- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This town does not seem to be looking too great.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Barbecue area.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: And what is this?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Been smashed.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: More graffiti.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: I mean look at the signs.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Needles and sharps disposal.
- 0:16I was about to say that's abandoned but I just saw someone
- 0:19going into that shop there.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: This branch is now permanently closed.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Look at the state of this.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: Dumping ground it looks like.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: That's gonna collapse at some point.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, there's stuff in there, look.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Hold on, we've got to stop for a moment to appreciate this sign here.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: To kick off this season's city tours then around the UK and Europe,
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I wanted to begin in the south of England.
- 0:46And these are twin towns which are very interesting because
- 0:50they used to be some of
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: the wealthiest towns in the country.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And since the business and the money left the towns,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: they are now the poorest towns in the poorest county of the UK.
- 1:03I think a very powerful lesson here for what's happening with
- 1:07the UK government.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Because as the UK government continues to overtax,
- 1:14overregulate and drive away business owners and entrepreneurs
- 1:18from the country with
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: these new draconian laws and tax rules coming in,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: this is what we could see for the rest of the country.
- 1:27Because when the money leaves,
- 1:30the tax base reduces,
- 1:32there's less money in circulation.
- 1:34and it causes towns and cities that were once very wealthy and
- 1:39have a lot of
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: industry,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: a lot of money,
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: to fall very,
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: very quickly.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: What is that on the other side of the street?
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: It's like a junkyard or something in someone's garden there.
- 1:52Okay,
- 1:52it's a very rainy day here,
- 1:54but already this town does not seem to be looking too great.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: We've got closed stores everywhere so far.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: so far I'm just seeing a lot of retail space available,
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: a lot of closed businesses,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: and a lot of people driving crazy.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: But let's take a walk down then.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: More ways to talk, that mural says there.
- 2:18And then we just got a lot of graffiti everywhere and posters
- 2:22and things like that.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Everything seems to be gated up as well, which doesn't say much.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Looks like someone smashed this window in here.
- 2:50and this as well has been smashed interesting it's a bit of a
- 2:55rainy day here today
- 2:57so we're probably not going to see many people out because it
- 3:01is windy and it is
- 3:02rainy everything just looks boarded up continuing the walk then
- 3:12we'll go into the
- 3:13town center now i'm not sure what this was i mean that's from
- 3:18july look that poster
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Look at this.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: It's that coffee station on the left.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Guys, this is not looking good so far.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: I've only just started filming already.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: I guess this was quite beautiful at one time.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Just goes to show what happens when the money leaves a place.
- 4:02look it says this is for sale actually whatever this was at one
- 4:09time all concreted
- 4:13over now no idea what this was nice building though let's go on
- 4:19to this side of the
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: road now we got some rubbish on the floor we got another closed business
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Now what's interesting about this statue here,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: we'll have a look in a second,
- 4:38is that Redroof and Camborn were once not the poorest towns in
- 4:43the poorest county,
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: but they were actually the wealthiest towns because of the mining.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Think of today the AI rush.
- 4:52Well,
- 4:52this was back in the day,
- 4:53sort of 18th,
- 4:5419th century,
- 4:56was the mining rush.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: So this is how they made their money.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: This was a very wealthy place.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: from mining.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: It was copper mining predominantly.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Tin and copper mining.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Everything just looks to be a little bit worn.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Got more posters here and whatever.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: No idea what that are.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: I guess these were old ATMs.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Took out the ATMs.
- 5:30bear in mind it is a morning here that i'm recording so that's
- 5:35why you're not
- 5:36seeing many people out and also it's a rainy windy day here but
- 5:42look i mean you
- 5:43can't fake this stuff though because usually people say oh
- 5:46you're recording at 4am
- 5:47or something like that you can't fake this stuff that's all
- 5:50boarded up that's
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: obviously gone whatever that was
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: Over here, that's all boarded up as well.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Someone smashed that window, look.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So this is the, I guess this is the high street.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Another one there to let, so to rent.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Barbers always seem to be doing well though.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Got a barbershop here.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Barbers always seem to do well.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Plenty of pigeons.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: You've got to have your pigeons in a typical high street.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: And of course, a pasty shop.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: You've got to have a pasty shop.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Look at this.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Look at this.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: This has seen better days.
