Transcript
- 0:59Speaker 1: Hey Scotchy Bourbon Boys, tiny here to tell you all about Rosewood Bourbons and Rye the bourbon that implicated Andy Dufresne in a double homicide he did not commit in the classic movie Shawshank Redemption, initially produced in California by General Distillers in the 1930s and originally called Lewis Hunter's Rosewood Bourbon.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Hunter's Rosewood Bourbon.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Master blender, jason Giles, has brought back Rosewood to you by purchasing plus contract distilling barrels of bourbon in Kentucky and Indiana.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Once they mature he ships them to Texas where he ages them for at least another summer in the Longhorn heat.
- 1:33Speaker 1: The Rosewood Contextian blend and the Rosewood single barrels offer a unique bourbon and rye experience.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Please drink responsibly and never drink and drive.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Drinking bourbon, sipping on some scotch.

- 3:18Speaker 1: We're live on YouTube and Facebook.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Welcome everybody.
- 3:20Speaker 1: We're live on YouTube and Facebook.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Welcome everybody.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm going to quick now rush over to the YouTube.
- 3:27Speaker 1: We are live, so it should be right there.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'll hit that.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I got to turn down the volume, that's for sure, to make sure that doesn't come up.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Click on that.
- 3:36Speaker 1: I should be able to click on that and yeah, that should be just full on your phone.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Uh, what do we got there?
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, we got everything.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Um, hopefully, that usually shows me.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Oh, we got.
- 3:51Speaker 1: It's a different.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They've upgraded the program.
- 3:54Speaker 1: All right, to give me how many people are there?
- 3:57Speaker 1: I don't see.
- 3:58Speaker 1: I want to see the comments, but I don't see them at the moment.
- 4:05Speaker 1: All right, let's go back there.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yep, there we go.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So I'll monitor the comments like that.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I put that up there.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Uh, welcome, thomas andrews of michigan's there and everyone.
- 4:16Speaker 1: All right, everybody, we're set up for, uh, the youtube and the facebook.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Uh, welcome on the audio podcast.
- 4:24Speaker 1: This is going to be a really cool podcast, the setup, because you guys on youtube and facebook could see it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: So tonight uh is going to be this blind tasting.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Roxy, uh so graciously, has set the blind tasting up for me.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Uh, I chose uh initially one of the cool things and I I can talk about this, but let's just do quickly Now.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I initially was able to go to the store and I wanted to know now, with the price increase, what bourbons were under $30.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Because you know, when you go to there and you're not always buying under $30 or whatever, you're not always paying attention to the basic brands like the Jim Beams, also the Evan Williams, all those different.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You've had them and we do specific podcasts with them, but overall you're not always paying attention to the price increase.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So there was me and Walker Cyrus, who's on the Facebook and the YouTube tonight monitoring for me, walker, really, one of the things that Walker came across was old granddad 114.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Now that across the country by Walker he was able to get it for $29.99 and lower, but here in the state of Ohio.
- 5:46Speaker 1: It's $32.99.
- 5:48Speaker 1: That is the manufacturer's suggested retail price and that's what I'm going for because that didn't make it in.
- 5:55Speaker 1: But we had what I had in my stock and I'll talk about the other seven Weller Special Reserve, buffalo trace.
- 6:03Speaker 1: I had a top shelf, a benchmark, what else?
- 6:08Speaker 1: Um, I had Jim beam distillers cut which I bought for 29, 99.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I had Jim beam single barrel, 24, 99.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And I also had, uh, um, jim beam Beam which is the Prohibition, the Prohibition style Jim Beam.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And then I had I want to say it was Makers.
- 6:33Speaker 1: There was one other one that was in here, let me think Weller, special Reserve Jim Beam, we're going me think, uh, weller, special reserve jim beam.
- 6:50Speaker 1: We're going, uh, oh, jd dant, which, uh, with jd dant, uh, bottled in bond, and those were.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Those were the ones that that were.
- 6:54Speaker 1: That didn't make the cut the way I did.
- 6:56Speaker 1: It was short, fast bursts of very little bourbon with water in between, each pour to clear my palate.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And then I was, and I'll tell you this, it's what you're in the mood for.
- 7:12Speaker 1: These bottles all have been open.
- 7:14Speaker 1: That's one of the things I wanted to do.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I didn't want to be cracking brand new bottles because brand new bottles you got.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You know it's a whole different thing when whiskey has been in the bottle for a while I believe that's when it's been open and you got a decent amount in there it definitely uh, it definitely gets better.
- 7:31Speaker 1: So it it's, it goes into its best mode.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So what came out of there the five that I was able to that I was in the mood for and was really tasting and I felt that's what my palate was liking at the moment.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And as you evolve, your palate can change.
- 7:50Speaker 1: So this could be completely different in six months a year.
- 7:54Speaker 1: And I've always noticed that Sometimes I'm picking up tons of caramel, sometimes I'm picking up chocolates.
