- 1:55All right, so welcome everyone to another episode
- 1:59of the ever-popular Inspirations for Your Live
- 2:01Show.
- 2:01Who am I?
- 2:02Great question.
- 2:02I'm John C.
- 2:04Morley.
- 2:04I'm a serial entrepreneur.
- 2:05I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 2:07host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner, graduate
- 2:11student at Montclair State University, and so grateful
- 2:14now to be a published author.
- 2:17Hey, folks, have you ever noticed how something
- 2:20can be completely over in your life, but
- 2:23it's still running inside your mind?
- 2:25You ever get that?
- 2:26Yep.
- 2:26You replay the conversation.
- 2:28You rethink what happened.
- 2:30You imagine different responses.
- 2:31You search for, well, an explanation you somehow
- 2:36missed.
- 2:38Today isn't about pretending the past didn't matter.
- 2:42No.
- 2:43It's about recognizing when thinking stops helping and
- 2:47starts keeping you connected to something you cannot
- 2:50change.
- 2:51So let's get right into it with my
- 2:5330 points.
- 2:54One, your brain can replay something long after
- 2:59life moved on from it.
- 3:01Life may have continued while your mind keeps
- 3:04returning to one moment.
- 3:06Recognizing that difference is important.
- 3:09Something doesn't have to still be happening for
- 3:11us to continue experiencing the emotionality.
- 3:14And I think that's an important thing for
- 3:17us to all realize that that is what
- 3:22it's about.
- 3:23And hopefully that matters to you guys and
- 3:27that that'll make a big point for you.
- 3:29All right.
- 3:29So number two, stop confusing repetition with resolution.
- 3:35Thinking about something repeatedly can feel productive because
- 3:39your brain is busy, but activity isn't always
- 3:42progress, guys.
- 3:44Ask whether another replay is actually teaching you
- 3:46anything new.
- 3:48Number three, another replay won't produce a different
- 3:53ending.
- 3:54You can reconstruct a conversation a hundred different
- 3:59ways, but the original conversation remains unchanged.
- 4:03Eventually, you have to stop trying to create
- 4:06a different ending, mentally, that is.
- 4:10So number four, notice your mental reruns.
- 4:15Pay attention to what your mind automatically plays
- 4:18again, again, again.
- 4:20Certain conversations, mistakes, disappointments, and questions may appear
- 4:24repeatedly.
- 4:25Awareness helps you recognize the pattern before automatically
- 4:28following through on it.
- 4:29But I think that's something, again, that a
- 4:31lot of people miss.
- 4:32They miss that whole point, right?
- 4:35These are important things I think a lot
- 4:38of people don't realize.
- 4:41But I think these are things that we
- 4:42all need to understand.
- 4:44And what I mean by that is these
- 4:46are things that we have to be thinking
- 4:48about.
- 4:49So let's think about this together, OK?
- 4:52Number five, interrupt the story before it consumes
- 4:54your attention.
- 4:55When the replay begins, interrupt it.
- 4:59You don't need to fight the thought or
- 5:00pretend it isn't there.
- 5:02Recognize it, then deliberately move your attention somewhere
- 5:05more useful.
- 5:07Number six, stop asking questions that no longer
- 5:10have useful answers.
- 5:12Why did they do it?
- 5:14What were they thinking?
- 5:16What if you had responded differently?
- 5:17Some questions eventually stop producing useful information.
- 5:21Know when you're going to be at a
- 5:24point and it's reached.
- 5:27Number seven, some closure has to come from
- 5:30you, right, not other people.
- 5:33We often imagine closure arriving from another person,
- 5:35though as an apology or possibly an explanation.
- 5:39Sometimes it does.
- 5:41Other times you have to decide for yourself
- 5:43that the chapter is already finished and done.
- 5:47Number eight, you may never receive the explanation
- 5:50you wanted.
- 5:52That's difficult, but it's possible.
- 5:55Number eight, somebody may never explain themselves in
- 5:57a way that satisfies you.
