- 0:22Speaker 2: the last six games and waking up this morning in
- 0:24Speaker 2: a wildcard spot in the Western Conference. Welcome to Cracking
- 0:28Speaker 2: this morning, on a Friday, January second, with the Cracking
- 0:31Speaker 2: taken on the Vancouver Canucks for the second time this
- 0:34Speaker 2: week and in the second matchup of this regular season,
- 0:38Speaker 2: later start time than usual tonight, puck drops little past
- 0:42Speaker 2: seven thirty pm at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Ever it
- 0:46Speaker 2: fits you, Al Koniski on the call, I'll join you
- 0:49Speaker 2: seven o'clock back at Network Central for all the action
- 0:52Speaker 2: art course on ninety three three KJARFM and the Global
- 0:56Speaker 2: Credit Union Craken Audio Network. We will hear from Matty
- 1:00Speaker 2: in his reaction after last night's victory over the Nashville
- 1:04Speaker 2: Predators and Veneers's game continuing to pick up even more.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We'll hear from.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Maddie Banier's plus get the lowdown from Satire Shaw, Canucks
- 1:13Speaker 2: radio host as well on sports Nets six point fifty
- 1:16Speaker 2: and we'll talk more about the Quinn Hughes trade in
- 1:19Speaker 2: their outlook with this Western Conference playoff picture shaping up
- 1:23Speaker 2: in the Canucks with the immittally a steep hill to
- 1:26Speaker 2: climb right now to get back into this mix, yet
- 1:29Speaker 2: pulling off the trade which also involves a big parts.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Of their future. Satire Shaw joining us in just a bit.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well, flashing back to last night, the Kraken made sure
- 1:39Speaker 2: the fireworks didn't stop after midnight on New Year's Day,
- 1:44Speaker 2: and hold the.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Point I've been shot.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Maddie veneers out in front.
- 1:56Speaker 3: He snaps a night game.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Gold routs and na see up cracking take a one
- 2:01Speaker 5: nothing lead sixteen twelve to play.
- 2:04Speaker 6: In the first well was Ryker Evans right at the
- 2:06Speaker 6: offensive blue line, who keeps the puck in the zone
- 2:09Speaker 6: with a reach of his stick.
- 2:10Speaker 3: He gets a shot on Debt.
- 2:11Speaker 6: He's not looking to score from there, He's looking for
- 2:13Speaker 6: something on net. If Manny peers in front with the deflection,
- 2:17Speaker 6: one upping.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Crash Slash sets.
- 2:27Speaker 3: The big rig with a big goal.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Midway through Perry and one, Seattle with a two nothing lead.
- 2:34Speaker 6: Well, very similar to the first goal. The first goal
- 2:36Speaker 6: was Ryker Emits keeping the pucket. This time it gets
- 2:39Speaker 6: back to Alexiak. He looks to his left and I
- 2:42Speaker 6: think that was enough for YUC Sorrows.
- 2:44Speaker 3: To maybe move a little bit.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Then Alexiak puts it on Debt, which finds its way
- 2:48Speaker 6: through traffic.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Two nothing Bracket, Seattle, back yet off the face of sky,
- 3:00Speaker 5: the captain down the left wing, a squabble in front,
- 3:05Speaker 5: not e Veneers leads the handshake line.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Three nothing Seattle.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Everybody got a touch on it as well, but it
- 3:12Speaker 6: was a good crash to the Debt and everybody put
- 3:16Speaker 6: the second shot on det and it was finally Mattypaneers
- 3:18Speaker 6: and founded the blue paint push it home.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Three nothing Cracket.
- 3:23Speaker 2: That three goal first period enough to knock out the
- 3:26Speaker 2: Nashville Predators for one, Jared mccannon adding a third period
- 3:30Speaker 2: empty net goal, answering Roman Yosi's power play goal back
- 3:34Speaker 2: in period two with the Krake and improving to five
- 3:38Speaker 2: and two in seven games at home over Nashville and
- 3:41Speaker 2: taking the first matchup of the regular season series. Needless
- 3:45Speaker 2: is say matters have turned very much for the better
- 3:49Speaker 2: in the last couple of weeks. Even without the likes
- 3:51Speaker 2: of Jaden Schwartz and Brandon Montour in the crack and
- 3:54Speaker 2: lineup for starters, the penalty kill has been lights out,
- 3:58Speaker 2: allowing just one power play goal over the last five games,
- 4:01Speaker 2: and that was Yosi's power play goal last evening.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Maddie but Here is also picking up his.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Third multi goal effort of the regular season and just
- 4:10Speaker 2: falling short of his first career hat trick. But Benier's
- 4:14Speaker 2: very bullish on the Kraken and their penalty kill and
- 4:17Speaker 2: his reaction after last night's win speaking with the media.
- 4:20Speaker 8: I mean, kill did a great job right out of
- 4:21Speaker 8: the gate. You know, that can go one of two ways.
- 4:24Speaker 8: We got a little met him from that, and then
- 4:25Speaker 8: we put a couple in. Yeah, it's you know, I
- 4:28Speaker 8: think we we haven't been in that situation too much,
- 4:31Speaker 8: so we'll get, you know, hopefully a little bit more
- 4:32Speaker 8: used to playing with that lead and trying to keep pushing.
