- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number one, and today
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the show, Dan, myself and Spencer new Hearth are
- 0:23Speaker 1: reviewing our favorite gear from the two thousand seventeen hunting
- 0:26Speaker 1: season and the latest and greatest new products at the
- 0:29Speaker 1: two thousand eighteen A t A Show. Okay, let's do
- 0:47Speaker 1: this then, Dan, Dan, I didn't hurt your feelings with
- 0:51Speaker 1: that Facebook review today? What you just called me dumb
- 0:54Speaker 1: right on social media? Okay? What you what are you
- 1:00Speaker 1: talking about? Spencer? Yeah? I ran it by Dan first.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I wanted to make sure I thought we were we
- 1:07Speaker 1: agreed on something else, man, not to actually insult my intelligence.
- 1:13Speaker 1: But like so we're talking about that time that when
- 1:16Speaker 1: we were posting updates on the A t A Show
- 1:19Speaker 1: on the Wired on Facebook page, Spencer you posted a
- 1:21Speaker 1: picture of Dan's four fingered hand up and I think,
- 1:25Speaker 1: what what did it say? Uh? The two thousand eighteen
- 1:28Speaker 1: model is much dumber and still if that was that
- 1:33Speaker 1: exactly what you put, I can't Yeah, sounds like it
- 1:39Speaker 1: all right, let's record so we get the good stuff.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Oh I've already been recording. So so welcome to Wired Hunt,
- 1:48Speaker 1: brought to you by Siker Gear. And And as you've
- 1:52Speaker 1: heard today on the show, it's me, it's Dan Johnson,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and it's the Wired Hunt version of Erry White, Spencer
- 2:00Speaker 1: New Hearth, and we're talking about we're talking about the
- 2:04Speaker 1: two thousand eighteen a t A show. Uh, if you're
- 2:08Speaker 1: not familiar, this is the Archery Trade Association show that
- 2:11Speaker 1: happens every year where all the latest and greatest new
- 2:14Speaker 1: hunting gear is displayed. UM So we're gonna talk about
- 2:18Speaker 1: that a little bit. Dan was there, Spencer was there,
- 2:21Speaker 1: Spencer was slandering, Dan's good name there. Um I was
- 2:25Speaker 1: not there, So we'll we'll chat a lit about that.
- 2:27Speaker 1: And then also, since we're talking about gear, I've wanted
- 2:31Speaker 1: for us to have an episode where we just kind
- 2:34Speaker 1: of talked about some of the things that we've been using,
- 2:36Speaker 1: some of the gear we've been using. UM I get
- 2:39Speaker 1: lots and lots of questions about what you know, what
- 2:42Speaker 1: this thing do you use? What binos do use? What
- 2:44Speaker 1: bow do you use? What this thing, that thing whatever?
- 2:46Speaker 1: Um So the three of us can kind of share
- 2:48Speaker 1: some of our favorites. I thought, that is our very
- 2:52Speaker 1: are very loose um agenda for the day. So um,
- 2:58Speaker 1: I didn't go to a t. What do I mean
- 3:00Speaker 1: us out on Dan? You know, actually, don't time out.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Don't tell me that. Don't tell me that, because before
- 3:08Speaker 1: we start record, you said you've got a good story
- 3:12Speaker 1: for us. Not really, No, it's another kid's story, dude,
- 3:16Speaker 1: Like I'm all about those now, okay, well here how
- 3:20Speaker 1: about this? And I were eating supper right and my
- 3:22Speaker 1: son's like, uh, he eats his chicken, but he doesn't
- 3:26Speaker 1: eat this rice dish that we made, and uh, I go,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I go, Mac, you gotta have a couple of bites
- 3:31Speaker 1: before you get down or no snap tonight, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: trying to be that you know, a good dad, I
- 3:36Speaker 1: guess you'd say. And so he's like, okay, I'll do whatever.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And like I gave him like a spoonful, and then
- 3:44Speaker 1: I was kind of paying attention to my daughter. She
- 3:47Speaker 1: was carrying some plates, so I was she wouldn't spill,
- 3:49Speaker 1: so I put another spoonful in and then I put
- 3:52Speaker 1: another spoonful in his mouth, and I thought he was
- 3:54Speaker 1: chewing it and swallowing it. But then I go the
- 3:56Speaker 1: bathroom and he spits it all out on the bathroom floor,
- 4:01Speaker 1: as in like, uh, I'm gonna get away with this,
- 4:05Speaker 1: like but it's just like a big pile. It's almost
- 4:07Speaker 1: like the dog puked it up. But I know it
- 4:10Speaker 1: wasn't the dog because I didn't feed my dog Rice tonight.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And so Mac right now is in time out for
- 4:17Speaker 1: spitting food out on the kitchen floor or on the
- 4:19Speaker 1: bathroom floor. Kids. I saw. I also saw that you
- 4:25Speaker 1: were measuring the circumference of your other son's head. Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 1: My uh, my mother in law, I don't. I think
- 4:35Speaker 1: she went to a sporting goods store with my father
- 4:39Speaker 1: in law and there was you know that trophy tape
- 4:42Speaker 1: by by Wild Game Innovations, Right, Yeah, it's just you
- 4:45Speaker 1: just use it to measure deer antlers. Well, I put
- 4:48Speaker 1: some around. My youngest son knocks his head today and dude,
- 4:54Speaker 1: he's booner all day. He's got a seventy He does
- 5:00Speaker 1: to look like a lollipop. I feel like, I feel
- 5:03Speaker 1: like your sons are gonna you kind of have a
- 5:05Speaker 1: big head. I feel like they're gonna have big heads.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Is that fair? That's fair? I mean, my son Mac
- 5:10Speaker 1: is in the percentile for head size at his age,
- 5:17Speaker 1: his head, his head is almost as big as my wife's.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And then go back, and that goes back to the
- 5:27Speaker 1: discussion we had last week when we're talking about watching births. Yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: so he was he was? Was he incentile when the
- 5:33Speaker 1: birthing process happened? Yes? It was not a beautiful thing,
- 5:37Speaker 1: bless her heart? Yikes. Yeah, So Spencer, how many kids
- 5:41Speaker 1: are you gonna have? I've told you guys this before.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You don't have to twist my arm. Not getting my
- 5:49Speaker 1: wife pregnant so zero. You should just get av sect
- 5:52Speaker 1: to me right now, dude, just nip it in the butt.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I can't imagine they get a lot of year old seconds.
- 6:00Speaker 1: That would be a surprising call. I imagine you're you're proactive.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That should be admirers, right, that's right. So no babies
- 6:10Speaker 1: for Spencer went on the way from me, probably seven
- 6:14Speaker 1: for Dan by the time is all said and done,
- 6:17Speaker 1: A t A. What did I miss out on that second?
- 6:21Speaker 1: Before we get to that, you didn't go to the
- 6:24Speaker 1: A t A because your wife was not feeling well.
- 6:26Speaker 1: How is she doing now? She's she's she's doing pregnant,
- 6:33Speaker 1: you get that like, she's just pregnant, she's done ready
- 6:37Speaker 1: for the Oh yeah, I mean she is. She's at
- 6:40Speaker 1: that stage where it's just like, so, I think I
- 6:43Speaker 1: can tell the story without her getting mad. How about
- 6:45Speaker 1: how about this so early on in our pregnancy, like
- 6:51Speaker 1: she was all concerned. She's like, please, don't make me
- 6:53Speaker 1: laugh too hard. I've heard that when you're going through
- 6:55Speaker 1: this process, you lose control and I could pee myself,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and so I out of it as a goal of mine,
- 7:01Speaker 1: this whole process, to eventually make her piss herself. Well,
- 7:05Speaker 1: a few weeks ago, I was going out the front
- 7:08Speaker 1: door to get wood off of our porch where we
- 7:11Speaker 1: keep all of our you know, split wood for the fireplace.
- 7:14Speaker 1: So I go out the front door, and at the
- 7:17Speaker 1: last second, like I had stepped out, and then the
- 7:19Speaker 1: last second, I realized that I needed something that was
- 7:22Speaker 1: still inside. So I stepped out and then immediately turned
- 7:25Speaker 1: back and thought I could walk through the door still open,
- 7:28Speaker 1: But the spring on the screen door, unbeknownst to me
- 7:33Speaker 1: at the moment, had already pulled that door forward far
- 7:36Speaker 1: enough so when I turned at full speed, I ran
- 7:39Speaker 1: full speed right into the side of the door. So
- 7:42Speaker 1: like the narrow end that went, like the right in
- 7:44Speaker 1: between my foeead hard, very painful. She erupts and laughter
- 7:50Speaker 1: starts crying. She pisses herself. It was great. She really
- 7:53Speaker 1: enjoyed that. Um. Fast forward to like a week and
- 7:57Speaker 1: a half ago. I was working late, Kylie went to
- 8:03Speaker 1: bed early. She was laying in bed trying to go
- 8:04Speaker 1: to sleep. I no, no, that's not right. If I
- 8:08Speaker 1: remember right now, it was actually the night of the
- 8:10Speaker 1: national championship game, College national championship game. Now, um, so
- 8:15Speaker 1: this is right. So she went to go to bed
- 8:16Speaker 1: that night earlier, I was gonna stay out and watch
- 8:18Speaker 1: the football game. So I second night to our, I
- 8:20Speaker 1: leave the room. I go out, um, and I'm taking
- 8:22Speaker 1: a leak, and I'm thinking to myself, Man, she's so uncomfortable,
- 8:26Speaker 1: she's miserable, she's laying in there. You should really go
- 8:28Speaker 1: back and like give her attention, Like you shouldn't be
- 8:30Speaker 1: going to watch the football game. You shouldn't go back
- 8:32Speaker 1: and rub her back or something. So that's what I'm thinking.
- 8:34Speaker 1: So I and thinking this. I'm looking down at my phone,
- 8:39Speaker 1: trying to turn the flashlight on on my phone because
- 8:43Speaker 1: I wanted to use the flashlight to navigate into the
- 8:45Speaker 1: dark room, and then you know, quietly walk up and
- 8:49Speaker 1: say hi and rub her back. Well, while I'm looking
- 8:51Speaker 1: down at the phone, walking towards the bedroom door, I
- 8:54Speaker 1: forgot I closed the bedroom door, and I ran full
- 8:57Speaker 1: speed into the door, and then I then as I
- 9:01Speaker 1: hit it, I fell on the ground opening the door.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Kylie had heard all this. She's laughing hysterically, and she
- 9:08Speaker 1: again pisses herself so bad that the sheets are soaked
- 9:11Speaker 1: that we had to change the sheets. And both of
- 9:14Speaker 1: the times that I've now made her peer yourself have
- 9:16Speaker 1: been because I've ran into doors. Oh my god, that
- 9:20Speaker 1: must have been. I can I think you would have
- 9:23Speaker 1: recorded that? Or like, if you ever think about going
- 9:27Speaker 1: doing like a full uh what's that called, like the
- 9:31Speaker 1: Kardashians full blown reality show? Yeah, full blown reality show. Man.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I have a feeling you run into doors more than
- 9:39Speaker 1: just those two stories. The odds would say, so if
- 9:43Speaker 1: if this is the case, so yeah. I don't know
- 9:45Speaker 1: what's funny the fact that she paid herself twice or
- 9:47Speaker 1: the fact that both of them were from me running
- 9:50Speaker 1: into doors, But I, I honestly have that problem. Do
- 9:54Speaker 1: you ever do this either one of you guys. Were
- 9:56Speaker 1: I'm always in a hurry going places, like in my house,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and so i will be walking towards the closed door
- 10:02Speaker 1: and I'm already walking through the door as I'm turning
- 10:04Speaker 1: the door handle, so like I'm expecting that my door turned,
- 10:09Speaker 1: the turn of the handle will be successful and that
- 10:12Speaker 1: the door will open, so I don't slow down. I've
- 10:15Speaker 1: had many times where I do that and my hand
- 10:18Speaker 1: slips on the handle so it doesn't open. I just
- 10:20Speaker 1: slam full speed into it. Is that just me? Yeah? Okay, doors,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I've only been married six months, or maybe I haven't
- 10:32Speaker 1: got into the stage where I start walking the doors voluntarily.
- 10:37Speaker 1: But one thing I've learned about my wife after six
- 10:40Speaker 1: months is that she doesn't love it when I tell
- 10:42Speaker 1: embarrassing stories. So you must be picked up on something
- 10:47Speaker 1: that I haven't yet. Yeah, it's called the point of
- 10:49Speaker 1: no return. Like Mark's wife is pregnant right now, she
- 10:54Speaker 1: can't really leave him if she does get piste off
- 10:57Speaker 1: about this story, because like she's with a newborn and
- 11:01Speaker 1: really nobody wants to raise a baby by themselves. She's
- 11:05Speaker 1: very dependent on me right now. So I'd say that
- 11:08Speaker 1: I've got a free pass for a little bit. Maybe
- 11:10Speaker 1: if that was the case, my wife would have left
- 11:12Speaker 1: me a long time ago. So so dear dear gear,
- 11:18Speaker 1: dear gear. But actually, before we get to that, let's
- 11:21Speaker 1: take this quick second to thank our partners at Sitka
- 11:24Speaker 1: Gear and listen to our Sickest Story of the Day.
- 11:29Speaker 1: For this week's Sits story, we're joined by Darton Hardwick,
- 11:32Speaker 1: who's going to be telling us about a memorable hunt
- 11:34Speaker 1: with his younger brother. Yeah. I picked my little brother
- 11:37Speaker 1: up from school on a Friday afternoon and we headed
- 11:39Speaker 1: out to our family farm with my grandparents. And we're
- 11:43Speaker 1: out there for a little while, and we weren't seeing
- 11:45Speaker 1: much action, and then it picked up really right before darkends.
