Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Do Actually Feel Seen & Heard?
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily here coming to you from the AG studio.
- 0:23Speaker 1: You are listening to five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I
- 0:27Speaker 1: feel happy right now. I feel happy and proud and content.
- 0:30Speaker 1: And I'll explain to you why. I shared a story
- 0:33Speaker 1: earlier yesterday on my Instagram and a girlfriend of mine
- 0:39Speaker 1: is wanting to pick up photography and she came by
- 0:43Speaker 1: a few days ago when we shot some photos.
- 0:45Speaker 2: What's up? She's a hurdler Claire, Hello, Hi, how are you?
- 0:49Speaker 1: And I wanted to share one of her beautiful photos
- 0:52Speaker 1: on my feed and I'm sitting there thinking about what
- 0:55Speaker 1: I wanted to caption it, when I just sayed decided
- 1:00Speaker 1: to say, hey, what's up.
- 1:03Speaker 2: I'm listening.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And the responses that came my way from sharing that
- 1:10Speaker 1: on Instagram were unexpected and that I feel like sometimes,
- 1:15Speaker 1: you know, when you just kind of throw something into
- 1:16Speaker 1: the world, you get like fire emojis and comments and
- 1:21Speaker 1: how the photo looks, et cetera, et cetera. But what
- 1:24Speaker 1: happened was a really beautiful conversation from people just kind
- 1:28Speaker 1: of pouring in with how they were really doing feedback.
- 1:33Speaker 1: I feeling overwhelmed people thinking about anxiety that comes hand
- 1:37Speaker 1: in hand with new relationships, moms dealing with postpartum, women
- 1:41Speaker 1: dealing with struggling at work, men being like opening up
- 1:45Speaker 1: about their feelings. And I was just sitting there kind
- 1:49Speaker 1: of in awe watching these conversations, some which I would
- 1:52Speaker 1: respond to, but others of just individuals talking to each
- 1:56Speaker 1: other and helping one another and listening. And what this
- 1:59Speaker 1: was such a beautiful reminder of is that so many
- 2:04Speaker 1: of us just crave the opportunity to be heard, right
- 2:09Speaker 1: And oftentimes we have people in our lives who will listen.
- 2:16Speaker 1: But the question is is are these people listening with
- 2:21Speaker 1: simply the intent to respond and reply, or are they
- 2:24Speaker 1: listening and giving you the space that maybe you craving
- 2:27Speaker 1: that you need listening and making you feel heard. And
- 2:33Speaker 1: there's a big difference between the two, I would say,
- 2:35Speaker 1: And so to be able on that platform as well
- 2:39Speaker 1: as I would hope on hurdle and through hurdle and
- 2:42Speaker 1: through the community. And I'll link to the quote unquote
- 2:45Speaker 1: super secret Facebook group if.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You want to get in on that.
- 2:48Speaker 1: It makes me feel in my heart that something good
- 2:51Speaker 1: is happening here. I know something good is happening here,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and I'm just happy to be a part of it
- 2:57Speaker 1: and happy to be someone that can provide that space
- 3:00Speaker 1: for you all to feel seen. I also think on
- 3:04Speaker 1: this note of being open and honest, it kind of
- 3:07Speaker 1: talks on the mental health side of things, and that
- 3:10Speaker 1: if you feel as though you want to be heard
- 3:13Speaker 1: more often, or if you feel as though you are
- 3:16Speaker 1: struggling a little bit with that, I would suggest and
- 3:20Speaker 1: recommend beyond kind of doing an audit about the relationships
- 3:24Speaker 1: that you have in your life, and if you feel
- 3:25Speaker 1: as though that you have people that you can really
- 3:28Speaker 1: talk to one on one that give you that space,
- 3:31Speaker 1: make sure that you're doing your best to seek out
- 3:35Speaker 1: options for mental health, whether that is a therapist or
- 3:39Speaker 1: a life coach. I've talked about this a few times
- 3:42Speaker 1: here now since I started working with her six weeks ago,
- 3:44Speaker 1: but talking to my life coach has really made just
- 3:47Speaker 1: the most profound and beautiful difference for me as I'm
- 3:50Speaker 1: kind of navigating my way through a what I deem
- 3:53Speaker 1: to be period of transition. At the moment, I feel
- 3:59Speaker 1: every five minute Friday like I get to this point
- 4:01Speaker 1: and I want to say something else and that I've
- 4:02Speaker 1: just been rambling. But every time when I point that out,
- 4:05Speaker 1: I get a lot of messages from all of you
- 4:08Speaker 1: telling me that I'm rambling and saying the things that
- 4:10Speaker 1: you needed to hear, So I hope that that's the case.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Here my prompt for you this week on five Minute Friday,
- 4:16Speaker 1: how are you really? How are you really? It's so
- 4:20Speaker 1: easy just to answer that question with I'm good. But
- 4:23Speaker 1: as that post showed me yesterday, and as I know
- 4:27Speaker 1: from my interactions with so many of you, it's really
- 4:30Speaker 1: important to do an audit on what's really going on there.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So maybe you write it down, maybe you have a
- 4:36Speaker 2: conversation with.