- 4:36Speaker 8: But you know, we could we got a done closed
- 4:38Speaker 8: it out and there's a good one when you.
- 4:40Speaker 9: Talk about playing with the lead, like what what is
- 4:43Speaker 9: what are some of the challenges of doing that?
- 4:45Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, I think you sit back for me
- 4:47Speaker 8: a little bit. Guys, get a little bit more you know,
- 4:49Speaker 8: offensive minded, you know, which isn't a bad thing, but
- 4:52Speaker 8: you gotta obviously take care of your own end and
- 4:54Speaker 8: make sure you're not turning pucks over and giving them
- 4:57Speaker 8: free offense. So you know, we did that a little bit,
- 4:59Speaker 8: but I thought we cleaned it up after a few
- 5:01Speaker 8: chances and and closed it out.
- 5:03Speaker 10: I've seen the fourth line role for you know, second
- 5:05Speaker 10: game in a row.
- 5:06Speaker 11: Now, how do they impact the arrest of the group?
- 5:08Speaker 8: You guys, they've been awesome, you know, night every night, honestly,
- 5:13Speaker 8: you know, they've been creating chances, you know, O zone
- 5:16Speaker 8: shifts after ozone shifts, you know, setting up the next
- 5:19Speaker 8: line for you know, a good O zone shift. So
- 5:23Speaker 8: they've they've been awesome, bring in energy, physicality, uh, kind
- 5:27Speaker 8: of everything you want in your fourth line. So they
- 5:30Speaker 8: can't say enough great things about him.
- 5:31Speaker 10: How's your two goals happen from your perspective?
- 5:35Speaker 8: Yeah, for I mean, first one just kind of hit
- 5:39Speaker 8: my stick tipped in front. And then the second one,
- 5:40Speaker 8: you know, Cat made a great play across the tabs
- 5:42Speaker 8: and yeah, I just went to the neat and I
- 5:45Speaker 8: was just sitting there, so I just poked it in,
- 5:47Speaker 8: you know, not not super pretty, but they all count.
- 5:51Speaker 8: So I had a good look at the hat check
- 5:52Speaker 8: at the end the yeah, you know close.
- 5:55Speaker 10: What do you think about Groovy's game tonight?
- 5:57Speaker 8: He's been awesome. Yeah, Groovey's been an out rocking net.
- 6:01Speaker 8: You know, no noising goals, even their one goal is
- 6:04Speaker 8: an absolute rep top shelf from from walking down the
- 6:07Speaker 8: slot right. And he made a couple of staves that
- 6:10Speaker 8: he might not you know, he's might not supposed to
- 6:12Speaker 8: be making out there tonight. So you know, every time
- 6:15Speaker 8: he's been in he's been awesome. And yeah, both our goalies.
- 6:19Speaker 10: Have on that front.
- 6:20Speaker 12: That sequence Lady makes to save a couple of rebound
- 6:22Speaker 12: chances there when they're trying to get back in it
- 6:24Speaker 12: to have him kind of standing there like that, and
- 6:26Speaker 12: how big is that you get?
- 6:27Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 6:27Speaker 5: Huge?
- 6:27Speaker 8: I think it happened like twenty two or three times.
- 6:29Speaker 8: Uh kind of nuts man. When we were you know,
- 6:31Speaker 8: maybe maybe cheating a little bit too much for offense
- 6:33Speaker 8: then we needed to and he you know, comes up huge,
- 6:36Speaker 8: you know, one whack, two whactor, whack, you know, big
- 6:39Speaker 8: pilot the net. Yeah, she was she was awesome.
- 6:41Speaker 2: So again the crack and pick up where they left
- 6:43Speaker 2: off and also dish some payback to Vancouver following three
- 6:46Speaker 2: to two in a shootout back on Monday night at
- 6:50Speaker 2: Climate Pledge Arena. As they gear up for that major
- 6:53Speaker 2: news coming down earlier this morning, involving two more cracking
- 6:57Speaker 2: players and the upcoming Winter Olympics.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Seattle off a change. Here's Tolban.
- 7:03Speaker 7: It shoots scors Elle Tolman and off the bench, stumbles
- 7:09Speaker 7: his way to the right circle and our wrister in
- 7:12Speaker 7: past Askarov.
- 7:14Speaker 6: It's a one nothing Seattle kracking lead, thirteen oh eight
- 7:17Speaker 6: to play. In the second Ranker Evans seem to get
- 7:19Speaker 6: across Janny Newman, Madu Evans down.
- 7:22Speaker 7: The slot shot tip scor.
- 7:28Speaker 4: A shot from Ryker Evans redirected in by Coppo Cocko
- 7:34Speaker 4: and the Kraken on the power play take a two
- 7:37Speaker 4: to one lead two forty four to play.