- 11:48Speaker 1: He had a little six pointer come out that he
- 11:50Speaker 1: passed because he was really set on shooting an eight
- 11:53Speaker 1: pointer this year. And as soon as we passed that
- 11:56Speaker 1: buck just above us, an eight pointer stepped out. I
- 11:58Speaker 1: thought it might have been a little are, but he
- 12:00Speaker 1: was real confident in his ability to shoot that far
- 12:02Speaker 1: with his crossbow, so I held it steady for him
- 12:05Speaker 1: and he left there a fly, and he he hit
- 12:07Speaker 1: his mark perfect, and he got his first eight pointer
- 12:11Speaker 1: that night on Darton Hunt. He was wearing sick at
- 12:14Speaker 1: Streatus system. If you'd like to create a sikest story
- 12:17Speaker 1: of your own, or to learn more about Sitka's technical
- 12:20Speaker 1: hunting apparel, visit sitka gear dot com. UH two eight
- 12:25Speaker 1: a t A show. I missed it because I was
- 12:28Speaker 1: staying home here with a wife. You guys were there
- 12:31Speaker 1: and other than you know, seeing some friends and connecting
- 12:36Speaker 1: with some you know, some good partners and whatnot. I
- 12:39Speaker 1: don't think I missed it. I did not mind not
- 12:43Speaker 1: being there. Kick it off, Spencer, Well you probably felt
- 12:48Speaker 1: this way, Dan, but I should have just put on
- 12:50Speaker 1: my name tag that said like Mark is at home,
- 12:52Speaker 1: his wife is pregnant and sick. Why do you say that? Well,
- 12:57Speaker 1: every time I wanted to do to a booth, you know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I'd be like, oh, where's Mark yet? You know I
- 13:01Speaker 1: haven't seen Mark around yet. So you were missed there
- 13:04Speaker 1: by by others, and that was that was evident. But
- 13:09Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm always most intrigued at a t
- 13:13Speaker 1: A by when a company makes something that they haven't
- 13:16Speaker 1: made before. And I don't mean something that's never been
- 13:18Speaker 1: made before, but I mean like when a tree stand
- 13:21Speaker 1: company makes a trail camera like Hawk did this year,
- 13:25Speaker 1: or when an ap who makes you know, stuff that's
- 13:28Speaker 1: typically affiliated with arrows came out with a ground blind
- 13:31Speaker 1: or Garmin, uh you know, electronics comes out with a
- 13:34Speaker 1: both site. So that's when I'm most intrigued at a
- 13:38Speaker 1: t A. And even if they don't, um, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 1: reinvent the wheel or make the greatest ground blind or
- 13:44Speaker 1: greatest both site, it can maybe get other people, uh
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know, other brands churning and doing something different as well.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So that's always most exciting to me is to see
- 13:54Speaker 1: those kind of things. Do you like a t Do
- 13:58Speaker 1: you like everything of about the show and the whole
- 14:01Speaker 1: the whole thing. Uh. This is my third year at
- 14:06Speaker 1: a t A, So I still like a t A.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I imagine that, uh you know, if you get closer
- 14:11Speaker 1: to ten years, well, I can't imagine. There's a lot
- 14:14Speaker 1: of people that are there that have been coming for
- 14:16Speaker 1: ten years or twenty years. So it's fun. I don't know,
- 14:21Speaker 1: it's fun for right now, but maybe not further down
- 14:24Speaker 1: the line. What do you think, Dan, is this Do
- 14:26Speaker 1: you still like it? Man? I tell you what, Just
- 14:29Speaker 1: like everybody right the first couple of years, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I was like, Oh, it's a private show, right, so
- 14:35Speaker 1: no average Joe off this Trigreek can go to it.
- 14:37Speaker 1: So I felt special going to it the first couple
- 14:41Speaker 1: of years and I was just oh, check it, check
- 14:43Speaker 1: this out. And you know, like, oh, I'm talking, I'm
- 14:45Speaker 1: talking directly to a the owner of one of the
- 14:49Speaker 1: biggest companies, or you know, I got to shake hands
- 14:51Speaker 1: with someone that I see on TV. And then like
- 14:55Speaker 1: after a while, man, it all kind of fades away
- 14:58Speaker 1: and you don't even stop op like or care if
- 15:02Speaker 1: you see let's say, like a big name, right. And
- 15:06Speaker 1: you can definitely tell the people who have like it's
- 15:09Speaker 1: their first couple of times going to the A T
- 15:11Speaker 1: A show because you know they're they're in awe of
- 15:15Speaker 1: all this stuff. And for me, man, it was just
- 15:18Speaker 1: like head down, make it to the meetings and try
- 15:20Speaker 1: to cover as much of it as I could, which
- 15:22Speaker 1: I did a horrible job this year. But to me,
- 15:25Speaker 1: I'm now focused more on the you know, the products
- 15:30Speaker 1: than the I guess you'd say flair of it all. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:34Speaker 1: I Hudson agree. Those early years I went it was
- 15:37Speaker 1: just like so exciting and new and like you said,
- 15:39Speaker 1: kind of an awe of everything. I think each year
- 15:43Speaker 1: I've gotten steadily and steadily a little more. Um Oh,
- 15:47Speaker 1: I don't know, jaded or something by it all. Um,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know, like I said, I still I enjoy getting
- 15:53Speaker 1: to connect with friends, see people haven't seen in a while.
- 15:56Speaker 1: There's lots of good stuff, and it is neat to
- 15:58Speaker 1: see a lot of the new products and stuff. But
- 16:00Speaker 1: it's also I don't know. And we we talked about
- 16:03Speaker 1: this baby last year or maybe it was maybe it
- 16:05Speaker 1: was even the year before one of the recent ones
- 16:07Speaker 1: we did when we talked about a t A in
- 16:09Speaker 1: the past year, we kind of talked about how it
- 16:11Speaker 1: gets a little overboard and it's just like everything is
- 16:15Speaker 1: so just I don't know, I'll say it. I'll say
- 16:19Speaker 1: it it's a big dick contest. Well, yeah, there's some
- 16:24Speaker 1: of that, and it's just kind of like just icky.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I don't know how else to put it, but it
- 16:29Speaker 1: just feels like everyone's there trying to sell themselves or
- 16:34Speaker 1: how amazing this next big technology or thing is. And um,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I don't want to beat this dead horse too much
- 16:41Speaker 1: because we've already complained about this in the past. Um,
- 16:44Speaker 1: but it I didn't miss it, like I was watching
- 16:46Speaker 1: all of it, and I just kind of thought to us, so,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you know what, I don't I don't miss being around
- 16:51Speaker 1: the the business pimping out of hunting, um as much
- 16:55Speaker 1: of course, there's there's good stuff that happens there, there's
- 16:57Speaker 1: important stuff that happens that there's good people there. But UM,
- 17:01Speaker 1: it wasn't the end of the world for me not
- 17:03Speaker 1: to be there. I didn't mind, you know, just sitting
- 17:05Speaker 1: and actually because of the fact I wasn't there, but
- 17:07Speaker 1: I was watching the coverage and stuff, it kind of
- 17:09Speaker 1: just gave me like a reason to think about it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: And so I just spent a lot of time like
- 17:12Speaker 1: thinking about you know what the stuff at a t
- 17:16Speaker 1: a kind of represents. Um, it's you know, the glitz
- 17:20Speaker 1: and the glamour and the fame and the the selling
- 17:24Speaker 1: power of big Bucks and the big new technology and
- 17:26Speaker 1: products they're gonna make you a the best big deer
- 17:29Speaker 1: hunt in the world. Um. And then kind of contrasting
- 17:33Speaker 1: that with you know what's what what's the reality of
- 17:37Speaker 1: of why we do what we do and how we
- 17:39Speaker 1: do these things? Um? And again I like new gear.
- 17:44Speaker 1: I like all this kind of stuff too, but sometimes
- 17:47Speaker 1: it goes overboard and I think a t A just
- 17:49Speaker 1: kind of looks like at the macro level, it's kind
- 17:51Speaker 1: of the perfect example of the hunting industry overboard product
- 17:56Speaker 1: everything mania. Um. I don't know if any of that
- 17:59Speaker 1: makes sense. I'm I'm kind of rambling incoherently. Um. But Spencer,
- 18:05Speaker 1: someday you might. You might get what we're saying. You're
- 18:07Speaker 1: so young though, you're so young and ni still well
- 18:12Speaker 1: you need that voice on the podcast. Yeah, as evidenced
- 18:18Speaker 1: by everything Dan has said today, we are so mature. Okay,
- 18:23Speaker 1: So so my complaints aside old old fogy ornery old
- 18:28Speaker 1: man complaining about a t A. Um, there was some
- 18:32Speaker 1: cool stuff right filming in on what kind of stuff
- 18:35Speaker 1: you guys were into. You mentioned a few things. Spencer,
- 18:37Speaker 1: what about you Dan? At a high level, what did
- 18:39Speaker 1: you like about the show? Well, I tell you what.
- 18:42Speaker 1: You scrape off that layer of crap off the top
- 18:45Speaker 1: right that we that we complain about, and you get
- 18:48Speaker 1: to know that secondary level that doesn't get the exposure,
- 18:53Speaker 1: Like take the big companies like Feradyne and prad Co
- 18:58Speaker 1: and the out Door Group, you know, those big conglomerates.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You take all that away and you get down to
- 19:05Speaker 1: that second level of the people who may not get
- 19:07Speaker 1: the notoriety or attention that right there is. Those are
- 19:11Speaker 1: my favorite people because they're there with some real innovation,
- 19:16Speaker 1: um and not you know, some of these other companies
- 19:19Speaker 1: still have innovation as well. I mean, and you know
- 19:24Speaker 1: there's some there's some pretty interesting products, like you know
- 19:28Speaker 1: Primost it's a big, big brand. You know that that
- 19:30Speaker 1: blind that came out that you can you can see through,
- 19:33Speaker 1: but talk talk about that. That's one that's been getting
- 19:35Speaker 1: a lot of and in one second, but that secondary
- 19:40Speaker 1: you know, in some of these smaller booths, you get
- 19:43Speaker 1: to you get to meet um, some people that are
- 19:48Speaker 1: you know, they're out there living at every day like
- 19:52Speaker 1: the hardcore Hunter. And I'll tell you the one I
- 19:55Speaker 1: wanted to lead with is there's this company. It come
- 19:58Speaker 1: came out with a pole, all right, it is the
- 20:02Speaker 1: name of It's a pole and on the end of
- 20:05Speaker 1: the pole is a star screw head. Right. So it
- 20:11Speaker 1: comes with this little bracket that has magnets on it.
- 20:15Speaker 1: And you put this this star screw head into this contraption.
- 20:21Speaker 1: It sticks on and you can put it up in
- 20:23Speaker 1: a tree. Right. Then there's another bracket that goes onto
- 20:27Speaker 1: your trail camera, so you can elevate your trail cameras
- 20:31Speaker 1: without having to take a tree stand or a ladder
- 20:33Speaker 1: or something into the woods with you. Right, it's a
- 20:36Speaker 1: collapsible pole comes collapses down to about oh two two
- 20:41Speaker 1: and a half feet and you can screw it up
- 20:43Speaker 1: comes with magnets. Then you can put that secondary bracket
- 20:48Speaker 1: on your um on on your trail camera. And then
- 20:54Speaker 1: there's a little attachment there as well that you put
- 20:56Speaker 1: the star screw in, and you bring it up to
- 20:58Speaker 1: the magnet that you screwed into the tree, click it,
- 21:02Speaker 1: and then you can position it anyway you want. It's
- 21:04Speaker 1: like a kind of a fluid head where you can
- 21:07Speaker 1: rotate it right, left, up, down, and it is I
- 21:10Speaker 1: look at that application perfect for guys like me who
- 21:13Speaker 1: get their trail camera stolen or a public land guy
- 21:16Speaker 1: who doesn't want his crap messed with. That's pretty cool.
- 21:20Speaker 1: So you gotta you turn it on and adjust all
- 21:22Speaker 1: your settings though on the ground right before you throw
- 21:25Speaker 1: it on that bowl, and then you stick it up
- 21:26Speaker 1: there and it's neat idea. What was it called? Okay,
- 21:30Speaker 1: so the company I'm looking at my business cards here,
- 21:34Speaker 1: it's a second dairy product from a company called Crossbow Defuser. Right.
- 21:41Speaker 1: So there, their main product is a a contraption you
- 21:47Speaker 1: put on a crossbow to help let it down after
- 21:50Speaker 1: you so you don't need to shoot it, right. Um,
- 21:54Speaker 1: And now they came out with this product and it's
- 21:57Speaker 1: not really related anyway to crossbow but if you go
- 22:00Speaker 1: to like crossbow diffuser dot com. Uh, the guy told me,
- 22:05Speaker 1: should all all that information should be on there about
- 22:07Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. Very small company, right, and they
- 22:13Speaker 1: all these guys did was show people how it worked
- 22:15Speaker 1: all weekend long. And um, I have actually a video
- 22:18Speaker 1: of it on the nine finger Chronicles Instagram page if
- 22:21Speaker 1: you want to go check it out, so scroll through that.
- 22:24Speaker 1: But that that's one product where it's brand new, very
- 22:27Speaker 1: small company, very small, you know, like a couple of
- 22:31Speaker 1: couple of dudes out there grinding on public land invented it.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So I found that I found that really interesting. That
- 22:38Speaker 1: is cool. You you're I'm bad about that. I when
- 22:43Speaker 1: I'm usually at the show, I kind of just pay
- 22:45Speaker 1: attention to like the big stuff, because I kind of
- 22:49Speaker 1: feel like when you go down the little booth aisles,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you just don't know what you're gonna get. And some
- 22:56Speaker 1: of it's a little weird, and so I find I
- 22:59Speaker 1: end up just like onto the big stuff because I know, Okay,
- 23:01Speaker 1: this is gonna be important, quote unquote important, so I
- 23:04Speaker 1: just try to hit like the big stuff, and maybe
- 23:06Speaker 1: that that's probably a mistake because then you get these
- 23:08Speaker 1: little gems like what you find. They're kind of tucked
- 23:11Speaker 1: off in the off in the distance, but interesting, Um,
- 23:18Speaker 1: do you have a whole list of little nuggets like
- 23:20Speaker 1: that you found in Well, not not necessarily. I mean
- 23:24Speaker 1: that that's the one that stuck out um big time
- 23:28Speaker 1: for me. And it's a product that I'm actually going
- 23:30Speaker 1: to follow up on and get that guy on on
- 23:32Speaker 1: the nine Figure Chronicles podcast to do a full interview.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But I made it a point this year to just
- 23:39Speaker 1: walk by that. There's in Spencer. I'm sure you saw it,
- 23:43Speaker 1: but there's like two walls that are covered with just
- 23:47Speaker 1: really small booths and it's most of the time they're
- 23:52Speaker 1: new companies or companies that don't get the attention that
- 23:55Speaker 1: they deserve. And I made it a point this year
- 23:59Speaker 1: to walk by all of those and focus on on
- 24:03Speaker 1: some of that stuff. And I didn't you know, I
- 24:06Speaker 1: didn't see a ton, but I did see that one
- 24:10Speaker 1: particular stick out? And dude, I'm I'm going to follow
- 24:14Speaker 1: up on it because I want it. Did did you
- 24:16Speaker 1: see anything that made you laugh? Every year, I feel
- 24:19Speaker 1: like there's always a product that you're just like, what
- 24:20Speaker 1: were they thinking? Was there anything like that? This year? Dude?
