- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, that felt different.
- 0:02Speaker 2: The John Summerall era is officially underway at Florida, and
- 0:07Speaker 2: we are going to talk about it in this video
- 0:10Speaker 2: presented to you by PrizePix. Don't forget, new users can

- 0:19Speaker 2: lineups instantly.
- 0:21Speaker 1: If you're new to this channel, if you.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Just started following college football, or maybe you've been taking
- 0:25Speaker 2: a break and you're back now, dialed in now that
- 0:27Speaker 2: the season is upon us, Make sure you're subscribed to
- 0:30Speaker 2: the channel so you don't miss anything. Guys, if you
- 0:34Speaker 2: were looking for an opening statement, I would say that
- 0:38Speaker 2: 66 points is a pretty decent one. Florida beats FAU
- 0:44Speaker 2: 66-21 in the swamp, moves to 1-0, and there was
- 0:48Speaker 2: a lot to like about this game.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Now, was it perfect? Absolutely not. In fact, John Cumberall
- 0:54Speaker 1: had pretty harsh.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Words about the defense afterwards. And we're going to get
- 0:58Speaker 2: into that because I do think there are some legitimate
- 1:00Speaker 2: things Florida needs to clean up before the competition gets
- 1:03Speaker 2: considerably tougher. But offensively, my goodness. Florida finished with 624
- 1:11Speaker 2: yards offense, 343 through the air, and 281 on the ground.
- 1:16Speaker 2: The Gators averaged 9.3 yards per play, scored touchdowns on
- 1:21Speaker 2: all eight of their red zone trips, and did not
- 1:24Speaker 2: punt a single time. Alec Clark dressed for the game,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and apparently his job Saturday night was essentially.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Just to hold for extra points because there would be
- 1:35Speaker 1: no point for the.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Gators, which, you know, that kind of makes my special
- 1:38Speaker 2: teams heart a little bit sad, but I'll take 66
- 1:41Speaker 2: points any day of the week. It's a pretty good
- 1:44Speaker 2: night for an offense. And I think the thing that
- 1:46Speaker 2: stood out to me more than.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Anything was that Florida looked explosive.
- 1:51Speaker 2: We have talked so much during the offseason about wanting
- 1:55Speaker 2: to see an offense that puts pressure on a defense.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Not one that consistently needs 12 or 13 plays to score.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Not one where every third down feels like a life
- 2:08Speaker 2: or death situation. Florida created chunk plays. They got the
- 2:12Speaker 2: ball to the playmakers in space. They pushed it down
- 2:16Speaker 2: the field. And when FAU made a couple of.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Runs at them.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Florida answered immediately, and that is what good offenses do.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Let's start with Aaron Filo.
- 2:29Speaker 2: There was a lot of anticipation around his first start
- 2:31Speaker 2: as a Florida Gator, and I honestly, I thought Filo
- 2:34Speaker 2: looked about as comfortable as you could realistically ask in
- 2:39Speaker 2: a game one. He finished 16 of 21 for 275 yards,
- 2:43Speaker 2: three passing touchdowns and one interception, plus another touchdown on
- 2:47Speaker 2: the ground. And Even the interception, Summerall said it afterwards,
- 2:51Speaker 2: he really didn't put that one on Philo. He thought
- 2:54Speaker 2: it was a ball that should have been caught. What
- 2:57Speaker 2: I liked most wasn't necessarily any particular throw. It was
- 3:02Speaker 2: how comfortable he looked operating Buster Faulkner's offense.
- 3:06Speaker 1: He knew where he wanted to go with the football.
- 3:08Speaker 2: He got it out. He distributed it to a bunch
- 3:11Speaker 2: of different guys. And Florida wasn't afraid to attack vertically.
- 3:15Speaker 2: We saw that immediately. Florida gets the football for the
- 3:19Speaker 2: first time, backed up at its own six-yard line, drives
- 3:23Speaker 2: 94 yards, and Philo gets the ball to Vernell Brown
- 3:26Speaker 2: III for a 49-yard touchdown.
- 3:28Speaker 1: And that was a tone setter.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Vernell catches six passes for 117 yards and has his
- 3:35Speaker 2: first career touchdown as a Gator and looked exactly like
- 3:39Speaker 2: the player we have spent all offseason talking about. Then
- 3:43Speaker 2: Florida gets the football back, and three plays later, Philo
- 3:46Speaker 2: hits Bailey Stockton for another touchdown, and then it's 14-0.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And Florida scored.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Touchdowns on its first two possessions for the first time
- 3:55Speaker 2: since 2023, guys. And that's what I mean when I
- 3:59Speaker 2: say this game felt different. It wasn't just, okay, Florida
- 4:04Speaker 2: is more talented than FAU, and eventually they'll wear them down.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It was attack, attack, attack. Florida was dictating the game.
