Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here. I'm thirteen
- 0:04Speaker 1: under the Zone. My name is Craig Wait. Thanks very
- 0:06Speaker 1: much for joining. It's glad to have you with us.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Also happy that us includes the producer of this program,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Cameron D.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, as
- 0:16Speaker 1: in his favorite NFL.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Team that's still.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Is without a head coach, the only team with an
- 0:22Speaker 1: NFL head coaching vacancy.
- 0:24Speaker 3: What are they going to do? Good afternoon.
- 0:26Speaker 4: By the way, good afternoon, are you just trying to
- 0:28Speaker 4: ruin my days by opening up the show always Dallas
- 0:32Speaker 4: cowboy conversation.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'm just too bit because that's your middle name and
- 0:35Speaker 1: you were named obviously that's not a joke. To let
- 0:38Speaker 1: people know that is not a joke, Cameron. The way
- 0:43Speaker 1: that Cameron explained it to me, his mom and dad
- 0:46Speaker 1: decided on Dallas as the middle name because your dad
- 0:48Speaker 1: really kind of favored it as your first name.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 0:52Speaker 4: I never should tell you that. I should have just
- 0:54Speaker 4: want it to be named after Jr. From the TV show,
- 0:56Speaker 4: or I would have had a lot of fun with
- 0:57Speaker 4: that too. But you know he wanted you to be
- 1:01Speaker 4: Dallas Parker. I think so, and your mom and I
- 1:04Speaker 4: got a chance to meet Cam's mom last Saturday.
- 1:07Speaker 3: What a wonderful.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Lady she was at the She was at the basketball
- 1:12Speaker 1: game Saturday in Gainsville, Florida. She lives in Jacksonville. And
- 1:15Speaker 1: then what she took you off for a fine dinner?
- 1:17Speaker 1: Didn't she get to the game downtown Gainesville?
- 1:20Speaker 3: That's pretty good? They had a downtown Gainesville, Florida. If
- 1:22Speaker 3: I was just a swamp.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So they but they compromised, right, because your dad wanted
- 1:29Speaker 1: to name your Dallas, your mom did not. They compromised
- 1:32Speaker 1: and made that your middle name. Okay, so I'm not
- 1:36Speaker 1: making any of that up. And the reason they went
- 1:39Speaker 1: with Dallas was because your dad, at least at the
- 1:42Speaker 1: time for quite a while afterwards, was as big a
- 1:45Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys fan as you were, at least for a
- 1:47Speaker 1: time such as it was. But their missteps and misdeeds
- 1:51Speaker 1: and unfortunate endings to their seasons of the past few
- 1:55Speaker 1: years have really derailed the both of you when it
- 1:58Speaker 1: comes nowt Your dad isn't as drastic about it as
- 2:01Speaker 1: you are, right, I mean, he's still he'll watch the Cowboys.
- 2:05Speaker 4: He's you told me he watches him for a laugh. Yeah,
- 2:09Speaker 4: I think he's checked out too, really, Like I bet
- 2:12Speaker 4: you if you asked him, like he may have known
- 2:14Speaker 4: the microccarthy's been fired. I'm not sure if he knows
- 2:16Speaker 4: that yet. Oh stop, I'm serious, he's I think he.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Also checked out as well. He's mostly just in the
- 2:24Speaker 3: ut right now.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Okay, okay, all right. So anyway, that's that's why I
- 2:29Speaker 1: bring it up. But also it is a salient point.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It is a valid worthy topic that the Cowboys still
- 2:45Speaker 1: do not have a head coach.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So I understand, I understand.
- 2:53Speaker 1: That you are kind of out on him right now,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but I would imagine that you are at the very
- 3:01Speaker 1: least interested in what's going on with him and trying
- 3:06Speaker 1: to get a head coach.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Right Ah, they're about to hire Ryan Schottenheimer, who, by
- 3:12Speaker 4: the way, I used to wash his dad's car at
- 3:14Speaker 4: Carolina Springs Auto Spaw in Cordelator.
- 3:16Speaker 3: North Carolina. Whe he got fired by the Buffalo Bills.
- 3:18Speaker 3: You washed Marty shot in the Heimer's.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Carty would come in after he got let go by
- 3:23Speaker 4: the Bills, and he lived in the Peninsula Club in Cornelia's,
- 3:27Speaker 4: North Carolina Lake Norman and I would see him and
- 3:30Speaker 4: you would usually be grumbling, still pissed off about how
- 3:32Speaker 4: his tenure and in Buffalo, yeah, his son's maybe the
- 3:37Speaker 4: Dallas Cowboys head coach. Let me ask you this, Craig,
- 3:40Speaker 4: If looking at all the NFL teams and from a
- 3:44Speaker 4: fan base point of view, who are the worst teams
- 3:47Speaker 4: to be a fan of for the next five years?
- 3:49Speaker 3: The next five year outlook? Who would be the worst
- 3:51Speaker 3: teams to root for?
- 3:52Speaker 4: I think if the Cowboys do hire shot In Himer,
- 3:54Speaker 4: and either they hire Kellen Moore or Joe Brady, I
- 3:58Speaker 4: think the Cowboys are in the top five that list.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I think you go with what Jacksonville because I don't
- 4:03Speaker 4: think Jacksonville's gonna make a good head coaching move. Probably Cleveland,
- 4:06Speaker 4: just because Cleveland just cannot seem to get over the
- 4:09Speaker 4: hump and Deshaun Watson contract is so bad. But I
- 4:12Speaker 4: think the Cowboys are the top five. I would argue
- 4:14Speaker 4: there right now. If you're a Dallas Cowboy fan, the
- 4:16Speaker 4: next five years look bleak.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Would you have any interest in the Cowboys hiring Doug Peterson?
- 4:21Speaker 3: Oh my god, that'd be even worse. He won a
- 4:23Speaker 3: Super Bowl. Well, so did Mike McCarthy.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yeah, he won a Super Bowl because Bill Belichick what
- 4:28Speaker 4: suspended his best cornerback before the game and they could
- 4:32Speaker 4: just could not stop Nick Foles.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Man.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, I think I.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Cowboys are better off with Mike McCarthy as their head
- 4:39Speaker 4: coach for Schottenheimer or Kellen Moore or Doug Peterson or
- 4:44Speaker 4: Rex Ryan or whoever. Okay, they had a five hour
- 4:48Speaker 4: meeting yesterday. What happens in a five hour meeting with
- 4:52Speaker 4: Jerry Jones.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Well, you'd probably go to lunch at some point. I
- 4:56Speaker 1: think he'd probably do that.
- 4:57Speaker 4: I mean, remember McCarthy slept on Jerry's couch when he
- 5:00Speaker 4: got hired.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Oh, I forgot about that. Yeah. And he also said
- 5:05Speaker 3: he'd been watching film for years.
- 5:07Speaker 4: Yeah, he had been studying and at the offenses. Yeah,
- 5:09Speaker 4: he wasn't the offensive coordinator until I wasn't calling the
- 5:12Speaker 4: plays until I think maybe this year. I don't, I
- 5:16Speaker 4: don't know, but yeah, I touxted my Carolina Panther fans.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I said, are my friends like congratulations? I think Panthers
- 5:23Speaker 4: are in a much better spot than the Cowboys are
- 5:24Speaker 4: the next five years. Really, I think so. I think
- 5:27Speaker 4: Canals is a good head coach. Bryce Shung appears to
- 5:31Speaker 4: be their their cornerback, quarterback for the future. I'm not
- 5:34Speaker 4: sure where.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You stand on Dak Prescott. I've heard mixed things from.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Me on it.
- 5:39Speaker 4: I think he's in the same conversation as like Jared Goff.
- 5:44Speaker 4: He's not going to win you Super Bowl, but he
- 5:45Speaker 4: can definitely cost you one. You just need him to
- 5:47Speaker 4: be able to manage the game. But you need him
- 5:49Speaker 4: in a good offense with a good offensive line and
- 5:51Speaker 4: good weapons. And you know, outside of ceed Land, the
- 5:54Speaker 4: Cowboys just don't have the weapons. The over line got
- 5:56Speaker 4: better this year, but it's still a major question mark,
- 5:59Speaker 4: and you know his his the defenses have gotten worse
- 6:02Speaker 4: every single year or so.
- 6:06Speaker 1: All Right, So I'm gonna ask this question again, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: I want you to give me as realistic an answer
- 6:12Speaker 1: as you can give. Not who you think the Cowboys
- 6:16Speaker 1: will hire as their new head coach, because nobody knows
- 6:18Speaker 1: what Jerry's thinking, nobody really and truly. So I'm not
- 6:21Speaker 1: asking that. I'm asking you of the available candidates out there,
- 6:27Speaker 1: both interviewed and not and not interviewed at least not
- 6:31Speaker 1: yet anyway, who would you want as a as a
- 6:36Speaker 1: disenfranchised Cowboys fan, who would you want them to hire.
- 6:40Speaker 1: That's tough because all the ones I would have liked
- 6:43Speaker 1: him to hire have already been the higher down, right,
- 6:44Speaker 1: have been hired.
- 6:45Speaker 5: So h.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Man, that's it's tough.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Maybe someone like Pete Carroll, just the CEO type, but
- 6:54Speaker 4: he's also.
- 6:54Speaker 3: What eighty years old? Yeah, yeah, so you're.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Looking at a couple of years hold over until you
- 7:01Speaker 4: know he decides to retire, just gets too old. The
- 7:04Speaker 4: coach at seventy three. So seventy three.
- 7:07Speaker 1: So you you and you and Jerry have something in common.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You're both have an interest in retread NFL coaches. Yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: but that's why I asked Doug Peterson.
- 7:18Speaker 4: But he's an awful coach. I don't think he was
- 7:20Speaker 4: a good head coach in Philadelphia. I know he won
- 7:21Speaker 4: Super Bowl, but I think he kind of just stumbled
- 7:23Speaker 4: into that. I mean they fired him what year after Yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 4: after that. I mean, you don't fire a head coach
- 7:29Speaker 4: unless there's something, unless he truly sucks.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Right yeah, okay, all right, So okay, so Pete Carroll
- 7:37Speaker 1: would be your call. I would try and go after
- 7:40Speaker 1: a coach who's probably already has a job, like I like,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I like Todd Bowles, Liam Cohens getting some getting some looks.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Just you know, he's only had one year as the
- 7:49Speaker 1: OCA in Tampa Bay. But I like something like that.
- 7:53Speaker 4: You know, I don't think Tomlin's ever going to leave Pittsburgh, right,
- 7:57Speaker 4: That's the only thing.
- 7:57Speaker 1: And I don't think he'd ever worked for Jerry. I
- 8:00Speaker 1: can't see that happening off of that. Okay, Well, anyway,
- 8:03Speaker 1: I was just kind of curious about that because I'd
- 8:05Speaker 1: given it some thought and just kind of wondered, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 1: where you stood as a like I said, disenfranchised Cowboys fan.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I would love if you know, maybe La or San
- 8:17Speaker 4: Frank got a little bit tired, and I was like,
- 8:18Speaker 4: you know what, Kyle, Sean's not working out. But then
- 8:21Speaker 4: I don't trust Jerry to make.
- 8:27Speaker 3: The move to do that.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Shanahan would be a more likely can A thing than mcvayh.
- 8:31Speaker 1: He's a California guy now and all that. But I
- 8:32Speaker 1: will tell you who probably who stars on the Rise,
- 8:35Speaker 1: and I'm glad his name hasn't been mentioned that much.