- 7:40Speaker 6: In the second was a great keep by the Cell,
- 7:43Speaker 6: cracking right at the blue line. It got over, it
- 7:45Speaker 6: got over to uh Ryk Reverends from Newman and then
- 7:49Speaker 6: Evans sold the shot waiting for Coco to get to
- 7:52Speaker 6: the front of the net. Put the puck hard on
- 7:54Speaker 6: the ice Cocko with the redirect it's two one kracking.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Forward Zelly Tolbanan and Coppocco will go play for Team
- 8:01Speaker 2: Finland coming up in the twenty twenty six Games opening
- 8:04Speaker 2: this next month. Cocko, of course with experience from Finland's
- 8:08Speaker 2: Four Nations face off roster a pair of games had.
- 8:11Speaker 3: One assist as well.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Tolvenen, though earning his spot right now after a breakout
- 8:17Speaker 2: month on the Crack and roster, on pace right now
- 8:20Speaker 2: for a new career high and assists and points, and
- 8:23Speaker 2: admittedly a surprise omission from Finland's Four Nations faceoff roster,
- 8:27Speaker 2: but bouncing back to earn a spot in the World
- 8:30Speaker 2: Championships on their roster and now a part of the
- 8:34Speaker 2: Winter Olympics. This will be Tolvenen's second appearance in the
- 8:37Speaker 2: Winter Olympics and Coaco's first as a member of Team Finland,
- 8:41Speaker 2: the two joining Crack and goaltender Philip Grubauer already selected
- 8:46Speaker 2: for Team Germany's roster, so as that new solidifies the Kraken.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Gearing up for another Pacific Division matchup this evening, they
- 8:53Speaker 2: will face the Canucks team with a little more rest
- 8:55Speaker 2: under their belt, they haven't played since Tuesday night, when
- 8:58Speaker 2: they lost six to three to the Philadelphia Flyers, which
- 9:02Speaker 2: has them coming down a little bit off a rush.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Following the Quinn Hughes trade win, they won four consecutive games,
- 9:08Speaker 2: but the Canucks now have lost three of their last
- 9:11Speaker 2: four and that only win was in the shootout in
- 9:13Speaker 2: Seattle back on Monday night. But a big part of
- 9:17Speaker 2: this the Canucks looking to their future, trading their former
- 9:20Speaker 2: captain and defenseman and perhaps one of the greats in
- 9:23Speaker 2: Canucks history, Quinn Ughes to the Minnesota Wild in exchange
- 9:27Speaker 2: for three young players and very good ones as well,
- 9:30Speaker 2: defenseman z boom Fours, Marco Rossi, and Liam Mulgren, along
- 9:34Speaker 2: with the first round draft pick in twenty twenty six.
- 9:38Speaker 2: How that sets the Canucks up here for the future
- 9:40Speaker 2: and their outlook right now in this playoff picture where
- 9:43Speaker 2: they stand six points out of the cut line. Here's
- 9:46Speaker 2: our conversation from Cracking Weekly with Canucks radio host Sat
- 9:50Speaker 2: to our shot.
- 9:51Speaker 11: Well, and I think that's the You know, if you
- 9:52Speaker 11: ask fans in Vancouver, some are more focused on finishing
- 9:56Speaker 11: thirty second.
- 9:56Speaker 10: They want a high draft pick there.
- 9:58Speaker 11: You know, there's been a lot of talk about re
- 10:00Speaker 11: building and the team embracing the suck, so to speak,
- 10:02Speaker 11: and being bad for a few years. But we'll see
- 10:04Speaker 11: if that ultimately happens that way. But I thought last
- 10:07Speaker 11: night the krack And were the better team for the
- 10:09Speaker 11: most part. I thought the Crackning were better in the first.
- 10:11Speaker 11: They're better in the third, and Kevin Lankinin really stole
- 10:14Speaker 11: the show for Vancouver, especially yes, especially in the shoot up,
- 10:17Speaker 11: but also early in the game. I mean, there was
- 10:19Speaker 11: the breakaway right away from Coppococo lank and they made
- 10:22Speaker 11: the glove. Say, Ben Myers had the rush going in
- 10:25Speaker 11: to him, there was a great chance from Eberley. There
- 10:27Speaker 11: was another chance on the power play afterwards as well,
- 10:29Speaker 11: and lank they made some huge stops and you got
- 10:32Speaker 11: to give the Connects credit. I thought they played well
- 10:34Speaker 11: in the second and you never apologize for getting great goaltending,
- 10:37Speaker 11: but I do think it.
- 10:38Speaker 10: Was it was a somewhat of a stolen win to.
- 10:40Speaker 11: Some degree because I thought, you know, the crack And
- 10:42Speaker 11: on the totality of the night were better. And one
- 10:44Speaker 11: thing that crack And I think have done a better
- 10:46Speaker 11: job of, and you guys will know this better than me,
- 10:48Speaker 11: is defensively, they've been pretty good this year for the
- 10:50Speaker 11: most part, now giving up a ton, and I thought
- 10:53Speaker 11: for the most part last night they were superior defensively.
