- 0:00Speaker 1: Listen to me on this.
- 0:02Speaker 2: No longer does a man have to go through another
- 0:06Speaker 2: human being to get to God. That ought to make
- 0:10Speaker 2: every cradle Catholic in the house shout for joy.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Amen. Amen.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Now some of you cradle Catholics are like, I'm not
- 0:17Speaker 2: sure if I can celebrate because I'm feeling a little
- 0:19Speaker 2: guilty today. I'm not even here. I'm here at this church.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This guy doesn't wear a black rob and a collar,
- 0:23Speaker 2: and I'm not going to mass, you know, And so.
- 0:24Speaker 1: You're feeling guilty. You don't even know if you have
- 0:26Speaker 1: the freedom to clap.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yes, you know, you have the freedom to clap, because
- 0:30Speaker 2: this is good news for you.
- 0:33Speaker 1: You don't have to go through another human being to
- 0:35Speaker 1: get to God.
- 0:40Speaker 2: And by the way, it shouldn't only make the cradle
- 0:42Speaker 2: Catholics happy, it makes pastors like me happy because I
- 0:45Speaker 2: don't want to hear your sin business. I don't want
- 0:48Speaker 2: you to tell me your sin stuff.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I got my own. I don't want to hear yours too.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Years ago, we were at the old building and I
- 0:55Speaker 2: had a dear lady come to me. Never met her before,
- 0:57Speaker 2: obviously it was her first time I stepped off the pulpit.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Was after Wednesday night service, she came up to me.
- 1:01Speaker 2: She says, Father, I have some sins to confess. I said,
- 1:05Speaker 2: First of all, I'm a brother, okay, sister, don't call
- 1:07Speaker 2: me father.
- 1:09Speaker 1: And second of all, good news.
- 1:11Speaker 2: You don't have to tell me a stinking thing because
- 1:14Speaker 2: I don't want to know what you've done. You get
- 1:17Speaker 2: to tell it all to Jesus, Praise God. And that
- 1:19Speaker 2: was liberating to her. That was liberating to her as
- 1:24Speaker 2: it should be. Listen, you do not have to confess
- 1:26Speaker 2: your sins to me. You don't have to confess your
- 1:28Speaker 2: sins to anyone except in the sense of James five sixteen.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Now James five sixteen tells us confess your sins one
- 1:34Speaker 2: to another, okay. And the reason, he says that is
- 1:37Speaker 2: for the purpose of prayer and accountability, to be vulnerable
- 1:41Speaker 2: and honest, so we can pray for each other regarding
- 1:43Speaker 2: our temptations and sins, not for the purpose of absolving
- 1:47Speaker 2: someone from their sins. There is not another human being
- 1:53Speaker 2: who is able to absolve you of your sins. That
- 1:57Speaker 2: is something only God can do. The Bible says in
- 2:01Speaker 2: one Timothy two five, for there is one God and
- 2:04Speaker 2: one mediator between God and men, the man Christ, Jesus,
- 2:08Speaker 2: the god Man, that God is the only one who
- 2:11Speaker 2: stands that Jesus is the only one who stands between
- 2:13Speaker 2: God and mankind. He is our intercessor, he is our mediator,
- 2:18Speaker 2: he is our advocate, not another human being.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Not another human being. And I'll say it this directly.
- 2:24Speaker 2: It is an insult to God, and it is an
- 2:26Speaker 2: injustice to scripture to say that even though God tore
- 2:31Speaker 2: the curtain to give open access to him through Christ,
- 2:35Speaker 2: that we can't really come directly to him, that we
- 2:37Speaker 2: still have to go through a priest or another person
- 2:39Speaker 2: to get there. A resounding no, we don't, my friends,
- 2:44Speaker 2: Jesus said in John fourteen six. I am the Way,
- 2:47Speaker 2: I am the Truth, I am the life. No man
- 2:50Speaker 2: gets to the Father but by me. That's what Jesus said.
- 2:55Speaker 2: The Bible says that he is the priest who brings
- 2:57Speaker 2: us to God Hebrews seven four and twenty five. It
- 3:01Speaker 2: says because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Therefore he is able to save completely those who come
- 3:08Speaker 2: to God through him because he always lives to intercede
- 3:14Speaker 2: for us. So you see, we go to God through Jesus.
