- 0:59Speaker 2: All right, guys, welcome back another edition E y L.
- 1:03Speaker 2: This is the Legend series. Always like these type of
- 1:06Speaker 2: episodes when we interview O g's in the game, whether
- 1:09Speaker 2: it's Chris Gotti, whether it's Kenny Burns, whether it's Jason Jeter,
- 1:15Speaker 2: They're always good stories and just a ton of gems
- 1:17Speaker 2: and information. So this is right along the lines of that.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Sean Press, a legend in his own right, started as
- 1:24Speaker 2: an intern in the music business for for Diddy and
- 1:26Speaker 2: then became his role manager, then became the vice president
- 1:29Speaker 2: of bad Boy. Then he actually created a company called
- 1:33Speaker 2: Power Moves, Inc. Which is a major marketing firm New
- 1:38Speaker 2: York dj icon, which led to him actually creating what
- 1:41Speaker 2: they call the Grammys for DJ's the Global Spin Awards.
- 1:44Speaker 2: It's a big deal, and a variety of other things.
- 1:47Speaker 3: So we forgot So what's that South Bronx.
- 1:51Speaker 4: We can't forget that? Shout out to the South Bronx,
- 1:56Speaker 4: South South.
- 1:57Speaker 3: The Homer hip hop, That's right.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So yeah, this is gonna be a you know, entertaining
- 2:02Speaker 2: conversation and educational conversation, light in conversation. I'm looking forward
- 2:05Speaker 2: to it. So, first and foremost, thank you for joining us.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 2:09Speaker 5: First and foremost, thank y'all for having me. Like, why
- 2:13Speaker 5: am like this is? Can I take over notice? This
- 2:20Speaker 5: is to become a freaking destination, Like like I got
- 2:25Speaker 5: the call, I'm like making sure that my head's cut,
- 2:29Speaker 5: what I'm gonna wear to day? Am I smelling right
- 2:32Speaker 5: like this this thing that y'all have created, just no,
- 2:36Speaker 5: it is really impacted. And now it's one of them
- 2:39Speaker 5: things like you feel like you arrived if you get
- 2:43Speaker 5: the call to be.
- 2:45Speaker 3: So thank y'all for having me. Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 2:48Speaker 4: So it's crazy that you said that because when we
- 2:50Speaker 4: initially started and I kind of met it to you earlier.
- 2:53Speaker 4: One of our first episodes, like episode nineteen Derrek Ferguson, Dude,
- 2:57Speaker 4: I went to church Region who obviously was that bad
- 2:58Speaker 4: boy to us a lot of things on the episode
- 3:01Speaker 4: was an amazing episode, but he was like, you know,
- 3:02Speaker 4: I'm gonna help y'all get some people.
- 3:04Speaker 3: He's like, you know, you need to start with showan press.
- 3:07Speaker 3: I'm like, all right, Derek, let's set it up. Shout
- 3:09Speaker 3: out to d that was a year and a half ago.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I'm happy that. I mean, it's finally come to fruition.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Don't be late than never as a fact, So let's
- 3:18Speaker 2: let's let's jump into it, all right.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Music.
- 3:21Speaker 2: You know, if anybody watches Eyo, you know that me
- 3:23Speaker 2: and troya hip hop babies. We grew up on music,
- 3:26Speaker 2: so we always like to have these conversations, and to me,
- 3:28Speaker 2: it's always interested to hit the backstory. So you started
- 3:31Speaker 2: as an intern for bad Boy and works your way
- 3:34Speaker 2: up to the vice president. At the time when bad Boy,
- 3:37Speaker 2: like when we interview styles, he said like bad Boy
- 3:40Speaker 2: was like the Chicago Bulls, ninety six Chicago Bulls. So
- 3:42Speaker 2: if anybody that's young, they might not realize how strong
- 3:45Speaker 2: the bad Boy was, but that was like probably the
- 3:48Speaker 2: strongest movement ever in hip hop history during that timeframe.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So how did how how did your journey go from
- 3:55Speaker 2: being an intern to being, you know, one of the
- 3:58Speaker 2: top people in the chain of come in.
- 4:01Speaker 5: You know, I gotta go back a little further if
- 4:04Speaker 5: you don't mind. I took five internships, you know. Bad
- 4:10Speaker 5: Boy was my fifth, and I was trying my best,
- 4:15Speaker 5: my hardest. I was doing everything I knew how to
- 4:17Speaker 5: do to get into the music industry, and year over year,
- 4:22Speaker 5: and this is before labor laws, Like you could work
- 4:26Speaker 5: for free back then, and the labels didn't have to
- 4:28Speaker 5: pay you nothing.
- 4:29Speaker 3: They didn't have to give you coffee, they didn't have
- 4:30Speaker 3: to give you lunch money. You ain't have to be
- 4:32Speaker 3: in school and get credit.
- 4:34Speaker 5: So I was trying my best to get in the
- 4:36Speaker 5: game for years, and I would do a year at
- 4:41Speaker 5: Arista and be like, can I get a job, Like,
- 4:45Speaker 5: we're not hiring.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I just gave you a year free labor. You know.
- 4:49Speaker 5: I went to Atlantic, I went to every label I
- 4:53Speaker 5: can get to, and when I got to Bad Boy,
- 4:55Speaker 5: and the reason I want to go back, and I
- 4:56Speaker 5: think it's necessary because I didn't just up the chain,
- 5:02Speaker 5: you know, from by the time I got to Bad Boy,
- 5:05Speaker 5: I was an uncaged savage, like they had kept me
- 5:09Speaker 5: in a cage for six years trying to get in
- 5:12Speaker 5: this game. So by the time I got the bad Boy,
- 5:15Speaker 5: what I thought was, you know, the world working against
- 5:20Speaker 5: me because I couldn't get a job to save my
- 5:22Speaker 5: life in the music industry. It actually turned out to
- 5:25Speaker 5: be the biggest blessing in my life because I came
- 5:28Speaker 5: in as an intern, but I was so experienced from
- 5:32Speaker 5: all of them years of working and not getting paid,
- 5:35Speaker 5: and I was so hungry. I came in with a
- 5:38Speaker 5: different kind of aggression and all the other interns it
- 5:42Speaker 5: was like word like serious, and that's the way I
- 5:47Speaker 5: felt about everybody in that label. Like I would look
- 5:50Speaker 5: at the coordinators, the directors, you know, I was looking
- 5:53Speaker 5: at it, and I was like, yo, y'all are I mean,
- 5:56Speaker 5: I'm happy to be here, but y'all work ethic?
- 5:59Speaker 2: How old were you in when I started in terning
- 6:02Speaker 2: where I get the bad bad Boy?
- 6:03Speaker 3: When you get the Bad Boy about twenty three?
- 6:05Speaker 4: So what's the time frame in bad Boy? We are
- 6:08Speaker 4: we right before ready to die? Or we in the
- 6:10Speaker 4: mix already?
- 6:11Speaker 3: We are right after ready to die drop like right after.
- 6:16Speaker 2: N That's so let me ask you this perfect time
- 6:18Speaker 2: twenty three? How old was Puff twenty one? Twenty two?
- 6:21Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, Puff's older than me. Puff got
- 6:23Speaker 3: me for about two years to like twenty five. How
- 6:26Speaker 3: was that?
- 6:27Speaker 2: How was that to be a twenty three year old
- 6:28Speaker 2: intern for a twenty five year old ceo?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Like?
- 6:31Speaker 2: How was that experience? Because usually it doesn't work like that,
- 6:34Speaker 2: usually in corporated like your bosses like sixty years old,
- 6:38Speaker 2: fifty years old, twenty five year old Puff?
- 6:40Speaker 3: Like that? We can only imagine.
- 6:44Speaker 5: I can tell you first and foremost. Long before I
- 6:48Speaker 5: got to Bad Boy, you know, I was working and
- 6:50Speaker 5: trying to get in the industry. Puff was that dude
- 6:53Speaker 5: in the city. Like, Let's let's be clear, Like Puff
- 6:57Speaker 5: was throwing parties. He was throwing parties. Yeah, he had
- 7:00Speaker 5: the red zone like Puff had all types of stuff
- 7:02Speaker 5: going on. He had just come off Mary J. Blige
- 7:06Speaker 5: first album. He really changed the world of R and
- 7:10Speaker 5: B because before Puff, R and B looked like the
- 7:14Speaker 5: OJ's and it looked like they was doing choreographed steps
- 7:19Speaker 5: and spinning and all that stuff. Yeah, but he bought
- 7:24Speaker 5: a whole differ, Like he put Mary Queen and hip
- 7:26Speaker 5: hop soul in a baseball catch like yo to see.
- 7:29Speaker 5: He had them looking like rappers. So you know, he
- 7:34Speaker 5: was working for twenty five year old ceo. It was
- 7:38Speaker 5: dope because you could relate to him number one. But
- 7:43Speaker 5: Puff is and I love to get and y'all got
- 7:47Speaker 5: a big platform, so I'm gonna do this, you know
- 7:50Speaker 5: where I know he can get his flowers. Puff was different,
- 7:54Speaker 5: like like I know everybody say they work hard. I
- 7:57Speaker 5: know everybody screamed, yo, you gotta be up early and
- 8:01Speaker 5: you know, work late. I'm a hard worker, I am aggressive,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I'm a beast. But it ain't never one day in
- 8:10Speaker 5: my life working next to that man that I thought
- 8:13Speaker 5: I out worked him. So working for a twenty five
- 8:16Speaker 5: year old CEO was aspirational. I got to look.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And learn from.
- 8:24Speaker 2: The best hands on so without without a doubt. Yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 2: I heard I heard Puffed on Sleep.
- 8:29Speaker 5: I heard that now, like I gave him his credit,
- 8:34Speaker 5: but I call puff now even sleep California time.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:40Speaker 2: Maybe that's what it is, so so so moving, moving,
- 8:43Speaker 2: moving through the ranks and bad boy as far as
- 8:46Speaker 2: on the music side and working your way up to
- 8:49Speaker 2: be the vice president. What does that entail like to
- 8:51Speaker 2: be a vice president of a label? What's your responsibility?
- 8:54Speaker 2: Are you A and R and projects? Are you marketing?
- 8:56Speaker 3: Every I was.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Actually I was actually vice president promotion to be specific,
- 9:01Speaker 5: and that is really you you For me, I started
- 9:05Speaker 5: out intern working on the street team, work my way
- 9:09Speaker 5: up from coordinator, running the national street team, running.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Mix your radio, all of.
- 9:16Speaker 5: That stuff, and then you start to get into real radio,
- 9:18Speaker 5: so that that it's how do I say it, it's
- 9:24Speaker 5: it's dope because if you're young and you're living the lifestyle,
- 9:29Speaker 5: who don't want to be in the music industry? And
- 9:31Speaker 5: then I had a front row seat, like I was
- 9:37Speaker 5: in the hottest label at the hottest time ever in
- 9:42Speaker 5: the game. So for me, you didn't have to be
- 9:44Speaker 5: a rapper. You you could be, you know, the guy
- 9:48Speaker 5: next to the god, next to the god, next to
- 9:50Speaker 5: the rapper the streets.
- 9:51Speaker 4: So I mean, I'm listening to you now, and I'm like, yo,
- 9:53Speaker 4: I know I saw the title like Puff called you
- 9:55Speaker 4: the ambassador of the streets, absolutely because like you was
- 9:58Speaker 4: literally out there. But the streets even had some legends
- 10:00Speaker 4: in it too.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Oh without a debt. But see this is I would
- 10:04Speaker 5: love to share this with your audience. I don't care
- 10:06Speaker 5: where you get in. I didn't like I went to college.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I didn't.
