- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk Today.
- 0:17We've got a special episode, and I haven't done a whole ton of
- 0:21topical episodes, and that's in part due to the fact that I
- 0:25really love Bible study. But this particular episode, I'm
- 0:28going to be going through the Holy Spirit.
- 0:31And the Holy Spirit is something that we often as Christians
- 0:36today, depending on your faith tradition, what kind of
- 0:40denominational group you grew up in, you have either only ever
- 0:44heard about the Holy Spirit or you have barely ever heard about
- 0:48the Holy Spirit. And so there's a lot of
- 0:50confusion today on who the Holy Spirit is.
- 0:53Some people even wondering, is the Holy Spirit a person?
- 0:58And they wonder what his what his job is and what he is
- 1:04supposed to do, how we're supposed to relate to him.
- 1:08And so I'm hoping that as we spend a little bit of time
- 1:11together in the Word, we will get some great encouragement.
- 1:16And I am looking forward to this time.
- 1:19So we're going to do this. First.
- 1:21I'm going to read through. There's a classic Christian
- 1:28statement of belief that some believers in the about four to
- 1:33six hundreds AD put together. And I believe that it will help
- 1:39frame in historical ways what Christians have believed about
- 1:45the Holy Spirit over the past 2000 years and what God's people
- 1:50have believed about him since revelation of the Lord began.
- 1:54I'll say this first and foremost, the Holy Spirit is
- 1:58God. He's not a lesser God.
- 2:00He's not just some like powerful force.
- 2:04He is a person like the Father and the Son are the Persons in
- 2:11the Trinity. There is only one God.
- 2:14There's not one God, the Holy Spirit, a separate God the Son,
- 2:19and a separate God the Father. There's only one God.
- 2:22So anything that we would say about God is true about the Holy
- 2:28Spirit. So God is uncreated, the Holy
- 2:32Spirit is uncreated. God is omniscient.
- 2:36He knows everything. The Holy Spirit knows
- 2:38everything, the holy God is omnipresent, the Holy Spirit is
- 2:43wherever he desires to be, and same thing then with God is
- 2:49omnipotent, that he is able to do whatever he wants to do, and
- 2:53the Holy Spirit is just that same way.
- 2:56So as we have that kind of baseline that we are not
- 3:00Trithius, we do not believe that there are three gods, but only
- 3:04one God. That'll frame how we read
- 3:07through this ancient statement of faith in belief in the
- 3:11Trinity called the Athanasian Creed.
- 3:15Here's what it says. We worship one God in Trinity
- 3:18and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the persons nor
- 3:24dividing the substance. So the Father is not the Son,
- 3:27Son's not the Spirit, Spirit's not the Father.
- 3:30It's not one person in different roles or wearing different hats
- 3:36that each of them are distinct persons.
- 3:40But also it is not dividing the substance that there is not
- 3:45three gods, there is just one God.
- 3:47He says there's one person of the Father, another of the Son,
- 3:50and another of the Holy Spirit says, but the God head of the
- 3:54Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is all one, the
- 3:58glory equal, the majesty Co eternal, such as the Father is
- 4:02such as the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit.
- 4:05They are all equal in their glory, all equal in their
- 4:09majesty. They are the same, if you will.
- 4:11They're the same thing. They are God the Father is
- 4:15incomprehensible, the Son incomprehensible, and the Holy
- 4:18Spirit incomprehensible. The Father eternal, the Son
- 4:22eternal and the Holy Spirit eternal says and yet they are
- 4:25not 3 eternals, but one eternal. There's not three separate
- 4:30distinct gods, it's simply one. God says so likewise, so he says
- 4:36as also there are not 3 uncreated nor 3
- 4:39incomprehensible, but one uncreated and one
- 4:42incomprehensible. So likewise the Father is
- 4:45almighty, the Son is almighty and the Holy Spirit Almighty,
- 4:49and yet they are not 3 Almighty's but one Almighty.
- 4:52So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God,
- 4:56and yet they are not three gods, but one God.
- 4:59So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy
- 5:02Spirit Lord, and yet they are not 3 Lords, but one Lord.
