Or Amy Shuler a good one and kanawh candychmister Ben Selango are here with some
2:13
sort of an announcement. Again, as I said, Yastria, I don't
2:15
even know what it is. I'll find out when you do a little later
2:17
on as we get ready for the Dirty Birds opening game. The Birds are
2:21
holding a home run derby tomorrow at go Mark Ballpark. Jill Garren for the
2:25
Birds is here to talk about that. Natalie Tennant, a former West Virginia
2:29
Secretary of State who is running as a Democrat for Kanaw Candy Commission, will
2:32
be stopping by a little bit later on. Plus we're gonna spend some time
2:37
talking about Dancing with the Stars, a special event going on in conjunction with
2:39
that here in Charleston. How was that for a Friday show? Now,
2:43
normally we would have Hannah Gardner from the Kanaw Charlesty Maine Association not at this
2:46
time, but Hannah is not with us this morning. Hannah had a bit
2:52
of an emergency situation with one of her pets, so positive thoughts to her
2:55
and her dog in that situation. We don't have Hannah, but we do
2:59
have the pet. The pictures posted at Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and the
3:02
Dave Vlan Show and X it's Rascal. Rascal is a three month old male,
3:08
not fixed yet but will be micro chipped. All shots are up to
3:12
date now. Hannah tells me that Rascal is a real sweetheart, loves to
3:16
run and play. He was taken in as a stray. So go get
3:23
Rascal and again I've get the picture posted of Rascal on Dave Allen Radio and
3:25
Facebook and the Dave Valen Show at Dave A seventy on X. The artist
3:30
formally known as Twitter now about the building reconstruction going on. Talk to Handa
3:34
about that as well. They are still hoping to get the necessary repairs needed,
3:38
but that's temporary. They are looking for a new location for the animal's
3:42
shelter and they definitely need it in my opinion. So again, our best
3:46
wishes out to Hannah. She had an emergency situation with one of her own
3:50
personal patch. You deal with pets, it's kind of like a teacher,
3:53
I guess that deals with kids. All day. Well, you got kids
3:54
at home too, so she's taking care of that. We'll try to have
3:58
Hannah back with us next week. But again, Rascal's photo that's our pet
4:00
of the week is posted online on my social media sit so go take a
4:04
look at Rascal three months old, not fixed it with but will be an
4:10
absolute sweetheart of a puppy. But Hannah did want me to mention it is
4:14
puppy, so keep that in mind. It has the ways of puppies,
4:16
so keep that in my butt. Would be a great pet for somebody,
4:21
all right. That will wrap up that segment of Dave Violance showing five Any
4:25
Lives brought to part by General Hardware of Winfield of Milton and General Lumber of
4:30
Windfield. If you're planning a project this spring, shop locally. They're also
4:31
hiring to stop by any location for details. Visit General Hardware wv dot com.
4:36
Charleston Mere, Amy Shuolter, good One and Kadawha County Commissioner Ben Solango
4:42
are here. Good morning, Good morning, your mayorship, Good morning,
4:45
your Commissionership. I love hearing about the shelter. It's where we got our
4:48
bus, Gus the bus, goodwin many many years ago, a Lab Saint
4:54
Bernard. We didn't know he was a Lab Saint Bernard when we first got
4:57
him. We just thought he was a lab. Oh my gosh, he'sn't
5:00
show me the passing around the picture. And he was the best dog,
5:03
the best dog, the best dog. He lived to fifteen and he I
5:09
think his fighting weight he got up to about one hundred and thirty seven pounds.
5:12
Yeah, it's a big boy, but he still acted like a lap
5:14
dog. But he was the best dog we ever had. And we lost
5:17
him in January. And every single time you have your pet on Friday,
5:24
I sometimes may take screenshots and send it to Booth Goodwin and say, hey,
5:28
look at this Rascal is three months old. We're a big dog family.
5:31
We're a big dog family. We are too. We have three dogs.
5:34
And Tara had to wrestle a chipmunk out of our one hundred pound Golden
5:39
retriever's mouth this morning. You're talking about the puppy face. We don't have
5:43
puppies, but they're still in the puppy face for some reason. Yeah and
5:46
yeah, he caught a chipmunk and Tara had to hold brought out of his
5:48
mouth this morning. Very exact Commissioner Slango, why is Pete at your house?
5:55
All right? So I got a text earlier in the week from from
5:59
the from the law Farm Slango and good one, and they they ask,
6:03
don't get, don't get. Rumors started that they could come on because there
6:08
was some sort of an announcements. I'm going to leave it. I don't
6:10
know who's going to make the announcement, so I'll kick it off and I'll
6:14
allow Commissioner Slango to do that. But you know, we started, you
6:17
know, I was thinking about this morning. You know, back in twenty
6:20
twenty two, we all got together and announced our vision to revitalize part of
6:28
a large, very large part of downtown Charleston with the Capital Sports Center,
6:33
And you know, I was thinking about it this morning. We've been talking
6:36
about this since twenty fourteen. Technically, I mean, we've been talking about
6:41
a Capital Sports Complex. We've been talking about sports tourism, which is of
6:44
course a forty billion dollar industry, one of the industries that's growing faster than
6:48
anywhere. If you were a parent, a grandparent, and aunt and uncle,
6:51
a cousin and brother, you see and travel all over as we did,
6:56
as most families do a lot of families do to travel with your kids.
