Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to the Tabernacle talk.
- 0:16Today we are in first Timothy chapter 5, first Timothy 5, and
- 0:21we're going to be looking at verses one through 16.
- 0:25Now, today's passage has some really interesting verses and
- 0:30and things, topics that it's going to be talking about.
- 0:32And not all of these things kind of translate well into our
- 0:37current culture. So we don't do some of the
- 0:39things that are talked about here.
- 0:41This was a specific church, the church at Ephesus that Paul's
- 0:45son in the faith, Timothy, was helping to kind of lead and
- 0:49direct out of some false teaching, bad behavior, false
- 0:53doctrine. And so Paul is helping Timothy,
- 0:56if you will, kind of put the church back in order or as we
- 1:00would read in chapter 3, Paul told Timothy, I have written
- 1:05these things so that you will know how people ought to conduct
- 1:09themselves in God's household, which is the Church of the
- 1:13living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.
- 1:17So that's the purpose for why this letter is written.
- 1:21And we're going to see some specific things that the church
- 1:25at Ephesus was paying for financially.
- 1:29So we're going to be looking at a little of that both today and
- 1:32tomorrow. So if you will, this is the one
- 1:35of the only times that we get a look at the budget of early
- 1:40churches. And so I, I think that this will
- 1:43be a really interesting look together.
- 1:46So let's begin reading. I'm going to read all the way
- 1:48through verses one through 16. And then we'll go back and we'll
- 1:51look believe that there's three, yeah, there's three main
- 1:55sections that we're going to look at.
- 1:56So beginning in verse number one of First Timothy 5, don't rebuke
- 2:00an older man, but exhort him as a father, younger men as
- 2:05brothers, older women as mothers, and the younger women
- 2:09as sisters with all purity. Support widows who are genuinely
- 2:14in need, but if any widow has children or grandchildren, let
- 2:18them learn to practice godliness toward their own family 1st and
- 2:23to repay their parents, for this pleases God.
- 2:26The widow who is truly in need and left all alone has put her
- 2:30hope in God and continues night and day in her petitions and
- 2:34prayers. However, she who is self
- 2:36indulgent is dead even while she lives.
- 2:39Command this also so that they will be above reproach.
- 2:43But if anyone does not provide for his own family, especially
- 2:47for his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse
- 2:51than an unbeliever. No widow is to be enrolled on
- 2:54the list for support unless she is at least 60 years old, has
- 2:59been the wife of one husband, and is well known for good
- 3:02works. That is, if she has brought up
- 3:04children, shown hospitality, washed the Saints feet, helped
- 3:07the afflicted, and devoted herself to every good work.
- 3:11But refuse to enroll younger widows in.
- 3:15Sorry, but refuse to enroll younger widows.
- 3:17For when they are drawn away from Christ by desire, they want
- 3:21to marry, and will therefore receive condemnation because
- 3:24they have renounced their original pledge.
- 3:27At the same time, they also learn to be idle, going from
- 3:31house to house. They're not only idle, but are
- 3:33also gossips and busy bodies saying things they shouldn't
- 3:37say. Therefore, I want younger women
- 3:40to marry, have children, manage their households, and give the
- 3:44adversary no opportunity to accuse us, for some have already
- 3:48turned away to follow Satan. If any believing woman has
- 3:52widows in her family, let her help them.
- 3:55Let the church not be burdened so that it can help widows in
- 3:59genuine need. All right.
- 4:03Well, this is, as I'm sure you guys noticed as we went through
- 4:07this is a smorgasbord of us entering into a a church
- 4:14scenario that is very, very foreign to us.
- 4:17So let's begin first with verses 1 and 2, because that's the easy
- 4:20part of the passage. That's the familiar things here.
- 4:23He says don't rebuke an older man.
- 4:27So let me give kind of the best example I currently know of.
- 4:32So here Paul is writing to Timothy.
- 4:33He had just said don't let anyone despise or look down on
- 4:37your youth, but be an example of the believers.
- 4:40And here he tells this young pastor, don't rebuke an older
- 4:45man. I have kids and I've got my 66
- 4:50year old as of this Sunday. So I think it's like 2 days
- 4:53after this comes out, I'll have a six year old, my son.
- 4:58I can talk to him and I can correct him in some ways that if
- 5:04I corrected people within my church, especially older men, I
- 5:09think I mentioned an episode or two ago, I'm currently the
- 5:13youngest male member at Tabernacle.
