- 0:04Speaker 1: Jason Kipness with us.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Welcome back boys, Thank you missed you guys, as always.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Missed you too.
- 0:11Speaker 3: How are you and some of your former teammates doing
- 0:14Speaker 3: in life? We were just chatting about a little trip
- 0:16Speaker 3: you were on and it include some other notable names.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We just got back me Lonnie Chisenhol, Michael Brantley, my
- 0:23Speaker 2: brother and then uncle and a group of total of
- 0:26Speaker 2: twelve I think, but chisen brant were with me for
- 0:28Speaker 2: a Scotland golf trip, a Bugalest trip where played Saint
- 0:32Speaker 2: Andrew's played Royal Door Knock, Trump Turnberry, Royal Troon. We
- 0:38Speaker 2: hit up a bunch of the good ones. It was awesome.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I love that.
- 0:43Speaker 3: And Kratz was asking about Michael Brantley's swing, how is it?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah? I said it was just as annoying as his
- 0:48Speaker 2: baseball swing because it's quiet, smooth, consistent, the exact opposite
- 0:53Speaker 2: of my swing for baseball. And so he's he's a
- 0:58Speaker 2: but he's like a plus one. He's a Steve Golfer. Wow?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Does he does? He? Does?
- 1:02Speaker 1: He?
- 1:02Speaker 4: Does he address the ball like he would when he'd
- 1:05Speaker 4: get in the box. Where he going? Did he go
- 1:07Speaker 4: the tongue. Like for me, when I would hit, it
- 1:12Speaker 4: was like I would bite my tongue. They'd be like
- 1:15Speaker 4: in my cheek.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He was just like, it's just like he's like he's
- 1:20Speaker 2: falling asleep. Yeah, that's how how calm he is. Tell
- 1:25Speaker 2: him to get a life. I do every day. Okay, good, good,
- 1:31Speaker 2: he has a life.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It's full of sweet swings and.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Yeah it's getting it's getting good at golf is what
- 1:36Speaker 2: his life is.
- 1:37Speaker 1: That is his life.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Hey, before we start, we did just learn minutes ago
- 1:41Speaker 3: the first home run derby participant Junior Camonaro is big.
- 1:47Speaker 2: I love it. I love it, big, big WBC homers
- 1:52Speaker 2: he had, so it'd be fun to watch him again.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a big winterball guy. He's young, he's twenty two.
- 1:58Speaker 3: We talked about him a lot on yesterday's show on
- 2:01Speaker 3: Pace for mid forties homers and then the walk rate's
- 2:03Speaker 3: gone up a ton this year. So he just keeps
- 2:05Speaker 3: getting better as he should. He's only a baby in
- 2:08Speaker 3: our league, but he's a superstar already. So we'll see
- 2:10Speaker 3: him in the derby. Awesome that he commits early to
- 2:12Speaker 3: starts to set the tone for other guys to join
- 2:15Speaker 3: the party. In Philadelphia, and we'll be anxiously awaiting the
- 2:18Speaker 3: Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper.
- 2:20Speaker 2: That's what I was. Let me know when those two
- 2:22Speaker 2: are in, that's gonna be Muster TV three.
- 2:25Speaker 4: There's gonna be three that half. There's three that have
- 2:28Speaker 4: to go in. You already finished, You already picked two
- 2:32Speaker 4: Schwarber Harper.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Trout's not doing it.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Oh that's tragic. Why why wouldn't he do it?
- 2:40Speaker 1: It sounded like he already said he was out. Yeah, exactly.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Have you ever heard it? He's never been asked. He said, Well,
- 2:49Speaker 2: that can't be true.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that can't be true.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That's what he said. That's it's not mine. I understand,
- 2:55Speaker 2: that's what he said. But look past that. That's BS okay. Yeah,
- 3:03Speaker 2: that would be an awesome Philly guy. That would be cool.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That's a good call, though.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Shag during during the home run derby like the kids do,
- 3:11Speaker 4: so he could be like he can be like, hey,
- 3:13Speaker 4: oh shagging during the home run derby?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Can picture like what one of his MVP year MVP
- 3:19Speaker 3: of seasons like twenty, I don't know, like fifteen or something,
- 3:21Speaker 3: and trash just like looking at his phone like I
- 3:24Speaker 3: hope comishion calls no way.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you, kid, no way, like maybe yeah,
- 3:32Speaker 1: no way.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Well starter, but that's what it is.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Slow start now, No, he's not even a slow starter.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Nothing, nothing is going to convince me that the league
- 3:41Speaker 3: does not want him in Derby's in the past, and
- 3:44Speaker 3: he has hinted that is going to be now.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Okay until he comes on here and tells us otherwise.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I'm taking a man for his word.
- 3:52Speaker 3: That's fine, But he's not going to be there this year,
- 3:55Speaker 3: not for sure, but most likely because of the hammy
- 3:58Speaker 3: that he's dealing with. I don't even know if he'll
- 4:00Speaker 3: be back for the game. We'll see. Stay tuned on
- 4:02Speaker 3: that front. And let's start with a segment we haven't
- 4:05Speaker 3: hit in a minute, Ump show snee right, are you
- 4:15Speaker 3: kidding me?
- 4:15Speaker 1: How soft are we?
- 4:17Speaker 3: The Red Sox broadcast booth after Wilson Contreras was ejected
- 4:21Speaker 3: for tapping his helmet on his way back to the dugout.
- 4:25Speaker 3: A lot to dissect here, Kip, because Contrera's post game
- 4:28Speaker 3: that he was actually just talking to a fan in
- 4:30Speaker 3: the stands about it. But my question is, even if
- 4:33Speaker 3: he was talking to the ump about it, really we
- 4:35Speaker 3: have abs now, So If you do that and say
- 4:38Speaker 3: you disagreed with a call that you can't review, who
- 4:42Speaker 3: cares to me? That is a level of softness in
- 4:45Speaker 3: our sport that goes too far. He didn't curse out
- 4:48Speaker 3: the ump he didn't throw something. You can't do the tap,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but the ump nin Glentz said the post game that
- 4:54Speaker 3: it's like auto ejection.
- 4:55Speaker 1: If you do that, still, Kratz, you.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Want to take us first, or I mean mine's mine's
- 5:01Speaker 2: very simple. Sorry.
- 5:03Speaker 4: The rule says if you do it, and it was
- 5:05Speaker 4: on a check swing. It was on a check swing.
- 5:08Speaker 4: It wasn't on a strike three. It was the first
- 5:09Speaker 4: base umpire and he was obviously a triple A. They
- 5:12Speaker 4: had the check swing challenge John. But if he if
- 5:17Speaker 4: you watch the video, I feel like he did it.
- 5:19Speaker 4: And I know Nick Lentz had thrown Taylor Walls out
- 5:22Speaker 4: last year for doing it.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I just he did it. He did it.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Whether he was talking to a fan over here and
- 5:28Speaker 4: the umpire was over there, he did it. He's like, yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 4: i'd have checked that one. Well, now you're go go
- 5:34Speaker 4: check it on the on the screen in the locker room.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Soft.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I'm a little annoyed by both sides Okay, let's be yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 2: let's be uh. Let's let's take into account the context here,
- 5:48Speaker 2: who it was, what they were doing. He wasn't talking,
- 5:51Speaker 2: if he wasn't if he was talking to someone outside
- 5:53Speaker 2: over the dug out. Let's be clear he knew what
- 5:55Speaker 2: he was doing, so let's not act like he's completely innocent.
- 5:59Speaker 2: And if it is AutoMac injection, is AutoMac ejection. But
- 6:03Speaker 2: if you're walking away, I have always had a problem
- 6:06Speaker 2: with that. If it's something where you stand around home
- 6:08Speaker 2: plate and are everyone is now looking at you and
- 6:11Speaker 2: the umpire discussing it, that's where it could be looked
- 6:13Speaker 2: at as showing him up. If he's walking to the
- 6:15Speaker 2: dug out, people have already turned their attention to the
- 6:17Speaker 2: next batter coming up or something like that. Umpire has
- 6:20Speaker 2: got to have thicker skin than that, So that is
- 6:22Speaker 2: that is a very soft thing. But neither size is
- 6:25Speaker 2: really innocent in this one. In my opinion, Kip, what
- 6:28Speaker 2: would you hear if you were in the dugout right there?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Tuck your ears in? Rabbit? Oh? Absolutely, the only way,
- 6:35Speaker 2: the only way, Nick Lnz.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, There'll be plenty of people that like,
- 6:40Speaker 4: come on, bro, the only way Nick Lentz sees it
- 6:44Speaker 4: is if he gives them one of these bye and
- 6:47Speaker 4: then he goes.