- 10:10Speaker 5: I didn't go to college to be on nobody's street team.
- 10:14Speaker 5: But that's the way I had to get in. And
- 10:18Speaker 5: for me, getting in was I'll pick up the garbage.
- 10:22Speaker 5: Like you want the garbage picked up, like, I'll do that.
- 10:25Speaker 5: You want the taller bowls clean, I'll do that. I
- 10:28Speaker 5: came to the label, they was like, yo, all we
- 10:30Speaker 5: need right now, we're not hiring. I wanted to be
- 10:33Speaker 5: an A and R. I didn't want to be even in promotion.
- 10:37Speaker 5: They were the people on the street team and that
- 10:39Speaker 5: was my way in. And I was like, yo, okay,
- 10:44Speaker 5: I'm not happy about this, but I'm about to raise
- 10:47Speaker 5: the ball.
- 10:47Speaker 3: In a way y'all never seen before me.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Let me ask you this, because there's a lot of
- 10:51Speaker 2: young people might not even know what the street team
- 10:52Speaker 2: is because there's no street team more. But can you
- 10:56Speaker 2: just even explain, like, because to me, Bad Boy had
- 10:59Speaker 2: an extremely strong street team. Rough I is something I've
- 11:02Speaker 2: never seen before.
- 11:03Speaker 5: No no, no, no, watch your mouth, watch your mouth.
- 11:07Speaker 5: Bad Boy had these and I'm looking at the Bad
- 11:09Speaker 5: Boy had the number one street team. Everybody out there
- 11:13Speaker 5: ask them. Was fighting for second place. It was just
- 11:16Speaker 5: was a given number.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Had the banners, you had the sticks with the Bad
- 11:19Speaker 4: Boy joint, you had the.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Flags running out. We were the most creative, We were
- 11:24Speaker 3: the most aggressive.
- 11:25Speaker 5: Shout out to June Balloon, Shout out to Shannon the Butcher,
- 11:28Speaker 5: Shout out to so many of the guys who you
- 11:30Speaker 5: know keeping came before me and laid down the pavement
- 11:33Speaker 5: that that we could really do what we did. But
- 11:36Speaker 5: that Bad Boys street team, you know, that was legendary.
- 11:40Speaker 5: And then when I came in and really took it
- 11:43Speaker 5: over my man room like like Puff.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Called me the ambassador of the streets.
- 11:47Speaker 5: But I couldn't do nothing with that, with that, without
- 11:49Speaker 5: that army of savages, let by my man Room and
- 11:53Speaker 5: all of those guys.
- 11:54Speaker 3: So now it was all right.
- 11:56Speaker 2: So the street Team is a real street like a
- 11:58Speaker 2: bunch of people that's putting up flyers, that's going to club,
- 12:02Speaker 2: that's handing out T shirts, that's doing all of this, right,
- 12:04Speaker 2: So are these people getting paid or yeah, these people
- 12:06Speaker 2: are getting paid. They getting paid. So how many people
- 12:09Speaker 2: was actually on the street team?
- 12:11Speaker 5: Okay, so a great question. It depends. Like when I
- 12:14Speaker 5: came in, I was charged with taking what we were
- 12:18Speaker 5: doing in New York and replicating it nationwide. So I
- 12:23Speaker 5: wanted to go and find you know, people might not
- 12:27Speaker 5: know what street teams are. Street teams are the equivalent
- 12:31Speaker 5: of today's influences. These are the people who other people
- 12:35Speaker 5: look to for what's hot, what's next. These are the
- 12:39Speaker 5: people who have their finger on the posts of what's
- 12:42Speaker 5: coming up. It might not be hot today, but check
- 12:44Speaker 5: it out in six months from now. You're gonna be
- 12:46Speaker 5: hearing about this artist, or this is gonna be something
- 12:49Speaker 5: that you're gonna want to bodies are gonna be sneakers
- 12:51Speaker 5: that you want to wear. That's what the Street Team
- 12:54Speaker 5: really are. So I would go down to town, market
- 12:57Speaker 5: to market and we would just try to pick out
- 13:00Speaker 5: some of the of the craziest street influences. So it
- 13:03Speaker 5: might be that girl who got the biggest mouth, you
- 13:07Speaker 5: know what I'm saying, Like in her school, everybody's looking
- 13:11Speaker 5: at her for the gossip, but she has a constituency
- 13:16Speaker 5: by herself.
- 13:16Speaker 3: Everybody looked at her.
- 13:18Speaker 5: It might be that guy who's the you know, he
- 13:20Speaker 5: always got the fresh new Jayson. He's always the one
- 13:24Speaker 5: who's wearing the new clothes.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Yo. You need to be down with us.
- 13:27Speaker 5: And we took them and took what they naturally do
- 13:31Speaker 5: and just laser focused them on our mission in our records.
- 13:35Speaker 4: Y'all doing that from city to city. Because now I'm looking,
- 13:38Speaker 4: I'm like, Yo, damn, y'all did that with the music.
- 13:40Speaker 4: But they also did that because it sounds like the
- 13:41Speaker 4: boys the same thing.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Next door. He told us that same story.
- 13:45Speaker 4: So while the Street team is doing that, are you
- 13:48Speaker 4: hands on now with the artists or you the guy
- 13:50Speaker 4: that's like, Yo, this is the record you're going up
- 13:52Speaker 4: to radio.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You're the guy that's you.
- 13:54Speaker 5: I'm the guy, but you know, and here's where I
- 13:56Speaker 5: got to shout out hard Pierre. You know funny, because
- 14:00Speaker 5: I told y'all I wanted to be a A and
- 14:03Speaker 5: R when I got in the game. And sometimes you
- 14:08Speaker 5: look for what's shiny, you look for what's hot. The
- 14:11Speaker 5: A and R is one of the most coveted positions
- 14:14Speaker 5: in the music industry right everybody wants to be an
- 14:17Speaker 5: A and R. But the more I got deeper into
- 14:20Speaker 5: the game, I learned things about myself.
- 14:24Speaker 3: I don't like the studio.
- 14:26Speaker 5: I don't like being in a confined space, people smoking,
- 14:30Speaker 5: because the artists are always smoking and they need to
- 14:33Speaker 5: get that creative juices going and music is blasting, and
- 14:36Speaker 5: you hearing the same record fifty million times. For me,
- 14:39Speaker 5: I was like, I know, I wish for that, but
- 14:42Speaker 5: thank god I didn't get it, because I would have
- 14:44Speaker 5: been the worse an R because I just didn't.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Even want to be around.
- 14:47Speaker 5: So I always when the records was done, I would
- 14:51Speaker 5: go to the studio, but I wanted to hear it
- 14:54Speaker 5: like a fan. Give me this when it's a finished product.
- 14:58Speaker 5: Let me drive up up and down the West Side
- 15:00Speaker 5: Highway on my way back and forth and listen.
- 15:05Speaker 3: To this like I'm a fan.
- 15:06Speaker 5: And then yes, I would come into the office and
- 15:08Speaker 5: be like, this is all record, this is the one
- 15:11Speaker 5: trust me when I tell you, and I'm the kind
- 15:14Speaker 5: of person you know, I put my nuts on the line,
- 15:17Speaker 5: like like if I say this is it, consider it broke?
- 15:20Speaker 5: Like like hold me account?
- 15:22Speaker 4: How many you must have heard a bunch of them?
- 15:24Speaker 4: Like that's the one like every weekend.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Again, shout the hall, shout the puff. They made my
- 15:30Speaker 3: job easy me.
- 15:32Speaker 2: I got a couple of questions. So the first question
- 15:34Speaker 2: is for radio, right, because I watched the Breakfast Club
- 15:38Speaker 2: interview and you were saying that you went to radio
- 15:40Speaker 2: with Black Rob. I think that's when your first met Charlomagne.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So like, what's the process to break somebody's record on radio?
- 15:49Speaker 2: Like how do you how does because you always hear
- 15:52Speaker 2: like you know, they pushing it to the DJs and
- 15:56Speaker 2: you got to talk to the director of program directors
- 15:58Speaker 2: and all that, Like what's the process for that?
- 16:01Speaker 5: That's a great question. You know, it is a little
- 16:05Speaker 5: different now, but it's somewhat the same. Nobody today wants
- 16:12Speaker 5: to put in the work, and everybody wanted to be
- 16:14Speaker 5: in the music industry. Everybody want to blow, but nobody
- 16:17Speaker 5: want to put in the work.
- 16:18Speaker 3: And here's what I mean by that.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Back when we was coming up, I look around, and
- 16:25Speaker 5: I applored y'all.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Y'all got Life after Death on one side.
- 16:28Speaker 5: You got the blueprint on the other sides. But you
- 16:31Speaker 5: got it as wax. So we get it, y'all. Y'all know,
- 16:34Speaker 5: y'all hip hop, right. It used to cost a lot
- 16:38Speaker 5: of money to put records on wax and if you
- 16:42Speaker 5: was willing to invest your money in studio, real studio,
- 16:46Speaker 5: Like now it's cheap. You can do it from home.
- 16:48Speaker 5: You can go in your bathroom and make a hit record.
- 16:52Speaker 5: You don't have the same value as if you spent
- 16:56Speaker 5: real money. Like back in those days you had to
- 16:59Speaker 5: go to the studio. You was getting two hours. It
- 17:01Speaker 5: was no sitting around chilling. I gotta go in there
- 17:03Speaker 5: and I gotta knock this out. So when you came
- 17:06Speaker 5: out of it and you finally had your wax or
- 17:08Speaker 5: you finally had your CD or whatever, you had to
- 17:11Speaker 5: hit the ground and you had to really work the streets,
- 17:14Speaker 5: work the streets. And that's the part, like go club
- 17:16Speaker 5: the club, DJ to DJ sit and a DJ's in
- 17:20Speaker 5: a booth and you're begging them and you're pleading with him,
- 17:23Speaker 5: like look, please play my record, and they're like yeah, yeah, yeah, next,
- 17:27Speaker 5: it's coming on next.
- 17:29Speaker 3: You hear that for three hours straight.
- 17:33Speaker 5: That type of work still works today, but people are
- 17:38Speaker 5: not getting up and they're not going and they're.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Not harassing the DJs the way that we used to.
- 17:45Speaker 5: They're not knocking like I mean, you can ask any
- 17:49Speaker 5: anybody when it comes to me, like if you if
- 17:52Speaker 5: I wasn't on your phone when you went to the clubs,
- 17:56Speaker 5: I was there sitting at the DJ booth like, look,
- 17:59Speaker 5: you know, I got to y'all get my record on.
- 18:01Speaker 5: And then the DJs one of two things happen. They
- 18:05Speaker 5: either start to respect your grind or they like, let
- 18:09Speaker 5: me play this person's record because I know he ain't
- 18:11Speaker 5: going nowhere, so let me give you this spin. But
- 18:14Speaker 5: in that you start to develop real relationships. So when
- 18:18Speaker 5: it comes time to get your record on the radio,
- 18:21Speaker 5: what clues to you harassing them in the clubs? Now
- 18:24Speaker 5: we got a real relationship. You know, flex is used
- 18:27Speaker 5: to you harassing them. Now we got a real relationship.
- 18:30Speaker 5: And then it's just a phone call.
- 18:32Speaker 2: But do they really have liked DJs really have power?
- 18:36Speaker 2: Because I was told like they just get told what
- 18:38Speaker 2: to play from the program director, which comes from the
- 18:39Speaker 2: top up, and they don't really have the power to
- 18:41Speaker 2: actually play what they what they really might want to play.