- 8:37Speaker 1: That's Chris Shula, the defensive coordinator for the Rams.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Young coach Grandson. They talked about coaching pedigree.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Grandson of the all time winning as coach in NFL history, Nonchula.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think Jerry probably would try to hire Don before
- 8:53Speaker 1: Chris at this point. See, I like going after the
- 8:58Speaker 1: young and upcoming coordinators. You know, maybe it works out,
- 9:01Speaker 1: maybe it doesn't. It's hard to hard to really, you
- 9:04Speaker 1: know know, but I think going after an older coach,
- 9:07Speaker 1: like I say, Pete Carroll, but you know, that probably
- 9:10Speaker 1: wouldn't work out. But I don't know what other choices like.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I do not want to hire Kellen Moore. I do
- 9:14Speaker 1: not think the Eagles offense is good. I think the
- 9:16Speaker 1: Eagles offense is just Saquon Barkley at this point. Okay,
- 9:19Speaker 1: so you're okay with it being a coordinator, young coordinator,
- 9:23Speaker 1: but it's just got to be the young coordinator that
- 9:25Speaker 1: you want, not not just most any young coordinator.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Yeah, just because you're you know, you're young and innovative
- 9:33Speaker 4: doesn't mean you're you're a good coach, right.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Or that you're head coaching material. And that I think
- 9:38Speaker 1: is the mistake that gets made.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Sure, you know.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That was what was said about Chris Shula's dad, David Schuler.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Remember he was coach of the Bengals and they just
- 9:52Speaker 1: said he was a good coordinator, but he won the
- 9:53Speaker 1: head coach. There are people who feel that way about
- 9:56Speaker 1: Todd Bowles, that you know, he's when he was at
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Jets, but the Jets were just so dispunct Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: such a beast. He's done a far better job at
- 10:05Speaker 1: Tampa Bay, yet they can't get over the hump. They're
- 10:08Speaker 1: in the playoffs there with him. But they're those who
- 10:13Speaker 1: share that opinion that he's a great coordinator that might
- 10:15Speaker 1: not be a great head coach. And that's why I
- 10:17Speaker 1: said that about David Chuler. There's been other guys, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: that was said about dan Quinn.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Now he's proving them wrong right now with what he's
- 10:27Speaker 3: doing with Washington.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I was okay with Cowboys letting McCarthy go and promoting
- 10:33Speaker 4: dan quincause at least dan Quinn's been to a Super Bowl, yep,
- 10:35Speaker 4: in the last you know, five six years. What about
- 10:39Speaker 4: what about this name Bruce arians.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Well again you're going back, Yeah, but he won our
- 10:45Speaker 1: Super Bowl this decade, right, he did, and he seems,
- 10:48Speaker 1: you know, he's kind of kind of a no nonsense
- 10:51Speaker 1: type guy.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Obviously did have a great relationship with but I think
- 10:54Speaker 4: Brady that's why he bulls took over, right.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I think that last season was yeah.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And yeah he and he and Arians did not get
- 11:01Speaker 1: along towards the end there, so yeah, I mean, he's
- 11:05Speaker 1: got a pedigree.
- 11:06Speaker 3: But he's not been an Indian name.
- 11:08Speaker 4: So it's either going to be Schottenheimer or Kellen Moore.
- 11:14Speaker 4: But at this point, unless Kellen Moore just really likes
- 11:17Speaker 4: the Dallas and the Cowboys, like, I don't know if
- 11:19Speaker 4: I would really want to take that job, but I
- 11:21Speaker 4: don't know. It's the head coaching job, is one of
- 11:22Speaker 4: the most popular teams, but it's not an attractive job.
- 11:24Speaker 3: I mean, we heard Troy Ankman talk about it. He said,
- 11:27Speaker 3: it's not an attractive job.
- 11:28Speaker 1: They have somebody said about it being attractive, and he goes,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I might have some doubt about that. Yeah, he was
- 11:33Speaker 1: his quote because of the Jerry dynamic as much as anything.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And yeah, the expectation that comes with and all this stuff.
- 11:41Speaker 1: The expectation was always there with the Cowboys. It was
- 11:43Speaker 1: there when Clint Maurkuson owned the team, but once they
- 11:46Speaker 1: got good in the mid sixties and then carried through
- 11:49Speaker 1: the seventies, and then when bum Bright owned the team
- 11:52Speaker 1: and then Jerry, and it's always been there, the expectation
- 11:56Speaker 1: of success and that sort of thing, but with Jerry,
- 11:58Speaker 1: it takes it to a completely different level because of
- 12:01Speaker 1: the dynamic and the way he runs that runs that
- 12:03Speaker 1: football team.
- 12:04Speaker 3: So anyway, all right, we've got a lot of things
- 12:06Speaker 3: to get to in the program.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I just wanted to get some NFL stuff out there
- 12:09Speaker 1: on the table.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Coming up.
- 12:13Speaker 1: We're gonna hear and we're gonna hear this. We're gonna
- 12:15Speaker 1: hear parts in all three hours of the show today
- 12:17Speaker 1: from Vick Shaffer. Texas women's head coach have a massive
- 12:20Speaker 1: game tonight. It's an SEC game, it's a conference game,
- 12:23Speaker 1: but it's against Tennessee, two longtime traditional powers in women's
- 12:28Speaker 1: college basketball. Texas is number seven, Tennessee is number seventeen.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You can hear the game on one of three point
- 12:33Speaker 1: one FM, Austin's eighties station that'll come your way six
- 12:37Speaker 1: forty five air times seven o'clock tip. The tip off
- 12:40Speaker 1: moved one hour up from when it was originally gonna
- 12:44Speaker 1: be at eight o'clock because they had to do some
- 12:47Speaker 1: shuffling with the television schedule because LSU couldn't get to
- 12:49Speaker 1: South Carolina due to the snowstorms there in Louisiana, so
- 12:53Speaker 1: that game got pushed back to tomorrow afternoon. They're playing
- 12:57Speaker 1: that game in Columbia and Texas game has moved up
- 13:01Speaker 1: one hour, so the Texas women are in action tonight
- 13:03Speaker 1: at seven o'clock against Tennessee. We're going to hear the
- 13:05Speaker 1: first part of this from Vick Schaeffer coming up here
- 13:07Speaker 1: on this Thursday afternoon on Hey, I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 13:14Speaker 6: It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 13:17Speaker 6: Texas Longhorns in Hall of Vain Broadcasting.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Craig Way, happy.
- 13:35Speaker 3: To have you with us on a Thursday afternoon.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Hey, a reminder we have long warn weekly tonight with
- 13:40Speaker 1: Rodney Terry coming away from Pluckers the West Campus location
- 13:43Speaker 1: here in Austin six o'clock. RT will be with us
- 13:46Speaker 1: and hope you can come on. I always have a
- 13:48Speaker 1: good conversation with the Longhorns head coach. You can enjoy
- 13:50Speaker 1: some great wings so you can submit questions for Rodney
- 13:54Speaker 1: to ask. Will beat a member of the corral? If
- 13:58Speaker 1: the corral existed when you were a student, would you
- 14:00Speaker 1: have been in the corral?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Probably not, because I was always either in the press
- 14:04Speaker 4: area or running around for LHN. You know, I never
- 14:10Speaker 4: I don't think I ever attended Texas basketball game as
- 14:15Speaker 4: just a student.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I think I was always working, though. I think you
- 14:19Speaker 1: have kind of gone the same route I have. When
- 14:21Speaker 1: I was in college at North.
- 14:22Speaker 4: Texas now football, every football game, I wasn't working. I
- 14:25Speaker 4: was in the student section.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was at North Texas, I started doing
- 14:30Speaker 1: those kinds of things, working on the things. So I
- 14:33Speaker 1: wouldn't say I deprived myself of an opportunity to enjoy
- 14:37Speaker 1: it as a student. But it's a different path. You
- 14:40Speaker 1: choose the route you want to go with that. It
- 14:43Speaker 1: worked out okay for me. Yeah, it's it's kind of
- 14:46Speaker 1: you know, it's a trade off, right, Yeah, I'm still
- 14:49Speaker 1: involved with the game. You see the game and all
- 14:51Speaker 1: that kind of Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I love being able to watch basketball games as a fan. Now,
- 14:54Speaker 4: of course I can't do it in the student section
- 14:57Speaker 4: or from a seat, but I get to do it
- 14:59Speaker 4: from part side.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Heats it on. I just got to be able to
- 15:02Speaker 3: make sure I do my job and then to the games.
- 15:04Speaker 1: But when you were a student, you wouldn't have gotten
- 15:05Speaker 1: down there with like Bevo hat guy, T shirt girl,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and all the other ones down there in the deal
- 15:10Speaker 1: and yelling and hurling team.
- 15:15Speaker 4: So you know, I was at I was a student
- 15:18Speaker 4: for the last the last two of the last three
- 15:24Speaker 4: years of shotcas tenure. We weren't very good. Texas was
- 15:26Speaker 4: not very good during those those two years. So now
- 15:32Speaker 4: the teams under Beard or our team, you know, maybe
- 15:35Speaker 4: I would have pushed more. Okay, maybe I would have
- 15:37Speaker 4: pushed more women's games possibly, you know. Now, I went
- 15:41Speaker 4: the baseball games at the student too. I just I
- 15:43Speaker 4: think it was because of what my my roles were
- 15:45Speaker 4: a student media sure and my internship at ESPN that
- 15:49Speaker 4: I was we always had basketball.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Games to work.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yep.
- 15:51Speaker 3: It's a good point, all right.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Speaking of basketball, the Texas women, as we mentioned, rank
- 15:57Speaker 1: seven of the country, coming off that very impress a
- 16:00Speaker 1: blowout win of thirty eight points, a thirty eight point
- 16:04Speaker 1: march over number eight Maryland on Monday evening in Newark.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Now return to conference play. They take on Tennessee the
- 16:11Speaker 1: Lady Valls, who are seventeenth in the country. But they
- 16:14Speaker 1: have been really, really good, as you'll hear from the
- 16:19Speaker 1: head coach. So here are from his media availability some
- 16:23Speaker 1: comments and thoughts and statements and some questions for long words.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Head coach Vic Shaffer, Good afternoon, everybody, appreciate y'all being
- 16:31Speaker 2: on today, beautiful day here in Austin, Texas, a lot
- 16:38Speaker 2: better than it was yesterday. Obviously, got to get ready
- 16:42Speaker 2: to play. Obviously a tremendous team in Tennessee team that's
- 16:47Speaker 2: lost three games by a total of four points. Their
- 16:51Speaker 2: average in eighty five and a half points a game.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Just a tremendous offensive team. Play extremely hard defensively, gonna
- 17:03Speaker 2: press like we do, pick up full court, and really
- 17:07Speaker 2: challenge you every possession. It's a heck of a team.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Coach has done a great job with them, and they
- 17:17Speaker 2: are really playing at an extremely high level. We've got
- 17:23Speaker 2: our work cut out for us, no question about it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: I mean, I can't remember the last time I've gotten
- 17:29Speaker 2: ready for a conference opponent who in conference only is
- 17:36Speaker 2: averaging almost eighty six points a game. I mean, that
- 17:39Speaker 2: is a prolific offensive team. They're going to play, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 2: ten to eleven kids. They're going to challenge you substitution
- 17:49Speaker 2: wise with multiple and mass substitutions. And again, they're extremely talented.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Just really remind me of some of the old Tennessee
- 18:01Speaker 2: teams of years gone by that are just all tra athletic,
- 18:05Speaker 2: play their guts out, rebound it defend. So uh again,
- 18:13Speaker 2: well we'll have our work cut out for us. Obviously,
- 18:16Speaker 2: the game time has been changed to seven uh, and
- 18:19Speaker 2: it's gonna be on ESPN, and we're gonna honor Shay
- 18:24Speaker 2: Holly is the all time winning his player in Texas
- 18:29Speaker 2: basketball history, which will be special. And again it's I
- 18:34Speaker 2: think it's our our we backpack game as well, which
- 18:39Speaker 2: again we're awfully proud to be a part of. So,
- 18:43Speaker 2: you know, short turnaround for us, having played Monday, got
- 18:46Speaker 2: home Monday night at twelve thirty one o'clock in the morning,
- 18:53Speaker 2: got back after it yesterday afternoon, didn't do a whole
- 18:55Speaker 2: lot just because I couldn't with them. But then we'll
- 18:58Speaker 2: have a good day of prepay and we've got to
- 19:01Speaker 2: get ready to play, you know, top fifteen team. So
- 19:06Speaker 2: they're really good and we're gonna have to play really well.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Thanks coach, Let's start with Mark and then Kirk Mark
- 19:14Speaker 2: go ahead, Yeah, how do.
- 19:17Speaker 8: You cover all that space defensively when you have a
- 19:20Speaker 8: team who that shoots more threes and makes more threes
- 19:24Speaker 8: than anyone, but also leads the nation. I believe in
- 19:27Speaker 8: offensive rebounding, which seems to put a lot of pressure
- 19:30Speaker 8: on a defense.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Yeah, like I said, Mark, they're really talented. They make
- 19:35Speaker 2: ten threes a game. They made thirty three threes in
- 19:38Speaker 2: a game earlier this year, y'all. I don't know what
- 19:41Speaker 2: else to tell you. They are prolific scoreres offensively, They're
- 19:47Speaker 2: really really talented. We're going to have to really, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: have great focus each and every possession tomorrow night, not
- 19:59Speaker 2: only and handling their pressure in the press, but then
- 20:05Speaker 2: execute an offense because we're gonna have to try to
- 20:07Speaker 2: keep up a little bit on offense. I don't think
- 20:10Speaker 2: we're gonna go out and shut them down, hold them
- 20:13Speaker 2: to fifty points. They're just they're just too good, you know.