- 6:49Speaker 2: He's looking for it. He's staring him down, he's watching him.
- 6:51Speaker 2: He's looking for it. But he's looking for it because
- 6:54Speaker 2: he gets Wilson concerns. Who has a knack for doing
- 6:57Speaker 2: dumb stuff like that. Sometimes we're him self in trouble
- 7:01Speaker 2: emotional Yeah yeah, okay.
- 7:06Speaker 3: So you're looking towards something like that. I know, but
- 7:10Speaker 3: I have multiple problems here. First of all, I don't
- 7:12Speaker 3: care if it's you know, quote something auto or not.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It doesn't really impact. I mean, it does impact the game.
- 7:17Speaker 3: It impacts the fan experience. The only consistent Boston hitter
- 7:20Speaker 3: all year and he's booted from the game. It impacts
- 7:23Speaker 3: the game. And he didn't do anything that was so egregious.
- 7:26Speaker 3: So if that is a thing with the league office,
- 7:28Speaker 3: let's get rid of that now.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, it's one thing if guys were going to
- 7:32Speaker 3: do this left and right on a ball or strike
- 7:35Speaker 3: right when we were getting ready for the ABS era,
- 7:37Speaker 3: that's one thing. The sun a check swing. I'm just
- 7:40Speaker 3: it's too soft. I completely agree. I would have said
- 7:42Speaker 3: the same thing on the broadcast, just like they did
- 7:44Speaker 3: the other day. Like Kip, don't you think they come on?
- 7:47Speaker 3: Let's not act like this is the Bible. We can
- 7:49Speaker 3: switch the quote rule if this is actually a rule
- 7:52Speaker 3: in a book.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Then but once you switch the rule, fun but the
- 7:55Speaker 2: rule stands in place. I just it is. I don't
- 7:58Speaker 2: trust me. It craspoes me. Well. I not want to
- 8:00Speaker 2: defend umpires that often at all. I'm more likely than
- 8:04Speaker 2: not being the one who's that arms with them. But
- 8:07Speaker 2: it's I get it. I would be the one who
- 8:09Speaker 2: would push the envelope too, and try to push as
- 8:11Speaker 2: far as I can until I get dropped, like till
- 8:13Speaker 2: right before he would toss me and never get tossed.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And I knew what would get me toss And Wilson
- 8:18Speaker 2: knows better too. He knew he crossed the line a
- 8:20Speaker 2: little bit there. But again it's that proverbial liner that
- 8:23Speaker 2: if it's in the writing, if it's not, it's just
- 8:25Speaker 2: weak on the umpire's side too. The games they really do,
- 8:29Speaker 2: they really do make. There are some of them who
- 8:31Speaker 2: have just eat bigger egos than players, and it's not
- 8:34Speaker 2: fun to watch them try to take over games with
- 8:37Speaker 2: their feelings.
- 8:40Speaker 3: People dehydration sucks. Quints electrolyte stick packs to the rescue.
- 8:46Speaker 3: I order them, I use them all of the.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Time, somebody who may or may not have had some
- 8:52Speaker 5: adult beverages in their life. The next day, you know
- 8:54Speaker 5: what flavor? I like watermelon and I don't like watermelon.
- 8:57Speaker 5: I'll go raspberry and it helps me to get my
- 9:00Speaker 5: citrus salt in. But if I do, it helps me
- 9:03Speaker 5: to get back to normal, feeling good and ready to
- 9:05Speaker 5: go the next day.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yep, tough workout or dry mouth in the morning, whatever
- 9:09Speaker 3: it is, this is going to help you out. Quint
- 9:12Speaker 3: always has the best deals for you. You can go

- 9:37Speaker 3: Drug administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, care,
- 9:40Speaker 3: or prevent any disease.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And that's what makes players say, yeah, I really like
- 9:43Speaker 4: that umpire or he's just really tough to deal with,
- 9:46Speaker 4: like moments like this. And I'm not sure if Nick
- 9:49Speaker 4: Lentz is like that. I remember him when he was
- 9:51Speaker 4: in the minor leagues and I don't remember him like
- 9:54Speaker 4: having a quick fuse or letter of the law type
- 9:57Speaker 4: of thing. But he's done it before. Whether he should
- 10:00Speaker 4: or shouldn't do it, it's just the same as hey,
- 10:03Speaker 4: we're going to check the replay. If the manager comes
- 10:06Speaker 4: out to discuss or argue what the what the replay
- 10:11Speaker 4: result was, it's immediate injection. It's not even like I'll
- 10:15Speaker 4: let you talk for a little bit. It's just like, nope, sorry,
- 10:17Speaker 4: like we don't talk about that. And I think there's
- 10:20Speaker 4: I think it's okay that there's lines because he's walking
- 10:22Speaker 4: back to the dugout and he goes he goes like this,
- 10:25Speaker 4: That entire section over top of the dugout is now
- 10:28Speaker 4: all over that umpire. They're getting a laugh from, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 4: from what Contreras did, so I see what they're saying.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I also see that. Nick Lentz could have easily just
- 10:39Speaker 2: been like, Okay, I'm gonna watch you guys throw the
- 10:41Speaker 2: ball around.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Yeah, he wasn't hurting anyone. And hey, if you really
- 10:46Speaker 3: want to have a feel for everything going on, and
- 10:47Speaker 3: knowing that Wilson Contreras always gets involved with things, you
- 10:50Speaker 3: could also have a feel that his country went through
- 10:52Speaker 3: a crazy tragedy and he's been talking about it a
- 10:54Speaker 3: lot with Venezuela and you know, guys have been, you know,
- 10:59Speaker 3: in tears the last few days with the with the
- 11:02Speaker 3: natural disaster and all that there. So to me, it's
- 11:06Speaker 3: it's too much like for me. If you're a league
- 11:09Speaker 3: that actually has a feel, you look at this and
- 11:11Speaker 3: you're like, all right, now we're gonna tell the umps,
- 11:12Speaker 3: Like we don't have to be looking for the player
- 11:14Speaker 3: to see if he taps his head. We are still
- 11:17Speaker 3: playing like a sport with some toughness. Can we not
- 11:19Speaker 3: be this soft? It's one thing if the guy spits
- 11:22Speaker 3: in your face or curses, like, I get all that right,
- 11:25Speaker 3: Like this isn't even setting a bad example for a kid.
- 11:28Speaker 3: He's on his way back and goes like this pathetic.
- 11:31Speaker 3: That's my thing is like take away all of the
- 11:32Speaker 3: nuances and if it's a real thing, and like in
- 11:36Speaker 3: the rule book, I don't care. I'm just saying, take
- 11:38Speaker 3: a step back now for the league going forward, send
- 11:40Speaker 3: out a memo and be like that's too far with
- 11:43Speaker 3: Nick did here is say, oh, I'm gonna look at
- 11:46Speaker 3: this player and try to get him booted from the game.
- 11:49Speaker 3: And also like not even I don't know a warning.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't even think that's necessary. But I'm just saying, like,
- 11:54Speaker 3: you're now taking away their best player from the game
- 11:56Speaker 3: for that.
- 11:57Speaker 1: That's the part that bothers me. Let's hear from Wilson Contraras.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a quick trigger. Yeah it's quick.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It's too quick.
- 12:06Speaker 2: There was no confrontation. He didn't even know he was
- 12:08Speaker 2: thrown out.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And I would also say, Scott, I don't care if
- 12:11Speaker 4: it's the best player or the worst player.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 12:16Speaker 3: But I'm just saying, like the impact you're taking a
- 12:18Speaker 3: player out of a game for this pathetic to me.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Pathetic, Like what what's the line that's all to me?
- 12:25Speaker 3: This is the line that I think we crossed in
- 12:27Speaker 3: terms of being too soft as a sport.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Here's Wilson Contraras, was that directed at him?
- 12:34Speaker 2: Was that?
- 12:35Speaker 6: No, it wasn't directed on him. It was just like
- 12:37Speaker 6: I was. I was looking at defense and instead like
- 12:40Speaker 6: a Dominican fan was slugging to me, ding that while
- 12:44Speaker 6: I was talking my helmet, so I was looking at him.
- 12:47Speaker 6: It was he keeps telling me you're good.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Your eye just like breathe.
- 12:50Speaker 6: I was like, okay, I was like, I was like there.
- 12:53Speaker 6: And then when I when I got to the dugout
- 12:56Speaker 6: that I saw shot going out going out and then
- 12:59Speaker 6: I turned around. Then myers told me like, you got
- 13:02Speaker 6: try and I was like, well what And then I
- 13:05Speaker 6: went out there to explain to him, like to ask
- 13:07Speaker 6: him why he threw me out, and he told me, like,
- 13:09Speaker 6: because you thought you were help me. Yeah, but I
- 13:11Speaker 6: didn't make eye contact with you. I didn't argue, I
- 13:13Speaker 6: didn't jail, didn't do nothing wrong. And he told me, yeah,
- 13:17Speaker 6: I have to throw you all. He liked, didn't have to?
