Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: But right now we've got a new report out today
- 0:02Speaker 1: comparing Auckland City's strengths and weaknesses compared to the rest
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the world. So the Queen City is punching above
- 0:08Speaker 1: its weight in diversity, sustainability and culture, but serious action
- 0:14Speaker 1: is needed in economic opportunities, skill set and innovation. So
- 0:18Speaker 1: Kate Sutton is the lead for the Future of Auckland
- 0:21Speaker 1: at Deloitte and joins me. Now, good morning to your Kate.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hi, how are you? Thanks for having me on.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's a pleasure. Aukland's a lovely place to live, but
- 0:28Speaker 1: the economy is a bit stagnant. Is that fair? You
- 0:31Speaker 1: know what jumps out at you from this.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Report we've been We've been doing this report for three
- 0:37Speaker 2: years without partners, the Committee for Auckland and Auckland Council,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and this is the third year we've been running. It's benchmarking.
- 0:44Speaker 2: So what it does is it compes Auckland, as you said,
- 0:46Speaker 2: not just to the rest of the world, but to
- 0:48Speaker 2: comparable cities globally. So the whole thing is how are
- 0:51Speaker 2: we doing compared to our sort of peer cities. And certainly,
- 0:55Speaker 2: although it shows we've had some grain shoots over the
- 0:58Speaker 2: last year you talked about you mentioned that the headline
- 1:01Speaker 2: resilience certainly sustainability and culture where we do well. That's right.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Our kind of prosperity and economy pieces is lagging. Particularly
- 1:11Speaker 2: we've been focusing this year on productivity in Auckland.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Well, why is the productivity down? Why is the productivity
- 1:18Speaker 1: not good? How can we improve the city's business performance?
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, so, I mean for Auckland we're a forty percent
- 1:26Speaker 2: of the GDP, which is pretty good comparably globally, it
- 1:30Speaker 2: could be higher. However, our productivity per capita is lower
- 1:35Speaker 2: by about twenty percent from our kind of peer cities Copenhagen,
- 1:38Speaker 2: Vancouver often. So what does that mean. It means that
- 1:42Speaker 2: we're doing more for left and there's kind of some
- 1:45Speaker 2: structural reasons behind that, kind of low capital investment and
- 1:50Speaker 2: efficient land use, which we know the council has been
- 1:52Speaker 2: doing quite a lot of work on our export intensity
- 1:55Speaker 2: and unfortunately some of our kind of management capability, so
- 1:58Speaker 2: there's a step up that to be done. The report
- 2:02Speaker 2: does go into some recommendations around kind of structures that
- 2:06Speaker 2: are required. A lot of this is around we've got
- 2:08Speaker 2: this great opportunity with the city and regional deal. I'm
- 2:11Speaker 2: not sure if you've been following it. It's a bit wonky,
- 2:14Speaker 2: but it is important. The government have signed an MoU
- 2:17Speaker 2: with Auckland councils saying they're going to do a deal
- 2:19Speaker 2: to try and you know turbo charge Auckland in terms
- 2:23Speaker 2: of it being super sific. Well, that is opportunities in
- 2:26Speaker 2: that deal.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That is the big question. I mean who is responsible
- 2:29Speaker 1: for driving the change? Is it local government? Is it
- 2:31Speaker 1: meyor Brown? Or is it the central government? I mean
- 2:34Speaker 1: who's in charge? Who should push this?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Well very much so globally it shows that it has
- 2:40Speaker 2: to be triparth a or multi part a, so I
- 2:42Speaker 2: know that that can be a little bit inconvenient. We've
- 2:44Speaker 2: got the Minister Watts today, We've got Mayor Brown today,
- 2:47Speaker 2: and certainly we'll be saying to them what is the
- 2:49Speaker 2: what are the drivers for you and what what what
- 2:50Speaker 2: does deliverability look like for you? But certainly the private
- 2:53Speaker 2: sector plays a key role. So many of your listeners
- 2:56Speaker 2: will get that. You know, what are the things that
- 2:58Speaker 2: the private sector needs to do and invest in their businesses,
- 3:02Speaker 2: invest in people to ensure that they stay in New
- 3:05Speaker 2: Zealand and kind of reap the benefits from these great things,
- 3:07Speaker 2: the resilience and the sustainability and the culture side of
- 3:10Speaker 2: our city.
