. But, uh, Monty Hellman, man,
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: Bob rocks, uh, you know, he's, he's, he's, he's built one.
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Monty was like so cool. Like I was, I was,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: I didn't know what to expect going in. Cause again, he's,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: he'd worked in all different types of like, he did like.
- 1:11:44Speaker 5: You know, schlocky B movies and then he does like
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: kind of artsy movies and like, he's just super laid
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: back and cool.
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: He's definitely one of my hero directors, you know, and
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: if you're listening, man, right on dude, you know.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: He's very cool.
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. I think like Warren Oates is like my
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: favorite actor. You know, I want to get a painting
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: of like Warren Oates just like, you know, with the,
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia, like just like.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: From here, if you didn't know.
- 1:12:05Speaker 4: Is he?
- 1:12:05Speaker 7: Warren Oates.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: He was Kentucky born, yeah.
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: Oh, he's, I do know that.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: We want to.
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: He's not from Louisville.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: I don't know if it's Louisville exactly, but he's somewhere
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: in Kentucky.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, he's Kentucky born. That's right. I'm reading his book
- 1:12:16Speaker 4: right now.
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: Because we have, one of our co-hosts does the Harry
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: Dean Stanton Fest.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: He's from Kentucky, so she's always like, you.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Really need to do a Warren Oates dress.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: And I'm like, whatever.
- 1:12:27Speaker 5: If we can put it together.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: Harry Dean's out there. He's listening. Harry Dean, what's up?
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: He's hanging in there. Another cool old dude.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: He's awesome.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: Have you guys done Tulane Blacktop?
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: No, not in its entirety. We just talked to him
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: about it briefly, but if we can pin it down.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: Be a good one. there's a lot of good ones
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: there's a lot of good ones I think you're gonna
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: have a podcast for a long time that's.
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: Why yeah that's why I like you know it makes
- 1:12:49Speaker 5: it a little harder when I'm like okay pick a
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: movie but one we haven't done before because then everybody
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: wants to go to the same ones but I'm like
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: man if you branch out there's so many awesome movies
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: that like we haven't addressed yet what are the same
- 1:12:59Speaker 5: ones that people want to go to I mean somebody
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: immediately like knee jerk was like I want to talk
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: about Jaws and I'm like okay, but once again, it
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: was kind of like the Blade Runner thing. It was like,
- 1:13:06Speaker 5: Jaws is huge. Like, can we wrap around everything that
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Jaws encompasses?
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: Oh, dude, I got a Jaws guy, Chris the Bodyguard.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: He's like got the biggest Jaws collection in the world.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: I don't know if you know him, but I can
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: hook you up with him and he would, if you
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: did a Jaws one, like Chris is a guy to
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: talk to and he's friends with Kirk Hammett. That's how
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: I met. I met Chris through Kirk and he's like
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: a giant like movie prop collector and he has some
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: stuff to do with like horror fests, but he's got
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: the biggest Jaws collection in the world and he's got
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: the buoys and like all kinds of shit, but He'd
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: be the guy to talk to about Jaws.
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: Well, we've also had the guy who built the shark.
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: We talked with him.
- 1:13:40Speaker 7: Oh, really?
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: Oh, so you guys have done Jaws together.
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: I mean, it's just different, yeah, different people.
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: But, like, he had such amazing stories because, like, he
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: ended up being the director of the third one. And, like,
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: I'm like, I don't hate the third one. The second
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: one's got problems. But, like, the third one's just weird
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: and does its own thing. But, like, he was on set. Like,
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: he was helping build the shark. He was on set,
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: you know, when Spielberg was still, like, kind of a
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: kid like you know still kind of figured out what
- 1:14:04Speaker 5: he was doing so it's like it is kind of
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: cool just sort of hearing these stories on it so
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: yeah to me it's always so hard when people pick
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: huge iconic movies but i'm like yeah pick some weird
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: one that nobody's done before so that's that's what i
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: like when people just sort of go some weird left
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: turn that i didn't see coming so there's plenty of
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: movies out.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: There heavy metal heavy metal.
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: That's the way to go which in its own right
- 1:14:26Speaker 5: is super influential so So we'll wrap up here with,
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: much like on the end of the movie, once again
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: doing a really weird thing. Because I watched it and
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: I went, that house that just blew up, that was
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: a real house.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: They built a tiny Victorian house.
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: They blew up a dollhouse, right? And blew it up.
