Transcript
- 0:00What's up y'all? You were listening to the Extra
- 0:01Point College Football Podcast. I'm your host Jacob Carnes,
- 0:05joined as always by my Co host Daniel Hammock.
- 0:08Daniel, it is March this week. We've got the 1st and 2nd rounds
- 0:14of the NCAA basketball tournament.
- 0:17March Madness is here, which is always the number one.
- 0:20It's a great time of year if you're a sports fan because
- 0:22there's just sports on for like 4 days straight all day, every
- 0:26day. You know, I remember having it
- 0:28up in my phone or laptop at school and then work and phone
- 0:32at work and always a lot of fun. It's also a great time, Daniel,
- 0:36for brackets. You're going to see a lot of
- 0:37brackets, food, candy, you know, logos, sports teams, I mean, you
- 0:44name it, brands that there's brackets everywhere with people
- 0:46doing stuff. We're going to do our own.
- 0:48But of course, this is a college football podcast.
- 0:51So Daniel here, here's what we decided.
- 0:54We looked and we said, man, you know, people love comparing
- 0:57teams from different areas. I wonder how many College
- 1:00Football Playoff teams there have been.
- 1:02And what do you know? There were exactly 64 teams that
- 1:06have competed in the College Football Playoffs.
- 1:08So you and I made a bracket. We'll go through the specifics
- 1:11here in a minute. But we're going to use our
- 1:13bracket to try to decide the best teams of the College
- 1:17Football Playoff era. Daniel, That's what we're going
- 1:20to do today. How you doing?
- 1:21Great dude. This the stars aligned man.
- 1:24For this to happen, we were just throwing ideas out there.
- 1:28Obviously there is a little bit of bracket fatigue in the
- 1:30college football world because all of a sudden with 12 teams,
- 1:34you're always looking at a bracket.
- 1:35So it's not as sweet as it once was, you know, But comparing
- 1:41errors is perfect. And then like you said it just
- 1:43so having to perfectly show up on a, a 6014 bracket.
- 1:46So excited to see some of these matchups.
- 1:49Some of them are repeat matchups.
- 1:50We'll get into those. And we got at least one.
- 1:52We got some fun regions for sure.
- 1:55Daniel this is exciting because Pete, number one, this is a
- 1:59feature, not a bug of college football.
- 2:01People have always, always argued over which team is better
- 2:04and why, whether it be two teams that won't, will or won't play
- 2:08during the season, whether it's two teams that already played
- 2:12and already have a result. We're still arguing.
- 2:15This was the Notre Dame of Miami this last year.
- 2:17We're still arguing over which team is better Now.
- 2:19I'm like, guys, they played six weeks ago.
- 2:21What are we? What are we doing?
- 2:23It's a feature, not a bug for college football.
- 2:25And comparing over areas is near impossible.
- 2:28But it's only been about, you know, a little over a decade.
- 2:31So we can at least try. All right, There's 64 teams,
- 2:35Dingo. Here's how we seeded it.
- 2:37Bill Conley has a great article linked down below over on ESPN
- 2:42or if you're listening on podcast and the podcast episode
- 2:45episode description. He used SP Plus to rank every
- 2:50College Football Playoff team from one through 64 since he
- 2:54uses computers and metrics. I'm like, great, I'm just going
- 2:58to use that for our overall seating, All right?
- 3:01And this is how the NCAA basketball tournament does
- 3:03things is they seed the team's one through 64 and basically
- 3:06Region 1 gets the number one overall seed.
- 3:09Region 2 gets the number 2, Region 3 gets the number three,
- 3:12Region 4 gets the number four, and then you snake it.
- 3:15So like the number five overall seed becomes the two seed for
- 3:19Region 4 and the number six overall seed becomes the two
- 3:21seed. And you just keep going that way
- 3:23until every team is in the bracket and seated.
- 3:26So that's how we seated it. If you want to see those 64
- 3:29rankings and you think they're wrong, argue with Bill down
- 3:32below in the article. So you and I didn't seed it.
- 3:35We just got we got the teams. And like, if you're following us
- 3:40on social media, if you're not, you should at the extra point
- 3:43pod. But you'll be able to find the
- 3:45bracket on Daniel's Twitter, on my Twitter at Deep South Daniel
- 3:49at Jacob Karn to the K linked below, and also on our Instagram
- 3:53at the Extra Point pod so you can follow along visually.
- 3:57Daniel, let's start with what we are calling the Alabama region.
- 4:01Are these going to go the Alabama region people are?
- 4:04Asked to be To be fair, a lot of Alabama teams have made the
- 4:08College Ball playoffs. So let's get through Game 1.
- 4:10Daniel. Here's our first matchup.
- 4:12Number one seed, number one overall seed, 2020 This is
- 4:16something Bill Connolly has put a stamp on since that team won
- 4:19their national championship. Weird year, but a great year for
- 4:22Alabama 13 and O and then the number 64 overall seed or in
- 4:26this region, the 16 seed 2025 Tulane.
- 4:30I think we got Alabama, but. Yeah, we're we're going to make
- 4:33some of these easy all we're not going to get granular if it's a
- 4:37layup. This was obviously an elite
- 4:39Alabama team. Tulane, welcome.
- 4:42I'm glad you're on the bracket. You made it.
- 4:45Enjoy your early exit. No Cinderella story here.
- 4:49No, all right, 2017 Oklahoma eight seed 2025 Ole Miss nine
- 4:55seed. Daniel he got.
- 4:57This one's fun. This is where you start to have,
- 5:01you know, was this team better than that team?
- 5:042017 Oklahoma. This was the.
- 5:08This is the Rose Bowl. Yeah.
- 5:10Yes, the one Georgia beaten double.
- 5:11Eligible team, Lincoln Riley in his bag with Baker Mayfield.
- 5:16They have Kyler Murray as the backup quarterback.
- 5:19I mean, this was this was special Ole Miss, man, they just
- 5:23had this run, lose their coach and win two games in the playoff
- 5:28against good teams. I think I'm still leaning
- 5:31Oklahoma in this because I just think that they were they were
- 5:34elite for sure on one side of the ball.
- 5:37And I don't think that Ole Miss would have stopped them once
- 5:39that offense for 2017, just remembering how lethal they
- 5:43were. So I'm on Oklahoma.
- 5:46I'm with you, 17 Oklahoma moving on.
- 5:49All right, we've got five seed 2021 Alabama, the national
- 5:52runner up against 2021 Cincinnati.
- 5:54Daniel, this one's easy. This is our only rematch in the
- 5:57first round. We saw this game.
- 5:59Alabama beat them in the semi final.
- 6:01So 21 Bama moves on four seed 2016 Alabama against 13 seed
- 6:072018 Notre Dame. Dingo, who you got?
- 6:112016 Alabama. I mean, I, I, I'm going to just
- 6:16keep this one easy as well. Like, let's just it's 2016
- 6:18Alabama. Yeah, lost in the last play of
- 6:22the game. This was freshman Jalen Hurts.
- 6:24This was a Lane Kiffin spread offense, dynamic offense.
- 6:28Yeah, I think I'm with you on 16 Bama against that Notre Dame,
- 6:33the 18 Notre Dame team. All right, Six seed, 2025 Ohio
- 6:36State. We just saw this team play.
- 6:37Talk about him this past year against 2024 in state.
- 6:42Fun match up here, Daniel, 11 seed.
- 6:44Who you got? Yeah, this one's fun 'cause
- 6:46you're kind of, it's like these teams played, right?
- 6:49They didn't play. They almost played very close to
- 6:52have being have played. Yeah, this was got to go to Ohio
- 6:55State. I think if they play that Penn
- 6:58State team, think about how that Penn State team kind of ran out
- 7:01of gas in the cultural playoff the year before.
- 7:05They would have lost to 2024 Ohio State.
- 7:07In fact, they did. But yeah, I think the 2025 Ohio
- 7:11State, I don't think that's a, that's a reach 2025 Ohio State
- 7:15over 24 Penn State. I'm in I'm in agreements there.
- 7:18And how we're doing this, by the way, is Daniel and I are picking
- 7:21this live. We've not talked about it
- 7:22beforehand. So if we have a disagreement,
- 7:23we're going to debate it out right here in the podcast.
- 7:25And you can you can yell at us in the comments about why we're
- 7:28right or wrong about who won these match shifts as well.
- 7:30So we'd love your input and feedback.
- 7:33All right, no disagreement so far, Daniel.
- 7:35We go to a 314 matchup, 2018 Alabama against 2019 Oklahoma.
- 7:40Who you got? Yeah, I mean, that 2018 Bama
- 7:44team had two NFL quarterbacks on it, Actually three.
- 7:49They had three NFL quarterbacks on it.
- 7:51So they were special, They could win with anybody, defence was
- 7:54elite, and they had like 4 Bulletnikoff winners at wide
- 7:57receiver. So give me 18 Bama.
- 8:01I'm with you in agreements, I promise I will give input, but
- 8:05we got a lot of games to get through.
- 8:06I agree with you. So we're going to move on.
- 8:07We're plenty of time to talk about these teams.
- 8:09All right? 710 matchup, 24 Notre Dame
- 8:12against 23 Texas. Who you got, Daniel?
- 8:1524 Notre Dame. National runner up.
- 8:19National runner up versus. Talking to Ohio State, 23, lost
- 8:23in the semi final to Washington. They lost to Washington.
- 8:28They had Xavier Worthy 80, Mitchell at receiver, Queen
- 8:32years QB. To Vondre sweat on the defensive
- 8:34line. Yeah, give me I I'm Texas on
- 8:38this one. I think Texas.
- 8:39I'm beaten, dude. I'm trying to find.
- 8:42It's our first upset. I'm trying to find something
- 8:44where we disagree, but we are in lockstep here we have a.
- 8:49That was their their defensive line is.
- 8:52The difference to me in that game is I know Notre Dame also
- 8:55had a good offensive line, but that was a dominant interior
- 8:58defensive line with Sweat and Byron Murphy special teams.
- 9:01It's a shame that team couldn't go to the natty that year and
- 9:04play Michigan. Also, some of these, it's like
- 9:06you're comparing the different CFP eras, so you've got like 4
- 9:11team era versus 12 team era and we'll get to some, several of
- 9:16these that are layups are like 12 team era teams that have
- 9:18gotten in and it's like you forget how excellent the four
- 9:23team era people were to get in. So I think there's something to
- 9:26be said about, you know, Texas having to get in and everything
- 9:31like that. So all that be said, Texas over
- 9:34Notre Dame, we're on the same side.
- 9:36I love it. All right, this one should be
- 9:38easy. 2015 Michigan State, 2017 Alabama.
- 9:42Daniel, we go. We go on Bamba for this one.