- 13:19Speaker 6: Would you made that choice?
- 13:22Speaker 1: I actually thought he nailed that one. Yeah. He didn't
- 13:24Speaker 1: go right up to him and do this in his
- 13:25Speaker 1: face either.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Well he didn't. He wasn't confrontational by it. But I
- 13:30Speaker 2: don't know if he was talking just to the fan
- 13:32Speaker 2: over there. He knows he where he he knows he
- 13:34Speaker 2: was in sight. It's it's he's it's I don't know.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Seems to be him a lot, that's all I guess.
- 13:42Speaker 2: So I guess he lives. He loses the benefit of
- 13:43Speaker 2: the doubt in my mind. That being said, he's not wrong. Uh.
- 13:47Speaker 2: I thought the umpire was looking for it and had
- 13:49Speaker 2: it out for him and was wrong too. Like I said,
- 13:52Speaker 2: I was, both sides kind of annoyed me in this one, right.
- 13:54Speaker 3: But I'm saying if if if you feel like both
- 13:56Speaker 3: sides annoyed you, then I'm always going to side with
- 13:58Speaker 3: the player because I don't care about it. I don't
- 14:00Speaker 3: pay money for the ump I pay money to watch
- 14:02Speaker 3: Wilson Contreras.
- 14:03Speaker 2: You know, have you ever had the umps change their
- 14:07Speaker 2: entire personality behind home plate compared to when they were
- 14:09Speaker 2: in the field.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Not as much had them change when it was a
- 14:15Speaker 4: I had the same umpire on a Wednesday Thursday getaway
- 14:18Speaker 4: day in Oakland. The next Sunday. The very next Sunday,
- 14:24Speaker 4: we had the ESPN game in Chicago, same umpire, two
- 14:28Speaker 4: different dudes.
- 14:30Speaker 2: They're human too, Yeah, I understand that, But there's these
- 14:34Speaker 2: guys when like they'll be as they'll be sweethearts in
- 14:37Speaker 2: the field when they come around third base, second base
- 14:39Speaker 2: and you talk to them and they're just in great
- 14:41Speaker 2: moods and all that stuff. When they get behind home
- 14:43Speaker 2: plate though they are they got their guard up. They
- 14:45Speaker 2: got a short trigger.
- 14:46Speaker 6: Now.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I know this guy was at first base for this one.
- 14:49Speaker 2: But like they they they have bad days too. They
- 14:51Speaker 2: are human too, but they there's something that switches on
- 14:54Speaker 2: them when they're behind home plates that they have quicker
- 14:56Speaker 2: triggers always.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I didn't have an interaction. I didn't have a lot
- 14:59Speaker 4: of yield interaction. Like you're out there yucking it up,
- 15:02Speaker 4: like pretending the box with with with uh Anderson. You
- 15:09Speaker 4: know you're doing all the good stuff, practicing your swing
- 15:13Speaker 4: between pitches. I'm back there grinding sweat and wonder if
- 15:16Speaker 4: they're gonna take me out of the game.
- 15:17Speaker 2: All that stuffy ah they are.
- 15:19Speaker 3: We have levers in place to fix most of their
- 15:22Speaker 3: mistakes now, but we can't fix the ejection. What we
- 15:24Speaker 3: can do is just make sure going forward that we
- 15:26Speaker 3: have a soft meter and that one was too soft,
- 15:29Speaker 3: just like the broadcast set.
- 15:30Speaker 1: That's all that. That's my mean Okay, good settled.
- 15:34Speaker 3: I guess you guys are right. I mean I worked
- 15:36Speaker 3: for m LBE. They had too many rules. I left,
- 15:38Speaker 3: so yeah, I don't like rules.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I got it.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Uh what about rules for Aaron Nolan in terms of
- 15:43Speaker 3: tweaking what he's doing? Krats, I know there's been suggestions,
- 15:47Speaker 3: but nothing's working yet. It is he Do you see
- 15:50Speaker 3: him actively trying to do different things since it's been
- 15:53Speaker 3: about a year where the era is close to six.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Ish a little bit I played with him, and a
- 15:58Speaker 4: little bit that I was on the radio for the Phillies.
- 16:01Speaker 4: He's always tweaking something. He's always trying to tinker with stuff.
- 16:05Speaker 4: He doesn't like the way his curveball looks, he doesn't
- 16:09Speaker 4: like his leg kick timing. And I'm like, bro, I
- 16:11Speaker 4: could go back and watch like your freshman year when
- 16:14Speaker 4: you pitched in the in the regionals for LSU, you
- 16:17Speaker 4: look exactly the same, and he's like.
- 16:19Speaker 2: I don't even look the same for my last start.
- 16:21Speaker 4: He's always trying to tweak it, and he's at that
- 16:23Speaker 4: point in his career where he's giving up a lot
- 16:26Speaker 4: of damage, so he has to figure out how to
- 16:29Speaker 4: get soft contact in other ways than what he used
- 16:33Speaker 4: how he used to do it.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Yeah, five A two era. He was booed off the field.
- 16:41Speaker 3: He had a five to nothing lead. Phillies lost that game.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Piot's got him back in the what Kratz calls kipt
- 16:48Speaker 3: the poop series. People ask the P and the P
- 16:53Speaker 3: zero zero just in case, you know, just in case
- 16:56Speaker 3: you didn't know, and you don't watch the regional broadcast. Hey,
- 16:58Speaker 3: Addison Barger is going to be shut down for a
- 17:00Speaker 3: couple of weeks. M or I revealed a stress fracture
- 17:02Speaker 3: in his back, felt soreness while ramping up his hitting.
- 17:05Speaker 3: That's the report from Hazel May yesterday. As the Blue
- 17:09Speaker 3: Jays have been going through it with the World Series
- 17:11Speaker 3: hangover of injuries to pictures mostly but some position players.
- 17:15Speaker 3: I mean, Barger was a huge, huge part of last
- 17:17Speaker 3: year's team.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Krats massive, massive, and I get a back fracture every
- 17:23Speaker 4: time I watch him swing. There's some dudes that like
- 17:25Speaker 4: swing really hard. He's one of them. So can he
- 17:29Speaker 4: if this is something, I mean, a stress fracture in
- 17:32Speaker 4: your back, like it feels like it sounds terrible, and
- 17:37Speaker 4: you know, do you question We've talked about a little bit.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Do you question that do you question the fact that
- 17:42Speaker 4: you know, maybe he's gonna have to, you know, calm
- 17:45Speaker 4: his swing down a little bit.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Who knows.
- 17:47Speaker 4: But if you look at his picture and he's from Washington,
- 17:49Speaker 4: he looks like Travis Snyder. I want you to do
- 17:51Speaker 4: a side by side totally off topic, sorry Barger, but
- 17:55Speaker 4: he looks like Travis Snyder. Just check it out and
- 17:57Speaker 4: I'm like, what is this? What's happening in Washington?
- 18:02Speaker 3: Hey, seakeeeks helping us with some game previews. We have
- 18:06Speaker 3: to start with Scooble versus Schalitler. If you're in the
- 18:09Speaker 3: New York area and you'd like to see two of
- 18:12Speaker 3: the best starters in baseball, perhaps the two best in
- 18:15Speaker 3: the American League, this is your opportunity.
- 18:19Speaker 1: And Schlittler's actually coming off.
- 18:20Speaker 3: It might have been his worst start of the year, Krats,
- 18:22Speaker 3: even though the defense was also letting him down.
- 18:24Speaker 1: In that outing against Boston, they lost the game.
- 18:28Speaker 4: Zero earned runs. They lost the game. I get it,
- 18:30Speaker 4: he didn't get out of it, but he was essentially
- 18:32Speaker 4: one hanging cutter away from Durban, not time or putting
- 18:37Speaker 4: him ahead, Like I get it, unearned runs as he
- 18:41Speaker 4: already went down and maybe he didn't have his best stuff,
- 18:44Speaker 4: but man, he is he is electric and he he
- 18:48Speaker 4: can change a game.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I'll be interesting to see, like does he like you
- 18:51Speaker 2: hear this?
- 18:52Speaker 4: Oh, he gets up for big games when another when
- 18:55Speaker 4: a really good pitcher, Like they're trying to show each
- 18:57Speaker 4: other up. It'll be interesting to see if like Cam
- 19:00Speaker 4: Slitler has that or not.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Well.