- 20:19Speaker 2: But we've done a good job all year for the
- 20:22Speaker 2: most part of taking away the three point line with
- 20:27Speaker 2: certain opponents, and you know this team will be no different.
- 20:30Speaker 2: We're gonna have to really be good out there. But
- 20:33Speaker 2: then you got to you got to also guard against
- 20:36Speaker 2: the rest of it. And and so it's gonna challenge
- 20:40Speaker 2: us and we're gonna have to be really good, really
- 20:43Speaker 2: solid take advantage when we do get an advantage to
- 20:47Speaker 2: go make a layup against the press, got to go
- 20:49Speaker 2: make your layup. You can't go down there and brick
- 20:52Speaker 2: it or you know, miss it. When you get a
- 20:55Speaker 2: chance for a two on one, you got to go
- 20:57Speaker 2: lay it in. So we've got to be really good.
- 21:01Speaker 2: We can't turn the ball over. You know, they they've
- 21:05Speaker 2: had games where they've gotten thirty points off turnovers. You
- 21:08Speaker 2: know they're forcing you know their opponents, and you know,
- 21:13Speaker 2: twenty point seven turnovers a game in conference in conference,
- 21:17Speaker 2: like that's really good. So we're gonna have to take
- 21:22Speaker 2: care of the ball. And it's not just a one
- 21:24Speaker 2: person deal on that. You know. I know Rory and
- 21:27Speaker 2: Brie will be challenged at point, but you know in
- 21:31Speaker 2: my offense, everybody touches it. You're gonna have to make
- 21:33Speaker 2: good decisions, hurt good.
- 21:38Speaker 9: Yeah, Vica, I'd just like to ask you about your
- 21:41Speaker 9: two stars and Maddie and Rory and how good was
- 21:45Speaker 9: it to see her break out like that? And Rory
- 21:49Speaker 9: is I don't know, is there a better player gonna
- 21:51Speaker 9: have more impact on a game without scoring than Rory?
- 21:55Speaker 2: Well, I just told her the other night. You know,
- 21:57Speaker 2: she's all worked up about going one for seven and
- 22:01Speaker 2: I'm like, Rory, you had seven assists. You're picking up
- 22:05Speaker 2: full court ninety four feet like there's not another garden
- 22:08Speaker 2: the country. I say this all the time. That does
- 22:12Speaker 2: what Rory Harmon does. And we score eighty nine points
- 22:16Speaker 2: and she made one shot. That's how good offensively we
- 22:20Speaker 2: can be. And she's you know, she's the quarterback, she's
- 22:24Speaker 2: the one running the show on that deal. When you
- 22:27Speaker 2: have a Madison Booker who sees the floor and is
- 22:32Speaker 2: a point forward, it just adds a dimension to your team.
- 22:37Speaker 2: What those two create for each other is really special.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And again it's what allows our team to be so good.
- 22:46Speaker 2: And when you've got a two headed monster like we've
- 22:49Speaker 2: got in Taylor and Oldacre, who are shooting it in
- 22:54Speaker 2: a very high level in the sixties, averaging double doubles,
- 23:01Speaker 2: you know, we really have a team that's hard to
- 23:05Speaker 2: deal with. So it was great to see Booker get
- 23:08Speaker 2: on track the other night. She's been really playing well. Again.
- 23:13Speaker 2: I think both those kids deserve some grace because you know,
- 23:20Speaker 2: we're in a different league going against different types and
- 23:24Speaker 2: kinds of players now, different strategies, great coaches. Not that
- 23:29Speaker 2: the league I was in what didn't have great coaches.
- 23:31Speaker 2: But the athlete, the athleticism, the quickness, the size that
- 23:37Speaker 2: our team is dealing with right now is a little
- 23:39Speaker 2: bit different than the Big twelve and Bookers at the
- 23:43Speaker 2: top of everybody's scouting report. She's a nineteen year old
- 23:47Speaker 2: kid man. She's fine and she's doing a great job.
- 23:53Speaker 2: She's so unselfish. That's what makes the kids so special.
- 23:57Speaker 2: And again being a point forward, she had three us
- 24:00Speaker 2: no turnovers the other night. She enjoys the assist as
- 24:05Speaker 2: much as the bucket. But again she's not deterred. She
- 24:13Speaker 2: just works hard. She just stays in the gym. Hearn
- 24:15Speaker 2: Blair shoot every day. They stay after it. You know,
- 24:20Speaker 2: Rory Harmon in the gym every day, she stays after it.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Those two are pros. You know that when you look
- 24:28Speaker 2: at at them and their work ethic, that's what a
- 24:31Speaker 2: pro looks like. Their approach to the game, That's what
- 24:35Speaker 2: it looks like as a pro. And it's also what
- 24:38Speaker 2: it looks like in the professional workplace too, to have
- 24:41Speaker 2: that attitude. And so I think when you when you
- 24:45Speaker 2: have that shase, such an unselfish guard out there as
- 24:49Speaker 2: the third guard, and that you know, that threesome and
- 24:53Speaker 2: she just play. Let's plays off those two. If you're
- 24:56Speaker 2: gonna go guard those two and you ain't gonna guard her, well,
- 24:58Speaker 2: then she'll go to for from three. You know, she'll
- 25:01Speaker 2: drive it and lay it in. She'll get out on
- 25:03Speaker 2: the break and get you four points on fast breaks
- 25:07Speaker 2: and then amo again if she's feeling good and comfortable.
- 25:11Speaker 2: And you know, she's a pretty effective four player. And
- 25:17Speaker 2: so we've got some really you know, we've got a
- 25:20Speaker 2: good team. And I think that's what makes us special
- 25:24Speaker 2: and has the chance to be really good, is that
- 25:26Speaker 2: you can't just focus on one player because the rest
- 25:31Speaker 2: of our team can pick up the slack.
- 25:34Speaker 1: That's Longhorn's head coach Vick Shaffer talking about this big
- 25:37Speaker 1: match up with Tennessee, and he was talking in specifics
- 25:40Speaker 1: about Madison Booker and Rory Harmon and other players. We'll
- 25:42Speaker 1: hear more from him next hour and in the four
- 25:44Speaker 1: o'clock hour as he starts to get into the breakdown
- 25:46Speaker 1: of the matchup with Tennessee. That was from his media
- 25:48Speaker 1: availability from yesterday in the game the games at seven
- 25:51Speaker 1: o'clock to night up next inconceivable when we continue here
- 25:55Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. Craig Waight, Cameron Parker, the
- 25:57Speaker 1: producer alongside Glad to have you with us as well.

- 26:56Speaker 1: that and you can leave us up to a thirty
- 27:00Speaker 1: second message, so it could be your question, comment you're
- 27:03Speaker 1: thought any of that. That's the talk back feature, So
- 27:05Speaker 1: a couple of ways to access us if you'd like
- 27:07Speaker 1: to do that. We heard some from Vick Shae from
- 27:11Speaker 1: the first hour of the program. We'll hear some more
- 27:13Speaker 1: from him coming up in a few minutes on the
- 27:15Speaker 1: tax line. You know, it was an hour ago, Cameron,
- 27:19Speaker 1: when we were talking about the Dallas Cowboys coaching vacancy,
- 27:23Speaker 1: and I asked you the very difficult question about who
- 27:27Speaker 1: you would want to see somebody ask any easier question.
- 27:29Speaker 1: They say, who don't you want?
- 27:32Speaker 3: Who? Don't think that's fair? I know, I just I
- 27:35Speaker 3: sound like I'm just complaining all the time.
- 27:37Speaker 4: Who I want has been hired Sean Payton, Mike Frabel,
- 27:39Speaker 4: Bill Belichick, three actual good coaches that Jerry Jones continues
- 27:43Speaker 4: to just sit on his hands and not do anything about.
- 27:45Speaker 3: You would have been okay with Ben Johnson.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Ben Johnson, Aaron Glenn uh, Robert Slow, wouldn't have been
- 27:51Speaker 4: as bad as Brian Schottenheimer. Okay, it looks like slas
- 27:54Speaker 4: going to the Jaguars. And also I don't think Jerry
- 27:57Speaker 4: Jones even knows who Robert Salad is, so mm And
- 28:02Speaker 4: also I think a lot of this frustration I just
- 28:04Speaker 4: don't don't think it also matters too much with the
- 28:05Speaker 4: head coaches, because as long as the Jones family are
- 28:08Speaker 4: making the personnel decisions, then I don't think.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Anything the head coach is nearly a puppet.
- 28:13Speaker 4: You're saying, yeah, and that's that's and that's why the
- 28:17Speaker 4: last couple of head coaches have been yes man McCarthy,
- 28:21Speaker 4: Jason Garrett. I mean, if Brian Schottenheimer was a free
- 28:24Speaker 4: agent right now, would he be up for head coaching jobs?
- 28:28Speaker 2: No?
- 28:30Speaker 3: No, Jason. What happened?
- 28:30Speaker 4: Jason Garrey went to the Giants for some reason, and
- 28:33Speaker 4: I don't understand any of them. I mean, the Giants
- 28:34Speaker 4: hired what Joe Judge was a special teams coach, right,
- 28:38Speaker 4: and then he got the head coaching job, So I'm
- 28:40Speaker 4: not going to trust his judgment too much. And the
- 28:42Speaker 4: way that John Marr is involved in an organization, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 4: it may have been one of those things where he
- 28:47Speaker 4: just liked Jason Garrett.
- 28:48Speaker 3: So come down to yes man.
- 28:50Speaker 4: I mean, as you know, Craig, you know Jerry's you know,
- 28:53Speaker 4: feuded with a lot of you know Jimmy Johnson.
- 28:55Speaker 3: Okay, how that ended. So it's true. It's true.
- 28:59Speaker 1: And even the coaches that he quote unquote had good
- 29:01Speaker 1: relationships with following his time with Jimmy, when he had
- 29:05Speaker 1: Barry Switzer especially, he and Barry got along well. But
- 29:08Speaker 1: the problem with Switzer is almost none of the media
- 29:13Speaker 1: liked him, and a lot of the fans didn't like him.
- 29:16Speaker 1: And they figured the one Super Bowl that they won,
- 29:18Speaker 1: Super Bowl thirty, obviously was with all of the stockpile
- 29:22Speaker 1: talent that Jimmy as basically acting as the personnel and
- 29:26Speaker 1: GM guy accumulated through the trades like the herschel Walker trade,
- 29:30Speaker 1: a couple of the other trades that he put that together.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And when Jerry said at the owners meetings there in
- 29:40Speaker 1: the spring of ninety four, after the Cowboys went back
- 29:43Speaker 1: to back Super Bowls, that he could hire any one
- 29:46Speaker 1: of five hundred coaches that could coach the team, and
- 29:49Speaker 1: that was the beginning of the end with Jimmy. He
- 29:54Speaker 1: proceeded to prove it that he could put somebody in
- 29:56Speaker 1: there like Barry Switzer to as long as all the
- 29:58Speaker 1: talent was there, and when a super and they did.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Now they did lose to San Francisco the year before
- 30:03Speaker 1: in the NFC Championship, and then the forty nine Ers
- 30:06Speaker 1: went on and won the Super Bowl to beat the Chargers,
- 30:08Speaker 1: and then they won it over the Steelers in Super
- 30:12Speaker 1: Bowl thirty, and then they got beats by I believe
- 30:15Speaker 1: it was Carolina in the playoffs, and then I think
- 30:18Speaker 1: the Cardinals in the playoffs, and that was pretty much
- 30:20Speaker 1: the beginning of the end. And every coach after that
- 30:24Speaker 1: that they've had, from Chan Gaily to Dave Campo, you know,
- 30:31Speaker 1: in the Jason to Wade Phillips, and then in the
- 30:34Speaker 1: Jason Garrett and then into Mike McCarthy has been guys
- 30:38Speaker 1: who are towing the company line. Well, the problem with
- 30:43Speaker 1: the company line is is if the personnel isn't of
- 30:48Speaker 1: championship caliber or if it's close to, but you really
- 30:53Speaker 1: need good coaching to get it over the top. That
- 30:57Speaker 1: had happened, and so that's that's why Cowboy fans are disaffected.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Disenfranchised fans like yourself are just you know, you're kind
- 31:10Speaker 1: of fed up with it and you're kind of used
- 31:11Speaker 1: to it, and seeing the route that it's gone, it's
- 31:13Speaker 1: very frustrating. I understand that the Rams went through decades
- 31:16Speaker 1: of that as well, when Georgia Frontier was the owner
- 31:19Speaker 1: and then there's another ownership group.
