- 0:32Today we are turning back the clock to the time of dinosaurs
- 0:36with a hard level trivia challenge.
- 0:38Some questions will feel friendly and some will really
- 0:42test your Dino knowledge, but every answer comes with a quick
- 0:46explanation to help you remember.
- 0:48Take a breath, get your thinking cap ready, and listen for the
- 0:51pause after each question so you can guess before the answer.
- 0:55All right, let's dive right in. Here we go with question one.
- 1:09In which geologic period did dinosaurs first appear, Late
- 1:13Triassic, Jurassic, or Cretaceous?
- 1:21The answer is the Late Triassic. Dinosaurs evolved around 230
- 1:26million years ago and then diversified through the Jurassic
- 1:30and Cretaceous periods. Question two.
- 1:33What is the name Tyrannosaurus Rex mean?
- 1:36In plain English, the answer is tyrant lizard king.
- 1:44It comes from Greek and Latin roots and refers to its large
- 1:48size and top position in its ecosystem at the time.
- 1:52Question 3. Which dinosaur is famous for an
- 1:55extremely long neck that may have been about half its body
- 1:59length? The answer is Mammokosaurus.
- 2:07Fossils from China show an unusually long neck with many
- 2:11vertebrae, making it one of the longest necked dinosaurs known.
- 2:15Question 4. Triceratops lived in which
- 2:18period? Jurassic or Cretaceous?
- 2:25The answer is the Cretaceous. Triceratops lived near the very
- 2:31end of the Cretaceous in North America, just before the mass
- 2:34extinction about 66,000,000 years ago.
- 2:38Question 5. Which dinosaur had a sharp thumb
- 2:42spike that helped it handle plants and defend itself and was
- 2:45once key to identifying dinosaur fossils in Europe?
- 2:53The answer is Iguanodon. Its thumb spike is one of the
- 2:57earliest recognized dinosaur features and help scientists
- 3:01understand that dinosaurs were a unique group.
- 3:05Question 6. Which non bird dinosaur was the
- 3:08first clearly found with feather like filaments preserved in rock
- 3:12in the 1990s? The answer is Cyanosaropteryx.
- 3:21Fossils from Liaoning, China revealed filament like
- 3:25structures along its body, giving strong evidence that many
- 3:29dinosaurs had simple feathers. Question 7.
- 3:33What does the word sauropod mean?
- 3:35As in giant long necked plant eaters like Brachiosaurus and
- 3:39Diplodicus. The answer is lizard foot.
- 3:47The term describes the shape of their feet and was used by
- 3:50scientists when naming this group of long necked dinosaurs.
- 3:54Question 8. Which dinosaur had the longest
- 3:58known claws of any land animal, measuring up to about a meter
- 4:02long? The answer is there is an
- 4:09Asaurus. It's huge claws were likely used
- 4:12for pulling branches, feeding and display, and it's diet is
- 4:16thought to have been mostly plants.
- 4:18Question 9. Scientists divide dinosaurs into
- 4:21two major groups based on hip bones.
- 4:24Are those two groups called Sariskia and Ornithskia?
- 4:32The answer is yes. Siriskins include theropods and
- 4:36sauropodomorphs, while ornithoscans include groups like
- 4:40stegosaurs, ankylosaurs, and hatosaurs.
- 4:44Question 10. What is 1 leading idea for why
- 4:47Stegosaurus had two rows of large plates on its back?
- 4:55The answer is display and temperature control.
- 4:59The plates were full of blood vessels and could have helped
- 5:02with heat exchange and with signaling to other stegosaurs.
- 5:06Question 11. Which dinosaur had a heavy tail
- 5:10club made of bone at the end of its tail?
- 5:17The answer is Ankylosaurus. Its body armor and tail club are
- 5:22some of the most recognizable features of any dinosaur.
- 5:26Question 12. What Crest topped?
- 5:29Hatterasaur likely used its long tube like head Crest to make
- 5:33sounds and for visual signals. The answer is parasrolefis.
- 5:43The crest's hollow passages may have worked like a built in
- 5:46resonance system, letting it produce low calls that carried
- 5:50through its environment. Question 13.
