Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's Keiv.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I am the singer and guitarists and cry Wolf and
- 0:05Speaker 2: we've also got Josh on guitar and he does backing
- 0:08Speaker 2: vocals as well, and then we've got Nick on bass
- 0:11Speaker 2: and James on the drums. So this single, Burn is
- 0:15Speaker 2: our second single. We released our debut single a couple
- 0:18Speaker 2: of months ago and had a pretty good response with that,
- 0:22Speaker 2: so we're super excited to get this one out. It's
- 0:25Speaker 2: pretty much just talking about getting rid of the old
- 0:29Speaker 2: and starting something new, seeing how it goes, hoping for the.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Best fantasy indible. That sort of fits in with the
- 0:36Speaker 3: whole theme, doesn't it. Thanks for joining to Snake, keV.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, thanks for having me my pleasure.
- 0:41Speaker 3: So, as you say, croy Wall released your second single,
- 0:43Speaker 3: Burn on October at thirteen. So how do you feel
- 0:46Speaker 3: about it, mate, You're relieved, You're excited, You're nervous.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Yeah, always exciting to release new music.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's always a pretty long time between when
- 0:56Speaker 2: you write the song and then you actually release it,
- 0:58Speaker 2: so it's always good to get it out in the
- 1:01Speaker 2: world and kind of get people's opinion on it and
- 1:04Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So what people think about it?
- 1:06Speaker 3: But people say that until they do get people's opinion
- 1:08Speaker 3: on it, and then they say, shit, I wish I
- 1:10Speaker 3: had an HD.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Fingers crossed, not too much of that.
- 1:15Speaker 3: So can you tell us a bit more about the
- 1:17Speaker 3: song from a musical point of view than what you're
- 1:19Speaker 3: going for.
- 1:19Speaker 2: With it, going for something like pretty heavy but still accessible.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I tend to write songs that are relatively simple. We
- 1:31Speaker 2: don't want to make it too difficult for ourselves to
- 1:33Speaker 2: play it and stuff like that, so try to try
- 1:36Speaker 2: to keep it, keep it simple, but keep it catchy
- 1:38Speaker 2: as well and nice and heavy, but still retaining that
- 1:43Speaker 2: melodic kind of element that's kind of kind of what
- 1:45Speaker 2: we go for.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, cool. It's a really cool song, mate, Like
- 1:50Speaker 3: we were talking about this earlier. But it starts with
- 1:52Speaker 3: a soft, almost dreamy sort of intro. Then there's a
- 1:55Speaker 3: brief pause and then all payout brains. While I was
- 1:58Speaker 3: a thought process find that, I got to admit, you
- 2:00Speaker 3: trick me.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, just like to lull people into a false sense
- 2:05Speaker 2: of security. And it's always good. Maybe that I'll turn
- 2:08Speaker 2: it up a little bit at the start and then
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'll just get absolutely blasted when it hits.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's always a bit of fun.
- 2:13Speaker 2: But yeah, I definitely like playing around with the kind
- 2:16Speaker 2: of light and shade sort of stuff, like add some
- 2:19Speaker 2: dynamics in there.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I think it keeps it keeps it interesting. It will
- 2:23Speaker 1: be trip.
- 2:24Speaker 3: What's the actual process like coming up with that for
- 2:26Speaker 3: a song? Like I said, we just listened to that
- 2:28Speaker 3: and go, that's pretty cool. But you must go through
- 2:30Speaker 3: a few different different sounds and different things that you
- 2:33Speaker 3: try to see which one actually works.
- 2:35Speaker 1: How hard is it fun the right one? Yeah, it's
- 2:39Speaker 1: it's different every time.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like sometimes a song will just completely fall into place
- 2:43Speaker 2: without too much effort, and then other times you kind
- 2:45Speaker 2: of have to work it a little bit more. But
- 2:47Speaker 2: generally ILL start off with the main riff. So when
- 2:51Speaker 2: that first riff tacks in, that was the first rift
- 2:54Speaker 2: that I started off, and then kind of just build
- 2:57Speaker 2: it around that. So yeah, I wanted to have some
- 3:01Speaker 2: kind of quieter intro, so yeah, I worked on that
- 3:06Speaker 2: after coming up with the main riff, and then yeah,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and then just like trying trying different stuff for the verse.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I actually tried a whole lot of different ideas for
- 3:17Speaker 2: the verse, like overly complicated it massively, and the end
- 3:21Speaker 2: just just stripped it back and had it a lot
- 3:24Speaker 2: more simple, and I think it worked out pretty well.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Sometimes simple is best say, especially when it comes to music. Yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 3: you toughed on this before, but it's pretty deep lyrically
- 3:35Speaker 3: about shedding the past and embracing the unknown. But you
- 3:38Speaker 3: elaborate on little bit more for us. Is it anything specific?
