- 1:12Jason Wolbers: Thanks for having me, Tom.
- 1:13Jason Wolbers: I'm glad to be here.
- 1:14Tom Jackobs: I am super excited to talk to you as well, Jason, because I love having authors on the show and especially ones that have such a great message about your and the positive mindset and how that relates to business and all that.
- 1:29Tom Jackobs: So I'm really excited for today's conversation.
- 1:32Tom Jackobs: I know our audience is gonna be really excited as well, but of course, first, what's your definition of a heart-led business?
- 1:41Jason Wolbers: My definition of a heartfelt business or a heart-led business is basically being able to do something that you actually love.
- 1:49Jason Wolbers: I think it starts there.
- 1:51Jason Wolbers: If people can find their purpose in life, follow the purpose with a career or a business.
- 1:57Jason Wolbers: To me, it's so much easier to lead with heart when you believe in what you're doing and you're passionate about it.
- 2:05Jason Wolbers: So I believe when you find your passion, go after it, that will lead you into a heartfelt business, and that's what happened for me for sure.
- 2:12Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 2:13Tom Jackobs: Awesome.
- 2:13Tom Jackobs: Yeah, and we hear this over and over again.
- 2:16Tom Jackobs: You know, when you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life and, you know, follow your purpose or your passion.
- 2:23Tom Jackobs: And I always like to add one ca caveat to that though.
- 2:27Tom Jackobs: Um, make sure that your purpose, has a market to it as well, and you're good at it as well.
- 2:35Tom Jackobs: So we had a guest on the show.
- 2:37Tom Jackobs: He said there's three circles that need to come together.
- 2:40Tom Jackobs: One is your passion, one is that you're good at it, and the third is the most important, that there's a market for it as well.
- 2:48Jason Wolbers: That's a good point.
- 2:49Jason Wolbers: Just because it's your passion doesn't mean it's gonna be able to make you an income.
- 2:53Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 2:54Tom Jackobs: I mean, I have a passion for underwater basket weaving, but you know, then can't sell to many of those, so,
- 3:00Jason Wolbers: that's not gonna go, that's not gonna go Tom.
- 3:04Tom Jackobs: Exactly.
- 3:05Tom Jackobs: I think the li, any listeners are like, Tom.
- 3:07Tom Jackobs: Good.
- 3:07Tom Jackobs: A new joke, because I keep saying that over and over again.
- 3:10Tom Jackobs: Anyway, Jason, tell us a little bit about your business and kind of how you started and got into having a heart-led business.
- 3:19Jason Wolbers: Well, I got into sales with my dad and mom's company back in, uh, 1995, when I was 18 years old.
- 3:24Jason Wolbers: Okay.
- 3:24Jason Wolbers: And when I say passionate, my dad had done it for 10 years already, and it's, we sell home safety equipment.
- 3:32Jason Wolbers: Okay?
- 3:32Jason Wolbers: That's what we do in our business.
- 3:35Jason Wolbers: So my dad, I knew what he was doing.
- 3:37Jason Wolbers: I knew that he was going out into people's homes, literally visiting with mom and dad, you know, grandma and grandpa or you know, whoever and sharing with them products that could literally save a life in the event of say a fire.
- 3:50Jason Wolbers: Carbon monoxide leak, or it could save their property with a flood free sensor.
- 3:54Jason Wolbers: That's the kind of products that we sell home safety equipment.
- 3:58Jason Wolbers: Okay.
- 3:58Tom Jackobs: Okay.
- 3:59Tom Jackobs: More than just an alarm system.
- 4:00Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 4:01Tom Jackobs: So it's like a fire extinguisher or
- 4:05Jason Wolbers: It's anything in everything.
- 4:06Tom Jackobs: Oh, Oh, okay.
- 4:08Tom Jackobs: Oh, nice.
- 4:09Tom Jackobs: Oh, very cool.
- 4:09Jason Wolbers: Fire blankets.
- 4:10Jason Wolbers: I mean burn, care products, you name it.
- 4:14Jason Wolbers: But that's why I said before, find something you're passionate about and go after it.
- 4:18Jason Wolbers: 'cause the thing I was passionate about, Tom just so happened to be a good moneymaking opportunity also in my instance.
- 4:24Jason Wolbers: So it's esy for me to say that, right?
- 4:26Jason Wolbers: But that's what we do.
- 4:28Jason Wolbers: And, it's so easy to lead with heart, and then we look for people like when we're hiring.
- 4:34Jason Wolbers: I always tell people, I, I don't care if you have any experience in sales.
- 4:38Jason Wolbers: I honestly don't.
