- 0:00Good morning everyone, welcome back.
- 0:03It is friendly and I'm so happy that y'all are joining me today
- 0:07for another episode. Today we're going to be in
- 0:10Matthew chapter 23 verses one through 12.
- 0:14And before we jump into reading, I want to say that this is kind
- 0:18of the grand finale of lessons that are aimed directly at the
- 0:22religious leaders. We've been sitting with these
- 0:25passages and it has not been accidental.
- 0:28Jesus is really wrapping something up for us today.
- 0:31So I do want to say, too, that before the passage I'm going to
- 0:35read, he completely shuts down their questioning.
- 0:39And they've been debating him back and forth, trying to trap
- 0:44Jesus with theology, technical questions of the law.
- 0:48And here we see, instead of continuing the arguments, Jesus
- 0:52asks one final question. What do you think about the
- 0:56Messiah? Whose son is he?
- 0:59And that's not just a debate question.
- 1:02That is the most important question that you'll ever
- 1:05answer. Who is the Messiah to you?
- 1:08And so after that the debates are over.
- 1:11So Matthew 23 isn't just Jesus repeating himself, it is him
- 1:15slamming the door shut on the arguments and turning to the
- 1:19crowds and his disciples to expose what was really driving
- 1:23all of this. So we are going to begin in
- 1:27verse one. Then Jesus addressed both the
- 1:32crowds and his disciples and said, the religious scholars and
- 1:36the Pharisees sit in Moses's seat as the authorized
- 1:40interpreters of the law. So listen and follow what they
- 1:44teach, but don't do what they do.
- 1:47For they tell you one thing and they do another.
- 1:50They tie on your backs an oppressive burden of religious
- 1:54obligations and insist that you carry them, but you will never,
- 1:59but they will never, lift a finger to help ease your load.
- 2:03Everything they do is done for show and to be noticed by
- 2:06others. They want to be seen as holy, so
- 2:09they wear oversized prayer boxes on their arms and foreheads with
- 2:14scriptures inside and wear extra long tassels on their outer
- 2:18garments. They crave the seats of highest
- 2:21honor at banquets and in their meeting places, and how they
- 2:25love to be admired by men with their titles of respect,
- 2:28aspiring to be recognized in public and have others call them
- 2:32reverend. But you are to be different from
- 2:36that. You are not to be called Master,
- 2:39for you have only one Master, and you are all brothers and
- 2:43sisters. And you are not to be addressed
- 2:46as Father, for you have one Father who is in heaven, nor are
- 2:51you to be addressed as teacher, for you have one teacher, the
- 2:55anointed one. The greatest among you will be
- 2:58the one who always serves others.
- 3:02Remember this, if you have a lofty opinion of yourself and
- 3:06seek to be honored, you will be humbled.
- 3:10But if you have a modest opinion of yourself and choose to humble
- 3:14yourself, you will be honored. OK, so Jesus begins talking
- 3:22about the teachers of the law, the Pharisees, and he mentioned
- 3:25something called Moses's seat. Now Moses's seat was where the
- 3:30distinguished elders, they sat in the ancient synagogue to
- 3:34teach, and it symbolized authority and responsibility to
- 3:38handle God's law faithfully. Jesus is very clear here.
- 3:44He's not rebuking the law itself.
- 3:46He says to follow the law that they teach, but he's rebuking
- 3:50the people that are teaching it. Here's the thing.
- 3:54These leaders, they had made human traditions and laws equal
- 3:58to God's commands. They told others to obey what
- 4:02they themselves would not follow.
- 4:05And they practice religious rituals to be seen not to
- 4:09ultimately honor God. And he exposes their heart
- 4:15behind all of it. They did not want surrender.
- 4:19They wanted status. They didn't want to be holy.
- 4:22They wanted to appear holy. They desired the position of
- 4:27leadership, not loyalty to God. And they put their own identity
- 4:31on this pedestal and they ended up serving themselves in their
- 4:36own authority and their name instead of their ultimate
- 4:40authority in heaven. So I don't want us to think that
- 4:46this just stops at this point in time because this still applies
- 4:50today. Y'all, We can know the Bible,
- 4:54people can quote verses, you can show up to church or be involved
- 4:59in Christian environments and still not allow Jesus to
- 5:03actually change you on the inside.
