- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to Stuff you Should Know fromhouse stuff Works dot com. Hey,
- 0:12Speaker 1: welcome to the podcast. I'm Josh Clark. There's Charles Chucky.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Do you realize that some people might this might be
- 0:24Speaker 1: the first episode they listened to and they've already turned
- 0:28Speaker 1: it off and they're writing an iTunes review? Something's wrong
- 0:32Speaker 1: with that guy? Yeah? What's up with the manga? I
- 0:36Speaker 1: can't believe they're it's so popular? How does anyone listen
- 0:38Speaker 1: to him? Yeah? What's up with the Yeah? And how
- 0:43Speaker 1: are they in the top ten? And that guy? It
- 0:47Speaker 1: must be like the a MSR thing? What is that?
- 0:50Speaker 1: You know? Where that? Uh? People make videos where they're
- 0:53Speaker 1: like stroking your hair, but it's really they're just moving
- 0:56Speaker 1: their hand by the camera. They're talking like this, what
- 0:59Speaker 1: really we calming? But there's a subset of humans who
- 1:06Speaker 1: have a central nervous reaction. I just had one, but
- 1:10Speaker 1: it's pleasurable. They call him like a brain orgasm, a
- 1:15Speaker 1: a m s R. I think is R A s R.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I think it's a M s R. I don't remember
- 1:20Speaker 1: what it stands for. But it's like a meditative video
- 1:23Speaker 1: type of thing. I guess to some people, apparently you
- 1:27Speaker 1: have like a reaction to it, and it's very pleasurable.
- 1:30Speaker 1: But it's non sexual. It's it's well when you just
- 1:33Speaker 1: whisper neurological to me, I had a bad react, right,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I can imagine. So I I don't claim to be
- 1:40Speaker 1: one of those people. Man, oh man, this is getting
- 1:42Speaker 1: off to a good start. But we should do an
- 1:44Speaker 1: episode on that sometime. We people have requested it a
- 1:46Speaker 1: few times. Yeah, I want to. I'm gonna go find
- 1:48Speaker 1: out what it is. Is we have to go to
- 1:49Speaker 1: the trouble writing an article for because there's not one
- 1:52Speaker 1: that's okay. I got a few of those in the
- 1:54Speaker 1: hopper that I'd like to do. I do too, I
- 1:56Speaker 1: just haven't been able to get around to him. You've
- 1:58Speaker 1: been lazy. No, I've been busy. I said, we are
- 2:02Speaker 1: you ready? Are you familiar with halitosis? With with hold,
- 2:07Speaker 1: I've got a little intro for this. You've heard the
- 2:10Speaker 1: word halitosi is obviously we're about to do an episode
- 2:13Speaker 1: on halitosis, so I hope so. But even before this,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you've heard the word halitosis bad breath. It's like a
- 2:19Speaker 1: clinical term for bad breath. And that is true, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: it always was a clinical term for bad breath. But
- 2:25Speaker 1: the reason, Chuck, that you and I know that the
- 2:28Speaker 1: word halitosis means bad breath is thanks to a nice
- 2:31Speaker 1: little marketing scheme by the three guys who ran the
- 2:35Speaker 1: company that made listerine back in the nineteen twenties. Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 1: We we've talked about Dr Joesph lister before and that
- 2:43Speaker 1: listerine was an antiseptic, surgical antiseptic, yes, and that's and
- 2:47Speaker 1: it was marketed as a surgical antiseptic and then a
- 2:49Speaker 1: household antiseptic. And then they said, you know what we're
- 2:53Speaker 1: we need to expand our market share, so let's get
- 2:55Speaker 1: into other markets. And so they said mouthwash. We'll start
- 2:59Speaker 1: telling people use it mouthwash. And they made like their
- 3:01Speaker 1: office in turn, put some in his mouth, switch it around.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He died. So they went and reformulated it a little
- 3:08Speaker 1: bit at a little water, right, uh, and then bang boom,
- 3:12Speaker 1: they had listering the mouthwash. The problem was, as they said, well,
- 3:16Speaker 1: nobody's going to just start using a mouth wash for
- 3:19Speaker 1: no good reason. We have to appeal to their low
- 3:22Speaker 1: self esteem. And that's what they did by looking through
- 3:26Speaker 1: a medical dictionary, finding the word halitosis and saying that's it. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: it's an age old trick and adds is to prey
- 3:34Speaker 1: upon your how bad you feel about yourself on a
- 3:38Speaker 1: daily basis. Yeah, and especially using a medical jargon Michelle
- 3:43Speaker 1: who called it the medical gaze, where it was basically like,
- 3:46Speaker 1: if you add something that sounds medically to a problem
- 3:51Speaker 1: that your product can can take care of you, you've
- 3:55Speaker 1: got gangbusters right there. Yeah. And it was an archaic term,
- 3:58Speaker 1: Latin term that had gone away completely. Yeah. It comes
- 4:02Speaker 1: from the Latin halitus for breath and the Greek suffix osis,
- 4:06Speaker 1: which is used to indicate abnormality or a disease state. Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 1: but prelistering people weren't walking around saying the word halitosis.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It had gone the way of the dodo as a word. No.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And even still it was kind of like people weren't
- 4:18Speaker 1: really doing a lot to take care of their breath anyway.