- 7:59Speaker 1: There's lots of different flavors and then sometimes you're feeling it and sometimes you're not.
- 8:05Speaker 1: How complex it is, how much it's there.
- 8:08Speaker 1: That's all different.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Your palate evolves and it's always different.
- 8:11Speaker 1: You're always looking for good whiskey and every single one of those that I tried that didn't make it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: They're all good.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I've been surprised lately by Buffalo Trace and Weller Special Reserve.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I like them a lot more than I did initially once.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I've had them a good amount of times.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So they're up there, but they just didn't make the cut.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Now, what I didn't have I'll talk about.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I wasn't able to pick up an Old Tub.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Old Tub is one of my favorite bourbons under $20 and $30 to drink.
- 8:43Speaker 1: I think right now it's $23.99.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I think that's what it was, but so under $25 and $30.
- 8:49Speaker 1: And there was none, and I don't have any because usually that bottle is what I'll hit in between sometimes and whatnot.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So that did not make the cut tonight.
- 8:58Speaker 1: But then there was also a bunch of other ones.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Another one would that I know that probably would be evan williams, bottled in bond.
- 9:05Speaker 1: But I really surprised myself with this evan williams heroes bottle that I was able to pick up at the distillery, which was a very, which is, which was really good and and that kind of surprises you.
- 9:19Speaker 1: But then there was a bunch of other ones.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Let's see, post your favorite.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Yeah, everybody, if you want and talk about this, post your favorite under $30 bourbons that you have.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And if you guys are just trying to find out which ones, that's fine too.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Let's see, we got something I got to get rid of right now, cause that was all right.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Oh, that's going along.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Hey, john, good to see you.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I'm glad that you're here.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Uh, also, I have no idea again.
- 9:54Speaker 1: All right, so I'm getting off, I got off track.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So then there was this early times, which I've really seriously since I started drinking bourbon.
- 10:08Speaker 1: It started out at $22.99.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I think right now it's $27.99.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Buffalo Trace has acquired it.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I don't think this is Buffalo Trace juice.
- 10:16Speaker 1: They acquired it from the people who were doing early times, which I remember I think it was actually.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I want to say no, I have no idea where it was before, but they were able to acquire it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I think they bought the stock and I just I, absolutely this bourbon has been a favorite of mine.
- 10:39Speaker 1: We made bourbon balls.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I use this to make wassail, the bourbon I use for wassail.
- 10:45Speaker 1: This has a very fall flavor to it, so I've always liked it.
- 10:49Speaker 1: And then the other one was it didn't surprise me Jim Beam.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Double Oak is what came out of all those Jim Beams and it's under $30.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And it is double oaks and I love double oaks and I love double oaks.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So it didn't surprise me that that's the one out of all those gym beams that I was doing came out.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And then there's, uh, the green river 1885.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Aaron harris uh, introduced this to us at the kentucky bourbon festival.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Fantastic, fantastic, um, fantastic.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, now JW Dant was in the bottled and bond, it just didn't make it.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Now, some of them didn't make it because when I was tasting the pellet, some picked up some a funky, almost a grape taste, and then another one picked up an ash ashy taste and ashy taste.
- 11:39Speaker 1: So when you're comparing them directly quickly, sometimes they do affect you.
- 11:45Speaker 1: But these are the five that came out that we're going to blind test.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So let me take a moment wwwscotchiebourbonboyscom for all things Scotchie Bourbon Boys.
- 11:54Speaker 1: We've got the Glencairns, we've got the t-shirts and we are working on getting some bourbon balls in there.
- 12:01Speaker 1: So if you're interested, you could contact me directly on Facebook through Messenger or go through the website.
- 12:10Speaker 1: That's fine, it's awesome.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Remember, we are also on all the major podcast formats iHeart, apple, spotify, deezer, whatever.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Wherever you listen to, we're there.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And then also we're on Instagram, youtube, facebook and X.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We are pushing the Instagram, we are pushing the X and we're on Facebook and YouTube live right now.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So everything, I'm picking up our game, folks, because what's been happening, what's really been cool and it's kind of kind of fun.
- 12:49Speaker 1: But if you look back on the Scotchy Bourbon Boys and what we've been doing, it's kind of been amazing, the people that we've had.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Aaron Harris, master Distiller of Green River.
- 13:02Speaker 1: We've done a talk with Steve Nally, master distiller at Bards Home Bourbon Company.
- 13:09Speaker 1: One of our really good friends of the podcast is Greg Schneider.
- 13:13Speaker 1: He's the master distiller of Chickie Cock Whiskey and the brand ambassador.
- 13:17Speaker 1: But he's been in this business forever and he's helped us so much.
- 13:22Speaker 1: But he's been in this business forever and he's helped us so much.
- 13:23Speaker 1: Alan Bishop, now at Old Homestead, formerly master distiller at Spirit of French Lick and the distiller and help of the barrel picker from our current barrel picks of Lillian Sinclair and William Dalton.
- 13:40Speaker 1: And as we go we keep getting more and more.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Brent Elliott's been on.
