- 0:00Speaker 1: So it's Jay here in the incarnation of the Neptune
- 0:03Speaker 1: Power Federation's bass player otherwise known as Jay Tannic Richall,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and we're coming up to Brisbane to play the Dead
- 0:10Speaker 1: of Winter Festival very very soon, and I for one
- 0:15Speaker 1: am very excited about it.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Excited you should be in DJ. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:20Speaker 1: No worries, mate, Always good to see your head.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Always good to see all parts of your body, mate,
- 0:26Speaker 3: not all.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Times, you say.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Rather, the Neptune Power Federation hit Brisbane and just under
- 0:33Speaker 3: seven days from appearance at the reignited Dead of Winter Festival. Mate,
- 0:37Speaker 3: So it's sly obvious, but how good is it to
- 0:41Speaker 3: see if festival on this fact.
- 0:42Speaker 2: That is just Australian band playing Australian music.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, it's great. I remember we've played it
- 0:51Speaker 1: in the past a couple of times, once with the
- 0:54Speaker 1: Friends of the Ron band and once with the Neptune
- 0:57Speaker 1: Power Federation band. And yeah it's a great day. Haven't
- 1:02Speaker 1: been to this new site that they're they're doing it at,
- 1:04Speaker 1: but yeah, it's always like a super well run and yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 1: good vibes all day.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Love it nice and best of all features bands such
- 1:13Speaker 3: as Mammal Diz death Rays as Ton of Flans Japan's
- 1:16Speaker 3: Black Reno keeps more.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Mate, Now I'm going to put you on the spotty.
- 1:19Speaker 3: And most of the times I ask you looking forward
- 1:21Speaker 3: to playing with there's something and I ask you you
- 1:23Speaker 3: least looking forward.
- 1:24Speaker 1: To playing with least looking forward? You can't say that.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I thought you'd give me an answer.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Look, I'll have to look at the lineup again. I'm
- 1:37Speaker 1: sure there's someone on there that sucks, but that's unlikely.
- 1:42Speaker 3: You and you would have played with most of these
- 1:43Speaker 3: bands before. Though on you, what's kind of like backstage
- 1:46Speaker 3: or something like this, like is it is it a
- 1:48Speaker 3: day hour? Is it all business?
- 1:51Speaker 1: Oh you know it's all business of course. Uh yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's good. It's going to be a good day. And
- 2:01Speaker 1: also like for me, a lot of those days just
- 2:04Speaker 1: catching up with people that haven't seen for a long time.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So I've actually been known to miss some of my
- 2:10Speaker 1: favorite bands. Is because I'm in a good conversation with someone.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Hey, you're like a pinball back there, mate, Like you're
- 2:15Speaker 3: just people are just grabbing him like come here, come,
- 2:18Speaker 3: I come.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I must get tiring.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm grabbing people going, oh you come over here?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Well, like have you did a bit of a Q
- 2:28Speaker 3: and A with most of the bands playing on Dead
- 2:30Speaker 3: of Windrow, and one of the questions we asked was
- 2:32Speaker 3: who's likely to get in the most mischief on the day.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You want to know who? About ninety nine percent of
- 2:37Speaker 2: the answers were Jane.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Lizzy absolutely hystereotyping.
- 2:45Speaker 2: You think that's a bit of a bum rap.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I feel judged, and now now I'm going to be
- 2:52Speaker 1: really sensible, just to show.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Them how I'm gonna reckon.
- 2:55Speaker 1: That's gonna last I reckon. Well, you know I'm going
- 2:58Speaker 1: to do two shows, so you know, I got to
- 3:00Speaker 1: keep herself nice for most of the day.