- 4:21Speaker 1: It wasn't a thing until this group from the Listering
- 4:24Speaker 1: company said we're gonna make it a thing, and we're
- 4:28Speaker 1: gonna make using mouthwash to combat this thing a thing,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and they did within a decade. It was just basically
- 4:34Speaker 1: like that's what you did, use mouthwash every morning? Yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and they I thought it was pretty funny and where'd
- 4:39Speaker 1: you get that cracked? Yeah? Correct, Yeah, it was a
- 4:41Speaker 1: great article, and they said they went on to use
- 4:44Speaker 1: other words uh in advertising later on, like homatosis, which
- 4:48Speaker 1: is you didn't have a tract of furniture, and uh
- 4:52Speaker 1: bromodosis if you had smelly feet. Yeah, and I don't
- 4:55Speaker 1: think those that they didn't catch on as well, not
- 4:57Speaker 1: like halatosis. For some reason, halitosis catch on and as
- 5:01Speaker 1: a result, there are people out there who have haldophobia.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I'm one of them. Oh yeah, not like I don't
- 5:09Speaker 1: need to see a shrink. But um, my first girlfriend
- 5:13Speaker 1: had halitosis. Yeah, And I think I can say that
- 5:16Speaker 1: because I don't think she listens, and I don't think
- 5:18Speaker 1: she knows she was my first girlfriend. Like I never
- 5:21Speaker 1: said you're my first girlfriend, right, But yeah, she had
- 5:25Speaker 1: bad and I say halitos. It's to me, there's a
- 5:29Speaker 1: difference between Everyone gets bad breath occasionally, but there's a
- 5:32Speaker 1: certain tang that's very identifiable that I call halitosis. And
- 5:38Speaker 1: she had it, and I, you know, I felt like
- 5:41Speaker 1: I had to kiss her and stuff. This is my
- 5:42Speaker 1: first girlfriend. I had to learn how to do that junk. Yeah, man,
- 5:47Speaker 1: And it was. I have dreams to this day, halitosis
- 5:51Speaker 1: kissing dreams that I like, we'll see something like gorgeous
- 5:55Speaker 1: girl in my dream and I go to kiss her
- 5:56Speaker 1: and she has like this awful rotten breath. Like it's
- 5:59Speaker 1: a occurring dream. So I guess I have holodophobia. I'm
- 6:03Speaker 1: very aware of it, and that's why I have a
- 6:05Speaker 1: tongue scraper and all that junk. Well, apparently that's one
- 6:08Speaker 1: way to treat it. Yeah, well, we're getting ahead of ourselves,
- 6:11Speaker 1: so spoiler, and I should say I have had a
- 6:15Speaker 1: mild case of holodophobia. It may or may not have
- 6:17Speaker 1: been warranted. I don't know. I have my own microphone
- 6:19Speaker 1: cover for that reason. I know, but it's not because
- 6:22Speaker 1: you're protecting other people from your halitosis, right, You don't
- 6:25Speaker 1: want your nose and other people's stuff, right, Yes? Okay,
- 6:28Speaker 1: because the microphone cover at one point smells really bad
- 6:31Speaker 1: and I got revolted and I ordered one the next day. Right,
- 6:34Speaker 1: So how halidophobia refers to your fear of your bad breath,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you fearing other people? Yeah, yeah, that's a different thing then. Okay, Yeah,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I was worried I have bad breath. I guess part
- 6:47Speaker 1: of me, like I have that concern because of other
- 6:50Speaker 1: people's bad breath about myself too though. I think that's
- 6:53Speaker 1: why I'm like manic about brushing my tongue. Oh yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 1: that's where I really got it. I sat next to
- 6:57Speaker 1: a movie I sat next to some dude in a
- 6:59Speaker 1: movie theater once, and like he was facing forward, I
- 7:02Speaker 1: was facing forward and I almost couldn't sit next to
- 7:05Speaker 1: him the whole time because it was that bad. You
- 7:08Speaker 1: should have moved. I don't know why I didn't. Let's
- 7:12Speaker 1: become my self punishing, I guess. No. I used to
- 7:15Speaker 1: do that, like a concerts. I always said that I
- 7:17Speaker 1: would just always time be next to the most obnoxious
- 7:22Speaker 1: drunk and I used to just bother me and get
- 7:25Speaker 1: under my skin. But then I was like, you know what,
- 7:27Speaker 1: I'm just gonna start moving. Yeah, this didn't make me like.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I wasn't mad at the guy. Felt horrible for him,
- 7:32Speaker 1: almost to the point where like I was going to
- 7:35Speaker 1: get in my car and follow him home, and then
- 7:37Speaker 1: like after he got into his house, I was going
- 7:40Speaker 1: to come in after him and then sit him down
- 7:43Speaker 1: and then maybe we have like um, some milk or something,
- 7:47Speaker 1: get him all calmed down. Let him sleep, and then
- 7:50Speaker 1: when he woke up the next morning, I'd still be
- 7:51Speaker 1: sitting in his kitchen table, and then I would say
- 7:54Speaker 1: to him, I have something to tell you. And then
- 7:59Speaker 1: I would say, you have really bad breath, man, and
- 8:01Speaker 1: he'd say, no, crap, dude, I have a condition. Well
- 8:07Speaker 1: that's why you don't necessarily want to say anything to anybody,
- 8:10Speaker 1: because they may Yeah, so let's get down to this. Garlic, onions,
- 8:16Speaker 1: these are the things that people frequently associate, how it's
- 8:19Speaker 1: hostes with yeah, which is a bunch of bs. Well no,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I mean like it can give you bad breath, yeah,
- 8:24Speaker 1: But that to me, that's the temporary bad breath that
- 8:27Speaker 1: one gets just from food. Yeah. And the reason why
- 8:29Speaker 1: you do get bad breath from, say, like onions in
- 8:32Speaker 1: particulars because garlic, I'm sorry, garlic contains something called allison,
- 8:37Speaker 1: which in the stomach is converted to alle methyl sulfide,
- 8:41Speaker 1: which is not metabolized and which comes back up as
- 8:44Speaker 1: gas from your gut. So when you have bad breath
- 8:46Speaker 1: from onions, it's not onion particles in your mouth still,
- 8:50Speaker 1: that's gas leaking out of your gut into your mouth
- 8:54Speaker 1: and just kind of sticking there. For a couple of hours.
