- 0:43Live Connections podcast on YouTube and at the USTFCCCA
- 0:47convention. Here is bonus material.
- 0:51So we're just going to keep the train rolling.
- 0:53This one might get off the rails here.
- 0:56Let's start with please introduce yourself Sir.
- 0:59Jim Stracker from that university.
- 1:02And you got to speak up a little bit, act like you're not on the
- 1:04track and, you know, yelling out score by 1 splits and 4 by 4
- 1:07splits and things like that. Speak up a little bit for all,
- 1:10right? I'll do.
- 1:12That all right what are? You doing here?
- 1:15What I mean by that is you have come to a lot of things, right?
- 1:18How many years have you gone to USTFCCA?
- 1:22Convention haven't whenever they started I've been.
- 1:28So you've been to when they're very small and now they're very
- 1:33large. Like we're having problems
- 1:34finding places to host these USTS CCA staff.
- 1:38It's just an amazing job of creating value that so many
- 1:41coaches are coming. So with this many years in a
- 1:44row, what are you looking for? What are you doing here?
- 1:46Is there a? Speaker that.
- 1:48You really want to are you speaking this year?
- 1:50But you know, I got to watch you and and you do an amazing job.
- 1:53What? Are you here for?
- 1:54What value are you getting out of the convention?
- 1:57I think actually the value that I'm getting.
- 2:02It's a real strength of yours. A lot of young coaches, even
- 2:06already today I've had a couple of high school.
- 2:08Coaches looking. To try to get into college
- 2:10coaching. So I think it's time to start
- 2:13paying it. Forward and.
- 2:16We were talking about we were out in our profession because
- 2:19back then our islands spent the time with us.
- 2:22That's right. So that's a great question.
- 2:25That's a question I get quite often.
- 2:28What what? What advice would you give to a
- 2:30high school coach that says I want to coach college because
- 2:34it's amazing, I want to be in the college level?
- 2:36What advice would you need? Well, definitely reach out.
- 2:39You know, we don't know who they are.
- 2:41A lot of times they just contact us and then it's again as much
- 2:46as anything. So you know and so you know.
- 2:50You have to turn over a lot of stones.
- 2:53Opportunity. But don't give up.
- 2:57I think we talked one time I I got into the profession, as Agai
- 3:02said, not 100 handwritten letters.
- 3:03And to to have a little bit of tenacity and pushing merits.
- 3:10You know what I I love one of the many, many goals that we
- 3:13have with the podcast. One of them is to bust myths or
- 3:16like the myth Busters, right? And I do love working towards
- 3:20busting the myth that a high school coach can't coach on the
- 3:23college level for all these different reasons, right?
- 3:25They don't have to recruit. They don't know how to run a
- 3:29college. You know AP and LS that you know
- 3:31budget and things. Like that?
- 3:32And then I get these amazing coaches like yourself on the
- 3:35podcast, and it's like, Oh yeah, I started coaching high school
- 3:37first. Like we had Chris Johnson, now
- 3:40women's coach, head coach at Nebris Arkansas, and he started
- 3:43as a high school coach. And it's like, oh, wait a
- 3:45minute, if all you guys started out as high school coaches, why
- 3:49can't we have high school coaches move up to the next?
- 3:52Yeah, no doubt. And it used to be, you know,
- 3:55college coaching the. Best high.
- 3:57School coaches. Became.
- 3:59Yeah, coaches. And.
- 4:01I've said this whole career that the best coaching in this
- 4:04country happens because that's the grassroots.
- 4:08They're taking. They're getting the athletes out
- 4:10there. And.
- 4:11And so, you know, I've always been a firm believer, but if I
- 4:15want to hire somebody who has less and.
- 4:18Still. Successful because given the
- 4:20right resources. I mean they.
- 4:22Can just. Yeah.
- 4:25It's a little sneak peek in January as we kick off our fifth
- 4:29season on the podcast, by the way, which is just bonkers to
- 4:32say out loud. We're going.
- 4:34To start. The year with a special Baylor 4
- 4:37by 4 series. So we're going to do 4 Baylor
- 4:41coaches in a row, 4 Baylor alums in a row.
- 4:43So we kicked it off. The first one will be Michael
- 4:46Ford, then we go Jeremy Warner and then we go David Hodge and
- 4:52then we anchor with Clyde her and it was awesome to hear Clyde
- 4:56story and you guys will get to hear at the end of January.
- 4:59About where? He started how he started and
- 5:01was a high school. Coach that's.
