Speaker 4: on several different things. It's Friday, which means Handy Gardner
1:44
Speaker 4: from the Cannell Charlest New Main Association is here with
1:46
Speaker 4: this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. We're
1:48
Speaker 4: going to talk a little. High school football is of

Speaker 4: course Hurricane. We'll be in action tonight as well. Herbert Hoover.
1:53
Speaker 4: No Tom Bragg this week. Tom had some work issues

Speaker 4: Rob are you there? Let's go to Rob Reel. Good morning, sir,
2:19
Speaker 4: Good morning, And where is Rob Reel? Where in the
2:22
Speaker 4: world is Rob Real? Today?
2:24
Speaker 8: So I'm not walking through Weston so much as I'm
2:28
Speaker 8: walking around Weston this morning. I started just at the
2:33
Speaker 8: west end of Weston, but thanks to Google Maps and
2:37
Speaker 8: the Patagorean theorem, I'm kind of cutting the corner going
2:40
Speaker 8: through tiny kinch Low later today on my way to
2:44
Speaker 8: the edge of Clarksburg for day seven of October with
2:48
Speaker 8: panhandle cleaning and restoration.
2:50
Speaker 4: Now again, if you're just joining us to you think,
2:52
Speaker 4: what what is this whole thing about. We've been checking
2:54
Speaker 4: in with Rob now for a week. Rob kind of
2:56
Speaker 4: made a little bit of a promise of the listeners
2:58
Speaker 4: that if we raise a certain amount of mone for
3:00
Speaker 4: WVU Children's that Rob would walk the check from Charleston
3:04
Speaker 4: to Morgantown. And he left last week and he's having
3:07
Speaker 4: to walk the back roads because the interstate probably not
3:11
Speaker 4: probably not recommended. I've got i got a whole host
3:15
Speaker 4: of folks in the studio with me this morning. Rob,
3:17
Speaker 4: I've got a million nicely from West Virginia. Watch Chris Lawrence,
3:20
Speaker 4: Matt Murphy getting ready to talk some high school football. Milia.
3:23
Speaker 4: Do you have any questions for Rob here?
3:25
Speaker 6: I just want to know what he's eating, Like, is
3:26
Speaker 6: he's stopping at local food spots?
3:30
Speaker 4: What is it like?
3:30
Speaker 9: What's the food journey like?
3:33
Speaker 8: I'm doing my best to stay local, and actually, fortunately
3:37
Speaker 8: as rural as some of this is, local is really
3:40
Speaker 8: the only option, let alone the best option. In some
3:43
Speaker 8: of these places you're not running into uh not running
3:45
Speaker 8: into a lot of chains in places like Pickle Street.
3:49
Speaker 4: But the.
3:52
Speaker 8: One of my favorite things about this so far as
3:53
Speaker 8: I've been I've been finding like local ice cream joints.
3:56
Speaker 8: I got a blueberry milkshake at the Coke and Float
3:58
Speaker 8: on the West End of and yesterday I've kind of
4:02
Speaker 8: got my heart set on the Polling's dairy king later today,
4:06
Speaker 8: so a ridiculous amount of dairy So I will be
4:10
Speaker 8: the guy who gains weight walking one hundred and seventy
4:12
Speaker 8: two miles.
4:14
Speaker 4: Rob.
4:15
Speaker 3: This is Chris. I admire what you're doing, but I
4:18
Speaker 3: just got a check. I would hate for this thing
4:21
Speaker 3: to come to an end and you walk into WU
4:24
Speaker 3: Children's Hospital and go, oh man, I forgot the check.
4:28
Speaker 4: Isn't that exactly what I told you last week?
4:31
Speaker 2: Rob?
4:31
Speaker 4: And that exactly what I said to you.
4:34
Speaker 8: It is exactly what you said.
4:36
Speaker 4: Yes, you do have the check, right, Oh man? That
4:41
Speaker 4: is gonna start all over.
4:42
Speaker 3: Again if you're gonna have to walk back down here
4:44
Speaker 3: and get it, because nobody's gonna drive.
4:46
Speaker 4: It to you.
4:46
Speaker 8: So so for those of you playing our home game,
4:50
Speaker 8: Dave actually pinch hit for me yesterday at an event
4:53
Speaker 8: at the Putnam Career and Technical Center and took truck
4:56
Speaker 8: Norris with him, so as long as he didn't move it,
5:01
Speaker 8: it should still be in the back of the cab. Right.
5:05
Speaker 4: Well, I mean I did stop on the way home
5:08
Speaker 4: for a six pack and somebody, so that's a cool check.
5:11
Speaker 4: I said, you buy me the six pack of beer
5:12
Speaker 4: and and I'll give you the check.
5:14
Speaker 8: So so there isn't a place to endorse it.
5:18
Speaker 4: So all you got out of it was it was
5:19
Speaker 4: some old Milwaukee Sorry buddy, sorry buddy.
5:21
Speaker 8: Hey Rob, And by the way, you get the good stuff.
5:24
Speaker 4: I do want to Well, I'm in Radio. I do
5:26
Speaker 4: want to mention though, please follow along on the Facebook
5:29
Speaker 4: page of ninety six one Superstar Country kW guess because
5:32
Speaker 4: Rob has been posting some beautiful pictures and they say,
5:35
Speaker 4: the experts tell us, Rob, this is the weekend or
5:37
Speaker 4: the next couple of days is the peak time to
5:39
Speaker 4: see the colors in West Virginia. Brother, you're seeing them?
5:42
Speaker 8: Oh man, The experts are right on the money. Mountain
5:45
Speaker 8: Mama has been showing off, and I have to give
5:48
Speaker 8: the hat tip to her because even with you know,
5:50
Speaker 8: cooler and only like sixty eight yesterday, it's still been
5:54
Speaker 8: fantastic weather for late October, and it looks as though
5:58
Speaker 8: she's going to be good to me all the way
5:59
Speaker 8: through Thursday. When I do finally get to WVU Medicine children.
6:03
Speaker 3: And Rob, you are you are a marine discharged from
6:07
Speaker 3: the United States. There's no such thing as an ex marine.
6:10
Speaker 3: I know that, but we are retired.
6:12
Speaker 4: Yeah.
6:13
Speaker 3: Does this remind you of your of your days back
6:16
Speaker 3: in the day of just humping it from here to there?
6:20
Speaker 8: I countless twenty mile marches with sixty pound field pack.
6:24
Speaker 8: So this is nothing for you, Well, it was nothing
6:28
Speaker 8: for me when I was twenty. I will be fifty
6:31
Speaker 8: one one week from today, and father time is undefeated.
6:36
Speaker 4: I'll just say that exactly, exactly. Lots of toil in all,
6:40
Speaker 4: my friend, lots of ivy profen be safe, and we
6:42
Speaker 4: discovered last week this is TMI for the radio. Welcome
6:45
Speaker 4: a board, Amelia. But last week his biggest problem was chafing.
6:49
Speaker 4: It was chafing. So the next gold bond gold, That's
6:52
Speaker 4: what I told Next year brought to you by Panhandle
6:54
Speaker 4: Cleaning and Restoration and gold bond, Yes, gold bond Medicaid power,
6:58
Speaker 4: as Paul Harvey used to say.