- 9:44Yeah, that's all right. That's 2017, Bama.
- 9:47Okay. All right, round of 32 in the
- 9:50same region, we've got 2020 Alabama against 2017 Oklahoma.
- 9:55Yeah, I Bama finished the deal. Oklahoma didn't.
- 9:58It's not only about that, but this Bama team was complete.
- 10:01OU was lacking defence and they weren't going to be able to.
- 10:05Then I'll be able to hang with Bama when it comes to that.
- 10:09This is a fun one, Daniel. We're going to do this a couple
- 10:11more times comparing Alabama teams 2021 Alabama against 2016
- 10:17Alabama. I I'll give some up here.
- 10:21I think I'm going 21 Alabama I Bryce Young, it's the best
- 10:25quarterback Nick Saban's ever had.
- 10:27And it's not just like, oh, quarterback and like, oh, you
- 10:30know, Jaywen Hurd's and Bryce Young.
- 10:31But that offense was so dynamic because he was so clutch.
- 10:36And I think the 21 defense, you got it like Will Anderson,
- 10:39Dallas Turner, like I think they could have just dropped 8 and
- 10:43rushed the passer and made Jaywen Hurd's beat.
- 10:45And we saw what happened when Alabama was made to do that.
- 10:49And it wasn't until a year later in the 17 matchup and Nick Saban
- 10:53had to change quarterback. So that that's why I would lean
- 10:5521 Bama. I'm doing the same thing. 16
- 10:58Bama had its flaws and the they could beat teams that they were
- 11:03just better than, which I know just sounds cliche, but they
- 11:06were always good enough to do that.
- 11:08But whenever they were met with an elite matchup, that's where
- 11:11things faltered. And Jalen Hurts ended up being
- 11:14that dude. He just was not that year.
- 11:16He was a safe guy that year. So we're comparing the the year
- 11:21itself. So 21 Bama, I'm with you.
- 11:23They made it all the way to the national championship game and
- 11:27you know, short of Stetson Bennett comeback.
- 11:30Yeah. You know, and a pick six they
- 11:32would have, they would have won. I love.
- 11:35All right. We're in agreements there. 25
- 11:37Ohio State 18 Alabama both lost in the semi final is that right?
- 11:45Yes, Ohio State got kicked before.
- 11:47That forgot. Full team playoff, man.
- 11:49I'm like, they pretty much worked.
- 11:50I mean, they were a Top 14 this year. 25 Ohio State against 18
- 11:54Alabama. Who you got?
- 11:56This 18 Alabama team? Was this the one that got blown
- 11:59out by Clemson? In the natty, yes.
- 12:04And then OK, OK. I'll tell you, I would go Bama.
- 12:09I will get to the 2018 Clemson. I hold that team in very high
- 12:12regard because I mean, Daniel that we, we were not doing the
- 12:16podcast yet, but I had a 2018. I had a guy who's a big Clemson
- 12:20fan of my small group of church and I'm like, dude, it's gonna
- 12:24be a miracle if y'all keep it within 20 with Alabama.
- 12:27I just remember thinking like that 18 Alabama team was so much
- 12:31better than the 17 team. They went in undefeated.
- 12:33They blew out Oklahoma and the semi where it was like 28
- 12:37nothing. And it's like, oh, wow, Like the
- 12:39the the vibe going into the daddy was they're going to blow
- 12:42out Clemson. So I don't want to let that game
- 12:45like poison this team. I think 18 Alabama would win
- 12:49this game, but what city? And that was Tua had like a
- 12:52broken ankle, right? He had like a broken ankle.
- 12:55And they like, taped it together and like duct tape and then.
- 12:58Or was that 19? I'm trying to help it to a no,
- 13:01he didn't think it hurt 19. 19 he got hurt.
- 13:04Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 13:05Just making sure we have the right guy.
- 13:07OK so this was healthy Bama, everything.
- 13:11They were dominant up until that point.
- 13:16Yeah, let's I would say Bama in this one.
- 13:18Bama All right, then we've got 17 Alabama championship team
- 13:23against 23 Texas. I think more interesting than I
- 13:27when I first looked at it, I'd still go Alabama here.
- 13:31I think they have more ways to win, less weaknesses in that 23
- 13:34Texas team. And obviously they won a natty,
- 13:36but they did lose a game 26 to 14 to Auburn that year.
- 13:40But I'd still go 17 Alabama. Yeah, it's funny because you can
- 13:43get, you get to pick who your quarterback is because they both
- 13:46started or they both played, not started.
- 13:49They both played. And the reason that the 17 Bama
- 13:53team won their natty was because they swapped it to A.
- 13:56Right. Famously at halftime, so you
- 13:59could play two different offenses.
- 14:00So yeah, I I think this 17 Bama team is too strong for 23 Texas
- 14:05and their champion. All right, Daniel, This is why I
- 14:07called this the this is the Alabama region and here's why
- 14:11we're in the Sweet 16 for Alabama teams to choose from.
- 14:14So there is a Bama team going to the Final Four.
- 14:16Here we go 4 different. Starting quarterbacks.
- 14:18That's right. 2020 Alabama versus 2021 Alabama.
- 14:23This is easy for me, but what say you?
- 14:25Yeah, 20 Bama is is better. They're better defensively.
- 14:30I mean they have both of them have elite receivers 2020 Bama
- 14:34is like 6 deep at receiver that are all NFL receivers and Bama
- 14:38is like 2 or 3 deep at receiver so.
- 14:41Elite secondary Pat certain and that secondary elite pass rush
- 14:46will record going perfect on field goals and extra points all
- 14:49season. Yeah, 20 Bama.
- 14:53I've kind of showed my car to Daniel 2018 Bama against 2017
- 14:56Bama. I would lean 18 Bama personally,
- 15:00even though they didn't get the job done.
- 15:02This is a one loss team. If I remember trying to see
- 15:06yeah, one lost team on the lost big in the natty Again, this is
- 15:10what's tough about these matchups.
- 15:11Is this a tournament format? Are we and we can talk about
- 15:13this, but are these teams at their peak, for example, like 24
- 15:17Ohio State will be a fun case study.
- 15:19Went 10 and 2. What am I catching?
- 15:21You know could. They were by far the hottest,
- 15:23most talented team when they won their title the end of the year.
- 15:27Right. This is a playoff bracket.
- 15:30Yeah, regular season you're looking I mean 2018 Bama on a
- 15:35week in week out basis. If you're rolling the dice and
- 15:38you're getting their aggregate of what they were, 2018 Bama is
- 15:41better than 2017 Bama. I agree there. 2017 obviously
- 15:47achieved the ultimate goal of of winning an Addy.
- 15:51They missed the SEC Championship.
- 15:55Because of their loss to Auburn. They lost to Auburn.
- 15:58Is that their only? That was their only loss.
- 16:00Only loss and this is where I'll say 2017 Bama, if you remember
- 16:05that regular season all year, the the buzz was OK.
- 16:10You know, after coming off that 2016 season where they lose in
- 16:13the natty with Hertz's quarterback, it's gosh, can they
- 16:16win with Hertz? Can they win the title with
- 16:18Hertz and it took them switching to 2A2 is the start of the whole
- 16:2118 season, you know, and like, of course, her test his moment,
- 16:24the SEC title game. But that's why I think the
- 16:27offense was so much more explosive because they finally
- 16:29played the better quarterback, right for that offense with 2A.
- 16:32That's why I'd lean 18. Bam it even though they didn't
- 16:34win at all. Wow.
- 16:37This is a very good. It's a good one.
- 16:40I think what if you asked Alabama fans?
- 16:42Because you would be like, you know, on the one hand, 2017, you
- 16:46won an Addy, but hey, which one of these teams didn't lose to
- 16:49Auburn? You know, so that would be 2018.
- 16:53I'm look, this is where you get in trouble comparing eras.
- 16:56If you're prisoner of the moment with 2017 winning an Addy.
- 17:01The 2018 team could have won the natty in 2017.
- 17:05In fact, they did. So yeah, most of those guys were
- 17:09back. I would say most of the 18
- 17:13probably beat 17 because there are a lot of the similar players
- 17:16and they're a year older. You're more mature and better
- 17:20chemistry, that kind of thing. So I'll take 18 Bama over 17.
- 17:24I'll agree with you. And then Daniel lastly for Elite
- 17:288 matchup, I'd take 20 Bama over 18 Bama.
- 17:31I think that was one of Saban's best teams.
- 17:33Even though it was a COVID year, I still think like what what I
- 17:35watch with my eyes. They were so dominant and that
- 17:38roster is so dominant. Would you also go 20 / 18?
- 17:41If you'd argue during the era and even just post era it and
- 17:48again the teams are the teams, the teams are different.
- 17:52But we're arguing if you just talked about quarterbacks, if
- 17:54you were ranking because we've got to that.
- 17:56Those four teams left 20 Bama, 21 Bama, 18 Bama and 17 Bama.
- 18:02You've got Mac Jones on this 20 Bama team, 21 Bama is Bryce
- 18:06Young, 18 Bama is to A, 17 Bama is Jalen.
- 18:11And if you had Bama fans rank them, I think Mac Jones most of
- 18:18the time would have been ranked last.
- 18:19Now during this era, I'm saying now looking back, I mean they
- 18:23never won an Addy with Bryce Young.
- 18:25So I think there's maybe a little that shine has come off
- 18:28of him, you know, so on and so forth.
- 18:30But it's funny because he you would argue that he's the least
- 18:34talented. He was third on the depth chart
- 18:36when at least three of these quarterbacks were on on the same
- 18:39team. So it's crazy to think, but his
- 18:41Bama team was the best. SO2020 Bama takes the region.
- 18:47I love it. All right, let's move down to
- 18:49Daniel. We're we're what we, we, we
- 18:51can't with any for this region. At first we didn't have one.
- 18:53This one is the grab bag. The grab bag, Yes.
- 18:57Why is that, Daniel? Why is it the grab bag?
- 18:59Well, when you look at it, everybody, you're going to see
- 19:02that this one is just a mix of hey, you've got 2025 Indiana,
- 19:09who is elite and was very special.
- 19:12You also got random 2024 Boise State.
- 19:15You've got 2024 Arizona State. You know, you've got 202323
- 19:20Michigan. That's good.
- 19:22OK, good job, you know? Yeah, 24 Tennessee.
- 19:24Then you've got 2025 Texas Tech. And where, where did SMU come
- 19:29from? They're in here, 24 SMU.
- 19:31So you've got a lot of randos in here, maybe the rando region, I
- 19:36don't know. Anyways, this one.
- 19:38'S weird. I like the grab bag.