7:00
And so you know, since that time, we developed an authority to
7:04
help oversee and make good decisions about the direction. And so we took our
7:09
time. I mean large economic development projects and by the way, this is
7:13
a very large economic development project takes time. We've developed an authority, we
7:18
got the support from our federal partners, some millions of funding of dollars from
7:25
them, of course, our amazing partners at the county, millions of dollars
7:28
from them, millions of dollars from the City of Charleston. We're working with
7:32
a group sports facilities and who literally have built I think over seventy I don't
7:40
want to give the exact number, but over seventy of these type of facilities
7:44
to make sure, like what are we putting in here. We think we
7:46
know what we want, we think we know will work, but let's go
7:49
to the experts and say, what are the things that we really need?
7:53
And so those are the things that have been happening. People ask me all
7:55
the time, Hey where are you. That's a brief snapshot of where we've
7:59
been to where we are today. Yeah, And the good part about this,
8:03
and this was This was a This has been a difficult process, more
8:07
difficult than I thought it would be, probably the mayor thought it would be
8:11
in the beginning because of all the way that the property was structured, the
8:16
way that the agreements obviously that had been in place for many many years were
8:22
structured. But this week we were able to close on the Macy's property,
8:26
which was which took her effort. Kevin Baker has been incredible. I mean
8:35
they have worked tirelessly, Chris Settles, Mark Slotnick, you know, our
8:37
entire team, the Mayor's entire team. So what we're doing now is we're
8:43
able to finally get the agreements in place. We've recorded the documents, and
8:46
the Sports Authority now owns the Macy's building. So what we can do is
8:52
start demolition. I think on Monday we're going to have some walkthroughs with media
8:58
and next Thursday, correct me if I'm wrong on the time, but next
9:01
Thursday at one we're going to a press conference in front of the Macy's building
9:05
and Rodney Loftus, who's been on standby. Rodney, thank you, thank
9:09
you for your patience. We have been so close, literally out in Bulldawser
9:13
in the back parking lot. Right now, we're gonna we're gonna knock something
9:16
down. I don't know what he's gonna knock down, but I'm gonna leave
9:18
that to him. Something we can safely knock down. But this has been
9:20
a very long process, but we're moving forward. We were able to close.
9:28
I think we've closed on was it Wednesday? It was Wednesday, Yeah,
9:33
Wednesday afternoon. We were able to actually record the documents. We've been
9:37
working hard with the whole group. Obviously, they have a tremendous interest in
9:41
this. They have an interest in making sure that their property is protected.
9:45
We've been working with the bond holders, they have an interest in this.
9:48
But we were finally able to get all of that together, at least on
9:50
the Macy's part, so that we can press forward. And I want to
9:54
give a shout out to CURA too, the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority really who
10:00
has been a champion of this, I mean in development. That's why they
10:03
were formed way back when, and they were a real big champion in this,
10:07
and they helped us truly make this happen. Without their support and their
10:11
help, we wouldn't have been able to make that happen. Yeah, absolutely,
10:16
they've been great. You know, we've our county manager Jennifer Harold has
10:20
been wonderful. She's put in a lot of time, a lot of effort
10:24
on this. The board of course, Steve White's the President of the board,
10:26
and all the others, Nancy and Kyle and Nate Burton. You know,
10:33
they've they've worked incredibly hard on this as well. Commissioner Carper and commission
10:37
Wheeler, commission President Wheeler, they've been they've been a big support of this
10:41
because they've seen how this works. They've seen the success at the Shawnee Sports
10:48
Complex bringing in you know, over one hundred and fifty million dollars in its
10:52
first five years and economic impact. We're bringing in thirty to forty million dollars
10:56
this year alone based upon the US whist tornaments that are coming in in the
11:00
Capitol Cup, which brought an eight to ten million dollars just three days after
11:03
the complex was hit with a tornado. You know, this this works.
11:07
So we begin a lot of calls from the folks at the hotels, the
11:11
restaurants, everybody's status got thanks, Well, I got a call from the
11:16
hotel yesterday is Maryah. So that's the status. We actually were able to
11:20
close on the Macy's property, and we wanted to announce that here because we've
11:22
talked about, you know, so many times on here about what the progress
11:26
is. There were a lot of legal hurdles, to be honest, there
11:31
were multiple lawsuits that were going on that the lawyers, that lawyers much smarter
11:35
than me, were able to negotiate and try to Always the lawyers, there's
11:39
always the dag on lawyers, and then you've got different easements you've got to
11:45
deal with. You've got bond holders who were kind of everywhere, I mean,
11:48
I forget even forget where they're based, taxas or somewhere, and you
11:52
know, you've got to work all this out. You have the whole group.
11:54
And uh so, finally we were able to get that done. So
11:58
that's why we wanted to come in and I'm for share with you that's the
12:01
status. Yeah, And so again to kind of recap the announcement is that
12:07
and we had kind of alluded to when you were on the show earlier this
12:09
week that we just didn't have the finals, is that you're going to start
12:13
to see some earth moving and more importantly, some things being torn down.
12:18
That's exactly right. The punchline is this, The Macy's building is coming down.
12:22
It's been a long time in coming, and what is going to be
12:26
in replace of that building is truly going to continue the sentergy, the energy
12:31
that we have in downtown Charleston. There isn't a day that goes by that
12:35
somebody doesn't talk to me about a new act that's coming in, a concert
12:39
that's coming in. Families that are flooding from Shawnee. Guess where they stay.
