- 0:01Jennifer Davis: Welcome to The Best of Redmond.
- 0:03Jennifer Davis: I'm Jennifer Davis
- 0:04Dan Schulz: And I'm Dan Schultz, and this is Redmond's twice weekly newsletter and podcast about all of the amazing things happening right here in and around Redmond for the next seven days jennifer, what is the cool thing happening this week?
- 0:19Jennifer Davis: Well, tomorrow night, June 24th at 6:30, local author Joseph Eckert will be at Brick and Mortar Books celebrating the release of his debut novel, The Traveler.
- 0:32Jennifer Davis: The story follows a guy who suddenly starts jumping forward through time every morning, watching days and eventually years disappear in the blink of an eye while his family tries to figure out what's happening.
- 0:44Jennifer Davis: This is exactly the kind of event independent bookstores do so well.
- 0:49Jennifer Davis: You get to meet the author, hear where the idea came from, and support a local business at the same time.
- 0:56Jennifer Davis: If you're into science fiction, time travel stories, or just want an excuse to wander through a bookstore, this one looks worth checking out
- 1:06Dan Schulz: Tonight, June 23rd from 6:30 to 9:00, the Redmond Senior and Community Center is hosting a community match day party with snacks, family activities, and plenty of room for kids to run around.
- 1:20Dan Schulz: Yes, there's a soccer match on the screen, but the bigger draw here is the chance to spend a summer evening hanging out with neighbors.
- 1:28Dan Schulz: They're expecting a great turnout and you'll have youth soccer activities running alongside the event, so it'll be really fun.
- 1:35Dan Schulz: Throw on something red, white, and blue and bring the family.
- 1:39Dan Schulz: Sometimes the best local events are really just excuses to get people together.
- 1:46Jennifer Davis: Tomorrow, June 24th, from 11 to 2, Pickles Playland is hosting Video Game Day for dogs attending daycare.
- 1:55Dan Schulz: That's great because my dogs are so sick of not having video games to
- 2:00Jennifer Davis: Oh my God,
- 2:01Dan Schulz: this mean?
- 2:02Jennifer Davis: how do they hold the controllers with their little paws?
- 2:05Dan Schulz: They, they, like how, uh, Foxy holds his pepperoni, like a squirrel holding a stick
- 2:14Jennifer Davis: only in Redmond could a dog daycare calendar include something that sounds like it belongs at Nintendo headquarters.
- 2:21Jennifer Davis: The event is limited to dogs already participating in daycare, boarding, or grooming services, and the Pickles crew handles all the themed fun behind the scenes.
- 2:30Jennifer Davis: If your dog is already scheduled to be there, they'll probably have a better Wednesday than most people sitting in meetings
- 2:40Dan Schulz: Well, it's Tuesday, and you know what that means.
- 2:43Dan Schulz: Every Tuesday, you've got a major decision to make.
- 2:46Dan Schulz: You could go grab some boring lunch, or you can head on over to La Tia Angelina for their legendary Taco Tuesday deal.
- 2:54Dan Schulz: We're talking $1.50 tacos made with authentic recipes straight from Jalisco, Mexico.
- 3:00Dan Schulz: This isn't some chain restaurant trying to do Mexican food.
- 3:04Dan Schulz: This is a real family operation that's been perfecting their craft for five years.
- 3:09Dan Schulz: The husband and wife team even have their five kids helping out sometimes..., you'll find their food truck parked behind the bus stop near the QFC in Bellevue right next to the Tikka Masala restaurant.
- 3:21Dan Schulz: They offer student discounts too if you're at the Bellevue College.
- 3:25Dan Schulz: These people really care about their community, and it shows with every single taco they make.
- 3:31Dan Schulz: And this message brought to you by our friends at La Tia Angelina food truck.
- 3:37Jennifer Davis: The Rails to Repeats challenge continues through June 30th along the Redmond Central Connector, giving walkers, runners, and cyclists one more reason to get outside before the month wraps up.
- 3:50Jennifer Davis: Participants can complete the designated Eastrail segment as many times as they want, with prizes going to the people who log the most laps.
