- 0:07Speaker 1: It's a different worldview with Daryl and Kadeem.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I can't even say it without laughing. What the hell
- 0:13Speaker 2: have I gotten myself into? I don't know. I can't
- 0:17Speaker 2: believe here we are. We are doing this.
- 0:20Speaker 3: This is.
- 0:21Speaker 4: You talk enough, so this was a natural.
- 0:24Speaker 2: This was going to happen. This had to happen. This
- 0:26Speaker 2: had to happen. Had to happen.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I don't know if this is the best idea we've
- 0:32Speaker 1: ever had or the absolute worst idea we've ever had.
- 0:35Speaker 2: This is about to be a shit show. Welcome to
- 0:37Speaker 2: the shit show, folks.
- 0:38Speaker 1: This is the shit show live.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Best idea we've had or the worst idea we've had ever.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Shit show. Shit show. This is the shit show live.
- 0:48Speaker 1: So, look, we need to break all this down. It
- 0:51Speaker 1: is a different worldview with Daryl and Kniep. First, let's
- 0:54Speaker 1: start with that.
- 0:55Speaker 2: OK. I love that. I approve.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And, you know, this is so encapsulate not only what
- 1:01Speaker 1: we want from the podcast, but this is exactly the
- 1:05Speaker 1: way we talk about everything.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Little you and big me. Perfect. The only thing that
- 1:11Speaker 2: made a benefit was Kadeem and Daryl. But other than that,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm good. But it's not Kadeem and Daryl because it's
- 1:17Speaker 2: age before beauty. That's true. See? And most people don't
- 1:21Speaker 2: know that I'm older than you. Who don't know? Who
- 1:24Speaker 2: don't know?
- 1:25Speaker 1: Most people think I'm, because of my size, they think
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm younger brother or littler to you.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So they think younger and they don't know. I always thought,
- 1:35Speaker 2: at least from back in the day, they would have
- 1:37Speaker 2: thought you were a little old. Like, no, no, we
- 1:40Speaker 2: were freshmen together.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Yeah. They, they always, for some reason, well, not for
- 1:44Speaker 1: some reason, but for the, the ways in which Ron
- 1:48Speaker 1: was viewed as a sidekick.
- 1:50Speaker 2: So it's always younger.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Like Robin was younger than Batman or something like that,
- 1:55Speaker 1: that kind of, uh, um, But the other part is,
- 2:00Speaker 1: depending on who you ask, they either do look like
- 2:02Speaker 1: us or they don't.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Look like us.
- 2:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 2: And I like that, too. I was like, I don't
- 2:07Speaker 2: want it to be perfect. Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's a
- 2:09Speaker 2: little rendered. No, you don't need Michelangelo to do it.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm excited for this. And look, off the jump,
- 2:16Speaker 1: we want to thank Black Effect and Charlamagne Tha God.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We are thrilled to be part of the Black Effect
- 2:23Speaker 1: and Charlamagne Tha God and his entire team. They are
- 2:26Speaker 1: our partners in producing our podcast. So we want to
- 2:29Speaker 1: give you all a shout out.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And iHeart.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Those are our partners as well.
- 2:33Speaker 1: We are happy to be among the Black Effect and
- 2:36Speaker 1: iHeart family of podcasts wherever you get your podcasts.
- 2:40Speaker 2: We're doing that. And then we also want to thank
- 2:43Speaker 2: Howie Mandel. Hey.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Because Howie has allowed us space in his kingdom for
- 2:51Speaker 1: us to set up.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 2:53Speaker 1: The most gracious facility where we can call home and
- 2:56Speaker 1: be comfortable in our own studio.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Not too far from my house.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And the best part of today being day one is
- 3:04Speaker 1: literally this is day one.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I got nothing. I at least tried. Yeah, because Dean
- 3:09Speaker 2: brought something. I brought something.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I brought nothing because I need time to figure out
- 3:14Speaker 1: what I want.
- 3:15Speaker 4: And you got a lot going on in your brain
- 3:17Speaker 4: and you are going to carry this whole thing.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So, yeah, you don't need nothing distracting nobody from your brilliance.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Howie suggested I take off my shoes, and I thought, well,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm going to wear them. But the shoes are important
- 3:30Speaker 1: to that. For people who wouldn't think these matter, the
- 3:34Speaker 1: Jordans matter.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Because, again, we have to break down, which is what
- 3:39Speaker 1: I enjoy about being in the podcast space.
- 3:41Speaker 2: You don't have to have some format. We're just making
- 3:43Speaker 2: it up all along. Run your mouth.
- 3:47Speaker 1: The beginnings of this podcast go back to the beginning
- 3:50Speaker 1: of our relationship. So tell everybody how we met the
- 3:53Speaker 1: folks who don't know how we met.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Boy, back in 1987, we did a movie called School Days.
- 4:01Speaker 4: And somehow Spike would always set these lineups. Like police lineups.
- 4:10Speaker 2: You guys over here.
- 4:11Speaker 4: And you'd always be matched up and kind of staggered
- 4:14Speaker 4: and looking at each other. And somehow we always ended
- 4:18Speaker 4: up faced off against one another. And me being a
- 4:25Speaker 4: trained actor. And you're doing, oh, I'm just, this is
- 4:29Speaker 4: what happened, right?
- 4:30Speaker 2: This is real. We're going hard. Go ahead.
- 4:32Speaker 1: A trained actor. You get the first shot. So I
- 4:35Speaker 1: took the trained actor.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 4:37Speaker 4: And you being the dude that said, hey, Spike, on
- 4:40Speaker 4: the street, you saw him coming out of the bathroom
- 4:43Speaker 4: or something and said, hey, Spike, put.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Me in your movie. Coming out of the bathroom. Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I might have made that up. Yeah. You saw him
- 4:49Speaker 2: coming out of the bathroom. I'm just hanging out in
- 4:50Speaker 2: some bathroom.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Looking back at him at the movie theater and saying, hey, Spike,
- 4:52Speaker 4: put me in your movie.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Put me in a movie. Is there a toilet with
- 4:56Speaker 2: Spike Lee in there? I'm looking for. I want to
- 5:00Speaker 2: be in a movie. What? And somehow manifested that. Yes.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Into being in a movie. And a good role in
- 5:09Speaker 2: a movie.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Yes. Because you were one of the real Greeks, right?
- 5:14Speaker 4: The only one. No, that's your rusty condition. Right.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Yes. I figured it was one or two of you.
- 5:21Speaker 4: And so you were able to help a lot with
- 5:24Speaker 4: some stuff that needed to be.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Real thick. Yes, indeed. So when we'd face off against
- 5:29Speaker 2: each other, I was acting you under the table and
- 5:33Speaker 2: you were hiding.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Behind big brother x-ray visions mirrored shades because you couldn't
- 5:39Speaker 4: keep a straight face looking at me.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Now this would be. Well, you are funny looking. You
- 5:45Speaker 2: little bastard. Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Now, if someone could go and check the tape, you'll
- 5:50Speaker 4: find the scene that I'm talking about where we are
- 5:53Speaker 4: faced off.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And this poor guy is every time I look at.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Him, he got to hold his face down and turn
- 6:00Speaker 4: and not and not even try to embrace the heat
- 6:04Speaker 4: that I'm bringing to him.
- 6:06Speaker 2: So that's how we met. We became good friends.
- 6:09Speaker 1: He.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Is literally the reason I became a hardcore console gamer.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Because these guys would go out and party all night.
- 6:19Speaker 4: We was getting ready to go out and party. And
- 6:20Speaker 4: he told me, come on down to his room. And
- 6:22Speaker 4: he had Nintendo baseball. And he beat me like a
- 6:27Speaker 4: rug on this game.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Every day. Oh, my God. Every day.
