- 0:00Speaker 1: Seven years after serving a manslaughter sentence, a newly released
- 0:04Speaker 1: man sees the person he believed dead walking freely through
- 0:08Speaker 1: the city. It is the premise of Suspense, Deep into Darkness,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Episode 2, dated July 2nd, 1948. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. stars
- 0:20Speaker 1: as Ken Matthews with Joseph Kearns and Lorene Tuttle. Edward
- 0:25Speaker 1: James wrote the script and Anton M. Leder directed and produced.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The sight of that living man brings Matthews face to
- 0:33Speaker 1: face with his past, and with the question of whether
- 0:37Speaker 1: a man may be tried twice for the same offense.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And now, we return to the original broadcast.
- 0:45Speaker 2: In just a moment, Suspense, starring Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Now, let's stop in at Ed Jones for a moment,
- 0:53Speaker 3: will you?
- 0:53Speaker 4: Okay, Dad.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Hello, Ed.
- 0:57Speaker 3: How's the world's greatest ignition service station tonight?
- 1:00Speaker 5: I have.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Hi, Billy.
- 1:01Speaker 6: Hi.
- 1:01Speaker 7: I'm busy on a couple of cranky ignition jobs. Say,
- 1:04Speaker 7: how's the car running?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Never better. Take a look.
- 1:06Speaker 8: Sure.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Glad to.
- 1:07Speaker 8: Hey, Dad, Ed's got his radio on.
- 1:09Speaker 9: Is it the auto light show?
- 1:11Speaker 4: That's it, Billy.
- 1:12Speaker 8: Suspense is my Thursday night special.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Ignition systems, spark plugs, batteries. Ed, you've got everyone in
- 1:18Speaker 3: town switching to auto light.
- 1:20Speaker 7: Billy, your dad's trying to take over the auto light
- 1:22Speaker 7: announcer's chore.
- 1:23Speaker 8: Say, Doug Fairbanks Jr. is on Suspense tonight.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You like him, Billy? Yes, sir.
- 1:28Speaker 9: He's a self-starting, smooth-running humdinger. Why, he's got the pep
- 1:31Speaker 9: of an auto light ignition system, a set of spark plugs,
- 1:34Speaker 9: and a stateful battery combined.
- 1:36Speaker 10: Uh-oh, here's the show.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Suspense.
- 1:51Speaker 11: Autolite and its 60,000 dealers and service stations bring you
- 1:57Speaker 11: radio's outstanding theater of thrills. Starring tonight, Mr. Douglas Fairbanks
- 2:03Speaker 11: in a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense. Suspense.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Today, everybody's switching to Autolite, and tonight, Autolite takes pleasure
- 2:14Speaker 2: in presenting.
- 2:15Speaker 11: Anton Leder's production of Deep Into Darkness, starring Douglas Fairbanks.
- 2:30Speaker 4: This is a story about fear, and I'm an expert
- 2:34Speaker 4: on fear. Me, Ken Matthews.
- 2:42Speaker 6: That cheap, broken-down hotel room is as good a place
- 2:44Speaker 6: as any to start. It was all I could afford.
- 2:48Speaker 6: New York, the city of bright lights, and me, stretched
- 2:51Speaker 6: out on a squeaky bed, watching a spot change shape
- 2:55Speaker 6: on the ceiling.
- 2:57Speaker 4: It's a kind of game to keep a man from
- 2:58Speaker 4: going crazy.
- 3:00Speaker 6: For seven years, I watched another spot, changed it into
- 3:03Speaker 6: a million shapes, got to know it better than.
- 3:05Speaker 4: I knew myself.
- 3:06Speaker 6: That spot on the ceiling of my cell at Joliet Penitentiary.
- 3:15Speaker 6: When it was over, when they were finally ready to
- 3:16Speaker 6: let me go back into the world, the warden had
- 3:19Speaker 6: something to say to me, some advice.
- 3:21Speaker 11: Matthews, you're leaving us early because of your good behavior record. Now,
- 3:25Speaker 11: if I were you, I'd start fresh on the outside,
- 3:28Speaker 11: stay away from Chicago, go someplace new where they don't
- 3:31Speaker 11: know you.
- 3:32Speaker 4: I sort of figured on doing that, warden.
- 3:34Speaker 11: Good. You'll find it easier.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I'd find it easier?
- 3:42Speaker 6: I wonder how it is when it's tough. Nobody knew
- 3:45Speaker 6: me in New York. Nobody wanted to know me.
- 3:47Speaker 4: And as for a job, well, did you ever wash dishes?
- 3:51Speaker 4: I washed a million. Now, any dirty jobs nobody wants
- 3:54Speaker 4: to do, I did them all. That's how I built
- 3:55Speaker 4: up my fortune.
- 3:58Speaker 6: $ 17.
- 3:58Speaker 4: 50, United States currency.
- 4:00Speaker 6: That's how much I was worth this one morning when
- 4:03Speaker 6: I saw a sign out in front of a construction shop.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Men wanted the sign set. I believed it. I looked
- 4:08Speaker 4: up the form.
