Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: My father taught me many things here. You know what
- 0:06Speaker 1: they say.
- 0:06Speaker 2: He taught me, keep your friends close, but your enemies close.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Time to check in on the team down south. They
- 0:14Speaker 2: have done absolutely nothing wrong.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But they're blue.
- 0:17Speaker 3: This is the Red and Blue on the Sean O'Connell

- 0:50Speaker 3: Quinn brings us Red and Blue, where we welcome our
- 0:53Speaker 3: BYU insider, friend of the program, Jerem Jordan.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Jerem, welcome back. How are you, sir?
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's good to have a game this week. You know,
- 1:01Speaker 1: it's fun as bi-weeks are. They aren't fun. I liked watching,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you know, eight ranked teams go down last week. We
- 1:07Speaker 1: knew about six of them, but cause there were six
- 1:10Speaker 1: ranked matches, but Hey, you always got a conference game
- 1:12Speaker 1: this week. Let's go baby.
- 1:22Speaker 3: or BYU. I thought TCU had some athletes had some
- 1:25Speaker 3: potential here. I don't know if I still feel the
- 1:28Speaker 3: same way about a two and two horn frogs team
- 1:31Speaker 3: that didn't look particularly great against North Carolina. Didn't look
- 1:35Speaker 3: particularly great on the road against UCF, but you know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: it's early in the season. I could be under crediting
- 1:43Speaker 3: North Carolina and UCF for beating the horn frogs. Does,
- 1:47Speaker 3: does this TCU team look like you thought the one
- 1:50Speaker 3: that BYU might be facing in this matchup?
- 2:09Speaker 1: if
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm TCU, I'm going, Hey, everything we've got top 10
- 2:13Speaker 1: team in our house, we can kind of rectify this. Right.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So there's a certain sense of urgency that BYU has
- 2:18Speaker 1: right now going, we're getting everybody's best shot to the
- 2:21Speaker 1: top 10 team here and in league and a certain desperation. Yeah.
- 2:25Speaker 1: The North Carolina loss was weird. You could chalk that
- 2:27Speaker 1: up to a singular event, but as we've seen, if
- 2:29Speaker 1: you go to Dublin, you come back and you lose
- 2:32Speaker 1: that game, you come back kind of mess things up.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I would not go to that game ever. Cause we've
- 2:38Speaker 1: seen that And then last week, yeah, UCF, not a
- 2:42Speaker 1: world beater. And VCU's 0-2 against Power Forward teams. They
- 2:47Speaker 1: scored 23 points in those two games. They do not
- 2:49Speaker 1: look nearly as explosive as last year. They were supposed
- 2:53Speaker 1: to be a little more balanced with... Gordon Sam is
- 2:56Speaker 1: coming in the OC from UConn with Jim Moore. Jim
- 2:59Speaker 1: Moore goes to CSU. That was BYU's last game. Now
- 3:02Speaker 1: they're facing Sam with the new OC there. You know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: a little more balanced on offense. Nope. They were anything
- 3:08Speaker 1: but last week. So not even close. And this has
- 3:11Speaker 1: been a TCU team that's won 18. games last two years,
- 3:14Speaker 1: they've been pretty good. I know it's been four years
- 3:16Speaker 1: since the run to the national championship game, but yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: there's some struggles, but BYU has got to be just,
- 3:22Speaker 1: everyone's going to say, Hey, this could fix our season.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And this could be the highlight of our season. So
- 3:26Speaker 1: BYU has got to show up. And I think they're
- 3:28Speaker 1: prepared and ready.
