Transcript
- 0:00We'll start with chapter 6 of From the book of Amos.
- 0:04Dear God, please help us as we read through the scripture and
- 0:08give us wisdom, insight, revelation into your word and to
- 0:13what you want us to take away from this, what we should
- 0:18understand. From this we ask for the Holy
- 0:20Spirit to enlighten us in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:25So this says woe to the complacent.
- 0:28Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure
- 0:33on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation to
- 0:39whom the people of Israel come. Go to Calmet and look at it.
- 0:45Go there to great Hemeth. Then go down to Gath in
- 0:49Philistia. Are they better off than your
- 0:53two kingdoms? So the two kingdoms he's
- 0:56referring to is Israel and Judah because they were both at this
- 1:00time separated. There were 10 tribes with Israel
- 1:05and two tribes in Judah, Judah and Benjamin.
- 1:09So continuing on, is there land larger than yours?
- 1:12You put off the day of disaster and bring near a reign of
- 1:16terror. You lie on beds adorned with
- 1:19ivory and lounge on your couches.
- 1:22You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves.
- 1:25You strum away on the harps, like on your harps like David,
- 1:30and improve on and improvise on musical instruments.
- 1:34You drink wine by the bowl full and use the finest lotions.
- 1:39But you do not grieve over the rune of Joseph.
- 1:43Therefore you will be among the 1st to go into exile.
- 1:48So this is important. This is actually the prophetic
- 1:51part from what Amos is saying and he's remember he's talking
- 1:56to Israel, the 10 tribes and saying therefore you will be
- 2:02among the 1st to go into exile. And this in fact did happen.
- 2:08Israel, the 10 tribes went into exile before the 2 tribes and
- 2:13Judah did. They both eventually did, but
- 2:16Israel went first. Continuing in scripture, your
- 2:20feasting and lounging will end. The Lord abhors the pride of
- 2:25Israel. The sovereign Lord has sworn by
- 2:28himself. The Lord Almighty declares, I
- 2:31abhor the pride of Jacob and detest his fortresses.
- 2:36I will deliver up the city and everything in it.
- 2:40I want to pause right here for a minute just because of something
- 2:43that I just noticed here. It's really talking about the
- 2:48Lord abhors the pride. Last night when I went to
- 2:52church, it was about humility and pride.
- 2:55And then I listened to another sermon this morning and again it
- 3:01was talking about pride. And I really feel like when this
- 3:04kind of thing happens, that God is really sending a message to
- 3:10us. I mean, he hates pride.
- 3:12That's one of the that was one of the scriptures that's
- 3:15Proverbs 616. I always forget where that's
- 3:18located and also 17 where it's located in Scripture.
- 3:22But it talks about the seven things that God hates.
- 3:26And one of them is like haughty eyes or proud or pride or
- 3:30something, you know, looking down upon others, having a
- 3:33prideful approach. And, and I really think there's
- 3:37something that, you know, all of us can, if we look deep, if we
- 3:42look at what the word of God says, we look deep in Scripture,
- 3:47we can find pride in ourselves, every single person.
- 3:52And but we don't like to, we don't like to look at that.
- 3:55And I feel like that is something that God is
- 3:58emphasizing right now is to look at pride and examine ourselves
- 4:03for pride and surrender that to God.
- 4:06You know, ask God for help with the Holy Spirit in combating
- 4:11that. Ask for God to open our eyes and
- 4:14let us see the pride in ourselves.
- 4:17Because we don't do anything about the condition of other
- 4:21people. All we can do is look at
- 4:23ourselves and reflect on ourselves and what do we need to
- 4:27change? It's easy to throw judgement or
- 4:32commentary or observation or discernment about others having
- 4:37that, but we need to look at ourselves because it doesn't
- 4:41matter what others do. We're not responsible for others
- 4:45in that way, like every person is responsible for our own
- 4:48selves. So we all have a tendency to do
- 4:54this and some more minor and some greater, but we all have a
- 5:00tendency towards it and it's something that God hates.
