- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We think there's got to be strings attached, so there's got
- 0:39to be something else other than disgrace.
- 0:43And then when God's grace begins to apprehend our heart, we begin
- 0:47to experience God in a way that humanly can't be comprehended
- 0:53apart from grace. Grace is what gives you the
- 0:57ability to forgive and forget. Grace is the ability for you to
- 1:03receive forgiveness and accept the fact that Jesus did forgive
- 1:08you of all your sins. The word grace comes from the
- 1:12Greek word charis, which means unmerited favor and the divine
- 1:16influence upon the heart as reflected in life.
- 1:20Today. Pastor Clark will share many
- 1:22examples of what grace is and what it looks like in the life
- 1:26of a follower of Jesus. As you listen today, maybe ask
- 1:30yourself, does the grace of Jesus mark my life?
- 1:33And if the answer is no, then you'll want to listen to the end
- 1:36of today's broadcast as Pastor Clark shares more.
- 1:40When the grace of God marks your life, that same grace begins to
- 1:44spill out into the lives of those around you.
- 1:47You will begin to overflow. Now here's Pastor Clark in Acts
- 1:52Chapter 11 with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:57Acts Chapter 11 and we're reading about the the issue here
- 2:01of Peter who had thus given the gospel to Cornelius a Gentile in
- 2:07Acts chapter 10. And now Peter's heading up back
- 2:12to Jerusalem and we'll see what he has to deal with here.
- 2:15So it says in verse one. Now the apostles and brethren
- 2:19who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the
- 2:24word of God. So these guys in Jerusalem are
- 2:29legalists, they're Christians, but they're under the bondage of
- 2:32religion. They believe that in order to be
- 2:35a real Christian, you had to be become a Jew and you had to be
- 2:40circumcised, and you had to follow the traditions and the
- 2:43laws of Moses in order to be a real believer.
- 2:46They had prejudice against Gentiles, Jewish people and
- 2:50Gentiles didn't get along back in those days.
- 2:53In some cases today there's still issues between these two
- 2:57races. But nonetheless, it was all
- 2:59based upon this idea that this is the way you do worship, this
- 3:05is the way you do faith, this is the way you follow Jesus.
- 3:09And the problem in in the world of Christianity Today is that
- 3:13you have all these different denominations with everybody
- 3:16sort of having a preference of how things should be done.
- 3:21And we need to have our hearts open to the fact that the Lord
- 3:24works in many, many different churches in different ways with
- 3:29the same gospel. If a church is a Bible church,
- 3:33and it's a church that believes in the Trinity and the virgin
- 3:38birth and the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ,
- 3:41and the Bible being the inherent word of God, that's the
- 3:45foundation. Everything else is up to
- 3:48negotiation. Whether someone uses guitars or
- 3:50drums or candles or incense, those things are really
- 3:54secondary, aren't they? But many times people get
- 3:57uptight about different things and how people do things.
- 4:00So the Jewish people here at this time were very, very
- 4:04struggling in regard to Peter because he had spent time in the
- 4:08House of Cornelius, Peter being Jewish, Cornelius being a
- 4:12Gentile. So when Peter came up to
- 4:14Jerusalem, those are the circumcision contended with him
- 4:18saying you went into uncircumcised men and ate with
- 4:22them. I mean, that's a big deal.
- 4:23Back in those days. You do something like that.
- 4:27You are going against all your core beliefs that you've ever
- 4:30had as a Jewish person. And as a result, they had this
- 4:35struggle and they had this difficulty.
- 4:38And so Peter explained it to them in order from the
- 4:41beginning, saying, I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a
- 4:47trance I saw a vision and object descending like a great sheep
- 4:52let down from heaven by four corners.
- 4:55And it came to me. And when I observed it intently
- 4:58and considered, I saw 4 footed animals of the earth, wild
- 5:01beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air.
- 5:05And I heard a voice saying to me, Rise, Peter, kill and eat.
- 5:08But I said, not so Lord, for nothing common or unclean has at
- 5:13any time entered my mouth. But the voice answered me again
- 5:18from heaven. What God has cleansed you must
- 5:22not call common. Now this was done three times,
- 5:26and all were drawn up again into heaven.
- 5:29And so we see this, this vision that Peter had, and he grew up
- 5:35as a Jew. He grew up with all these
- 5:36traditions and he was used to doing things a certain way.
