- 0:01Speaker 1: Keeps you in line. That's not an easy thing to do.
- 0:03Speaker 2: No, No, coach's wife job tough.
- 0:06Speaker 1: That's a hard job.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Coach's wife job.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You don't sign up for some of the stuff you
- 0:10Speaker 1: got to do right, And I mean.
- 0:11Speaker 2: It's just just when it's going, you know. For me,
- 0:15Speaker 2: it's different. I grew up in Jersey City. My dad
- 0:17Speaker 2: was a coach, my brother. I mean just I grew
- 0:20Speaker 2: up in this like crazy competitive household, blue collar city.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And but my wife is not from the sports world,
- 0:28Speaker 2: like she doesn't understand why we all care so much.
- 0:32Speaker 2: She does, so that perspective is good for me though.
- 0:35Speaker 2: If I came home and she wanted to say, like, Yo,
- 0:37Speaker 2: you should have played zone or you know, why don't
- 0:41Speaker 2: you play Useff Moore? I mean, she has favorite players
- 0:43Speaker 2: that she has, but she keeps it under keeps a
- 0:46Speaker 2: lid on it. But it's good for me though, because
- 0:49Speaker 2: I can't go home and talk about it anymore. I
- 0:51Speaker 2: just by the time I get home, I need to
- 0:53Speaker 2: just relax because I'm like a fuck nuclear trenobol. You know.
- 1:03Speaker 1: So we're going to get are we on the air soon?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Here?
- 1:05Speaker 1: What are we doing?
- 1:06Speaker 2: We're back?
- 1:07Speaker 1: Oh, we're back. We're having a casual conversation. We are
- 1:10Speaker 1: back with Danhurly.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I thought we're sorry where we were.
- 1:14Speaker 1: But talking about relaxing is you were just sort of
- 1:17Speaker 1: going through that. You know, you're one hundred miles an hour,
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know, sunrise, sunset and basketball all about that. What
- 1:24Speaker 1: do you do to relax when you get home?
- 1:26Speaker 2: What can you do?
- 1:28Speaker 1: What do you do to kind of go okay, I'm
- 1:30Speaker 1: leaving that back there for a few hours.
- 1:32Speaker 2: It's hard enough to stop thinking about it, though, you know,
- 1:34Speaker 2: it's like, really it's a challenge, is because you know,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you were all pretty obsessed with it, you know, I
- 1:40Speaker 2: think that's the only way to do it, and so
- 1:43Speaker 2: it's hard enough to think about it. It's hard to
- 1:45Speaker 2: think about it, you know, in the shower, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: before you go to bed, or while you're doing something else.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Just how people are playing upcoming games, if you've got
- 1:55Speaker 2: recruits making decisions. I mean, it's just not something if
- 1:58Speaker 2: you do this job casually, like you're not gonna win
- 2:01Speaker 2: a lot and you're just gonna it's just gonna be torture.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It's gonna be torture for you and the fans, your family.
- 2:07Speaker 1: So speaking of recruiting. You've been on the road and
- 2:12Speaker 1: talking to a lot of people and bringing better and
- 2:15Speaker 1: better players to Yukon. Has it gotten easier in any
- 2:19Speaker 1: way since winning? I'm thinking it does, but you know,
- 2:22Speaker 1: you know better.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I think moving forward from this past season, I didn't
- 2:28Speaker 2: think we probably got as much after the first championship.
- 2:32Speaker 2: We definitely had more interest by by better players, but
- 2:36Speaker 2: you know, we had just it was our first one,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and uh, you know, we had Jordan, we had Hawk
- 2:41Speaker 2: in the draft, Andre went early second, Admica was a
- 2:46Speaker 2: two white player. But then you win it again and
- 2:48Speaker 2: you're thirty seven and three and now you've got Steph
- 2:51Speaker 2: going four, Donovan going seven, you know, Team New and
- 2:57Speaker 2: Cam we could we would have had five players draft
- 3:00Speaker 2: that after back to back. So if you're if you're
- 3:02Speaker 2: a top player, we should be at the top of
- 3:05Speaker 2: your list, you know you would think we should be. Yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 2: but you know, the game has changed a little bit.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You know, I think our timing with Nil becoming more important.