- 3:29Speaker 3: When we talked last week, neither you or I liked
- 3:31Speaker 3: the timing of this bi-week for BYU, but you take
- 3:34Speaker 3: them as they come and you can't change it.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And you know, they, I'm sure they did their best
- 3:39Speaker 2: to handle it.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:39Speaker 2: What are you hearing? How did practice go?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Did the guys with the bumper bruise get as healthy
- 3:44Speaker 3: as they wanted to? I have some insight on what
- 3:47Speaker 3: Bear Bachmeier was up to. I'll tell you about that
- 3:49Speaker 3: here in just a second. But what are you hearing
- 3:51Speaker 3: about BYU's bye week?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Speaker 3 0 Yeah, they, they got a little healthier,
- 3:56Speaker 1: which is good. You know, there's a few guys that
- 3:57Speaker 1: didn't play in the Colorado state game that should be back,
- 4:00Speaker 1: you know, a tiger Bachmeier receiver, Kyle support choke on
- 4:04Speaker 1: that offensive one, Roger Sully, a pocket tight end. So
- 4:06Speaker 1: that's a, that's good. Bad news is BYU starting my tackle.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Andrew Gentry had ankle surgery. He's going to be out
- 4:13Speaker 1: for probably the majority of the regular season. It sounds
- 4:16Speaker 1: like he didn't rule out, you know, and it's not
- 4:19Speaker 1: an end of season injury, but The guys behind him
- 4:22Speaker 1: are talented, but very inexperienced. A combined eight games played
- 4:26Speaker 1: zero starts with a bot. Muli Talo and COC while
- 4:30Speaker 1: Latu Finau bought us a really talented four-star guy at
- 4:33Speaker 1: a lone peak that could get some real run here.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And then COC while it was a red shirt last year,
- 4:38Speaker 1: although that doesn't exist anymore. So that's, that's a loss.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Andrew Gentry was literally the most experienced player on the
- 4:44Speaker 1: team with 43 games played. you know, national championship of Michigan,
- 4:48Speaker 1: like red shirt, senior fifth year guy, that's, that's a
- 4:51Speaker 1: tough blow. But this BYU align, I think has a
- 4:55Speaker 1: lot of real strength with it. TJ Woods does a
- 4:57Speaker 1: nice job. So that's kind of the, the big negative
- 5:00Speaker 1: coming out of the bi-week is shoot. There was a,
- 5:02Speaker 1: there was a, you know, extensive injury. Other good news.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Kyler Casper got engaged. So, you know what, off the
- 5:09Speaker 1: field win for a wide receiver, Kyler Casper, congrats to him.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Speaker 3 05,050 All right.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Congrats to him on the Gentry injury. I think I saw,
- 5:16Speaker 3: he thought it was just kind of like a sprain,
- 5:18Speaker 3: like nothing serious.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Is that, did I hear that correctly?
- 5:21Speaker 3: And then you wanted to get it checked out and
- 5:23Speaker 3: they're like, no, this needs to be surgically repaired. So
- 5:26Speaker 3: kind of a surprise even for him that it was
- 5:28Speaker 3: that bad.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Speaker 3 5th and 6th. Yeah. So it happened in
- 5:31Speaker 1: the first quarter and he, it kind of felt weird.
- 5:34Speaker 1: You know, he, he got shot up at halftime and
- 5:36Speaker 1: then BYU dominated. He came out kind of midway through
- 5:39Speaker 1: the third quarter. And then after the game on the
- 5:41Speaker 1: end on Sunday, you know, they looked at it and
- 5:44Speaker 1: then unfortunately it was required surgery. So he had the
- 5:47Speaker 1: surgery yesterday and No exact timeline on it, but they
- 5:50Speaker 1: have not said, hey, it's season ending. So hopefully for
- 5:54Speaker 1: what could be a very awesome, you know, kind of
- 5:56Speaker 1: postseason for BYU potentially with hopefully a big 12 title
- 6:00Speaker 1: appearance and or college football playoffs and things go great,
- 6:03Speaker 1: that he could be back at some point later on.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I ended up at the Santa Ana airport flying back
- 6:10Speaker 3: home this weekend after a trip to the beach with
- 6:12Speaker 3: my wife and lovely children. And the Bachmeier brothers were there.
- 6:18Speaker 3: same flight and delayed flight. And, uh, it was, it
- 6:23Speaker 3: was really interesting to observe how many people in Southern California,
- 6:28Speaker 3: obviously people flying back to Utah.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So most of them, Utah residents, but, uh, how many.
- 6:32Speaker 3: People, you know, are on the Bachmeier train. He probably
- 6:36Speaker 3: had to take like a hundred or more photos with
- 6:39Speaker 3: people just waiting at the airport in California.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I was like, man, this is, this is a wild
- 6:44Speaker 2: time in college football.