- 4:09Speaker 8: Bill, what's that compressor? Come on, Jim, keep it moving.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Ahem.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Looking for something, bud?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Yes. You have a sign out there. Are you hiring men?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Could be.
- 4:19Speaker 8: What do you do?
- 4:20Speaker 6: Oh, just about anything. I can keep books, handle your time.
- 4:24Speaker 6: I used to be an accountant.
- 4:26Speaker 11: Oh, yeah?
- 4:27Speaker 6: But if that's not what you're looking for, well, I
- 4:29Speaker 6: can swing a shovel, too. I just want a job.
- 4:32Speaker 8: I like that attitude.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Got your discharge certificate with you? Discharge?
- 4:35Speaker 8: Yeah, honorable discharge. Always like to give a break to
- 4:37Speaker 8: ex-service guys.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Oh, well, I wasn't in the service. Oh, all right. No, no,
- 4:44Speaker 4: I sat out the war. I was in jail. Oh,
- 4:47Speaker 4: it's tough.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It got a little mixed up in your account, huh?
- 4:52Speaker 4: No, it was manslaughter. I killed a man. What about
- 4:57Speaker 4: the job? I really need it.
- 4:59Speaker 8: Look, buddy, I don't want you to think this is
- 5:00Speaker 8: my idea, but.
- 5:01Speaker 4: But you can't use me. No, I can't. You see... Yes,
- 5:05Speaker 4: I see. Start fresh, he said.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I got an order.
- 5:08Speaker 4: See, you know how that is.
- 5:09Speaker 2: A boss's figure.
- 5:10Speaker 8: There's a lot of vets looking for jobs.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I got to give them the first crack at things.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Well, if I was to... It's all right. It isn't
- 5:16Speaker 4: your fault.
- 5:17Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 5:19Speaker 6: Maybe some other war. Somehow that was the last straw.
- 5:26Speaker 6: I started to hate. I hated everything and everyone. And
- 5:31Speaker 6: then I thought of my fortune, my $ 17. 50. And suddenly
- 5:36Speaker 6: I knew there was something I wanted to buy.
- 5:38Speaker 5: What do you want to use the gun for, mister?
- 5:40Speaker 4: I don't know. I just want to have it.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Well, we're supposed to put something down there. I mean,
- 5:45Speaker 5: along with your name and everything.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Oh, well, put down target practice. That's good enough, isn't it?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I guess so.
- 5:50Speaker 4: What's the name? Put down Smith. Smith.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Oh, it's like that, huh? Look, mister, I don't want
- 5:55Speaker 5: to get into any trouble. I run a respectable place
- 5:57Speaker 5: of business here.
- 5:58Speaker 4: You want to sell the gun, don't you?
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, sure, but.
- 5:59Speaker 4: You want the $ 14, don't you?
- 6:01Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 6:02Speaker 5: So it's Smith. And you're going to do some target practice.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Give me the 14 bucks and get lost, huh?
- 6:07Speaker 4: Thanks. Thanks a lot. Funny thing, I still don't know
- 6:13Speaker 4: why I wanted that gun. I swear I don't. Kill myself,
- 6:16Speaker 4: rob a bank or a filling station? I haven't any idea.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I suppose I just thought that having it would make
- 6:22Speaker 4: me feel better.
- 6:23Speaker 6: Only it didn't. It hung in my pocket heavy as lead.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Cold, dead, just like its owners. I turned into a
- 6:33Speaker 4: side street.
- 6:34Speaker 6: 52nd, 51st.
- 6:35Speaker 4: I wasn't sure. I stopped to light a cigarette.
- 6:38Speaker 6: And the car pulled up to the curb. It was
- 6:41Speaker 6: a big car with a chauffeur. A black car, smooth
- 6:45Speaker 6: and shiny. And I looked at the man getting out.
- 6:50Speaker 6: Just one look, and wheels started spinning around in my head.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I got dizzy.
- 6:55Speaker 6: The sidewalk twisted and bounced around like it was having
- 6:59Speaker 6: a convulsion. When he spoke, the shock of hearing his
- 7:02Speaker 6: voice straightened it all out, made it cold and clear
- 7:05Speaker 6: as hard crystal.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Just a few words to that chauffeur. Wait for me, Davis.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I won't be long.
- 7:10Speaker 6: He turned and walked past me, right by me into
- 7:14Speaker 6: the bank.
- 7:15Speaker 4: But he couldn't walk. He couldn't do anything. That was
- 7:18Speaker 4: Lee Burke.
- 7:19Speaker 6: I was staring at. Lee Burke, the man I'd killed
- 7:24Speaker 6: seven years ago.
- 7:34Speaker 11: For suspense, Autolite is bringing you Mr. Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
- 7:38Speaker 11: in Deep into Darkness, Autolite's presentation of radio's outstanding theater
- 7:43Speaker 11: of thrills, Suspense.
- 7:53Speaker 7: Sure looks like young Doug's got it, eh, Billy?