- 3:02Speaker 3: And most of it, I like I say, most of
- 3:04Speaker 3: the day. The names that might be there and they
- 3:09Speaker 3: might not be too familiar with the Neptune Power Federation, Mate,
- 3:11Speaker 3: it's a bit of a bit of a background on
- 3:13Speaker 3: the band and what they can expect.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Well, we were formed on a distant planet. We were
- 3:21Speaker 1: summoned by Her Majesty, the Imperial Priestess to basically support
- 3:27Speaker 1: her in all her endeavors. Her endeavors being traveling through
- 3:31Speaker 1: time to destroy the patriarchy, and so we've basically been
- 3:36Speaker 1: doing her bidding now for about ten years in our time,
- 3:40Speaker 1: it spans the millennia in other people's times. But yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 1: so you've got all these rules in the band, so
- 3:48Speaker 1: none of the men in the band are allowed to
- 3:49Speaker 1: speak aloud, to speak, she's deemed that it's okay for
- 3:56Speaker 1: me to talk today, so I can talk candidly. But
- 4:02Speaker 1: but yeah, for the most part where we're they're just
- 4:04Speaker 1: to do her bidding. And apparently her bidding is to
- 4:07Speaker 1: play nineteen seventies psychedelic rock.
- 4:11Speaker 3: All right, So does that mean no male backups or anything. No, no,
- 4:14Speaker 3: nothing from you on stage.
- 4:16Speaker 1: We're allowed to sing, we're not allowed to say anything.
- 4:19Speaker 2: How do you How do you go with that? Mate?
- 4:20Speaker 2: You must hate that?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Listen. I enjoy it myself. And also, you know, the
- 4:26Speaker 1: consequences of speaking are so dire that you know, it's
- 4:30Speaker 1: better off better off just sort of doing what she wants.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And yeah, the other thing we're not allowed to do
- 4:37Speaker 1: is smile because what we're doing is very serious. We're
- 4:42Speaker 1: not allowed to wear band shirts because we're the only
- 4:44Speaker 1: band from our planet. So there's there's it's you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: there's a lot of rules, but but I do like
- 4:52Speaker 1: the boundaries.
- 4:54Speaker 3: What about the little the live show, it's just a
- 4:56Speaker 3: bit theatrical and out there and it's not just like
- 4:59Speaker 3: a stand up for much of it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. I mean, as I said, the Imperial process.
- 5:05Speaker 1: She's been traveling through time for quite a while. She's
- 5:08Speaker 1: been through a lot of battles. She's a bit of
- 5:11Speaker 1: a warrior, so you know, you just don't want to
- 5:15Speaker 1: get on the other side of her, to be honest.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And and yeah, the show is is is spectacular to
- 5:22Speaker 1: say the least, am I right? Well, she she sort
- 5:28Speaker 1: of casts this spell over the rest of the audience
- 5:32Speaker 1: and and the band and and it's it's you know,
- 5:38Speaker 1: very She wears these very elaborate costumes that I mean,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I say costumes basically just said day to day outfit.
- 5:48Speaker 1: But but yeah, there's you know, big, big sounds, big lights,
- 5:53Speaker 1: big you know. Our sixth member is the smoke machine
- 5:56Speaker 1: this this particular of the show. The last few shows
- 6:02Speaker 1: we've had a permanent Hammond organist percussionists, so and also,
- 6:11Speaker 1: in a strange turn of events, guitarist for this one
- 6:15Speaker 1: show is being replaced by Lindsay McDougal from the Friends
- 6:20Speaker 1: of Wrong band, So that's going to be interesting seeing
- 6:24Speaker 1: him not allowed to talk.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I'm going to say, do you reckon? That will happen?
- 6:28Speaker 1: Well, have to be otherwise it'll be cast into a
- 6:30Speaker 1: pit of hell.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I'm telling me, you'd probably enjoy that.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Now to say someone has come along on the day
- 6:41Speaker 3: and then not familiar with the band at all, what
- 6:43Speaker 3: three songs should they listen to?
- 6:44Speaker 2: You know what to expect?
- 6:46Speaker 1: Three songs? I homember he looked at the setlist that
- 6:50Speaker 1: we're doing. But the first song we do we're doing
- 6:53Speaker 1: is I believe a song called and the Bones Decay,
- 6:59Speaker 1: because as we all know, the flesh is impermanent, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: her majesty, the imperial process is slowly being replaced by
- 7:06Speaker 1: technology to make her inevitably immortal, and so yeah, look
- 7:12Speaker 1: out for that. There's a song called I'll Make a
- 7:17Speaker 1: Man out of You, which is a crowd favorite, and
- 7:23Speaker 1: that's sort of more in line of There was one
- 7:27Speaker 1: point when she was traveling through retirement, ended up in
- 7:29Speaker 1: the back of a panel van outside a Judas Priest
- 7:31Speaker 1: concert doing god knows what the boys there and what's
- 7:37Speaker 1: a good A good third one? There's so many. We
- 7:42Speaker 1: got another one Mondo tomorrow. It's a good boogie Woogie Number.