- 19:40I like the thought of like putting your hand in the bag,
- 19:42pulling out like huh, 24 SMU interesting.
- 19:45I mean even yeah, I mean even 25.
- 19:47I mean, if you're, you know, telling us a year ago you're
- 19:49pulling out 2025 Indians, does that say 16 and O like what in
- 19:54the world? Unbelievable.
- 19:56Unbelievable. All right, first round matchup,
- 19:58Daniel one versus 16 matchup, 2025 Indiana against 2024 SMU.
- 20:04I'm guessing we both got the Hoosiers moving on.
- 20:06We'll have a chance to talk about.
- 20:07It disrespect to my Mustangs, but yeah, we'll go 25.
- 20:11Daniel's Mustangs. Yeah.
- 20:14All right, 8-9 matchup. Always one of the more
- 20:15interesting matchups in any bracket if it's seated
- 20:18correctly. 23 Washington against 2025 Texas Tech.
- 20:22This was very easy for me. Daniel and I think one of these
- 20:26is over seeded and ones under seeded.
- 20:28I like 23 Washington. Yes, that's where I'm going to,
- 20:32yeah. I was hoping that that was the
- 20:34case. Texas Tech, it's a crime that
- 20:37they didn't get, you know? I'm excited to see them go
- 20:40further and everything. They dominated the Big 12 this
- 20:43year. They did.
- 20:44Again, this is going from a fourteen playoff to a 12 team
- 20:48playoff era team and Washington had to be excellent.
- 20:52There is down the stretch there are several games we picked
- 20:55against them. I remember saying there's no way
- 20:56this team wins. Yep.
- 20:57And then they want and this is Caitlin de Boer in his bag.
- 21:00Michael Pinnix shout out Atlanta Falcons him in his bag.
- 21:04They had a good squad that year. So I I would go 23 Washington.
- 21:09All right, 512 matchup, 2015 Clemson, 2016 Ohio State, but
- 21:15both a tale of what could have been. 2016 Ohio State did not
- 21:20win their conference, correct, that was.
- 21:23Correct was the one year they lost to Penn State in the
- 21:26regular season. Right, right.
- 21:27OK. And then but 2015.
- 21:29They got beat like 31, nothing or whatever it was in the semi
- 21:33against Clemson. Against Clemson, yeah.
- 21:35And then Clemson in 2015 goes to the natty and then loses to
- 21:40Bama. As the one seed.
- 21:42As the yeah yeah. On Sidekick changes the game.
- 21:46Right, right, OK, we're all tracking.
- 21:49I'm I'm going to go to Clemson because Clemson was excellent
- 21:54during this run. And I think that we need to you
- 21:57know, they Clemson obviously, you know, breaks the breaks the
- 22:01ceiling on the next year. But this one still this is this
- 22:05is a very good Clemson team in in 2015.
- 22:09All right, we have the 413. We've got the team to beat, that
- 22:11Clemson team, Alabama and 24 Tennessee.
- 22:14Again, one of the easier ones for me.
- 22:16Yeah, give me Alabama. Not overcomplicated.
- 22:19This is This is 2015 Alabama with I love it.
- 22:24Maybe the greatest coaching staff ever assembled.
- 22:26Yeah, that that's totally fit. That matters in close games.
- 22:29All right, Daniel, we've got 2611 game, 2014 Alabama, 2017
- 22:34Clemson. This is another kind of easy one
- 22:36for me, Daniel. I'll take 14 Alabama.
- 22:38I think people forget how dominant that team was before
- 22:40getting the buzz saw of Ohio State.
- 22:43They got hot late. When they ran through the Heart
- 22:44of Dixie, I went. I went easy.
- 22:47Elliot ran through the Heart of Dixie on that long touchdown
- 22:50run. And this was that 17 Clemson
- 22:53team, the Kelly Bryant like the the one the one gap year in
- 22:56between their two generational quarterbacks they had.
- 22:58This is one a lot of 1 score ACC.
- 23:00Game this is the one that in the S in the Sugar Bowl, if I
- 23:05remember correctly, when they faced Alabama, the same one we
- 23:08kind of said had a pedestrian offense.
- 23:10Alabama just pulled pulled the guys and said hey, we're not
- 23:13throwing the ball anymore. They ran the ball, played
- 23:16defense, and they just existed for, you know, and they did that
- 23:21in a playoff game. So yeah, not trying to
- 23:24disrespect 2017 Clemson, specifically Kelly Bryant, but
- 23:28this one's 14. Bam, I'm with you.
- 23:31Then we've got 314 game 2016 Clemson national champions
- 23:36against 2024 Arizona State. Another easy one from me,
- 23:39Daniel, we're going to talk about in the beginning of the
- 23:41second. Give me 16 Clemson.
- 23:42I'm assuming you're on board with that.
- 23:43Yeah, repost, all right. A fun one.
- 23:47A 710 matchup 2022 Ohio State against 2016 Washington.
- 23:54This is very easy for me. Yeah, 22 Ohio State is.
- 23:59I mean, they were a field goal away from winning an Addy so.
- 24:04In that Washington team we I'm surprised how high they rated an
- 24:08St. Plus because I think if you just
- 24:11ask from the 14 era historically what were the worst teams to
- 24:13ever make the playoff. I think you're mentioning 2015
- 24:16Michigan State, 21 Cincinnati, 2016 Washington in the same
- 24:20sentence. Was that Jake Browning was their
- 24:22quarterback? Yes, OK.
- 24:24Yes, they played in the Peach Bowl against Alabama in the semi
- 24:28that year. Wolf Yeah.
- 24:30Wolf. Wolf is right.
- 24:32Buzz, his girlfriend, Wolf. Dude, last, last, last Peach
- 24:35Bowl in the Georgia Dome. RIP.
- 24:37All right, the 215 game, another easy one for me. 23 Michigan 15
- 24:41or no against 24 Boise State. Obviously Boise.
- 24:49All right, Daniel, back to the top.
- 24:50All right. Another, I say.
- 24:53Another easy one for me. Indiana 25, Indiana 23.
- 24:56Washington. I think Indiana blows him out.
- 25:00I don't know what blows him out, but beats him good.
- 25:03To be fair, Indiana blew out a lot of teams this year, so maybe
- 25:06that is fair. I don't think I'm being a
- 25:09prisoner in the moment there, am I?
- 25:11Well, we've seen these two coaches go head to head and it
- 25:14happened this year and Indiana Blue blew him out.
- 25:17So for what it's worth, you know, I don't think that I think
- 25:21if there's a coaching edge, I would obviously lead lean
- 25:24towards Signetti. And I mean, that's important.
- 25:27We did at least see that. So yeah, give me, give me, give
- 25:30me Indiana 2025 Indiana. Next one, we've seen this match
- 25:34up, it's the 2015 national Championship Alabama versus
- 25:37Clemson, so we will respect the results of the game. 15 Alabama
- 25:42moves on there thanks to a great onside kick by Nick Saban.
- 25:46I'm thinking still. All right, here's a fun 114 Bama
- 25:5116 Clemson. I say a fun one.
- 25:52This is again an easy one for me.
- 25:54I'll take the team that won the national championship.
- 25:57I guess the team that came up short, not just because of that,
- 25:59but I mean, I, I don't want to show my hands too much.
- 26:02That 16 Clemson team was special.
- 26:05I think that's the best Clemson team in their school's history.
- 26:08Yeah, you had Deshawn. I take that back.
- 26:11Eighteen team was best. I was going to say 18, yeah.
- 26:14One of the two, obviously. But an elite defensive line.
- 26:18Both of their years they had elite defensive lines, which is
- 26:20funny because it's like, which one was better?
- 26:22They're both very good. The second was better, but
- 26:25they're both very good for Clemson.
- 26:28And then yeah, 2014 Bama, they just didn't, they had not
- 26:33reached the point where they were the I would almost split
- 26:37these Bamas. We're going to have to do that
- 26:39at a certain point. But you split these Bama eras
- 26:41into the Bama one point O and the Bama 2 point O or Sabin one
- 26:45point O, Sabin 2 point O. And he evolved.
- 26:48I think he truly did. And I think that it happened
- 26:51during the 2017 season is when he evolved.
- 26:54So you had that was, you know that before that he had just
- 26:58essentially reached the peak of Sabin one point O or Bamba, one
- 27:01point of whatever we want to call it.
- 27:03And then it it changed and Clemson was already kind of
- 27:06operating, you know, differently at that point.
- 27:10I would argue this or on the stocking point, I would push
- 27:13back and argue. I think they changed after the
- 27:1514th season. That was when they they brought
- 27:17in Tom Herman and said how in the world did you exploit our
- 27:20defense? He hires Lynn Kiffin that
- 27:23offseason. I got they tried to.
- 27:25Change. No, they tried, they changed.
- 27:27I mean, you had Blake Sims and Jake Coker as your quarterbacks.
- 27:30Maybe. My point is they finally got the
- 27:33players that aligned. With the scheme and they were
- 27:35finally clicking by. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:38So that's that's fair. Maybe, maybe we do move the that
- 27:43change up. It doesn't change the results of
- 27:45this game 16. 16 Daniel, This one's interesting 2022 Ohio
- 27:50State, I would identify and say one of the best teams to not to
- 27:53not win a national championship, right?
- 27:56One of one of my 2, I'll save the we haven't talked about the
- 27:59other one yet against 23 Michigan.
- 28:02Just on paper, Daniel, I'm just looking at these rosters in
- 28:04these teams with different logos.
- 28:06I'm saying give me Ohio State easy as a seven seed moving on.
- 28:11But it's Ohio State, Michigan in the years 2022 or 2023 and
- 28:15Michigan owned them at that point.
- 28:17So I'm just saying give me Michigan.
- 28:19Is that fair? It that's fair.
- 28:23I mean, Ohio State lost to Michigan this year, right?
- 28:26In 22 and in 23, so yes. So that was their only loss
- 28:30before the semi. That's why they were not a one
- 28:33or two seed. Right.
- 28:35They should have been a two seed that year to be fair and they
- 28:37lost in Michigan. Oh, man, yeah.
- 28:40They were they were special though this going against that
- 28:44Georgia team of the way they, you know, losing that Georgia
- 28:47team. They were owning them for a
- 28:49while in that game and they this is the Peach Bowl for in 22 for
- 28:55Ohio State. And I think that seeing the way
- 28:58CJ Stroud played in that game, I just you know, if you're on the
- 29:04surface, like you said, if I was just looking, I'm like, again,
- 29:08it's not only about quarterbacks.
- 29:09The I think the lines of scrimmage are, are big as well,
- 29:13but I think that they both have really good lines of scrimmage.
