- 0:17This is Cameron Minter and our host with the
- 0:21most is Jessica Coffie. No, you didn't. No, you
- 0:27didn't. I wanted to come in on when you said
- 0:29Dickerson. I mean, but you didn't. You rushed
- 0:33me. I'm sorry. Jessica Coffie Dickerson. I mean,
- 0:42you don't have to get used to this name. You
- 0:44are the one that decided to keep Coffie. And
- 0:48now your name is long, and now you can't wait.
- 0:51Jessica Coffie Dickerson. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:56You're going to have to get used to it. How's
- 0:58it going? You just messed up the intro. No, you
- 1:00messed up the intro. Since you're one point fingers,
- 1:03there's three point back at you. Okay. I'm doing
- 1:06good, Cam. How are you doing? I am blessed and
- 1:09highly favored. All righty. Yes, ma 'am. What's
- 1:15been up in your world? Girl, you know, my wife
- 1:18has got me working like a Hebrew, and I'm just
- 1:23doing. Like, what are some of the things you're
- 1:26doing? Are you doing, like, things around the
- 1:28house? Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's all in
- 1:31her book promotion and social media and all of
- 1:36that. Oh, I got you. Yeah, I've just been really,
- 1:39really, really busy. Really busy. Really busy.
- 1:43Okay, so you know it's about to, we're coming
- 1:47up on Halloween. You know what? The day after
- 1:50Halloween, Christmas decorations. You are awful.
- 1:55Oh, you got a husband now. Oh, we're going to
- 1:58see what he's saying. And he going to put that
- 2:00Christmas tree up. No, he is not. He going to
- 2:03put his feet. I'm going to have to talk to him.
- 2:05Talk to him all you want to. I'm just really
- 2:07going to have to talk to him. You can talk to
- 2:08him, but he knows. We putting them Christmas
- 2:11decorations on. Oh, my God. That is. Awful. You
- 2:15have no shame. No. None. No shame. I'm already
- 2:20ready for that time of just holiday season. How
- 2:24many trees do you have? Well, let's see. One,
- 2:29two, three. Jesus. I usually put up like four
- 2:33or five. I think it's four. Wow. Yeah. Because,
- 2:38I mean. Because what? Because it's so, it's festive.
- 2:43But I don't put up like huge trees. I put the
- 2:47old, the little skinny six foot trees. I really
- 2:50like those. But do you decorate them? Yeah. Well,
- 2:53there ain't no difference. Well, I guess. So
- 2:57do you go out? Well, I kind of know the answer,
- 3:01but do you go all out? Like, I've seen some serious
- 3:04decorations, like the big bowls and the balloons
- 3:07or the big balls that go around. Have you seen
- 3:10that? Yeah, I saw that. Is that you? No. Okay,
- 3:14very good. Like, I love the season. I feel like
- 3:19I'm not the best decorator, but we're going to
- 3:22have some. We're going to do it. Yeah. Okay,
- 3:26here's a lifelong question. Uh -huh. Are you
- 3:30a multicolor light or a white light Christmas?
- 3:35I am a white light Christmas. Yes. I can't stand
- 3:40them multicolor bulbs. You know what? Don't hate
- 3:43on the multicolor bulbs. Because that is what
- 3:46I wanted my mom to decorate with when I was younger.
- 3:49Because, I mean, who doesn't want a colorful
- 3:52Christmas tree? You want a white Christmas. Well,
- 3:55now, no, it's not necessarily you want a white
- 3:58Christmas tree. It's you want a coordinated tree.
- 4:01Yeah, yeah. So to me, the colorful lights don't
- 4:06go with everything. Right. Exactly. They don't.
- 4:09White does. Dang, I'm agreeing with you. Yes.
- 4:13Hey, here's a big question. Yep. Are you going
- 4:17to have your husband getting out and putting
- 4:18them lights on the house? And if you do, are
- 4:22you going to have those year -long lights or
- 4:26just? I will not have him putting lights on the
- 4:30house because I don't think I have a big enough
- 4:35insurance claim just yet. Now, next year, I might.
