- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 0:04Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hello, good morning. Happy Wednesday. Thanks for joining us. Headlines
- 0:10Speaker 2: are brought to you by Frostbeard Coors Light Shoes Chill. Hello,
- 0:14Speaker 2: Las Montes. Man, it's almost like maybe you should have
- 0:18Speaker 2: been up here earlier. It would have been nice if
- 0:20Speaker 2: we had been up here in maybe May. It was
- 0:23Speaker 2: quite the debut. 407 feet to straightaway center field at
- 0:25Speaker 2: Fenway Park, which is a nice poke. It's not easy
- 0:28Speaker 2: to do. Youngest Mariner in franchise history to hit a
- 0:31Speaker 2: home run in his Major League debut. 21 years, 314 days,
- 0:35Speaker 2: almost two full years younger than Alvin Davis. He played
- 0:38Speaker 2: air guitar with Randy Rosarino on the Trident in the dugout.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Good vibes. It was almost like Elenio Suarez had just
- 0:45Speaker 2: landed in the Mariner's dugout last night when Laz Montes
- 0:48Speaker 2: makes his Major League debut in home run. Sixth Mariner
- 0:52Speaker 2: in franchise history to home run his Major League debut.
- 0:54Speaker 2: First since Kyle Lewis in 2019. The others were Kenji Jojima,
- 0:58Speaker 2: Gray Dobbs, Alvin Davis, Jamie Nelson, first guy with two
- 1:04Speaker 2: hits in a Major League debut for the Mariners since
- 1:06Speaker 2: Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. Wow, what a stellar comparison.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Here, let's listen in.
- 1:13Speaker 4: Another one, two. Fly ball.
- 1:16Speaker 5: Corked out to center field. It's flying away.
- 1:20Speaker 3: It's a home run.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Light tower power inside Fenway Park. Lázaro Montes with an
- 1:30Speaker 5: absolute missile. Welcome to the show.
- 1:35Speaker 2: That's Aaron Goltz with the Cozum Mariners TV, who realized
- 1:38Speaker 2: as the ball was in flight, it was going out
- 1:40Speaker 2: instead of off the bat.
- 1:41Speaker 6: It is very difficult to recognize whether or not.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It's going to go out.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Well, I've been in the press box in Fenway Park
- 1:47Speaker 2: and many times covering from the A's, and it is
- 1:50Speaker 2: hard to see balls to hit in flight there with
- 1:52Speaker 2: the angle, even in the broadcast booth straight behind. I'm
- 1:56Speaker 2: not trying to knock Aaron Goldsmith, but you could hear
- 1:58Speaker 2: him hit the realization mid-call. Oh, this is going to
- 2:01Speaker 2: be a home run.
- 2:01Speaker 3: That's real.
- 2:02Speaker 6: And I love that when announcers are living it like
- 2:05Speaker 6: we are.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So the Mariners win. They were up 9-1. They win 9-6.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Made up a game on the trash cans who lost,
- 2:13Speaker 2: so the Mims are five back from the AL West lead,
- 2:17Speaker 2: 23 games remaining. Today, the finale of the road trip
- 2:19Speaker 2: at Fenway Park afternoon game. Bryce Miller starts for the
- 2:22Speaker 2: M's trying to get right. They're facing a left-hander for Boston,
- 2:25Speaker 2: so does that mean Montes takes a seat? Can you
- 2:28Speaker 2: put the iPads away and just go with your gut
- 2:31Speaker 2: and say, let's bring the kid back for another start, please,
- 2:34Speaker 2: after he just revitalized the dugout in the clubhouse? Please,
- 2:38Speaker 2: can we do that? Then after today, the team come
- 2:41Speaker 2: home for four against the A's. Start right away, no
- 2:43Speaker 2: day off. They play tomorrow night in the first game
- 2:45Speaker 2: of a four-game series. The Seahawks had their second of
- 2:48Speaker 2: three days off yesterday before they begin practicing for the
- 2:51Speaker 2: opener next Wednesday, a week from tonight at Lumen Field.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Fourth and fifth and final episode of Hard Knocks aired
- 2:57Speaker 2: last night. We'll detail what I found to be very interesting,
- 3:01Speaker 2: including from Nicky Manwari. Raiders and new coach Clint Kubiak
- 3:04Speaker 2: have named their starting quarterback to begin the season. It
- 3:07Speaker 2: is Kirk Cousins. Top rookie Fernando Mendoza is going to
- 3:11Speaker 2: have to wait and watch.
- 3:13Speaker 3: I think that's better for him, though.
- 3:14Speaker 7: It is.
- 3:15Speaker 2: It is. They should have done it. And everyone I
- 3:17Speaker 2: talked to, my Raider friends, knew a long time ago
- 3:19Speaker 2: it was going to be Cousins, and they just weren't
- 3:21Speaker 2: announcing it. Tiger Woods today had his driver's license suspended
- 3:25Speaker 2: five years after striking a plea deal in his DUI
- 3:27Speaker 2: case in Florida this morning. Woods pleaded no contest to
- 3:31Speaker 2: reduce charge of reckless driving, refusal to submit a lawful test.
- 3:35Speaker 2: That was in Martin County Circuit Court in Florida. The
- 3:37Speaker 2: plea agreement includes Woods paying $ 1, 500 in fines. He also
- 3:41Speaker 2: was found guilty of careless driving. Just a moving violation.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And former Husky star Quincy Pondexter, who I covered when
- 3:48Speaker 2: I was at UW and really enjoyed him.
- 3:50Speaker 3: I love Q.
- 3:51Speaker 2: He had, of course, been assistant coach on Danny Sprinkle's
- 3:53Speaker 2: staff of the UW men's basketball team. He's leaving UW.
- 3:57Speaker 2: He's going to become the new head coach of the
- 3:58Speaker 2: Windy City Bulls. Who are they? He's a G League
- 4:02Speaker 2: team outside Chicago for the Chicago Bulls. Quincy Pondexter's the
- 4:06Speaker 2: new head coach in the pro ranks. Now on for
- 4:09Speaker 2: the Wednesday show. Return of the Mag. Those of you
- 4:11Speaker 2: who listen to the show a long time know why.
- 4:13Speaker 3: We play that.
- 4:13Speaker 6: I have.
- 4:15Speaker 3: My people have talked to his people.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Oh, yes.
- 4:18Speaker 3: I'm a one-man band over here. No, you have people.
- 4:21Speaker 2: I've seen your people. I met your people. You have people,
- 4:23Speaker 2: for sure.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Wait, which people?
- 4:25Speaker 2: Your husband, for one.
- 4:26Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He's not people.
- 4:27Speaker 2: He's your people. Greg Bell and Justin McIntyre with you
- 4:30Speaker 2: every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And we can finally have a feel-good Mariner's Night to
- 4:37Speaker 2: talk about. Seems like it's been forever. What's that from?
- 4:42Speaker 9: Forever. Oh, come on.
- 4:44Speaker 3: That's a sandlot. Everybody knows that.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I hope so. Forever. You have to.
- 4:51Speaker 6: Do like the very teeth in the bottom lip, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 6: if you're going.
- 4:55Speaker 3: To say it right.
- 4:57Speaker 2: How can I have s'mores of something if I haven't
- 4:59Speaker 2: had anything yet?
- 5:00Speaker 3: Oh, you're killing me, s'mores.
- 5:01Speaker 2: S'more of what? S'more of what?
- 5:04Speaker 10: Oh, man.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Finally, a feel-good Mariners story. We get to talk about
- 5:08Speaker 2: Las Montes, all vibes last night. We'd also talk about
- 5:12Speaker 2: the final episode of Hard Knocks, some interesting behind-the-scenes moments,
- 5:16Speaker 2: including with Nicky Manwari and his head coach. At 1045,
- 5:20Speaker 2: we're going to discuss a new weekly segment we're going
- 5:22Speaker 2: to debut this Friday. Remember we talked about we're going
- 5:25Speaker 2: to do high school football featuring of games and coaches
- 5:28Speaker 2: and athletes and We're going to do that every Friday.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Our High School Football Friday is going to start on
- 5:33Speaker 2: this Friday, and we're going to feature a mammoth 4A
- 5:37Speaker 2: matchup here in the state. We'll talk about that at 1045.
- 5:41Speaker 2: 11 o'clock, 118th Apple Cup, you know, is Sunday. We're
- 5:44Speaker 2: going to go to Spokane and go to the Washington
- 5:46Speaker 2: State side of things after we talked to Dave Softy
- 5:48Speaker 2: Muller yesterday, which really turned into a pie-throwing contest between
- 5:53Speaker 2: the two sideline reporters, Jessamyn and For the Cougs and
- 5:57Speaker 2: Dave Sefty.
- 5:58Speaker 6: It's going to be a saloon showdown for sure. I
- 6:02Speaker 6: don't know what weapon he'll have.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, that slingshot maybe? Boomerang? Throw across the field and
- 6:08Speaker 2: bring it back?
- 6:09Speaker 6: A slingshot would make it a fair fight, to be honest.
- 6:14Speaker 2: 54 plus yards across the field. Could you hit him
- 6:15Speaker 2: with a slingshot 55 yards away?
- 6:17Speaker 3: Yeah, it just has to be one of the new ones.
- 6:20Speaker 6: The new slingshots they have these days, they're pretty good.
- 6:23Speaker 2: So you've got nephews and nieces and stuff.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah, we do a Christmas fight every year. My family's weird.
- 6:30Speaker 2: No, I think that's awesome. We're going to go to
- 6:33Speaker 2: Spokane 11 o'clock. We're going to talk to Greg Woods,
- 6:34Speaker 2: a friend of mine. We've had him on the show
- 6:36Speaker 2: many times. He's the beat writer of the Cougs for
- 6:38Speaker 2: the Spokesman Review. He's going to talk to us about
- 6:42Speaker 2: the misconception. You know this better than I, Jessamyn. The
- 6:45Speaker 2: misconception is the Cougs have to start over from ground
- 6:48Speaker 2: zero every single season. But they've got some people coming back.
- 6:52Speaker 2: They've got their leading rusher. They've got their leading receiver.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They've got a couple offensive linemen. We're going to talk
- 6:57Speaker 2: to Greg Woods about that. You have a new quarterback,
- 6:58Speaker 2: and you get all the attention, Caden Pinnock.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm pretty curious about him.
- 7:02Speaker 2: UC Davis transfer. We'll talk to Greg Woods at 11
- 7:06Speaker 2: o'clock about what the Huskies are going to be facing
- 7:08Speaker 2: on Sunday at the Apple Cup. 1 o'clock, of course,
- 7:11Speaker 2: at Husky Stadium right here live. The pregame show begins
- 7:14Speaker 2: at 9 a.m. Sunday right here on 93.3.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah, those guys are psychos.
- 7:18Speaker 2: What's wrong with them? Where will you be at 9 a.m.
- 7:21Speaker 2: before a 1 p.m.
- 7:22Speaker 6: Game?
- 7:22Speaker 3: Well, honestly, I would be at the game. I would
- 7:26Speaker 3: be in the stadium.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah. You're in that early?
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yes, usually.
- 7:30Speaker 6: Well, it depends on how far I have to travel,
- 7:33Speaker 6: but I don't have to travel very far this game. But, no,
- 7:38Speaker 6: I'll be there because we didn't have a spring game.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Everyone knows that, and I want to be present. I
- 7:46Speaker 6: want to be present.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I'll be there. about two hours before the buses come in.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Ah. Tessa McIntyre is the Washington State radio sideline broadcaster
- 7:56Speaker 2: during games, and Dave Softy-Maller is the University of Washington's
- 8:00Speaker 2: news sideline reporter, as Elise Woodward goes upstairs with Cam
- 8:03Speaker 2: Cleveland on the call Sunday, 1 p.m. right here on
- 8:06Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM, the 118th Apple Cup. 11.30, we'll read back
- 8:10Speaker 2: your text, your talkbacks. We had a ton of talkbacks
- 8:12Speaker 2: yesterday that made the missus happy. On the show.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I'm Greg's missus on the air.
- 8:18Speaker 2: My wife.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Not murses. I'm your miss.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Miss.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Work wife. Miss. Yeah, miss. My wife corrects me all
- 8:26Speaker 2: the time on that. Not missus. And she hates people
- 8:29Speaker 2: to say Mrs.
- 8:29Speaker 11: Bell.
- 8:30Speaker 2: It's miss. She wants her own.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I didn't change my name when I got married.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You did not. And my wife was wrestling with that
- 8:38Speaker 2: in her medical professional world. She was known as Savoy,
- 8:41Speaker 2: her maiden name. Oh, that's a really good name. It's
- 8:44Speaker 2: a very elegant, yes. And it's an Italian, Northern Italian name.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And yeah, we actually had many discussions about that.
- 8:53Speaker 3: I think I got- Bell isn't a bad.
- 8:54Speaker 8: Name, though.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Well, yeah, one syllable. I got the name and she
- 8:57Speaker 2: got the vegetarian household and can't have meat in the house, so.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I think that's how that works.
- 9:01Speaker 3: That is quite the negotiation.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yeah, we did talk about it. 49451, that's coming out
- 9:09Speaker 2: of Texas. And the first question I have for you is,
- 9:11Speaker 2: Laz Montes, is he the messiah, the savior, the season saver?
- 9:16Speaker 2: Can he do it in 23 games? Can he inject
- 9:19Speaker 2: the life that this lifeless team needs, wants, must have?
- 9:25Speaker 2: Can he play every day? We're going to find out
- 9:26Speaker 2: today if he's going to play against left-handers. He's a
- 9:30Speaker 2: left-handed batter, of course. We'll find out if Laz Monte
- 9:33Speaker 2: says there's enough time with 23 games left. This was
- 9:36Speaker 2: him talking to Brad Adam on Mariners TV last night.
- 9:39Speaker 2: I mean, he was just effervescent. You could almost hear
- 9:42Speaker 2: it through the radio last night on Mariners TV.
- 9:44Speaker 8: Here with the man of the hour, of course, making
- 9:46Speaker 8: his major league debut. Soak this all in, right? What
- 9:52Speaker 8: has this been like for you and your family? A
- 9:55Speaker 8: dream come true for you last night?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:59Speaker 11: Everything, man.
- 10:00Speaker 12: Like, this is better than that dream, man. This is
- 10:04Speaker 12: better than that dream.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Believe me.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Okay, tell me about your night. An RBI single. And
- 10:10Speaker 8: then you've got, of course, your first home run. A
- 10:12Speaker 8: little hanging slider. Did you think it was gone off
- 10:15Speaker 8: the bat?