7:00
Speaker 8: Yeah, it's it's been Harry Chasin and the Cats and
7:03
Speaker 8: the Cradle.
7:03
Speaker 7: Yeah, meeting.
7:05
Speaker 4: All right. On that note, we're gonna let you go. Rob,
7:07
Speaker 4: be safe out there, gets you a little rest this weekend.
7:09
Speaker 4: He takes the weekend off, but he's not you know,
7:11
Speaker 4: I mean, he's still he needs it. He needs it
7:13
Speaker 4: and he's gonna arrive Halloween at WVU Children's Hospital with
7:17
Speaker 4: that check for up. It's a one hundred and seventy
7:19
Speaker 4: thousand dollars. So Rob, great job, man, be safe. We'll
7:22
Speaker 4: talk again on Monday, Buddy, Thanks a lot.
7:24
Speaker 8: Good Lord Willing and the Crik don't rise. Thank you.
7:26
Speaker 4: All right, let's talk to Chris Lawrence High School football,
7:29
Speaker 4: because you got a good one tonight with a Hurricane
7:32
Speaker 4: at Riverside, sir.
7:33
Speaker 3: Indeed, this is one where Riverside has just had hard
7:36
Speaker 3: luck all season long. They come into this game one
7:39
Speaker 3: and six and some key injuries to Riverside to just
7:43
Speaker 3: add to their troubles. But this is still a proud
7:45
Speaker 3: bunch in eastern Kanawa County and they would love nothing
7:48
Speaker 3: better than to pull the upset tonight and spoil this one.
7:51
Speaker 3: Hurricane has been in the situation before where you're facing
7:54
Speaker 3: a team that doesn't have the greatest record. You cannot
7:56
Speaker 3: allow yourself to look at that and have a letdown.
7:59
Speaker 3: And I talked to May last night and he said,
8:02
Speaker 3: you know, we focus on ourselves, not necessarily the opponent,
8:05
Speaker 3: and if you do that, you can really take care
8:07
Speaker 3: of business. And that's what they'll be doing tonight, is
8:10
Speaker 3: to just try and get better with every rep. And
8:14
Speaker 3: that's uh, you know. And the other thing that Hurricane
8:16
Speaker 3: has to guard against is overlooking this game tonight because
8:19
Speaker 3: they've got George Washington and Martinsburg to close out the
8:21
Speaker 3: regular season and can't be peeking ahead on that schedule.
8:25
Speaker 3: You got to get you got to keep keep your
8:26
Speaker 3: eye on the prize tonight down at Quincy. So we'll
8:29
Speaker 3: be on the air at seven o'clock Air and Parking
8:31
Speaker 3: and Parker and I will be there and have the
8:33
Speaker 3: game for you on WCHS Radio and on westernd and
8:35
Speaker 3: outdoors tomorrow. Oh my goodness, you asked me too quickly.
8:38
Speaker 3: I've got another really big deer story, this one from
8:43
Speaker 3: Kanawa County. It's the it's antlerless Hunting weekend, and I
8:47
Speaker 3: got a couple of stories regarding that. One is, uh,
8:52
Speaker 3: this organization called Warriors in the Field always has an
8:56
Speaker 3: event around the antlerless Steer hitting Days where they take
8:59
Speaker 3: veterans hunting, so we'll be we'll check in with them.
9:02
Speaker 3: And also the Governor's One Shot Hunt is this weekend,
9:07
Speaker 3: which is one of the major fundraisers for the Hunter's
9:10
Speaker 3: Helping the Hungry program. We'll talk to Glenn Adrian who
9:13
Speaker 3: is the chairman of that, and we'll get a perspective
9:17
Speaker 3: on the Governor's One Shot Hunt that'll be taking place
9:21
Speaker 3: this weekend as well, plus some other stuff.
9:23
Speaker 4: So you need to check it out tomorrow, all right,
9:24
Speaker 4: Chris appreciate it man, all right, dude, thanks to Chris
9:27
Speaker 4: Lawrence again. He and Aaron will have coverage tonight of
9:30
Speaker 4: the Hurricane at Riverside game that's on five ADWCCHS on
9:34
Speaker 4: ninety six one KWS, though Tom Bragg and Matt Murphy
9:38
Speaker 4: will have the call as Hoover entertains Elkins. As I said,
9:41
Speaker 4: Tom a little tied up this morning, but we do
9:43
Speaker 4: have Matt Murphy in the producer studio now putting on
9:45
Speaker 4: his sports hat. So Matt, are you pretty excited about
9:50
Speaker 4: this game tonight? Buddy? Yeah, this is gonna be a
9:51
Speaker 4: good one.
9:52
Speaker 10: Five and three Elkins Tigers are coming into town. Oddly enough,
9:56
Speaker 10: even though we've still got three weeks left on the season,
9:59
Speaker 10: tonight is seeing in Elkins. The last two games of
10:02
Speaker 10: the season for the Huskies are going to be on
10:04
Speaker 10: the road, so this is the last one at least
10:07
Speaker 10: until probably the playoffs for the Huskies tonight. But Huskies
10:11
Speaker 10: are currently seven and oh on the season. They're taking
10:14
Speaker 10: on the five and three Elkins Tigers. So Huskies have
10:18
Speaker 10: just been having a really great season. Dane Hatfield SEENI
10:21
Speaker 10: your quarterback has been setting records left and right, up there,
10:24
Speaker 10: and I'm sure he is going to pile on some
10:27
Speaker 10: more yardage onto that tonight as well.
10:29
Speaker 4: All right, and we'll be listening. Murphy. I do appreciate it, man,
10:32
Speaker 4: because I know you were kind of a little probably
10:34
Speaker 4: a little bit tired after doing Trick or Beat last night.
10:36
Speaker 4: I'm gonna talk about that a little bit later on.
10:37
Speaker 10: Yeah, that was that was a bit much last night.
10:39
Speaker 4: Eight million children last night over at Gomark.
10:41
Speaker 10: Ballpark, nine and a half million, and it's going The
10:44
Speaker 10: numbers were going up.
10:46
Speaker 4: It's like Trump rally numbers. They go up every time
10:49
Speaker 4: he tells the story.
10:50
Speaker 10: Let me tell you what I feel for Rob Reel
10:53
Speaker 10: because I walked thirty one thousand steps yesterday and at
10:57
Speaker 10: the end of the night, all I could think to
10:58
Speaker 10: myself was, is this is how Rob feels?
11:01
Speaker 4: Because this is terrible? Yeah, indeed it is. But we
11:05
Speaker 4: at least you get to sit down and do the
11:06
Speaker 4: game tonight, I guess right. Absolutely.
11:08
Speaker 10: Kickoff is at seven o'clock, Tom and I'll take on
11:11
Speaker 10: the pregame at about six fifty five on ninety six
11:14
Speaker 10: to one KWS and ninety six to one KWS dot com.
11:17
Speaker 4: All right, we'll get we'll be listening tonight. I'll give
11:20
Speaker 4: you an opportunity to get to Hannah Gardner up and
11:23
Speaker 4: running a Murphy. I appreciated man, Thanks a lot.
11:25
Speaker 6: Uh.
11:25

12:15
Speaker 7: Absolutely.