- 4:40But, you know, there's companies that do that
- 4:43now. Oh, yeah, if you got the money. Yeah. I
- 4:46ain't got the money. Well. There's a company
- 4:50for everything you want to do. You know what?
- 4:53There is because I found this. We will clean
- 4:57your trash can company that I'm very close to
- 5:00using. That is so ridiculous. Why? Who wants
- 5:04to spend money to do what you can do in 10 minutes?
- 5:12I would because I don't want to do it myself.
- 5:15But you got a husband now. I want him doing it.
- 5:18Yes, you do. He probably doesn't want to do it.
- 5:20He probably doesn't, but we'll do it. I'm willing
- 5:24to pay for that. Yeah, I am. Just let me know.
- 5:29Oh, my goodness. Christmas, Christmas, Christmas,
- 5:33Lord have mercy. It's coming, so you need to
- 5:35get ready. Deck the halls. It's a little warm
- 5:40-up. Yeah, that's a warm -up, but you still ain't
- 5:43had that conversation, so I can't wait. till
- 5:47Christmas I will be spending Christmas in Lexington
- 5:49Cameron yes this will be like the first time
- 5:52ever and you're gonna be salty all Christmas
- 5:55day I'm not no I refuse to be salty you're gonna
- 5:59be salty no I'll just be on FaceTime with my
- 6:01family be like what y 'all doing how many gifts
- 6:04do you expect from your husband how many what
- 6:10you mean I mean it's just not quality quantity
- 6:14how many gifts should you you know what I maybe
- 6:19a few however I like experiences more than I
- 6:25like gifts so I'm not necessarily into like if
- 6:29he wants to buy me a gift cool I'm good I like
- 6:32giving him gifts but his gifts be they just be
- 6:39different they be different for me together like
- 6:47let's bake cookies and let's do that I'm good
- 6:51Yeah. Okay. Well, I refuse to go down this pathway
- 6:56with you. I refuse. I refuse. You know, Christmas
- 7:02tree is not going up until after Thanksgiving
- 7:04or Thanksgiving day or Thanksgiving day. Yeah.
- 7:08My mom usually does Thanksgiving day, but when
- 7:12Halloween hits, like I'm already like jingle
- 7:18bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way. You're
- 7:20doing too much, man. You're doing too much. I
- 7:23need you to calm down just a little bit. All
- 7:26right, Cam, whatever. Just a little bit. I mean,
- 7:29let it breathe. You know what I'm saying? I mean,
- 7:34they already got Christmas stuff in the stores.
- 7:36They do. Which is ridiculous. There's a lot of
- 7:39Christmas stuff in the stores. Yeah, yeah. Before
- 7:42Christmas end, they're going to have Valentine's
- 7:46Day stuff. that part do you feel like is there
- 7:52a do the you think the stores put out you know
- 7:57holiday stuff too early yeah don't yes they're
- 8:02getting they're getting you prepared they're
- 8:04getting you in that season no see You're looking
- 8:07at it as warm and huggy, but they're looking
- 8:11at money. I need to pimp them from as much money
- 8:14as I can get. So let's start earlier and earlier
- 8:17and earlier each year. Well, whatever. That's
- 8:21what's happening. And on that, I think since
- 8:25we've gone crazy, and it better not be about
- 8:27Christmas, let's get a Coffie Break. All right.
- 8:40So for the Coffie break today, I want to say
- 8:43the biggest adventure you can take is to live
- 8:46out your dreams. How about that? That's powerful.
- 8:51Are you living your dreams? And I think this
- 8:53is a time where you can say, you know what? Am
- 8:57I living my dreams? What will it take for me
- 9:00to get there? You know, it's important to dream.
- 9:05It is really important to dream. But it's even
- 9:07more important. You know what I've learned? That
- 9:11there's nothing stopping you except yourself.
- 9:15Nothing. You know? Yep. Even with all this stuff
- 9:19I was talking about with the book promotion.
- 9:20You know, you think of something and you're like,
- 9:23oh, yeah, we'll do that later. No, now. Right
- 9:25now. Yeah. Everything can be done right now.
- 9:29And it's crazy. So, yeah. Yeah, live that dream.