- 5:17So literally any guy at Tabernacle would be an older man
- 5:20to me. But you know, I've got some of
- 5:23my friends, you know, let's say Jim Newman or Bob Bourne or you
- 5:28know that that was another guys if I corrected them if and when
- 5:34they were to do something wrong, like I correct my 6 year old
- 5:38here. Paul says that that wouldn't be
- 5:40an appropriate way to treat someone within the family of
- 5:44God. It's not that someone doesn't
- 5:46need some correction, but he says don't do it like a rebuke.
- 5:50Don't do it like you are talking to an inferior.
- 5:54You are talking to someone that is part of the same family, the
- 5:58same household that you are a part of.
- 6:01So he says don't rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father
- 6:05that you are encouraging him to go in the right.
- 6:09He is not, if you will, other people at Tabernacle.
- 6:13They are not my my servants, my household slaves.
- 6:18That's not the relationship that we have.
- 6:20We have the relationship of family.
- 6:23And so here he says, Timothy, as you're interacting with older
- 6:25men in the church, like exhort them, encourage them in the
- 6:29right way that they ought to go, if you will.
- 6:32We're we're pushing people towards Christ likeness.
- 6:36We're not necessarily always and again, I need to temper even
- 6:43this verse with other passages that both Jesus and Paul
- 6:48instruct us like, hey, there are going to come times when you
- 6:50need to like sharply correct someone where you do need to
- 6:54rebuke someone because they've sinned.
- 6:56Paul does that with Peter Galatians 2.
- 6:59He highlights that. So there are times that a rebuke
- 7:03needs to happen, but as far as a regular habit, especially the
- 7:07younger pastor is I need to be encouraging people towards the
- 7:11right way. Can I ask you, when you try to
- 7:14correct other people, are you doing it like in a rebuking
- 7:18manner? Like, oh man, you really screwed
- 7:20that up. You did this awful.
- 7:22You never, you need to never do this or that again.
- 7:25Or are you encouraging people towards the right path?
- 7:27Like, hey, I know you said this the the last time that we were
- 7:32together. It would really help me and help
- 7:37our relationship if you did this next time or if you said it in
- 7:42this way next time. I think that there's some
- 7:45valuable things here as we think about like relationship and
- 7:49especially relationship with people, that maybe there's some
- 7:52weird age dynamics. Maybe there's a even can be like
- 7:57a, a gender dynamic or a cultural dynamic, Perhaps that
- 8:02encouraging people towards good behavior can even be better than
- 8:06just correcting bad behavior or chiding, you know, kind of
- 8:12laying down the law for someone. So he says, don't rebuke an
- 8:16older man, but exhort him as a father.
- 8:19And then he gives some different ways in which Timothy is to
- 8:23interact with the various ages and genders of those within the
- 8:27church. He says, treat the older men in
- 8:29the church like they are your father.
- 8:31So however you would treat. Again, this only works if you're
- 8:35led by the Spirit. I, I know many people during
- 8:38this time, many people even that might be listening or watching
- 8:42to this, listening to or watching this podcast.
- 8:45You might be like, oh, OK, I can treat them like I'd treat my
- 8:48dad. Yeah, I'm really going to let
- 8:49him have it. No, no, no.
- 8:51This is in an ideal situation. Here is how you would want to
- 8:56treat your father and a good earthly father.
- 9:01That is the way in which you should interact with older men
- 9:05within the church. That doesn't just go for the
- 9:07pastor, by the way. You should also follow that
- 9:10instruction if you are, you know, an older woman, or perhaps
- 9:15you're an older man. You're not the oldest man in the
- 9:18church when there are other older men like view them as part
- 9:21of your same family. You are not just people who go
- 9:25to the same place together to worship.
- 9:27You are not just people that you know, pay your dues to get into
- 9:33a club together. No, you are family members.
- 9:36And so treat each other like it. Have encouragement, have growth,
- 9:40have a love and a care for one another within the household,
- 9:44the family of God. She says treat the older men
- 9:47like fathers. He says treat the younger men as
- 9:50brothers. That when I interact with, you
- 9:53know, Zach or when I interact with Mike, I'm viewing these as
- 9:58brotherly relationships. We are not rivals.
- 10:03We are not people with, you know, competing ideas within a
- 10:08company. No, we are part of the same
- 10:10family. And so that ought to materially
- 10:13change the way that we interact with one another.