- 19:02Speaker 3: And this is also right, this is also the back
- 19:05Speaker 3: to back Sie Young Award winner going up against the
- 19:08Speaker 3: front runner in the American League right now, Kratz, Right,
- 19:11Speaker 3: I mean Cam Slitler's at a one six to two
- 19:14Speaker 3: era on the season today.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, they're giving it out today.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It is you had one tiny little blip and I'm
- 19:22Speaker 4: not even talking about the last one as a blip
- 19:23Speaker 4: like it is today.
- 19:25Speaker 2: So yeah, interesting.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Halfway through the Tigers, you know, they're in ultimate ultimate
- 19:31Speaker 3: win now mode, while the Yankees have dropped seven of nine.
- 19:34Speaker 1: They'll be fine, but you know they're starting to.
- 19:35Speaker 3: Feel it a little bit with with Judge out, with
- 19:38Speaker 3: Grisham out, with Standing out, with Freed out.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Right, they're missing dudes.
- 19:43Speaker 3: They're missing impactful players and it hasn't really affected much
- 19:46Speaker 3: up until the last couple of weeks. You could also
- 19:48Speaker 3: just make a case that no matter what, every June,
- 19:50Speaker 3: the Yankees just like to give you a little adversity,
- 19:53Speaker 3: get their fans a little pissed off.
- 19:55Speaker 1: They do this every year, they have a June smoon.
- 19:57Speaker 2: It's just they make it.
- 19:59Speaker 4: They make it so that fans like, this offense is
- 20:02Speaker 4: never gonna work. They can't just hit home runs. So
- 20:05Speaker 4: they do that where they're just like, no, we're not
- 20:07Speaker 4: gonna We're not gonna hit right now, and then we'll
- 20:09Speaker 4: end up still having the best offense in the game,
- 20:12Speaker 4: just like they did last year.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Other good matchups if you're trying to grab a ticket
- 20:17Speaker 3: on Sea Geek Jacob de Grom against Tanner Byby for
- 20:20Speaker 3: the Rangers and the Guardians, or can I interest you
- 20:23Speaker 3: in Matthew Boyd back with the Cubs rotation that is
- 20:26Speaker 3: missing like everyone, so he's the last man standing there.
- 20:29Speaker 3: So we'll see how the Cubs do against the Padres
- 20:31Speaker 3: team that needs to get the offense going. The code
- 20:34Speaker 3: for you is territory one zero. That's ten percent off
- 20:37Speaker 3: your next set of MLB tickets at SEKK ten percent off.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Is the code Territory one zero to make that happen
- 20:43Speaker 3: make sure you click the link in the description to
- 20:45Speaker 3: download the app and automatically gets added to your account
- 20:47Speaker 3: so you can use it later.
- 20:49Speaker 1: A kip for me. We talked.
- 20:51Speaker 3: We've talked ab us a couple times recently. So Barger's
- 20:54Speaker 3: another big bat speed guy, had a big breakout last
- 20:57Speaker 3: year as those numbers continue to go up. So we
- 21:00Speaker 3: went over at Isaiah kind of Fileffers said he had
- 21:04Speaker 3: you got hurt from from trying to up his bat
- 21:06Speaker 3: speed like Polar set it on our show yesterday. You
- 21:08Speaker 3: might see some similarities here. Well, all of a sudden,
- 21:11Speaker 3: you're gonna get these kind of injuries popping up the
- 21:14Speaker 3: same way that pictures chase velocity.
- 21:20Speaker 2: It just sounds stupid to me. I'm sorry. It just
- 21:22Speaker 2: sounds you're always working out and training to get better
- 21:28Speaker 2: bat speed, or to get stronger, or to get more
- 21:30Speaker 2: more flexible as you get older instead of stronger. Once
- 21:33Speaker 2: you get like to a certain age, it's more about
- 21:34Speaker 2: elasticity instead of strength and stuff like that. But yeah,
- 21:37Speaker 2: you're always lifting weights and doing abs and twists and
- 21:39Speaker 2: trunk twists to get better space. At the end of
- 21:42Speaker 2: the day, I don't care what the number says. If
- 21:44Speaker 2: I feel good. And if I'm having success, why do
- 21:46Speaker 2: I care what an analytical number says? If you've already
- 21:49Speaker 2: are doing something, well, what where? What where do you?
- 21:52Speaker 2: Where's the gain in trying to chase that? I get it.
- 21:55Speaker 2: For pictures velocity, there are gain is and you're gonna
- 21:57Speaker 2: have more success. You're gonna be more margin for air
- 22:00Speaker 2: and stuff like that. But like the batsweet is only
- 22:02Speaker 2: going to go up two miles an hour.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Ten feet ten feet of distance. Ten that's what you're chasing,
- 22:08Speaker 4: the ten extra feet.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Yeah, but if you get it enough that ten feet is.
- 22:14Speaker 3: Not going to matter, I know, as success. And then
- 22:20Speaker 3: last year he broke out right like for his purposes.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I mean, you know, he broke out. He doesn't make
- 22:24Speaker 3: sometimes he has strikeout issues, and they were like, if
- 22:27Speaker 3: you're going to make contact and.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Make contact, dude, wasn't any wall scrapers? Right?
- 22:34Speaker 1: Mason Miller blew a save, which is very rare.
- 22:38Speaker 3: The Cubs have been these walk off ladening monsters, and
- 22:43Speaker 3: they're also a super streaky team. But here's actually what
- 22:45Speaker 3: I want to get to is a theme. Saya Suzuki
- 22:48Speaker 3: in the past week has hit a home runoff miz
- 22:51Speaker 3: and No one else had done that in a minute.
- 22:53Speaker 3: And then also he goes, you know, walk off off
- 22:56Speaker 3: the wall against Mason Miller, like the dude knows how
- 23:00Speaker 3: to hit against certain pitchers that no one else can
- 23:02Speaker 3: hit against.
- 23:04Speaker 2: It's no, he's a valuable asset. He's a good right
- 23:06Speaker 2: handed bat. When you talked about him, That's why Ryan
- 23:08Speaker 2: was just talking about the Mariners possibly being interested in him.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I don't think the Cubs would let him go regardless
- 23:13Speaker 2: midway through when they're still competing right now too. But
- 23:16Speaker 2: it's kind of been the whole lineup a little bit.
- 23:19Speaker 2: There's just they're inconsistent. It tells by them already having
- 23:23Speaker 2: a ten game losing streak, ten game winning streak, a
- 23:25Speaker 2: second ten game winning streak, like it's very What they
- 23:28Speaker 2: do do well is they keep pushing it and they
- 23:30Speaker 2: keep getting on base. So I think their problem has
- 23:32Speaker 2: always been this year is hitting with runners in scoring position.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna read Jesse's tweet right there, ten walk up.
- 23:40Speaker 2: But yeah, they have this late any magic so Boll
- 23:42Speaker 2: Chicago teams right now actually do. I think White Sox
- 23:45Speaker 2: are like twenty three and five in their last twenty
- 23:48Speaker 2: eight at home with like ten walk offs and the
- 23:50Speaker 2: Cubs have ten walk offs. There's something ridiculous that both
- 23:53Speaker 2: teams are winning a bunch of late games. But it's
- 23:56Speaker 2: fun to watch. I think the Cubs lineup just kind
- 23:59Speaker 2: of is so much better when Suzuki's going though, because
- 24:03Speaker 2: it evens it out, because they have Bush, they have Pca,
- 24:06Speaker 2: they got lefties. They just need that kind of complimentary
- 24:09Speaker 2: right bat, right handed power bat. And I think when
- 24:12Speaker 2: he's going, well, it really does change the entire lineup.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Streaky team, right, I guess they both have their streakiness
- 24:20Speaker 3: to acrats. I mean one team is just overall streaky
- 24:22Speaker 3: and then the other one is yet much better the
- 24:25Speaker 3: White Sox at home than they've been on the road.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Yeah more just more just home road splits than streaky
- 24:31Speaker 2: for the White Sox.
- 24:32Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, that'd be a massive move. They move
- 24:35Speaker 4: Seya out of that lineup, which they have extra. You know,
- 24:39Speaker 4: they have thump in that lineup to get pitching because
- 24:42Speaker 4: they need pitching.
- 24:44Speaker 2: They Valencias there's closure and he has like four saves
- 24:47Speaker 2: on the ear right. They're not really they play a
- 24:51Speaker 2: lot like they don't. I don't know, they don't. They
- 24:54Speaker 2: don't they don't play enough to need that clos.
- 25:05Speaker 3: In the Weeds great article by Mitch Mannon in The
- 25:08Speaker 3: Athletic on players returning to where it all began or
- 25:12Speaker 3: a team that they spent a lot of time with.