- 8:56Speaker 1: You ever take garlic bills? Yeah, there they Yeah, I'd
- 9:02Speaker 1: just rather eat garlic any day of the week. Yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I mean I eat tons of garlic. I love it.
- 9:06Speaker 1: But I have taken garlic pills in the past here
- 9:08Speaker 1: and there, and I will forget that I've taken one
- 9:10Speaker 1: and then you broke up like for breakfast. But it
- 9:14Speaker 1: doesn't taste like good garlic. It tastes aftful. It's medicinal garlic.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I didn't find I mean, the pill didn't taste like anything,
- 9:22Speaker 1: but my burps definitely taste garlic. See, it was for me,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I always. I just thought it was different, tastes different. Yeah,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'd just rather like cut the top off of a
- 9:30Speaker 1: whole bulb of garlic, put some olive oil on it,
- 9:33Speaker 1: wrap it and foil, or put it in your clay
- 9:36Speaker 1: garlic baker and put it in the oven for a
- 9:39Speaker 1: little while and show down. Baby. Yeah, just squeeze those
- 9:42Speaker 1: things right into your mouth. Good. Yeah, and it's so
- 9:45Speaker 1: good for you. We're in stinct today. Uh so you
- 9:51Speaker 1: say you you your bed is that you don't your
- 9:55Speaker 1: garlic and onions don't count to you? No, I think
- 9:59Speaker 1: they're there is bad breath you can just have because
- 10:02Speaker 1: maybe you forgot to brush, or obviously morning breath, which
- 10:04Speaker 1: we'll get to. And then I think some people, unfortunately,
- 10:08Speaker 1: are have a constant state of uh this very specific
- 10:13Speaker 1: bad breath. Yeah. So I think one in four people
- 10:17Speaker 1: have actual halitosis. Right, that seems a little high. But
- 10:22Speaker 1: maybe people are just doing a good job of masking it.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Maybe so, but some people aren't. So. Um, what it
- 10:31Speaker 1: comes down to, ultimately, chuck, halitosis is as simple as
- 10:36Speaker 1: the bacteria in our mouth. Yeah, the fact that we
- 10:38Speaker 1: have bacteria. It's the same thing as our armpits. Why
- 10:41Speaker 1: they smell bacteria breaking down stuff from our bodies beneficially
- 10:48Speaker 1: in distincty little gases, yeah, and giving off little bacteria
- 10:52Speaker 1: to the The average person has eight hundred types of
- 10:59Speaker 1: bacteria in the mouth, and um, they don't need Like
- 11:02Speaker 1: it's a good thing. They don't tell kids stuff like
- 11:04Speaker 1: this growing up in school because French kissing probably wouldn't happen,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you know, Well, well then maybe they should tell kids
- 11:13Speaker 1: in school there, but it's really kind of a disgusting thing.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Like you don't see people licking armpits. Some people might,
- 11:21Speaker 1: Ben Stiller, Yeah, what was that in Was it Ben
- 11:24Speaker 1: Stiller who was into it? I saw it? Or was
- 11:27Speaker 1: it a movie? Right? Yeah, I've seen that flirting with
- 11:30Speaker 1: Disaster Ben Still, but I can't remember if it was
- 11:33Speaker 1: Ben Stiller who was into it, or if it was
- 11:36Speaker 1: Josh Brolin was into Uh, Patricia Arquette's armpits, that's right, yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and Patricia Arquette was married to be still, Yeah, and
- 11:44Speaker 1: she let him lick her armpit. I love that movie.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You Can't Catch the Wind, remember that part um all right?
- 11:54Speaker 1: Back to the mouth and how disgusting it is. Uh.
- 11:57Speaker 1: They say, if you magnified just a single cell on
- 12:00Speaker 1: the surface of that tongue, you would see about a
- 12:02Speaker 1: hundred types of bacteria just on that cell. So this
- 12:06Speaker 1: this bacteria. When you eat and you swallow food after
- 12:10Speaker 1: masticating it, which isn't dirty, it means to uh, you
- 12:15Speaker 1: leave little particles in your mouth. It gets stuck in
- 12:18Speaker 1: your teeth there. Maybe it's like you have beginning periodonal disease.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It might get stuck in your gums along your teeth
- 12:25Speaker 1: a little bit. The very least, it's gonna get stuck
- 12:27Speaker 1: to the back of your tongue and it just kind
- 12:30Speaker 1: of sits there, and the bacteria in your mouth love
- 12:33Speaker 1: this stuff. It's food to them, and they break it
- 12:35Speaker 1: down into particles and particles and they're like, this is
- 12:37Speaker 1: pretty good, but I can't get the energy from it fully.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So I'm gonna break down the amino acids even further
- 12:42Speaker 1: and then bam. When I do, I'm going to basically
- 12:46Speaker 1: emit sulfur sulfuric gases, and that's where bad breath comes from.
