- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome board. It's the ucon Men's Coaches Basketball Coaches Show
- 0:04Speaker 1: here on lear Field Mike chris Pino joined by Dan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hurley as the Huskies get through three non conference games. Dan,
- 0:11Speaker 1: and you know, with varying degrees of success, obviously won
- 0:15Speaker 1: by a lot of points, but I know you're perfectionists
- 0:19Speaker 1: at heart. What did you come up with in terms
- 0:23Speaker 1: of your summation of what you saw in those first
- 0:25Speaker 1: three games?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we probably covered New Haven and I'm
- 0:31Speaker 2: not sure if I want to bring myself back there
- 0:33Speaker 2: again anyway, but I would say that you're feeling really
- 0:37Speaker 2: good about Lowell. I mean, it was a quick or
- 0:40Speaker 2: it was a shorter video session, because you tend to
- 0:43Speaker 2: go way longer with film breakdown after losses than after wins.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So I would say just Field felt great about Lowell,
- 0:50Speaker 2: just making more of a defensive effort, flying around the court,
- 0:54Speaker 2: looking like a team, not at every position, but you saw,
- 0:58Speaker 2: you know, guys playing the level of defense that's going
- 1:01Speaker 2: to help us win something. And then I thought, against Columbia,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you know, we played, you know, with the sharpness of
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, fifteen assists, two turnovers at halftime, you're shooting
- 1:11Speaker 2: sixty plus percent from the field. You know, you're really
- 1:15Speaker 2: guarding I think a really good veteran team that again,
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know, returned four starters and beat villing Over the
- 1:21Speaker 2: year before in a bye game. So yeah, we knew
- 1:24Speaker 2: it was going to be a challenge. I was thrilled
- 1:26Speaker 2: with the first half, but then the second half was
- 1:29Speaker 2: pretty torturous, especially just the last fifteen minutes. And you know,
- 1:33Speaker 2: I credit Columbia because I really think the coach is great.
- 1:36Speaker 2: But yeah, it's just some of the bad defensive things.
- 1:40Speaker 2: You know, human nature kicks in and where you let
- 1:43Speaker 2: down your guard and then you start to have the
- 1:45Speaker 2: defensive breakdowns, start missing free throws, missing layups, turning the
- 1:50Speaker 2: ball over, et cetera.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yeah, human nature. You brought it up the other night.
- 1:56Speaker 1: You can't really expect anything less than that. I mean,
- 1:59Speaker 1: you're leading big numbers. What happens with players. I mean,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you've been in games like that yourself. I'm sure we're
- 2:06Speaker 1: you look up the scoreboard. You can't help it. You say,
- 2:08Speaker 1: wholl eight minutes left, we're up thirty. You know, how
- 2:10Speaker 1: do you fix that? If you're a player, I guess
- 2:13Speaker 1: is the question?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you don't on most I mean on
- 2:17Speaker 2: teams that concern you. I think that you know, I
- 2:20Speaker 2: didn't have to worry about that on the twenty three
- 2:23Speaker 2: team or the twenty four team, because you know those
- 2:25Speaker 2: teams were you know, those are killer teams. You know
- 2:29Speaker 2: those are ruthless, relentless. You know they would you know,
- 2:34Speaker 2: their competitive desire to win the next possession and to
- 2:38Speaker 2: give the opponent nothing, and to step on their neck
- 2:41Speaker 2: and destroy the opponent, to moralize the opponent, break the
- 2:44Speaker 2: opponent's will, you know, show superiority that way. You know
- 2:48Speaker 2: that you know this this team didn't you know, showed
- 2:52Speaker 2: it in the Lowell game and then did not show
- 2:54Speaker 2: that in the Columbia game.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Dan Hurley with US you Comemen's Basketball Coaches Show, Mike Chris,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know here after the game against Columbia, you mentioned
- 3:04Speaker 1: Silas Demri had a pretty good game nine assists, but
- 3:07Speaker 1: you wanted to look at the tape to see, you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: what he was doing in review defensively and how he
- 3:13Speaker 1: ran the offense. After reviewing it, what did you come
- 3:16Speaker 1: up with as far as his development?