12:15
Speaker 4: Let's bring in Hannah Gardner for the Cannell Charleston Humane
12:18
Speaker 4: Association with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the Week. Hannah,
12:21
Speaker 4: good morning, welcome to the show.
12:23
Speaker 11: Good morning, how are you.
12:24
Speaker 4: I'm fine, And I've got a million nicely on here
12:27
Speaker 4: from West Virginia. Watch. And when I was talking to
12:29
Speaker 4: her the other day, I said, would you like to
12:31
Speaker 4: come in a little bit early to talk to me
12:33
Speaker 4: with Hannah? And she said could I? This is my
12:36
Speaker 4: dream come true? And I think it's all about the dogs, right,
12:40
Speaker 4: A million Yes.
12:40
Speaker 11: Such a cute dog.
12:41
Speaker 4: Such a cute dog We've got as always Our pets
12:45
Speaker 4: photo is posted on x on the artist formally known
12:48
Speaker 4: as Twitter on a Dave A seventy that's the handle,
12:50
Speaker 4: and also on my radio page, Dave Allen Radio. The
12:54
Speaker 4: dog's name is Stempy. Hannah tell us about Stimpy?
12:58
Speaker 11: All right, Well, is a very very very sweet boy.
13:02
Speaker 11: He's very very friendly. He is kids friendly from what
13:06
Speaker 11: we know, and of course even if we know that
13:10
Speaker 11: for sure, we always advise caution, never leave him alone
13:13
Speaker 11: for the first at least three months, I would say,
13:16
Speaker 11: just so that way they can get acclimated used to
13:18
Speaker 11: the way your routines are, your life's about all of that,
13:21
Speaker 11: and then you never know what makes the dog uncomfortable.
13:24
Speaker 11: It's kind of like bringing a stranger into your house,
13:26
Speaker 11: so you never know, so just always be cautious. But
13:29
Speaker 11: he is three years old. He is neutered already, so
13:32
Speaker 11: he's ready to go home already. He is available for
13:37
Speaker 11: fostering if anybody wants to foster him and get him
13:40
Speaker 11: out of the shelter for a little bit. You could
13:42
Speaker 11: even foster and if you fall in love with him,
13:45
Speaker 11: then you can adopt him over the phone, or you
13:47
Speaker 11: could come up and adopt him, whichever you prefer. But
13:49
Speaker 11: he is a very very good boy. He is micro
13:52
Speaker 11: chipped and vaccinated, so he is all up to date
13:55
Speaker 11: on that. I do believe he has his rabie vaccine
13:58
Speaker 11: as well. And he is fifty pounds, or at least
14:02
Speaker 11: he was about a month ago, I think, so he
14:06
Speaker 11: could be a little bit more than that, but I
14:09
Speaker 11: would say he could be a little bit more or less,
14:11
Speaker 11: but I would say he's around the same. How does
14:14
Speaker 11: he do really really good boy?
14:16
Speaker 9: How does he do on the leash?
14:18
Speaker 11: He is a He does really really good on the leash.
14:21
Speaker 11: He does pool a little bit, but that's usually just
14:23
Speaker 11: like when he gets distracted or see something else. He's
14:27
Speaker 11: pretty good on the leash, though he doesn't really pool
14:30
Speaker 11: too hard. However, I will say he is deaf. That's
14:33
Speaker 11: a big factor to mention. He cannot hear. I don't
14:37
Speaker 11: think he can hear at all. I think he's completely deaf.
14:39
Speaker 11: But he listens very well to like your hand signals.
14:44
Speaker 11: And I don't know what all he may know, if
14:46
Speaker 11: he knew anything prior to coming to the shelter or anything,
14:50
Speaker 11: but he does listen pretty well. Or I guess he
14:54
Speaker 11: just kind of watches you pretty well and just listens
14:56
Speaker 11: to like your body movements and stuff like that. He's
15:00
Speaker 11: a very very good boy. He's a social butterfly. We
15:02
Speaker 11: do have him in play groups with a bunch of
15:04
Speaker 11: other dogs, and he is very playful. He is great
15:09
Speaker 11: and thrives around other energetic dogs. So he would be
15:13
Speaker 11: a good companion for someone who has another playful, friendly
15:17
Speaker 11: dog who has the time and patience to work with
15:19
Speaker 11: a deaf dog to learn the ins and outs of
15:22
Speaker 11: a deaf dog. And we can always give you resources
15:25
Speaker 11: and help with any of that as well.
15:27
Speaker 4: I will remind you this today Vallan Chilling five. Any
15:30
Speaker 4: Life is brought to you a part by Morgan and Morgan,
15:31
Speaker 4: America's largest injury law firm. Handah got a text here
15:34
Speaker 4: waiting on you when you got here this morning as
15:36
Speaker 4: you normally do, it says, I have wondered about this
15:39
Speaker 4: for a while. Any idea why you can't scan an
15:42
Speaker 4: animal for a chip with your phone instead of taking
15:45
Speaker 4: it to a velt, to a vet or a shelter.
15:50
Speaker 11: That is interesting. I don't know if it has anything
15:52
Speaker 11: to do with like certain things inside of these phones
15:57
Speaker 11: or not. So I don't know if that would like
15:58
Speaker 11: affect the phone, don't. I have no idea, but I
16:02
Speaker 11: will say that it would also be I don't really
16:07
Speaker 11: know if it has anything to do with privacy or not, like,
16:09
Speaker 11: because typically when you take it to a shelter or
16:11
Speaker 11: clinic or something like that, the staff members there will
16:15
Speaker 11: contact the people. But I do think that some places
16:19
Speaker 11: do tell you, so I'm not one hundred percent sure
16:21
Speaker 11: on that one, but we could definitely find out. It's
16:24
Speaker 11: something that would be interesting.
16:26
Speaker 4: So you had an event last week out of Dutch Miller,
16:30
Speaker 4: tell me how that win was an adoption of it?
16:32
Speaker 4: How did that go?
16:33
Speaker 11: Yes, that went absolutely great. I think we did thirty
16:37
Speaker 11: five adoptions while we were there.
16:39
Speaker 4: Good stuff.
16:41
Speaker 11: Yeah, and then they were very very great up there.
16:44
Speaker 11: They always help out. It was amazing. We had a
16:46
Speaker 11: lot of people out there to just see the dog,
16:50
Speaker 11: then to also just adopt the dog. So definitely worth it.
16:53
Speaker 11: We're glad we go every year and we're very thankful
16:56
Speaker 11: for it.
16:56
Speaker 4: How are we looking on numbers as far as what
16:58
Speaker 4: you've got in the shelter.
17:01
Speaker 11: I'm pretty sure we're still either max or over or
17:05
Speaker 11: at capacity. I know I heard yesterday there was only
17:08
Speaker 11: like one channel open entirely, so it's probably filled by now.