- 3:17Speaker 2: We don't go to God through another human being. When
- 3:19Speaker 2: that curtain was torn, one of the things God was
- 3:22Speaker 2: saying was no more need for the priesthood to intercede
- 3:26Speaker 2: between man and God. Before this event, the priests would
- 3:30Speaker 2: represent God to man and represent man to God. Now,
- 3:33Speaker 2: in a sense, we have a spiritual priesthood. The Bible
- 3:37Speaker 2: talks about how we have been made a kingdom and
- 3:38Speaker 2: priest to serve our God, because only in that sense
- 3:41Speaker 2: are we still to represent God well to people. That's
- 3:45Speaker 2: called evangelism, and we are to represent people to God
- 3:48Speaker 2: in the sense that we pray for people, we intercede
- 3:50Speaker 2: for people, but we have no role in absolving one
- 3:53Speaker 2: another from sin.
- 3:55Speaker 1: The priesthood in terms.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Of the absolution of sin, has been abolished by what
- 4:00Speaker 2: Christ did on the cross. He is our high priest,
- 4:03Speaker 2: He is our intercessor, he is our mediator, he is
- 4:06Speaker 2: our advocate.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Everybody get that.
- 4:07Speaker 2: That's an important thing that happened when that curtain was torn,
- 4:10Speaker 2: and we need to understand this because God is now
- 4:12Speaker 2: approachable directly through his son Jesus. Number two, it eliminated
- 4:16Speaker 2: the animal sacrificial system you see before Jesus died in
- 4:20Speaker 2: the cross. God made gracious provision for the temporary atonement
- 4:25Speaker 2: of sin for people who had sinned against God. I mean,
- 4:30Speaker 2: how were people forgiven before Jesus died of the cross.
- 4:34Speaker 2: This is the Old Testament sacrificial system. In the Old Testament,
- 4:38Speaker 2: God made gracious provision in this way. And I'm summarizing
- 4:41Speaker 2: basically the Old Testament on this topic that God said this,
- 4:45Speaker 2: if you bring an innocent animal, I will accept it
- 4:49Speaker 2: in exchange for your not so innocent, sinful life. That
- 4:54Speaker 2: if you offer an innocent lamb or goat, and you
- 4:57Speaker 2: bring it to the temple and slaughtered it, a life
- 5:00Speaker 2: for a life, the blood of that innocent animal, I
- 5:02Speaker 2: will accept as temporary atonement for your sins. But you
- 5:06Speaker 2: must do this year after year until such time that
- 5:10Speaker 2: Christ died on the cross. So, when Christ died in
- 5:13Speaker 2: a cross, that then eliminated the animal sacrificial system, because
- 5:17Speaker 2: Jesus came as the lamb of God who died for
- 5:20Speaker 2: the sins of the world his sacrifice once for all
- 5:24Speaker 2: people for all time.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Until that happened, the.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Animal sacrificial system was in place, and it was God's
- 5:30Speaker 2: gracious provision to atone for people's sins. So this is
- 5:33Speaker 2: how it worked. If you were a male in that day,
- 5:35Speaker 2: age twenty one or older, you were responsible for bringing
- 5:38Speaker 2: an animal, either a lamb or a goat, to sacrifice
- 5:41Speaker 2: for your sins and or for the sins of your
- 5:43Speaker 2: family members. And so the head of a home or
- 5:47Speaker 2: an individual male would bring a lamb or a goat,
- 5:51Speaker 2: bring it to the priest at the temple. The worshiper
- 5:54Speaker 2: would then lay his weight on the head of the animal.
- 5:58Speaker 2: It was symbolic of transferring the sins onto this innocent animal.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You would then personally slit the throat of the lamb.
- 6:05Speaker 1: The priest would be involved in this.
- 6:06Speaker 2: He would be holding a basin to capture some of
- 6:09Speaker 2: the blood of this lamb as it bled from its
- 6:11Speaker 2: slit neck. Then the priest would take the blood sprinkle
- 6:14Speaker 2: it on the altar as an atonement for your sins.
- 6:16Speaker 2: That's how it would work. Every single year you had
- 6:19Speaker 2: to do that. So the fact that the curtain was
- 6:22Speaker 2: torn into is all symbolic of okay, you can approach God.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Freely now through his son Jesus.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Jesus became the perfect sacrifice. His shed blood on the
- 6:30Speaker 2: cross eliminates the animal sacrificial system. This also is good
- 6:35Speaker 2: news for us because no longer do you have to
- 6:37Speaker 2: drag lamb chops to church.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Can you imagine that?