- 6:31Speaker 4: And I stopped going to the parties. And I was like,
- 6:33Speaker 4: I'm going to stay in his room. And I am
- 6:35Speaker 4: going to ask for my key. Let me get your room.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:38Speaker 4: I'm going down there to master this game. And then
- 6:41Speaker 4: became went on and got my own. And so we
- 6:45Speaker 4: met in 87 on school days and been.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Running our mouths and been brothers ever since. That is
- 6:55Speaker 2: a wonderful story. And most of that's true. Oh, most
- 7:00Speaker 2: of it. Most of it's true. The bathroom part, maybe
- 7:02Speaker 2: he was... Most of that story's true. Maybe he had
- 7:05Speaker 2: a hot dog stand.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And the good thing about this is that it's all
- 7:10Speaker 1: being recorded.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So you can go back and rewind and we'll see
- 7:13Speaker 2: what happens.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Because I said to the man, Howard told.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Me to put up one of my shoes and I said,
- 7:18Speaker 2: the shoes are going to be important. So I said,
- 7:21Speaker 2: tell everybody how we met. We did not meet at
- 7:25Speaker 2: school days.
- 7:26Speaker 1: We met because when I met Spike on the street
- 7:32Speaker 1: and asked him for a role in the movie, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: had to audition. And when I was preparing myself to audition,
- 7:38Speaker 1: one of my dearest friends in life, Phil Durante, was
- 7:42Speaker 1: dating this young lady named Donna. And Donna said, oh,
- 7:47Speaker 1: you're going to audition for School Days? A friend of
- 7:50Speaker 1: mine named Kadeem Hardison is already in the movie. And
- 7:54Speaker 1: I was like, what do you mean already in the movie? Like,
- 7:56Speaker 1: I haven't even got a chance to audition. He's already
- 7:59Speaker 1: in the movie, but he's been talking about it this, that,
- 8:02Speaker 1: and the other thing. So Donna kept talking to me
- 8:05Speaker 1: about Kadeem Hardison. Yeah, okay, Kadeem Hardison.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Blah, blah, blah. So....
- 8:12Speaker 1: I get cast in the movie, and there's a whole
- 8:14Speaker 1: story with that, but I get cast in the movie.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And when we all get cast and Spike says, we're
- 8:21Speaker 1: going to go down to Atlanta next month, but come
- 8:24Speaker 1: to New York to the studio, we're going to record...
- 8:28Speaker 1: for The Butt, the song The Butt.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, okay, cool. And we all
- 8:33Speaker 2: go to this studio.
- 8:34Speaker 1: In New York.
- 8:34Speaker 2: For free, for free. For free. Yeah, Spike.
- 8:36Speaker 1: We all go to record. And I remember Eric Payne
- 8:40Speaker 1: was there. There were a couple of other folks. And
- 8:42Speaker 1: there was Kadeem Hartson. And it was the first time
- 8:45Speaker 1: I saw him and I was like, yo, Donna been
- 8:47Speaker 1: talking to me about you. I've been talking to her
- 8:51Speaker 1: about me or whatever, however that went down. And at
- 8:55Speaker 1: the time, these were the Jordans that were hot flaming
- 9:00Speaker 1: at the time. And I looked down and Kareem was
- 9:04Speaker 1: wearing the same Jordans.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But The proper way. Oh, gee.
- 9:09Speaker 4: With the white laces. If you know anything about anything. Yeah,
- 9:13Speaker 4: Mike Warren with black laces.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Come on, man.
- 9:16Speaker 4: You got to make that your own. You got to
- 9:19Speaker 4: grab that and put your style in it. So I
- 9:22Speaker 4: took the black laces and was like, that's not happening.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Boom. Threw the white laces in them. Crisp. And it
- 9:31Speaker 2: literally encapsulates our whole relationship. Yeah, exactly. We love the
- 9:34Speaker 2: same thing, but you'd be fucking it up.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:37Speaker 2: You take something perfectly fine and then do something silly.
- 9:40Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And take white laces. I was like, what is the
- 9:43Speaker 2: point of the white laces?
- 9:44Speaker 1: So we have argued like that about almost everything to
- 9:48Speaker 1: some degree. There are certain things for which we have
- 9:53Speaker 1: no daylight, you know, since we're talking about Jordan, greatest
- 9:56Speaker 1: basketball player all the time.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Michael Jordan. No problem. I mean, a hundred percent. We're
- 10:00Speaker 2: right there.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Um, but that's, that's how we met. And so, and
- 10:05Speaker 1: if you listen to the, but in the chorus, Oh, Leo, Oh,
- 10:10Speaker 1: that's all of us. This first time I've ever, it's
- 10:12Speaker 1: the only record I've ever been on. And it's still
- 10:15Speaker 1: the only singing I'm allowed to do in a loud
- 10:17Speaker 1: group of folks. Where you can basically go, oh, so
- 10:22Speaker 1: it sounds like I'm talking. Right.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Not really sing. Run your way through it.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yes.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Because don't get me started. Jasmine guy will tell you,
- 10:29Speaker 1: please don't let me sing. Find the key. For those
- 10:32Speaker 1: who will know.
- 10:32Speaker 2: My dear.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Frat brother, rest in peace, Irvin Allgood, who was the
- 10:40Speaker 1: head of the BCC choir, founding member at Syracuse.
- 10:43Speaker 2: And when we would sing our fraternity song, Irwin would
- 10:45Speaker 2: look at me and he's like, don't do that. Back out.
- 10:48Speaker 2: You're like, stop. Stop singing. No, absolutely. And I would
- 10:54Speaker 2: try to, and he was like, nah. So that's where
- 10:56Speaker 2: we met. Yeah. And immediately we connected.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And so when we got down to Atlanta, we're hanging
- 11:04Speaker 1: out all the time, which was the wild thing because
- 11:07Speaker 1: the Gammas and the.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Fellas were supposed to be at odds all the time.
- 11:12Speaker 2: But we were hanging out every day. All the time. Yeah,
- 11:13Speaker 2: we were hanging out every day. We were in the room.
- 11:15Speaker 2: I had a car. We were going everywhere together. New Yorkers,
- 11:19Speaker 2: we don't know nothing about that. He couldn't drive. We
- 11:21Speaker 2: were driving everywhere.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And the fun part about the Nintendo, because you only
- 11:27Speaker 1: remember baseball, but I had the other games too.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So I was playing....
- 11:31Speaker 1: It had the, I think it was Hooligans Alley, the
- 11:35Speaker 1: shooting game, and the Ducks.
- 11:38Speaker 2: So I would play all the other games.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You were just playing baseball every day. And it was
- 11:43Speaker 1: at least a month or two of just beating you,
- 11:45Speaker 1: like you said, like a rug before you knew that
- 11:47Speaker 1: you could put a curve on it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah, man. The little bastard wouldn't even tell me the basics.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Figure it out. I was like, how come I can't
- 11:57Speaker 2: figure it out? Figure it out. I don't know.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You just got to time it. I was striking out
- 12:03Speaker 1: all the time. And the slow ball. You can slow
- 12:08Speaker 1: it down. Like halfway, and it was slow. Oh, Nintendo
- 12:13Speaker 1: was great. So that's where our whole gaming thing started.
- 12:18Speaker 1: But the part that you say, which was....
- 12:21Speaker 2: About the trained actor part. Wait, wait. I'm not trained?
- 12:26Speaker 1: I am just saying that what differentiated us was not
- 12:29Speaker 1: the training. What differentiated us was... The ability to keep
- 12:34Speaker 1: it together in the scene. Every time I see you guys,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I start to laugh. The ability to keep it together
- 12:39Speaker 1: in the scene. Every time I look at him, I
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to laugh. So, Kadeem would be in Canton.
- 12:44Speaker 2: He turned on hard. I'm like... Like, you can't be laughing.