- 9:35Do that dream. It's important to keep dreaming
- 9:38because this life and this world will beat you
- 9:43down if you allow it. But if you got dreams,
- 9:46what's stopping you? Live out your dreams, not
- 9:49your nightmares. Say that part. Yeah, what's
- 9:53stopping you? Ain't nothing stopping you but
- 9:55you. Yep. So jump on it. I agree. That was good.
- 9:58That was good. Well. Well, today on the show.
- 10:04She done went in her shenanigans voice. Oh, I
- 10:09want to say so much on this mic. Today on the
- 10:12show, we have a Lexington lieutenant for the
- 10:17Lexington Fire Department. His name is Terrence
- 10:21Gatewood. Hello, Terrence. Welcome to the show.
- 10:28So Terrence is a dear friend of mine. And, you
- 10:32know, sometimes I question whether he's really
- 10:34professional. However, knowing that he is, I
- 10:38am happy that we will be talking today about
- 10:41home safety, home fire safety. All right. So
- 10:45let me preface this. For all of you all living
- 10:54in wherever you live in. Right. And there's a
- 10:57constant beep, beep, because your battery. On
- 11:04the smoke detector. On the smoke detector. Or
- 11:06the carbon. Needs to be replaced. That's what
- 11:10we talking about today. Terrence, what you think
- 11:12about these people who don't? That's a tragedy
- 11:15in the neighborhood right now. It's a complete
- 11:17catastrophe. I think we got to reach the children
- 11:21first, because if they can, two years old, they
- 11:23know what a juice box is. They can recognize
- 11:27what that beeping noise is because somebody got
- 11:29to tell their parents because they're not doing
- 11:30it. Somebody got to look up in the sky and be
- 11:34like, look here, what's that beeping? You probably
- 11:35just beeped right now. Yes. As you're listening
- 11:37to this, you probably just heard it beep. Right,
- 11:39right. But you didn't hear it, you ignored it.
- 11:41That's probably what just happened. I love it.
- 11:45So, again, we want to talk about fire safety.
- 11:50When it comes to home fire safety, what are some
- 11:54of the common things steps that that families
- 11:58miss that they miss uh -huh um besides the besides
- 12:04the smoke detector um obviously that's probably
- 12:08the biggest one um it's an early indication of
- 12:11fire in your home or at least smoke in your home
- 12:12that could lead to fire um the second biggest
- 12:15step that most people probably miss is having
- 12:17a safe place outside so that everyone can meet
- 12:20up yeah and uh gather and be safe when we arrive
- 12:24because most of the time they try to go back
- 12:26in and look for people which is a complete no
- 12:29-no big no -no don't do that get yourself outside
- 12:34because obviously if we get there we can't make
- 12:37the situation better if we're looking for you
- 12:39as opposed to somebody you were looking for so
- 12:42having to meet in a place outside is really crucial
- 12:45other than that make sure that your children
- 12:51know a pathway, a secondary method to getting
- 12:53out of the house, whether it be a window because
- 12:55a broken leg is easier to fix than having to
- 12:58put gold firmies together for people's T -shirts
- 13:01and stuff like that. So get outside the house
- 13:04the best way you can. I think that's extremely
- 13:06important. So this may be off topic, but looking
- 13:12at you, I just have to ask. So, you know, we
- 13:16were raised, or at least I'll speak for myself,
- 13:19I was raised with that. That view of the fireman
- 13:22coming to get the cat out the tree. Is that something
- 13:26you all do? In 23 years, I have never pulled
- 13:33a cat from a tree. No, no, no. I didn't ask if
- 13:36you pulled one. I said, is that something you
- 13:38all do? It could possibly very well be something
- 13:42that has been done before. But me personally,
- 13:45I have never done that. I'm sure that... The
- 13:50opportunity has risen somewhere, but it's never
- 13:53risen for me. It's never risen for you. No. I've
- 13:56done lots of different things, a whole lot of
- 13:59different types of animals and baby raccoons
- 14:02and ducks and stuff like that, but never a cat
- 14:05in a tree. Don't! Yeah, that's not something
- 14:07I aspire to do. I don't even like cats. Right,
- 14:10right. I'm a dog person, thank you. Shout out
- 14:13to Bruce. Bruce, Bruce. So... So let's talk about
- 14:20having a plan. So besides, you know, the get
- 14:26out, like what should families do? Should they
- 14:29practice? Should they write the plan out? Tell
- 14:31us like the very beginnings of, say I have a
- 14:35new family. We moved into a house, an apartment.