- 5:07For like as we are compelled by the Christian truth to
- 5:10acknowledge every person by himself to be God and Lord, so
- 5:13we are forbidden to say that there are three gods or three
- 5:16Lords. The Father is made of none,
- 5:19neither created nor begotten. That is, no one has ever said of
- 5:23God the Father. You are my Son, he says.
- 5:27The Son is of the Father alone, not made nor created, but
- 5:33begotten. That between these two persons
- 5:35in the Trinity there is a relationship of Father and Son
- 5:39that the Father has called the Son, his Son.
- 5:43He is not created. There was no time when the sun
- 5:46was not in. This is what's called eternal
- 5:48begottenness. And that goes into a level of
- 5:52theology that we are not going to dive into on Tabernacle talk.
- 5:55Just know this. At the very foundation of the
- 5:59Trinity, at the foundation of true reality itself, is the love
- 6:05of a Father and a Son and the Holy Spirit.
- 6:08There's fellowship that is there.
- 6:10There is familial love. And So what is almost more true
- 6:13than anything else is genuine love.
- 6:17It's why we would say God is love, because there's been this
- 6:20love between the Father and love and the Son and the Spirit
- 6:24throughout all of eternity. So Son is of the Father alone,
- 6:27not made nor created, but begotten.
- 6:30The Holy Spirit is of the Father and of the Son, neither made nor
- 6:34created nor begotten. But proceeding that the Father
- 6:39and Son, they send the Spirit, and they have always been
- 6:43sending the Spirit. So there is one Father, not
- 6:46three fathers, one Son, not three Sons, one Holy Spirit, not
- 6:51three Holy Spirits. And in this Trinity none is a
- 6:54for or after another either. None is greater or less than
- 6:58another. But the whole 3 persons are Co
- 7:00eternal and Co equal. So that in all things as
- 7:04aforesaid, the Unity and Trinity and the Trinity and Unity is to
- 7:07be worshipped. So this is what scripture says
- 7:11about the Holy Spirit. We can see the Holy Spirit
- 7:15popping up in the second verse of scripture where it says now
- 7:19the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the
- 7:21surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was
- 7:25hovering over the surface of the water.
- 7:29When God breathes into mankind the breath of life, that's that
- 7:33same word as spirit in Hebrew. It's ruach.
- 7:37That is, God gives us his Spirit, His life giving spirit.
- 7:42And every breath that we breathe is a gift from God.
- 7:46And even from how Genesis 1 and 2 speak about it, I almost think
- 7:51of it in this way, that every breath that I'm breathe is every
- 7:55breath that I breathe is God the Holy Spirit continuing to give
- 7:59me life, breath after breath, moment after moment.
- 8:04And in the day that God chooses to Take Me Home that that I die,
- 8:09He will take his breath from me, His ruach, His Holy Spirit, and
- 8:15I will return to the Father who I was made to worship.
- 8:19So the Holy Spirit is seen right from the beginning portion of
- 8:23scripture and all throughout the Old Testament, you can see the
- 8:25Holy Spirit, He comes to empower God's people to accomplish the
- 8:30work of God. You can see it in Numbers 24
- 8:34when there's prophecy or 4th telling what will come in the
- 8:38future or true statements that will be made by prophets.
- 8:43The Holy Spirit is the one that equips them for that same in
- 8:47First Samuel that there are many prophets that are filled with
- 8:50the Holy Spirit of God and so they speak the words of God.
- 8:55You can see all throughout, all throughout the Old Testament,
- 8:59over and over and over again that the Holy Spirit is the one
- 9:02that communicates the word of God to the people of God.
- 9:07And it is through communing with God, the Holy Spirit, that
- 9:12people are able to speak God's Word.
- 9:16There are people certainly that use the Holy Spirit's
- 9:22empowerment of their life to not serve him, but to serve their
- 9:26own ends. So in Numbers 24, Balaam does
- 9:29that. And so even as the Holy Spirit
- 9:32is there, it's not that a person is unable to still do what they
- 9:38want outside of the will of the Holy Spirit.
- 9:41It's not that you are being controlled or puppeted by God.
- 9:45You are still able to do what you want.