- 12:48Speaker 2: You can't be mad at me. I don't even believe you, right?
- 12:52Speaker 2: And he's just solid into it. And I'm thinking, oh, God,
- 12:55Speaker 2: we're on film. I can't do this. So, fortunately... When
- 13:00Speaker 2: you want to.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Talk about training, I went to immediately, like, you know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: they talk about Brando had all of his dialogue written everywhere.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I had x-ray vision sunglasses on. They were mirrored.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So I finally figured I'll just close my eyes. And
- 13:15Speaker 1: when I turn to look at him, I can be
- 13:17Speaker 1: as hard as I want because I can't see anything.
- 13:20Speaker 1: So if you look at all those scenes of us,
- 13:23Speaker 1: at the parade when we are lined up, I never
- 13:26Speaker 1: had to turn away from laughing because I was never
- 13:28Speaker 1: looking at you.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Like you staring with your eyes. I was staring with
- 13:31Speaker 2: my eyes closed. They were completely shut.
- 13:33Speaker 4: They would never train you to do that in any
- 13:36Speaker 4: acting class anywhere.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Fake it till you make it. I guess that is
- 13:40Speaker 2: a thing. No, it's not even fake it till you
- 13:41Speaker 2: make it.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It was, who was it just posted the thing about
- 13:45Speaker 1: Dustin Hoffman who taught him the greatest trick in acting.
- 13:50Speaker 1: He said in any drama when you're sitting there looking
- 13:52Speaker 1: at somebody, You go, did I take the laundry out?
- 13:56Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was Nathan Fillion. Nathan Fillion
- 13:59Speaker 2: was talking about Dustin Hoffman. Like, did I take the
- 14:01Speaker 2: laundry out? Yeah. Do you have my laundry? Maybe I
- 14:07Speaker 2: should get the laundry when I leave. That's all you
- 14:09Speaker 2: have to say to yourself. No, I did take the laundry. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 1: And it has nothing to do with what's going on,
- 14:16Speaker 1: but it'll give you the perfect response for what you're
- 14:18Speaker 1: looking for.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Uh, oh, and it was, I think I just saw
- 14:23Speaker 1: something from Gary Oldman too, uh, where he said it was.
- 14:26Speaker 2: All James Cagney. He said, if you're trying to look menacing,
- 14:29Speaker 2: he said, you lift the head.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Then the eyes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Um, so yeah, so that, that's how, um, that's
- 14:39Speaker 1: where our relationship started. When school days was done, that's
- 14:49Speaker 1: when I came to Los Angeles. Cause I'm, Didn't go
- 14:52Speaker 1: back to Syracuse for summer school. I came out to
- 14:54Speaker 1: LA for the summer. And then the traditional television cycle.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Pilot season? Pilot season. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Excuse me, in August when it was time for all
- 15:05Speaker 1: the new shows, that's when they started casting for a
- 15:10Speaker 1: different world.
- 15:10Speaker 2: And you were in New York.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I was in LA. We were both auditioning for Dwayne Wayne.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Most folks don't know that. And we kept getting callbacks
- 15:19Speaker 1: every day. I would say, I call you in New
- 15:23Speaker 1: York and say, I got a call back.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Me too. And I'm going to the producers. Me too.
- 15:28Speaker 2: They're taking me in to read for the network. They're
- 15:31Speaker 2: flying me out to L.A. Me too. And so we
- 15:34Speaker 2: did all that.
- 15:35Speaker 1: And so it was me, Kadeem, and like one other dude.
- 15:37Speaker 2: It's a shame that we can't remember who this other
- 15:39Speaker 2: guy was. He should let us know. Yeah, right. If
- 15:42Speaker 2: you're out there. And you auditioned for Dwayne Wayne. Tell us.
- 15:46Speaker 2: Don't be mad. And he probably like, why would I
- 15:49Speaker 2: tell you? Yeah, right.
- 15:50Speaker 1: That you beat me again. Years later that I didn't
- 15:53Speaker 1: get that job. So, you know, Kadeem went in to
- 15:59Speaker 1: the audition and all I heard was, ah! That's all
- 16:06Speaker 1: you can hear outside.
- 16:07Speaker 2: There's a killer on the loose.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 2: There's a killer among us. That's all I can hear.
- 16:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And up until that point, when I auditioned for School Days,
- 16:16Speaker 1: it was Spike Lee and Robert Reed.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Right.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Two people.
- 16:20Speaker 1: For A Different World, it was Eileen Knight and a couple,
- 16:24Speaker 1: maybe two other people, Matt. And when we went in
- 16:27Speaker 1: for the production, for the network at NBC. It was
- 16:29Speaker 1: like 40.
- 16:30Speaker 4: People in the room.
- 16:33Speaker 2: I was terrified. I walked in there. To this day,
- 16:36Speaker 2: I have no idea what I said.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Dustin Hoffman and his tricks couldn't help you. Nobody could
- 16:40Speaker 4: save you. I guess that's where the training part may
- 16:43Speaker 4: have come in. See what I'm trying to tell you?
- 16:45Speaker 4: See what I'm trying to tell you? I was not
- 16:48Speaker 4: trained for that day. But that was not the final.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I had to go back another day Really? And there
- 16:57Speaker 4: was nobody.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Because when I got.
- 16:59Speaker 4: There for what I thought was going to be okay,
- 17:02Speaker 4: it's down to me and maybe one other now, now
- 17:05Speaker 4: because I'm coming back.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 4: There was nobody there. And I walked in the reception
- 17:09Speaker 4: and I was looking and I was like, where's everybody else?
- 17:12Speaker 4: It was like, it's just you. I was like, oh shit,
- 17:15Speaker 4: it's in the bag. This is in the bag. And
- 17:18Speaker 4: I went in again, 40 people lined up around the room.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 17:22Speaker 4: And I was like, okay, I got to, I got
- 17:25Speaker 4: to try something. And I started on one side.
- 17:28Speaker 2: And I went, what's your name?
- 17:30Speaker 4: And this one told me their name and that one
- 17:32Speaker 4: told me their name and that one and that one
- 17:34Speaker 4: and that one and that one and that one.
- 17:35Speaker 2: And they got all the way around to the other end.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And then I went back within reverse.
- 17:39Speaker 4: And I said, thank you. So and so, so and so,
- 17:41Speaker 4: so and so, so and so. By the time I
- 17:43Speaker 4: got to the middle of the room, you could hear
- 17:45Speaker 4: them like, like at a game. And it was the
- 17:48Speaker 4: bottom of the night. And they was waiting for me
- 17:50Speaker 4: to hit this home run. And I got to the
- 17:51Speaker 4: last person, said their name, and they erupted in applause.
- 17:54Speaker 2: And I was like, thanks, guys. And turned the walk out.
- 17:57Speaker 2: It was like, wait, wait, you got to do the scene.
- 17:59Speaker 2: I was like, oh, the scene?
- 18:00Speaker 4: This is nothing. Boom, let's do this. I rocked it,
- 18:03Speaker 4: killed them. They told me before I got home.
- 18:05Speaker 2: That I had the gig. I had never heard that before. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 2: I went back in just me.
- 18:11Speaker 4: I was like, whiz because that's always been yeah a
- 18:15Speaker 4: b and c choices like i you know we like
- 18:18Speaker 4: c but we want to put them up yeah what's
- 18:21Speaker 4: happening and then it was just me it was like
- 18:24Speaker 4: you're the only one i was like oh this is
- 18:27Speaker 4: it's a wrap kids is that right yes sir i
- 18:30Speaker 4: never heard that.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Before today yeah yeah yeah and now you couldn't name
- 18:34Speaker 1: 10 people in a room.