- 14:39How should I prepare my family? I think it's
- 14:41important to have everything written down. Anything
- 14:43that you want to have success at, you write it
- 14:45down. Actually writing it down and then enacting
- 14:48it, putting it into motion, practicing it always
- 14:51makes it better, especially with young children.
- 14:54They learn by doing. So having a place outside
- 14:57where you set up and actually have your family
- 14:59meet is key. And practicing and forcing it is
- 15:03also very key in that. Gotcha. Well, that is
- 15:09going to get us to our break. We are talking
- 15:12with Terrence Gatewood, and you are listening
- 15:15to... Look who's talking. This past year has
- 15:31highlighted the strength of Community Action
- 15:33Council. Every day, our staff works together
- 15:35to help families recover from this crisis. We're
- 15:39educating children at home and in person, helping
- 15:42parents who lost their jobs, and helping households
- 15:44avoid eviction. Our work at Community Action
- 15:47Council has never been more important than it
- 15:49is right now. So why not join us? We have employment
- 15:52opportunities requiring a range of skills from
- 15:55entry level to advanced. Apply online at commaction
- 15:59.org. You are listening to Look Who's Talking,
- 16:28and we are here with... Terrence Gatewood with
- 16:32the Lexington Fire Department, who is a lieutenant.
- 16:35Thank you. And what we want to... Respect on
- 16:40my name. What I want to talk about is... Okay,
- 16:49I remember when I was in school and they told
- 16:52me to stop, drop, and roll. Let's talk about
- 16:56stop, drop, and roll. How can a parent teach
- 16:59their kid how to just the proper things to do
- 17:04when, say, if the child notices a fire, how should
- 17:09a parent teach their kids? And what should a
- 17:12parent teach their kids? It's a physical thing.
- 17:15I've given the example that sometimes when kids
- 17:18are around, like. Certain things like fireworks,
- 17:20campfires, they don't even know that, say, their
- 17:23shorts have caught on fire. So the biggest thing
- 17:25you can do is to teach your child to stop, drop,
- 17:27and roll is tickle them. It gives them the impression
- 17:30of getting on the ground, rolling around. And
- 17:32if you're saying something like tickle yourself,
- 17:35they'll mimic that operation. So they'll be on
- 17:38the ground rolling around and stuff. You know,
- 17:40you can actually go up and tickle your child
- 17:41yourself. And it teaches them at a very young
- 17:44age, that's essentially what we want you to do
- 17:46because it smothers a fire. It reduces all the
- 17:49oxygen inside of a fire so it goes out. So you
- 17:54all also do more than just fire, is that correct?
- 18:01We do everything. I understand that you all have
- 18:05multiple training. Yes, hazmat rescue, air rescue,
- 18:11water rescue, swift water rescue, large animal
- 18:14rescue. We do EMS. We're paramedics. We do paramedicine.
- 18:21We have outreach programs for paramedicine for
- 18:23repeat subjects or repeat callers. We're accredited.
- 18:29We teach ourselves. Everything that we learn
- 18:30is actually learned at our training academy.
- 18:33So we actually get college credit for that as
- 18:36well. So it's not just fighting fire, is it?
- 18:39No, no, no. If you're looking like as far as
- 18:42a landscape of fire, like we are. literally top
- 18:451 % across the country. We're very aggressive.
- 18:49We do a lot of things on our own. Until it happens,
- 18:57you don't even think, who would you really call?
- 18:59I remember the girl in Louisville on the bridge
- 19:03when her truck went over. Who do you call? You
- 19:10call the cops, but you got to call the fire department,
- 19:13right? Absolutely. It's something that we train
- 19:15on. We train a lot on just those types of scenarios,
- 19:19whether it be hanging off a big blue building
- 19:21or hanging off a crane in the middle of nowhere.