- 25:14Speaker 3: Mitch also part of our Bluebird Territory show and podcast
- 25:18Speaker 3: covering the Toronto Blue Jays. This came up because Bobachet
- 25:20Speaker 3: just went back to Toronto for the Bo Bowl against
- 25:24Speaker 3: the Blue Jays now as a member of the Mets,
- 25:26Speaker 3: and he was pretty emotional. And Bo's a pretty reserved guy, right,
- 25:30Speaker 3: He kind of keeps it low key, but he was
- 25:32Speaker 3: getting emotional when he was chatting. So this story guys
- 25:35Speaker 3: dives into some other players and what the returns are, like,
- 25:37Speaker 3: how busy and hectic it gets. It went over some fuel,
- 25:42Speaker 3: like Kevin Gossman was a little pissed that the Orioles
- 25:46Speaker 3: didn't do any kind of welcome back tribute or anything
- 25:48Speaker 3: to him when he went back for the first time
- 25:51Speaker 3: to Baltimore. Chris Bassett, who returned to Toronto in June
- 25:54Speaker 3: after three years with the Blue Jays, said he didn't
- 25:57Speaker 3: like any part of it, even though he understood it.
- 25:59Speaker 3: He just doesn't like having to watch himself on the screen.
- 26:01Speaker 3: He doesn't like staring at former teammates that are like.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Hey, Chris, welcome back, we missed.
- 26:06Speaker 3: You, Like he wants to look at them and be like, Okay,
- 26:08Speaker 3: I want to take these guys down today. And then
- 26:11Speaker 3: also Bryce Harper was quoted in this story talking about
- 26:14Speaker 3: how fans really went after him right away. They were
- 26:16Speaker 3: playing the tribute video. I didn't remember this, but they
- 26:19Speaker 3: were booing during that like some guys get the ultimate respect.
- 26:21Speaker 3: And then Harper was saying how the mayor was calling
- 26:25Speaker 3: him Benedict Arnold. So add all of that up, Kip,
- 26:28Speaker 3: what have you seen?
- 26:31Speaker 2: There's just speaking from personal experience, there's no doubt you
- 26:34Speaker 2: go back and you want to kind of show them
- 26:36Speaker 2: what they're missing or something. It's not even if it
- 26:39Speaker 2: was a bad parting of ways or a good one.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I think just when you move on and your team
- 26:44Speaker 2: doesn't resign you or anything of that nature, anytime you
- 26:47Speaker 2: come back there you're like you should have resigned it,
- 26:49Speaker 2: Like it's just that's just the competitor in every baseball player.
- 26:52Speaker 2: They want that. I think it was bad that Baltimore
- 26:55Speaker 2: didn't give Goslin even like it doesn't take much for
- 26:59Speaker 2: media or or whoever to put up like it's just
- 27:01Speaker 2: thanks Kevin, like on the scoreboard for ten seconds. You
- 27:04Speaker 2: don't have to show a full video or anything like that.
- 27:07Speaker 2: But to not acknowledge that I think it was a
- 27:10Speaker 2: little wrong. It does make it hard for the guys
- 27:14Speaker 2: who have the longer ten years at places to go back.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I think you kind of bury that. I wouldn't call
- 27:23Speaker 2: it hatred, but you bury that kind of just frustration
- 27:27Speaker 2: with not being back there, and you worry about your
- 27:29Speaker 2: new team, and you start making your new friends and
- 27:31Speaker 2: your new teammates, and you get happy, and it's just
- 27:34Speaker 2: like it just hits you in the face again right
- 27:35Speaker 2: when you see everybody again, and you're like, that's what
- 27:39Speaker 2: everything kind of comes rushing back, and all the memories,
- 27:41Speaker 2: and so it's nice just to get the it's all
- 27:43Speaker 2: about the first game. After that, it doesn't matter too much,
- 27:46Speaker 2: but that first game with the hat tip is always fun,
- 27:48Speaker 2: and it's kind of way you can say thank you
- 27:50Speaker 2: back to the fans for supporting you. But I always
- 27:53Speaker 2: looked at it a little bit like I wasn't mad
- 27:56Speaker 2: at the team, the teammates or anything like that, because
- 27:58Speaker 2: I had no reason to be. But it's like you
- 27:59Speaker 2: kind of a more looking up at the ownership boxes
- 28:03Speaker 2: and management boxes more than the teammates of what your
- 28:05Speaker 2: frustration is.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I always liked it when, you know, you go back
- 28:09Speaker 4: with the teammate and you'd see the you'd see the
- 28:12Speaker 4: highlight film or whatever, the celebrating them, and then when
- 28:17Speaker 4: they get their first hit, they start booing them, and
- 28:19Speaker 4: it's it's an out.
- 28:20Speaker 2: They cheer them, like, you know what. I like that.
- 28:24Speaker 4: That's a fan interaction thing and you can handle it.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Like what why would they boo me every sing? I
- 28:30Speaker 4: gave them so many of my good years? No, like, like,
- 28:33Speaker 4: nobody gets a better better reception than Lorenzo Kaine. Lorenzo
- 28:39Speaker 4: Caine would would sit in a dugout with the with
- 28:42Speaker 4: the Brewers. He'd be like, wee said, Royal's got my
- 28:46Speaker 4: good years.
- 28:47Speaker 2: He said, but.
- 28:49Speaker 4: He said, Milwaukee they're celebrating me. Or he said, he said,
- 28:54Speaker 4: Milwaukee showed me some love. That's what they do. They
- 28:57Speaker 4: showed me love.
- 28:57Speaker 2: But man, the Royals got them good years.
- 29:00Speaker 4: So it's you know, it's it's a very few people
- 29:03Speaker 4: leave because you know what, it's not a good fit
- 29:06Speaker 4: for me. I had a great run, and the team's like,
- 29:08Speaker 4: you're right, we want the best for you wherever you go.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Usually it's like I kind of would like to stay there.
- 29:13Speaker 4: My teammates are still there. I don't want to get traded,
- 29:16Speaker 4: but we sucked, so they traded me. Now I'm not
- 29:18Speaker 4: going to go back in free agency and that and
- 29:20Speaker 4: that's the tough part about it. That's what is so
- 29:22Speaker 4: cool about what Buckston's doing in Minnesota.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it really does. It really does. And how you
- 29:28Speaker 2: part ways too. If you were if you were traded
- 29:32Speaker 2: when you guys, when you were doing well and your
- 29:33Speaker 2: team wasn't doing well or something like that, Like you
- 29:35Speaker 2: have nothing to apologize for. The fans really have nothing
- 29:40Speaker 2: to boo you for. Like you'll see a lot more
- 29:42Speaker 2: positive interactions, a lot more applause, and like really rarely
- 29:45Speaker 2: any booze. But if you chose between going somewhere else
- 29:48Speaker 2: or staying and you went somewhere else, then you're gonna
- 29:50Speaker 2: hear more booze.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Right if you if you did a live broadcast called
- 29:54Speaker 3: the Decision.
- 29:55Speaker 1: And you chose your spot, then yeah, that.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Might that might hurt a little bit. But the thing is,
- 30:00Speaker 3: I mean we often don't know what goes on behind
- 30:02Speaker 3: the scenes. I'm just gonna use this might not be
- 30:05Speaker 3: the cleanest example, but from Berbaldez, who's now faced his
- 30:08Speaker 3: former team a couple of times in the past few weeks.
- 30:10Speaker 3: But the first time when the media was talking to
- 30:12Speaker 3: him and all that and they're asking him about Houston,
- 30:15Speaker 3: he was like, no offer, no combo, no offer, right,
- 30:18Speaker 3: like nothing so and he was part of world Series
- 30:20Speaker 3: winning teams and all that, and that's fine, that's their right.
- 30:22Speaker 3: But to me, if I'm a fan of the Astros,
- 30:25Speaker 3: whatever you think of him, you definitely can't fault him.
- 30:28Speaker 3: You should be appreciative of they didn't get You didn't
- 30:33Speaker 3: get an invite, No invite, right, Like, I'm sure they
- 30:35Speaker 3: would have done yeah.
- 30:39Speaker 1: And they didn't.
- 30:39Speaker 3: But I'm just saying, like, if you're a fan, you
- 30:41Speaker 3: need to realize sometimes a player can't go somewhere unless
- 30:46Speaker 3: the team wants him to come back. He needs to
- 30:48Speaker 3: receive an offer to come back.
- 30:50Speaker 2: And I'll even extend it too. They shouldn't be buoying
- 30:52Speaker 2: him for that first start back or that first series back.