17:14
Speaker 11: But we are just doing our best to try to
17:17
Speaker 11: figure out ways to help get animals out, even if
17:20
Speaker 11: that means us going to other events that we may
17:24
Speaker 11: have to like plan schedule to try to help get
17:26
Speaker 11: them adopted, get them seen, get them out. Fostering adopting, volunteering,
17:30
Speaker 11: anything like that helps out. We are in need of
17:33
Speaker 11: any extra help that we can get. I think that
17:37
Speaker 11: we're still hiring too as well, So if you wanted
17:40
Speaker 11: to come in and fill out an application, fill out
17:42
Speaker 11: any volunteer information, adoption information, come on up. We also,
17:47
Speaker 11: of course love the donations that come in and appreciate
17:50
Speaker 11: those as well. And we are always in need of
17:53
Speaker 11: pretty much everything, I will say, especially where we have
17:55
Speaker 11: a full house right now.
17:57
Speaker 4: All right, and they're always in need of things like
17:59
Speaker 4: washcloth and sheets and old rugs and things like that.
18:03
Speaker 4: You can take any of that stuff.
18:04
Speaker 11: Hannah, Yes, yes, sheets, blankets, cows, old quotes, comforters, anything
18:10
Speaker 11: like that we will take. I will say, we have
18:13
Speaker 11: had like people bring in multiple, multiple, multiple bags of
18:16
Speaker 11: like pillows and stuff like that. We will take like
18:19
Speaker 11: one or two maybe like flats, bigger pillows, but we
18:22
Speaker 11: typically don't use like the throw pillow, little throw pillo
18:25
Speaker 11: stuff like that, just because they don't really they're too
18:29
Speaker 11: small for than delay on one and then they two
18:31
Speaker 11: of them, So we don't please pillows, but blankets, all
18:34
Speaker 11: that stuff.
18:35
Speaker 4: We do, all right, Hannah. We will talk to you
18:37
Speaker 4: again next week, thanks.
18:38
Speaker 11: A lot, Thank you.
18:41
Speaker 4: I had a gardener from the Canal Charleston Human Association, Stimpy.
18:44
Speaker 4: Amelia is the dog this week. Stimpy.
18:47
Speaker 6: He was so cute and this Halloween costume in the photo.
18:49
Speaker 4: Yeah, and so if if you want to see that
18:51
Speaker 4: photo that we're talking about again, you can just go
18:54
Speaker 4: on over to Dave Allen Radio and Facebook or at
18:57
Speaker 4: Dave A seventy on Twitter. Stimpy's three years old, around
19:00
Speaker 4: fifty pounds. He is neutered, he is deaf, so he
19:03
Speaker 4: needs someone who can be patient with him. And I thought, Amelia,
19:06
Speaker 4: I thought it was kind of interesting that, you know,
19:09
Speaker 4: when they got him. You don't know what the dog's
19:10
Speaker 4: history is. Obviously he can't tell you so, but he
19:14
Speaker 4: seems to react well to hand signals, so maybe somebody
19:18
Speaker 4: and I don't know what his backstory was how he
19:19
Speaker 4: got there, but maybe somebody has worked with him in
19:22
Speaker 4: the past. And he's still relatively young, so maybe you
19:25
Speaker 4: could teach him some things.
19:26
Speaker 6: Yeah. Absolutely, And the fact that he play so well
19:28
Speaker 6: with children and other dogs, he must just be very malleable.
19:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, able to go with the fluff. Beautiful, beautiful dog.
19:33
Speaker 4: Stimpy three years old, around fifty pounds. He is neutered
19:35
Speaker 4: and deaf, microchipped and vaccinated, very playful, loves other dogs
19:40
Speaker 4: and kids. Let's try to get stimpy adopted all right?

22:39
Speaker 13: I've loved it.
22:39
Speaker 6: I mean, I've listened, but it's nice to be here
22:41
Speaker 6: and see it in person. I've known Chris for a while.
22:43
Speaker 4: So you think about the new digs here, Huh.
22:45
Speaker 6: It looks great in here, looks great.
22:47
Speaker 4: Once we learn how to operate everything, it'll be even better.
22:50
Speaker 4: And then by that time we'll be ready to move
22:52
Speaker 4: because if we were just back into the old studio
22:54

22:55

22:57
Speaker 4: down there and see what it looks like. But we're
22:59
Speaker 4: having fun with it. I do want to give a
23:01
Speaker 4: big shout out to everybody who came out last night
23:03
Speaker 4: for the Selango Law Trick or Beat over at Gomart Ballpark. I,
23:07
Speaker 4: as Rob mentioned, wasn't there last night. I was in
23:09
Speaker 4: the beautiful town of Eleanor for the Career Fair at
23:13
Speaker 4: the Putnam Career Technical Center over on our sister station
23:15
Speaker 4: k WUS. But I want to talk about trick or Beat.
23:18
Speaker 4: Everyone here tells me it was great. Something like three
23:20
Speaker 4: to five thousand. I mean came again somewhere in that neighborhood,
23:23
Speaker 4: came through the gates last night, County, the kids and
23:25
Speaker 4: the parents and whatnot. Big shout out to Selango Law
23:28
Speaker 4: and all the other sponsors who made it happened.
23:30
Speaker 12: It was.
23:31
Speaker 4: It was a great event last night. We're still stealing
23:33
Speaker 4: people's pictures on social media right now. We've got some
23:36
Speaker 4: posted on I've got some on Dave Island Radio, and
23:38
Speaker 4: it'll be more to go up throughout the day. But
23:40
Speaker 4: it was indeed a great event.
23:42
Speaker 6: It looked so crowded and fun. My kids preschool had
23:46
Speaker 6: their tri or treat last night, so we couldn't make
23:47
Speaker 6: it over. There was so sad that the photos I saw, Man,
23:49
Speaker 6: it was packed, looks like and great weather.
23:52
Speaker 4: Oh you couldn't beat the weather. Absolutely right about that,
23:54
Speaker 4: but again thank you to everybody who came out and
23:56
Speaker 4: made the entire thing possible. The next thing over at
23:58
Speaker 4: the Gulf at the ballpark, will be watching will be
24:02
Speaker 4: the light the night And talked to Jay Silverman about
24:05
Speaker 4: that the other day. I mean, they've got like double
24:07
Speaker 4: the lights that they had last year, and we'll be
24:09
Speaker 4: giving you more information on that. You can always visit
24:12
Speaker 4: the Dirty Birds website dirtybirds baseball dot com if you
24:15
Speaker 4: need more information there. I Amelia last night. You know,
24:18
Speaker 4: we hear so much in West Virginia about the lack
24:21
Speaker 4: of opportunities and the lack of jobs, and a lot
24:23
Speaker 4: of that is warranted. I completely understand that. But last
24:26
Speaker 4: night I had an opportunity to pinch at for rob
24:29
Speaker 4: on KWS to go to the Putnam Career and Technical
24:32
Speaker 4: Center over in Eleanor last night where they had this
24:35
Speaker 4: job fair and it wasn't just a job fair, it
24:37
Speaker 4: was kind of an open house that they did over there,
24:40
Speaker 4: and they estimated well over at any given time, well
24:43
Speaker 4: over a thousand people or in and out of that building.
24:45
Speaker 4: And we're talking about some major hitters here that were
24:49
Speaker 4: over there last night. People like new Core, CAMC, Appalachian Power,
24:54
Speaker 4: Various police and emergency folks were over there, the Green
24:58
Speaker 4: Bus company, folks actually with the high school, with the
25:00
Speaker 4: guy who's doing some of the recruiting there. Good buddy,
25:02
Speaker 4: my name is Jimmy Perry. Jimmy was over there last night.