- 19:24It doesn't matter. They're very eager to do those
- 19:27types of things. And I say they because I'm not
- 19:30one of those guys. I don't trust ropes. I will.
- 19:35No doubt. You also put car seats in. Oh, yeah.
- 19:38That's what it was. That's what it was. It's
- 19:41his favorite thing to do, right? I mean, yeah,
- 19:44sure, we do it. Cam, did I tell you? But there
- 19:47are qualifications you have to have. Really?
- 19:50Yeah. So everybody can't do it. We have people
- 19:53that are trained to do it. But, you know, we
- 19:57try and help the community the best we can. Cam,
- 19:59I bought a car seat for my bonus baby. Uh -huh.
- 20:02I pulled up to his department because I didn't
- 20:04know how to put that in. Of course. Who does?
- 20:07I don't know. I mean, correctly. You know what
- 20:12I'm saying? I can put it in and it'd be wobbling.
- 20:14I'd be like, that don't look right. You turn
- 20:18the corner, the kid's sliding. That has happened
- 20:22before. Right. Yes, it has. I went right to the
- 20:24fire department. It's not a good look. Yeah,
- 20:26it's not. It's not a good look. Yeah. So I know
- 20:30that you all have. Can I say programming for
- 20:35schools and possibly kiddos to learn? What's
- 20:39some of the programming that you teach children,
- 20:42but also how could, say, a school get in contact
- 20:47with you, or who would they contact? As far as
- 20:49programming, we do mostly our community service
- 20:52department actually does the reach out for things
- 20:56like this and other programs where we actually
- 20:59go to schools and actually teach children about.
- 21:02Fire safety and things like that. But as far
- 21:05as schools themselves, I believe there's a program
- 21:07at the new, I forget what the Herald Leader's
- 21:10called now, but that academy down there. They've
- 21:13had programs at Southside before, and now they've
- 21:17just relocated those there, and they're actually
- 21:20taught by retired firefighters who actually teach
- 21:23the programs and actually get kids interested
- 21:25in going into a career in fire. Gotcha. So, you
- 21:29know, here at Head Start, we service kiddos zero
- 21:33to five and pregnant moms. What what about fire
- 21:37safety is age appropriate for that? Let's say
- 21:42the three to five age range. Three to five. I
- 21:46mean, again, children are adaptable to learning
- 21:48things, you know, by action, by doing the kids
- 21:52that I've experienced and with my own children
- 21:55as well. It's just. doing things with them you
- 21:58know if you teach a child how to get out of the
- 22:00house they're gonna practice it just because
- 22:03it's fun and it's fun to do and they get to run
- 22:04in and out of the house yeah you know so it's
- 22:06repetitive motion so a lot of people equate tv
- 22:11shows to what fire is like chicago fire i've
- 22:14had numerous questions like if that's that's
- 22:16what fire is like actually like no it's not like
- 22:19that at all it's completely different 100 cannot
- 22:22see you cannot breathe if you breathe I've always
- 22:27told people, imagine you're asleep in your bed,
- 22:30shut your eyes and hold your breath and get to
- 22:32your front door. That's what it's like. Take
- 22:35a breath, you're probably not going to make it.
- 22:37So imagine that, plus you have children in your
- 22:39house. Now you have to hold your breath that
- 22:42much longer, get your children, make sure they
- 22:43don't breathe, and then make it to your front
- 22:45door. It makes it dramatically harder. So having
- 22:48a plan where everybody understands what they
- 22:50need to do when they get up in the middle of
- 22:52the night, if the detector's going off. I mean,
- 22:57we know who we're talking about. Right, right.
- 22:59That's a certain demographic of people. My people.
- 23:02But either way, I'm just saying, change your
- 23:04batteries, get the early response, get out of
- 23:07the house. That's a good plan. Here's another
- 23:09thing, because you all just don't do fire. Like,
- 23:13there's certain things that you don't know until
- 23:16you find out the hard way. I will never forget
- 23:20the moment that I began. cleaning something I
- 23:23was mixing these and had the worst you know what
- 23:27I'm saying in those situations it's I mean you
- 23:32learn hard sometimes definitely growing up in
- 23:36one of our typical type of households your parents
- 23:42probably like everyone else is like things clean
- 23:45So they just throwing stuff in the bathtub. You
- 23:47know, you got Ajax in there that's been sitting
- 23:49there probably about 30 minutes seasoning. Right.