- 7:03If you're enjoying this walk so far,
- 7:05remember to subscribe to the channel.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: It just takes a second.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Plenty of rubbish scattered around.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Is that their recycling?
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's their recycling.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: A creative art space for hire, really.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: That's what happens when the business goes.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You get creative art spaces.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Got a cinema here.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Perhaps you're doing some work.
- 8:13plenty more rubbish here we've got another art installation
- 8:24just here look as they
- 8:26as they call these things these days art installations another
- 8:30barber shop a bit of
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: coming and going in this barber shop
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: This is nice though.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Look at this.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Got some beautiful flowers arrangements here.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Some hanging baskets outside the credit union.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: But then right next to it, look what you've got.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: You've just got a load of bin bags full of rubbish.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: What is going on here?
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: What is all of this?
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Another barber's here.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Plenty of barbers, eh?
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: There's always loads of room for barbers.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: This looks nice here.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look in here.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: See what it is.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: This looks beautiful actually.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: So they've got this little courtyard area here.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: This looks nice actually.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: I guess this was an old church.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think this was an old church at one point.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Obviously it lost the roof.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: and then they just made it an outside courtyard.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: Nice!
- 10:08Over on the other side of the street then,
- 10:10I don't know if anyone actually lives there.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: But it says,
- 10:12this site improvement was created by the young people of
- 10:15Redruth to celebrate the
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: town's past,
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: present and future.
- 10:20Well,
- 10:20if you look at this,
- 10:21does that really look like a celebration to you?
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: It doesn't look like much of a celebration to me.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: It says, welcome to Redruth, the heart of Cornish mining.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: And yet, what exactly is this?
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Behind here.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: It's all overgrown.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: The building next to it is falling down.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's almost falling down.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Look at the brickwork in the middle there.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Let me zoom in.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: That's going to collapse at some point.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Here we have a bookstore opening soon.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Look at the size of this structure here.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: With rubbish next to it.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Oh and in here.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: What is all of this in here?
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Look at the state of this.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Dumping ground it looks like.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Look at this, look at this.
- 11:29Improving the appearance of this site was voted by the
- 11:32community as a priority.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: It's an interim measure while long-term regeneration is awaited.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: How long has this been here?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: If you're from Redruth, please let me know.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: This doesn't look like it's an interim thing to me.
- 11:47Look at the size of the buddleia and trees and weeds growing
- 11:51out of this thing.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's been here so long it's started to rot.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: It's rotting.
- 12:10what is this the state of this you can see it's actually a
- 12:16beautiful town all the
- 12:20architecture here the old architecture you can see the
- 12:24different time periods as
- 12:25well with it by the by the stone and then over time they've
- 12:31added to it and they've
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: made adjustments to it like this window here
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: So there are some beautiful things here.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, this is what happens when the money leaves a location.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: And believe it or not,
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: in the 18th century,
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Redruth was the largest copper-producing mining town in the world.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Just vast, vast riches in the 18th century.
- 12:58And this continued through to the 19th and even the 20th
- 13:02century,
- 13:02actually.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: But they also mined tin here as well, as well as arsenic.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: So that was used in dyes and pesticides, things like that, arsenic.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: So they mined tin even before copper and after copper as well.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: So the riches that were so vast.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And actually,
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: quite interestingly,
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: they've started to find more mining deposits yet again in this area.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So the area of Redruth and Cambod.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Lots of art installations, as I like to call them.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Very rainy today.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: What do we have in here then?
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: I'm not exactly sure.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: It kind of looks abandoned here.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe some new development about to go on.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Wow, it is windy.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of ivy that's been growing for years, decades probably.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: OK.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Barbecue area.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: And what is this?
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Some sort of dumping ground by the looks of things.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: So sad to see all of these old churches looking like this.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So sad indeed.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: I'm sure back in the day this was a really really nice town.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it was.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it was beautiful back in the day.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: But you can just see now.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: It's just beauty salons, hair, barbers, funeral homes.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And a lot of boarded up shops everywhere.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's take a walk down this street then.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, first one we're seeing is not looking good.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Got a hair place on the right.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Gyms, whatever gyms is.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: Looks like it sort of does a bit of everything.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Got a car park down there.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Nice old stone monuments here.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Quite neglected.
