- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Lucas Voss with Becker's
- 0:02Healthcare. Thanks so much for tuning in to
- 0:04the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. Fantastic to have
- 0:07you all. And an exciting topic today, very
- 0:09top of mind for a lot of folks,
- 0:11AIROI.
- 0:13What early adopters are measuring and why
- 0:16it matters.
- 0:17And I'm even more excited to be joined
- 0:19by Alex Lebrun. He's the cofounder and CEO
- 0:22of Nava. Alex, it's so great to have
- 0:24you. Thanks for being here.
- 0:26Hi, Lucas, and thanks very much for having
- 0:28me today. Yeah. Absolutely. I do wanna start
- 0:30off with introductions for those that might not
- 0:32know you yet.
- 0:34Could you just share a little bit about
- 0:35yourself and and your work in health care?
- 0:38Yeah. I'm Alex Lebrun, cofounder and CEO of
- 0:41Nabla.
- 0:42I started Nabla seven years ago.
- 0:45Our our goal has always been to build
- 0:47an AI assistant for for clinician,
- 0:50particularly to to help them to get rid
- 0:52of the the part of their jobs they
- 0:54don't like and whereas they are wasting a
- 0:56lot of time. So the
- 0:58administrative stuff,
- 0:59paperwork.
- 1:02So, yeah, we've been, working on that at
- 1:04Nava for, many years now,
- 1:07reaching today about, 85,000
- 1:09clinicians,
- 1:11millions of, encounters every month. And we have
- 1:13a very ambitious plan to do more and
- 1:15more for our clinicians, as we move forward.
- 1:19I recently had the pleasure to to listen
- 1:21to you at our Becker CEO and CFO
- 1:23roundtable where you're part of a panel.
- 1:26And the discussion really centered around how early
- 1:29AI adopters like UNC Health, Penn Medicine are
- 1:32are defining and measuring ROI right now.
- 1:35When you look back at that conversation,
- 1:38what surprised you most as you were listening
- 1:41to your peers and the conversation itself? And
- 1:43and on the other hand too, what validated
- 1:46what you were seeing and what's happening right
- 1:48now?
- 1:49Yeah. So so what's
- 1:52surprising and amazing is that we really
- 1:55are starting a new phase. Until recently, we
- 1:58were, I think, in phase one of AI
- 2:00deployment in health care
- 2:02where we didn't have hard ROI. It was,
- 2:05like, soft ROI.
- 2:07So making physicians happier, less
- 2:10burnout,
- 2:11less pajama time.
- 2:13People are really happy to use AI.
- 2:16It has an impact. But if you are
- 2:18cynical, you could say, Hey, the CFO didn't
- 2:21see the impact
- 2:22on their
- 2:23numbers.
- 2:24And this was phase one. And I think
- 2:27with more maturity in the field and also
- 2:30with with bigger projects, you know, more investments,
- 2:33now,
- 2:35we are starting phase two where we need
- 2:37to have
- 2:38very, very strong
- 2:39financial ROI when we deploy AI. And it
- 2:43was really,
- 2:44obvious when you listen to the panel, to
- 2:46to my
- 2:47partners of the panel, that they are now
- 2:50we are measuring
- 2:51very, very precise
- 2:53ROI,
- 2:54and it's, it's new, actually. It was not
- 2:56like that just, six months ago.
- 2:59Yeah. We talk so much about the transition
- 3:02from pilot to scalability. Right? Organizations now scaling
- 3:06these initiatives across organizations and obviously measuring ROI
- 3:09around them. And there's so many
- 3:12there's so much of a range for ROI
- 3:14priorities right now. Like, mission alignment,
- 3:17administrative burden is certainly one that's top of
- 3:19mind for a lot of people. Patient trust,
- 3:21a lots of different priorities.
- 3:23From your perspective,
- 3:25what are some of the measures, one, two,
- 3:27or three, that health systems should be prioritizing
- 3:30right now and why?
- 3:33So
- 3:33in my field, you know, in our field,
- 3:35the most impact is the most obvious is
- 3:37the impact the tool has on claims, you
- 3:40know, on on revenues.
- 3:41So and in terms of for new for
- 3:42a new cycle management, you really see
- 3:45how,
- 3:47many clinicians
- 3:48are actually done coding,
- 3:50because they are afraid of audits. They are
- 3:53they're not sure about something, so they tend
- 3:55to miss a lot of
- 3:57of things they should do.
- 3:59And you can really measure the impact of
- 4:01having this AI assistant helping
- 4:03the clinician to code as they are supposed
- 4:05to code, which results
- 4:08in in in, you know, revenues direct directly
- 4:09to revenues, translated to revenues.
- 4:12So this is,
- 4:13and this is why in our in our
- 4:15field, most MBN AI companies are moving fast
- 4:18into,
- 4:19into coding and RCM because this is a
- 4:21very, very strong
- 4:22immediate,
- 4:23easy to measure,
- 4:25kind of ROI.