- 4:36Speaker 1: A friend, but get honest and open about that this week,
- 4:39Speaker 1: on how you're really doing inside and maybe what you
- 4:42Speaker 1: need to move forward and feel a little bit.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Better about that. And now I listen our question. Hi Emily,
- 4:48Speaker 2: I'm Kate from Kentucky. I'm new to the podcast and
- 4:51Speaker 2: loving it, but was hoping you could go back a
- 4:54Speaker 2: little bit. What encouraged you to start the podcast and
- 4:58Speaker 2: why do you keep going Oh, Hello, we love relatively
- 5:02Speaker 2: new new hurdlers. You're welcome here, so happy to have you.
- 5:07Speaker 1: A lot of the backstory and kind of the things
- 5:09Speaker 1: that you're getting that here are in episode one, I
- 5:12Speaker 1: actually listened to it not that long ago, and it
- 5:14Speaker 1: made me smile because I expected to listen back to
- 5:16Speaker 1: that episode from the very very beginning of twenty eighteen
- 5:19Speaker 1: and be like, oh my god, what were you doing here?
- 5:23Speaker 2: But in all honesty, it made me smile. It was good.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It was a good listen anyway, a lot of info
- 5:28Speaker 1: about me and my backstory on Hurdle and how I
- 5:32Speaker 1: got to this point in that episode. I'll link in
- 5:34Speaker 1: the show notes, but some quick spark notes. Wow, haven't
- 5:37Speaker 1: said the word spark notes in a long time.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Highlights. I am a career journalist.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I went to the University of Connecticut, where I stubbled stubbled,
- 5:49Speaker 1: studied journalism and political science, graduated, got a couple of
- 5:54Speaker 1: internships in editorial. My second internship in editorial was at
- 5:57Speaker 1: a company called Cafe Mom. I was at a Mom
- 6:00Speaker 1: as an editorial intern turned editorial assistant turned associate editor
- 6:05Speaker 1: for three and a half years. Then transitioned into the
- 6:07Speaker 1: health and wellness space with my first job as a
- 6:10Speaker 1: fitness editor at Rodale. Went from Roadale to Self Magazine,
- 6:13Speaker 1: where I was the fitness editor there, and then when
- 6:15Speaker 1: Self Magazine folded in twenty sixteen, twenty seventeen.
- 6:20Speaker 2: God, I've lost all track of time.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I went out on my own as a freelance journalist,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and about a year into that journey, writing everywhere from
- 6:27Speaker 1: GQ to Runners World, checking off bylines on what I
- 6:31Speaker 1: call bylines bucket list, I decided that I wanted to
- 6:33Speaker 1: own something and create something of my own. I was
- 6:36Speaker 1: going through a really tough time personally. That's when I
- 6:41Speaker 1: was getting out of my last serious relationship or last
- 6:45Speaker 1: titled relationship. I've definitely had some serious relationships since them,
- 6:49Speaker 1: but they never got to that phase I digress. I
- 6:53Speaker 1: was sitting with a friend on the couch one day,
- 6:55Speaker 1: just like really struggling, and I said to her, I
- 6:58Speaker 1: so desperately want to get over this hurdle. And when
- 7:00Speaker 1: it came out of my mouth, I was like, that's it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I want to talk to people about how they manage theirs.
- 7:06Speaker 1: And knowing and having a background in the health and
- 7:08Speaker 1: wellness space, being a certified trainer and a run coach
- 7:11Speaker 1: and a precision level nutrition coach, and just having this
- 7:14Speaker 1: vested interest in health and wellness as you know, a
- 7:17Speaker 1: dedicated athlete and runner.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I knew that that's.
- 7:22Speaker 1: What the podcast would kind of focus on so talking
- 7:24Speaker 1: to athletes and CEOs and experts in the wellness industry
- 7:28Speaker 1: was just one hundred percent where I wanted to go
- 7:30Speaker 1: with it, and so Hurdle started it as a bi
- 7:32Speaker 1: weekly show and as you know now as an avid
- 7:34Speaker 1: hurdler and everyone listening to this, it comes up three
- 7:36Speaker 1: times a week and it has become my shtick. It's
- 7:39Speaker 1: the thing that I care about. I'm so passionate about
- 7:41Speaker 1: it for so many reasons, especially you know what I
- 7:45Speaker 1: set up top is that I feel so passionately about
- 7:47Speaker 1: empowering others to feel less alone on their journey and
- 7:51Speaker 1: to be a source of comfort, inspiration and motivation in
- 7:54Speaker 1: whatever way that I can responsibly to whoever's listening to
- 7:59Speaker 1: that and whoever wants to come my way.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So what excites me about it regularly now?
- 8:07Speaker 1: I would have to say it's that opportunity, right, And
- 8:11Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty freaking awesome that I found a
- 8:13Speaker 1: way to just have conversations with so many people that
- 8:16Speaker 1: inspired me on the regular and make a job out
- 8:19Speaker 1: of it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: So there's that again.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I love your questions, So please, if you have one
