Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Alright, we are live. Guys, this is not a typical show.
- 0:05Speaker 1: If you have not seen the news, you know what,
- 0:06Speaker 1: let me take that banner off. It's not appropriate for
- 0:09Speaker 1: this moment. Guys, if you have not seen the news, unfortunately,
- 0:14Speaker 1: we got the news earlier today. Captain Picard, Patrick Stewart,
- 0:19Speaker 1: has passed away. He sounds like he had a bout
- 0:25Speaker 1: of some sort of dementia, is what I read.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it sounds like quick onset.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:33Speaker 2: All those timers.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah, he was 86 years old. Yeah, it was apparently
- 0:39Speaker 1: a quick progression for the illness, and he has passed.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We got the news, but I got it like right
- 0:47Speaker 1: around noon today.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's 8 o'clock my time right now, and I
- 0:53Speaker 2: probably found out about it about two hours ago. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 1: So, you know, we wanted to come on here, let
- 1:03Speaker 1: you know about that, talk a little bit about it,
- 1:06Speaker 1: maybe talk a little bit about, you know, I mean,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we're a Star Trek podcast, right? Like Patrick Stewart was
- 1:11Speaker 1: a huge influence on all of us. I know Dan
- 1:17Speaker 1: had mentioned we were talking to the group chat and
- 1:20Speaker 1: this is, you know, a big one, especially for all
- 1:23Speaker 1: of us. But Dan was saying for him as well.
- 1:26Speaker 1: um you know he's a beloved captain he's a he's
- 1:28Speaker 1: a beloved actor you know shoot they made a show
- 1:32Speaker 1: about his his return right start right yeah yeah for
- 1:35Speaker 1: multiple seasons right he he they didn't do that for
- 1:39Speaker 1: kirk you know what i mean like they right no
- 1:42Speaker 1: yeah yeah he is a beloved beloved actor so you.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Know a lot of us started out um On Next Gen.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You know, that was my first experience with Star Trek.
- 1:53Speaker 2: And basically, the first episode that I actually remember sort
- 1:57Speaker 2: of paying attention to was The Best of Both Worlds.
- 2:00Speaker 2: And you don't get much more of a Patrick Stewart-centered
- 2:04Speaker 2: episode than that.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Right, right.
- 2:08Speaker 2: And, you know, I'm the type of person that I
- 2:12Speaker 2: take my life lessons from places just like everybody else does.
- 2:16Speaker 2: But one of the places I take them from is from...
- 2:19Speaker 2: from some of these character role models, you know, these
- 2:21Speaker 2: fictional character models and, and Captain Picard, you know, um,
- 2:25Speaker 2: is he's, he's a role model, you know, I.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Mean, right.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Captain Picard day. Yeah. He's a role.
- 2:31Speaker 1: He is a role model for sure.
- 2:33Speaker 2: You know, he, he stood for everything that was, you know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: honesty and integrity and professionalism and stoicism. And, uh, Patrick
- 2:42Speaker 2: Stewart just, you know, did such a wonderful job, uh,
- 2:46Speaker 2: portray portraying all those, uh, qualities.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm trying to get the article up and of course
- 2:51Speaker 1: I get hit with the pop-up.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So yeah, not only Star Trek, the other big sort
- 2:58Speaker 2: of comic book-y, nerdy thing, he revolutionized the character of
- 3:04Speaker 2: Charles Xavier. And when you look back at 1999 when
- 3:09Speaker 2: X-Men came out or 2000 when X-Men came out, to
- 3:12Speaker 2: this day, we can't imagine anybody else playing Professor X. No,
- 3:17Speaker 2: he is. He is Professor X. He is.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 2: So such a wonderful, wonderful actor, classically trained, knighted by
- 3:27Speaker 2: Queen Elizabeth. So, sir, Patrick Stewart.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, he it's not just Star Trek.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It's not just X-Men. Like this guy had just such
- 3:36Speaker 1: a robust career, you know, and it's weird talking about
- 3:40Speaker 1: him in the past tense.