- 3:42Speaker 1: It kind of is. Yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So I was in a band previously called Swerve City,
- 3:46Speaker 2: so it's a little bit of a tongue and cheap
- 3:50Speaker 2: reference to the city.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So it's talking about burning the city down stuff like that.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So it's basically just about how that band finished up,
- 3:59Speaker 2: and yeah, starting something new from the from the ashes
- 4:04Speaker 2: of that basically. And then yeah, it's like basically talking
- 4:08Speaker 2: about aiming, aiming high, aim for the sun. But you
- 4:13Speaker 2: never know what's going to happen, whether you whether you'll
- 4:15Speaker 2: succeed or whether you'll crash and burn. But at least
- 4:18Speaker 2: we're going to try actually.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Put your sunscreen on if you're aim into the sun.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:24Speaker 3: How would you say that Burn differs musically to your
- 4:27Speaker 3: debut single, Rainfall.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Uh, it's a little bit mm hmm, a bit of
- 4:34Speaker 2: a darker feel. Maybe that the Rainfall, the debut single,
- 4:38Speaker 2: was pretty Upbeat just got that faster tempo and stuff
- 4:43Speaker 2: like that, and maybe slightly more of a poppy tinge
- 4:47Speaker 2: to it.
- 4:47Speaker 1: So I think Burn is a bit bit heavier but darker.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Yeah, not quite so so Upbeat yeh.
- 4:58Speaker 3: No, are they standalone singles?
- 5:00Speaker 1: Are they part of a bigger EP or album? Picture
- 5:04Speaker 1: most likely going to be an EP.
- 5:05Speaker 2: We've got a few songs ready to go for the EP,
- 5:08Speaker 2: so we're just kind of we're still discussing whether we
- 5:12Speaker 2: push on and do a few more songs and turn
- 5:14Speaker 2: it into an album or whether we just do an
- 5:16Speaker 2: EP and then and then work on an album after that.
- 5:18Speaker 2: So yeah, it's definitely going to be part of something,
- 5:21Speaker 2: but whether it's an EP or an album, it's kind
- 5:24Speaker 2: of get to be seen, get to be decided.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned that burns a little bit darker than Rainfall,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and the press release says that it's a heavier, more
- 5:33Speaker 3: intense song. So what's what's the overall sound and feel
- 5:37Speaker 3: of the band. Is it more like Burn or is
- 5:39Speaker 3: it more like Rainfall?
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hmmm?
- 5:45Speaker 2: Probably more like Burn, I would say, but yeah, we
- 5:49Speaker 2: try to we have we have a lane like this
- 5:52Speaker 2: and then we do some songs on the side. Of
- 5:54Speaker 2: the lane, some songs on the side of the lane,
- 5:56Speaker 2: so there's a bit of a range there, but yeah,
- 5:59Speaker 2: i'd say Burn is probably more more along the lines
- 6:03Speaker 2: of the core sound here.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Yeah, And how difficult is it as a band, Like
- 6:07Speaker 3: this is your second single, so when you're trying to
- 6:10Speaker 3: decide what songs to release out there to give people
- 6:13Speaker 3: an idea of the band and get your name out there, Like,
- 6:15Speaker 3: what's the thought process behind that? Like, say, the first
- 6:17Speaker 3: one is a little bit bit lighter, second one is
- 6:19Speaker 3: a bit darker, Like is that a strategic thing to
- 6:21Speaker 3: show people different sides of the band or is it
- 6:23Speaker 3: more what do you think is a better song?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely a bit of strategic thinking comes into it,
- 6:30Speaker 2: Like you want to give people a good sense of
- 6:35Speaker 2: what you're about. So we kind of were tossing up
- 6:39Speaker 2: between Rainfall and Burn which one was going to go first,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and we ended up going with Rainfall first because the
- 6:47Speaker 2: chorus on that.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Is pretty catchy, It's got.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Quite a good hook, so and being slightly on the
- 6:53Speaker 2: poppier side, it's maybe a little bit more accessible to
- 6:56Speaker 2: more people, So we thought that would probably be a
- 6:59Speaker 2: better one to come out with first, and then followed
- 7:02Speaker 2: up with something a bit bit heavier and a bit
- 7:04Speaker 2: more maybe closer to our sound.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Nice now tribal features members. About the band, you would
- 7:12Speaker 3: say before there's far a Will, there's Swerve City, Corritian
- 7:15Speaker 3: and sun God. So how much of each band sound
- 7:18Speaker 3: did you bring to cry Wolf or was it a
- 7:20Speaker 3: completely different venture?