12:43
They stay with us for days on end. And you know, if
12:48
you were anywhere in the city of Charleston over the last week and you saw
12:50
one hundred and twenty teams with about two thousand girls playing volleyball, well think
12:56
about that. Okay, that's a nice chunk of business. That's a lot
12:58
of people in town. That's small potatoes compared to what we're getting ready to
13:03
do. That's a small small look at what we're ready to do. And
13:07
I'll just I'll leave my comments with this. You know, council member Pat
13:11
Jones, whose son is a fantastic coach in Nitro and he said, you
13:18
know, he's actually said it. He said publicly on the council floor last
13:22
week, he said, you know, I had my concerns about this.
13:26
I knew you were giving me the numbers billion dollars and the hotels and the
13:28
restaurants, and how it changed the face of so many communities, he said,
13:33
And I understood what you're saying. I didn't really get it. So
13:35
I went to Pittsburgh, and I went to Pittsburgh with my kids, and
13:37
I saw what can happen when you have a facility like this to a community.
13:43
He said. If I wasn't in before, I'm in now because I
13:45
understand the return on investment. I understand not only that from a travel sports
13:50
tourism, but I also understand it now and most important for our kids here.
13:54
Our kids here deserve and need good places to play. You know,
13:58
we've got some outstanding athletes here, and not only outstanding athletes that are going
14:03
to go on get college scholarships, play play volleyball or basketball, but we
14:09
also have a community that their children need to learn and develop and grow.
14:13
They don't know what they want to do. Let's give them place to figure
14:16
that out. Let me read a quick text. I know you both got
14:20
to go, but this is I think, and again we don't want to.
14:22
I'm going to get into timeline before I let you go to But somebody
14:26
texts want to know what would the parking situation be for the sports complex.
14:28
I know we're not quite there yet. The town Center Mall parking garage looks
14:33
looks like am Offman nest according to a Texter. So I guess all that's
14:37
going to come and at some point, I mean, we're not We're not
14:39
anywhere close to that yet. I'll go ahead and just I'll give it to
14:41
Commissioner Slinger, but I'll just go ahead and say this. We need those
14:45
parking garages for a variety of different reasons. By the way, we need
14:48
them because of they're booked. By the way they get booked. We have
14:52
a lot of people that have monthly, monthly passes to those parking garages.
14:58
Don't forget we have a TC Energy that's also coming into town. We have
15:01
a lot of businesses that are growing. And oh, by the way,
15:03
we have a lot of residential that's popping up downtown. So those parking lots
15:09
are going to be important, not just for this but for the entire community,
15:13
not just the Capital Sports Center. Yeah, I think that's the next
15:16
piece of the puzzle. We've got to look at exactly how that's going to
15:20
be structured. I know there are some hotels that are nearby that are interested
15:24
in parking lots, and so somebody actually asked me in the hall this morning
15:28
what the status of a new hotel was in Charleston. Well, I can
15:31
say from what I know, there are several projects that are planned that are
15:37
watching what we're doing against It's all going to be built around us pretty much.
15:39
It's like City Center. It's like Plaza. People were waiting for us
15:43
to build the park. Now look at it. Now look at city Center.
15:45
I mean, it's the go to place, go to place. And
15:48
so there are other projects. I know there's a restaurant that's waiting to see
15:52
what we do. Their hotels are looking. So that's why it's another big
15:56
change we move forward to give them some confidence that this is this is happening.
16:02
All right, Well, guys, I appreciate you making the announcement to
16:04
here, uh and you can be hearing a whole lot more about this.
16:07
You said there's going to be sort of a media walkthrough I think next week
16:11
and then an actual press conference on Thursday. Is I think Monday at one
16:15
am. I right, I think, and then Thursday at one is going
16:18
to be the press conference where we'll we'll go over there and Rodney is I
16:22
hope Rodney let them, lets the mayor knock something down. I absolutely will
16:26
be in the back with Ron Butlin from Cure. I think we'll just jump
16:29
in that and take a take a quick wall down. We appreciate you,
16:32
Dave, and thanks to everybody for your support. My phone is blowing up.
16:36
When's it going to be done? And all this is going to be
16:38
because I had had a few text people saying, well is this going to
16:41
be there? And that's going to be there. We're going to talk about
16:42
that. We got to start, or we're going to start. We're getting
16:45
that building down first, that's right. And it'll be a public input,
16:49
of course, when we've had tremendous public input by the wall the past two
16:53
years. I mean we've been flooded. I mean that's why you know we
16:56
worked with sports facilities inc. Last thing I'll say is the public has given
17:00
us incredible input on Ready. All right, guys, I appreciate you both

being here. Thanks a lot, Thanks a lot. Nine twenty four of

into players, managers whatever, you get a new manager this season. I
20:36
know everybody's excited about that. But we're excited before all that about this event
20:40
that's going to be going on tomorrow, this home run Derby. Talk about
20:42
it. Yeah, So the home run Derby. We have not announced our
20:45
full player set yet. Quite frankly, I think some of the guys didn't
20:51
realize we had a home run derby going on. A lot of players just
20:53
kind of show up and they do what they're told, you know. But
20:56
the big name that I'm excited about for the home run derby is Keon Barnum.