- 6:46Speaker 1: They didn't want to take him with MMA legend Sean O'Connell? Like,
- 6:49Speaker 1: what the freak? Come on, man. I know. I'm surprised
- 6:52Speaker 1: Tiger didn't actually fly the plane. He has his pilot's license.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And he actually has an NIL deal with some company
- 7:00Speaker 1: in Provo that kind of connected him to help him
- 7:03Speaker 1: get his hours, which is super cool. Did you see
- 7:06Speaker 1: the video bear also over the weekend where he went
- 7:09Speaker 1: to a baseball stadium and Cosmo was over in the
- 7:14Speaker 1: corner and a kid watched by bear and bears like, yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I can sign it. And the kid like holds the
- 7:18Speaker 1: ball away from him. Like, I don't know who you are.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And then he runs to Cosmo. Speaker 0 7, it
- 7:23Speaker 1: was Barstool sports. Put it out there. It was very funny.
- 7:26Speaker 3: That's amazing. I did not see that, but that's, that,
- 7:29Speaker 3: that shows you the power of Cosmo. That's why they're
- 7:31Speaker 3: charging three grand for him to come take a picture
- 7:33Speaker 3: with you at the Notre Dame game.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Do we lose Jerem? We might've lost Jerem. Jerem, are
- 7:43Speaker 2: you still there? All right. A bad connection.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think we'll have to reconnect with Jerem Jordan. BYU
- 7:55Speaker 3: coming off a bye week. And look, I know that
- 7:59Speaker 3: people get bothered that we talk about them for 20
- 8:01Speaker 3: minutes every week, but this is a really good BYU
- 8:04Speaker 3: team that when healthier is a big time problem. Now,
- 8:09Speaker 3: LJ Martin, the defending returning offensive player of the year
- 8:15Speaker 3: in this big 12 conference right now is averaging almost eight.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Yards of carry. He's only scored three touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I say only because I think that that's a guy that,
- 8:26Speaker 3: you know, as the season progresses, they'll probably lean more
- 8:29Speaker 3: and more on. I think he's a guy that you're
- 8:31Speaker 3: going to see, you know, potentially get more touches and
- 8:35Speaker 3: more targets. He has zero pass catching touchdowns, by the way,
- 8:39Speaker 3: but he's averaging 7.8 yards of carry. That's top 25
- 8:43Speaker 3: in the nation right now. And only he's only carried
- 8:49Speaker 3: the ball 42 times through three games, which is not,
- 8:55Speaker 3: a heavy use of someone with his level of accomplishment, right? Hey, James,
- 9:01Speaker 3: I think we got to reconnect with Jeremy. He got
- 9:03Speaker 3: to hear me.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Oh, there he is. What happened?
- 9:06Speaker 1: Oh, nothing. Literally nothing. I don't know what changed, but
- 9:09Speaker 1: here we are. Okay.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Weird.
- 9:11Speaker 3: You're back that we, you disappeared for a second. And
- 9:15Speaker 3: we were, we were talking about.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I can't remember. We were talking about Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 2: We're talking about LJ.
- 9:23Speaker 3: How much more do they use LJ Martin now that
- 9:26Speaker 3: they get into big 12 play?
- 9:27Speaker 1: Speaker 3 6, Aaron Roderick has said out loud, listen,
- 9:31Speaker 1: this guy is one of our best players. If not
- 9:33Speaker 1: our best player, we need to get him the ball
- 9:35Speaker 1: 20 to 25 times. He said, he's keenly aware of
- 9:38Speaker 1: how many carries he has within it, within a game,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you know, going into a game, kind of what probably
- 9:43Speaker 1: needs to happen for viewer to have success. when he's
- 9:46Speaker 1: had at least 80 yards or more rushing in a game,
- 9:50Speaker 1: do I has not lost a game when he's worn
- 9:52Speaker 1: a BYU uniform the past four years. And so that's
- 9:55Speaker 1: a big deal.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Speaker 2 05,050 05,050 05,050 05,050 05,050 05,050 yards or better.
- 10:01Speaker 3: They haven't lost in his four years in.
- 10:04Speaker 2: A Cougar uniform.
- 10:06Speaker 1: That's correct. So get him the fricking rock, right?