- 10:15Speaker 12: Man, I hit that ball and I just run. I
- 10:19Speaker 12: knew that I hit it very, very good. But, you know,
- 10:22Speaker 12: I run, run, and that was a special moment. time
- 10:27Speaker 12: for me, special moment for me, man.
- 10:30Speaker 9: You get the ball back.
- 10:31Speaker 8: We talked to the fans who caught that ball, and
- 10:33Speaker 8: then you almost knock over your third base coach, Carlos Cardoza.
- 10:38Speaker 2: What was that like?
- 10:38Speaker 12: Yeah, I said, I said, hey, we need, hey, but
- 10:42Speaker 12: before I said, like, when I hit a homer, we
- 10:45Speaker 12: need to jump like a basketball. So right through that,
- 10:50Speaker 12: it came into my mind and we did it. But
- 10:53Speaker 12: I said, we need to practice that. I made sure
- 10:56Speaker 12: that you jump better than that.
- 10:57Speaker 9: He needs to jump better and you need to practice that.
- 10:59Speaker 8: Then you come in, you get the trident, and you
- 11:02Speaker 8: and Randy play a little guitar.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 9: Now, was that improvised? Do you play guitar? Did you
- 11:07Speaker 9: plan that?
- 11:08Speaker 12: I say I buy a guitar, but I don't know
- 11:10Speaker 12: how to play it, man.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Neither does Randy.
- 11:12Speaker 9: That's okay. And the Rock, Paper, Scissors, you won on that, too.
- 11:15Speaker 11: I won it.
- 11:16Speaker 8: 2-1.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I won it.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Always positive, man.
- 11:19Speaker 8: Hey, congratulations on the debut. This is fantastic. I'm so
- 11:23Speaker 8: glad that your wife and son are here as well.
- 11:26Speaker 8: And look forward to more home runs, more interviews, my friend.
- 11:29Speaker 9: Let's do it.
- 11:29Speaker 11: Let's do it.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I'm happy, yeah. Can we have more of that, please?
- 11:34Speaker 3: Just the joy.
- 11:35Speaker 10: Right.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Just the joy.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Of this entire soul-sucking season the Mariners have had. Can
- 11:40Speaker 2: we have more of that?
- 11:42Speaker 6: I mean, that's what September brings you, though.
- 11:44Speaker 3: That's right. Because we get him.
- 11:46Speaker 2: The September call-ups. The roster expanding by two. That's why
- 11:49Speaker 2: Laz Montes was in the lineup last night as a
- 11:51Speaker 2: designated hitter. I'm really curious to see this lineup today
- 11:55Speaker 2: with the Red Sox throwing a lefty. A 1-10 start.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Our time. I want to see him. Montes should be
- 12:01Speaker 2: in it. Don't give me this lefty handedness, righty lefty. No, no,
- 12:07Speaker 2: don't do it. But I bet they're going to. I
- 12:10Speaker 2: bet they're going to do lefty righty rookie in the
- 12:12Speaker 2: second game. Don't put him up against the lefty. Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Come on. Throw away the iPads. Just trust your gut.
- 12:19Speaker 11: Look at your eyes.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Look what he did last night. Just get him out
- 12:21Speaker 2: there again. If he goes 0 for 4, so what?
- 12:24Speaker 6: Baseball has always been a joyous sport for me. It
- 12:27Speaker 6: has always been something that just brings me joy, probably
- 12:30Speaker 6: because I don't work in it regularly. I mean, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 6: it's a full-time job. I do go down and I
- 12:37Speaker 6: do cover, but it's not my full-time. And I just
- 12:42Speaker 6: take so much joy in the sport and to hear Laz...
- 12:47Speaker 6: have so much joy and appreciation in the way he
- 12:51Speaker 6: taught to Brad and Brad did a phenomenal job with that.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And noticing every little anecdote of the scene and bringing
- 12:58Speaker 2: it out of them. You're right. I will say one
- 13:00Speaker 2: thing about Brad though. He kind of sold Monte short,
- 13:03Speaker 2: calling it a hanging slider. That pitch was low and in,
- 13:06Speaker 2: and he dropped his bat down to get it and
- 13:09Speaker 2: to hit it as hard as he did for where
- 13:11Speaker 2: that pitch was. That wasn't a hanging meatball. If you
- 13:14Speaker 2: go back and look at that, tell me if I'm wrong,
- 13:17Speaker 2: but that was not a grooved hanging slider. That was
- 13:21Speaker 2: low and in, and he dropped his bat. And I
- 13:24Speaker 2: was just stunned at how quickly the ball went out
- 13:27Speaker 2: because of where it was pitched. That was... Yeah. I'm
- 13:31Speaker 2: just nitpicking Brad. He's a great friend of mine. But yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I just want to say... His hair looked great. As always,
- 13:38Speaker 2: of course. As always. But yeah, that was Montes. I
- 13:41Speaker 2: told Chuck this morning... Man, why didn't they bring him
- 13:43Speaker 2: up sooner? Just, I get it. You don't want to
- 13:47Speaker 2: rush a guy. Cold Emerson, that whole thing has been
- 13:50Speaker 2: a disaster. But, man, they could have had that energy
- 13:55Speaker 2: the entire summer. Will you imagine what a superstar he'd
- 13:57Speaker 2: be in Seattle right now?
- 13:59Speaker 3: He already is. It only took one night.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Imagine if he'd been doing this for three months.
- 14:04Speaker 3: But would he? Would he be doing it for three months?
- 14:06Speaker 2: Well, his personality would not change, I wouldn't think.
- 14:09Speaker 6: I don't, but the pressure is real, and I think
- 14:13Speaker 6: they take that into account.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Stick him in right field, put Robles in center, and
- 14:17Speaker 2: let Julio Rodriguez sit a little bit for the antics
- 14:19Speaker 2: and the things he's done. That's what they should do.
- 14:22Speaker 2: But they won't. But that's really what they should do.
- 14:25Speaker 2: A little bit of accountability, a little bit of rewarding
- 14:27Speaker 2: the here and now and who's performing and who's producing
- 14:31Speaker 2: and who is just changing the vibe of of the season.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I mean, that road trip just U-turned last night. It
- 14:39Speaker 2: didn't fix everything, but it, I mean, they still got
- 14:42Speaker 2: a road to hoe here in the last 23 games,
- 14:44Speaker 2: but they do, but at least there's something to look
- 14:47Speaker 2: forward to. And then he's don't sit him today. Just don't,
- 14:50Speaker 2: just don't sit him. I just, I know why they would.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I know the left and you lefty lefty. You don't
- 14:54Speaker 2: want to do that.
- 14:55Speaker 3: We will keep an eye on the lineup.
- 14:57Speaker 10: 21 year old.
- 14:57Speaker 3: As soon as they come around.
- 15:00Speaker 2: I know.
- 15:01Speaker 3: I got it.
- 15:02Speaker 11: I got it.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Four, nine, four, five, one. If you're with me, more Montes, please.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I used to be more Ryan Bliss, please, which I
- 15:08Speaker 2: still think they could use him, too, speaking of energy
- 15:10Speaker 2: and a dimension they don't have. But I'll take Montes.
- 15:13Speaker 2: I'll take Montes on any day of the week. The
- 15:16Speaker 2: other thing that's interesting at play here, there are major
- 15:19Speaker 2: league prospects around. I heard Chuck talking about this yesterday.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And because I have family still in Cleveland and there
- 15:25Speaker 2: used to be Indian slash Guardian season ticket holders and
- 15:29Speaker 2: still go to a ton of games, they know about
- 15:30Speaker 2: this kid. the top prospect in the guardian system that
- 15:34Speaker 2: they are not calling up because they don't want to
- 15:36Speaker 2: put him on the 40-man roster. Why? Because baseball is
- 15:39Speaker 2: convinced there's going to be a lockout to begin next season.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And if you put somebody on the 40-man roster, he
- 15:44Speaker 2: wouldn't be able to play next year. If you keep
- 15:48Speaker 2: him off of the 40-man roster, he would be able
- 15:49Speaker 2: to play a minor league season if there's a lockout
- 15:51Speaker 2: of major league players. And if you put him on
- 15:53Speaker 2: the 40-man roster for this season and try to take
- 15:55Speaker 2: him off, he could be subject to waivers and somebody
- 15:57Speaker 2: claim him. So basically, They are keeping their top prospect
- 16:02Speaker 2: at the AAA level perhaps to play next year. So
- 16:06Speaker 2: his clock doesn't start in his contract, all that stuff. Meanwhile,
- 16:09Speaker 2: Cleveland's in a playoff race. They're holding a wild card
- 16:12Speaker 2: spot currently with an offense that has been really bad
- 16:15Speaker 2: all season. Not quite feast or famine Mariners bad, but
- 16:18Speaker 2: they've been bad on offense for a couple of years now.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But that is a specter here. It doesn't seem to have,
- 16:24Speaker 2: obviously the Mariners didn't think that about Las Montes, but
- 16:27Speaker 2: Some people around Major League Baseball are making those choices
- 16:30Speaker 2: with prospects to not bring them up for the specter
- 16:33Speaker 2: of a lockout next year. It's just yet another piece
- 16:37Speaker 2: to baseball. And you know what? While I'm speaking of it,
- 16:41Speaker 2: it also makes it even more infuriating that the Mariners
- 16:44Speaker 2: aren't running away with the AL West and winning it
- 16:46Speaker 2: now and winning– getting to the World Series now. There
- 16:49Speaker 2: may not even be baseball next year and you're never
- 16:51Speaker 2: going to have a division this poor again. Win now
- 16:54Speaker 2: because there may not be a tomorrow. You might have
- 16:56Speaker 2: to wait a long time for tomorrow. The fact that
- 16:59Speaker 2: they're squandering this season in particular with a specter of
- 17:03Speaker 2: the strike or lockout of the labor impasse because owners
- 17:06Speaker 2: want to put a salary cap in a sport that
- 17:08Speaker 2: hasn't had one since the 1970s when it first to
- 17:10Speaker 2: have unfettered free agency. Thank you, Kurt Flood. But on
- 17:16Speaker 2: top of it, to squander the opportunity of such a
- 17:18Speaker 2: poor league and poor division and Yeah, I go back
- 17:21Speaker 2: to it. Let's just keep talking about Las Montes. That's
- 17:23Speaker 2: much more pleasant to talk about.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Okay, let's listen to this again because it was super fun.
- 17:27Speaker 8: Here with the man of the hour, of course, making
- 17:29Speaker 8: his major league debut. Soak this all in, right? What
- 17:34Speaker 8: has this been like for you and your family? A
- 17:38Speaker 8: dream come true for you last night?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, actually, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 17:42Speaker 11: Everything, man.
- 17:43Speaker 12: Like, this is better than that dream, man. This is
- 17:47Speaker 12: better than that dream.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Believe me.
- 17:49Speaker 8: Okay, tell me about your night. An RBI single, and
- 17:52Speaker 8: then you've got, of course, your first.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Thank you. It's just so good. I got to say
- 17:58Speaker 2: something on the text line. I have to. I have to.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 18:03Speaker 2: I know we read back text at 1130. Are you? Yes,
- 18:05Speaker 2: I'm going to.
- 18:06Speaker 9: Okay.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Because this is just ignorant. The 206. The back and
- 18:13Speaker 2: forth banner is getting old. It's really forced.
- 18:15Speaker 10: Yikes.
- 18:16Speaker 2: So formally at the beginning of the show here, it's
- 18:18Speaker 2: completely unnatural. Both of you. With Chris, it wasn't. Now
- 18:22Speaker 2: it is. Just saying. Hey, just saying. Jessamyn and I
- 18:26Speaker 2: have known each other for years. We have spent weekends.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Well before we've worked together.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Well before we've worked together. We've spent many weekends, many
- 18:34Speaker 2: pretty fun weekends on the East Coast at the Army-Navy
- 18:38Speaker 2: game in Washington, D.C. Before I even worked here, we
- 18:40Speaker 2: did that. In Philadelphia, in Boston, on the sidelines. We've
- 18:45Speaker 2: partied together. It ain't forced.
- 18:47Speaker 3: With both of your children, actually.
- 18:50Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:51Speaker 2: And our spouses.
- 18:52Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:52Speaker 2: It is not forced. And I'm sorry it comes off
- 18:55Speaker 2: that way. I didn't think it comes off that way.
- 18:56Speaker 3: I didn't either. But maybe somebody just needs a little education.
- 19:00Speaker 2: But just to let you know, just to let you know,
- 19:02Speaker 2: I actually have a longer standing relationship both socially and
- 19:06Speaker 2: professionally with Jessamyn than I do with Chris. Than I
- 19:08Speaker 2: did with Chris and still do with Chris. But, no.
- 19:12Speaker 2: I'm sorry. I'll take exception to that.
- 19:14Speaker 3: I will cool my... heat a little bit if that's
- 19:18Speaker 3: i don't know what.
- 19:19Speaker 2: It is you don't have to do you have to
- 19:21Speaker 2: change a thing it's you and i just talking and.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Yeah the reason why everyone's gonna.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Have an opinion okay if you want to know how
- 19:28Speaker 2: the satchis is made the reason why we start the
- 19:30Speaker 2: show this way is because i want to keep the
- 19:33Speaker 2: beat the first segment open-ended so that we can discuss
- 19:36Speaker 2: whatever's on our minds and what are the reaction from
- 19:38Speaker 2: the previous day's events or what have you And then
- 19:42Speaker 2: I do, Jessamyn knows this, I pretty much script out
- 19:44Speaker 2: the rest of the show of here's the subjects I
- 19:46Speaker 2: want to cover verbatim. And here's how we're going to
- 19:48Speaker 2: do it. And I've rarely leave some wiggle room. But
- 19:52Speaker 2: the very first segment, I do have some, I want
- 19:54Speaker 2: to keep wiggle room for just this. So it's actually
- 19:56Speaker 2: the opposite of forced. I keep it open-ended so it
- 20:00Speaker 2: can be somewhat conversational. And anyway.
- 20:04Speaker 3: And I like that. But maybe I'm just the idiot here.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I should not be, I guess. shining light on maybe
- 20:11Speaker 2: a vocal minority of saying it, but I just wanted
- 20:13Speaker 2: to point out that they're, yeah, nevermind. I'm not going
- 20:17Speaker 2: to say any more about that, but that's the reason
- 20:19Speaker 2: we do what we do.
- 20:19Speaker 6: We have some people pushing back on that opinion. So
- 20:24Speaker 6: I'm just going to leave that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 20:26Speaker 11: It's fine.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Pushing back on the negative.