- 4:39Jason Wolbers: I almost don't want them to have experience in sales.
- 4:42Jason Wolbers: What I want them to do is care about people.
- 4:46Jason Wolbers: I want to go into someone's home, sit down with them, and show them how much they care.
- 4:51Jason Wolbers: Zig Ziglar used to say all the time, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.
- 4:56Jason Wolbers: And that's, that would be another way to define a heart, a heart-led business is
- 5:01Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 5:02Jason Wolbers: you have to be able to care about what you're doing if you're gonna lead with your heart.
- 5:06Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 5:06Tom Jackobs: Well, absolutely, because if you don't, well, one in sales, if you don't care about what you're selling, like it's very difficult something that you don't like right.
- 5:14Tom Jackobs: Or passionate about as well.
- 5:16Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 5:17Tom Jackobs: Absolutely.
- 5:18Tom Jackobs: And take us back to kind of how you got into the business.
- 5:22Tom Jackobs: Obviously family business, but you don't always have to follow the family business.
- 5:26Tom Jackobs: So what got you into it and got you passionate about it?
- 5:30Jason Wolbers: I have a fun story for that one.
- 5:31Jason Wolbers: So, when I was a senior in high school, I'll be honest with you, Tom, my grades were not very good.
- 5:35Jason Wolbers: Okay?
- 5:36Jason Wolbers: I wasn't gonna be doing, having a career in education.
- 5:38Jason Wolbers: All right?
- 5:39Jason Wolbers: So I told my mom and dad jokingly, I said, uh, a college would be a waste of my time and your money.
- 5:46Jason Wolbers: So I said.
- 5:47Jason Wolbers: You gonna let me come to work with your company or not?
- 5:49Jason Wolbers: Because that's what I want to do.
- 5:51Jason Wolbers: I've always had a passion for it.
- 5:52Jason Wolbers: I always liked what my dad did.
- 5:53Jason Wolbers: I thought it because it had meaning and it helped people.
- 5:57Jason Wolbers: And obviously it didn't just help other people.
- 5:59Jason Wolbers: It helped my parents to provide an income for their family and to be able to do some of the things they wanted to do in their lives.
- 6:05Jason Wolbers: Just like what we're talking about on this podcast.
- 6:07Jason Wolbers: Right?
- 6:07Jason Wolbers: So I was 18 years old and I guess you could almost say I gave my mom and dad an ultimatum, you know, go ahead and waste your
- 6:14Tom Jackobs: Nice.
- 6:14Jason Wolbers: on college, or, I'm coming to work for you.
- 6:16Jason Wolbers: And they chose me coming to work for them.
- 6:18Jason Wolbers: Well, I went to work for them and within three short months I was the international sales champion for the entire, uh, company for a month.
- 6:26Jason Wolbers: And then I ended up doing that three times in my first five, uh, six months.
- 6:31Jason Wolbers: The next year, the year after that, two years in a row, I was the number one salesperson in the entire organization.
- 6:36Jason Wolbers: Two years in a row, and I've never looked back.
- 6:39Tom Jackobs: Wow.
- 6:40Tom Jackobs: Why?
- 6:41Tom Jackobs: Why do you think that is?
- 6:43Tom Jackobs: Yeah, so was did, did your dad take you around to sales calls early on or kind of indoctrinate you into, I hate to use that word, but
- 6:54Jason Wolbers: So this is another funny story.
- 6:56Jason Wolbers: We would ride around, you know, that's one of the ways we train people in our industry is you take them with you, you know, and show them a real appointment, right?
- 7:03Jason Wolbers: So I remember times when I was driving with my dad and he'd be like, well, I'm gonna let you drive home.
- 7:07Jason Wolbers: Now, mind you, I'm 18 years old and you know,
- 7:10Tom Jackobs: yeah.
- 7:10Jason Wolbers: My dad was in the military, I'd be driving home and I'd be getting coached up on how to drive.
- 7:15Jason Wolbers: So I'm getting coached up on how to.
- 7:16Jason Wolbers: Sell, coach Dun, how to drive Coach Dun.
- 7:19Jason Wolbers: I'm like, dad, it's enough coaching.
- 7:20Jason Wolbers: Just teach me how to sell.
- 7:21Jason Wolbers: You can do the driving.
- 7:22Jason Wolbers: Okay.
- 7:22Jason Wolbers: I don't want to drive your car home from the appointments.
- 7:25Jason Wolbers: I just wanna learn more about how to sell the products.
- 7:27Jason Wolbers: But yeah, my dad was a really, my dad is a heartfelt, uh, a heart.