- 10:56Speaker 11: But you know, sometimes you get goaltending, you get some saves,
- 10:58Speaker 11: and some time they scoring. And you know, for Vancouver,
- 11:01Speaker 11: there're twenty ninth now in the league, I believe, and
- 11:03Speaker 11: that can change really quickly. It doesn't look like the
- 11:06Speaker 11: playoffs are a realistic, you know, end goal here for Vancouver,
- 11:11Speaker 11: even the games they won. They're five and two in
- 11:13Speaker 11: their last seven, and you never, you know, you know,
- 11:16Speaker 11: boo the wins because hey, you give the team credit
- 11:19Speaker 11: or finding ways to win. But a lot of it's
- 11:20Speaker 11: been Lanka and being stellarn to shootout. Last game he
- 11:23Speaker 11: won against was against Boston. This game last night against Seattle,
- 11:27Speaker 11: thatcher dem goal was sensational on that five game road trip,
- 11:30Speaker 11: and they've found ways to win because of their goaltending,
- 11:33Speaker 11: and sometimes goaltending a.
- 11:35Speaker 10: Carrier pretty far. But it's also not a recipe for
- 11:37Speaker 10: sustained success game in a game out.
- 11:39Speaker 11: So I'm not sure that Vancouver is ready to launch
- 11:42Speaker 11: off into the playoff race, whereas I think Seattle, at
- 11:45Speaker 11: least they have a real strong backbone with how they
- 11:48Speaker 11: defend and their goaltending for the most part, and whether
- 11:50Speaker 11: that's going to be enough for Seattle to get into
- 11:52Speaker 11: the playoffs, we'll see, But I do think they have
- 11:55Speaker 11: a stronger foundation in terms of the playoff race moving
- 11:58Speaker 11: forward than Vancouver does.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Opinions may vary. What's yours right now?
- 12:02Speaker 11: On the shootout, I mean, I guess I'm a bit
- 12:06Speaker 11: tired of the shootout in general. At the same time,
- 12:10Speaker 11: I know fans in the building seem to like it,
- 12:11Speaker 11: they get into it or whatever. I'm always I'm a
- 12:14Speaker 11: bit of a purist when it comes to sports, Like
- 12:15Speaker 11: I don't mind ties. I think ties are perfectly fine.
- 12:18Speaker 11: I don't mind going to overtime and it ending and
- 12:21Speaker 11: going to a tie.
- 12:22Speaker 10: But I know fans like it.
- 12:23Speaker 11: And you know, having some certainty at the end of
- 12:26Speaker 11: the game. It doesn't you know, it's not the worst thing,
- 12:27Speaker 11: but it's just it's so different overtime and shootout in
- 12:30Speaker 11: the regular season versus the playoffs. It's like two different sports.
- 12:33Speaker 11: So I cannot feel like as soon as we get
- 12:35Speaker 11: through regulation, we don't learn anything about a hockey team
- 12:37Speaker 11: because it's nothing transferable. Once to get into the playoffs
- 12:40Speaker 11: or no shootouts. There's no three on three, so it's
- 12:43Speaker 11: just a bit of a circus. But it's for entertainment,
- 12:45Speaker 11: so I don't have a problem with it. But generally
- 12:47Speaker 11: I'm I'm kind of fine with ties and not having
- 12:50Speaker 11: to go through all the extras.
- 12:52Speaker 10: Here, let's talk about rivalry for a second.
- 12:54Speaker 12: I'm not sure what Vancouver's perspective is on this, but
- 12:57Speaker 12: I think Seattle and Vancouver are starting to get a
- 12:59Speaker 12: fair the good rivalry is John Shorthouse coined, iye rivalry, Yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 12: you know, and mccannon and Connor Garland kind of got
- 13:08Speaker 12: that going last night as well in that game. What's
- 13:11Speaker 12: the sense from your side is this? Is this something
- 13:13Speaker 12: that's been kind of simmering for the past five seasons
- 13:17Speaker 12: since the Crack and camer League. Is it is it growing?
- 13:19Speaker 12: What are your thoughts?
- 13:21Speaker 11: I'd say it would be kind of simmering a little bit,
- 13:23Speaker 11: and it's one of those things where we are seeing
- 13:25Speaker 11: some more, you know, the games are a bit more
- 13:29Speaker 11: heated between the two rifles. I think every game we
- 13:31Speaker 11: see now there is an extra edge to it, and
- 13:33Speaker 11: I know maybe Meyer's got to go in with those
- 13:35Speaker 11: with his hits on Viniers a couple of years back,
- 13:37Speaker 11: and I know he's been persona non grata in Seattle,
- 13:39Speaker 11: and I think those are great things because it creates,
- 13:41Speaker 11: you know, the animosity from the fan base and the
- 13:44Speaker 11: players that I think that adds an extra passion. So
- 13:46Speaker 11: it's certainly growing. But I think ultimately for it to
- 13:49Speaker 11: really blossom into this, this incredible rival we were all
- 13:52Speaker 11: waiting for, it has to be a playoff matchup between
- 13:55Speaker 11: the teams, and that's that's what truly elevates it, and
- 13:57Speaker 11: that's when the stakes are at their highest. But there
- 13:59Speaker 11: has been natural built in rivalry being you know, down
- 14:02Speaker 11: the I five and the fact that a lot of
- 14:04Speaker 11: Vancouver rights are super happy that Seattle does have a
- 14:07Speaker 11: hockey team because you know, I've already seen some Canucks
- 14:10Speaker 11: fans because of how things have gone, they're already switching
- 14:12Speaker 11: allegiances and becoming crack and fans.