- 31:21Speaker 3: It was bad.
- 31:22Speaker 1: The Dodgers went through that. That Frank McCourt ownership was
- 31:27Speaker 1: a disaster where he was using team profits to pay
- 31:31Speaker 1: off his very costly divorce and stuff like that. I mean,
- 31:34Speaker 1: a bad owner can wreck, absolutely wreck a franchise. In
- 31:39Speaker 1: the case of the Cowboys, it's different though. Why you know,
- 31:45Speaker 1: while Jerry Jones and his family are to blame and
- 31:49Speaker 1: they are the sole perpetrators of the blame for what
- 31:52Speaker 1: has happened to that franchise, they are enabled to do
- 31:56Speaker 1: so by the fans who continue to buy the twenty
- 32:00Speaker 1: nine dollars party passes and to sell out the season
- 32:03Speaker 1: tickets and those and I also get it as well,
- 32:06Speaker 1: and this has been pointed out by a lot of
- 32:08Speaker 1: various two people that this cycle may never end, if
- 32:13Speaker 1: only because the companies and corporations who buy suites and
- 32:19Speaker 1: pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in it use it
- 32:23Speaker 1: as tax write offs and cost of doing business. So
- 32:27Speaker 1: Jerry is still going to make the money, and as
- 32:29Speaker 1: long as he's bringing into the money, he's going to
- 32:32Speaker 1: do it. How he wants to do it. The only
- 32:34Speaker 1: way to get him to change would be for him
- 32:36Speaker 1: to be hit in the wallet.
- 32:38Speaker 3: And that's not going to happen.
- 32:39Speaker 1: Fans are going to keep buying tickets, and if nothing else,
- 32:42Speaker 1: fans of opposing teams will continue to buy tickets and
- 32:46Speaker 1: come in. You know, when we play the Lions and
- 32:49Speaker 1: tell Lions fans are packing him in. When the Packers
- 32:52Speaker 1: play in there, Packer fans pack the place. So as
- 32:56Speaker 1: long as that's happening, he's still getting what he wants.
- 33:00Speaker 1: He's still getting the profits, and as such, he's happy
- 33:05Speaker 1: with what he has his coach until it's time to
- 33:07Speaker 1: make a change.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Now. You made a good.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Point, and I read about it as well, how they
- 33:10Speaker 1: were apparently perfectly happy to have Mike McCarthy continue as
- 33:15Speaker 1: head coach. It was McCarthy who wanted a longer term
- 33:18Speaker 1: commitment and Jerry was like, Eh, let's go one year
- 33:21Speaker 1: at a time. Let's see this is MacCarthy's Likeking, I
- 33:22Speaker 1: don't want that, and so he's out now. He may
- 33:25Speaker 1: have cut off his nose to spite his face, because
- 33:27Speaker 1: I don't see him winding up anywhere with a coaching
- 33:29Speaker 1: job right now.
- 33:31Speaker 3: But he didn't want that. He wanted a longer term
- 33:34Speaker 3: deal then Jerry and the organization was willing to give him.
- 33:39Speaker 3: So they continue to just spin it in circles and
- 33:45Speaker 3: chase their tail.
- 33:46Speaker 1: But that's where the Cowboys are, and I think that's
- 33:51Speaker 1: what's driving you nuts and a lot of other fans
- 33:54Speaker 1: who are very, very loyal for a long time, is
- 33:56Speaker 1: that there is no end in sight of when this
- 34:00Speaker 1: And that's the frustration I read from Cowboy fans on
- 34:03Speaker 1: social media and here and things like that, is that
- 34:05Speaker 1: there's no end in sight, no relief inside of any
- 34:10Speaker 1: of this.
- 34:11Speaker 3: And there's no real plan this right.
- 34:13Speaker 4: I mean, it kind of seems like Jerry Jones wanted
- 34:16Speaker 4: to keep Mike McCarthy but didn't want to pay him
- 34:18Speaker 4: a lot of money because Jerry.
- 34:20Speaker 3: Didn't want to commit to a long term.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Notorious for not you know, he balked at what Wade
- 34:24Speaker 4: Phillips getting three million a year? Andy Reid makes how
- 34:28Speaker 4: much a year? Twenty million the year, So that's one
- 34:32Speaker 4: part of it. McCarthy realizes, you know what, screw this,
- 34:35Speaker 4: I'm out. I'd rather either go coach somewhere else or
- 34:39Speaker 4: just not deal with this mess. And Jerry's like, oh, okay,
- 34:42Speaker 4: well we'll shoot. What's my backup plan? Doesn't have a
- 34:46Speaker 4: backup plan? You didn't think about. That's why he interviewed
- 34:48Speaker 4: Brian Schottenheimer for five hours. I mean, Craig, I could
- 34:51Speaker 4: have been the OC for the Cowboys last year. I
- 34:53Speaker 4: would probably be in line to get the head coaching job,
- 34:55Speaker 4: because that's how Jerry Jones has been working this whole
- 34:58Speaker 4: debacle as of Hey, no plan at all. So that's
- 35:02Speaker 4: that's what frustrates Cowboys fans as well. I mean, I
- 35:05Speaker 4: think the the Longhorns right now we're hiring a head coach.
- 35:10Speaker 4: I think I would have a lot more people in
- 35:11Speaker 4: my life who are Longhorns fans reaching out talking to
- 35:15Speaker 4: me about who the next head coach would be. It
- 35:16Speaker 4: was the same thing when Steve sarakishan Cowboy fans. I
- 35:19Speaker 4: haven't got a text message from anybody. I gotten a
- 35:22Speaker 4: text metches for my friends who are making fun of
- 35:23Speaker 4: the Cowboys, which all by all means go for it.
- 35:27Speaker 4: So I think I think that's the where the fan
- 35:28Speaker 4: bases at. I mean, we read through our text line, Craig,
- 35:32Speaker 4: and it's just, you know, people just talk bashing on
- 35:34Speaker 4: Jerry Jones, right, and you.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Know there's no one. No one here seems hopeful.
- 35:41Speaker 1: You said, as a teenager growing up in North Carolina,
- 35:43Speaker 1: used to wash Brian Schottenheimer's dad's car. Marty Schottenheimer, the
- 35:48Speaker 1: legendary coach of the Browns and coach the Chiefs.
- 35:52Speaker 3: And then and then then did I guess with Buffalo?
- 35:55Speaker 2: Did?
- 35:56Speaker 3: Is that right? He used to wash his car.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Yeah, he came through because he lived in in North Carolina.
- 36:00Speaker 1: This isn't passed. When he was retired right just up
- 36:03Speaker 1: north of Charlotte. He was in Buffalo for a little bit. Yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: let's see what was he Buffalo? And I'm sorry, I
- 36:10Speaker 1: think I think of San Diego. He was coaching in
- 36:12Speaker 1: San Diego, was I think it's more San Diego, Yeah,
- 36:15Speaker 1: not Buffalo.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Now.
- 36:15Speaker 1: He played for Buffalo back in the AFL days in
- 36:18Speaker 1: the sixties. If you've ever seen any of those old documentaries,
- 36:22Speaker 1: his name is so long that it starts the S
- 36:24Speaker 1: and Schottenheimer like basically on his near his elbow, on
- 36:31Speaker 1: his left arm, and then it rolls shot in Heimer
- 36:33Speaker 1: all the way around to almost his right elbow. It's
- 36:36Speaker 1: like the longest name off of that deal. So I
- 36:38Speaker 1: just wondered if he ever wore that jersey when he
- 36:39Speaker 1: came in there.
- 36:40Speaker 3: No, I never did. You never got him in his BMW.
- 36:43Speaker 4: Okay, all right, it was San Diego and the thing
- 36:46Speaker 4: at that time, I think that was Anthony lenn As
- 36:49Speaker 4: the head coach. They weren't doing too well and he
- 36:50Speaker 4: didn't have a lot of nice things to say about
- 36:52Speaker 4: his time in San Diego.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, okay, imagine that.
- 36:57Speaker 3: All right.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Up next, we're gonna hear more from jaxas women's basketed
- 37:00Speaker 1: coach Vick Shae from the eve of tonight's big game
- 37:02Speaker 1: with Tennessee.
- 37:02Speaker 3: When we continue on thirteen under the Zone, We're back.
- 37:12Speaker 6: It's the Craigway Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster and
- 37:15Speaker 6: voice of the Texas Longhearts Craig Way.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You know, we mentioned earlier that the game between LSU
- 37:29Speaker 1: and South Carolina, two of the top women's programs in
- 37:31Speaker 1: the country. Of course, South Carolina defending national champions, got
- 37:34Speaker 1: postponed to tomorrow because of the snow in Louisiana. The
- 37:37Speaker 1: snow in Louisiana postponed other games as well, including a
- 37:42Speaker 1: game in the Sun Belt Conference on the men's side
- 37:45Speaker 1: between Louisiana and Texas State. They were to have played
- 37:49Speaker 1: in the Cajun Dome. That's the basketball arena. There's an
- 37:52Speaker 1: ice basketball aren I don't think I did a game
- 37:56Speaker 1: in there one time when North Texas played in there
- 37:59Speaker 1: and part of their lighting was big chandeliers they had
- 38:03Speaker 1: in that in the Cajun Dome in Louisiana. Well anyway
- 38:08Speaker 1: there in Lafayette, and they had a ton of snow there,
- 38:11Speaker 1: record amount of snow. So Texas State was supposed to
- 38:16Speaker 1: play there, couldn't play there earlier. They're playing right now
- 38:21Speaker 1: and it's eleven to nine. The Popcats are leading in
- 38:24Speaker 1: the first half at about the thirteen minute mark.
- 38:26Speaker 3: It's not as much of a.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Slog as it was for Texas men against Missouri when
- 38:33Speaker 1: it was two to one at the first time outs
- 38:37Speaker 1: and five to four at the second time out of
- 38:40Speaker 1: the game.
- 38:41Speaker 3: The under twelve time out of that one.
- 38:43Speaker 1: The Baylor Kansas State game last night followed a similar path.
- 38:45Speaker 1: It was very similar to that Baylor was able to
- 38:49Speaker 1: kick it in the high gear in the final minutes
- 38:51Speaker 1: and pull away from k State after trailing guy spending
- 38:53Speaker 1: his twelve in the first half. Kansas was also down,
- 38:58Speaker 1: took a punch or two from TCU, got to and
- 39:00Speaker 1: got off the deck and won that contest to go
- 39:02Speaker 1: the big game against Houston this weekend. But as we
- 39:05Speaker 1: mentioned on the women's side, it is Texas and Tennessee
- 39:09Speaker 1: tonight being moved up one hour to seven because of
- 39:12Speaker 1: the post pullman of that LSU South Carolina game. So
- 39:17Speaker 1: let's hear some more about that matchup and about his
- 39:20Speaker 1: own team from Long Worn's head coach Vic Shaffer.
- 39:23Speaker 10: Hey, Vic, you know in the in the games where
- 39:26Speaker 10: you guys have gotten off the great starts, it just
- 39:29Speaker 10: seems like to me, you guys have done a better
- 39:32Speaker 10: job attacking the rim, attacking the paint, and using the
- 39:36Speaker 10: mid range shots before really going to the threes. And
- 39:41Speaker 10: my question is number one, is there a specific focus
- 39:45Speaker 10: on that to get you guys out of the gate quick?
- 39:50Speaker 2: I think our focus is always punched first, and you know,
- 39:55Speaker 2: our kids. Booker said it best the other night. She
- 39:58Speaker 2: feels like, if we're locked in on defense, that says
- 40:03Speaker 2: a lot about our focus on offense and our focus
- 40:07Speaker 2: in the game in general. Plus, our kids enjoy getting
- 40:12Speaker 2: out on the break and going in transition. You know,
- 40:16Speaker 2: we're doing a great job and our secondary. Look right now,
- 40:21Speaker 2: I can have the ball in Booker's hands or Rory's
- 40:24Speaker 2: hands in secondary and we're probably gonna get something really
- 40:28Speaker 2: good out of that. So I think, you know, our
- 40:33Speaker 2: bigs are running the floor well right now. And so
- 40:38Speaker 2: I just think, like she said, when we're locked in
- 40:41Speaker 2: on defense, it really shows that we're locked in on
- 40:46Speaker 2: both ends. And you know, it's funny and coaching, we
- 40:51Speaker 2: spend so much time on certain things.