- 5:04So it's something we all should address.
- 5:07And if it seems like it's being emphasized again, and look at
- 5:11what happens here is these people that Amos is talking to,
- 5:16they're living in luxury, they're enjoying, they're
- 5:19thinking, you know, let's where's my next strength?
- 5:21They're not providing justice. They're oppressing the poor.
- 5:25And they don't think any harm is going to come to them because
- 5:29they are Israel. And yet they are not focused on
- 5:35God. They have pride.
- 5:36They're looking. I mean, it'll get more into that
- 5:39later. So I'm just going to read from
- 5:40Scripture. So I abhorred the pride of
- 5:44Jacob. And to test his fortresses, I
- 5:46will deliver up the city and everything in it.
- 5:49If 10 people are left in one house, they too will die.
- 5:53And if the the relative who comes to carry the bodies out of
- 5:58the house to burn them, ask anyone who might be hiding there
- 6:02is anyone else with you and he says no.
- 6:06Then he will go on to say, Hush, we must not mention the name of
- 6:12the Lord, for the Lord has given the command, and He will smash
- 6:16the great house into pieces and the small house into bits.
- 6:21Do horses run on rocky crags? Does one plough the sea with
- 6:26oxen? But you have turned justice into
- 6:29poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.
- 6:33You who rejoice in the conquest of Lo de Barre, which means
- 6:37nothing, and say, did we not take Karnam by our own strength?
- 6:44So right there they're, you know, bragging about our own
- 6:48strength. This is where humility comes in.
- 6:52We may accomplish certain things, but we need to remember
- 6:56that ultimately it's from God. God made it happened.
- 7:01He could, he could have externally made it happen and we
- 7:03could have just been the the beneficiary of that.
- 7:06Or we also have to remember that God created us, so he created us
- 7:11with certain abilities. And if we do those certain
- 7:13things, it's because it came from God.
- 7:15So ultimately, everything good that we do comes from God, for
- 7:21the Lord God Almighty declares I will stir up a nation against
- 7:25you, Israel, that will oppress you all the way from Libo Hama
- 7:31to the Valley of Arabia, Araba or Araba.
- 7:36And that's the end of chapter 6. So we'll probably get into 7,
- 7:39but I'll read the questions and answers 1st.
- 7:42So how could thinking, how could a thinking person deny the
- 7:46problems? These people were suppressing
- 7:49the evidence, saying in effect, perhaps there will be some
- 7:53difficulty sometime in the future, but it's not going to
- 7:56happen to us. Their optimism was worldly and
- 8:00naive. The day of disaster refers to
- 8:04the day of God's judgement, which did later come upon all of
- 8:09these cities. I, you know, I think that God
- 8:15does do judgement along the way, but there is the day of the Lord
- 8:20that really comes at the end for judgement.
- 8:24And anyway, just an observation there.
- 8:29And, and I think we also should pay attention to this, just
- 8:33thinking that, oh, this is going to come along real far in the
- 8:37future sometime. We don't know that for sure.
- 8:40I mean, look at what's happening in the world right now and then
- 8:44study Bible prophecy and see what Bible prophecy says.
- 8:48And there are significant things happening in the world that
- 8:53relate to end times, the last days, Bible prophecy.
- 8:59Now someone recently said to me, and this is so true.
- 9:03This could be a foreshadowing of future events, so it could be in
- 9:10the distant future. But until we get past
- 9:13everything, we won't know if this exactly is or if it's just
- 9:19a foreshadowing of future events.
- 9:22So we really can't be certain until it actually happens and
- 9:25then it's too late. But one thing that it is for
- 9:29sure is a warning to people, a warning to people to repent and
- 9:36turn to God, reconcile our relationships with God and make
- 9:42sure that we are in we are in a good relationship with God, that
- 9:51God isn't like upset with the way we're living life.
