- 0:00Speaker 1: The Football and four is powered by the Inside of
- 0:02the Birds podcast is brought you by Bet three sixty five.
- 0:04Whatever the sport, whatever the moment, it's never ordinary. At
- 0:07Bet three sixty five, Adam Kaplan. One week from today,
- 0:12the Eagles report they'll be on the practice field on Wednesday. Well,
- 0:16how will they do? What does Vegas say? We'll look
- 0:20at the individuals. Jalen Hurts has been in the news
- 0:22a lot over the last twenty four hours. Adam Caplin.
- 0:25We'll see what Vegas thinks about his upcoming season today
- 0:29as we'll look at some prop bets for some of
- 0:31the Eagles offensive players. But Jalen Hurts always a polarizing discussion,
- 0:36is he not?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah? Look, look the ESPN, the rankings. You and Jeff
- 0:41talked about it yesterday. Look, this is just something that
- 0:45hurts us how to deal with. Look every week you
- 0:48go back, He's always had the chip on his shoulder.
- 0:51What happened to him in Alabama forced him to transferred
- 0:53to Oklahoma and he gets drafted to Beagles back up. Whence
- 0:57the situation with Eagles goes sound, he becomes a starter.
- 1:01You guys weren't happy with Hurts. His performance at twenty one,
- 1:04so they sue heavily to Shaun Watson. So Jalen had
- 1:07to deal with at it. To his credit, he just
- 1:11kept fighting through it and you saw what he did
- 1:13in twenty twenty two. It's pretty amazing, isn't it. You know,
- 1:16if you just to the grindstone, keep working and you
- 1:19could have a great season. So it is interesting though, Mike,
- 1:21when we turn the page and Jeff Mocher and I
- 1:23did our show today. We did team props and player props,
- 1:26the fantasy props, which we'll talked about a couple of
- 1:28them today. It's just funny how the odds bakers, look,
- 1:33they saw Lancer Hurtz through for underd three thousand yards.
- 1:36That can't happen two years in a row. That's that's
- 1:39our thinking. The prop is thirty two hundred point five
- 1:43yards of the over unders minus one ten. Look, I
- 1:48get it, the offense will go through Buckley again, that's
- 1:50not going to change as long as he's healthy. But
- 1:52how could Hurts. I mean, you can't be averaging like
- 1:55one hundred and eight yards a game. That's it's hard
- 1:57to see.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Yeah, So let's look at the pro for Jalen Hurts
- 2:01this year out there, everybody's talking about Hurts. Where does
- 2:03he fit in the pantheon of the great quarterbacks in
- 2:05this league? I guess one of the problems is Hurt's
- 2:08numbers generally don't stack up against the other guys. So
- 2:12the over runder thirty two hundred and a half yards
- 2:15is the passing six hundred and a half rushing and
- 2:18nineteen and a half passing touchdowns. It's not a ton
- 2:21of passing touchdowns. A lot of rushing yards though, So
- 2:24that's it for Hurts. Six hundred rushing, thirty two hundred passing,
- 2:28nineteen passing touchdowns.
- 2:30Speaker 2: And so Hurts average on nine to three yards point
- 2:33five per game show last season throwing the football. And
- 2:37I know, Mike, you've asked me this, and my feeling
- 2:39has been all off season. I'll throw a little bit
- 2:41more than they did last season. Yes, they won the
- 2:43Show by running the ball like crazy. The only NFL
- 2:46team to run the ball more than they throw it
- 2:49in the first half of games, which is typically the opposite.
- 2:51You always come out throwing more. You go back to
- 2:54the really going back fifty or some more. You throw
- 2:56it in the first half, that run it, you win.
- 2:59But Eagles were the anomaly. It worked. Why would they
- 3:01go why would they go back to what they used
- 3:03to do? Because it's working. It's why they redid Barkley's
- 3:06contract after one year, which is unheard of. So but
- 3:11doesn't mean, look, now here's the thing to throw the
- 3:13ball more. Look, let you know, they because of Barkley
- 3:17and somewhat of Hurts, they they had so many leads,
- 3:21so they don't have to throw the football. So the
- 3:23feeling here is Mike that they'll throw a little bit.
- 3:25You know, they've got a minimum of five defensive starters changing,
- 3:29so maybe the defense won't be quite as good to
- 3:31be able to throw the ball more. That's that's the thinking,
- 3:33all right.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So obviously Jalen Hurts doesn't win everybody over, but he
- 3:38wins a lot of games. What's the over under on
- 3:41the wins there? Right, That's all that really matters for him.
- 3:43Not the rushing yards, not the panting yards, not the
- 3:46passing touchdowns. But what is Saquon Barkley going to do
- 3:49for an encore over two thousand yards last year? Where
- 3:53are they set in the number for this year? Yeah?