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: Because I'm like, those are real pieces flying. Like, that's
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: not animation.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Like, that was a real house.
- 1:14:48Speaker 9: They just blew up.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: So once again, blowing shit up. That's how you know
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: it's a cool movie. They're blowing shit up.
- 1:14:53Speaker 7: Yep.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: So that's the end of the movie.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: She flies off.
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: Go fight evil somewhere else, as we're now going to do.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: So where do you fight.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Evil in the world? Tell people more.
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: Where they can find you and what all you're up
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: to in the world.
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: Right now, I live in San Francisco, California, from Ottawa, Canada.
- 1:15:13Speaker 4: I've lived in Montreal for a bunch of years. My
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: studio is basically from home, San Francisco. I work on cars,
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: all that stuff. Right now, I just finished the Aerosmith
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: pinball machine I finished last year, and it's just coming
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: out now. I've done art for a bunch of pinball machines.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: for Stern and my next jobs are I got a
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: couple of kind of like small things I'm working on
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: like personal projects and I'm going to do a little
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: bit of art for Thrasher Magazine and and uh tony
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: vitello uh the owner of thrasher um sent me an
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: email actually like about a month ago and he's like
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: hey uh this is tony from thrasher and uh i
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: live around the corner from you because i see your
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: van all the time so that one with the wizard
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: right yeah i was like that's fucking cool so he
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: came i'm like well when you're done work why don't
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: you like you know when you're off like come on
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: over and we'll hang out and so he he stopped
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: by my house a few weeks ago and we talked
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: so i'm gonna do some art for thrasher which is
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: awesome you know skateboarding and uh you know he's a
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: local guy at school i'm like damn we haven't met
- 1:16:09Speaker 4: like it's crazy we haven't met like i know some
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: of the uh ed riggins uh one of the partners
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: in thrasher retired recently and but tony's the he's he's
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: you know he's the main one of the main main
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: main guys over there so um that's that's i'm excited
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: about that project it's super cool and i got a
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: bunch of bunch of projects on the go i i'm
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: totally having a brain fart but that's one of them
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: and Booked out for the next year or so, but DirtyDonnie.com
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: is my website. Got a book, Pinball Wizards, Blacklight Destroyers.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Book's brand new. You can get it on Amazon. Got
- 1:16:36Speaker 4: a new coloring book and my website. Always got new
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: stuff going on, but thanks for having me on your podcast, man.
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: Thanks for being on the show, man. We had a
- 1:16:45Speaker 4: lot of interruptions. It was kind of funny. We had
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: to move like three times.
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: We relocated.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Fought off drunk dudes.
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: It was like, yeah, and it's not late. It's like.
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: Middle of the day drunk dudes.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. It's like four in the afternoon. That puts
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: it in perspective. Yeah, this is a big convention. There's
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: a lot of games here. And there's like, yeah, there's
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: drunk people wandering around. So we found a fucking corner.
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: I've been to a lot of conventions. I am not surprised.
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: That's usually how these go.
- 1:17:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: But yeah, otherwise, thanks for being on, man.
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: And otherwise, that about does it.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: We will turn next time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:17:50Speaker 15: Let's cruise a while, leave the trouble far behind. You
- 1:17:56Speaker 15: can hedge your bet on a clean corvette.
- 1:18:01Speaker 8: To keep you here a long time. Now if you're
- 1:18:05Speaker 8: ready to dive into overdrive, baby, we might be wrong.
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: It's like you're running away on some high-octane. Every time
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: you need to fall apart. Don't you take a ride, ride, ride,
- 1:18:25Speaker 8: ride on heavy metal. It's the only way that you
- 1:18:33Speaker 8: can drown. Bye. Bye. Bye. It's fight, fight, fight, fight
- 1:18:44Speaker 8: on heavy metal. Baby, won't you ride, ride into it?
- 1:19:11Speaker 8: You know, you just can't lose the.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Way she moves.
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: It's not a big surprise to feel your temperature rise.
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: You've got a picture of life for you.
- 1:19:34Speaker 15: Cause there is too much of you that there's no
- 1:19:38Speaker 15: one for sure. You just become.
- 1:19:41Speaker 8: A heavy load of the reader. Won't you take a ride.
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: Ride, ride, ride.