- 18:44Speaker 3: That's an excellent question. It really is.
- 18:46Speaker 5: Back in the days, they did have way more power
- 18:49Speaker 5: than they have now. But everything is not playlisted. So
- 18:53Speaker 5: let's just say a DJ has a one hour mixed
- 18:58Speaker 5: show slot, maybe forty minutes of that is playlisted, and
- 19:05Speaker 5: then your program director will let you just get busy,
- 19:07Speaker 5: just so long as you're not playing crazy records and
- 19:11Speaker 5: you can sandwich a new record in between two hits.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Yeah, DJ self broke a lot of He's broken a
- 19:18Speaker 2: lot of people out the self.
- 19:19Speaker 3: They will definitely shout out to self, what's your thoughts
- 19:21Speaker 3: on the role that you used to have now?
- 19:24Speaker 4: Right where artists can almost break their own records, right
- 19:27Speaker 4: like if they just get on SoundCloud or they get
- 19:29Speaker 4: on YouTube.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Like, what do you think the role now is?
- 19:33Speaker 5: What does it look like in terms of breaking your
- 19:35Speaker 5: own record or trying to break a record for an
- 19:37Speaker 5: artists when I mean technically you know what I mean,
- 19:39Speaker 5: Like most of them are trying to break that, especially
- 19:41Speaker 5: in New York.
- 19:41Speaker 2: It's like, so you're saying they don't need somebody to
- 19:43Speaker 2: break their record for them, they break their own records.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, Like the role of
- 19:46Speaker 4: the and all the role of the VP of promotions,
- 19:49Speaker 4: is it kind of diminished now in a sense?
- 19:51Speaker 5: No. No, Like at the end of the day, radio
- 19:56Speaker 5: is still viable.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I don't you know. You have all these streaming plays
- 20:00Speaker 3: platforms and.
- 20:02Speaker 5: Artists now can eat long before the world knows them
- 20:05Speaker 5: because they get paid royalties every time their records are streamed.
- 20:10Speaker 5: But you don't become an a list star until radio
- 20:15Speaker 5: starts to bang it, until radio puts you in rotation.
- 20:19Speaker 5: So radio is still uh, if you want to be
- 20:22Speaker 5: a celebrity, if you want to be that guy, radio
- 20:25Speaker 5: is still very important for you. But you can do
- 20:30Speaker 5: this yourself now, but you got to put in the work.
- 20:33Speaker 5: And I think that because everybody has access to uploading
- 20:37Speaker 5: their records to you know, Spotify or iTunes, it's made
- 20:43Speaker 5: the process so easy that people just now they think, oh,
- 20:47Speaker 5: I push a few buttons and it's going to react,
- 20:50Speaker 5: and they don't do the work.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It's a crowded space.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Crowd It's different now too, because I feel like there's
- 20:56Speaker 2: so many different lanes. Like you're right, because I still
- 20:59Speaker 2: listen to radio and in my car. I'm not one
- 21:02Speaker 2: of the people that listening to Spotify, but I know,
- 21:04Speaker 2: like NBA Young Boy, I've never heard his song on
- 21:06Speaker 2: the radio, but he's the biggest artist on YouTube. And
- 21:09Speaker 2: there's a bunch of people that I've never heard on
- 21:11Speaker 2: the radio, but they run up crazy numbers on Spotify.
- 21:14Speaker 2: So I feel like there are different lanes. But yeah,
- 21:17Speaker 2: I agree with you that radio is not dead, even
- 21:21Speaker 2: though you know, I just think that it may not
- 21:23Speaker 2: be as vital as it once was.
- 21:26Speaker 5: Because they were the only show in town. It was like,
- 21:29Speaker 5: if you wanted to blow, you had to get on radio.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Now it's option. Yeah, you know, but again, you know,
- 21:34Speaker 5: and our underline, if you want to become a mainstream superstar,
- 21:43Speaker 5: you still need radio.
- 21:45Speaker 4: So at the point when you're I mean, you're putting
- 21:47Speaker 4: out hits after hits after hits, right, and I'm hearing
- 21:50Speaker 4: it what you're saying, Right, you didn't like to be
- 21:52Speaker 4: in the studio, you didn't like to be around the smoke.
- 21:55Speaker 4: You just wanted to get the finished product. At what
- 21:58Speaker 4: point are you saying to yourself like this isn't for me,
- 22:00Speaker 4: I need to do something else.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Oh that's you speak in my language. It's a good question.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I think it's a teaching moment for people. You know,
- 22:09Speaker 5: It's funny because I try to always stay tapped in
- 22:15Speaker 5: to God and I'm very I'm very, very open about
- 22:19Speaker 5: you know, really my relationship with God, and God has
- 22:23Speaker 5: us on this journey, and sometimes you can think that
- 22:26Speaker 5: that the path you're on is going to be the
- 22:29Speaker 5: path that you know, I'm going to the Promised Land
- 22:33Speaker 5: in this lane and at the peak you know of Well, no,
- 22:37Speaker 5: I'm not gonna say. Because we had major, major success
- 22:41Speaker 5: in the late nineties early two thousands, then bad Boys
- 22:43Speaker 5: started to fall off, and then you know, Black Row
- 22:47Speaker 5: put the label on his back and you know, brought
- 22:50Speaker 5: us back, and shine came and all of those great
- 22:53Speaker 5: artists called Thomas so Forth and so on. But somewhere
- 22:56Speaker 5: in the middle of that, I a realization hit me.
- 23:03Speaker 5: I'm traveling and it's something that you know, we haven't
- 23:07Speaker 5: talked about, but I was. At the same time that
- 23:09Speaker 5: I'm doing all the promotions, I'm part of Puff's management team,
- 23:14Speaker 5: so I'm literally his tour manager and road manager. So
- 23:20Speaker 5: I'm traveling the world. I'm on planes, trains, and automobiles
- 23:26Speaker 5: and a realization starts to hit me, like, yo, you
- 23:30Speaker 5: eating steak tonight and you staying at you know, the
- 23:34Speaker 5: four seasons. But this is his legacy. It ain't yours
- 23:42Speaker 5: like I'm getting a check.
- 23:45Speaker 3: But what we were building.
- 23:50Speaker 5: With saying bad boy like like right now this we're
- 23:54Speaker 5: talking about his legacy.
- 23:57Speaker 3: And I had to.
- 24:00Speaker 5: Come to terms with myself that as a man, I
- 24:04Speaker 5: wanted to build my legacy. And I started to you know,
- 24:09Speaker 5: it's crazy because as God is putting this in my heart,
- 24:13Speaker 5: I'm fighting it because I'm like, yo, I work my
- 24:16Speaker 5: whole life for this, like you kidding me? But sometimes
- 24:20Speaker 5: you just gotta trust your intuition. You gotta trust that
- 24:25Speaker 5: in a voice. And it took me a couple of
- 24:27Speaker 5: years of really fighting it before I decided it was
- 24:30Speaker 5: time for me to put my resignation in.
- 24:33Speaker 2: But even when you put your resignation in, there was
- 24:35Speaker 2: a story with that, Yeah, he would he wouldn't let you leave,
- 24:37Speaker 2: right that go okay?
- 24:39Speaker 5: Like like again, I'm gonna give my man Puffin's flowers
- 24:43Speaker 5: while while he's still alive and you can still smell him.
- 24:45Speaker 3: But I feel like I'm giving a way too much.
- 24:47Speaker 3: Like here's the deal.
- 24:49Speaker 5: I you know, these are those moments that people need
- 24:54Speaker 5: to really listen to because I hope it helps you
- 25:00Speaker 5: in your journey. We down in Miami. I'm staying at
- 25:04Speaker 5: the Mandarin Orient to a hotel. I have a terrible memory,
- 25:07Speaker 5: but I remember this like it was yesterday. It's Memorial
- 25:11Speaker 5: Day weekend. Maybe it's zero four five somewhere in there. Yes,
- 25:21Speaker 5: it was wild and everybody's having a ball, you know.
- 25:27Speaker 5: But I was in a deep depression because that voice,
- 25:31Speaker 5: that thing that Oprah refers to as a whisper, I
- 25:34Speaker 5: started to hear that a few years earlier, and by
- 25:37Speaker 5: the time that I got to Miami Beach, now it
- 25:41Speaker 5: wasn't a whisper.
- 25:42Speaker 3: It was a punch in my face.
- 25:43Speaker 5: It was boom, like like I was in my hotel
- 25:46Speaker 5: room and I woke up and I was supposed to
- 25:48Speaker 5: be out working that morning. I couldn't leave my room,
- 25:52Speaker 5: and I was depressed. I was confused, and I did
- 25:57Speaker 5: what I always do. I dropped to my knees. And
- 26:00Speaker 5: when I draw to my knees, I promise y'all on
- 26:03Speaker 5: everything I love. I heard God's voice, just like I'm
- 26:08Speaker 5: hearing y'all's voices. And God said it's time to go,
- 26:12Speaker 5: simple as that, it's time to go. And that was
- 26:16Speaker 5: the first time that I listened. I had been hearing it,
- 26:19Speaker 5: I had been feeling it, but then it was just
- 26:22Speaker 5: a voice and it was time to go. And we
- 26:24Speaker 5: did Memorial Day weekend. We killed it out there. Bad
- 26:27Speaker 5: boy was crazy in the streets. And when I got
- 26:29Speaker 5: back that Tuesday, I handed in my resignation. Right, so,
- 26:35Speaker 5: if you know Puff Puff, and I say this as
- 26:38Speaker 5: politely as I know how to, but Puff is like
- 26:40Speaker 5: a jealous girl, like he's he's not a dude who
- 26:44Speaker 5: you know you really want to break up with it
- 26:46Speaker 5: like puffa with the pressure on you all that. So
- 26:50Speaker 5: I went and I handed in my resignation and I
- 26:52Speaker 5: gave it to h y'all, and I was like, yo,
- 26:55Speaker 5: you know, I got two weeks, and for those two weeks,
- 26:59Speaker 5: I did everything in my power not to see this guy.
- 27:03Speaker 5: So if I knew he was coming in the building,
- 27:04Speaker 5: I was slipping out the back door like like, I
- 27:07Speaker 5: was not staying around this guy at all. And on
- 27:10Speaker 5: the twelfth day, I get a call from Hyall like
- 27:13Speaker 5: Puff want to see you, and I'm like.
- 27:15Speaker 3: He's here.
- 27:18Speaker 5: He was like, like I don't know if y'all ever
- 27:20Speaker 5: seen the movie The Green Mound, but the dude is
- 27:23Speaker 5: on death row and you know he's taking that final walk.
- 27:26Speaker 5: That's how I felt going to Puff's office because I
- 27:29Speaker 5: just knew I didn't want to look him in his face,
- 27:31Speaker 5: like like like I said, I took five internships. He
- 27:35Speaker 5: gave me a job, and I remember going to that
- 27:38Speaker 5: office and I got the nervous smile on him. I'm
- 27:41Speaker 5: looking and I'm sitting at this side of the table
- 27:43Speaker 5: and Puff is at that side, and this is how
- 27:45Speaker 5: he was. He was like like he tilted his head
- 27:52Speaker 5: when he's thinking, like he's trying to figure out what
- 27:54Speaker 5: he's gonna say, and he was like, yo, playboy, like
- 27:58Speaker 5: like I this and that's how you like, like I
- 28:00Speaker 5: did something to you, like you're not happy here, I'm
- 28:02Speaker 5: not paying you. And I had to go through my
- 28:05Speaker 5: whole spiel like Puff, it ain't you, like the whole
- 28:08Speaker 5: breakup with the girl, like it ain't you with me?