- 20:30Speaker 2: And 206 is trying to do his or her opinion.
- 20:33Speaker 3: I will say, thank you for listening.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I will also say that I make it a point
- 20:38Speaker 2: to try to involve Jess. Jessamyn, a lot of show
- 20:42Speaker 2: hosts here don't involve their producer. They just, they don't.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Producer produces and runs. I don't want that. I don't
- 20:49Speaker 2: want to sit in here for two hours by myself
- 20:51Speaker 2: and talk to myself. I do that in the shower.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I don't need to do that two hours on a
- 20:56Speaker 2: radio program in the 12th largest market in the country.
- 20:58Speaker 3: That was really pulling back the curtain. I'm just saying.
- 21:02Speaker 11: I don't need to talk to myself.
- 21:03Speaker 3: What I would just say is thank you for listening.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Of course.
- 21:06Speaker 11: Thank you for listening.
- 21:07Speaker 6: We will not always be everyone's cup of tea. And
- 21:11Speaker 6: nothing is for us on this show.
- 21:13Speaker 3: We are friends.
- 21:13Speaker 2: And we ain't making you listen either. You can change
- 21:16Speaker 2: the channel. I don't care. But add date. Same reason
- 21:19Speaker 2: I play Return of the Bat. My show, my song.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I just, for my daughter. But hey, the Hard Knocks
- 21:24Speaker 2: was last night and there were some things beyond the
- 21:27Speaker 2: entertainment value of it. There were some interesting little tidbits,
- 21:30Speaker 2: including Nicky Manwari and Mike McDonald's office. We all saw
- 21:34Speaker 2: Dino's Pub and we all knew John Schneider hangs out
- 21:37Speaker 2: there and he's got a stool and always a place there.
- 21:39Speaker 2: But there are some other things beyond that. We're going
- 21:42Speaker 2: to talk about the Hard Knocks episode, what you thought
- 21:44Speaker 2: of it, what you thought about the whole series. 49451,
- 21:47Speaker 2: we'll read that back at 1130. The 118th Apple Cup
- 21:50Speaker 2: will take the stage at 11 o'clock when we talk
- 21:52Speaker 2: to Greg Woods of the Spokesman Review. And we'll just
- 21:55Speaker 2: keep talking about Las Montes in between because, man, like
- 21:58Speaker 2: I said, the vibes changed last night with the rookie
- 22:00Speaker 2: coming up. We'll keep an eye on whether he's in
- 22:02Speaker 2: the lineup today when the Mariners play the Red Sox
- 22:04Speaker 2: in the finale of the road trip. All that's coming up.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Thanks for listening, even those who don't like us, on
- 22:09Speaker 2: 93.3 KJR.
- 22:10Speaker 3: You're listening.
- 22:12Speaker 2: We appreciate that. We'll be back on 93.3 KJR. Welcome back.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you on 93.3 KJR FM
- 22:55Speaker 2: here from Seattle and in Boston. Can we just put
- 23:03Speaker 2: away the iPads and the handedness? They finally have vibes.
- 23:07Speaker 2: They finally have a dude who's injecting some positivity and
- 23:10Speaker 2: some fun into this season. And they put Laz Montes
- 23:15Speaker 2: on the bench because he's left-handed and they're facing a
- 23:16Speaker 2: left-handed pitcher for the Red Sox. Even if he went 0-4,
- 23:24Speaker 2: so what? The whole lineup's going to go 0-4. Put
- 23:27Speaker 2: him in the lineup. It's just ridiculous. They cannot help themselves.
- 23:33Speaker 2: This hand in this iPad analytics-driven decision-making is just maddening.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Trust your eyes. What you saw last night, the feelings
- 23:41Speaker 2: you saw, the feelings you had in the dugout, air
- 23:44Speaker 2: guitaring with– how many times did you see Randy or
- 23:46Speaker 2: Rose Arena have that much fun in the.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Middle of the game? I mean, that was good vibes.
- 23:49Speaker 6: It was.
- 23:49Speaker 2: It was Suarez-like. And now you're going to say, okay, kids,
- 23:52Speaker 2: thanks for last night. Sit the bench and watch today.
- 23:54Speaker 2: While the rest of the lineup goes 0 for 4
- 23:56Speaker 2: like you might have. So what? It just– man. At
- 24:03Speaker 2: this point, you reap what you sow. You're going to
- 24:05Speaker 2: miss the playoffs because you do stuff like this.
- 24:07Speaker 11: It just– yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Okay.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Let's go back to the team I covered, the Seahawks.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Wait, you cover all the teams.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I haven't been in the Mariners clubhouse in a month
- 24:18Speaker 2: or so because the Mariners, a couple months actually because
- 24:20Speaker 2: of the Seahawks season beginning. Neil Kozla, by the way,
- 24:24Speaker 2: the son of the triumvirate new ownership of the Kozla family,
- 24:28Speaker 2: a father and mother both in their 70s and the
- 24:31Speaker 2: son in their late 30s. The son, just like his father,
- 24:35Speaker 2: took to social media this morning saying one week until
- 24:38Speaker 2: the Seahawks play football. They are out front on this
- 24:43Speaker 2: social media stuff. Vinod Khosla just responds to everything.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I love it.
- 24:48Speaker 2: It's so different than the Allen regime.
- 24:50Speaker 3: It's just so transparent.
- 24:52Speaker 4: It is.
- 24:52Speaker 13: Yes.
- 24:53Speaker 2: It is so different than the Allens who just stayed
- 24:56Speaker 2: in the back. Now, I saw Paul Allen quite a
- 24:57Speaker 2: bit in the locker rooms, on road trips, in the stadium.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But I, and at times at the facility, Jody Allen,
- 25:06Speaker 2: much less so. She was much less of a, she
- 25:09Speaker 2: was in behind the scenes. I only saw her at
- 25:11Speaker 2: practices once a season, maybe during training camp once a year.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And that's about it. She was involved, but she was
- 25:18Speaker 2: not front facing at all.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I also appreciate that.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Yes.
- 25:22Speaker 6: Yeah. You know, like when when people are open and
- 25:25Speaker 6: out and very recognizable as the face of a franchise,
- 25:30Speaker 6: that's one thing.
- 25:31Speaker 3: And you appreciate that.
- 25:33Speaker 6: However, I appreciated them putting people in the right position
- 25:37Speaker 6: to do their jobs.
- 25:38Speaker 3: And staying out of it.
- 25:39Speaker 2: And trust the football people to do football stuff. And
- 25:41Speaker 2: it obviously has worked wonders winning the first two Super
- 25:43Speaker 2: Bowls ever. Well, last night, the fifth and final episode
- 25:47Speaker 2: of the Hard Knocks, they did cover the Kozler family's vote.
- 25:50Speaker 2: They had a crew and camera crew in Atlanta for
- 25:52Speaker 2: the vote. And Kozler's, Vinod Kozler's first comments publicly after
- 25:57Speaker 2: the approval. The sale is still not official-ficial. They have
- 26:00Speaker 2: to have the, as we've been talking about, the lawyers
- 26:02Speaker 2: and the bankers involved. process the $ 9. 6 billion transaction. Once
- 26:06Speaker 2: that goes through the banking and the lawyers vetting, then
- 26:09Speaker 2: they become official. And then we're expecting to have a
- 26:11Speaker 2: press conference at Lumen Field, perhaps next week after the
- 26:14Speaker 2: Labor Day holiday, perhaps even the day of the game,
- 26:17Speaker 2: the opener of the NFL kickoff game a week from
- 26:19Speaker 2: tonight against New England. Last night, Dino's Pub got a
- 26:23Speaker 2: lot of national... Those of us around here, and especially
- 26:25Speaker 2: those of us who cover the Seahawks, know all about
- 26:26Speaker 2: Dino's Pub.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I've spent a year or two in there one night.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah. And it is an extension of Seahawks headquarters. A
- 26:33Speaker 2: lot of business gets done there, including hiring the offensive coordinator,
- 26:35Speaker 2: Ryan Grubb, a couple seasons ago. A couple winters ago.
- 26:38Speaker 3: That got a little public.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Remember that? Fans were just taking videos and pictures of
- 26:44Speaker 2: Grubb there with John Schneider. And yes, of course, and
- 26:48Speaker 2: Mike McDonald, but So that was one thing that caught
- 26:51Speaker 2: everybody's attention. Mike McDonald has become a national star in
- 26:54Speaker 2: this month of Hard Knocks episode. Chuck was asking me
- 26:57Speaker 2: this morning, wow, his leadership. And I had to chuckle
- 27:01Speaker 2: because I see it every day and I try to,
- 27:03Speaker 2: I don't do a good job enough, I guess, of
- 27:04Speaker 2: portraying and writing about it. But all the things we
- 27:09Speaker 2: watched on Hard Knocks, I've seen. Now, I'm not in
- 27:11Speaker 2: his office. He doesn't let me in there. But the
- 27:14Speaker 2: leadership principles, the empathy, the vulnerability piece, we have talked
- 27:18Speaker 2: about that. None of it is a surprise to me,
- 27:20Speaker 2: but now everyone's seeing it and go, wow, this Mike McDonald,
- 27:22Speaker 2: that's how he's been for three years. And I've seen it.
- 27:25Speaker 2: We've seen it. Those of us that are out there
- 27:26Speaker 2: every day and is what has set the culture for
- 27:29Speaker 2: the Seahawks for sure. I thought also it was interesting.
- 27:33Speaker 2: I know if you caught this, Jessamyn, if you saw
- 27:35Speaker 2: the episode or those of you listening caught this. Trevon Diggs,
- 27:40Speaker 2: his position coach now, Carl Scott, was his position coach
- 27:44Speaker 2: at Alabama and And there's a scene in last night's
- 27:47Speaker 2: episode that Carl Scott is in the meeting defensive backs
- 27:50Speaker 2: room showing Diggs his practice footage from Alabama. Did you
- 27:54Speaker 2: notice that?
- 27:56Speaker 6: I did, but I didn't really watch it back and
- 28:00Speaker 6: really break it down.
- 28:02Speaker 2: That was a position defensive backs turn and catch the
- 28:06Speaker 2: ball at its highest point drill from Alabama. They were
- 28:08Speaker 2: wearing crimson shirts. The Seahawks don't do that. Cowboys don't
- 28:12Speaker 2: do that where Diggs played before. The Packers don't do
- 28:14Speaker 2: that where Diggs played before. Those are his college practice
- 28:16Speaker 2: films that Scott was showing him as a confidence builder
- 28:20Speaker 2: and making him comfortable here in Seattle and making him say, hey,
- 28:24Speaker 2: remember this? This is when you first started. This is
- 28:26Speaker 2: how you became an All-Pro with the Cowboys in 2021.
- 28:27Speaker 2: That's interesting. It was a really interesting way to get
- 28:31Speaker 2: him to be comfortable and say, remember this, and get
- 28:34Speaker 2: him in a frame of mind of when he was
- 28:35Speaker 2: at his best. He hasn't played an entire NFL season
- 28:39Speaker 2: since 2022 because of a myriad injuries. But Carl Scott
- 28:43Speaker 2: was reminding him, hey, this is how you– I've seen this.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I've coached this. I was here. I watched this. This
- 28:49Speaker 2: was the start of it. Really, I thought a creative
- 28:52Speaker 2: way to get Diggs, one, to buy into the culture
- 28:55Speaker 2: and the setting here and to be comfortable. But two,
- 28:58Speaker 2: you know that Carl Scott and the coaching staff realized
- 29:01Speaker 2: they were probably going to cut Diggs last week. And
- 29:05Speaker 2: they wanted him to come back. So that was part
- 29:08Speaker 2: of a sell job. I'm being a little bit cynical here,
- 29:11Speaker 2: but there's no doubt.
- 29:13Speaker 3: That they're always doing three jobs at once.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Exactly. They're always coaching today, tomorrow, and the next day.
- 29:19Speaker 2: And they knew that they had to put a sell
- 29:21Speaker 2: job on Diggs. They got him into the game Friday,
- 29:25Speaker 2: started him, interception, took him out as soon as it
- 29:28Speaker 2: was interception, let him hang with the bros and the
- 29:30Speaker 2: veteran starters to feel like one of the guys. That
- 29:32Speaker 2: was intentional. Leonard Williams and Ernest Jones running down the sideline.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Dante Fowler. It was an awesome place. They always do anyway. Well,
- 29:41Speaker 2: the ball was thrown right to him. But anyway.
- 29:43Speaker 3: But he was in the right spot.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Yes, he was. He undercut the receiver. But the veterans
- 29:48Speaker 2: running down the sidelines with him, very, very intentional. And
- 29:52Speaker 2: I asked Diggs about it after the game, and he said, absolutely,
- 29:55Speaker 2: I noticed that. It made me feel at home. It
- 29:56Speaker 2: made me feel like one of the guys, exactly what
- 29:58Speaker 2: they intended. Carl Scott doing that film session from Alabama
- 30:02Speaker 2: with him. It was like nostalgia for Diggs. I'm sure
- 30:06Speaker 2: he appreciated that. And it reestablished a connection with Carl Scott.
- 30:11Speaker 2: And so when it came time to say, hey, here's
- 30:13Speaker 2: what we're going to do. And you saw the scene
- 30:15Speaker 2: last night. The McDonald's said, are you cool with what
- 30:16Speaker 2: we're going to do? You know the plan we're going
- 30:18Speaker 2: to do, right? We're going to cut you. It's probably
- 30:20Speaker 2: going to make national news that we're cutting you because
- 30:22Speaker 2: now you're an unrestricted free agent. But please come back
- 30:25Speaker 2: and do this practice squad plan because we're just going
- 30:27Speaker 2: to use the practice squad to ramp you up without
- 30:28Speaker 2: having to use a roster spot. And that's what they did.
- 30:32Speaker 2: And they spent the entire week, including in that Carl
- 30:35Speaker 2: Scott scene with the Alabama film, greasing the skids to
- 30:38Speaker 2: make that move so he would be amenable to doing it.
- 30:41Speaker 2: And he was. Unlike Cody White, who signed instead with
- 30:46Speaker 2: Clint Kubiak's practice squad of the Raiders. What was interesting
- 30:49Speaker 2: last night, the 70, right? And we talk about this
- 30:52Speaker 2: all the time. The Seahawks call it a 70, the
- 30:55Speaker 2: 17-man practice squad on top of the 53. And there
- 30:58Speaker 2: will be NFL teams and executives watching that and say,
- 31:01Speaker 2: maybe we should have changed how we approach cut day.