- 6:00Your future cannot remain dependent on receiving an
- 6:03answer.
- 6:05They may never provide.
- 6:07Number nine, stop waiting for perfect closure.
- 6:12I know I was guilty of this a
- 6:13long time ago.
- 6:15Stop waiting for the perfect closure.
- 6:17I think that's a very important thing to
- 6:20understand.
- 6:22Closure rarely arrives wrapped neatly with every question
- 6:26answered.
- 6:27Sometimes moving forward means accepting an important ending
- 6:31rather than waiting indefinitely for a perfect one.
- 6:34Number 10, accept unanswered questions without becoming trapped
- 6:39by them.
- 6:40And I think that's a thing that a
- 6:41lot of people today, I think they miss
- 6:43that whole concept, right?
- 6:45An unanswered question can exist without becoming the
- 6:49center of your life.
- 6:50You can say, I don't know why that
- 6:53happened and still decide to continue forward.
- 6:56Number 11, your mind needs somewhere new to
- 7:00go.
- 7:01Number 11, simply telling yourself not to think
- 7:05about something often isn't enough.
- 7:09Give your attention another destination, a goal, a
- 7:12project, a relationship, a skill, or challenge that
- 7:17can provide somewhere productive that you'll be able
- 7:19to direct it.
- 7:20Number 12, replace rumination with deliberate action.
- 7:26Ooh, that's a real good one, guys.
- 7:28When you notice yourself circling, and this can
- 7:30happen, same thought, around and around, do something
- 7:35intentional, right?
- 7:37Exercise, organize, create work, learn, or make a
- 7:40decision there and then.
- 7:43Movement can interrupt mental repetition.
- 7:47So don't be afraid of doing that.
- 7:50Know it's going to be a little bit
- 7:51different.
- 7:52And when it's different, that's when life actually
- 7:54changes, okay?
- 7:58That's the most important thing.
- 8:00Your life can change in an instant, but
- 8:04you've got to be willing to make that
- 8:07choice.
- 8:08Number 13, stop revisiting the scene every time
- 8:12you're alone.
- 8:15Quiet moments can invite old memories back.
- 8:19Notice when being alone automatically becomes an invitation
- 8:22to revisit the same event.
- 8:24Your quiet time can serve you differently.
- 8:27Number 14, create something stronger to focus on.
- 8:33Don't only try to eliminate an old thought.
- 8:36Build something meaningful enough to compete for your
- 8:39attention.
- 8:40Give yourself something ahead of you that's worth
- 8:43thinking about.
- 8:44You control what receives today's attention.
- 8:47You won't control every thought that appears, but
- 8:50you have influence over what you continue feeding.
- 8:53Attention is a resource.
- 8:56Become more selective about where you invest it.
- 8:59That's key, guys.
- 9:00But some people today, they don't realize where
- 9:04they're putting their attention.
- 9:05And then they're wondering, well, why is this
- 9:07happening this way?
- 9:08Why am I going this way?
- 9:10Why am I floundering, right?
- 9:13I think that's a very important thing for
- 9:16us to realize.
- 9:20And these are important things for us all
- 9:22to be aware of in our life.
- 9:23You might say, well, John, this doesn't happen
- 9:25to me.
- 9:26But I'm here to tell you, it does
- 9:27happen to you.
- 9:29You're doing it whether you're aware of it
- 9:31or not.
- 9:32And I think that's the most important thing
- 9:34for us to be aware of.
- 9:36So number 15, you control what receives today's
- 9:39attention.
- 9:41How do I do that?
- 9:43Real simple.
- 9:44You want to know the secret?
- 9:45I'm going to share it with you.
- 9:46You won't control every thought that appears.
- 9:49But you have influence over what you continue
- 9:51feeding.
- 9:52Attention is a resource.
- 9:54Become more selective about where you invest it.
- 9:57And I think when we're more selective of
- 9:59our thoughts, things change in our life, OK?
