- 1:14causes our primary purpose is still Sovereign help other
- 1:18alcoholics achieve sobriety. Yeah.
- 1:20Hi, everyone. My name is Heather and I am an
- 1:23alcoholic. Yeah, always a bit of a binge
- 1:29Drinker. I just absolutely love to
- 1:35alcohol. I love the effect of it.
- 1:38The way it made me feel how it took away, my fear, how it gave
- 1:44me courage, how it allowed me to talk to boys.
- 1:50Yeah, there's there's a whole lot of stuff that that did from
- 1:54that stuff did for me. And yeah, I was, my father was
- 2:01an alcoholic and he went to AA when I was 18.
- 2:07And basically, I swore that I would never drink and I would
- 2:13never drink that stuff. But by the time I was 18, I was
- 2:20drinking because it was just the thing to do and it was what
- 2:27everyone else was doing and all my friends were doing and my
- 2:31sisters and everyone I still got a lot of parties where there was
- 2:36kegs of beer and cider. And yeah but not long.
- 2:40After I started drinking I had problems with alcohol.
- 2:45It became Very apparent that whenever I drank there were
- 2:51often, not always often consequences for of my drinking.
- 2:59The really yucky consequences I found were the physical health,
- 3:04how it affected my physical health.
- 3:08And that was the terrible hangovers that I had.
- 3:12That would last for three days after I'd had a Wandering
- 3:15wandering session. And that kind of started.
- 3:21That was probably more evident in my 30s, but in my twenties,
- 3:25it was, it was starting then, as well.
- 3:29By the time, I was 21. I had stopped drinking alcohol
- 3:33because of the problems that was causing in my life because I
- 3:36could not guarantee my behavior. Most of the time when I've
- 3:39drank, I was always, I was pretty depressed as a teenager.
- 3:46Yeah, I definitely Finally have that side to me which I've
- 3:51always had and I've had to go to the GP and get and have ongoing
- 3:56help for that, still today? Yes I came into a a 1994 but
- 4:06going back to Before I was. Yeah, I met my husband when I
- 4:17was 21, I was with him for 17 years.
- 4:23We had two children. I had he was a binge Drinker
- 4:29like me and there was other drugs that were tried, but
- 4:37alcohol was my favorite. Not tried a lot.
- 4:41I didn't try a lot of other stuff, really?
- 4:44Because every time I tried something, I knew that alcohol
- 4:46was the best. It was the the one that I went
- 4:50to the most, you know. Yeah.
- 4:53And I had these two little kids and I was, I was just like, I
- 4:58was just like, right like You know, I'd be taking them to
- 5:04school when I was hungover and these hangovers, the last and
- 5:09four days and I just couldn't work it out.
- 5:12I could not work. Could not work it out because I
- 5:15didn't think I was as bad as my dad.
- 5:18Who was in a? And, and he was sober and he
- 5:24died sober in 2016 and he was my massive power of example for me
- 5:33to, to get sober and to live the way basically just live a good
- 5:41life, you know, that's what I saw him do.
- 5:44Yeah. So, you know, I yeah, I said
- 5:55that I came into AI in night in 1994 because I just was sick and
- 6:00tired of being sick and tired and I was getting it felt like
- 6:04my brain was starting to be damaged, and I couldn't work
- 6:08that out because I thought how can you have brain damage when
- 6:12you're only benge drinking, but you definitely can.
- 6:18And what I liked about AA was they said that I said it was the
- 6:27first string that does the damage that I have an allergy to
- 6:31alcohol which at first, it didn't really makes much sense
- 6:36to me. But after a while I thought.
- 6:38Yeah, well I certainly have a different reaction to other
- 6:41people to this alcohol. So I came in in 94.
- 6:52I was in my Early 30s and I love day.
- 6:59I really identified with people that were in the rooms at that
- 7:02time and I really thought that I was an alcoholic.
- 7:12I didn't have a good marriage. I didn't have a good marriage
- 7:18and I wasn't happy. And at the end of that year, I
- 7:23stopped going to meetings because I think really, I had
- 7:29probably picked up a drink. Well before I actually stopped
- 7:32going to meetings, I was full of resentment.
- 7:35I was angry at my husband. I was angry at everyone.