- 31:04Speaker 2: That sounds pretty inclusive the way they did it. But
- 31:06Speaker 2: having said, and of course, Hard Knocks went hard on
- 31:08Speaker 2: that and they should have. But that was also selective
- 31:11Speaker 2: editing because remember, there were 91 players in the training camp, right?
- 31:16Speaker 2: And they only kept 70, all of which 17 on
- 31:19Speaker 2: the practice squad, all were on the training camp roster.
- 31:22Speaker 2: But that means 21 dudes didn't get that treatment. And
- 31:25Speaker 2: 21 dudes that were in training camp watched that episode
- 31:28Speaker 2: last night going, I didn't have that experience. I didn't
- 31:31Speaker 2: have that 70.
- 31:32Speaker 3: But we don't know.
- 31:33Speaker 2: I got pink slipped. They said, you're done. And they
- 31:36Speaker 2: didn't invite me back.
- 31:37Speaker 3: I mean, we don't know what treatment they had, though.
- 31:41Speaker 11: No.
- 31:41Speaker 2: And they always say hard knocks.
- 31:43Speaker 3: You know, they get the splashy things.
- 31:46Speaker 2: And they always tell the players, hey, we'd love to
- 31:48Speaker 2: have you back. We hope it works out. Yeah.
- 31:51Speaker 9: Sure.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But Nick Vanette's gone. They didn't invite him back.
- 31:55Speaker 13: To the roster.
- 31:56Speaker 3: That was a little bit of a bummer.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Jordan Washington, Amari Kite, Rashad Rochelle, those guys didn't get
- 32:01Speaker 2: to practice quite. So they had a completely different experience.
- 32:04Speaker 2: My point is, yeah, the Seahawks have a new way
- 32:07Speaker 2: of calling it 70 and maybe it's innovative and– But
- 32:10Speaker 2: it comes down to brass tacks. There's still cutting to
- 32:12Speaker 2: be done, and it's still ruthless, and it's still a
- 32:14Speaker 2: cold business. Hard Knocks just didn't show that.
- 32:16Speaker 3: 90 to 70.
- 32:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:18Speaker 6: Well, technically 53, but then 70. Right.
- 32:22Speaker 3: Yeah. And people have to clear waivers.
- 32:25Speaker 2: Well, while they talk to guys about, hey, we're going
- 32:28Speaker 2: to bring you back, and Ricky White, we're going to
- 32:30Speaker 2: have you come back. You've got to be like Jake
- 32:31Speaker 2: Bobo for us. You've got to do more than just catch.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It was interesting when McDonald said, we're paying guys $ 44
- 32:36Speaker 2: million to catch the ball. We need you to do
- 32:39Speaker 2: everything else. We need you to block on the edge.
- 32:41Speaker 2: We need you to play special team. We need you
- 32:42Speaker 2: to be what Jake Bobo has been for us.
- 32:44Speaker 3: I was just going to say Bobo was a.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Pretty good blocker. McDonald said that verbatim to Ricky White.
- 32:50Speaker 2: And the point to White was don't just focus on
- 32:52Speaker 2: being a wide receiver. We're paying guys $ 44 million a
- 32:54Speaker 2: year to do that. And Jackson Smith and Jigba. And
- 32:58Speaker 2: Cooper Cupp and Rasheed Shahid. But my point is there
- 33:02Speaker 2: were 21 other dudes who didn't have that experience and
- 33:04Speaker 2: had a more cutthroat, pink slip, you're gone experience.
- 33:07Speaker 3: I mean, the league is brutal.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Of course it is.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 2: But while we would like to think that the Seahawks
- 33:13Speaker 2: do things differently and innovatively in a very compassionate way
- 33:16Speaker 2: in the 70s and all that, and that's true, let's
- 33:20Speaker 2: not forget it. I'm just saying, there's 21 other dudes
- 33:22Speaker 2: who don't feel that way at all, and it's still
- 33:23Speaker 2: very a cold business to them because they're no longer
- 33:25Speaker 2: Seahawks and they were not invited back.
- 33:27Speaker 6: Yeah, but then you can go to a 24-hour fitness
- 33:29Speaker 6: and find a high school quarterback to throw to you.
- 33:33Speaker 2: That's exactly what Montori Foster did. And this last night
- 33:37Speaker 2: was his phone call, the first phone call he made
- 33:39Speaker 2: when he found out he made the team.
- 33:41Speaker 10: I was about to say, you're not going to answer
- 33:44Speaker 10: my phone, bro?
- 33:45Speaker 2: My phone call?
- 33:46Speaker 9: That's crazy.
- 33:49Speaker 2: This is crazy, man. I can't believe.
- 33:53Speaker 11: I'm crying right now.
- 33:55Speaker 9: Oh, my goodness.
- 33:57Speaker 10: It really didn't hit me yet. I'm still kind of
- 33:59Speaker 10: feeling like I'm dreaming. I'm like, y'all know the whole journey.
- 34:03Speaker 10: Everything just going undrafted and just having that night.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Like, that was the worst night of my life.
- 34:09Speaker 10: But I just kept working and, shoot, now we here.
- 34:11Speaker 10: And we just on the come up for real. So,
- 34:13Speaker 10: just got to keep going. Yeah, then dad.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Dad just so delusional, man.
- 34:18Speaker 11: He.
- 34:19Speaker 2: He helped me so much.
- 34:20Speaker 10: Like him just talking to me all the time and
- 34:23Speaker 10: just keeping my spirits up. I feel like that I
- 34:27Speaker 10: appreciate you for everything for real. Like you really like
- 34:32Speaker 10: helped me so much just to stay in it for
- 34:34Speaker 10: real and to keep grinding. Like all the work is
- 34:39Speaker 10: like paying off. I'm trying not to cry. Like now
- 34:41Speaker 10: it's hitting me a little bit, but.
- 34:43Speaker 6: That's fine. It's joy to you. It's joy.
- 34:44Speaker 14: Yes.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Man, that's crazy. I did it. I did it. Montori
- 34:54Speaker 2: Foster Jr. calling back home to Cleveland to his mom
- 34:57Speaker 2: and dad, sitting on the dock of the bay so much.
- 35:00Speaker 2: He was right next to Lake Washington on the dock
- 35:02Speaker 2: that's right outside the Seahawks facility.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Which we got to be at.
- 35:06Speaker 2: On Sunday, right after he found out he had made
- 35:08Speaker 2: the team. And yes, I see the text line. Diggs
- 35:11Speaker 2: did say he was not quite ready. But it wasn't
- 35:14Speaker 2: so much the shape, in football shape, that he didn't
- 35:16Speaker 2: think he was ready. McDonald asked him, point blank, how
- 35:19Speaker 2: much time do you think you need to spin up
- 35:21Speaker 2: on the playbook and what we do? And he said
- 35:23Speaker 2: a couple weeks. And that's another reason why they're going
- 35:26Speaker 2: to put him on the practice squad. So he may
- 35:27Speaker 2: not play in the opener. He may, depending on how
- 35:30Speaker 2: he progresses in the practices over the next six days.
- 35:32Speaker 2: But this is a longer-term deal than just right now,
- 35:35Speaker 2: which is why they stashed him on the practice squad.
- 35:37Speaker 2: The other interesting thing I thought from last night was
- 35:39Speaker 2: Nick Emanuari's scene in Mike McDonald's office. Emanuari says– It's
- 35:44Speaker 2: been really hard. I can't do back-to-back days. Those are hard.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Meaning that he's sore and pushing through with his arthroscopic
- 35:51Speaker 2: ankle surgery recovery. That back-to-back days really are hard for him.
- 35:54Speaker 2: That was last week. And McDonald, you can hear him
- 35:57Speaker 2: telling him, it's okay. You're on your own timeline. Don't
- 36:00Speaker 2: worry about what everybody else says, whether you can start
- 36:01Speaker 2: in the open or not. Just do your own timeline.
- 36:04Speaker 2: And he said, it's good to be sore. And so
- 36:08Speaker 2: all that is to say that, as I've been saying,
- 36:10Speaker 2: it's not a sure thing. It's not even a semi-sure
- 36:12Speaker 2: thing even where he plays in week one. And McDonald
- 36:15Speaker 2: doesn't want to put pressure on him. And that's why
- 36:17Speaker 2: the very first day of training camp when I asked
- 36:18Speaker 2: McDonald to expect him to be there for the opener,
- 36:21Speaker 2: he didn't want any part of putting a timeline or
- 36:23Speaker 2: estimation on him. He said, I don't know. And he's
- 36:26Speaker 2: still there. He doesn't want publicly there to be any
- 36:28Speaker 2: kind of expectation. So I would temper that.
- 36:31Speaker 3: And there shouldn't.
- 36:32Speaker 6: There shouldn't be. You know, like I'm speaking for the athlete.
- 36:35Speaker 6: I'm more of an advocate than a reporter.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Well, there is a question, though, Jessamyn, of why he
- 36:38Speaker 2: didn't have the surgery earlier. They thought that his ankle
- 36:41Speaker 2: was healing to the point he would be ready for
- 36:43Speaker 2: the opening, and he participated fully in all the spring
- 36:45Speaker 2: practices and the off-season practices. Then he had the surgery
- 36:48Speaker 2: in July. There is that question, which remains unanswered as
- 36:53Speaker 2: to why he didn't have it earlier.
- 36:53Speaker 3: And that's fair. That's fair.
- 36:54Speaker 2: I think so. And they just thought he was further
- 36:57Speaker 2: along in recovering when he was practicing. in the May
- 37:00Speaker 2: and June off-season practices. So lots from yesterday. It is
- 37:05Speaker 2: interesting to see the behind the scenes, especially the discussions
- 37:07Speaker 2: the coaches have with the players in the meeting rooms,
- 37:09Speaker 2: which we're not privy to. If you haven't seen the
- 37:11Speaker 2: Hard Knocks episode, I just revealed a lot of it.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Spoiler alert, Greg.
- 37:17Speaker 2: But it'll re-air. It's on HBO Max streaming. It's on
- 37:20Speaker 2: HBO replaying. It was the last episode. Now next year,
- 37:23Speaker 2: they go to New England and be the Patriots for
- 37:25Speaker 2: the training camp. Patriots, of course, coming in here Wednesday night.
- 37:29Speaker 2: The NFL kickoff game, 5 o'clock, a little after 5 o'clock,
- 37:32Speaker 2: 5.15 on Wednesday night, Seahawks and Patriots. Before that is
- 37:36Speaker 2: the Apple Cup, the 118th Apple Cup. At 11 o'clock,
- 37:38Speaker 2: we're going to talk to Greg Woods, the spokesman in view.
- 37:41Speaker 2: Up next, high school football begins in our state tomorrow.
- 37:44Speaker 2: I'm officiating a game tomorrow, Ballard and Lincoln.
- 37:48Speaker 3: How many jobs do you have again?
- 37:49Speaker 2: This is like a labor of love. I love this.
- 37:51Speaker 2: And then Friday night is a mammoth game. We're going
- 37:55Speaker 2: to talk about our first game of the week, our
- 37:57Speaker 2: new segment, High School Football Friday, and what we're going
- 37:59Speaker 2: to have for you on Friday. We'll talk about that
- 38:00Speaker 2: next on 93.3 KJR FM. Hi, welcome back. Happy Wednesday
- 38:20Speaker 2: to you. Thanks for listening. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you.
- 38:23Speaker 2: We're on every weekday, 10 a.m. to noon here on
- 38:25Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Thanks for the text on the text line.
- 38:28Speaker 2: I do high school football officiating, 360, asking what positions
- 38:33Speaker 2: I do. Actually, 360, Olympia perhaps. I started 30-some years
- 38:37Speaker 2: ago in Olympia when I was a second lieutenant at
- 38:40Speaker 2: Fort Lewis. That's where I first started officiating.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Really?
- 38:43Speaker 2: In the Olympia officiating group. Yeah, I did some eight-man football,
- 38:46Speaker 2: then a Napa Vine. That was a trip. Eight on
- 38:49Speaker 2: eight on a full field. That was wild.
- 38:51Speaker 3: It's amazing what we did back.
- 38:52Speaker 2: In the day.
- 38:53Speaker 11: It is.
- 38:54Speaker 2: It was cool. And then I went to California and
- 38:55Speaker 2: I did it for about 10 years when I lived
- 38:57Speaker 2: down there. I did the Oakland City League. And that
- 39:00Speaker 2: was wild. I don't have time to tell the story now,
- 39:03Speaker 2: but there was once a helicopter landed on a field
- 39:05Speaker 2: during an OAL game, Oakland Athletic League. A police helicopter
- 39:09Speaker 2: landed on the field to break up a fight between
- 39:11Speaker 2: players and coaches. A police helicopter? It was wild. This
- 39:15Speaker 2: is how the OAL rolls. all day games because they
- 39:18Speaker 2: don't want to have crime at night. So they have
- 39:20Speaker 2: day games and a police helicopter land on the field
- 39:22Speaker 2: in the white hat. Referee looked at me and said, Greg,
- 39:25Speaker 2: we're done. We all five of us walked off the field.
- 39:29Speaker 2: It was, uh, McClymonds against Skyline High School up at
- 39:32Speaker 2: Skyline helicopter. I refereed Marshawn Lynch's games, Dennis Dixon.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Wait, what part of Cali?
- 39:39Speaker 11: Oakland.
- 39:40Speaker 6: Oh.
- 39:41Speaker 2: I lived in Oakland and I lived in the Oakland city.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I was once the, I was often the only white official.
- 39:47Speaker 2: I was the only white person on the, entire scene
- 39:49Speaker 2: of the game. It can't be anything. I'd had players. Oh,
- 39:52Speaker 2: I have some good stories about that. It was a blast.
- 39:55Speaker 2: And then when I came back here, I didn't do it.
- 39:56Speaker 2: My kids were young and my wife's like, no, hell no.
- 39:58Speaker 2: You're not going to go Friday and Saturday and Thursday nights.
- 40:00Speaker 2: And I'm a two little baby. Same reason I don't
- 40:02Speaker 2: golf anymore. We have twins at home. I'm not going
- 40:05Speaker 2: to leave her five hours to by herself with two
- 40:07Speaker 2: twins after she's working full time all week. So I
- 40:10Speaker 2: didn't do officiating until just last year when I wanted
- 40:13Speaker 2: to get my son, our son, Eric into it. And
- 40:16Speaker 2: he's great. He's, And he runs, he outruns the players.