- 5:41And God is preparing him now to take the gospel to Gentile
- 5:44people, to be with people that he would normally not want to be
- 5:48around, that he would consider unclean.
- 5:51And so God gave him this vision and, and Peter had to have
- 5:54everything like 3 times. If you remember, the Lord told
- 5:57him he was going to deny him three times, right?
- 6:00And then after Peter's denial and he got right with God again,
- 6:04the Lord asked him a question three times.
- 6:07Do you love me, Peter? Sort of hard headed, right?
- 6:09Thick skin or whatever you want to call it.
- 6:11He just was a different kind of individual.
- 6:14And the Lord had to make sure he understood this vision.
- 6:17That's not one time, but three times.
- 6:19So I think we're all a lot like that.
- 6:21We need to hear things more than one time, especially when
- 6:24they're from the Bible, because it takes a while for things to
- 6:27to settle in and for us to consider what it is that the
- 6:30Holy Spirit wants us to understand when we're hearing
- 6:34the words, when we're reading the word, when we're being
- 6:36taught the word. And so in this specific vision,
- 6:41all these UN kosher animals are in this blanket and he's given
- 6:45the permission by God that he can now eat these things that he
- 6:50was at one time told it would be a terrible sin, an abomination
- 6:54actually to eat these kind of things as a Jewish person and
- 7:00even challenges the the Lord in regard to this one.
- 7:03In verse 7, when the Lord says rise, Peter kill and eat, he
- 7:07said, not so Lord, for nothing common or unclean has at any
- 7:11time entered my mouth. But then the Lord from heaven
- 7:15speaks what God has cleansed you must not call common.
- 7:20So about the third time this happened, Peter began to be more
- 7:23open to something. Perhaps he didn't quite
- 7:26understand yet. Now you got to understand in in
- 7:29the Christian life and and learning about the Lord, Not
- 7:32everything dawns on us all the sudden, right?
- 7:34We don't grasp everything clearly.
- 7:36Many times it takes a while to really understand what the
- 7:40Bible's saying in certain areas. Some things are more difficult
- 7:43to understand. And a big issue in Christianity
- 7:46is it's a, it's a faith and I'm going to call it a religion.
- 7:50It's a movement of God's spirit, supernatural that is based upon
- 7:54grace, right, based upon grace. And we're not really able to
- 8:01understand grace or receive grace the way God intends us to
- 8:06experience grace. Grace is liberating.
- 8:10Grace is freeing. Grace is transformative.
- 8:14Paul was an apostle of grace. Everything he taught is about
- 8:21the grace of God. That none of us deserve
- 8:24anything. None of us have the capacity to
- 8:26earn anything. Grace is a gift.
- 8:30And when we first hear about grace, it's almost too good to
- 8:34be true. We think there's got to be
- 8:37strings attached or there's got to be something else other than
- 8:40disgrace. And then when God's grace begins
- 8:44to apprehend our heart, we begin to experience God in a way that
- 8:51humanly can't be comprehended apart from grace.
- 8:55Grace is what gives you the ability to forgive and forget.
- 8:59Grace is the ability for you to receive forgiveness and accept
- 9:05the fact that Jesus did forgive you of all your sins.
- 9:11Grace is the ability to give other people some latitude
- 9:16without being critical or judgmental.
- 9:20Grace is to be able to forgive a Pagan or pray for people who
- 9:26don't know Christ. Grace is to be able to live in a
- 9:31country that is so divided that all you want to do is think
- 9:36about ways that you can tell people about Jesus.
- 9:39Because that's the only answer to the unbelieving, Pagan,
- 9:44immoral mindset, the grace of God.
- 9:49We can't respond or behave or act any differently as a fallen
- 9:54people apart from the grace of God changing our hearts and
- 9:59making us like Jesus. And so Peter is now about ready
- 10:05to understand grace in a way that he's never experienced
- 10:09before. And so as he finishes this
- 10:12vision, he's done with this vision.
- 10:16It says in verse 11, soon as this vision is done in the in
- 10:21the, the cloth in the blanket goes back up into heaven.
- 10:26At that very moment, three men stood before the house where I
- 10:30was, where he was having been sent to me from Caesarea.
- 10:35Three men stood there. He just heard three times God's
- 10:41truth regarding grace and three persons represents the Trinity.
- 10:48It's interesting how numbers are so significant in the Bible.