- 10:11Speaker 3: Or somehow prevent him from getting the rock. If you're
- 10:13Speaker 3: anyone who's not BYU, that's a wild stat. He's that
- 10:18Speaker 3: integral to their success.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Yes. And, and he's that good. Like early on when
- 10:23Speaker 1: he was a freshman, Aaron was saying, this isn't, this
- 10:25Speaker 1: is an NFL running back. Like it was a big
- 10:28Speaker 1: deal when he was, he was originally committed to Texas tech,
- 10:31Speaker 1: by the way, as an El Paso kid in west Texas,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and then switched over to Stanford, beat Stanford to end
- 10:38Speaker 1: the 2022 regular season. And like hours after that game
- 10:43Speaker 1: or the next day, David Shaw resigns and then LJD commits.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And then he comes to provost. So that, that whole
- 10:48Speaker 1: sequence was really important, but the, the 80 thing, I mean,
- 10:53Speaker 1: it's 17 and ocean. And then the other step going
- 10:57Speaker 1: into the TCU game, that's interesting is the, if BYU
- 11:01Speaker 1: holds TCU under 30, there's six and oh, if TCU
- 11:06Speaker 1: scores more than 30, oh, and seven. So basically don't
- 11:10Speaker 1: let Jayden Craig just kind of get loose here with,
- 11:13Speaker 1: with his guys. And you're probably in a good spot historically.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Speaking of that, for BYU, they scored 63 points against
- 11:24Speaker 3: Utah Tech. That's what you're supposed to do against Utah Tech.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They scored 28 against Arizona. I think Arizona's a good team.
- 11:32Speaker 3: I don't know if they're a great team. They put
- 11:34Speaker 3: up 41 against Colorado State. It's not yet... the highest
- 11:40Speaker 3: powered offense that we've seen at BYU over the decades.
- 11:44Speaker 3: But is this offense you think capable of those, you know,
- 11:49Speaker 3: making it, you know, 42 points a game? Is this
- 11:52Speaker 3: an offense that will win games that way? Can this
- 11:55Speaker 3: BYU team get into the kind of like track meet
- 12:00Speaker 3: boat race sort of games and come out successful? Or because,
- 12:03Speaker 3: I mean, you got a quarterback who can run, you've
- 12:06Speaker 3: got LJ Martin. Is this a team that, is going
- 12:08Speaker 3: to be more apt to like in big 12 play
- 12:12Speaker 3: and potentially beyond, or are they trying to keep things
- 12:15Speaker 3: a little bit tighter?
- 12:17Speaker 1: I think they are more explosive and more high powered
- 12:19Speaker 1: than you think. You know, they came out at halftime
- 12:22Speaker 1: of the Utah tech game. They came out about halfway
- 12:26Speaker 1: through the third quarter against TCU or Colorado state. Excuse me.
- 12:29Speaker 1: If the starters had stayed in the game, Sean, they
- 12:31Speaker 1: would have 50 or 60 points, but they pulled them
- 12:34Speaker 1: to keep them healthy, to get back up some good
- 12:36Speaker 1: valuable reps, which is good now. Cause you're playing a
- 12:38Speaker 1: different right tackle. Some of those guys got some reps.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I know some BYU fans complained about some of that,
- 12:42Speaker 1: but guess what? Those guys have valuable snaps. Now they're
- 12:45Speaker 1: against starters this week. So according to pro football network,
- 12:48Speaker 1: BYU's offense is number 22 in the country, expected points
- 12:52Speaker 1: added per play eight yards per play fourth points per
- 12:55Speaker 1: drive eight. So I would argue they are really explosive.
- 12:58Speaker 1: They are, they are very good. I think they can
- 13:00Speaker 1: go toe to toe in a game like that. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: BYU is more kind of a what they're very chameleon.
- 13:09Speaker 1: We saw that last year when LJ Martin got hurt
- 13:12Speaker 1: against Iowa state and he didn't play against Georgia tech.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Then bear Bachmeier had to throw for 300 plus and
- 13:17Speaker 1: not have LJ there. They can do what it. it,
- 13:21Speaker 1: they need to do to win because bear Bachmeier is
- 13:24Speaker 1: 15 and two as a starter, he's not a young
- 13:25Speaker 1: pup anymore. And so, yeah, if they need to pass
- 13:29Speaker 1: the ball a ton to beat Arizona, you know, and
- 13:31Speaker 1: you get Kyler Casper with two touchdowns and legend glass,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you're scoring on the ground and getting a 61 yard.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And then so be it. If you need LJ market score,
- 13:39Speaker 1: three touchdowns in the first quarter and establish the ground game,
- 13:42Speaker 1: you can do that. I think BYU can win a
- 13:44Speaker 1: lot of different ways. And Oh, by the way, BYU
- 13:48Speaker 1: against unranked teams has an interception in 12 straight games.