- 40:19Speaker 2: He beats him to the goal line. He takes pride
- 40:20Speaker 2: in doing that, but he loved it. And we did
- 40:22Speaker 2: it last year. So he loves it. And so we can't,
- 40:27Speaker 2: I came back last year to do it. And now
- 40:30Speaker 2: this is my second season with the PNF away, the
- 40:32Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest football association. And, uh, yeah, I do back to,
- 40:36Speaker 2: I did white hat a lot in Oakland, but, um,
- 40:39Speaker 2: and I do back judge. I'll do wings this weekend,
- 40:41Speaker 2: but I do enjoy back judge quite a bit. So
- 40:42Speaker 2: thanks for asking, anyone with 360. Okay, so speaking of
- 40:45Speaker 2: high school football, tomorrow, beginning tomorrow, every Friday during the
- 40:49Speaker 2: football season, we're going to feature a high school football
- 40:51Speaker 2: game of the week, and the coaches.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Are in it.
- 40:53Speaker 2: We're going to have them on the air talking about
- 40:55Speaker 2: the game, their teams, and what they do. And tomorrow,
- 40:58Speaker 2: we got a good one. Man, talk about a great opener.
- 41:01Speaker 2: A 4A showdown. Number three, Graham Kapowson at number four,
- 41:06Speaker 2: Lake Stevens. Lake Stevens knocked Graham Kapowsin out of the
- 41:09Speaker 2: 4A state playoffs last year. Well, the rematch is week one.
- 41:13Speaker 2: How about that? Jeff Logan, the head coach of Graham
- 41:15Speaker 2: Kapowsin High School, is going to be on with us
- 41:17Speaker 2: tomorrow to preview that game and talk about Graham Kapowsin
- 41:20Speaker 2: High School. They've got a quarterback who's a junior who's
- 41:22Speaker 2: been on varsity for three years. It's going to be fun,
- 41:26Speaker 2: and we're enjoying it. We're semi-partnering with King 5, who
- 41:29Speaker 2: streams live stream games a week onto their king5. com.
- 41:32Speaker 3: They're really good at high school football, yes.
- 41:35Speaker 2: And Chris.
- 41:35Speaker 3: And high school sports in general.
- 41:37Speaker 2: I called Chris this week and said, what's your game
- 41:38Speaker 2: of the week? And he told me GK against Lake Stevens.
- 41:41Speaker 2: And okay, let's call up the coaches. And we're trying
- 41:46Speaker 2: to get Lake Stevens as coach as well. He's also
- 41:48Speaker 2: a teacher. So the schedule is working against us a
- 41:51Speaker 2: little bit there, but Jeff Logan, Graham Capustin high school
- 41:53Speaker 2: is confirmed. He'll be on the show tomorrow. We're going
- 41:55Speaker 2: to do that every week. I've got games lined up.
- 41:58Speaker 2: If you're interested, give us a shout of coach. You'd
- 42:01Speaker 2: like us to highlight a, game each week that you
- 42:04Speaker 2: think is worthy of game of the week consideration throw
- 42:07Speaker 2: it on the text line 49451 but that'll start tomorrow
- 42:11Speaker 2: and i just think it's cool to highlight maybe people
- 42:14Speaker 2: that aren't on television or not quite yet at the
- 42:17Speaker 2: level that we usually talk about here on kgr but
- 42:20Speaker 2: man do they do a lot of work and i
- 42:22Speaker 2: can tell you from coaching high school baseball you don't
- 42:24Speaker 2: get paid and you job description does not fit the
- 42:27Speaker 2: time you put in to coaching youth sports No.
- 42:30Speaker 3: It does not.
- 42:31Speaker 2: It is so extensive.
- 42:33Speaker 6: I was a junior high volleyball coach after I graduated college,
- 42:37Speaker 6: and I loved every second of it.
- 42:40Speaker 3: I went to all their graduations.
- 42:42Speaker 13: That's a lot of work.
- 42:44Speaker 3: It is, but I loved it.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 42:46Speaker 3: I loved it.
- 42:47Speaker 2: It's the same reason I still officiate. I love it.
- 42:49Speaker 2: It is a labor of love. We don't get paid
- 42:51Speaker 2: a ton. And raising people coach, same reason. So we
- 42:54Speaker 2: want to salute and give exposure and some voice to
- 42:57Speaker 2: those who serve our youth. in coaching because it ain't easy.
- 43:02Speaker 2: And they do it because they love it. And we're
- 43:03Speaker 2: going to have Jeff Logan on tomorrow to talk about
- 43:06Speaker 2: Grand Cup housing against Lake Stevens. That'll be on the
- 43:08Speaker 2: show tomorrow. The Apple Cup will be on KJR on Sunday.
- 43:12Speaker 2: The Washington State perspective of it, the coverage is not
- 43:16Speaker 2: quite as bare as it's been portrayed in Pullman. Greg
- 43:19Speaker 2: Woods of the Spokesman Review is going to talk to
- 43:20Speaker 2: us next about the Washington State side of the 118th
- 43:23Speaker 2: Apple Cup fair Sunday on 93.3 KJR FM.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Runnels Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM
- 43:45Speaker 1: Sports Headlines.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Good morning. Headlines are brought to you by Frostbrew. Of course,
- 43:49Speaker 2: I choose chill. The Mariners have a game today, the
- 43:52Speaker 2: afternoon game at Fenway Park to end their road trip.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Laz Montes is not in the lineup because the Red
- 43:58Speaker 2: Sox have thrown a left-handed pitcher and he's a left-handed batter.
- 44:04Speaker 2: We already went off on that. Last night, the 21-year-old
- 44:07Speaker 2: became the youngest Mariner to debut with a home run.
- 44:10Speaker 2: First youngest to hit a home run in his Major
- 44:12Speaker 2: League debut. 21 years, 314 days, almost two years younger
- 44:16Speaker 2: than Alvin Davis. Gave the Mariners a 9-1 lead with
- 44:19Speaker 2: a shot to center field. Dead center at Fenway Park,
- 44:22Speaker 2: about 407 feet. It's a big poke. Laz Montes, two hits,
- 44:27Speaker 2: two RBIs, two runs scored. First Mariner to debut, Major
- 44:31Speaker 2: League debut with two hits since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. So, yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 2: go sit down today because they're throwing a left-hander. Mariners
- 44:40Speaker 2: made up a game on the trash cans last night
- 44:41Speaker 2: in that 9-6 win over the Red Sox. They're five
- 44:44Speaker 2: games back in the AL West, 23 games remain. Today,
- 44:47Speaker 2: the finale, as I said, in the road trip at
- 44:49Speaker 2: Fenway Park. And then they fly across the country and
- 44:51Speaker 2: go straight in tomorrow night at the yard. against the
- 44:54Speaker 2: A's in a four-game series. No off day between that
- 44:58Speaker 2: series and the next one. We'll see what they can
- 45:02Speaker 2: do against the A's and then the Trash Can, or
- 45:04Speaker 2: just Rangers next week here in Seattle. Seahawks had their
- 45:06Speaker 2: second of three days off before they get in practice next,
- 45:09Speaker 2: the opener next weekend, excuse me, next Wednesday, that W word,
- 45:13Speaker 2: against New England. Fourth and final, fifth and final episode
- 45:16Speaker 2: of Hard Knocks aired last night. We talked about that
- 45:19Speaker 2: in length. If you missed it, you can go to
- 45:21Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR.
- 45:22Speaker 8: Com.
- 45:23Speaker 2: The Raiders have this morning announced their starting quarterback to
- 45:25Speaker 2: begin the season, and it is Kirk Cousins. Not the
- 45:30Speaker 2: rookie Fernando Mendoza. He's going to sit and watch. Tiger
- 45:33Speaker 2: Woods had his driver's license suspended five years this morning
- 45:36Speaker 2: after striking a plea deal in Florida in his DUI
- 45:38Speaker 2: case there. Pleaded no contest to reduce charge of reckless driving,
- 45:42Speaker 2: refusal to submit to a lawful test. Martin County Circuit
- 45:46Speaker 2: Court in Florida also gave him a fine of $ 1, 500.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Found him guilty of careless driving and moving violation. Tiger Woods.
- 45:54Speaker 2: And former Washington Huskies basketball star Quincy Pondexter is leaving
- 45:57Speaker 2: coach Danny Sprinkle's Husky coaching staff. He's going to become
- 46:01Speaker 2: the new head coach of the Windy City Bulls of
- 46:03Speaker 2: the G League. That's the Chicago Bulls G League team
- 46:06Speaker 2: in the Chicago suburbs. Good up for Quincy Pondexter. Starting
- 46:10Speaker 2: his career as.
- 46:11Speaker 3: A head coach. Let's go.
- 46:12Speaker 2: That's cool. Staying in college, we got the 180th Apple Cup.
- 46:20Speaker 13: Aha.
- 46:21Speaker 2: I recognize that song. I thought for sure we were
- 46:25Speaker 2: going to get the Cougs fight song here. You know what?
- 46:27Speaker 3: I have to be a professional sometimes.
- 46:30Speaker 2: We are in the home of the Huskies. And the
- 46:32Speaker 2: home of the Huskies welcoming now from the Spokesman Review,
- 46:35Speaker 2: Greg Woods is the beat writer for the Washington State Cougars.
- 46:38Speaker 2: On the east side, he joins us on the Beacon
- 46:40Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline. Greg, it's been a while since we talked
- 46:42Speaker 2: to you. I talked to you. How are you doing?
- 46:44Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us.
- 46:46Speaker 11: Yeah, of course, man. How are you doing?
- 46:47Speaker 2: Yeah, well, thank you. It's been a couple years now,
- 46:50Speaker 2: but are you still, it's just odd to have the
- 46:52Speaker 2: Apple Cup in September, especially week one. What's the vibe
- 46:56Speaker 2: over there? Is there a big game feel at all
- 46:58Speaker 2: to this?
- 47:00Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, it was definitely weird to be on
- 47:02Speaker 13: the last day of August and saying, oh, it's Apple
- 47:04Speaker 13: Cup week. But that's kind of where things are. No,
- 47:08Speaker 13: I think there's still kind of a big game feel.
- 47:10Speaker 13: I mean, I think as the portal kind of brings
- 47:14Speaker 13: in players from all over the country to different teams now,
- 47:16Speaker 13: I think there's like, it's less, what's the word I'm
- 47:19Speaker 13: looking for? Like more saturated, or I guess like less
- 47:23Speaker 13: saturated is what I'm trying to say, but For these guys,
- 47:25Speaker 13: there's still plenty of guys on this year's team that
- 47:27Speaker 13: are from Washington that have played in the game in
- 47:30Speaker 13: 24 or 25. So I think there's enough of those
- 47:33Speaker 13: guys for them to give something of a feel. And
- 47:35Speaker 13: then I saw– I think one of the UW linebackers
- 47:38Speaker 13: said something about, oh, we just hate these guys.
- 47:40Speaker 11: So no love lost still.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Well, no love lost between the sideline reporters on our station. Hey, Greg.
- 47:50Speaker 3: We have to kill Softie.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Kill? Oh, wait.
- 47:54Speaker 6: No, I mean kill his character.
- 47:58Speaker 2: He's now the sideline reporter, Greg, for the Husky broadcast,
- 48:01Speaker 2: now that Elyse Woodward's moving upstairs to play by play.
- 48:04Speaker 2: So Jessamine and Softie are going to be on opposite
- 48:07Speaker 2: sidelines in the same role.
- 48:08Speaker 3: We use our words to demoralize.
- 48:10Speaker 6: Him is all I'm asking for.
- 48:14Speaker 11: That's what you're on the radio for, I guess.
- 48:16Speaker 2: Greg, you brought up a good point about how there
- 48:18Speaker 2: are still players on both sides who have played in
- 48:20Speaker 2: this game before or are from Washington State. The perception is,
- 48:24Speaker 2: especially on this side of the mountains, is that it's
- 48:27Speaker 2: Berrift and Pullman and everybody left, and they're starting completely
- 48:30Speaker 2: over with a new coach, a new regime, a general manager,
- 48:32Speaker 2: and a brand-new roster. But you've got Kirby Voorhees, your
- 48:35Speaker 2: leading rusher from Latin, Tony Freeman, the top receiver. You've
- 48:39Speaker 2: got a couple of starting offensive linemen. You've got Matthias
- 48:42Speaker 2: McClain and Keith Brown on defense. It's not a completely
- 48:45Speaker 2: bare cupboard, is it?
- 48:48Speaker 13: No, I mean, I think that was much more the
- 48:49Speaker 13: case last year than it was this year. I mean,
- 48:52Speaker 13: they had, what, like 75 new players this year? I'm sorry,
- 48:55Speaker 13: last year. And then this year, it's more like 30
- 48:57Speaker 13: or 32, I want to say. So plenty of talent
- 49:00Speaker 13: that's from Washington that kind of understands the value of
- 49:04Speaker 13: this game. I mean, even guys that didn't really play
- 49:06Speaker 13: last year are still back this year. I mean, Isaiah
- 49:08Speaker 13: Hung is fantastic. Uh, a back to blind back up
- 49:11Speaker 13: for them. I'm trying to think, uh, layup moving velocity
- 49:13Speaker 13: is from Lakewood. He's he's a running back. So plenty
- 49:16Speaker 13: of guys that still kind of, that are either from
- 49:18Speaker 13: Washington or have been here long enough, even for just
- 49:20Speaker 13: a year, to understand kind of what this game means
- 49:23Speaker 13: to the state and everybody around it.
- 49:25Speaker 11: So that's good.
- 49:26Speaker 13: I mean, I think that was like, if there was
- 49:28Speaker 13: ever a year where it was like kind of getting
- 49:29Speaker 13: lost on people, maybe it was last year. But I
- 49:32Speaker 13: think because of the guys that they had returning and
- 49:35Speaker 13: guys from the state that they have this year, I
- 49:37Speaker 13: think it's still, you know, Still plenty of the case
- 49:42Speaker 13: this year.
- 49:43Speaker 2: Okay, so tell us about Kirby Moore. Prosser, homegrown, 36
- 49:47Speaker 2: years old, first-time head coach. Jessamyn is swooning in the
- 49:51Speaker 2: producer's booth.
- 49:52Speaker 3: I love him as a coach. He came to the Idaho–
- 49:57Speaker 3: He came to the Boise State Bowl, the potato.
- 50:00Speaker 11: Bowl, right?
- 50:01Speaker 6: Yes.
- 50:01Speaker 11: The famous potato bowl.
- 50:03Speaker 3: The famous potato bowl.