- 29:15But man, come out JJ McCarthy versus CJ Stroud, man, I would
- 29:24really, I, I'd lean Ohio State, but I, I can respect the fact
- 29:30that we need to acknowledge that this is Ohio State, Michigan and
- 29:34Michigan was right in the heart of owning them each of these
- 29:37years and they beat them both of.
- 29:39Them they beat them twice as a starter.
- 29:41He did once as a backup. That and to be fair, that
- 29:44Michigan defense was unbelievable in 2023.
- 29:47Yeah, yeah. To to be fair to that team,
- 29:50unbelievable run game. Brandon Graham.
- 29:52Yeah, they yeah, let's go. We could.
- 29:54I mean, 23 Michigan makes sense. I can.
- 29:57I can hear that argument. So let's do 23 Michigan.
- 30:00All right, Daniel, we've got in this region two games left, 25
- 30:06Indiana against 15 Alabama. This is kind of a you talk about
- 30:10two areas. These are two different areas of
- 30:12football. 10 years apart. 10 years apart, I think I'd lean
- 30:17Indiana again. I think if you look at the
- 30:20roster, it isn't. But this is where Indiana still
- 30:22doesn't make sense this year. I know they're going to have
- 30:24guys drafted, but I'm still looking at Indiana's roster
- 30:27compared to the rosters they beat and destroyed this year in
- 30:30college football and it doesn't make any sense.
- 30:32I don't think I've ever seen a team click like 25 Indiana did.
- 30:35I think I would take 25 Indiana over 2015 Bama.
- 30:38It's just I'm trying to put some respect on what I just watched
- 30:40because I datted them all season while also trying to balance
- 30:43being a prisoner at the moment. Both teams won an Addy.
- 30:45Indiana was unbeaten, Bama lost. I know Bama is going to have a
- 30:48ton of defensive talent. Indiana's defense played so
- 30:52soundly this year. They're so well coached.
- 30:56I think I'd go Indiana, but I'm willing to hear an argument for
- 30:5915 Alabama. So if we're going to if we're
- 31:02going to just, you know, obviously Alabama lost the game
- 31:06that year to Ole Miss. That was the one of the Bo
- 31:10Wallace like, you know, triple ricochet tips into Laquan.
- 31:15What a game. 4337 Otherwise, they were, I mean, they were
- 31:22hurting people every, every opportunity they got.
- 31:26Yeah, they beat LSU, who at the time was #2 in the country, you
- 31:32know, by two touchdowns. Everyone else, I mean, they're
- 31:35blowing them out. That was a very good Clemson
- 31:38team that they played and they beat them.
- 31:41God, I just think about having Lane Kiffin as offensive
- 31:44coordinator, having Kirby Smart as defensive coordinator, having
- 31:48all of those, all those great coaches on your roster with that
- 31:52roster, you know? Dude, I mean, I'm just saying
- 31:58what what, what, what if we fast for 10 years and Bryant Haynes
- 32:03has been Michigan State's head coach and they're coming off of
- 32:06back-to-back playoff appearances.
- 32:08You know what I mean? Like this is where I I both
- 32:10don't want to be a person at the moment, but also we don't have
- 32:13the all right, look at that staff from 10 years ago for
- 32:17Indiana right now. Let's just imagine for a moment.
- 32:21All right, you've got Kirby Smart LED defense.
- 32:25You've got an offense that includes Derrick Henry.
- 32:32But the this one, this what I'm saying about Indiana is look at
- 32:35the teams they beat this year where you would have said look
- 32:38at the NFL talent on Oregon's roster, on Ohio State's roster,
- 32:41on Miami's roster, on Penn State's roster, like these teams
- 32:45they blew out. I agree with you that that's why
- 32:47I'm still confused by what Indiana just did.
- 32:50And I think 15 days are playing. That this this roster, though,
- 32:55you're going to go back when you're going back to the era,
- 32:57you're also going back to a deeper roster.
- 33:00So they're going against an Alabama roster that includes
- 33:05Reggie Raglan, Reuben Foster, Jeron Reed, a Sean Robinson,
- 33:08Eddie Jackson, Minka Fitzpatrick, Marlon Humphrey,
- 33:11you know, Jonathan Allen, Dalvin Tomlinson.
- 33:15Dude, these are some Sean Dion Hamilton, Tim Williams.
- 33:20Yeah, that's Rashawn Evans. For what it's worth, I don't
- 33:26have Indiana moving the final four, for what it's worth, if
- 33:28that changes your mind at all. But I'm willing to go Bama here
- 33:31if you if you like her. For you.
- 33:34You want to plant your flag here for Alabama.
- 33:36I'm not a Bama apologist, trust me, but they had Calvin Ridley,
- 33:42who is like 30 years old at receiver at this time because he
- 33:45is like graduated at 21 from high school.
- 33:49You got OJ Howard at tight end. I mean those guys for the most
- 33:55part, you know that they didn't have a ton out wide.
- 33:58You are dealing with Jake Coker at quarterback.
- 34:01But I. Think it's Mendoza.
- 34:04But you've got Derek. Henry.
- 34:06Kenyon Drake, Damien Harris, Beau Scarborough.
- 34:11I mean, just got dudes on dudes. You got the YMCA in your
- 34:14backfield. This is unbelievable.
- 34:17Derek, number one run defense of the country for Indiana.
- 34:20Was told that he needed to move to linebacker and he said, Nah,
- 34:25this guy was special. And he was, yeah, Heisman Trophy
- 34:28winner. I would say this needs to be
- 34:31Alabama. If it's me with the coaching
- 34:33staff they have and the depth specifically, I think that they
- 34:38would have guys to stop this offense to a certain extent and
- 34:43then they'd be able to impose their will.
- 34:45You've also got that elite offensive line.
- 34:48Yeah, I I would I, I have a tough time saying Indiana beats
- 34:5215. All right, I'll, I'll let you
- 34:56have this one. We'll do this.
- 34:58If we're stuck on the next one, we'll go with me and then we'll
- 35:01switch. Well, we'll do the little
- 35:02possession arrow. I like that that's the only
- 35:04fairway. All right, so I'll I'll give you
- 35:0715 Bama here next. Next time we'll, you know,
- 35:10possession Arrow will be all right. 16 Clemson against 23
- 35:16Michigan. This one's fair.
- 35:18I'm not going to say easy. I would go 16 Clemson.
- 35:22Yeah. Here, I think a much more
- 35:25dynamic offense, a well coached, elite Brent Venables defense.
- 35:30Do you like my one? If I'd go the other way would be
- 35:33Michigan's defensive line against Clemson's offensive
- 35:36line. But I think Deshaun Watson kind
- 35:38of makes that a mute point, as he did his entire career and as
- 35:41Trevor Lawrence did his entire career at Clemson, because they
- 35:44never really had been on the offensive line and it didn't
- 35:47really matter. 23 Michigan. So you go.
- 35:50On Clemson as well. OK, now this is interesting.
- 35:552016 Clemson against 2015 Alabama for US trips to the
- 36:00Final four. This is a a three seed against a
- 36:05four seed Daniel for a trip to the final four.
- 36:08Two teams that are kind of had similar rosters.
- 36:10They played in the title game, they played each other in both
- 36:13of these years. Or 15.
- 36:15Bama 1 and Addie 16. Clemson 1 and Addie.
- 36:18I think I'd go 16 Clemson. More dynamic quarterback.
- 36:22Think different. I don't know if I'd lean
- 36:25receiver. I would lean defensive line.
- 36:27No, I'd lean to fit to find Alabama.
- 36:29I'm talking myself in Alabama. As I say, 20 in here.
- 36:33Oh, it's tough. Mike Williams.
- 36:36Ben Boulware Wow, this was these are just great to.
- 36:42Just name naming dudes. Just naming dudes.
- 36:44Hunter Renfro Hunter Renfro Wilkins was young.
- 36:47Was special. They scored 40 points a game.
- 36:50Clemson did. They gave up eighteen points a
- 36:52game. Great pass rush.
- 36:54They they played in close games like they were down to Alabama
- 36:59in the fourth quarter. Went and lost.
- 37:01Their one loss was a crazy turnover game in Pitt.
- 37:05Multiple interceptions to pit in the regular season.
- 37:07Bam was one loss we talked about was that crazy play Ole Miss
- 37:10game at home. Clemson beat Ohio State 31
- 37:14nothing in the semi final this year.
- 37:17What was Oh didn't Bama got handed Michigan State in the
- 37:20semi final for their year? Lol that OK I'll say this that
- 37:2531 O like playoff if you I don't live here.
- 37:29That was a shock at the time. Yeah.
- 37:31Nobody expect like that was not like this.
- 37:34You know, Ohio State, it's kind of not as good.
- 37:36This is Ohio State peak Urban Meyer.
- 37:38Yeah. This might have caused him to
- 37:39quit man. Yeah, and like, it's so tough,
- 37:42recency bias because, like, at the time, I mean, Dabo could do
- 37:46no wrong. Now people look at Dabo like
- 37:49he's a village idiot because he hasn't updated his, you know, he
- 37:54hasn't, he hasn't evolved. But at the time?
- 37:56At the time. I mean.
- 37:58This was literally him breaking this, you know, him finally
- 38:02breaking through and and winning it all.
- 38:05Doing it his way. Doing it his way so you feel
- 38:08like the buy in, you know, beating.
- 38:09Saban. Beating Saban, It's funny
- 38:12because the 16 team was, you know, obviously their big
- 38:16breakthrough was beating 15 Alabama.
- 38:18Beating 16 Alabama, excuse me, but 15 Alabama.
- 38:21Their big thing was still holding off, holding off
- 38:24Clemson. So it's like both of these, it's
- 38:26like unstoppable force me to movable object a little bit.
- 38:30I think that this is a very good and this is a good match up.
- 38:35Here's how you beat 2015 Alabama.
- 38:37Can you take a 10 O lead and force Jake Coker to throw?
- 38:40Could Clemson have done that? Yeah, I think they could.
- 38:44This really good defensive line. And then you've got your best,
- 38:49the best version of Deshaun Watson in in college, the very
- 38:53best. And you've also got the
- 38:56hungriest because he's already lost to this 15 Bama team, so he
- 38:59gets to play him again. That's kind of what the feeling
- 39:02was when he got to play him in 16 was Yep, he got to, he got
- 39:06another chance at him and this time he made the most of it.
- 39:09So I've talked myself into 16 Clemson.
- 39:13There you go. I'm with you.
- 39:14All right, who won The Who won the Heisman in 2016?
- 39:18It wasn't the shot. Oh, that was Lamar, wasn't it?
- 39:21That was Lamar. It was that's right.
- 39:23I was like, why didn't the Sean win it?
- 39:25Because 15, of course, Henry win the Heisman.