- 7:55Speaker 8: Boy, I'll say he has. What a chip he's got
- 7:58Speaker 8: in his shoulder.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Billy, stop chipping and chirping like your mother. Oh, by
- 8:02Speaker 3: the way, Ann, that ignition system of mine.
- 8:04Speaker 7: Scora Bullseye, she's completely on the beam. My jobs usually are,
- 8:08Speaker 7: especially when they're auto-light.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yes, sir. Money can't buy better ignition equipment for your car.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Auto-light parts are made by the world's largest independent manufacturers
- 8:17Speaker 2: of automobile electrical equipment. and Autolite service stations are equipped
- 8:22Speaker 2: with highly trained men and specialized machines to give your
- 8:25Speaker 2: car the best in automobile service.
- 8:27Speaker 9: That Autolite ignition system sounds intelligent enough to take an
- 8:30Speaker 9: IQ test.
- 8:30Speaker 11: Eh, Ed?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Stop pulling Ed's leg, Billy.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I'm used to it, Hap.
- 8:34Speaker 2: But I'll tell you this.
- 8:36Speaker 7: Autolite makes original equipment for many of the finest cars
- 8:39Speaker 7: in America. Ignition systems, batteries, spark plugs, generators, lots more.
- 8:45Speaker 7: So it's Only natural that Autolite ignition is... Well, it's
- 8:49Speaker 7: a perfectly timed team with smooth on-the-dot performance.
- 8:52Speaker 2: So when your car's electrical system needs attention, drive into
- 8:56Speaker 2: your nearest Autolite service station or the dealer who sells
- 8:59Speaker 2: your make of car and ask for original factory parts.
- 9:06Speaker 7: Autolite?
- 9:07Speaker 4: Autolite service stations are listed in your classified.
- 9:10Speaker 6: Telephone directory under Automotive Electrical Service.
- 9:17Speaker 11: And now, Autolite brings back to our Hollywood soundstage Mr.
- 9:21Speaker 11: Douglas Fairbanks Jr. as Ken in Deep Into Darkness. A
- 9:26Speaker 11: tale well calculated to keep you in.
- 9:28Speaker 7: Suspense.
- 9:29Speaker 11: Suspense.
- 9:44Speaker 6: In those few moments of watching a man walk across
- 9:46Speaker 6: a sidewalk into a bank, I lived.
- 9:47Speaker 4: It all over again. The way it happened when I
- 9:50Speaker 4: killed him seven years ago back in Chicago. There wasn't
- 9:53Speaker 4: anything about it I couldn't remember.
- 9:56Speaker 10: Ken, darling.
- 9:57Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 9:57Speaker 10: Do you love me, Ken?
- 9:59Speaker 4: Do I love you? Oh, no, not at all.
- 10:02Speaker 6: I just sit in that goofy nightclub night after night
- 10:05Speaker 6: because the food's so good.
- 10:06Speaker 10: Oh, Ken, you're sweet.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Lila, why don't you forget that place? Give it up.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Where's it going to get a girl like you, dancing
- 10:12Speaker 4: in a cheap honky-tonk?
- 10:13Speaker 10: You have something better to offer, darling?
- 10:14Speaker 4: I've offered it a half a dozen times. Marry me.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I got a good job. It'll get better.
- 10:20Speaker 10: Hand me my drink, will you?
- 10:21Speaker 6: Sure.
- 10:21Speaker 8: Here.
- 10:24Speaker 4: What do you say?
- 10:26Speaker 10: I've told you, Ken, over and over again, I'm not
- 10:28Speaker 10: getting married. Not to you, anyway. You're a sweet guy, sure,
- 10:33Speaker 10: and I'm very fond of you, but little Lila isn't
- 10:35Speaker 10: burying herself in any house with a bunch of squalling kids.
- 10:39Speaker 4: That's for suckers. I don't think you mean that at all.
- 10:41Speaker 8: No?
- 10:42Speaker 4: Well, you just watch, darling.
- 10:44Speaker 10: I'm going to wind up with a diamond so big
- 10:45Speaker 10: it'll take a two-ton truck to deliver it to me.
- 10:48Speaker 10: I'm going to have so many mink coats, I'll use
- 10:50Speaker 10: them for pajamas.
- 10:51Speaker 8: That's the way to talk, sis. You tell him.
- 10:53Speaker 10: Hello, Lee.
- 10:54Speaker 8: You're beginning to sound like you're getting good sense. What
- 10:58Speaker 8: are you doing up here with this bookkeeper, anyway?
- 11:01Speaker 4: And a good evening to you, too, Lee.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Never mind.
- 11:04Speaker 8: I thought I said I didn't want you wasting your
- 11:05Speaker 8: time with him.
- 11:06Speaker 4: He's all right.
- 11:07Speaker 8: Get out of here, Matthews.
- 11:08Speaker 4: Oh, wait a minute. If Lila wants me to go.
- 11:10Speaker 8: Oh, not satisfied with my suggestions, huh? Well, I have
- 11:13Speaker 8: a good mind to.