- 4:12Speaker 2: And we haven't consistently seen enough of that around here.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I'm going to take a short break from this video
- 4:17Speaker 2: to give some love to our partners over at Alumni Hall. Guys,
- 4:21Speaker 2: don't forget, they have given us a discount code you

- 5:00Speaker 2: purchase online at alumnihall.com or in their store. Okay, now then,
- 5:06Speaker 2: of course, I want to talk about who I consider
- 5:09Speaker 2: the star.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Of the game, Jaden Baugh. What else can you even
- 5:14Speaker 1: say about him? 14 carries, 160 yards, three touchdowns. That's 11.4
- 5:16Speaker 1: yards per carry.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And he had a 61-yard run, which is now the
- 5:23Speaker 2: longest run of his Florida career.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Do you remember how last season ended?
- 5:27Speaker 2: 38 carries, 266 yards against Florida State. So over his
- 5:32Speaker 2: last two games in the swamp, Jaden Baugh has rushed
- 5:36Speaker 2: for 426 yards and five touchdowns.
- 5:40Speaker 1: That's absurd.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And I don't think Florida even came close to having
- 5:45Speaker 2: to really lean on him in this game. And I
- 5:48Speaker 2: think that's probably the scary part. Last year, there were
- 5:51Speaker 2: times where it felt like, okay, Jaden, we are going
- 5:53Speaker 2: to need you to drag this entire offense down the field.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Saturday night? He was just one of about six different
- 6:02Speaker 1: problems that FAU had to solve. You've got VB3.
- 6:05Speaker 2: You've got Dallas Wilson. You've got TJ Abrams catching a
- 6:08Speaker 2: 63-yard ball. You've got Bailey Stockton. You've got Luke Harpering.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You've got Philo willing to run the football. And then
- 6:16Speaker 2: you've got a 225-pound running back who can apparently rip
- 6:20Speaker 2: off a 61-yard run.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Good luck.
- 6:24Speaker 2: And I loved something Summerall said afterward. He basically joked
- 6:28Speaker 2: that when they don't know what to do offensively, they
- 6:31Speaker 2: just give the ball to number 13. That's not exactly
- 6:33Speaker 2: the world's most complicated offensive philosophy, but I also can't
- 6:37Speaker 2: say I disagree with it. And maybe the most encouraging
- 6:40Speaker 2: part of that ball performance was the explosiveness, because I
- 6:43Speaker 2: think that is something that this staff has specifically challenged
- 6:48Speaker 2: him to improve on. He's always been powerful. He's always
- 6:51Speaker 2: been difficult to tackle. But if he starts turning those
- 6:54Speaker 2: 10 or 12 yard runs into a 40, a 50,
- 6:57Speaker 2: a 60 yard run, we're talking about one of the
- 7:00Speaker 2: best running backs in college football at that point. The
- 7:03Speaker 2: other offensive piece I really want to talk about is
- 7:05Speaker 2: the offensive line, because that was definitely my biggest question
- 7:09Speaker 2: coming into this game. There are lots of new pieces.
- 7:11Speaker 2: There have been shuffling. You've got guys playing together for
- 7:14Speaker 2: the first time in a real game. And no, FAU
- 7:18Speaker 2: isn't Georgia or Texas or LSU, and we all understand that.
- 7:23Speaker 2: But you can only evaluate what happens in front of you.
- 7:26Speaker 2: And Florida ran for 281 yards at 6.9 yards per carry.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Philo was never sacked. Florida as a team allowed only
- 7:34Speaker 2: one sack all night, and that came with Tramell Jones
- 7:37Speaker 2: in the game. There was also only three Florida penalties
- 7:40Speaker 2: for 32 yards. Game one offensive lines are bad. messy sometimes,
- 7:46Speaker 2: false starts, alignment issues, protection busts, guys going the wrong way.