- 39:27All right, Daniel, we moved to the region of death is what I'm
- 39:29calling. I think this is by far the
- 39:31hardest region. And of course that means we
- 39:33begin with what many people regard to be the greatest team
- 39:36of all time, or at least the one they've watched.
- 39:38If you've been a college football fan of the last decade,
- 39:412019 LSU is the one seed in this region.
- 39:45Their first match up a 16 seed, 24 Clemson.
- 39:50Do we need to have a conversation here, Daniel, or
- 39:52can we just go ahead and move on?
- 39:5419 LS. The Bengal Tigers next all
- 39:57right, the 8-9 match up. This is this is a really fun one
- 40:00because teams from the same year, 2025 Oregon, 2025 Georgia,
- 40:06these teams did not play you and I I think picked them to play in
- 40:10the natty. In our bracket for this past
- 40:13year, I know who I picked. My pick was simple because I
- 40:16talked myself into Oregon today and then I was like, you know
- 40:19what, at the time when the tournament started, I I had
- 40:23picked Georgia. And so that was going to be my
- 40:25pick is like I might logically at the end of the year, looking
- 40:29at how the full 1213 game sample size, I said I think 2025
- 40:35Georgia beats 2025 Oregon if they play that next week.
- 40:39That's where I was at with it. Daniel, what say you?
- 40:42You know, it's funny, I think of both of these teams were
- 40:44subject, which of course they had losses, especially at the
- 40:47end of the year to some really good teams.
- 40:50They're both subject to getting caught playing the other teams
- 40:53game. Yeah, I felt like Oregon and
- 40:57Georgia, if they could have not done that, then it would have
- 41:01been they would have had success this season.
- 41:03Both these teams are immensely talented.
- 41:05I think Georgia got out playing, you know, different way than
- 41:08they wanted to with Ole Miss, and I think Oregon got that way
- 41:12with Indiana. Of course, Indiana was just
- 41:14elite and you know, got the better of Oregon twice.
- 41:19I would probably lean Georgia as well.
- 41:21We don't have to use this as one of our possession arrows.
- 41:24I agree. 25 Georgia over 25 Oregon.
- 41:28This one's close though. I really like this matchup.
- 41:31OK, I was looking for one team here.
- 41:34OK, our next 1413 match up we've got actually be 512 match up.
- 41:402020 Ohio State, 2018 Oklahoma. Who do you got?
- 41:452018, Oklahoma. So this this would be my one of
- 41:50my is this Kyler Murray? Yes, this was Kyler Murray's
- 41:53Heisman season. This is the COVID Ohio State
- 41:57team that got beat by Alabama in the natty against the 2018
- 42:00Oklahoma team that got smoked in the semi.
- 42:03This is me is like one of my big upsets.
- 42:05It's a 12 / 5 for me. Give me 18 Oklahoma.
- 42:08This was statistically the most explosive offense in the Lincoln
- 42:12Riley era at Oklahoma. 49 points a game.
- 42:16Now their defense gave up 33 points a game.
- 42:19Liability. Every game that has had to go
- 42:21outscore, they had to go outscore their opponent.
- 42:23They beat Texas in a rematch, the Big 12 championship.
- 42:26This favors A shootout team like this team favors getting into a
- 42:31shootout and then outscoring you, which I think they could do
- 42:34against that 20 Ohio State team because they like to play fast
- 42:38as well. And I think that plays into
- 42:41playing the kind of game Oklahoma wants to be in anyway.
- 42:44So this would be a big upset for me.
- 42:46Seed wise, I'd go 18 Oklahoma. Yeah, it's so tough because 2020
- 42:51Ohio State, I mean, obviously everybody remembers and tries to
- 42:54forget all of 2020 because of the COVID year for, for a lot of
- 42:59reasons. But Jacob, obviously you
- 43:01remember this cause we've been watching ball for a long time.
- 43:03But people who like to forget, there was a lot of controversy
- 43:07specifically around letting in teams who haven't played a lot
- 43:11because. Like 7 games the.
- 43:12SEC. The SEC started their season.
- 43:16You know where they were going to get 10 games in.
- 43:18The ACC did something similar. The Big 10, out of abundance of
- 43:22caution and everybody trying to politic to each other, waited
- 43:26and then they started late and I think they went to the playoffs
- 43:306:00 and 9:00. They won their 7th game right
- 43:33prior to getting blown out. So I would almost argue there's
- 43:38not enough film on this 2020 Ohio State team to know for
- 43:42sure. So I wish we would have got a
- 43:46whole season of that Ohio State team.
- 43:48I think they were really good and I think maybe they could
- 43:50have amounted to more had they had more opportunities.
- 43:52But I agree with you. I think it's 18 Oklahoma.
- 43:55Big upset, all right, 413 matchup, 19 Ohio State against
- 44:002014 Florida State. This is easy for me, Daniel.
- 44:04And it'd be 19 Ohio State. Really.
- 44:07OK, Wait, wait, wait. 14 Florida State.
- 44:09That's the year that they lost to Oregon.
- 44:12In the hilarious Jim James blowing out in the Rose Bowl,
- 44:16Yeah. James throws the ball behind
- 44:18him. They won like they it you were.
- 44:21They were being debated about even getting into the playoff,
- 44:24even as an undefeated team. Because they and.
- 44:26How many close games they had? And he had several interceptions
- 44:30that year, I remember. Here's my hot tick Daniel.
- 44:33This is my best playoff team to never win a national
- 44:35championship. 2019 Ohio State. 2019 I'm just trying to remember
- 44:42about them. I don't want to sell them short.
- 44:452019 Ohio State. This was Chase Young for
- 44:48Heisman. This was Justin Fields first
- 44:51year as a starter. That's right.
- 44:53This was and Olave and Garrett Wilson.
- 44:57That's. Right.
- 44:59This was I'm trying to wear that the rest of that roster, Sorry,
- 45:02I'm pointing to the roster here. You've got I mean dude, they
- 45:07scored 47 points a game. Justin Fields had a 41 to 3
- 45:11touchdown to interception ratio. Their defense only gave up
- 45:14thirteen points a game. They.
- 45:16Oh yeah, 16 1/2 sacks. The only reason they lost is
- 45:20because they ran into 19 LSU. So they didn't.
- 45:23They got beat by Clemson in the semi on a Justin Fields red zone
- 45:26interception late. That's right.
- 45:28What's funny is they were, this is when I really got into SU
- 45:31Plus and we were doing the podcast this year.
- 45:34That was our first year. That's when we started.
- 45:35This is our first year They were the number one ranked team in SU
- 45:38Plus going into the playoff. They finished the year #1 in SU
- 45:42Plus. LSU finished second.
- 45:44The team we regard as the best of all time was second in SU
- 45:47Plus and 20. I wish SU Plus is not the end
- 45:49all be all, but to show how good that Ohio State team was, even
- 45:52after a loss to Clemson they were still at the end of the
- 45:55season the best team in the country according to SU Plus and
- 45:58would have been favored according to SU Plus against LSU
- 46:02in a neutral. Funny enough, they they had
- 46:05Jameson Williams. I always forget that he was at
- 46:07Ohio State. That's right before he
- 46:10transferred. And there was the controversial
- 46:16fumble, no fumble, and the semi against Clemson.
- 46:18I forgot about that too. Yeah, well, this is this is
- 46:21honestly none of this is wasted research because they are going
- 46:24to move on for US 19 Ohio State, but I'm just this is helping me
- 46:29so. We're just, we're reminiscing.
- 46:31We need to do this so that the the listeners know who we're
- 46:35talking about. Also, when we get to the next
- 46:37round, we're going to need to remember that, you know, they
- 46:40had, you know, Jonah Jackson, Max Ray.
- 46:44Yeah, they had a pretty good Thayer Munford.
- 46:46They had a really good offensive line.
- 46:48Nicholas Petit Freyr. OK, OK, I'm looking.
- 46:52Hi Daniel, this is good. 6/11/2014 Ohio.
- 46:56Excuse me, 2014 Oregon. 2021 Michigan.
- 47:01I'd give 14. Oregon here.
- 47:02Heisman winner, dominant all season.
- 47:05I didn't want to Michel's best team.
- 47:07They got they fell flat on their face against Georgia.
- 47:11They they peaked when they beat Ohio State.
- 47:14They beat Ohio State and then they were like, we're good that
- 47:18you know, they won their their Big 10 championship and then
- 47:22Georgia basically just scored on their first I think 8
- 47:26possessions or 7 possessions or something crazy.
- 47:29This was that this was that first team to almost bust the
- 47:33blue chip ratio. That 14 Oregon team, they were
- 47:35like at 45% blue chip, OK with the Heisman quarterback Chip
- 47:39Kelly, and this is like peak Chip Kelly.
- 47:42They play Ohio State in the natty and just it was too much
- 47:46run out of gas there. That was that Oregon team.
- 47:49I can get down with 14 Oregon. Let's do.
- 47:51It all right 314 game, 2024 Ohio State national champion against
- 47:552020 Notre Dame. I would go 24 Ohio State in this
- 47:59game. I'm going to play my flag with
- 48:022020 Notre Dame. I'm just kidding.
- 48:05Here's another here's a here's a funny Daniel 2022 Michigan
- 48:09against 2022 TCU. Who would you pick except for we
- 48:13this game happened and TCU beat them in the semi final which is
- 48:17hilarious that we got this now. Oh my goodness, that is funny.
- 48:21Forget that. Everyone's like, how did TCU get
- 48:24in the play? Like guys, they they beat
- 48:26Michigan, they won out at Michigan, beat out at Michigan.
- 48:29Yeah, this wasn't Cincinnati sneaking in and getting pounded
- 48:32by Alabama. This was.
- 48:34Right, they made it. They won a game, man.
- 48:37All right, another easy one for me. 21 Georgia against 25
- 48:40Alabama and going with the dogs. Yeah, that defense was.
- 48:45Unbelievable. All right.
- 48:47Five first round picks. Off of that, we go back to the
- 48:49top one seed versus a nine seed. This was also easy for me.
- 48:55Daniel 19, LSU against 25 Georgia Tigers.
- 49:00Go tigers all. Right here's a fun 118 Oklahoma
- 49:0419 Ohio State. I've showed my hand.
- 49:06I think it's 19 Ohio State, but I'll hear you out.
- 49:11If you want to plant a flag for Oklahoma, like I'd be willing to
- 49:14go ahead and use like pre use my flag plant that.
- 49:16I think Ohio State beats 18 Oklahoma because their offense
- 49:21was just as explosive and they had a dominant defense.
- 49:24That was my like we saw what Alabama was able to do it the
- 49:27pass rush in the semi final and now you got Chase Young coming
- 49:29off the edge. That's my like, good luck to 5
- 49:33foot 4 Kyler Murray. Yeah.