- 11:14Speaker 10: Lee, stop it. Put that gun away. Every time you
- 11:17Speaker 10: have a few drinks, you start waving that gun around.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Really, Lee, you better put it down. Stop acting like
- 11:20Speaker 4: a kid. Acting like a kid, huh? I'll show you
- 11:23Speaker 4: who's acting like a kid. I'll... Give me that gun. Lee!
- 11:26Speaker 4: Come on, Lee.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Give it to me.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I'll break your arm.
- 11:29Speaker 8: No, let go of my.
- 11:34Speaker 4: It went off. I was only trying to take it
- 11:37Speaker 4: away from him.
- 11:38Speaker 10: You killed him. Ken, you killed my brother.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I didn't mean it, I tell you. You saw what happened.
- 11:44Speaker 4: I was only trying to get the gun.
- 11:46Speaker 10: Get out, Ken. The police will find you.
- 11:49Speaker 12: Get out of here.
- 11:49Speaker 10: Hurry, I tell you.
- 11:51Speaker 8: Get out!
- 11:59Speaker 6: I got out all right in a hurry. It was
- 12:01Speaker 6: pouring that night, and I ran down the street with
- 12:02Speaker 6: a rain slapping me in the face. I ran up
- 12:05Speaker 6: a back alley into the darkness, and then I stopped.
- 12:08Speaker 6: I didn't want to run, not for the rest of
- 12:11Speaker 6: my life. I went to the nearest police station, turned
- 12:14Speaker 6: myself in. They took me back to the Berks, and
- 12:17Speaker 6: we found Lila sitting in a chair, glassy-eyed, just staring
- 12:21Speaker 6: down at.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Her brother, Lee.
- 12:23Speaker 6: He was right where I'd left him, sprawled on the floor,
- 12:27Speaker 6: face down. Lee Burke was dead, and they gave me
- 12:32Speaker 6: ten years for killing him. Only now he wasn't dead.
- 12:39Speaker 4: He couldn't be. I'd just seen him walk into a bank.
- 12:46Speaker 4: A nice car you got.
- 12:48Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Must be an important man to have a car like that, eh? Yeah,
- 12:52Speaker 4: he's a big guy. Lots of money, I suppose, eh? Yeah,
- 12:55Speaker 4: he's crawling with it.
- 12:56Speaker 11: Does that make you happy?
- 12:58Speaker 4: His name doesn't happen to be Burke, does it? No, Wilson.
- 13:02Speaker 8: Keith Wilson.
- 13:03Speaker 11: He also happens to be a stockbroker.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Anything else you want to know? Keith Wilson. Yeah, now
- 13:09Speaker 4: beat it. The boss is coming.
- 13:10Speaker 2: The boss?
- 13:11Speaker 4: Now, isn't that something?
- 13:12Speaker 12: All right, Davis.
- 13:13Speaker 8: I'll go straight to the office now.
- 13:14Speaker 9: Yes, sir.
- 13:15Speaker 4: In a hurry, Lee?
- 13:18Speaker 12: Oh, there must be some mistake.
- 13:21Speaker 4: My name isn't Lee. Oh, pardon me. It was Lee.
- 13:29Speaker 4: There wasn't any doubt about it. And he knew me, too.
- 13:33Speaker 4: I could see it in his eyes and the way
- 13:34Speaker 4: his face went white.
- 13:36Speaker 6: I didn't understand it. I couldn't figure out why or how,
- 13:40Speaker 6: but Lee Burke was alive. The rest of the fortune
- 13:47Speaker 6: went for a taxi ride, but it was worth it
- 13:49Speaker 6: to me. And I guess if I hadn't had enough
- 13:51Speaker 6: money to follow Lee's car wherever it went, I'd have
- 13:53Speaker 6: forced the cab driver with that gun I'd bought.
- 13:56Speaker 4: But it wasn't necessary. We went out to Long Island.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Way out.
- 13:59Speaker 6: And then the car swung into a place with a
- 14:01Speaker 6: big half-circle drive. Lee Burke, now Mr. Keith Wilson, was
- 14:06Speaker 6: doing very well for himself. And so was Lila. What's
- 14:12Speaker 6: the matter, Lila?
- 14:13Speaker 8: Ken.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Is it like seeing a ghost?
- 14:16Speaker 10: Ken. Ken, it's really you.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I saw a ghost just now, too, only he was
- 14:21Speaker 4: very much alive.
- 14:22Speaker 10: So that's what he was so excited about. Lee... Yes,
- 14:25Speaker 10: he came in, rushed upstairs. Told me to call the airport,
- 14:28Speaker 10: get him a plane from Miami.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Did you?
- 14:30Speaker 10: Not yet.
- 14:30Speaker 4: That won't do any good.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Ken.
- 14:31Speaker 10: Ken, what do you want? Why did you come here?
- 14:35Speaker 4: I just wanted to be sure, Lila. Absolutely sure.
- 14:39Speaker 10: What are you going to do?
- 14:40Speaker 4: I'd like to kill him. I ought to kill you both.
- 14:43Speaker 10: No, Ken. Don't talk like that. It wasn't me. I
- 14:47Speaker 10: didn't plan it.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But it was a plan, wasn't it, Lila? Wasn't it?