- 3:42Speaker 2: It is.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, the outpouring of memorials have been going
- 3:50Speaker 1: all around. I've seen it everywhere. Like, every major Star
- 3:52Speaker 1: Trek actor has posted their remembrances of him and how
- 3:56Speaker 1: great he was and how much they loved him. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and so this is the article I saw when I
- 4:03Speaker 1: first saw the news was the Hollywood Reporter. So they're
- 4:08Speaker 1: one of the industry standard magazines or websites, so.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well, nowadays, once I saw the first report, I'm like, well, it's,
- 4:18Speaker 2: it's 2026. Let's make sure that this isn't, you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: a hoax or anything else. But once I saw it
- 4:24Speaker 2: on like my local news channel and things like that.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So, um, yeah, it's just like when I first saw
- 4:31Speaker 1: the news, I, I thought it was a joke. Honestly,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I was like, no, this what's going on here. And then,
- 4:37Speaker 1: then you read it and he, and he's gone and it's,
- 4:39Speaker 1: it's awful.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Um, Yeah, the Instagram feed and the Facebook feed, like,
- 4:46Speaker 1: all of our social medias have been inundated with people, like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: just at a loss for words. Because the other thing, too,
- 4:53Speaker 1: is it's not just Patrick Stewart. We also lost.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Walter Koenig.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, Walter Koenig earlier this week.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Two Star Trek giants gone.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 3: You know?
- 5:04Speaker 2: This has been a... It's a lot to process, you know?
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Not just as a star Trek fan, but you know, I, I,
- 5:11Speaker 2: I'm a fan, I'm a fan of everything this guy did.
- 5:14Speaker 2: You know, I, we were just talking, my family and
- 5:16Speaker 2: I about, uh, you know, Christmas movies and, and, uh,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Scrooge movies. And I'm like, you know, he did a,
- 5:21Speaker 2: he did a, uh, a Christmas Carol, uh, movie. I, I,
- 5:26Speaker 2: we're going to rewatch that, uh, this Christmas. So yeah. Uh,
- 5:30Speaker 2: Moby Dick, um, you know, like we said, he was
- 5:33Speaker 2: classically trained. He did a lot of Shakespeare, um, theater, um, But, yeah,
- 5:39Speaker 2: I think a next-gen rewatch is in my future now
- 5:42Speaker 2: because there's so many great quotes from Captain Picard. It
- 5:49Speaker 2: is possible to make no mistakes and still lose.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It's funny. I thought driving home from work, I'm like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I need to watch something with Patrick Stewart tonight. I've
- 6:00Speaker 1: got to find something. I don't know what.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You know.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Maybe a... 90 X-Men movies and all those. Yeah, something.
- 6:09Speaker 2: 179 episodes of Next Generation.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, the emoji movie, I don't know.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Right, yeah. Yeah, yeah. American Dad.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Charlie's Angels. The guy had an extensive career.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Just all over the place. Yeah, yeah. And he wasn't
- 6:27Speaker 2: always serious. Like I said, he did American Dad up
- 6:30Speaker 2: until I think currently. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Well, shoot, he's going to be in Doomsday. That's just
- 6:36Speaker 1: around the corner.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Right, right. So that's going to be interesting. Oh, man.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Yeah, that's going to be rough, man.
- 6:44Speaker 2: We'll talk more about it on Sunday.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Once we've sort of processed this.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Jacob is waiting to talk to us, too. He
- 6:53Speaker 1: wants to come on and share his thoughts. So let's
- 6:55Speaker 1: bring him on for a few minutes and let him
- 6:56Speaker 1: share his thoughts. Absolutely.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Hey, Jacob.
- 6:59Speaker 3: What's up, buddy?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Good.
- 7:00Speaker 1: How are you doing, man?
- 7:02Speaker 3: Too many deaths in one week.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yep.
- 7:05Speaker 1: That's what we were saying.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Too many doomsdays. Yeah. No pun intended.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Right. Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Well, I take it you're a next-gen fan. Right, Jacob?
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah. I was just about to leave work right before
- 7:21Speaker 3: 4 o'clock. My dad hit me up and was like, yo,
- 7:24Speaker 3: Patrick Stewart just died. I'm like, no, he didn't. And
- 7:29Speaker 3: I looked it up. I looked it up. Everybody's like, nah,
- 7:31Speaker 3: this is a hoax. And I'm telling my buddy, Andrew,
- 7:34Speaker 3: I'm telling all my other buddies, I'm like, yo, Patrick
- 7:36Speaker 3: Stewart just died. He's like, yo, I heard about it.
- 7:38Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm already going through it. I'm not depressing
- 7:40Speaker 3: as it is.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Well, hi, Alex.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I'm watching Rick and Morty right now just to get
- 7:45Speaker 3: over it.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 1: It's rough. It's not, you know. He was eight years old,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but still, you didn't expect this.
- 7:54Speaker 3: I was talking to my dad earlier. I was like,
- 7:57Speaker 3: Me and my dad was talking earlier. I hope Sulu
- 7:59Speaker 3: and Kirk can reconcile because those are the only original
- 8:02Speaker 3: OGs left.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:05Speaker 3: They don't get along at all.
- 8:08Speaker 1: They do not.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I met Walter Koenig two years ago at the Grand
- 8:14Speaker 2: Rapids Comic Con.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Oh, nice.