- 50:05Speaker 6: But he came there and he just wooed everyone around him.
- 50:09Speaker 6: And I think he's going to be amazing, especially because
- 50:12Speaker 6: he didn't come from a head coaching position. He didn't
- 50:15Speaker 6: abandon a team because he came from Missouri and he
- 50:19Speaker 6: was a coordinator and And now he's, I just feel
- 50:23Speaker 6: like it's a lot better when a coach doesn't abandon
- 50:26Speaker 6: a team as the head coach where he just moves up.
- 50:30Speaker 6: And Washington State has not necessarily been looked at a
- 50:34Speaker 6: moving up position. And now it is because of him.
- 50:39Speaker 2: And he's come home.
- 50:40Speaker 6: Well, yes.
- 50:41Speaker 2: Although he played at Boise State, he's from Prosser, former
- 50:44Speaker 2: 2A state player of the year at Prosser High School.
- 50:46Speaker 2: What have you noticed, Greg, about Kirby Moore? How he
- 50:48Speaker 2: runs practices, how he runs the team, the leadership, anything
- 50:52Speaker 2: that stands out about Kirby Moore that's caught your eye?
- 50:57Speaker 13: I mean, I think he's definitely more excited to be
- 51:00Speaker 13: in front of media settings than his predecessor.
- 51:02Speaker 11: That's for sure. So that, that, that stands out right away.
- 51:07Speaker 13: I think in practice, it's like pretty up-tempo both in
- 51:11Speaker 13: terms of the actual plays of the running and just
- 51:13Speaker 13: the overall pace of the practice. So that's been pretty
- 51:15Speaker 13: interesting to watch unfold. He always emphasizes like doing things together.
- 51:19Speaker 13: Like I think in his like Monday press conference on Monday,
- 51:22Speaker 13: he must've mentioned the word together. Like, it felt like
- 51:25Speaker 13: a dozen times it probably wasn't that much but it
- 51:27Speaker 13: felt like it so uh well i know i think
- 51:32Speaker 13: the thing he says the most is is right i
- 51:35Speaker 13: kill n sentences saying like.
- 51:36Speaker 11: You know we all get together right you gotta do.
- 51:38Speaker 13: This right so i think that's like the thing that
- 51:39Speaker 13: he says where everybody's has a little word they say
- 51:42Speaker 13: um in sentences so um no he's he's really fun
- 51:46Speaker 13: to be around he's not super talkative at least not
- 51:49Speaker 13: like in front of a camera like I think he
- 51:51Speaker 13: just is pretty succinct, and I think he'll get more
- 51:54Speaker 13: comfortable with that as time goes on. I think you
- 51:57Speaker 13: can see a little bit. Sometimes we'll ask him something silly,
- 51:59Speaker 13: and he'll laugh a little bit, but then he'll get
- 52:04Speaker 13: back on topic pretty quickly. So I think there's probably
- 52:07Speaker 13: part of him that's still kind of getting used to
- 52:09Speaker 13: that being kind of a front-facing figure in front of
- 52:12Speaker 13: cameras like that. But like you said, he's 36, the
- 52:15Speaker 13: first time being a head coach, so all that will
- 52:19Speaker 13: come in time.
- 52:19Speaker 2: This is the voice of Greg Woods. He's the spokesman
- 52:21Speaker 2: and review beat writer for the Washington State Cougars. Joining
- 52:24Speaker 2: us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline a couple days before
- 52:26Speaker 2: the 118th Apple Cup on Sunday, 1 p.m. at Husky Stadium,
- 52:29Speaker 2: live here on 93.3 KJR FM with the Husky Honks
- 52:33Speaker 2: pregame show at 9 a.m. And we're getting the Cougs
- 52:35Speaker 2: perspective from Greg Woods. Our new quarterback, Caden Pinnock, has
- 52:40Speaker 2: played in Husky Stadium before. He was at a UC
- 52:42Speaker 2: Davis quarterback. He played in a 70-14 or whatever that
- 52:46Speaker 2: final score ended up being on a Saturday night a
- 52:48Speaker 2: couple seasons ago. Well, Pinnock has won the job, recently
- 52:51Speaker 2: named that. What have you noticed about him? How does
- 52:55Speaker 2: he fit Kirby Moore? How's Kirby Moore going to fit
- 52:57Speaker 2: to him? And is Washington State going to run the
- 52:59Speaker 2: same air raid type spread? Not a lot of running
- 53:03Speaker 2: as it has been in their pension ever since, well,
- 53:05Speaker 2: even before the Leach era.
- 53:09Speaker 13: I don't think it'll be as much air raid at all.
- 53:11Speaker 13: Like there's still, I mean, they'll still throw.
- 53:13Speaker 11: The ball plenty.
- 53:13Speaker 13: Um, but you know, more was no sea of Missouri
- 53:16Speaker 13: where they were more or less known for running the ball.
- 53:19Speaker 11: I know.
- 53:19Speaker 13: I mean, it's not a lot, but that was a
- 53:21Speaker 13: big part of their game plan. So plenty of running coming. Um,
- 53:24Speaker 13: as far as it goes, he, he looked pretty good
- 53:28Speaker 13: in fall camp. He's, um, kind of a smaller guy.
- 53:31Speaker 13: I mean, six foot is probably a little generous to
- 53:34Speaker 13: be honest on, on his bio.
- 53:36Speaker 11: Um, but yeah he he's mobile for sure i think that's.
- 53:40Speaker 13: One of the things that i noticed um throughout fall
- 53:42Speaker 13: camp is that like as the practices went on he
- 53:45Speaker 13: seemed more comfortable kind of just taking off and using
- 53:47Speaker 13: his legs and um pretty athletic pretty fast i mean
- 53:50Speaker 13: i know the thing that people always say about quarterbacks
- 53:52Speaker 13: oh he's you know sneaky fast sneaky athletic but i
- 53:55Speaker 13: i think that definitely is a little bit of the
- 53:56Speaker 13: case with him because you don't really you know it
- 53:58Speaker 13: doesn't jump off the page with him the way it
- 54:00Speaker 13: does with maybe someone like julian duggar their their backup
- 54:03Speaker 13: so Um, but that's, you know, a big part of his, uh,
- 54:07Speaker 13: game for sure.
- 54:09Speaker 11: Um, the deep ball is still kind of coming along.
- 54:12Speaker 13: I would say, I think that was the case for
- 54:14Speaker 13: all their quarterbacks throughout fall camp is trying to find the, um, the, uh,
- 54:18Speaker 13: kind of the reins on the deep ball. So, um,
- 54:21Speaker 13: definitely still an adjustment for him, I would say, but
- 54:23Speaker 13: I don't think, I mean, like everybody points to his,
- 54:26Speaker 13: his performance against UW last year at UC Davis. And
- 54:29Speaker 13: that was a terrible game for him, but, um, Do
- 54:31Speaker 13: not think it's the same to expect. I don't think
- 54:34Speaker 13: it's fair to expect him to play the same way
- 54:36Speaker 13: this time around. Better team, better offensive line around him,
- 54:39Speaker 13: and definitely more pieces in the UW defense as well.
- 54:45Speaker 2: So back to Kirby Moore a second. Is he being
- 54:47Speaker 2: cagey and not issuing a depth chart, or what's going
- 54:51Speaker 2: on there, keeping everybody guessing? What's going on there?
- 54:57Speaker 13: I think it's just a one chance during the season to–
- 55:00Speaker 13: give the opponents something of a surprise look. I think
- 55:04Speaker 13: their thinking is probably like, okay, once we play our
- 55:06Speaker 13: first game, our future opponents will have more or less an.
- 55:10Speaker 11: Idea of our depth chart.
- 55:12Speaker 13: But week one, we have, you know, I don't think
- 55:14Speaker 13: it's any mystery what their depth chart will end up being,
- 55:17Speaker 13: but I think the way they see it is like, well,
- 55:18Speaker 13: you know, this is our one chance to, you know,
- 55:21Speaker 13: give them something of a surprise. Because it's not like,
- 55:25Speaker 13: you know, there's a big position battle at quarterback or
- 55:27Speaker 13: running back or, I put out my projections the other day,
- 55:31Speaker 13: and I think those will be pretty close to what
- 55:35Speaker 13: they roll out there. But as far as they go,
- 55:37Speaker 13: it's like they're one chance to give them a surprise look.
- 55:41Speaker 13: I don't think they're being super-duper paranoid crazy, but I
- 55:44Speaker 13: think week one is their one chance to do that.
- 55:47Speaker 2: A little bit of gamesmanship from the rookie head coach. Okay,
- 55:50Speaker 2: we'll take some of that for the Apple Cup.
- 55:52Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 55:54Speaker 2: What is the importance of this game... Vis-a-vis the entire season, Greg,
- 55:59Speaker 2: for Washington State. Of course it would make their season
- 56:01Speaker 2: to beat the Huskies. It doesn't happen often in this series,
- 56:05Speaker 2: but it happened for a stretch and not so much recently.
- 56:08Speaker 2: And now all that they're doing, the new Pac-12. How
- 56:11Speaker 2: are they viewing this game in the prism of their
- 56:13Speaker 2: entire season? And how realistic is it? What do they
- 56:18Speaker 2: have to do to win this?
- 56:21Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I think if you ask them, they
- 56:23Speaker 13: would obviously say they have plans on winning the game.
- 56:26Speaker 13: I think realistically speaking, I mean, they're like 22 and
- 56:30Speaker 13: a half point underdogs.
- 56:31Speaker 11: That's a pretty tough spread to overcome.
- 56:35Speaker 13: I think realistically, if they can just come out of
- 56:37Speaker 13: this injury-free and have something to build on, if they
- 56:41Speaker 13: could get totally pumped and lose by a million, that's
- 56:44Speaker 13: obviously no good for them.
- 56:45Speaker 11: But I think if they can come out of it
- 56:47Speaker 11: within two.
- 56:49Speaker 11: Two scores and a field.
- 56:50Speaker 13: Goal maybe i think that would be you know somewhat
- 56:53Speaker 13: realistic um just you know have something to build on
- 56:56Speaker 13: they have such i mean i'm.
- 56:58Speaker 11: Sure you guys talked about it such a grueling opening
- 57:00Speaker 11: to the schedule.
- 57:01Speaker 13: Between au dub dad kansas state and then home against
- 57:04Speaker 13: arizona in there as well so there's just like some
- 57:07Speaker 13: there's that's three powerful opponents two on the road and
- 57:10Speaker 13: on top of that k-state is on a short week
- 57:12Speaker 13: with them um playing this game on a sunday so
- 57:15Speaker 13: There's just like so much going on in their first
- 57:18Speaker 13: four games of the season that I think if they
- 57:19Speaker 13: can just come out of this with something realistic to
- 57:22Speaker 13: kind of feel confident about and to build on, I
- 57:25Speaker 13: think that would go a long way. Because then they
- 57:28Speaker 13: have like five days back home and then they find
- 57:29Speaker 13: out to Manhattan and then they got to get up.
- 57:31Speaker 13: I mean, to them, that game is going to be
- 57:33Speaker 13: at 9 a.m. on their body clock. So it's a
- 57:36Speaker 13: tough way to open the season. So I think if
- 57:37Speaker 13: they can just come out of this with something to
- 57:39Speaker 13: build on, something to feel confident about, I think that'll
- 57:41Speaker 13: go a long way for them.
- 57:42Speaker 2: My Army team, the Pride and Dream, took care of
- 57:44Speaker 2: Kansas State and Manhattan. You guys, Washington State.
- 57:48Speaker 3: That will be.
- 57:49Speaker 11: No idea what you're talking about.
- 57:53Speaker 2: Well, they also have Duquesne. So they did have a
- 57:55Speaker 2: softer touch, it would appear, coming to Pullman in September.
- 58:00Speaker 2: And then you got the conference slate of Fresno State
- 58:03Speaker 2: at home, October 3rd is Parents Weekend. Then they go
- 58:06Speaker 2: at Utah State, at Oregon State, Boise State. At San
- 58:10Speaker 2: Diego State, Colorado State, Texas State, and then Oregon State
- 58:15Speaker 2: in the double dip in the conference play. Well, Greg,
- 58:18Speaker 2: as you see it, and if you watch the practices
- 58:20Speaker 2: all month here, where do you see them fitting in
- 58:23Speaker 2: the conference race this year? San Diego State, I would
- 58:26Speaker 2: think San Diego State, Boise State are the top two.
- 58:29Speaker 2: Not in that order. Boise State's one. San Diego State,
- 58:31Speaker 2: I would guess, is two. Where does Washington State, you think,
- 58:33Speaker 2: fit in there?
- 58:35Speaker 13: I picked them to finish fifth in our little preseason
- 58:38Speaker 13: media ball that we did a few weeks ago. Um,
- 58:41Speaker 13: cause yeah, I think it'll end up being, like you said,
- 58:43Speaker 13: Boise state, San Diego state, Fresno state, maybe Texas state.
- 58:47Speaker 13: I think Texas state to finish fourth and then WSU fifth. Um,
- 58:52Speaker 13: and for me, it was just kind of a product of, um,
- 58:55Speaker 13: how differently the season could go for them, depending on
- 58:58Speaker 13: how their.
- 58:59Speaker 11: Players pan out.
- 59:00Speaker 13: Cause they have so many guys that are from, you know,
- 59:03Speaker 13: the power four ranks that could have gone anywhere they
- 59:05Speaker 13: wanted out of high school.
- 59:06Speaker 11: And then they didn't get as much playing time wherever
- 59:08Speaker 11: they went. And now they're here at WSU.
- 59:10Speaker 13: WSU to kind of, you know, revive their careers a
- 59:12Speaker 13: little bit. So there's just so many. I think, like,
- 59:16Speaker 13: the way I've always talked about this season is that, like,
- 59:18Speaker 13: if those types of guys hit, like, if the guys
- 59:22Speaker 13: pan out that they brought in that they're depending on,
- 59:25Speaker 13: then they could finish, you know, top two or top
- 59:27Speaker 13: three in the Pac-12s. If they don't, then it could
- 59:30Speaker 13: get kind of ugly for them because of how much
- 59:34Speaker 13: they're asking out of guys that they're rolling out there.