- 16:06I think some of the,
- 16:08oh another barber shop,
- 16:10how many barbers do you need in one town?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: I think some of these businesses are seasonal as well,
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: so we're out of season at the moment,
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: hence why some of them are closed,
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: although some of them are just closed permanently,
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: nothing to do with the season.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: It does look like they're doing some development though,
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: if I turn the camera around here and show you.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: There's a ton of graffiti,
- 16:33but it looks like there's a spot here they're going to develop
- 16:36because there's some
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: newer houses in the background with all solar panels,
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: of course.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Okay, here we go then.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Walking into Cambon here.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Look at the sign.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: We've got to stop for a moment to appreciate this sign here.
- 16:58I think that tells you everything you need to know about a town
- 17:02when their sign
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: looks like that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: We've got some beautiful architecture here on the windows.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Camborn Library.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: That's a beautiful building, that is.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: Really nice building.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: And then on the right here, this says, it was the old fire station.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: But look at this lamppost and the sign.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: They really need to hire some street cleaners, really.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: But look at this beautiful old fire station here.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Let's walk into the
- 17:46main town then and see what's going on i'm on the outskirts of
- 17:51the town now then
- 17:52walking in so far it doesn't look too bad from the reports that
- 17:57i had saying that
- 17:59this place was quite rough doesn't look too bad so far so let's
- 18:06keep walking
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: without getting run over
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Just looks like an old seaside town to me.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Gosh, it's pouring down with rain here.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I'm going to look like a drowned rat by the end of this.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: But yeah, we got some, I mean, we got some clothes.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 18:24SPEAKER_00: We got some clothes stores here.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: So we've got the first of the clothes stores behind me.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a wet one.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a wet one today.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of old mining.
- 18:41These are old mining cottages down here that they've converted
- 18:45by the looks of things.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, everything looks to be closed.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: But then again, it is a morning.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: It is wet.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: It is windy.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So a lot of the local business owners,
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know,
- 18:58maybe they just decided not to open today because they probably
- 19:01thought they
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: wouldn't get any business.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Look in here.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Just walking by some of these gardens.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Just rubbish everywhere.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: So we got a Chinese, looks like it's gone.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: Tattoo place.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: All the good stuff.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Another barbers.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: How many barbers does this area need?
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Here we go, some more rubbish here.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: Why do people just put all of their rubbish in the front gardens now?
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: I've noticed this pattern throughout England.
- 19:41SPEAKER_00: People just seem to pile up rubbish in their front garden.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Looks like an old bar or something there.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Another unit to let.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: This was a massage place.
- 19:58more graffiti okay we're getting close to the town center by
- 20:04the looks of things
- 20:04now then look at this look at the state of this this looks like
- 20:14a nice building i
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: wonder what this used to be here you can see the time here is 12 o'clock
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: I have to put the time in somewhere.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: You know why,
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: if I don't put the time in somewhere,
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: then people say,
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: he recorded this at four o'clock in the morning,
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: or things like that,
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: because they just don't believe.
- 20:32I don't know why,
- 20:33but sometimes people just don't believe the videos when I walk
- 20:36around.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, here we go.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: It's the Wetherspoons now, then.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Erected by John Francis Bassett in 1866, this building.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: We've got people beeping.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And we've got yet again another barbershop.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Yes, because you can't have too many barbershops in one town.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Cash only, of course, most of these barbershops.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: It's not just here, it's everywhere.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: These barbershops, they're everywhere now.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Just got some guys came out the alleyway there when I was filming.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Not sure what they were up to.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: Gone.
- 21:36If you're enjoying this video remember to subscribe to the
- 21:39channel and also share
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: this with a friend.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look around this square then.
- 21:52Well,
- 21:52there's plenty of gambling shops around,
- 21:54so that shows you what the economy's like.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: We've got a William Hill behind here.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: There's also a bingo hall just up there behind me.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Nice little square here.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: What's this?