20:59
He is the one that hit a massive home run two years ago when
21:03
he played for Lexington here and it's still sitting up on that building behind right
21:07
we're talking. I was talking Andy Shay about that yesterday. That's that ball.
21:11
I mean, I mean, I don't know how many feet it was.
21:15
I mean it hit somewhere near like Cistonville or something. I mean it.
21:19
And so he's going to be taking party. But there's also and I'm
21:22
always say this in huge the term celebrity, but there's some pretty well known
21:26
people in the community. They're going to be taking part in the home run
21:29
derby as well. County Commissioner Ben Selango, who was just here. Who
21:33
by the way, and since he's told me the story, I'm never gonna
21:36
let it die that Selango scored the basket for the wrong team when he was
21:41
a child in basketball. But he's gonna try his lucky hitting mar But Solango
21:45
is gonna be out there hitting them in the balls. He is as well,
21:47
He's gonna have his work cut out for him, because I think the
21:48
big name in the celebrity round, as you said, is going to be
21:52
Chad Akers. He actually used to play for the Charleston Wheelers back when they
21:56
were in the Reds organization. He played triple A. And because there's always
22:00
a Logan connection from my hometown, Logan, West Virginia exactly roomed with Ichiro
22:04
Suzuki. Wow I did not that was his roommate when he was in the
22:07
minors. So so Chad's going to be taking part and that's good also,
22:11
I understand. Can I throw out a couple of Avon Coburn YEP, former
22:17
WVU football standout, is going to be there, and from Metro News,
22:21
our very own Jared Lewis is going to be there as well. The pride
22:25
of the State of Indiana is going to be out there as well. And
22:27
Jared's a young guy. He's not like old guys like me that can't do
22:30
I mean, Jared probably do pretty well for himself. Hopefully we'll see again
22:34
the celebrity guys. They don't have to hit over the home run fence.
22:37
They just have to hit it out of the infield in the air, so
22:38
we're not asking for too much, but we'll see. I'm gonna tell you
22:41
I know Chad Acres very well, and I think Chad has got a pretty
22:45
good chance of putting it over the fence, even at his age. He's
22:47
probably gonna guess he's a few years younger than I am. He's probably his
22:49
late forties right now, but he still plays competitive softball. I think Chad
22:52
could probably put that ball over the fence still, But we'll see what happens
22:56
to someone else is going to be going on besides the home run. I
22:57
mean, if it's a big day of activity tomorrow exactly. So, our
23:00
gates are opening at five o'clock. The big one that I hope fans really
23:03
come out for is our players are going to be there to mingle with the
23:06
fans throughout the entire home run derby. We're going to have a select time
23:08
for autographs before the derby starts at six point thirty. The guys that aren't
23:12
participating in the derby, they're going to be walking around interacting with fans,
23:15
signing autographs. We also have some local little leagues that'll be out in the
23:18
outfield shagging the balls during the home run derby. So again, like we
23:22
mentioned, we have the Rubenberger, We're gonna have all of these fun opportunities
23:26
for people to learn what's going on for the Dirty Bird season this year.
23:30
And of course, the weather's gonna be good. It's gonna be a little
23:32
bit cooler. It was picture perfect for media day over there yesterday, but
23:34
we get the rain now. But the rain's going to be moving away and
23:37
it's the weather is going to be fantastic. And it's just a great opportunity
23:41
too for fans to be able to come out, maybe just walk around,
23:45
walk around the ballpark and take it on them, because if you come to
23:48
a game, you may you know you're interested getting your seats or getting into
23:49
the beer line or the hot dog line or whatever. You get to actually
23:52
and plus to interact with the players. And that's one of the great things
23:56
I like about what the what the Dirty Birds do and this league, but
24:00
specifically with this team, Jill, is that they're very interactive. I mean,
24:04
you guys have been out in the schools doing things, You've been out
24:07
in the communities doing things, really becoming a big part of the community.
24:11
One of the first things that some of the players asked me when they found
24:12
out I'm in charge of community relations. They said, Hey, are we
24:15
going to schools? Are we going to hospitals? That was the first thing
24:18
they asked. They want to be a part of this community. So I'm
24:21
excited about this season, and it's a great opportunity, like you said,
24:22
for the fans to get to know the guys in a more relaxed setting than
24:26
a game. Again, I'm gonna have all you guys back on opening Day,
24:27
which Thursday, you're going to bring me a manager of the manager will
24:30
be here. I think a player or two usually come in and the GM
24:34
and different staff and so on and so forth. And you're listening right now
24:38
to not me, but her, the play by play voice. Yes,
24:41
ch the Dirty Birds. What kind of preparation you've been doing to get ready
24:45
for that? It's been on the back of burner up until yesterday media Day,
24:48
And now that the media day, the press conference is over and now
24:51
I can focus in on that. But really my prep is just getting to
24:53
know the guys outside of the baseball statistics. I have to talk for three
24:57
hours by myself. I need to have some good story. People don't,
25:00
I think realize, and I've done. I've not done a whole lot of
25:03
sports play by play, but I have done the three the three major sports,
25:07
and baseball is a little bit different because you don't always have action,
25:11
you know, And that's why if you listen to I think, you know,
25:14
my my idol growing up was the great Marty Brenham for the Cincinnati Retz.
25:17
You gotta have stories, and you can only can't have dead air.
25:22
That's the enemy of any broadcast or in any format. But you can't.