- 10:03That's an important piece, guys.
- 10:06That's a very important piece.
- 10:11You won't control every thought, right?
- 10:13But you have influence over what you continue
- 10:15feeding.
- 10:17You've got to be selective.
- 10:19Number 16, stop letting a five-minute event
- 10:22occupy five years, right?
- 10:24I just need five minutes of your time.
- 10:27But you and I both know it's not
- 10:28really going to be five minutes.
- 10:29It's going to be 5, 10, or 20
- 10:31hours.
- 10:35Sometimes the emotional lifespan of an event becomes
- 10:37far greater than the event itself.
- 10:41Ask whether you're continuing to give something more
- 10:44time than it deserves, right?
- 10:48That's important.
- 10:50And you might be saying to me, John,
- 10:52well, this isn't happening to me.
- 10:53But denial is not a river in Egypt.
- 11:01Number 17, memory can inform you without imprisoning
- 11:06you.
- 11:10That's an important thing, guys.
- 11:13Memory is valuable.
- 11:14It helps all of us each day recognize
- 11:17patterns and make wiser decisions.
- 11:19Use the memory as information rather than allowing
- 11:22it to become a place where you continually
- 11:25live.
- 11:27And I think sometimes we're expecting something, but
- 11:31we're not willing to let something new into
- 11:33our lives.
- 11:34That's a big problem for a lot of
- 11:35people, right?
- 11:37Number 18, learn what needs to be learned.
- 11:41Ask what the experience taught you.
- 11:43Maybe you need stronger boundaries, better communication, greater
- 11:48awareness, or different expectations.
- 11:50Take the useful lesson with you.
- 11:52And I've said before, when you learn something,
- 11:55don't be captive to the whole thing, right?
- 11:58Realize what the lesson is, take the lesson,
- 12:00and then move on, guys.
- 12:03Move on.
- 12:05Move on.
- 12:06Because that's the whole key, guys, is moving
- 12:10on, right?
- 12:12That's the whole thing.
- 12:13We can move on.
- 12:14If we do, our life will change.
- 12:18And we have to throw away not everything,
- 12:21just the things that are bothering us.
- 12:23Just keep the lesson, right?
- 12:25Number 19, leave what doesn't need to follow
- 12:28you.
- 12:29Not everything deserves to come forward.
- 12:32Keep the wisdom, but consider leaving behind the
- 12:36endless questioning, imaginary conversations, anger, and need to
- 12:41rewrite what happened.
- 12:44What went on?
- 12:45How did this transpire, right?
- 12:49That's an important piece that a lot of
- 12:52people I just don't think understand, right?
- 12:56I don't think a lot of people get
- 12:58that.
- 12:58And the reason they don't get it is
- 13:00because they're too busy working on where they're
- 13:04going, right?
- 13:06I think that's an important thing that, again,
- 13:08many people just don't get it, right?
- 13:15And I will tell you that these are
- 13:21important things, guys.
- 13:23These are very, very important things for us
- 13:26to be aware of and know of, OK?
- 13:30But we have to be aware of these
- 13:33things, right?
- 13:35We have to be aware of these things.
- 13:37Why?
- 13:37OK, because of what's going on, OK?
- 13:44What's going on and what will happen?
- 13:51What's going on and what's going to happen?
- 13:55That's an important piece, guys.
- 13:58Very, very important piece.
- 14:00So number 20 is stop searching for another
- 14:02interpretation.
- 14:03Sometimes we keep changing the angle because we're
- 14:06hoping to find an interpretation that hurts less.
- 14:09Eventually, you may have understood enough.
- 14:12Another analysis isn't always another answer, guys.
- 14:15Number 21, sometimes what happened is simply what
- 14:20happened.
- 14:20Not every event contains a hidden explanation.
- 14:25Waiting to be discovered.
- 14:27Sometimes people make poor choices.
- 14:31Sometimes relationships end.
- 14:33Sometimes things don't work.
- 14:34Reality doesn't always prove a satisfying explanation.