- 13:46Speaker 1: We're scheduling to do another podcast with Brent Elliott this weekend.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm going down to Augusta.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I'm going to have Alec Castle on the podcast.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I'm going to be going in March.
- 13:59Speaker 1: We're going to be going and doing a podcast at Maker's Mark with Rob Samuels the podcast of what we're doing right now and all the people that were within the industry bringing on bringing you that content.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But then we're also going to all the festivals.
- 14:15Speaker 1: We just finished up last weekend at the Ohio Craft Distillery.
- 14:19Speaker 1: That video will be coming up.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I'm bourbon on the Banks.
- 14:24Speaker 1: The video is not Bourbon on the Banks but New Orleans Bourbon Festival.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I finished the video That'll be coming out on.
- 14:31Speaker 1: It's already on Roku and it'll be coming out on YouTube real soon.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Bo Cumberland has just shot our fourth annual Scotchy Bourbon Boys bus tour.
- 14:44Speaker 1: We've done a bus tour of 21, 22, 23, and 24 now and these bus tours are phenomenal.
- 14:54Speaker 1: But this time, what Bo has done and put together, we're going to have a new opening with our theme song, our theme song done by Kenny Fuller.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's just kind of like crazy what's been happening with the podcast.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I'm so glad that I can keep coming live to you.
- 15:14Speaker 1: One thing that's really cool is Tuesdays and Thursdays are coming back.
- 15:18Speaker 1: We've gone through all the pre-recorded podcasts.
- 15:21Speaker 1: I will have to see what happens with the pre-recorded podcast that I do with Alec Castle this weekend and as I keep going forward, you know Whiskey Thief is our sponsor, walter Zausch there, and then you've got we've got Kelly, we've got Hannah, we've got Derek, all friends of the podcast.
- 15:45Speaker 1: So we're going to be going down.
- 15:47Speaker 1: November 2nd the Whiskey Thief Festival is going to be happening, live music and everything.
- 15:54Speaker 1: 5 to 11, 30 pm.
- 15:56Speaker 1: We'll be covering that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: The Kentucky Bourbon Festival.
- 15:59Speaker 1: We're part of the staff, so they're having appreciation for us.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I mean, it's just crazy what's been going on.
- 16:05Speaker 1: It's getting bigger and bigger.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I appreciate everybody who's watching on YouTube Eight people watching doing this.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Spend your time wisely, yeah, so that's great.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I love it when somebody comes on and just rips on us.
- 16:24Speaker 1: It's like you don't have to Now when I'm doing a blind tasting.
- 16:28Speaker 1: This is the most honest way to taste and we're going to get to this right now.
- 16:32Speaker 1: The reason why I say it's the most honest is because blind takes away all of the marketing.
- 16:42Speaker 1: It takes away all of your preconceived notions and what you think doesn't always happen.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Now I think I've been drinking enough bourbon from these different distilleries to pick out, maybe, which one.
- 17:00Speaker 1: But what I'm going to do, I'm not trying to figure out which one it is that I'm drinking when I do this blind, I'm trying to pick out which one is the best.
- 17:12Speaker 1: So the way that you do that is you got to start off.
- 17:16Speaker 1: You clean your palate, so I'm going to nose them all first and then, once I nose them, I'm going to sip each one fairly quickly to see which flavors that I like.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I want to do it quickly so that each one's in my memory.
- 17:33Speaker 1: But as I do it quickly, I'm going to be even and equal, because I'll take a sip.
- 17:39Speaker 1: I'll take a cracker to uh, I love these little oyster crackers.
- 17:45Speaker 1: They are neutral and they seem to do the trick for me.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So I'm going to basically, um, take a cracker, just set my palate I like to chew them thoroughly and then take a sip of water.
- 18:04Speaker 1: That's what I'll do before each taste.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Now I've got them all set up for everybody on the audio podcast.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Each one's in front of me Um, they've been color coded to match each bottle.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Um, I don't know what's on the bottom of the bottles, so it doesn't matter what the color is on the bottom of the glass, but I will put them in order.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I will nose them and then put them in order, and then, when we're finished with that, once we do, then we'll do the reveal and then we're going to do a, a barrel bash of, uh, old louisville, barrel bash of the green river 1885.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Uh, for walker, uh, not for walker, for, um, aaron, aaron, harris.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So let's get going.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Uh, get this going and, um, we'll go, we'll get on for there.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so here we go.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Number one is red.
- 19:10Speaker 1: All right, there's a little nutty peanut buddy, peanut peanutty flavor on that one.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Two is blue.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'm looking at the viscosity in the glass.
- 19:29Speaker 1: It holds sticks seems to be.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Let's see how it drips back in.
- 19:35Speaker 1: I'll set that down and take a look at same thing here on this.
- 19:45Speaker 1: So I'd say the nose is a little bit better.
- 19:47Speaker 1: On the first one, the red, the nose is weak.
- 19:51Speaker 1: On the blue one.