- 9:55That's something that gets neglected by many churches.
- 9:59They love to talk about the grace, but they don't like to
- 10:03talk about repentance. And you can't really receive
- 10:08grace unless you've repented because you have to have
- 10:13forgiveness and turn away from your sin before you can have the
- 10:16grace of God. And I found it very helpful just
- 10:21when I hear the word grace, because Scripture does say this,
- 10:25but grace is actually the power of God.
- 10:30Grace to me is the Holy Spirit. So and Jesus said we needed the
- 10:35Holy Spirit to be in the Kingdom of God.
- 10:37So if we don't have the Holy Spirit, if we haven't repented,
- 10:44which means not liking our sin anymore and wanting to change
- 10:49and making the actions to stay away from sin with the help of
- 10:55the Holy Spirit, we won't be perfect in it.
- 10:58We'll still mess up. But anyone who says that, you
- 11:03know, they use well, I messed up.
- 11:06And that's where grace comes in. Yes and no.
- 11:10If you keep on doing the same sin and you don't put like you
- 11:13don't take up your own cross, why did Jesus say, you know,
- 11:16anyone who wants to follow him has to take up his own cross?
- 11:19Would it be a cross if we just said, oh, God's got this, I got
- 11:22grace, I don't have to worry about it.
- 11:25That's, you know, that's just like the watered down word of
- 11:28God that's being spoken through churches and essentially letting
- 11:34people like walk their path to hell, walk their path to
- 11:38separation from God. And it concerns me because there
- 11:43are so many people that just are comfortable in their sinful
- 11:47state and don't see anything wrong with it, don't want to
- 11:51change and just say, oh, God's got this.
- 11:53He's already Jesus died on the cross.
- 11:55I'm covered. Don't you know, don't be
- 11:57legalistic. I hear that from people, but I
- 12:01just wonder how many of those people actually read the Bible?
- 12:04How many of those people actually prayed to God about it?
- 12:07Yes, I was one of those people who like looked for loopholes
- 12:11because when I read it, it popped out to me and I was like,
- 12:15wait a minute. This is like, this is really
- 12:18serious, like this requires a change of life, a turn around of
- 12:24what your life, what your life was living like.
- 12:27And when I realized that's what the Bible said, it didn't matter
- 12:31to me what churches said. It just matters what the Bible
- 12:34said and and again, I just I loved that the Dead Sea Scrolls
- 12:41were found in, you know, recent years in the 1900s, mid 1900s.
- 12:47I guess that support that the Bible hasn't changed over these
- 12:53like 100 BC since then. It's still the same information.
- 12:59So people become of what they hear, and they use sound bites
- 13:05from other people to challenge Christianity.
- 13:09But anyone who's really dove into the book and really studied
- 13:13the Bible and critically thought about all this stuff, they tend
- 13:19to come to the same conclusion. In fact, this is kind of
- 13:22interesting because I just saw this recently about this.
- 13:25Like the person with the highest IQ in the world right now is
- 13:31stating that Christianity is the truth.
- 13:35And so that's just interesting. Like if you need affirmation
- 13:39from somebody with the highest IQ right now who's saying
- 13:42Christianity is the truth, you know, look at that.
- 13:50Because there's a lot of people who are really intelligent who
- 13:53like to pulls and Christianity and doubt and, you know, give
- 13:58all of this resistance to Christianity, but because they
- 14:03think that they're smarter than what's in the Bible.
- 14:07But again, God uses the humble people and maybe people who
- 14:13aren't as intelligent to confound the wise.
- 14:17Scripture says that so the simple people can actually
- 14:21understand God's word. And sometimes the more
- 14:25intelligent people have difficulty, and perhaps it's
- 14:28because of pride, because of thinking that a person is
- 14:35greater than they are and not humbling themselves, and
- 14:39therefore they're blocking what God can do in their life.