- 28:14Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I went through the old thing like yo,
- 28:15Speaker 3: it ain't chewish me.
- 28:17Speaker 5: And I told him like like my big dreams and
- 28:19Speaker 5: my plans, like you know, I want to build my
- 28:22Speaker 5: own and I want to start my own legacy. And
- 28:26Speaker 5: it was in that moment, and that's why I say
- 28:28Speaker 5: you have to you gotta listen when when when, when
- 28:32Speaker 5: God is speaking to you, gotta be in tune because
- 28:34Speaker 5: puff this is something he's never done before, and I
- 28:37Speaker 5: don't know if he's ever done it since. But he
- 28:41Speaker 5: stayed quiet once I gave him a spiel. And it's
- 28:44Speaker 5: crazy too, because he had a security He had a
- 28:48Speaker 5: security standing in the corner just in case. So I
- 28:51Speaker 5: didn't know what I was in for you. He said, Yo, playboy,
- 28:59Speaker 5: he said, yo, stop you from leaving. But here's what
- 29:04Speaker 5: I'm gonna.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Do for you.
- 29:07Speaker 5: He said, I give you office space. I give you
- 29:10Speaker 5: my infrastructure. You don't have to worry about phones at
- 29:14Speaker 5: that time, of fax machines, you don't have to worry
- 29:16Speaker 5: about none of that. You could stay here and you
- 29:19Speaker 5: could build your company under my roof. And I want
- 29:22Speaker 5: to be your first account.
- 29:24Speaker 3: And that was the blessing of all.
- 29:27Speaker 5: And now granted, he said, I'm gonna take you off payroll,
- 29:30Speaker 5: but I'm not paying you. You're gonna pay yoursel like
- 29:33Speaker 5: like you want to be an entrepreneur, Like you're gonna
- 29:35Speaker 5: do it on your own but he allowed me to
- 29:38Speaker 5: keep my health insurance and I was able to build
- 29:41Speaker 5: my company within his company. And I'm ever grateful to
- 29:47Speaker 5: this man for that because that's how I was able to,
- 29:51Speaker 5: you know, go out and build a staff.
- 29:56Speaker 3: And all of those things.
- 29:57Speaker 5: And you know the great part about it is so
- 29:59Speaker 5: many people in the outside world they didn't know, so
- 30:02Speaker 5: I kept I was able to keep that that that
- 30:04Speaker 5: affiliation being that close to him.
- 30:08Speaker 4: They just thought you were still I was still there.
- 30:10Speaker 4: So is that the birth of power moves in? That
- 30:12Speaker 4: is the birth of because I mean I've listened to
- 30:15Speaker 4: a lot of your stuff and he was like, Yo,
- 30:16Speaker 4: you've been an entrepreneur.
- 30:17Speaker 3: Since you were born. It's the thing you want to
- 30:19Speaker 3: do so much.
- 30:20Speaker 4: So PM I was that the you already had that
- 30:23Speaker 4: vision drawn up or as you were doing the Street
- 30:25Speaker 4: Team and you were like, you know what, I got
- 30:26Speaker 4: this thing that I think I want to do. Had
- 30:28Speaker 4: that been something that you would originally.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Planned, well, you got a one hundred percent right. I've
- 30:34Speaker 5: always been an entrepreneur. I was that kid who was
- 30:36Speaker 5: watching cars, I was doing any packing bags, I was
- 30:39Speaker 5: doing anything everything I could do. But this is you know,
- 30:44Speaker 5: when you really good at what you do, like when
- 30:46Speaker 5: you and I told y'all like I was brutal, like
- 30:50Speaker 5: I was a beast and what what? While I was
- 30:55Speaker 5: working these records and we was coming up with these
- 30:57Speaker 5: incredible marketing campaigns. I was doing it for bad Boy,
- 31:03Speaker 5: but I started to get calls from corporate brands and
- 31:08Speaker 5: they wanted to know like who is like who's behind this?
- 31:12Speaker 5: Like who's executing this? And I started to pick up
- 31:15Speaker 5: these accounts on the side and at the time, and
- 31:21Speaker 5: it's funny because you know, sometimes we tell people to
- 31:24Speaker 5: go out there, jump out the window, better on yourself.
- 31:26Speaker 5: I was making more money on the side than I
- 31:28Speaker 5: was making on my salary, and I was still scared
- 31:31Speaker 5: to leave and put my resignation in. So it was
- 31:35Speaker 5: just one of those things. It was a natural evolution.
- 31:37Speaker 5: I was always a hustler, but at the time I
- 31:39Speaker 5: was keeping it on the low. I had to hide
- 31:41Speaker 5: all of the side work that I was doing.
- 31:44Speaker 3: The boss find out I ain't paying no more.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So as far as building a marketing firm, how does
- 31:50Speaker 2: that work? As far as like you just working account
- 31:52Speaker 2: by account or do you have like one big account
- 31:55Speaker 2: that's kind of like carrying you over for the for
- 31:57Speaker 2: the for the time frame, because that could seem like
- 31:59Speaker 2: a pretty stress situation, right, It's like.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Being an entrepreneurs is a pretty stressful situation. That So, yeah, no,
- 32:07Speaker 5: you it comes both ways. To answer your question, you
- 32:10Speaker 5: get your retainer accounts. If you're blessed and lucky enough
- 32:14Speaker 5: in some of it, you you it's account by account,
- 32:18Speaker 5: Like you know, it might be brands out there that
- 32:20Speaker 5: are launching new campaigns and they just need somebody to
- 32:23Speaker 5: execute it. They need somebody to come in with fresh
- 32:26Speaker 5: new ideas and it's just for this launch.
- 32:30Speaker 3: You know.
- 32:30Speaker 5: It might be for you know, the Christmas season October, November, December,
- 32:36Speaker 5: or it might be the launch of these new sneakers
- 32:39Speaker 5: or McDonald's decides that they come out they have a
- 32:41Speaker 5: new campaign we just wanted for the next six months.
- 32:45Speaker 3: So you're good. So you always are juggling accounts.
- 32:47Speaker 2: What was your favorite what's your highlight of your marketing.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Too? To come to mind off the rip number one,
- 32:58Speaker 3: the voter Die campaign of that was a big four.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I had that shirt and definitely had that shirt. That
- 33:06Speaker 3: was a big one.
- 33:07Speaker 5: Yeah, and and and the man behind it like like
- 33:11Speaker 5: that was Puff's brain child for for one hundred percent.
- 33:14Speaker 3: But we we.
- 33:14Speaker 5: Were the executors on the streets and then it was
- 33:19Speaker 5: their rock boys. It was it was, you know, creating
- 33:22Speaker 5: that program.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Oh so you so Nick Storm you worked with Nick Storm?
- 33:28Speaker 2: Or that.
- 33:30Speaker 3: I saw that show like.
- 33:38Speaker 5: I do watch while so no, shout out to Nick.
- 33:46Speaker 5: Here's here's a real right.
- 33:49Speaker 4: That's all I got, you know what, Like he's all
- 33:53Speaker 4: he's I think he's the first, maybe the only right
- 33:55Speaker 4: to bring his own wide glasses start.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Nickas Dope, nickas Dope, niggas dope.
- 34:02Speaker 3: But the the.
- 34:06Speaker 5: Here's the birth of the Sarraq Boys, right. I got
- 34:09Speaker 5: a call before Sarraq was what y'all know it to be,
- 34:16Speaker 5: Soraq was selling something like forty thousand cases.
- 34:19Speaker 3: You know.
- 34:20Speaker 5: I went up to the very first meeting with Puff
- 34:22Speaker 5: and a woman named Jackie Lee, who deserves her credit.
- 34:25Speaker 5: She was working at Diagio and she was the one
- 34:28Speaker 5: who had the the uh, the out of the box
- 34:33Speaker 5: thought that, yo, we should bring somebody in that is
- 34:36Speaker 5: on the level of a diddy and have him put
- 34:40Speaker 5: his muscle behind this brand. And Puff went in and
- 34:44Speaker 5: the deal was done, and I'll never forget Puff called me.
- 34:47Speaker 5: It was five am. He was in Miami crib and
- 34:51Speaker 5: he woke me up and he he you know, he
- 34:54Speaker 5: was doing what he do, prays Yo, this one can
- 34:58Speaker 5: change all.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Our lives playable way like listen man, like like I.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Need you and this is exact words, Yo, I need
- 35:05Speaker 5: you to put that brilliant market and brain in yours
- 35:08Speaker 5: to work man like this can this can be the
- 35:11Speaker 5: one that set us up for life. And I had
- 35:16Speaker 5: to sit and I had to think, what can we
- 35:21Speaker 5: do that would be effective? And here's a deal, right,
- 35:27Speaker 5: people know sir rock now, but phonetically try sounding out
- 35:34Speaker 5: C I R O C like. I was taking this
- 35:37Speaker 5: to people in the hood and influencers and people.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Was like urac like.
- 35:42Speaker 5: People didn't even know how to pronounce it. So there
- 35:46Speaker 5: was certain hurdles we had to come over. And then
- 35:48Speaker 5: I had the thought process of you know, it's just
- 35:55Speaker 5: one of those moments man, where you're like, Yo, it's
- 35:58Speaker 5: the DJs.
- 35:59Speaker 3: You know, my whole career have been working with.
- 36:02Speaker 5: The DJs, and that's why you gotta trust this process, man,
- 36:06Speaker 5: you have to trust the process. I was a dude
- 36:10Speaker 5: who didn't even want to work with the DJs. Puff
- 36:13Speaker 5: and Harf, Pierre told me, you're taking this job, you
- 36:18Speaker 5: have to be the guy who runs mixshow. That's what
- 36:22Speaker 5: they said. Like when my man and Malcolm Miles left
- 36:24Speaker 5: the company, they made me run And it was the
- 36:26Speaker 5: best thing that ever happened to me because I built
- 36:28Speaker 5: these these incredible relationships with all of these different DJs
- 36:31Speaker 5: around the country. And when I started to think about it,
- 36:35Speaker 5: I say, Yo, you know what, we don't even need
- 36:38Speaker 5: to go far from home. The DJs are in the clubs,
- 36:43Speaker 5: and what do they sell in the clubs?
- 36:46Speaker 3: Liquor.
- 36:47Speaker 5: The DJs are on the radio, and they're shouting stuff
- 36:51Speaker 5: out all day every day in between the hottest records.
- 36:56Speaker 5: So I started to put together the hottest DJs around
- 37:02Speaker 5: the country. And I didn't come up with the name
- 37:05Speaker 5: Sarah Boys. I don't know who came up with it,
- 37:07Speaker 5: but and I think it was powerf who came up
- 37:10Speaker 5: with it.
- 37:11Speaker 3: But it was he said, who came up with it?
- 37:16Speaker 2: J came up Yeah at the video shoot.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:21Speaker 5: But but putting that DJ crew together is what really
- 37:25Speaker 5: took us over the top because it was a way
- 37:27Speaker 5: to bring the brand into people's lifestyles in the most seamless,
- 37:35Speaker 5: the most like It just was easy, and I hand
- 37:40Speaker 5: picked every DJ, and I wanted to make the program aspirational,
- 37:44Speaker 5: so if you became a sack boy, that meant you
- 37:48Speaker 5: made it.
- 37:49Speaker 4: You.
- 37:49Speaker 5: Yeah, you got to stamp like I had DJs all
- 37:52Speaker 5: over the world, Like can I be a Siah? No,
- 37:54Speaker 5: you cannot get the work so like like seriously. And
- 37:58Speaker 5: it's funny because we talked about self right. Self is
- 38:01Speaker 5: a dude I've been knowing since he was a young buck,
- 38:03Speaker 5: like like, and I used to always tell Self because
- 38:05Speaker 5: Self used to always want records and.