- 18:37Speaker 2: A lot of white folks. It was nice white folks.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Now you're just guessing. Yeah, right. George, Becky, Elliot. Roll
- 18:45Speaker 2: with me, y'all.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Yeah. Just applaud when I get it wrong. If I
- 18:47Speaker 4: get it wrong, just at the end. Yeah, just come on.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Show me some love.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I'm trying. That part.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was just something to break the ice and, uh,
- 18:55Speaker 4: set the tone that we were going to have fun.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Even if I stumbled on that, but I could feel
- 19:01Speaker 4: him like all like rooting, like, oh my God, if
- 19:03Speaker 4: he does this, if he can pull this off.
- 19:06Speaker 2: And I was like, boom, bam. And it just all
- 19:08Speaker 2: started to happen.
- 19:09Speaker 4: I got to the last one and they just, the
- 19:12Speaker 4: applause as if I'd won the fight, hit the last shot.
- 19:15Speaker 2: The greatest trick. Yeah. You're David Blaine. Yeah, exactly. And
- 19:19Speaker 2: then I was like, all right, thanks. knowing that I
- 19:22Speaker 2: had to read the scene, but I was going to
- 19:23Speaker 2: pretend like, all right, I'm done. And it was like, wait, wait,
- 19:26Speaker 2: we got to do the scene. I was like, the scene? Oh, yeah.
- 19:29Speaker 2: I know the scene. And then did a little with
- 19:31Speaker 2: Dwayne Wayne. Did you have to do any chemistry reads
- 19:34Speaker 2: with Lisa? No. No. Nothing. Wow. Nothing. They was like,
- 19:39Speaker 2: he's the one. But you had history with the Cosby show, too. Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I did one episode, Gordon Gartrell episode, where....
- 19:50Speaker 4: Malcolm started out the day wanting a $ 35 shirt or
- 19:53Speaker 4: something like that. And Bill's big line, I think he
- 19:58Speaker 4: kind of improvised, like, no, the only person who should
- 20:00Speaker 4: have a $ 35 shirt is if he's on stage with
- 20:02Speaker 4: his four brothers. Shout out to Michael and Jackson. And
- 20:07Speaker 4: then Denise decided... you know, you give me 10 bucks,
- 20:10Speaker 4: I can go get the materials and make this for you.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Make it for you. And, um, and so he gave
- 20:14Speaker 2: it to her and she made the worst shirt.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Classic. Yeah. Um, but in the, and then I learned
- 20:21Speaker 2: a lot about.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Cuts because when I got there, the first day, the
- 20:29Speaker 4: first table read, I had three scenes and a bunch
- 20:33Speaker 4: of lines, me and Malcolm hanging and running and doing
- 20:36Speaker 4: and talking to girls and I, And the next day,
- 20:39Speaker 4: came back.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I had one scene. And then the next day. Mama,
- 20:45Speaker 2: I'm going to be on TV.
- 20:49Speaker 4: And then the next day, the third day, my one
- 20:51Speaker 4: scene had got cut to one line. I had one line. Hey,
- 20:58Speaker 4: would you make one for me? it built no it's
- 21:05Speaker 4: an original designer original we burned the thing and I
- 21:09Speaker 4: was like wow I thought it was I didn't think
- 21:12Speaker 4: it was something I was doing yeah but I just
- 21:14Speaker 4: thought man I'm killing them and they taking they trying
- 21:17Speaker 4: to keep me down and then next thing you know
- 21:21Speaker 4: we'll get to a different world and we start doing
- 21:22Speaker 4: that and I saw it happen all the time lines
- 21:25Speaker 4: get cut scenes get cut for time so I had
- 21:28Speaker 4: a better understanding of it but I was I was
- 21:30Speaker 4: burnt when they, I had three scenes, bro, on.
- 21:33Speaker 2: The Cosby show. Three scenes?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Three scenes that went to one scene, but at least
- 21:38Speaker 4: a couple of different lines that went to one line,
- 21:43Speaker 4: one sentence. Wow.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Hey, would you make one for me? And that was it.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Adam Sandler had more in his role. Exactly. Way more. Yeah.
- 21:56Speaker 2: His appearance was bigger than that. That was great.
- 21:58Speaker 4: But then, you know, everybody met the family and had
- 22:02Speaker 4: a good time with them. And the casting folks.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Because it was, wasn't it Barry Moss? Yeah. Yep.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Hughes Moss. Hughes Moss. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:13Speaker 4: I remember my audition. I went in there and I
- 22:15Speaker 4: was just a smart ass. And I took the train
- 22:18Speaker 4: all the way from Manhattan to get there. I go
- 22:20Speaker 4: in and I say, hello, Felicia.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Hello, Lisa. Hello, Malcolm. Hello. And then I get to
- 22:27Speaker 2: him and I go, Mr. Coosby. And everybody else laughed.
- 22:35Speaker 2: And he was kind of. And I was like, oh, shit.
- 22:40Speaker 2: So I did my part.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And he said, OK, you got the job.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And they were like, Bill, Bill. He's like, oh, sorry,
- 22:47Speaker 2: if you can say something to the guy outside to
- 22:49Speaker 2: make him mess up, then you get the job. So
- 22:53Speaker 2: I went out like, oh, snap, I killed. Got on
- 22:55Speaker 2: the train. By the time I got home, got the job.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 23:00Speaker 4: So, yeah, so he wasn't mad at me, but he
- 23:02Speaker 4: was playing like, don't you come in here, boy, and
- 23:04Speaker 4: be throwing no funny stuff.
- 23:06Speaker 2: But at the same time, I'm sure he appreciated the hoods.
- 23:10Speaker 4: He said, and I never forgot, he said, you have
- 23:15Speaker 4: in my audition, first audition, big audition for the Cosby show,
- 23:20Speaker 4: he said, you have impeccable timing.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Nigga, I just liked it. That's how I praise it.
- 23:27Speaker 1: That moment, that time, from him.
- 23:30Speaker 2: It is.
- 23:32Speaker 4: I floated all the way home. I got on the train.
- 23:36Speaker 4: By the time I got home, they called up and said,
- 23:38Speaker 4: you got it? I was like, And then they went
- 23:40Speaker 4: from three scenes to one scene to one line. And
- 23:45Speaker 4: I had to hit that one line with my impeccable
- 23:47Speaker 4: timing because that was all I had.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I'm just, I'm trying to think of, of, of like
- 23:52Speaker 1: what superhero movie or like horror movie when.
- 23:54Speaker 2: They just go for the heart.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And just rip it right out.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah. That's like some mortal combat. Yeah. Finish him. Yeah.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Finish him. A hundred percent.
- 24:06Speaker 4: 100% by, uh, one of the best, most, Fun days
- 24:11Speaker 4: in my career, like having him say, I mean, this
- 24:15Speaker 4: was Fat Albert.
- 24:17Speaker 2: People talk about when you get that moment where you
- 24:20Speaker 2: feel like I'm good enough. Yeah, yeah, yep.
- 24:23Speaker 4: And he completely validated everything I thought maybe for the last,
- 24:30Speaker 4: what I must have been 19 then. So for the
- 24:33Speaker 4: last 10 years, from the time I was 9 or
- 24:35Speaker 4: 10 years old, I was like, I want to be
- 24:36Speaker 4: on TV. I, oh, all right.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Well, that's going to lead us down to another, another storytelling,
- 24:44Speaker 1: but we'll come back to the time where you think
- 24:46Speaker 1: made it. But I'm, I'm going to put us, since
- 24:49Speaker 1: this is our first episode of our podcast, put it
- 24:52Speaker 1: in perspective. One, talking about why we're doing this. Well,
- 24:55Speaker 1: we've been talking about doing our own show for at least.
- 25:00Speaker 2: A different world.