- 10:16And fortunately a lot of churches, especially if they
- 10:18want to do things well and they want to have excellence in what
- 10:22they do. Part of the the problem that can
- 10:24often come is we view the church as being a product or we view
- 10:29the church as a laundry list of programs that we put on that
- 10:36hopefully get people to come to the church rather than know this
- 10:39is a family. And so we are inviting people
- 10:41into a family relationship. And if the church is a business,
- 10:46well, you can just not do business at that location
- 10:49anymore. Or they don't sell the product
- 10:53that I want anymore. And so I'm going to leave the
- 10:54church. That is not what the church is.
- 10:56The church is a family. So treat the older men as
- 10:58fathers. Treat the younger men as
- 11:00brothers. Says treat the older women as
- 11:02mothers and the younger women as sisters.
- 11:05And then he adds here with all purity.
- 11:07Hey, young Pastor Timothy, treat the young women like your
- 11:11sisters with all purity. And frankly, as you look over
- 11:16the last, you know, 30 to 40 years, especially with the
- 11:19advent of greater accountability in the world, you can see over
- 11:23and over and over again where there have been pastors or
- 11:27church leaders or those in charge of either those in charge
- 11:32of children that did not have this mindset.
- 11:34Like, no, this is my family member.
- 11:36Like I protect them, I care for them, I love them.
- 11:39It's when, if you will, when pastors get predatory, that
- 11:43awful things take place. And so I want to encourage you
- 11:47the with all purity that can go for any particular age, you
- 11:51know, you, you can be inappropriate with an older man
- 11:55or an older woman or a younger man or a younger woman with all
- 12:00of the relationships that you have, like treat them all with
- 12:03purity, that there's a sincerity, a simplicity in the
- 12:07way that you're interacting with one another.
- 12:10You're just true of heart in the way that you are interacting.
- 12:14You're not, you're not interacting at church in order
- 12:17to get something from someone else, but it's just genuine
- 12:22familial love between the lot of you.
- 12:26So there's that first part. Treat one another like family.
- 12:30Then he goes into you actual family members and those that,
- 12:36as we're talking here about older women, some of the older
- 12:39women will find themselves in time of great need.
- 12:45Back in 1st century Rome. You do not have Social Security,
- 12:50you don't have pensions, you don't have retirement.
- 12:54When a woman's husband died, especially if she did not have
- 12:59family, that could be an incredibly dire situation and
- 13:04she could be in tremendous need. And so the church at Ephesus,
- 13:09their practice, and I think we could see even some of this back
- 13:12in Acts 6 with the apostles and then the first kind of proto
- 13:17deacons caring for the Hellenistic Jews and the Hebraic
- 13:23Jews, that there was a consistent care in the early
- 13:27church for the financial needs of truly destitute widows.
- 13:33And man, what a, what a joy to see God's people caring for
- 13:39those that are genuinely in need.
- 13:41Now today we do have great wonderful things like Social
- 13:46Security, life insurance, pensions and, and you know, 4 O1
- 13:51KS and all that kind of stuff. So today people can be set up in
- 13:55some situations to be better off.
- 13:59But churches are often still called on, frankly, almost
- 14:03every, almost every phone call that I have ever received on a
- 14:08church landline, almost every single one of those calls has
- 14:12been for money. Now, sometimes that's been a a
- 14:15missionary calling about financial support, but far and
- 14:19away the most common communication that a church
- 14:23landline gets, like literally 9 out of 10 calls are someone
- 14:28asking for money from the church, people that have no
- 14:32interaction with the church. I think versus 3 through 16
- 14:36actually give us a really good road map for how we think about
- 14:40how the church spends its funds. So let's walk through this
- 14:44together. I'm going to be honest with you
- 14:46guys. I, I haven't done a full like
- 14:48walkthrough breakdown write down of this passage before.
- 14:52And so I'm going to kind of be verbally processing through some
- 14:57things as we're walking together.
- 14:59And so we're going to learn this together.
- 15:01And if I say anything that's dumb, you can be like, well,
- 15:04Brian, that was kind of dumb. And I probably, as I say it will
- 15:07think that was dumb, that that wasn't correct.
- 15:09Hopefully, I'll, I'll correct myself soon, soon enough as I
- 15:13speak it. So verse #3 he says support
- 15:15widows who are genuinely in need.
- 15:20Support widows. Or maybe, depending on your
- 15:23translation, you might see the word honor.
- 15:25That same phrase is going to come up again in verse #17
- 15:29talking about elders that labor in teaching and preaching.