- 14:50Speaker 8: Yes.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:53Speaker 4: You want to tell me about it, or do I
- 14:54Speaker 4: have to choke it out of him?
- 14:56Speaker 10: I'll tell you.
- 14:59Speaker 4: What's the difference? You didn't kill Lee.
- 15:02Speaker 10: You didn't kill anybody.
- 15:03Speaker 4: Huh? It was a frame-up. Then how could I have
- 15:07Speaker 4: seen him like that? Lee was on the floor, dead.
- 15:10Speaker 10: No, that wasn't Lee. He found the man, Kenneth, a stumble-bum,
- 15:16Speaker 10: a drunk, and the man looked just like him. Close
- 15:19Speaker 10: enough for what Lee had figured out. was the crookedest
- 15:22Speaker 10: scheme you ever heard took out insurance with every company
- 15:25Speaker 10: in town half a million dollars with me as beneficiary
- 15:29Speaker 10: was going to kill this drifter and disappear let me
- 15:31Speaker 10: collect the money it was as simple as that at
- 15:34Speaker 10: first keep talking I told him it wouldn't work Ken
- 15:36Speaker 10: that they'd never pay off not that much not till
- 15:39Speaker 10: I checked fingerprints teeth everything but he had that figure
- 15:41Speaker 10: too they wouldn't check a thing if a fall guy
- 15:44Speaker 10: pleaded guilty to a.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Murder charge so that's how it was you were the fall.
- 15:47Speaker 10: Guy I let you take me home that night remember
- 15:51Speaker 10: I remember Lee had his gun loaded with blanks. It
- 15:54Speaker 10: was an act, the whole thing. Then when you ran,
- 15:56Speaker 10: he finished the job. He had the drunk in the
- 15:59Speaker 10: bedroom dressed in his clothes. He brought him into the
- 16:02Speaker 10: living room. Killed him right in front of me. That's
- 16:07Speaker 10: who you saw when you got back.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Good Lord.
- 16:11Speaker 10: That's why... Why I hate my brother, why I don't
- 16:14Speaker 10: care what happens to him.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Thanks, Lila. That's going to make it easier.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Lila!
- 16:20Speaker 8: Lila, did you call the airline?
- 16:21Speaker 10: No, Lee, not yet.
- 16:22Speaker 8: But I told you not to waste any time. You
- 16:24Speaker 8: don't know what this means.
- 16:25Speaker 4: She knows what it means, Lee. We all do. What
- 16:29Speaker 4: do you want?
- 16:31Speaker 6: Why'd you follow me here? Hey, look, I think you
- 16:33Speaker 6: better get out of here. I'd stay away from that telephone, Lee.
- 16:36Speaker 6: I'd stand still if.
- 16:37Speaker 5: I were you.
- 16:37Speaker 4: You'd better do as he says, Lee.
- 16:39Speaker 10: He's got a gun.
- 16:40Speaker 4: Ken, listen to me. You can't do this.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Not now. You don't want any more trouble.
- 16:44Speaker 8: Why, if the police found out.
- 16:46Speaker 4: The police?
- 16:47Speaker 6: If you told them I was going to kill you,
- 16:48Speaker 6: it wouldn't make sense, Lee. Because I've already done that.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Remember? Oh, Ken, look, I can.
- 16:54Speaker 8: Explain the whole thing.
- 16:55Speaker 4: It was a mistake. I'm glad you know that now.
- 16:59Speaker 4: I've made a lot of money, Ken. I've been very lucky.
- 17:01Speaker 8: I'll split with you. You look like you could use
- 17:04Speaker 8: some money.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Yes, I could.
- 17:06Speaker 8: Sure, that's good.
- 17:07Speaker 12: Only forget the gun, huh? And stop acting like you
- 17:10Speaker 12: want to kill me. You wouldn't gain anything that way.
- 17:13Speaker 12: Come on, Lila, fix some drinks or something, huh? We'll
- 17:17Speaker 12: talk this over friendly-like. Ken, you know Lila was always.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Crazy about you. I was always crazy about her.
- 17:23Speaker 10: Oh, Ken, I.
- 17:24Speaker 6: But let's talk about something else right now, Lee. Let's
- 17:26Speaker 6: talk about America. You know, this is a wonderful country,
- 17:28Speaker 6: the way the laws are set up to protect a man.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Ever hear of double jeopardy, Lee? Brings up a rather
- 17:34Speaker 6: interesting fact. That you can't try a man twice for
- 17:37Speaker 6: the same crime. Seven years I spent paying for killing you.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Seven years at Joliet and you weren't even dead. That
- 17:46Speaker 6: means I've paid for something I haven't done yet. I
- 17:50Speaker 6: still have the right, Lee, to kill you once more.
- 17:53Speaker 8: Now, Ken, stop it. You're talking crazy. There must be
- 17:56Speaker 8: something you want.
- 17:57Speaker 6: I only want to kill you, Lee, because you deserve
- 18:00Speaker 6: to be killed. We both know that, don't we? Only
- 18:02Speaker 6: I don't think I'll kill you now, not right away.