- 1:19:50Speaker 8: On heaven's end. It's the only way that you can travel. Satisfied, right, right,
- 1:20:03Speaker 8: right On heaven and soul Baby, won't you ride Ride
- 1:20:13Speaker 8: until it's blue.
- 1:21:35Speaker 5: So, as I mentioned at the top of the episode there,
- 1:21:38Speaker 5: we had a lot working against us this week, most
- 1:21:40Speaker 5: of which were loud, drunk people. So here, if you'd
- 1:21:44Speaker 5: like to stick around for a few extra minutes, it's
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: just a sample of the type of, well, as this
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: person eventually put it himself, dickheads we had to endure
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: in trying to put this episode together. Plus, Donnie thought
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: it was kind of funny that we had captured these
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: precious moments. Now keep in mind, Donnie is also recording
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: video of all these events on his GoPro for some
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: video segments that he's putting together on his site. So
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: if you're into that sort of thing, enjoy this. I
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: tolerated this guy as best I could. Oh, and by
- 1:22:13Speaker 5: the way, in case you were wondering after the fact, yes,
- 1:22:16Speaker 5: his friend's shoes eventually ended up about 10 feet in
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: the air next to an AC unit. Yep, it was
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: one of those weekends. So, for better or worse, here
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: you go.
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: So, yeah, it all kind of stems from that, you know.
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: And I started doing art full-time. Should we do a pause?
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: I guess so.
- 1:22:40Speaker 5: Until the yipping goes by.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: Uh-oh, there's some trouble.
- 1:22:46Speaker 5: There's always some characters, Lord.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: That room has got a... So we're in the... What
- 1:22:52Speaker 4: is this? It's like the pool area of the luxurious
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: Ramada Inn. Four floors of glory. And one of the
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: dudes has got a room full of fucking pinball. He
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: took all the furniture out of his room and it's
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: all pinball machines in there.
- 1:23:07Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: It's a fucking arcade and that's where he partied last night.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: It's pretty funny.
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: So is he still sleeping there? Just on the floor
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: curled up next to the pinball machine?
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: That guy got wasted.
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: That guy was wasted at like four.
- 1:23:15Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: What's happening?
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Oh, there they are.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: These are the guys from last night. You're going to
- 1:23:23Speaker 4: break my hand, man.
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: I'm a pussy, dude.
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: Hey, man, Corey Hart, dude.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: We'll see you inside.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Can't go anywhere.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: A lot of cutting out.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: I would have said we get that a lot.
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: We were in that room, and then we came outside,
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: and those are the guys that were sitting right here, wasted.
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: I mean, they're kind of wasted still. I don't think
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: they stopped.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure this is not a new session. It's
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: carried over to the next day.
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: Yeah, you'll have a little bit of editing to do. No, no,
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: I've been up early, man.
- 1:24:03Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: I'm on California time still.
- 1:24:06Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: We'll see you inside.
- 1:24:08Speaker 8: Whoa!
- 1:24:12Speaker 9: This is going to sound weird, but what do we
- 1:24:14Speaker 9: got going on here? Recording.
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: We're doing a little video. We're doing a podcast on movies.
- 1:24:27Speaker 9: Ooh, what movie?
- 1:24:28Speaker 4: Heavy Metal.
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: Heavy Metal.
- 1:24:30Speaker 9: What other movie?
- 1:24:31Speaker 4: Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal.
- 1:24:34Speaker 9: Man, I feel real bad about interrupting this. But I
- 1:24:37Speaker 9: came with that whole group, so.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 1:24:41Speaker 9: What's Heavy Metal about?
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: It's a cartoon.
- 1:24:43Speaker 9: Did I miss the whole thing?
- 1:24:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like the best cartoon.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Definitely have to see it.
- 1:24:49Speaker 9: That's built into another movie, right? I don't think so.
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: It's an iconic... No, no, no. This is like 1981.
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: It's like an animation film. It's like a crazy rad.
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: You gotta see it. Go watch it.
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: It's good.
- 1:25:02Speaker 4: It's John Candy and a bunch of people.
- 1:25:05Speaker 9: Shut up. It's John Candy?
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: He's in there, yeah.
- 1:25:08Speaker 9: I thought I saw a John Candy movie. What character
- 1:25:11Speaker 9: did he play?
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: He played a bunch of them.
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: We just talked about that, actually. Yeah, he did voiceovers
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: for characters.
- 1:25:16Speaker 9: So what you're saying is I want to sit down
- 1:25:18Speaker 9: and talk about all the stuff you guys already talked about?