- 12:52Speaker 1: There's sulfuric gases that are again a byproduct of the
- 12:57Speaker 1: bacteria eating the food particles in your mouth. Yeah, let's
- 13:00Speaker 1: over proteins. Yeah, and it's um. The mouth is a
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know, it's a great breeding ground for it because
- 13:07Speaker 1: it's clammy and warm and it's just got everything that
- 13:10Speaker 1: the bacteria loves to produce those stinky, stinky smells. Um.
- 13:16Speaker 1: But dry mouth can also cause halitosis because that's what
- 13:20Speaker 1: you get overnight and why you have stinky morning breath
- 13:22Speaker 1: because your saliva production decreases when you sleep, Otherwise you
- 13:26Speaker 1: just be a drooling mess. Um. I wonder why that
- 13:29Speaker 1: doesn't work during naps on your school desk. I don't know,
- 13:32Speaker 1: you know, I guess because you don't go to sleep
- 13:34Speaker 1: enough maybe or if like your face is pressing against wood,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it's a signal of your body to increase wake up,
- 13:41Speaker 1: the teacher is coming. But chronic dry mouth UM is
- 13:45Speaker 1: something that can affect people during the daytime as well.
- 13:47Speaker 1: It's called zero stomia and um. If you have zerostomia,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you're gonna have a harder time fighting your bad breath
- 13:56Speaker 1: because your mouth is always dry. Like the mouth the
- 13:59Speaker 1: saliva just acts as a natural mouthwah exactly. Not only
- 14:03Speaker 1: rinses away like food particles, it rints his way bacteria.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It rents is away the dead skin cells and dead
- 14:08Speaker 1: mouth cells that the bacteria also eat. Um. And Yeah,
- 14:12Speaker 1: the dryer it is, the less that action takes place.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And you've got stinky breath. Yeah. So if you're on
- 14:19Speaker 1: anahistamines or um any depressants or painkillers, uh, dry mouth
- 14:25Speaker 1: is a side effect of some of those drugs, so
- 14:27Speaker 1: you might have a harder time. Uh. And if you're
- 14:29Speaker 1: sick anyway, you're gonna stinky your breath too. Like if
- 14:32Speaker 1: you're fighting a sinus infection, let's say it's gross yes
- 14:37Speaker 1: breath because that mucus trickles back from your sinuses down
- 14:41Speaker 1: to your tongue and sits there and gets eaten up
- 14:45Speaker 1: to nasty stuff. Is this whole thing? I'm just cringing.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna have one of those dreams to it. There's
- 14:53Speaker 1: you could a sninky hello toastis breath dream? Yes, the
- 14:57Speaker 1: hot girl bad breath. It's always the same. Really know
- 15:00Speaker 1: you're having dreams about kissing hot girls with bad breath. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 1: she thinks it's funny. She thinks it's because of my uh,
- 15:07Speaker 1: repressed religious upbringing, repressed sexuality. Like I won't even in
- 15:11Speaker 1: my dreams allow myself to kiss the model. That's hilarious,
- 15:14Speaker 1: Like she'll have I call it vomit tongue. It's so gross.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that is pretty bad. Yeah. If they're the
- 15:19Speaker 1: worst dreams, I can't explain to you because they're really
- 15:21Speaker 1: headed in the right direction at first, you know, and
- 15:25Speaker 1: it's terrible. And when you're an old mary man, that's
- 15:28Speaker 1: all you got. I got, you know, vomit tongue. No,
- 15:32Speaker 1: just you know your dreams. You can't be I know
- 15:34Speaker 1: it to me. I'm just can't be assaulted for having
- 15:37Speaker 1: a dream. I guess you could, but that's not a
- 15:40Speaker 1: very nice wife. That give me my dream time. I'm
- 15:44Speaker 1: going to sleep. I'm donna sleeper right now. Let's pull
- 15:49Speaker 1: out with the keyto acidosis. Man, okay, so chuck when
- 15:53Speaker 1: you have um, when you eat onions, when you have
- 15:58Speaker 1: garlicen and food particles, all this stuff that's normal bad
- 16:00Speaker 1: breath stuff. There's also other things, metabolic things often that
- 16:05Speaker 1: can give you, like a a different type of breath.
