- 0:01Speaker 1: Taking a Walk Nashville.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Hey everyone, it's Sarah Harrelson, your host of Taking a
- 0:05Speaker 2: Walk Nashville, and today here with me is country artist
- 0:10Speaker 2: and songwriter Way Jennings. Way was born into one of
- 0:14Speaker 2: country music's most iconic family names, and fans can instantly
- 0:21Speaker 2: hear the resemblance of his music to his grandfather, Waylan Jennings.
- 0:26Speaker 2: In the summer of twenty twenty four, Way released his
- 0:30Speaker 2: critically acclaimed, highly anticipated first full length album, Jacquelin Hyde,
- 0:36Speaker 2: which premiered at number ten on Apple Itunes's Top forty
- 0:40Speaker 2: Country Albums chart.
- 0:42Speaker 3: His sophomore album, Baptized by Fire, It's.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Out now and I'm here with him at Couters for
- 0:49Speaker 2: his album release party in Nashville. So, for those who
- 0:53Speaker 2: don't know, Cooters is Nashville's one and only Dukes of
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hazard museum and shops, operated by none other than Old
- 1:02Speaker 2: Cooter himself from Dukes of Hazzard Ben Jones. This expanded
- 1:07Speaker 2: museum features pictures, props, costumes, memorabilia from the beloved hit
- 1:13Speaker 2: television show, and it's located right near the Grand Ole Opry,
- 1:18Speaker 2: so definitely check it out. I'm here with Way Jennings
- 1:21Speaker 2: at his album release party at Cooters today. Join me
- 1:24Speaker 2: in my conversation with him. Welcome to taking a Walk
- 1:32Speaker 2: Nashville with your hosts, singer songwriter Sarah Harrelson. I'm sitting
- 1:37Speaker 2: here at Cooters in Nashville and their museum near the
- 1:40Speaker 2: Grand O Opry with Way Jennings. He's celebrating his album release.
- 1:45Speaker 2: So your new album is coming out this Friday, Baptized
- 1:49Speaker 2: by Fire. Tell me about this new album. You've had
- 1:52Speaker 2: a lot of collaborations. You wrote the track title with the.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Jim Moose Brown and David Wade.
- 1:58Speaker 2: What songs are you most looking for forward for people
- 2:00Speaker 2: to hearing.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Well, I'm looking for to everybody hearing the whole thing.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I didn't really know it before I put the album together.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Actually we did. All the songs got and recorded. But
- 2:10Speaker 1: you start from track one and run all the way
- 2:11Speaker 1: down to track twelve. It's like one big human condition.
- 2:14Speaker 1: So it turned out pretty good. Uh, it's kind of
- 2:17Speaker 1: a story of the human condition, you know, from the
- 2:19Speaker 1: point where I started my life to where I'm at today.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And you know, when you live your life according to
- 2:25Speaker 1: the way God's plan, won't you, Yeah, it gets a
- 2:28Speaker 1: lot better for you.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:30Speaker 2: In between your album Jacqueline Hyde and this new record,
- 2:32Speaker 2: How do you feel how your sound and these particular
- 2:36Speaker 2: songs have evolved in the different kind of message you're
- 2:39Speaker 2: telling in this album.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Well, these are at a little less routed those on
- 2:43Speaker 1: Jack Jacqueline Hide. I wanted to put out a rocking
- 2:46Speaker 1: album with Jacqueline Hyde, you know, with some meaningful nuggets
- 2:50Speaker 1: on the inside of it, like Sleeves is a really
- 2:52Speaker 1: deep song on that one. But this one right here,
- 2:55Speaker 1: I wanted to go kind of deep into my heart
- 2:56Speaker 1: and put out music that I was truly feeling inside here,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know, because I've been sober now for seven years,
- 3:03Speaker 1: and I've really got of gained clarity through the time
- 3:07Speaker 1: I've spent on stage and the seven years, you know,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and I realized I asked someone wanted to say. So
- 3:13Speaker 1: I put this album together with a bunch of good
- 3:15Speaker 1: friends of mine, and you know, it's been a blessing.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm really excited to hear the new music. You
- 3:21Speaker 3: also co wrote.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Some songs on it with Tyler Booth, who is running
- 3:25Speaker 2: with Josh Turner. You also have collaborated with artist Karen
- 3:29Speaker 2: Waldrop and with this album, you're currently on the Baptized
- 3:33Speaker 2: by Fire tour, touring in more than forty five.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Cities in eighteen states.
- 3:38Speaker 2: How are you balancing your family and the tour at
- 3:41Speaker 2: the same time right now?
- 3:43Speaker 1: What ain't easy? My wife just gave birth to our
- 3:47Speaker 1: seventh child.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Oh well, congrats.