- 40:54Speaker 3: But if your team is holding people to let's.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Just say thirty five percent field goal for Centi's defense,
- 41:02Speaker 2: why wouldn't you work sixty five percent of your practice
- 41:05Speaker 2: on transition offense.
- 41:08Speaker 5: It's not how it works, but that's the way you know,
- 41:12Speaker 5: you you would think, well, coach, you're if you're sixty
- 41:15Speaker 5: five percent of the games in transition, why aren't you
- 41:18Speaker 5: working more on that?
- 41:19Speaker 2: And so I think we do. I think we spend
- 41:22Speaker 2: time on it. It's important to us because we're you know,
- 41:27Speaker 2: when we're locked in defensively, we do get some opportunities
- 41:30Speaker 2: in transition, and obviously we've got some kids that can
- 41:33Speaker 2: really make some great plays out there in the open floor. Well,
- 41:39Speaker 2: let's go to ap AP go ahead.
- 41:43Speaker 11: Go stringure out on the winter on Monday. A question
- 41:46Speaker 11: for you about scouting Tennessee. I feel like you talk
- 41:49Speaker 11: all the time about facing teams that are hot or
- 41:51Speaker 11: on a hot street. But for you, guys, how how
- 41:55Speaker 11: dangerous is that when you're going up against a team
- 41:57Speaker 11: like Tennessee who's coming off a really hard breaking buzzer
- 42:01Speaker 11: beater low.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that, you know, ninety one, eighty six,
- 42:08Speaker 2: eighty seven, ninety three, eighty six, that's five of their
- 42:13Speaker 2: last six games offensively, they got beat seventy one to
- 42:17Speaker 2: seventy at Vanderbilt, and they didn't turn Vanderbilt over that much,
- 42:23Speaker 2: and so that's why that game was in the seventies
- 42:25Speaker 2: instead of the eighties or nineties. You know, I've as
- 42:31Speaker 2: I've watched them throughout the course of the year. I mean,
- 42:34Speaker 2: I think they're obviously they're very talented, but I think
- 42:37Speaker 2: they're resilient. I think they have a way that they
- 42:41Speaker 2: want to play, and they're going to try to impose
- 42:44Speaker 2: their will on you to play that way. And so
- 42:48Speaker 2: you know, I've spent my staff and I we've spent
- 42:51Speaker 2: a lot of time. But it's unique, but we got
- 42:57Speaker 2: to take care of the ball. That's number one. Tomorrow night,
- 43:00Speaker 2: we can't be throwing that thing all over the gym.
- 43:02Speaker 2: And then number two, we've got to do what we
- 43:06Speaker 2: do at Texas and execute, get our shots, and defend
- 43:11Speaker 2: like we want to defend two. And again, it's a
- 43:14Speaker 2: great challenge offensively. I mean, you've got kids averaging nineteen, seventeen, fourteen,
- 43:22Speaker 2: ten and a half and ten. Okay, that's they're starting five.
- 43:27Speaker 2: So somebody averaging ten points in the SEC is capable
- 43:31Speaker 2: of going for twenty. And those that are averaging nineteen
- 43:36Speaker 2: obviously they're getting that every night. Some night's getting way more.
- 43:41Speaker 2: So it's a big challenge for us. But again, I
- 43:44Speaker 2: know my kids will be excited about the challenge and
- 43:47Speaker 2: excited about the opportunity. Danny, go ahead, Vic.
- 43:54Speaker 12: They're probably some of your fans and some people around
- 43:57Speaker 12: the country who would argue that is probably the biggest
- 44:01Speaker 12: rivalry for this programs because of what Jody and Pat
- 44:05Speaker 12: did and the history of these programs. I was kind
- 44:07Speaker 12: of wondering, what are your thoughts on did history of
- 44:10Speaker 12: this rivalry and I guess kind of resuming it with
- 44:13Speaker 12: this new SEC wrinkle.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. When I when I took the job.
- 44:17Speaker 2: This was a game that had been on the schedule.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Tennessee and Stanford had been on the schedule a lot,
- 44:23Speaker 2: and UH coach Summitt and coach Conrad had played each
- 44:27Speaker 2: other every year forever until COVID hit and we had
- 44:32Speaker 2: the hiccup here, and so, you know, honored to be
- 44:37Speaker 2: a part of that legacy. You know, again, I grew
- 44:43Speaker 2: up in that day. I grew up watching those two
- 44:48Speaker 2: Hall of famers go at it. You know, I can
- 44:53Speaker 2: remember watching the games when one team might be number
- 44:56Speaker 2: one or two in the country, another might not be,
- 44:59Speaker 2: but you know, number fifteen or sixteen and number fifteen
- 45:02Speaker 2: or sixteen won the game, just watching those two go
- 45:09Speaker 2: at it and how they went at it, you know,
- 45:13Speaker 2: with their teams, how hard they played the execution. Again,
- 45:17Speaker 2: as a young coach, trying to develop my philosophy and
- 45:24Speaker 2: mold my vision for my teams in the future, and
- 45:28Speaker 2: those were two teams that I would tell myself when
- 45:31Speaker 2: I get my head coaching job, I want to play
- 45:34Speaker 2: like them. And so again I agree with you, these
- 45:41Speaker 2: are two tradition rich programs that are now We're going
- 45:46Speaker 2: to play each other every year some years twice in
- 45:51Speaker 2: the SEC. So I'm glad to be a part of
- 45:55Speaker 2: that for sure.
- 45:56Speaker 12: As a quick follow up, the last two years obviously
- 45:59Speaker 12: you all did to play. Was at a scheduling issue
- 46:02Speaker 12: or why exactly did this kind of go off the
- 46:04Speaker 12: go off the books?
- 46:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think remember we had the we had one
- 46:10Speaker 2: of my parents violate the COVID rule in the year
- 46:16Speaker 2: of COVID and had to cancel the game four hours
- 46:19Speaker 2: prior to tip. The following year we returned because we
- 46:24Speaker 2: still had a return left on that part of the schedule.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And then I think the next two the next year
- 46:32Speaker 2: we had an issue with the calendar and trying to
- 46:34Speaker 2: work it into the schedule. And then last year we
- 46:38Speaker 2: knew we were going to start in the SEC and
- 46:41Speaker 2: so we just decided, hey, we'll wait till we get
- 46:43Speaker 2: to the sec UH schedule. So you know, as we
- 46:49Speaker 2: all know, scheduling has evolved and changed, and you know
- 46:53Speaker 2: we've had we've had some different issues here at Texas
- 46:56Speaker 2: for sure, and they have to.
- 46:59Speaker 12: Goodry, go ahead, that's good afternoon.
- 47:02Speaker 13: So you're talking about, you know, paying respect to Tennessee
- 47:05Speaker 13: and Coach Caldwell, and you know, like you said, you're
- 47:08Speaker 13: not going to keep them under fifty points. You know,
- 47:11Speaker 13: they're shooting hot to three points. They're probably a pretty
- 47:15Speaker 13: scary team right now because they've been so close on
- 47:18Speaker 13: all their games.
- 47:19Speaker 2: If we were.
- 47:20Speaker 13: Talking to coach Caudwell, what would she say about the
- 47:22Speaker 13: Texas team. She's not going to keep you under eighty five,
- 47:25Speaker 13: She's not going to stop loieheyman, I'm just curious from
- 47:28Speaker 13: your perspective what.
- 47:29Speaker 2: She you know, I don't know. I don't even I
- 47:32Speaker 2: don't really know her personally. You know. The flip side
- 47:38Speaker 2: is I love my team. You know, when we're lit,
- 47:43Speaker 2: when we're really focused, I think we can play with
- 47:46Speaker 2: ebody in the country. We certainly we were disappointed in
- 47:52Speaker 2: our first half at South Carolina, but responded in the
- 47:57Speaker 2: second half guard them, held them to twenty eight. You know,
- 48:03Speaker 2: executed some really good stuff in the second half. We
- 48:05Speaker 2: didn't make shots, but we executed up to the point
- 48:08Speaker 2: where we missed the shot. So again, this team has
- 48:15Speaker 2: been really good lately in preparation. They've been really good
- 48:20Speaker 2: in their focus and understanding what we need to do
- 48:24Speaker 2: against whoever we're playing against. We had great practices leading
- 48:29Speaker 2: up to Alabama, great practices leading up to South Carolina.
- 48:34Speaker 2: We had a two day hangover against once we lost
- 48:37Speaker 2: at South Carolina going into the Auburn game. I think
- 48:40Speaker 2: it showed we still were able to go out and
- 48:43Speaker 2: be up twenty one and a half, but we didn't
- 48:45Speaker 2: finish the game right in the second half. But then
- 48:49Speaker 2: our focus leading into Maryland was outstanding again and obviously
- 48:55Speaker 2: we played really well. So I love my team. We
- 49:00Speaker 2: know the challenge in front of us. We're gonna welcome
- 49:03Speaker 2: that challenge. We're gonna go out and play our guts
- 49:06Speaker 2: out and and uh and execute and do the things
- 49:10Speaker 2: that we know are necessary to give us a chance
- 49:13Speaker 2: to win on Thursday night. Let's go back to Mark
- 49:18Speaker 2: Mark go ahead.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:20Speaker 14: As much as you praise Madison Booker for being unselfish
- 49:24Speaker 14: and usually efficient in a game like this, you're citing
- 49:28Speaker 14: all the points at Tennessee Sques, do you tell Booker
- 49:33Speaker 14: maybe she needs to look more to score, like, you know,
- 49:36Speaker 14: get to a certain number to keep up with an
- 49:39Speaker 14: opponent like that.
- 49:40Speaker 2: I don't. I don't think so. I think you you know,
- 49:44Speaker 2: I think I think what Madison's doing right now and
- 49:49Speaker 2: and and you know, uh Shaefer juniors talk to her
- 49:54Speaker 2: about it is just letting that game come to her,
- 49:57Speaker 2: you know. And and I think that's the thing for
- 50:00Speaker 2: any play any player on my team, Let the game
- 50:03Speaker 2: come to you. Shay stands out there and lets the
- 50:06Speaker 2: game come to her. The other night, wide open threes
- 50:09Speaker 2: knocks them down. You know. I just think when you
- 50:14Speaker 2: let the game come to you and you take what
- 50:16Speaker 2: the defense gives you, you don't need to press. You
- 50:20Speaker 2: don't need to put any extra pressure on yourself. Oh
- 50:23Speaker 2: my god, I gotta do this. I gotta know. You're
- 50:26Speaker 2: on a really good team. Miss is everybody on my team.
- 50:30Speaker 2: You're on a really good team. Let the game come
- 50:33Speaker 2: to you. My bigs, let the game come to you.
- 50:35Speaker 2: We're always going to play inside out. Let the game
- 50:39Speaker 2: come to you. My bigs have been really good when
- 50:41Speaker 2: they get doubled, their veryin, says Kyla. Oldacre is so unselfish.
- 50:46Speaker 2: She will kick that back out to a guard every time.
- 50:49Speaker 2: So I think, you know, and again, I think that's
- 50:53Speaker 2: what makes Maddie so special. She just so unselfish, enjoys
- 50:57Speaker 2: the past, wants to have those opportunities to make the pass,
- 51:04Speaker 2: run the offense, which I love to do, and it
- 51:07Speaker 2: makes us, I think, that much harder to prepare for
- 51:10Speaker 2: who's going to be out there. Is it Rory or
- 51:12Speaker 2: do you got Rory coming off of you know something
- 51:15Speaker 2: on the side, and you got Madison running the point
- 51:18Speaker 2: and doing some of the things that we've done with her.
- 51:21Speaker 2: I just think, again, it makes it really unique and
- 51:24Speaker 2: it's what makes us great, you know. It gives us
- 51:26Speaker 2: a chance to be really really special. And so again
- 51:31Speaker 2: it's it's a mindset and I love that about my team.
- 51:35Speaker 2: I love that about Madison.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Yeah, she's really good and she does really like distributing
- 51:41Speaker 1: the basketball as well as shooting the basketball as well.