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'll make sure it's blue, because sometimes those colors all right.
- 19:57Speaker 1: So the third one oh, I, I like that nose.
- 20:01Speaker 1: That's a pretty good nose.
- 20:50Speaker 1: It's got a little bit yellow, it's a little spicy.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I like that one.
- 20:57Speaker 1: I like that nose too.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I think that's great.
- 21:07Speaker 1: This is going to be interesting.
- 21:09Speaker 1: Those two have bets the best.
- 21:11Speaker 1: So when it comes to if you're just nosing right now, that one's good too.
- 21:22Speaker 1: So they would.
- 21:23Speaker 1: They would be.
- 21:25Speaker 1: These last three would all be a tie.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I would.
- 21:28Speaker 1: They're all really good noses.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So if I was rating them out of a four, I would give the noses of those three threes.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I'd give the nose of this first one a two and a one on the nose three.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I picked up all right in the glass once I did it.
- 21:50Speaker 1: All right, so nose-wise, all right.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So we're going to do that reset.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I'll have the cracker Drink the water.
- 22:01Speaker 1: All right, I got to not run out of water, that's for sure.
- 22:09Speaker 1: I have a refill back there.
- 22:11Speaker 1: All right.
- 22:12Speaker 1: So let's for sure I have a refill back there.
- 22:16Speaker 1: All right, so let's drink red.
- 22:21Speaker 2: All right.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I like that, but cracker in Sip of water, all right.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Number two blue.
- 22:54Speaker 1: It's not bad.
- 22:54Speaker 1: All right, cracker in sip of water.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Number three is gray or yellow.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Actually, it's yellow, I like that.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Cracker M Sip of water.
- 23:30Speaker 1: All right.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Here is the gray one.
- 23:39Speaker 1: That is the best one so far.
- 23:41Speaker 1: So we're at.
- 23:45Speaker 1: That was delicious.
- 23:47Speaker 1: That one stood apart.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Cracker in the last one is green and sip.
- 24:15Speaker 1: That was interesting.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Hmm, all right, all right.
- 24:16Speaker 1: So I've got those quickly put up against each other.
- 24:20Speaker 1: So now taste them in reverse.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Let's do it again Green.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I like that one in reverse.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Let's do it again Green.
- 24:35Speaker 1: I like that one.
- 24:43Speaker 1: I'm putting the gray one as number one Right off the bat.
- 24:47Speaker 1: That just set itself apart.
- 24:49Speaker 1: I think I know them, but I'm not supposed to know them.
- 25:20Speaker 1: So I'm going to go with red as my least favorite, but I think I know what it is.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And folks, once again, this isn't the least favorite, but I think I know what it is.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And folks, once again, this isn't the least favorite, it's just the least favorite of these five that I thought were really good under $30 bottles.
- 25:46Speaker 1: We're trying to pick out the best one and I'm blinding it.
- 25:50Speaker 1: So right now, I believe five is red and gray is one.
- 25:59Speaker 1: But when I get to two I will hit one and two again.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I reset my palette.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Let's see Once again.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Let's do this one here.
- 26:14Speaker 1: The green one Really like that one.
- 26:25Speaker 1: It's got a nice sweetness to the whiskey.
- 26:28Speaker 1: All three of these left are bourbons there.
- 26:33Speaker 1: That one's a little oakier than that one's a little oakier than that one, that one's chocolatey, all right.
- 27:04Speaker 1: So I think that tells me what that one is.
- 27:08Speaker 1: So that oak ear one goes.
- 27:13Speaker 1: So we're putting yellow forth.
- 27:20Speaker 1: I have to decide.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Let's see which one I like I gotta go with that.
- 27:43Speaker 1: So green is that blue, that's blue, blue is third and no, blue is third, green is.
- 27:58Speaker 1: So right now I've got gray one, blue two, green three, yellow four and red five, all right.
- 28:16Speaker 1: So now, when you're doing a blind, it's always good to go back and yeah, I, I agree the double oak, I love that, uh, john, and compare one and two.
- 28:34Speaker 1: So I'm gonna do that.
- 28:36Speaker 1: It's like I really believe that is a strong bourbon.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I hope I'm surprised that, that I'm always surprised, but right now I think I know what I'm picking.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, let's see what I can do.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I think, based off this?
- 29:15Speaker 1: I definitely think number one.
- 29:17Speaker 1: So I'm going to make a fool of myself.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I'm not trying.
- 29:22Speaker 1: This is the order that I like them.
- 29:23Speaker 1: But I think one is Makers.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I think two is Chocolaty, because that picks up the Green River.
- 29:30Speaker 1: It's a dark chocolate on there.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I think three is early times.
- 29:34Speaker 1: I think four is Evan Williams and five is Jim Beam, double Oak, and once again, folks.
- 29:44Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Now these are my orders, so I'm going to go backwards, in reverse.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I'm going to go in reverse on this one.
- 29:58Speaker 1: This is kind of funny, right.
- 30:00Speaker 1: So five, red.