- 7:31Jason Wolbers: He's, he uses, he leads with his heart too, and he's very, he's a disciplinarian too though, so he's not quite as hard.
- 7:38Jason Wolbers: Let lead as I am.
- 7:40Jason Wolbers: My dad's more like Jason, you need to lead with your brain sometimes too, you know?
- 7:44Jason Wolbers: But, um, I lead heavily with my heart, but I also have done a lot of studying research.
- 7:50Jason Wolbers: I obviously follow my brain as well.
- 7:53Jason Wolbers: I think there's a, there needs to be a 50 50 balance there between the
- 7:57Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 7:57Jason Wolbers: Um, but yeah, I did a lot of riding around with them, Tom, a lot of just sitting there listening to the entire appointment, taking it all in.
- 8:04Jason Wolbers: Uh, I became a trainer then for his company before I took my own dealership with the company and my older brother.
- 8:11Jason Wolbers: Listen to this story, my older brother, when I was training my older brother, because see, I think Jeremy, my older brother who's passed away unfortunately, but
- 8:19Tom Jackobs: Oh, sorry.
- 8:20Jason Wolbers: I think he had to see me be successful before he joined.
- 8:24Jason Wolbers: Joined the quote unquote family business, right?
- 8:27Jason Wolbers: Well, rate, Jeremy would ride along with me and he was more of an intellectual than I was.
- 8:32Jason Wolbers: So Sit there in these appointments and I would be sitting across the table from the couple, right?
- 8:37Jason Wolbers: Jeremy would be to my left or right, wherever we got positioned.
- 8:40Jason Wolbers: And he would stare at me so intently that I could feel him staring through me.
- 8:46Jason Wolbers: And we were in a sales call one time, Tom and I broke down and started laughing, and I just said, Jeremy, you gotta quit staring through me, bro.
- 8:53Jason Wolbers: And then we it made a big joke out of it.
- 8:55Jason Wolbers: And then we co of course we sold him a full house full of products.
- 8:58Jason Wolbers: After that.
- 8:58Jason Wolbers: We had
- 8:58Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 8:59Jason Wolbers: But yeah, we have some really fun stories about those ride along trainings.
- 9:02Jason Wolbers: But that's another way you find people that can lead with their heart, get to know them.
- 9:07Jason Wolbers: Get to know people and that ride along training helped me to get to know my dad in a different way.
- 9:12Jason Wolbers: For my dad to get to know me
- 9:13Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 9:13Jason Wolbers: in a business setting and me to get to know my brother and all of our trainees.
- 9:17Jason Wolbers: We, we did a lot of that ride around training with them and still do to this day, 30 years later.
- 9:22Tom Jackobs: How much of a difference do you think that makes in terms of knowing that person, um, in a different light, like especially around a family business?
- 9:33Tom Jackobs: 'cause you know, dad's dad,
- 9:36Jason Wolbers: Yep.
- 9:36Tom Jackobs: When dad's at work, dad's a little bit different.
- 9:38Tom Jackobs: It's like, what was.
- 9:39Tom Jackobs: How did that work for you guys?
- 9:41Jason Wolbers: The dynamic there was good.
- 9:43Jason Wolbers: We it was hard at first, say when I worked directly for him.
- 9:48Jason Wolbers: It was hardest.
- 9:49Jason Wolbers: I'm still in his organization.
- 9:51Jason Wolbers: He's still in the business.
- 9:52Jason Wolbers: He's the regional director, which by the way, I'm being promoted.
- 9:55Jason Wolbers: He's retired and I'm being promoted to that position in April next year.
- 9:58Jason Wolbers: So I'm excited about that.
- 10:00Jason Wolbers: But, man he showed
- 10:00Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 10:01Jason Wolbers: me the ropes and he taught me everything.
- 10:02Jason Wolbers: And it is hard to work for your dad, especially when he was in the military.
- 10:05Jason Wolbers: And he has a certain way that he expects things to be done.
- 10:09Jason Wolbers: And I respect that completely.
- 10:10Jason Wolbers: I learned a lot from that.
- 10:11Jason Wolbers: But it was hard.
- 10:13Jason Wolbers: It was hard to be like.
- 10:15Jason Wolbers: You're in business with him and you're looking at him like, you're, but you're my dad.
- 10:18Jason Wolbers: Be nicer to me.
- 10:20Jason Wolbers: But he was nice, but he was firm.
- 10:23Jason Wolbers: He was nice, but
- 10:23Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 10:24Jason Wolbers: I did get to know a different dad and I got I've learned to respect his leadership because the reason that he was hard on you is because he wanted you to be successful.