- 23:52Seasoning the tub. And then she comes in and
- 23:54dumps some bleach on top of it. You in there,
- 23:56you don't know why you lightheaded, but you are.
- 23:58Right. You can't breathe good, you know, and
- 24:00you didn't realize that she just made it a toxic
- 24:02gas. You know, it's a lethal toxic gas with no
- 24:06oxygen exposure to the room. Luckily, we lived.
- 24:11But nowadays, those things, I've watched them
- 24:14kill people. Even the fan is not quite enough
- 24:18to remove the... It's a heavy toxic glass, so
- 24:22it actually sits close to the floor. And as you're
- 24:25scrubbing the tub, you wonder why you just woke
- 24:28up with somebody standing over you and you leaned
- 24:30in the bathtub and got HX all over your shirt.
- 24:33It's not a good look. I've been there, done that.
- 24:36I've been doing this a long time. I've seen it.
- 24:38A couple times. Well, I'm going to give you a
- 24:41scenario. My grandmother, bless her heart, love
- 24:43her. She was painting the floor registers. You
- 24:48know, we had floor registers and she wanted it
- 24:50to match the walls. And she was painting that
- 24:52and she forgot that the thing was not covered
- 24:58and stepped into it. One of the most embarrassing
- 25:01moments of my life is having to call the fire
- 25:04department because my grandmother stepped in
- 25:08the heat. The heat comes up in the room. Well,
- 25:12she took off the register and wanted to paint
- 25:15it. Yeah, the vent. To paint the face of it so
- 25:18it matched the walls. Well, she fell through
- 25:21and we're downstairs. She didn't fall through,
- 25:24but her leg fell through. And we're looking up
- 25:28and all we see is this leg, stocking, pantyhose
- 25:33all ripped up. And we couldn't get her up and
- 25:36had to call the fire department. most embarrassing
- 25:39moment in my life. I mean, people don't usually
- 25:43call us on their greatest days. Yeah. How about
- 25:46that? Even, you know, they're probably their
- 25:48worst day or their most embarrassing. I've seen
- 25:52a lot of embarrassing days for people. So, I
- 25:55mean, it's part of the job. It's the reason why
- 25:57we have a job. How often would you tell parents,
- 26:01hey, practice this with your child? I'd say,
- 26:04I mean, Again, muscle memory being a big tool
- 26:07with children that age, you can practice it a
- 26:11couple of times a year. Just, you know, have
- 26:14a whistle in your house and just blow the whistle
- 26:16and see what happens. You know, it's just a drill.
- 26:20It's like any other drill you do at school. I
- 26:22mean, who told you to stop at a red light and
- 26:25to go with a green one? I mean, you realize that
- 26:28certain things mean certain things. So if you
- 26:30hear a ding going off in your house from a smoke
- 26:33detector. It should be muscle memory that it's
- 26:35time to get out. Gotcha. And so most people can
- 26:37actually fake that because, again, theirs probably
- 26:40just went off right now and they didn't realize
- 26:41it went off because they didn't change the battery.
- 26:44Do they still do drills in school? Absolutely.
- 26:49At least in Head Start, we do drills monthly.
- 26:53So we do fire, we do tornado and earthquake monthly.
- 26:59And then we do bus drills quarterly. Okay, I
- 27:03guess I haven't seen the, you know, head down,
- 27:08you know, under the table type thing or whatever.
- 27:11I don't know if we do those things, like the
- 27:13tornado where they told you to get under your
- 27:15desk. I'm like, that wasn't going to save you
- 27:16anyway, but it made you feel better, I guess.
- 27:18It did make you feel better. But yeah, we incorporate,
- 27:22this is part of the safety we incorporate in
- 27:26Head Start. Get the children to that point where,
- 27:30hey, if you're practicing at school, maybe your
- 27:33child will mention it at home and then you'll
- 27:35get a routine going. I practice this with my
- 27:39bonus child. So I was like, OK, if there's a
- 27:43fire, what do you do? She said, run out the door.