- 30:05Speaker 1: So let's see if I was right.
- 30:09Speaker 1: Jim Beam, double Oak.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Uh-oh, she told me the.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Where's the sticker?
- 30:21Speaker 1: There's no sticker on the bottom, all right, is there a sticker on this one?
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, all right.
- 30:29Speaker 1: So no sticker on the bottom?
- 30:33Speaker 1: So okay, so it'll be deduction, deductive reasoning, or did I leave it someplace?
- 30:40Speaker 1: All right?
- 30:40Speaker 1: So Evan Williams is yellow.
- 30:43Speaker 1: So let's see, is that?
- 30:52Speaker 1: Yes, I thought that was double oak, and this is Evan Williams' yellow.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Early times Is gray, oh, so I did Gray.
- 31:00Speaker 1: So number one, folks.
- 31:02Speaker 1: So that just shows you what I think I got.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I think, okay.
- 31:07Speaker 1: So then Blue, which would be second?
- 31:12Speaker 1: And that is blue.
- 31:15Speaker 1: And then, what color is this?
- 31:18Speaker 1: Green is Maker's Mark.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So I got the Evan Williams and the Woodford Double Oak right, but I got Maker's Mark and Early Times mixed up as far as what I thought.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So let's do that.
- 31:34Speaker 1: And so I'm completely surprised.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I, like I said I love this bottle.
- 31:39Speaker 1: This is single most this early times bottled in bond, the single most purchased bottle I've ever done, because I've made so much with this, with mixed drinks.
- 31:50Speaker 1: It just makes great bourbon balls.
- 31:52Speaker 1: It also makes great bourbon balls.
- 31:53Speaker 1: It also makes great wassail and I obviously for under 30.
- 31:58Speaker 1: This one, uh, it won.
- 32:01Speaker 1: So there you go, folks.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Um, as far as it goes, it's like early times was my pick and it kind of set itself apart.
- 32:11Speaker 1: But the green river did a really good job and we're going to, we're going to barrel bash that in a couple seconds.
- 32:17Speaker 1: We'll get to that.
- 32:19Speaker 1: And maker's mark was third as far as coming in, with Evan Williams and Jim beam double O coming in fifth.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But once again, out of the 12 selections, this was one through five and the ones that I liked it was an assortment of all different ones.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I was blinded and, once again, although I got three of the five right and I had one and three mixed up.
- 32:46Speaker 1: That's not too bad as far as recognizing flavors and tastes, but once again I thought I was able to, um, not that when I was tasting these.
- 32:56Speaker 1: That just doesn't with blind.
- 33:06Speaker 1: That's not picking up the caramel that I that I would expect.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Yeah, very interesting results.
- 33:14Speaker 1: But I will say that early times on these four and this bottle is fantastic.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Folks, this bottle of early times is our champion.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Let's see nothing like sipping on cheaper bourbon and smoking even cheaper cigars.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Like sipping on cheaper bourbon and smoking even cheaper cigars.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Paid 23.99 for early 22 for yep, there you go.
- 33:39Speaker 1: The green river I mean you are talking about I is a 22 bottle.
- 33:45Speaker 1: We talk about cheap, under 30.
- 33:48Speaker 1: You're spending 30.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Um, I my mark.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Even when I first started, if I was above 30 bucks I was on the high end of bourbon.
- 34:00Speaker 1: But the good bourbons I mean you can't go wrong with Jim Beam, you can't go wrong with Jack Daniels, and those have always been 1899.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I mean, when Jack Daniels was 1999, in 1986, it was a top shelf and now it's still 1899 or 1999.
- 34:24Speaker 1: And it's just crazy that it's held its price so well in a market that has exploded with expensive bourbon.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Now we can talk about all you want for $30.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I mean, I'm going to put early times up against higher-end bourbons.
- 34:44Speaker 1: That's what I wanted to do with this $30.
- 34:46Speaker 1: We're going to go up and we're going to go under $50.
- 34:50Speaker 1: We're going to go under $80, and we're going to go under $100.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And then, from those categories as we're going to go under 50, we're going to go under 80, and we're going to go under 100.
- 34:53Speaker 1: And then, from those categories, as we keep going and hopefully we'll have some of the other members on as we do this we can come up with a group setting of whatever.
- 35:04Speaker 1: As we do this on a price comparison, then, once we have the categories, each category winner and this is the first one Early Times, bottled and Bond will blind them up against each other and see what happens, because blind just takes away everything.
- 35:21Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what the price is in a blind it doesn't matter, it's just purely what you like.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And so that's where we're going to go with that.
- 35:29Speaker 1: But right now we're going to go on to our next segment.
- 35:33Speaker 1: That's brought to you by Old Louisville Whiskey Company.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Amin there does a great job.
- 35:40Speaker 1: His tours, his tastings I mean, you're tasting.
- 35:43Speaker 1: You taste right from the bottle I mean the barrel and if you like it you also can bottle your own.
- 35:50Speaker 1: It's not quite the same as Whiskey Thief.