- 49:36And this was yeah, Kyler Murray and they, they had AI mean this
- 49:41was a historic offense. But yes, it was very much 1
- 49:45sided and they were very much, you know, we talked about the
- 49:49difference of like the four team versus the 12 team playoff eras.
- 49:55Oklahoma and Clemson both in their respective years, they had
- 49:59years where they could almost coast to the 14 playoff because
- 50:04they were in a power conference and they weren't really
- 50:06challenged in that conference, even though they were dominant
- 50:10on the offensive side of the ball.
- 50:11The 18 that that Oklahoma team, they weren't challenged in the
- 50:15Big 12, much like several of the Clemson years, but obviously
- 50:19Clemson had a couple breakthrough years, which those
- 50:21those teams are the best ones that are moving on throughout
- 50:23here. Oklahoma, I don't think they
- 50:26have never won a college world playoff game, correct.
- 50:30We actually gave them their first win when they played 2020
- 50:33Ohio State just one round to go. So I'm going to go ahead and
- 50:39agree with you that 19 Ohio State would have beaten them.
- 50:42But that is a very I mean, it's interesting.
- 50:44I'd love to see these teams play.
- 50:47All right, 14 Oregon against 24 Ohio State.
- 50:51I'll go Ohio State because if I mean, if you're just going to go
- 50:54down, look at roster and like who was on the team and how they
- 50:57because I'm like, again, 14 was not a Oregon was not a blue chip
- 51:00team. Both of them have Chip Kelly.
- 51:04That's funny. That's right.
- 51:06The Chip Kelly call them both offenses is better players with
- 51:09Ohio State. Then we've got 22 TCU against 21
- 51:13Georgia and then easy one for me, I'm going 21 Georgia.
- 51:17What any argument there? We've seen this game, we've seen
- 51:19this game. We kind.
- 51:20Of saw that game we. Kind of saw most of this game,
- 51:22so yeah, OK. Wow, the matchup.
- 51:25This is definitely that I wanted.
- 51:27Oh my goodness. The matchup I wanted Daniel LSU
- 51:30against Ohio State. It's hard for me to pick against
- 51:342019 LSU, although I want to believe the 2019 Ohio State
- 51:37could have beaten them. We never saw anyone beat LSU.
- 51:40I, I, I, I give the nod to LSU, but this is the game I wanted to
- 51:43see because I legitimately think Ohio State could have given the
- 51:46given them a really good game slash, could have beaten them.
- 51:51And then that completely changes the narrative of how we talk
- 51:55about that 19 LSU team. That this is what's funny about
- 51:57talking to teams that are the greatest of all time because
- 52:00it's like, OK, change one result.
- 52:01And do you still think one of the greatest teams of all time
- 52:03and you change this one result? Do we still think that way about
- 52:06LSUI? Still look back fondly on the 19
- 52:09Ohio State team even though they didn't finish the deal, They
- 52:11lost the semi, and it's funny to think about it.
- 52:13Change one game and are we looking at them as the greatest
- 52:16of all time? Of course they go 15 and O, so
- 52:17of course we're going to regard them that way as we should.
- 52:20Right. I would give the nod to LSUI
- 52:23Just wanted, I wanted us. I wanted 19 Ohio State to have
- 52:27their moment on the pod they have.
- 52:30But I mean, I'd go 19 LSU here. All right, let me let me paint
- 52:35this a little bit differently. OK.
- 52:39I think I, I agree with you and I think as far as we need to
- 52:43give respect to that 19 Ohio State team and they were elite.
- 52:47They were some of the elite of the elite.
- 52:49They should have really been the second best team that year.
- 52:52And I say, should they could have been, but then that
- 52:56intercepts that late interception like you mentioned
- 52:58famously. The controversial fumble.
- 53:00Justin Fields never quite broke through that.
- 53:04You know, he never, he never won the national championship in any
- 53:07of his years. You know, he had those two years
- 53:09in Ohio State, one year at Georgia as the backup.
- 53:11But they I also just think like, if you think about mentality,
- 53:16there was a certain level of maturity because this was Joe
- 53:21Burrow's last year. He, I think if you gave them the
- 53:25moment we saw Joe Burrow raised the occasion in every other
- 53:30game. And I just think that even if
- 53:32they took Ohio State's best punch, LSU had something
- 53:36different that year that just, there was a on over like an
- 53:40overwhelming belief that they were going to win.
- 53:43And I think it was just like, I'm getting goosebumps even
- 53:45talking about it. LSU is not my team, but like Joe
- 53:48Burrow with, I mean, the literal 2 best receivers in the NFL
- 53:52right now on his team and he's just, you know, that image of
- 53:57them playing the Get the GAT song with him smoking a cigar is
- 54:00just so burned into my memory that I think he would have
- 54:05overcome this. This is a phenomenal
- 54:07hypothetical match up though. We really wanted this match up.
- 54:10But yeah, 19 LSU for the win. Yeah, I mean, I'm with you.
- 54:15And they they got better as the lights got brighter.
- 54:18That LSU team did, team did. So I'm I'm with you.
- 54:21I just again, I wanted them to have their flowers.
- 54:24I think they got them. We can move on, all right, 24
- 54:28Ohio State versus 21 Georgia. This is where if you started
- 54:31comparing elite teams, this is where are we saying how good was
- 54:35Ohio State when the season ended or are we taking the complete
- 54:38body of work? I think regardless, I would pick
- 54:41Georgia. But this is one of those because
- 54:44again, dude, Ohio State lost two games this year.
- 54:46So Georgia beat every team on their schedule.
- 54:48That's why this is an easy call for me, but Ohio State was one
- 54:52of the best teams I've seen at the end of the year when they
- 54:55when they put it all together. It just took them a while to put
- 54:57it all together and then in a four team era they would not
- 54:59have made the playoff and gotten the chance to show it so.
- 55:03Can I do a little? Put one, please.
- 55:06All right. 21 Georgia elite defense.
- 55:10I mean, that puts it so lightly. Elite, elite defense.
- 55:14Before before I continue, do you want to guess what Georgia
- 55:16ranked in SP Plus in 2021 on offense?
- 55:20They were like top five or something.
- 55:22They were number one in the country.
- 55:23Wow. OK.
- 55:26All right, Look, I'm still probably going to be on Georgia,
- 55:28but 21 Georgia, if you remember in the SEC Championship when it
- 55:35just seemed like Georgia had cruised all year.
- 55:38Yeah, that was Brock Bauer's freshman year, I believe.
- 55:42He just was different. All these, you know, they're all
- 55:46the questions were about Georgia's quarterback.
- 55:48Are they going to switch back to JT Daniels?
- 55:51Are they going to stick with, you know, Stetson Bennett, JT
- 55:54Daniels was finally healthy, yadda, yadda, yadda.
- 55:56They go to the that SEC championship game against
- 55:59Alabama and Alabama torched them.
- 56:03I mean, Bryce Young went up and down the field, you know,
- 56:06Jameson Williams, John John Metchi.
- 56:09I mean, it was it was unbelievable.
- 56:11So, yeah, I think Metchi got hurt in that game towards the
- 56:16end, but they had, they scored whatever it was like 40 points.
- 56:19I don't even remember, but so I'm just trying to imagine if
- 56:23the same thing was happening. So we're looking at Georgia like
- 56:26they've won the national championship.
- 56:27This 24 Ohio State teams won the national championship.
- 56:30But put ourselves in that moment.
- 56:32If this is before they've won a national championship and the
- 56:36mindset of Georgia, there's still like an insecurity there,
- 56:38I think to a certain extent. And I think that they could have
- 56:41been had by these elite receivers of Ohio State based on
- 56:45what I saw in the SEC Championship.
- 56:49That being said, I still think 21 Georgia would have done it
- 56:54because of just their overall balance and, you know, their
- 56:58comfortability winning those games.
- 57:00I'll say this to you. What what version of Ryan Day do
- 57:02we get? Do we get to Ryan Day who's
- 57:03like, I'm going to try to out bully Georgia like he did
- 57:06against Michigan? Because I mean, again, they lost
- 57:09to Michigan this year and got bullied by them, bullied by them
- 57:13against 24 Michigan, which was like, I mean, this, this is not
- 57:1723 Michigan, this is Sharon Moore's Michigan.
- 57:19I mean, Yikes, You're with me on 21 Georgia.
- 57:23Yeah, 21 Georgia, that's just, I just, I hear, you know, if there
- 57:27was 1 fatal flaw for Georgia, it was if there was elite
- 57:30receivers. And if there's anything that
- 57:32Ohio State has ever had, it's elite receivers, especially in
- 57:3724, you know, JJ Smith at the end of the year, obviously
- 57:41Carnell Tate and Mecca Buca. I mean that was very special
- 57:45situation. So this is a this is an all time
- 57:48type matchup. This is where, though I'll say
- 57:51it wasn't this real, that you see elite receivers Bryce Young
- 57:55towards George's offense in that game.
- 57:57That's true. So.
- 57:58Bryce Young's not playing quarterback for that 24 Ohio
- 58:00State team. That's a great point.
- 58:03And I think they could outman everybody that didn't have their
- 58:05talent level, Georgia, by finding it far and away matching
- 58:08their talent level on defense. So OK, this is an all time
- 58:11matchup. That's why I call it the region
- 58:12of death. You have what I think was the
- 58:13best offense in the playoff era against the best defense of the
- 58:17playoff era with 19 LSU, 21 Georgia.
- 58:23Daniel. Does defense wins championships?
- 58:27I would say no, I'm taking LSU. All those arguments I just made
- 58:31about Georgia being had by receivers.
- 58:34Yeah. Copy and paste here, but also
- 58:39times 10 because no disrespect to JJ Smith and like Carnell
- 58:44Tate and Mecca Buca. Mecca Buca has already been
- 58:46pretty good in the NFLI think. I think the other two are going
- 58:50to be good in the NFL as well. Yeah, but you're literally
- 58:52talking about the two best receivers in the NFL.
- 58:55Yep, number one and two on the same.
- 58:57Process, if I was going to push back and make the argument for
- 59:00Georgia, you just made it about Georgia being better than people
- 59:03realized on offense. And I do think this LSU defense
- 59:07is a little more vulnerable. They just never got the
- 59:10opportunity to be had because that offense was unquestionably
- 59:16elite. So they had their moments,
- 59:19especially towards the end of the year, they got better as the
- 59:21year went on. So that LSU team started the
- 59:23year kind of shaky, but by the end of the and talking about
- 59:26defense, by the end of the year, they were a strong defense.