25:07
Speaker 4: So you know, I understand that in West Virginian you
25:10
Speaker 4: cover a lot of this. We have a lot of issues,
25:12
Speaker 4: but there are jobs available out there and employers are
25:16
Speaker 4: begging for people. And that's what I got in talking.
25:20
Speaker 4: I sit down with the Morgan Tinny who's the executive
25:23
Speaker 4: director of the Putnam Development Authority, did a little interview
25:25
Speaker 4: with Chris featured on the Morning News this morning. They're
25:29
Speaker 4: just begging, they're begging for people, and we've got to
25:32
Speaker 4: figure out, in my opinion, how to build a bridge here.
25:37
Speaker 4: You know, and events like this are a good are
25:39
Speaker 4: good part of it, because many people showed up with
25:41
Speaker 4: you know, resumes in hand, you know, ready ready to
25:43
Speaker 4: go to work. But we kind of do a better
25:45
Speaker 4: job somehow of bridging these two things together.
25:48
Speaker 6: And I think we also have to to start advertising
25:51
Speaker 6: these jobs younger so that West Virginians feel like they
25:53
Speaker 6: can stay and get high paying jobs. Right. Brain drain
25:56
Speaker 6: is our biggest problem, I think, and or certainly one
26:00
Speaker 6: of our biggest problems. So I think it's great that
26:02
Speaker 6: they're trying to connect with younger West Virginians. But I
26:05
Speaker 6: think even in middle school, we've got to start saying,
26:07
Speaker 6: here's a path for you to get a high paying job.
26:09
Speaker 4: And we were talking. I was talking with Steve Animal
26:12
Speaker 4: about this a little bit earlier this morning. Animal, for
26:14
Speaker 4: once and I had a serious conversation. Believe it or not,
26:17
Speaker 4: we do from time to time, but we were talking
26:20
Speaker 4: about both of us. And he's a little older than
26:22
Speaker 4: I am. Okay, he's a lot older than I am.
26:24
Speaker 4: But Animal and I were talking that both of us
26:27
Speaker 4: being radio geeks, we knew I do in third grade
26:30
Speaker 4: what I wanted to do. I wanted to be on
26:31
Speaker 4: the radio, that's what. Or if it wasn't radio, it
26:34
Speaker 4: was television or something related to entertainment media, so on
26:37
Speaker 4: and so forth. Animal was the same way. And it
26:40
Speaker 4: would have been nice. And I had some great teachers
26:43
Speaker 4: in the seventies and eighties, don't get me wrong, but
26:45
Speaker 4: it would have been nice had somebody been able to
26:48
Speaker 4: see that in me and say well, let's get him
26:50
Speaker 4: in classes that or more. And again, it's not knock
26:53
Speaker 4: against the education system back then. It just wasn't done
26:56
Speaker 4: anywhere in any field back then. But a lot of
26:59
Speaker 4: great friend of mine from junior high in high school
27:01
Speaker 4: who was rebuilding car engines when he was in the
27:03
Speaker 4: seventh grade. He was taking apart cars and putting stuff
27:07
Speaker 4: back together again. And I'm thinking somebody could have got
27:10
Speaker 4: him then as opposed to when he was in eleventh
27:12
Speaker 4: or twelfth grade, and got him into some of these
27:14
Speaker 4: programs at an early earlier age. And he turned out fine,
27:17
Speaker 4: but he could have probably been turned out more finer
27:20
Speaker 4: for lack of a better term, if he'd have been
27:23
Speaker 4: able to do that a little a little earlier.
27:25
Speaker 6: This wouldn't necessarily help with journalism, because I, like you,
27:28
Speaker 6: I kind of knew in high school was interested in writing,
27:30
Speaker 6: but didn't find it until college, right because we didn't
27:32
Speaker 6: have a newspaper at my high school. But I think
27:35
Speaker 6: something cool that has happened in my journey into adulthood
27:39
Speaker 6: is that votech and those types of careers have become
27:42
Speaker 6: very promoted and accessible. Our legislature has put money into that,
27:46
Speaker 6: and I think that's a good thing for West Virginians.
27:48
Speaker 7: Right.
27:49
Speaker 6: Not everyone is going to go to a four year college,
27:51
Speaker 6: and I kind of like that. I think it's become
27:53
Speaker 6: more normalized and even encouraged to pursue these other careers
27:58
Speaker 6: because I think at least when I was in high school,
27:59
Speaker 6: it was like, you have to go to for your jeal.
28:01
Speaker 4: That's what they told us.
28:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I still definitely support that, right, But I
28:04
Speaker 6: think it's cool to see that there's a lot of
28:07
Speaker 6: growth in the Votech industry and trying to reach out
28:09
Speaker 6: to young West Virginia.
28:10
Speaker 4: And some of the programs that they offer over there
28:13
Speaker 4: at the at the Votech Center in a career at
28:16
Speaker 4: technical center, I guess we're in Eleanor Putnam County. I
28:19
Speaker 4: mean this. The school has won national awards the teacher
28:22
Speaker 4: of the Year in that particular field. I interviewed her
28:25
Speaker 4: last night. She is over the culinary program over there,
28:28
Speaker 4: and that's a growing industry. When Steve and I were
28:30
Speaker 4: talking about that earlier this morning. With everything with AI whatever,
28:34
Speaker 4: girl's going to have to have people to actually make food.
28:37
Speaker 4: You know, you're always going to have to have that
28:38
Speaker 4: you can order on a kiosk if you go fast food,
28:40
Speaker 4: but somebody's got to make it, you know what I mean.
28:42
Speaker 4: And that's a grown field that they've got kids that
28:44
Speaker 4: are in forensics programs over there now. They're in, you know,
28:47
Speaker 4: in tenth eleventh grade and they're already studying forensics. A
28:51
Speaker 4: lignement programs with guarantee placement. One of the sponsors of
28:54
Speaker 4: this show's Bridge Valley, and they've got these different programs
28:57
Speaker 4: with Toyota and things like that. They you graduate on Thursday.
29:00
Speaker 4: By Friday, you're on the line working making making ninety
29:06
Speaker 4: thousand dollars at eighteen years old. I mean, it's incredible.
29:09
Speaker 4: So they do great work over there, and you'll be
29:12
Speaker 4: hearing a whole lot more about those folks. Dave Allen

29:19
Speaker 4: to take your call. This beautiful listing in Scott deeposts

Speaker 4: seventy five point Zetia Drive, fifty six hundred square foot homes,
29:26
Speaker 4: six bedrooms and more. It's got two laundry rooms, full
29:29
Speaker 4: house generator, just a fantastic looking house. Caller texts my
29:32
Speaker 4: good friend Rich, the realtor three zero four nine three
29:35
Speaker 4: two seventy four eighty eight. Let him tell you more
29:37
Speaker 4: about this property. Rich will be on the show on
29:39
Speaker 4: Tuesday taking your questions if you have real estate questions.
29:42
Speaker 4: I do want to mention this a little program we
29:45
Speaker 4: note here on the day before the election, and that
29:47
Speaker 4: would be Monday, November the fourth, We're gonna do something
29:50
Speaker 4: special here on the show. I have invited the two
29:52
Speaker 4: candidates for Canawa County Commission, Democrat Natalie Tenant and Republican
29:56
Speaker 4: Chris Walters, for a little little sit down, Amelia. Not
29:59
Speaker 4: a debate. Uh, We've agreed upon that the three of us.