- 7:38I was I was angry that I couldn't drink and so I drank
- 7:42again. And yeah I drank for another
- 7:46three years and it was still binge drinking and I remembered
- 7:51Hearing in the rooms you know that it That this disease
- 7:54progresses and I definitely was getting worse in the three years
- 8:01after 1994, and I just remember thinking a lot after I had my
- 8:08children, that it wasn't fair that I was that they were
- 8:12growing up with a mother. Who was we was like me?
- 8:16Yeah. I remember thinking that a lot
- 8:21and yeah, 1997. I ended up.
- 8:26Thinking that if I didn't get help that I was going to die
- 8:31drink-driving or I was going to die or I was going to kill
- 8:36people in my car and I just knew that I just couldn't, that was a
- 8:43real kind of line for me. You know, I just kind of
- 8:48thought. Now I want to add it, I was
- 8:50never suicidal. I've never been suicide or I've
- 8:53had depression but I've never Been suicidal and I just thought
- 8:57now you can do something about this.
- 8:59So I went back to I and I haven't had a drink since 1997
- 9:03and that's because of the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous and it's
- 9:07because I try to do is program one day at a time.
- 9:12So they used to say things like you are always in the early days
- 9:17of a. I when I came this to say,
- 9:19you're always an arm's length away from picking up a drink.
- 9:24Just remember that. And I should think, well, I'm
- 9:27not, but I was because really, we all are, you know?
- 9:33Yeah, so I did, I really, I really took that on board and I
- 9:38took all the stuff on board that I heard, you know, the Serenity
- 9:41Prayer. I was pretty angry.
- 9:46When I first came into a, i because I didn't really want to
- 9:49stop drinking. I just wanted the consequences
- 9:52of my drinking to stop, you know.
- 9:56So I stayed sober for two years in Ai.
- 10:01And then I started looking at the 12 steps which are on the
- 10:06wall walls of every room that you go into an AA meeting.
- 10:11And the reason I did that was I was in a lot of pain.
- 10:18I was in a lot of emotional pain and it was because I had split
- 10:22up with my husband. I had left him and because I
- 10:31finally got the courage to leave him like I had wanted to leave
- 10:35him for a long time but for some reason, I just couldn't or
- 10:39wouldn't. So in two years at two years
- 10:42sober, I left my husband and he ended up meeting someone within
- 10:47three months. And getting her pregnant.
- 10:51And then he, I was just devastated because I didn't want
- 10:59him to be happy, you know, why should he be happy when I wasn't
- 11:04happy? You know, I left him.
- 11:06But I still wasn't happy because I was struggling with all the
- 11:09stuff that comes up when you put down the drink you know.
- 11:14So yeah one of the things that I did do was I got back I was in I
- 11:17had a good job. Job.
- 11:18I've always had good jobs. I've always had always had in my
- 11:23career. I've had a career and it's in
- 11:27health. I will say that it is in health
- 11:31and I just knew that That all I really wanted to do was go to AA
- 11:39at that time was go to a, I look after my kids and get a house
- 11:45because I was renting, because he got the house, and I got a
- 11:50tiny bit of money for a deposit for a house.
- 11:54And then I ended up buying a house, which was amazing because
- 11:59by this time I was like, nearly 40 and yeah die.
- 12:07What else happened? I started looking at the steps
- 12:10while I did that when I was 2 years sober, I remember thinking
- 12:13I find. I'm I remember finding Being
- 12:16Sober really hard and I had a, I had gotten a sponsor of pretty
- 12:21early on and I used to bring her and say things like, I don't
- 12:26know how you do this and, you know, I don't know if I can keep
- 12:30doing this because I really want a drink and I would say that a
- 12:33lot. So you know they are Session for
- 12:37me was not really removed straight away.
- 12:40It took a while for that kind of, I don't know whether it was
- 12:44the obsession or the compulsion, it was probably the compulsion
- 12:47really to drink was not really removed for a while and it took
- 12:52me ages to accept that. I was an alcoholic.
- 12:57I could admit it but it took me a long time.
- 13:00More than 5 years to accept that.
- 13:03I was an alcoholic. But in that time, I didn't Got
- 13:06the drink. I just did what they said to do,
- 13:09which was go to meetin's, put one foot in front of the other,
- 13:13you know. Do your best, make the romance,
- 13:17where you can and and all this stuff and by the time I was five
- 13:22years sober. Yeah.