- 14:15Speaker 10: But I think naturally fans want to get on board
- 14:17Speaker 10: with it.
- 14:18Speaker 11: For players, you're starting to see a bit more of
- 14:20Speaker 11: aid game in a game out. But ultimately what we
- 14:22Speaker 11: need is both these teams to be good at the
- 14:24Speaker 11: same time and make the playoffs and ideally it'd be
- 14:27Speaker 11: great if both these teams are top three in the division,
- 14:29Speaker 11: let's say second and third one year, and they go
- 14:31Speaker 11: headhead in the first round.
- 14:33Speaker 10: I think those are the types of matchups.
- 14:34Speaker 11: When teams are even and they get into that seven
- 14:36Speaker 11: game series, it just elevates everything. It's kind of what
- 14:39Speaker 11: happened with Vancouver and the Minnesota Wild for instance, some
- 14:42Speaker 11: years back, and when they played their playoff series, and
- 14:45Speaker 11: that's when Vancouver became Minnesota's biggest rival. And for a
- 14:47Speaker 11: long time, those two teams really hated each other. And
- 14:50Speaker 11: I think we're always going to have the rivalry because
- 14:53Speaker 11: of the proximity between Vancouver and Seattle. But what we
- 14:56Speaker 11: truly need is a seven game series and these teams
- 14:59Speaker 11: going toe to toe.
- 15:00Speaker 12: Who is Vancouver's biggest rivalry right now?
- 15:05Speaker 11: Well, I mean, considering how bad they've been, it's just
- 15:07Speaker 11: one of those things where you know, other teams don't
- 15:09Speaker 11: view them as the rivals. But I'd say right now
- 15:12Speaker 11: probably Edmonton because they played them last in the playoffs too,
- 15:15Speaker 11: and they had Vancouver's number. But with the Canucks, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 11: having this, you know, the false starts and not having
- 15:21Speaker 11: the sustained success in the playoffs year in a year out.
- 15:24Speaker 11: That's where there was, right, Like for a long time
- 15:26Speaker 11: those Calgary because Vancouver and Calgary would end up meeting
- 15:28Speaker 11: each other in the playoffs every few years. So for
- 15:31Speaker 11: the longest time was like, those are the two teams
- 15:32Speaker 11: that you know, really hated one another. There's always hatred
- 15:35Speaker 11: towards Toronto no matter what. So I think you have that.
- 15:38Speaker 11: But I'd say, if you have to pick one, I'd
- 15:40Speaker 11: say it's Edmonton right now.
- 15:42Speaker 9: It's funny you mentioned Tyler Myers in that hit. I
- 15:44Speaker 9: think between him, Cale mccarr and Martin paspisil the fan
- 15:49Speaker 9: base is starting to slowly pick out a few public
- 15:53Speaker 9: enemies around the league. You know, you mentioned earlier about
- 15:56Speaker 9: the Vancouver Canuck fan base and and and them wanting
- 15:59Speaker 9: to maybe tank for McKenna or whatever the case may be.
- 16:03Speaker 9: When you look at Rutherford and Alvin, I mean, it's
- 16:06Speaker 9: not an easy job being a GM of a Canadian team.
- 16:10Speaker 9: How do they manage those expectations from the fan base
- 16:17Speaker 9: wanting success and wanting a cup obviously, to trying to
- 16:20Speaker 9: avoid a full tear down and rebuilding on the fly.
- 16:25Speaker 9: What have you seen from that player development roster development
- 16:29Speaker 9: standpoint that leads you to believe that maybe this is
- 16:33Speaker 9: the right path or should they just go full San Jose,
- 16:37Speaker 9: tear it down to the studs and then be good
- 16:39Speaker 9: for twenty years after that?
- 16:41Speaker 11: Well, I think a big part of it is the
- 16:44Speaker 11: mandate at the end of the day, comes from the
- 16:45Speaker 11: very top of the organization, and do you have an
- 16:49Speaker 11: ownership group that's willing to go through that type of pain?
- 16:51Speaker 11: Because ultimately, when it comes to tear down rebuild, managers, coaches,
- 16:55Speaker 11: players can have opinions, but ultimately the person writing the
- 16:58Speaker 11: checks is the one that's going to have to decide.
- 17:00Speaker 11: Am I willing to go through the suffering for X
- 17:03Speaker 11: amount of years and looking at something that might take
- 17:05Speaker 11: the better part of five years. And ultimately that's the
- 17:08Speaker 11: person that has to be on board for that type
- 17:09Speaker 11: of rebuild to happen.
- 17:11Speaker 10: I also think Rutherford and.
- 17:13Speaker 11: Honestly, you know, to be Frank, I don't think any
- 17:16Speaker 11: general manager in the NHL for the most part, or
- 17:19Speaker 11: president truly wants to tear their team down to the studs.
- 17:22Speaker 11: You mentioned San Jose, and yeah, I mean they ended up,
- 17:24Speaker 11: you know, getting down to the studs.
- 17:26Speaker 10: A lot of it was bad contracts too.