- 4:27When you think and I agree with the
- 4:29RCM piece. I think that's a lot of
- 4:30conversation that's happening right now. We saw it
- 4:32at the conference too, at the roundtables. A
- 4:34lot of it was RCM focused. When you
- 4:36think about the the partners that were some
- 4:37of your partners that were at,
- 4:39in Chicago there at the roundtable,
- 4:42Can you share some of the examples
- 4:44of health systems that sort of got measurement
- 4:46right of, like, thinking about, okay, this is
- 4:49how we measure ROI, and how did their
- 4:51approach
- 4:52influence also leadership buy in and how these
- 4:56initiatives then scale across organizations?
- 5:00So that's a good question. I cannot speak
- 5:01for them,
- 5:03and I don't remember the the exact,
- 5:06results.
- 5:07And it's it's very new also. I think
- 5:09we should also not exaggerate too much that,
- 5:12okay, we've been doing that for two years
- 5:14and it's we have these numbers.
- 5:16I think I can say, that a few
- 5:18months ago, no no one was measuring this
- 5:20kind of ROI.
- 5:21And we just started to set up the
- 5:23right metrics
- 5:25and KPIs
- 5:27to see, how AI impacts revenues, for instance.
- 5:30So I think the methodologies we've converged
- 5:33to are are good,
- 5:35and we can we should, you know, see
- 5:37you know, meet again in six months and
- 5:39see the actual,
- 5:41what was actually measured. I think it's still
- 5:43early. We should we should be humble.
- 5:45It's still still very,
- 5:47early, but it's definitely
- 5:49the the trend to go there is, I
- 5:51think I think we see at the stake.
- 5:54Yeah. Turning this around, though, to to the
- 5:57leadership piece, because I think, again, change management
- 5:59when we talk about technology and AI is
- 6:01so key because people have to understand that
- 6:03they have to know the benefits that it
- 6:05brings. Right?
- 6:07As we're looking ahead, how would you like
- 6:09to see health care leaders' conversations about AI
- 6:13ROI evolve in in the next couple of
- 6:16years, and what are some of those opportunities
- 6:18that you are excited about?
- 6:20Yes. I think,
- 6:23for an AI tool,
- 6:24if you live in a in a silo,
- 6:26you know, in a in a sandbox disconnected
- 6:28from the rest of the workflows, it's very
- 6:30hard to have a strong ROI. That's why
- 6:33what we do is so difficult.
- 6:35What's exciting now is that
- 6:37as we have more coverage with AI, so
- 6:40there are still point solutions,
- 6:42but we are I think things are in
- 6:44the process to, maybe
- 6:47consolidate, and we'll we'll see more and more,
- 6:49like, end to end solutions built on AI.
- 6:52And once you have an end to end
- 6:54solution going, you know, from
- 6:56the precharting
- 6:57all the way to,
- 6:59reimburse claim and everything is powered by AI,
- 7:02then measuring very strong ROI is is easy
- 7:05because you can follow okay. I did something
- 7:07at the pre pre
- 7:09encounter stage, very, very early stage. But because
- 7:12I see all the process, I can prove
- 7:15that, like, it actually had an impact
- 7:17two months later on revenue connection.
- 7:20You see what I mean? So it's we
- 7:22are excited because this kind of ambition to
- 7:25have an end to end process workflow
- 7:27managed by AI was impossible to even imagine
- 7:31a year ago.
- 7:32And with all the progress we have with,
- 7:34like, agentic approach where
- 7:37we are not afraid to do,
- 7:39to do more automation and to connect different
- 7:42tools together,
- 7:43then we will, quickly,
- 7:45reach this kind of end to end
- 7:47deployments. And for for this,
- 7:50our eye will be so obvious that,
- 7:52you know, metrics will be very, very obvious.
- 7:55So I'm personally quite excited by this,
- 7:58perspective.
- 8:00Well, and what you just mentioned too is
- 8:01so important
- 8:03for scalability,
- 8:04especially as we think about larger organizations,
- 8:07multiple locations, all of that, all of these
- 8:09different components. It's such a key to be
- 8:11able to to to scale these initiatives,
- 8:14for organizations, which is awesome. Alex, it's so
- 8:17great to have you on. I I do
- 8:19wanna leave you
- 8:20with the with the floor for for the
- 8:22final
- 8:27audience?
- 8:29No. Generally, I think people should be aware
- 8:31that it's just the beginning.
- 8:33We should be very excited because this is
- 8:35a beginning, like like, if we were talking
- 8:36Internet in, '97,
- 8:38maybe. So it's not perfect. Many things are
- 8:41still, in progress.
- 8:43And we love, you know, working with partners
- 8:46and customers who really realize that
- 8:49it's not an off the shelf thing that
- 8:51they have to take or not. It's something,
- 8:52you know, we are they have a very
- 8:54strong impact
- 8:56on modeling, on on developing.
- 8:58And I really like to say it's a
- 9:001%
- 9:01journey done as the journey is done.
- 9:04And we shouldn't the discussion we have shouldn't
- 9:07be, should we use AI or not for
- 9:08this is
- 9:09how should we can we rethink this workflow
- 9:13given the new tools we have and the
- 9:15new powers we have with AI? So this
- 9:17is this mindset, I think we
- 9:19great people have in our, industries.
- 9:22Absolutely. Alex, it's so great to have you.
- 9:24Thanks for your time and insights today. Thank
- 9:26you very much, Lucas.