- 10:52The three, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
- 10:54One, God manifests in three persons.
- 10:57So there's three men standing at the house.
- 10:59These men were sent from Caesarea.
- 11:03These are Gentiles now up until this point, before the vision,
- 11:09if they would have been at the door, he might have said, well,
- 11:12nice meeting you. There's a bed and breakfast down
- 11:15the road. You can go there.
- 11:17I'll catch up with you later outside.
- 11:20You would never invite a Gentile into your house.
- 11:24That's how dark the discrimination and prejudice
- 11:28was. So in verse 12 it says then the
- 11:31Spirit told me to go with them, dotting nothing, doubting
- 11:37nothing. He listened to the Holy Spirit
- 11:39and he knew completely that this was what God had ordained him to
- 11:46do, to meet these three guys and to go with him.
- 11:48He was told this in the vision back in chapter 10.
- 11:52We know not only did he go with them, but he invited him into
- 11:54the house and he, he took care of them for a while and fed them
- 11:58and, and all this bondage of prejudice was completely
- 12:01destroyed and broken down, wasn't existing anymore.
- 12:05Moreover, these six brethren accompanied me and we entered
- 12:10the man's house. Now Peter didn't go into as much
- 12:13details of what happened in chapter 10 because you got to
- 12:16realize he's talking to legalists.
- 12:18He's very careful in keeping the main focus of the message very
- 12:24clear and simple to accept. He didn't get into the thing
- 12:28that God said to Cornelius was an honorable man.
- 12:32He he gave offerings or whatever.
- 12:34He didn't set it up to justify anything and the and the Gentile
- 12:40mindset that would be unacceptable to a Jewish
- 12:43authority or Jewish spiritual leader at the time.
- 12:47So Peter was wise enough when he went, he didn't go himself.
- 12:51He needed some witnesses because he has to now give an account
- 12:55before the leaders in Jerusalem, what he did, why he was there,
- 12:59what went on, what actually happened.
- 13:02And these six brethren with him were witnesses.
- 13:04So we enter the man's house, verse 13, And he told us how he
- 13:09had seen an Angel standing in his house, who said to him, send
- 13:12men to Joppa. This is where Peter was living
- 13:15with Simon the Tanner at the time, and call for Simon.
- 13:18His surname is Peter. Who will tell you words by which
- 13:22you and all your household will be saved.
- 13:26And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, is
- 13:31upon us at the beginning that the irony of this whole
- 13:33situation is that Peter is a apostle.
- 13:38He's a preacher, He's gifted. And I'm sure he had a big plan
- 13:43in this message. He might have had three points,
- 13:46five points, 6 points. He was just getting started.
- 13:49And the Holy Spirit fell down and said, Peter, you don't need
- 13:52to say anything else. I'm going to save these people
- 13:55supernaturally. And the Holy Spirit fell and
- 13:59they believed and they got saved.
- 14:02And I love this because Peter didn't say, Lord, I'm not done
- 14:04with my message yet. Peter's learning to trust God
- 14:08more obviously and depend on him more.
- 14:12And so the Holy Spirit falls on these people, and he says to
- 14:17these authorities in Jerusalem, what we saw, what we
- 14:21experienced, me and the six witnesses and all the people in
- 14:23the house, the same thing that happened to us back in Acts
- 14:27chapter 1 and 2, when the Holy Spirit fell in the upper room.
- 14:32And 120 people had experienced this phenomena of the baptism of
- 14:37the Holy Spirit and had the evidence of that specific time
- 14:41of tongues. And there was other times in
- 14:43Acts where the Spirit fell that tongues weren't manifest, but
- 14:47nonetheless they're a legitimate gift.
- 14:49And they were manifest in the beginning of Pentecost and in
- 14:52this case, and it was so important that they would
- 14:55experience salvation the same way the Jews did as Gentiles.
- 15:00So the Jewish people wouldn't be able to say, well, this isn't
- 15:03legitimate, they didn't have this experience or whatever.
- 15:07And so I remembered the the word of the Lord, how he said, John
- 15:11indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the
- 15:16Holy Spirit. If therefore God gave them the
- 15:19same gift as he gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus
- 15:23Christ, who is I that I could withstand God.
- 15:26So he he throws it back on them and just ask the question.