- 13:52Speaker 1: That's the longest streak in the country. In that situation,
- 13:55Speaker 1: BYU takes the ball away. They play winning football, whatever
- 13:58Speaker 1: that looks like on any given Saturday, Speaker 2.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They're last in the conference in sacks.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Now, I don't know how important this stat is right
- 14:07Speaker 3: now in college football, because you know how quickly teams
- 14:12Speaker 3: are getting the ball out of the quarterback's hands by design. Typically,
- 14:17Speaker 3: if you pressure an opposing quarterback, that's good for your defense. Again,
- 14:20Speaker 3: BYU hasn't had to get exotic with blitzes and pressures
- 14:23Speaker 3: and stunts and things like that. So I don't think
- 14:27Speaker 3: this is a capability problem, but is it something that
- 14:32Speaker 3: has been talked about or addressed at BYU that they're
- 14:34Speaker 3: not pressuring the quarterback and sacking the quarterback in a
- 14:38Speaker 3: sort of ideal pace?
- 14:42Speaker 1: Speaker 2, Speaker 0 5, Speaker 0 6, Speaker 0 7,
- 14:43Speaker 1: Speaker 0 8, Speaker 0 9, Speaker 0 10, Speaker
- 14:44Speaker 1: 0 11, Speaker 0 12, Speaker 0 13, Speaker 0 14,
- 14:45Speaker 1: Speaker 0 15, Speaker 0 16, Speaker 0 17, Speaker
- 14:46Speaker 1: 0 18, Speaker 0 19, Speaker 0 20, Speaker 0 21,
- 14:48Speaker 1: Speaker 0 22, Speaker 0 23, Speaker 0 24, Speaker
- 14:49Speaker 1: 0 25, Speaker 0 26, Speaker 0 26, Speaker 0 27,
- 14:50Speaker 1: Speaker 0 28, Speaker 0 29, Speaker 0 30, Speaker
- 14:52Speaker 1: 0 31, Speaker 0 31, Speaker 0 31, Speaker 0 31,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Speaker 0 32, Speaker 0 32, Speaker 0 32, Speaker
- 14:54Speaker 1: 0 33, Speaker 0 33, Speaker 0 34, Speaker 0 34,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Speaker 0 35, Speaker 0 36, Speaker 0 36, Speaker
- 14:56Speaker 1: 0 37, Speaker 0 38, Speaker 0 39, Speaker 0 39,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Speaker 0 40, Speaker 0 41, Speaker 0 41, Speaker
- 14:58Speaker 1: 0 41, Speaker 0 42, Speaker 0 42, Speaker 0 42,
- 14:59Speaker 1: Speaker 0 42, Speaker 0 42, Speaker 0 43, Speaker
- 15:12Speaker 1: six times in three games. So not overly concerned about it.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Would love to have it, but honestly, there are certain
- 15:17Speaker 1: moments where BYU doesn't get a sack and that results
- 15:20Speaker 1: in an interception. And I would rather have that. And so, yes,
- 15:23Speaker 1: you would love to, you would love to add more
- 15:25Speaker 1: of those. No one's saying let's not get sacks, but
- 15:28Speaker 1: I don't know if it's as big a deal as,
- 15:30Speaker 1: as perhaps last in the conference makes it seem. Okay.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Jerem Jordan for a couple more minutes here on the
- 15:35Speaker 3: Sean O'Connell show talking BYU football as they come off
- 15:39Speaker 3: a bye and they'll go on the road to play
- 15:41Speaker 3: against a TCU Horned Frog team that looks a little
- 15:44Speaker 3: bit underwhelming, if we're being honest. And that brings us
- 15:48Speaker 3: to the point of the conversation, Jerem, where we try
- 15:50Speaker 3: to figure out the power structure of the Big 12 Conference.
- 15:53Speaker 3: We will do this every single week until we actually
- 15:55Speaker 3: know later in the year. Cincinnati has decided that they've
- 16:00Speaker 3: entered the chat again. West Virginia looked good and Oklahoma
- 16:04Speaker 3: State looked bad, but now Oklahoma State looks better than
- 16:08Speaker 3: West Virginia. We already talked about the TCU thing. BYU
- 16:13Speaker 3: looks like they're the best team in the conference. Utah
- 16:15Speaker 3: looks like they might be right behind them in a
- 16:17Speaker 3: conversation alongside Texas Tech.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Help me figure out the tiers of power.
