- 1:47Speaker 3: there any of you guys out there, it's you know,
- 1:52Speaker 3: back then in nineteen eighty four, watched it in a theater?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Or did you have to wait a little bit like me?
- 2:01Speaker 3: You know, the nearest theater was send five miles away.
- 2:04Speaker 3: So you know, if I'm the only one who wants
- 2:08Speaker 3: to watch it, and you know no one else wants
- 2:13Speaker 3: to watch it, that's sort of out of luck. But
- 2:16Speaker 3: I didn't really get to see it in theater. But
- 2:20Speaker 3: I got introduced by a friend of a friend of
- 2:23Speaker 3: mine that growing up, we always go over to her
- 2:26Speaker 3: house and you know, a bunch of us will you know,
- 2:30Speaker 3: either play in a pool or you know, play games
- 2:34Speaker 3: or whatever. And and uh, she's like, well, you know what,
- 2:39Speaker 3: let's watch movies. I got a good movie to watch
- 2:42Speaker 3: and happens to be Ghostbusters. And back then before DVDs,
- 2:47Speaker 3: if you're as old as I am, and you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: the young guys are like, well, what's a VHS. Well,
- 2:55Speaker 3: back in the day, movies came out of vhs. They
- 2:59Speaker 3: didn't come in on DVDs as they do now. Were
- 3:02Speaker 3: now Blu Ray, but they came out of, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 3: a DHS cassette. It was basically a big, old large
- 3:11Speaker 3: cassette tape and you put plug it in a VCR
- 3:16Speaker 3: and and uh that's how we watched it. And I
- 3:21Speaker 3: got I think I got the back when I watched
- 3:24Speaker 3: it because it was it was a cool movie. I mean,
- 3:26Speaker 3: I love, you know, the paranormal and even though I'm
- 3:31Speaker 3: sensitive as well and had my own ghost stories and
- 3:36Speaker 3: and uh, it was really awesome. And in fact this uh,
- 3:42Speaker 3: during the Ghostbusters week, I ended up watching the first
- 3:46Speaker 3: one and I got to watch us an Empire, so
- 3:51Speaker 3: that was awesome. And I hope you guys get to
- 3:56Speaker 3: watch any of the Ghostbusters films and and enjoy the
- 4:01Speaker 3: phenomena that you know started this craze and happy to
- 4:06Speaker 3: be part of it. So today's episode was brought to
- 4:14Speaker 3: you by I was submitted by a longtime viewer. She
- 4:24Speaker 3: emailed me and and uh requested this story and I
- 4:31Speaker 3: looked into it and it's pretty awesome. So our viewer
- 4:41Speaker 3: today that brought this story today, her name is Kelly.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So I hope I give this story justice and thank
- 4:52Speaker 3: you for smanning this wonderful story to me Kelly, and
- 4:56Speaker 3: I hope you enjoy it. And mhm, so let's sit back, relax,
- 5:05Speaker 3: cut out with your loved ones or cut on that
- 5:08Speaker 3: one full armchair as it's time for yeah, as our
- 5:18Speaker 3: story begins, and do what you know as we uh
- 5:30Speaker 3: we're young and either in elementary school or even take now,
- 5:37Speaker 3: take our kids to the park and into the playground.
- 5:40Speaker 3: I mean you know they peaceful, uh park and start
- 5:46Speaker 3: hearing uh. You know the kids play in the park
- 5:52Speaker 3: a song, playing tag and you know it, I don't
- 6:03Speaker 3: think nothing of it. You know it's going for place.
- 6:06Speaker 3: And but this place is a very unique place. Today's
- 6:21Speaker 3: story is called the legend the Alabama's Dead Children's Playground.
- 6:33Speaker 3: You know they they called the Dead Children's Playgrounds. Actually
- 6:39Speaker 3: known as Maple Hill Park. It's in Huntsville, Alabama. And
- 6:47Speaker 3: what unique portion of this unique playground since the historic
- 6:55Speaker 3: Maple Hills Cemetery. That's Jason to his playground. I mean
- 7:02Speaker 3: it looks like any other playground featuress featuring modern swing sets,
- 7:09Speaker 3: dungle jams, you know anything that monkey bars, et cetera.
- 7:17Speaker 3: You know, normal playground. But this playground is unlike any others.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Passersby often say they could see the swings moving on
- 7:28Speaker 3: their own on accord, as well as orbs and spectral figures.