- 8:18Speaker 2: I put up a link to the YouTube video of
- 8:21Speaker 2: that whole panel. You can hear me talking You can
- 8:27Speaker 2: hear me ask my famous question to him at minute
- 8:30Speaker 2: 27 if you want to look at that video. But, yeah,
- 8:34Speaker 2: it's been a sad week for Star Trek.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Yeah. My dad met Tosca Yar once at a Star
- 8:40Speaker 3: Trek convention years ago.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Oh, really? Oh, really? Okay. Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Years ago. It was at a Greensboro convention long ago.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I got what William Shatner posted. He says, it's been
- 8:52Speaker 1: a heartbreaking week. What a heartbreaking week this has been.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, colleague, and magnificent actor.
- 8:59Speaker 1: From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he
- 9:02Speaker 1: brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humility to
- 9:05Speaker 1: everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and so did the man that played him.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Amen.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Alex says he was going to watch Dave tonight. Now
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm feeling it's time for some Next Gen. Yeah, I
- 9:20Speaker 2: think that's how we all feel.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I'm about to re-watch Picard again. Yeah, there you go.
- 9:25Speaker 3: You brought it to me, I.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just.
- 9:31Speaker 1: It's tough, man. It's tough.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Like my dad says, celebrities die in threes.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I saw a lot of people on my social media,
- 9:40Speaker 1: or on the social media for the show, say that they...
- 9:45Speaker 1: It was like Dolly Parton and now Patrick Stewart. Like,
- 9:48Speaker 1: as far as.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah. We need to check on all the Voyager and
- 9:54Speaker 2: DS9 crew. Yeah.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Scott doing? How's Scott doing since his dad and now Picard?
- 10:07Speaker 2: Danny? Dan.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Yeah, Dan. Dan, yeah.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, he's as good as can be expected.
- 10:13Speaker 1: I know he wanted to be here for the stream,
- 10:15Speaker 1: but he had to work.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So... So, yeah, he's got prior commitments, too,
- 10:21Speaker 2: for Sunday, so he won't be able to come Sunday.
- 10:23Speaker 2: But Dan will be back soon.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And now with the card gone, you know, I can
- 10:27Speaker 3: only imagine.
- 10:29Speaker 2: It's, yeah, it's just people are, life is so fragile
- 10:32Speaker 2: and fleeting, so.
- 10:33Speaker 3: I know.
- 10:34Speaker 1: We're getting so many comments in the Instagram.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Me and my ex broke up way back in February,
- 10:41Speaker 3: so this year has not been that good.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you've had a rough year. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Yeah, we dated almost two years, but, you know, thanks
- 10:53Speaker 3: to Star Trek, I've been dealing with it. I just
- 10:54Speaker 3: haven't said much about it, but I'm starting to open
- 10:58Speaker 3: up more.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You know, that's one of the things that Star Trek
- 11:03Speaker 2: can do for a lot of people is it gets
- 11:06Speaker 2: you through a lot of rough times. I mean, you know,
- 11:08Speaker 2: when I was overseas, you know, and just away from
- 11:10Speaker 2: my family and friends.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Thank you for serving. I got a family that served
- 11:14Speaker 3: in the Marines, so thank you.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Appreciate that appreciate that thank them for their service and
- 11:19Speaker 2: star trek was a big part of getting me through
- 11:21Speaker 2: that i mean i would i would go to the
- 11:23Speaker 2: local shops and and get uh seasons of like d
- 11:25Speaker 2: space nine and just watch the same you know in
- 11:30Speaker 2: 22 episodes over and over and over again so star
- 11:35Speaker 2: trek definitely i think has a healing quality you know
- 11:38Speaker 2: with its message you.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Know yeah uh what Me and my ex, we dated
- 11:43Speaker 3: for almost two years, and we broke up in February,
- 11:46Speaker 3: and that was right around the time I started coming
- 11:48Speaker 3: on to the podcast more. I just wanted to point
- 11:54Speaker 3: out that this is the only podcast I've ever actually
- 11:56Speaker 3: been on.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Oh, nice.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Well, we appreciate you being a listener and coming on.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I listened to Star Wars Podcast 2, Rebel Force Radio.
- 12:08Speaker 3: They just celebrated their 20th anniversary.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I don't know if y'all been watching Vision Quest, but
- 12:13Speaker 3: we got a Star Trek star on Vision Quest.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yep.
- 12:17Speaker 1: You have Todd Stachowski.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Oh, and I can't think of her name.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah, the Romulan, yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 2: The Romulan, yep. I'm sure once Vision Quest is over with,
- 12:30Speaker 2: I think we'll do a review.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll do something.