- 25:02Speaker 1: It's been 39 years since it debuted. So it can't
- 25:05Speaker 1: be more than 39 years, right? So, but if we
- 25:09Speaker 1: go back to school days, We were making mixtapes together
- 25:13Speaker 1: at Run DMC, right? At the mall, yes. And we'd
- 25:17Speaker 1: go to Six Flags Magic Mountain.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Oh, right. And we'd record in the studio.
- 25:23Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And we started doing all the Run DMC stuff. So
- 25:27Speaker 2: we were coming back. Please don't pull up the tape
- 25:30Speaker 2: of any of this. No, no, no. No, I have.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Those are like, because they were in cassette tape.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Because you could pick the song in the karaoke that
- 25:38Speaker 1: you wanted to do.
- 25:40Speaker 6: And....
- 25:41Speaker 2: Of course, I was Daryl. Yes. And you were Joe. Yes.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Yes. No one was Jay because we were trying to rap.
- 25:51Speaker 1: We were doing it.
- 25:52Speaker 2: But there's a story of how all of that also
- 25:54Speaker 2: led to Ron Johnson too.
- 25:56Speaker 1: From the hat that I was wearing to try and
- 25:59Speaker 1: be Run DMC-ish, that ultimately led to my great-uncle, taking
- 26:06Speaker 1: you to the pork pie, Stetson pork pie. But, so, again,
- 26:10Speaker 1: in terms of our wanting to do something aside from
- 26:13Speaker 1: acting on screen together, it goes back to that. And then,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I mean, we've, for all the time that we, from
- 26:24Speaker 1: the time Debbie Allen came on board with A Different
- 26:28Speaker 1: World and Norm Nixon played for the Clippers.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 26:33Speaker 1: We've been going, you know, that led us to the Clippers,
- 26:35Speaker 1: which led us to get courtside seats. And everything about
- 26:38Speaker 1: sports for us started there. And our connection to not
- 26:45Speaker 1: only all of the stars in the NBA there, right?
- 26:48Speaker 1: But I also talk about where I started playing golf
- 26:50Speaker 1: from the Warren Moon Celebrity Golf and Tennis Tournament where
- 26:54Speaker 1: I met all the NFL players. So Ronnie Lott, Warren Moon,
- 27:00Speaker 1: Lawrence Taylor.
- 27:02Speaker 2: You got everybody in it, right?
- 27:05Speaker 1: So now we're friends with almost everybody in the NBA
- 27:09Speaker 1: and everyone's our age, right? All the folks playing in
- 27:13Speaker 1: the NFL, right? And, you know, we're hanging out with
- 27:16Speaker 1: Norms or with Debbie's house. You know, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar come
- 27:21Speaker 1: by the house. And I remember when.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Oh, what's my man for the Pistons? The center. Big man.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Oh, oh.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Weed smoker, my man. Oh, I feel bad because somebody's
- 27:35Speaker 2: going to tell me. Oh, my God. James... James.
- 27:39Speaker 4: With the mustache. Yes.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Not Douglas. Edward. James Edwards.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 27:44Speaker 2: I remember when James Edwards came through the door. I
- 27:46Speaker 2: was like.
- 27:47Speaker 3: You let a piston in a Laker house? I was like,
- 27:50Speaker 3: what's going on? And Norm was like, that's my dog.
- 27:55Speaker 3: So it was that sense of our scene.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I remember we were with MJ somewhere playing cards in a.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Hotel room and Vinnie Johnson walked in the door. I
- 28:04Speaker 2: was like, what is Vinnie Johnson coming in for? You
- 28:08Speaker 2: can't hang out together.
- 28:10Speaker 1: And from all of these kind of behind the scenes conversations,
- 28:14Speaker 1: We just knew we were better than everybody else talking
- 28:17Speaker 1: about sport.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:18Speaker 2: Except to every athlete who was like, y'all have no idea.
- 28:21Speaker 4: You don't know what you're talking about. I was like, yes,
- 28:24Speaker 4: I do. I could be the GM. Just give me
- 28:26Speaker 4: a shot. I want you to be the GM.
- 28:29Speaker 2: No one knows. So, okay.
- 28:32Speaker 1: During our entire clipper time, Donald Sterling used to sit
- 28:36Speaker 1: a couple of seats down in the front row.
- 28:38Speaker 2: And Donald Sterling would walk by us at every game.
- 28:41Speaker 2: Every game.
- 28:42Speaker 1: And I remember we were playing Seattle. And we were
- 28:46Speaker 1: talking to Sean Kemp. And Sean goes by and Donald
- 28:53Speaker 1: Sterling walked up and said, who the fuck are you?
- 28:57Speaker 1: And why does everybody come over and talk to you?
- 28:59Speaker 1: And we were like, uh, they're our friends, you know?
- 29:03Speaker 1: And it was no Google at the time. They Googled me.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You couldn't do none of that.
- 29:08Speaker 1: And, That started our conversation with Donald Sterling.
- 29:12Speaker 2: He would come and ask for our opinion after everything.
- 29:17Speaker 2: And we kept telling him, it was like, look, you
- 29:20Speaker 2: should fire Andy Rosen and hire us. It's like, we
- 29:25Speaker 2: could help you. Because look, we're in last place. Can't
- 29:28Speaker 2: get no worse. Can't get worse. And we're going to
- 29:30Speaker 2: be cheaper. And all the players love us. That's right.
- 29:34Speaker 2: They're all my friends. Yes. We pitched him that every week.
- 29:40Speaker 1: And every week he would bring us in the locker
- 29:42Speaker 1: room and take us back, you know, and hang out
- 29:45Speaker 1: with the players. And we never had any problem. Like
- 29:47Speaker 1: after every game, we parked in the players' lot. We
- 29:52Speaker 1: would roll up into where the players parked.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah. It probably can go inside. Security be like, let
- 29:56Speaker 2: them through. Let them through.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Everybody talks about Billy Crystal and Penny Marshall.
- 29:59Speaker 2: I'm like, we were there. Yeah, we were there. We
- 30:02Speaker 2: were there first. Yep. Frankie came after. Yes. Little Frankie.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Brian Robbins on the other end. Yep. But we were
- 30:08Speaker 2: there all this time.
- 30:09Speaker 1: So we had been talking about doing this show and
- 30:12Speaker 1: we even got receipts because when we, when I did the,
- 30:16Speaker 1: reality series, House Husbands of Hollywood. Not to be mistaken
- 30:20Speaker 1: with the real House Husbands of Hollywood, which was the
- 30:23Speaker 1: BET show. The House Husbands of Hollywood was the Fox
- 30:27Speaker 1: reality show. And on that show, we did a pilot.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Right. With Norm Nixon.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Talking sport. It is on camera.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Where we had Norm as our guest. That's right. And
- 30:39Speaker 2: that was in, I got to go to my notes, 2009. Wow.
- 30:45Speaker 1: 2009 when we shot that. And, you know, we had
- 30:49Speaker 1: still been talking about it. That was going to be
- 30:50Speaker 1: our little sizzle reel to say, this is why we
- 30:53Speaker 1: should have our own sports show.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Or GMO to Clippers. One or the other. Come on.
- 30:59Speaker 2: I'll take either one. Then Donald Stern's whole situation imploded.
- 31:03Speaker 1: And, you know, then Steve Ballmer bought tickets and then
- 31:07Speaker 1: tickets was a little more expensive.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Team was a little less good. But, you know, we're
- 31:11Speaker 2: going to come back to that. I'm going home. But then.
- 31:17Speaker 1: We made another sizzle reel for this. And by the way,
- 31:20Speaker 1: that show, The House Husbands of Hollywood, was produced by
- 31:24Speaker 1: Marilyn Wilson. And then we shot a sizzle reel that
- 31:27Speaker 1: Marilyn was helping us with and her husband Scooter. And
- 31:30Speaker 1: we shot the sizzle reel, thought we could sell the
- 31:32Speaker 1: podcast then.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Then it didn't work. And that was at least... Ten
- 31:38Speaker 2: years ago? Ten years ago? Something like that? Had to be, yeah.