- 17:27Speaker 11: It was you know, they kind of got stuck in
- 17:29Speaker 11: the mud, and especially when they traded away all those
- 17:31Speaker 11: picks to get Eric Carlson, and they had no choice
- 17:33Speaker 11: but to embrace where what they were facing. And now
- 17:36Speaker 11: they're finally growing out of it and you're seeing you know,
- 17:39Speaker 11: the upswing, but they haven't made the playoffs of twenty nineteen.
- 17:41Speaker 11: And we heard the owner now too long ago, have
- 17:44Speaker 11: an interview and talk about how disappointed he was about
- 17:47Speaker 11: what happened some years back. And there's still, you know,
- 17:49Speaker 11: some trepidation about you need to get better quicker. We
- 17:52Speaker 11: can't have this goal long gone too long. And I
- 17:54Speaker 11: think Rutherford also given his age, that he wants to
- 17:58Speaker 11: whenever he leaves Vancouver because at his age, it's not
- 18:01Speaker 11: like he's going to be here for another decade. So
- 18:03Speaker 11: I think he wants to be in a spot where
- 18:04Speaker 11: he can hand this off in a positive environment or
- 18:07Speaker 11: in a positive direction in a couple of years. And
- 18:09Speaker 11: if you want to look at it from what's the
- 18:12Speaker 11: best way for them to have success. They've done a
- 18:14Speaker 11: good job building Atmospherd and they wanted to call the
- 18:16Speaker 11: couple last year. Their development program has improved by leaps
- 18:19Speaker 11: and bounds. Since Rutherford and Alvin took over, they've done
- 18:22Speaker 11: a good job of finding talent through the cracks. They
- 18:24Speaker 11: haven't had a lot of high picks, but even the
- 18:26Speaker 11: picks they've had, they've done a good job of getting
- 18:28Speaker 11: them to the NHL. We're seeing Tom Blander and Elias
- 18:32Speaker 11: Peterson the defenseman come in he was a third round
- 18:35Speaker 11: draft pick. Even Jonathan Lecermack, he's shown some promise college
- 18:39Speaker 11: free agency've signed like a Maxson, he's becoming an everyday player.
- 18:43Speaker 11: And they've been able to even develop players like Elena's Carlson,
- 18:46Speaker 11: who was here prior but they finally work with them
- 18:49Speaker 11: in Abosford and now he's becoming at the very least
- 18:51Speaker 11: a player that can play down your lineup. So if
- 18:53Speaker 11: you look at her from what they've done in terms
- 18:56Speaker 11: of finding talent and drafting players and developing them, you
- 19:00Speaker 11: should have some confidence that this group is able to
- 19:03Speaker 11: do those things. The question is can you do within
- 19:06Speaker 11: the time frame you're hoping to get it done, because
- 19:08Speaker 11: they're hoping that we might be bad this year and
- 19:11Speaker 11: perhaps maybe next year is not where we want it
- 19:13Speaker 11: to be, but we want to be able to turn
- 19:14Speaker 11: up into two to three years and be a competitive team. Again,
- 19:18Speaker 11: that might be a tight timeline to turn things around.
- 19:21Speaker 11: But if they do nail the draft and keep developing
- 19:23Speaker 11: their players, there might be an outside chance of that happening.
- 19:26Speaker 11: But ultimately, you know, teams in NHL, they don't fully
- 19:29Speaker 11: tear down for the most part. Like even look at
- 19:32Speaker 11: people love the Montreal example, Well Montreal still traded for
- 19:34Speaker 11: first round picks. You know, the trader for Alex Neuhook,
- 19:37Speaker 11: the trader for Kirby Dog. They have two first round
- 19:39Speaker 11: picks to get no adoptions. Now adopts is incredible. Hunston too,
- 19:43Speaker 11: I mean drafted him, But that's kind of the way
- 19:45Speaker 11: it goes, right, Like, you know, teams don't want to
- 19:48Speaker 11: be in the basement for seven eight years. They still
- 19:50Speaker 11: want to be able to turn it around relatively quickly.
- 19:53Speaker 11: So I don't think what Vancouver is doing is you know,
- 19:56Speaker 11: divergent from most teams face what they're faced with a
- 20:00Speaker 11: passionate hockey market like Vancouver. I think people want to
- 20:03Speaker 11: see the team be a trendsetter in some ways and
- 20:05Speaker 11: embrace something that teams normally don't. But organizationally, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 11: I think the best path forward is drafting, and at
- 20:11Speaker 11: the very least this management groups shown a good track
- 20:14Speaker 11: record of drafting and developing players.
- 20:16Speaker 2: As a part of what they're trying to build from
- 20:19Speaker 2: the foundation. They get three pretty good players here out
- 20:22Speaker 2: of one of the biggest blockbuster deals I think in
- 20:25Speaker 2: years in the NHL, in Liam Ogrin, Marco Rossi and
- 20:28Speaker 2: ze Buuyam, and of course Quinn use out the door
- 20:31Speaker 2: as a result. But sat tire or where do you
- 20:33Speaker 2: put the Quinn use trade versus others you've seen over
- 20:37Speaker 2: the years, And is it fair to call Zeev Booyam
- 20:40Speaker 2: Quinn used light.
