- 0:01What question is being asked? There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #12109 to upgrade your
- 0:09middle game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:14yourself. This message is dedicated to
- 0:16Harry Sampa. If you haven't followed or
- 0:19subscribed or whatever way your podcast player gives you to
- 0:21connect, please do. It's an easy way to help others
- 0:24find these messages. Here's the upgrade.
- 0:27You may be waiting for life to tell you what it means, but
- 0:30upgraded thinking understands life is the one asking the
- 0:32questions and you answer with how you show up.
- 0:35Here's the story. What is the meaning of life?
- 0:40People have asked that for as long as there been people.
- 0:43Viktor Frankel turned the question around, though in the
- 0:45concentration camps he watched men give up when they stopped
- 0:48expecting anything from life. He wrote quote.
- 0:51It did not matter what we expected from life, but rather
- 0:55what life expected from us. In quote, stop asking life what
- 0:59it means and start answering what life is asking of you.
- 1:03And Frankel said how quote, our answer must consist not in talk
- 1:08and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct.
- 1:12In quote, meaning is a buried treasure.
- 1:16You don't dig it up, you answer it.
- 1:19So how does life ask for me? It asks through my roles as a
- 1:24husband, father. Every role places a demand on
- 1:28me. Every day.
- 1:29That demand is the question. Here's how I try to answer it.
- 1:33Energy first. If I'm depleted, I'm a worse
- 1:36husband and a worse dad. So sleep training and meditation
- 1:39aren't selfish. They're service number 2.
- 1:44I try to outperform the contract.
- 1:46What does that mean? Every close relationship has an
- 1:49invisible agreement. What my wife and kids have every
- 1:53right to expect from me. Most of us live at the bare
- 1:57minimum of that contract. Relationships rarely break from
- 2:00one big betrayal. They wear down from a pile of
- 2:04mediocrity. So I asked, what is one thing I
- 2:08can do today that goes beyond what's expected and #3 be
- 2:13present in the role I'm playing? Epictetus said.
- 2:16To play the role you've been given and play it well.
- 2:19Do you know the roles you've been given?
- 2:21You can't play the past you or future you.
- 2:26You can only be present in the part You have to play in the
- 2:28present. The present is the stage you're
- 2:31on right now. There's an old story of three
- 2:35men cutting stone. Someone asks what they're doing.
- 2:38The first says I'm cutting stone.
- 2:40The second says I'm building a wall.
- 2:43The third says I'm building a cathedral.
- 2:46Same work, same tool, same aching back, completely
- 2:49different meaning. Your roles are the cathedral,
- 2:52the extra 5 minutes, the specific question, the phone set
- 2:56down. Those are the stones.
- 2:59Most days they feel ordinary, but nobody else can lay them.
- 3:04No one else can play your part in your family, in your
- 3:08community, at your place of work.
- 3:12That's where the meaning is. Only you can play the part
- 3:16you've been given. The better story to tell
- 3:18yourself is life is asking the questions and how I answer is
- 3:22totally up to me. Tell me a story of outperforming
- 3:26the contract to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:29Send someone a text and ask them how are you answering the
- 3:32question life is asking you right now?