- 15:30He's humble when he's sharing this with these people, these
- 15:34leaders, and he's not pushy. He's just stating the facts.
- 15:38When they heard these things, they became silent.
- 15:42And that's a miracle in and of itself for these Jewish leaders
- 15:46to not come back with some kind of altercation or defense that
- 15:50this isn't legitimate. It says when they heard these
- 15:54things, they became silent and they glorified God, saying then
- 15:58God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.
- 16:04Isn't it wonderful that there is no discrimination from God our
- 16:09Creator? That all men are created equal?
- 16:13No one is better than anyone else.
- 16:17No race is better than anyone else.
- 16:19No country is better than anyone else.
- 16:22We're all level at the foot of the cross, aren't we all have
- 16:26sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
- 16:28There's none that doeth good. No, not one.
- 16:30The Bible says that's the whole human race to God in his mercy
- 16:34through the gospel chooses to save people and continually
- 16:38saves people over and over and over again through the simple
- 16:42preaching of the word. And what excites me whenever I
- 16:46read this, I think about even today as a pastor, I'm here
- 16:50endeavoring to want to do the best I can to to feed you guys
- 16:53and give you what the scriptures are saying.
- 16:55But I'm not stupid enough or foolish enough to think that God
- 16:59cannot circumvent what it is I'm saying and speak to you
- 17:02individually while you're sitting here and you're hearing
- 17:05something from God that has to do with your life and where
- 17:08you're at and what's happening with you that I didn't even say
- 17:12or talk about today. Somehow God does meets you here
- 17:16in your seat as you're hearing His word.
- 17:19He talks to you about things that He wants you to know about,
- 17:22things he wants you to consider or reflect upon.
- 17:26And so Peter sort of like moving off the map here is the focus,
- 17:30focus in the 1st 11 chapters of Acts.
- 17:33Now the focus is going to shift more to the Paul.
- 17:36We'll see Peter again in chapter 12 here.
- 17:38But now Barnabas, he is now on the scene.
- 17:42You remember Barnabas, he's the guy that gave the property to
- 17:46the early church in the beginning.
- 17:49He donated property and Anas, Anais and Sapphira was sort of
- 17:53jealous of what he did and they wanted to be recognized like
- 17:56Barnabas. So they they lied and they said
- 17:58they were given whatever to God that they didn't give and ended
- 18:00up dying and getting dragged out of the church.
- 18:03The Lord just dealt with her. They're lying and quite sobering
- 18:07experience in those early days. Barnabas was a, a man of great
- 18:12comfort and he was an encourager.
- 18:15And this is just the way he always was.
- 18:17Matter of fact, whenever Paul, Saul got converted on the on the
- 18:21road there to Damascus and, and everybody's afraid because Paul
- 18:26was a persecutor of Saul was a persecutor of Christians before
- 18:29he was called Saul. Barnabas was able to meet with
- 18:34Saul and see that his conversion was legitimate, that what
- 18:39happened to him was a miracle, and that he really got saved.
- 18:43And then he was able to go up with Barnabas to Jerusalem later
- 18:47to meet the religious leaders at the time, the Judaizers, and
- 18:54tell them, hey, don't be afraid of Saul.
- 18:57He's one of us now. He's our brother.
- 19:00And so Saul also is aware of the fact that whenever Saul was
- 19:04called into the ministry that the Lord told him he would take
- 19:09the gospel to the Gentiles. The Jewish member of the
- 19:12Sanhedrin, a Pharisee now born again, becomes an apostle
- 19:17because he's an eyewitness of Christ on that road.
- 19:21And he goes up after his meeting in Jerusalem and they sent him
- 19:26to Tarsus for they figure, 8 to 12 years.
- 19:30So he's up there by himself, not with anybody else, studying,
- 19:35learning. He didn't go into the ministry
- 19:37the next day after he got saved. He was used the next day after
- 19:40he got saved. He did speak in the synagogues,
- 19:42but there was a lot for him to learn and hear from the Lord.
- 19:45Eventually he wrote most of the New Testament.
- 19:48So Barnabas in his mind, they're sending him.
- 19:52We'll continue to read here. Now verse 19.
- 19:54Now those who were scattered after the persecution that arose
- 19:58over Stephen, you remember Stephen was martyred few
- 20:01chapters back. The first martyr, Christian
- 20:04martyr in the, in the New Testament, these people then
- 20:07were persecuted and they traveled as far as Phoenicia,
- 20:10Cyprus and Antioch. So they're, they're spread out
- 20:13and they're preaching the word to no one but the Jews only.