- 20:42Speaker 11: I don't want to put that on Zeve because I
- 20:44Speaker 11: think Quinn is just Zeeve has been really good. Honestly,
- 20:47Speaker 11: the seven games he's played, he's rushing the puck well.
- 20:50Speaker 10: I think his.
- 20:50Speaker 11: Defensive game has been a bit more mature than I
- 20:52Speaker 11: expected it would be, considering he's a twenty year old
- 20:55Speaker 11: rookie in the NHL. But Quinn's a one of one.
- 20:58Speaker 11: I mean, nobody in the league skates the way Quinn
- 21:00Speaker 11: Hughes does. Nobody in the league plays the way Quinn does.
- 21:02Speaker 11: And that's not to say he's the best player. The
- 21:04Speaker 11: best defenseman in the league.
- 21:05Speaker 10: But he's unique.
- 21:06Speaker 11: It's him and mcarr And even if William hits his potential,
- 21:10Speaker 11: he may not be you know, one or two levels
- 21:12Speaker 11: compared to where Quinn is. So I don't want to
- 21:15Speaker 11: put that on Zeve. And I think there's a uniqueness
- 21:18Speaker 11: to how Quinn skates. Zee might actually be a little
- 21:21Speaker 11: quicker in a straight line. He might be more explosive
- 21:24Speaker 11: in a few years. But where Quinn dusts everybody in
- 21:27Speaker 11: the league as his edge work, I mean, he's he's
- 21:28Speaker 11: almost like a ballet dancer on the ice.
- 21:30Speaker 10: It's just incredible what he's able to do.
- 21:32Speaker 11: I mean his mom was a figure skater two so
- 21:34Speaker 11: I think you know, he learned these these this trade
- 21:37Speaker 11: at a really young age, and he's so elusive. I
- 21:40Speaker 11: think there's nobody that can compare it to Quinn in
- 21:41Speaker 11: terms of how he skates. Like mccarr is more direct
- 21:44Speaker 11: and powerful and dynamic and has a bit more power.
- 21:47Speaker 10: In how he plays.
- 21:48Speaker 11: But Quinn's just elegance he plays with So I can
- 21:50Speaker 11: never put that on anybody.
- 21:51Speaker 10: I think it's unfair to.
- 21:52Speaker 11: Zeve, but he has potential to be a top pair,
- 21:55Speaker 11: you know, perhaps franchise changing changing defenseman, and I think
- 22:00Speaker 11: where Vancouver kind of finds itself now after having made
- 22:03Speaker 11: the trade. I think it is a fair value because
- 22:06Speaker 11: you're never getting, you know, one for one replacement when
- 22:08Speaker 11: you're trade a player like Quinn. But I do think
- 22:10Speaker 11: it's the biggest trade we've seen since the cap Era
- 22:15Speaker 11: started in two thousand and five. There's been some big
- 22:17Speaker 11: trades like Joe Thornton got moved, of course, but the
- 22:20Speaker 11: return I don't think looks anywhere close to what bank
- 22:22Speaker 11: who ended up getting it was Brad Stewart, Marco Sturm.
- 22:26Speaker 11: I think Wayne Primo came over from San Jose to
- 22:29Speaker 11: Boston in that trade.
- 22:30Speaker 10: The rant in the trade last year.
- 22:31Speaker 11: I think was maybe the second biggest or the biggest
- 22:34Speaker 11: when he got moved from Martin, Natchez and then moved
- 22:36Speaker 11: again to Carolina. But I'd say in the cap Era,
- 22:39Speaker 11: this was the biggest trade that we have seen, and
- 22:42Speaker 11: perhaps the best player to get traded, since you know,
- 22:45Speaker 11: you have to go back to prior to the cap Era.
- 22:47Speaker 11: I mean Vancouver traded Pablo Burrey to Florida. I think
- 22:51Speaker 11: that kind of ranked similar in that type of range,
- 22:53Speaker 11: like one of the single best players in the league
- 22:55Speaker 11: at his position.
- 22:56Speaker 10: Getting moved just.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Reminded me also of Tamuslani from Winnipeg to Anah.
- 23:00Speaker 10: Yeah, that one had a huge one as well. Yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 10: and those are the types of you know, earth chattery moves.
- 23:05Speaker 11: I mean, you're talking about guys for Hall of Fame
- 23:07Speaker 11: level talents and you know, and they don't usually get
- 23:10Speaker 11: traded in their prime, like Quinn's like firmly right in
- 23:12Speaker 11: his prime and that's when you got moved.
- 23:14Speaker 10: You don't see that very often.
- 23:16Speaker 9: I've heard a lot of people talk about this trade
- 23:19Speaker 9: and I want to ask you, would you consider Quinn Hughes.
- 23:22Speaker 9: Is he the best Canuck in history? And I've seen
- 23:25Speaker 9: that flying around. You know, the Canucks out of here
- 23:28Speaker 9: trading are best player that we've ever had. And I'm like, well,
- 23:31Speaker 9: the Sadems are pretty good.
- 23:32Speaker 10: Yea Bongo was pretty good.