- 7:23Speaker 1: It was pretty pretty new, pretty different benure.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Yeah, So originally I was intending on Swerve City continuing
- 7:32Speaker 2: because our singer from Swerve City left and then I
- 7:36Speaker 2: took over as the singer, and then I tried to
- 7:39Speaker 2: get a few more guys on to replace a couple
- 7:41Speaker 2: of the other members, and then it just ended up
- 7:43Speaker 2: sounding like a completely new band because new new vocals
- 7:48Speaker 2: changes the sound a lot. So yeah, it just sounded
- 7:53Speaker 2: like a new band. So we decided to rebrand as
- 7:55Speaker 2: a new new band. But these early songs mostly ridden
- 8:00Speaker 2: by myself, so it's mainly just my influence so far,
- 8:05Speaker 2: with a little bit of flavor from the other guys
- 8:07Speaker 2: on top. But going forward, it's definitely going to be
- 8:11Speaker 2: a more collaborative approach to writing songs. So yeah, we'll
- 8:15Speaker 2: definitely get some more of the other guys influences in there,
- 8:18Speaker 2: which would be cool, and.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Then you speak about it, it's going to be a
- 8:21Speaker 3: bit more collaborative moving forward. So have you actually sat
- 8:24Speaker 3: down and discussed what direction you're going to go in
- 8:27Speaker 3: sonically or are you just sort of letting it come naturally.
- 8:30Speaker 2: We got heaps of like bits and pieces of songs
- 8:33Speaker 2: and demos and stuff like that. Like all of us
- 8:37Speaker 2: together have got different bits and pieces that we've got.
- 8:40Speaker 1: In the bank.
- 8:41Speaker 2: So we'll start to pull out a couple of those
- 8:44Speaker 2: and just work on them together. But yeah, definitely definitely
- 8:48Speaker 2: wanted to just come naturally, Like you don't really want
- 8:51Speaker 2: to be forcing stuff.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So yeah, there's heaps of stuff to work on.
- 8:57Speaker 2: So we'll just take take little bits that we have
- 9:00Speaker 2: here and there and develop them into new songs and
- 9:02Speaker 2: see what comes out of it.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:05Speaker 3: There's another line in your press release talking about the
- 9:08Speaker 3: band coming together with his shared vision, and it said
- 9:10Speaker 3: that you want to create something bold, threshed and emotionally resonant.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Like do you think you've achieved that yet still or
- 9:17Speaker 3: or you still a work in progress?
- 9:20Speaker 1: I think I think we're we're well on our way.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I think in terms of the New Zealand scene,
- 9:26Speaker 2: where we're from. There's not really another band that sounds
- 9:31Speaker 2: quite like us, So I think we've got our own
- 9:34Speaker 2: space in this scene.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Which is quite cool.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Yeah, we're kind of on the heavier side of radio
- 9:41Speaker 2: sort of stuff, but not too heavy that that your
- 9:45Speaker 2: mum can't listen to it kind of things.
- 9:49Speaker 3: So what is the rest of twenty twenty five into
- 9:51Speaker 3: twenty twenty six to look like for Privolf? Maybe got
- 9:54Speaker 3: tours planned shows?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah, we've got a couple of shows lined up.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah, we're playing with some pretty cool bands in the
- 10:02Speaker 2: next couple of months.
- 10:05Speaker 1: And at the moment, we're not really booking our own shows.
- 10:08Speaker 2: We're just jumping on other people shows just makes life
- 10:12Speaker 2: easier for us. And we're still still trying to build
- 10:15Speaker 2: a bit of a following and.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Stuff like that.
- 10:18Speaker 2: But early next year we're looking at doing more of
- 10:21Speaker 2: our own stuff, get a couple of tours going and
- 10:23Speaker 2: stuff like that, and yeah, just continue writing. Got lots
- 10:27Speaker 2: of ideas bloody around that we need to pull together.
- 10:32Speaker 2: So yeah, just writing new music and playing shows.
- 10:35Speaker 1: That's the plan.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Fantasy Kevil. Thanks very much for your time, bro, it's
- 10:40Speaker 3: been a pleasure speaking with you. Burn is out October thirty,
- 10:43Speaker 3: but it's premiering via Heavy at nine pm on October twelve.
- 10:46Speaker 3: That's Australian time, kids, and here the crack of the
- 10:49Speaker 3: song goes. You won me over with it straight away,
- 10:51Speaker 3: so best I can. Where can people find out more
- 10:53Speaker 3: about the band or pre order a copy of your music?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Cool?
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah, you can check us out on any social media,
- 11:00Speaker 2: but Instagram is probably our main one, so you can
- 11:02Speaker 2: find us at cry Wolf band and z and that's
- 11:06Speaker 2: where you all keep up to date with everything that
- 11:08Speaker 2: we've got going on. But yeah, thanks so much for
- 11:11Speaker 2: talking to me. I really appreciate it, and thanks for
- 11:13Speaker 2: all the support