- 3:56Speaker 2: And he sat out the final game, which you know
- 3:59it's funny. And so as you know that we talked
- 4:02about on your show, that was a big controversy. Deagles
- 4:04were obviously clearly right by not risking him, and they
- 4:08didn't do that, and he, as you said, he ran
- 4:11for over two thousand yards despite missing the last game.
- 4:15Now you look at the rushing yards prop, it's fifteen
- 4:17hundred point five the overs plus one hundred, which means
- 4:21the money he's on a going runner, which is minus
- 4:23one twenty. That's interesting, Mike. Look, he's not getting two
- 4:27thousand yards. It's not going to happen. No one's ever
- 4:29done it before back to back seasons, which makes sense.
- 4:33But the odds makers, Mike, last year they were barely
- 4:37over one thousand on their prop, and I thought it
- 4:39was ridiculous. I mean, I get it that he had
- 4:41a big injury history, but I don't see. This is
- 4:44where I don't think the odds makers want to do
- 4:46these fantasy props. Either don't look at coaching, or they
- 4:49don't look at function or the offense, so they don't
- 4:51look in this case, the offensive line the best in football.
- 4:54So why would you think Barkley wouldn't have a great game? Now,
- 4:57if you're putting together a line on this. He's only
- 5:00going to play twelve games, and okay, that's fine. If
- 5:02you think he's going this five games, yeah, you could
- 5:05put it around fifteen or sixteen hundred yards, maybe a
- 5:07little bit less than that. So clearly to me, Mike,
- 5:09they think there'll be some sort of regression either with injury,
- 5:12if he won't be as successful.
- 5:13Speaker 1: All right, Adam, Let's look at his touchdown number, because
- 5:15that's eleven and a half, which is interesting because we
- 5:17know Hurts. They don't have a rushing touchdown number here,
- 5:22but he vultures a lot of those up so Barkley,
- 5:25you know, he doesn't get into the end zone nearly
- 5:28as much as he could.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Mike, listen to these touchdown numbers for Hurts. Okay, going
- 5:32back his first full season as a starter twenty twenty
- 5:35one ten rushing twenty two, thirteen rushing two years ago, fifteen,
- 5:41last season fourteen. Well, yeah, he's going to Boguart the touchdown.
- 5:44So it's tough. I mean, now, the over under total
- 5:47four Barkley here is eleven and a half touchdowns. The
- 5:52over is minus one twenty five, So to clear, the
- 5:54money's on the over. The unders is plus one oh five.
- 5:58So if you don't think would be quite as good,
- 5:59if you think you'll have eleven or fewer, you would
- 6:04get plus money, which is which is look that that's
- 6:06that's kind of a smart bat. Now he had a
- 6:08career high thirteen rushing touchdowns, Kerr high two thousand and
- 6:13five yards Akurer high and carries. Yeah, I see around
- 6:19ten nine or ten maybe eleven. If I had to
- 6:23take his side, MIC would be that under plus one
- 6:26oh five. But you made the point at the top here,
- 6:29which is the best one? You got the hurts and
- 6:32the pushtush. I wonder what will happen if it gets
- 6:37voted out for twenty six? I wonder what the rushing
- 6:40what do you think I would give hurts like five
- 6:42rushing touchdowns, maybe even less if it gets outlawed.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, So I expect about double digits from hurts.
- 6:50We'll see where Barkley. That number, by the way, eleven
- 6:53and a half for Saquon on the over under for
- 6:56rushing touchdowns this year. If you like the under, you
- 6:58can get a little value there plus one oh five.
- 7:00If you think Barkley can't get in the end zone
- 7:03as much this year, all right, aj Brown, he doesn't
- 7:06have the big, gaudy number one wide receiver numbers. But
- 7:09where did they set his receiving number.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, look, it's not his fault. Two things. A they
- 7:14became a running team and B he missed four games. Well,
- 7:17of course the numbers are going to go down. He's
- 7:18still by the way. By the way, he still for
- 7:22winning over one thousand yards. People say that he had
- 7:24down here, Well, his numbers were down for two reasons. Again,
- 7:28he missed four games. He had the injury earlier in
- 7:30the season, and we've seen what it looks like when
- 7:33he doesn't play. It doesn't look very good. No, so,
- 7:36and that's you know, we'll talk about training camp questions
- 7:39next week, and that's part of what they have to answer.
- 7:42They've they've got to be better when these guys can't play.
- 7:45But when you look at the numbers, he's just under
- 7:49eleven hundred yards last year, ten seventy nine in thirteen games,
- 7:53big average per catch, lots of big plays over sixty yards,
- 7:56you know, hurt for the deep ball. So the prop
- 7:58here is eleven to fifty points five. It's the owner
- 8:02and the overs minus one ten. Yeah, I could certainly
- 8:05see why people might like the over if you're gonna
- 8:07take one. Now again, Eagles are gonna be a rushing team,
- 8:10but when they throw out, they're going to be successful
- 8:12because it's we saw in the Super Bowl. Mike, if
- 8:14you want to stop Barkley and the Chiefs put on
- 8:16a specific front to stop Barkley, well, Eagle's gonna throw
- 8:20the ball downfield. That's what Hurts loves to do, and
- 8:22that helps AJ Brown a big time.