25:25
You can't just talk about the action all the time because baseball there's not always
25:27
something going on. There's pitching changes, there's you know, so on and
25:30
so forth, and you gotta have stories. You got to be able to
25:33
say, Okay, all right, well this player, you know, spends
25:37
his spare time doing this and his talk about his family or something like that.
25:41
You got to have all that stuff right. And you mentioned family.
25:44
A lot of the guys have their wives and girlfriends that visit them or they
25:47
stay here at them throughout the season. I make a point to get to
25:48
know those girls so I can get the stories from them, their point of
25:52
view, I just get back to the home run derby again tomorrow at the
25:55
ballpark. Gates are going to open up five thirty. Home run Derby starts
25:57
at six thirty. And again, there's two two different levels of this.
26:00
You've got the actual professionals that are going to be out there, and you're
26:03
gonna let the little leaguers I guess come out there and shags and balls and
26:07
whatever. And then you're gonna have some members of the local community. We've
26:11
mentioned a few of them that are going to be out there. I think
26:14
having acres in there that that may be a ringer right there. I think
26:18
I think so too. He was. He was kind of a last minute
26:19
in addition, and I think if we told people who signed up that he
26:22
was going to be a part of it, they might have backed out.
26:25
So I'm happy he was last minute. And now can we can people still
26:29
sign up for that or is is it over? In terms of the local
26:30
community that one is over. If you are a little league that wants to
26:34
participate, please reach out to me and we can have you come out in
26:37
the field with the players as well. What's the best way to do then,
26:40
Jim, you can contact me at Jay Garan at Dirtybirds baseball dot com
26:44
And uh, the price kids twelve and under get in free for twelve and
26:48
up is how much? I believe it's seven dollars a normal, normal price.
26:52
It's like a normal, normal, normal event, all right, And
26:53
on opening night, and we're going to talk about that next Thursday, but
26:56
on no opening night, can you give us little preview of some of the
27:00
things are going to be happening in opening night? Well, I'm actually excited.
27:02
This is technically Dusty, our mascot's first opening night because we didn't bring
27:06
out Dusty until halfway through the season last year. So we're really making it
27:08
a big party, Dusty's first baseball opening night. We're gonna have a red
27:12
carpet, there's going to be balloons everywhere. There'll be balloon opportunities, and
27:17
I think we're going to have some players interacting with the fans as well pre
27:19
game, but we're still figuring that part out. You have a text here
27:22
for you, Okay says have you considered the baseball team setting up mentorships with
27:27
the kids? I have not considered that, but I think that's a great
27:30
idea. I know that we have some Little League clinics that will have be
27:34
put on will have different hospital visits and school visits, but actually setting up
27:40
in mentorship is a great idea, specifically guys who are local or around the
27:44
area. All right, well again, the home run Derby's tomorrow, over
27:48
to go more Ballpark. Jill. I appreciate you taking time out of your
27:49
schedule to be here. Get used to Jill's voice because she's going to be
27:52
on the air with me a lot this year. And I'm going to have
27:55
you and the team and everybody back for opening Day and go Jarret Lewis tomorrow.
28:00
He's the pride of WVRC Media and he's out there gonna be He's gonna
28:03
he's gonna do well tomorrow. I have faith and confidence in the kid.

Natalie Tenant, Democratic candidate for Knaw count Commission, joined us. Natalie,
31:07
good morning and welcome to the show. Thank you very much, and
31:11
Dave, I especially want to thank you. I know we've had our ins
31:14
and out sometimes always agreeing on things, but I really appreciate that you're having
31:18
me here because this is a good platform. It's great for the community.
31:22
We need local journalism. I know you're not news but your talk, but
31:26
we need local journalism to one because I love your glocal journalism and too,
31:33
we got to keep people accountable and you know, transparent and all that good
31:37
stuff. Yeah, that's why we need this. I appreciate it. I
31:41
have fun, that's the bottom line. I have fun. So you are,
31:45
of course very well known in political circus former secretary of State, and
31:48
you've run for other offices, and you've remained quite engaged in the political process
31:52
even when you weren't in office. But for those who may not know Natalie
31:55
Tennant, give us the bio in Natalie Tenant. Oh, I don't have
31:59
enough time. As youngest of seven children, raised on a farm in Marion
32:01
County and born on Christmas Day. But what I think that's part of raised
32:07
by teachers and principles, so I know what it's like to serve, and
32:10
it's about public service for me. And you know, we know the greatest
32:15
is military and clergy, but teachers are of the highest public service in my
32:22
eyes because I was raised by them, and so public service, I'm doing
32:25
it the way I can, whether it was journalism as a news reporter or
32:30
as an elected official. But also public service doesn't always have to be elected
32:36
value. Yeah, exactly right about that. But here I am ready for
32:39
us. But I mean, again, as I said, you have remained
32:44
engaged. I mean it's not like you just weren't doing anything for the last
32:46
couple of years. I mean, you remain engaged in the political process and
32:52
of voting issues and things of that nature. I think you think you're to
32:54
be committed for that. So with all that, you know, your background
32:59
in journalism and former Secretary of State and all this other stuff and being the
33:04
mountaineer, Yes, why do you want to run for county Commission? Oh?