- 30:55Speaker 2: You you celebrate them, cheer them, and enjoy the moments
- 30:59Speaker 2: that you guys all shared together as a franchise and
- 31:02Speaker 2: as fans. The second series, he comes back fair game,
- 31:06Speaker 2: he's no longer on your team anymore, Like you're pubbim right,
- 31:10Speaker 2: That's just how I feel, kind of like you're like,
- 31:12Speaker 2: that's then then you're fans of the former team and
- 31:15Speaker 2: you're not fans of his team, his new team anymore.
- 31:16Speaker 2: You're allowed to boo him no matter what.
- 31:19Speaker 4: The stadium normally the people the loudest are the minority,
- 31:23Speaker 4: Like the minority people don't know what happened with Boba Schett,
- 31:28Speaker 4: and so they're sitting there, they're gonna you know, they
- 31:31Speaker 4: would boo this guy, or maybe they didn't boo it
- 31:33Speaker 4: in the stadium as much as on social media, like
- 31:37Speaker 4: how could this guy leave?
- 31:38Speaker 2: How could this guy?
- 31:39Speaker 4: Like wait a minute, during the time that bo was there,
- 31:42Speaker 4: go look what he did. He was drafted by them.
- 31:45Speaker 4: He wanted to stay with the Jays. They gave a
- 31:48Speaker 4: lot of money to Vladimir Guerrero. The organization made the choice.
- 31:52Speaker 4: He didn't go chasing dollars. He went to free agency
- 31:57Speaker 4: like everybody else. And if the Blue Jays, and more
- 32:00Speaker 4: so Blue Jays fans, have some ire that they want
- 32:03Speaker 4: to shed to somebody.
- 32:05Speaker 2: It should be to the front office, It should be
- 32:07Speaker 2: to ownership.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Whoever made the decision to say we're not going after Bo,
- 32:11Speaker 4: We're gonna go after Vlad or if they made an offer, Hey,
- 32:15Speaker 4: you know what, you know this was the offer that
- 32:17Speaker 4: was made and you know that's that's not on What
- 32:20Speaker 4: do you what do you want Bo to do? Fans
- 32:23Speaker 4: who say, oh, he went and chased the money, what
- 32:25Speaker 4: do you want Bo to do? What is the what
- 32:27Speaker 4: is the choice just to stay? Because he should stay
- 32:32Speaker 4: because you like him as a player.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Yeah, you should play for free, Kratz.
- 32:37Speaker 2: I mean that's to me.
- 32:38Speaker 4: If you're gonna boo about it or write about it
- 32:40Speaker 4: or tweet about it and be like this guy, he
- 32:42Speaker 4: just chased his money. What's the other option? What should
- 32:45Speaker 4: he have done? Come back for a single year? I mean,
- 32:49Speaker 4: what is he getting like forty million dollars in New York?
- 32:51Speaker 2: How what?
- 32:52Speaker 4: Of course, like you gotta you gotta be in the
- 32:55Speaker 4: same category, the same realm.
- 32:59Speaker 2: You brought up Another good point though, too, do not
- 33:01Speaker 2: confuse Twitter fans with stadium fans. Yeah, yeah, because the
- 33:07Speaker 2: loudest ones in the stadium mean the most to you.
- 33:09Speaker 2: The loudest ones on Twitter mean the least to you.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I think those are the ones who can They can
- 33:13Speaker 2: hijack the conversation and just completely turn it into something
- 33:17Speaker 2: the wrong way, or paint the picture of a player
- 33:20Speaker 2: completely wrong light because maybe they had a personal event
- 33:23Speaker 2: at or they had a bad interaction with him, or
- 33:26Speaker 2: he didn't sign their card one time and something like that,
- 33:28Speaker 2: and now they dog him on Twitter. They steal the conversation.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Everyone that reads, maybe the team's forum or something like that, things, well,
- 33:36Speaker 2: this guy's a bad person, and he's like, No, go
- 33:38Speaker 2: to the stadium where a guy plays his ass off
- 33:41Speaker 2: all the time and fans love him. It's completely different.
- 33:43Speaker 2: So that's a very good point. Cratzy.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Often, actually, if you're trying to get the pulse, even
- 33:47Speaker 3: just from any kind of social media platforms, Twitter is
- 33:50Speaker 3: probably the worst in that category because it's ninety eight
- 33:53Speaker 3: percent negative.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I like it.
- 33:54Speaker 3: I love getting news on there and reading stuff. But
- 33:56Speaker 3: I'm just saying, like, even for me, right with our
- 33:58Speaker 3: whole network of shows on FT, I check Twitter comments
- 34:02Speaker 3: the least. I check YouTube comments the most.
- 34:04Speaker 1: I think there's a.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Much more reason there on average, Right, you're gonna have
- 34:09Speaker 3: people on there that I feel like relate more to
- 34:11Speaker 3: the fan experience of what you're talking about, Kip. You'll
- 34:13Speaker 3: get positive, you'll get negative, you get it between. A
- 34:15Speaker 3: lot of times, Twitter is just like who can make
- 34:17Speaker 3: the meanest comment and then get engagement off of that.
- 34:19Speaker 3: So yeah, I don't think that's the best place to
- 34:22Speaker 3: check them with you there if you're trying to see
- 34:24Speaker 3: how a player is being received.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Again, good article though, check it out. It's by Mitch Bannon.
- 34:29Speaker 3: Hey, the Astros did lose Jeremy Pana mild left Castra
- 34:32Speaker 3: and headed to the IL should be a minimum stint,
- 34:35Speaker 3: according to Joe A Spota. Sorry, I'm not saying that based.
- 34:39Speaker 2: On anything I know about doubt.
- 34:41Speaker 3: I'm just like, how many freaking times does someone have
- 34:44Speaker 3: to downplay a calf injury and then the player misses
- 34:47Speaker 3: more time? It just it happens all the time. It's
- 34:49Speaker 3: the same skit over and over again. It's happened multiple
- 34:51Speaker 3: times this year, Kip. I remember learning about it from
- 34:54Speaker 3: Josh Donaldson like ten twelve years ago, because you're like, oh,
- 34:57Speaker 3: big tough, Josh Donaldson, he'll be back in five minutes,
- 34:59Speaker 3: and then calf was having him nuts.
- 35:00Speaker 1: It's it's always the same scat.
- 35:02Speaker 3: I'm not saying that Pinya won't miss the minimum time,
- 35:04Speaker 3: but the chances are he'll miss a little bit more
- 35:06Speaker 3: than that, or he'll come back too soon and then
- 35:08Speaker 3: the calf will bark again.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Well, I mentioned em earlier that I went on the
- 35:11Speaker 2: golf trip. Lonnie Chisenall used to have a lot of
- 35:13Speaker 2: calf problems. I had one before. Calves obliques probably could
- 35:19Speaker 2: throw hamstrings in there too at something of those don't
- 35:21Speaker 2: just heal up and go away. It's like not only
- 35:24Speaker 2: do like they need time to rest, They need time
- 35:28Speaker 2: to restrengthen they need time for you to have confidence
- 35:30Speaker 2: in again, and then they still might not be ready
- 35:32Speaker 2: to play on because it's still like it just they
- 35:34Speaker 2: become more susceptible to being pulled or strained again just
- 35:38Speaker 2: by where they're located, just by the tens that are
- 35:40Speaker 2: in them. So there's very specific. But calfs are not
- 35:42Speaker 2: fun at all. And I've done it before and there
- 35:46Speaker 2: is no mild stint on there for calf strain that
- 35:49Speaker 2: those don't go together.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 35:52Speaker 3: That's why I saw that Kratz and I was like,
- 35:54Speaker 3: we have to mention this biggus. Jeremy pin is one
- 35:56Speaker 3: of their best players, and you can't expect to mabe
- 35:58Speaker 3: back in five minutes.
- 36:00Speaker 4: Or leg injuries that heal quickly when you're on the Astros.
- 36:04Speaker 4: I mean, they've been a minute about leg injuries that
- 36:07Speaker 4: take Forever Tucker two years ago.
- 36:10Speaker 2: You'red on last year. I get it they were foul balls, but.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Yeah, things can appear NBD and then be much more serious.
- 36:21Speaker 3: All right, So Dave Roberts talking about how Tyler last
- 36:25Speaker 3: now has resumed a throwing progression and that they're still
- 36:28Speaker 3: being very cautious right now to avoid any more stepbacks.
- 36:31Speaker 3: So this was late on what's today Tuesday, so late
- 36:35Speaker 3: on Monday with the update there. And by the way,
- 36:38Speaker 3: the Dodgers beat up the A's with an O tiny laser.
- 36:41Speaker 3: He's got a nice little home run binge going on
- 36:43Speaker 3: right now that is going under the radar outside of LA.