- 51:44Speaker 3: It's a more from Vick Schaeffer.
- 51:45Speaker 1: We'll here next hour some more talking about some specifics
- 51:49Speaker 1: with Tennessee and this matchup. And again you can hear
- 51:52Speaker 1: the contest tonight on one o three point one FM,
- 51:55Speaker 1: Austin's eighty station. It's a six forty five air time.
- 51:58Speaker 1: It is a seven o'clock tip here on the zone tonight,
- 52:01Speaker 1: long worn weekly with Rodney Terry comes your way and
- 52:06Speaker 1: that will come your way tonight at six o'clock. And
- 52:12Speaker 1: so we'll have that with coach Terry out at Pluckers
- 52:14Speaker 1: the West Campus location here in Austin. More coming up
- 52:17Speaker 1: here on AM thirteen under the zone.
- 52:33Speaker 3: Back to the Craig Way Show.
- 52:35Speaker 6: Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
- 52:37Speaker 6: Texas to eight one five three zero followed by your message.
- 52:41Speaker 6: Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 52:45Speaker 1: So the first college football playoff twelve team variety has now.
- 52:51Speaker 3: Been put to bed.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Ohio State is the national champion of college football, but
- 52:58Speaker 1: it does bring about a lot of questions. What we
- 53:02Speaker 1: continued to hear throughout the course of the playoffs was
- 53:09Speaker 1: is that it was really cool to have home games
- 53:13Speaker 1: in the playoff and that the expanded twelve team field
- 53:18Speaker 1: was definitely better than the fourteen field, although obviously there
- 53:21Speaker 1: were going to be the regular heavy duty questions coming
- 53:26Speaker 1: up about seating and how this whole thing should break down.
- 53:30Speaker 1: So toward that end, here are some of the topics
- 53:35Speaker 1: that have come up, And again deferring to Heather Dentich,
- 53:39Speaker 1: who covers it as well as anybody does for ESPN,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and she did a canvassing of athletic directors and conference
- 53:49Speaker 1: commissioners to get their thoughts on the just completed twelve
- 53:55Speaker 1: team playoffs and what adjustments are changes they might suggest
- 53:59Speaker 1: or think would be in order. First of all, did
- 54:01Speaker 1: you think the twelve team playoff was a success?
- 54:03Speaker 3: Camp? I think it was.
- 54:04Speaker 4: My only you know, what's the right term gripe with
- 54:07Speaker 4: it was that maybe we shouldn't get the top four
- 54:10Speaker 4: seeds to just the top four conference champions.
- 54:13Speaker 3: Give it the top four teams.
- 54:14Speaker 4: Like I understand that that Boise State won their conference championship,
- 54:19Speaker 4: they were not the third best team in college football?
- 54:23Speaker 3: Or were they the three or four.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Seas and Arizona State was on the fourth best? Yes,
- 54:26Speaker 1: they were the four. Arizona State was the four in
- 54:28Speaker 1: Texas the five. Off of that, Well, it's interesting you
- 54:30Speaker 1: bring that up, because here's here's some of the things
- 54:35Speaker 1: that they're considering doing. Some of this sounds a little
- 54:40Speaker 1: over the top if you ask me, but some of
- 54:43Speaker 1: it makes sense too. A lot of it makes sense.
- 54:45Speaker 1: First of all, they're already talking about playoff play in games.
- 54:52Speaker 1: ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips told reporters that his league would
- 54:57Speaker 1: discuss giving its regular season champion a bye, and then
- 55:02Speaker 1: the teams that finished second and third in the league's
- 55:05Speaker 1: standings would play in the ACC title game. He said,
- 55:09Speaker 1: in other possibilities, having the top four teams play on
- 55:11Speaker 1: the final weekend of the regular season one verses four,
- 55:14Speaker 1: two versus three, with the winners playing the following Saturday
- 55:17Speaker 1: for the ACC title. Heather Dinnisch wrote that the quiet
- 55:21Speaker 1: part out low was Phillips concession that quote. Part of
- 55:25Speaker 1: the impetus of thinking about something like that end quote
- 55:28Speaker 1: is that automatic qualifiers for the playoffs starting in twenty
- 55:31Speaker 1: twenty six. There's no reason to make a significant change
- 55:34Speaker 1: to the ACC title game or any others for that matter,
- 55:36Speaker 1: if the league's number two team isn't guaranteed a playoff bid.
- 55:40Speaker 1: It's kind of like what we went through in basketball
- 55:42Speaker 1: college basketball, where folks said why have conference tournaments there
- 55:45Speaker 1: because a team that wins the conference tournament can get
- 55:49Speaker 1: an automatic bid and get in, and that adds an
- 55:52Speaker 1: extra bid for a league champ if your team is
- 55:54Speaker 1: not a one league. So, for example, if the ACC
- 55:59Speaker 1: and the Big Twelve each get two guaranteed teams in
- 56:01Speaker 1: a fourteen team field, it's likely the SEC and the
- 56:05Speaker 1: Big Ten would push for four teams each. Leaders within
- 56:09Speaker 1: the Big Ten have long discussed automatic qualifiers and determining
- 56:12Speaker 1: on the field who gets them at how before anyone,
- 56:15Speaker 1: including the Power four conferences determines how to produce the
- 56:18Speaker 1: best playoff teams. The commissioners first need to decide what
- 56:21Speaker 1: the playoff will look like in twenty twenty six and beyond.
- 56:25Speaker 1: There are people who favor the three three two two model.
- 56:29Speaker 1: For those who unfamiliar with that, that's three Big ten,
- 56:32Speaker 1: three SEC two acc to Big twelve. They say that
- 56:37Speaker 1: model has been taken off the table good. The Big
- 56:40Speaker 1: ten in the SEC, which had the bulk of the
- 56:42Speaker 1: control over the future playoff format, will continue these discussions
- 56:45Speaker 1: at a joint meeting in February. All right, So that's
- 56:48Speaker 1: that's one deal, all right. Now, how about to your point,
- 56:52Speaker 1: the seating change. If there's one thing she writes that
- 56:56Speaker 1: the ten FBS commissioners might be able to unanismate, unanimously
- 57:01Speaker 1: agree on for twenty twenty five, it would be it
- 57:06Speaker 1: could be changing how the twelve playoff teams are seated
- 57:09Speaker 1: on selection day. The most feedback surrounding the twelve team
- 57:13Speaker 1: format was about the seating, which gave the Big ten
- 57:16Speaker 1: and SEC champs a more difficult path through the bracket
- 57:19Speaker 1: than their runners up, like Georgia in Lake Texas. It
- 57:23Speaker 1: also allowed for a lower ranked team such as Number
- 57:27Speaker 1: twelve Arizona State, the Big twelve champ to earn a
- 57:30Speaker 1: first round by over higher ranked playoff participants. One commissioner said,
- 57:34Speaker 1: we had good intentions for doing things the way we did,
- 57:37Speaker 1: but when you actually have real life examples and see
- 57:40Speaker 1: how they pan out, we may need to look at that.
- 57:42Speaker 1: So to make any changes for next season, the ten
- 57:46Speaker 1: FBS commissioners, this is al this has to work. The
- 57:49Speaker 1: ten FBS commissioners and the athletic Director of Notre Dame
- 57:53Speaker 1: Bovakua have to unanimously agree on them. They met in Atlanta,
- 57:58Speaker 1: but they tabled what were referred to as the medior
- 58:01Speaker 1: discussions until February twenty fifth in Dallas. Keep that in mind.
- 58:04Speaker 1: They're also going to discuss giving the committee's top four
- 58:08Speaker 1: teams the first round bys instead of conference champions, something
- 58:13Speaker 1: that's been at least publicly divisive, and that one source
- 58:16Speaker 1: said could be one of the many politically interesting conversations
- 58:21Speaker 1: that will have. So that's, you know, that's that's the
- 58:26Speaker 1: different that Pete Bavaka, the athletic director of Notre Dame,
- 58:28Speaker 1: was talking about. That well, okay, and then there's one
- 58:31Speaker 1: other thing to point out here. Sources have said that
- 58:35Speaker 1: leaders from the SEC and the Big Ten, two big
- 58:38Speaker 1: power brokers, are going to meet for a day in
- 58:42Speaker 1: New Orleans to discuss the future format and overall NCAA governance.
- 58:48Speaker 1: One athletic director said, Ultimately, the alliance just keeps getting stronger.
- 58:51Speaker 1: We've got so many like minds in that room. We've
- 58:54Speaker 1: got to figure out, now that we've already had one
- 58:57Speaker 1: meeting and a lot's happened between then and out, how
- 58:59Speaker 1: to figure out how the next steps to stabilize things.
- 59:01Speaker 1: So Athletic directors in both the SEC and the Big
- 59:05Speaker 1: Ten have expressed a desire to their respective commissioners to
- 59:08Speaker 1: push for four automatic qualifiers each in a fourteen team
- 59:12Speaker 1: expanded playoff and a four to four two two model
- 59:17Speaker 1: that would assure the SEC and the Big Ten four
- 59:20Speaker 1: teams each, and the ACC and the Big Twelve two
- 59:23Speaker 1: teams each, plus one guaranteed spot for the group of
- 59:27Speaker 1: five and one true at large bid.
- 59:30Speaker 3: What do you make of that?
- 59:31Speaker 1: Four four two two four for the SEC, four for
- 59:34Speaker 1: the Big Ten, two for the ACC, two for the
- 59:41Speaker 1: Big Twelve, and then one true at large bid and
- 59:46Speaker 1: one guaranteed.
- 59:48Speaker 3: Spot for the group of five. Why don't we just
- 59:50Speaker 3: put the twelve best teams in the playoff.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Because you have conferences wanting to be represented and coach
- 59:56Speaker 1: and athletic directors and conference commissioners their seat at the table. Well,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: then get a better team.
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: If you're worried about that, I mean, it's just I
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: just I think it's like, if you know professional sports,
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: we got to have at least two teams from the
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: AFC North, one from the now it should be the
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: twelve best teams in college football.
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: Well, they don't do that in the NFL, but the
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: NFL has you have four you have divisions, you have division.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: Champions, you have four champions, but then you have three
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: wild cards. There's no wildcards in here's one team from
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: each conference gets.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: In, Yeah, into the super Bowl. But I'm saying into
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: the playoff. You have division champs. Just like we pointed
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: out the other day, we were talking about Seattle getting in.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: It's seven and nine one year.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: But with this format, then that means a team from
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: at least of the Big Twelve gets two teams four
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: four teams.
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: No, no, Big twelve will get two.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Yeah, two for the Big Twelve, two for the ACC,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: four for the SEC, and four for the Big ten
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: with one group of five and one true at large.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: My point is that there's gonna be years where the
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: Big twelve is not worthy of two teams, and there's
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: going to be years where they might be worthy of three.
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: So why do we have to put a limitation on this?
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Again, that's about the representation for the conference commissioners. That's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: why that's going to be that way. I think, all right,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: we'll be back to wrap up our number two here.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the zone. I'm thirteen under the zone,
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Craig Way, alongside the producer, Cameron Parker. Glad to have
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: you with us. We talked quite a bit of basketball.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: We've heard from Vick Shaffer, Texas women's head coach in
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: each of these first two hours. We're going to hear
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: more from Vic coming up in this third hour, talking
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: about a lot of specifics about this matchup with the
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Tennessee Lady Balls, big matchup tonight, number seven Texas, number seven, Tennessee,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: two of the most traditioned Leyden programs in the women's game,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: and we'll hear from Vic about that coming up in
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: just a few moments. Also, some more men's college basketball
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: notes and a reminder, Long Worn Weekly with head coach
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Roddy Terry comes your way tonight six o'clock at Pluckers
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: the West Campus location live as heard here on thirteen
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: hundred Zone.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: That'll be tonight at six o'clock.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: And I think Devon Pryor will be joining us tonight
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: out at Pluckers, our Longhorn player guest, So that's coming
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: up tonight. I hope you make it out the Pluckers. Listen,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: why not do the daily double? Come on out the Pluckers.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I enjoy some great wings, have a great time there
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: with Long Worn Weekly with Artie, and then zip right
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: down the road just a little bit to a Moody
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Center for this big matchup between Texas and Tennessee. It
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: could be close to a sellout, and I did a
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: few tickets for bating for it, so it might be
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: worth the investment to check out.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: I want to get to a couple of NFL notes.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: One of those happens to concern the team that I
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: root for, but it has a larger scope than just
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the fact that the Rams are involved in this. There
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: was a report from Sarah Barshop of ESPN dot com.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: Because the Rams are still in that kind of purgatory
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: with Matthew Stafford, their quarterback who's been so good and
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: when he's.