- 59:38Speaker 13: So for me, it was kind of like a middle
- 59:41Speaker 13: ground between those two extremes. I don't think it'll be
- 59:44Speaker 13: as good as I just talked about. I don't think
- 59:46Speaker 13: it'll be as bad either. I think it'll be kind
- 59:48Speaker 13: of similar. So that's kind of where I got the
- 59:51Speaker 13: fifth pick. I think they'll end up kind of somewhere
- 59:53Speaker 13: in the middle. And honestly, for a first year head coach,
- 59:56Speaker 13: a bunch of new players and a new car, like
- 59:58Speaker 13: that's not, I mean, I know a lot of Cougs
- 59:59Speaker 13: fans might feel a little disappointed by that finish, but
- 1:00:03Speaker 13: all things considered, that's not, in my opinion, that would not.
- 1:00:05Speaker 11: Be such a bad first year for Kirby Moore.
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Greg Woods, who is joining us here.
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: Greg, you and I have both been through the crimson
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: and gray trenches together.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: So we understand this team.
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: But from a broader perspective, what do you think the
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: perception of the Cougs is on a national scale?
- 1:00:25Speaker 13: Well, I'm sure you guys saw there was a weird
- 1:00:28Speaker 13: graphic from Fox Sports a few weeks ago that took
- 1:00:30Speaker 13: them to finish 135th out of 138 teams nationally.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I saw that.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: I ignored it, Greg.
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: I ignored it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 13: Well, I think people need to understand that is completely
- 1:00:39Speaker 13: just engagement bait and trying to get people riled up.
- 1:00:41Speaker 13: So it will not be as bad as that guy
- 1:00:45Speaker 13: is suggesting. I mean, I think there's still some national,
- 1:00:51Speaker 13: what's the word, kind of condescension people's mind well no
- 1:00:56Speaker 13: i wasn't even trying to say that i think like
- 1:00:58Speaker 13: i think like people still see the flag at college
- 1:01:00Speaker 13: game day and they've been doing that for i mean
- 1:01:03Speaker 13: 100 and some straight weeks um or years or how
- 1:01:06Speaker 13: long has that been going i.
- 1:01:08Speaker 15: Think we're in the 120s at this point 120 yeah
- 1:01:12Speaker 15: something crazy um so i think like things like that
- 1:01:15Speaker 15: and and having them i mean having them be in
- 1:01:17Speaker 15: the top 20 or so a couple of years ago,
- 1:01:20Speaker 15: I think kind of helped propel them, you know, back
- 1:01:23Speaker 15: to the front of people's minds.
- 1:01:26Speaker 11: And I think to keep that up, they got to
- 1:01:27Speaker 11: just keep winning games.
- 1:01:28Speaker 13: I mean, you know, they don't have the luxury anymore of,
- 1:01:31Speaker 13: you know, being on a Saturday night game against Oregon
- 1:01:35Speaker 13: and on ABC anymore.
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: You know, that, you know, that kind of thing.
- 1:01:39Speaker 13: So I think people are still like, I mean, in
- 1:01:43Speaker 13: terms of eyeballs, I mean, I don't know. Which is
- 1:01:46Speaker 13: kind of what it's all about these days. But I
- 1:01:49Speaker 13: think people are still kind of excited about the Pac-12.
- 1:01:52Speaker 13: I think there's plenty of college football sickos that love,
- 1:01:56Speaker 13: you know, that kind of thing. There's plenty of people
- 1:01:58Speaker 13: out there that are watching college football for more than just,
- 1:02:01Speaker 13: you know, Alabama and Indiana and teams like that.
- 1:02:04Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I was just going to say.
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: That's kind of messy.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I am a big Teresa Gould fan. And
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: I'm wondering what your.
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: Perspective of what she's.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Done to rebuild the conference.
- 1:02:20Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I think she's done the best she
- 1:02:22Speaker 13: possibly could with kind of the pieces that were left
- 1:02:25Speaker 13: to pick up, honestly. I mean, I think it could
- 1:02:28Speaker 13: have gone way worse than the way it did after
- 1:02:30Speaker 13: everything kind of fell apart.
- 1:02:31Speaker 11: A few years ago.
- 1:02:32Speaker 13: I mean, getting Texas State, I know people think of,
- 1:02:34Speaker 13: I think I've heard people thought of Texas State as
- 1:02:36Speaker 13: like a what on, you know, what in the world? Like,
- 1:02:37Speaker 13: why are we getting Texas State? But I think between,
- 1:02:40Speaker 13: I mean, they have, you know, they had Brett Jackson,
- 1:02:42Speaker 13: a quarterback. They're going to be pretty good. So I
- 1:02:43Speaker 13: think that like with kind of where things were in
- 1:02:46Speaker 13: the fall of 23 and then the year after in 24,
- 1:02:50Speaker 13: I mean, I think she's done a great job with
- 1:02:54Speaker 13: kind of what they had to do.
- 1:02:56Speaker 11: I think it's like a little bit.
- 1:02:58Speaker 13: suspicious is that they have not released a number on
- 1:03:02Speaker 13: the media payouts per season for the tv deal i
- 1:03:05Speaker 13: think if that were like super duper impressive we would
- 1:03:07Speaker 13: have heard about it by now right um yeah i
- 1:03:13Speaker 13: think if that was something to brag about they would
- 1:03:15Speaker 13: have done it um maybe that's you know something that
- 1:03:18Speaker 13: gives you some positive cause um but overall i mean
- 1:03:22Speaker 13: between getting them on a bunch of different tv networks
- 1:03:24Speaker 13: between the cw and.
- 1:03:26Speaker 11: Usa and NBC and TNT.
- 1:03:29Speaker 13: I think that all of that, I think, taken together
- 1:03:31Speaker 13: is about as well as it could have gone to
- 1:03:33Speaker 13: this point.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: Greg, the Huskies and Cougs signed a five-year agreement when
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: the Huskies left the Pac-12 for the Big Ten. That
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: agreement ends in 2028. They have a return game in
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Pullman next year. They're scheduled to be at Husky Stadium
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: in 2028 and then nothing on the docks for beyond 2028.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: As you stand, as you get around Pullman and what
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: you've talked to, what's the perspective from Washington State's side
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: on whether the Apple Cup which started in 1900, will
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: continue past 2028.
- 1:03:59Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I think if you ask WSU, they
- 1:04:04Speaker 13: would love to keep playing it.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: Of course.
- 1:04:07Speaker 13: You know, I think, I mean, obviously, you know, Coug
- 1:04:10Speaker 13: fans hate UW, but that's a primetime game.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: A lot of times.
- 1:04:13Speaker 11: I mean, this weekend, it's 1 p.m. on NBC, a
- 1:04:16Speaker 11: standalone game, so.
- 1:04:18Speaker 13: And that way they get tons of eyeballs that they
- 1:04:20Speaker 13: would never, that they wouldn't get for other games.
- 1:04:22Speaker 11: So I think in that.
- 1:04:23Speaker 13: Way, and obviously like with them coming to Pullman, that
- 1:04:26Speaker 13: is a huge boot, not only for the university, but
- 1:04:29Speaker 13: restaurants and hotels. I mean, that is like the one
- 1:04:31Speaker 13: weekend that they, you know, everybody kind of comes to.
- 1:04:33Speaker 13: So I think in that way, they would love to
- 1:04:35Speaker 13: keep it going. The problem is, is that UW, I
- 1:04:39Speaker 13: think as this game keeps going and as the, you know,
- 1:04:43Speaker 13: difference of resources keeps growing between these teams, I think
- 1:04:47Speaker 13: UW has less reason to want to play this game
- 1:04:51Speaker 13: as much.
- 1:04:51Speaker 11: Because you think about it, I mean.
- 1:04:53Speaker 13: Like this weekend, if WSU loses this game, it's kind
- 1:04:57Speaker 13: of like, okay, you were, you know.
- 1:04:59Speaker 11: Expected to lose, and that's fine.
- 1:05:02Speaker 13: UW loses this game, all of a sudden, their season
- 1:05:04Speaker 13: is like in a tailspin where, you know, they're 0-1,
- 1:05:07Speaker 13: and then they got to go, you know, play the
- 1:05:08Speaker 13: rest of their season in the Big Ten. So I
- 1:05:11Speaker 13: think if you see the difference in, like, kind of
- 1:05:13Speaker 13: what's on the line for these two teams, you kind
- 1:05:16Speaker 13: of understand, like, the difference of kind of where they're
- 1:05:18Speaker 13: at and the, you know, kind of where they're at
- 1:05:21Speaker 13: in terms of wanting to play the game. So I
- 1:05:24Speaker 13: think beyond that, once you get to 2029, I think,
- 1:05:29Speaker 13: you know, there's just kind of less and less reason
- 1:05:31Speaker 13: for UW to want to play. I think it could
- 1:05:33Speaker 13: for sure continue. I think it would just kind of
- 1:05:36Speaker 13: require something of a leap from Washington. Like I said,
- 1:05:39Speaker 13: there's less and less reason for them to want to
- 1:05:41Speaker 13: keep playing this game.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Greg Woods, enjoy your... Jess wouldn't like that answer. She's...
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: The prospect of them upsetting the dogs on Sunday, that is.
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: I just really appreciate the standings because when you've got
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: nothing to lose, then there's a lot to gain.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Enjoy your trip over the mountains. Are you driving or flying, Greg?
- 1:06:01Speaker 9: Driving.
- 1:06:02Speaker 11: Driving. We're going up on Saturday.
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: Okay, good. So enjoy your weekend here in Seattle.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: Take you out for a bite.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us. Enjoy the weekend. Thanks, Greg.
- 1:06:12Speaker 11: Yeah, thank you, guys.
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: Greg Woods of the Spokesman Review, the Washington State Cougars
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: beat writer, saying, yeah, Caden Penick has struggled with the
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: deep ball, that they want to throw the ball deep,
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: but he's struggled. He's seen it in practice. They're going
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: to run the ball more than perhaps previous Washington State
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: teams have. They got Voorhees coming back as one of
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: their lead backs. They had 500 yards last year. And
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: he said, as many people have said, the future of
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: the Apple Cup is really on Washington, whether they want
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: to continue doing it or not. And there's less for
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: them to gain by playing Washington State than there is
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: for Washington State to play Washington. There's no doubt about that.
- 1:06:47Speaker 6: I love it. Zero bleeps given. Let's go.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Up next, your chance to be a part of the show.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: We have a couple talkbacks, I believe. We'll play those back.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: Go to the iHeartRadio app or 933KJR. com, the Greg Bell Show,
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: and leave back a talkback with a red microphone at
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: the top of the screen or your text line, 49451.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: We'll read back that next. And then Ian will join
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: us to tell us what's on his show, 12 to
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: 3 on 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. Greg Bell, Jessamyn McIntyre
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: with you. And every day at this time on 93.3 KJFM,
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: we do our talkbacks and our text line. And Jessamyn
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: is brokenhearted that the technical difficulties have prevented us from
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: the talkback.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: I'm so sad. Our site went down.
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: So those of you who hit that little red microphone,
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: I'm so sorry.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: I can't retrieve them.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: She has been in a panic during the break trying
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: to get it working.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: I thought maybe it was one computer. Maybe it was
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: a different one.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: No, they are down at the time, but anyone who
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: sent them in, I might be able to retrieve them
- 1:08:17Speaker 6: later this evening and save them for tomorrow.
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: Oh, but we have so many texts.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: We do.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: So that's good. Let's start with the M's.
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: Okay. Do you have one in mind?
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: I have to scroll.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: So far because we let off the show with the M's.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: 206 says, the M's need to follow Eddie O's advice.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Throw the iPads and analytics into the sound. That's in reference,
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: of course, to Laz Monte's not in the lineup today
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: because the Red Sox are throwing a left-handed pitcher and
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: he's a left-handed batter. The handedness. Don't start a lefty
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: against a lefty. He's a kid. He's 21. So good
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: vibes only last night, not today.
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: So good. But those vibes.
- 1:08:59Speaker 14: I mean.
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: you know, we were shouting to the rooftop about the
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: good vibes that Gino might bring back, right?
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: They didn't claim him after he passed the waivers.
- 1:09:08Speaker 8: And I.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Think Laz is maybe the new good vibes.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Two, five, three. Remember when it was a valuable experience
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: for a young guy to come up to the higher level,
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: maybe not succeed every once in a while so they
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: would learn things, that they were good and that was
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: good in the long run? If there's one thing this
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: Mariners organization doesn't tolerate, it is people succeeding.
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: Oh, oh, oh no.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: Two, five, three. Jerry DiPoto should have no peace in public.
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: He should get lambasted at every opportunity. What a waste
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: of a season. The season, the context of the American
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: League and the American League West is just infuriating. And
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: then you add on top of it the layer of
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: a looming lockout. A lockout of players next year with
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: the vino baseball.
- 1:09:58Speaker 3: Do we have to think about that?
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I guess not for this year, but
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: the future. They're going to shove that salary cap down
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: their throats.
- 1:10:06Speaker 6: I remember when they had... their lockout back in the 90s.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: I was a child and my dad refused to watch
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: a single game. He was so mad and the way
- 1:10:18Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden there was the roid
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: boom and Right after that, because baseball needed their fans back,
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: and I think they ignored a lot of things that
- 1:10:28Speaker 6: were going on. I don't want to see baseball ruined
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: that way again.
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: For those of you who don't remember or don't know,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: this is a sport, baseball, that canceled the World Series,
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: canceled an entire season in 1994 over labor impasse. This
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: is a sport, Major League Baseball, that Marvin Miller, famous,
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: I mean, he's like an icon in not only baseball players' minds,
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: but in all professional sports athletes' minds. Marvin Miller... was
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: the one who got the Major League Baseball Players Association
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: guaranteed contracts in free agency way back starting in the 70s.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: Kurt Flood, that was a reference earlier. Marvin Miller is
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: the one who broke owners and gave fully guaranteed contracts
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: to baseball players. And now they're trying to reel all
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: this back in with a salary cap and a salary floor.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: And the players are like, nope, we've had it 50
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: years this way. Sorry, you guys made this bed. Go
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: lay in it for a few more decades. And that's
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: where they are basically on this. labor impasse they think
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: is going to be a lockout in spring training. That's
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: the context to all of it. And that just makes
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: it even worse that the Mariners aren't capitalizing on this.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: At least not yet. There's 23 games remaining. The clock
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: is more than ticking for sure.
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: At the beginning of the show. Some people thought that
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: we didn't have rapport, Greg.
- 1:11:43Speaker 13: I heard.
- 1:11:45Speaker 9: You did.
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: And not that I need Greg to come to my
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: defense or anything, but we have actually a very good relationship.
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: And the 206 just chimed in.
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: Hey, other listener that doesn't like the opening segment to
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: this show. They won't say it because they're too nice,
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: but I can go kick rocks.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: Don't change the show.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Well, thank you. We have many of those, but I
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: appreciate that.
