Latest / Gilbert. K Show / Tom Cruise vs. Verity: Which Movie Wins the Weekend?
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: 55 minutes ago, my company informed me of the explosion on our rig, causing massive water displacement and triggering a tsunami.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise versus Verity.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Which movie wins the weekend?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise is walking movie theater this Friday.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Book Talk is already inside.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: They've saved an entire row, bought the popcorn, and started arguing about the ending.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to the Gilbert Take.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: This Friday, October 2nd, we have two movies arriving with two very different reasons to watch.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Digger gives us Tom Cruise, an original movie directed by Alejandro, in a ritual Verity takes Colleen Hoover's best-selling thriller and puts Ayn Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett right in the middle of it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: So here's my question: What gets people into a theater faster these days?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: A huge movie star or a story they already love?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And before anyone gets upset, I know Digger and Verity can both succeed.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I'm asking which one gets your ticket first?
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: You have Friday night free, your friend is texting.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: What are we seeing?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: What do you say?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about Digger.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: According to official description, Cruz plays a powerful man, trying to convince the world he can save humanity before a disaster he caused destroys everything.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: That is quite the apology tour.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: I made a little mistake.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: How little?
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Well, humanity might end.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Did you at least send an email?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: What grabs me is a combination of Cruz and Inaritu.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: When I hear Tom Cruise's movie, I picture a man running at a speed I haven't achieved since I was late for a flight.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: In Narutu, meanwhile, directed Birdman and the Revenant.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: So I'm curious what happens when those two bring their instinct together.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Will we get the familiar Cruz energy in a story that feels completely different?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Will he play someone we're supposed to admire, fear, laugh at, or all three?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know yet, and that's part of the appeal.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: The film also has Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Huller, Michael Stallberg, and Jesse Plamas.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: That is a cast with enough talent to make a conversation about the weather feel intense.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And Digger is an original story.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Nobody can tell you the book was better.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Nobody can whisper, wait until they get to that part while you're trying to enjoy your popcorn.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: That gives the film a challenge, though.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: It has to get people excited about something they don't already know.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Tom Cruise is a pretty good place to start.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Still, your average moviegoer needs more than a famous name.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: They need to look at the trailer and say, okay, what on earth is going on?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I need to see this.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Now let's talk into the Verity House carefully.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I would leave my luggage in the car.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Dakota Johnson plays Lohan a struggling writer hired to finish a successful author's book series.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: The author, Verity, is played by Anne Hathaway.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Loan moves into the family home, finds disturbing notes, and begins to wonder what's real, what's written, and whom she can trust.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Josh Harnett plays Verity's husband, Jeremy.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: First of all, I would like to speak to whoever explained this job to Loan.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Great opportunity, lovely house, some writing involved.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Please ignore anything horrifying you find in the office.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: No.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Take your laptop and work from a coffee shop.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Verity has something valuable before a single ticket is sold.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Readers who already care, they know the names, they have opinions.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Some have probably spent years telling their friends, you have to read this so I can talk to you about it.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Now they get to bring those friends to the theater instead, and that can make for a fantastic opening weekend.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: You've got people who want to see whether the movie matches the version they imagined.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You've got people who never read the book but love a twisty thriller.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Now you've got the person who was dragged along and spends the ride home saying, wait, explain the manuscript to me again.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Every friend group has one.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's me, but adaptations have a difficult job.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Book fans remember tiny details.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: They remember how a scene made them feel.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: An actor can deliver a terrific performance, and somebody will say, That's not how I pictured the kitchen.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: The kitchen.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Imagine trying to please everybody.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If everything gets attention and the big emotional questions, right?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Though it could give people exactly what they want from a night at the movies.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Something to argue about afterwards.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Respectfully, of course, until somebody says the book ending made more sense.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Then good luck.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Why this matchup interests me.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Here's the part I find fascinating as a filmmaker and producer.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: These movies are asking the audience to make the two different bets.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: With Digger, you're betting on the people making it.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: You're saying I trust Cruz and in a re to take me somewhere interesting.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: With Verity, you may already know the story.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: You're betting on the movie's version of it.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: You're saying, show me those characters.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Show me that house.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Show me whether you can make me feel what I felt while reading.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Neither ticket is cheap.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: By the time you add popcorn, a drink, and whatever mysterious fee appears at checkout, you want the movie to earn your Friday night.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: That's what I don't think the real competition is simply cruise versus book talk.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: It's curiosity versus familiarity.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Do you want to go in with no idea where the story will take you, or do you want to see a story you know?
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: Turn into something you can experience with a room full of people.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I love both feelings.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: I also love sitting in a theater when the entire audience reacts at once.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: You can watch a movie alone at home, but you can't manufacture that moment when 200 people gasp together and somebody three rows back says, Oh no.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: That person will immediately apologize, but they spoke for all of us.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: So which one would I pick to have the louder conversation this weekend?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: I'm leaning toward Verity.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: The book gives people a reason to show up early, and thrillers give people a reason to call their friends afterward.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: If the film lands, I can already picture viewers leaving the theater and opening their phones before they've even reached the parking lot.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: But I'm curious about the longer game for Digger.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: If Cruz surprises audiences, if the story takes a big swing and if people come out saying, I didn't expect that, word of mouth could become its best advertisement.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Notice how carefully I'm making this prediction.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I have to come back here next week and face you all.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I also want to know whether the title on the poster changes your choice.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: If these were the exact same movies with unknown cast, would digger still interest you?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: If verity weren't based on a book people already discuss, would this trailer be enough to get you there?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: That's the bigger Hollywood question hiding inside this weekend.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: What actually convinces us to try a movie?
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: A star, a director, a book, a friend who won't stop talking about it?
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Or one great trailer that makes us forget what we're doing and watch it twice.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: For me, it changes every time.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Sometimes a title grabs me, sometimes an actor does, and sometimes I just want to sit in the dark for two hours and let somebody else deal with the disaster, especially if Tom Cruise caused it.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: So here's your assignment.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: You have one ticket for Friday night.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Are you seeing Digger or Verity?
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: If you're seeing both, tell me which one goes first.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And please, if you've read Verity, keep the comment spoiler-free for the people who haven't.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Give them a chance to be suspicious of everyone on their own.