- 9:47You're able to sin even as we see Balaam do, but the Holy
- 9:52Spirit is there to enable us to do what God has called us to do
- 9:57as well. That is when the Holy Spirit
- 9:59comes into your life, you're not an unknowing puppet.
- 10:03Instead, you are enabled by God to accomplish the will of God,
- 10:07something that you're not really able to do outside of the work
- 10:12in person of the Holy Spirit. Then we can even see in the Last
- 10:17Supper as Jesus is speaking with his disciples, He tells them I'm
- 10:22going to go away. The disciples are sad about it
- 10:25and Jesus tells them I'm going away, but I'm going to send you
- 10:29a comforter, a counselor. The word would be in Greek
- 10:35Paraclete. That is the advocate, the one
- 10:39who comes alongside to help. And Jesus tells them it is good
- 10:44for me to go because then you will have the Holy Spirit and He
- 10:48will teach you everything. He will remind you of everything
- 10:52that I have taught you and He will lead you into the way that
- 10:57you should go. And so Jesus, even speaking
- 11:00about the Holy Spirit, says God's presence, the person of
- 11:04the Holy Spirit living inside of you is an even greater joy.
- 11:09It's an even greater thing than having God the Son walking
- 11:14beside you. And what a comfort that is to us
- 11:17because often we think, man, if, if Jesus was here, then my life
- 11:21would be better. Maybe I'd obey God more.
- 11:24I would just have a better attitude.
- 11:27Who knows what would happen if Jesus was right here with me?
- 11:30But Jesus says it's even better for the Holy Spirit to live
- 11:34inside of us. And I want to note here real
- 11:38quick, the Holy Spirit is a person.
- 11:41He's not just some impersonal force.
- 11:44We can read about this in Acts chapter 13 and verse #2 When
- 11:48people think about personhood, there are three things that
- 11:52normally come to mind. It is mind, will and emotions.
- 11:57Mind, will and emotions is kind of what makes up a a person that
- 12:02they are able to think, to process You can have.
- 12:07So that's the the mind with will.
- 12:09They make choices and decisions and you have emotions that
- 12:13you're not just a robot. A robot could have, if you will,
- 12:16a mind and a will, but a robot doesn't have emotions.
- 12:20And so for people, for persons, they have emotions.
- 12:26And though God is perfect in his emotions, He's never sinful in
- 12:30the way that He emotes. He does express Himself to us in
- 12:35inspired Scripture as having emotions perfected, but He does
- 12:40have them. So Acts chapter 13 and verse #2
- 12:43they're the church that's at Antioch.
- 12:45It says as they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy
- 12:48Spirit said, set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work
- 12:52to which I have called them, hear the Holy Spirit.
- 12:56He speaks, he communicates. There is a mind here that is
- 13:00making communication to other people.
- 13:04And then in Acts chapter 16 and verse #6 we can hear about the
- 13:08will of the Spirit there. Paul and his missionary
- 13:12companions, they're going through the regions of Phergia
- 13:14and Galatia, and they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to
- 13:19speak the Word in Asia. They're forbidden by the Holy
- 13:23Spirit to speak the Word in Asia.
- 13:26So there you have this communication of what is the
- 13:30will of the Spirit, that he has a mind.
- 13:32He communicates information to individuals.
- 13:36We know that information can only come from information.
- 13:40You can't just have chaos that is expressed that would not mean
- 13:45anything to the person hearing just gibberish.
- 13:49And so here the Holy Spirit, an intelligent, all wise person, is
- 13:54communicating things to the early apostles, disciples and
- 13:59missionaries. And then we can read about the
- 14:01emotions of the Holy Spirit even in Ephesians chapter 4 and verse
- 14:05#30 where we read and don't grieve God's Holy Spirit.
- 14:10You were sealed by him for the day of redemption.
- 14:13That the Holy Spirit, he can be grieved.
- 14:17And what a thought that God, holy, perfect, unchanging God,
- 14:24he can be grieved by the actions and the words and the thoughts
- 14:28that you and I have. And so that's why we're
- 14:31encouraged in Ephesians not to grieve the Holy Spirit of God,
- 14:35but instead to follow him to to love him and to pay attention to
- 14:40him. So that's the personhood of the
- 14:44Holy Spirit, that he is mind, will, and emotions.