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: Healthy, he's really really good.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: He completed sixty six percent of his passes this season
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: for three seven hundred and sixty two yards twenty touchdowns,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: did have any interceptions, but it was really good. Had
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: no interceptions in the playoffs, and the two playoff games
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: they played played really really well. They just don't know
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: if he's going to be their quarterback next year. And
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: this doesn't have to do with a contract restructuring, which
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: is what happened last year. This comes down to whether
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: he wants to continue playing now. They asked Sean McVeagh
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: about this and he said he hoped that there would
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: be clarity sooner than later in the offseason. Stafford said
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: after the loss to the Eagles last Sunday in that
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Divisional round that he wanted to and here's the quote,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: takes some time to think about his NFL future. And
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: then when he was asked if he still has football
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: left in him, he said, sure, feels like it, but
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: he has not made a definite decision on whether he's
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: going to come back. And last year, the Rams and
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Stafford worked to a similar situation, but they agreed to
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: an adjusted contract on the day that the team reported
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: a training camp, and Sean McVay said, quote, here's his quote.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: It's pretty strong words. We don't want to have to
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: go We don't want to have that go on again.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: I don't think that's good for anybody.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: I think that sooner or later, being able to get
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: that clarity, understanding, clear, open and honest communication. I think
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: there's a lot of love coming from our part. I
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: think there's a lot of appreciation coming from his part
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: as well, and I think a lot sooner than later
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: is an ideal scenario. And then McVeigh was asked would
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: he definitely say that unless Stafford retires, he would definitely
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: be playing for the Rams this season. McVeigh said, here's
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: the quote. We'll talk about all those things at the
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: appropriate time. He said, I know he's playing really good football. Obviously,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I love him, love working with him. What he's meant
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: or a football team has been a measurable in a
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: positive way. And he also said the quarterback is always
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: the first thing in mind as it relates to how
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: you move forward with the team and said when the
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: Rams sit down they'll discuss the next steps with staff.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: For of course, he had the rib injury. His wife
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Kelly said on the podcast yesterday he cracked four ribs
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: in that win of the forty nine ers in week fifteen,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: and McVeigh said after the game the medical staff did
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: imaging of his ribs. Nothing showed up on that imaging,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: and McVeigh said it still could just kind of continue
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: to irritate him. It didn't affect his ability to practice
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: anything play related. And then before the Minnesota game when
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: he did get the MRI scan there showed some stress reactions.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: He goes, that was what what communicated to me. It
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: didn't limit him on practice. He said, he's as tough
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: as he gets. It's like anything else. As the season
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: goes on, players accumulate things that they work through when
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: you play as many games as they do. So anyway,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: the reason why I also bring this Upcam is because yeah,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: obviously he's playing really well and I hope he returns
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: as a Rams fan, but if he doesn't, if he
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: decides to call it a career, here comes the trickle
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: down about quarterbacks all around the National Football League because,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: as has been said, not just here, but in so
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: many other places. What a heavy duty commodity it is
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: to have a really good quarterback. And the teams that
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: are struggling the most are teams with quarterback issues, the
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: teams that are having the most success.
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: Look at the Washington Commanders.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Could anybody have predicted that the Washington Commanders would be
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: in the Final four? No, because nobody could have predicted
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: that jayde Daniels would play as well. As said now,
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: it's not always all on the quarterback. But just like
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: McVeigh said, it starts with the quarterback, and you've got
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: to have a good one to have a shot to
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: make a move.
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: And I can tell you this, they're not getting there
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: with Jimmy g He's a backup.
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: And I know he was quarterback for the forty nine
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: ers when they were in the Super Bowl. There's a
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: long laundry list of quarterbacks, considerable length list of quarterbacks
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: who played in Super Bowls. Some even won Brad Johnson
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: with Tampa Bay, Trent Dilford with Baltimore.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: There's some who.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Won Super Bowls with having yeah, okay quarterbacks and some
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: that got there with yeh okay quarterbacks and then went
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: David Woodley of the Dolphins was one of those guys.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: So there's been different things.
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: Listen.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Folks could even point to Jared Goff when he played
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: for the Rams when they went to the Super Bowl
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: about quarterbacks who were.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Okay but not great.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: But if you're gonna take that next step has been
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: said at nausey, your quarterback better be good, real good.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: I think the Rams would love to have Stafford come
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: back and thirty seven years old, and if he decides
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: to retire, you're in a tricky spot because you have
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: a late first round draft pick. Most of the top
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: quarterbacks are probably going to go well before or the
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: Rams have their selection. So you look at guys like,
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe Sam Donald, right, you know, he
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: played in Koc's offense in Minnesota, kind of similar to
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: what Sean McVay wants to do, and maybe you draft
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: a quarterback a little bit later on in this draft,
- 1:08:14Speaker 4: signed Donald to two three year deal and kind of
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: see what you have with him and then kind of
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: see what you have through the draft and go through there.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: But him retiring will put you guys in a real
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: tough spot. And even to day, Craig seeing you know,
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: Cooper cup trade rumors.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Yeah, coming out, those were those those trade rumors were
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: really hot when the Rams were one and four and
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: it looked like they were gonna completely crater. Obviously, they
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: turned it around and they won nine of their last
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: I guess it was last twelve games to finish ten
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: and seven in the division. But yeah, you figured that
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: would probably start up again here at season's end. So
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: we'll see, we'll see how all of that goes, all right.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: So anyway, the couple of that, I just wanted to
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: hit on that football note because also Bill Bartenwell did
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: a piece on some of the greatest rookie seasons in
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: NFL history, and he puts Jade Daniels season right up
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: there with some of the best rookie seasons of all
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: time in the NFL, and it's a big reason why
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: the Commanders, like we said, are playing in the NFC Championship.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: All Right, up next, we're going to hear more from
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Vick Schaefer, Texas women's basketball head coach when we continue
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: on thirteen Under the.
- 1:09:27Speaker 6: Zone and we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have
- 1:09:35Speaker 6: a message for Craig, Share it by using the talkback
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: feature on the Ihearts radio.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: App continuing on this Thursday afternoon. Like we mentioned, it's
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: a big basketball game tonight at Moody Center, seventh ran Texas,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: number seventeen Tennessee.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: It's a conference game.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I've done a lot of Texas versus Tennessee women's games,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: and this is probably more impactful than any of those
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: because those games were all non conference games played in November, December,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: that sort of thing. So here you are in the
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: late stages of January, approaching the midway mark of the
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: conference schedule. It's a big game tonight at Moody Center,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: which you can hear on one of three point one FM,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: Austin's eighty station with a six forty five air time.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: It's a seven o'clock tip.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: It got moved forward as a trickle down because LSU's
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: inability to get to South Carolina for what would have
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: been an earlier game, which would have been six, and
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: the Texas Tennessee game would have been eight, but they
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: were snowed in Baton Rouge, so they couldn't get there.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: So television asked Texas to move the game up an hour.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: They agreed to do it, and that's when it'll be
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: at seven o'clock. Let's hear some more now from Texas
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: women's head coach Bick Shafer.
- 1:10:50Speaker 12: I think this is kind of a big picture question,
- 1:10:53Speaker 12: and I guess you call it to toe the line
- 1:10:54Speaker 12: a little bit with your answer. But I don't know
- 1:10:56Speaker 12: if you saw Bill Penalty's comments last week about he
- 1:11:01Speaker 12: was upset with how Audie was being kind of defended
- 1:11:04Speaker 12: and officiated and kind of echoed what you've been saying
- 1:11:07Speaker 12: about Kylon Taylor. And I'm kind of wondering this morning.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: As a whole.
- 1:11:12Speaker 12: I don't know if fanessa is the right word, but
- 1:11:13Speaker 12: is it gotten to a point where it's just too
- 1:11:16Speaker 12: hard for you know, these bigs to kind of shine
- 1:11:19Speaker 12: and do their thing or how I guess you kind
- 1:11:22Speaker 12: of know what I'm asking, but how you're just your
- 1:11:24Speaker 12: thoughts on that.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm frustrated, I can tell you. You know, I'm getting
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: close to being where Kim Molkie was back when she
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: had Brittney Grinder and you know, Grinder was being you know,
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: wasn't being officiated fairly. And you know it's funny when
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: coaches have them, they their their defense. I've had them
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: my whole career, but when they don't have the bigs
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: like we have, then all of a sudden, they're wanting
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: they're wanting it a different way. They're wanting it, you know,
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: they're wanting it to be completely you know, flipped, and
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: so uh you know, I see that today with teams
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: that don't have that true five like we do, and
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: we're really blessed with that, and you know, I get it.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: It's you know, it's it's hard sometimes because you don't
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: see it a lot. You know, you're seeing more five
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: out stuff and and less power you know, players like
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: the big fives of the past. But and so you know,
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: it is a challenge. I know in defense of of
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: of our officials, I know it's hard. But at the
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: same time, it is what it is, and those kids deserve.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: I mean, if I told you how many times Kyla
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: Oldacre comes over to the side and said, would you
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: please tell them they are hitting me in the face?
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: Would you please tell them to tell them to stop
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: letting them hit me in the face. You know, that's
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: just that's unacceptable, and it's you know, I owe it
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: to that kid, and I get you know, to defend
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: her number one, I've got a coacher to make sure
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: her technique is on point perfect, not fair.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: She has to be on point perfect.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: She won't get away with anything egregious or extra versus.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Sometimes the defense is allowed that and so that's you know,
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: that's the challenge. But again, I get it, you know,
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: I understand the challenges that come with it. But at
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: the end of the day, you know, we're blessed with
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: the two really good power five plays, and you know
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: we're gonna keep using them. We're gonna keep going to them,
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: and you know, I know they're trying that. I do know,
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: and uh, and I can appreciate that.
- 1:14:12Speaker 15: Hey, Vic with with Leah looked like she found a
- 1:14:15Speaker 15: little spark in the second half knowing her limitations. What
- 1:14:20Speaker 15: kind of X factor is or is she because of
- 1:14:23Speaker 15: the way she can kind of navigate the paint a
- 1:14:26Speaker 15: little differently than than your other post players.
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, when when she's feeling good in spry,
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: you know, when she's got a little pep in her stuff,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: she's she makes us different. And uh, you know, you
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: know what that kid does to try to allow herself
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: to be the best she can be right now is
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: is amazing. I appreciate her so much. Uh, to know
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: what she's going through to know what she has done
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: to help her to give herself a chance, U, what
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: our medical team is doing to you know, help her
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: get to a point where she can function and play
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: and be effective. So yeah, she makes a big difference.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: And again, I'm excited for her because I think she
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: is feeling good and it's it's obviously showing in her
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: play and she brings a lot to the table, you know,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: So I'm happy and excited for her.
- 1:15:29Speaker 9: Yeah, Vicky, you say you're not going to hold them
- 1:15:31Speaker 9: to fifty, but we all know you and Hi, you
- 1:15:34Speaker 9: set the bar. So do you tell your team at
- 1:15:37Speaker 9: sixty or do you give them an actual number that
- 1:15:40Speaker 9: you'd fo on defense?
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: But We're not going to give them a number. And
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: I'm not going to say anything. It's not possible. I
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: know my team, and you know what, if you told
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: them something like that, they're liable to go out and
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: try to show me, you know. And so you know
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: when I say that, that's out of complete respect for
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: a team averaging eighty five point five points a game.
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: You know, Maryland was really top ten in the country offensively,
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: and you know we did a great job defending them
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: the other night, So I'm not going to say anything's
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: not possible. Again, I love my team. I love their
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: competitive spirit and their toughness on most nights, and they
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: have shown, you know me, throughout the course of the
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: season they can get pretty locked in on certain things
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: offensively and defensively. So but what I'm a telling you
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: is is we got a big challenge in front of
- 1:16:44Speaker 2: us because this team is as good offensively as any
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: team I've seen in a long time. And you know,
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: it's it's five people that you can't keep your eye,
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: you can't really help from anywhere, and you know that's
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: the challenge that we have right now.
- 1:17:05Speaker 10: Vig this might be a better question for coach Caldwell,
- 1:17:07Speaker 10: but what do you think what does it mean to
- 1:17:09Speaker 10: the sport that Tennessee's brand has come back to life?