- 24:25Speaker 1: I think my mind has become so good at blocking
- 24:28Speaker 1: it out that, you know, I look at it, I
- 24:31Speaker 1: say gimmick, and I walk away, and I like, I
- 24:33Speaker 1: don't even absorb it, right right, I don't know you, Spencer,
- 24:37Speaker 1: did you see anything like that? I'm kind of starting
- 24:40Speaker 1: to get that way in more of these last couple
- 24:42Speaker 1: of years with broadheads. Uh. I feel like that, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: with a lot of this stuff in the artist archery industry,
- 24:49Speaker 1: we're not making big strides anymore as far as things
- 24:52Speaker 1: getting better, and that's one of them that feels like
- 24:54Speaker 1: it's gotten really staggedt and so now it's become a
- 24:57Speaker 1: lot of gimmicky stuff, like just the biggest slicing thing
- 25:02Speaker 1: that you can put on there that looks like it
- 25:03Speaker 1: came out of a you know, a kitchen drawer, steak knife,
- 25:07Speaker 1: and it it's it's getting to be that way. That's
- 25:10Speaker 1: the only thing that I can recall that. I'm like,
- 25:12Speaker 1: oh my god, someone's gonna buy that, and someone's gonna
- 25:15Speaker 1: sell that. But that way with a lot of broadheads anymore. Okay,
- 25:21Speaker 1: So there is a new broadhead out right. It's called
- 25:24Speaker 1: thorn Archery, and I ran into like every row, every
- 25:28Speaker 1: rose has a thorn, right, absolutely, so check this out.
- 25:33Speaker 1: It's kind of like a slip can a slip cam system,
- 25:37Speaker 1: but it has a fully the two blades are fully
- 25:45Speaker 1: enclosed in the housing. Um. A couple of years ago,
- 25:49Speaker 1: there was a company called uh what was it? What
- 25:52Speaker 1: was it called um Epic. Epic broadheads had yep, three blades.
- 25:57Speaker 1: This is much smaller and literally I mean it's it
- 26:03Speaker 1: is a small broadhead. But when you pop that, there's
- 26:06Speaker 1: like a trigger mechanism where the the ferrell goes down
- 26:11Speaker 1: into the shaft and then it kicks out too little
- 26:14Speaker 1: um things that two little pieces of metal which is
- 26:18Speaker 1: the top of the blade, and it slipped cams them
- 26:21Speaker 1: out and dude, I'm telling you right now, that looks
- 26:25Speaker 1: that's that's pretty innovative because there is let's the n
- 26:30Speaker 1: A P tried to do it, but something happened and
- 26:33Speaker 1: that that broadhead didn't make it too. Uh, I guess
- 26:39Speaker 1: mass production and it didn't make it to the the stores.
- 26:43Speaker 1: This one, however, I mean the guys, the guy I
- 26:45Speaker 1: talked to said it. I mean, they're gonna be ready
- 26:48Speaker 1: for this fall. So uh, Thorn Archery is the name
- 26:52Speaker 1: of the company. H What did you shoot this pasture? Dan?
- 26:57Speaker 1: I shot WASP Okay fixed blade, then fixed blade wasps
- 27:01Speaker 1: they I mean, WASP has mechanicals as well, but I
- 27:05Speaker 1: I'm kind of moving away to from mechanicals to go
- 27:09Speaker 1: to fixed blade because you know, a certain stage, Idaho
- 27:13Speaker 1: being one of them that when we hunted, I didn't
- 27:16Speaker 1: want to bounce around between mechanicals and fixed blades just
- 27:20Speaker 1: because I'm hunting a different state. So I figured, hey,
- 27:22Speaker 1: I'm just gonna stick with with fixed blades. I hear
- 27:27Speaker 1: you what I have. Since I've gotten really into archery,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I've made it a point to switch every year. So
- 27:34Speaker 1: for the last five years, I've shot different broadheads. Um
- 27:37Speaker 1: this year I landed on an ap Spitfire Max and
- 27:40Speaker 1: they're They're pretty popular and I killed a number of
- 27:43Speaker 1: different things with them, and I love that. You don't
- 27:45Speaker 1: need that, you don't need a differ Galus with that
- 27:47Speaker 1: whole litany of things you killed again this year? How
- 27:50Speaker 1: look how this year? Look? How we just slipped that
- 27:53Speaker 1: in there. He's like, Oh, yeah, I've used all these
- 27:55Speaker 1: broad and I killed many many things of this year. Well,
- 27:59Speaker 1: we gotta out an hour of talking less, so I
- 28:01Speaker 1: figured i'd get out of the way. Okay, so continue.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Uh So I switched broadheads every year, and so I've
- 28:09Speaker 1: shot a number of different things, and I really enjoyed
- 28:12Speaker 1: the spitfire Max. But I'll try something different again for cool.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Keep keep me post on that, because I've I've kind
- 28:20Speaker 1: of bounced around a little bit. I went. I shot
- 28:23Speaker 1: mechanical for years, and then a couple of years ago,
- 28:26Speaker 1: I switched to fixed blade shot that for two years,
- 28:29Speaker 1: and then I switched back to a mechanical. I'm shooting
- 28:32Speaker 1: the hypodermic rage now for white tails at least. Um.
- 28:36Speaker 1: I can't speak to its effective this this year at all,
- 28:38Speaker 1: because I did not kill a single animal with my bow, um,
- 28:42Speaker 1: much to my chagrin. So um, we'll see how things
- 28:45Speaker 1: go next year. But um yeah, and I'm not jumping
- 28:48Speaker 1: around because like I'm like, oh, this is a terrible broadhead.
- 28:51Speaker 1: That's just one of the most fascinating parts of the
- 28:53Speaker 1: setup to me is the broadhead and so that's why
- 28:55Speaker 1: I enjoy um switching it up every year and seeing
- 28:58Speaker 1: how different broadheads form. So at what point, though, are
- 29:01Speaker 1: you going to like, how many do you to test
- 29:03Speaker 1: until you can look back at your his history and say, Okay,
- 29:08Speaker 1: of these seven years or five years or ten years
- 29:11Speaker 1: worth of broadheads I've tried, now I know that X
- 29:14Speaker 1: is the right one. Like, at what point are you
- 29:16Speaker 1: going to make a decision and switch to the most
- 29:18Speaker 1: effective I don't know. These these last couple of years,
- 29:21Speaker 1: I've really really enjoyed what I've used Spitfire Max and
- 29:24Speaker 1: then I use an ap sling blades last year. Um,
- 29:26Speaker 1: and I've only had one in like these five years
- 29:29Speaker 1: that I really disliked. I won't go into what it was,
- 29:32Speaker 1: but uh, maybe if I have another bad experience with
- 29:35Speaker 1: something that I know I don't like, I'll jump back
- 29:39Speaker 1: to something I know I I really enjoy. But until
- 29:41Speaker 1: then I'll probably just keep switching. Dude, time out. You
- 29:45Speaker 1: don't you don't have to tell if you don't want to.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But part of an accurate you know, like part everybody
- 29:52Speaker 1: right now listening is going man, what product is that
- 29:55Speaker 1: because I want to, like, I would want to know
- 29:59Speaker 1: what you had a bad experience with and what that
- 30:02Speaker 1: experience was. I think that's a fair point and just
- 30:06Speaker 1: realized that this company will never talk to you in
- 30:08Speaker 1: the future, Spencer, and not just kidding, no, I mean
- 30:10Speaker 1: I think it's fair right. Companies sometimes make mistakes, they
- 30:13Speaker 1: have a dud, they fix it. It's good to know. Yeah. Well,
- 30:17Speaker 1: one one reason I don't enjoy like trashing something like
- 30:20Speaker 1: that is because it's such a small sample size, like
- 30:22Speaker 1: one year, you know, one animal, or shooting it, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 1: a couple of dozen times. But that was a ram
- 30:27Speaker 1: cat Um. I was really intrigued by the idea of
- 30:31Speaker 1: that if it goes into something and it can't get
- 30:33Speaker 1: a pass through, that all rip on the way back
- 30:35Speaker 1: out as well. Um. But I didn't love the blade system.
- 30:39Speaker 1: It seemed like they were always different levels of tightness,
- 30:42Speaker 1: as far as one could be kind of loose or
- 30:44Speaker 1: one was very stiff. Um. It didn't seem like it
- 30:47Speaker 1: left great exit or entrances on it. Um. Well, I
- 30:51Speaker 1: guess it cut as you would imagine, uh a fixed
- 30:54Speaker 1: blade would. It wasn't leaving like huge gaping holes like
- 30:57Speaker 1: a mechanical um. But that was one that I just realized, like,
- 31:01Speaker 1: you know, this is one I'd probably never shoot again,
- 31:03Speaker 1: and I didn't love it. If I'm gonna go with
- 31:05Speaker 1: a fixed blade, I would just go with something else.
- 31:07Speaker 1: If I want something similar to this, I would just
- 31:08Speaker 1: go to a mechanical So that was why a ramkad
- 31:12Speaker 1: is just something that I don't have interest in anymore. So,
- 31:15Speaker 1: So you just mentioned something that cued something in my
- 31:20Speaker 1: head that I've been meaning to mention the podcast. So
- 31:22Speaker 1: related to broadheads, UM, something I just realized that I've
- 31:25Speaker 1: heard a lot of people also have not realized in
- 31:28Speaker 1: the past, was with with the new rage broadheads, Right,
- 31:31Speaker 1: these mechanical broad heads. The way that the blazer held
- 31:34Speaker 1: in place is with this collar. There's a little black
- 31:37Speaker 1: plastic collar that is in between the the the insert
- 31:42Speaker 1: and the broadhead when you screwed him. And the way
- 31:45Speaker 1: it works is that when the arrow hits your target,
- 31:49Speaker 1: your deer, it blows through that collar and releases the
- 31:53Speaker 1: pressure on the era on the blades, pushes that collar,
- 31:56Speaker 1: breaks it open, and then expands. Now on that little
- 31:59Speaker 1: black collar. Either either one of you guys seen this,
- 32:01Speaker 1: do you know what I'm talking about. No, no, okay, Well,
- 32:06Speaker 1: for anybody out there who shoots a rage broadhead, which
- 32:09Speaker 1: is probably a decent number of you, this is your
- 32:10Speaker 1: your public service announcement. Really quick. On that black plastic collar,
- 32:14Speaker 1: there are little notches in it. There, these little slits
- 32:18Speaker 1: in the little plastic collar, and a lot of people,
- 32:21Speaker 1: from what I've heard, I've seen this in forums and
- 32:23Speaker 1: videos and stuff, people have been saying, this is not
- 32:26Speaker 1: just me, these little slits. They assume that you're supposed
- 32:29Speaker 1: to when you tighten down the broad head onto this collar.
- 32:32Speaker 1: The way it looks is that you should fit the
- 32:34Speaker 1: bottoms of the two blades into these little slits in
- 32:38Speaker 1: the collar, and that's what I've done. Well, come to
- 32:41Speaker 1: find out that's the exact opposite of what you're supposed
- 32:44Speaker 1: to do, and that has resulted in a lot of
- 32:46Speaker 1: failed openings of the blades because actually we're supposed to
- 32:50Speaker 1: be supposed to line up the solid part of the
- 32:52Speaker 1: collar with the bottom of the blade. So if you
- 32:55Speaker 1: shoot rage, don't line up the blades with the slits
- 32:58Speaker 1: in the collar, line up the blades with the solid piece.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Random But I just had to make sure I mentioned
- 33:05Speaker 1: it because I would have been doing it the wrong
- 33:07Speaker 1: way if someone hadn't told me um or if I
- 33:09Speaker 1: had actually shot something this year, I would have found
- 33:12Speaker 1: out the wrong way. But so I had a good
- 33:16Speaker 1: conversation with someone a while back. It wasn't at the
- 33:19Speaker 1: A T A show, but about manufacturing failures. Right. You know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: you got all these people saying, well, my broadhead didn't open,
- 33:27Speaker 1: my broadhead didn't open. Well, let's say the failure rate
- 33:33Speaker 1: is two percent, right, two percent of all of their
- 33:36Speaker 1: broad heads don't open. And when you think about it,
- 33:41Speaker 1: two percent isn't a or not necessarily a raid. But
- 33:45Speaker 1: any broadhead two percent isn't enough for a company to
- 33:50Speaker 1: probably get worried about. However, two of two million is forty, right,
- 33:57Speaker 1: so forty thousand broadheads may not have malfunctioned. And that
- 34:03Speaker 1: is why you hear like a company like Rage, where
- 34:07Speaker 1: they're selling way more broadheads than everybody else, so they're
- 34:12Speaker 1: two failure is gonna be forty people. And if all
- 34:17Speaker 1: forty people bitch and complain, that's a you know, that's
- 34:21Speaker 1: for us. You're gonna hear that. You're gonna see that
- 34:26Speaker 1: uh and and not necessarily uh. To defend Rage, but
- 34:33Speaker 1: some of the bigger companies who sell a lot more product,
- 34:36Speaker 1: even if I mean that's just you just you're gonna
- 34:40Speaker 1: hear about a lot more than the broadhead company that
- 34:43Speaker 1: sells a thousand packs a year versus a company that
- 34:46Speaker 1: sells packs or whatever. That's a that's a fair place.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I'll never I'll never shoot a rage. Well, that's that's
- 34:55Speaker 1: certainly your choice. There's you know, rage is one of
- 34:58Speaker 1: those products that that gets a lot of opinions on
- 35:00Speaker 1: both sides of the coin. There's a lot of people
- 35:03Speaker 1: that know a whole hell of a lot more than
- 35:04Speaker 1: I do that shoot them like super good, smart, well
- 35:10Speaker 1: thought through archery. Guys smarter than us is what you're saying.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Way smarter than us. But at the same time, there's
- 35:16Speaker 1: people way smarter than us that swear by never shooting them.
- 35:19Speaker 1: So who knows what about that premost ground blind dan
- 35:23Speaker 1: that I saw videos of that that actually looked like
- 35:26Speaker 1: a kind of new interesting idea. I'm telling you what,
- 35:31Speaker 1: there's a good chance I buy that ground blind for
- 35:33Speaker 1: one reason, and that is because I want to take
- 35:38Speaker 1: my daughter turkey hunting this spring, and I can do
- 35:42Speaker 1: it and we can see everything around me. Us three
- 35:47Speaker 1: sixty degrees with the blind shut, and I don't have
- 35:50Speaker 1: to worry about being seen. Well, so explain that. How
- 35:53Speaker 1: does that work? So it's a it's a fabric mesh
- 35:58Speaker 1: that allows you or if you're standing outside of the blind,
- 36:04Speaker 1: you know it's your ten twt away you're looking at it,
- 36:07Speaker 1: it looks like everything's up. You know, you can't see
- 36:10Speaker 1: into the blind, but the moment you step into the blind,
- 36:15Speaker 1: the fabric is somehow reversible, So I shouldn't say that.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Imagine a two way mirror at a police office or
- 36:23Speaker 1: you know, at a police station. Sounds like familiar with
- 36:26Speaker 1: that kind of location anyway, anyway, But that's what it is. Man.