- 22:09Some sort of a monument presented to the town of Canbourne by
- 22:13John Holman in 1890.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Looks like a
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Little fountain here.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, that shows you how much money there was.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: If you think how much...
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: I know it would have been back in the day 1890,
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: so you can't compare the price today.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: But if we did an inflation adjustment on this,
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: this would have cost,
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: what,
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: 20 grand or something in today's money to install something like this?
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Maybe more.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe more.
- 22:38it's beautiful it looks like it's in granite here so again it's
- 22:42designed to last a
- 22:44very very long time but yeah this place is uh very worn out and
- 22:50it really does show
- 22:51you what happens when the industry leaves a place like for this
- 22:56town here this
- 22:57region was mining they they were very very wealthy very wealthy
- 23:01indeed from mining
- 23:02and when the industry leaves it shows you what happens the town
- 23:07loses the money
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: And things start to go downhill.
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: Let's take a walk down this side street here then.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: Again, this is probably a church at some point closed down.
- 23:18You're probably fed up of hearing now about churches closing
- 23:21down,
- 23:21but that is the...
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: That is the nature of things now.
- 23:25All the churches have,
- 23:26all these old beautiful churches anyway,
- 23:29have since closed.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Being replaced by now a lot of modern churches.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: I think we're seeing a revival actually in the UK.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: I really do think we're seeing a revival in the church.
- 23:43within the uk which i think is a great thing really bring
- 23:47values back to the uk
- 23:49where the media for so long have just been giving people their
- 23:53values and it
- 23:54obviously hasn't worked because we've never been so divisive as
- 23:59we are today looks
- 24:00like they're building something here then got another one out
- 24:06here then says
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: This shop is now closed.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: We'd like to thank all our staff, customers, etc.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: So there's another one gone.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: This is open.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: We've got our business open.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: And Superdrug is open.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: So there are some businesses open here.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: It looks like we've got more out down here then.
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: M & Co.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: It's all boarded up on the left.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: This branch is now permanently closed.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: That was a Santander bank here, permanently closed.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Another barber shop.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, how many barber shops do you need in one town?
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, look at this old gentleman here ahead.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: He's looking smart, isn't he?
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Looking very smart indeed.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: They don't dress like that anymore, do they?
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: A lot of people.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Another pasty shop here.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: I might grab one, actually, in a minute.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Cafe over there, gone.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: Another beautiful old church, which is now a Costa Coffee.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Here we go, look at that.
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Beautiful, beautiful.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: It's just amazing what we're now seeing.
- 25:57I feel like I'm in one of these dystopian movies walking around
- 26:00a lot of these
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: British towns now,
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: you know?
- 26:03It's like we're living in the relics of the old world,
- 26:08all this beautiful architecture.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: Beautiful, beautiful.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: And now what is it all?
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: It's a Costa coffee shop.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Sad.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: It's very sad, really.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: I just got the middle finger there.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Someone obviously doesn't like me filming.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Just got the middle finger.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, there you go.
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: Got a lot more people out now though.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Still rainy, but we got this over here as well.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It's all gone.
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: Something on the right here.
- 26:41I was about to say that's abandoned,
- 26:46but I just saw someone going into that shop there.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: So that's obviously open.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's a little mini market on the corner there.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: You wouldn't think it though.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: You'd think that was a closed business there.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: More tattoo studios again.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And hair and barber.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: I've lost count now.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: What's that?
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Eight barbers?
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Something like that.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: I don't know how many more barbers we can get in one town.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen anyone in any of them either.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know what's going on in these barbershops.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: How many barbershops is that now?
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: I think was it seven or eight?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: And I haven't seen anyone in these barbershops anyway.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: So I don't know what's going on in these barbershops.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Seven or eight barbershops in one town.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Empty.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: No one in them.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Let's go up here.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: There's a big building ahead of me here.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look what this is.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, another beautiful church again.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: Obviously been closed for some time now.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: Looks like a lot of bird poo there.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah, there we go.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: That's where the birds are.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: More art installations.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Another shop out there.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And another one for sale.