- 14:47I also think it's wonderful that the Holy Spirit is sent from the
- 14:52Father and the Son to accomplish the will of God here on earth,
- 14:57That if you will, God in every way.
- 14:59God as authority. The Father really pictures in a
- 15:04lot of ways. And so we learn how to be a good
- 15:07authority from paying attention to God the Father and what
- 15:11Scripture says that he does. We can learn about submission
- 15:14and obedience and sacrifice through looking at God the Son.
- 15:18And we can learn what it is to lay down our lives in love for
- 15:23another. We can learn what it is to
- 15:25listen to imperfect people or to be patient with those who are
- 15:28flawed. We can learn what it is to go
- 15:31through difficulties in our life and temptations through looking
- 15:36at Jesus, and then we can learn what it is to be about the
- 15:41mission that we have been given by looking at God the Holy
- 15:44Spirit, if you will. We learn how to accomplish the
- 15:48Great Commission through listening to the Holy Spirit who
- 15:52gave us the Great Commission and who each and every day He does
- 15:57amazing things in our world. I want to highlight just a
- 16:01couple of things that the Holy Spirit does.
- 16:03Number one, and probably most dear to my heart, the Holy
- 16:06Spirit indwells, baptizes, and seals us when we accept Christ
- 16:15as our Lord and Savior. OK, where would I get that from
- 16:19Ephesians chapter one, we are told that the Holy Spirit is the
- 16:22down payment of our inheritance until the redemption of the
- 16:26purchased possession. That is that God has set a seal,
- 16:31a promise on our lives that He will in fact bring us to glory,
- 16:36that the work that He began, He will end up finishing and
- 16:39accomplishing. And the Holy Spirit is the
- 16:42promise that He will do that. So the Holy Spirit seals us.
- 16:48You do not keep yourself saved. The Holy Spirit is the one that
- 16:52has sealed your salvation. And we can read about that in
- 16:55Ephesians 113, that the sealing isn't some later event that
- 17:00might take place, but instead that verse says in him you also
- 17:04were sealed with the holy, with the promised Holy Spirit when
- 17:07you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and
- 17:11when you believed. So when you believe the gospel,
- 17:14the Holy Spirit seals you. We can see that even in the book
- 17:17of Acts as Cornelius and his family, they were Gentiles.
- 17:20They were ones that have not previously been a part of the
- 17:23covenant relationship of God's people.
- 17:26And when they heard Peter preaching the gospel to them,
- 17:31even before he called for a decision, before they were
- 17:35baptized, any of that, as they heard and believed in their
- 17:38hearts, the Holy Spirit came on them and he sealed them and he
- 17:43indwelt them. And that was something that then
- 17:46the rest of the believers, mainly Jewish believers, at that
- 17:49point, they went, OK, well, these must really be saved
- 17:54individuals because they have the Holy Spirit.
- 17:56And so we need to baptize these people because that's what it is
- 18:01to to follow Jesus. And so if God has already, if
- 18:04you will, if he's already spiritually baptized, baptize
- 18:07them into Christ's body, then we need to physically baptize them
- 18:11into Christ's body. So that's the sealing end of
- 18:15things. Also mention the indwelling.
- 18:17So in the Old Testament, many people received the Holy Spirit
- 18:21at various times for a specific purpose.
- 18:24More often than not prophecy, sometimes in great battles,
- 18:29other times even in construction work.
- 18:31So as you look at the book of Exodus and the construction of
- 18:36the Tabernacle, you have the Holy Spirit empowers some of the
- 18:42workers so that they are able to do the good work in crafting and
- 18:48and molding and making what God had wanted for the Tabernacle.
- 18:54And so this was what the Holy Spirit did in the Old Testament.
- 18:57But in the New Testament, the wonderful truth is that the Holy
- 19:00Spirit, he indwells us, He lives in US from the moment that we
- 19:06believe in Christ as our Savior, and he is with us until the
- 19:11moment that we die. We can read in Romans chapter 8
- 19:14that if you don't have the Holy Spirit, you don't belong to God,
- 19:18and that the Holy Spirit is the one that he he prays for us.