- 3:58Jennifer Davis: The entry fee helps support Eastrail partners and future trail improvements.
- 4:04Jennifer Davis: Whether you're training for something or just trying to spend less time staring at a screen, this is a pretty good excuse to hit the trail
- 4:13Dan Schulz: Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 4:23Dan Schulz: Jennifer, I'm gonna ask you the question, and everyone listening can play along at home.
- 4:26Dan Schulz: Are you ready for your question?
- 4:29Jennifer Davis: Yes, I'm all ready
- 4:31Dan Schulz: The Cleese Mansion at Marymoor Park had many unusual features.
- 4:36Dan Schulz: Which of these did it actually have?
- 4:39Dan Schulz: A, roaming peacocks and a Dutch windmill.
- 4:43Dan Schulz: B, an indoor bowling alley.
- 4:46Dan Schulz: C, a moat with alligators.
- 4:50Dan Schulz: D, a private zoo with elephants.
- 4:53Dan Schulz: And your timer starts now
- 4:57Jennifer Davis: I feel very confident that it's gotta be roaming peacocks and a Dutch windmill because that seems like a common thing for parks to have for some reason.
- 5:06Jennifer Davis: So I'm gonna have to go with Dutch windmill and peacocks...
- 5:15Dan Schulz: Well, Jennifer, I, I hate to say it, um, it was, uh, alligator in the moat.
- 5:21Jennifer Davis: No
- 5:22Dan Schulz: I know I'm kidding.
- 5:23Dan Schulz: That would happen in Florida.
- 5:24Dan Schulz: If we were doing best of Florida, I guarantee there are at least 25 parks in Florida that have a moat with alligators in it.
- 5:33Dan Schulz: The answer is, in fact, A, roaming peacocks and a Dutch windmill.
- 5:38Dan Schulz: Willowmore Farm had 28 buildings, roaming peacocks, a functional Dutch windmill, a tree house in a maple tree, boathouses, greenhouses, and even a narrow gauge railroad in a barnyard used to haul grain.
- 5:52Dan Schulz: It was basically a fantasy estate sitting right here in Redmond, and you can still visit the mansion at Marymoor Park today
- 6:09Jennifer Davis: Word is of ramen and natural wine bar, yes, that combination is being quietly developed by a pair of Seattle restaurant veterans who've been looking at a downtown Redmond space.
- 6:21Jennifer Davis: What we don't know is where exactly it would go, or whether a lease has actually been signed, or how far along the project might be.
- 6:30Jennifer Davis: We also don't know if the concept stays exactly the same once plans become public.
- 6:35Jennifer Davis: So the question is simple: Where do you think it'll end up?
- 6:38Jennifer Davis: If you've got a guess or have heard something, head on over to our Facebook page and drop it in the Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses post.
- 6:47Dan Schulz: You know, wine and ramen are a very good combination
- 6:50Jennifer Davis: I couldn't e- I honestly can't imagine that, but, you know, I, I'm o- I'm open to new experiences
- 7:01Dan Schulz: Here's something most homeowners don't think about.
- 7:03Dan Schulz: You could have a water leak right now and not even know it.
- 7:07Dan Schulz: Underground leaks don't show up like burst pipes.
- 7:10Dan Schulz: There's no water on the floor.
- 7:11Dan Schulz: Your water bill just quietly creeps up month after month until one day you're paying double and wondering what happened.
- 7:18Dan Schulz: Simply Leak Detection finds those leaks without tearing up your yard.
- 7:23Dan Schulz: They use non-invasive tech to pinpoint exactly where the problem is.
- 7:27Dan Schulz: Over three hundred five-star reviews on Google, they cover the entire East Side, Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue, all of it.
- 7:34Dan Schulz: If your water bill's been climbing and your meter's been spinning fast enough to cut meat, you should give Lincoln and his team a call at two five three-eight zero zero-one four one two, or you can visit them at
- 7:46Dan Schulz: simplyleakdetection.biz.
- 7:48Dan Schulz: And that message brought to you by Simply Leak Detection.