- 6:40Speaker 2: Can you imagine if you had to just be bringing
- 6:42Speaker 2: a lamb every time he came to church, and I'd
- 6:44Speaker 2: be up here with a basin and You'd be slitting
- 6:46Speaker 2: its neck and they'd be.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Like this back, you know, buck, next, buck. I mean, the.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Lamb is happy about this too, except that now you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: instead of it being a sacrificial lamb, it gets put
- 6:59Speaker 2: in a then made into schwarmat delicious. But anyway, I digress.
- 7:05Speaker 2: The sacrificial system is gone now because Jesus paid the
- 7:09Speaker 2: price on the cross. He is the lamb of God
- 7:11Speaker 2: that takes away the sins of the world. Hebrews ten,
- 7:16Speaker 2: verses four and five. It is impossible for the blood
- 7:20Speaker 2: of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, Christ
- 7:23Speaker 2: came into the world, one savior, one sacrifice at one time,
- 7:29Speaker 2: for all people, for all generations. The sacrificial system has
- 7:34Speaker 2: been eliminated. Verse John two, Verses one and two says,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the
- 7:40Speaker 2: Father Jesus Christ, the righteous and He himself is the propitiation,
- 7:44Speaker 2: meaning the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Listen to the
- 7:47Speaker 2: rest of the verse, and not for our sins only,
- 7:49Speaker 2: but for the sins of the whole world. Because God's
- 7:51Speaker 2: sacrifice through his son Jesus was for all who believe
- 7:55Speaker 2: and receive, for anyone who believes and receives. One Peter
- 7:59Speaker 2: three eighteen says, for Christ died for sins, once for
- 8:02Speaker 2: all the righteous, for the unrighteous, to bring you to God,
- 8:07Speaker 2: so that we might have access to God directly, which
- 8:10Speaker 2: brings me to the third and the final point. When
- 8:12Speaker 2: God tore a curtain, it opened the way for all
- 8:15Speaker 2: to come to God. Hebrews ten nineteen to twenty two
- 8:18Speaker 2: says it this way. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence
- 8:21Speaker 2: to enter the most totly placed by the blood of Jesus.
- 8:24Speaker 2: He's talking in the terms of the temple. How do
- 8:27Speaker 2: you have access to.
- 8:28Speaker 1: The presence of God?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Well, we have confidence to enter his presence, how by
- 8:33Speaker 2: the blood of Jesus. This is Hebrews ten, verse twenty
- 8:36Speaker 2: by a new and living way open for us through
- 8:39Speaker 2: the curtain that is his body. Notice that the writer
- 8:43Speaker 2: of Hebrews is using this terminology to connect the curtain
- 8:48Speaker 2: in the temple with the body of Jesus, saying, in effect,
- 8:52Speaker 2: when that curtain was torn in two, it coincided with
- 8:57Speaker 2: when Jesus was sacrificed, when he was when he was broken,
- 9:01Speaker 2: if you will, because God was communicating that through the.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Sacrifice of his son.
- 9:06Speaker 2: The curtain has been torn into because we now have
- 9:09Speaker 2: open access to God. The rest of the verse says,
- 9:12Speaker 2: and since we have a great priest, that's Jesus over
- 9:14Speaker 2: the house of God, let us draw near to God
- 9:17Speaker 2: with a sincere heart and full assurance of faith.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Let us draw near to God.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You have to understand, before this curtain was torn, people
- 9:23Speaker 2: never thought about drawing near to God. He was a
- 9:25Speaker 2: distant God. He was unapproachable, He was inaccessible. But now
- 9:29Speaker 2: God is knowable, personable, approachable, and accessible. And no other
- 9:34Speaker 2: world religion invites you to come to God like Christianity
- 9:38Speaker 2: does through faith in Jesus Christ, not another single world religion.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Jesus said, I am the gate or the door. Whoever
- 9:45Speaker 2: enters through me shalt be saved. John ten, verse nine.
- 9:48Speaker 2: He said in John sorry in Revelation three twenty, behold
- 9:52Speaker 2: I stand at the door and knock. Whoever hears my
- 9:54Speaker 2: voice and opens the door, I will come in, and
- 9:56Speaker 2: I will dine with.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Him and he with me.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Those are words of fellowship. Those are words of relationship.