- 16:09Speaker 1: It may or may not be bad. One bad one
- 16:13Speaker 1: is if you have liver problems, you're liver shutting down,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you're gonna have what's called mousey breath. Can you imagine
- 16:21Speaker 1: what mousey breath smells like? Like? Apparently your breath smells
- 16:25Speaker 1: like live writhing mice, mousey breath. I can't think of
- 16:30Speaker 1: what else it would denote. I don't know what a
- 16:32Speaker 1: mouse smells like. Uh sure, I mean, have you ever
- 16:37Speaker 1: smelled like a rodent cage? Yeah? But they smell like
- 16:40Speaker 1: cedar and poop? Is that what it smells like? That's
- 16:43Speaker 1: what they mean a cedar? Uh So it is keto acidosis,
- 16:48Speaker 1: the the no carbon effect. Yeah, okay, Yeah, that is
- 16:53Speaker 1: something that will warn you about if you're trying to
- 16:56Speaker 1: attain what's known as ketosis with like an apkins type
- 16:59Speaker 1: diet um. Some people, when they are reached that blissful
- 17:04Speaker 1: level of fat burning, it also takes their it's toll
- 17:07Speaker 1: on their their mouth and their breath. Yeah, it's like
- 17:10Speaker 1: a fruity, acid tony smell. Okay, that sounds better than mousey. Yeah,
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's it's gonna better than yeah. Yeah, when you're in keytosis,
- 17:19Speaker 1: you when you deprive your body of carbohydrates, it doesn't
- 17:23Speaker 1: have that energy to burn right there, so it starts
- 17:26Speaker 1: turning inward and going after your fat stores. And when
- 17:29Speaker 1: the body burns store fat, keytnes are what is released
- 17:34Speaker 1: as energy or burned as energy. And this, yeah, it's
- 17:38Speaker 1: the smell from burning keytones is what gives you that
- 17:41Speaker 1: fruity breath. Yeah. I've seen websites, you know that they
- 17:45Speaker 1: now have the articles. Of course, if you're if this
- 17:47Speaker 1: is the diet you want, this is how you can
- 17:48Speaker 1: help yourself. And one of the things us always eat bread.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, but all of a sudden, you're not
- 17:55Speaker 1: on that diet. Yeah, so that's no solution. Yeah, you
- 17:59Speaker 1: can get knocked that of quitos is pretty easy. I'm sure. Yeah,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I think eating bread would do. Uh well, I guess
- 18:06Speaker 1: we should talk about um after a message break maybe
- 18:09Speaker 1: how you can help yourself out if you have plitosis.
- 18:17Speaker 1: All right, so let's say you are sadly just one
- 18:21Speaker 1: of those people that just has that funky breath one
- 18:25Speaker 1: in four right, Yeah, if you're among that, it does
- 18:29Speaker 1: seem high. Yeah doesn't. And that's like chronic halitosis, right yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: where it's not just like you know, brushing your teeth
- 18:37Speaker 1: isn't gonna do the trick. Yeah, yeah, that sounds like
- 18:42Speaker 1: a fact brought to us by the Listerine company. It
- 18:45Speaker 1: might be, but like I said, maybe um of those
- 18:49Speaker 1: people are really trying their hardest so you don't notice it,
- 18:54Speaker 1: and other people are just smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee
- 18:57Speaker 1: all day, which is a bad combination. Yeah, it's pretty
- 19:00Speaker 1: bad combinations. Does somehow they become greater than the sum
- 19:03Speaker 1: of their party, you know? Yeah, but that's uh, that's
- 19:07Speaker 1: breakfast for college students, you know. Cigarettes. So what do
- 19:11Speaker 1: you do if you're if you're gonna battle this stuff,
- 19:13Speaker 1: if it's more than just something like just a breath
- 19:16Speaker 1: mant can handle what's going to happen here? Well, the
- 19:19Speaker 1: breath mant just good thing to mention that that can
- 19:21Speaker 1: provide a little temporary relief, but it's just masking the
- 19:25Speaker 1: funk underneath. Right. She's really not gonna get very far
- 19:28Speaker 1: as a solution, No, because all it's doing is creating
- 19:31Speaker 1: the sensation of freshness in your mouth. Yeah, because it
- 19:35Speaker 1: I get I don't know what breath mints do. Have
- 19:38Speaker 1: frequently wondered, like, what is like um um mental do
- 19:45Speaker 1: does that open up your pores? So like the air
- 19:48Speaker 1: feels colder and fresher? Oh, I don't know, Like what
- 19:51Speaker 1: creates that sensation? You don't know? That sounds like a
- 19:54Speaker 1: don't be dumb episode to me, but I think it
- 19:56Speaker 1: might be. Um. What you want to do is get
- 19:59Speaker 1: to the root of the problem, which is at bacteria
- 20:02Speaker 1: and uh, like we said, food particles in your teeth
- 20:06Speaker 1: um is a big cause. So brushing and flossing and
- 20:11Speaker 1: the old tongue scraper and brushing the back of the
- 20:13Speaker 1: tongue you scrape the tongue. Doesn't that make you gag? No,
- 20:17Speaker 1: it doesn't bother me. I've gotten used to it. I mean,
- 20:19Speaker 1: you know, occasionally, if I overreached, that might be a
- 20:21Speaker 1: little but I'm not like retching in the bathroom every morning.