- 7:37Speaker 3: The playground is surrounded on three sides by limestone that
- 7:41Speaker 3: form by many caves in the area, giving in a
- 7:48Speaker 3: shallow appearance as leads itself to a spooky legends Approximately
- 7:54Speaker 3: to the historic cemetery, it doesn't hurt either. Local teens
- 8:01Speaker 3: called it the Dead Children's Playground, a mark a mcvray
- 8:10Speaker 3: name for a place still used by family. So how
- 8:17Speaker 3: did the innocent place get its schoos name? According to legend,
- 8:22Speaker 3: many children who died in Huntsville during the nineteen eighteen
- 8:28Speaker 3: Spanish flute pandemic were buried in the maple heel plots
- 8:34Speaker 3: adjoining to the playground. The spirits of those children, some say,
- 8:40Speaker 3: came out after dark to run and play, as they
- 8:44Speaker 3: might might have had have done in real life. Online
- 8:50Speaker 3: search turns up photos of unexplained shadows and orbs. It
- 8:58Speaker 3: is true many children and as well as adults died
- 9:03Speaker 3: during the worldwide pandemic that killed estimate of five fifty
- 9:08Speaker 3: million people worldwide and hit Huntsville, Alabama, particularly hard. The
- 9:15Speaker 3: hospital beds were filled, the doctors were working long shifts
- 9:20Speaker 3: and in hopes of seizing some of the patients are
- 9:25Speaker 3: easing some of the patient's misery. Many patients were treated
- 9:32Speaker 3: at home with large quarantine signs on the doors, the
- 9:37Speaker 3: practice which resulted in the disease spreading through the entire families.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Fiys were often stacked on wagons and hard by moors
- 9:49Speaker 3: by horses to try to prevent the spread of the disease.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Children continued are contained to leave the window or cushion,
- 10:03Speaker 3: children to leave their windows, windows closed. They even said
- 10:08Speaker 3: a song and Ryan, that was a remark. That was
- 10:12Speaker 3: a reminder. It goes this quote. I had a bird.
- 10:19Speaker 3: His name was Inza. I opened the door and in
- 10:24Speaker 3: flew Inza. According to Alabama Department of Public Health, the
- 10:32Speaker 3: deadly flu arrived in Alabama by a way of Huntsville
- 10:37Speaker 3: on September twenty fifth, nineteen eighteen. Within ten days, it
- 10:43Speaker 3: had spread the general population. The Alabama DHP quoted on
- 10:49Speaker 3: October fifth, Arthur from bringing Him News reported cases of
- 10:55Speaker 3: Spanish influenza have increased to more than one thousand, one
- 11:02Speaker 3: hundred in Huntsville. According to doctor ca Through Health Officer
- 11:10Speaker 3: of Medicon County. There have been an additional three hundred
- 11:14Speaker 3: cases and seven deaths for the past twenty four hours.
- 11:20Speaker 3: On October seventh, the Governor of Alabama or to the
- 11:24Speaker 3: closure of the public places statewide and clean stores, schools, churches.
- 11:32Speaker 3: This kind of sounds a little familiar, doing it almost
- 11:35Speaker 3: like COVID was. I guess we haven't learned our lesson.
- 11:43Speaker 3: By October thirteenth, the Briham News was reported that only
- 11:49Speaker 3: one local pharmacists and one local doctor remained unaffected. A
- 11:55Speaker 3: desperate situation exists in Huntsville, growing out of Spanish influence epidemic.