- 27:46I said, well, run out the door. I'm following
- 27:47you. So she ran out the door. I said, what's
- 27:50next? And she said, we call 991. And I said,
- 27:55that is not the number, but close. So then I
- 27:59practiced it again and she got the number right.
- 28:01So I think there is definitely a benefit in making
- 28:05sure that you practice with your kiddos, but
- 28:09also know the route yourself because when something
- 28:12comes up, you can practice all day long, but
- 28:15if there's a fire, you're going to panic. What
- 28:19do you think? I think that's 100 % true. I mean,
- 28:21we've had children that wind up in the backyard,
- 28:25you know, when they're supposed to be out front
- 28:26by a tree and parents can't find them. So then
- 28:29we go from, you know, fire suppression to search.
- 28:33You know, search takes precedent over everything
- 28:35else. So it completely changes the way that we
- 28:40fight a fire if we know that there's somebody
- 28:42in the house. Because we can't be as aggressive
- 28:44as we want to be. Putting a fire out will actually...
- 28:47cause it to spread sometimes and actually may
- 28:50harm somebody who has stumbled into the kitchen
- 28:52or is now trapped in the backyard that's fenced
- 28:54in. So finding the person actually elevates the
- 28:59situation for us. Gotcha. Yeah. So being a paramedic
- 29:04as well is essential. I don't usually put those
- 29:10two together, but I think I've seen even more.
- 29:16ambulances in red than I have before in my life.
- 29:21Yeah, everybody on our job is an EMT. Some are
- 29:25paramedics, but you always have an EMT on any
- 29:30fire truck. So that was one thing that makes
- 29:33us different from pretty much everybody else.
- 29:37So the addition of more EMTs and more EMS units
- 29:42and more ambulances or buggies as we call them.
- 29:45We just added a couple more and probably need
- 29:48to add a few more to that because Lexington is
- 29:51not shrinking at all. It's growing out of control.
- 29:54So you said different than everybody. Is this
- 29:59something that is practiced here but not practiced
- 30:02nationwide? There are some departments that actually
- 30:05have EMT and fire together. Most have it separate.
- 30:09I believe Louisville has it separate. They have
- 30:12their own. ambulance services, and then firefighters
- 30:16or EMTs as well. With us, you can take someone
- 30:21from an ambulance and put them directly on a
- 30:23fire truck and they know exactly which job and
- 30:25every position to do so they can do every single
- 30:28thing you can do on an ambulance, on a fire truck,
- 30:31or on any other unit because we train that way.
- 30:34That's impressive. I love it. I love it. Man,
- 30:37I didn't even get to talk about frying turkeys
- 30:39in the garage. No, don't do it. Don't do it.
- 30:43Don't do it. Just don't. Man, help me help you.
- 30:47Right, right, right. Well, we have gotten through
- 30:50the 4th of July. And I'm assuming, like, maybe
- 30:54Thanksgiving turkey is a big time. Or the heaters
- 30:59in the house. It's the heaters. This is what
- 31:02we call our busy season. You got... People that
- 31:06are first -time fryers, first -time homeowners
- 31:09cutting their heat on for the first time and
- 31:10smelling the dust that gets on the coils and
- 31:13heating up, and they think, oh, well, the smoke
- 31:15in the house is on fire. Take a second, see if
- 31:19you actually see smoke. You can smell dust burning
- 31:22off of a heating coil or a motor inside of a
- 31:26furnace, but just take a second, take a deep
- 31:28breath. Don't fry your turkeys in the house,
- 31:30please, or on the garage. Please take it far
- 31:34away. It's never going to work out good. It's
- 31:37not a good thing. Terrence, we appreciate you
- 31:41being on the show. Thank you so much. This information
- 31:44should be helpful to our families. Should be.
- 31:48Yes. What we're going to do, we're going to change
- 31:51the battery in the smoke detector. Happy Fire
- 31:56Prevention Month. All right. Let's acknowledge
- 31:59that. All right. You have been listening to Look
- 32:03Who's Talking.