- 20:26Speaker 1: I think we should keep a webcam in your bathroom
- 20:29Speaker 1: when you're getting ready, just to catch those times that
- 20:32Speaker 1: you do just make a comple vine compilation hilarious. Uh
- 20:39Speaker 1: So attacking the source of the food particles, and you know,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I have the fake tooth now, so I have to
- 20:44Speaker 1: be extra careful to really brush along there because why
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think it would be like they've made it out
- 20:51Speaker 1: of some new super polymer that like reflects bacteria. Now
- 20:56Speaker 1: that the tooth itself is not the source, but it's um.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You know where it meets the gum is not a
- 21:02Speaker 1: natural tooth. So yeah, I just have to like really
- 21:05Speaker 1: brush the crap out of that area. My gum, you
- 21:08Speaker 1: get the crap out. I don't use mouthwash that which
- 21:11Speaker 1: is interesting. No toothpaste, well apparently, um it's not necessarily
- 21:17Speaker 1: and plenty of mouthwash is a suggestion for this um,
- 21:20Speaker 1: specifically types that contain according to the British Medical Journal, uh,
- 21:25Speaker 1: chloro hexadrine glucinate, chlora hexadrine glucinate or what you want,
- 21:30Speaker 1: because they kill bacteria. I take issue with this. Yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 1: one of the main functions of mouthwash isn't to just
- 21:37Speaker 1: go in and kill bacteria. Although most mouthwashers do that. Um,
- 21:41Speaker 1: it's the swishing action loosens food particles and gets them
- 21:45Speaker 1: out from in between your teeth. What I'm saying is
- 21:52Speaker 1: you don't necessarily need to use a mouthwash that kills
- 21:55Speaker 1: bacteria because you kind of want healthy bacteria. You want
- 21:59Speaker 1: what's called the um uh an oral ecosystem in your
- 22:04Speaker 1: healthy oral ecosystem or ecology in your mouth uh you
- 22:09Speaker 1: want remember remember the poop Shake episode, the poop transplant
- 22:14Speaker 1: vehical transplant episode, we ended up talking about the microbiome
- 22:18Speaker 1: and how important it is to humanityature same thing with
- 22:22Speaker 1: our mouth. Yeah, you don't want to kill all that
- 22:24Speaker 1: bacteria now, And there's plenty of bacteria that causes problems,
- 22:27Speaker 1: like Streptococcus mutans is what gives us cavities. But there's
- 22:30Speaker 1: also plenty of beneficial bacteria where you would have a
- 22:33Speaker 1: mouthful of dead skin cells all over your tongue if
- 22:37Speaker 1: it weren't for this helpful bacteria breaking the stuff down.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It's your problem. Everybody wants to kill bacteria. That's not
- 22:44Speaker 1: necessarily a good thing. As a matter of fact, I
- 22:46Speaker 1: think we're learning more and more that it's not a
- 22:48Speaker 1: good thing. So I say avoid the mouthwash that kills
- 22:52Speaker 1: bacteria and just use some sort of mouthwash that maybe
- 22:56Speaker 1: has a minty flavor, but it's just really just swishing
- 22:59Speaker 1: the food particles out and getting rid of the bacteria's
- 23:02Speaker 1: food that's creating their stinky sulfur ducks. Yes, exactly, um.
- 23:09Speaker 1: And because getting rid of the food is a big
- 23:11Speaker 1: part of it, I would suggest brushing your teeth after
- 23:14Speaker 1: lunch too, you know, like don't make it just when
- 23:17Speaker 1: you get up and before you go to bed. I say,
- 23:19Speaker 1: go for three times a day. Whoa man who has
- 23:23Speaker 1: time for that? Everybody? Another good trick is to drink
- 23:28Speaker 1: a lot of water. Um. But you know, just keeping
- 23:31Speaker 1: your mouth hydrated daily basis is gonna help. You said
- 23:34Speaker 1: that saliva is like a natural mouth wash. Water helps.
- 23:39Speaker 1: It does the same thing, loosens food particles, gets rid
- 23:42Speaker 1: of dead skin cells. In the back of your tongue
- 23:44Speaker 1: apparently is like ground zero for it. Like I think
- 23:48Speaker 1: there's like twenty times more bacteria there than elsewhere because
- 23:53Speaker 1: it's like this bumpy surface that's out of the way
- 23:56Speaker 1: of all this other stuff, So things really stick and
- 23:59Speaker 1: accumulate back there. So that's the that's an area you
- 24:02Speaker 1: want to target. Apparently with the tongue scraper. Yeah, and
- 24:05Speaker 1: you could just brush it as well. I do both.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But if you are a grown adult and you're not
- 24:09Speaker 1: either brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper, then
- 24:13Speaker 1: you're not doing it right. Is that right? Yeah, somebody
- 24:15Speaker 1: needs to teach you. I give a quick part of
- 24:18Speaker 1: a quick you know, brush with with my toothbrush over
- 24:21Speaker 1: my tongue. But I worry about killing taste buds like
- 24:25Speaker 1: I love tasting things. You're not gonna kill any taste buds.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Sure you can kill taste buds with that. Uh, well,
- 24:32Speaker 1: I haven't killed any. Are you sure? Think about what
- 24:35Speaker 1: kind of a super taster you could be without your scraper? No,
- 24:40Speaker 1: I do worry about that. I'm kind of like, I'd
- 24:41Speaker 1: rather have low level bad breath and be able to
- 24:44Speaker 1: taste great stuff then have no bad breath whatsoever and
- 24:49Speaker 1: not be able to taste I would rather have no
- 24:51Speaker 1: bad breath and still taste everything. Well, yeah, that's the
- 24:55Speaker 1: holy grail. What kind of like flim flam world? Are
- 24:58Speaker 1: you living it? It's called Chuck's life. It's nice, it's nice.