- 36:33Speaker 1: You can see out of this fabric and you can
- 36:36Speaker 1: see three d and sixty degrees all the way around you,
- 36:39Speaker 1: and it is like it is awesome. So you really
- 36:42Speaker 1: you really can't see into it, Like if I'm a
- 36:45Speaker 1: if I'm a deer standing at ten yards, I really
- 36:47Speaker 1: can't see into you see into that, dude, And you
- 36:51Speaker 1: would have to have some kind of light facing directly
- 36:57Speaker 1: behind you and shining through to make some kind of shadow.
- 37:02Speaker 1: But I know, Spencer, did you see that? Yeah? That
- 37:06Speaker 1: that was the biggest complaint that I heard about. It
- 37:08Speaker 1: was said, well, you know the light is going to
- 37:10Speaker 1: illuminate everything, and well, the top of the ground blind
- 37:13Speaker 1: is not that mesh material. So if it's midday or something,
- 37:17Speaker 1: that's not a problem. Um, and you know where the
- 37:21Speaker 1: sun is rising or setting every haunt, it's not gonna
- 37:23Speaker 1: be like, oh my god, it over there tonight. It's
- 37:25Speaker 1: it's setting, and so you you know, like ahead of
- 37:28Speaker 1: time how you need to use this ground blind to
- 37:31Speaker 1: your advantage. So I don't think that's the big deal
- 37:34Speaker 1: as people were making it. Um And as far as
- 37:37Speaker 1: something seeing you through the mesh, if you treat it
- 37:40Speaker 1: like it's still kind of a ground blind, you know,
- 37:42Speaker 1: as long as you're not wearing like doing jumping jacks,
- 37:45Speaker 1: you'd be fine. Yeah. Yeah, it's not a I mean,
- 37:51Speaker 1: it's it's I'm I'm I'm critical when it comes to equipment,
- 37:56Speaker 1: and this is something that I really think would be
- 38:00Speaker 1: it would be worthwhile investment, especially for someone who has kids. Okay,
- 38:05Speaker 1: so are there any other products that either one of
- 38:08Speaker 1: you actually think you're gonna buy this year that you
- 38:11Speaker 1: saw at the show? Am I what I said? Are
- 38:17Speaker 1: there any other products that either one of you saw
- 38:20Speaker 1: at the show this year that you actually think you're
- 38:22Speaker 1: gonna buy it, because you just said Dan that you
- 38:23Speaker 1: might buy that one. You've also said that you might
- 38:26Speaker 1: buy that pole trail camera thing. Um. Absolutely, are there
- 38:30Speaker 1: any other products that you actually think you'll spend your
- 38:32Speaker 1: own money on this year? I guess either one of
- 38:35Speaker 1: you whoever yells first before that. Let's go back to
- 38:38Speaker 1: the ground blind. The biggest problem that besides the lightning
- 38:42Speaker 1: that a lot of people and they had was with
- 38:44Speaker 1: it was that was five dollars. And so that's an
- 38:47Speaker 1: expensive ground blind that could get destroyed by a bear
- 38:51Speaker 1: or whipped into a fence or something like that. So
- 38:55Speaker 1: that needs to be stressed as well, that this isn't
- 38:58Speaker 1: you know, a ground blind that you can just go
- 39:01Speaker 1: buy on a whim for for a hunter and fifty
- 39:03Speaker 1: dollars and uh So, But as far as things that
- 39:08Speaker 1: I think I would buy, I was really impressed by
- 39:11Speaker 1: what Havevlon did this year. They made a knife that
- 39:14Speaker 1: has like six blade options I think, um that go
- 39:17Speaker 1: from everything like a big filet knife, uh down to
- 39:21Speaker 1: it like a smaller blade knife that you would use
- 39:23Speaker 1: to get a deer and with a lot of options
- 39:26Speaker 1: in between, and it was like a hundred dollars and
- 39:28Speaker 1: it could literally be the last knife that you ever
- 39:31Speaker 1: need to get just because it was so versatile. So
- 39:34Speaker 1: that's something that I would can seriously consider buying so within.
- 39:39Speaker 1: So for people that aren't familiar with Havalon knives, correct
- 39:41Speaker 1: me if I'm wrong here, but you know that the
- 39:43Speaker 1: original Havelon was like one of the original replaceable blade
- 39:47Speaker 1: knives where you can it's basically a scalpel blade that
- 39:50Speaker 1: you could pop off and put a brand new scalpel
- 39:52Speaker 1: blade on, so you always have this absolutely razor sharp knife.
- 39:56Speaker 1: And so if I saw that video you posted, the
- 39:58Speaker 1: right spencer Havevlon's most recent knife now has replaceable blade
- 40:03Speaker 1: as well. But now it's not just the small scalpel
- 40:06Speaker 1: Now they've got different sizes, different strengths, so you could
- 40:09Speaker 1: use this for different applications. Is that right? Yeah, exactly.
- 40:14Speaker 1: And if you were somebody like me who's really poor
- 40:16Speaker 1: at keeping knives sharp, then this is perfect because that
- 40:21Speaker 1: just won't be a problem. You'll always have another blade
- 40:23Speaker 1: you can change into. Or if you do a number
- 40:26Speaker 1: of different things outdoors, like come springtime, if you're gonna
- 40:29Speaker 1: be fishing and turkey hunting, things like that, camping. This
- 40:35Speaker 1: is a great knife to have. It cleans out easy,
- 40:37Speaker 1: and like I said, it's so unique that you can
- 40:40Speaker 1: do a diverse number of things with it. Yeah, I
- 40:42Speaker 1: also saw that this year. Um. It also has a
- 40:46Speaker 1: push button to to pop off the blade, when in
- 40:49Speaker 1: the past you had to kind of pry it off.
- 40:51Speaker 1: It was kind of funky how the past havalons were. Um,
- 40:54Speaker 1: I think that Garment or some other companies started using
- 40:58Speaker 1: this push button things, so it seems like have a
- 40:59Speaker 1: lot on is taking that too. Is that did you
- 41:02Speaker 1: see that? Yeah, the push button I believe is new
- 41:05Speaker 1: for them in the past. Like you said, you needed
- 41:07Speaker 1: appliers to get the other blade off, so that could
- 41:12Speaker 1: be something that I'm overlooking that the push button maybe
- 41:15Speaker 1: isn't the best way to do it. But as far
- 41:18Speaker 1: as I can see, you're not gonna lose a limb,
- 41:21Speaker 1: you know. I like the push button. That makes it
- 41:24Speaker 1: easier to get those on on. My might worry with
- 41:26Speaker 1: the old ones, and I have I have one of
- 41:28Speaker 1: the old ones and I like it a lot still. Um,
- 41:30Speaker 1: but I always worried, like you're in the middle of
- 41:33Speaker 1: butchering a deer couring an elk. The blade dolls. You
- 41:37Speaker 1: gotta get the new one on, and your fingers are
- 41:39Speaker 1: all bloody and slippery, and you're you're messing around trying
- 41:42Speaker 1: to get this blade off, and if one of your
- 41:44Speaker 1: fingers slips and hits that blade, I mean they are
- 41:48Speaker 1: so sharp. Um. The push button idea seems to be
- 41:52Speaker 1: a safer way to get those blades off and on.
- 41:53Speaker 1: So I like that. Yeah, if if I had to
- 41:57Speaker 1: summarize a t A with just my favorite product in general,
- 42:00Speaker 1: would be it? For sure? Nice? Anything else you guys
- 42:03Speaker 1: are gonna buy before we dive into other things you
- 42:07Speaker 1: don't not necessarily buy. But there is a this year.
- 42:15Speaker 1: I don't know about you, Spencer, and maybe this is
- 42:17Speaker 1: I'm transitioning for you, and I don't mean to mark,
- 42:20Speaker 1: but the there is a lot of ozone companies that
- 42:24Speaker 1: have showed up this year. There was a ton of
- 42:27Speaker 1: scent companies that have popped up, whether that is you know,
- 42:31Speaker 1: like attractants or um, you know, cover spray. And I
- 42:36Speaker 1: noticed that compared to last year, there were a lot
- 42:40Speaker 1: less bow manufacturers there really, yes, humph were there any
- 42:46Speaker 1: of the big ones? Not there? Um, No, like all
- 42:50Speaker 1: the big ones are there, like so Matthew's PSC. Uh
- 42:55Speaker 1: why why am I only thinking of two right now?
- 42:57Speaker 1: But Elite was there, Martin. They're going through a rebranding there.
- 43:02Speaker 1: They've been sold and then purchased, so they were there.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Gear Head was there, um Bo Tech was there, Hoy
- 43:11Speaker 1: was there. You know, so all the big names were there,
- 43:13Speaker 1: but the second and third tier archery uh companies were
- 43:17Speaker 1: not there last year because I think, uh, last year,
- 43:21Speaker 1: my buddy Ryan I had him go and shoot a
- 43:25Speaker 1: lot of you know, as many bows as he could
- 43:27Speaker 1: possibly shoot, compound bows as he could shoot, and it
- 43:30Speaker 1: took him almost the entire three days to do that.
- 43:34Speaker 1: This year, he it took him like a day and
- 43:38Speaker 1: a half. So there he shot maybe twenty less bows
- 43:43Speaker 1: this year. And that's not twenty less companies, but twenty
- 43:47Speaker 1: less bows. So um. He he was telling me, man,
- 43:52Speaker 1: there's that there's hardly any there's hardly any like newer
- 43:58Speaker 1: companies or some of the smaller ones from last year
- 44:01Speaker 1: that either probably had to fold because there's two million
- 44:04Speaker 1: less hunters over the course of the past year. So
- 44:08Speaker 1: you know, that has to translate into loss of some
- 44:12Speaker 1: kind of industry. Yeah, I wonder what that's about. If
- 44:16Speaker 1: it's if it's that, or if it's just just the
- 44:21Speaker 1: the might of the big companies that just squashing that
- 44:25Speaker 1: just because there's I don't know. It's a good question.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I don't know. Um, do you have an answer, Spencer? Uh? So,
- 44:36Speaker 1: last year I did a big A TA review for
- 44:38Speaker 1: North American Deer Hunter magazine, and one of the things
- 44:41Speaker 1: was that I pulled some quotes, um from some of
- 44:44Speaker 1: the A T A organizers and they had talked about
- 44:46Speaker 1: in like the last five years or even over the
- 44:48Speaker 1: last ten years, that the fastest growing thing at their
- 44:52Speaker 1: event has been crossbows. And so maybe that's it that, um,
- 44:56Speaker 1: the space that would normally be bought by a bow
- 45:01Speaker 1: company is now being bought up by crossbowl companies instead.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Or it could be the same way for hunters that
- 45:08Speaker 1: people who were hunting with bow was five years ago
- 45:10Speaker 1: or now crossbowl hunters. So I definitely have an effect
- 45:13Speaker 1: on it. Did you guys see a lot of crossbows
- 45:16Speaker 1: at the show? Is that a big thing this year?
- 45:19Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, it's noticeable. Yeah, yeah, they're there. But
- 45:23Speaker 1: I mean I don't have any crossbowl experience. That's something
- 45:26Speaker 1: that you know, usually just walk right past and and
- 45:29Speaker 1: don't notice, so I would have a good add answer
- 45:32Speaker 1: about any new crossbowl developments or anything like that. Yeah. So,
- 45:38Speaker 1: the big thing that I saw so much about from
- 45:41Speaker 1: a distance seeing online, the thing that everyone seemed to
- 45:44Speaker 1: be talking about, was this new site made by Garmin thing.
- 45:51Speaker 1: It's called the zero x e er Oh I believe
- 45:54Speaker 1: I remember being and this site, for whatever reason, got
- 46:01Speaker 1: me thinking about the age old question that we have
- 46:04Speaker 1: debated here a lot in the past, especially me and Dan,
- 46:08Speaker 1: which is when it comes to technology and hunting, when
- 46:12Speaker 1: is it too much like where do you draw the line? Um?
- 46:17Speaker 1: And I don't know why this made me think that,
- 46:19Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that I think that's the case
- 46:21Speaker 1: of this archery set or not. I don't know, um.
- 46:24Speaker 1: But I'm gonna explain this site and then I gonna
- 46:27Speaker 1: get you guys thoughts on it. What what you thought about,
- 46:29Speaker 1: what people were saying about, and correct me if I'm
- 46:31Speaker 1: wrong on any of this. But the basic gist of this,
- 46:33Speaker 1: from the little product of video I saw and from
- 46:35Speaker 1: people posting on it, is that this is a site
- 46:38Speaker 1: just like any other site that attaches to your bow,
- 46:41Speaker 1: but it has a built in range finder in it.
- 46:43Speaker 1: So you draw back your bow, you point your site
- 46:47Speaker 1: at a deer, and you press a little button on
- 46:50Speaker 1: your um riser and it ranges that deer and it
- 46:53Speaker 1: shows you the range right there on your on your
- 46:55Speaker 1: site says excuse me, it says thirty two yards, but
- 47:01Speaker 1: then different than you know any other rest where you
- 47:05Speaker 1: would range it. And then you see it's thirt or
- 47:07Speaker 1: two yards, and you find your thirty yard pen and
- 47:09Speaker 1: you put the thirty yard pin on the deer. This
- 47:12Speaker 1: site ranges it and then it uses l e ed
- 47:16Speaker 1: like it creates a little led light where your rest
- 47:21Speaker 1: excuse me, where a site pin usually would be. That's
- 47:24Speaker 1: set exactly for that range. So it creates it creates
- 47:27Speaker 1: a pin out of an LED light set right where
- 47:29Speaker 1: you need to aime, so you don't even really need
- 47:30Speaker 1: to think about where you aim. You just draw back,
- 47:32Speaker 1: click the button, and it puts a pin where you
- 47:35Speaker 1: need to aim at. That is the gist of this
- 47:38Speaker 1: new site. UM and I did I describe that accurately?
- 47:44Speaker 1: First off? And what were your thoughts? What what we're
- 47:47Speaker 1: hearing from people that actually saw it, looked at it,
- 47:50Speaker 1: Uh Dan, what did you think? First? Oh Man? I
- 47:55Speaker 1: held it. I played around with it. It's unique, it's awesome. Uh,
- 48:02Speaker 1: it's a thousand dollars, it's heavy. Uh. I played around
- 48:08Speaker 1: with it and instantly realized that as hunters we have
- 48:14Speaker 1: to deal with imperfect shots. And this from what I gathered,
- 48:20Speaker 1: this device that's on your bow has to be held.