- 31:41Speaker 1: And we probably could have been better at trying to,
- 31:43Speaker 1: but now everybody and their mother got a podcast.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 31:46Speaker 1: So now folks are like, well, I guess y'all jumping
- 31:48Speaker 1: on the bandwagon. We've been talking about this for... Before
- 31:51Speaker 1: podcasts was even a podcast. We thought we could get
- 31:54Speaker 1: a radio show.
- 31:55Speaker 4: Right.
- 31:58Speaker 2: Oh, lass. A radio show. Good evening, folks. We are
- 32:04Speaker 2: coming to you live. Look here, Skip. What do you
- 32:08Speaker 2: think about that clipper?
- 32:09Speaker 1: I mentioned in the beginning with the Padres 3 and
- 32:12Speaker 1: the Mets 4.
- 32:14Speaker 2: We thought we could do that.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Oh, my God. So this is the manifestation of years
- 32:21Speaker 1: of wanting to do this. So aside from you and I,
- 32:30Speaker 1: Explain it how we started and we will talk about
- 32:33Speaker 1: all the things we're interested in because we got so
- 32:36Speaker 1: many things that we disagree about.
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Just because if.
- 32:41Speaker 1: There were a way to describe the worldview, he thinks
- 32:45Speaker 1: I'm management and he's the players.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely. That describes what you think. Yeah. So in baseball,
- 32:53Speaker 2: I'm saying we need a salary cap and you're saying no.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Are you out of your... Yeah. Salary cap you... Yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 2: how about that? But look, at the same time, you know,
- 33:04Speaker 2: they're talking about the Dodgers are unbeatable.
- 33:06Speaker 1: And yet, is it Pittsburgh this year made it to
- 33:10Speaker 1: the playoffs with the smallest payroll?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Pirates don't make it. No, I don't think the Pirates
- 33:14Speaker 2: made it to the playoffs this year. Which team has,
- 33:17Speaker 2: it's not San Diego. No, it's not San Diego or Philly.
- 33:20Speaker 2: And not Atlanta. Or Atlanta. Maybe Milwaukee. Milwaukee. They probably Milwaukee.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Milwaukee probably.
- 33:26Speaker 4: They feel like a farm team. They just give away
- 33:28Speaker 4: the good players. But that's the debate.
- 33:31Speaker 1: And oddly enough, while we would debate that about MLB,
- 33:37Speaker 1: This NIL argument is absurd that we're trying to cap
- 33:41Speaker 1: the players. It's just, there's no cap on coaches and
- 33:45Speaker 1: they keep.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Trying to cap the kids. Yeah.
- 33:49Speaker 1: The guys out there, all the kids out there making
- 33:52Speaker 1: the sports, they need to be capped. And it could
- 33:56Speaker 1: be over for them the next play.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Tomorrow. Not for the coach. I ain't never seen a
- 34:02Speaker 2: coach taken out on a stretcher. They could be about
- 34:03Speaker 2: to leave right now.
- 34:04Speaker 4: Never seen one taken out on a stretcher or a
- 34:06Speaker 4: gurney or need to go into concussion protocol.
- 34:10Speaker 5: Nope.
- 34:10Speaker 2: No Achilles tears. Nope. No dislocated kneecaps.
- 34:14Speaker 4: No.
- 34:15Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, when they get fired, they
- 34:16Speaker 1: talk about where can I get hired next.
- 34:18Speaker 2: They're upwardly mobile. They keep going up.
- 34:21Speaker 1: They fail upward.
- 34:21Speaker 2: They fail upward. That is correct. That is a thing. So, yeah. Again,
- 34:27Speaker 2: while we disagree and agree on things like that.
- 34:30Speaker 1: But in addition to do that, one of the things
- 34:33Speaker 1: that we are so happy to be partners with, Black
- 34:37Speaker 1: Effect and High Heart, also on A Different Worldview, that
- 34:41Speaker 1: we're going to re-watch every episode of A Different World.
- 34:45Speaker 2: 144 episodes. We're going to re-watch every... All of them.
- 34:50Speaker 2: Shit show, y'all. I don't know what that's going to
- 34:52Speaker 2: be like. Shit show live. I have no idea. Aye, aye, aye.
- 34:56Speaker 2: And the timing of this, because, you know, we should
- 34:58Speaker 2: be launching. And by now. It's news. It's official. It's
- 35:06Speaker 2: way out. That A Different World has been renewed by Netflix.
- 35:10Speaker 2: The sequel. The sequel.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yep.
- 35:12Speaker 2: For season two. Congratulations. Congratulations. You were very good. So
- 35:19Speaker 2: were you. Hold on. You were very good in the sequel.
- 35:24Speaker 2: No notes.
- 35:26Speaker 4: I believed every word you said. Now, when we watch
- 35:28Speaker 4: this old stuff, I'm not going to be able to.
- 35:33Speaker 4: say the same things, but you have.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Wait, wait. I'm sorry. Gotta fix the camera. My guts
- 35:40Speaker 2: are all on the floor. I didn't... All of a sudden,
- 35:43Speaker 2: he went click, click, click, click. That might have come
- 35:46Speaker 2: off a little. Choo, choo, choo. Not the way I intended.
- 35:49Speaker 2: I had no idea. And I just looked up. But
- 35:52Speaker 2: I meant it sincerely. All my insides were on the floor.
- 35:55Speaker 2: So good. So good.
- 35:57Speaker 4: So good in the scenes with your son handling all
- 36:00Speaker 4: of it. I saw so many.
- 36:02Speaker 2: And you know... I'm your biggest critic. Biggest fan. And
- 36:06Speaker 2: biggest fan. Biggest fan, yes.
- 36:07Speaker 4: So when I can say honestly that I was impressed,
- 36:13Speaker 4: not just like, oh, yeah, he did good.
- 36:15Speaker 2: No, I was impressed. Wow, look at that. And the
- 36:17Speaker 2: only thing that's missing is the scenes with me and you. Yeah.
- 36:22Speaker 2: But I'll get you next season.
- 36:24Speaker 1: And I don't know, you know, so it's not a
- 36:26Speaker 1: spoiler because we'll, all of us, Anyone who works in
- 36:33Speaker 1: film and television, you live and die with the things
- 36:37Speaker 1: that get cut. Things that end up on the editing floor. Famously,
- 36:40Speaker 1: Kevin Costner in The Big Jim. So there's a lot
- 36:44Speaker 1: between you and I that didn't make it into the
- 36:46Speaker 1: first season of the sequel. So we'll see what happens
- 36:51Speaker 1: in season two. I've seen a lot of reactions that
- 36:53Speaker 1: say we needed to see more of Ron and Dwayne.
- 36:57Speaker 1: We'll hopefully get that. There's plenty of us.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Here. Well, yeah, folks are going to get more than
- 37:04Speaker 2: enough of us here. A lot of that.
- 37:06Speaker 1: But by the way, if we're going to sit here
- 37:09Speaker 1: and be complimentary and cutthroat at the same.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Time, I'd just like to say that I think that
- 37:14Speaker 2: you're terrific in this question. He's, he's full of shit.
- 37:24Speaker 2: He's coming. I got to find armor. Where's my armor?
- 37:30Speaker 1: He's bracing himself. You're good in sequel, but I have
- 37:35Speaker 1: told you, and I think it is still true. I'd
- 37:38Speaker 1: have to go back with some perspective that my favorite
- 37:43Speaker 1: performance of yours is from, um, uh, Why can't I
- 37:51Speaker 1: say the name of it?