- 25:03Speaker 1: If none of this stuff works for you, you you may
- 25:05Speaker 1: have a problem. Like you might want to go see
- 25:07Speaker 1: a dentist, uh, and maybe even a doctor. Well, yeah,
- 25:11Speaker 1: the dentist might say, yeah, I go the doctor you
- 25:15Speaker 1: have a mousey breath, which means your liver shutting down,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and find a new dentist. You know, there's a smell
- 25:21Speaker 1: test that they do that dennists do. Yeah, what they'll
- 25:25Speaker 1: do is still say, Okay, this is gonna be gross,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but I want you to breathe through your mouth and
- 25:31Speaker 1: I'm going to sniff close to your mouth. And then
- 25:35Speaker 1: they say, okay, now I want you to breathe through
- 25:37Speaker 1: your nose and I'm gonna sniff close to your nose,
- 25:40Speaker 1: and they can determine whether it's a nasal and like
- 25:44Speaker 1: a problem in your nasal cavity, I can give you
- 25:47Speaker 1: bad breath, you can have stinking sinuses, so gross, or
- 25:51Speaker 1: if it's in your mouth, and then they can further
- 25:54Speaker 1: to do like yeah, if it's not dentist doing this, yeah,
- 25:57Speaker 1: and if it's in your if it's coming through your nose,
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's suggests possibly not just your sinuses, but it could
- 26:03Speaker 1: be pulmonary to like you could have some sort of
- 26:05Speaker 1: lung problem that's creating gases that stink and they're coming
- 26:09Speaker 1: out of your nose rather than your mouth. So I
- 26:11Speaker 1: guess they train you to do that indental school. Huh.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I guess i'd have to. That's not a very popular day,
- 26:17Speaker 1: you know, everybody pair up. Oh my god, and there's
- 26:20Speaker 1: the one guy in the corner like eating a sandwich, Like,
- 26:23Speaker 1: what can I give a two more tips? Please get
- 26:27Speaker 1: ten more if you eat a crunchy breakfast like granola,
- 26:33Speaker 1: cereal or something like that, Okay, it's going to clear
- 26:35Speaker 1: out a lot of the gunk from the night before.
- 26:39Speaker 1: You just want to make sure you get rid of
- 26:40Speaker 1: all those food particles afterwards. And then if you're interested
- 26:44Speaker 1: in a mouth wash that is not antibacterial really certainly Yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Uh it's you take a half a cup of warm
- 26:55Speaker 1: water and eighth of a teaspoon of cinnamon and one
- 26:57Speaker 1: teaspoon of honey, swirl all together and uh, swish it
- 27:01Speaker 1: around and gargle it. That's like um, like old timey
- 27:06Speaker 1: mouthwash apparently. Yeah, and we could probably recommend apple cider
- 27:09Speaker 1: vinegar just for anything that's like the wonder the wonder liquid.
- 27:17Speaker 1: It seems like, dude, I was once on my way
- 27:19Speaker 1: to a full blown kidney or um, maybe urinary your
- 27:26Speaker 1: urinary infection, some bladder infected. Something was going on, and
- 27:30Speaker 1: it was starting to go downhill fast, and you muse,
- 27:33Speaker 1: like drink this and drink a lot of it. And
- 27:36Speaker 1: I started drinking apple cider vinegar and like raw cranberry juice,
- 27:40Speaker 1: like the real cranberry juice. UM over like about an
- 27:44Speaker 1: eight to twelve hour period, like really hit it and
- 27:47Speaker 1: um gone, and like it was happening, like that happening
- 27:51Speaker 1: was going on, and like I afforded it. He stopped
- 27:54Speaker 1: the happening. I do a shot every morning now of
- 27:57Speaker 1: apple cider vinegar, and don't get the just the stuff
- 28:01Speaker 1: in the store that you you should be cooking and
- 28:03Speaker 1: cleaning with. There's the I can't remember the brand, but
- 28:06Speaker 1: there's the the super potable one, but the one that, yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 1: the one that that you'll find it a health food store. Yeah,
- 28:14Speaker 1: I can't remember the name of it. But there's like
- 28:16Speaker 1: one brand that everyone goes to, and it's it's tough. Man.
- 28:19Speaker 1: If you ever just do a straight shot of it
- 28:20Speaker 1: without deluding it, it's hardcore. Yeah. Yeah. Everything I was
- 28:24Speaker 1: doing was taking maybe a shot and then deluding it
- 28:27Speaker 1: in like eight ounces of water and it's still very difficult. Yeah,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you can do it though, especially when you're fighting off
- 28:34Speaker 1: some sort of infection. Yeah, and you want to brush
- 28:36Speaker 1: your teeth after that, because scs just brush your teeth
- 28:39Speaker 1: all the time. Uh. If you want to learn more
- 28:42Speaker 1: about halitosis, I don't know what more you could possibly learn,
- 28:45Speaker 1: but you can try. You can type that word into
- 28:47Speaker 1: the search part how stuff works dot com and it
- 28:50Speaker 1: will bring up this article. And since I said search parts,
- 28:53Speaker 1: time for a listener. Ma'm We're gonna address our April
- 28:57Speaker 1: Fool's prank officially here with this one. Um. I want
- 29:01Speaker 1: to say, first of all, Josh, you and Ben. I
- 29:06Speaker 1: was blown away by the performance. You guys sold it
- 29:09Speaker 1: so hard like and we just threw it together. We
- 29:12Speaker 1: were like, hey, let's just try. It wasn't some big plot.
- 29:15Speaker 1: We there's no practice plan for weeks and weeks like, hey,
- 29:18Speaker 1: maybe we should do an Apri Fool's joke this year.