- 5:06Some people, they follow Jesus, but selectively you might listen
- 5:12to what's comfortable or ignore what truly rebukes and
- 5:17challenges you. And honestly, some people might
- 5:21would rather be a quote and quote someone, be known or
- 5:25respected and impressive instead of the quiet surrender of your
- 5:31heart to God and giving him the glory.
- 5:34Now I also do want to be clear that having nice things, having
- 5:38influence or privilege, this is not automatically simple.
- 5:42Some people are given more by God and honor him through how
- 5:47they steward their resources. But just consider how if you're
- 5:52not super careful with those things, they can become
- 5:55distractions. We see in Job 1/21 he says the
- 6:00Lord gives and the Lord takes away.
- 6:03So he might bless you with a lot, but in an instant he can
- 6:06also take that away. So our identity and worth cannot
- 6:11be in what we have. And the real question is, are
- 6:15you using what you have to honor God or are you using it to
- 6:20elevate yourself? Because y'all, God is so much
- 6:26more concerned with who has your heart than what you have access
- 6:30to. Jesus goes on to say not to
- 6:35elevate titles like Teacher or Father or Leader above God.
- 6:40This doesn't mean that we don't respect our earthly authority.
- 6:44I talked about this in a few episodes ago.
- 6:46We owe our authority respect where it is due.
- 6:51But we answer to one name above all.
- 6:55Jesus is the name above every name.
- 6:58His is the only one that lasts. And to put it into perspective,
- 7:03just think about the most powerful leaders from 100 years
- 7:07ago. This could be a commanding
- 7:10officer in the Army or a president in like the 1800s
- 7:14authorities. But y'all, how many of us
- 7:18actually remember all of those names?
- 7:21That's not meant to be disrespectful, but for me at
- 7:24least it put it into perspective that earthly titles, they fade,
- 7:29they're so fleeting. But God's glory in Jesus name is
- 7:35the only one that is sustained throughout centuries.
- 7:39So if you desire leadership, Jesus makes it clear check your
- 7:45intentions. Because in God's Kingdom,
- 7:48greatness does not mean being elevated or superior.
- 7:53It means willingly lowering yourself for the good of others.
- 7:59So here's a few heart shack questions that I'm going to
- 8:02leave y'all with #1 Are you living to appear superior or to
- 8:08live as a servant? 2 Do you desire to be truly holy
- 8:13on the inside or just look holy on the outside?
- 8:18Three, do you value position more than a right heart posture
- 8:23before God? And four, say you're given the
- 8:28choice. You can have a big title with
- 8:32shallow intimacy, or you can be more hidden, be a quote UN
- 8:38quote, more normal person, but with a deeper intimacy with the
- 8:42Lord. Which one would you choose?
- 8:46Because Jesus says what is inside a person eventually
- 8:50produces fruit. Good fruit comes from a good
- 8:54tree. Bad fruit comes from a bad tree,
- 8:57and God will bring what's hidden into the light.
- 9:01First Corinthians 4-5 He will bring to light what is hidden in
- 9:05darkness and will expose the motives of the heart.
- 9:10This is not to shame, but it is to reveal the truth.
- 9:13And we have to analyze our motives because they will be
- 9:18revealed. So let's go to the Lord in
- 9:21prayer right now. Heavenly Father God, you see
- 9:29what is beneath the surface. You know the true fruit that our
- 9:35lives are producing and what our intentions are behind them.
- 9:41Lord, where our hearts have leaned toward image instead of
- 9:47utmost obedience to you, would you bring clarity to that?
- 9:52Where we've chased recognition rather than an intimate
- 9:58relationship with you, would you bring correction?
- 10:03Father, help us to live for what lasts, to honor Your name above
- 10:08our own, to walk in humility just like Jesus did.
- 10:13Because our names, when we pass away, they will not last, but
- 10:18yours will forever and forever. So let our lives reflect hearts
- 10:24that are truly 100% yours. We ask this all in your name,
- 10:30Jesus. Amen.
- 10:32OK, well praying that y'all have a great rest of your day.
- 10:35Happy Tuesday and I will see y'all on the next episode.