33:07
So many different things. I mean when you start looking at what the
33:10
County Commission does, I love the fact for economic development. I love the
33:15
idea, you know, they are the canvassors of elections and the connections that
33:19
are made and that are needed in the way you help people. And actually
33:22
it was about a group of women. I was at a meeting and they
33:27
were talking and they were like, we think we need a candidate for county
33:30
Commission. And there was another woman there and I thought, man, she's
33:34
going to make a great candidate, and she's going to make a great county
33:37
commissioner. And she wasn't in the correct district. So for about six or
33:42
eight months, people kept coming to me, please consider it, please consider
33:45
it. And I was looking at it and I thought, you know,
33:49
can I do this? What do I have to offer? And I felt
33:52
that I have the energy, the enthusiasm and innovation and as you're right,
33:55
I mean the last two years have been some ups and downs form me,
34:00
both health wise and you know, working, working in various aspects. So
34:06
I said, I can do this as as county commissioner. And I've been
34:10
around the county, all over the county because I'm there anyway. You know,
34:16
nothing is new to me here really here in the county, and people
34:19
are like, thank you for doing this. It's time for a change.
34:22
So what do you feel the biggest needs of the county? And let's just
34:24
go ahead and let's uh, let's say you are elected county commissioner. On
34:29
day one, you sat down with your legal pad because you'll already have had
34:31
it prepared ahead of time. But let's just say, what what are you
34:35
looking at and seeing the biggert needs of the oontem Well, I don't I
34:37
don't think you point out one. It's all a connection. And when I
34:40
talk about innovation, for me, it's not coming up with this great technical
34:45
thing or this great idea that no one has done before. Here's, for
34:50
instance, as I've been I've been around and learning about what's going on.
34:52
I focus a lot on the eastern part of the county because there's this huge
34:58
recreation plan that is coming that will have equestrian, hiking, biking all different
35:06
areas. And I'm like, this is great because there's this need to not
35:08
let people pass up Kanawha County, especially that area when they're on the way
35:13
to Fayette County to the bridge the new National Park. So from Marmett to
35:19
Guali Bridge, there's this great plan. Here's an idea that I have is
35:23
that they want equestrian area. I went to so we know that. I
35:28
went to a bridge the innovation conference last week and I met or I saw
35:35
what this young woman had come up with, which was a tiny tack which
35:38
is a portable tack box that you take care of horses and you raise it
35:43
up, you put a saddle on. I'm like, wow, well,
35:45
we want a questrian over in the eastern part of the county. I'm like,
35:47
we can get her to be working in recreation over there. Then I
35:51
go and meet another person, Louis Argento, who is giving away grants for
35:54
recreation and tourism. So that's what I'll do on the first day. It's
35:59
like I will necked with with people. I mean, we have so much
36:02
that we have to offer. I mean I don't have to reiterate what the
36:06
mayor and the commissioner Selango said. We're going to focus on on the sports
36:10
complex. That's Charleston, But what about Clendenna where we have the new bike
36:15
path. What about in Tornado where we have another bike area. What about
36:20
the pickle courts, pickleball courts in Nitro. So all of this is what
36:25
excites me. But we also have to focus on the housing crisis. And
36:30
I think that is such a big opportunity. And that's an interesting point that
36:32
you brought that up. I've had Jeroe Ellison from the man Vali and various
36:36
other people that have talked about that. Not only you're in ganog Anty,
36:38
but in the surrounding areas right about the housing shortage. It is a big,
36:43
big issue here. And I just think that we have opportunities because we
36:45
also know we have dilapidated areas. Like my thought is like when I come
36:51
up with things, and this is where you know, when you say my
36:52
notepad is written down, here's where I'm going to go. You know as
36:55
I'm learning already now you're right. By the time January first, when I'm
37:00
sworn in comes around, I'm going to know where exactly who I'm going to
37:05
go to. But if we can take care of some of the dilapidated homes
37:08
or help a landlord build up, then then by giving them maybe at low
37:15
interest interest free loan they build up, that offers some housing in the area.
37:20
It's just all has to work together. Talking with Natalie Tenant again,
37:24
who's a Democratic candidate for Knawa County Commission, to Dave Allen showing five eighty
37:28

37:37
website is fresh Air Filters dot us or call three zero four for four zero
37:42
one one zero four because everyone deserves fresh air. Natalie, we have a
37:45
few people running for County Commission on the Republican side. On the Democratic side,
37:49
of course, you are facing off in the primary against longtime Commissioner Carper.
37:53
He's been in that office, as I said, for a long time.
37:57
Talk about facing someone who has been in office like that for a long
38:00
time. Well, I mean it is an interesting aspect. And I know
38:05
Commissioner Karper. I love his family. My daughter grew up around his grandsons,
38:09
and his children are wonderful. And I've worked with him on many occasions
38:15
in the Secretary of State's office, so I know the work that he's done.
38:21
I think it's time to pass the torch. It's time to say,
38:23
Natalie, I've done this. I've said a great foundation. You move forward
38:28
and move it on with some of these things that we're talking about. And
38:31
I would bring a different view. Also. I talked about that group of
38:36
women, and I don't want people to vote for me because of this.
38:38
Can you believe that there's never been a woman county commissioner in our state's largest
38:44
populated county. It's like we've now, It's not like we don't have women
38:46
here. I mean we've had some great women, Martha Worley, Martha Walker,
38:50
Kim Kannoff, Virginia King. I think of all those people, we've
38:53
never had a woman. And so what I bring is just that diversity,
38:59
I mean, in that inclusion. That's what that's what people would probably say
39:04
about me as Secretary of State with a lot of the projects I did in
39:07
the innovation that I did there and helping businesses. It's just about inclusion.