- 3:18Speaker 2: Now, I mean just the on ball defense for US.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I think to start the game, you know, I thought
- 3:24Speaker 2: he took major steps forward, you know, not not not perfect,
- 3:29Speaker 2: but gives us a lot of hope that he could
- 3:31Speaker 2: be the tone center for us at the defensive end
- 3:34Speaker 2: on ball. So and then I think he gives us
- 3:37Speaker 2: an edge, an element that we really you know, haven't had,
- 3:41Speaker 2: which has got real speed and ability to get to
- 3:43Speaker 2: the rim and an ability to get paint and create.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So I'm you know, I feel good about you know,
- 3:51Speaker 2: where he is and where he could be as the
- 3:53Speaker 2: year goes on, because I think he's a guy who's
- 3:55Speaker 2: who's going to be committed.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Yeah to twenty six minutes too, for didn't shoot a lot,
- 4:01Speaker 1: but again the nine assists, one turnover. I remember when
- 4:05Speaker 1: I covered Jason Kidd when he came to the nets,
- 4:07Speaker 1: I'd be amazed at what he could do without scoring.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Sometimes he'd make one field goal in a game, but
- 4:13Speaker 1: he'd have ten to eleven assists, you know, with two turnovers,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and the nets would be running people out of the
- 4:18Speaker 1: building without the point guard really contributing offensively in terms
- 4:23Speaker 1: of points. That's an amazing thing. I think when a
- 4:26Speaker 1: guy can do that.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, a job is to make everyone around
- 4:29Speaker 2: them better. You know, a lot of that has to
- 4:31Speaker 2: do it, you know, just making plays for others. You know,
- 4:34Speaker 2: he plays in some positions where he played some really
- 4:37Speaker 2: good health defense and he was able to make the
- 4:40Speaker 2: game easier for the guys he plays with.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Terris Reid another twenty four minute good effort. Six of
- 4:48Speaker 1: nine In that Columbia game. You talked about free throws,
- 4:51Speaker 1: he has seven of ten. The team missed ten. That's
- 4:54Speaker 1: not a great number, but he's in these first couple
- 4:57Speaker 1: of games he'd been on the floor, he's been very
- 5:00Speaker 1: in a very short period of time. That has to
- 5:02Speaker 1: be a real positive feeling for the team going forward
- 5:06Speaker 1: with all these big games coming up.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's a he's a obviously a big
- 5:10Speaker 2: time talent. Yeah, just you're you're now putting everyone in
- 5:15Speaker 2: a more comfortable position, a chance to be more successful,
- 5:18Speaker 2: you know. And for him, I think it's as we
- 5:20Speaker 2: start to play, you know, it all comes down to
- 5:22Speaker 2: the details and the fundamentals and the techniques and you know,
- 5:26Speaker 2: and victory it's won by inches, not by these like
- 5:29Speaker 2: wide margins. So it's like just as we go to
- 5:32Speaker 2: play against these these bigger teams, these more talented teams,
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, just making sure he sticks to his identity.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I know it was nice. I think Harris had a
- 5:41Speaker 2: sequence the other night where, you know, he dribbled the
- 5:44Speaker 2: ball down the court in transition, then he drove the
- 5:47Speaker 2: ball from the top of the key and and and
- 5:50Speaker 2: missed a jump hook, and then he took a three
- 5:52Speaker 2: to the next possession. So, you know, I think getting to,
- 5:56Speaker 2: you know, playing towards that identity that that we need
- 5:58Speaker 2: him to play at as critical as you get to
- 6:01Speaker 2: these bigger opponents where the you know, the margin for
- 6:05Speaker 2: error is very slim.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he's obviously he could shoot the basketball from inside
- 6:11Speaker 1: and the paint, but do you have any qualms about
- 6:13Speaker 1: him firing it up from three? I mean, he was
- 6:15Speaker 1: wide open and it was a big margin in the game.
- 6:18Speaker 1: What's your thought on that.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I'm glad it was a big margin for you, Mike.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It wasn't a big enough margin for me, but we
- 6:25Speaker 2: were in two different positions. It sometimes it's the timing
- 6:29Speaker 2: of it. I remember Donovan took one at a bad
- 6:32Speaker 2: time a couple of years ago, and I think it
- 6:34Speaker 2: might have been against Butler at the what was then
- 6:38Speaker 2: the XL Center, And it wasn't even so much that
- 6:41Speaker 2: he took it it was when he took it. You know,
- 6:44Speaker 2: like if your team is in a funk and not
- 6:46Speaker 2: playing to your identity and you're playing soft and you're
- 6:50Speaker 2: in just a bad stretch of defense and offense. That
- 6:52Speaker 2: sometimes happens within a two minute period of a game
- 6:56Speaker 2: or a three minute period of a game. If he
- 6:59Speaker 2: sandwiches in there, they were like a launched a launched three.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Then yeah, I mean that's when you don't want them
- 7:05Speaker 2: to shoot it, all right.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Timing is everything, all right, coach, we'll be back just
- 7:09Speaker 1: a moment time out. We're back with more of the