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:25:21Speaker 9: Man, I'm a dickhead. At least all my other friends
- 1:25:24Speaker 9: just walk by.
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: It's kind of awesome, though, you know, because it's like
- 1:25:27Speaker 4: we're doing this kind of live and we've moved twice.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: We're on the fly. Every time I sit down, an
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: asshole's here.
- 1:25:33Speaker 9: Hey, don't worry, because I'm going to sit down and
- 1:25:37Speaker 9: try to record.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: I don't even know. Be the asshole. Hey.
- 1:25:42Speaker 9: Be the asshole who interrupts me.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: Well, he's the guy that's got to edit it, so
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: I'm just like.
- 1:25:46Speaker 9: Oh, let us talk, because... Did you see that guy
- 1:25:49Speaker 9: passed out over there on the lounge chair?
- 1:25:51Speaker 7: No, but.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: You didn't? No. Oh, I have his shoes.
- 1:25:53Speaker 7: Oh, you did?
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: You should throw them in the pool.
- 1:25:55Speaker 9: I'm with him.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: Yeah, uh-oh.
- 1:25:57Speaker 9: We record together. He's the asshole that has to edit, so... Yeah.
- 1:26:01Speaker 9: I'll take his life miserable.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: You guys do the podcast?
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: Right on. You should bring your podcast over and.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: Hey, Dave!
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Dave!
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: When we're done, we should do part two. Oh, sorry. No, no.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: After we're done. Don't worry, Dave.
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: You know what?
- 1:26:21Speaker 9: I do the same thing in our podcast.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: What about Phil?
- 1:26:24Speaker 9: Phil!
- 1:26:25Speaker 2: Phil! Oh, man.
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: I've got to fucking get this.
- 1:26:29Speaker 5: Birthday by Phil!
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: Too much.
- 1:26:35Speaker 9: How hard would it be just to grab everything and
- 1:26:37Speaker 9: walk into that room? Would it be hard?
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: It would not go well.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: Why?
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: Fuck it.
- 1:26:42Speaker 9: Are you guys not safe for work? Oh, never.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: No.
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: Never you're not safe for work or you're never safe
- 1:26:51Speaker 9: for work?
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: Both.
- 1:26:53Speaker 9: Then I apologize for all the swear words.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: Dirty Donnie.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: What's up?
- 1:26:58Speaker 5: Dirty Donnie?
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: Dirty Donnie.
- 1:27:00Speaker 9: You have hand sanitizer? My friend just passed out over there.
- 1:27:05Speaker 9: We're in this courtyard. We're trying to own it.
- 1:27:10Speaker 2: I think you are.
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: I think it belongs to you. I think you should
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: tie those shoes together and.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: You should throw them over.
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: So he's got to go find them.
- 1:27:17Speaker 9: You know what? They're not my shoes. Fuck it. Where
- 1:27:19Speaker 9: do you want them?
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: Fuck those shoes.
- 1:27:21Speaker 9: I'll tie them together. Put the video right here.
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: I'll tie them together.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Fuck this.
- 1:27:26Speaker 9: Hell yeah.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: What the fuck?
- 1:27:29Speaker 9: Is that going to be on help?
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: We'll take it to the room after. We'll come back
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: out for.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Some more action.
- 1:27:34Speaker 9: Yeah, now I'm really nervous. Close the door. I don't
- 1:27:37Speaker 9: want to be a part of this. Alright, where do
- 1:27:41Speaker 9: you want them?
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: How about right up there?
- 1:27:43Speaker 9: Fuck you, Sean. I'm throwing your shoes over to the balcony.
- 1:27:46Speaker 3: What do.
- 1:27:51Speaker 9: You got? Come on, man. You got it.
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: A little more mustard.
- 1:27:57Speaker 8: Almost.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: Almost had it.
- 1:28:11Speaker 9: Alright, one more trap.
- 1:28:13Speaker 15: Alright, three more traps.
- 1:28:15Speaker 5: How do you want to trap?
- 1:28:17Speaker 9: You gotta chuck them like a set of nunchucks.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: Don't do that, because then.
- 1:28:22Speaker 9: I'm going to start dancing with them.
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: Don't do that. Give me those fucking shoes.
- 1:28:31Speaker 9: Don't do that.
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: Give me those fucking shoes.
- 1:28:45Speaker 8: It's not so great for your podcast.