- 38:08Speaker 3: I used to be like yourself, like you're not urgent, like.
- 38:11Speaker 5: I'm giving this record to Clue, I'm giving this record yeah,
- 38:16Speaker 5: and here tell you and and it and it made
- 38:20Speaker 5: my heart feel good when when when when Self went
- 38:24Speaker 5: so freaking odd and he had this city, New York
- 38:27Speaker 5: City on fire. Wasn't a club you can go to
- 38:30Speaker 5: without Self breaking records. And I never forget the call
- 38:34Speaker 5: and being like, Yo, come up here, I got a
- 38:37Speaker 5: record for you. Nobody else got it, your urgent playboy.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Having self be a rock boy. That's like you remember
- 38:46Speaker 3: what record it was? I don't even remember.
- 38:49Speaker 5: I just remember being so happy to tell him, like, Yo,
- 38:51Speaker 5: you made it like you official.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Now from that story, man, and I'm just listening to it.
- 38:56Speaker 3: I'm like the power of relationships.
- 38:58Speaker 4: And we talked about out Man, you didn't even want
- 39:01Speaker 4: to be around DJs, but look at what being around
- 39:04Speaker 4: DJ's helped you from obviously with the bad boys situation,
- 39:08Speaker 4: but now with the rock thing, and then that transitions
- 39:10Speaker 4: into your your next masterpiece, which is the global spin.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Absolutely, yeah, let's let's talk that.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Because DJ I feel like DJ's are forgotten people in
- 39:19Speaker 2: hip hop. There's really no hip hop without a DJ.
- 39:22Speaker 2: They're very influential people, like you said, from the nightclubs,
- 39:25Speaker 2: from the radios too. I mean, the DJs need to
- 39:30Speaker 2: break the record. Like you know what I'm saying. That's
- 39:32Speaker 2: what when I said early hip hop dies, blame it
- 39:34Speaker 2: on the DJ you got.
- 39:36Speaker 4: You gotta think though early hip hop, everybody had a DJ.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Right if it was Eric B and Rock Kim, right,
- 39:41Speaker 4: if it was j MC. Even the Fresh Prince had
- 39:45Speaker 4: Jazzy Jeff. You know what I'm saying, everybody everybody had.
- 39:48Speaker 4: The salt Pepper has been derelaed and then it was
- 39:52Speaker 4: the DJ was a part of I mean you can
- 39:55Speaker 4: go to E. P. M. D. With Scratch Crass. I mean,
- 39:58Speaker 4: the DJ was a part of the group.
- 40:00Speaker 2: They was the third and then and then even when
- 40:03Speaker 2: the DJ kind of transformed into a producer, I still
- 40:05Speaker 2: feel like I feel like Swiss Beats is still a
- 40:07Speaker 2: DJ with like his relationship with DMX, you know what
- 40:09Speaker 2: I'm saying, But he's a producer side but it's like
- 40:12Speaker 2: like Doctor Dre and Snoop. But but you you know,
- 40:15Speaker 2: Swiss was a DJ, Yeah, exactly.
- 40:17Speaker 5: So when you hear so many of his beats sonically,
- 40:21Speaker 5: the reason why he's so successful because he can think
- 40:25Speaker 5: like a DJ, like, oh like when this, when this
- 40:27Speaker 5: beating it, when this kick comes in.
- 40:30Speaker 3: Like the DJ can bring it back. He gets like
- 40:32Speaker 3: he think and that's why he.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Was so successful even like a Mustard and YG in
- 40:36Speaker 2: today's time, same thing.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Yep.
- 40:37Speaker 2: So all right, so yeah, so the DJ is very
- 40:40Speaker 2: influencial people, very important people, but they've been ignored for
- 40:42Speaker 2: a long time. So you have this idea to come
- 40:43Speaker 2: up with an award show for DJs. Did how did
- 40:46Speaker 2: that come about? It's twofold number one. My career, going
- 40:53Speaker 2: back to the nineties, it always involved the DJs and
- 40:57Speaker 2: they have been so important to me becoming me, becoming
- 41:04Speaker 2: that guy in the industry. So that was number one,
- 41:08Speaker 2: but number two. As the music industry really.
- 41:16Speaker 5: Blossomed, you know, you had a lot of people who
- 41:20Speaker 5: were working the DJs, and the dj started feeling theirself like,
- 41:26Speaker 5: you know, they getting calls from everybody, and you know,
- 41:31Speaker 5: some of them would forget, like yo play, I've been
- 41:34Speaker 5: down with you from day one. You know, if they
- 41:37Speaker 5: got fifteen people calling them to play records, it's easy
- 41:41Speaker 5: to get a little bit of swelled head. So I
- 41:44Speaker 5: had to kind of turn the tables. I had to
- 41:47Speaker 5: be like, I'm not regular, like I don't know about.
- 41:51Speaker 3: These promotion guys, but not with me. So part of
- 41:57Speaker 3: it was my give back to the culture.
- 42:01Speaker 5: And really acknowledging the forgotten, the guys who were on
- 42:08Speaker 5: the ground breaking these records. I would watch artists that
- 42:12Speaker 5: I would break and they would be unknown, and they
- 42:15Speaker 5: would be on these conference calls with these DJs and
- 42:18Speaker 5: anything you need, I got you this, that and the third.
- 42:20Speaker 5: Then the artists blow up and they go and get
- 42:23Speaker 5: a Grammy and they think everything.
- 42:26Speaker 4: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.

- 45:16Speaker 5: They think the janitor and they building, and they forget
- 45:19Speaker 5: to think the DJ, so they would have forgotten ones.
- 45:23Speaker 5: And then I just like I said, you know, I
- 45:26Speaker 5: I'm like, don't confuse me with these other promoters, like,
- 45:32Speaker 5: so let me create something that when my phone call
- 45:35Speaker 5: come through, y'all are eager to pick that phone up.
- 45:38Speaker 5: So that was part of my mind.
- 45:40Speaker 2: It's almost like a marketing play almost after now of
- 45:42Speaker 2: DJ's you got the award show, so they kind of
- 45:45Speaker 2: they gotta hold you in high regard because you're like
- 45:47Speaker 2: the guy.
- 45:48Speaker 5: I'm like, I'm for them. Nobody else did it for him.
- 45:52Speaker 5: Nobody else did And see here was the beauty. I
- 45:56Speaker 5: created the Global Spin Awards when when I was transitioning
- 46:00Speaker 5: out of music full time, so I didn't need anything
- 46:04Speaker 5: from them. You don't have to play my record. This
- 46:08Speaker 5: is my give back to you, This is my give
- 46:10Speaker 5: back to the culture. This is gonna be part of
- 46:12Speaker 5: my legacy. So it was it worked, you know, kind
- 46:17Speaker 5: of across the board, and like I said, it wasn't
- 46:21Speaker 5: too many of my calls that was not answered or
- 46:23Speaker 5: not returned right away.
- 46:25Speaker 2: I got a couple questions about the technical side of things,
- 46:27Speaker 2: because we hear about the Grammy so much, and it's
- 46:29Speaker 2: fitting that we have having this conversation because you know, everybody
- 46:32Speaker 2: every year somebody gets snubbed at the Grammy's recently little baby.
- 46:35Speaker 2: But so these are war shows are actually businesses. So
- 46:40Speaker 2: a few questions. First, how do you go about because
- 46:44Speaker 2: I'm assuming this costs a lot of money, right, how
- 46:46Speaker 2: do you go about getting sponsors to to kind of
- 46:50Speaker 2: put this put this together because it's a lot I'm
- 46:53Speaker 2: assuming to have venues and things of that nature, Like
- 46:56Speaker 2: what's the inn of workings From the business side.
- 46:59Speaker 5: It's a great question. And again I gotta go back
- 47:01Speaker 5: to what I keep preaching, Trust the process. Trust the process.
- 47:06Speaker 5: God don't have you on this road for no reason.
- 47:09Speaker 5: I didn't know when I was building Power Moves Inc.
- 47:13Speaker 5: Marketing and Promotion that all of the brands that we
- 47:17Speaker 5: were doing this great work with one day I would
- 47:20Speaker 5: need to go back to them and say look, I'm developing,
- 47:25Speaker 5: and I'm developing the Grammys for the DJs, and now
- 47:29Speaker 5: I need you guys to come on board and sponsor.
- 47:33Speaker 5: So for me, I'd already had an infrastructure in place,
- 47:38Speaker 5: proposal writers. You know, we were in touch with the
- 47:44Speaker 5: marketing directors at different brands. So I'm not gonna say
- 47:47Speaker 5: it's easy, because it was never It is never easy
- 47:51Speaker 5: building anything from the ground up. It's never easy. But
- 47:55Speaker 5: for us at least, we were prepared to go out
- 47:58Speaker 5: there and get this sponsorship. And yes, it is a
- 48:01Speaker 5: very very expensive endeavor to embark on trying to create this,
- 48:08Speaker 5: this live award show.
- 48:10Speaker 3: And I dreamed big.
- 48:12Speaker 5: I dream very big, So I wanted to be the
- 48:15Speaker 5: Grammys the first year out I want in my vision
- 48:19Speaker 5: was you know, when people think of DJs at that time,
- 48:22Speaker 5: a lot of the DJs was overweight, you know, like
- 48:26Speaker 5: every DJ was heavy for some reason. That was like
- 48:29Speaker 5: a prerequisite to spend records. But people don't really see
- 48:33Speaker 5: them as is the way I wanted the world to
- 48:37Speaker 5: see them. Global Spin Awards won because we created a
- 48:43Speaker 5: platform that was red carpet invite only. You gotta be
- 48:49Speaker 5: suited and booted, bring your wife and I also I
- 48:55Speaker 5: didn't DJs touch everybody's lives, right, Like, if you.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Listen the music, they're controlling the party. They control a party.
- 49:03Speaker 5: So you don't have to be in the music industry
- 49:05Speaker 5: to be impacted by the DJ. So I made it
- 49:09Speaker 5: my mission. I didn't want this to just be a
- 49:13Speaker 5: music based thing. I wanted if you're on TV and
- 49:18Speaker 5: you listening to, you know, a DJ's mixtape, you need
- 49:23Speaker 5: to be in a building the night that that DJ
- 49:25Speaker 5: is getting celebrated and honored.
- 49:28Speaker 3: So we went.
- 49:29Speaker 5: Into overdrive trying to get a lists from every every
- 49:33Speaker 5: industry you can think of to show up and get
- 49:37Speaker 5: and show their appreciation to these DJs who were all
- 49:41Speaker 5: but forgotten for many years.
- 49:42Speaker 3: So I mean again, the power of relationships, the power networking.
- 49:45Speaker 4: Right, you had the sponsorships because you were ready with
- 49:48Speaker 4: doing that. And I know when you try to first
- 49:50Speaker 4: put out the first global spin ord, the production wasn't
- 49:52Speaker 4: as great, but then you got to use a friend,
- 49:55Speaker 4: you phone a friend, a guy who had a TV
- 49:57Speaker 4: network to help.
- 49:58Speaker 3: You with the production. Absolutely again, trust the process. Yeah
- 50:03Speaker 3: that guy that you used to work for, How that
- 50:08Speaker 3: conversation go? How did you work that up?
- 50:10Speaker 5: Okay, So if anybody know puff Puff, he ain't the
- 50:14Speaker 5: dude you go to when you first have an idea.
- 50:16Speaker 5: Everybody makes that mistake, Like Pufa, I got a big idea.