- 12:34Speaker 3: The Captain Shaw was actually on a Rebel Force Radio
- 12:39Speaker 3: podcast And he's actually a huge nerd.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Oh, I know.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I follow him on social media.
- 12:45Speaker 3: He's been in a lot of stuff. If you look
- 12:47Speaker 3: up Rebel Forth Radio, he was on the last podcast,
- 12:51Speaker 3: I think maybe a couple weeks ago. Yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a fan. He's a fan of all that stuff.
- 12:57Speaker 3: He's a huge fan. He's such a nice guy.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I met him last year at the Chicago Star
- 13:04Speaker 2: Trek convention.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Oh, you met him?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Oh, nice. All right, Jacob. We're going to give some
- 13:11Speaker 1: space for other people to come on as well.
- 13:13Speaker 3: All right, cool. Y'all take care and go ball as well. Thanks, Jacob.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Thank you. Okay.
- 13:17Speaker 3: Yeah, so we're getting a lot of people in the
- 13:19Speaker 3: Instagram as well just saying, you.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Know, here's Radish Trek TNG made me a Star Trek
- 13:38Speaker 1: fan for 30 years. Picard means a great deal to me.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Let's see another one. AJ says he had a unique
- 13:46Speaker 1: way of diplomacy with the Borg and protecting data. He
- 13:49Speaker 1: deserves the Intergalactic Nobel Prize. I mean, I don't know
- 13:55Speaker 1: if that's the thing, but yeah, I'm down for that
- 13:57Speaker 1: if that happened.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 2: All right. So I was looking at something Alex said.
- 14:01Speaker 2: He goes, so that final next-gen movie he was open
- 14:04Speaker 2: to doing won't happen. Yeah. I didn't even realize that
- 14:08Speaker 2: that was, like, a thought.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I think it's one of those things they always say, like, yeah, maybe.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 2: That would be great. But season three of Picard was
- 14:16Speaker 2: the swan song. Yeah, season three of Picard was the
- 14:19Speaker 2: swan song. Might have to.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Re-watch Picard again. Yeah.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. I wasn't expecting that. You know,
- 14:29Speaker 2: sometimes with these celebrities, it's, it's, you get more of
- 14:32Speaker 2: a warning, like, you know, so-and-so was admitted to the hospital.
- 14:35Speaker 2: They have pneumonia.
- 14:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:37Speaker 2: And a week later they pass away and you're like, okay,
- 14:39Speaker 2: it's sort of a, it's almost like a, it's a,
- 14:41Speaker 2: it's a shock, but almost like a weight's been lifted
- 14:44Speaker 2: off you. Like finally you have some, you know, finality
- 14:47Speaker 2: to it. But with this, it's like, you know, I, I,
- 14:50Speaker 2: I woke up and I, you know, I grabbed my phone,
- 14:52Speaker 2: I turned my light on. I'm about ready to, you know,
- 14:54Speaker 2: go into the bathroom and do what people do when
- 14:56Speaker 2: they wake up and, I turned my phone on, just
- 14:59Speaker 2: clicked on Facebook, and the first thing I can see
- 15:02Speaker 2: out of one eye is, wait, what? Man, it's a
- 15:05Speaker 2: shock to your system.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I was looking at all, just how many people
- 15:10Speaker 1: posted about his passing, like actors that have worked with him, directors, writers,
- 15:15Speaker 1: all these people, and I get the feeling this was
- 15:19Speaker 1: a pretty known secret. It just wasn't given out.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah, because there was a lot of, Tribute's ready to go. Yeah.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 1: So, yeah, I think people knew. And they gave him
- 15:35Speaker 1: his space, which is good. That's something in private that
- 15:39Speaker 1: he needed, you know.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he is. He survived by. He was married a
- 15:45Speaker 2: few times.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:47Speaker 2: But he's survived by his wife, Sunny Ozel.
- 15:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:54Speaker 2: So he was married to Wendy Noss. Noose and Sheila Falconer.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 15:59Speaker 2: It says here he was active from 1959 to this year. Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 2: He was born in July 13th, 1940 in Muirfield, which
- 16:11Speaker 2: is in a subsection of West Riding of Yorkshire in England,
- 16:17Speaker 2: which is a perfect English name for a town. Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 2: He was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Mm-hmm. Yeah,
- 16:26Speaker 2: he is definitely going to be missed. Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 1: It says he died Wednesday at his home. I mean,
- 16:33Speaker 1: so yesterday.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Oh, so he died yesterday.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, Wednesday it says.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So the news just came out today.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, we'll definitely talk about it on Sunday. Yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll have more on Sunday.
- 16:52Speaker 1: But yeah, I think this is a good spot to