- 15:33But it's that we are to support those widows who are genuinely
- 15:38in need. So there are some people that
- 15:40would seek financial support from the church in the 1st
- 15:44century there in Ephesus that should not receive church funds.
- 15:48OK, Who should and who should not receive church funds in, if
- 15:53you will, the widows program. Now this was not just giving
- 15:59money to widows, this was actually these women were viewed
- 16:04as kind of like employees of the church.
- 16:06So a little bit in the same way as the elders at the church, not
- 16:11all of them, but those that labored in teaching and
- 16:16preaching were provided for financially by the church.
- 16:20The, the widows who would be on this particular list, the
- 16:26supported widows list, they had responsibilities at the church.
- 16:30I think that's a super interesting thought.
- 16:34Like if you went, OK, well, who all does your church hire?
- 16:36Well, we hire widows 60 and above with no family in the area
- 16:42and, and we, you know, hire some of our, our teachers and
- 16:49preachers at the church, like those are the two groups that we
- 16:52hire. You might be like, wow, that's,
- 16:54that's a really weird employee list or criteria, you know, job
- 16:58qualifications. You have first Timothy 3 one
- 17:01through 6 and you have first Timothy 5 three through 16.
- 17:04You might be like, wow, that's those some weird job
- 17:06qualifications. But this is what the early
- 17:08church did. So, so support widows who are
- 17:11genuinely in need. OK, Timothy would then say This
- 17:15is why Paul writes the rest of us all right, what defines in
- 17:18need? Who do we hire onto this
- 17:20particular list? He says, but if any widow has
- 17:23children or grandchildren, let them learn to practice godliness
- 17:28toward their own family 1st and to repay their parents for this
- 17:33pleases God. Here are the first criteria that
- 17:36Paul has is they cannot have local individuals within their
- 17:42own family. Those individuals within their
- 17:44family, they are to be responsible for meeting the
- 17:49financial needs of those that are their family members.
- 17:53And here he even phrases it as they need to practice godliness.
- 17:56It is a matter of faithfulness and being like our God to take
- 18:01care financially of your family members, especially those that
- 18:06are elderly. This can definitely be a trying
- 18:12thing for some families. I forget if I mentioned it at
- 18:15all on the podcast last year, but my in laws were caretaking
- 18:19for my father in It was very expensive at times
- 18:35it could be emotionally taxing, but they did it out of love for
- 18:41Chuck's mom and they did it out of really, I think a reflection
- 18:47of the heart of God that God says, listen, I will provide
- 18:51food and water and shelter and clothing and I will sometimes
- 18:56give those things to people through their family members.
- 19:00So those that have family, their family has a responsibility
- 19:05towards that person and I love that.
- 19:08He says that they need to practice godliness and to repay
- 19:13their parents for this pleases God.
- 19:17Brian and Sally Self, my parents, they supported me for,
- 19:23you know, really, I'll say 21 years of my life.
- 19:28Obviously in college, I, I began, you know, supporting
- 19:32myself in some ways and, and, and working all through college,
- 19:35that kind of stuff. But they were there for me and,
- 19:38and they helped out financially at sometimes that were a huge
- 19:42blessing to me. But they worked their tails off
- 19:46to give me clothing and food and family and fun, all of that over
- 19:54the course of the 1st 21 years of my life.
- 19:56I should not get to, you know, like let's say my parents are.
- 20:0165 or 70 or 95 and they're in need.
- 20:06I shouldn't go. Well, listen, I've got my own
- 20:10family now. And you guys, you know you, you
- 20:13made your bed now you got to sleep in it.
- 20:16I am not responsible for you. Scripture says your family
- 20:20members, your your parents or your grandparents, you owe them
- 20:26a debt. That is what God says.
- 20:29And so care for them, love them, provide for them.
- 20:32However God enables you to. Just like you would say if you
- 20:35had a kid, you have a responsibility to care for that
- 20:38child. God says you have a
- 20:40responsibility. If you have parents or
- 20:42grandparents, you have a responsibility to make sure that
- 20:46they are provided for, that they are cared for, that they are OK.
- 20:50This is what the word of God says verse #5 the widow who is
- 20:53truly in need and left all alone has put her hope in God and
- 20:56continues night and day in her petitions and prayers.
- 20:59A widow that does not have family but is really just
- 21:03reliant on God to go, all right, Lord, if I'm going to have food,
- 21:06if I'm going to have clothing, I need you to help me.
- 21:10That should be where, if you will, the church's benevolence
- 21:13goes to those who are without other recourse.