- 36:47Speaker 3: I think eight homers in his last nineteen games. It's
- 36:48Speaker 3: good for like almost a homer every other game right now.
- 36:51Speaker 3: He's pretty good at ball. But Kip Glass now Snell
- 36:55Speaker 3: number one starters, and it can be frustrating for Dodger fans.
- 36:59Speaker 3: But if they get to the playoffs with a bye,
- 37:02Speaker 3: preferably for their cause, and then those guys are pitching
- 37:04Speaker 3: in the playoffs. Yeah, exactly like they Yeah, I mean
- 37:07Speaker 3: those two might log like forty to fifty innings for
- 37:10Speaker 3: the entire season, but then enter October with their same
- 37:14Speaker 3: stuff and then just be freaking firing and they can
- 37:17Speaker 3: do that.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Yeah. You will not hear me feel bad for Dodgers
- 37:22Speaker 2: fans at any point in time of any of these broadcasts.
- 37:25Speaker 2: But that's I mean, that's that's the margin for air
- 37:32Speaker 2: that they have with this lineup, with this team that
- 37:37Speaker 2: they put together, is that they can stay in first
- 37:39Speaker 2: place for so long. They could out hit people, they
- 37:41Speaker 2: could beat in so many different ways that they don't
- 37:44Speaker 2: even need these guys to be there, and then they
- 37:46Speaker 2: just need them to rest up, get healthy, and be
- 37:49Speaker 2: mid season form by the time for playoffs. So you're
- 37:51Speaker 2: at your peak going into the postseason.
- 37:54Speaker 6: Now.
- 37:54Speaker 2: It's just it's weird how even like them getting injured
- 37:57Speaker 2: works out in their favor almost, so it's is kind
- 38:00Speaker 2: of it's it's the Dodgers right now, man.
- 38:04Speaker 3: Right, you're ramping them up for i mean second half
- 38:08Speaker 3: at some point.
- 38:10Speaker 2: The fact, what's their lead in their division right now.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I had it up. I just closed that.
- 38:18Speaker 1: It's good. It's not like they've run away with it yet.
- 38:22Speaker 1: But they're they're but.
- 38:24Speaker 2: They're they're well onto their way to winning the developed
- 38:28Speaker 2: the the vision again.
- 38:30Speaker 1: Oh it's more than I even felt. Yeah, we never there.
- 38:34Speaker 3: They're running away, kid. I was gonna say, like, it's
- 38:37Speaker 3: like six seven game, you know.
- 38:39Speaker 2: It's it's such a luxury to be able to not
- 38:41Speaker 2: rush guys back through by injuries because they know that
- 38:46Speaker 2: these guys have been playing in the postseasons and have
- 38:49Speaker 2: been playing longer season seasons than everyone else, so their
- 38:51Speaker 2: bodies have taken a little bit more told But like
- 38:53Speaker 2: the fact that you can rest them, rest while they're
- 38:55Speaker 2: rehabing and get them to be ready for the postseason?
- 38:59Speaker 2: Is agata so unfair? Room? Yeah? Sorry Dodger's ban.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Hey, this is exciting. John Lester remember him.
- 39:24Speaker 3: He is a pretty big deal in Chicago and he
- 39:26Speaker 3: is going to be a regular guest on North Side
- 39:29Speaker 3: Territory Our Cup show. So it will now be Sad Sharma,
- 39:33Speaker 3: Patrick Mooney an occasional John Lester appearances. A first episode
- 39:37Speaker 3: with Lester is now available wherever you get your pods
- 39:40Speaker 3: along with the YouTube channel. So even if you're not
- 39:43Speaker 3: a Cubs fan, I mean, John Lester has impacted every
- 39:46Speaker 3: team in some way in baseball.
- 39:47Speaker 1: So, Kip, do you know him? Have you come across
- 39:50Speaker 1: him at all?
- 39:51Speaker 2: We played together in twenty twenty. He was He's awesome.
- 39:54Speaker 2: I'm actually looking down for my office at my wine wall.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Just told him I was remodeling my place and he
- 40:00Speaker 2: had some great wines and I think a whole seller
- 40:02Speaker 2: back at his home in Georgia maybe and didn't ask
- 40:06Speaker 2: for any just but a box of twelve high end
- 40:09Speaker 2: wines showed up in my house saying congrats on the
- 40:12Speaker 2: wine wall, or just like just congrats on the wine wall,
- 40:14Speaker 2: or just here. They hope these to get you started.
- 40:16Speaker 2: And so I actually still have one of the bottles
- 40:18Speaker 2: in there. I just have Captain having Touch, just out
- 40:20Speaker 2: of a because I really liked it and didn't want
- 40:22Speaker 2: to waste it. But no, he was like that. He's
- 40:24Speaker 2: such a good guy and a damn good picture. For
- 40:27Speaker 2: a long time.
- 40:29Speaker 4: You know, had one bottle left. What happened to the
- 40:31Speaker 4: other eleven?
- 40:33Speaker 2: I mean it was six years ago.
- 40:35Speaker 4: Oh, I thought it was just after your renovations of
- 40:38Speaker 4: your your after you had the thing happened in the basement,
- 40:41Speaker 4: because I was.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Like, that, wasn't that long ago that you got that fixed?
- 40:45Speaker 2: Oh the basement, not those renovations. Yeah, my basement flooded, correct, No,
- 40:50Speaker 2: six years ago, gotcha. Also, I probably had eleven bottles
- 40:54Speaker 2: since those renovations downstairs.
- 40:55Speaker 1: But that's fine.
- 40:57Speaker 3: That's also fair, like six years Yeah, that's that's acceptable.
- 41:02Speaker 3: But yeah, he has actually known, at least you know,
- 41:05Speaker 3: in circles in the game, is one of the more
- 41:08Speaker 3: generous players too. I mean he made a ton of money,
- 41:10Speaker 3: and I mean you guys have seen it. Some players
- 41:12Speaker 3: definitely like make sure that they take care of guys,
- 41:15Speaker 3: the rookies, the dinners, the whole deal, right, And then
- 41:19Speaker 3: there's still some alligator arms for dudes who made way
- 41:21Speaker 3: too much money to be keeping their arms in their pockets.
- 41:24Speaker 1: And John Lester is the opposite of that.
- 41:26Speaker 2: You said it.
- 41:28Speaker 3: Mm hmmm, Oh, I'm sure crats like you've been to
- 41:32Speaker 3: early early years of krats where it's like you just
- 41:34Speaker 3: cracked the bigs in your thirties and you're out of
- 41:37Speaker 3: dinner and some dude's been a.
- 41:38Speaker 4: Whole time, No, the whole time I'm always I'm always
- 41:42Speaker 4: waiting and don't let me. Especially at the end of
- 41:44Speaker 4: my career, I was always waiting for free, free meals.
- 41:46Speaker 4: I feel like backup catchers and Loogi's left handed, left
- 41:51Speaker 4: handed guys in the pen, they're always looking for free,
- 41:53Speaker 4: free meals because they're the ones that are going to
- 41:55Speaker 4: get fired the next day. And if you're cheap and
- 41:58Speaker 4: you make one of those dudes pay for taxi or anything,
- 42:01Speaker 4: oh boy, I'm getting on that. Mic, I'm gonna tell
- 42:04Speaker 4: everybody about it. You're a good hitter, got them short arms.
- 42:08Speaker 4: I guess that's how you can get to a lot
- 42:09Speaker 4: of heaters and not to your wallet.
- 42:15Speaker 1: That's good.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Hey, I'm sure some guys sometimes maybe maybe crats. Making
- 42:20Speaker 3: fun of them for you know, every bus ride change
- 42:22Speaker 3: them made them more generous human beings.
- 42:25Speaker 4: It's part of being Yeah, it's a good teammate, but
- 42:28Speaker 4: it's also part of like who took care of you?
- 42:32Speaker 4: You need to be able to take care of those guys,
- 42:34Speaker 4: like understand.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Yeah, like you could say I earned my fifty million dollars.
- 42:40Speaker 4: Yeah, we get that, we get that, but it's all
- 42:44Speaker 4: it's all kind of part of it, Like it's all
- 42:45Speaker 4: part of it, like if you're if you're out with
- 42:46Speaker 4: a minor leaguer, you can't.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Be like, yeah, you want to split that taxi, but
- 42:53Speaker 2: now I'll walk. I'm fine.
- 42:56Speaker 3: So we'll just do a mini verbal what's the beef.
- 42:59Speaker 3: I'll do the intro the beef. Josh Naylor and Austin Hedges,
- 43:02Speaker 3: these guys going back and forth, two very vocal dudes
- 43:05Speaker 3: who actually kept seem very different.