- 7:50Speaker 2: That really wasn't the story on Saturday night. Semrall specifically
- 7:54Speaker 2: said afterward that he was pleased at how cleanly the
- 7:58Speaker 2: offense operated procedurally. And he also pointed out something I
- 8:02Speaker 2: think is worth watching when you go back and rewatch
- 8:05Speaker 2: this game. He was pumped about how the receivers blocked.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And that's something this staff has talked about over and
- 8:12Speaker 2: over again. They want a physical football team. And physical
- 8:16Speaker 2: doesn't just mean your offensive lineman. If you want those
- 8:20Speaker 2: Jadenbaugh runs to turn into 30, 40, 50-yard plays, somebody
- 8:24Speaker 2: has to handle the safety or the corner once he
- 8:27Speaker 2: gets through that first level.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Florida's receivers did that on Saturday night.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I also want to give some love to Duke Clark
- 8:34Speaker 2: because with Evan Pryor unable to go because of a
- 8:37Speaker 2: hip issue, Clark got an opportunity and he absolutely.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Took advantage of it.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Eight carries, 65 yards, and a touchdown, plus a 10-yard
- 8:47Speaker 2: touchdown reception. That's 8.1 yards per carry. And I think
- 8:52Speaker 2: that just so highlights why these first couple of games
- 8:57Speaker 2: are really important. Now, obviously, Florida wants to win them comfortably.
- 9:01Speaker 2: But Florida also needs to be able to figure out
- 9:04Speaker 2: who can play, who's dependable, who can help you when
- 9:07Speaker 2: somebody goes down, who can give Jaden Baugh a breather
- 9:10Speaker 2: in October. We learned something about Duke Clark on Saturday night.
- 9:16Speaker 2: And Tramell Jones got some valuable work as well. He
- 9:18Speaker 2: went four for five for 68 yards and a touchdown,
- 9:21Speaker 2: including a touchdown to Micah Jones with 25 seconds remaining.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Watching Micah Jones celebrate was so cool. And I know
- 9:29Speaker 2: that there are.
- 9:29Speaker 1: People who will probably say, why are you still throwing
- 9:33Speaker 1: the ball when the game is over?
- 9:35Speaker 2: But I completely agree with Coach Summerall's explanation. These young
- 9:39Speaker 2: guys need reps. You spend all week asking them to
- 9:43Speaker 2: practice hard, and then they finally get into a game,
- 9:46Speaker 2: and then you're supposed to tell them.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Not to play? Absolutely not. Run the offense.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Let Tramell Jones operate it. Let these young receivers run routes.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Let the backup offensive linemen block. Develop your football team
- 10:02Speaker 2: because you may need those guys later. Now I want
- 10:06Speaker 2: to talk about the defense. And I think this is
- 10:08Speaker 2: where the conversation changes a little bit because you look
- 10:11Speaker 2: at that 21 points and you might say, all right,
- 10:15Speaker 2: what's the problem? There were good things. Florida picked off
- 10:18Speaker 2: Caden Beltkamp twice. DJ Coleman had the first interception and
- 10:22Speaker 2: later broke up a pass that ended up becoming Dijon
- 10:25Speaker 2: Johnson's interception. Cameron James had a sack and a forced fumble.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Miles Graham led Florida with 10 tackles and shared a sack.
- 10:33Speaker 2: There were moments when the talent showed up. But FAU
- 10:37Speaker 2: ran 90 offensive plays, 90. They had 25 first downs.
- 10:42Speaker 2: They converted 11 of 22 third downs and 4 of
- 10:47Speaker 2: 7 fourth downs. That's the part that bothered Summerall, and
- 10:51Speaker 2: it should bother Florida. Because against a better football team,
- 10:57Speaker 2: you're not going to get away with letting drives continue
- 11:00Speaker 2: over and over and over again. Florida's defense was on
- 11:03Speaker 2: the field for 90 steps because it couldn't consistently get
- 11:08Speaker 2: off the field. And this has been one of the
- 11:10Speaker 2: biggest gripes about Florida's defense for years. Last year, statistically,
- 11:14Speaker 2: they were pretty good, except for in that third down
- 11:17Speaker 2: conversion stat.
- 11:19Speaker 1: They couldn't get off the field.
- 11:21Speaker 2: And that has to change because the competition is about
- 11:24Speaker 2: to get a hell of a lot better. And Summerall
- 11:26Speaker 2: didn't sugarcoat it afterwards. He actually described the defense as, quote,
- 11:30Speaker 2: atrocious at times. He said he didn't think the defense
- 11:33Speaker 2: is as good as it thinks it is, and he
- 11:35Speaker 2: warned that if they don't improve quickly, there are lots
- 11:38Speaker 2: of areas where they could get exposed. And I love
- 11:41Speaker 2: that because Florida won by 45 points. This would have
- 11:45Speaker 2: been really easy for a first-year head coach to walk
- 11:48Speaker 2: into a press conference and say, hey, great win, proud
- 11:51Speaker 2: of the guys, really special night. We'll watch the film
- 11:54Speaker 2: over this weekend, and I'll see you guys on Monday. Instead,
- 11:57Speaker 2: Samaral is already essentially telling his defense, Don't start reading
- 12:01Speaker 2: your own press clippings just yet because.