- 35:54Speaker 1: His warehouse is different and he basically is not.
- 36:01Speaker 1: He is an NDA, but his palate and his background in coming from the retail spirits industry and then coming into this is kind of fantastic.
- 36:15Speaker 1: You get a one-of-a-kind, one-on-one experience with the mean when you go there.
- 36:21Speaker 1: I strongly suggest that you check out Old Louisville and they're a sponsor of our barrel bashing, sponsor of our barrel bashing.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Our barrel bashing is unlike, uh, the, the tasting that we're doing.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Where we're doing, you know fours and fives and whatever, um, what what it is is, I basically will bash my barrel.
- 36:45Speaker 1: That's right here.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Uh, I bested before it sounds, sounds pretty close.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I've got to make sure I don't knock off all my stuff that's on top of it.
- 36:55Speaker 1: But it's a rating system based on nose, body, taste and finish.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Each category has its own reason for.
- 37:11Speaker 1: But in the category of nose and body, I could give it four barrel bashes.
- 37:17Speaker 1: In the categories of taste and finish, I could give it five barrel bashes.
- 37:22Speaker 1: And if there is one part of what I'm tasting, smelling or finishing or the body.
- 37:31Speaker 1: That's exceptional.
- 37:32Speaker 1: You can give it a butt up up.
- 37:34Speaker 1: So this is Aaron Harris' newest release, 1885 Green River Bourbon.
- 37:42Speaker 1: It's bourbon for the everyday bourbon drinker and when he introduced it it's a damn good one.
- 37:53Speaker 1: I think it's like I said, it actually took just now second place.
- 37:58Speaker 1: It's not the same flavor palette that the other ones that we were tasting.
- 38:05Speaker 1: I could tell it has a nice dark chocolate back palate finish to it, very unique for bourbon.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I'm going to get my set with a cracker.
- 38:21Speaker 1: I'm going to refill my water glass because drinking water while doing bourbon tasting is very important.
- 38:26Speaker 1: All right, so if I'm not mistaken, I won't mess up, it's blue gray.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Once again, early times was our number one and there is my blue glass so I could pour not much more.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I don't want that much more.
- 38:48Speaker 1: So here we go, there we go, y'all having fun.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Okay, did you get a mango spice like, almost like a pumpkin note?
- 39:16Speaker 1: So you could, I could see where you're getting that, but mine more like it's like pumpkin spice latte.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I feel like this is the most awesome fire bourbon.
- 39:28Speaker 1: It adds so much flavor to the wassail.
- 39:32Speaker 1: It adds so much flavor to the bourbon balls.
- 39:33Speaker 1: It's got the bourbon taste adds so much flavor to the wassail.
- 39:33Speaker 1: It adds so much flavor to the, the bourbon balls.
- 39:35Speaker 1: It's got the bourbon taste, jamie, but it definitely the early times bottled in bond, has a very, very it's.
- 39:45Speaker 1: It's got a super body.
- 39:47Speaker 1: When you drink it at 100 proof it drinks like a barrel proof.
- 39:52Speaker 1: I mean it basically surrounds as far as body.
- 39:57Speaker 1: I'm not talking about the flavor is perfect for me.
- 40:00Speaker 1: I mean, this is my wheelhouse.
- 40:02Speaker 1: I think I've purchased nine bottles of this and that's the most I've ever purchased of anything.
- 40:11Speaker 1: I have other brands or whatever, but I don't think I've purchased nine bottles of the same thing.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I mean, if you want to go to Yellowstone, I probably have 14 different versions of Yellowstone.
- 40:23Speaker 1: I'm not talking about single barrels, I'm just talking about the same one over and over and over.
- 40:29Speaker 1: So, yeah, I could see how you could get that.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Let's see, yeah, nut, I could see how you could get that.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Let's see, yeah, nutmeg and Pumpkin Spice.
- 40:36Speaker 1: That's what John Ritt sang and that's what I mean.
- 40:39Speaker 1: That is a favorite of mine, that's for sure.
- 40:45Speaker 1: He picked barrels and his aging he is a veteran store owner and really loves whiskey and started his own company.
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah, amin's great, that's super.
- 40:58Speaker 1: He's got his still going.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Yes, he does.
- 41:02Speaker 1: That is one thing that's going to be very unique now that he's got that going.
- 41:06Speaker 1: So I've got this Green River 1885.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Was very impressed at Kentucky Bourbon Festival when we got to do it.
- 41:16Speaker 1: So I know that CT likes it.
- 41:20Speaker 1: He got it.
- 41:20Speaker 1: He's excited about it.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I think he's sad he wasn't able to make it tonight.
- 41:24Speaker 1: But here goes, we'll do the barrel bashing like a system and here we go.
- 41:32Speaker 1: For a nose.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It's got a fruity spice.
- 41:36Speaker 1: I'm not an I don't know what is.
- 41:47Speaker 1: It's an apple spice.
- 41:49Speaker 1: I want to say it's an apple spice on the nose.