- 5:53Which group of small sharp toothed dinosaurs had one of the
- 5:56highest brain to body ratios Among dinosaurs and keen senses?
- 6:05The answer is the Tridentids. Fossils suggest good hearing and
- 6:09large eyes and tooth shapes point to an active lifestyle
- 6:13with quick reactions. Question 14.
- 6:17Which dinosaur is currently considered among the largest
- 6:20predatory dinosaurs and had tall spines on its back forming A
- 6:24sail like structure? The answer is Spinosaurus.
- 6:32Fossils from North Africa show long neural spines and
- 6:36adaptations for a partly aquatic lifestyle, such as dense bones
- 6:40and a crocodile like snout. Question 15.
- 6:44What do scientists call the rich fossil beds in northeastern
- 6:48China that have preserved many feathered dinosaurs with fine
- 6:51details? The answer is the Esian
- 6:58Formation, part of the G hole biota.
- 7:01The fine grain volcanic ash layers helped preserve feathers,
- 7:05skin outlines and even stomach contents in some fossils.
- 7:09Question 16. Which famous fossil from the
- 7:13Late Jurassic is considered an early bird and shows both
- 7:17feathers and dinosaur like teeth?
- 7:23The answer is Archaopteryx, found in Germany's Sohnhoeffen
- 7:28limestone. It helps connect modern birds to
- 7:31their dinosaur ancestors. Question 17.
- 7:35What event is most strongly linked to the extinction of non
- 7:39bird dinosaurs 66,000,000 years ago?
- 7:47The answer is a large asteroid impact known from the Chicksalub
- 7:51crater in Mexico and a worldwide layer rich in the element
- 7:55Iridium. Volcanic activity also occurred
- 7:58around that time, but the impact is a key driver identified by
- 8:03many studies. Question 18 Which modern animals
- 8:07are considered living dinosaurs by scientists?
- 8:15The answer is birds. Genetic, skeletal and fossil
- 8:19evidence show that birds evolved from small theropod dinosaurs,
- 8:23so every bird is part of the dinosaur family.
- 8:26Tree Question 19 Which long necked giant from Argentina is
- 8:31one of the heaviest land animals ever known From fossils, with
- 8:35estimates reaching over 60 metric tons, the answer is
- 8:44Argentinosaurus. Although its skeleton is
- 8:47incomplete, the size of its vertebrae and limb bones
- 8:51suggests a massive body, far heavier than most other
- 8:54dinosaurs. Question 20 Which armored
- 8:58dinosaur with shoulder spikes from the Early Cretaceous of
- 9:01England is known for being one of the best preserved dinosaur
- 9:05fossils ever found, including skin impressions?
- 9:12The answer is Borealo pelta. Discovered in Canada, it
- 9:17preserved armor, counter shading patterns and even stomach
- 9:21contents, giving scientists detailed information about its
- 9:24diet and appearance. Question 21 Which dinosaurs name
- 9:29means roof lizard reflecting the plate like bones of its skull?
- 9:38The answer is Stegosaurus. The name was chosen before
- 9:42scientists fully understood its backplates, but it remains one
- 9:46of the most recognized dinosaur names.
- 9:49Question 22 Which dinosaur group includes Velociraptor and shows
- 9:54a stiffened tail and a sickle shaped claw on the second toe?
- 10:02The answer is stromiosaurids. They are feathered theropods
- 10:06closely related to early birds, and their fossils are found in
- 10:10Asia, Europe, and North America. Question 23 Which giant skull
- 10:16frilled ceratopsian with long brow horns lived alongside
- 10:20Tyrannosaurus Rex near the end of the Cretaceous in North
- 10:24America? The answer is Triceratops.
- 10:31It had a solid frill and two long brow horns, and its fossils
- 10:36are very common in Late Cretaceous rock formations like
- 10:39the Hell Creek Formation. Super challenge question.
- 10:43What is the exact geologic stage at the very end of the
- 10:46Cretaceous when Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops lived?
- 10:55The answer is the Maastrichtian. It spans about 72 to 66,000,000
- 11:01years ago, with T Rex and Triceratops, especially known
- 11:05from the late Maastrichtian just before the end Cretaceous
- 11:09extinction. You did it, Dino experts.