- 12:03Speaker 1: We aren't there. And he's right.
- 12:06Speaker 2: FAU quarterback Caden Veltkamp completed 34 passes for 276 yards.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Florida only sacked him twice, despite him dropping back more
- 12:15Speaker 2: than 50 times. FAU had multiple long drives. They went
- 12:19Speaker 2: 75 yards for a touchdown, then 78 yards for another touchdown. Later,
- 12:24Speaker 2: they went another 75 yards for a touchdown. There were
- 12:28Speaker 2: too many situations where Florida had a chance to end
- 12:30Speaker 2: a possession.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And they didn't. That's going to get you beat against
- 12:35Speaker 1: SEC teams.
- 12:36Speaker 2: So if you're asking me for my number one thing
- 12:39Speaker 2: I want cleaned up coming out of this game, it
- 12:41Speaker 2: is third down.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Defense, period.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I also want to see more out of the defensive line.
- 12:48Speaker 2: I felt like the secondary was solid. I did question
- 12:52Speaker 2: why they played so soft. They were playing about eight
- 12:54Speaker 2: yards back off the line and I don't know if
- 12:57Speaker 2: that scheme or what, but I would have preferred them
- 12:59Speaker 2: to play a little bit closer up. I thought the
- 13:01Speaker 2: linebackers are the strongest unit on the defense, but I
- 13:04Speaker 2: don't think that surprises anybody. but I need to see
- 13:07Speaker 2: more from the defensive line. We spent the whole summer
- 13:10Speaker 2: hearing about LJ McCray and the transformation that he has made.
- 13:13Speaker 2: We know that any team in the country tried to
- 13:16Speaker 2: open their checkbook for Jaden Woods that period.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Of time he was in the transfer portal.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I need to see guys like that really step up.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I need to see more. Let's talk about special teams.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Pretty darn uneventful, and I'm completely okay with that. Patrick
- 13:33Speaker 2: Durkin knocked through a 53-yard field goal. That is a
- 13:36Speaker 2: career long for Patrick Durkin, so congratulations there. Your first
- 13:40Speaker 2: field goal in the swamp with your new school, and
- 13:44Speaker 2: it's a personal best. I think that's incredibly impressive. His
- 13:47Speaker 2: kickoffs were also incredible. Florida had 10 touchbacks on 11 kickoffs,
- 13:52Speaker 2: and guys, I was in the end zone there. Those
- 13:54Speaker 2: are like out of the back of the end zone,
- 13:55Speaker 2: not barely making it there. He had strong kickoffs. If
- 13:59Speaker 2: I had a critique at all, he was kind of
- 14:01Speaker 2: right down the middle of the field. I'd maybe move
- 14:03Speaker 2: it a little bit to the hash because if you
- 14:05Speaker 2: don't get there, you're getting a return straight down the middle.
- 14:07Speaker 2: But that's being nitpicky by somebody who spends far too
- 14:10Speaker 2: much time watching special teams. There were no missed extra points,
- 14:14Speaker 2: no punt disasters because, again, Florida didn't punt. Sarmal did
- 14:18Speaker 2: point out one kickoff coverage play he wasn't happy with.
- 14:21Speaker 2: But overall, there wasn't a special teams catastrophe hiding somewhere
- 14:25Speaker 2: in a 45-point victory. And I will take that. I
- 14:30Speaker 2: also counted every single time, guys. We got the right
- 14:32Speaker 2: number of men on the field every single time. I
- 14:36Speaker 2: know Coach Jonathan Galante was juiced. I watched him some
- 14:39Speaker 2: on the sidelines. He is pumped about the energy of
- 14:42Speaker 2: this special teams. He brings a whole different attention to
- 14:46Speaker 2: detail and level of excitement that we have not had
- 14:49Speaker 2: in a long time on special teams. And I was
- 14:51Speaker 2: just very excited and proud for that unit. Now there
- 14:55Speaker 2: are two injury situations to watch. Eric Singleton had an
- 14:58Speaker 2: ankle issue very early in the game. If you watched,
- 15:01Speaker 2: he was blocking for VB3 on his touchdown, kind of
- 15:03Speaker 2: got rolled up on. Summerall said afterward, he tried to go,
- 15:06Speaker 2: but wasn't able to continue. And he expects to know
- 15:08Speaker 2: more about him Monday. I did see him on the
- 15:10Speaker 2: sidelines in his uniform the whole game. He was kind
- 15:13Speaker 2: of running back and forth on the sidelines trying to
- 15:15Speaker 2: get that ankle loose.