- 28:14SPEAKER_00: I think they're probably best off.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: Just turning all of these old businesses here,
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: these old shopfronts,
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: turning them into accommodation.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Since they're so short of housing,
- 28:25it doesn't make sense that the planning officers would reject
- 28:28so many of these
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: businesses being converted into homes.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: I think that would be the sensible thing to do.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Convert them into a couple of apartments.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: All right, let's have a look what this is then in front of me.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: I spotted this building from right down the street.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's a church.
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: That's what this is.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: 1839, it says there.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: There it is, 1839 on this church.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: What a wet day.
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: I hope it's not like this all the time here.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: But very, very wet day.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: People are obviously not used to cameras here as well.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: I'm getting lots of stairs.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: I've had one middle finger so far.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Not bad.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: More graffiti.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, look at the signs.
- 29:20They need to just get someone around,
- 29:22clean the signs,
- 29:23or even buy some more signs.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It can't cost that much to hire someone for a month.
- 29:31just go around and clean all these signs surely surely it can't
- 29:35cost that much but
- 29:36i will say the people here seem very nice very friendly people
- 29:40i've only had one
- 29:41middle finger lots of stairs one middle finger so that's not
- 29:45too bad at all usually
- 29:47gosh go to london go to bradford go to birmingham i'm running
- 29:51i'm being chased out
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: of the areas
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: What was this?
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Sunday school stone.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Made in 1887.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, look at the quality of the buildings back then.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: 1887 this was built.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Look at it.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: Just beautiful stonework.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay, the joinery, the windows and doors probably need updating.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: But look at the stonework on it.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Beautiful.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Really nice.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Danger anti-climb paint.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: Obviously they've had some issues here.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: There's the graveyard here.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Just taking a walk down the side streets now then and the alley,
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: see if I can spot anything down here,
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: but all seems pretty normal,
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: pretty standard.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: It's like normal housing, really.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: A lot of the miners' cottages.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Very windy, very wet, but that made me laugh as I walked by.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: 36.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Rubbish bin.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: So you just pile it all up there.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 31:03SPEAKER_00: Another barber's up here.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: How many barbers?
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: Seriously?
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: And a betting shop.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: So we've got another betting shop.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: We've got a barber's...
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: Check this out then.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Needles and sharps disposal.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: For the disposal of needles and sharps only,
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: please ensure all sharps are fully inserted into the bin.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Do I even want to look in here?
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Go on.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, there's stuff in there, look.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 31:36okay that's worrying ladies and gents what i just saw there
- 31:39that is worrying
- 31:41they've obviously got some sort of an issue here all right i
- 31:44think it's time to get
- 31:44a pasty now then yeah this guy's got the same idea time to get
- 31:50a pasty i know i'm
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: gonna get i'm gonna get a nice steak pasty here
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: Here we go then.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Nice steak pasty here.
- 32:04SPEAKER_00: Let's get into this and then we'll carry on.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: This guy here is doing a good job keeping the streets clean.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Really good job.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: We've got some activity down here then.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: We've got a Poundland and we've got an Argos,
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: which I think the Chinese are bidding on Argos at the minute,
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: aren't they?
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: So that'll be interesting.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: And here's the front of that building, by the way.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: The John Francis Bassett.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Beautiful, beautiful building now owned by Wetherspoons.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: It's now a pub.
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: The supermarket looks busy anyway.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: A lot of people in the supermarket.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: We've got another church here.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: It just shows you how much money used to be here in Cambon.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: The amount of churches there are.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Let's take a walk down Church Lane here.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Again, just needs a bit of a clean.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: That's all they need.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: A bit of stone cleaner on that.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: It'll come up nicely.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: Here's the churchyard here then.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's a lot of kegs at the back of Wetherspoons here.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: A lot of heavy drinking goes on here in Cambod.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, what's going on there then?
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Look at all those kegs, eh?
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Should we have a walk in the cemetery here then?
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look what's going on.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: Are they maintaining this place?
- 33:49SPEAKER_00: Not really, I'd say.
- 33:52SPEAKER_00: Again, the whole thing...
- 33:54We're sort of seeing a pattern here in Camborne and some of
- 33:57these other towns and cities.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: When the money disappears,
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: people just,
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: there just isn't the same amount of resources to maintain everything,
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: the upkeep.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, hold on.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: What's that?