- 10:02Speaker 2: And that's exactly what God wants with us. He wants
- 10:05Speaker 2: relationship with us, he wants fellowship with us. Islam doesn't
- 10:10Speaker 2: offer you that. Hinduism doesn't offer you that, Buddhism doesn't
- 10:14Speaker 2: offer you that. Judaism doesn't even offer you that. It
- 10:17Speaker 2: is only in Christ. It is in Christ. Christianity. That's
- 10:22Speaker 2: what Christianity means. Being in Christ is what offers us
- 10:27Speaker 2: that kind of fellowship and relationship with the Father. When
- 10:31Speaker 2: God tore that curtain, he made himself accessible to us
- 10:37Speaker 2: through his son, Jesus Christ, so that one day, when
- 10:41Speaker 2: you die, you can stand in his presence welcomed and forgiven.
- 10:48Speaker 2: That's what pat is experiencing today.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Welcomed and forgiven.
- 10:55Speaker 2: And this is why Hebrews four to sixteen says, let
- 10:57Speaker 2: us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that
- 11:01Speaker 2: we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in
- 11:05Speaker 2: time of need.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Amen.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Would you buy your heads with me? Amen you can
- 11:09Speaker 2: praise him. Amen, bow your heads with me. Some of
- 11:18Speaker 2: you don't know a personal relationship with Jesus. Some of
- 11:21Speaker 2: you perhaps.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Thought that he was not that accessible or approachable.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Some of you believed you had to go through another
- 11:28Speaker 2: human being to get to him. I want you to
- 11:31Speaker 2: understand that you can have a personal relationship with the
- 11:34Speaker 2: creator of the universe through faith in Jesus Christ, who
- 11:37Speaker 2: died in a cross for you. God has opened the
- 11:40Speaker 2: curtain wide for you to have relationship with him. He
- 11:46Speaker 2: is knowable, he is personable, He loves you. All he
- 11:52Speaker 2: wants is for you to step through that curtain and
- 11:55Speaker 2: come into his presence. If you don't know him in
- 11:59Speaker 2: a personal way, I want to offer you an opportunity
- 12:02Speaker 2: to pray and invite him into your life, to know
- 12:04Speaker 2: him the way that he longs to be known, to
- 12:08Speaker 2: love him the way that he already loves you, to
- 12:11Speaker 2: have relationship with him. And it begins with a prayer.
- 12:15Speaker 2: It begins with surrendering your life to Jesus. And so
- 12:19Speaker 2: I'm going to lead in a prayer. And if you
- 12:21Speaker 2: want to join me, you can just whisper this prayer
- 12:23Speaker 2: after me. You can pray it right where you're seated online.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Our audience watching you can pray watching, and you can
- 12:30Speaker 2: just make it your own personal profession of faith today
- 12:34Speaker 2: to step behind that curtain that's been opened wide to
- 12:37Speaker 2: you and to have relationship with your heavenly Father.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So pray this prayer with me.
- 12:43Speaker 2: If you want to know him in a personal way,
- 12:45Speaker 2: just say, Lord, Jesus, I thank you that you died
- 12:50Speaker 2: on that cross for me, and I pray right now
- 12:55Speaker 2: that you would forgive me of my sins, cleanse my heart.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I want a relationship with you. I want to know
- 13:04Speaker 2: you in a personal way. So I surrender to you today.
- 13:11Speaker 2: I enter into your presence through faith in Jesus. Thank
- 13:15Speaker 2: you for loving me. Thank you for dying for me.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I surrender my life to you by faith in Jesus,
- 13:27Speaker 2: in whose name I pray.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Amen.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Now, let me tell you before you leave here today
- 13:33Speaker 2: and those of you watching online, if you prayed that
- 13:35Speaker 2: prayer with me, you receive Christ as you're savior. There's
- 13:38Speaker 2: going to be a pastor down front here who will
- 13:40Speaker 2: give you a Bible. We don't want anything from you,
- 13:42Speaker 2: there's no strings attached, just a way of remembering today's decision.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And if you prayed that prayer.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Watching online, we already got a lot of emails and
- 13:50Speaker 2: texts into the church from the previous services. You can
- 13:53Speaker 2: text into the number that's on your screen seven oh three,
- 13:56Speaker 2: eight four, four nine, nine sixty nine. We'll send you
- 13:59Speaker 2: a Bible if you give us your address, if you
- 14:01Speaker 2: prayed that prayer with us. Also, God bless you all
- 14:04Speaker 2: go on the grace of the Lord. Amen and Amen,
- 14:07Speaker 2: have a good day.