39:13
And I offer that, you know, among the four candidates, well,
39:17
obviously I think of the best because we're supposed to think that way. I
39:21
mean, that's why you put your name on the ballot. And I just
39:23
think that I've had some rough and tumbles, and I understand what it's like
39:30
to work together and put aside any differences. You and I are sitting here,
39:37
and I really I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. And
39:39
I just think that I can, I can work with anyone, and you
39:43
know of that age and understanding where I can talk about as we mentioned,
39:49
you know you you held the office of secretary of State. What did you
39:53
learn in that office that you think will transition to making you a good accounting
40:00
Oh that's a that's a great question. Every day I learned something. I
40:05
love the idea of not being the smartest person in the room, because boy
40:08
does that get boring, Like I want I want to hear what some ideas
40:13
are and and I've learned how to even even conduct meetings, like like,
40:17
I'll have ideas, Like you can see how many like something pops up in
40:21
me, like, oh, oh, I got an idea, But I
40:22
have to learn to say, let me hear what everyone else says first,
40:27
because I don't want you to think that it's mine because I came up with
40:30
it. We're going to do it. That's obviously the case. The case
40:34
there. I've learned that I've learned about inclusion, but that's always been a
40:37
case. Really when I talk about being the youngest of seven, you always
40:40
I mean, I just always think that there's supposed to be a lot of
40:44
people around me, and we're all supposed to to get our part, because
40:45
that's the way I was raised. I think that you have to be open,
40:52
Like I use this term open and engaging government as Secretary of State.
40:54
Now it's like it's called transparency. I'm like, oh, I just called
40:59
it open and engaging government, and I think that you need to be held
41:01
accountable also, So those are I mean, there's just so many things that
41:06
I learned from that. And if you are upfront with your staff too,
41:10
and that's what I told them first day in the secretary of State's office.
41:14
I won't do anything. I won't knowingly make you do anything illegal, immoral
41:19
or unethical. You know, we may have some trip ups, but we
41:22
will we will work with that together and we will be open together. Talk
41:27
about the campaign. How's the band? You've been out knocking doors, I
41:30
mean, doing meet the candidates for him. You have a little bit of
41:32
advantage because I find it hard to believe that there's anybody that doesn't know who
41:36
you are. But there may be that those people that that don't know.
41:39
So what's your campaign strategy been? Like? You know, the third thing
41:44
that they know about me, it's Secretary of State. They know that I
41:46
was the mountaineer first, then a television reporter, and then oh yeah,
41:50
yeah, weren't you Secretary? Your obituary is gonna mention the mountaineer, you
41:52
know that, right? Yeah, she did some other stuff too, but
41:57
she was also the exactly exactly, So it's what's camp? Oh? I
42:00
have been everywhere, and I'll go to I'll go to tough situations like you
42:05
know, it was joyous on Wednesday in Clendenen when they cut the ribbon for
42:10
the bike trail. Then I went to Allen Creek where folks are trying to
42:15
recover from a tornado and flooding, and it was an opportunity for them to
42:21
see about ten different agencies or organizations that would help them and go in there.
42:25
And I went in there and I'm like, where do you all think
42:28
that you need to be and what I want to tell folks, And I'm
42:30
going to put on my social media if you've been impacted, please fill out
42:35
the survey that they have and I'll ask you to put it on your website
42:38
and all your social media because when you fill out that survey, it tells
42:43
it lets Feds State know how many people were impacted and how much money we
42:47
might be able to be eligible for. So the more people to do it,
42:51
that was what I took it from that, the more who fill it
42:53
out, the more opportunities we have for help. And that meeting was held
42:57
a couple of nights ago, and I understand that you were in attendance the
43:00
one And what was your takeaway from there? I mean, because you'll be
43:02
doing I mean hope, I want to say you'll be doing a lot of
43:06
that. If act, I'm hoping that you're not doing a whole lot of
43:07
that, because hopefully we don't have that. But but where would you take
43:10
away? See, and here's my other thing too. Okay, So my
43:14
takeaway was they were so happy to be there, like you worry that,
43:16
Oh, are you going as a candidate or are you going as a helper?
43:20
Well, I'm just I'm just a regular person. And they were like,
43:23
thank you so much for being here. You know. CW. Sigmum
43:27
was there, but there was really anybody else from the county, although Deputy
43:31
Sheriff Crawford was there. But I took away. I took away that that
43:37
people just need to be able to talk and I was trying to lead them
43:39
where they think they need to go. Second, here's my other idea.
43:44
I like went up there. I went to Erica Mandy with Red Cross.
43:46
I'm like, Erica, why in the summertime, when it hasn't rained for
43:51
about three weeks or a month, why aren't we digging out these these creeks
43:54
and opening them up so come a flood in the spring, they're not being
44:00
flooded. So that's all we need to do. We need to have that
44:02
vision, and we need to clean out callverts when it's not raining and when
44:06
it's not not when it's too late. So that's what I took away too.