- 29:20Speaker 1: And I said, hey, maybe I quit the show and
- 29:22Speaker 1: Ben took my place, and you guys just waned it
- 29:24Speaker 1: and like nailed it. Man. I was sitting here beside
- 29:27Speaker 1: you and I felt like I was watching my own funeral. Yeah,
- 29:31Speaker 1: it's weird. Yeah. You kept going like cut, cut, stop, stop,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and we're like, no, we have to press on. So
- 29:36Speaker 1: we're not jokesters typically, but it was I think it
- 29:39Speaker 1: was the only one to be released on April Fools Day.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Was the first time we had the opportunity to release
- 29:44Speaker 1: one on April Fools and look out two years from now,
- 29:46Speaker 1: because that'll be a yeah yeah. But if we do
- 29:49Speaker 1: like Josh left the show, everyone be like no, no, no,
- 29:52Speaker 1: or they'll be expecting that yeah, and we'll do it
- 29:56Speaker 1: and they'll be like, well, wait a minute, they thought that.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I would think that, you know, maybe we could give
- 30:00Speaker 1: you like I don't know, you could have a heart
- 30:02Speaker 1: attack on the show or something. Uh. But anyway, we
- 30:07Speaker 1: got an outpouring of people because I was dead or missing.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I know, people really really reacted to that. Like a
- 30:15Speaker 1: lot of people said they didn't realize how much they
- 30:19Speaker 1: needed you until well we're gone. And yeah, there were
- 30:23Speaker 1: plenty of people who said, like Josh, I pit had
- 30:24Speaker 1: been you, I would have felt the same way. But
- 30:26Speaker 1: um well I got to play the martyr. I got
- 30:28Speaker 1: the plumb roll. It was nice. It's like I got
- 30:30Speaker 1: had to do nothing and just get showered with actualation,
- 30:32Speaker 1: but it was it was very neat to see, like
- 30:34Speaker 1: people were like, never leave, don't ever do that again,
- 30:37Speaker 1: and it was pretty cool. Actually yeah, and also I
- 30:40Speaker 1: want to say I'm a half of Ben. He asked
- 30:42Speaker 1: us to to let everybody know whenever we could that
- 30:45Speaker 1: he actually was purposely sounding terrible. What he was doing.
- 30:48Speaker 1: He like that was play acting. Yeah. Yeah. The whole
- 30:51Speaker 1: point was like we wanted it to be super awkward, right,
- 30:54Speaker 1: I think you guys achieved that. Okay, So so go ahead,
- 30:56Speaker 1: back from the dead Chuck. So this from Matt from
- 30:59Speaker 1: Athens or Joe, Uh go dogs. Hey guys, my girlfriend
- 31:03Speaker 1: I have been listeners for years. I didn't realize just
- 31:05Speaker 1: how important the show was to us though, until your
- 31:07Speaker 1: April fools Day show. I had listened to the episode
- 31:09Speaker 1: before she did, and he didn't even tell her. That's
- 31:13Speaker 1: kind of mean. And I was keen on setting her
- 31:15Speaker 1: up for the gag, so I sat it out in
- 31:16Speaker 1: the kitchen table and told her that, uh stuff you
- 31:19Speaker 1: should know at some big news. I knew she'd be
- 31:21Speaker 1: sucked into the prank, but was not prepared for what
- 31:23Speaker 1: happened next. She started to cry and denounced the show
- 31:26Speaker 1: with one of you gone, saying she would stop listening.
- 31:29Speaker 1: She was worried about Chuck. I even had people are
- 31:31Speaker 1: worried about Emily. They were like they thought Emily was
- 31:34Speaker 1: in the hospital. Chuck started um. She said she would
- 31:39Speaker 1: stop listening and was worried about Chuck and started tossing
- 31:41Speaker 1: out possible explanations like the best of conspiracy theorists. She
- 31:45Speaker 1: was so sad that I had to fast forward to
- 31:47Speaker 1: the reveal. After her surprising yet pretty cute reaction, I
- 31:52Speaker 1: was hoping to swap out her emotional connection for a
- 31:56Speaker 1: birthday shout out. She's a contemporary dancer and uses the
- 31:59Speaker 1: id is in your podcast and her classes in choreography.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I think dances about Alan Turning. I gotta see this. Yeah,
- 32:07Speaker 1: it's crazy. I ad met this pretty crass way of
- 32:10Speaker 1: getting a happy birthday, but I think it's worth a shot. So, Matt,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you didn't tell us your girlfriend's name, So we're just
- 32:16Speaker 1: gonna say happy birthday to Matt's girlfriend from Athens. Happy
- 32:19Speaker 1: birthday Matt's girlfriend. I'm gonna guess the Jennifer Matt enjoy
- 32:22Speaker 1: sleeping on the couch this evening. You know, we fooled
- 32:25Speaker 1: some of our friends even Joe and Dazzo texted me
- 32:28Speaker 1: and said, you guys actually fooled me for about eight seconds.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Is that right? Yeah? Yeah, we got a lot of
- 32:32Speaker 1: people who said, like, I didn't fall for anything all day,
- 32:36Speaker 1: and the only people who got me the stuff. You
- 32:38Speaker 1: should know it's because you guys like destroyed it and
- 32:40Speaker 1: then the one with me for a minute, I thought
- 32:41Speaker 1: I was off the show. Have to leave. The ones
- 32:44Speaker 1: that I felt bad about though, we're the ones who
- 32:47Speaker 1: listened to it like after April one. Yeah, yeah, and
- 32:50Speaker 1: we're like Australia. Yeah, and they didn't realize it was
- 32:52Speaker 1: the it was yeah exactly. But yes, so everyone, thank
- 32:57Speaker 1: you very much for the outpouring of emotion. We both
- 33:00Speaker 1: feel very loved. Yeah, it's it's sure. I mean, we
- 33:03Speaker 1: know people like the show, but when you hear stuff
- 33:05Speaker 1: like that, it's like a while. Yeah, gonna depend on
- 33:07Speaker 1: this and uh, we know now that we're not allowed
- 33:10Speaker 1: to ever leave. Nope, it's well go out in a
- 33:12Speaker 1: murder suicide if anything. Cool agreed, So if you guys
- 33:18Speaker 1: love us so much, you can hang out with us