- 37:53Speaker 2: It's where you played the voodoo-like ghost. Ah, The Crow.
- 38:01Speaker 2: The Crow, yes. It's called Cowboy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Phenomenal. My favorite performance of yours when I watched.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Just terrific. I've done a lot since then. I know
- 38:12Speaker 2: you have. You have. No, wait a minute.
- 38:17Speaker 1: That's like saying because I love Marlon Brando in The Godfather.
- 38:21Speaker 2: He's done a lot since then, but shit, that was
- 38:24Speaker 2: The Godfather. You know what I mean? So that is... Phenomenal.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Just role, performance. Now, I was going to say Death
- 38:31Speaker 2: by Temptation. We can look at that. Oh, boy. That
- 38:34Speaker 2: was the beginning.
- 38:35Speaker 1: We can look at Death by Temptation and compare that
- 38:38Speaker 1: with the sequel since we're pulling out the first season.
- 38:41Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, we're going to look at
- 38:43Speaker 2: your first season. Yeah, that's going to be fun, too.
- 38:46Speaker 2: That's really a bad idea. That's a bad idea. We're
- 38:49Speaker 2: going to do that, and we're going to see how
- 38:51Speaker 2: that works. Sit show live.
- 38:53Speaker 1: But that's going to be the fun of it because
- 38:55Speaker 1: just like it sends me that I had never heard
- 38:59Speaker 1: about the you going back by yourself.
- 39:02Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. It's staggering when we get all of us together.
- 39:07Speaker 1: And they're just stories that we're always surprised. But I
- 39:10Speaker 1: never knew that everyone drops another dime about things I
- 39:14Speaker 1: didn't know. So not only are we going to watch
- 39:18Speaker 1: all 144 episodes, But also, we're gonna bring along as
- 39:22Speaker 1: many guests from all 144 episodes to sit here.
- 39:26Speaker 2: And watch with us. Enough pain to go around.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 39:29Speaker 2: So, you know, I'm hoping we get all of the
- 39:32Speaker 2: Wayans that were alive at the time. Absolutely.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Because their family now has expanded. Their family empire, right,
- 39:40Speaker 1: of performers, many of whom weren't alive to be in
- 39:43Speaker 1: this show.
- 39:43Speaker 2: Right. have gone on to have amazing careers.
- 39:51Speaker 1: And so many of our friends, I already know I
- 39:55Speaker 1: can't wait for Eric or Sal.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Oh, boy. Wren Brown. Damon Wayne.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, I can't wait for all of them
- 40:03Speaker 1: to hopefully get here.
- 40:04Speaker 2: And then we'll bring in other folks.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Just that we want for whatever's happening so we can
- 40:11Speaker 1: talk about it because we're making all this happen because clearly,
- 40:13Speaker 1: This shows you how much we started at.
- 40:16Speaker 2: The very beginning. At least you have something. Yeah, I
- 40:20Speaker 2: did want some things. I... Fill up some space. I
- 40:24Speaker 2: want folks to know this is.
- 40:25Speaker 1: But part of what's supposed to be organic about podcasts
- 40:29Speaker 1: is not all supposed to be plain.
- 40:30Speaker 2: No. Supposed to be rough and rugged.
- 40:32Speaker 5: Yep.
- 40:32Speaker 2: And we just started and today is day one and...
- 40:35Speaker 2: Here we go with day one. Okay. Are we watching old?
- 40:39Speaker 1: We should probably look at, because that's a lot of
- 40:42Speaker 1: setup for day one.
- 40:43Speaker 2: We can get into all the other stuff at a
- 40:45Speaker 2: later time. Yeah, I can say I'm a little nervous.
- 40:51Speaker 2: You are?
- 40:51Speaker 4: Yeah. Why? I don't watch me on TV. Well, you're
- 40:57Speaker 4: about to watch a lot of you, homie. That's why
- 41:00Speaker 4: I said, what the fuck did I get myself into?
- 41:02Speaker 5: You're about to watch 144 episodes of you. This is
- 41:05Speaker 5: another fine mess you've gotten me into. Like, why am
- 41:09Speaker 5: I going to? But as much as I enjoy.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Yeah. Another difference between us, I enjoy all performances. Yeah.
- 41:21Speaker 4: But I can be really critical of my own. I'm
- 41:23Speaker 4: not going to criticize anybody on this one or that one.
- 41:28Speaker 4: I'm going to take that with love. But you get
- 41:31Speaker 4: me in a room with me and I'd be like,
- 41:33Speaker 4: what the hell was I doing?
- 41:34Speaker 1: What's so interesting about that is because that is also
- 41:38Speaker 1: the difference between the two of us.
- 41:40Speaker 2: We can watch any movie or film and I'll be like,
- 41:43Speaker 2: that's just bullshit. This was garbage.
- 41:46Speaker 1: I couldn't stand it. Like this latest Superman movie was
- 41:49Speaker 1: the worst.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 41:50Speaker 1: That damn dog. I couldn't stand that Superman. Superman got
- 41:55Speaker 1: his ass whooped all the time. It was just ridiculous.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I was just sick and tired of that movie. Horrible movie.
- 42:02Speaker 2: I loved it. Oh, my gosh. I had such a
- 42:04Speaker 2: good time. I went in there. It was like five
- 42:06Speaker 2: people in there. It was the end of its run.
- 42:08Speaker 2: That's why. And I sat there. That's why there were
- 42:11Speaker 2: five people in there. And we all had a time.
- 42:13Speaker 2: And at the end, it was like, was that really
- 42:15Speaker 2: that bad?
- 42:16Speaker 4: Yes.
- 42:16Speaker 2: No.
- 42:17Speaker 4: The people in the theater with me were.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Like, no, I thought that was a fluke. The five
- 42:20Speaker 2: people in the theater with me. Hey, it was the
- 42:22Speaker 2: end of the run. It was the end of the run.
- 42:25Speaker 2: The end of the run was three days after it started. No,
- 42:27Speaker 2: it stopped. You see? Come on. See what the corporate
- 42:30Speaker 2: guy do? Watch out, kids.
- 42:31Speaker 1: But the point is, you will always look for some
- 42:34Speaker 1: saving grace.
- 42:35Speaker 2: I'll find something.
- 42:36Speaker 1: And you're like, well, no, that was actually all right.
- 42:37Speaker 1: You are always generous to artists in that way.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Absolutely. I am hyper-opinionated about things. Training. No training. You
- 42:44Speaker 2: didn't train. If you would have trained.
- 42:46Speaker 1: My trained eye is what I have. And to see
- 42:49Speaker 1: through the nonsense.
- 42:50Speaker 4: If you'd have spent just nine months in a class
- 42:53Speaker 4: with some, and you would have been like, I'm afraid
- 42:56Speaker 4: I'm going to take it easy.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I've spent more time in a class than you, sir.
- 42:58Speaker 1: This is true. Let's just be clear there. And it
- 43:02Speaker 1: showed in the sequel.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Ah, well, look.
- 43:04Speaker 4: It really showed up in the sequel.
- 43:06Speaker 1: But that's also what's interesting is that I can watch
- 43:09Speaker 1: myself all the time.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Because I, like you, I am critical of my performances,
- 43:15Speaker 1: but I always learn from. So I'm like, oh yeah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: that wasn't what you wanted. Like, no, that wasn't bad.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Or I wish I could do that. And with a
- 43:22Speaker 1: different world, particularly when I watch it, I know I
- 43:27Speaker 1: was playing big for the joke and I had the freedom.
- 43:31Speaker 2: To do that. Ron did a lot of, Hijinx. Was
- 43:36Speaker 2: she naked? Yeah, yeah. The best. Classic. The best. And
- 43:40Speaker 2: by the way, that was an ad lib. Was she naked?