44:08
And I'll tell you, you know, the person I see most on
44:13
the campaign trail is not is not my opponent in the primary, but Chris
44:15
Walter's in the perhaps in the general. I don't know. He had this
44:20
idea of allowing the county to borrow the equipment, to allowing the cities to
44:24
borrow county equipment to clean out things. And I'm like, okay, I'm
44:28
stealing that, and I'll show and I'll give credit. I told you I'm
44:31
of the age and the maturity where we spread it all around. All right,
44:37
give me your social media website. What do you got to Natalie Tennant
44:39
website is Friends of Natalie Tenant dot com. Look for Natalie ten I've got
44:45
a couple of them on Facebook and Instagram. I'm on Twitter, I'm on
44:49
LinkedIn, and I try to, you know, I try to be unique
44:52
in different areas, but sometimes it gets hard. I mean the final thirty,
44:55
which I know is hard sometimes for people like us. But give me
44:59
the final thirty. It's time. Why should someone vote for Natalie Tenant for
45:01
Kannaw County Commissioner. I'm asking people to vote for me. Because one it
45:05
is time for a change, not from what I say, but what I
45:07
hear others say. And remember I was recruited. I will bring my energy,
45:14
my enthusiasm, my ideas and innovation. And I ask people to come
45:19
along with me because I have shown that I'd like to hear other people's ideas.
45:22
I like to hear what they have to talk about. So come along
45:24
with me and help us continue on this upward, upward movement and vote for
45:31
me. Natalie Tennant for Kennaugh County Commission. All right, Natalie, I

48:22
by quickly talking about an event's coming up? I think it's one week from
48:24
tonight at Astorgatto. It's a style show of sorts, something I know nothing
48:29
about. Mary Elizabeth Eckerson is here to talk about it. Merria Elizabeth,
48:31
good morning, How are you hey, Dave? I'm great, thank you,
48:34
thank you for having us this morning. I've got Brent Moles with me,
48:37
my Team six partner, and with Mark Mark and Brittany Tarachi, we
48:42
are hosting Who's Team three. We are hosting a fashion show at astorg Art
48:46
Auto next Friday, April to twenty sixth. We have lots of clothiers that
48:53
are coming to support our effort and we'll be modeling closed from Charlie Cabby,
48:58
Geraniums, Liberty Row to eighteen Yared's Oolah, Lucy Tony, the Taylor East
49:05
Steps and Pink Birch. And if you want tickets, there are one hundred
49:08
and one hundred and twenty five dollars and if you just text the runway to
49:14
four one four four four the runway to four one four four four, you
49:19
can sign up and please join our great fund. We'll be catered by ten
49:24
ten. I mean, we have a really all out event that we have
49:27
and it's all going to be an ass torgado Is that right? Is right?
49:30
Starting at six pm for the United Way. That voice you hear,
49:34
that, that dainty voice that you hear is the voice of Margaret O'Neil from
49:37
you. Now, Hi Margaret, how are you? How are you doing?
49:39
How you doing? So? What is your role in all this?
49:42
Sir? Well, Dave, I am just not much actually really, so
49:45
you know, to be honest, Mary, Well, with these two,
49:49
I can understand why they Mary Elizabeth is the looks, the talent and the
49:53
brains of the operation, and I just try to show up, stay out
49:55
of the way. But yeah, really excited for the opportunity in the fashion
50:00
Oh should be great? All right? So what kind of I mean,
50:00
what kind of fashions are we going to see at the fashion show? Guys?
50:04
I mean springs fashion, we have women's fashion, we have children's fashion,
50:09
we have all age groups. I mean, it will encompass everything from
50:14
small children at let's see Liberty Row to Geraniums, which is an adult like
50:21
me, very mature adult like me. And who are your models? Who
50:24
will be doing the mindling? You're asking all the hard questions, just asking
50:30
Each of the vendors has signed up their own models, but we have we
50:35
have four other teams that are participating and dancing with the Stars for the United
50:38
Way of Central West Virginia, and we have each of those persons will all
50:43
be modeling and during the event and promoting themselves as well. It's kind of
50:49
a list of who's who of Charleston will be walking that runway. So yeah,
50:52
some pretty good names. Yeah. Well, And to vote for Team
50:55
six, which is me and Brent, all you have to do is text
50:59
dance six two seven to one seven seven seven. Now this is just one
51:04
of the teams though, we're just one team. But so, but before
51:07
I get hammered by the other teams, want to say, I'll make time
51:08
available for any of the teams that want to come out here, because I
51:10
know I'm going to catch crap, you know, for somebody stuff. I
51:14
didn't have our team. I'll have any team on it just so happens that
51:16
you guys happen to reach out to me, you know, so all you
51:19
got to people ask me all the time, well how does this person get
51:22
Because they ask, it's it's real simple to answers yes or no. Right,
51:25
yes, I always ask for the and I have an open door policy
51:29
as here. I won't have anybody on the show. Well, we wish
51:32
it the best of luck. I think it's gonna be a great time.
51:34
Give us all the particulars again, we're okay, it's as Auto. It's
51:38
April twenty sixth, six o'clock pm, doors open, one hundred and twenty
51:43
five dollars. No, no, if we didn't clarify, that's which ass
51:45
Torgato is it? Because you got the one over get the used car dealership,
51:49
and then you've also got to do what out on the corridor? Which
51:50
one we want? The beautiful one out on the court. On the court,
51:52
they have it, and I would like to promote asktoorg Auto and this
51:55
piece. They have been so generous with their time, their facility, all
52:00
the accommodations they're making for parking, getting people in and out, and here
52:06
the US great people out there. Thank god. All right, guys,
52:09

52:20

52:30
