- 0:00Western psychology has taken a very narrow and therefore quite
- 0:05inadequate view of the nature of dreams.
- 0:09There are several primary ways dreams are analysed in the West.
- 0:13The 1st is the purely mechanical structuring of dreams as a
- 0:17chaotic processing of undigested residues of the observations,
- 0:22mental and emotional activity of the daily life that are simply a
- 0:27type of churning of the brain as it winds down after a day of
- 0:31action. Another view popularized by
- 0:34Freud is that dreams represent some deep subconscious drives
- 0:39that we suppress in our waking life, but which expose
- 0:42themselves in dream and in particular relating to childhood
- 0:47trauma, unresolved sexual tensions or fears.
- 0:52Yet another view developed by Jung emphasizes what he calls
- 0:57the collective unconscious, which holds archetypes that span
- 1:01across humanity and which are not specifically tied to an
- 1:05individual, but to a more general framework within which
- 1:10we all live and act. All of these are relevant to
- 1:14some degree and need to be addressed in a more
- 1:17comprehensive understanding of dreams and their significance.
- 1:22There are, however, several types of dreams that clearly do
- 1:26not fit any of these models. Dreams have occupied the
- 1:30attention of people throughout human existence and across all
- 1:34civilizations. The Old Testament of the Bible
- 1:39relates the story of the Pharaoh of Egypt having a recurring
- 1:43dream about 7 fat cows and seven lean cows and his concern about
- 1:48having this interpreted by his wisest advisers.
- 1:52Though they were unable to resolve this and by chance,
- 1:56Joseph, an Israelite, was brought before the Pharaoh and
- 2:01he interpreted the dream for him in such a way as to evidence
- 2:05that there would be 7 years of abundance followed by 7 years of
- 2:09privation. This led to stockpiling and
- 2:13managing the surplus to tide the Kingdom.
- 2:16Over the seven lean years, many people have reported dreams that
- 2:22seem to be prophetic, that foretell certain events that may
- 2:25occur. The mechanism for this remains
- 2:29uncertain. Are they simply subconsciously
- 2:33extrapolating on facts and details and analysis that they
- 2:37did not sort and organize consciously?
- 2:40Or is there some form of predestined reality, some
- 2:45directed result that they are simply gaining access to, such
- 2:50as is claimed by those who access the Akashic records?
- 2:54Or which arise from precipitating actions and
- 2:57energies arriving from a more causal world, such as one of the
- 3:02mental or vital worlds that work to form the reality within which
- 3:07we live and act in our external being?
- 3:12When the Shields of the waking consciousness are lowered during
- 3:15sleep, it is possible for the consciousness to recognize and
- 3:20process signals that it otherwise would disregard or
- 3:24reject. This may also help explain why
- 3:28dreams may provide insights far beyond what our waking minds are
- 3:32able to develop. A well known spiritual teacher
- 3:37and author told a story some years ago about going back to
- 3:40India for a visit. He lives in the USA and being
- 3:45directed by his family to visit a Vedic astrologer in the area
- 3:49who had a stellar reputation. This astrologer indicated he had
- 3:54somehow known that this individual would visit, and he
- 3:58pulled out a scroll that had an historical recitation of events
- 4:02in his past life which were known to him but were not
- 4:07generally known by others, as well as events forthcoming to
- 4:11him in the future. Vedic astrology, Western
- 4:16astrology, and the work of mystical researchers such as the
- 4:20students of Theosophy all indicate there may be
- 4:23information about the future accessible to individuals.
- 4:28In some instances, this information appears to come
- 4:31forward in dreams. There can be premonitory dreams
- 4:36that do not provide prophetic information but give the
- 4:40individual a feeling that helps them avoid certain things, such
- 4:45as events that would otherwise be shown to have had disastrous
- 4:48consequences if they had not refrained from participation
- 4:53based on the premonition they received in their dreams.
- 4:58Some individuals have had dreams that connected them with loved
- 5:01ones far away who were suffering or dying, such as documented
- 5:06situations during the First World War where a sister dreamt
- 5:10about her brother dying in Europe at just the time that he
- 5:14was killed. Yet other individuals have
- 5:18dreams where they are in some vital world fighting or trying
- 5:21to survive the attacks and pressures of that vital world.
- 5:26One incident was related that had an individual dreaming about
- 5:29fighting with a vital being that had taken the shape as Adolf
- 5:34Hitler. He wound up fighting this
- 5:36presence and woke up in a cold sweat after having finally
- 5:41defeated this vital being. He was so shaken by the event
- 5:45that he immediately wrote down the dream as he had experienced
- 5:49it. Still other times we learn of
- 5:53people seeing individuals they have never met but who come into
- 5:57their lives in the future. This goes beyond raw
- 6:01coincidence. There are also those instances
- 6:04where individuals report meeting spiritual guides or teachers in
- 6:08the dream state and obtaining various teachings from them.
- 6:13The Mother reported that as a child she was regularly guided
- 6:17by a teacher during dream, and when she met Sri Aurobindo, she
- 6:22recognized him as the guide from that time.
- 6:26The dream state occurs for the most part in the subconscious
- 6:30parts of the being, and much of it is in fact confused,
- 6:35disorienting and draining on the energy.
- 6:39Thus, eventually the seeker needs to bring a higher
- 6:42conscious awareness into the entire being, including the
- 6:47subtle physical levels, in order to texture the subconscious to
- 6:51hold and manifest more light and thereby not act as an obstacle
- 6:57to the spiritual growth and development.
- 7:01Sri Robindo notes quote. These dreams are not all mere
- 7:05dreams. All have not a casual,
- 7:09incoherent or subconscious building.
- 7:12Many are records or transcripts of experiences on the vital
- 7:15plane into which one enters in sleep.
- 7:18Some are scenes or events of the subtle physical plane.
- 7:23There one often undergoes happenings or carries on actions
- 7:26that resemble those of the physical life, with the same
- 7:30surroundings and the same people, though usually there is
- 7:34in arrangement and feature. Some are a considerable
- 7:38difference, but it may also be a contact with other surroundings
- 7:43and with other people not known in the physical life, or not
- 7:47belonging at all to the physical world.
- 7:51In the waking state you are conscious only of a certain
- 7:54limited field and action of your nature.
- 7:57In sleep you can become vividly aware of things beyond this
- 8:02field, a larger mental or vital nature behind the waking state,
- 8:07or else a subtle physical or a subconscious nature which
- 8:11contains much that is there in you, but not distinguishably
- 8:16active. In the waking state.
- 8:18All these obscure tracts have to be cleared, or else there can be
- 8:23no change of property. You should not allow yourself to
- 8:27be disturbed by the Press of vital or subconscious dreams,
- 8:31for these two make up the larger part of dream experience.
- 8:36But aspire to get rid of these things and of the activities
- 8:40they indicate to be conscious and reject all but the Divine
- 8:45truth. The more you get that truth and
- 8:48cling to it in the waking state, rejecting all else, the more all
- 8:53this inferior dream stuff will get clear.