- 21:17There's no one else that ought to be responsible to care for
- 21:22their needs, but it's someone that their only hope is God.
- 21:26Paul says, hey, the church is a great answer from the Lord to
- 21:32that person as they are praying for God to meet their needs.
- 21:36Verse #6 as opposed to a widow who is truly in need and calls
- 21:41out to God. Verse number six.
- 21:43However, she who is self indulgent is dead even while she
- 21:47lives. Someone that is spending and
- 21:51wasting everything that they have like indulgently.
- 21:55They're not being careful. They're not in, if you will, I'm
- 21:59going to use the word investing. I don't necessarily mean like
- 22:01into a four O 1K or something, but they're not making good
- 22:04financial decisions. They're they're making wasteful
- 22:07financial decisions. Paul says, listen, that person
- 22:11like they are making the choice of what they are relying on.
- 22:15And what they are relying on right now is, oh, I can have
- 22:18fun. I can have some funds, and then
- 22:21I'll just ask the church for money.
- 22:24Unfortunately, as a pastor, or maybe fortunately, now that
- 22:28we're in the social media age, you're able to see when people
- 22:33are, you know, requesting funds and things from the church.
- 22:37You're able to see, Oh, yeah, they were out partying all last
- 22:40week and two weeks ago, You know, they are showing off, you
- 22:44know, some fancy watch and oh, man, they just got a new car
- 22:48about two months ago. And hear from the word of God.
- 22:51We're instructed like there are people who are genuinely in need
- 22:55and they are calling out to God for help and they're not using,
- 23:00they are not requesting funds from the church.
- 23:02They're not, you know, requesting to be hired is one of
- 23:04these widows on the roll. They're not requesting money in
- 23:09order to further bankroll like all the fun that they want to
- 23:13have. Like they're just genuinely in
- 23:15need. Help out people who are
- 23:17genuinely in need. Verse #7 command this also so
- 23:22that they will be above reproach that anyone that would see these
- 23:27widows that are on the roll, they go man, you know Miss Susan
- 23:31is just a phenomenal person and she is godly and you know she
- 23:36misses Mr. Steve very much. But man, Miss Susan like she,
- 23:41she is a prayer warrior. She loves the Lord.
- 23:44I'm so glad that we as a church get to help out Miss Susan.
- 23:49Verse #8 It says but if anyone does not provide for his own
- 23:54family, especially for his own household, he has denied the
- 23:58faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
- 24:02This would be because God is the one that provides for us like he
- 24:06sacrificed his life to care for us.
- 24:09But someone that does not hear a man that does not provide for
- 24:15the needs of his family, especially when that here
- 24:19there's a widow. So this would be his mom or his
- 24:22grandma that is totally destitute and in need of
- 24:26financial assistance or in need of a home and he does nothing to
- 24:30help her. That is so anti gospel.
- 24:33And so here that's why Paul says this person is worse than an
- 24:37unbeliever. I grew up on the King James, it
- 24:39says is worse than an infidel. It is to deny the faith, to deny
- 24:44loving care for those within your family.
- 24:48Do with that, however the Lord guides your spirit.
- 24:51Verse #9 No widow is to be enrolled on the list for support
- 24:55unless she is at least 60 years old, has been the wife of one
- 24:59husband, and is well known for good works.
- 25:02I have to hurry up here real quick.
- 25:04This is hopeful. Paul is walking through.
- 25:07All right, Who goes on the list? Is it just anyone that does not
- 25:11currently have a husband? He says no.
- 25:13This ought to be people that they are faithful to the spouse
- 25:17that they had. You don't have, you know, serial
- 25:20adulteresses, sexually promiscuous people.
- 25:24You have people that they they can't remarry.
- 25:26Here it's 60 years old is the age that he sets for it.
- 25:30Certainly if you're past 60, you can marry.
- 25:33But here Paul says you're not as likely to.
- 25:35This is someone in kind of the sunset years of their life, they
- 25:39aren't going to be able to remarry.
- 25:41And so he says those that have been faithful to their spouse,
- 25:46they aren't able to remarry and thus find support from from
- 25:51their new husband. And they are known for just
- 25:55doing good works. This is a great category for
- 25:58anyone that the church would give money to is prioritize
- 26:02those that they're going through incredibly hard times.
- 26:05But man, they are faithful, good people.
- 26:07And I've seen so many of those within my life.
- 26:10I do not have time to give illustrations.