- 18:05Speaker 8: Oh, well, be reasonable, is that it, Ken?
- 18:10Speaker 4: Be reasonable, I say.
- 18:11Speaker 6: I'm going to stay right with you, 24 hours a day,
- 18:15Speaker 6: right up to the time you deal.
- 18:17Speaker 4: I know exactly when and how I'm going to kill you.
- 18:20Speaker 6: And you won't know. You'll never know, Lee, until it happens.
- 18:23Speaker 6: You'll just wait.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Just sit and wait and wait. I never left the
- 18:35Speaker 4: Burks mansion. Never let them leave. Ellis would leave from
- 18:38Speaker 4: the time he got up until he went to bed.
- 18:41Speaker 6: I stayed with him every waking hour, and I never
- 18:43Speaker 6: stopped twisting his life like a piece of putty, putting
- 18:46Speaker 6: fear in his mind until... Well, until there didn't seem
- 18:49Speaker 6: to be anything else left there at all. Just a trembling,
- 18:52Speaker 6: driving fear in everything he did, everything he said.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Lila, Lila, can't we do something? Get to somebody.
- 19:00Speaker 10: Oh, Lee, what can I do?
- 19:02Speaker 12: You could have said something to the servants. You had
- 19:05Speaker 12: a chance before he sent them away.
- 19:06Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 19:07Speaker 10: It all happened too fast. Got rid of them as
- 19:09Speaker 10: easily as he cut the telephone wires.
- 19:11Speaker 4: Well, we've got to do something. Get in touch with somebody.
- 19:14Speaker 4: With Madeline, maybe.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Oh, yes?
- 19:17Speaker 10: What will your blue-blood fiancé think of you now, when
- 19:20Speaker 10: you suddenly stop calling two days before your wedding, and
- 19:22Speaker 10: then don't show up?
- 19:23Speaker 4: The wedding. Oh, Lila, don't you see?
- 19:26Speaker 8: If anything should happen to the wedding now, I'd be ruined.
- 19:29Speaker 8: He can't get away with this.
- 19:31Speaker 12: He'll let down sometime.
- 19:33Speaker 8: He's got to sleep.
- 19:34Speaker 4: So do we. Lila's right, Lee.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Oh, Ken, you were there by the door.
- 19:39Speaker 6: You heard.
- 19:40Speaker 4: About your wedding? Yes, Lee. I got back just in
- 19:42Speaker 4: time tonight. Can I pour you a Manhattan? No, no, no,
- 19:46Speaker 4: I don't want anything. You're a funeral.
- 19:47Speaker 6: No, don't, don't say that. You're falling apart much faster
- 19:52Speaker 6: than I thought, Lee. It wasn't taking long at all.
- 20:03Speaker 6: Lee couldn't sit still for a minute. Couldn't take his
- 20:06Speaker 6: eyes off me. Of course, little things like this didn't
- 20:09Speaker 6: exactly help.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Who is it?
- 20:16Speaker 4: Ken? Yes, Lee. It's Ken. Got the gun? I have
- 20:22Speaker 4: the gun, Lee. This? This is the time, huh? No, Lee, no.
- 20:29Speaker 4: I don't think so.
- 20:30Speaker 6: Here.
- 20:31Speaker 4: Drink this. What is it? Milk. Warm milk.
- 20:36Speaker 11: Ah.
- 20:37Speaker 4: Put you to sleep.
- 20:38Speaker 2: For good, you mean?
- 20:39Speaker 4: No, no.
- 20:40Speaker 6: Just until morning. You see, I wouldn't think of killing
- 20:43Speaker 6: a man on his wedding day.
- 20:45Speaker 8: What?
- 20:46Speaker 6: Don't tell me you've forgotten your wedding to the blue-blooded
- 20:48Speaker 6: Miss DeHaven. You've come a long way, Lee, marrying into
- 20:52Speaker 6: the social register.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Oh, don't, Kim.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Come on, drink up. You'll need your strength for the wedding.
- 20:58Speaker 12: No.
- 20:58Speaker 4: No, that's all off. I haven't even called her, Kim.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Lila has. I made her call.
- 21:03Speaker 6: She made some very pretty excuses for you, and the
- 21:05Speaker 6: wedding will go on... As scheduled.
- 21:08Speaker 4: What are you going to do?
- 21:09Speaker 11: Nothing.
- 21:10Speaker 6: Only behave yourself tomorrow. Do as you're told. And you
- 21:14Speaker 6: might live through the ceremony.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Will thou, Keith, take this woman to thy wedded wife...
- 21:32Speaker 5: to live together after God's ordinance in the holy state
- 21:35Speaker 5: of matrimony... Wilt thou love her, comfort her, honor and
- 21:38Speaker 5: keep her in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others,
- 21:42Speaker 5: keep thee unto her so long as ye both shall live?
- 21:44Speaker 4: Say no. Can.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Say no, or I'll kill you right here in front
- 21:48Speaker 6: of them all.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Say it, Lee.
- 21:49Speaker 11: Mr.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Wilson, the answer, please.