- 10:33Jason Wolbers: And he knew that if he was soft in this business, you'd be part of the 75% that wasn't gonna make it.
- 10:40Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 10:40Tom Jackobs: Yeah, abs absolutely.
- 10:42Tom Jackobs: And it's always interesting to see your parents in a different light almost.
- 10:47Tom Jackobs: You know, when you're almost equals with them and you're in business and all that.
- 10:51Tom Jackobs: It's such an interesting.
- 10:53Tom Jackobs: Dynamic and a shift in that dynamic as well.
- 10:56Tom Jackobs: Yes.
- 10:57Jason Wolbers: It was, but let me just say one more thing about that.
- 10:59Jason Wolbers: My mom always still played the mom role no matter what, and the wife role, like even though she was in the business with us, she.
- 11:07Jason Wolbers: She just stepped back with the business and family were the same to her with us, with my dad, and with me and my brother, and my sister did it too for a while.
- 11:15Jason Wolbers: just was mom, no matter what.
- 11:17Jason Wolbers: She was always mom.
- 11:18Jason Wolbers: And I think that helped my dad and I, and my brother and I, and my sister and I, and all of us as a family unit to work together.
- 11:23Jason Wolbers: It helped that mom was always mom.
- 11:25Jason Wolbers: No matter what.
- 11:26Jason Wolbers: She never went into like business mode.
- 11:27Jason Wolbers: She was always mom, no matter what.
- 11:29Jason Wolbers: So if my dad and I would get in an argument.
- 11:31Jason Wolbers: She'd be back to being his wife.
- 11:33Jason Wolbers: The minute after it was over and my mom and she just, she'd settle it out.
- 11:36Jason Wolbers: It never became personal if we had a
- 11:39Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 11:40Jason Wolbers: TIF or a rift in the business.
- 11:41Jason Wolbers: It was never, it never became personal with any of us.
- 11:45Tom Jackobs: Oh, that, that's great.
- 11:46Tom Jackobs: And what a great role for her and
- 11:48Jason Wolbers: She relished it.
- 11:49Jason Wolbers: She did good in it.
- 11:50Tom Jackobs: Yeah, it's probably pretty challenging too, I would imagine.
- 11:52Jason Wolbers: Guarantee you.
- 11:53Jason Wolbers: There were days where she.
- 11:55Jason Wolbers: was like, boys, come on.
- 11:56Jason Wolbers: Quit being boys.
- 12:00Tom Jackobs: But you know what moms.
- 12:01Jason Wolbers: So it always worked out.
- 12:02Jason Wolbers: At the end of the day, we did real well together.
- 12:04Jason Wolbers: So that always helps when you're making money and you're being successful.
- 12:08Tom Jackobs: When everybody's winning, like that's, yeah.
- 12:11Tom Jackobs: That's great.
- 12:12Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 12:12Jason Wolbers: it, you know, it was, it got hard.
- 12:14Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 12:15Tom Jackobs: So let's talk about those times when things get difficult and the business isn't going exactly as we think.
- 12:22Tom Jackobs: A lot of heart-led business owners, myself included, find it difficult to continue leading with the heart.
- 12:29Tom Jackobs: How have you been able to reconcile kinda those hard times where, you know, you have that customer and you're like, I really don't wanna sell them, but I need the money.
- 12:38Jason Wolbers: Right.
- 12:39Jason Wolbers: Well, It's still 30 years deep.
- 12:42Jason Wolbers: I'm 48 now.
- 12:43Jason Wolbers: I started when I was 18.
- 12:44Jason Wolbers: That's still a challenge, as you just alluded to yourself, right?
- 12:47Jason Wolbers: It's still a challenge when things get tough.
- 12:49Jason Wolbers: Now, I will say this for you, anyone listening that started a business that you're leading with your heart.
- 12:55Jason Wolbers: I want you to understand something.
- 12:56Jason Wolbers: You have to remember your wallet too.
- 12:58Jason Wolbers: You absolutely must save your money during the good times because I don't care what kind of business you're in, you're gonna have the bad times.
- 13:08Jason Wolbers: And that has been what's been our saving grace.
- 13:11Jason Wolbers: My dad taught me at a young age to save money.
- 13:14Jason Wolbers: So when things are going good, what's helped?
- 13:16Jason Wolbers: What helped?
- 13:17Jason Wolbers: To answer your question, what helps me and what I think what helped my dad to continue to leave with our heart is the savings account, balance, the checking account, balance the investments, knowing that hey.
