- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your back row
- 0:01dom, it's your GM who currently is not on the
- 0:03team right now, but don't you worry about it,
- 0:05Kale, here to bring you episode 6 of the Stack
- 0:08and Shed series. Now in this series, we're covering
- 0:10all 32 teams, so nobody is neglected, everybody
- 0:13gets a turn, okay? Now in this series, we're
- 0:17covering a few different topics, and those topics
- 0:19include what went wrong, what do they need, Stack
- 0:23or Shed, their draft picks, one move I would
- 0:26do in their cap space. Now, in this episode,
- 0:29we're covering the Falcons. So buckle up. It's
- 0:31going to be a little bit crazy, but we're going
- 0:33to get through it. So let's lock in. All right,
- 0:42let's get into it. So what went wrong in the
- 0:44Falcons season? And I would venture to say it
- 0:46was a lack of quarterback stability. Going into
- 0:49last season, we knew that Kirk Cousins had become
- 0:51frustrated with the organization, and we also
- 0:53knew that there was mounting pressure for Michael
- 0:55Penix to start. Now, I don't believe that if
- 0:58Kirk Cousins or Michael Penix became the week
- 1:00one starter, that it would have changed the outcome
- 1:02of the season. Because at the end of the day,
- 1:04the Falcons are still far away from being contenders.
- 1:07Now, according to NFL Pro, in the nine games
- 1:10that Michael Penix started, He was 276 attempts
- 1:14for 166 completions, 1 ,982 passing yards, nine
- 1:19touchdowns, three interceptions, 7 .2 yards per
- 1:23attempt, and a 60 .1 completion percentage. In
- 1:25the 10 games that Kirk Cousins played, He was
- 1:28269 attempts for 166 completions, 1 ,721 passing
- 1:34yards, 10 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 6 .4 yards
- 1:38per attempt, a 61 .7 completion percentage. Now
- 1:40ask yourself this. Do you believe that the Falcons
- 1:43offense played better under Michael Penix or
- 1:46Kirk Cousins? Somebody let me know under the
- 1:48comments on our YouTube page at Football Junkies
- 1:50Pod. Because, honestly speaking, neither one
- 1:54of them played significantly better than the
- 1:56other. Now, I know someone's rebuttal is, well,
- 1:58Kurt Cobanks and Kyle Pitts was cooking the Buccaneers
- 2:01defense on that Thursday night game. They were
- 2:04dipping and dying all over the field, and the
- 2:06Buccaneers defense didn't have the answer for
- 2:08it. Kurt Cousins can do no wrong in my eyes.
- 2:12Now, with that being said, what do the Falcons
- 2:14need? And that is more patience from ownership.
- 2:17Better decision making on building the roster
- 2:18and stability at quarterback. Now I understand
- 2:21that Arthur Blank wants to experience winning
- 2:23football again. And I understand that he wants
- 2:26to experience being in the Super Bowl again.
- 2:28But he needs to be honest with himself. You still
- 2:31have a question mark at quarterback. You still
- 2:33need to figure out what you're going to do at
- 2:35other positions on this team. And you need to
- 2:38figure out if Kevin Stefanski is the guy. So
- 2:41when you factor all these things in, you need
- 2:44to be a little bit more patient. Now, am I saying
- 2:47that Raheem Morris was going to be the answer
- 2:49to all of their troubles? No. But I think Raheem
- 2:52Morris showed enough towards the second half
- 2:54of the season where you can say, you know what,
- 2:55let's run it back one more time. And if you ran
- 2:58it back one more time and you had the same outcome
- 3:00that you just had this past season, then get
- 3:02rid of him. But you can't just say, we want to
- 3:04be competitive, we want to win a championship,
- 3:07but you're continuing to fire head coaches in
- 3:09less than three years. At some point, you have
- 3:12to give these coaches a chance. This stuff takes
- 3:15time, and it also doesn't help when you continue
- 3:17to make dumb decisions when it comes to this
- 3:20roster. And since we're talking about the roster,
- 3:22let's talk about the former GM. How is it that
- 3:25he was able to give a $100 million contract to
- 3:27Kirk Cousins, who's coming off a torn Achilles,
- 3:30draft Michael Penix with the eighth pick in that
- 3:32draft class, and then retrade back into the first
- 3:35round to draft James Pierce, who's no longer
- 3:38going to be able to play in the league again?
- 3:40Those are the type of decisions that push your
- 3:42team back by years but you wouldn't know that
- 3:45because all you're looking at is the play on
- 3:47the field and not looking at the roster construction
- 3:50the roster construction is just as important
- 3:53as what you see on the field but you wouldn't
- 3:55realize that because you're so focused on winning
- 3:58and the way that you're going about trying to
- 4:00win is the wrong way As I've said before in multiple
- 4:04episodes, every single chance that I get, the
- 4:07only way that you can truly be competitive and
- 4:10win a championship is if you hit on your draft
- 4:13picks and you have an infrastructure of success.