- 43:09Speaker 1: To say it again, they seem like very different personally,
- 43:12Speaker 1: I think, I.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Mean, listen, I think it's one of those ones. We
- 43:14Speaker 2: talked about Naylor earlier with UH with Ryan Davish, and
- 43:18Speaker 2: he's one of those guys that will get on your
- 43:21Speaker 2: nerves if he's not on your team. I think he
- 43:23Speaker 2: he approaches the game he's not. He kind of makes
- 43:26Speaker 2: you a little bit uncomfortable because he just doesn't have
- 43:28Speaker 2: the same conversations with the same greetings every time you
- 43:30Speaker 2: come up to him or talk to them, and then
- 43:32Speaker 2: they on the contrary, Hedges is known to be a
- 43:35Speaker 2: goofster and like one of the more likable guys around
- 43:38Speaker 2: the league and just more fun to be around and
- 43:39Speaker 2: in a good mood all every day. That being said,
- 43:44Speaker 2: it's that's that's that that seems more personal than just
- 43:49Speaker 2: generic smack talk to me crazy? Would you not say
- 43:51Speaker 2: that that? I think that's like that came out like
- 43:54Speaker 2: that was so it was being held on to for
- 43:56Speaker 2: a little bit or something. So I don't know, yeah, yeah,
- 44:00Speaker 2: I don't think that's That's not just something you know,
- 44:02Speaker 2: there's other ways to attack people or to verbally like
- 44:05Speaker 2: get into it with a former teammate than than going
- 44:07Speaker 2: to like, hey, by the way, nobody likes you here,
- 44:10Speaker 2: nobody likes him. Like that's that's trying. That's trying. That's
- 44:13Speaker 2: trying to shoot a dagger, but that also is having
- 44:17Speaker 2: that dagger.
- 44:19Speaker 4: That is Yeah, I mean I don't feel like I
- 44:21Speaker 4: don't feel like hedge you would say that just because
- 44:23Speaker 4: he like like trying to make something up, so there
- 44:26Speaker 4: has to be something there. But it also kind of
- 44:29Speaker 4: felt like it was one of those things where you're like,
- 44:31Speaker 4: hey man, you're bald, hey man, you're.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Fat, hey man, everybody hates you.
- 44:36Speaker 4: And I was like, like, it's just.
- 44:39Speaker 2: Like totally like we're shooting barbs.
- 44:42Speaker 4: It's like you know that that one dude gets a
- 44:44Speaker 4: little drunk and then all of a sudden you're just like, yeah,
- 44:47Speaker 4: well I heard about your girlfriend.
- 44:49Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, yeah, just like a line stepper that was.
- 44:52Speaker 2: So you have that as being like the line stepper,
- 44:54Speaker 2: like the one kind of going a little too far or.
- 44:59Speaker 4: I don't see that with I don't see that as
- 45:01Speaker 4: something Heggy would do.
- 45:03Speaker 2: So it has to come. It has to That's why
- 45:06Speaker 2: I'm it seems like there's something there. Yeah, there's definitely
- 45:10Speaker 2: something there.
- 45:11Speaker 4: I'm intrigued to know about it.
- 45:15Speaker 2: I'm curious as well, I kind of I'm going to
- 45:17Speaker 2: be doing radio for Cleveland down in Miami for a
- 45:21Speaker 2: good series in early July, so I'm going to see
- 45:23Speaker 2: if I can talk to him. I want to ask
- 45:24Speaker 2: him about it, and I'll report back if I can.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Yes, please, While we're on this stone Garrett, who is
- 45:31Speaker 3: a former Big leader, probably one of the best ops pluses.
- 45:35Speaker 1: For a dude who barely played in the big leagues.
- 45:36Speaker 3: His career ops pluses I think it was one thirty,
- 45:40Speaker 3: one thirty, and he like he barely got a chance.
- 45:43Speaker 3: I know there's some injuries and some in effect whatever.
- 45:45Speaker 3: He didn't have great minor league numbers, I guess at
- 45:47Speaker 3: times to get called back up.
- 45:48Speaker 1: But in three hundred something at Beats.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Anyway, played a few years parts of a few years
- 45:52Speaker 3: in the big leagues, totally about one hundred games. He
- 45:55Speaker 3: commented on Instagram and said, Josh Naylor like to play
- 45:59Speaker 3: stupid games. Dude would come into our apartment we were
- 46:01Speaker 3: neighbors with aerosol and lighters multiple times. That wasn't his
- 46:05Speaker 3: first time in our apartment with a butcher's knife. The
- 46:07Speaker 3: guy hid in my closet waiting for me to get home.
- 46:09Speaker 3: When I went to hang my shirt up, he jumped
- 46:11Speaker 3: out with a knife, pointed at me, caught my thumb,
- 46:13Speaker 3: sliced it wide open, went to the er, waits for
- 46:15Speaker 3: me when I get back. First question is are you
- 46:17Speaker 3: going to press charges next day? Coaches team meetings saying
- 46:19Speaker 3: front office wants to keep it hush hush, and he said, lma,
- 46:23Speaker 3: I laughing my ass off. I get surgery. He cut
- 46:25Speaker 3: my nerve, still can't feel my right thumb. He got
- 46:27Speaker 3: suspended for one gamel. Two weeks later, he goes to
- 46:30Speaker 3: the Future's Game, gets traded. He is the most psychotic
- 46:32Speaker 3: person I've ever met in my life.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Hey say, with your chest that's coming out, that's not
- 46:41Speaker 2: holding back. I like that, but like, hey, you know
- 46:44Speaker 2: what rubs me the wrong way on that everything that
- 46:46Speaker 2: he said, not well, jumping out at a teammate with
- 46:48Speaker 2: a knife is already strike one. But the first question
- 46:52Speaker 2: back is are you going to press charges? Not are
- 46:55Speaker 2: you okay? Not anything like it's cause it's that's just
- 46:58Speaker 2: the brain works differently. I think heads about stuff, so
- 47:03Speaker 2: and that could be the second question. I don't know,
- 47:05Speaker 2: that's just weird stuff to me. That's saying not all
- 47:08Speaker 2: there at times, Yeah, and sometimes the only way to
- 47:11Speaker 2: work for people.
- 47:12Speaker 3: Though sometimes that works for people, you guys know, like
- 47:16Speaker 3: and I think it's gotten a little more team, but
- 47:17Speaker 3: there are a lot of crazy kids that played baseball
- 47:20Speaker 3: that were very good. Like my quick story in the
- 47:23Speaker 3: Ape League broadcasting and I lived with a number of
- 47:25Speaker 3: players and like I just remembered like i'd go home
- 47:27Speaker 3: from the game. I'd get back later than the players
- 47:30Speaker 3: and you know'd be like, all right, let's go out,
- 47:32Speaker 3: and they'd be like, let's go out, or we can
- 47:34Speaker 3: make homemade tasers and tase each other and I'm like, no,
- 47:37Speaker 3: let's let's go out, Like this is weird, and then
- 47:40Speaker 3: they chose to Yes, they would do stuff like that
- 47:43Speaker 3: krats and this is like five guys that you know
- 47:45Speaker 3: and one or two made the big leagues, and you're
- 47:47Speaker 3: just like, all right, these twenty year olds are freaking crazy.
- 47:49Speaker 1: I just want to like go.
- 47:51Speaker 2: You know, we call those all those guys closers and
- 47:55Speaker 2: relief pictures and left.
- 47:59Speaker 1: Left there were some those mixed in. Yes, so there's
- 48:02Speaker 1: story time for you.
- 48:04Speaker 2: That stuff is. That stuff is like lower level stuff.
- 48:07Speaker 4: I don't know how much how many stories like that
- 48:10Speaker 4: Kip has, but those stories like start the thin out
- 48:13Speaker 4: once you start getting upper, you know, towards like the
- 48:17Speaker 4: futures game time of life like that that Naylor was
- 48:21Speaker 4: getting in there the short season low way, there's nothing
- 48:25Speaker 4: else to do but make tasers.
- 48:30Speaker 2: As a get higher, you start having more productive days off. Yeah,
- 48:35Speaker 2: I never had. I never had.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I never had hair spray to light on fire, so
- 48:41Speaker 4: for shampoo before right.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Some get married at twenty and have a kid that
- 48:48Speaker 3: keeps them a little distracted. Others make tasers and have
- 48:52Speaker 3: aerosol fires going on.
- 48:54Speaker 7: So yeah, there's still Jason Goodness autographed in the car
- 49:00Speaker 7: bit of a dorm room at Kentucky and the k
- 49:02Speaker 7: One Towers went aerosol in so I used to be
- 49:06Speaker 7: a little bit of that guy, never stabbed anyone, never jeted.
- 49:12Speaker 2: Put that on the rest of the line somewhere