- 59:29Patrick Queen, you know, he's still in the NFL playing for I
- 59:32believe Baltimore. They they have some some studs
- 59:36that are still on that team, you know, from that team.
- 59:38But I would still, I would agree with you LSU, just because I
- 59:42mean those players, that combination of players was
- 59:46special. So I would go 19 LSU as well.
- 59:49Very good game though. Very good game.
- 59:51All right, last region, Daniel, what do we call this?
- 59:54The the ifs versus the dids. All right, you'll, you'll see,
- 59:59we'll see what we what we mean here as we go through it.
- 1:00:01One seed, 2022 Georgia against 2025 James Madison.
- 1:00:06Let's not waste our time. Go dogs.
- 1:00:08James Madison, GA. That's right.
- 1:00:10That's right. All right, 8-9.
- 1:00:12This is a fun one. Same quarterback, yeah. 25 Miami
- 1:00:18against 24 Georgia. Both quarterbacks by 1 Carson
- 1:00:22Beck. I would go Georgia.
- 1:00:25I don't want to be. Look, the Georgia fan is picking
- 1:00:27the dogs, all right, But Miami had a good run game this year.
- 1:00:3124 Georgia couldn't really run the ball. 25 Miami catches the
- 1:00:36ball better than 24 Georgia did. Totally fair.
- 1:00:40I think it is 23 Georgia, 23 Georgia is a slam dunk, 25 Miami
- 1:00:46versus 24 Georgia. It depends on when it happens,
- 1:00:49but. Which Carson Beck throws has the
- 1:00:51three interception game. Right.
- 1:00:54Because I mean, which Ole Miss loss?
- 1:00:56Which defense is more likely to throw 3 picks against?
- 1:01:00Is he going to be against the 25 Miami defense?
- 1:01:03Which would just be all up in your face, but the 24 Georgia
- 1:01:07defense? Didn't really have a pass rush.
- 1:01:09Was not as as stout on the front I'm but.
- 1:01:12You can also do it if it all missed it against 24 Georgia,
- 1:01:16which is not Rush a lot and drop 8 and say we're in your head, go
- 1:01:20beat us. You don't have a run game to
- 1:01:22lean on. Yeah.
- 1:01:24We saw Carson Beck with 24. Georgia win a game.
- 1:01:27What games without the ability to run the ball?
- 1:01:29We did not see that with 25 Miami.
- 1:01:31Now it's the whole team. Like Miami had a good run game
- 1:01:34with Fletcher. I just think about how they
- 1:01:36finished, how Miami got it together.
- 1:01:40They beat Ohio State for goodness sakes.
- 1:01:43But you know, beating, beating Texas, beating Miami and then
- 1:01:47obviously beating Ole Miss. That's a being being Ohio State
- 1:01:50beating, beating Ole Miss. You know what I mean?
- 1:01:53I mean, really giving Indiana a great game.
- 1:01:57I think I'm on 25 Miami for this one.
- 1:02:00This one's all right. close for me.
- 1:02:02But if you're against it, you've got possession.
- 1:02:04Air, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna use my
- 1:02:06flag. I'm gonna say OK, all right. 17
- 1:02:09Georgia against 15 Oklahoma. This was, again, an easy one for
- 1:02:12me. I'll go 17 Georgia, unless you
- 1:02:16disagree. 19 Clem, Another easy one for me. 19 Clemson against
- 1:02:2025-A and M Would you also go 19 Clemson?
- 1:02:24Now 19 Clemson. That's Trevor Lawrence his
- 1:02:28sophomore year, right? That's the they lost to LSU in
- 1:02:31the natty, and that was the only loss, yeah, was the. 19 Clemson.
- 1:02:36All right, 611 game, 24 Oregon against 23 Alabama.
- 1:02:40This is another easy one for me personally, but I want to hear
- 1:02:44your pick 1st 20. 3 Alabama would have been the savings last
- 1:02:52year. No, no, no.
- 1:02:53This is Mill Row. Saban's last year Mill Row lost
- 1:02:55to Michigan. the Rose Bowl beat George in the FCC championship.
- 1:03:01Wow. Their only loss was to who they
- 1:03:04lose to. Was it Oklahoma?
- 1:03:06No. Texas.
- 1:03:09Texas. At home.
- 1:03:12Well, they're only lost regular season.
- 1:03:14They lost to Michigan. In the Rose, Yeah, right, right.
- 1:03:19Versus what is this? 2024 Oregon, his only loss came
- 1:03:25in the Rose Bowl after going 13 and O and they just happened to
- 1:03:28get Ohio State in the first round of the Rose Bowl. 1 of
- 1:03:31that weird first year with seating where like Arizona State
- 1:03:35and Boise State got to buy and Oregon's got to play Ohio State
- 1:03:39after having a month off. Right.
- 1:03:43Like for me, it's 24 Oregon. Very good Oregon team.
- 1:03:47I'm just that was Dylan Gabriel was 1/4.
- 1:03:49No, no, no. This was Dylan Gabriel.
- 1:03:51Dylan Gabriel. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:53So Dylan Gabriel's quarterback. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:55This was a very good, very good team.
- 1:03:58They're a forgotten team. I'm with you, 24 Oregon.
- 1:04:01I'm I'm in on that one. OK, 2014 Ohio State natty winner
- 1:04:06against 2024 Indiana. I'd go 14 Ohio State.
- 1:04:09Absolutely. 2020 Clemson against 2024 Texas.
- 1:04:14This is interesting because I think I'd go, I don't know, man,
- 1:04:19that 2020 season's so weird, but I think I'd go Texas here. 2024
- 1:04:24Tech. Losing overtime.
- 1:04:28In the SEC Championship. The semi final was a lot closer
- 1:04:32than the score looked because it was 20.
- 1:04:34It was 2114. Ohio State.
- 1:04:36Texas is driving. They have the sack fumble with
- 1:04:39like under 2 minutes left to make a 2814.
- 1:04:42They ran it back for a touchdown.
- 1:04:43They were like in the red zone, you know, That game looked a lot
- 1:04:47worse. Than they were the last hope of
- 1:04:49anybody beating that Ohio State team because.
- 1:04:51Yes, whoever was. Coming out of the other side was
- 1:04:54was going to lose. Yeah, I, I like, I like 24 Texas
- 1:04:58there as well. All right, then you've got
- 1:05:01That's an easy 118. Clemson against 25, Oklahoma 25.
- 1:05:04Oklahoma couldn't move the ball at all against one of the
- 1:05:09greatest teams of all time. Give us the Tigers.
- 1:05:13Yeah, yeah. For sure. 2022 Georgia 25 Miami
- 1:05:17again, I think this is easy. 2022 Georgia OK 17 Georgia
- 1:05:22against 19 Clemson is interesting because 2019 had
- 1:05:28three amazing teams in the playoff.
- 1:05:30Both lost. Both lost in the natty.
- 1:05:32You know Clemson beat that famous Ohio State team I'm
- 1:05:35talking about. I I think I'd lean Clemson in
- 1:05:38this game. Yeah, this was right at the
- 1:05:41start of Georgia's run. Like the roster was not.
- 1:05:46It wasn't a full Kirby Smart roster.
- 1:05:48People are, you know, he just started bringing guys in.
- 1:05:50They still had like, you know, guys that were not not even just
- 1:05:57the leftovers from the market there, but they had stop gaps
- 1:05:59that they had transferred in. It was a lot of like built by,
- 1:06:03you know, just random guys. So yeah, I think, I think 19
- 1:06:08Clemson, 'cause you're almost seeing a mature version, one of
- 1:06:12the most in one of the mature versions of the Dabo system
- 1:06:16versus like a very early iteration of Kirby Smart.
- 1:06:20So I would also, yeah, I think 19 Clemson probably beats 7.
- 1:06:24All right, 24 Oregon 2014 Ohio State.
- 1:06:29I know Ohio State when the natty I at least want to consider this
- 1:06:3413 or no Oregon scene that ran into the buzz saw at the end of
- 1:06:38the year. This is this is finally a this
- 1:06:40is not a 14 Oregon roster that wasn't a blue chip roster.
- 1:06:43This is a stacked blue chip roster, right like across the
- 1:06:47board. 14 Ohio State finished strong.
- 1:06:51They were kind of like, Oh yeah, they you know, they hit the
- 1:06:53accelerator late. I don't want to discredit the 14
- 1:06:55Ohio State team. First champ in the playoff era.
- 1:06:58I mean, they're on their, they did 3 quarterbacks, right?
- 1:07:01This was. This was the third string
- 1:07:02quarterback winning, which I mean I'm giving credit when I
- 1:07:05say that 24 Oregon is one of these teams I have a strong
- 1:07:08feeling about I I feel strongly about but I will like if you're
- 1:07:14like Jacob, you're an idiot. 14 Ohio State would beat them.
- 1:07:17I will hear that out. So I I've got my rose colored
- 1:07:20glasses on with this 24 Oregon team.
- 1:07:22It's it's one of these what if team again that the ifs versus
- 1:07:25dids 14 Ohio State did it. What if the seeding had been the
- 1:07:3025 seeding for the playoff. Yeah, the Oregon.
- 1:07:32Remember when? This Ohio State team, this was
- 1:07:35they lost that early game against Virginia Tech.
- 1:07:39Was it JT Barrett had to step in.
- 1:07:43Braxton Miller was hurt. JT Barrett stepped in and then
- 1:07:47leads them to, you know, winning basically the rest of their
- 1:07:50games. But they were not blowing teams
- 1:07:53out. They had a couple of blowouts.
- 1:07:54But for the I mean, they beat Penn State and double overtime.
- 1:07:57You know, they beat some bad teams.
- 1:07:58But Michigan State, they only beat, you know, I mean, they
- 1:08:02beat them by like they beat them by 12, only beat Minnesota by a
- 1:08:06touchdown. The the big one was they lost JT
- 1:08:13Barrett. Was it in the Michigan game?
- 1:08:15Yes, because they he played because Cardell Jones had the
- 1:08:19three-game run. It was the Big 10 championship
- 1:08:21in the two playoff games. Right.
- 1:08:24So he got hurt during the Michigan game.
- 1:08:26And then, yes, Cardell Jones 59. Nothing against Wisconsin.
- 1:08:32Which they had to do. That was like a because remember
- 1:08:34the, the, the first playoff rankings, they were 16th and
- 1:08:37they had, they were, they were sixth.
- 1:08:39I think going into the Big 10 championship, Wisconsin was
- 1:08:41undefeated. And the talk was they're going
- 1:08:43to have to blow them out to be considered.