- 14:37So we can't keep holding our head and
- 14:39saying, oh my gosh, what am I going
- 14:40to do?
- 14:40What am I going to do?
- 14:41What am I going to do?
- 14:42Let's focus on what we can do.
- 14:45I think that's probably one of the most
- 14:47important things for us to understand, OK?
- 14:53Let's think about that for a moment.
- 14:59Think about that for just a moment.
- 15:00And what does it mean?
- 15:03It means a lot, guys.
- 15:06It means a lot.
- 15:08But we've got to be open to these
- 15:10kinds of conversations.
- 15:13Number 22, your future doesn't need every answer
- 15:17from your past.
- 15:18You may think it does, but I'm here
- 15:20to tell you it doesn't.
- 15:22And you can learn in different ways, guys.
- 15:25You can learn in different ways every single
- 15:27day.
- 15:36That's an important thing.
- 15:45You don't need a complete investigation of yesterday
- 15:46before you're going to allow it to build
- 15:49tomorrow.
- 15:50There may always be unanswered questions.
- 15:52Your future can still move forward without you
- 15:54knowing the answer to every question of your
- 15:57past.
- 15:59And we put us into this, I'm going
- 16:03to say, enigma of what do I do
- 16:07all because I don't understand one thing, all
- 16:12right?
- 16:13And the one thing might be that you
- 16:15actually know something that maybe you don't know.
- 16:23I think a lot of people out there
- 16:25realize one thing, OK?
- 16:30And that one thing is this, right?
- 16:37That one thing is the fact that you
- 16:39can make this change in your life if
- 16:41you are open to it.
- 16:45Number 23, give yourself permission, guys, to stop
- 16:48investigating.
- 16:50You don't need to keep collecting evidence 24
- 16:52hours a day, checking old messages, replaying conversations
- 16:55in your head, or examining every detail.
- 16:57At some point, you can decide you've investigated
- 17:00enough, and I'm ready to move forward with
- 17:03my life.
- 17:06Are you OK with that answer?
- 17:07Or do you feel like you need to
- 17:09reverse engineer every thought from every person?
- 17:12That'll burn you out, guys.
- 17:15That will burn you out like you just
- 17:17don't understand.
- 17:18Number 24, stop looking backward for something that
- 17:22only exists ahead.
- 17:28That's important, guys, OK?
- 17:32Very important.
- 17:34The piece you're searching for may not be
- 17:39hidden somewhere in the past, OK?
- 17:44It may come from building enough of a
- 17:48future that the old experience stops dominating your
- 17:51attention.
- 17:52How's that for a concept?
- 17:55But when I tell people this, they're like,
- 17:56oh, John, I don't know if I want
- 17:58to believe that.
- 17:59OK.
- 18:00You can believe whatever you want to believe.
- 18:04But if you keep taking yourself down the
- 18:06same path and you're not getting any further,
- 18:08why would you want to keep doing that?
- 18:11That's just a question I have, OK?
- 18:15That's the big question I have for all
- 18:17of you.
- 18:25That's important.
- 18:31Very, very important.
- 18:37Number 25, closure can be a decision, right?
- 18:42Whether we're going to get it, or maybe
- 18:43we're not going to get the decision.
- 18:45That's very possible.
- 18:48Closure isn't something another person hands you.
- 18:52No.
- 18:52Sometimes closure is saying, I understand enough.
- 18:56I've learned enough.
- 18:57I've heard enough.
- 18:59I'm ready to stop giving this my energy
- 19:01anymore.
- 19:02There might be a time when somebody just
- 19:03doesn't respond to you.
- 19:05That might be the closure.
- 19:07It may not be the closure that you
- 19:09actually want to get, because you think you
- 19:14should be giving something else, like an apology,
- 19:17or a better reason.
- 19:29I think that's an important piece, something that
- 19:34maybe you just don't understand.
- 19:39And it's something that we've definitely got to
- 19:41think about, OK?