- 48:25Speaker 1: You have to be straight, you know, you have to
- 48:28Speaker 1: be held still. You have to be I mean, it's
- 48:32Speaker 1: not like I'll just cut to the to the chase.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Here in the moment of truth, you're trying to do
- 48:41Speaker 1: this with maybe a little torque in your wrist or
- 48:44Speaker 1: your you know, you're a deer's moving left and right,
- 48:47Speaker 1: left and right. I I felt like that machine couldn't
- 48:51Speaker 1: keep up with how fast everything goes down. And therefore
- 48:57Speaker 1: I don't think it has I I personally don't think
- 49:01Speaker 1: I would ever use it because in the moment of truth,
- 49:05Speaker 1: after you've maybe took a range finder and ranged some trees,
- 49:09Speaker 1: or you know, you ranged a trail beforehand, and then
- 49:13Speaker 1: you're trying to do you know, pull back, hit the button,
- 49:18Speaker 1: try to get everything lined up. You're looking, whether you're
- 49:21Speaker 1: looking through a peep or not, and this this button
- 49:25Speaker 1: is jumping around on this digital screen, not button, but
- 49:29Speaker 1: the uh this dot where you're supposed to aim the pin,
- 49:32Speaker 1: so to speak. And then if there's a little torque
- 49:35Speaker 1: in your wrist, then there's this little circle with these
- 49:38Speaker 1: red arrows pointing to it saying that Okay, now you're centered.
- 49:42Speaker 1: So now instead of thinking time to shoot, you're actually
- 49:48Speaker 1: your brain is now having to think of one, possibly
- 49:51Speaker 1: two or three more things before you can uh pull
- 49:55Speaker 1: the trigger and shoot. So it's a hard pass for
- 49:58Speaker 1: me man playing Devil's advocate. Though, if you didn't have that,
- 50:02Speaker 1: if you had a regular site, don't you in that
- 50:06Speaker 1: same moment, don't you also need to pulp your range
- 50:08Speaker 1: finder with one hand, range the deer, figure out what
- 50:10Speaker 1: ranges is yet, now find the proper pin on your
- 50:14Speaker 1: on your site. Line that up. Now you still need
- 50:17Speaker 1: to make sure you're not talking your bell. You still
- 50:19Speaker 1: need to make sure you're holding it properly and straight,
- 50:20Speaker 1: because if you don't do those things, your arrow is
- 50:22Speaker 1: not gonna go where you're aiming anyways. Um So aren't
- 50:25Speaker 1: there still the same kind of variables in a in
- 50:30Speaker 1: a regular shot process too? Yeah, you're you're right, Except
- 50:34Speaker 1: on the digital screen there's one dot, there's no reference
- 50:39Speaker 1: point for anything else. So if if that technology, you know,
- 50:45Speaker 1: you range and then that deer takes a quartering away
- 50:48Speaker 1: or comes quartering into you, and that and then you
- 50:51Speaker 1: have to try to get that button again. When I
- 50:53Speaker 1: know that if a deer takes you know, four steps
- 50:57Speaker 1: toward me, I can I can mentally play around with
- 51:00Speaker 1: that a little bit. I just I just feel that
- 51:03Speaker 1: in the moment of truth, and if for anybody who
- 51:05Speaker 1: may get a little excited and have buck fever, it's
- 51:08Speaker 1: just I don't know, man, it's almost too much technology. Yeah,
- 51:14Speaker 1: what do you think, spencer? Uh yeah, kind of holding
- 51:17Speaker 1: it and messing around with it. It it felt like
- 51:20Speaker 1: a toy and I think that, you know, somebody could
- 51:23Speaker 1: treat it as so or that's how it should be treated.
- 51:25Speaker 1: This is something you take to the range and see
- 51:27Speaker 1: if you can, you know, hit a three D target
- 51:31Speaker 1: at a harder twenty yards or something like that. But
- 51:33Speaker 1: for real world hunting, UM No, I wouldn't be interested
- 51:37Speaker 1: in Uh. I wouldn't be mad either if I was,
- 51:41Speaker 1: Like if I knew the neighbor was using long I
- 51:43Speaker 1: would be like, that son of a bitch is cheating. Um.
- 51:47Speaker 1: But I would have a fear that this could lead
- 51:50Speaker 1: people to taking shots that they're not capable of that
- 51:53Speaker 1: most people on capable of. If you went analot hunting
- 51:57Speaker 1: and all of a sudden you have something thing that
- 52:00Speaker 1: allows you to take a shot at ninety five yards
- 52:04Speaker 1: or something like that, problem and you're saying that's because
- 52:06Speaker 1: like all you gotta do is aim at it hit
- 52:08Speaker 1: the button and it says, okay, here's exactly where you
- 52:10Speaker 1: need to aim for nine yards, right, Yeah, all of
- 52:13Speaker 1: a sudden you have a ninety five yard pin or
- 52:14Speaker 1: you have a hunter and yard pin. I think that's problematic. Um,
- 52:19Speaker 1: But I don't know how much this is going to
- 52:22Speaker 1: change the industry that it's been talked about like that,
- 52:25Speaker 1: But I don't think it's going to have a big
- 52:26Speaker 1: impact at the end of the day. It's an interesting point.
- 52:29Speaker 1: So did you does this at all make you? Guys
- 52:34Speaker 1: ask that question to like, just have we gone too far?
- 52:38Speaker 1: I mean, and you could you could say, I mean,
- 52:41Speaker 1: you could say this about a whole lot of things.
- 52:42Speaker 1: You can say this about certain things. I use UM like,
- 52:47Speaker 1: I don't know, we've we've talked about this in the past,
- 52:49Speaker 1: and I feel like we all need to draw a
- 52:51Speaker 1: line in the sand for ourselves in different places. Um.
- 52:55Speaker 1: But I don't know for some reason, I'm not knocking
- 52:57Speaker 1: the company or whatever. It's a it's an innovative interesting
- 53:00Speaker 1: to you. UM. But I felt the same way I felt,
- 53:02Speaker 1: even though I didn't actually get to try to use it.
- 53:04Speaker 1: I just felt like, I don't. I don't like that.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I don't, I don't all right, for me, it wouldn't
- 53:09Speaker 1: feel like something i'd feel comfortably using. Just felt like
- 53:13Speaker 1: crossing some kind of threshold for me, some intangible threshold.
- 53:16Speaker 1: I don't know if that makes any sense. Um. And
- 53:19Speaker 1: maybe it's hypocritical say that there's some threshold here for
- 53:23Speaker 1: me with this digital site. But then I use something
- 53:28Speaker 1: like osanics that blows this chemical into the air that
- 53:31Speaker 1: can help may not be um scented by as many deer. Um,
- 53:36Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean this whole idea, this whole
- 53:38Speaker 1: Seeing this product and then watching a t from Afar
- 53:40Speaker 1: this year just got me thinking about that question a
- 53:43Speaker 1: little more this year, like how far is too far?
- 53:46Speaker 1: When are we kind of losing the big When are
- 53:49Speaker 1: we losing the moral of the story? Um? Did you
- 53:53Speaker 1: do you get either you guys want to feel that
- 53:55Speaker 1: way at all. I did, except and you know what
- 54:00Speaker 1: if if that if that product was cheaper for some like,
- 54:06Speaker 1: you know, a thousand dollars, man, a thousand dollars. So
- 54:11Speaker 1: when I when something costs a thousand dollars, it has
- 54:15Speaker 1: to it has to function at a very high level
- 54:20Speaker 1: for me, right and just playing around with it. When
- 54:24Speaker 1: I was hitting that button, pointing it, trying to be
- 54:27Speaker 1: as straight as possible, it was right next to the
- 54:29Speaker 1: Reinhardt target um booth. So I was ranging it and
- 54:34Speaker 1: I was getting like ten yards fifteen yards, you know,
- 54:37Speaker 1: like random yardage, and I knew it was further than
- 54:39Speaker 1: ten yards away, So I I wasn't sold on it instantly.
- 54:45Speaker 1: That tells me that the technology is just not there
- 54:48Speaker 1: yet for it to be this is this is something
- 54:51Speaker 1: that's going to be like first to market. Right there's
- 54:54Speaker 1: other range finder sites on the market and they they're
- 54:59Speaker 1: they're just it's not at The technology isn't where it
- 55:03Speaker 1: needs to be right now for me to be sold
- 55:06Speaker 1: on it. In the future maybe, but right now, I
- 55:09Speaker 1: don't think that garment, uh, that garment product is all
- 55:13Speaker 1: that's made up to be, man, I think it's I
- 55:16Speaker 1: think it's it's cool to see a company taking a
- 55:18Speaker 1: risk and trying something new, like really pretty different. I
- 55:21Speaker 1: mean that's cool. I mean sometimes we complain about how
- 55:24Speaker 1: it feels like everything we see coming out is just
- 55:26Speaker 1: this tiny little iteration pretty much the same thing as
- 55:29Speaker 1: last year. But now they're saying it's the best new
- 55:31Speaker 1: things since sliced bread. So I don't you know, you
- 55:34Speaker 1: gotta kind of give them credit for trying something different.
- 55:36Speaker 1: That's cool. Oh yeah, I mean that's what keeps the
- 55:38Speaker 1: industry alive, right, So there's something we said for that.
- 55:43Speaker 1: But is there any is there any proct out there
- 55:46Speaker 1: right now? Guys? It makes you feel that like ick,
- 55:48Speaker 1: feeling like maybe this is too far when it comes
- 55:52Speaker 1: to this technology question that I'm kind of pondering right now,
- 55:59Speaker 1: just me. I don't know, man, I mean, what about
- 56:04Speaker 1: in ozonics and how I use ozone is as as
- 56:11Speaker 1: far as I will go, as probably as far as
- 56:14Speaker 1: like electronics is concerned. You know, if a company came
- 56:18Speaker 1: out with with an invisible cloak, you know, it's like
- 56:22Speaker 1: it's something that you throw over top of yourself, hit
- 56:24Speaker 1: a button and animals see right through you or I
- 56:28Speaker 1: don't know, for me, hunting is a chess game, right,
- 56:32Speaker 1: so there is the possibility of failure. Um, And I
- 56:37Speaker 1: you know, if osonics worked so well that like it it,
- 56:44Speaker 1: I don't know it was it was a pent effective
- 56:46Speaker 1: within a forty yard range. Let's say that might change
- 56:50Speaker 1: my That might change my my feelings about it, but
- 56:53Speaker 1: it's not. And a majority of the products that I use,
- 56:59Speaker 1: you still to use your brain and you still have to,
- 57:04Speaker 1: I guess know how to hunt in somewhat shape or form.
- 57:08Speaker 1: It's funny, yeah, And it's funny you say that because
- 57:10Speaker 1: I kind of feel the same way, Like how ironic
- 57:13Speaker 1: and backwards? Is it that the qualifying criteria we're looking
- 57:17Speaker 1: at to determine whether or not we want to use
- 57:20Speaker 1: a product like ozonics is make sure it doesn't work
- 57:23Speaker 1: a d percent at the time. As long as it
- 57:26Speaker 1: doesn't work all the time, I'm in. But I kind
- 57:30Speaker 1: of agree with you a little bit on that. Like
- 57:32Speaker 1: I feel like if it was something that took away
- 57:34Speaker 1: the challenge and the fair chase element of it, and
- 57:37Speaker 1: if it was easy, then I think I would have
- 57:39Speaker 1: a serious concern with it. Um, I still screw up
- 57:43Speaker 1: so much of the time and get you know, I
- 57:45Speaker 1: make so many mistakes and fail so often that it's
- 57:48Speaker 1: it's very clear for anyone watching what I'm doing that
- 57:50Speaker 1: I don't have too much technology. Um, but but I
- 57:55Speaker 1: think it's an interesting point what we're gonna say with Spencer.
- 57:58Speaker 1: I just kind of same thing Dan said that, I
- 58:00Speaker 1: feel like hunting with a vertical bow is already, um,
- 58:04Speaker 1: you know, so difficult that I don't think there's anything
- 58:06Speaker 1: on the market that makes it way way easier at
- 58:09Speaker 1: this point in this site. Some people might think that,
- 58:12Speaker 1: but that that's really not the case. This doesn't make
- 58:14Speaker 1: it like, you know, you're guaranteed to heartshot something at
- 58:18Speaker 1: sixty yards. So I don't think we have any products
- 58:22Speaker 1: like that that yet that really make you rethink what
- 58:26Speaker 1: hunting with a compound bow is. I mean, if you
- 58:30Speaker 1: want to go taking a step further and think of
- 58:35Speaker 1: a product that is so effective that it's almost you're
- 58:40Speaker 1: guaranteed to kill a deer or or get in the
- 58:44Speaker 1: general area of a deer, why not go hunt a
- 58:48Speaker 1: high fence operation? Right? You know what I mean, there's
- 58:51Speaker 1: there's there's not really a difference there. Yeah, but but
- 58:57Speaker 1: but yeah, yeah, you get you could look at anything though,
- 59:02Speaker 1: and say, like everyone's going to draw their lines somewhere different.
- 59:05Speaker 1: So like you and I might say, well, we're gonna
- 59:09Speaker 1: use a compombo and we can kill something out to
- 59:12Speaker 1: forty yards or whatever it might be. Um, that seems
- 59:16Speaker 1: like a fair and reasonable use of archery equipment or
- 59:18Speaker 1: something like that. And then we might see someone else
- 59:21Speaker 1: by one of these new fancy crossbows that even now
- 59:25Speaker 1: is being advertised as being able to kill at a
- 59:27Speaker 1: hundred yards or something with an arrow. Um, someone might
- 59:30Speaker 1: think that's okay for them. Um, I don't know. There's
- 59:35Speaker 1: just there's all sorts of things like that that make
- 59:37Speaker 1: me wonder. There's things like when it comes to long
- 59:39Speaker 1: range shooting with rifles, even shooting deer at yards and
- 59:44Speaker 1: crazy stuff like that. Um, what about trail cameras that
- 59:49Speaker 1: not only can send you stuff on your cell phone
- 59:52Speaker 1: right away, but how long until they live stream your
- 59:55Speaker 1: tree steam? Sooner than we think? I bet? Oh for sure?
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, technology is already there, Yeah exactly. So I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: mean I feel like we're gonna be looking at this
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: question more and more going forward, because already we have
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: and people have been looking at this question forever, right,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: I mean thirty years ago there were guys that looked
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: at bows with wheels on him and said, that's way
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: too much technology. You're taking away the essence of the hunt.