- 20:18So initially these people that are in in Jerusalem are, are
- 20:21being spread out because of the persecution, but their focus
- 20:24again is just Jewish people. But some of them were men from
- 20:28Cyprus and Cyrene who when they had come to Antioch spoke to the
- 20:32Hellenists. You remember the Hellenists were
- 20:34the Greek cultural Jewish people preaching the Lord Jesus and and
- 20:39the hand of the Lord was with them and a great number believed
- 20:42in and turned to the Lord. Now now recognize in this
- 20:46section of Scripture here that these were people like you and
- 20:49me. They weren't, I'm not an
- 20:51apostle. You aren't either.
- 20:52You know, we're, we're just like normal believers.
- 20:55We all have different spiritual gifts, but we're just like
- 20:56normal everyday people, right? These people were normal
- 21:00everyday people that were pressed out because of the
- 21:02persecution and they were out there telling other people about
- 21:07what Jesus did for them and as a result of their communication in
- 21:11their marketplace and their neighborhoods where they live,
- 21:15that kind of stuff, A great number of people believed and
- 21:17turned to the Lord. None of them said, well, we got
- 21:20to wait till the apostles come up or wait till Peter comes up
- 21:22or Barnabas or Saul or James or whatever.
- 21:25No, like it was so infectious the the work of God's Spirit and
- 21:30the lives of people like you and me, which it should be that way
- 21:33still, right? That's why we're studying Acts
- 21:35to get revived, to learn more about how we can be used by the
- 21:39Lord in these kind of situations, right?
- 21:42That they had an impact and all these people believed and turned
- 21:46to the Lord. Then news of these things came
- 21:49to the ears of the church in Jerusalem.
- 21:51So they're hearing what's going on.
- 21:53The Lord is bringing a harvest. People are getting saved.
- 21:56So they think about who they sent out already that God has
- 22:02used. Now Barnabas is going to go as
- 22:05far as Antioch. They're sending Barnabas up
- 22:08there as a leader. And when he came and had seen
- 22:11the grace of God, the grace of God, right?
- 22:15When you see the grace of God, it attracts you.
- 22:19I want the grace of God to be poured on in here, that there's
- 22:23not enough room for people to come, not because of us, but
- 22:27because of the grace of God. I'll tell you an interesting
- 22:31story. I was on a Zoom call this week
- 22:35and I was with a man who is a devout Roman Catholic.
- 22:38Him and his wife, they happened to live in a garden apartment up
- 22:42in North Jersey, right by the Calvary Chapel, the large
- 22:45Calvary Chapel up in North Jersey.
- 22:48Pastor Lloyd Pulley, who's on our radio pastor's at church,
- 22:52and they would watch every Sunday these cars come and there
- 22:55was an overflow so people would park in the garden apartment
- 22:58parking lot. And he said to his wife, this
- 23:02guy Nix's name, he says, honey, what's what's going on here?
- 23:07Is that like a cult up there or what?
- 23:10These people, they get out of their car and they have an aura
- 23:12about them. He, the Holy Spirit, was helping
- 23:14them to see the glory of God on the faces of these families.
- 23:20And it was attracting him, the grace of God on these people
- 23:23like us just getting out of their car, walking into church.
- 23:27He said, you know, we had to go over there sometime.
- 23:29She says, yeah, why not? Why don't we go over there?
- 23:32So they went over and the first Sunday there for the first time
- 23:36in their lives, he told me this after the business Zoom call.
- 23:40He said, I want to talk to you about something off the record.
- 23:43I see you're involved. Involved with Calvary Chapel.
- 23:45Yeah. And I said, yeah.
- 23:47And so then he begins to open up.
- 23:48I want to tell you what happened.
- 23:50He said he went in. And for the first time in their
- 23:53lives, they heard the simple gospel.
- 23:57Thanks for joining us on this journey through Acts.
- 23:59On today's edition of Living Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark
- 24:03shares that one of the most remarkable things about the book
- 24:06of Acts is how it shows the disciples transformation.
- 24:10The followers of Jesus we meet here are very different from the
- 24:15often confused and fearful disciples in the Gospels.
- 24:19After Jesus's death and resurrection, and especially