- 19:46Understand when enough is enough, or when you're
- 19:48not getting the feedback.
- 19:50Don't push for it.
- 19:52Number 26, decide when enough thinking is enough.
- 19:56Reflection has value, but it needs a stopping
- 19:58point, right?
- 20:00If you've asked the same questions repeatedly over
- 20:03and over again, and nothing new is emerging,
- 20:06give yourself permission to redirect your energy and
- 20:09your mind.
- 20:11You love yourself.
- 20:12Why are you putting yourself all this through
- 20:16persecution?
- 20:18Why?
- 20:27That's the whole thing I want to ask
- 20:28you.
- 20:28The question is, why?
- 20:37I think that's something that a lot of
- 20:39people, like, they don't necessarily get, OK?
- 20:45They don't necessarily get it.
- 20:55That's important, guys.
- 20:59We have to redirect our mind.
- 21:01Give yourself permission to redirect.
- 21:03Number 27, redirect yourself without denying what actually
- 21:08happened to you, or you experienced.
- 21:11Moving your attention forward isn't pretending the experiences
- 21:13didn't matter.
- 21:15You can acknowledge what happened honestly, while deciding
- 21:20it doesn't deserve unlimited access to your thoughts.
- 21:24And when you make the decision, hopefully you're
- 21:26going to be like, oh, wait a minute.
- 21:28Now I finally get this.
- 21:29Now I see why this is going that
- 21:31way, right?
- 21:35Number 28, the past cannot change, but your
- 21:38relationships with it can.
- 21:40This is where your power exists.
- 21:42You can't edit the event, but you can
- 21:45change how much attention it receives, what meaning
- 21:49you give it, and how much influence it
- 21:51has over your life.
- 21:52Remember, when you detach from something, it doesn't
- 21:54control you anymore.
- 21:56Throw away the event, but just keep the
- 21:58lesson if it's painful for you.
- 22:01Number 29, your attention belongs in your life
- 22:04right now, not later.
- 22:06Your life is happening now, this very moment.
- 22:08There are people, opportunities, goals, experiences, and possibilities
- 22:11around you right this very minute.
- 22:14Don't let something you cannot change consume the
- 22:16attention those things deserve, right?
- 22:20Number 30, guys, stop replaying what you cannot
- 22:24rewrite.
- 22:25That's the challenge I want to leave you
- 22:27with today.
- 22:28You can't mentally rehearse your way into a
- 22:30different past.
- 22:32At some point, another replay becomes another payment
- 22:36to something that's already taken enough from you.
- 22:40Think about what your mind keeps returning to.
- 22:43Is there a conversation?
- 22:45You continue rehearsing.
- 22:47An explanation you're still waiting for.
- 22:50A question you've already asked yourself hundreds of
- 22:53times.
- 22:54Maybe you know the answer, but you don't
- 22:56want to get that answer.
- 22:57So you keep saying, gee, is there another
- 22:58answer?
- 22:58Is there another answer?
- 22:59You know what the answer is.
- 23:00But you keep saying, gee, did it change?
- 23:02Did it change?
- 23:02No, it didn't change.
- 23:03Maybe you've learned everything that experience can teach
- 23:06you.
- 23:07You don't have to forget it.
- 23:08You don't have to pretend it didn't hurt.
- 23:11You don't need every unanswered question to suddenly
- 23:15just disappear.
- 23:16But you can focus on it less.
- 23:18Just keep the attention on what matters.
- 23:21Keep the attention only on the lesson.
- 23:24But you can decide that you've given it
- 23:26enough attention.
- 23:27Take the lesson.
- 23:29Keep the wisdom.
- 23:30Strengthen whatever needs strengthening.
- 23:32Then give your mind somewhere new to go.
- 23:35There's something powerful about realizing that closure doesn't
- 23:38always require another person's participation.
- 23:41Sometimes you close the door yourself because you're
- 23:45finally ready to use your energy somewhere else.