- 23:34Speaker 9: You guys, there's some guys hanging up in the rafters
- 23:36Speaker 9: at Rogers that are pretty good. Not saying Quinn is not,
- 23:39Speaker 9: but in the history of the Knucks, is Quinn Hughes
- 23:43Speaker 9: number one?
- 23:44Speaker 11: I think you could argue he is in terms of
- 23:46Speaker 11: pure talent, right, And I think part of the reason
- 23:48Speaker 11: why there is an extra affinity towards Quinn.
- 23:51Speaker 10: Is the Canucks.
- 23:52Speaker 11: Canucks fans have been dying to see the team have
- 23:55Speaker 11: a number one defenseman up until they drafted Quinn. The
- 23:58Speaker 11: conversation in Vancouver always was they've had great teams. They've
- 24:01Speaker 11: had great you know forwards, you know, maybe the best
- 24:03Speaker 11: wing and one of the best in Burrey. They had
- 24:05Speaker 11: the sittings. You know, even looking a guy like Marcus Naslin,
- 24:08Speaker 11: I think he gets lost to you know, a guy
- 24:10Speaker 11: who won the Art Ross one year and the Lester B.
- 24:13Speaker 11: Pearson one year, one of the most prolific scores in
- 24:15Speaker 11: the NHL right before the cap Earro started. But they
- 24:19Speaker 11: never had a defenseman that defined a franchise the way
- 24:22Speaker 11: Quinn did. And you know, fans had always talked about
- 24:25Speaker 11: and even in the media throughout the years that do
- 24:27Speaker 11: you truly win a Stanley Cup unless you get a
- 24:30Speaker 11: bona five number one defenseman? Do you need to have
- 24:32Speaker 11: that type of lynch fin And the Canucks finally got one.
- 24:34Speaker 11: So I do think part of it is it's what
- 24:37Speaker 11: fans and a lot of people have been longing for
- 24:39Speaker 11: for forty plus years for the team to find a
- 24:42Speaker 11: player like Quin.
- 24:43Speaker 10: So they finally got him.
- 24:44Speaker 11: So I do think there's also the recency bias because
- 24:46Speaker 11: he's the latest one here.
- 24:48Speaker 10: It's an argument.
- 24:49Speaker 11: I mean, you can argue him Burrey the Citings, but
- 24:52Speaker 11: you can certainly craft an argument that Quinn is the
- 24:54Speaker 11: single most talented player this franchise ever had.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Our big thanks again to sat tr Shaw, radio host
- 25:01Speaker 2: for the Vancouver Canucks on Sportsnets six point fifty up
- 25:04Speaker 2: in Vancouver. More of that conversation, by the way, available
- 25:07Speaker 2: on the latest Cracking Weekly. That episode up right now

- 25:13Speaker 2: at Audio Network and sign up for free to get
- 25:16Speaker 2: the app by the way at sports radiokjar dot com. Well,
- 25:20Speaker 2: looking ahead here to this evening the Crack and looking
- 25:23Speaker 2: to get a win again and back to back situations
- 25:26Speaker 2: where they had been a bit better. In the most
- 25:28Speaker 2: recent stretch. Last three games they have either found wins
- 25:31Speaker 2: or points against the New York Islanders, the Los Angeles Kings,
- 25:35Speaker 2: or the Canucks as well, and the Krake in taking
- 25:38Speaker 2: a run of four straight wins into Vancouver. That is
- 25:42Speaker 2: the second longest road win streak for the Kraken against
- 25:45Speaker 2: any opponent, only one.
- 25:47Speaker 3: That's bigger right now.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Five consecutive road wins against the Anaheim Ducks, which began
- 25:52Speaker 2: back in November of twenty twenty two the Crack and
- 25:56Speaker 2: again five ozho one in six games. It is their
- 25:59Speaker 2: fourth Lawe loungest Pointstreek in franchise history. They're two away
- 26:03Speaker 2: from reaching eight, which is tied for second best that
- 26:07Speaker 2: was reached on to separate occasions back in November to
- 26:10Speaker 2: December of twenty twenty two and January twenty twenty three
- 26:15Speaker 2: as well. They face a Canucks team that has played
- 26:17Speaker 2: from behind a ton this season. To note, thirty two
- 26:21Speaker 2: games Vancouver has trailed in that's over eighty percent of
- 26:24Speaker 2: their games this season. They are nine twenty and three
- 26:27Speaker 2: in that mark. Only Philadelphia has trailed in more games
- 26:30Speaker 2: this year with thirty three. Cracking again ending back to
- 26:34Speaker 2: back games, and it doesn't get much easier after this,
- 26:37Speaker 2: of course, because they have seventeen games on the slate
- 26:39Speaker 2: here for this month. It will have two days off
- 26:42Speaker 2: and then come right back for more back to back
- 26:44Speaker 2: action Monday in Calgary. Back home again Tuesday against the
- 26:49Speaker 2: Boston Bruins. But as far as this evening, we hope
- 26:51Speaker 2: that you can join us once again late start time.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Take note seven point thirty from Rogers Place. We're on
- 26:58Speaker 2: air seven o'clock for all the action across the global