- 26:13But then in verse #10 Paul describes what some of those
- 26:17good works are bringing up. Children like loving kids, not
- 26:23abdicating their responsibilities.
- 26:26But OK, I had these kids and now I'm going to raise these kids.
- 26:30Showing hospitality to others, making food for others or having
- 26:35them into their home. Washing the Saints feet.
- 26:38This is personal, devoted care and love for another.
- 26:43It says. Helping the afflicted and
- 26:45devoting themselves to every good work.
- 26:47This is what it looks like to do good and all of these things.
- 26:51This goes for widows. This goes for regular men and
- 26:54women. This goes for single people.
- 26:56All of these works are great things for all of us to do.
- 27:00Where's #11 but refused to enroll younger widows.
- 27:03And here he's talking specifically about those that
- 27:06would pursue desire leaving Christ and adopting the religion
- 27:13of their new husbands. So Paul wants younger widows to
- 27:17remarry. That's what we're told in verse
- 27:19#14 he says, I want the younger women, the younger widows to
- 27:23remarry. But like they should only be
- 27:27marrying other Christians. Christians should not marry non
- 27:30Christians. That is a consistent theme
- 27:33throughout scripture. So verse 11 he says, but refuse
- 27:36to enroll younger with us. For when they are drawn away
- 27:38from Christ by desire, they want to marry and will therefore
- 27:41receive condemnation because they've renounced their original
- 27:44pledge. So you would have those that
- 27:46would want to get on this this church widow role to receive
- 27:52funds, but then these ones that were like, Oh yes, like we will
- 27:56care. We will pray for people.
- 27:58We will help people. They meet someone that is not a
- 28:03Christian and they go, they marry that person, they adopt
- 28:07this new religion. And the church has been, if you
- 28:09will, bankrolling them all of this time as they do that.
- 28:13And there's condemnation there as they've renounced their
- 28:15pledge to Christ and renounce their pledge to help out those
- 28:21within the church. Verse #13 At the same time, they
- 28:23also learn to be idle, going from house to house.
- 28:26So they are lazy that are not doing anything with their time.
- 28:30They're not doing anything spiritually productive with
- 28:32their time. They're going from house to
- 28:33house. They are gossips and busy bodies
- 28:36saying things they shouldn't say.
- 28:38Here again in the Bible, gossips, those that slander
- 28:41others. That is never a good thing.
- 28:43Verse 14 Therefore, I want younger women to marry, have
- 28:46children, manage their households and give the
- 28:48adversary no opportunity to accuse us attempt as far as the
- 28:55Lord gives you the ability to walk in the regular everyday
- 28:59life that God has for you. Whether that's a first
- 29:01Corinthian 7 God's given you the gift of singleness like use it
- 29:04to pursue Christ and serve the church and a lot of others.
- 29:08If God leads you into marriage that you use that and pursue
- 29:13like not just vacations and trips and fun and lots of money.
- 29:18No, no, like pursue loving your spouse, loving your children
- 29:22that the Lord gives you and children are a good thing a a
- 29:24heritage, a treasure, a gift from the Lord is what we read
- 29:27together in Psalms. All of that takes place.
- 29:31This is so that the adversary Satan does not accuse us.
- 29:36He says for some have already turned away to follow.
- 29:39Satan says if any believing woman has widows in her family,
- 29:43let her help them. Let the church not be burdened
- 29:46so that it can help widows in genuine need.
- 29:49From this I would get, and this is the last thing I'll say today
- 29:52because I know I went way over on time again, the church ought
- 29:58to do what no one else can do. So if there's someone that could
- 30:03be meeting a need, the church does not need to take that on.
- 30:07If there's a need that only the church can meet, then the church
- 30:12can. And I, I would say has a
- 30:13scriptural responsibility to care for those without any other
- 30:17recourse. So I don't know what the Lord
- 30:19has for you from some of that today.
- 30:20Maybe you need to care for your family.
- 30:22Maybe you need to treat others within the body of Christ as
- 30:25your brothers and sisters or as a spiritual father or mother
- 30:29having a love and a care for them.
- 30:30Maybe God wants you to not be a gossip or a busy body, or the
- 30:34Lord would have you to like, love your spouse and live life
- 30:39to the fullest in the ways that he would have you. 2 All of
- 30:43these are wonderful truths that we can apply to our lives and I
- 30:48hope it's been an encouragement to you today.
- 30:51See you next episode as we look at Elders, the good and the bad,
- 30:55and looking forward to that time together.