- 21:52Speaker 4: No. No, I can't. I can't.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Mr.
- 21:54Speaker 8: Wilson, please, the answer.
- 21:56Speaker 9: This must be the answer.
- 22:02Speaker 4: There was only one thing wrong with that little wedding scene.
- 22:04Speaker 6: I had fun, sure, but... In the excitement, I'm afraid
- 22:07Speaker 6: I relaxed a little. I wasn't sure how much it mattered.
- 22:10Speaker 6: That depended on Lila. When I was sure Lee was
- 22:14Speaker 6: asleep that night, I met.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Her in the living room. Got right to the point.
- 22:18Speaker 10: Something on your mind, Ken?
- 22:19Speaker 6: Yes.
- 22:20Speaker 4: Mousy. Who's Mousy?
- 22:23Speaker 10: Ken, you look so tired, so thin.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Tell me, Lila. Tell me about Mousy.
- 22:28Speaker 10: What do you know about him?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Lee's been talking about him in his sleep. Talking about
- 22:32Speaker 4: Mousy and you, Lila.
- 22:33Speaker 6: And me.
- 22:35Speaker 4: You'd better tell me.
- 22:36Speaker 7: All about it.
- 22:37Speaker 10: Ken, you're hurting my arm. I don't know anything about Mousy.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Maybe he was there at the wedding. Maybe you saw him.
- 22:43Speaker 4: Maybe you gave him the message. Did you, Lila?
- 22:44Speaker 10: Ken, stop it. You know I promised I wouldn't do
- 22:46Speaker 10: anything like that. Don't you trust me?
- 22:48Speaker 4: Trust you? Should I, Lila? Do you really think I should?
- 22:50Speaker 10: But you know how I feel about you. Surely you
- 22:54Speaker 10: don't think... Oh, Ken. Ken, darling.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Get away from me. Ken! So that's it.
- 23:05Speaker 10: It was all just a gag to keep the little
- 23:07Speaker 10: girl in line.
- 23:08Speaker 4: How did you expect me to feel after all this happened?
- 23:10Speaker 10: That's right. I was naive, wasn't I?
- 23:15Speaker 2: Sure.
- 23:17Speaker 10: Okay. Well, I won't be naive anymore. You can bet
- 23:21Speaker 10: on that.
- 23:22Speaker 11: Lila.
- 23:22Speaker 10: Good night. Ken, darling.
- 23:25Speaker 6: When I cooled off, I realized I'd gone too far.
- 23:35Speaker 6: She wouldn't be on my side anymore, unless I could
- 23:40Speaker 6: talk to her again and make it all seem like
- 23:42Speaker 6: a mistake, a joke maybe. Yeah, that'd be the thing.
- 23:46Speaker 6: But when I went to find her, she wasn't around.
- 23:48Speaker 6: I didn't see her again until next morning. Every morning
- 23:55Speaker 6: I went out to the gate for the paper, but
- 23:56Speaker 6: this time I waited for Lila to get up and
- 23:58Speaker 6: come down so I could talk to her before Lee
- 24:00Speaker 6: came in, try to fix things.
- 24:02Speaker 4: And standing there in the hallway, I fixed things all right.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Fixed them good. Lila.
- 24:09Speaker 8: Yes?
- 24:10Speaker 4: I want you to know that, well, that I'm sorry
- 24:15Speaker 4: about last night.
- 24:16Speaker 10: It's all right.
- 24:16Speaker 4: No, it isn't, no.
- 24:18Speaker 6: I didn't mean what I said at all. I guess
- 24:20Speaker 6: I'd built up so much hate that, well, I was upset.
- 24:24Speaker 6: I was blind to how you feel about me, how
- 24:27Speaker 6: I really feel about you.
- 24:28Speaker 10: Ken, you're asking me to be naive again.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Yes, I guess I am. I like you that way.
- 24:34Speaker 4: I looked for you last night to tell you. You
- 24:36Speaker 4: weren't around. Where'd you go? I.
- 24:40Speaker 10: Ken, I.
- 24:40Speaker 4: It's all right. I don't care where you went. Anyway,
- 24:43Speaker 4: now you know how I really feel.
- 24:45Speaker 8: Ken, you.
- 24:46Speaker 10: you don't know what you're saying.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Yes, I do, Lila. I've been thinking. That's the way
- 24:50Speaker 4: it ought to be.
- 24:51Speaker 6: We've been a couple of lost souls, but maybe by
- 24:54Speaker 6: forgetting the past, trying to find some peace of mind.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Ken! Think about it, will you, Lila?
- 25:03Speaker 6: I went out then, out the door and down the driveway,
- 25:06Speaker 6: left her standing there, staring after me.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Suddenly, as I was almost to the gate, I heard
- 25:11Speaker 4: it coming, running fast.
- 25:12Speaker 6: Ken!
- 25:13Speaker 10: No, Ken, come back!
- 25:15Speaker 6: And I saw it, a car that had been parked
- 25:16Speaker 6: down the road. It was moving now, gathering speed, coming
- 25:18Speaker 6: right past the gate.