- 1:12:10Speaker 6: What I really do enjoy, though, is constructive criticism. I'm
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: always open to it. And, yeah, I was called a
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: screaming banshee yesterday. But that was only in reaction to Softie.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, you're trying to match him. 206 asks a
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: good question. For Coug fans, would you rather have a
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Cougs-Apple Cup victory or a Seahawks return in the playoffs?
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: You can only have one.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, for me, Apple Club.
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: But I'm very biased in this. I guess most Cougs.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Fans would be biased. I wonder what they, if Coug
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: and Seahawks fans out there, what would you.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: But you can only have one.
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: I think the Seahawks have a really good shot at
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: the playoffs this year.
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: Huskies and Seahawks fans. Would you rather have the Huskies
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: go to the college football playoff or the Seahawks go
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: to the Super Bowl? If you could only have one.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: That's a very rhetorical question. Of course, you can have
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: more than one.
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: Oh, it's at SoFi this year, too.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Yes, it is.
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: It's on the West Coast.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Yes, it is.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: Easily travelable.
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: Yes, it is. Yeah. A lot of people ask about
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: the officiating, and some of them chiming in. 253 says,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: I'm officiating Bonnie Lake versus White River tomorrow in Eatonville
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: against Squim on Friday. This is my 24th season. Hats
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: off to you, ma'am or sir, for 24 seasons of officiating.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: High school football. That's really cool that you do that
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: for setting an example and being a part of the
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: youth experience and youth sports experience. That's really cool.
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: Our friend Jen Mueller does that.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: She did. She was in our association for a couple
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: of years before I joined it. And then she left
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: a couple of years ago when she got the Seahawks
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: gig that they leave a lot on Fridays. So she
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: misses Friday, Saturday games because she travels on the Seahawks charters.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: But yes, she did do that for a while and
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: she was featured on the Seattle times and Other places
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: for that.
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: Yeah. Well, I love the way that Jen commits herself
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: to a job, too, because she sees it from the
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: inside out.
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: 206. Loved all the hard knocks. Our jewel has been exposed.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: We're different. We're trendsetters. We're close. Let the rest of
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: the NFL chase our coolness. Okay.
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: I don't think they wanted to be on Hard Knocks.
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Oh, no. I know they did.
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: They avoided it for so many years. And I– bears repeating,
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: they avoided it for many, many years by rule. The
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: NFL used to be that if you didn't make the playoffs,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: you were subject to a Hard Knocks trading camp.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: It used to be the bottom of the barrel, yes.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: That was only recently changed to where playoff teams– this
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: was the first time since the very first Hard Knocks
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: in 2001 that the defending Super Bowl champions were featured.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: The Baltimore Ravens was the very– defending champion Baltimore Ravens.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: It was the very first Hard Knocks. The Seahawks, the
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: first one since. And then next year, as I mentioned,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: they're going to do the New England Patriots. I will
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: say this as an aside, I traveled with back from
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Kansas city. I was on the shuttle from the rental
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: car place to the airport with the Hard Knocks camera
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: crew and traveled on the same plane. They were in
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: Kansas city. They were in the team hotel. They were
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: in Nashville and the team hotel. They said that the
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: cooperation with the Seahawks and the relationships they built and
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: the just the overall experience was the best they ever had.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: And this was some people that have been in NFL
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: films crew for 20 some years. They said that it
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: was a supreme level of cooperation between the Seahawks and
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: NFL films, and that they are now going to be
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: spoiled going to other places, that it's never going to
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: be like this again. And it was so good. That's true.
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: That they had never had a relationship with the team, coaches, players, access,
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: all of it. And they were blown away that a
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Superbowl champion would do this. They said they could see
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: it if it was a team that wasn't nearly as successful.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: But for one that is at the top of the heap,
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: they were blown away at the cooperation and the experience
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: they had. And on the flip side, I've talked anecdotally
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: to some people at the Seahawks and the upper levels
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: of the Seahawks who say this was far better of
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: an experience than they thought it was going to be.
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: And that working with them was tremendous. And they consider
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: them part of the family, the football ops people I'm
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: talking about. They consider some of the Hard Knocks people
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: part of the Seahawks family, which is an interesting symbiotic relationship.
- 1:16:22Speaker 3: So relationships matter is what you're saying?
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: That's probably the case, yes.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: That is probably the case. That's true. 253, this is
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: an interesting– this has permeated the entire Seattle market, this idea.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: It says, I honestly hope the Mariners lose three out
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: of every four the rest of the season. Everybody gets fired.
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: It's an interesting, maybe fatalistic way of looking at it.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Not maybe. Definitely a fatalistic way of looking at it.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: But are you in that camp where you don't want
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: them to sneak into the playoffs?
- 1:16:53Speaker 11: No, I'm not.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Because then it'll embolden the ownership to keep status quo.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: Whereas if they did make the playoffs with a team
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: this talented and made outs from last year's World Series,
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: they would blow it up. My retort to that would be,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: I think if they don't make the playoffs, they're not
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: blowing it up because they're still drawing 3.7 million fans
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: and they're still averaging 35,000, 38,000 a game. And as
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: a business enterprise, it's working. And the 20 some owners
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: that they have to answer to the investors in the
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: team from a business bottom line standpoint, it's working. They
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: don't pay a luxury tax. They're in the bottom half
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: of the league in payroll.
- 1:17:28Speaker 13: It works.
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: They spend less and make more. What's wrong with that?
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: As a baseball fan, It ain't working. We've talked about
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: this ad nauseum. So I'm not sure why maybe they
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: should clean house that they will because it's working. It's
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: not like they're going to have 5,000 fans in the
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: stands the rest of the season. Now, it will be
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: interesting to see when the A's roll through here and
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: some of these bad angels come up here once school
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: starts that habitually when school begins, attendance drops out unless
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: you're winning the division or your playoff type of environment.
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: But it will be interesting to see if the Mariners
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: stay in this five, six games back, and then the
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Angels roll in here in a midweek, what the attendance
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: is going to look like then, now that school is back.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: Something to think about anyway.
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: Just to think about. The summer was marvelous down at T-Mobile.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: But see, there's a large segment of fans who love
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: the T-Mobile experience.
- 1:18:28Speaker 11: And It's a good experience. It is.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: But there are a large segment of fans who don't
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: go to the games, who are still diehard fans or
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: have gotten fed up and won't go to the games anymore,
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: who don't go for just the bro experience out in
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: the bullpen or the hot dogs from heaven. The actual
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: baseball fan is infuriated by the product, the experience.
- 1:18:50Speaker 3: You're right when you're in the park it's very family
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: friendly it is my.
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Kids love it i let my wife and i have
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: a good time when we go but if you're just
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: there to watch the old baseball or the old car
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: dealership analogy if you're there to buy a car you'd
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: like the car to be good if you're there to
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: watch baseball you'd like the baseball to be good. And
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: this has not been a good season. It's infuriating for
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: a baseball fan, yet enjoyable for a, someone who just
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: wants to go out and experience the ballpark.
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: No, I get it.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: I get it.
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: I get both.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: And that's the frustration that a baseball fan in this
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: town has for 50 years.
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: That dreaded 50 51 going on 51, man. It's just
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: a little no world series.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: I mean, We all make fun of the Browns. The
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: Mariners are the Cleveland Browns of Major League Baseball.
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: Please don't compare us to the Cleve.
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: And the Browns won NFL championships back in the 50s.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: At least they have that to bank on. Up next,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: Ian Furness. The mayor of Maple Valley will join us
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: to tell us what's on his show next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:20:11Speaker 13: Jess, Greg, I'm down here in Surprise, Arizona, and I
- 1:20:15Speaker 13: listen to you guys all.
- 1:20:16Speaker 10: The time off of the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: How'd you like that plug? And you guys are my
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: type of cup of tea. Keep up the great work.
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 1:20:27Speaker 7: Hey, Chuck Powell here with the Morning Show, checking in
- 1:20:30Speaker 7: with the ABCs of the Mariners for Always Be Confusing.
- 1:20:34Speaker 7: I think it's good that our shiny new toy hits
- 1:20:37Speaker 7: a home run and we bench him. I think it's
- 1:20:39Speaker 7: good that we switch.
- 1:20:40Speaker 11: The lineups every day based on the hand of the pitcher.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: And it's not Jerry's fault.
- 1:20:45Speaker 11: I love Jerry DiPoto.
- 1:20:47Speaker 7: I'll argue with Greg in the face how good Jerry
- 1:20:49Speaker 7: DiPoto is and how good his hair looks. I think
- 1:20:52Speaker 7: it's good that we have no clubhouse chemistry.
- 1:20:55Speaker 11: Go DePoto.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Hey, Jess.
- 1:20:57Speaker 14: Roddy Dangerfield here again. This team's getting no respect to
- 1:21:00Speaker 14: the fans, I tell you. I'm getting no respect. Listen,
- 1:21:03Speaker 14: I started listening to them in the bathtub, though. It's
- 1:21:05Speaker 14: kind of nice. I started listening to them with the
- 1:21:07Speaker 14: radio while making toast. I mean, this year's been so ugly.
- 1:21:11Speaker 14: It's a team only Manic fans can love, and they
- 1:21:12Speaker 14: ain't too crazy about them either.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: Let's be real, though. Stop listening to them. All together.
- 1:21:17Speaker 14: Stop listening to them on the radio. Stop listening to
- 1:21:19Speaker 14: them on the TV, you see? I'm doing everything I
- 1:21:21Speaker 14: can to support them.
- 1:21:22Speaker 11: Hey, guys. So the Mariners have gone on the road now.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: From Brian, oh, no, Road Woos, to Brian, Road Woo!
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: What was that? So obviously this is not for working again.
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: We had issues earlier?
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: Our TalkBack site went down briefly.
- 1:21:44Speaker 14: And I like.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: Wait, say that again.
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: Our TalkBack site went down briefly.
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: And I got it fixed.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: Through our wonderful support team when it comes to digital.
- 1:21:58Speaker 16: El San Antonio treating you. How's San Antonio?
- 1:22:03Speaker 3: Well, I'm not in the sun.
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: Via third world country.
- 1:22:06Speaker 6: Anyway, I was very happy to feature the voices that
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: we always love.
- 1:22:12Speaker 16: I like the guy just totally sucking up with the
- 1:22:13Speaker 16: iHeartRadio app. That's sensational. That's a good way to get
- 1:22:18Speaker 16: your voice on the air. It's a good way to
- 1:22:20Speaker 16: get your voice on the air. I listen on the
- 1:22:22Speaker 16: iHeartRadio app. I mean, that's the reality.
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: A lot of people do. We get Ryan in Scottsdale.
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: He's a huge listener.
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: I love Ryan.
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: Ryan's always on there.
- 1:22:30Speaker 16: When we did our Mariner topic yesterday, I looked at
- 1:22:33Speaker 16: the area codes. Again, reminder, if you're being that guy
- 1:22:37Speaker 16: or that woman, but if you're being that guy and
- 1:22:39Speaker 16: you're sending that stuff, we see your number, sometimes your name.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: We see all the stuff you sent.
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: Oh, are you saying mean things?
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: Some people do.
- 1:22:47Speaker 16: But I was going to say, like, yesterday, we had
- 1:22:49Speaker 16: a ton of out-of-the-area texts yesterday. People sideways with the
- 1:22:53Speaker 16: baseball team.
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: Thank you for listening. Las Montes finally gives them some five.
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: What's he batting today?
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: He's batting zero.
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 1:23:01Speaker 2: Is he a DH?
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: Is he a Lulig team? What do you mean he's
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: batting zero?
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: He's batting zero. He's in the dugout.
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: That's good. Handed this, man.
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: iPads.
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: Handed this. That's how this works.
- 1:23:15Speaker 11: You're lefty.
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: You sit.
- 1:23:16Speaker 4: They're up 9-1. They almost blew that game.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:23:19Speaker 14: 9-6.
- 1:23:19Speaker 6: 9-6.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: I mean, finally, we have something good to talk about
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: the Mariners, and then they bench him because he's not
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: the right hand for the pitcher they're playing.
- 1:23:29Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Speechless.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: When does football start?
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: In fact.
- 1:23:37Speaker 4: One week from today.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: What do you got going today?
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: What do you mean one week? We got Sunday.
- 1:23:40Speaker 16: Well, I mean, like NFL. But yeah, we got tomorrow.
- 1:23:44Speaker 16: We have tomorrow, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: We got Ballard Lincoln tomorrow. Oh, is Ballard Lincoln playing
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: on Thursday? Yeah. Let's go. Do they have their new
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: field yet?
- 1:23:51Speaker 6: No.
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: Not that I know of. Oh, they're getting it built,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:23:54Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:23:54Speaker 11: Okay.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: I think the last I checked, it was being built.
- 1:23:57Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Where are the city schools playing this year? All over.
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: Nathan Hale.
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: Because just from South. Memorial Stadium no longer exists.
- 1:24:06Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:24:06Speaker 11: So, okay.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Ingram. We've got a busy day.
- 1:24:09Speaker 16: We're doing a lot of college football today. We've got
- 1:24:11Speaker 16: our first weekly visit with Stuart Mandel. That's a scheduled
- 1:24:15Speaker 16: weekly visit. Week zero, week one. So, yeah, Stuart Mandel,
- 1:24:18Speaker 16: 1 o'clock today.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: You know what?
- 1:24:21Speaker 16: If you're the person saying there's nothing to watch in
- 1:24:23Speaker 16: college football this weekend, you're adult. You have no clue.
- 1:24:27Speaker 16: There's a lot of intriguing little matchups. They all have
- 1:24:29Speaker 16: to have a little number next to the name. We'll
- 1:24:32Speaker 16: talk about that with him. Also, we'll get into the
- 1:24:34Speaker 16: Cougs talking Cougs. First visit of the year with Alex
- 1:24:37Speaker 16: and MK. That's coming up at 2 p.m.
- 1:24:38Speaker 11: Today.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: And then we'll talk Hard Knocks and Mariners in the
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: first hour.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: Hard Knocks was a couple of interesting things we talked about.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: Putting Nick Emanuari. Still 50-50 if Emanuari plays a week
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: from tonight.
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: I wouldn't put money on it.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: In the season opener, I would not.
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: No.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: I would not. Ian's up next.
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: I want a healthy Nick.
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: But they do too. They've got 17 games to play,
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: not just this one. Ian Furness is up next.
- 1:25:00Speaker 14: 12-3.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: Justin McIntyre, Greg Bell. Do it again tomorrow. Live on
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM.