- 14:43Therefore they're blocking the Holy Spirit.
- 14:46God's not going to give gifts and the power of the Holy Spirit
- 14:51to someone who is prideful because there would be a lot of
- 14:56harm done with that. They can kind of have those
- 14:59things, but the way they live life, I always refer back after
- 15:04I found it because the Bible is so insightful and it helps us to
- 15:08examine ourselves and also not to be fooled by other people,
- 15:11hopefully to have discernment. But Galatians chapter 5 is a
- 15:16great resource because it talks about those who live worldly
- 15:20lives and those who live by the Spirit.
- 15:23And that is where people can, if you want to develop discernment
- 15:28about people, memorize Galatians Chapter 5, get to know what that
- 15:33is. And then you can apply those
- 15:35simple things to see what spirit is behind a person.
- 15:40And it's discernment is pretty easy if you understand Galatians
- 15:445 because you will really see the spiritual condition of a
- 15:47person just based on their everyday actions.
- 15:50They don't even have to tell you what they believe.
- 15:53You can just observe them and see.
- 15:56So anyway, it's probably better to observe and not ask because
- 16:01people can tell you what they want to tell you.
- 16:04But look at how they act. OK, back to the questions and
- 16:08answers. What would they see at Kalna,
- 16:11Hemeth and Gath? Some say the Israelites would
- 16:15see the destruction caused by God's judgement of these foreign
- 16:20cities. Others suggest the Israelites
- 16:23would see that Israel was better off and possessed larger tracts
- 16:27of land than those Pagan cities, but had sunk to the same level
- 16:32of immorality. How could the people live in
- 16:36such ease with rune all around? The Rune of Joseph refers to the
- 16:41devastation of the rank and file Israelites.
- 16:45Jeroboam the Second had won many military victories.
- 16:50He and his Royal Court enjoyed the spoils of war and could
- 16:56afford excessive carousing and 1st class living.
- 17:00But they ignored the plight of the poor city, the plight of the
- 17:04poor city dwellers, and cared nothing for the peasants.
- 17:09The social set lived as if they were the only ones that
- 17:12mattered. Why did the Lord swear by
- 17:16himself? The Lord offered an oath at the
- 17:19beginning of this verse and rested the authority of that
- 17:24oath on Himself. Oaths must be fulfilled with no
- 17:30possibility for revocation. In effect, the Lord was placing
- 17:35His own sovereignty and character as God on the line as
- 17:40He made assurances regarding the truth and effectiveness of His
- 17:44declaration. Why cremate the dead?
- 17:48When an ancient city was being sacked, the corpses piled up
- 17:52quickly, and in that hot Mediterranean climate, a corpse
- 17:56began to decompose immediately. The typical custom was to bury
- 18:00the body within a day, a day of death.
- 18:04But in times of war, with numerous bodies to attend to,
- 18:08cremation was more was more expedient.
- 18:13Why were they afraid to mention the name of the Lord?
- 18:17Some, recognizing that their devastating punishment came from
- 18:21the Lord, may have feared that mentioning his name would call
- 18:25his attention to the fact that they that there were still
- 18:29survivors. It's also possible that others
- 18:32were afraid they might accuse or curse God for failing to protect
- 18:38them. Aware by now of his wrath, they
- 18:42wanted to guard themselves against more of it.
- 18:46What was the conquest of Lo de Bar?
- 18:48Lo de Bar was a remote town east of the Jordan that was recovered
- 18:53for Israel by King Jeroboam. The Second the prophet noted
- 18:58that noted the arrogance of Israel in believing that it had
- 19:03achieved this great military triumph because of its own
- 19:07strength rather than God's. OK, now we'll go into Chapter 7.
- 19:12Locust, fire and a plum line. This is what the sovereign Lord
- 19:16showed me. He was preparing a swarm of
- 19:19locust after the King's share had been harvested and just as
- 19:24the late crops were coming up. OK, so the Lord showed Amos that
- 19:30he was preparing swarms of locusts.