- 15:16Speaker 1: I feel like all of that's really good signs.
- 15:17Speaker 2: You know, if it's a catastrophic injury, you're in the
- 15:20Speaker 2: locker room getting checked out, and that's not where he was.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So hopefully we'll get some good news on Monday. And honestly,
- 15:26Speaker 2: they don't even need him for Campbell. So if given
- 15:29Speaker 2: the opportunity, maybe just rest him. And then Evan Pryor
- 15:33Speaker 2: was cleared to play, but his hip wasn't feeling right.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And ultimately, he didn't feel like he could go again.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Campbell is next, so Florida should not need to force
- 15:41Speaker 2: either player back before they're ready. And even if they
- 15:43Speaker 2: are ready, I don't even know that you need to
- 15:46Speaker 2: use them. I think the bigger concern is making sure
- 15:48Speaker 2: those guys are healthy when the schedule starts to ramp up.
- 15:52Speaker 2: But big picture, I don't want to overreact to beating FAU.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Florida was supposed to beat FAU. Florida was a huge favorite.
- 15:59Speaker 2: There are going to be much bigger tests. This game
- 16:02Speaker 2: does not tell us Florida is suddenly ready to win
- 16:05Speaker 2: the SEC. But I also don't believe in minimizing things
- 16:09Speaker 2: just because of the opponent. There were things we needed
- 16:11Speaker 2: to see on Saturday night. Could Florida look more organized?
- 16:15Speaker 2: And it is a resounding yes. Could Florida score more points?
- 16:20Speaker 2: Very much yes. Could Aaron Filo run this offense? He
- 16:24Speaker 2: certainly looked capable to me. Could Florida create explosive plays?
- 16:29Speaker 1: Absolutely. Could the offensive line open holes for Jaden Baugh?
- 16:32Speaker 1: 281 rushing yards says yes.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Could Florida play relatively clean football? Three penalties tells us yes.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Could Florida put an inferior team away instead of allowing
- 16:46Speaker 2: it to hang around for three quarters?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Florida led 17-0 after the first quarter, 38-14 at halftime,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and 52-21 after three, and then kept playing. The 66
- 17:00Speaker 2: points were Florida's most in a season opener since Steve
- 17:03Speaker 2: Spurrier's 1994 team scored 71.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Against New Mexico State. That's a pretty good way to
- 17:09Speaker 1: introduce yourself.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And I think maybe that's my biggest takeaway from game
- 17:13Speaker 2: one of the.
- 17:14Speaker 1: John Summerall era. There was energy. There was aggression. There
- 17:18Speaker 1: was explosiveness.
- 17:19Speaker 2: There was an expectation that Florida was going to dictate
- 17:22Speaker 2: what happened in that game. And even after winning by
- 17:25Speaker 2: 45 points, the head coach walked into the press conference,
- 17:29Speaker 2: ticked off about things his team didn't do well enough.
- 17:33Speaker 1: I can work with that.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Now the trick is doing it again. Florida gets Campbell
- 17:37Speaker 2: next week at 530 in the swamp. That's another game
- 17:40Speaker 2: that Florida should win comfortably. So I don't necessarily need
- 17:44Speaker 2: 66 points again. What I need to see is continued growth.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Can the defense get off the field on third down?
- 17:50Speaker 2: Can you generate more pressure? Can Aaron Philo continue to
- 17:53Speaker 2: take care of the football? Can you continue to create
- 17:56Speaker 2: explosive plays? Can you develop some more of those second
- 17:59Speaker 2: and third team guys? And most importantly, can Florida use
- 18:03Speaker 2: these first two games to become the team it needs
- 18:06Speaker 2: to be once the real tests arrive? We're going to
- 18:09Speaker 2: find out. But for one night, the swamp was packed.

- 18:17Speaker 2: in the stands. We had the correct entry on the
- 18:22Speaker 2: jumbotron when the team ran out. The offense was explosive.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Jaden Baugh looked ridiculous. Aaron Filo looked comfortable. And John
- 18:30Speaker 2: Summerall is 1-0 as the head coach of the Florida Gators.

- 18:43Speaker 2: Philo or Ba or BB3, the offensive line? And how
- 18:47Speaker 2: concerned are you about what we saw defensively on third down?