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: It's unfair to have this fancy contraption. Um. And then
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: when crossbells came out, the same thing, and when trail
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: cameras first came out, maybe people felt the same way.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: So I've got no answers on it. Um. I'm gonna
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: tell you what I feel real quick, and that is
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Boone and Crockett. I think it was last year the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: year before made a statement about long range shooting. And
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: look for some of these companies to step in and say,
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: if you use this kind of contraption while you're hunting,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: it will not go in our record books. Okay. That
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: the white tail industry today thrives off of inches and
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: being able to claim that you've killed a giant deer. Okay,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: if that deer can't be entered into a record book
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: because you used a product, I don't think that. I
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: think there there is technology will halt at some point
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: if one of these companies or one of these organizations say, okay,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: well you used a hyper thruster arrow whatever you know,
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: it has propellant it's a propelled it has a rocket
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: engine in it or whatever, that doesn't count. I think
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: that's an interesting point. And if we're talking about ironies,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: how ironic would it be that the what I think
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: is a misguided obsession with antlers and obsession over the
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: just killing the biggest buck in the world all the time? Right?
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: That that crazy that we you know, sometimes we worry
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: can get to be too much. How funny is it
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: that that craze to be able to get the highest
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: scoring buck results in putting some type of hamper on
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: technology use, Like it's like kind of the two sides
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: of the same coin stopping the progress of the other. Well,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's happening right now. You know,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: we have these conversations with each other, like, hey, look
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: at this guy. He shot a three two year old
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: at a high fence operation. No one gives a shit
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: about it because it's a high fence operation. But if
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: someone if Hope and Young or Bood and Crockett says, hey, man,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: you're not allowed to use X product anymore, and someone
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: shoots a deer using X product, look, I I have
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: this feeling. Look for the same type of reaction from
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: a majority of the hunters. Yeah, well, I think it's
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's fair for there to
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: be debate and conversation around this issue, and like people
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: have to draw lines in the sands somewhere. I mean,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: there's like, right, there's a fine balancing act that has
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: to be played here between setting some kind of useful
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: community guidelines and regulations within our own hunting community to
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: make sure that we're going about things the right way,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: to make sure that we're carrying on this lifestyle and
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: in a fair chase, respectable, reasonable manner. But at the
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: same time, though people always like to talk about, well,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: you shouldn't be criticizing other people for doing things the
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: way they want to do it. If it's legal, they
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: should be abill do it. If not, you know, you're
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: you're dividing. You're dividing us, right, And I have no
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: problem if people want to do that, I have no
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: problem if people want to hunt high fence, you know,
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: I don't even I mean, I don't care. If that's
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: what you're into, that's what you're into. Man, it's legal,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: you can go and buy a hunt. I don't care.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: You know, we can we can get into a whole.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: But you know, that's a whole different animal. I'm never
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: gonna do. It's not for me, is it for some people? Maybe?
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Is it harmless? Maybe not? And I think that's where
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: you draw the line. That's where I draw the line
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: when it I can't remember who use this analogy. I'm
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: going to steal it from whoever said it. Apologies, but
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: someone told me the analogy that you know. They say
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: that you shouldn't be rocking the boat every we're all
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: in the same boat together. You shouldn't be criticizing us.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: You shouldn't be, you know, cutting down other people in
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: the same boat with you. But if you're poking holes
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: in the boat with the stupid stuff you're doing, or
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the bad decisions you're making, if you're poking holes in
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: the boat and you're gon sink the whole ship, then yeah,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna rack the boat and throw you overboard. Um,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: someone's gotta someone's gotta stand up for things sometimes, and
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: if we don't, the whole thing is gonna go down.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: So that's why, in some cases, like for me, there's
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: a lot of concerns around high fence operations because that's
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: a ship wrecker I think, um, and maybe there's some
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: products or some uses of products that someday might get
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: to that point too. Like I think one thing, for example,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: drones right off the gate, States have been banning the
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: use of drones in relation to hunting because I think
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: people saw that could be you know a lot of
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: abuse ways that you could use that and immediately lose
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: that fair chase element in certain ways. I think there's
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: gonna be other technologies. They're gonna keep on popping up
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: like that. Um And every year when a t A
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: shows up on the calendar, it just makes me think
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: about this again. UM. And like I said, there's no
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: real concrete answers here to any of these things. But
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: I do think it's a worthwhile exercise for all of
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: us to just be thinking about this, to be kind
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: of looking at the stuff we use, the choices we
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: make as far as gear and technology and hunting tactics
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: even and just thinking through, you know, why are we
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: using this stuff? Is this still preserving the I don't
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: know if I want to say the essence or like
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the the sanctity maybe of what we're doing. Um, I
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: don't know. Spencer, can you can you provide any clarity.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Should we move on? I'm ready to get back to
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: gear Spenser. Always I feel like you, me and Dan
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: just ramble on. Do you listen in the past, Spencer,
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: when you've listened to the podcast before you were, you know,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: part of the team here and doing stuff. Did you
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: listen to us in the past, and just like want
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: to shoot yourself in the head every time me and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Dan would ramble at the beginning for thirty minutes, because
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: all the time when we do rout Radio, you're always
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: throwing in little jabs about how boring me and Dana
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: are when we ramble. Is that was that just painful
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: for you? I'm ready to get back to gears. Okay,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: touche um any other a t A products that we
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: need to talk about before we review some two thousand seventy.
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: But actually, before we move on, let's take a quick
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: second to thank our partners at White Tail Properties. This
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: week with white Teal Properties, we were joined by Andrew Schultz,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: a land specialist out of Illinois. And Andrew is going
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: to be telling us about what to look for when
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: buying a piece of ground with intentions of putting in
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: a small pond. Yeah, it's really attainable, and there's a
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: lot of people that look to do that when they're
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: searching for a piece of ground or the right piece
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: of ground. And a large part of that is what
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: are you intending to use the pond for? I mean,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: is this pond gonna be something that you can fish
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: with your kids or grandkids, um, when you come out
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: to visit the property, or is this pond gonna be
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: the pond that your dream home overlooks when you're building
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: on this property. So first identifying what it is that
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: you're putting the pond in for um. So once you've
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: done that, location is everything. Obviously, if the pond serves
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: a purpose for wildlife, you want it in the best
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: location to do so, where soil is also going to
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: be relevant. Depth is going to be relevant, Drainage is
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: another thing that's relevant. So UM, once you've determined that
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: a property is the right one for you, you know
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: you've got lots of options as it relates to put
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: in a pond. Um, just do your homework ahead of
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: time and figuring out what you want to use it for.
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: Um you know the best purpose and then how to
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: go about achieving your goals. If you'd like To learn
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: more and to see the properties that Andrew currently has
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: listed for sale, visit white tail properties dot com backslash Schultz.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: That's s h U l t Z. Dude, I feel
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: like I'm not covering the A t A properly. If
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I talk about the fashion right this year, last year,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: what was the fatis? It was like last year was
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: like fancy geens, we call them bedazzled jeans. Not so
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: much this year. Right, this year was flannels and flat
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: brim hats. So everyone's trying to copy me then, right,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: because that might be and what I would have shown
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: up on not even have a picture of in a flannel.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: That's good, it's a good look. I can't I can't
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: really pull off the flat bill, but I do live
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: in flannels. Interesting observation. Sanitizer, hand sanitizer, Yeah, lots of
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: hand sanitizer influences going around bad. Everybody was like juicing
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: up rather did you get sick? And one gets sick?
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I was I already had the flu man, so you
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: brought it? Maybe Spencer any final shot shot his way
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: bigger than they said anyone's ever been the shot her in.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: But that's like this times three, and I mean literally
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: this times three and so they always talked about the
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: shot show flew there that you come home and uh
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: just shook too many hands and did too many other
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: gross stuff, drink too many beers that you just get sick.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: So it's a real thing. Yeah, that was one thing
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I didn't miss, was just like, I'm too old to
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: do the a t a thing now where you go
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: out every night for three or four nights straight and
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: then you're up early in the morning going all day.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I was thinking about that too. I was like, oh man,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: thank goodness, I'm not doing that because I would just
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: wreck myself. And uh, it's sad to think that at thirty,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: I think I'm too old, but it's nobody. Nobody warned
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: me that the bars they're open till three am. So
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: it was that was much rougher on me than I
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: that I went in and expecting. Do you remember those days, Dan,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: when you and me were young and wild and we
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: we closed down the bars in Louisville and those other cities. Yeah, man,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: that was fun, but I don't miss them. Like Friday
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: night or no, wait, the first night I was in
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: bed by or back in the hotel by nine thirty
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: the second night was like eleven, and the last night
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: was the latest, and I was out past midnight, but
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: before twelve thirty. It doesn't matter because I was drinking
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: ice water at the bar. So I mean it's like
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: those days are over. Man, How times change? How times change?
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: So all right, Well, I do appreciate you guys covering
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: a t a for us and film in on stuff. UM.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I'll be back next year, probably, I'm sure. So it
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: wasn't It wasn't bad though, to just chill out this
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: year and watch from the sidelines. But what I can
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: talk about is uh gear that we use this year.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: I've been meaning to do this for a while because
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: we get so many gear questions. Um, to just walk
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: through some of the different things that I use and
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: that you guys use, maybe point out a few favorites
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: or a few different new things we tried. UM. So
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: I've got no good chronological or organized way of doing this,
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: So I'm thinking that we just shout out things. Whoever
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: yells first can get the floor and we can talk
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: about something that we like, um, and then we'll just
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: kind of see where the conversation takes us. But I
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: want to point out a product to lead this off
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: that I got sent to me to try this year,
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: and I will never not use this product again as
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: much as I can possibly make sure I will have
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: this product with me in the future. And that is
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: a hawk screw in gear holder thing of a bobber.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: You guys know what I'm talking about, the little things
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: that you screw in to hold your bow or something
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: in the tree, or to hang your binoculars or a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: grunt tube or something off of. And you used to
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: buy these ones that cost like a dollar. You get
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: them Walmart, their brown rubber brown. And what would drive
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: me nuts is that maybe one out of every three
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: of those would have like a blunted tip, Like it
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: wouldn't be a good enough sharp tips, so you can
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: never get that sun of a gun to drive into
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: the tree and bite get the threads won't bite. And
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: so I'd sit there. With certain types of trees, you
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: cannot get this stupid thing in the tree, especially if
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: like you had to reach around the tree with maybe
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: your left arm and being an awkward position, you couldn't.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe this is just me, but I've
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: had this where I get so frustrated trying to screw
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: these stupid things in I got this one from Hawk.
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: I don't know how much it costs, maybe five bucks.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: It's a little it's more expensive, but it's got a
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: really great pointy tip to it, it's got good threads,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: and this thing's drills into any tree. I throw at
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: it the first time I needed, and it just brought
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: me joy. Every time I had to screw in a
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: bow holder, I smile. I was like, God, this is
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: so much less inconvenient than the old one. So that's
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: my product of the year right there, the little screwing
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: bow holder do hicky from Hawk. Anyone who used one
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: of those, Nope, I'm that guy who spends ten bucks
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: for about forty four hangers, and uh I lose them
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: all by the end of the year. But real quick
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: go to and this is I have no affiliation with
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: this company at all. My buddy Ben showed me this
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: bow hanger system at the A T A show. It's
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: called morph pro more I'm gonna say pro bow hanger
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: system and it's by outright outright hunt dot com. Well
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: what is it after? It's a bow hanging system. You
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: screw these things into the tree and then it's like
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: a you know on airlines where they have that connector.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: It's like a slip connector. You pull the top part
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: off and then you can put it back on. Has
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: a male and female end, and then it has this
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: system that you can connect to it. Dude, it's it's
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: pretty badass. I don't know if I really followed your description,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: but that's why I say, let's look at us. Guys
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: need to go look it up and we can move on. Okay,
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: fair enough, it's a Boer system bo Hanger system. Alright,
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: very good. Um so to bow Hanger system recommendations there. Um.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Speaking of things that you put on a tree real quick.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Another thing I tried this year for the first time, UM,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: was the fourth Arrow camera. A lot of guys have
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: been talking about this new camera arm for guys that
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: film their own hunts or who film other people's hunts. UM. So,
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: for the longest time, I used an old muddy camera arm.
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: This year I tried out the fourth Arrow. UM. I
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: didn't use the carbon model. UM. I should have looked
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: it up and seen what the model I'm using is.
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: It's it's the it's the non carbon regular model. UM.
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: What's cool about it? If you film your hunts. What's
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: really cool about it from my perspective is that you
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: can adjust the level and angle of the arm almost
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: infinitely because it works on kind of like a ball
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: and socket type of technology. You know, like like your
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: hip phone. I guess you got this ball in there,
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: and then you can loosen or tighten this ball, and
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: that allows you to move that arm in whatever direction
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: you want, so that you can put this camera arm
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: on a tree, no matter what angle the trees at,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: and then adjust the camera ar. It's just the camera
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: arm to be level and where you need it, much
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: better than the other cameras I've been used in the past.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: That was super nice. UM. The things I didn't like
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: about it was that it seemed to be just a
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: little bit louder than other cameras I've used. Like the
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: arm itself is hollow, I think, and so any time
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: that something brushed against it, like even um, like the
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: cord that connected my camera to the little remote control
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: I used to adjust zoom and record and focus and
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: stuff on the handle. UM, if that brushed against the arm,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: it would just make a loud noise, or if you
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: dinged anything against it kind of echoed. UM. That was
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: a little thing, um, and then it has a ratchet
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: strap on it to secure the whole thing to the tree.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: You have to use a ratchet strap. With my old
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: camera arm, they had a different kind of strap system
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: that used, um oh, what's the word? Oh gosh, I
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: don't know. That one had a more silent strap that
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: Muddy produced that I liked. So if I could get
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: this camera arm with the Muddy silence strap, that would
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: be my perfect camera arm right here. UM. I know
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: neither one of you guys are filming your hunts anymore,
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: so you probably haven't used that. But for the guys
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: that are funny, you mentioned that because I had I
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: sat down at a bar, one of the bars this week,
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: and I ran into a guy that I knew, and
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: he he said the same thing about the fourth arrow,
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: saying that it's it's really loud, but a different type
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: of a different type of loud, not the hollow tube loud.
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: But like their bushings, maybe it's just a one off too.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: You know, we talked about you know, it could be good,
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: could be bad, whatever. But he said it was loud
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: when he's actually using it. Interesting, you're like when he
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: was when he's moving it around, like at the jumps
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: moving around, so it's a little squeaky. Yeah, yeah, I
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: can see that being the case. I mean, it's got
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: some really good things going for it. Um, the adjustment
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: is really really nice, but like anything, could probably use
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: a few tweaks to Uh, what's what do you got, spencer?
