- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here, it is Wednesday, it
- 0:15is the first of May. I literally just had to check
- 0:20a calendar to make sure there wasn't 31 days in
- 0:24that previous month of ours, April. But
- 0:26no, there is not. It is the first of May, it
- 0:29is May Day, which, oh May Day, quite a check in
- 0:32history. May Day used to be a very
- 0:35pagan festival where they would do lots of
- 0:37celebrations to enhance the fertility of people and
- 0:41animals. And apparently if you wash your
- 0:44face with the dew found on the ground this morning you
- 0:47will have beautiful skin. So
- 0:49good luck with that, but these days it's much less
- 0:51about fertility and much more about labour movement
- 0:54and protection of workers, which that's probably a
- 0:57very good thing, making sure that we don't abuse
- 0:59workers. And the Soviet Union many years
- 1:01ago decided this day would be celebrated and bring
- 1:05capitalism down. That didn't go so well, but
- 1:09labour laws protecting workers, they certainly are
- 1:12a very good thing. But all that aside, this is
- 1:15the day that we will not be celebrating fertility or
- 1:19labour movements, but no, this is the day, the
- 1:22finally, that it all catches up with Absalom.
- 1:25After his daring plan to steal
- 1:27the throne from his father, poke his tongue out at the
- 1:31institution and claim it as his own. It
- 1:34all comes apart today. So let us read it together,
- 1:38friends. Let's read together. Second
- 1:39Samuel chapter 18. David
- 1:52now mustered the men who were with him and appointed
- 1:54generals and captains to lead them. He
- 1:57sent the troops out in three groups, placing one
- 2:00group under Joab, one under Joab's brother Abishai, son
- 2:04of Zeruaya, and one under Itai, the man from Gath.
- 2:08The king told his troops, I am
- 2:11going out with you. But his men objected strongly.
- 2:14You must not go, they urged.
- 2:16If we have to turn and run,
- 2:18and even if half of us die, it will make no
- 2:21difference to Absalom's troops. He
- 2:23will be looking only for you. You
- 2:25are worth 10 ,000 of us, and it is better that you
- 2:29stay here in the town and send help if we need it.
- 2:33If you think that's the best
- 2:34plan, I'll do it, the king answered. So
- 2:38we stood alongside the gates of the town as all
- 2:40the troops marched out in groups of hundreds and of
- 2:43thousands. And the king gave this command
- 2:47to Joab, Abishai and Itai, for my sake, deal gently
- 2:52with young Absalom. And all the troops heard the
- 2:55king give this order to his commanders. So
- 2:58the battle began in the forests of Ephraim, and the
- 3:01Israelite troops were beaten back by David's men. There
- 3:05was a great slaughter that day, and 20 ,000 men laid
- 3:09down their lives. The battle raged all across the
- 3:12countryside, and more men died because of the forest
- 3:15than were killed by the sword. During
- 3:18the battle, Absalom happened to come across some of
- 3:21David's men. He tried to escape on his
- 3:24mule, but as he rode beneath the thick branches
- 3:26of a great tree, his hair got caught in the tree.
- 3:30His mule kept going and left
- 3:31him dangling in the air. One
- 3:34of David's men saw what had happened and told Joab,
- 3:37I saw Absalom dangling from a great tree. What,
- 3:41Joab demanded, you saw him there and didn't kill him?
- 3:45I would have rewarded you
- 3:46with ten pieces of silver and a hero's belt. I
- 3:50would not kill the king's son for even a thousand
- 3:53pieces of silver, the men replied to Joab. We
- 3:56all heard the king say to you and Abishai and Itai,
- 3:59for my sake, please, bear young Absalom. And
- 4:03if I had betrayed the king by killing his son, and
- 4:06the king would certainly find out who did it, you
- 4:08yourself would be the first to abandon me. Enough
- 4:12of this nonsense, Joab said. Then
- 4:15he took three daggers and plunged them into Absalom's
- 4:19heart as he dangled, still alive in the great tree.
- 4:23Ten of Joab's young armor
- 4:24-bearers then surrounded Absalom and killed him.