30:02
Speaker 4: It's going to be a forum where we're just going
30:04
Speaker 4: to talk about the issues and what each plans to
30:07
Speaker 4: do if they are elected to the Canawa County Commission.
30:11
Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be a lot of fun and
30:13
Speaker 4: the way we're going to do this as far as
30:15
Speaker 4: interaction with listeners, listeners on that day are welcome to
30:18
Speaker 4: text into the show. But I'm gonna go ahead and
30:20
Speaker 4: tell you right now, okay, and I don't want to
30:22
Speaker 4: make anybody mad. I'm not going to ask either one
30:24
Speaker 4: of them if they think that Trump lost the election
30:26
Speaker 4: or won the election. I'm not going to ask about
30:28
Speaker 4: national issues. That's not what county commissioners do, so it's
30:31
Speaker 4: not and we're not going to take name calling and
30:33
Speaker 4: that kind of stuff. If you have a legitimate question
30:36
Speaker 4: about a public works project or whatever, then we'll talk
30:40
Speaker 4: to miss Tenant and mister Walters about that. Again, it'll
30:44
Speaker 4: be the day after the election. But if you want
30:46
Speaker 4: to get questions in ahead of time, before the texting time,
30:49
Speaker 4: I would appreciate it. You can just email me. My
30:52
Speaker 4: email address is Dave dot Allen at wvradio dot com.
30:55
Speaker 4: Dave dot allenwvradio dot com. Get send him in all
30:59
Speaker 4: next week and then on the a week from Monday,
31:01
Speaker 4: which is the Monday for election day, we're gonna spend
31:03
Speaker 4: about thirty minutes or so, thirty or forty talking to
31:07
Speaker 4: Natalie Tenant, the Democratic nominee for County commission and Chris
31:10
Speaker 4: Walter is the Republican nominee. And I think it's going
31:13
Speaker 4: to be pretty good. I had a text I mentioned
31:15
Speaker 4: that yesterday on the show, and I don't know if
31:17
Speaker 4: I can pull it up right now or not, but
31:20
Speaker 4: I had a text to the show that here it is.
31:25
Speaker 4: This was from yesterday to day. Many audience members can
31:27
Speaker 4: learn a lot from the Tenant Walters camps that there's
31:30
Speaker 4: no reason to hate, insult, or smear the other side.
31:33
Speaker 6: I love to hear that. Seems like it's been a
31:35
Speaker 6: very clean race between them, and I'm looking forward to
31:38
Speaker 6: that set down that you're gonna have the what's one
31:41
Speaker 6: issue you're interested in hearing them talk about?
31:43
Speaker 4: Well, I'm just gonna you know, I'm when I have
31:45
Speaker 4: each of them, you know, just state what is it
31:47
Speaker 4: that you want to wear? Infrastructure, things that infrastructure, the
31:51
Speaker 4: age old things, you know, getting people. You know, Kaawa
31:53
Speaker 4: County has suffered a major population loss, and not everybody's
31:58
Speaker 4: moving out of state, many or choosing to move to
31:59
Speaker 4: a counties. They're moving to Putnam County, they're moving to
32:02
Speaker 4: the eastern Panhandle. What can they do as a county commissioner?
32:05
Speaker 4: I mean they're not miracle workers, but what can they
32:07
Speaker 4: do to try to get some of these people to
32:09
Speaker 4: stay here? Just you name it all over the board.
32:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, I think those are great questions. And I think
32:15
Speaker 6: too just addressing some of the safety concerns I know
32:18
Speaker 6: people have had, and infrastructure is key. I mean, with
32:21
Speaker 6: what we've seen happen on the West Side with water
32:24
Speaker 6: and the gas all those things. I think they'll be
32:25
Speaker 6: interesting to hear their thoughts on that as well.
32:27

36:42
Speaker 4: on the show before and maybe glossed over what exactly
36:45
Speaker 4: is West Virginia Watch?
36:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, thanks for asking. We are a nonprofit newsroom serving
36:49
Speaker 6: the whole state of West Virginia. We are for women,
36:53
Speaker 6: which is really cool. We have all been in West Virginia. Gosh,
36:56
Speaker 6: some of us more than a decade doing news, and
37:00
Speaker 6: our content is free no paywall on West Virginia watch
37:02
Speaker 6: dot com. And we also give our content for free
37:05
Speaker 6: to newspapers around the state. So I saw this morning
37:08
Speaker 6: that one of my stories was on the front page
37:10
Speaker 6: of the Fairmont newspaper, which I love. As part of
37:12
Speaker 6: our mission to help support our local papers as well,
37:14
Speaker 6: and we mostly focus on state government, the legislature and
37:17
Speaker 6: other issues around.
37:17
Speaker 4: The state and good stuff. Be sure and check that out,
37:20
Speaker 4: all right. Early voting is underway. Are you an early
37:22
Speaker 4: voter or an election day type person?
37:24
Speaker 6: So I'm usually an election day type person. Then I
37:26
Speaker 6: go to work and cover the elections and eat pizza
37:29
Speaker 6: like a good journalist. Right, But this year I am
37:31
Speaker 6: going to early votes. I can take my daughters. They
37:34
Speaker 6: did the primary voting with me and my six and
37:37
Speaker 6: my four year old. They were like, when are we voting?
37:39
Speaker 6: They're excited, So I'm going to early vote.
37:41
Speaker 4: All right. Let me just tell you one thing though.
37:44
Speaker 4: Don't take pictures, yes, inside the polling place.
37:46
Speaker 6: I do now.
37:47
Speaker 4: I learned something in my time at Secretary States. Obvious
37:49
Speaker 4: you cannot photograph inside. It is against the law. The
37:52
Speaker 4: photograph inside the polling Plint.
37:53
Speaker 11: That is true.
37:54
Speaker 6: You can, however, take your phone to use a sample
37:57
Speaker 6: ballot if you made notes on your phone or whatever,
37:59
Speaker 6: so you can take your phone out. But you're right,
38:00
Speaker 6: you cannot take any photo.
38:01
Speaker 4: Don't take pictures. Tex says one issue for both ten
38:04
Speaker 4: and Walters has to be about the homeless vagrant problem
38:07
Speaker 4: that has expanded far beyond Charleston. Something has to be done.
38:10
Speaker 4: Small drivels here and there like this, or how both
38:13
Speaker 4: Seattle and Portland started. They are now both out of
38:15
Speaker 4: control with the homeless, doped up zombies out on the streets.
38:19
Speaker 4: I will get that comment to them. So if you're
38:21
Speaker 4: listening now, and I know they listen to the show,
38:23
Speaker 4: Walters and Tenant, here's your first thing right there. We're
38:25
Speaker 4: a week and a couple of days away that somebody
38:28
Speaker 4: wants you to work on. Speaking of voting, Amelia, you
38:31
Speaker 4: have a story out about motivating people to vote. Let's
38:34
Speaker 4: talk about that.