- 13:27Jason Wolbers: What we've done the past, whatever it was, if I was five years deep, 10, 15, 26 months, whatever it was, at least I had a little bit to show for it.
- 13:34Jason Wolbers: And in some cases it started growing and I had a lot more to show for it.
- 13:38Jason Wolbers: But as long as you have a little bit of, and it's hard at first, I didn't save any money.
- 13:42Jason Wolbers: The first five years I really didn't, I was making plenty, but I didn't save any.
- 13:46Jason Wolbers: But my dad had, my dad did, so he could still lead with his heart, even when I was.
- 13:51Jason Wolbers: to think with my wallet, you know.
- 13:53Tom Jackobs: Right.
- 13:54Jason Wolbers: But the saving of the money, Tom, is the answer to that for me.
- 13:56Jason Wolbers: If you gotta have a cushion and you gotta start building that cushion as soon as you can.
- 14:01Jason Wolbers: Save during the hard times so you can continue to lead with heart during, save during the good times so you can continue to lead with your heart during the bad times.
- 14:09Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 14:10Tom Jackobs: Do you have a certain system that you.
- 14:12Tom Jackobs: Incorporate or habit to make sure that you are saving on a weekly basis or monthly basis.
- 14:17Tom Jackobs: Forced
- 14:18Jason Wolbers: savings.
- 14:19Jason Wolbers: My dad taught me that at a young age.
- 14:20Jason Wolbers: My dad taught me so many things, and my mom too.
- 14:22Jason Wolbers: Don't get me wrong, when I say my dad, just consider, I'm talking about both of them, but my dad's the one that mentored me the most.
- 14:27Jason Wolbers: I talked, I still talk to him all the time on the phone.
- 14:30Jason Wolbers: You know, we, he's my mentor.
- 14:31Jason Wolbers: He is my number one mentor in my life.
- 14:33Jason Wolbers: So that's why I use his name more than mom's.
- 14:36Jason Wolbers: Mom mentored me in so many different ways, but business, it was dad.
- 14:40Jason Wolbers: So he taught us to use four savings.
- 14:43Jason Wolbers: Like my investments just come outta my business checking account every single month.
- 14:47Jason Wolbers: I don't have to think about it.
- 14:48Jason Wolbers: It's just like a car payment or a house payment, auto withdrawal.
- 14:51Jason Wolbers: And then in our business, you know, we have to pay sales tax, we have to pay, obviously everybody does income tax.
- 14:58Jason Wolbers: We have to pay our employee tax, all these different things.
- 15:00Jason Wolbers: M So we learned this from another business mentor.
- 15:03Jason Wolbers: We have like seven savings accounts attached to our business.
- 15:07Jason Wolbers: Checking.
- 15:08Jason Wolbers: We move the money every time we get paid on a deal, we move all the money where it's supposed to be.
- 15:12Jason Wolbers: All of it, inventory, everything.
- 15:14Jason Wolbers: Has its own place.
- 15:15Jason Wolbers: And then we're not misappropriating the money.
- 15:17Jason Wolbers: That helps us a lot.
- 15:19Tom Jackobs: That's awesome.
- 15:20Tom Jackobs: Is that the Profit First program or?
- 15:23Jason Wolbers: They didn't call it that.
- 15:25Jason Wolbers: He just called it a, uh, what the world did he call it?
- 15:28Jason Wolbers: He had a name for it.
- 15:30Jason Wolbers: It is just, it's just a basic, simple cash flow sheet where moving money where it's supposed to be.
- 15:35Tom Jackobs: Yeah that's very smart.
- 15:37Tom Jackobs: And there's a book called Profit First, and the whole system is around, um, saving, taking your profit first, you know, pay yourself first and then figuring out the rest, uh, later.
- 15:49Tom Jackobs: Um, and the author of the book is Mike something.
- 15:55Jason Wolbers: That's all right.
- 15:56Jason Wolbers: I wrote the book down.
- 15:56Jason Wolbers: I'm gonna look it up when we're off the call or off the Zoom.
- 15:59Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 16:00Tom Jackobs: Um, but yeah, it's a very disciplined approach and I tell you what, um, it's saved my butt during COVID, uh, during downturns.
- 16:07Jason Wolbers: So you're using it too, that's good.
- 16:09Tom Jackobs: Absolutely.
- 16:10Jason Wolbers: Good.
- 16:11Tom Jackobs: Because if you're not, because this is what happens in a lot of business.
- 16:14Tom Jackobs: I'm so glad that you brought this up too, by the way.
- 16:16Tom Jackobs: Um, you're going through the month, everything's going fine, and then you have this mentality.