- 8:24Speaker 1: All right, Adam Kaplan football at four. Here, let's go
- 8:26to touchdowns for AJ Brown. You know, not a eye
- 8:30popping number here, but if you like the over, there's
- 8:33a little value on AJ brown touchdowns, Mike.
- 8:36Speaker 2: The last two seasons is he was down on touchdowns
- 8:39only seven this season, past season twenty three only seven.
- 8:43Now he played by the way every game in twenty
- 8:46two and twenty three, he only needs seven touchdowns. Now,
- 8:49you got the Gotter factor. Clearly, you got the Hurts factor.
- 8:52The touch push is a big deal, and the push
- 8:55play takes away an opportune to get the ball there.
- 8:58That's part of it. So yeah, he probably not gonna
- 9:00be a high touchdown guy anymore. I think it's a
- 9:03fair number so to win it, if you're gonna take
- 9:05the over, you got to get at least dight and
- 9:07the under for the money is at minus one twenty.
- 9:10Speaker 1: All right, the other guy's interested. There's a whole conversation.
- 9:12We can get it kind of spin off on this,
- 9:14which is DeVonta Smith. His receiving yards. You look at
- 9:17you say over under eight fifty and a half. Come on,
- 9:20Devonte's better than that. But that's kind of been the
- 9:23ballpark for him.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Well, see again, when guys missed time, you have to
- 9:28bake in. Well, what happened last year he only had
- 9:31eight thirty three. Well, he missed four games. Okay, he
- 9:34missed four games. Actually, it's been very durable Mike, you know,
- 9:37throughout his career. But last season he set up the
- 9:40last one then he had the injury. So yeah, he
- 9:42only had eight thirty three. But that again is missing
- 9:46a lot of time. If you just take the final
- 9:48the last three years when h progresses a quarterback chick
- 9:51ling twenty two, eleven ninety six, then two years ago
- 9:54ten sixty six. Well, he was hurt last year, Devonte,
- 9:57and he missed three games through the injury. One he
- 9:59was rested. Certainly he only had a thirty three. This
- 10:02is where I think they're totally missing this. Mike, his
- 10:05receiving archer only eight fifty point five. We'll see they're
- 10:07not taking in. It's almost like they didn't even look
- 10:09up that he missed time. You'll hear me talk about this.
- 10:13I was pretty passionate about it, as I am with
- 10:15you right now. The over eight to fifty point five,
- 10:19so you need at least day fifty one to win
- 10:20that bet is over my one ten in the under.
- 10:22It's also minus one ten. I'd be stunned if he
- 10:26doesn't go over. I'll tell you that much that would surprise.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Me, all right, And what about getting in the end zone,
- 10:31because while his number of yards are down from AJ Brown's,
- 10:35they're right about in the same ballpark. And there's value
- 10:37here at plus one hundred for the touchdown number if
- 10:40you want to go over.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, you know it's interesting for the calm, skinny batman,
- 10:44for a guy who is as Denny as he is,
- 10:45you know, physical he is, it's really interesting. And he actually,
- 10:50over the last two seasons technically has more touchdowns than
- 10:54AJ Brown. Believe it or not, he is fifteen the
- 10:57touchdowns could be fluky. I mean, the thing about DeVante
- 11:01Smith is he could run deeper routes, he could run
- 11:03shorter routes. You go on any kind of route that
- 11:06you want, and he's really tough despite being as stinny
- 11:09as he is. Now. It's interesting because they're taking an
- 11:12average year sort of and the but I don't agree
- 11:16with it. The total is six and a half, the
- 11:19overs plus one hundred. Well, Smith did have fifteen in
- 11:23the last two seasons. In fact, is twenty two receiving
- 11:26touchdowns over the last three seasons, which would be over
- 11:29that average total. So I'm a little surprised. You would
- 11:31think that you think the over would be minus one ten.
- 11:34It's not. It's plus one hundred. The under is minus
- 11:37one twenty.
- 11:38Speaker 1: All right, yesterday we talked to you. I don't know
- 11:39if you saw this article that we were talking about yesterday.
- 11:42There was somebody who basically was going through the commanders,
- 11:44how many commanders would start on the Eagles.
- 11:47Speaker 2: No, I didn't see that.
- 11:48Speaker 1: One guy he had was Debo over Smith. Would you
- 11:53rather Debo or Smith?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Here's why Divo's got a major injury history. They're completely different.