- 12:04Speaker 3: All druggists, physicians, and prescription thirds except one have been
- 12:12Speaker 3: instructed with the disease and this distrusting air apparel reaching
- 12:20Speaker 3: Montgomery last night in telegrams for media help for the
- 12:25Speaker 3: sicken city. Although there was no official count of the
- 12:30Speaker 3: number of children who died in Huntspital during the pandemic
- 12:34Speaker 3: or how many were obeyed in Maple Hill, the number
- 12:38Speaker 3: must have been in the hundreds. And that was that's
- 12:50Speaker 3: crazy and several arm you know places from you know,
- 12:57Speaker 3: houses and cemeteries, know the counter that goes in the
- 13:01Speaker 3: heart of Dixie. And and also with that, you know,
- 13:10Speaker 3: you get the cemetery as well as according to the
- 13:13Speaker 3: Cemetery Department, that the number could be as high as
- 13:19Speaker 3: one hundred thousand soldiers. During the World War Civil War,
- 13:25Speaker 3: nearly two hundred Confederate soldiers were buried there, addition as
- 13:29Speaker 3: many Union soldiers in the cemetery as well. And you
- 13:41Speaker 3: know that, and when they put this playground here, you
- 13:47Speaker 3: know that many have reported sounds of laughter, children calling
- 13:52Speaker 3: out they were as they're not strong enough. Several people
- 13:56Speaker 3: have discovered orbs of light at the children's playground folls
- 14:03Speaker 3: after having them developed very strange. Indeed, and you know,
- 14:19Speaker 3: you know there was a cemetery used to be a
- 14:26Speaker 3: tweaku plant was sold to a planner, Leroy Pope, a
- 14:35Speaker 3: Huntsville founder, and it grew some sophistically over time, and
- 14:44Speaker 3: the cemetery expanded through the land purchases, knowly in eighteen
- 14:49Speaker 3: seventy three to as accommodate Huntsville's going population. The construction
- 14:58Speaker 3: of the playground was the playground officially named those part
- 15:06Speaker 3: sites adjacent to the cemetery, surrounded by old beach trees
- 15:13Speaker 3: and limestone foundations. It's good nickname steams from children. Urban
- 15:19Speaker 3: legends have prisceined for decades. It was constructed in nineteen
- 15:25Speaker 3: eighty five to build a space for children while families
- 15:31Speaker 3: visited the grades. The playground's location near the barrow sites
- 15:37Speaker 3: sparked airy taels. Two thousand and seven, the city attempted
- 15:44Speaker 3: and mild the playground for a cemetery expansion, while the
- 15:50Speaker 3: public of Huntsville pretty much protested and an outcry, and
- 16:01Speaker 3: later it was it led to the the real restoration
- 16:09Speaker 3: of the playground and they end up putting new equipment
- 16:17Speaker 3: on there and new stuff new still your equipment. And
- 16:24Speaker 3: it's also known as one of America's most hunt of parks,
- 16:28Speaker 3: attracts paranormal enthusiasts du spokey lore and also in nineteen sixties,
- 16:38Speaker 3: local hotels claimed children is abducted in the nineteen sixties
- 16:43Speaker 3: were found near the playground, though their official records confirmed this.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Visitors report sings being on their own children's after orbs
- 16:56Speaker 3: as we said, especially between ten and three eight A well,
- 17:01Speaker 3: I wonder why the Alabama Paranormal Society in two thousand
- 17:11Speaker 3: and eight investigators captured a misty figure in the photo
- 17:18Speaker 3: after hearing a female voice, adding to the lore families
- 17:24Speaker 3: are used or could use the playground during the day
- 17:29Speaker 3: modern equipment like the Swings Jungle gyms, but the gates
- 17:33Speaker 3: are locked after dark, possibly to detour the trespassers due
- 17:38Speaker 3: to paranormal service. You know, there's a lot of factors
- 17:45Speaker 3: that they try to find the science behind it. Mostly
- 17:52Speaker 3: I believe it's uh, you know, the limestone is a
- 17:56Speaker 3: conductor with the paranorm It's like a if you ever
- 18:02Speaker 3: put like ten, like tin fell some something on a
- 18:08Speaker 3: nord antenna to boost the signal. It's almost like that
- 18:13Speaker 3: limestone is a like a booster on the signal and
- 18:19Speaker 3: would uh, you know, mimic the ghostly phenomena, and you know,
- 18:29Speaker 3: you know, random voices are heard, and there's been a
- 18:35Speaker 3: lot of books on as well. Author James Keane's novel
- 18:40Speaker 3: The Dead Children's Playground Picture nizes the site as part
- 18:44Speaker 3: of American horse stories, and some residents dismissed the hunting,
- 18:51Speaker 3: while others based the Lord making it a team hanging
- 18:55Speaker 3: out and ghost hunter a magnic. I would love to
- 18:59Speaker 3: pull and check it out. And they also when it
- 19:08Speaker 3: was preserved the community, you know, even though it has
- 19:15Speaker 3: a spooky name, but they they went for it, and
- 19:20Speaker 3: I'm glad they brought it back. And there's also places
- 19:29Speaker 3: I guess they do tours.
- 19:33Speaker 1: They tell you to.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Or or you have to obtain permission to visit at
- 19:40Speaker 3: night as trespass and can lead to fights and arrests.
- 19:45Speaker 3: And make sure you get proper authorization to go visit there.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Don't just go there. That's a good tip. And they
- 19:56Speaker 3: do have ghosted tours, provides a contra trust safe and
- 20:01Speaker 3: access the sites and also bringing flash sights, cameras f
- 20:07Speaker 3: meters if you have them or get them enhance paranormal investigations.