- 50:20Speaker 5: He's the kind of dude you gotta work him and
- 50:23Speaker 5: you kind of get it hot to where he want
- 50:25Speaker 5: to attend. He didn't come to the Global Spin Awards
- 50:28Speaker 5: until it was like year four, like like, he didn't
- 50:31Speaker 5: even show up. And then when he did show up
- 50:34Speaker 5: and we had it crazy. It was all kind of
- 50:37Speaker 5: a listers in a building when he did show up.
- 50:40Speaker 5: I remember that night shout to James Cruise, who was
- 50:44Speaker 5: his manager at the time. James Cruise, you know, was
- 50:48Speaker 5: was at the Spin Awards and he comes every year
- 50:51Speaker 5: and he was calling Puff like, yo, you need to
- 50:54Speaker 5: be here, and Puffa was like, yo, you sure like like.
- 50:57Speaker 3: This this press thing really is working.
- 51:01Speaker 5: He's and he's literally standing there sweating because I'm like,
- 51:05Speaker 5: your Cruise, get your man in here. But I didn't
- 51:08Speaker 5: even invite Puff into year four and when he came,
- 51:14Speaker 5: he's looked around the room in his calid At the time,
- 51:18Speaker 5: you know, Drama was one of the biggest DJs in
- 51:21Speaker 5: the industry.
- 51:22Speaker 3: It was Flax it was Clue.
- 51:24Speaker 5: It was all kinds of these big and then it
- 51:27Speaker 5: wasn't just THEMB it was Kevin Lyles, it was Luted Chris,
- 51:31Speaker 5: it was you know, we had so many high level people.
- 51:34Speaker 5: It was like, if you don't come, you look like
- 51:37Speaker 5: the odd ball out. And when he came, he told me, right, no,
- 51:42Speaker 5: I'm lying, And this is another guy y'all might want
- 51:44Speaker 5: to bring on to your show. Keith clink Scales was
- 51:47Speaker 5: at the time CEO of Revolt and Keith came to
- 51:52Speaker 5: the Global spinning wards the year before and he came,
- 51:56Speaker 5: he stayed for a half hour. He said, prayers, I'm
- 51:58Speaker 5: gonna get this on TV. He came to next year
- 52:01Speaker 5: and when Puff came and that was it.
- 52:03Speaker 3: It was all she wrote. Now now now it's not
- 52:07Speaker 3: local no more.
- 52:09Speaker 2: So how's the like, how is the awards divided up?
- 52:13Speaker 2: Like do you have a committee that kind of like
- 52:15Speaker 2: decides who wins the awards? And how do you come
- 52:18Speaker 2: up with different categories?
- 52:20Speaker 5: Coming up with different categories was easy and hard at
- 52:23Speaker 5: the same time. I know the culture. I'm from the
- 52:25Speaker 5: South Bronx. I grew up knowing you know, who were
- 52:31Speaker 5: the hot DJs, knowing the different categories we should break
- 52:35Speaker 5: them into. But what we did was we put together
- 52:38Speaker 5: a mastermind group people who really understood the culture. And
- 52:44Speaker 5: I never voted, And I modeled it after some of
- 52:48Speaker 5: the most successful awards shows out there.
- 52:50Speaker 3: So I modeled it after the Grammys.
- 52:52Speaker 5: I modeled it after the the Golden Globes. So whereas
- 52:58Speaker 5: you see it the Grammys or excuse me, at the Oscars,
- 53:01Speaker 5: everybody go and they're like, first, I want to think
- 53:04Speaker 5: the Academy.
- 53:06Speaker 3: I had to create my own.
- 53:08Speaker 2: Version of that to what exactly is that. That's like
- 53:11Speaker 2: a group of people, like a secret society.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Of just seventos. No, it is. It is respected individuals.
- 53:20Speaker 5: So it might be promotion people, it might be bloggers,
- 53:24Speaker 5: it might be writers, it might.
- 53:25Speaker 3: It was all people from the culture.
- 53:28Speaker 5: And I would pick up the phone and I would
- 53:30Speaker 5: call these people individually, like, look, I'm trying to put
- 53:33Speaker 5: together the most fair and honest award show for DJs,
- 53:38Speaker 5: and I'm gonna need you guys to vote every And
- 53:42Speaker 5: we call it the Bureau the way the Oscars call
- 53:44Speaker 5: it the Academy, we call it the Bureau. So if
- 53:48Speaker 5: you're on the Bureau, you get one vote, one vote
- 53:51Speaker 5: and one vote only, so it ain't like Troy can
- 53:54Speaker 5: impact the outcome of who gets a Global Spend War.
- 53:58Speaker 5: It's not like pack who gets a Global spin Award.
- 54:03Speaker 3: And then myself, I never would vote.
- 54:05Speaker 5: I never touched it because I never wanted anybody to
- 54:08Speaker 5: accuse me of tampering with the process, tam favorite being
- 54:14Speaker 5: exactly showing favoritism, so I always stayed away from it.
- 54:16Speaker 4: We got Lifetime Achievement awards. Absolutely one of somebody from
- 54:19Speaker 4: my neighborhood want or from yeah, the MS he went
- 54:27Speaker 4: to Woodlands and all that.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Get out of here him and such from my neighborhood,
- 54:31Speaker 2: but he's definitely.
- 54:32Speaker 3: From thats was in class with me like that. Dude
- 54:34Speaker 3: was falling asleep, and.
- 54:35Speaker 2: I think he wanted like he wanted like he wanted
- 54:37Speaker 2: like a DJ of the Year award something like that.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Now he's big time.
- 54:40Speaker 2: He wanted something. You remember, it was important, but I
- 54:44Speaker 2: remember when he wanted.
- 54:44Speaker 5: He deserves it. He did and he's a deal, right.
- 54:47Speaker 5: I think Sus is one of the one of the
- 54:49Speaker 5: dopest DJs in the game. And for years he didn't win.
- 54:53Speaker 5: And Sus wasn't even talking to me, like just to
- 54:57Speaker 5: keep it on and and this is such one for
- 55:00Speaker 5: anybody who is not from New York City. He's a
- 55:03Speaker 5: big time DJ on Windy Williams Show. A riot carries DJ.
- 55:07Speaker 5: But Sus wasn't even talking to me. He was taking
- 55:09Speaker 5: a personally and I was just like, yo, like I
- 55:11Speaker 5: have nothing to do with this, like like do your
- 55:15Speaker 5: thing out here, people vote for you. I just don't
- 55:18Speaker 5: know what to tell you. And a lot of DJs
- 55:20Speaker 5: didn't think that they could actually win it. And I'm
- 55:23Speaker 5: gonna tell you another story. Who was another person who
- 55:28Speaker 5: I couldn't believe that he would He didn't win.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Every year.
- 55:31Speaker 5: D Knights would come to the Global Spin Awards dressed
- 55:35Speaker 5: up in a tuxedo every year, and he would sit
- 55:38Speaker 5: there and be overlooked, like D Knights would be nominated
- 55:41Speaker 5: in like five categories and have to sit there and
- 55:45Speaker 5: never ever ever get the award.
- 55:49Speaker 2: And then this year you don't have the award.
- 55:51Speaker 3: Show. I remember, he's a funny thing. I remember it was.
- 55:58Speaker 5: I forget what year it was. Maybe it's good Will
- 56:00Speaker 5: Spending Ward six five or something like that. For I
- 56:02Speaker 5: don't know, but I'm looking around the audience now I
- 56:06Speaker 5: know who won, and I'm looking and I'm like, yo.
- 56:09Speaker 3: D Nice, always come see him.
- 56:11Speaker 5: I'm looking at like I called D Nice because I
- 56:15Speaker 5: know I got two awards with him. Oh he was
- 56:19Speaker 5: a person who always supported I call him up and
- 56:23Speaker 5: I'm like, yo, Derek. We wait and he's like, yo,
- 56:27Speaker 5: I ain't coming this year. Like I'm DJing. And this
- 56:30Speaker 5: is the first and the only time I've ever told
- 56:33Speaker 5: somebody they won.
- 56:34Speaker 3: It's in real time.
- 56:35Speaker 5: I said, Derek, I don't care what you gotta do,
- 56:38Speaker 5: but you better leave with you at and go home,
- 56:42Speaker 5: get dressed and get down here. I don't know if
- 56:46Speaker 5: the party went on that he was DJ and I
- 56:48Speaker 5: don't know what he was, but he came in the.
- 56:51Speaker 3: Nick of time. It was like, and these club DJ
- 56:57Speaker 3: D Nice and he comes right yo, Bron.
- 57:04Speaker 2: There we go a lot of history this year, this
- 57:07Speaker 2: year to quarantine. He changed the game with that.
- 57:09Speaker 3: Oh my cousins, people magazines. One of the people of
- 57:12Speaker 3: the end. But that's why you can never give up process.
- 57:14Speaker 3: You got the trust.
- 57:15Speaker 5: I mean, listen, you know me and you were talking
- 57:18Speaker 5: earlier about KR Ris one and down production.
- 57:22Speaker 3: D Nice fifteen years old. They call me D Nice
- 57:27Speaker 3: already there you go.
- 57:28Speaker 5: You know D Nice has been hanging around the game
- 57:32Speaker 5: for years, and it was such a you know, it
- 57:35Speaker 5: just touched my heart to see that this man finally
- 57:39Speaker 5: got the accolades he deserves and to seeing winning on
- 57:43Speaker 5: the level that he's winning now, you know.
- 57:46Speaker 3: But but this is what Pete and I'm sorry. People
- 57:48Speaker 3: think you just get into the game and and and blow.
- 57:54Speaker 5: And maybe in your case that's true, maybe else case true.
- 58:03Speaker 5: But there's no such thing as an overnight success. It
- 58:08Speaker 5: just ain't and and and and when you see people
- 58:12Speaker 5: finally get to where they're going, it's no different than
- 58:15Speaker 5: Cali Kalid have been putting out hits for years and
- 58:18Speaker 5: years and years and years and then finally it was
- 58:21Speaker 5: his time. So don't think that people just blow overnight,
- 58:24Speaker 5: because they don't. They've been putting in work for years.
- 58:26Speaker 4: I gotta this is from a hip hop historian, And
- 58:29Speaker 4: I'm wondering, right because obviously before you started this there
- 58:32Speaker 4: was nothing.
- 58:33Speaker 3: So what did it mean to some of the older.
- 58:35Speaker 4: Guys, the red Alerts, the cool herds, the chuck chillout
- 58:39Speaker 4: of the world, Like, what did they what were their
- 58:42Speaker 4: thoughts in response to this man?
- 58:45Speaker 5: You're asking great questions, You're asking such great questions.
- 58:50Speaker 3: Red Alert.
- 58:52Speaker 5: You know, I idolized that man I grew up listening to
- 58:55Speaker 5: Red Red Alert is the only person that me showing
- 59:01Speaker 5: ever named an award after. So I named for all
- 59:07Speaker 5: of the older DJs who are still doing their things,
- 59:10Speaker 5: the legend. I was like, Yo, the word legend has
- 59:13Speaker 5: a connotation to it. So thanks for calling me a
- 59:15Speaker 5: legend at the beginning of the show. I appreciate that
- 59:18Speaker 5: it make you feel like like Yo, you olding out
- 59:21Speaker 5: the game. But for all of the guys who are
- 59:25Speaker 5: still doing their thing, but they might not be the
- 59:28Speaker 5: young you know, DJs who are who are now moving,
- 59:32Speaker 5: I named that award the Red Award, so you know,
- 59:36Speaker 5: every year we're able to give some of the old
- 59:40Speaker 5: you know, whether it's yeah, all of those guys. If
- 59:45Speaker 5: you if you're doing your thing, you get to rid
- 59:47Speaker 5: the Red Award. But to answer your question, Global Spin
- 59:51Speaker 5: Awards won. It was a disaster. It was a nightmare.