- 16:22Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 16:23Tom Jackobs: At the end of the month, I'm gonna take my profit and then do something with it.
- 16:26Tom Jackobs: But then at the end of the month, you've gone on your little spending spree and you've, oh yeah, I need to get that computer or whatever.
- 16:34Tom Jackobs: And at the end of the month, no profit.
- 16:37Tom Jackobs: You've spent everything.
- 16:39Tom Jackobs: But if you had taken your profit first and then figured out how to.
- 16:44Tom Jackobs: Fit the rest into paying your bills, then you wanna overspend.
- 16:47Tom Jackobs: And it's the same kind of philosophy of dieting.
- 16:51Tom Jackobs: 'cause it like we, our bodies are, and ourselves and our minds don't like a vacuum, right?
- 16:58Tom Jackobs: We like to fill the vacuum.
- 16:59Tom Jackobs: Right?
- 16:59Jason Wolbers: Right,
- 17:00Tom Jackobs: it's if you have a full plate, you're gonna have, if you have a big plate, you're gonna fill with food.
- 17:06Tom Jackobs: You're gonna eat it all.
- 17:07Tom Jackobs: You have a smaller plate, then you're gonna fill that with food and eat it all.
- 17:11Tom Jackobs: But it's less food.
- 17:13Tom Jackobs: And it's the same with, you know, your savings and your and doing that.
- 17:17Tom Jackobs: Making sure that you take the profit first and then just use what's left over to pay the bills.
- 17:23Jason Wolbers: Absolutely.
- 17:24Jason Wolbers: No, that's right.
- 17:25Jason Wolbers: And that's what we do.
- 17:27Jason Wolbers: And it has worked for us.
- 17:28Jason Wolbers: And you know, I'd be lying to you, Tom, if I told you that I listened to all my dad's advice the first few years I was young.
- 17:34Jason Wolbers: I was 18 years old, 19, 20, 21.
- 17:37Jason Wolbers: And I was spending all the money.
- 17:38Jason Wolbers: But I wasn't running a business yet.
- 17:40Jason Wolbers: Then I was a commissioned salesperson.
- 17:42Jason Wolbers: When I started running the business is when it was either listen to him or fail.
- 17:49Jason Wolbers: Because our business our business is pretty consistent because the home safety industry is gonna always be there.
- 17:54Jason Wolbers: You know, people always need these types of products.
- 17:56Jason Wolbers: However, what about your mindset?
- 17:58Jason Wolbers: What about your attitude?
- 17:59Jason Wolbers: What about your, what if a factory closes in the town you're selling the most in?
- 18:02Jason Wolbers: Things like you, you can't control the environment around you, right?
- 18:06Jason Wolbers: So I did have to learn real quick.
- 18:08Jason Wolbers: I better start saving that money so that I can stay in business.
- 18:10Jason Wolbers: And that's advice I'd give to any business owner that wants to continue to leave with your heart.
- 18:14Jason Wolbers: Make sure you take care of your wallet too.
- 18:17Tom Jackobs: Yeah, and have that cushion for sure.
- 18:19Jason Wolbers: Have a cushion if you can.
- 18:22Tom Jackobs: So tell us about your book, the Power of Positive Mindset.
- 18:26Jason Wolbers: Okay.
- 18:27Jason Wolbers: I'll show you it for those of you that are viewing this.
- 18:30Jason Wolbers: It's called the Power of a Positive Mindset, and, uh, forward by Kristen Butler, by the way, which really inspired me.
- 18:36Jason Wolbers: I became friends with her.
- 18:37Jason Wolbers: She's the CEO of the power of, or the, excuse me, power of positivity.
- 18:43Jason Wolbers: She's all over social media.
- 18:44Jason Wolbers: She's pretty big.
- 18:45Tom Jackobs: Oh,
- 18:46Jason Wolbers: In this genre.
- 18:47Jason Wolbers: she wrote a Forward for me, which was really special, but this is a revised edition and it's available October 14th of this year, 2025.
- 18:55Jason Wolbers: Um,
- 18:56Tom Jackobs: okay.
- 18:57Jason Wolbers: Uh, I wrote the book because of all the things I learned in the sales business.
- 19:01Jason Wolbers: That's why I wrote the book because I learned that if my mindset is good, my sales will generally follow.
- 19:08Jason Wolbers: But when my mindset started going astray, my sales would go astray really fast.
- 19:13Jason Wolbers: And then I kept seeing it over and over again in salespeople that we would hire.
- 19:17Jason Wolbers: The positive attitude would sell a lot.
- 19:19Jason Wolbers: The negative person would not.