- 41:50Speaker 1: It's an apple spice.
- 41:51Speaker 1: I want to say it's an apple spice on the nose.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's that fresh bit like that apple flavor.
- 42:00Speaker 1: My dominant nostril for the last like six months has been my left one.
- 42:04Speaker 1: Usually it would change, but it's definitely an apple spice.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Now, this is 85 proof, if I'm not mistaken, because it's, uh, 1885 at 85 proof.
- 42:23Speaker 1: And and let's see, I'm going to throw on the glasses tonight, here we go, uh, let's see.
- 42:30Speaker 1: So here we go.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I'll give you a little bit.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Um, green river distillery used to be the ozzy tyler distillery until it was purchased and they definitely green river has done a really nice job.
- 42:45Speaker 1: It's like make mine and 85, 1885, 42, it yep, it's 85, um proof and um, let's see, do we got anything on here to read?
- 43:01Speaker 1: Okay, here this is a legacy revived.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Founded by john w mccullish in 1885 as kentucky's 10th oldest distillery, green River was celebrated for quality and became known as the whiskey without regrets, before being lost to history after prohibition.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Green River 1885 bourbon is unique mash bill, aged for four years and selected for its brightness and balance.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Enjoy, neat or in your favorite cocktail, and I would say it would do good in cocktails similar, um more so, where the spicy one adds like that.
- 43:44Speaker 1: This adds a like.
- 43:45Speaker 1: It would be a cocktail that like uh, this would be cool to do a chocotini.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Instead of making it with vodka, you'd use this Green River bourbon, the dark chocolate notes on this are great, all right.
- 44:09Speaker 1: So the nose?
- 44:10Speaker 1: If I was giving this a nose, and this initially was in there, so I will have to say that the nose is a three.
- 44:19Speaker 1: I already gave it that.
- 44:20Speaker 1: So here we go.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Three on the nose, all right.
- 44:27Speaker 1: So what do we got next?
- 44:29Speaker 1: We've got the body.
- 44:33Speaker 1: Let's see what happens as it spins around in the glass and goes down.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Oh really, nice legs.
- 44:39Speaker 1: I would say the body on the legs is a three.
- 44:44Speaker 1: But let's see what it does.
- 44:45Speaker 1: I think it's a three also.
- 44:55Speaker 1: It doesn't hit my cheeks but the flavor is pretty much proof of your mouth underneath your tongue.
- 45:06Speaker 1: I've got to see what happens on the front of the palate because I'm not getting a front palate.
- 45:10Speaker 1: Wow, that is an interesting bourbon I'm enjoying.
- 45:26Speaker 1: That Front palate is sweet Confectionary.
- 45:32Speaker 1: It's just confectionary.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Maybe frosting, it's nondescript sugar.
- 45:39Speaker 1: How about that?
- 45:41Speaker 1: I've never said that before.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I would have to say, as far as body, I will give that a three also.
- 45:49Speaker 1: I will give that a three also.
- 45:55Speaker 1: Now, at 85 proof and right around 20 bucks or under, I think we were talking at under $20.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Let's see, did we have somebody tell us what it was?
- 46:13Speaker 1: I think someone did.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Let's see.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Was it Thomas?
- 46:21Speaker 1: $22.99 for the Green River.
- 46:25Speaker 1: I'm clearing it All.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Right, that brings us to taste.
- 46:32Speaker 1: I mean it was number two on my list.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I like this taste.
- 46:43Speaker 1: I don't know when the chocolate Does the chocolate.
- 46:47Speaker 1: I can't determine when that chocolate comes out.
- 46:56Speaker 1: I will give this, on the taste, a 4 out of 5.
- 47:07Speaker 1: The reason why I give it 4 out of 5 is because I really believe I'll give it.
- 47:21Speaker 1: The back palate is the chocolate.
- 47:23Speaker 1: But the surprise of this bourbon here, of all the bourbons, three, three, four.
- 47:36Speaker 1: So we're at 7-Eleven.
- 47:43Speaker 1: I have to give, normally, when you're talking about a $22 bourbon, you don't have a finish that lasts forever.
- 47:50Speaker 1: I mean, if I had to judge this as a $22 bourbon, I would basically, if you were judging this, the scale is based off of all bourbons, so I can't give it a five on the finish and it's really tough.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I like the taste of it and there's a complexity because it.
- 48:19Speaker 1: That's why it holds its own as a taste.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I would say this is the longest finish on a $22 bourbon I've ever had, that's for sure.
- 48:34Speaker 1: 100%, I don't know.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Apple cobbler with cinnamon spice flavor.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Are you talking about now, john?
- 48:48Speaker 1: Are you talking about the Green River?
- 48:54Speaker 1: Are you talking about the early times?
- 48:58Speaker 1: That I would like to know.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Um, but the green river, the, the dark chocolate finish lasts a decent amount of time, there's no doubt about it.
- 49:12Speaker 1: No doubt about it.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Um, I will give it a four also.