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: You've got anything in your mind that you want to
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: talk about. I was trying to think of something that
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I used on all of my haunts, whether it was elk, turkey,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: why tails or shotgun, archery rifle. Uh, and there's not
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: much that crosses over to everything. I can think of
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: one thing, uh, my Sitka incinerator hand muff, and I
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: literally used it on every hunt I had this fall.
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: I just hate wearing big gloves no matter what I'm doing.
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: And I used to wear glomets, which you don't have
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: the kind of the hand muff that you flip back,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: but then it's still a really bulky glove. And I
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: use that for a while and it was okay unless
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: he were like archery hunting, I didn't like it, but
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: the Sitka incinerator mouff I I took it duck hunting
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: when I was in a tree stand when I was
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: haunting Elk and I love that ability to keep my
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: hands warm but not have a bunch of stuff on
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: my hands. Yeah, I I my buddy further he uses
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: one of those further uses one of those mits, one
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: of those what do you call it? It's a met
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: right or incinerator muff muff that's where it's from. Muff um.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: So yeah, it seems like a handy tool. Speaking of
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: sick of gear um and I can't remember if I
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: mentioned this on a past podcast episode or not, but
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: if you are interested in hearing about the entire sit
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: of gear system that I wear in great detail about it,
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: why I wear the stuff I wear, what I like
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: about it, etcetera. I did a YouTube video on it
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: this fall during hunting season. If you go to the
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: wire Dunt YouTube channel or if you search Sitka Gear
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: whitetail review, you'll find that you can get all my
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: thoughts on that stuff. Um. But I want to point
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: out something I wore from sick of this year that
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: I didn't wear for deer hunting. Um. But SIA actually
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: just launched a new category. They launched a new category
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: of clothes kind of just like lifestyle stuff, stuff for
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: training or scouting or just hanging out. Um, And they
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: sent me a few things to use this past year
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: that I just wore all the time when I I
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: was living out of my camper out west, you know,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: on my trips this past year. Um. The Sitka Territory
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: pant is basically like a I don't know how to
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: describe it, like a light, um soft shell type pant.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Probably lighter than what most people would consider a soft
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: shell pant. Just a really light kind of camping or
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: fishing type pant that drives really quickly. Um, really comfortable,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: a little of stretched to it. I wore like on
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: all my hikes I wore when I was fishing. I
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: wore all sorts of things really like that. And then
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: their new Redline performance shirts, so like a T shirt
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: and a long sleeve shirt. Um, kind of like you
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: know what people would wear for like, uh, I don't know,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: outdoor activities in the summer, really lightweight wi sweat absorb sunrays, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: I wore that for all my hiking and stuff. Too
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: great for waking away the sweat. Comfortable, Um, you know,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: just a nice light, convenient piece to wear in non
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: hunting activities. So that was kind of a new thing
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: I wore from them that I did like, um and
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: I'll be interested to see how they expand that line,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: you know, coming years and see if people use that
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: kind of stuff more often. But that was a new
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: piece of gear I liked on that front. Dan, you
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: want to jump on something, well, I'll tell you what
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: this year was different for me because I did I
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: had a lot of change as far as my bow
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: arrow broadhead set up. In full disclosure, the nine Finger
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Chronicles is sponsored by gear Head Bows and Wasp broadheads, right,
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: so just know that before I tell you this. But
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: we did a product review on all the bows at
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: the last a t A show, and like Prime was
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: up there and gear Head Archery was up there, right.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: So anyway, I shot a new bow. I love it, um,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: so take that what it's worth. I shot my new
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: uh Boss four blade broadhead that dude, I love, not
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: huge broadheads, but the smaller broadheads with more blades. Right,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: So it's four blades. And I went to a four
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: fletched arrow and in the front of the arrow it
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: had an outsirt and that arrow was Zeller Arrows and
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: it has an outsurd on the front end, so it
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: it has a little bit greater fo c. Uh, it's
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: a heavier arrow. It's for people, So for people that
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: don't know archery jargon, can you explain what an outsert is?
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: And can you explain what foc you know, very very
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: high level what that means and why that matters? Right? Right, So,
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: an outsirt is instead of it's the opposite of an
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: insert where you screw your broad head into the you know,
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: the center of the arrow. An outsirt is glued into
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: the arrow and then you screw your broadhead into the
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: outskirt and it's just a little extra weight. And fo
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: C is front of center and what when it comes
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: to archery, a higher front o center or front of
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: center fo C means that that arrow stabilizes a little
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: bit quicker. Uh. And you know when you see those
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: slow motions. You know, you guys have both seen the
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: slow motion of an arrow, Uh, once comes off the bow. Yeah,
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: just completely bends. Yeah, it's nuts. Right. So that along
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: with the four fletch on the back of the arrow,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: is supposed to help like straighten that arrow out faster.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: And the what the four fletchings do is uh I'm
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: sure there's people out there who may correct me if
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: I'm wrong, because I am in no way, shape or
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: form like a gear junkie when it comes to arrow
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: set up and all the technical stuff. But it helps
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: create more drag on the back end, which helps also
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: straighten the arrow out. So I was shooting a heavier
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: arrow with uh higher foc and more drag on the
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: back end to get that arrow straighter faster, and so
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: I was had a lot of momentum and a lot
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: of kinetic energy. So did you feel like you saw
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: that um when you were practicing? Did you feel like
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: your group's tightened? Could you notice it or was it
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: just something that, yeah, this is supposed to work, you
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: trust that works, but it wasn't that noticeable. Yeah, man,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: I tell you what I could note. I noticed a difference,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: especially at longer ranges. Um. You know, you practice a lot,
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: and you can have bad form at twenty yards and
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: you can put a group together, but when you're backing
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: up and you're shooting at you know, forty fifty sixty yards,
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: a lot of that matters at that point. So I
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: don't know, I just I felt, and like we talked,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: this is what we talked about a lot whene we
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: talk about gear is confidence, right. I felt really confident
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: with that setup this year, and uh, it allowed me
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: to take the longest kill shot I've ever taken on
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: a white tail, and that was over thirty yards. And
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: I don't know, I just I felt confident using that equipment,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: confident using that gear, and I was able to practice.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: I and I did practice a lot this summer, probably
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: more than I've ever practiced, so UM, that probably helped
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: as well. So yeah, yeah, I I I did a
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: little bit of the same thing and that I UM,
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: I tried to increase my front center by using a
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: heavier broadhead, so I switched from a hundred grain to
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: t grains um to move that foc point farther up.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: And UM, that's something that I think helped to Um.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Are you gonna switch releases this year? Because last year
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: you talked about switching to a hinge style release to
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: use it a little bit, and then you end up
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: saying it's too late to make the switch. Are you
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: gonna make the switch this year or what I'm gonna try? Um?
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: And if anything, it's just gonna be to practice, right,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna use it to practice and practice and then
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: I may just hunt with a trigger release. But um, yeah,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna I'm gonna give that the back
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: tension a try again. Nice Why why why would you
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: practice with it all the time though, if you didn't
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: want to shoot it, what would be the point of
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: practicing with that kind of release and then switching to
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: a trigger puncher. Um, I don't know, man, just because
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: you're still not confident that you well, I've write some things.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: I've just some readings people saying that you know back
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: tension really and if this is just a couple of articles,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I couldn't even tell you who wrote them. But like,
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: a back tension release is great for target archery and
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: great for UM practice. But in the moment of ruth,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: when you I don't know, when you're wearing additional clothing,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: when you're where you know, when you know, do you
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: are moving all around in the timber, it might not
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: be the best possible bet. But I'm sure there's a
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: hundred thousand people out there who are going to listen
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: to this that tell me I'm wrong, right, So that's
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: just one article that I've read. I would love if
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: someone would say, hey, no, dude, you're actually wrong. Uh
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: you know, message me or something. I don't know. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: I've always thought the same thing. So like when I
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: was making a switch to a back tension type release
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: process and when I've been looking at switching to an
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: actual back tension release, I had the same concerns, but
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: have heard from guys who said, no, you actually can control,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: like like our you know Andy may Our friend Andy
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: has been helping me work through some of my archery adjustments,
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: and um, he swears by the fact that he can
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: get a great release whenever he wants it using that
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: kind of back tension release, So I don't know. Um.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Back to bows, though, I switched to new bow as well.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: This year I started shooting the Matthews Halan thirty two
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: and um Man, that was definitely a positive experience of
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: that as well. Now, as I mentioned earlier, I didn't
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: kill anything with it this year, unfortunately, but that wasn't
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: the bow's fault. That was the hunter's fault. Um. But
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: with that the thing I was most impressed with and
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: with the Halan the past couple of years, when Field
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and stream or Outdoor Life did their big bow tests,
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: they went through and tested all these bows on all
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: these things, the Halan and then the Halan third two
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: both finished the number one or number two if I
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: remember right. Overall, I think and then also like as
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: far as quiet, like sound and vibration, it was like
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: tops in those categories, so I knew that coming into it.
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: But that was the thing that stood up to me
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: the most is just how weirdly quiet it seemed compared
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: to pass bows that shot. I never thought I had
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: a loud bow, and then when I shot this, it
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: was just like weird. It sounded wrong because of how
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: different it was, But as I got used to it,
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: I just really liked the fact that was so quiet.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: So that was my big takeaway from it, or just
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: a joy to shoot. Um decided to hopefully kill something
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: with it this year, Um and tell you how that goes.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: But it was a beautiful thing to shoot and practice
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: sessions at least, Um Spencer, what what were you shooting?
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: I shoot a Halon six and I just started shooting
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: that last year and it was kind of the same
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: kind of feeling that it was a huge difference, just
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: noticeably better bow. And it wasn't because the last bow
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: that I was shooting was you know, brand X. It
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: was just because I had an upgraded since, like I
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: don't know, two thousand eleven or two thousand and ten,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: and so seven years of technology on top of that
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: made a huge difference no matter what brand you would
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: go with. But I really loved my Halon six that
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: I had. Nice, nice, Yeah, that's it seemed to get
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: good reviews for most people. And it's hard to go
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: wrong with a lot of these bows these days. I mean,
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: all the new bows from most of the you know
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: the man the reputable manufacturers, they're all pretty darn good bows.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: Um it's kind of a matter of finding the right fit,
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: the right feel for you. You know what your priorities
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: are as far as do I want a fast bow,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Do I want to really quiet bow? Do I want
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: a really small bow? You know, looking at your whatever
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: circumstances you're gonna be hunting in. Um So, there are
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: a lot of great options out there, which is which
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: is great for us as hunters. I think the matter
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: going out there and shooting a bunch right absolutely, man. Okay,
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: before we move on to our next category, I want
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: to take our final break of the day and think
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: our partners at Maven Optics, and you may have seen
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: this across Facebook or social media, but Maybe has just
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: announced that they're launching a new category of products for
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: the brand this year, and that is rifle scopes. And
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: Maybe has been making binoculars and spotting scopes now for
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: a while, but not with rifle scopes. They've got a
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: really appealing new option. This scope has two point five
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: to fifteen next zoom that has two different radical options
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: as Super High End e D class which is extra
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: low dispersion glass. And what this means is that it
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: prevents or minimizes chromatic ambiration, and in layman's terms, that
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: just simply means that you get a cleaner and brighter
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: image and of course terrific performance in low light conditions,
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: the kind of stuff that you want when you're hunting
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: with a high end rifle scope. So if you'd like
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: to learn more about the new Maven r S one scope,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: you can visit Maven built dot com and the scope
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: is available now for pre order, but products won't begin
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: shipping until May and f y I. If you order
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: during this pre order time period, they're currently offering a
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: two dollar off promo, so check it out at maven
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: built dot com category. Well, I don't know, I think Mark,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: I know you you use them, but Spencer, what what
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: tree stands do you use? Well? It depends for my
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: permanent setups or set up set I throw up in
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: you know, the spring or summer and even til winter.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: It is always the thirty five dollar on sale tree
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: stand that I can find it Menard's or Dicks or
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: Cabella's whatever. My mobile set up. My mobile setup is
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: I use a Hawk Helium for both the sticks and
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: the actual tree stand. What do you think about this? Real? Sorry? Dan,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I know you're going somewhere with us, but I want
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: to hear what he thought about that set up real quick.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: I I really enjoyed the sticks I've tried. I didn't
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: buy all the other brand sticks, but my bodies have
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: them and I've tried them out. My favorite sticks were
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: by far the Helium's um. Now stand wise, I didn't
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: notice a huge difference going from Hawk to lone Wolf
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: to you know whatever. I really enjoy the Helium and
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: I think it's a helium xl um. So I like
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: that set up. I don't do a ton of mobile
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: hunts at this point where I have to throw something
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: up in a hurry, but I would feel more than
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: confident that this is one of the better setups out
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: there using the Hawk Helium sticks and Entree stand. Yeah,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: so I'm gonna comment on that because I tried the
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: Helium Xcel tree stand this year and the Helium climbing
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: sticks as well. Um. The stand I liked. It was light, um,
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: and I love the seat cushion, super comfortable seat cushion.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: I thought all that was good. Um. I wouldn't have
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: gotten the Excel version again, just because it's too big
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: of a platform for me. I like like small, because
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: I want something that's just not going to be big
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: on my backpack when I'm packing them in there, and
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: it's I want as light as possible, So I would
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: have gotten a smaller version. I'm pretty sure they have
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: a smaller version. Um. The sticks I didn't like as much. Um,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: They're fine, Like, they worked pretty good. Um, they worked well,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: but it just they didn't fit together as nicely as
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: quietly as some of the other ones. And then and
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: then I've had some issues with the buckle mechanism, the
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: attachment mechanism for the straps that go around the tree. Um.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: I don't know how to describe these, but they they've
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: got like a plastic cook within a spring loaded metal clip.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: And um, number one, it can be loud if they
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: bang against things. Number Two, I had an example where
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: I just I don't even know how to describe how
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: I did this, but somehow I was testing the stick
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: and I clipped this thing onto the other side of
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: the stick around a post in my barn. And the
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: long story short of it is that it's got stuck.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: It got pushed into far I couldn't get the stupid
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: thing off. It was really frustrating. Um. It just seemed
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: like if you could accidentally push this thing in so
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: far that you couldn't get it off again. That was
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: that was a concern, like I may not be the
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: smartest tool in the shed, but if it happened to me,
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: maybe it would happen to other people too. So that
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: was the one other thing. A little bit of an
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: issue with their clip and attachment mechanism. But what are
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: you thinking, Dan, You know what I'm gonna say, right?