- 19:21Jason Wolbers: So I decided in 2021 or 22, I can't remember what year, but I decided to start writing.
- 19:27Jason Wolbers: I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna put these thoughts on paper.
- 19:30Jason Wolbers: then I was like, you know what, the, one of the biggest thing our salespeople told me about reading over the years, they would say, I don't have time.
- 19:38Jason Wolbers: And my wife and I do 10 times more than most of they do.
- 19:41Jason Wolbers: I mean, we really do.
- 19:43Jason Wolbers: We're on boards and stuff.
- 19:45Jason Wolbers: I mean, we do a lot outside of our business, right?
- 19:46Jason Wolbers: And I'm like, okay, well if I have time to read how do you not have time to read?
- 19:50Jason Wolbers: I mean, all I know what they do.
- 19:52Jason Wolbers: I, they work for me, right?
- 19:53Jason Wolbers: So I'm like, so what I did, Tom, I wrote a book.
- 19:57Jason Wolbers: a 90 day format that takes three minutes a day to read.
- 20:00Jason Wolbers: Day one, day two, day three, day four, all the way through 90.
- 20:06Jason Wolbers: With topics like attitude is everything, problem or opportunity.
- 20:11Jason Wolbers: steps to your future goals.
- 20:12Jason Wolbers: Fear, feel the fear, and do it anyway.
- 20:15Jason Wolbers: Repetition is the mother of learning.
- 20:17Jason Wolbers: Just all different topics and I literally wrote this book and I'm writing a second book right now from the heart.
- 20:25Jason Wolbers: This isn't like theology, you know what I mean?
- 20:28Jason Wolbers: It's not like the deepest thing you're ever gonna read, but it's gonna inspire you every day when you pick it up.
- 20:33Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:33Tom Jackobs: And then they can just put that on repeat every 90 days.
- 20:36Tom Jackobs: Just keep going back through the book.
- 20:38Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:38Tom Jackobs: I love that.
- 20:38Jason Wolbers: It's available in Audible too.
- 20:40Jason Wolbers: So if that's another thing.
- 20:41Jason Wolbers: If you don't have time, just listen to it.
- 20:43Jason Wolbers: It's three minutes a day.
- 20:45Jason Wolbers: Just listen to it while you're brushing your teeth, you know?
- 20:47Jason Wolbers: That's what I do.
- 20:47Jason Wolbers: I listen to this book every morning because I don't care that I wrote it.
- 20:51Jason Wolbers: I need it.
- 20:52Jason Wolbers: I need what's in it.
- 20:53Jason Wolbers: I need a daily dose of positivity in my life.
- 20:56Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:57Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 20:58Tom Jackobs: I think everybody needs that.
- 20:59Jason Wolbers: We do.
- 21:00Tom Jackobs: Quite frankly.
- 21:00Jason Wolbers: Too many people just go through life without it though.
- 21:03Jason Wolbers: They go through life just kind of coasting.
- 21:06Jason Wolbers: And as a business owner, you can't do that.
- 21:08Jason Wolbers: You have to stay focused.
- 21:10Jason Wolbers: You have to stay disciplined.
- 21:11Jason Wolbers: You have to have habits and books like this, not just this one.
- 21:14Jason Wolbers: There's other books that are written in similar formats that I have found that have been very helpful to me.
- 21:18Jason Wolbers: But these are helpful because they're quick and easy and it gives you a little bit of what you need to get your day started.
- 21:23Jason Wolbers: I'd recommend read it in the morning, by the way.
- 21:25Jason Wolbers: For sure.
- 21:25Tom Jackobs: Yeah, anytime that you can set that mindset early on, um, just makes the day go so much better.
- 21:35Tom Jackobs: It's like you wake up in the morning, stub your toe, you know it's gonna be a bad day Because it's the rest of the day is like, oh, that toe still hurts.
- 21:44Jason Wolbers: One of the topics in the book, one of the head or one of the days, it's wake up on the right side of the bed.
- 21:49Jason Wolbers: No joke.
- 21:50Jason Wolbers: That's the title of the chapter.
- 21:52Jason Wolbers: Wake up on the right side of the bed.
- 21:53Jason Wolbers: 'cause so many people say, I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
- 21:56Jason Wolbers: Well, why don't you intentionally wake up on the right side of the bed.
- 21:59Tom Jackobs: Yeah, and who decided which was right and which one's wrong.
- 22:04Jason Wolbers: That's right.
- 22:05Jason Wolbers: But you're right.
- 22:06Jason Wolbers: That's what happens to us.
- 22:07Jason Wolbers: It's a domino effect.