- 7:46Speaker 1: It's an interesting band because it's we sort of span
- 7:49Speaker 1: a few different genres. So it's like when we're in Europe.
- 7:52Speaker 1: We played these three festivals, and one of them was
- 7:55Speaker 1: a very kind of quite a serious heavy metal festival
- 7:58Speaker 1: where the headliner and our day was a band called Saxon,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and so it was we sort of fit into that, okay.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But then we played this other one called Freak Valley,
- 8:07Speaker 1: which is more kind of psychedelic. Yeah, her majesty uses
- 8:13Speaker 1: a lot of kind of delays, echoes things like that
- 8:17Speaker 1: and her voice, so there's a lot of psych psyched
- 8:20Speaker 1: out sort of bits, and and then there's sort of
- 8:23Speaker 1: more kind of like seventies rock and roll, kind of
- 8:27Speaker 1: motorhead sort of elements to it. And yeah, it's there's
- 8:32Speaker 1: some for everyone.
- 8:33Speaker 2: That's nice.
- 8:34Speaker 3: And speaking of my notion recently released the album by
- 8:37Speaker 3: the same name, mate, how was a reception for it?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Oh, listen, it's been great. We are yeah, with our guitarist,
- 8:48Speaker 1: fox Is is prolific, to say say the least, And
- 8:52Speaker 1: so we did generally churn out albums and when we
- 8:55Speaker 1: when we did this one, and I record them all
- 8:57Speaker 1: here at the pet Food Factory and when we were
- 9:00Speaker 1: sort of halfway through doing the new album, he sprung
- 9:03Speaker 1: on us that we were also going to do another
- 9:05Speaker 1: album at the same time, and so we re recorded
- 9:11Speaker 1: very first out. So when we very first started, we
- 9:15Speaker 1: were basically sort of the plan was to be a
- 9:18Speaker 1: studio band with and never play live. So it was
- 9:21Speaker 1: just kind of a project that he had in mind
- 9:24Speaker 1: and got some people together, and the singer on that
- 9:27Speaker 1: record is a guy from the States. He used to
- 9:31Speaker 1: play in punk bands, because we sort of all met
- 9:33Speaker 1: playing in punk bands. I used to play in Nancy
- 9:35Speaker 1: Vandal with our drummer and guitarist, and so yeah, when
- 9:42Speaker 1: it came time to recording, we sort of mind all
- 9:43Speaker 1: these people that we knew, and then we got Troy
- 9:46Speaker 1: Destroy who's a kind of legitimate shredder, and then so
- 9:50Speaker 1: we recorded this band with this guy who could do
- 9:52Speaker 1: a decent Ozzy Osborne kind of voice, and then but
- 9:56Speaker 1: with no view to be playing live. And then Her Majesty,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Imperial Priestess appeared to us one day in this
- 10:03Speaker 1: vision and we realized that she'd been there the whole time,
- 10:08Speaker 1: hiding in plain sight. So yeah, so the new New
- 10:13Speaker 1: Old album is that has been re recorded so from
- 10:17Speaker 1: from top to bottom with her singing, and it's fantastic.
- 10:21Speaker 1: It's one of my favorites.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Who who back onto the new album made Like?
- 10:27Speaker 3: The press release says it's a raucous foray into the
- 10:30Speaker 3: depth of the dirtiest club from down Under.
- 10:33Speaker 2: What the hell is that mean?
- 10:37Speaker 1: Sounds like a European wrote that.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I had to bring it up because it sounds it
- 10:42Speaker 2: sounds tafty.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's there's one thing about the Neptune Power Federation.