- 19:33So why do we think, you know, we know Scripture tells us God has
- 19:38not changed. So when there's like infestation
- 19:43of crops, why do we not think that maybe God, you know,
- 19:48planned that. God allowed that.
- 19:51And there's a purpose behind it. The purpose always seems to be
- 19:55in Scripture that He wants people to turn to Him, that He
- 20:00has to sometimes take away the goodness in our life in order to
- 20:05get us to quote rock bottom so that we turn to Him.
- 20:09Because in good times, we don't turn to Him.
- 20:13But in bad times, many people turn to Him, and that's what it
- 20:18does happen. You have to look and see that
- 20:20that happens. Like many people come to the
- 20:23Lord because of something very bad, very devastating in their
- 20:27life. And unfortunately, there were
- 20:31probably times when their life was good that God was trying to
- 20:36reach them, but they ignored God.
- 20:40So then God has to do something that they don't like that they
- 20:44wouldn't prefer, but he does it because he wants them to turn to
- 20:50him and they are not listening. I think that happened to me.
- 20:54I think God was reaching out to me many times when things were
- 20:57quote good in my life, but I ignored it.
- 21:01And so then God had to knock me down and make me, make me
- 21:07humble. And then I finally turned to
- 21:11God. And so I do see that and I see
- 21:15that in other people. That's when a lot of times when
- 21:17people turn to God, when they come to God, it's after they've
- 21:20had some devastating blow. So anyway, so God was, he's
- 21:27preparing swarm of locusts after the King's share that had been
- 21:31harvested. And just as the late clock crops
- 21:34were coming up, when they had stripped the land clean, I cried
- 21:38out, Sovereign Lord, forgive. How can Jacob survive?
- 21:43He is so small. OK, so look at this, look at how
- 21:46God is. So the Lord relented.
- 21:50So that was a vision that God showed him.
- 21:52But then Amos prayed and basically prayed, talk to God
- 21:56and the Lord relented. He decided not to do that.
- 21:59This will not happen, the Lord said.
- 22:03This is what the Sovereign Lord showed me.
- 22:05The Sovereign Lord was calling for judgment by fire.
- 22:09It dried up the great deep and devoured the land.
- 22:12Then I cried out. Sovereign Lord, I beg you, stop.
- 22:16How can Jacob survive? He is so small.
- 22:20So the Lord relented. This was the second time.
- 22:24This will not happen either. The Southern Sovereign Lord
- 22:27said, this is what he showed me. The Lord was standing by a wall
- 22:32that had been built true to plum with a plum line in his hand,
- 22:37and the Lord asked me, What do you see, Amos?
- 22:40A plum line, I replied. Then the Lord said, look, I am
- 22:44setting a plum line across my people Israel.
- 22:49I will spare them no longer. The high places of Isaac will be
- 22:55destroyed, and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined.
- 22:59With my sword I will rise again against the House of Jeroboam.
- 23:07Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent a message to
- 23:10Jeroboam, king of Israel. Amos is raising a conspiracy
- 23:15against you in the very heart of Israel.
- 23:18The land cannot bear all his words, for this is what Amos is
- 23:23saying. Jeroboam will die by the sword,
- 23:28and Israel will surely go into exile away from their native
- 23:33land. Then Amaziah said to Amos, Get
- 23:39out you seer, go back to the land of Judah, earn your bread
- 23:44there, and do not prophecy. Do and do your prophesying
- 23:48there. Don't prophecy anymore at
- 23:51Bethel, because this is the King's sanctuary and the temple
- 23:54of the Kingdom. Amos answered Amaziah, I was
- 23:59neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd,
- 24:03and I also took care of Sycamore fig trees.
- 24:08But the Lord took me from tending the flock, and said to
- 24:12me, Go prophecy to my people, Israel.