- 22:08Jason Wolbers: The suckiest up your toe getting out of bed, it, even with a good mindset that can screw up your morning.
- 22:13Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 22:13Tom Jackobs: And then that can go into days and weeks and months and,
- 22:17Jason Wolbers: It sure can.
- 22:17Tom Jackobs: But, yeah.
- 22:19Tom Jackobs: But keeping that positive mindset on a regular basis, meditations, reading all that.
- 22:24Jason Wolbers: And listened to such other episodes and some of those folks were speaking on spirituality and you know, those types of topics and I really enjoyed that.
- 22:32Jason Wolbers: By the way, your other episodes, I listened to several of them.
- 22:35Tom Jackobs: Oh, thanks.
- 22:35Tom Jackobs: Thanks for that.
- 22:36Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 22:36Jason Wolbers: I'm gonna continue to also there.
- 22:38Jason Wolbers: It's a very good podcast for those of you listening, keep listening, because I've been in business 30 years and I'm get, I'm getting a lot from Tom and the guests that I'm listening to.
- 22:48Tom Jackobs: I mean, I think that's really the benefit that I've gotten from the podcast the most, and it was an unexpected benefit, was just these connections and the stories that people have around.
- 23:00Tom Jackobs: Just, you know, the purpose of the show is like, how do you have a heart-led business, but still make money and be okay with that?
- 23:06Tom Jackobs: And it's amazing how resilient people are and how great and how, you know, sharing people like you are in terms of their journey.
- 23:15Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 23:15Jason Wolbers: Absolutely.
- 23:16Jason Wolbers: Keep cranking it, man.
- 23:17Jason Wolbers: I've been enjoying the episodes and I'm gonna keep listening to'em.
- 23:20Tom Jackobs: Awesome.
- 23:20Tom Jackobs: Well, I appreciate that.
- 23:21Tom Jackobs: We've gotten to that time and I can't believe I, and I say this every episode because I have great guests on here, but I do mean this it's completely flown by.
- 23:30Tom Jackobs: Um, but tell us how can people learn more about you and your book and what you're up to?
- 23:36Jason Wolbers: Okay.
- 23:36Jason Wolbers: Well, I have a website, jasonwolbersmotivation.com.
- 23:40Jason Wolbers: That's simple, right?
- 23:41Jason Wolbers: My first name and then motivation, first and last name, and then motivation.
- 23:44Jason Wolbers: And then anything on social media, any, anywhere you go.
- 23:48Jason Wolbers: It's Jason Wolbers's Motivation.
- 23:49Jason Wolbers: So Facebook, Instagram, TikTok.
- 23:52Jason Wolbers: Those are the three I use the most.
- 23:53Jason Wolbers: YouTube, I have a YouTube channel.
- 23:55Jason Wolbers: I do.
- 23:56Jason Wolbers: Um, uh.
- 23:57Jason Wolbers: Oh goodness.
- 23:58Jason Wolbers: LinkedIn, I have that, but I just don't use it very much.
- 24:01Jason Wolbers: I'm more on the motivational side, so I like the social media where you make a quick video, pop it up and motivate people, but that's where they can find me and they can find.
- 24:08Jason Wolbers: If you're gonna pre-order the book, I'd recommend you do it on at barnesandnoble.com, if you don't mind.
- 24:13Jason Wolbers: That helps me as the author.
- 24:14Jason Wolbers: It helps our, my publisher, we're trying to get the book on store shelves, and the best way to do that is to sell a whole bunch through Barnes and Noble before it releases.
- 24:23Tom Jackobs: Oh that's brilliant.
- 24:24Tom Jackobs: Uh, I'll have to remember that for my next book.
- 24:27Jason Wolbers: Yeah, that's what my publisher wanted me to do.
- 24:29Jason Wolbers: So I'm just following Morgan, James Morgan.
- 24:31Jason Wolbers: James Publishing took a chance on me.
- 24:33Jason Wolbers: I appreciate that too.
- 24:34Jason Wolbers: A little shout out to them.
- 24:35Jason Wolbers: And David Hancock, the owner, he's a great guy and I got to know him through stuff like this.
- 24:40Jason Wolbers: By the way, Tom, it's connections.
- 24:42Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 24:43Jason Wolbers: Yep.
- 24:43Tom Jackobs: Connections leading with heart.
- 24:45Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 24:46Jason Wolbers: Yes,
- 24:46Tom Jackobs: That's amazing.
- 24:47Tom Jackobs: Awesome.
- 24:48Tom Jackobs: Well, we'll link all that up into the show notes to make sure that makes that easy for everybody as well.