- 25:19Speaker 7: Ken!
- 25:20Speaker 8: Ken, look out!
- 25:21Speaker 4: And then she was there. She threw herself right in
- 25:23Speaker 4: front of me. I heard the shouts.
- 25:27Speaker 6: I felt her thrown heavily against me, and then her
- 25:30Speaker 6: body went limp in my arms.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I held her close for a second and then I
- 25:35Speaker 4: lowered her to the ground. I walked back up the drive, alone.
- 25:52Speaker 6: Lee was out in front of the house, sitting on
- 25:53Speaker 6: a bench in front of a big tree. He'd heard
- 25:56Speaker 6: the shots, I'm sure, but he was just sitting there,
- 25:59Speaker 6: probably waiting for Lila to come back and say that
- 26:02Speaker 6: But Mousy had taken care of me.
- 26:04Speaker 4: He turned and looked up as I walked toward him. Lila? Oh, no.
- 26:15Speaker 6: His eyes seemed to look right through me somehow. He
- 26:18Speaker 6: was that full of fear, I guess. His fingers gripped
- 26:21Speaker 6: the tree in back of him, dug deep into the bark.
- 26:24Speaker 6: He was waiting for me to kill him.
- 26:26Speaker 10: Ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Lila's dead, Lee. Your gunman got her instead of me. Lila?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Lila?
- 26:40Speaker 6: I'm sorry because there was something I didn't have time
- 26:44Speaker 6: to tell her.
- 26:45Speaker 4: I never intended to kill you, Lee.
- 26:48Speaker 6: I was just showing you how seven years looked crowded
- 26:52Speaker 6: into a few days.
- 26:53Speaker 4: Seven years? Yeah, that's right. I guess you know now.
- 26:57Speaker 4: I guess you know why and what you did.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Lee.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Lee, this is Ken. I'm talking to you. Ken. Ken. I...
- 27:14Speaker 4: I don't know any Ken. And he didn't.
- 27:19Speaker 6: He didn't even know himself. The way his eyes looked,
- 27:22Speaker 6: I don't think he ever will again. They weren't Lee
- 27:25Speaker 6: Burke's eyes anymore. They belonged to someone else.
- 27:29Speaker 10: Funny.
- 27:30Speaker 6: The man who tried to be somebody else had finally
- 27:34Speaker 6: made it. And it was not good to look upon.
- 27:54Speaker 9: Him.
- 27:55Speaker 11: Thank you, Douglas Fairbanks, for an outstanding performance on... Suspense.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Talk about performance, Dad.
- 28:05Speaker 9: Autolight ignition is good, but what about Doug Fairbanks?
- 28:08Speaker 2: He's really got it, Billy.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Well, let's get going.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Your mother.
- 28:12Speaker 9: Mom will be as full of suspense as your autolight
- 28:14Speaker 9: ignition system is full of pep, purr, power, and pistol
- 28:17Speaker 9: point performance.
- 28:18Speaker 7: That boy knows his autolight peas, and he doesn't miss
- 28:21Speaker 7: any cues.
- 28:22Speaker 11: Eh, Hap?
- 28:22Speaker 2: Yes, an autolight is your cue to real motoring enjoyment.
- 28:26Speaker 2: So remember, wherever you go.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Autolight means spark plug.
- 28:31Speaker 3: Ignition engineered spark plug.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Autolight means batteries. Stay full batteries. Autolight means ignition system.
- 28:39Speaker 2: The lifeline of your car.
- 28:49Speaker 11: And now here again is Mr.
- 28:51Speaker 4: Douglas Fairbanks. I've enjoyed this appearance on Suspense very much.
- 28:55Speaker 6: And I've noted with great interest as a Suspense fan
- 28:57Speaker 6: that Agnes Moorhead will return to the soundstage next week,
- 29:01Speaker 6: the scene of her splendid performances of the past. As
- 29:04Speaker 6: one of the many who applauded her portrayal in the
- 29:06Speaker 6: suspense classic Sorry, Wrong Number, I'll be listening with anticipation
- 29:09Speaker 6: next week for Agnes Moorhead in The Yellow Wallpaper, a
- 29:13Speaker 6: powerful study in.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Suspense!
- 29:16Speaker 11: Suspense!
- 29:24Speaker 2: Douglas Fairbanks may soon be seen in his own production,
- 29:28Speaker 2: The O'Flynn. Tonight's suspense play was written by Edward James,
- 29:33Speaker 2: with music composed by Lucian Morrowick and conducted by Lud Gluskin.
- 29:37Speaker 2: The entire production was under the direction of Anton M.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Leder.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Next Thursday, same time, you will hear Miss Agnes Moorhead
- 29:44Speaker 2: in The Yellow Wallpaper.
- 29:52Speaker 4: This is the Autolite Suspense Show signing off.
- 29:55Speaker 8: Good night.
- 29:56Speaker 4: Switch to Autolite.
- 29:58Speaker 2: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 30:22Speaker 1: We close with suspense deep into darkness. Thank you for
- 30:25Speaker 1: keeping company with Classic Radio this evening.