- 16:25Speaker 1: I mean, metrically, yeah, it's, it's BYU and Utah. And
- 16:28Speaker 1: then Texas tech feels just a hair behind those two,
- 16:31Speaker 1: given that they are undefeated. They do have a ranked win.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I would argue that's the second best win of any
- 16:37Speaker 1: team in the league with the win over Houston, obviously
- 16:39Speaker 1: Oklahoma state over Oregon should be number one. So that
- 16:42Speaker 1: looks good. You know, BYU and Utah have looked great.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Utah has looked great. BYU has looked really good. Like
- 16:48Speaker 1: that Arizona win was, was a big one or early
- 16:51Speaker 1: on in conference play. So yeah, it's kind of that group.
- 16:53Speaker 1: And then You know, Oklahoma state or Houston, who do
- 16:56Speaker 1: you have it for? I personally have Oklahoma state at
- 16:59Speaker 1: four because of that Oregon win. I know Houston's right
- 17:01Speaker 1: there and they went toe to toe on the road
- 17:02Speaker 1: with Texas tech on a Friday. And then after that,
- 17:05Speaker 1: it gets really interesting, right? The kind of Arizona states
- 17:08Speaker 1: and Cincinnati's like to mention, and I would throw Arizona
- 17:12Speaker 1: there as well. Like West Virginia versus Oklahoma state was
- 17:15Speaker 1: a big one for the Which of you is really
- 17:18Speaker 1: the number one dark horse in the league kind of
- 17:20Speaker 1: game over the weekend and messed the maker and Hawkins
- 17:23Speaker 1: and young kind of showed how good they are. West
- 17:25Speaker 1: Virginia is interesting, man. They just, they ran the ball
- 17:27Speaker 1: 66 times in a game. They were down and they
- 17:30Speaker 1: were still running, which I'm like, wait, you're not going
- 17:32Speaker 1: to throw it. Michael Hawkins jr. Can run really well. Hey,
- 17:36Speaker 1: state surprised. at Cincinnati, which can be a tough place
- 17:46Speaker 1: to play, but that was weird. TCU has been underwhelming.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Kansas stinks, Colorado. I know they'd be Georgia tech, but
- 17:51Speaker 1: they stink. So yeah, it's, it's interesting. It's very Reese
- 17:55Speaker 1: Davis said, I don't know if it's deep as much
- 17:58Speaker 1: as it is wide, which is interesting to me. There's
- 18:01Speaker 1: kind of a big three Oklahoma state's teasing us. That
- 18:03Speaker 1: pulse of loss was weird. If they hadn't lost that,
- 18:06Speaker 1: we might be talking about them as the best team
- 18:08Speaker 1: in the league, but it's, it's going to be interesting.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And unfortunately, not everybody plays each other because the league's
- 18:15Speaker 1: just simply too big. We're in the expanded version of
- 18:18Speaker 1: all these leagues. Obviously BYU benefited from this to get
- 18:21Speaker 1: in a league like this, which is awesome. But it
- 18:24Speaker 1: just thinks that we don't have like, oh, we know
- 18:26Speaker 1: that everybody's playing each other. It's just not how it works. Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Well, it's actually, I had not put Oklahoma state into
- 18:33Speaker 3: this category. I talked about a lot in the off season,
- 18:37Speaker 3: how BYU and Utah missing Texas tech in the regular
- 18:41Speaker 3: season is, was either going to be good for the
- 18:43Speaker 3: big 12 conference or was going to be problematic for
- 18:45Speaker 3: the big 12 conference. BYU and Utah don't play Oklahoma
- 18:49Speaker 3: state either. So it's like, they got to play each other.
- 18:52Speaker 3: They got to play Houston, but Texas tech and Oklahoma state, if,
- 18:57Speaker 3: if the Cowboys are for real, and I guess we'll
- 19:00Speaker 3: figure it out as the season progresses, Oklahoma state does
- 19:04Speaker 3: have to play Houston.
- 19:05Speaker 2: They do have to play Texas tech. They don't have to.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Play BYU or Utah, I could see like a convoluted
- 19:12Speaker 3: tiebreaker scenario getting involved in a year like this. And
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't want that to be what decides our big
- 19:18Speaker 3: 12 championship.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I know, right? This is what happened with BYU two
- 19:22Speaker 1: years ago. There were seven and two and there was
- 19:24Speaker 1: a four way tie and BYU lost the tiebreaker. And
- 19:28Speaker 1: it just stinks. I could see more than two eight
- 19:32Speaker 1: and one teams in the league because of what you
- 19:34Speaker 1: were talking about. Not everyone's playing each other. There's kind
- 19:36Speaker 1: of like one and a half, maybe two big games
- 19:39Speaker 1: for kind of the top five teams in the league.