- 23:48And that's a very smart move when we
- 23:51choose to move on.
- 23:53You may get people say, oh, come on.
- 23:56Can't you handle it?
- 23:57No, you're making the right choice to put
- 24:00your energy somewhere else.
- 24:01See, ladies and gentlemen, your past cannot be
- 24:04rewritten, unfortunately.
- 24:05But your next decision hasn't been made yet.
- 24:10So you could change that.
- 24:11Your attention belongs in your life.
- 24:15Doesn't deserve to be floundering or putting you
- 24:19in some kind of precarious situation.
- 24:22Right?
- 24:25I think that's an important piece that a
- 24:27lot of people, again, don't realize.
- 24:35A lot of people don't realize what that
- 24:37means.
- 24:43They don't understand what that means and why
- 24:45that means something.
- 24:47I think that's something, again, a lot of
- 24:48people will say, gee, that's nice.
- 24:50But is it really what we want?
- 24:53And I think that's a big question for
- 24:55a lot of people to think about.
- 25:02Your attention, ladies and gentlemen, it belongs in
- 25:04your life.
- 25:04Don't let other circumstances, situations try to pull
- 25:08you away from that.
- 25:10Because people will.
- 25:11They will try to pull you away from
- 25:12it every single day because they think that's
- 25:15going to be the right thing.
- 25:17OK?
- 25:18They think that's going to be the way
- 25:20to go.
- 25:20They think if they manipulate you, that that's
- 25:25enough.
- 25:28OK?
- 25:30That's what they think it's about.
- 25:39I think that's an important piece for all
- 25:42of us to understand and what it actually
- 25:45means to us.
- 25:47Right?
- 25:50Right?
- 25:50That's very, very important, guys.
- 25:52Very, very important.
- 25:54Ladies and gentlemen, if you don't know who
- 25:55I am by now, allow me to reintroduce
- 25:57myself.
- 25:57I am John C.
- 25:58Morley.
- 25:58I'm a serial entrepreneur, author, and much more.
- 26:01And this has been another amazing, powerful episode
- 26:06of Inspirations for Your Life.
- 26:08I thank you so much for spending time
- 26:13with me today so we can share these
- 26:17great lessons where we can become better versions
- 26:20of ourselves every single day.
- 26:22I know we went over a lot.
- 26:24And I know you're saying, John, but it's
- 26:26in my head.
- 26:26I can't get it out.
- 26:27You can change what you're thinking about right
- 26:30now, guys.
- 26:32You can.
- 26:35I said your past cannot be rewritten.
- 26:37OK?
- 26:38But your next decision hasn't been made yet.
- 26:41And you can make it.
- 26:45And when we're thinking about this, I want
- 26:48you to know something really important.
- 26:50Stop replaying what you cannot rewrite.
- 26:53And start investing the time and energy into
- 26:57what you still can create.
- 26:58Because there's so much you can do and
- 27:01change with new stuff.
- 27:03Don't worry about the past because you can't
- 27:05change it.
- 27:08Let's focus on the things we can change
- 27:12and leaving our energy away from the things
- 27:14that we can't.
- 27:17Because when we see the little things we
- 27:18can change, we say, wait, I have a
- 27:20lot of power.
- 27:22But then when we look at things we
- 27:23can't change, we're like, wait a minute, I'm
- 27:24not powerful.
- 27:25It's how we put our perspective on something.
- 27:29Does that make sense to everybody?
- 27:30I hope it does.
- 27:32Because if you start approaching this in a
- 27:35very interesting way, you're gonna say, wait a
- 27:38minute, I have more power than I thought.
- 27:40And the truth, ladies and gentlemen, is you
- 27:41really do.
- 27:42You have more power than you thought.
- 27:45That's the real truth right here.
- 27:46You have more power than you thought.
- 27:50I'm gonna see you on another show real
- 27:51soon.
- 27:52Please do check out BelieveMeAchieved.com for more
- 27:55of my amazing, and of course, inspiring creations.