- 13:26My kids, you know, my kids have always done quite well but I was
- 13:31I met a bloke Pub the same Pub that I met.
- 13:36My husband at, I was five years sober.
- 13:38I'm a bloke who has a daily Drinker in a pub, and I fell for
- 13:42him and that sounds really crazy to me now, but I did and then so
- 13:51I was with him for 10 years and he was a daily Drinker and I
- 13:54didn't drink, which is amazing, that I didn't drink, I didn't
- 13:58drink when I was with him, I didn't drink any time and then
- 14:04he left me when I was 15 years sober.
- 14:09And I was devastated. I was absolutely.
- 14:13It was like, I just never saw it coming.
- 14:15And I wouldn't have left him. I don't think.
- 14:20Yeah. So he left me and I was once
- 14:22again. Absolutely breathtaking.
- 14:25You know, and just to speed this up a bit, something happened
- 14:32where I was so upset that I just couldn't Not see a way I
- 14:42couldn't see what I could do without drinking, and I was
- 14:47found by my daughter on semaphore road with a bottle of
- 14:51wine in the car with the leadoff.
- 14:53Me smelling up, and tears, running down my face.
- 15:00It's, there's a lot more to that story, but just to keep going,
- 15:03you know, I at that moment I had another call from an, A, A Send
- 15:09a woman a a friend who knew that I was running rough, really
- 15:12running rough and she rang me. She said, we're are you Heather
- 15:15and I told her and I said she said no you don't want to do
- 15:20that Heather and I said yeah I know you know I just knew that I
- 15:26wasn't. It felt like I wasn't going to
- 15:28do it but it was so close and I put the lid on and I got out and
- 15:33smoked my first cigarette for 10 years.
- 15:36Because I just want to and I smoked for about six weeks.
- 15:43And yeah, since then, you know, I've probably been on my own
- 15:49roughly for about, probably about 10 years.
- 15:53I've been on my own without a relationship.
- 15:55And that's been really hard, but it's also, I've also learned a
- 16:00lot about myself and a lot about, you know what?
- 16:06What makes what makes me happy? Yeah.
- 16:10What makes me happy? What makes me find joy in life.
- 16:16I suppose and one of the things that I've found is bike riding
- 16:20and I absolutely love it and when I'm on the bike I just feel
- 16:26that you know, I just don't have any worries at all.
- 16:30I just really like that that kind of action.
- 16:35Action, you know? Like because I was always I was
- 16:37always into sport. I'd always always always not
- 16:42sport. I was into running actually.
- 16:45And then I hurt my knee and so I couldn't run anymore.
- 16:47So I had to pick up something else and it just happened to be
- 16:49the bike. And yes, so these days, you
- 16:54know, I've I don't work anymore and that's been really good for
- 16:59me as well. You know, like I found my job
- 17:03pretty stressful in the last few years and I just was able to
- 17:08just go. No, let's just stop that and a
- 17:14few other things have happened in the last few years.
- 17:16That make me think that have been not what I thought was
- 17:21going to happen but at the same time I'm okay with it, you know?
- 17:28Because for me this staying sober as a gift, it feels like
- 17:35I've been given a gift you know because it's a pretty nasty
- 17:39conditions. Shin the World Health
- 17:43Organization said that alcoholism is a disease back in
- 17:47the 1960s. So you know, when I first came
- 17:53in and I kind of thought or is it a disease?
- 17:56Like is that really an when I heard that what the World Health
- 18:00Organization said, it it just kind of helped reinforce the
- 18:05fact that this is an all-encompassing disease of
- 18:10Menthol. Mental, physical emotional,
- 18:14spiritual. It's like a real big.
- 18:17It kind of is Big, you know. It's not just, it's not a little
- 18:24thing. And I always say it in
- 18:27newcomers, just, you know, if you're in the rooms or, you
- 18:32know, you're in a zoom meeting or were up whatever and try and
- 18:36listen to the similarities and not the differences because I
- 18:39definitely listen to the difference.