- 1:08:47And so that's dude income. Urban Meyer thinking I get to
- 1:08:50blow its. Team and this is before we
- 1:08:52really knew a lot about because this is the first year of the
- 1:08:54playoffs so we didn't really know how the committee would see
- 1:08:57a backup quarterback knowing right now now a one loss big 10
- 1:09:01champ that barely beats Wisconsin on their third string
- 1:09:04what is a good in they might leave them out so.
- 1:09:07Dude this is the controversial. They jumped TCU and Baylor who
- 1:09:11ended up being 5 and. Six, They didn't have a a
- 1:09:13championship a. Conference championship wow they
- 1:09:16they discussed champions yeah two true champions oh man,
- 1:09:21that's feel bad for both those teams man and then they'd still.
- 1:09:25They famously they beat Oregon that year for the natty so.
- 1:09:29And, and they were heavy underdogs against Alabama.
- 1:09:32And again, this, this is what caused Saban and Kirby to bring
- 1:09:35in Tom Herman because he takes the Houston job after that game.
- 1:09:38And they're like, hey, now that you're in Houston, what did you
- 1:09:41do to beat us? And he had them walk through how
- 1:09:43he exploited the Sabin defense. This is when they went from,
- 1:09:46I've watched the Nike coaches clinic with Kirby talking about
- 1:09:49this like they changed their body types on defense because of
- 1:09:52the you know what? I'm talking myself into 14 Ohio
- 1:09:56State. That's where I'm kind of like
- 1:09:5924. Oregon was very good but like.
- 1:10:02Yes, OK. All right, can I also give one
- 1:10:04other point of just, yes, all right, make you feel better
- 1:10:07about it? Oregon in 24 lost to WHO to end
- 1:10:12their season. Ohio State.
- 1:10:14All right. And then in 2014, who did Ohio
- 1:10:17State beat to win the natty? All right.
- 1:10:21Well, reverse Oregon. I was like, yeah.
- 1:10:23So these two teams, I mean we almost could say ball don't lie
- 1:10:27because they played, but it not the same team. 10 years apart.
- 1:10:32But yeah, let's let's go. I mean, I'm I'm in on 14 Ohio
- 1:10:36State if you are. And the next ones, I'd say easy
- 1:10:40for me. 18 Clemson. I hold in high regard as one of
- 1:10:44the five best teams to win in the playoff era.
- 1:10:46I think we we talked about how good that 18 Bama team was
- 1:10:51because of how far they ended up making it in our bracket, losing
- 1:10:54only to the the 2020 Bama. Yeah, I think in a lot of
- 1:10:58brackets that 18 Bama teams go so far and we held them in such
- 1:11:03high regard. They were basically untouchable
- 1:11:06and then this Clemson team came in and not just beat them, but
- 1:11:09like, you know, handled them. So I agree.
- 1:11:12With a true freshman quarterback, Justin Ross, T
- 1:11:15Higgins special Yeah, Christian Wilkins, Cleveland Ferrell 45
- 1:11:20points a game. Only gave up thirteen points a
- 1:11:21game like beat Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, the beat Texan in
- 1:11:26the record season. Alabama.
- 1:11:28Yeah, 4416. That natty one of the crazier
- 1:11:32games I've watched in like the worst venue it could have been
- 1:11:35in in San Francisco. OK, so then we've got 22 Georgia
- 1:11:39against 19 Clemson. I think easier one, right?
- 1:11:46That's a 22 Georgia. That's a have instead of a have
- 1:11:49not so UGA 22 UGA over in. The 2014 Ohio State and 18
- 1:11:55Clemson. Again, I'd, I'd go 18 Clemson
- 1:11:58undefeated better roster. This is this is peak Dabo.
- 1:12:03I this is like the best team he ever had.
- 1:12:05All right, so then a fun matchup.
- 1:12:07Peak Dabo against Pete Kirby, 22 Georgia against 18 Clemson.
- 1:12:11This is so fun, this one. This is fun. 2 elite defenses, 2
- 1:12:15elite offenses. Like 2 teams that were scoring
- 1:12:1840A game and giving up 13. You've got a fifth year, sixth
- 1:12:25year senior quarterback versus a freshman quarterback and it is
- 1:12:30Trevor Lawrence. Yeah, this is wow.
- 1:12:33I'd go 22 Georgia, This is I have three teams that I hold in
- 1:12:37like the argument for best team of the playoff era and two of
- 1:12:42them are already in our final four.
- 1:12:44This is the third that I like. If I need to put my flag here, I
- 1:12:47will. This is my like, there's three
- 1:12:49teams I think we need to talk about and this is one of.
- 1:12:52This Stetson Bennett, the 2022 starting quarterback for
- 1:12:57Georgia, was enrolled in college for a full year before 2018.
- 1:13:03Trevor Lawrence got into HE. Got into high school.
- 1:13:08Before he no and I said before he was no, I'm just saying
- 1:13:11before he was because it's like you think about the those areas
- 1:13:16being completely separate because this is 6 years later.
- 1:13:20But I'm not I'm this is. Oh, yeah.
- 1:13:22No, no, no. It's 2 inside, but he started in
- 1:13:242017. Yeah.
- 1:13:25Yeah, I I see what you're saying.
- 1:13:27And then Trevor started at 2018 at Clemson, so it's kind of
- 1:13:31funny. But anyways, if you were to
- 1:13:33match these up, I agree. I think Georgia, you know.
- 1:13:39Here's my biggest mismatch. Georgia defensive line.
- 1:13:41Clemson offensive line. Because you're not exploiting
- 1:13:44that like Clemson could every other team, right, right.
- 1:13:48Jalen Carter against like a a mid dude from Greenville.
- 1:13:53You know, I don't know. Yeah, this was and I even think
- 1:13:57the the Georgia offense had matured and gotten even better
- 1:14:00this year. They averaged 4 points per game,
- 1:14:04for what it's worth. Yeah.
- 1:14:06Georgia did. They had a very special, Yeah,
- 1:14:10this was this was a very good. I mean, yeah, I agree.
- 1:14:13I think 22 Georgia beat wins in this game.
- 1:14:15This one's very fun. Very fun.
- 1:14:17What again? Several games.
- 1:14:19I'd love to see. All right, Daniel, our final
- 1:14:21four, we've got four different schools, which is good.
- 1:14:25Look, we've got like this. Representation.
- 1:14:27You've got different years, four different schools.
- 1:14:30That's right. All right, 2020 Alabama against
- 1:14:332016 Clemson. I would go. 2020 Alabama.
- 1:14:36Well, hold on. Just it's a weird year.
- 1:14:38Let's just name our final four really quick as like a OK and
- 1:14:42then we'll. 2020 Alabama, 2016 Clemson 2019 LSU 2022 Georgia is
- 1:14:49the Final Four. Some amazing teams.
- 1:14:51Very fun. All of them won a natty, so the
- 1:14:55ones that made it to this level were all national champions, as
- 1:14:58you would expect. But now we did that, so this
- 1:15:04makes sense. Now Daniel, three of these teams
- 1:15:07never lost a game, which makes this first round an easy pick
- 1:15:11for me with 2020 Alabama and 2016 Clemson.
- 1:15:17Right. Yeah.
- 1:15:18I need some pushback. Or is that one team ran the
- 1:15:22table and one team lost to Pittsburgh?
- 1:15:26When you put it like that, no, it the only thing that you know
- 1:15:32tarnishes anything for 2020 Bama is the fact that it was 2020 and
- 1:15:36there was not full stadium. I know everybody's just going to
- 1:15:39wonder, but I mean that that team was very, very special.
- 1:15:44Daniel here's the other side of the bracket is where if the
- 1:15:49bracket were different, if I had done the regions differently,
- 1:15:53I'll say these. This, in my opinion, the best
- 1:15:55two teams of the playoff era so far, our 2019 LSU in 2022
- 1:16:01Georgia. This is tough for me because I
- 1:16:03do think this is 1 and 2, but I lean 2019 LSU.
- 1:16:07It's just Daniel. I was at the SEC championship
- 1:16:10game as a Georgia fan, 19 standing in the end zone when it
- 1:16:17looks like Jordan Davis and I forget who else was chasing
- 1:16:20after Burrow is chasing Burrow to the sideline when there was
- 1:16:24still a game and and they got there pretty quick too.
- 1:16:27Bros running to the sideline. I'm like, they're going to run
- 1:16:29him out of bounds. He throws across his body for a
- 1:16:3375 yard touchdown to Justin Jefferson.
- 1:16:37And I was just like, I don't know how you beat like I'm just
- 1:16:41like, I'm in awe of what I'm watching that that is when you
- 1:16:44know, I have an affinity for LSU as a Georgia fan.
- 1:16:47You know this I've talked about a lot in the pod.
- 1:16:49I love everything about it. I love Tiger stadium, I love
- 1:16:51Tiger rag. I love the colors, I love the
- 1:16:54uniforms. I I have an appreciation for the
- 1:16:56fans. I've never been to a game in
- 1:16:58Tiger stadium, but I really want to.
- 1:16:59It was it started with this game.
- 1:17:01I I sat there being like, this is not a big rivalry.
- 1:17:04I'm disappointed we lost, but I have a feeling I just watched
- 1:17:06one of the greatest teams of all time.
- 1:17:08And I sat there because I had the state of the end because I
- 1:17:10was with LSU fans and I watched the confetti rained down and I'm
- 1:17:15like, all right, mad respect LSU fans.
- 1:17:17Like y'all stuff is cool. All the video again, this is
- 1:17:21where social media has kind of heard it is.
- 1:17:23I'm like the aura of that team, man was so special.
- 1:17:28Yeah, they were aura farming, as you as the kids say.
- 1:17:31Kids do say that, yeah, shout out Hunter.
- 1:17:34I'd I'd pick LSU, but I have I have rose colored and I'm saying
- 1:17:38this is a Georgia fan. I have rose colored glasses with
- 1:17:40that LSU team. I do think it would be a game.
- 1:17:43Yeah, I do think that it's funny, I think the 22 Georgia
- 1:17:46defense, even though people regard the 21 Georgia defense
- 1:17:49better than 22 Georgia defense, I would say the 22 Georgia
- 1:17:53defense would have been better equipped to handle those
- 1:17:57receivers because the. Secondary.
- 1:17:59Kamari last sitter was better. I think that Keely Ringo had
- 1:18:03grown in that role. That back three of Starks
- 1:18:07Bullard. Bullard.
- 1:18:08And Tucky Smith. But if you remember when Georgia
- 1:18:12played Ohio State, they were up against it.
- 1:18:16And so I can imagine that kind of a game coming to fruition
- 1:18:18with LSU issued out, except LSU had K York, if you remember, who
- 1:18:23could kick it 6 miles. And so I think that they would
- 1:18:27have hit the clutch. They were a clutch gene.
- 1:18:31So he didn't hit the clutch field goal.