- 20:14Speaker 3: And that's pretty And as I was looking there, there's
- 20:22Speaker 3: been a lot of people that have you know, had
- 20:26Speaker 3: some stories and here's one said and countered that ghost
- 20:32Speaker 3: there once while walking my Great Dane with some friends.
- 20:37Speaker 3: We were spooked at spooked a f but eventually we
- 20:44Speaker 3: discovered it was just a gardener dressed up with scared
- 20:48Speaker 3: people out. He almost got away with it too little
- 20:53Speaker 3: and so joke there currently there's one hand and then
- 20:59Speaker 3: I used to go there as they bore a team
- 21:02Speaker 3: back in the early two thousands. Honestly never was never
- 21:08Speaker 3: was at least creeped out kilt Enclave, though if I
- 21:13Speaker 3: remember correctly. Over ten years ago, some all my old
- 21:19Speaker 3: friends pulled a prank there by Titian fish line. These
- 21:23Speaker 3: swings are hiding nearby. They waved for another group of
- 21:28Speaker 3: friends to arrive to see the swings set in motion
- 21:32Speaker 3: by an invisible force. Pretty sure the friends were only
- 21:36Speaker 3: the ones bowing the pranks. There there's some people that, oh,
- 21:48Speaker 3: let's see, this happened about a decade ago. Perhaps tell
- 21:52Speaker 3: less so my memory might be a little foggy, but
- 21:56Speaker 3: give the deep experience a go. A girl I was
- 22:00Speaker 3: dating at the time took me to the DCP because
- 22:05Speaker 3: I'd never been there before. I heard rumors that I
- 22:09Speaker 3: was haunted. We pulled up. We pulled up a bit
- 22:14Speaker 3: before dark and hung out by strung through the cemetery
- 22:18Speaker 3: because she thought the cemetery and the cemeteries in general
- 22:23Speaker 3: was a peaceful place. We wandered back to the playground
- 22:28Speaker 3: as a sun began to set. We hung around the
- 22:31Speaker 3: playgrounds until dark. We walked around the playground a bit
- 22:35Speaker 3: until she noticed small lights at the far end of
- 22:39Speaker 3: the park. You were just a handful that they were
- 22:46Speaker 3: fluttered in the air like lightning bugs. But that's where
- 22:51Speaker 3: the convinced they were until I realized they were they
- 22:57Speaker 3: were bluish. When trying to explain them away, I suggest
- 23:04Speaker 3: maybe it was car headlights reflecting through the trees, and
- 23:08Speaker 3: probably a few other maintained things like that. We watched
- 23:13Speaker 3: a few minutes, maybe a minute or two, until she
- 23:18Speaker 3: came visibly nervous and uneasily when we jumped or jumped
- 23:25Speaker 3: in her car and somewhat curisly GTFO, I guess we
- 23:32Speaker 3: got the We got the f out of there. This
- 23:35Speaker 3: was a long time ago. We both somewhat vivid imaginations.
- 23:42Speaker 3: I could have seen those had been some kind of
- 23:46Speaker 3: an explained light or flippery or thingsters, or might have
- 23:52Speaker 3: been some trippy no firefights, or he didn't know, but
- 23:59Speaker 3: he's than that haimple of times. But I don't seen
- 24:02Speaker 3: nothing yet. But there's one that put that as one
- 24:16Speaker 3: of the one of the people was there, that she
- 24:24Speaker 3: was walking down the U in the UH on the
- 24:30Speaker 3: playground and the everything, and she noticed that one of
- 24:34Speaker 3: the swings were the swings were swinging and there was
- 24:39Speaker 3: no wind, and she knows one of the swings were
- 24:45Speaker 3: swinging a little bit, we're swinging higher than the other
- 24:48Speaker 3: one was. And there was no rain, no nothing, and
- 25:00Speaker 3: uh that's uh, there's some of the you know, some
- 25:05Speaker 3: of the stories there. But if anyone's been out, been
- 25:09Speaker 3: there and want to drop the line, you can email
- 25:12Speaker 3: me at the Paranormalic ghost Stories at gmail dot com
- 25:18Speaker 3: and other sites. And I hope you enjoyed the story
- 25:25Speaker 3: and hope you have a good weekend, and and uh,
- 25:34Speaker 3: stay safe my friends, and until then, be safe and
- 25:45Speaker 3: see us soon.