- 3:16Speaker 2: If this was like pre Nil where we're at as
- 3:19Speaker 2: a program right now, we would I mean every kid
- 3:21Speaker 2: would want to come to Yukon. Yeah, but you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: but I still think that we're able. We're gonna be
- 3:26Speaker 2: able to get the people that fit us. And it's
- 3:29Speaker 2: not always a player, it's ranked fifth or seventh.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You know, well that's I think Yukon fans appreciate. They
- 3:37Speaker 1: they love the game of basketball. Obviously they love to
- 3:40Speaker 1: watch this team play. The last couple of years, it's
- 3:42Speaker 1: just been beautiful basketball. But they also loved the kind
- 3:45Speaker 1: of characters a character you bring to the table yourself,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but also the players. I mean you talk to these
- 3:53Speaker 1: players and and you know, buy and large, they're pretty
- 3:56Speaker 1: smart dudes, and they know what they're doing, and they're
- 3:58Speaker 1: well coached and disciplined, all less stuff. It all adds up.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, these guys they make a really they
- 4:04Speaker 2: make an exceptional incredible commitment to it. I mean, think
- 4:08Speaker 2: about Donovan and Steph were picked that high and they
- 4:12Speaker 2: they were fourth and fifth on the shot on the
- 4:14Speaker 2: on the team and field goal attempts. You know, it's
- 4:17Speaker 2: like they were fourth and fifth on the team in
- 4:20Speaker 2: points per game, but they were just about just had
- 4:23Speaker 2: these guys that were obviously the NBA level talent, but
- 4:26Speaker 2: just they want to win. You know, they're really they're
- 4:29Speaker 2: about Yukon. They want to really win. They're there. They
- 4:32Speaker 2: also want to get to the NBA, but they're not.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They're actually putting Yukon ahead of that, which is rare.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I think, so, but we're yeah, I mean, we wouldn't
- 4:42Speaker 2: want to come play for us right now? I think
- 4:45Speaker 2: are are What makes it fun is obviously, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 2: like the one and done guys like Steph or when
- 4:51Speaker 2: you get a cam spencer for a one year portal
- 4:55Speaker 2: and it's just perfect, It's it's awesome. I think Liam
- 4:59Speaker 2: when he gets healthy, could do some of that. But then,
- 5:02Speaker 2: like you know, it's so much fun. Like Jayden Ross
- 5:04Speaker 2: is right now, he's like trending super super high level,
- 5:07Speaker 2: like really where we're looking at each other and saying
- 5:10Speaker 2: this is happening for him right now, Like this guy
- 5:12Speaker 2: looks like the next big time player. Those are fun
- 5:16Speaker 2: because he was not highly recruited. He was not I
- 5:18Speaker 2: don't think he was in the top hunter and thirty
- 5:21Speaker 2: or whatever. But you may watch him this winter just
- 5:24Speaker 2: like take off.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah who is this guy?
- 5:26Speaker 2: Right? Yeah? Like where did this? And that is what's
- 5:29Speaker 2: I think cool about the way that we do it,
- 5:31Speaker 2: where you know, when when I'm when we're not taking
- 5:34Speaker 2: a million players from the portal. We're not trying to
- 5:36Speaker 2: buy our team when an I l we we don't
- 5:38Speaker 2: want it to be reason why we don't have talented players,
- 5:41Speaker 2: but we don't want it to be the driver.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Aiden Mahoney at mohegan a few weeks ago. There. First
- 5:47Speaker 1: time we saw him in uniform and a game competing.
- 5:50Speaker 1: We saw him in Saint Mary's obviously in the tournament
- 5:52Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. He was impressive. To me,
- 5:55Speaker 1: he's a feisty dude. I liked him. I mean, he
- 5:57Speaker 1: he looks like he's going to fit in. He looks
- 6:00Speaker 1: like he's got some of that that grit that you like.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And uh, he looks like he, I want to say,
- 6:05Speaker 1: fit fits in that that cam spencer you know mode.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But but he was pretty impressive.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, he uh, I mean the lights. You know, he
- 6:14Speaker 2: played better under the lights. I mean, it's a guy
- 6:16Speaker 2: that scored a thousand points in uh in two years
- 6:19Speaker 2: at Saint Mary's, obviously a very reputable top twenty program
- 6:23Speaker 2: in the country. So he Yeah, he's got the track record.