- 43:44Speaker 1: And in the sequel, and it's too early for spoilers,
- 43:47Speaker 1: it's been out for a while, but some of my
- 43:50Speaker 1: favorite lines in the sequel are all ad lib. And
- 43:53Speaker 1: the fact that producers kept it. And they thought, right
- 43:56Speaker 1: on point. And Uh, and I, I really appreciated it.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Button man. That's what y'all used to call me. Button man.
- 44:06Speaker 1: And I was trying to put a button on, on
- 44:07Speaker 1: a lot of things.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Run him out there. He'll do something. He'll do something.
- 44:11Speaker 1: We'll find a few that work or no, but it'd
- 44:14Speaker 1: be something different every time.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Um, you come a long way, son. Uh, well, well, well, gee,
- 44:20Speaker 2: thank you. Thank you so much. You've awfully kind. Yes.
- 44:24Speaker 1: Uh, so we should probably get ready. We're going to look,
- 44:27Speaker 1: we're going to start with season one. Episode one. And
- 44:32Speaker 1: in this first season, when we get ready to watch,
- 44:38Speaker 1: our titles are always a subject of conversation. Yeah.
- 44:42Speaker 2: They have been.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Recreated by HBCUs, birthday parties for decades of whichever one
- 44:50Speaker 1: you want. And certainly the ones that Debbie shot with the... Yeah,
- 44:54Speaker 1: once we got Debbie and Patty's... Aretha. Aretha's version and
- 44:59Speaker 1: Boyz II Men's version. Yeah, it just became an event.
- 45:02Speaker 4: A thing.
- 45:03Speaker 2: What are they going to look like?
- 45:05Speaker 1: And one of the things that from season one to
- 45:08Speaker 1: season two, everyone thought we would be like the Cosby
- 45:11Speaker 1: show and change them every year.
- 45:13Speaker 2: And we didn't. We only changed them twice. Well, technically
- 45:17Speaker 2: three times.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 45:18Speaker 2: From the first to the second. From the first So
- 45:20Speaker 2: the second one she did, and then the third one
- 45:23Speaker 2: that I think went for the end. And third one,
- 45:26Speaker 2: we had producers in there and other folks.
- 45:30Speaker 1: Everybody got to be a part of that. The Phoebe
- 45:35Speaker 1: Snow version and the credits from the first season, I
- 45:39Speaker 1: still think are phenomenal.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Absolutely. The colors.
- 45:43Speaker 4: It was, it was, I think these guys were, I
- 45:46Speaker 4: think may have been known for either video or music
- 45:48Speaker 4: videos or commercials.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:50Speaker 4: And it was a team, a two, a two man team.
- 45:54Speaker 4: And they came on and we went out on a
- 45:56Speaker 4: Saturday and Sunday and went to a couple of locations
- 45:58Speaker 4: and neighborhoods and they got an old truck and put
- 46:01Speaker 4: a piano on it and just did all these kinds
- 46:03Speaker 4: of things. And, Had us doing crazy, like, okay, now
- 46:05Speaker 4: you're going to wash the car. Okay, now you're going
- 46:08Speaker 4: to slide off the car and we're going to throw
- 46:09Speaker 4: water on you. Now we're going to have a water fight. Like,
- 46:11Speaker 4: just all kind of wild stuff that kids do. And
- 46:15Speaker 4: they captured it beautifully. I thought it was some of
- 46:19Speaker 4: my favorites to look at. And then Lenny pops up
- 46:21Speaker 4: in the end credits.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Is that right? Yeah, you know. Not the opening credits.
- 46:27Speaker 2: The end credits? But at the end credits.
- 46:29Speaker 1: No.
- 46:29Speaker 2: You see Lenny in the background. Stop it. He's playing
- 46:32Speaker 2: Freedom Train.
- 46:33Speaker 4: He was playing a demo of Freedom Train. And he
- 46:38Speaker 4: was bopping in the back. And we was all, it
- 46:40Speaker 4: was slow motion. It was all slow motion.
- 46:43Speaker 2: And we was grooving.
- 46:43Speaker 4: At least Lil' Coy was sitting up there. I was there.
- 46:47Speaker 4: And we was just grooving to Freedom Train. And then
- 46:49Speaker 4: you see him with the red hair and pulled to
- 46:54Speaker 4: a little teeny ponytail.
- 46:55Speaker 2: And he was bopping. He had his... radio and he
- 46:59Speaker 2: just was bopping in the background.
- 47:00Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:01Speaker 2: I am today. Years old.
- 47:02Speaker 4: Really?
- 47:03Speaker 2: I am today. Years old to know that. Yeah. Yeah, man. Yeah.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I can't wait to look at the credits. Yeah.
- 47:09Speaker 1: Cause I'm thinking I have so much of us on
- 47:12Speaker 1: film from our first season. Um, Cause I, I recorded
- 47:17Speaker 1: not only school days, cause I had a camera back
- 47:20Speaker 1: then in 1987.
- 47:22Speaker 2: And it was so rare. People used to say, does
- 47:24Speaker 2: that have audio?
- 47:24Speaker 1: Like, yeah, that's how rare it was to have a camera.
- 47:28Speaker 1: But so I have video of all of us from
- 47:30Speaker 1: that first season, which is so special. Um, so I,
- 47:36Speaker 1: Lenny's around of course. And as with Marissa and Dawn and, uh, we,
- 47:42Speaker 1: we say Lilacoy.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Most folks don't know her. Um, But, yeah, so we
- 47:48Speaker 2: need to jump in. Yeah, okay. And I love me
- 47:52Speaker 2: some Phoebe Snow, rest in peace. Yeah, absolutely. She was... Yeah.
- 47:57Speaker 2: And it was funky and all that and... Folky and just,
- 48:00Speaker 2: it felt good.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and so everyone thought, like, the Cosby show that changed...
- 48:06Speaker 1: their credits every season. They thought we were going to
- 48:09Speaker 1: do that every season. They'd be like, honey, why?
- 48:11Speaker 2: Yeah. They're fine. Child, leave them alone. Yeah, right.
- 48:15Speaker 1: But again, we're not going to go down this because
- 48:18Speaker 1: we're still in the first season. So I'll wait till
- 48:21Speaker 1: we get to the second season. So in addition to
- 48:24Speaker 1: us talking about whatever we want, we're going to rewatch
- 48:27Speaker 1: all 144 episodes.
- 48:30Speaker 2: It sounds like a horrible idea.
- 48:32Speaker 1: But that's going to be great. The problem is we
- 48:35Speaker 1: don't talk so long. We ain't got no time to
- 48:38Speaker 1: look at it. What do you mean we?
- 48:39Speaker 2: What do you mean we? What do you mean we?
- 48:42Speaker 2: This is what you do. No, me, Mr. Count, every
- 48:45Speaker 2: name in the back row.
- 48:46Speaker 4: I'm just trying to give us some content and some
- 48:49Speaker 4: kind of contextualization of what really.
- 48:52Speaker 2: Happened at the thing.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Gone man this is why we're in trouble we're in
- 49:02Speaker 6: so much trouble for doing this show live uh so we're.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Actually gonna have to look at the first episode in
- 49:08Speaker 1: the next episode yeah come on back come on this
- 49:12Speaker 1: gives it this is like a big teaser yeah this
- 49:14Speaker 1: is just this is just the appetizer yeah so this
- 49:17Speaker 1: is the teaser We'll come back and actually do what we're.
- 49:21Speaker 2: Supposed to do. You're at 52 minutes, guys.
- 49:23Speaker 1: How about you watch an episode? That's what you're supposed
- 49:27Speaker 1: to do. So we're going to do that.
- 49:29Speaker 2: It's good to talk to you, though. What the hell?
- 49:32Speaker 2: And for everybody that's tuning in, thank you. We, you know. Share, like, post, recast,