- 19:23As Jesus said, He reminds us of everything that has been
- 19:26expressed in the word of God. I want to encourage you.
- 19:29I've said it off and on here, the Holy Spirit takes the Word
- 19:33of God to make the child of God more like the Son of God.
- 19:36And so you need to be in the Word of God personally.
- 19:39So that way the Holy Spirit, if you will, he has something to
- 19:43work with. And so that's what the Holy
- 19:47Spirit does. He, he indwells us, he seals us,
- 19:51He reminds us of everything that God has for us.
- 19:54The Holy Spirit works with our conscience that our conscience
- 19:59is something that we have as part of how God made us.
- 20:02Every person, regardless of whether or not they have the
- 20:04Holy Spirit has a conscience. But the Holy Spirit will use our
- 20:09conscience. Those feelings of you have done
- 20:11right or you have done wrong, and he will use that to guide
- 20:15you into truth. Now here's the problem.
- 20:18Many of us, we live, I say. Many of us, all of us live in a.
- 20:23Fallen sinful world in which our conscience is being constantly
- 20:28recalibrated to the wrong things so that we feel it's wrong to
- 20:33say the truth or that we feel it's right to partake in a
- 20:36particular sin. And so we need to constantly
- 20:39going back to the Word of God and to the Holy Spirit to say,
- 20:42God, would you show me what truth is?
- 20:45Would you show me what is really right and really wrong in your
- 20:48sight? Not in my own.
- 20:50And so the Holy Spirit works with the conscience.
- 20:53So one thing that I heard often growing up was obey every
- 20:57impulse of the Holy Spirit that when God tells you to be kind,
- 21:01when God tells you to be generous, when God tells you
- 21:05that that was incorrect, that action that you took of those
- 21:07words that you said, you need to listen to him.
- 21:11And so that's what we are called to do.
- 21:14Don't ignore your conscience. God pleased it there for a
- 21:17reason. And especially with the Holy
- 21:19Spirit working in and through you, that is something that you
- 21:24do not have the luxury of avoiding.
- 21:27If you want to learn more about the conscience, I feel like I
- 21:29mention it every three or four months.
- 21:31Please read the book Conscience by Andrew Nacelli is an
- 21:37incredible book. It's by it's from the publishers
- 21:40Crossway. And so I encourage you to go to
- 21:42crossway.org and look up the book Conscience and it is
- 21:46excellent. One other thing that the Holy
- 21:49Spirit does that I want to mention as we end today is the
- 21:53Holy Spirit. Jesus said in the Last Supper,
- 21:56He convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgement.
- 22:03The Holy Spirit is the one that brings conviction to the hearts
- 22:07of mankind, and he convicts of sin that what we are doing and
- 22:12saying and thinking it is wrong. And so he convicts of sin, He
- 22:16convicts of righteousness that there are good actions that
- 22:19people ought to be taking, that they are not taking.
- 22:23So he convicts of sin what we do that we ought not do.
- 22:27And he convicts of righteousness the things we should do that we
- 22:31are not doing, including, of course, belief in Christ.
- 22:34And then it says he convicts the world of judgment, that is, that
- 22:39there is a final reckoning. Now, this is something that
- 22:43happens within someone's conscience.
- 22:45This is not something that everyone's not looking at their
- 22:49life necessarily in terms of the great White Throne judgment.
- 22:53They're just is often subtly going, no, there has to be
- 22:58punishment for bad. And we're more cognizant of this
- 23:01as it relates to other people. We say that murderer or that
- 23:05thief, they ought to pay for their crimes.
- 23:07There ought to be justice for what was done in this abuse
- 23:11situation. People understand some of that.
- 23:13They know that there ought to be justice that if you will, this
- 23:17life is not the end. People don't don't quite often
- 23:22accept that, but inside of their conscience they know.
- 23:27And so they are called to, they are called to repent of their
- 23:32sin, to believe in righteousness because there is a judgment that
- 23:36is coming. And so I want to encourage you
- 23:38even as you witness. Those are the main things that
- 23:43people's souls are telling them that yeah, there is sin and
- 23:49sometimes I have partaken in that.