38:35
Speaker 6: Yeah, so we were saying just a few minutes ago,
38:37
Speaker 6: we've seen great numbers on early voting around the state,
38:40
Speaker 6: but West Virginia overall has abysmal voter turnout. The twenty
38:43
Speaker 6: twenty election, we were the second worst voter turnout in
38:47
Speaker 6: the country, with about fifty five percent around there turning
38:52
Speaker 6: up showing out to vote, but in some counties you
38:54
Speaker 6: had less than thirty percent turnout. So I think it's
38:58
Speaker 6: a mixture of issues. Apathy toward political parties, a feeling
39:02
Speaker 6: that we're going to go for Trump, so why vote? Also,
39:05
Speaker 6: I think, you know, poverty, lack of transportation play into
39:08
Speaker 6: it as well. So for county level political parties, they
39:12
Speaker 6: are really trying to motivate those voters because we've had
39:14
Speaker 6: so many counties flip to red, and in some of
39:17
Speaker 6: these counties you've got just a thousand registrations separating Democrats
39:20
Speaker 6: and Republicans.
39:22
Speaker 17: So while it is expected that the state.
39:24
Speaker 6: May give their electoral votes to Trump, in these legislative races,
39:28
Speaker 6: those votes really make a difference, and so county local
39:31
Speaker 6: level people have to really motivate their people to come.
39:33
Speaker 4: Out and vote. And what I have noticed as a
39:36
Speaker 4: trend over the last couple of years, really since sin
39:38
Speaker 4: since Trump came into power so to speak, when he
39:41
Speaker 4: was first elected, is and I've used this example on
39:44
Speaker 4: the show many many times. Listeners are probably tired of
39:46
Speaker 4: hearing it, but you can't run for the assessor of
39:48
Speaker 4: Wetssell County that you don't say I stand beside President Trump. No,
39:52
Speaker 4: you don't. I mean you don't because he doesn't really
39:56
Speaker 4: put a lot of emphasis on the assessor's race on
39:59
Speaker 4: Wetssell County, you know. But that's a selling point, and
40:01
Speaker 4: we saw that in the primary. I'm more Trumpier than
40:04
Speaker 4: you are, you know, Trump les Memore. No, trump les Memore.
40:07
Speaker 4: He likes me, Moore. Kind of a thing.
40:08
Speaker 6: Presidential elections merging with local elections are tricky because I've
40:12
Speaker 6: seen some mailers and some ads where certain positions are saying,
40:16
Speaker 6: you know, I'm tough on the border, I'm going to
40:17
Speaker 6: be tough on this, and it's like that has nothing
40:19
Speaker 6: to do absolutely in particular job that you are being
40:21
Speaker 6: elected to do. And also West Virginia is not short
40:24
Speaker 6: on issues that need addressed legislatively or in your local commission,
40:28
Speaker 6: whatever it is. So yeah, it can be I think
40:31
Speaker 6: certainly difficult for voters to say, what exactly are you
40:34
Speaker 6: going to do to help me here in Whatsell.
40:36
Speaker 17: Or in Parkinsburg or wherever.
40:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, and again, politics has become we can spend an
40:42
Speaker 4: entire four or five days talking about this Amelia. Politics
40:45
Speaker 4: has become so nationalized now. And I've got a little
40:49
Speaker 4: age on me more than you do. I don't remember
40:52
Speaker 4: back when I the first election I voted in was
40:55
Speaker 4: nineteen eighty eight. I do not remember at that time
40:59
Speaker 4: House of down like it's people candidates for sheriff, candidates
41:02
Speaker 4: for even governor calling out whoever was in the White
41:07
Speaker 4: House or whoever they wanted in the White House, saying,
41:09
Speaker 4: you know that a vote for a vote for this
41:11
Speaker 4: person is a vote for this, you know, this other
41:13
Speaker 4: person in Washington. It's just becomes so so nationalized now.
41:18
Speaker 4: And that a lot of it has to do with
41:19
Speaker 4: the thing, very thing we hold in her hand, which
41:22
Speaker 4: is which is a phone. Everybody stays connected twenty four hours.
41:25
Speaker 4: I'm all about the information age, but it's also known
41:28
Speaker 4: as the misinformation age, because, as you well know, there's
41:31
Speaker 4: more sources now to get information, and there's more sources
41:33
Speaker 4: to give you crap information out there too.
41:36
Speaker 6: Absolutely, And I mean if you look at Patrick Morrissey,
41:38
Speaker 6: who's running for Governor's Republican, you look at Jim Justice
41:41
Speaker 6: who's running for the US Senate, they both have been campaigning. Well,
41:45
Speaker 6: certainly Jim Justice has been campaigning for Trump and Morrissey's
41:48
Speaker 6: one of his things. He says, I think the most
41:51
Speaker 6: I hear is I was the biggest supporter for Trump
41:53
Speaker 6: in West Virginia, the first to come out and support him,
41:55
Speaker 6: and so they've kind of contributed to that rhetoric as well.
41:58
Speaker 6: I think it's really interesting that Jim Justice has done
42:01
Speaker 6: not that much campaigning on foot. He has the weekly
42:05
Speaker 6: press briefings, but he hasn't really traveled the state as much.
42:08
Speaker 6: But he has gone to Pennsylvania with baby Dog and
42:11
Speaker 6: campaigned for Donald Trump.
42:13
Speaker 4: Got to have the dog out there. He did tell
42:15
Speaker 4: Glenn Elliott to kiss baby Dog's high.
42:17
Speaker 6: He did say that I hope whoever is governor next
42:21
Speaker 6: year does not lift up a dog close to the
42:23
Speaker 6: press table. Again, I think we're good on that one.
42:25
Speaker 4: Tech said Amelia's thoughts on locking out independence in coming
42:29
Speaker 4: Republican primaries, Well.
42:32
Speaker 6: I think that's something we're going to have to grapple
42:34
Speaker 6: with as a state. We're seeing a rising number of
42:36
Speaker 6: independent registrations in this state, and I was looking at
42:40
Speaker 6: county level data in some of these counties where Republican
42:43
Speaker 6: and Democrats aren't that far away, you still have a
42:45
Speaker 6: significant amount of people who have switched over to independence.
42:47
Speaker 6: It's not that they're just flipping from DEM to Republican,
42:49
Speaker 6: Republican to DEM. So that might be something we see
42:54
Speaker 6: grappled with here in the future of Republicans want to
42:56
Speaker 6: continue to have that stronghold.
42:58
Speaker 4: Doct Amelia Nice of First Watch the West Virginia Watch

Speaker 18: We need leaders in the House of delegates who know

45:52
Speaker 18: in District fifty seven. All of us are struggling with
45:55
Speaker 18: the inflation caused by Biden and Harris. I've worked with
45:58

46:01
Speaker 18: I'm committed to doing it again. Mark Carter is running

46:40
Speaker 4: as they are destroying our communities by closing all of
46:43
Speaker 4: our grade schools and we are under attack by Republicans.
46:46
Speaker 4: Vote blue, says a texture well as.
46:51
Speaker 6: A reporter, I'm not going to comment on political parties,
46:53
Speaker 6: but I will say education is a key issue. Going
46:56
Speaker 6: into this legislative session and going back to those voting numbers.