- 5:06Right. Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 5:08OK, Someone out there, Jim, is thinking about coming to this
- 5:12convention. They just can't hold the trigger
- 5:14for many reasons. Right.
- 5:15Maybe it's, you know, it's expensive to come to Denver next
- 5:18year at the corner Orlando. It's expensive to the hotel
- 5:20being away from friends and family during the, you know,
- 5:22kind of holiday time period. What convince them to come next
- 5:27year? Someone who's never been.
- 5:28But I'll tell you that Sam seems in.
- 5:30His committee, his. Staff, they put on a first class
- 5:34program for us and yeah, it might cost a little bit of
- 5:37money, but the amount of resources they put into this
- 5:40banquets all the. Different meals technical.
- 5:44Symposiums. And just for professional
- 5:47development, just the opportunity to have fellowship
- 5:51as well. Cost.
- 5:53Yeah, that's why I come every year is that I look forward to.
- 5:57It's always one of the highlights of my it's.
- 5:59My Super Bowl baby. How many on average new people
- 6:03do you think you walk away? No.
- 6:05After a week like this. Yeah, easy.
- 6:09And you've been now a dozen and you've been coming a long time.
- 6:13A newbie is going to walk away with 20304050.
- 6:17Heck, if you're open to it, you you easily meet 100 people that
- 6:20actually really care about what you're doing as a coach when
- 6:23you're high school junior college.
- 6:25Incidentally, NAIA, it doesn't matter.
- 6:27This is really I really do consider like my my Super Bowl
- 6:30man, I love this week. It's I gear up for every sick
- 6:33year. Yeah, we're all here for one
- 6:36reason. That's it.
- 6:37And we want to do what? We can.
- 6:40To make the sport better and so I think you're just going to be
- 6:44around a lot of hot. Winded people.
- 6:46And so if you have passion, it's just, it's just still.
- 6:50So it's, yeah, it's it's something that I just just feels
- 6:55grateful that I started on the beginning of it.
- 6:58Let's continue with that and. We appreciate.
- 7:00To get everything you do. Really drop?
- 7:04The balance. Between 8:00 this.
- 7:06Is why coaching? Is more.
- 7:08Than just being a coach. That's right.
- 7:11People first, it's people who choose to be a coach, not coach.
- 7:15Couple of fun things. I've got 100 random questions.
- 7:17Remember this from last year, One through 100.
- 7:19You can't pick the same number, whatever that was last year.
- 7:21OK, number. Four my #4.
- 7:25That's my favorite. All right, good alright topic is
- 7:28annoying much? Do you subscribe to YouTube
- 7:31Premium? And why in the heck will they
- 7:32just not stop asking me? I'm not subscribing the YouTube
- 7:35Premium. Well, you know me too well.
- 7:39You said that I was like, Oh yeah, who am I asking?
- 7:43Yeah. He does not subscribe to the
- 7:47YouTube agreement. We just got him to not print out
- 7:50emails and ask someone else to respond.
- 7:52I'm very proud. When you e-mail me, it means the
- 7:54world to. Me.
- 7:55All right, because you're a Guilt Connections podcast alone.
- 7:58Thank you for being on the show. We get to flip the script.
- 8:01You get to ask me one question unprepared here live.
- 8:04I want to join you on Saturday. You have in your football get
- 8:10together food menu games and. Everything.
- 8:15That looks like a lot of. Fun.
- 8:16You know, I'm a college football fan first, last, like I don't
- 8:20watch NFL, baseball, hockey, all this kind of stuff.
- 8:23And my wife is really love her to death bombed onto that.
- 8:27So I have 13 events a year roughly, you know, and we have
- 8:31an absolute blast and Troy's going to a ball game.
- 8:33So you know, we can't beat that. Me and Sean Wilburn are gonna
- 8:36get the the boxing squared. I did that with cream St.
- 8:39Thompson last year. He played UTSA and it's the most
- 8:42scared I've ever done. I was like cream, you know,
- 8:44we're playing. I mean he was like I was like,
- 8:46did he use the box because he is into is into Jim.
- 8:49What we're doing this year only for people who sit down here in
- 8:52the hot seat to say thank you small to the more appreciation
- 8:55to get the custom guilt connections podcast Christmas
- 8:58work. There we go.
- 9:00For when's? Going to.
- 9:00Put this on for one of like your 5 Christmas trees.
- 9:02I know you have more than one. I know you're more than one.
- 9:06Thank you so much.