- 4:28Then Joab blew the ram's horn,
- 4:31and his men returned from chasing the army of Israel.
- 4:34They threw Absalom's body into a
- 4:36deep pit in the forest and piled a great heap of
- 4:40stones over it, and all Israel fled to their homes.
- 4:45During his lifetime, Absalom had
- 4:48built a monument to himself in the king's valley, for
- 4:51he said, I have no son to carry on my name. He
- 4:55named the monument after himself, and it is known
- 4:58as Absalom's monument to this day. Then
- 5:03Zadok's son Ahimaz said, Let me run to the king
- 5:06with the good news that the Lord has rescued him
- 5:09from his enemies. No, Joab told him, It wouldn't
- 5:13be good news to the king that his son is dead. You
- 5:16can be my messenger another time, but not today. Then
- 5:19Joab said to a man from Ethiopia, Go and tell the
- 5:23king what you have seen. The
- 5:25man bowed and ran off. But Ahimaz continued to plead
- 5:29with Joab. Whatever happens, please let me go
- 5:33too. Why should you go my son? Joab
- 5:36replied, There will be no reward for your news. Yes,
- 5:40but let me go anyway, he begged. Joab
- 5:44finally said, All right, go ahead. So
- 5:48Ahimaz took the less demanding route by way of
- 5:51the plane, and ran to Mahaname ahead of the
- 5:54Ethiopian. While David was sitting between
- 5:57the inner and outer gates of the town, the watchman
- 6:00climbed to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As
- 6:03he looked, he saw a lone man running toward them. He
- 6:07shouted the news down to David, and the king
- 6:09replied, If he is alone, he has news. As
- 6:13the messenger came closer, the watchman saw another
- 6:16man running toward them. He shouted down, Here comes
- 6:19another one. The king replied, He also will
- 6:23have news. The first man runs like Ahimaz,
- 6:27son of Zadok, the watchman said. He
- 6:30is a good man and comes with good news, the king
- 6:32replied. Then Ahimaz cried out to the
- 6:35king, Everything is all right. He
- 6:38bowed before the king with his face to the ground and
- 6:41said, Praise to the Lord your God who has handed
- 6:44over the rebels, who dared to stand against my Lord
- 6:47the king. What about young Absalom? the
- 6:50king demanded. Is he all right? Ahimaz
- 6:54replied, When Joab told me to come, there was a lot
- 6:57of commotion, but I didn't know what was happening.
- 7:00Wait here, the king told him.
- 7:03So Ahimaz stepped aside. Then
- 7:05the man from Ethiopia arrived and said, I have
- 7:08good news for my Lord the king. Today
- 7:11the Lord has rescued you from all those who rebelled
- 7:14against you. What about young Absalom? the
- 7:17king demanded. Is he all right? And
- 7:20the Ethiopian replied, May all of your enemies, my
- 7:24Lord the king, both now and in the future, share
- 7:26the fate of that young man. The
- 7:29king was overcome with emotion. He
- 7:33went up to the room over the gateway and burst into
- 7:36tears. And as he went, he cried, Oh
- 7:39my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom, if only I had
- 7:45died instead of you. Oh Absalom, my son, my son.
- 8:00Oh Lord, let our hearts be
- 8:02like that of David. He loves and he forgives and
- 8:08he holds close, even those that everyone else believe
- 8:11he should despise. And Lord, that's like you. He
- 8:15certainly is a king after your own heart. Because
- 8:19you love and you draw close and you forgive even
- 8:24those who were so hard to get along with. Oh
- 8:28Lord, soften our hearts. Fill
- 8:30us with your grace. So that those people in our
- 8:35lives who we find it so hard to love, people who
- 8:39test our patience and push our buttons. Lord,
- 8:43I pray that you would soften us and fill our
- 8:47hearts with your love for them. So
- 8:50that through us they can have a taste of your great
- 8:53love for them. You are a good, good and
- 8:57loving God. And we pray that over time you
- 9:02would mold us and shape us to be more like you, more
- 9:06like Jesus who loved us so much that he gave up
- 9:10everything for us. And so it's in his name that
- 9:14we pray all these things. Amen.
