- 0:05Orkney supermarket goes bananas. Welcome to Mark and Pete, in
- 0:10which we feature in this story in this episode, A banana
- 0:14apocalypse. Yes, we are Mark and Pete 2
- 0:17blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:21If you're feeling frightfully fruity and are compelled to do
- 0:25the splits, then you've gone completely bananas and
- 0:28completely lost your. Wits.
- 0:30Yes, well, how on earth could anybody go completely bananas?
- 0:35Well, a supermarket in Orkney definitely could.
- 0:38Well, what's strange about this particular story is that they
- 0:42accidentally ordered instead of 380 kilograms of wholesale boxes
- 0:49of bananas 38,000 Yes, goodness me.
- 0:54Well, that's a lot of fruity sales if you if you ask me, Mr.
- 0:59Pete. Now I know that if you've gone
- 1:01completely bananas and pushed the button and accidentally
- 1:04ordered 38,000 bananas and more, that might be a bit of a slip up
- 1:11on the account. What's the news?
- 1:13About this. Story Yes, the plans of the
- 1:16diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is
- 1:19hasty comes only to poverty. Proverbs 21 verse five yes, a
- 1:24hasty click of the button of the mouse, whatever it was that
- 1:28caused this problem of of adding zeros to the number in the order
- 1:33certainly has caused an issue and it's it's interesting is it
- 1:36seems amusing, I think because of the product.
- 1:41Now I don't know if you remember the famous film about the
- 1:48abundance of whiskey called whiskey galore.
- 1:50I don't know if Oh yes, this film we have this famous film
- 1:54based on a true incident, but obviously exaggerated.
- 1:57There is where there is an island.
- 2:02I don't know if it was actually Orkney, but it may have been it
- 2:05was an island off the coast of Scotland.
- 2:07It may even have been the same supermarket that misordered, I
- 2:10don't know. But in in the story, you know,
- 2:12it's a remote island and there's a ship it's shipwrecked and they
- 2:17get all the whiskey. And so there's there's whiskey
- 2:19galore. And so it's amusing, but of
- 2:22course it isn't really. And it's a serious, serious
- 2:25problem for the company, for those involved in the shipwreck,
- 2:28etcetera, etcetera. And here this seems amusing, but
- 2:30that's a lot of money to waste for a start.
- 2:34And then the food is wasted. Like you can give it away, but
- 2:38my question is how many bananas can you eat?
- 2:41Well, this is what actually happened, because then somebody
- 2:44kicked in with the great idea of hold on, we've got a surplus of
- 2:47bananas. So what they did is instead of
- 2:51returning to the mainland because of high winds, which
- 2:53would have disrupted the the whole flow.
- 2:56And of course, let's be honest, bananas do not last that long.
- 2:59And So what happened was Tesco's came in and said, hold on, the
- 3:05superstore could give them away to community groups and schools
- 3:09in the area. And that's what they did, Yes.
- 3:12So yes, Tesco's went bananas. Other comments could be made,
- 3:16but in actual fact in a positive way.
- 3:18So this was really a champion for turning really what could
- 3:22have been a real big slip up into something positive.
- 3:25Now, I will say that I wouldn't really sort of suggest that this
- 3:29is a strategy that they should adopt because at the end of the
- 3:33day, let's be honest, you know, when you, when we make an error
- 3:38of that sort of magnitude, it can cost you.
- 3:41Because I was thinking, what if you were to say, order some
- 3:44other products, I mean magic, say for example, you ordered, I
- 3:49don't know, 38,000 toilet rolls or if you ordered 38,000
- 3:55something else. Yes, I think the key is the
- 3:58short shelf life. But once they're ripe, they last
- 4:01less than a week, don't they just Oh yes, 5.
- 4:03Or 6. Days a banana and so then then
- 4:06that causes the problem. If it were toilet rolls, as long
- 4:08as you kept them dry you could send them back if you know.
- 4:11If it was something like with a long shelf life, there's a
- 4:13possibility. But you.
- 4:14Could accidentally order something expensive that has a
- 4:18short. I mean I I don't know whether
- 4:20they serve caviar in. Maybe that has AI don't know
- 4:23anything about caviar, but something else and maybe some
- 4:29some sort of fish products that you could that you've ordered in
- 4:33it goes off pretty quickly and you know, you suddenly you're
- 4:35well, you've got it's not the. First time?
- 4:38Yeah, it's the first time they've done this because
- 4:41Orkney's North Isles inadvertently ordered 720 Easter
- 4:45eggs rather than 80 that the owner wanted.
- 4:50Now, of course, they had to do another charity thing.
- 4:52So I think we can see a theme here developing, can't we, that
- 4:56if you want, you want some surplus products, go to the
- 5:01Orkney Isles. And maybe you too could go
- 5:08completely bananas on the. Island.
- 5:10Yes, you heard it here first, folks.