- 4:17If you don't have those two things in play, you're
- 4:19not going to be successful. I don't care what
- 4:22receiver you have. I don't care what running
- 4:24back you have. I don't care what offensive lineman
- 4:26you have. It won't work. And that's been a problem
- 4:29with the Falcons for a very long time. Now, stability
- 4:33at quarterback is a little bit tricky, and here's
- 4:35why. We all know that Michael Penix is still
- 4:37recovering from injury, and we know he won't
- 4:39be able to hit the field anytime soon. We also
- 4:41know that Kirk Cousins is going to be released
- 4:43at the start of the new league year, find a bridge
- 4:47quarterback for the time being. Now, the question
- 4:49is this. If you're the Falcons, even though you
- 4:52don't have a lot of draft picks, do you at least
- 4:54take a swing on someone like a Kay Klubnick,
- 4:56a Garrett Nussmeyer, a Drew Aller? Because at
- 4:59this point, you won't have an answer to this
- 5:01problem until Michael Penix gets healthy and
- 5:03you figure out what you're going to do at quarterback
- 5:05long term. Now, with that being said, the question
- 5:08we all need to ask ourselves is stack or shed?
- 5:10And I would venture to say stack. And the reason
- 5:12why I say this is because there's no need for
- 5:14you to shred what you have right now. Instead,
- 5:17you need to learn from your mistakes move forward,
- 5:19and create a realistic plan on how you're going
- 5:22to change things around. Now, if that means that
- 5:24you have to trade away somebody, okay, fine,
- 5:26do it. If it means that you have to cut somebody,
- 5:28hey, oh, well, it's a business. And let's be
- 5:31honest here. The Falcons are operating in a cycle
- 5:34of insanity, hoping for a different outcome,
- 5:36and it's not going to happen. Now, the only way
- 5:38they can break out of this cycle is by admitting
- 5:41that their current approach to the game of football
- 5:43is outdated and unsuccessful. Now, when we look
- 5:45at their draft picks, they have their second,
- 5:47their third, their fourth, their sixth, and seventh.
- 5:50Now, what I'm about to say is very controversial,
- 5:52but just hear me out. I think the Falcons have
- 5:54a chance to sneak into the first round. And the
- 5:56reason why I say this because this draft class
- 5:59doesn't have a lot of blue chip talent, right?
- 6:01It is talented, but it doesn't have that type
- 6:03of talent that we've seen in previous draft classes,
- 6:06which means that a lot of teams are probably
- 6:08going to trade down or just trade out of the
- 6:10first round altogether. I believe that the second
- 6:13and third round is the sweet spot in this draft
- 6:16class. And I believe there's going to be a lot
- 6:18of high quality players that everybody wants
- 6:21that's going to be in those drafts. draft classes.
- 6:23So if you're the Falcons, could you possibly
- 6:25entertain the idea of maybe trading into the
- 6:28first round? Now you may have to give up a player
- 6:30or you may have to tap into the 27 draft stock,
- 6:33but you're going to have to do something. However,
- 6:36if you feel like the draft board is working in
- 6:38your favor, then just stay put. But remember
- 6:40this, when it's time for you to submit your pick.
- 6:44Please, please, please, please, please make sure
- 6:46you make the right pick. Do not do anything stupid
- 6:50because I promise you, if you do something stupid,
- 6:53you're going to lose the fan base, which I mean,
- 6:55you've already lost the fan base right now. But
- 6:57you know what? That's another story for another
- 6:59day. All right. Now, the one move that I would
- 7:01do is sign a veteran bridge quarterback, specifically
- 7:04somebody that has worked with Kevin Stefanski.
- 7:06Now, the first person that comes to mind is Joe
- 7:09Flacco. But hear me out for a moment, and I know
- 7:11this is going to contradict everything I just
- 7:13said. What if you can try to smooth things out
- 7:16with Kirk Cousins? Hear me out. If you're the
- 7:18Falcons, if you're Kevin Stefanski, what would
- 7:21it take for Kirk Cousins to stay with the Falcons?
- 7:24Because I don't believe the relationship is just
- 7:26burned all the way. I do believe you can work
- 7:29through it. But the only way that you can work
- 7:31through it is if you put everybody in the room
- 7:33and you hash it out. I think if you run it back
- 7:36with Kirk Cousins just one more year, I think
- 7:39that's good enough. Because right now, outside
- 7:41of Joe Flacco, there's no other good options
- 7:43available. Are you going to pay 30 plus million
- 7:46for Malik Willis? No. Are you going to trade
- 7:48for Tua? No. Are you going to trade for Kyle
- 7:50Murray? No. So then what are you going to do
- 7:52at quarterback? Now, if you're Kirk Cousins,
- 7:55you probably have a thousand and one reasons
- 7:56on why you want to leave the Falcons. But just
- 7:59here. me out. You had success with Kevin Stefanski.
- 8:02You know that if you don't go to the Vikings,
- 8:04you're not going to be successful anywhere else.
- 8:06Even if it means you have to take a reduced salary.
- 8:09Do it. Because at this point, if you go anywhere
- 8:12else, they're going to treat you like a bridge
- 8:13quarterback. No one is going to commit to you
- 8:16long term. When we look at the Falcons cap situation,
- 8:19they have 30 .6 million, which isn't bad, but
- 8:21they can create more if they restructure some
- 8:23deals, cut a few people, trade away some people,
- 8:25you know, the same generic business stuff that
- 8:28every single team does, right? Now, do I expect
- 8:30the Falcons to be big players in free agency?
- 8:32No. I think at best, they'll probably be really
- 8:35active in that second and third wave free agency.
- 8:38However, I do expect the Falcons to try to re
- 8:40-sign some of their players, such as Drake London,
- 8:42Kyle Pitts, and maybe some players on the defensive
- 8:45side. But I'm going to end this episode here.