- 11:58Deebo is a guy you could line him up outside,
- 12:02but he's a much better playing inside. He's got better
- 12:06versatility than Smitty, but Smitty, to me, he's been more durable.
- 12:12You worry about Deebo cmuel as he gets up there.
- 12:15He's in a new offense. He is twenty nine. Diebo's
- 12:19not the same player he once was. Look, he's a
- 12:22really really talented guy, big big injury history. I'd rather
- 12:27have Submitte. I'm not biased. You know, we don't inside
- 12:29the Birds. We don't root for anything or anyone or
- 12:31any team. But I'm just being honest about it. It's
- 12:34if you would have asked me two years ago, different story.
- 12:38Davante Smith is really really consistent. Now Deebo is gonna
- 12:42be fun under Cliff Kingsbury. Who's the play caller for
- 12:45the Washington Do you.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Like Tunsil or Milatta?
- 12:48Speaker 2: My lot, it's Tunsall, as one offensive line coach told me,
- 12:52who looked at his tape from last year, because this
- 12:55guy reviews every offensive lineman that he doesn't coach. I
- 12:58remember him telling me that Tunsall he has four bad
- 13:00plays a year. He probably had about nine or ten.
- 13:02Still pretty good. But my lot I was elite last season.
- 13:06He's a boy. He's great, Mike. It's one of the
- 13:10all time Eagle stories, all right.
- 13:11Speaker 1: The last one that we kind of scratched our heads
- 13:13on a little bit. I don't know. I don't have
- 13:15scratched her heads. We battled a little bit, Josh and
- 13:17I Louvu versus Bond.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Love Louisvu, but they're really different. Louvu is they both
- 13:24can rush the passer. Louvu has been an incredible story
- 13:27development a former undrafted free agent. Bond is better in covered.
- 13:32Bond's a better football player. I know it's now I
- 13:34say that it's only one year. Bond had the best
- 13:38season of any linebacker last season pure linebacker. We're talking
- 13:41about thirty four inside backer or forty three outside backer.
- 13:46Louvu is a really interesting player. He's a self made player.
- 13:51It's been on a number of teams, by the way,
- 13:53let's not forget. But I'm willing to say that Bond
- 13:56will come close to getting his success. So to have
- 14:00Zach Bond. Now, he's a little bit older twenty nine.
- 14:03Louvu Is may not maybe a year younger. They're a
- 14:07little bit different in their deployment, but they're both really good.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Who's he had Daniels over Hurts as well, which started
- 14:12off the whole conversation.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Well here's the problem with that, right, but real quick,
- 14:15So with the Daniels thing, my role has been whenever
- 14:18I've been asked to participate in poles is I'll give
- 14:22you my opinion on the first year the guy after
- 14:23the first year, but I'm not ranking him. I want
- 14:26to see two years back to back. That's just my role.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 14:30Speaker 2: People don't like it, but I'm not gonna it's it's
- 14:33when I've like Mike, I vote for two polls for postseason.
- 14:36One of them is ProFootball Writers Association is by far
- 14:39the most detailed. You know, I have certain rules that like,
- 14:42you got to play a certain amount of games. So
- 14:43they don't have one. But if a guy it's like
- 14:46with the Royals, guy with some guy with the guy
- 14:48on the Royals maybe All Star team. It was ridiculous Baseball,
- 14:52some guy like made in the baseball MLB players are
- 14:57criticizing MLB for putting the guy on there. He only
- 15:00started a number of games. Yeah, you got to play
- 15:02a certain number of games to win an award.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Yeah, so and rook. You know, I said, with Bond
- 15:08and Lousville, Lou's resume is better than Bond's. Bond had
- 15:11the better season.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm willing to say. You know, I'm not voting.
- 15:16You know, I didn't have to turn any voter who's better.
- 15:18But if you're asking me who I'd rather have that more,
- 15:20it would be Bond. Because the thing that surprised me
- 15:24the guy I talked to We talked about this and
- 15:26inside the Births of Monday with Jeff talk to someone
- 15:30recently who graded Eagles their offense and defense because this
- 15:33is what teams do. And he said that he cannot
- 15:37believe how Lead Bonds skills and in pass coverages. He
- 15:42he just he doesn't understand how the guy never played
- 15:44this position before. I don't. I don't know, Mike. Some
- 15:48you know, some of what has happened with the Eagles
- 15:51is kind of lucky because if if Fick Fanger doesn't
- 15:54speak up, he's gonna be He's going to be an
- 15:55off He's going to be an edgeresser, and that's it,
- 15:58and you'll probably never hear from act Bonnegey probably would
- 16:00be gone after last year. While and then Jeff Stallin
- 16:04putting m Kai back in the guard. Coaching matters, folks.
- 16:07If you've never thought so, I just gave you two
- 16:09great examples.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Adam Kaplin football for a week from today. The Eagles