- 1:17:14Speaker 10: And what's your best past summon story?
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I think you know right now in
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: our game, certainly, I don't know that the brand. You know,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: Coach Jolly always had those kids playing hard. They didn't
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: you know, they struggled a little bit, but they struggle
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: In terms of the history of Tennessee. They were in
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: the NCAA tournament every year, but the standard there like
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: the standard here. It's just different, and it's you know,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: it's what we sign up for as coaches, but it's different.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: And so, you know, I think I'm sure their fan
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: base is super excited about their team and the success
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: that they've had. And you know where they are right now.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: They're fifteen and three and playing well. Again, lost three
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: games by four points, so I mean they've been in
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: every game, but made thirty three threes in a game
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: one night. I mean, that's pretty phenomenal. I mean, think
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: about that, y'all. Thirty three threes in a game. That's crazy.
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: So I'm sure they're excited about it. I'm not very
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: excited about it, but they are. And so, you know, again,
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: I think anything anytime, you know, our programs are mentioned
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: with some of the better programs across the country, it's
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: always a good thing for our two universities because fair
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: or not, that's the expectation. And again, it's what we
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: sign up for when we decide to coach here. So
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: that summit stories. You know, there's two things that come
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: to mind when I think of the University of Tennessee
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: and women's basketball, And early in my career, y'all when
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: I was at Arkansas, Al Brown was on Coach Summit's
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: staff and we'd go the SEC Tournament every year and
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: Al Brown would be bring his box of folders on
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: every team and he would sit there throughout the day
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: because their team never played on the first day or
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: the second day, and he would scout everybody in person.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: And just the way Al carried himself, Coach Brown carried himself.
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: He had a presence, he had a class about him.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: He was a pro. And I noticed that as a
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: young assistant, and I'll be honest that and be that
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: person growing up as an assistant at Arkansas and then
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: at A and M, I would do I came to
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: do the same thing and when we went you know,
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: when we left Arkansas, I would do that in the
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: Big twelve, you know over at A and M. And
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: the coaches in the Big twelve ended up complaining that
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: I was sitting press row scouting everybody, and so the
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: conference office after about the second or third years, asked
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: me to move up into the stands that I could
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: only scout the one team or the two teams that
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: we potentially could be playing the following day. And so
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: you know I did that. I wouldn't even sit down
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: there anymore. I just sit up in the stands. But
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: that's what you learn if you're paying attention. It's what
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: you learn in this game. And I'm always paying attention.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: I'm always watching other people. And again, when I was
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: a young coach, a young assistant, and I saw those
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: teams that coach Summit had, I always said, I want
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: my team to look like her team. I want my
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: team to play like her team. When they got off
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: the bus, they looked like a national champion. They looked
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: like an SEC champion. You can't be an SEC champion
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: if you don't look like it getting off the bus.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: And I remember going to Mississippi State and telling my staff, A,
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: we don't look like an SEC team right now getting
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: off the bus. First thing we've got to do is
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: recruit SEC bodies. Then we'll coach them to be SEC champions.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: And that's what we did. But I learned that watching,
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: you know, her teams, watching how hard they played, how
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: they rebounded the basketball. Yeah, they defended, played hard, but
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: they were going to beat your butt on the on
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: the boards. And my teams still don't aren't quite as
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: good rebounding as i'd like them to be, but it
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: didn't because I'm not trying to get them there. And
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: I've learned that from her, you know, understanding that was
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: her philosophy. I remember one night when I was at Arkansas.
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: We went in there and somehow this was in their heyday.
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: We were up like thirty eight to twenty nine at half,
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: and man, we came off the floor and we're standing
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: out in the hall talking about our adjustments we're going
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: to make. And I looked at coach and you could
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: hear our locker room. It sounded like dog gone party.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Our kids were so excited and juiced up, jacked up.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: And I looked at him, I said, you know what's coming.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: I said, their locker room didn't like that one, and
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: they're getting the Riot Act read to them, and I said,
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: we'd better be ready. We opened up the second half
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: and Tennessee went on a thirty two to four run
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: and we couldn't even get the ball into our offense.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: They were all over us, like stink on you know
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: what and it. But that's that's her, that's her teams,
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: that's the expectation, that's her demanding her team to be elite.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: And you know, I wish I had a fun story,
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: but I just don't have one. It usually when you
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: played her teams, that usually didn't end very fun.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: So there it is. The comments from long orange Head
- 1:23:44Speaker 3: coach Vick Schaeffer.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: Again.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: The game is at seven o'clock tonight against Tennessee. It's
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: an SEC network plus telecat or SEC network excuse me,
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: telecast and of course you can hear it on one
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: oh three point one FM. All right, we've got some
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: NBA notes coming up next. When we continue on third under.
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: The zone, it's the craig Way Show with the voice
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: of the Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I don't often do this, but it's but these types
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: of rulings like what I'm about to share with you
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: our things are pretty commonplace when it comes to high
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: school athletics in the state of Texas. Understand that not
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: only in this day and time of high school athletics,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: but even going back decades, there is always a grumble.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: There is always a complaint about from a one or
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: more specific high schools in the school district about a
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: student athlete who's participating at another school in their district,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: and that the student may have moved there for athletic purposes,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: or he's not academically eligible, or there's things like that,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: and these cases have become a little more acute, i
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: would say in recent years, especially with things going on
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: a lot of transferring back and forth. We've seen where
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: Duncanville High School got stripped of a state championship playing
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: ineligible players you had. Also, most recently, Faith Family Academy
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Oak Cliff had won back to back state titles and
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: their program has been.
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: Barred from being able to play.
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: In the state tournament or in the high school state
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: playoffs this year, so they're playing what's called an outlaw
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: schedule or an independent league schedule. So anyway, there's things
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: like this that happen quite a bit. And usually what
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: happens is when a school rule is first found by
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: its own district executive committee to violated rules, they will
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: meet out punishment and it might be a player ineligible
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: or a team ineligible or something like that, and then
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: that school can appeal it to the state Executive Committee
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: of the UIL and then they meet and they decide, Well,
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: here's like a typical day of something like that. Happened
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: several cases for the State Executive Committee of the UIL,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: and they issued some rulings instead of and some issued
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: some penalties today. First of all, and it does not
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: give the names, but a student athlete from Fluteville from
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: Hendrickson High School was denied an appeal for varsity eligibility
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: upholding the previous ruling of the district Executive Committee. Usually
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: that means the student athlete was found to have transferred
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: for athletic purposes. Now here's some other interesting stuff. The
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: former lewis High School had basketball coach Mario Martin and
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: former Lewisville High School volunteer assistant coach Exevious Booker were
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: issued a three year suspension from coaching within the UIL
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: along with the public reprimand and must appear before the
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: committee before coaching again. It's kind of a show cause thing.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: The committee accepted the District Executive Committee's decision to place
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: Lewisville's boys basketball team on two years probation and issue
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: of public reprimand. When something that serious happens, it comes
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: to the other thing that's really become commonplace of late, unfortunately,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: and that's recruiting, recruiting student athletes to move into the area,
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: and then you had this bizarre case with Trinity Leadership
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: in Cedar Hill.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: Now this is a.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Charter school, and charter schools have had their issues with
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: the UIL, including the Prime Prep Academy that Dion Sanders
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: had for a while, but Trinity Leadership had boys basketball
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: coach Adrian Hawkins was issued three years probation, a public
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: reprimand suspended for the rest of this season. And Texas
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: Leadership Public Schools Athletics was placed on three years probation,
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: given a public rec demand, and has to provide a
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: written plan for athletic department process improvements. This Trinity Leadership
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: Cedar Hill boys team has to forfeit the last four
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: games of the regular season and they're suspended from postseason play. So,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: in other words, what we're seeing now become unfortunately more commonplace,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: is recruiting and charges of recruiting and accusations of recruiting,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: and things wind up being going before the state Executive Committee.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: And if you're hauled up before the magistrate in this
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: case that sort of thing, chances are not good.
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: Because it starts at the district level.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: The UIL asked that the districts settle their disputes or
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: issue whatever reprimands or punishment, and then if it gets appealed,
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: then they have to step in. And that's exactly what happened.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: Speaking of punishment and appeal. Did you see the story
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: about the podcast with Draymond Green?
- 1:29:04Speaker 3: Have you seen that? Not recently? Okay?
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: You going like this.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: Then, because I rarely have seen something that you haven't
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: already seen the thought, especially when it comes to the NBA,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: especially when it comes to the NBA.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: But I got a kick out of this.
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: I don't listen to Draymond Green podcast. I don't want
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: to hear him right right, let's talk honestly.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: Okay. This was his comment to a to a podcast
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: and and it was his comment. I think it was
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: a podcast with Jordan Poole. Okay, so everybody knows what happened.
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: They hate each other. So podcasts with Jordan.
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: No, no, no, the two of them weren't doing it together.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: He was made aware of the comments Poole's comments. Yes, yeah, okay, so, uh,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: it's interesting you bring that up. You know that happened
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: more than two years ago, and it really did kind
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: of mess things up in the Warriors life. Okay, So
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: he apologized back then kind of and Pool said on Saturday,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: the quote was that he loves quote. Most of those
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: guys over there was his quote, and he was asked
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: about the warm reception he got in his return to
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Chase Center as a member of the Washington Wizards.
- 1:30:20Speaker 3: So he said, yeah, most of those guys. Okay.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: So yesterday Green was on his podcast with Baron Davis.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: I didn't know the two of them did a podcast together,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: but anyway, Green posted a tweet.
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: Draymond said, I really am sorry. I saw that. That's hilarious.
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So then here's what he said on
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: the podcast. He said, I responded because it's been three years.
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: He said, like, let's move on.
- 1:30:50Speaker 3: We moved on. I really am sorry.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: That statement by Pool was kind of like it was
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: looking for some more sympathy, kind of keep wanting to
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: make me out to be the bad guy. Move on, bro,
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: it is what it is. I'm sorry I should have
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: punched him, but it happened. Let's move on. Guess what, Draymond,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: you are the bad guy.
- 1:31:08Speaker 3: You were the bad guy.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: You're still the bad guy. So Green later publicly apologized
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: to Pull After the punch, Green was fined by the Warriors,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: voluntarily left the team for a time. As we know,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: didn't miss any games or face any discipline. So Green
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: said on the podcast, I kind of go back and
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: forth on this. I know what was wrong, but you
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: can't call him out a B word and push him
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: and not get hit either. So it kind of sit
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: in both of those spaces sometimes, like the reality he
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: is the answer is probably somewhere in the middle, right.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I shouldn't have knocked him out like that. If anything,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: it should have hemmed him up. It was just kind
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: of a natural reaction. I think for him, you're kind
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: of bringing that back up on yourself. Like when you
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: do that, you just bring up that moment back on yourself.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: You just got to move on and keep pushing. Man
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: gotta let it go.
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: And he has not let it go obviously, and he's
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: playing for one of the worst teams in the NBA
- 1:32:03Speaker 4: and the Warriors are struggling to be in the plan.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: By the way, if you're keeping count, Draymond has eight
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: technical fouls this year, but only one ejection.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: He had four last year. He said, I want people
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: to say, man.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: Right here was a little bleak, but then look where
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: it went from there, and that's due because he took accountability.
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: He said, regardless of how I felt about the Rudy situation,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: the Nurkic situation, the Jordan Poole incident, in any situation,
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: I took it on the chin, I took accountability for it,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and I moved forward.
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: There.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: They're my fault. I needed to be better and I failed.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: We all failed, but I'm not a failure.
- 1:32:40Speaker 3: By the way.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: He injured his calf last weekend and he missed last
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: night's game at sacrament I watched some of that game
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: last night. Nice nice run by the Kings to come
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: back and beat the Warriors in that game. So anyway,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: I thought you'd get a kick out of that because
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: Draymond Green always provides entertainment.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: Yeah, he does.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: Maybe one of the benefits of these player podcasts is,
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: you know, conversations like that. But Warriors have not been
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: the same since the Draymond Greed and Jordan Pole incident.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: On both sides.
- 1:33:10Speaker 4: Jordan Pole's getting his shots up, he's getting his money,
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: he's probably having a good time going out partying, but
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: he's not competing for NBA championship.
- 1:33:17Speaker 3: And for the Warriors, they aren't either.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: Yeah, that's true. All right, we'll be back to wrap
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: up today's edition of the program. Here, I'm thirteen under
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: the zone.