- 23:51There is righteousness and I haven't lived up to a perfect
- 23:55standard. And there should be justice for
- 23:59wrongs that are done in the world, both that other people do
- 24:02and the wrongs that I myself have perpetrated in the world.
- 24:06And so I encourage you even in your evangelism work along with
- 24:09the Holy Spirit, that the things that he is telling them on the
- 24:12inside, you tell them it on the outside as well.
- 24:18And so as you do that, I know that you are working along with
- 24:21the Holy Spirit. I've mentioned often before as
- 24:23well, the Holy Spirit takes our prayers to the Father, bringing
- 24:26what we should be bringing to the Father.
- 24:28He brings that. And so as you pray, as you
- 24:31evangelize, as you worship Christ, all of that is a
- 24:36reflection of the work of the Holy Spirit.
- 24:39So join him in the work and mission that he is doing.
- 24:42I want to mention one last thing as we end because of the Holy
- 24:46Spirit is omnipresent as God is, I do have a little bit of
- 24:53umbrage against a popular phrasing, particularly in
- 24:57charismatic circles, about something like Holy Spirit, you
- 25:02are welcome here. Come flood this space and fill
- 25:05the atmosphere. Things like that which properly
- 25:12understood God, you are everywhere and but you are not
- 25:16doing the same things in every place.
- 25:19You are doing unique things in unique places.
- 25:22And so God, I'm asking for you to do something unique here and
- 25:26now. Even as we would read in
- 25:27Ephesians chapter 5, we're called to be filled with the
- 25:30Spirit, that the Holy Spirit is there, but we want to allow him
- 25:34more control over our lives, that we exhibit more of the
- 25:38fruit of the Spirit, more of his character.
- 25:41And so I want to encourage you don't think that the Holy Spirit
- 25:45is not yet wherever you are. The Holy Spirit is everywhere.
- 25:49He's God. He's omnipresent.
- 25:51The prayer request that we can have is God.
- 25:54I want you to do something special in me right now, in this
- 25:58place, right now. I want to allow you more
- 26:02control. I want to become more loving,
- 26:04joyful, patient, peace filled, loving good towards others.
- 26:10I want to exhibit self-control. That's what it means to be
- 26:13spirit filled. To be spirit filled is not just
- 26:17that there's a great time of music.
- 26:19To be spirit filled is not that a bunch of other outside people
- 26:25come to know the Lord. To be spirit filled is at its
- 26:28core you becoming more like Jesus through allowing the Holy
- 26:32Spirit to call the shots more and more in your life.
- 26:37I encourage you this week be spirit filled.
- 26:40And as we are filled with the Spirit, it'll overflow in song.
- 26:43It'll mean that we evangelize, that people are saved.
- 26:47All of those things flow out from that because our God, he
- 26:51does miracles, he works wonders. And so how wonderful that we
- 26:55have a Holy Spirit that indwells us, that has made us part of the
- 27:00body of Christ. That was the one thing I didn't
- 27:02mention First Corinthians 12. It says that the Holy Spirit, he
- 27:05baptizes us, He immerses us, he, he places us into the body of
- 27:10Christ when we are safe. So the thing that connects you
- 27:14and I and all of the people that are saved at Tabernacle and all
- 27:17the people in, you know, Freedom Baptist in Dundalk that are
- 27:21saved. What unites us all together is
- 27:24the Holy Spirit and that we've been placed into the body of
- 27:27Christ to become the bride of Christ by the Holy Spirit.
- 27:32So I hope this was an encouragement to you.
- 27:34If you have any questions, please let me know and I would
- 27:37love to talk with you more about this because the Bible is God's
- 27:41revelation to us. Oh, I should also mention that
- 27:43the Holy Spirit gave us the Word of God and that said over and
- 27:46over and over and over again that the Holy Spirit is the one
- 27:49that gives us inspired scripture.
- 27:52So, so much more could be said about the Holy Spirit, but we
- 27:55are well past time for today. So thank you for tuning in.
- 27:58The next two episodes are going to be some Ask Anything episodes
- 28:02and looking forward to those times and seeing some of what
- 28:06you all have asked about the Christian life for the Bible and
- 28:10looking forward to that time together.