- 3:49Speaker 1: He's about five weeks old now, named Jesse Ray. So
- 3:52Speaker 1: I've spent a lot of time at the beginning of
- 3:53Speaker 1: this year at home with her, and I've got a
- 3:56Speaker 1: little bit of time coming off coming up pretty soon
- 3:59Speaker 1: to be off. But I try to keep a good
- 4:02Speaker 1: balance between career and family. But you know, it ain't
- 4:05Speaker 1: always the easiest thing to do. So I just got
- 4:07Speaker 1: to go out there and do shows and make it
- 4:10Speaker 1: back home in time.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Do you ever bring your kids on the road?
- 4:12Speaker 1: I do. I do right now, they're not able to because,
- 4:15Speaker 1: like I said, we have a baby at the house.
- 4:16Speaker 1: But yeah, well I brought my kids are out there
- 4:19Speaker 1: when we would like to call them up and do
- 4:21Speaker 1: how to lue you together and all that stuff, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: surely fun time. It's kind of family oriented hill these days.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Wonderful you people can find tickets to your upcoming show
- 4:30Speaker 2: on your website. You have so many this year. You
- 4:35Speaker 2: know your outlaw brand. It's essentially been your family's DNA.
- 4:39Speaker 2: But your music today does focus on redemption and faith.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So how do you balance honoring the you know, sort
- 4:46Speaker 2: of rebellious legacy while staying true to the man of
- 4:49Speaker 2: faith you are now?
- 4:51Speaker 1: Well, honestly, if you look around, you'll see that being
- 4:54Speaker 1: staying true to the man of faith I am today
- 4:55Speaker 1: is kind of rebellious, and so if you know, I
- 4:58Speaker 1: just try to be myself. I mean, my family got
- 5:01Speaker 1: branded a bunch of outlaws a bunch of years ago.
- 5:02Speaker 1: But even my grandfather didn't like it because you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: he wasn't not that Robin Banks for nothing, right, He
- 5:07Speaker 1: was just trying to do some rowdy music and have
- 5:10Speaker 1: a good time. You know. I like to have a
- 5:12Speaker 1: good time too. If you come to my show, we
- 5:14Speaker 1: have a kind of a rowdy time. Plus you know
- 5:16Speaker 1: there's some things you can learn on the inside of
- 5:18Speaker 1: my show too.
- 5:19Speaker 2: So absolutely very excited for your upcoming shows and new album.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Way Jennings, My last question for you.
- 5:28Speaker 2: We're on taking a walk in Nashville, and I know
- 5:30Speaker 2: you spend a lot of your time outside of Nashville now,
- 5:33Speaker 2: but do you have a favorite place that you have
- 5:36Speaker 2: just loved taking a walk in Nashville.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Oh man, there's so many places you can take a
- 5:41Speaker 1: walk in Nashville. We just I'm trying to think what
- 5:43Speaker 1: the name of that park was. We just shot out
- 5:45Speaker 1: in videos that that was a beautiful place to walk.
- 5:47Speaker 1: We went for the little high k over.
- 5:48Speaker 3: There, probably Percy Warner Park.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Maybe it might have been. Yeah, but that was a
- 5:53Speaker 1: beautiful walk there. But I like walking around this area, honestly,
- 5:56Speaker 1: having meet Music Valley, you know, I like to hang
- 5:58Speaker 1: out over there near this board and down there at
- 6:01Speaker 1: the Music City Bar and Grill. Matter of fact, I
- 6:03Speaker 1: shot one of my last videos in the Music City
- 6:06Speaker 1: Bar and Grill with West Ship, a buddy of mine.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It's called old Country Song. Very cool. And speaking of
- 6:11Speaker 1: this area, I'll be doing a show down there May
- 6:13Speaker 1: thirty first at the Troubertory if anybody wants to come
- 6:16Speaker 1: out there. We're gonna be doing an album celebration there.
- 6:18Speaker 1: So yeah, this area right here is a good place
- 6:21Speaker 1: to walk, uh, just about anywhere in Nashville.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Lounston wonderful.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, we're looking up forward to your upcoming show at
- 6:27Speaker 2: the Troubadour and your new album Baptized by Fire Way Jennings.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Thank you so much for being on Taking a Walk
- 6:33Speaker 3: Nashville today.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You're welcome. Thanks for doing it in front of Big
- 6:36Speaker 1: Poast sings this truck over here.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, perfect setting to do it and along with the
- 6:41Speaker 2: Waila Jennings exhibit and here too at the museum.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I think it's a perfect setting.
- 6:45Speaker 1: It is. It's good meet too, nice men, you too, Meigan.