- 59:57Speaker 5: I didn't know what I was doing. As much as
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: as prepared as we thought we was, we wasn't. It
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: was Murphy's law. Everything that could go wrong went wrong
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: and a lot. And what I came to learn is
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: nobody wants to lose publicly. So a lot of the
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: younger DJs didn't show even though they was nominated. They
- 1:00:19Speaker 5: was like, yo, it's a chance I'm gonna take an
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: l publicly, so I'm just if I win, great showing
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: mail me my trophy. But it was the older guys,
- 1:00:29Speaker 5: so being in the building and seeing the the you know,
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: the Chucks of the world, to.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: See the Jazzies of the world, to see.
- 1:00:40Speaker 5: Red Alert and just all of it, you know, grand
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: Master Flash, all of these guys who really set it
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: off for this culture that we call hip hop cool
- 1:00:50Speaker 5: hurt all in the building. It was those guys who
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: all showed up on year one and it made all
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: of the young eyes come on year two because those
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: were their idols. That's why they started to spend to
- 1:01:05Speaker 5: begin with. So yes, it meant a lot. And it's
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: crazy because I'm such a perfectionist. And when Global Spin
- 1:01:12Speaker 5: Awards was over, you know, I was throwing chairs. I
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: was like I wanted to like I was tearing stuff up,
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: like you don't even want to see me the day
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: after or the two weeks after Global Spin Awards because
- 1:01:26Speaker 5: every you know, you're doing a live show, it goes wrong.
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: But it was read Alert who went up on that
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: stage that night. He said, Prayers, what you doing here?
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: You gotta continue this, You have to continue this. And
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: it was it was words like that from a lot
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: of the ogs that I looked up to. That that
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: gave me the courage to go out there and fall
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: on my face year two, fall on my face year three,
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: and by year four we was off to the races.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: Me let me ask you this.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Shows and the Grammys, and every year somebody gets snubbed,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: and it's a whole big thing. What do you think,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: Why why do black artists put so much creed in
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: validation and white award shows.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: Well, let's just face it.
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: Number one, the Grammys are the Grammys, Like that is
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: the biggest awards ceremony for music artists out there. So
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: I don't know if it's a white thing a black thing,
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: if that is the gold standard, you want to win
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: a Grammy, you grow up wanting to win a Grammy.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: Now we're seeing now the Grammys are getting a lot
- 1:02:38Speaker 5: of pushback. They're getting a lot of people coming forth
- 1:02:42Speaker 5: saying the Grammys are out of touch, they're irrelevant, they're
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: not supporting like the biggest artists on a planet.
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: Drake is like, yo, I'm not going.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: To that, but I feel like it's only a black
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: artist that can plain though. Like even if you look
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: at the Oscars, right, Jackie Chan never won an Oscar,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: but he makes so much money. The guy made like
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: forty million dollars like two years ago. Nobody even knew
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: he put out a movie. I never heard Jackie Chan
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: like trying to boycott the Oscars, like they think it's
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: our culture. Man, I think it's no. I'm not gonna
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: say it's black or white because you don't see this
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: on the Hollywood side on film.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: You don't see this.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Will Smith I remember he had an issue with the Oscars. Oscars,
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: but he's very very diplomatic. You don't see them coming
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: as hard as the rappers coming. I think it might
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: be more of a rap culture, which is very outspoken,
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: as opposed to just black and white.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: I could be wrong, but yeah, I mean the eleatic
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: part about it is like, yeah, we'll do that.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: But when you get nominated for a BT, well, you
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: don't show up. You know what I'm saying. When you
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: do what the Soul training was, you don't go.
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: And it's like we said this like on episode too man,
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: disable the accolades make the most money.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: You can be smart about it and invested.
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, Like, there's no need for
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: somebody that to validate you. Like I told Christy, I'm like, yo, bro,
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: little Baby got the best albums, yere, I don't care
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: what anybody says.
- 1:04:00Speaker 5: Yeah, but you want to know something. It's human nature
- 1:04:03Speaker 5: to want to be validated. That that's why people come
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: to y'all show, because you guys are shining a spotlight
- 1:04:13Speaker 5: on people who would be otherwise looked over. Now they
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: might be rich, and they might be doing their thing,
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: and they might have made it out the hood, but
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: you guys are putting a new spin on education or
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: on people who otherwise play the background.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: No, that's a very true point, and it's a great
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: networking tool for interviews. And I learned that early on.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Was that, like you said, somebody could be a real
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: estate developer and they might be a millionaire, but nobody
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: knows them exactly. Nobody, deep down, everybody has some level
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: of vanity. Everybody wants to be acknowledged. Everybody, nobody doesn't
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: want somebody to know who they are for the most part,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: So yeah, I could see it both ways. I can
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: see it both ways. I just think that at a
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: certain point you just got to come to realization that
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: the Grammy's been out of touch for thirty years, like like.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Nothing's nothing new. Awards in nineteen nine. Yeah, it's nothing,
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: it's nothing new.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: But let me ask you this another DJ question, because
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: when we look at I looked at the Forbes list,
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: like the last twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen. Obviously this year
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: is uh, you know, a crazy year because of COVID.
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: But so the top DJs was Chain Smokers made forty
- 1:05:19Speaker 2: six million, Marsh Mellow Mellow forty million, Calvin Harris made
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: thirty eight millions, Steve Aoki made thirty million, Diplo made
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: twenty five million, Testo made twenty four Yes, Tiesto, Martin
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Garreks Garrick's made nineteen million, and David Getta get A
- 1:05:36Speaker 2: made eighteen million. So first, that's a lot of money.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: What year were talking year twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen, they
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: still making that money?
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought you was gonna say, because they was
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: making that kind of money in fourteen fifteen.
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the sixteen.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: That's that's from June twenty eighteen to June twenty nineteen. Okay,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: go ahead, So all right, a few things strike my
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: attention here. Ay, that's a lot of money. B DJ
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: and DJing is started with hip hop. That's a hip
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: hop thing, started in the Bronx with Spanish and black people.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: That's that's just a fact. Nobody on that list is black,
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: even though DJ started at that. So now the d
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: M has taken over. So where where did what happened?
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Because a lot of especially a lot of hip hop DJs,
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: they struggle financially, they do a lot of clubs, and
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: the clubs scenes diminishes.
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: Kind of over you know, warded.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: And I'm just wondering your perspective, like do you see
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: an issue with that, Like there's no there's no even
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: like the top DJs aren't making this kind of money.
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: Answer your question, you're damn right, I see, Like yeah,
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: like it's it's it's egregious, it's disgusting. You know, I
- 1:06:56Speaker 5: can tell you even with the Global Spin Awards, right,
- 1:07:00Speaker 5: I remember Brands telling me, oh, we can't sponsor this
- 1:07:05Speaker 5: because you don't have some of the people on that list.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: I won't name names.
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: Oh it's not mainstream enough because you don't have some
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: of those names, And I'm like, what, which made me
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: even more furious to go out there and make this
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: the biggest award show for what I know to be.
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: Those DJ's favorite DJ. So when I hear those.
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: Type of numbers, it is a slap in the face
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: to all of the real And I don't want to
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: diss nobody, but it's crazy because you see some of
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: the people on that list I won't call names, and
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: they look like they're playing records and then they leave
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: the stage and the records is still.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: That's the mind boggling part is I'm crazy.
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: I'm thinking to myself, like I've seen a Marshmallow before,
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: I've seen a Calvin Harris and I'm like, yo, you're
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: telling me.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: DJ Scratch can't do that to an arena. He would
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: tear arena down.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: He would like Swiss and Mustard, all these guys and
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: even like all these new guys like they could do that.
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: I'm just wondering, is it that we lack the vision
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: of a large scale situation, because like I'm even like
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: cald like I've seen kal It open up for Beyonce
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: on a number of toys. I'm thinking, like, Yo, Callen
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: has enough catalog that he could be the headline for
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: an arena himself, if not a stadium at this point.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: So is it the lack of vision or I think
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: it's all above it.
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: I think it's it's somewhat lack of vision. And then
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: it goes into what I was saying, you know, twenty twenty, twenty, nineteen,
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: twenty eighteen seventeen, ever since that that orange head dude
- 1:08:53Speaker 5: got into office, he did so much for black people
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: that black people don't even realize. He put a battery
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: in our back like nobody else, like what like, like
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: you don't respect us, So we're gonna respect ourselves in
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: a whole different way.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: And then it becomes the birth of stuff.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: Like eyl and buy Black and people having pride in
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: who they are, like don't you ever look down on us?
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: So I think me having been through this, the powers
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: that be don't want to put the money. They don't
- 1:09:33Speaker 5: see the value in our people the way that they
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: see the value in some of the people who you
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: just read off that paper. And if they're writing the checks,
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: you know, and number one, if they're writing the checks,
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: but also if our DJs are making five thousand dollars,
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: and that means you're doing better than ninety percent of.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: The other DJs.
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: If you're making ten thousand dollars a set and you're
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: doing better than ninety nine percent of the other DJs,
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: you gotta really have a broader vision to be like yo,
- 1:10:06Speaker 5: no way limits.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: And I think I think that's why what d Knights
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: did over the Quarantine is going when this thing opens
- 1:10:12Speaker 4: back up, I could see him getting it sould Arena
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: right because as he should. As he should because we
- 1:10:18Speaker 4: literally watched him rock out. I'll never forget the first
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: time he did it in March, rocked out for eleven
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: hours straight and turn the world back on the Instagram
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: live or on the Instagram live, and it was like Yo, wow, I.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Mean it's like I said, it's just what it's like,
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: rock and roll anything like you started it, it should
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: at least be black, some black DJs in the time.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: There's no way that you have a DJ list of
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: highest paid DJs, and there's not where that's where it
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: started from. There would be no DJing without hip hop.
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: But but you know that, but think of Becky, who
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: is a thirty year old thirty five year old executive
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: that comes from des Moines, Iowa, or comes like she
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: didn't grow up in the same space that you grew up.
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: She didn't grow up in the same environment that you
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: grew up. So her value that she places when she
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: has a fifty hundred thousand dollars check to cut to
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: a DJ to do the annual Christmas party for X Corporation,
- 1:11:23Speaker 5: do you think she sees the same value in you know? Now,
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: she'll see it in d Night because he's mainstream. But
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: she ain't cutting that check to none of these other
- 1:11:34Speaker 5: guys who are so deservant of it. And you know,
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: if you have the check writers who don't come from
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: the culture and don't respect.
- 1:11:44Speaker 3: They love it, but they're not from it.
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: They want to partake in it and go to the
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: clubs and dance to all the hot hip hop, but
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: they don't necessarily want to hang out with nobody who
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: looks like you, me or you. They're like, nah, like
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: I know tes, I know Martin Garrick's, I know marsh Mellow.
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: Those are the people who I want to come and
- 1:12:08Speaker 5: DJ our party because everybody who's in this party knows them,
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: grew up on them.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Yeah, the Nice Man, the original shout to all the originals,
- 1:12:19Speaker 4: d Nice, Clark clamp By, Fido Stretch.
- 1:12:22Speaker 3: Who am I missing Stretch on Strong Bardo? That's it right? No, no, no, no,
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: rich Tony Tones in it. We went. We actually went
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: to one of their shows. Man, So it's rich Nice
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: one of of I think.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: I think, I think original, original, original, I think so,
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: I think it's I think.