- 6:26Speaker 2: You know, we need him to play on the ball,
- 6:28Speaker 2: probably more than he played there, and you know that
- 6:33Speaker 2: he's transitioning to and getting better at because that's where
- 6:37Speaker 2: we need him to be. You know, it's uh, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: we want to stay as tall as we can at guard.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You know, that's a big part of our success the
- 6:44Speaker 2: last couple of years was we've had big guards. Yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 2: you know, t Nu was six y four plus, Cam
- 6:51Speaker 2: was six three plus and strong, and Steph was six
- 6:54Speaker 2: to six. Andre Jackson was six to seven. You know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: so we we it's hard to play both Has and
- 7:02Speaker 2: Aiden together. We will be able to do it at times,
- 7:04Speaker 2: but like the emergence of some of these other bigger
- 7:07Speaker 2: wing guys is going to be critical. But we need
- 7:09Speaker 2: him to be able to play on the ball a lot.
- 7:13Speaker 2: That would get us to our highest ceiling if he
- 7:16Speaker 2: got comfortable there. Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Terris Reid came from Michigan. Six ' ten guy a
- 7:20Speaker 1: couple of years of Michigan, has some pretty impressive performances there.
- 7:24Speaker 1: First happened at uri game. He was kind of feeling
- 7:26Speaker 1: his way through it. That's being kind.
- 7:29Speaker 2: You stumbled sort of thing. Would did you.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Say something to him at half time? Did you say
- 7:34Speaker 1: anything to him at half time?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Not after that?
- 7:37Speaker 1: I mean you were talking to him.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Well, it's tough, I mean it's tough for any of
- 7:41Speaker 2: these guys. It's even me. I'm probably been tougher on
- 7:46Speaker 2: the team because of the last team I saw play
- 7:49Speaker 2: in April. They played so well, and then we're starting
- 7:52Speaker 2: over with a team that's just starting, not the end
- 7:56Speaker 2: product of that other team. So it's like that's a
- 7:59Speaker 2: little bit. You know. Then the thing that sucks about
- 8:03Speaker 2: practice is it's like you're coaching offense and defense because
- 8:06Speaker 2: you have ten of your players on the court, Whereas
- 8:09Speaker 2: it actually gets easier to coach the games because you're
- 8:11Speaker 2: either on offense or defense. So like right now in
- 8:14Speaker 2: practice today, if somebody did something good on offense, I'm
- 8:16Speaker 2: pissed at the defense. You know. If somebody got a rebound,
- 8:21Speaker 2: somebody didn't get the rebound.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, so like you're somebody screwed up.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you're just you're so, you're But Tarris has got
- 8:28Speaker 2: great talent. He just uh, we got to coach him
- 8:32Speaker 2: into the identity that will allow him to be like
- 8:35Speaker 2: really efficient. You know, he shot a little bit over
- 8:37Speaker 2: fifty percent from the field at Michigan. He should shoot
- 8:41Speaker 2: sixty seven percent from the field. You know, Like he
- 8:43Speaker 2: shouldn't turn the ball over the way he did there.
- 8:46Speaker 2: He should he should be a dominant player around the paint,
- 8:49Speaker 2: and that's what we need because Samson's going to be
- 8:52Speaker 2: awesome in what he does for us. But having the
- 8:54Speaker 2: two centers, and I'm not that concerned about them right now.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I think that those guys statically are going to be
- 9:01Speaker 2: able to do their job at their position. I think
- 9:03Speaker 2: they'll get between them like eighteen points and ten or
- 9:08Speaker 2: eleven rebounds, and they'll do it together. We've had great
- 9:11Speaker 2: tandems there, so I think they'll be fine.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been a great formula, all right, Dan Hurley
- 9:15Speaker 1: with us you con men's basketball coach yourself back to
- 9:19Speaker 1: back from Learpo