- 10:48Speaker 1: It's sexiness. But yes, I don't know who wrote that,
- 10:52Speaker 1: but that seems on track to me.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Well someone guy by the guys in the bed Rod
- 11:00Speaker 3: start It says that the album goes back to your
- 11:02Speaker 3: punk roots.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Would you say that was?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon like a lot of the a lot
- 11:07Speaker 1: of the albums of Yeah, like I said, sort of
- 11:10Speaker 1: spanned a few a few different genres, and this one
- 11:14Speaker 1: is definitely has a few more kind of garage kind
- 11:17Speaker 1: of punk elements to it. But but yeah, it's kind
- 11:22Speaker 1: of a little bit dirtier than the last one, I think,
- 11:25Speaker 1: And yeah, I love it.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Enough for me And you mentioned this before, Like previous
- 11:34Speaker 3: albums have told all the stories from the adventure of
- 11:37Speaker 3: the Imperial Princess, but mon no tomorrow me is more
- 11:40Speaker 3: into technology and stuff like that. So from now on
- 11:43Speaker 3: and the album is going to be based around different themes.
- 11:45Speaker 1: By that or well, each each album has kind of
- 11:49Speaker 1: a different theme to it, and a lot of them
- 11:52Speaker 1: come out with graphic novels that inverted. Crucifox our guitarist,
- 11:58Speaker 1: he'll enjoy. He's a fantastic artist and he's he's had
- 12:03Speaker 1: art for Friends of Rome and yeah, a lot of
- 12:06Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of a lot of different bands,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and so you were very lucky to have him on
- 12:11Speaker 1: board to do all our album artwork. But yes, he
- 12:13Speaker 1: always he does all our film clips and and yeah,
- 12:16Speaker 1: each each record is a has a different theme. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: there was one Demon Lamore, which was all about her
- 12:24Speaker 1: Majesty's love of interests through time, a lot of various relationships.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And then we had Memoirs of a Rat Queen which
- 12:32Speaker 1: kind of documented all the different sort of historical events
- 12:38Speaker 1: that she turns out she had a part in. I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 1: you might thought you might have thought that the plague was,
- 12:46Speaker 1: you know, kind of a natural biological intrusion into everyone's lives,
- 12:50Speaker 1: but yeah, it turns out it was her, she was
- 12:53Speaker 1: doing it. It was the there was a feminist march
- 12:58Speaker 1: on Versailles in Uh. I don't know when it was,
- 13:01Speaker 1: sixteen hundreds. I'm going to guess probably wasn't. But yeah,
- 13:07Speaker 1: she did that.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Wow, she's done all the wicked things.
- 13:10Speaker 1: He's done all that. There's been very an element of
- 13:13Speaker 1: positivity about a lot of them. I mean, the plague
- 13:16Speaker 1: got so much.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I guess I say, where does the positivity come from?
- 13:19Speaker 2: The plague.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Control? Yeah?
- 13:23Speaker 2: True, true? Indeed. Oh bear enough topic a bit mate.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm so something I've been asking of my lady. But
- 13:28Speaker 2: can you remember the first time you heard one of
- 13:30Speaker 2: your songs on the radio? And what was it?
- 13:32Speaker 3: And where were the Neptune Power Federation and anyone you
- 13:36Speaker 3: want to answer?
- 13:40Speaker 1: We heard? Uh, we heard something recent. Oh, we heard.
- 13:45Speaker 1: We were at a festival in the south of Germany
- 13:48Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago and there were people doing
- 13:52Speaker 1: yoga in the morning. When we first turned up, there
- 13:55Speaker 1: were some of the campers were doing this yoga session
- 13:57Speaker 1: and they were playing a Neptune song to do there, Yogatu.
- 14:02Speaker 2: How did you join in?
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah? I didn't. I'm not flexible enough, but ye, but yeah,
- 14:10Speaker 1: that was It's pretty cool.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah no, I thought right, Jill. Thanks for your time.
- 14:15Speaker 3: Rodan Neptune Power Federation are part of Dead Winter Festival
- 14:17Speaker 3: at the Mansfield Tamen in Brisbane on June the twenty seventh.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Believe it or not, it's gonna be the first time
- 14:22Speaker 3: I've ever seen in mate, so I should be there
- 14:24Speaker 3: front and center and I'll see you on the day.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, with any luck, you'll be you'll be
- 14:28Speaker 1: blessed by Her Majesty