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: If he's not, he's always standing in with us.
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: Salute to all the DJ's. I got one last DJ
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: question before we transition to to where you're at now
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: in life, DJ call this was it's actually a rock commercial.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: It was a great commercial when he said I had
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: a choice, and it showed like his journey fro when
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: he started things like I could be the biggest radio DJ,
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: I could be the biggest DJ. A lot of people
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: give Calent pushback because they feel, like, you know, for
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: a variety of different reasons. But I think it's safe
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: to say he's the biggest DJ hip hop history. Is
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: that safe to say?
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: It's safe? Yep?
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: Michael Jordan and DJU.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: And if we're talking, if we are.
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: All around just worldwide mainstream, what he did what he
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: did with not not not here.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: In New York, not in l A.
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: If you're talking Kalen walks into an event next to
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: every other DJ.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Oh, he's the most recognized, He's the most he is
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: the celebrity, he's the a lister.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Bar social media chan, snapchat champ changed his life. Fact. Yeah,
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: it's a powerful tool man. So let's talk about motivational speaking.
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: How did you become How did you get into that?
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Because it's like, all right, you start from music doing
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: the wards old marketing. At what point do you pivot
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: and say I have a story to tell and I
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: can motivate people. How does that come about?
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: Another great question. It didn't come about the way you
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: would think it would come about.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: It came about me again.
- 1:14:19Speaker 5: Listening to this inner voice, and I am unable to
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: shake it off. When God talks to me, it doesn't
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: matter how bad I don't want to listen. It starts
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: as a whisper and it becomes a smack across my head.
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: So I'm doing my marketing thing. We got all kinds
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: of clients making tons of money. I am you know
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: a music industry that there's not too many rooms I
- 1:14:53Speaker 5: can't get into. And I would sit at my desk.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: I would go to work, go to the office, and
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: I would sit at my desk and I felt incomplete.
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: I felt this, this.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: Can't be life.
- 1:15:10Speaker 5: Meanwhile, I got a staff that you know, they look
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: I'm the leader. I pay you know, their bills. They're
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: paying their bills because of checks that I create. And
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: I'm demotivated, and it's hard to fake for me. It's
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: so hard to fake motivation. It's so hard for me
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: to be anything but authentic and genuine. And I would
- 1:15:37Speaker 5: literally sit at my desk and I would listen to
- 1:15:42Speaker 5: Eric the hip hop preacher and the legend the Goat.
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: Yeah he's the legend, but the Goat. And I'm saying
- 1:15:50Speaker 5: that the guy who inspires me so much, Man, Inky Johnson,
- 1:15:53Speaker 5: I just spoke, is the best that every day Eric
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: has been. Yeah, but if y'all don't know Inky Johnson,
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: go and google this man. Inky Johnson saved my life.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: And I would sit there with my headphones on because
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: when you have a staff, you have to you lead
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: by example, right, So I can't come in there dragon
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: And you know, people see the boss like he's slacking,
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: so they might have thought I was listening to music,
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: but I was really listening to Inky, and I would
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: listen to Eric, and I was trying to find motivation.
- 1:16:36Speaker 5: And right around the time that that was happening, I
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: started to see life different. You get in your forties
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: and you start to realize there's more to this life
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: than making money. It's more to this life. Like I
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: love what y'all are doing, but people who come on
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: your show should be talking like, yes, you want to
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: be sessful, you want to make money, but it's more
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: to life than that. And I'm from the South Bronx
- 1:17:08Speaker 5: and I would look because I spend I don't live
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: in the South Bronx anymore, but my church is in
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: the South Bronx. Still my family, all of my friends
- 1:17:16Speaker 5: I grew up with, and I would go and I
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: would see the hood, and I started to remember when
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: I was a child and when I had all of
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: these big dreams and I just had nobody whatsoever that
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: took me under their wing and mentored me and said, Sean,
- 1:17:32Speaker 5: you can make it out of this Bronx. Not because
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: they didn't want to, but they never made it out
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: the Bronx. They never knew nobody who made it out
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: the Bronx.
- 1:17:42Speaker 3: And as I was.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Sitting there and finally, you know, and this is the
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: longest story, I won't even go into it, but when
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: I finally started to answer the call, you know again,
- 1:17:54Speaker 5: it's trust the process. I was listening to these guys
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: to motivate me and to provide direction in education and
- 1:18:04Speaker 5: tell me, Sean, you can do it. I said, I
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: got to become the mentor that I never had to
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: because there's South Bronxes.
- 1:18:13Speaker 3: All over this world.
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: You know, we are from a very poor borough in
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: New York City. The South Bronx is the Bay Route,
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: like that is the poorest borough. But there's South Bronxes
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: in Michigan, There's South Bronxs, you know, in California. It's
- 1:18:31Speaker 5: all over the world. And I and I felt like
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: it was my responsibility.
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: I did it.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: Maybe I can impact somebody's life and become that mentor
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: that I never had.
- 1:18:45Speaker 3: And that's what set me on the journey.
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: So right now you're speaking like to company schools, Like,
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: how does that work?
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: Well, I speak to companies, I speak to schools, I
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: speak on Instagram Live, I speak wherever I can, wherever
- 1:19:03Speaker 5: my voice can be heard. And I do it because
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: a lot of companies need people like me to come
- 1:19:11Speaker 5: in and rally the troops up. A lot of schools
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: need people like me to come in and speak to
- 1:19:18Speaker 5: the students and show them that this is greater than
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: a degree, because I know a lot of people who
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: have degrees, who are broke, who are unemployed, who ain't
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: figured it out. So I come in and I try
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: to speak to these students that, look, the paper is
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: one thing, but God gave you gifts that only you possess.
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: And I'm a firm believer in this. And maybe this
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: is where my cockiness and my ego comes into play.
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: But even when I was this intern, like I told y'all,
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: I knew couldn't nobody mess with me. But looking back
- 1:19:56Speaker 5: on it, it's because I all too me, Like we
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: all have these individual gifts that we have that make
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: us us. It is our own secret sauce. And if
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: you just tap into what your secret sauce, with your gift,
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: with the thing that you do better than anybody else
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: without trying at all, you have no choice but to win,
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: no choice.
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: So they can jack the swag, But the sauce is
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: so separately there you you know what I'm saying, and
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: that I mean, the Power move Makers is inspiring. I
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: watched a few of them, man, and one of the
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: clips that caught my attention, Man, they really grabbed me.
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: It was like, yes, you love Yankee Johnson, Yes you
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: love every the hip hop appreciator. But you said, Yo,
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: I'm coming for the crown, no question. That's the only
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: reason I'm getting in this thing. I want to be
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: the best. And if you not focus and have laser focus,
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: that's your key word right there, laser focus.
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: You shouldn't do it at all. You'll talk about that
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: little bit. Yeah, you know, maybe maybe you know.
- 1:20:59Speaker 5: I'm born to a alcoholic father, right And like I said,
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: I didn't have any mentors. My grandfather was the closest
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: thing to a mentor I had, but he never made
- 1:21:12Speaker 5: it further than the Bronx and down south. But he
- 1:21:16Speaker 5: taught me to be a man. But one of the
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: things he instilled in me was work, ethic and what
- 1:21:24Speaker 5: it was to become a man. And if you put
- 1:21:27Speaker 5: your mind to something, you go all out for it.
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: And for me, even now that I'm doing this speaking,
- 1:21:36Speaker 5: you think I'm worried about anybody else but eric An
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: Incy everybody else? Is it just in my way, Like, yo,
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: I'm not worried about Like, I don't care if y'all
- 1:21:48Speaker 5: making more money than me. Speaking right now, I don't
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: care if you got a bigger name than me, you
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: ain't in the top spot. I'm only focused on the
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: top spot. And would all do respect because I love
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: you know. I ain't never met Eric yet, I never
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: talked to him, but Inky is my guy, and with
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: all due respect, I'm coming for the crown.
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: It's as simple as that. I got the new campaign.
- 1:22:13Speaker 3: I wrote it the crown or nothing. The crown, Oh,
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: just a crown and nothing. I like that. You are
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: marketing guy up. You need to come on over. The
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: power moves.
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: Crown and nothing. That's that's there you have.
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: I'm putting the world on notice, like like you got
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: to speak this thing into existence. You think I'm doing
- 1:22:32Speaker 5: this to be number two. You think I'm doing this
- 1:22:35Speaker 5: to stand next to somebody else. But those two dudes, like,
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: no way, it's it's not even a And here's another
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: thing because again you know, and the color kind of
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: goes to your point where you were talking about the
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: differences between the black DJs and the white DJs. Those
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: guys are powerful those guys saved my life. But Tony
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: Robbins and so many of those other guys, I'm making
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: quadrant that makes so much more funny than those guys.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: So you know, I know I'm calling out inky in
- 1:23:14Speaker 3: them because.
- 1:23:16Speaker 5: I do these dudes like like, I am such a
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: fan of these guys. But truth of the matter is,
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: I'm really coming for Tony and I'm gonna bring something
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: to this game that they ain't never seen before. They're
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: like like like they they haven't seen it yet. So
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: when when?
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: When? When?
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: When it's my time and I got the crown, I'm
- 1:23:36Speaker 5: gonna make inspirational and motivational speaking something so different and
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: I am going how did Jay say it, I'm overcharging.
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: I'm overcharging them for what they did the inky in
- 1:23:52Speaker 3: my years that you hold.
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: There you go, fact ladies. Man Sean, it's been a pleasure.
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: How can the people contact you out? What's your social
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: media handles? And you got a podcast is too?
- 1:24:08Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: So any information you want to let the people know.
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: Yes, First I want to let the people know that
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: I am so proud of you guys. I thank you
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: guys for what you are doing for our community. I
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: thank you guys. For the light that you are shining
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: on people who look like us, who talk like us,
- 1:24:25Speaker 5: who come from the same environments and hoods as us.
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: I applaud y'all, and I'm saying this sincerely. I'm not
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: saying it because I'm here. I'm saying it sincerely. You
- 1:24:37Speaker 5: guys are bringing something special to this world, and it's
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: so needed. It is education, and you were really shining
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: a wonderful spotlight on once upon a time you in
- 1:24:52Speaker 5: order to make it out the hood. You thought you
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: had to dribble of basketball. You thought you had to
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: write a rap, You thought you had to go in
- 1:24:59Speaker 5: the studio beats. Y'all are showing people. I don't have
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: those kind of tailants. I can't make a beat if
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: somebody put it in my head, I can't make a beat.
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: I can't write a rap. But y'all have created this
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: wonderful platform, and you know I'm following behind y'all. I
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: have a very similar platform called Power move Makers, and
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: I'm shining a light on a lot of the individuals
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: that you guys have on this show. And I want
- 1:25:31Speaker 5: to again have people come onto my platform and give
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: back and become the mentors and the educators to our
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: communities that just like I didn't have these people, maybe
- 1:25:44Speaker 5: they don't have them in their life. So that's number one.
- 1:25:47Speaker 5: Find me at on YouTube at Power move Makers and
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: everything else is Power move Press at Power Moves and

- 1:26:42Speaker 6: The energy out there felt different. What changed for the
- 1:26:44Speaker 6: team today?
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: It was the new game day scratches from the California
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: Lottery players, everything.
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: Those games sent the team's energy through the roof.
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: Are you saying it was the off field play that
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: made the difference on the field.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: Hey, little play makes your day, and today it made
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: the game. That's all for.
- 1:26:58Speaker 6: Now played the new Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco forty
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: nine ers and Los Angeles Rams scratchers from the California Lottery.
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: A little play can make your day. Peace play responsibly.