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Another sharps bin here.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: How many of these are there around here?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they're not upkeeping the cemetery at all.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Look at it.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: It's all overgrown.
- 34:22the headstones are overgrown as well in that those clumps there
- 34:28sad shame really
- 34:31real shame so here we have one of the pumping engine houses
- 34:39this is just on the
- 34:41outskirts of cambourne here then you can see the size of the
- 34:45industry that would
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: have been here and you can see just here this was the boiler house
- 34:51SPEAKER_00: So it would have held, what, four, five boilers?
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Let's have a look, see what this sign tells us.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: Five boilers, each producing steam to power the engine.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: So where we're standing here was the working space.
- 35:06SPEAKER_00: This area here was the working space then.
- 35:10Again,
- 35:10you can see the stonework that's changed over the years with
- 35:14the orange brick here.
- 35:16You've got more sort of quartz granite stone here and then a
- 35:21different stone.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: This will be a local Cornish stone higher up.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: There was a doorway there in the middle that they've bricked up.
- 35:28You can see they've patched it up with a number of different
- 35:31stones and bricks over the years.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: And here we go.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: And behind me was the rag room.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: I could do with that today, actually, because I'm absolutely drenched.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: So that's where they would dry out their clothing there in the rag room.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: But it's quite fascinating.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: I wonder how much energy these boilers use.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: Let me look at the size of them.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: Half a ton of coal an hour to produce enough steam for the engine.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: Half a ton per hour.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: Can you imagine that today?
- 36:05I don't think the climate people would allow half a ton of coal
- 36:09per hour to be
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: burned per engine behind me here to power these engines.
- 36:18Let's keep walking around then and let's see what else we can
- 36:22see at this site.
- 36:23I'm not sure what this room here would have been,
- 36:26but that's what the doorway was for.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: This is the engine pumping house here then.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: It looks to be closed, so we can't go in.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure why it's closed, but look at the size of these pipes then.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: Absolutely enormous.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Wow, look at the wind.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Gosh, it's a strong wind today.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Wow, what's this?
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: Broken up whatever this sign was.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: Now we can't get in here because it's all fenced off,
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: but I can still pretty much give you a good view here.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 37:10SPEAKER_00: That was the pumps or the pistons just above here.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Look at the size of these things.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: These would have created the energy here for the pumping via the steam.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: And just looking at the size of these beams here,
- 37:29Absolutely rotten now,
- 37:31completely rotted away,
- 37:34just left out in the elements here.
- 37:36So give it a few years and there'll be nothing left of these at
- 37:39all,
- 37:41unfortunately.
- 37:42SPEAKER_00: Huge, huge pipes here, enormous pipes.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Looks more like a bunker than it does for mining.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: See what's inside here then.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: Not much.
- 38:02It did say online that this was open today,
- 38:06but it doesn't look like it is.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure why it's closed,
- 38:11but that's a shame because I would have liked to show you
- 38:13inside this museum here.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: They don't want you going in here, that's for sure.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Gosh, how many padlocks and chains on this?
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: So what's this then?
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: That looks like a fan.
- 38:31SPEAKER_00: Maybe an extractor.
- 38:33SPEAKER_00: I think it's probably an extractor fan.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, something like that.
- 38:39And again,
- 38:39if we look at the chimney,
- 38:40you see that that's modern brick up there.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: And when I say modern, I don't mean, you know, five, ten years.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: I mean a long time ago.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: But you can see lower down,
- 38:50look at the size of those stones that they would have had to
- 38:53get up there to build
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: that.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: Those stones are big.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: They are very heavy indeed.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, so that was funny then.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: It is actually open behind stone.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Although it's not open.
- 39:06So they said it's closed today and I couldn't go in the
- 39:08building because of high winds and rain.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: I don't get that at all.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: That makes absolutely no sense.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: But it is a National Trust site.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: So there we go.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: If you know, you know what I'm talking about.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: But at least we can walk around and see the grounds a little bit here.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there we go.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: There's one of those pistons there.
- 39:32absolutely huge all right thanks so much for watching today and
- 39:37remember this is
- 39:38the first of the city tours this season so please remember to
- 39:42subscribe to the
- 39:43channel and share these videos with a friend or family member