- 49:22Speaker 1: I will give it a four also.
- 49:27Speaker 1: So that's two threes and two fours, which is eight plus six is 14 of 18 on a $22 bottle.
- 49:36Speaker 1: So not that I just this this, what this?
- 49:47Speaker 1: Basically?
- 49:48Speaker 1: Um, basically, what would you say?
- 49:49Speaker 1: What this comes across as is a testament of the staff and team that Aaron Harris has at the Green River Distillery.
- 50:01Speaker 1: It proves that if people who know what they're doing with whiskey all I can say is there's paths for whiskey, if it's distilled properly, to be able to go I mean sometimes, even if it's not distilled completely properly or the best of ways you can put it down a path as a distiller with barrel finishes sometimes.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Or I mean, if you look at what Greg Schneider did with Chicken Cock Double Oak, he picked up, he did the reverse process.
- 50:50Speaker 1: They purchased whiskey that had to be bourbon, that had to be put in used barrels because there was a barrel shortage, and then got that whiskey aged, felt that in the used barrels the bourbon didn't express itself to where it should should have, and then he took it and put it in new bourbon charred oak barrels for a period of time, double oaking it in the reverse process most bourbons that have been double oaked were bourbons and then put in another barrel.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Whether it be you would what it can't be used to be a bourbon.
- 51:36Speaker 1: But and the same thing with the chicken cock double oak it's not actually a bourbon because it was in a used barrel initially, but he put it in that new charred oak barrel.
- 51:47Speaker 1: So, hey, steve, good to see you, thanks for chiming in.
- 51:52Speaker 1: So that was really quite phenomenal what he did.
- 51:59Speaker 1: And it's the same thing.
- 52:01Speaker 1: You can have a whiskey stock.
- 52:02Speaker 1: Some of it can be good, some of it can make, but you can always do certain things, I mean, and if you have a really good palate, you can decide what to do with it.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I mean, in my opinion there are some.
- 52:17Speaker 1: There would be like, if I was tasting barrels and going through a stock, there would be some barrels that probably would lean to a port finish, or there'd some be barrels that would lean to a rum finish, or there'd some barrels that would lean towards an Orla Rosso finish, an Armagnac finish.
- 52:43Speaker 1: I mean, even some barrels can lean to the.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Why am I having a mental block of the finish that everybody that I believe I have?
- 53:01Speaker 1: It's sitting right back here.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Do I not arm and neck?
- 53:09Speaker 1: Um, but um, um.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Why am I having a mental block?
- 53:17Speaker 1: I love mental blocks, that's for sure.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, come on, barry rd1.
- 53:21Speaker 1: I love mental blocks, that's for sure.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Oh yeah, come on, barry RD-1 with.
- 53:28Speaker 1: I'm even looking at up above right there is the chain of the finish, but somehow my brain has gone south.
- 53:41Speaker 1: There's the RD-1.
- 53:42Speaker 1: And I'm going to pull it up and I'm gonna amber an amber rosa finish.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Why I couldn't remember that, I don't't know.
- 54:01Speaker 1: But the Ambarosa finish is very, in my opinion, syrup and cinnamon finished.
- 54:10Speaker 1: You walk in, you have those barrels that someone's purchased, just sitting there.
- 54:16Speaker 1: It infiltrates you.
- 54:18Speaker 1: It is a very strong, strong finish.
- 54:20Speaker 1: But I'm sure there's different bourbons that would lean to.
- 54:25Speaker 1: You know that while you're picking your supply, I mean, as that barrel ages, that bourbon, it's so many different flavors and tastes.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I mean the classic is all the uh, private selects from maker's market, all those different combinations of staves being dropped in and all those different flavors that come out.
- 54:45Speaker 1: It's just amazing.
- 54:46Speaker 1: So you know it's kind of cool overall, but I'll give it a.
- 54:54Speaker 1: You know a French oak?
- 54:57Speaker 1: Yeah, french oak finish is fantastic.
- 55:00Speaker 1: You know how much I love French oak finish.
- 55:02Speaker 1: Yeah, french oak finish is fantastic.
- 55:04Speaker 1: You know how much I love French oak finish.
- 55:09Speaker 1: My two favorite bourbons when it comes to finishing are French oak, which doesn't always change it.
- 55:13Speaker 1: If you're putting in a brand new French oak charred oak barrel, it doesn't have to change that it's not bourbon.
- 55:18Speaker 1: And the same thing with double oaking.
- 55:24Speaker 1: If you're putting in another new American oak barrel, that's great.
- 55:29Speaker 1: Or if you're dropping new American oak charred staves in there or toasted staves.
- 55:34Speaker 1: There's a lot of things where the rules have done what the rules are going to do, so that's fine.
- 55:41Speaker 1: So what I'm going to do, I'm not going to end it on Facebook and YouTube, but we got to.
- 55:45Speaker 1: We got to get going right now on the podcast.
- 55:51Speaker 1: So I want to just get ready for this because I am ready.