- 19:41Speaker 1: We don't have those head to heads. It's going to
- 19:44Speaker 1: help us figure this out. So nothing's more annoying than
- 19:47Speaker 1: looking at tiebreakers with two or three weeks to go
- 19:50Speaker 1: In fact, I found a website where you can manipulate
- 19:52Speaker 1: all the results. Okay, if this happens, this happens, who
- 19:55Speaker 1: gets a tiebreaker and why? Later in the year, if
- 19:58Speaker 1: it comes to that, I'll send it to you. But
- 20:00Speaker 1: it's super annoying to look at, and it hurts my
- 20:02Speaker 1: head as a kid from Copper Hills High School. I
- 20:04Speaker 1: was lucky to get into BYU, but thank goodness for
- 20:07Speaker 1: these websites. And November 7th, let's be honest, as of now,
- 20:11Speaker 1: things can change very quickly. It looks like that BYU,
- 20:14Speaker 1: Utah game is going to be massive for big 12
- 20:18Speaker 1: standings for who's getting to the title game. Who knows?
- 20:21Speaker 1: Maybe it'll even be rematched. They're called football, playoff implications,
- 20:25Speaker 1: auto bids that large, all kinds of things, man, that
- 20:29Speaker 1: game was going to be huge already for the pace.
- 20:32Speaker 1: These two teams are on of potentially if they're going great,
- 20:35Speaker 1: like the first, both are in the top 10 matchup
- 20:38Speaker 1: in the history of BYU and Utah that's never happened.
- 20:41Speaker 1: They have had a top kind of Top 20 matchup
- 20:44Speaker 1: in 08, if I recall. But, oh, my gosh, November
- 20:48Speaker 1: 7th looks huge right now.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I'm going to ask this question probably every week we
- 20:52Speaker 3: have you on because I think the answer and the
- 20:54Speaker 3: dynamics of the matchup could change. But given the conversation
- 20:59Speaker 3: we are just having right now where maybe that's who's
- 21:03Speaker 3: in the driver's seat to go to a Big 12
- 21:05Speaker 3: championship game when they play each other on November 7th,
- 21:08Speaker 3: If BYU fans could choose a win over Notre Dame
- 21:11Speaker 3: or a win over Utah, you can't have both.
- 21:14Speaker 2: What are they choosing?
- 21:16Speaker 1: First off, we can't have both and we'll try.
- 21:18Speaker 2: But in this hypothetical scenario.
- 21:27Speaker 1: When Utah was in the top 10. So we haven't
- 21:29Speaker 1: had a top 15 matchup even yet. All right. Okay.
- 21:31Speaker 1: It is Notre Dame by far because the cache of
- 21:35Speaker 1: that win would do more than win over Utah to
- 21:39Speaker 1: the committee. Well, hold on.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Hold on. I, yes, you're right.
- 21:45Speaker 3: However, if you lose to Utah and that makes you
- 21:51Speaker 3: lose an opportunity to get into the big 12 championship game,
- 21:54Speaker 3: and this is a one bid league, Then you have
- 21:56Speaker 3: this like foundational, incredible win over a top five team
- 22:01Speaker 3: in Notre Dame. It's a nationally relevant win. It launches
- 22:04Speaker 3: you potentially into the top five yourself. And then because
- 22:08Speaker 3: of all the stuff we just talked about, because of
- 22:10Speaker 3: the weird tiebreakers and whatnot, if Utah or anyone else
- 22:14Speaker 3: has that tiebreaker over BYU, so you have beat Notre Dame,
- 22:17Speaker 3: but then you're not in the Big 12 championship game.
- 22:20Speaker 3: I don't think anyone who's not in the Big 12
- 22:21Speaker 3: championship game is making a college football playoff.
- 22:24Speaker 1: So I, this question in a weird way in this
- 22:26Speaker 1: scenario though. Okay. Let's let's think about Miami last year.
- 22:31Speaker 1: This is what they did. They beat Notre Dame.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Do you really believe that?