46:59
Speaker 6: That's something political parties are really trying to stress. As
47:02
Speaker 6: we've seen a huge push to expand school choice in
47:05
Speaker 6: West Virginia. There are there is money leaving public schools
47:09
Speaker 6: to go towards the Hope Scholarship, which are education saving
47:11
Speaker 6: this account program. So that is certainly an issue. I
47:14
Speaker 6: think political parties are trying to use specifically, specifically ones
47:18
Speaker 6: that are are for Democrats saying, you know, we need
47:20
Speaker 6: champions for public schools in our legislature.
47:23
Speaker 4: We'll talk about kids. That is one of the things
47:26
Speaker 4: that you have kind of I don't want to say
47:27
Speaker 4: built your career because you're multifaceted as far as journalism go,
47:30
Speaker 4: but you do focus a whole lot on on children's issues.
47:33
Speaker 4: Your mother and uh and that probably plays some into it.
47:37
Speaker 4: But I think you'd be doing it regardless because of
47:39
Speaker 4: the kind of person I've got to I get to
47:40
Speaker 4: know you pretty well. The legislature will be meeting again
47:45
Speaker 4: here in a couple of months. Will be new faces,
47:47
Speaker 4: as we've talked about there because some aren't running and whatever.
47:49
Speaker 4: We don't know exactly what the makeup is going to be.
47:51
Speaker 4: Chances are there's going to be more Republicans in there,
47:54
Speaker 4: because that's just the way West Virginia is leaning right now.
47:55
Speaker 4: It's not an endorsement, that's just the way that West
47:57
Speaker 4: Virginians are leaning right now. What are some of the
48:00
Speaker 4: biggest I mean, obviously a very obvious question, some of
48:03
Speaker 4: the biggest obstacles that they're going to be looking at
48:06
Speaker 4: as far as childcare issues in general.
48:09
Speaker 6: Go, Well, you hit the nail on the head with childcare.
48:12
Speaker 6: That was an issue that was supposed to be number one,
48:15
Speaker 6: or at least at the top last legislative session, and
48:17
Speaker 6: because of budget issues and maybe some behind the scenes
48:20
Speaker 6: disagreements really within Republicans, not between Democrats and Republicans. There's
48:24
Speaker 6: so many Republicans that a lot of the disagreements are
48:27
Speaker 6: within them, not necessarily between the two parties. But that
48:30
Speaker 6: issue really didn't go anywhere. We haven't seen any significant
48:33
Speaker 6: childcare legislation pass So coming into this next legislative session
48:37
Speaker 6: in twenty twenty five, that's going to be on the
48:40
Speaker 6: top of the mind for many legislators. And that comes
48:42
Speaker 6: back to workforce, which we were talking about earlier. If
48:45
Speaker 6: you want to grow the workforce, which is a huge
48:47
Speaker 6: issue for many people in government right now we have
48:50
Speaker 6: the worst workforce participation rate in the country or the
48:53
Speaker 6: second worst. You've got to be able to provide childcare,
48:55
Speaker 6: and there are some legislative ways they can do that.
48:58
Speaker 6: And then I think public education currently figuring out how
49:01
Speaker 6: do we deal with our teacher shortages, how do we
49:04
Speaker 6: deal with rashal school clothing we're probably about to see,
49:08
Speaker 6: and supporting the growing number of kids who need IEPs
49:11
Speaker 6: and special education services. And then also foster care. Of
49:14
Speaker 6: course this system is still struggling. We have more than
49:17
Speaker 6: six thousand kids in foster care. Every year we see
49:20
Speaker 6: a number of bills come through that are aimed at
49:23
Speaker 6: either fixing parts of the system, but now we've seen
49:26
Speaker 6: a shift in bills to preventing kids coming into the system,
49:29
Speaker 6: and those really didn't get the traction last year that
49:31
Speaker 6: people their sponsors had hoped. So I think those are
49:33
Speaker 6: the big issues to watch next year.
49:35
Speaker 4: Texas school closures are county boards which are almost one
49:38
Speaker 4: hundred percent Democrats. I agree, vote them out, sincerely, a Texter.

Speaker 4: better health today. Texas Senator Stewart isn't closing schools. He's
50:12
Speaker 4: for deconsolidation. I had Senator Stuart on the show earlier
50:15
Speaker 4: this week and he said that that very thing.
50:17
Speaker 6: Yeah, I listened to that. I mean, school closings are
50:20
Speaker 6: very complicated, right, It's a complex process that it's yes,
50:24
Speaker 6: population decline and is made at county levels, but we've
50:27
Speaker 6: also seen dollars leave public schools and as a result
50:30
Speaker 6: of that, parents leave public schools. So's it's a complicated
50:32
Speaker 6: issue that while it does get decided at county level,
50:35
Speaker 6: what happens in the capital, our state capital certainly impacts
50:39
Speaker 6: our schools down the line.
50:41
Speaker 4: Texas Dave gas was two forty five a gallon in
50:43
Speaker 4: parts of Kentucky Lower when Trump was president it was
50:46
Speaker 4: two sixty five. Then Texas. The school board members who
50:50
Speaker 4: voted to close the schools are not Republicans, well technically
50:53
Speaker 4: they're nonpartisan. But a simple Google search, you know, you
50:57
Speaker 4: can find out what or you can find out what
50:58
Speaker 4: people's party is or are. It's not very it's not
51:02
Speaker 4: very difficult to do.
51:03
Speaker 6: I just think it's a very complex issue, and I'll
51:05
Speaker 6: be honest, it's not something that I've written a lot about,
51:07
Speaker 6: but it is on my radar to do after the election.
51:09
Speaker 6: I'd really like to dive into the school closings around
51:11
Speaker 6: the state. But it's you know, I think just looking
51:14
Speaker 6: at the infrastructure of schools, I mean, school board authority
51:19
Speaker 6: money only goes so far. And when I travel into
51:21
Speaker 6: some of these more rural counties for work, these schools
51:24
Speaker 6: need significant work and it takes money to do that.
51:27
Speaker 6: And if you don't have the population, for various reasons,
51:30
Speaker 6: to pay into that school system.
51:32
Speaker 9: It doesn't work.
51:33
Speaker 6: So yeah, like I said, it's a local issue, but
51:36
Speaker 6: it goes up the chain as far as what's causing
51:38
Speaker 6: the issues I think.
51:39
Speaker 4: And the economic aspects of it. It's what I talked
51:41
Speaker 4: to several people about, is you know, it costs more
51:44
Speaker 4: and more to keep these old, older schools going, and
51:47
Speaker 4: you can't necessarily get the right type of people that
51:49
Speaker 4: can work on these old schools anymore. I mean, it
51:52
Speaker 4: does come down to economics, sadly, and the.
51:54
Speaker 6: Cost of materials are so much. I mean, the new
51:56
Speaker 6: school they're building in Clinton and the price kept going
51:58
Speaker 6: up and up and up because of the cost of curials. Right, Yeah,
52:02
Speaker 6: I think it's it's a complicated thing. And as we
52:04
Speaker 6: talked about last time I was on the show, a
52:06
Speaker 6: the legislature gave school board Authority money to the Charter
52:09
Speaker 6: Board Association for charter schools. So if you can understand
52:12
Speaker 6: what teachers are upset about.