- 18:40He's a lot of us do. If you can hear similarities,
- 18:44that's all really good. That's a really good thing, you
- 18:48know, because you can get some identification as an alcoholic
- 18:53and we are all different, you know, you'll get, you'll get
- 18:57this daily Drinkers and binge Drinkers and Bender Drinkers and
- 19:02there's just all sorts. And for me, I believe that its
- 19:06genetic not everyone believes that, but I believe that it is
- 19:12for me. And I think that that this
- 19:15condition Can skip Generations, it can skip siblings it, can it
- 19:21can come out in people that haven't got a history of it and
- 19:25their families and I don't know how it does that but it does
- 19:27that. But it could be if you look back
- 19:30in the history I feel I believe there's probably someone that's
- 19:33got up that's had at, you know. Yeah.
- 19:37So we really are, you know, I've really are quite different and
- 19:42we have to some of the stuff that I've learned in AI.
- 19:46All the ways that I try to live today, you know, and I just
- 19:52don't pick up that first drink one day at a time.
- 19:55And by doing that, I can't get drunk and I can't get a, can't
- 20:03they doing that as well? I can, you know, I can get up in
- 20:07the morning and I can have a shower.
- 20:09I can feed my dog, I can take my dog for a walk.
- 20:12I can go and do the shopping. I can look after myself with
- 20:16food. Food.
- 20:17Good food. Yeah, all that sort of stuff.
- 20:21You don't have to really basic simple stuff but it's really
- 20:26important, you know? And yeah, I think, you know,
- 20:31with AI as well. I had tried.
- 20:36I had tried lots of other things to try and stop the consequences
- 20:41of my drinking and nothing worked.
- 20:44Absolutely nothing. I had, I had Slaying.
- 20:47I had ways that I tried myself. I had all these books on
- 20:53self-help and addiction and none of them helped.
- 20:57The only thing that's helped stop me.
- 21:00Stop drinking is coming to Alcoholics Anonymous.
- 21:04And you know, initially I was like so full of like denial and
- 21:08you know, I surely can't have this but it is a fatal disease
- 21:13and I have to remember that, you know, In the in the early days
- 21:19when I came in that the old-timers would say things like
- 21:23it's death, jail or Insanity, and you still hear that in the
- 21:26rooms today and it's important that you do hear that because it
- 21:30is really nasty. And I think I think it's
- 21:35underestimated how really nasty this is, you know, there's been
- 21:41times in my recovery where off thought, oh, you know, like,
- 21:46When's it going to get better but it does get better.
- 21:50It just it kind of it comes and goes, you know?
- 21:55And what I'm really grateful for today is that I have I have
- 21:59quite a few grandchildren that I can be with and I can spend time
- 22:05with than you know, I have kids that have two kids that I have a
- 22:12love, having a relationship with them and I just I just love all
- 22:18the basic stuff, you know, and I do have a relationship with a
- 22:23higher power that I don't actually really understand that
- 22:27well but I know that I've over the years.
- 22:29I've had to develop that kind of belief and how and develop that
- 22:35trust because it's just another tool in the in the stuff that
- 22:42we're here in AI, you know. It's a tool that I can use to
- 22:46get relief. 'F to get relief.
- 22:48It's a little bit like how I got relief from the drinking but
- 22:52it's through a higher power, that's a higher power, that's
- 22:56greater than myself, you know? So yeah, if you're new or you're
- 23:02not sure whether you are an alcoholic, keep searching.
- 23:07If you've come into a or you're thinking about coming in, you
- 23:11know, I used to say if it looks like a duck and it walks Walks
- 23:17Like A Duck. It probably it quacks like a
- 23:20duck head. Probably is a duck.
- 23:23And I love that one because it's simple, its basic and it's it's
- 23:27so true. And, you know, people that come
- 23:29into a, a they yeah, you know, you're in, we all come in and
- 23:35it's for its for a reason. We don't just come in there for
- 23:39nothing, you know, we just want to have a better life and not
- 23:42have to live with this stuff, this alcohol.
- 23:45And when we don't hate alcohol, will leave it to the ones that
- 23:49can handle it. And for me I can't I can't
- 23:52handle. I tried so hard for so many
- 23:55years. So yeah, I think I've got to
- 23:58leave it there. So thanks for listening to me.
- 24:02And yeah, I'll say I'll say, see ya boy.
- 24:08We have local meetings for the full week in the local area.