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: I mean, the and I was It's not that it
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: was a new piece of gear, but it's it's a
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: it was an experience that I had this year. You
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: know how how I killed my dear walk into a
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: new piece of property with the stand on your back.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: I was a mobile. I was able to use it
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: the way it was designed to be used, and I
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: found success doing it that way. And it's just one
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: of those things where again, you gain a little bit
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: more confidence in your equipment when everything goes right. Yeah, yeah, man,
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: I do. I do love those Lone Wolf stands and sticks.
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: And maybe maybe I'm a little bit critical of the
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: Hawk sticks just because I'm so used to the Lone
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: Wolf set up, like I do love. They call it
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: the Versa button, right, It's just a cloth loop that
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: you put around the button and you tighten it down.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: It's just easy. It's easy. It's pretty quiet. Um. Now,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: my favorite sticks are actually the Muddy sticks. They have
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: the rope camp system. There's no buckle at all. You
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: just put the rope around the tree and then sinch it. Um.
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: That's my favorite stick. But um, but the Lone Wolf
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: stands are still hard to beat for me too. Those
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: are the ones I use for all my mobile setups
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: as well. Um, there's there are there are more and more. Yeah,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: I was gonna say there are more and more high
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: quality portable setups. So like, it's nice to see more
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: companies are focusing on that and putting out lightweight, quiet stands. Um.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: And I think that's because more and more people are
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: hunting that way, right, right, That's what I would assume,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: you know, with it being harder and harder to find
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: you know, private ground or have access to that kind
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: of thing, and people are having to go onto public
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: to hunt. Yeah. Now, Mark, you ed said that you
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: thought the Helium x L was too big. Did you
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: think it like way too much or the platform was
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: too big or what did you think the problem was there?
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: It was just um, it was just the platform is
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: too big. So I I would have liked to get
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: If I'm right, I think I'm right. Correct me if
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: I'm wrong here. But I think that there's a regular
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: healing them and then there's a Helium x L. Am
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: I correct on that. The Helium I believe has been discontinued.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: Well not it, they just haven't been selling them online anymore.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: So I think unless you find them in a store
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: that you won't have a chance to get one, gotcha.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: So I like the Basic Princess, I like the Helium
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: XCEL I liked it. I just wish that I had
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: a smaller version of it because I want the smallest,
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: lowest weight, smallest surface area tree stand I can get,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: because I just want something that I can get through
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: the woods really easy, like when I'm sneaking in a
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: hunt a new spot sometimes like in public land or something,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: I'm like going through briars and crap, and like if
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: there's something sticking way out outside of my backpack on
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: my back that's clipping against branches or down trees or things,
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: that's a pain in the butt. So I want just
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: something as small and as light as I can possibly get.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: So the lone wolf stand I use as the assault,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: which is the really small one. UM. I know a
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: lot of guys like the big platform because they want
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: more space to be able to stand up there and
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: spread the you know, spread out a little bit. Um,
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: I am fine with a small platform, So this is
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: a personal preference things. For the size that it was,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: it seemed pretty darn lightweight. I don't remember what the
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: exact weight on it was, UM, but it did not
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: feel significantly heavier than my long wolf as salt, and
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: it did have a larger surface area, so that was.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: I mean, it was a lightweight. It's nice. UM. I
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: just kind of like smaller, more compact, just from a
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: portability standpoint. Anything else on tree stands. Oh thanks so man, Okay,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: I got touch on optics real quick because I tried
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: two new optics this year. UM. And you know, we
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: work with may even so I'm using Mayven Optics And
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: they came out with a spotting scope this year which
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: I used. Super nice spotting scope. I'm not I can't say,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: you know, I've used every other spotting scope out there.
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: I haven't used all the other all the others and
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: compared them, so I can't say this, um, you know
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: with that kind of context. But what I can say
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: is I used it out there, you know, looking for
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: white tales in Montana. I used it here in Michigan
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: doing my long range scouting for holy Field and in
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: these different deer like that. UM, and it it just
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: does the job really really crystal clear, great performance in
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: low light. I was very happy with that. UM. But
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: the thing that I think is more relevant for white
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: tail hunters, UM is the new mid level by no
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: they came out this year, UM called the C one
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: in the past the past Maven binoculars that I've used
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: their high end optics, so they're pretty expensive, you know,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: a thousand dollar optics more than that. Even the cool
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: thing about Maven was that because they only operate direct consumer,
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: you have to buy them right from their website, they
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: don't have the markups that you see with a lot
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: of other brands that sell in stores, So that was
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: like the kind of selling point. But it was still
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: a high end optics. So those price points were probably
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: more expensive than most white tail hunters want to spend
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: because I think a lot of white tail guys don't
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: think that they need to really fancy optics like Western
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: hunters tend to. Um. I feel like a lot of
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: Western guys are willing to spend thousands of dollars and
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: optics because they spend all day behind the glass, you know,
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: searching out hillsides a mile or two away. But us
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: white tellers, we don't do that that much. Um. So
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: Maven put out this new binocular it's called the C one,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: and it tried to you know, hit the sweet spot
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: as far as price point. So it's only a hun
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: and what they were able to do is they were
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: kind of able to take the same kind of glass
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: and technology that they were using in their higher end optics,
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: packaged it a little bit, you know, not quite as
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: fancy of knick knacks and patty wacks on it that
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: the higher end had, but still a damn good binocular
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: UM that I used for most of this season. It was.
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: It was very very happy with it again, good bye OS.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: I think where you see the differences in low light,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: you know, so if you can, I've had many times,
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: many times were almost you know, at darker after dark
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: you can still see a deer hundred two hundred yards
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: away and tell is that the buck up? And after
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: is that a shooter buck? Is that a mature buck
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: or something? With a really good binocular you can see that.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: I've had that coming really handy with these, so really
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: happy with them. And I think that price point makes
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: it a particularly relevant thing to mention for white tail
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: guys if you're looking for a new binocular that definitely
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: it's a significant bump up from you know, most of
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: your stuff that you're buying at a Walmart. Cabellas Dick
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: Sporting gives the basics, UM, this is a great way
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: to get an improvement, but not spend a ton of money. Um,
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: that was my my optics kind of new tests this year.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys have been trying anything
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: different or have any other things that you'd recommend. No, man,
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: I wish I had any something more groundbreaking. My my
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: setup was other than my arrow setup was pretty much
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: the same from previous years. You know, did you try
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: anything else? Knew at all to Spencer any other gear otherwise?
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: Any any Well, with the optics, I went with a
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: new range finder this year and with the Vortex Impact,
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: And like I said earlier, with that hand off, I
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: like things that cross over nicely that I can take
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: l hunting, deer hunting, turkey hunting, stuff like that. And
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: the Impact for Vortex was perfect because it did angle compensating,
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: so it was great if you're in a tree stand.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: Um it had the ability to range out to like
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: eight fifty, but it could still pick up a deer
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: at like four hundred, so it was awesome for that.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: So it was just another piece of gear that I could,
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: you know, use for whatever. And it was it was
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: really cheap too. I believe it was under three dollars,
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: which for being feature rich like that, you usually don't find,
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: and then the glass was really good on as well.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: I've used some cheaper range finders in the past that
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: you could look through and you didn't know what you
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: were looking at because there's not much for magnification there,
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: and so if you don't have like quality glass, you're
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: just not gonna be able to tell what you're looking
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: at low lights. It was really excited about that and
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: something I'll continue using going forward. Um outside of optics
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: for new I went to a stick and pick mini
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: mount this year. Uh for a lot of my trail
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: cameras and how to go to we are the great planes.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: We don't have a lot of trees, so I hunt
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: a lot of slews. I had a lot of field edges,
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: and the perfect tree just doesn't exist quite often. And
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: these are awesome because a lot of people look at
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: like a trail camera stick and be like, oh, yeah,
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: that one just stabs into the ground or whatever. But
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: the mini mount folds up to be like I don't know,
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: you know, shorter than your arm, and it can fit
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: in the backpack and they're really light. Uh, they can
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: go three six degrees, they can look up or down
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: whatever you want, and so that's become perfect for me
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: for somebody who's really picky about, you know, where the
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: trail camera goes, and it's allowed me to put it
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: in places that I couldn't in the past. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: I use a couple of sticking picks too, and I
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: really like those as well. Handy to have, that's for sure. Um.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: And speaking of range finders, that's something I need to
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: upgrade this year. I haven't changed my range finder in
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: like seven years. I'm using like a really old bushnell
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: that just like you said, Um, it doesn't work well
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: in low light, so I can't see anything in there.
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: The the LED or the l c D numbers and
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: stuff are really dim. It's hard to read that stuff.
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: It's kind of just it's it's maxed out. It's life expectancy.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: So I might have to check out that one you
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: mentioned or some others and and look at some options
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: this year, because that's definitely spotted in an upgrade. Um.
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: One of the big change I added this year. Um,
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: And this is probably my final piece of new gear.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Was I tried and you mentioned this earlier, Dan from
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: the ozone standpoint, everyone's jumped on the ozone bandwagon, you know. Um.
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: And probably the like Ozonics was pretty clearly the first
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: one trying something with that. The second one to the
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: game was this company sent crusher, and they sent me
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: some of their products to try this year. So I
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: used the scent Crusher bag and sent crusher tote um
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: pretty consistently throughout the whole season. Um, And I don't
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: know what I think about them, to tell you the truth,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: I think, uh, I think the concept makes sense mostly
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: um because I have seen ozonics work in the field,
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: Like that's something that I can kind of point to
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: and say, Okay, I've seen a very different reaction from
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: deer when using it versus when not using it, and
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: that's like an impact you can see. So that has
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: made it easy for me to say, yes, I think
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: this helps when it comes to an Zox machine. With
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: a scent crusher bag, you're kind of putting a little
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: more more faith into it because you're doing something to
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: your clothing before the hunt and then going out there
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: in the woods and then hoping it made an impact.
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: But it's hard to it's hard to quantify that, you know, um,
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: So if you're not familiar. Essentially, scent crusher creates bags, closets,
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: totes that you put your clothing in, and then it
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: uh fills that bag or compartment with ozone, which changes
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: scent molecules, breaks down scent molecules to the point where
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: they cannot be recognized by deers human scent um. That's
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: what an azox machine does too, But this just does
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: it to the clothing beforehand. So I put all my
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: stuff in the bag. I ran the ozone every night. Um.
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: I assume it helped. I know it helped. I'm sure
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: it helped some. I just don't know to what degree
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: it helped. You can definitely tell. I would go out
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: in the early season, like I was going out and
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: hunting in Montana in September, and it was degrees and
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: I was just drenched in sweat by the end of
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: the hunt. By the end of the time I hiked
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: to the stand really um, and so that stuff would
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: have a bo smell to it by the time I
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: was done the evening. I would throw that stuff in
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: the bag at night, I would run it for thirty minutes,
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: and the next day you don't smell that bo anywhere
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: you smell. There's that ozone smell that I know. You know,
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: dan um, But there's not the human sweaty stink smelled
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: to it. So anecdotally from like a personal human nose standpoint,
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: seemed to work. Um. I just don't know how that
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: translates to, you know, did it help me five percent
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: more on the field that it helped me two percent
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: more to help more? I don't know. I didn't see
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: like some noticeable reduction in the number of deer that
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: winded me. You know, UM, any damage to any of
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: your clothing. You know a lot of guys talk about
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: the last dick on certain things. Once it stretches, it
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: doesn't go back. Yeah. Man, So that was the next thing.
- 1:47:09Speaker 1: I was going to mention that that was the one
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: major downside. And this can be blamed on me because
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: I knew that this could happen and I just made
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: a mistake. So I've been told, um, the owner of
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: sent Crusher, I think it's the owner of the President
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: had told me that there are certain rubbers um that
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: can be broken down by ozone UM. And so then
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: through people I knew it's Sia and other people that
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: wear sick Of gear, they said that the rubber used
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: in the suspender straps on Sitka gears bibbs. It's one
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: of those types of materials that ozone will break down.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: So I knew not to put my bibbs into the
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: scent crusher tote. I knew not to do that, So
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: most of the season I didn't do that. But get
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: to the rut and I had hunted, you know, days
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: and days and days and days in a row for
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: the full day, all day. And when you get done
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: with a hunt at night, I'm so tired, I'm cold,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: I'm wet, I just want to get inside the house.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: I just want to get home, whatever it might be.
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: And one night I forgot and I just threw all
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: my gear in the toe and turned it on. I
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: didn't think about my bibs. Next day, when I opened
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: up the toad, I've realized there's my bib strap that
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: was like completely destroyed. Um So that happened. One of
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: the straps is okay, one of the straps. I don't
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: know how to describe it. It's just like all the
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: rubber kind of just decomposed almost there's just a little
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: strands of fabric that are still holding it together. Um
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: So that was a that was a serious bummer and
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: a lesson learned. Um, just be aware if you've got
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: any kind of like rubber elastic bib or strap or
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: something that if you're using any kind of ozone product.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: And like you said, Dan, there's a bunch of different
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: companies now they are making containers, generators, different things that
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: put ozone on your clothes and stuff. Be aware that
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: it can damage certain rubbers. Um, and and try to
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: figure out if your clothes or your gear as that
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: and avoid that. Um. Because I kind of ruined a
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: really expensive, nice pair of bibs because I've made that mistake,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: So that was a bummer. Any other final pieces of
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: gear thoughts before we wrap this one up? I'm good man,
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: I don't think so. Have you rambled enough for your
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: spencer on this one. That's plenty for over ninety minutes,
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: so that's really gonna educate some people. Yeah, alright, well
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: then I think we'll we'll wrap it up. Hopefully this
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: coming year, we'll troy out some new things and we'll
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: actually pay attention to them while we're using them, and
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: we'll put together some well thought out, meaningful feedback on
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: those products for the next year rather than having these
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: random off the wall comments. UM. Hopefully there's something helpful
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: here though, So let's just tie Nott on this one
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: and wrap it up, and that is it. So I
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: just want to, as we do every week, think again
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: our partners who helped make all this possible. Big thank
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: you to Sit to Gear Yetie Cooler's, Matthew's Archery, Maven Optics,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: the White Tail Institute of North America, Trophy Ridge and
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: hunt or Maps, and finally, of course, thank you all
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: for sticking with us on this one, to hearing us
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: out as we uh rant and ramble about gear. Hopefully
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: it was helpful. If you're one of those lucky guys
- 1:50:25Speaker 1: that still has a hunting season going on, good luck.
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: And if not, if your season is done like mine is,
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: enjoy a little break, take a deep breath, and get
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: ready to start preparing for two thousand eighteen. And so
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: until next time, thanks again and stay wired to hunt,