- 22:36Speaker 3: Do you really believe that BYU would be traded, treated
- 22:40Speaker 3: the same way as Miami?
- 22:43Speaker 1: If Notre Dame is as good as we think they
- 22:45Speaker 1: could be. Yes. All right. Because if Notre Dame is
- 22:48Speaker 1: sitting there and they are top five, top 10 at
- 22:51Speaker 1: the end, and they have one blemish all year. That's
- 22:54Speaker 1: going to carry a lot of weight. And let's be honest,
- 22:57Speaker 1: BYU got punished for playing in the big 12 title
- 23:00Speaker 1: game that last year, they got crushed. If they had
- 23:03Speaker 1: not qualified and been sitting there somehow at 11 and one,
- 23:07Speaker 1: they probably would have been, they could have maybe been in, right?
- 23:11Speaker 1: Like who, who knows? But I think that that wind
- 23:13Speaker 1: would carry a lot of weight. And if you're telling
- 23:15Speaker 1: me in this scenario, that may be the only regular
- 23:17Speaker 1: season loss is Utah. Let's say BYU is 11 and one,
- 23:21Speaker 1: they'd be Notre Dame. They lose at Utah. Let's say
- 23:24Speaker 1: it's by 10. It's not a blowout. It's not a
- 23:26Speaker 1: one score game. we are losing the tiebreaker. I would
- 23:32Speaker 1: feel really confident that BYU would get into the playoff
- 23:35Speaker 1: in that scenario. You know why I would love me
- 23:37Speaker 1: there 10 and two. Now it's a different story, but
- 23:40Speaker 1: now you're talking about that. Seeing big 10 teams and
- 23:42Speaker 1: the strength of conference metric that they've introduced. Like, okay.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I would hope that that just, I just think that
- 23:47Speaker 1: that win that potential win, which it would be massive.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Notre Dame is really good. BYU is a double digit
- 23:52Speaker 1: dog at home in that game. Like that would mean
- 23:54Speaker 1: a lot. I think.
- 23:56Speaker 3: I hope that scenario plays out the way you just said,
- 23:59Speaker 3: because in that case, BYU fans would have to root
- 24:05Speaker 3: for Utah in a Big 12 championship game to make
- 24:08Speaker 3: it look like a more quality loss for BYU.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Listen, I'm here for BYU's aim today. And if that requires,
- 24:17Speaker 1: requires rooting for Utah in a big 12 title game
- 24:22Speaker 1: to get BYU into the college football lab, I'm fine
- 24:25Speaker 1: with that. Like I it's all good. How, how awesome
- 24:28Speaker 1: for the beehive state would that be? If both made
- 24:31Speaker 1: the playoff this year, it feels like it could, it
- 24:34Speaker 1: could happen this year. Like this is the best chance
- 24:36Speaker 1: ever because of BYU being in a power league, because,
- 24:40Speaker 1: you Both teams are looking great early in the season. Like, Hey,
- 24:44Speaker 1: this is, this is fun. We got a fun ball
- 24:46Speaker 1: going on in the state right now.
- 24:47Speaker 3: I want to make sure I put out a disclaimer
- 24:49Speaker 3: that I fully acknowledge that we are putting the cart way,
- 24:53Speaker 3: way ahead of the horse on all these discussions because you.
- 24:56Speaker 2: Got to let it play out.
- 24:57Speaker 3: But yeah, fun stuff because that November 7th game does
- 25:02Speaker 3: look massive and there's a plenty of work to be
- 25:04Speaker 3: done between now and then TCU for BYU this week, Utah,
- 25:09Speaker 3: of course, sitting on a buy, and then they'll host Kansas.
- 25:13Speaker 3: And it's at Colorado, Houston, at Cincinnati, who may or
- 25:17Speaker 3: may not be ranked by then. We'll see what Cincinnati
- 25:20Speaker 3: looks like. So crazy stuff happening in the world of
- 25:23Speaker 3: college football. Jerem, enjoy the game this weekend. I always
- 25:28Speaker 3: appreciate you jumping on with us.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Hey, I appreciate it. And hey, let's enjoy it while
- 25:32Speaker 1: it goes. You can't just wait till the end to
- 25:34Speaker 1: be happy about stuff. Enjoy the journey here. So far,
- 25:37Speaker 1: so good.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Exactly right. It's a lot of fun to watch.