- 24:16Now then, hear the word of the Lord, you say, Do not prophecy
- 24:22against Israel, and stop preaching against the
- 24:25descendants of Isaac. Therefore this is what the Lord
- 24:29says. Your wife will become a
- 24:32prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by
- 24:37the sword. Your land will be measured and
- 24:40divided up, and you yourself will die in a Pagan country, and
- 24:45Israel will surely go into exile away from their native land.
- 24:51And that's the end of Chapter 7. So I will read the questions and
- 24:57answers for this chapter. Why was Amos so alarmed?
- 25:02God revealed to Amos in a vision that He was what he was
- 25:05preparing for His people. Locusts were going to be sent
- 25:09into the land at just the right time of the year to wipe out the
- 25:11whole year's harvest. The destruction was going to be
- 25:14totally to be total and devastating.
- 25:19Amos responded to the vision in horror because he knew that if
- 25:23it came to pass, Israel would be destroyed.
- 25:26Does God change his mind? God is sovereign over His
- 25:29decisions and does not quote change his mind as we might
- 25:32think of it. God is aware of the future and
- 25:35the decisions humans will make. However, God does present
- 25:40choices to His people with either stated or unstated
- 25:44qualifications. If you do this, then I will do
- 25:49that. Also.
- 25:50God shows Himself merciful when His servants intercede on behalf
- 25:56His people. We see this in God's dealing
- 25:59with Abraham, Moses, and others. So from a human perspective, or
- 26:04from the bottom up, it may seem as if God is changing His mind.
- 26:09But from the top down, God, God's changed mind, is actually
- 26:14what He was planning all along. What did the Plumb line show?
- 26:20It showed that Israel was crooked.
- 26:23The Plumb line was a cord with a weight tied on the end.
- 26:28Ancient builders like those today held it beside buildings
- 26:33under construction to make sure the walls were straight.
- 26:36When God put that Plumb line to Israel, it didn't meet His
- 26:39standards. He had to tear it down and start
- 26:42over. Makes sense.
- 26:45In all of our lives, sometimes our lives have to be torn down
- 26:48and start over. We have to become a new
- 26:50creation, a new creation that receives the Holy Spirit in
- 26:55order to change. So that's something that I
- 26:59didn't always understand, but after reading the Bible, it
- 27:03became very clear. So continuing what were the high
- 27:07places of Isaac? These were places where Isaac
- 27:10had offered sacrifices centuries before, but Jeroboam had erected
- 27:15sanctuaries there to accommodate the worship of Pagan gods Baal
- 27:20and Ashtarath. The Israelites apparently
- 27:23worshipped the Lord there as well, even though God had
- 27:27instructed them to worship him only in Jerusalem.
- 27:33Why was Amos seen as a political conspirator?
- 27:36Because his message of impending judgement threatened the
- 27:39political and religious establishment.
- 27:42A Messiah 1 of Jeroboam's priest stood to lose his job if people
- 27:48accepted Amos prophecy against the status quo.
- 27:52So a Messiah tried to discredit Amos and run him out of the
- 27:57town. Why has or why was it
- 28:03significant that Amos had been a shepherd, not a prophet?
- 28:07Amos was emphasizing the nature of his call to Amaziah, who was
- 28:12a professional prophet. Amos was not a professional
- 28:15prophet, nor was he beholden to the king.
- 28:19Rather, Amos was a nobody, but God had called him.
- 28:23Therefore, Amos was claiming the lordship of God over his
- 28:28prophetic ministry, as opposed to a Messiah who served the
- 28:33king. What happened to a Messiah?
- 28:36The prophecy said that he would be carried off into exile with
- 28:39the other prisoners of war, but there is no further mention of
- 28:43specific details about how and when he died.
- 28:47And so that's the end of chapters 6:00 and 7:00, and
- 28:53we'll end there and pick up Chapter 8 next time.
