- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: Hello everybody and welcome back to critically acclaimed the movie review podcast where we don't review movies My name is William Bibbiani.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oh wait, explosion My name is William Bibbiani.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_01]: I am a film critic guy right for the rap and everybody calls me babe.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Whitney Sybel I too am a film critic.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: I contribute to slash film quite a lot actually.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah very prolific
- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: And uh, I don't have a cute nickname.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: I don't need one.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_00]: Just write a lot.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: I got to write an article today about five underrated science fiction movies from the 1960s.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so that was kind of fun to try.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: What did well, what did you take deep?
- 0:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, um, it's, it's going up on slash film a couple days.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, it's going to get free.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_00]: Give me one gravy.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Give me, give me, give me one.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_00]: I started with Doris Wishman's nude on the moon.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: Gotta gotta get that one.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_00]: Gotta get Doris out, there we go.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_00]: There we go, Doris.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: Wouldn't let me do Lajette Tay because technically that's a short and they want feature films.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so it's really quite famous.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_00]: Right, it's not so, I'm like, I'm not gonna just play it at the age.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm not gonna just do that in one.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna choose Alphaville.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna go a little bit deeper, so I don't want it with new.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_00]: Betaville.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think there is a kids film called Betaville, actually.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Gammaville.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if there's a Gammaville.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's what we need to write as Gammaville.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, anyway, this is our podcast.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: This is with the host.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: We host a normally we do a lot of movie reviews.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_01]: And normally every year we do a podcast, Whitney and I, where we do a preview of the Oscars and we present our picks for what will win and what should win at the Oscars.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: And this year was one exception.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: This year Whitney got sick.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: This year Whitney had a really bad sore throat that he's not entirely over yet, actually.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: But I mean, you're better just the sore throat.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you can hear like, like, I'm well, but you can hear like the lingering crud.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I thought that frog, I had that for like most of January and early February.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I was only sick for like a week and then like, it just the frog wouldn't leave.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was a song.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm in Frog territory, but for the last couple of days, I was
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty miserable and I still have that like your limbs feel a little bit heavy I hate medicine and then just the sickness in general You need to sleep, but you can't it's so miserable.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: No, that's something like a wimpy dude.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no first off
- 2:27[SPEAKER_01]: the idea that if you take time off a work when you're sick, you're a wimpy dude, we have to eliminate them.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh no, it's a toxic place, I'm not going to work myself to death, yes, but my point is this, going to work when you're sick, bad idea and we're trying to be better about that, winning our bows and our forties and that's just something we can't do as heroicly as we used to.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: I used to be able to like stay up till 6 a.m. writing, sleep two hours and
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: write some more because that was the grind and I can't do that anymore but also you know you and I are schedules are different than they have been in the past we live further away we have more responsibilities and so we really only have a few windows every week in which to record so if we're sick
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: especially for like an episode that we can kind of only do in a brief window.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like there's like three days we can do this in and that's what if I'm sick during those three days.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_01]: Can't predict the Oscars now, but what we did do as a sort of an apology for that was if you had a don't over to our Patreon page, patreon.com slash critically acclaimed network, we released one of our newsletters in which we presented our predictions for what
- 3:37[SPEAKER_01]: will win and what also we thought should win so that there were the were on the public record and that article that newsletter is available to everyone even if you're not a subscriber this is a little treat to make sure everyone had a chance to access it go to patreon.com slash critically acclaimed network all-one word you can read that and if you subscribe for free you get a weekly newsletter every week
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: And you also get, uh, uh, uh, uh, you get the opportunity to see what else you're putting on up there.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_01]: And for maybe you want to, you want to bump up the tear and get a death for a dollar, uh, for a dollar a month.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: You get our episodes ad free, you get to vote in our polls, and you get higher up, you get free, uh, not pray, but you're paying for them.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_01]: But like, in more podcasts, that's a lot more podcasts.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: And a dollar, that doesn't even buy a gum ball these days, that's super cheap.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's a good deal.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I also, I was, this is, this is not an exact count, but when we post on our Patreon.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: We have tags, so I can make sure I can look at all the podcasts.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a podcast tag, right?
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: And we are perilously close if we have not already crossed it yet to 1,500 podcasts on that.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, all right.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: Which includes all of our, our hundreds of Star Trek podcasts, or many Batman episodes that are Patreon exclusives.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: And all of our regular episodes besides, but not all of our regular episodes besides.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: So we've long since blown past that, but we've definitely crossed it now.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so we we've got a lot there for you, but We do want to talk about the Oscars because we think the Oscars are fascinating and they're the industry revolves around them for Mostly we're some better.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: There are good things to come out of the Academy Awards There are people who get a major career boost.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: There are movies that some people might never hear of or see Had they not had the visibility boost and the Oscars these are good things
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: I think that last thing is still to this day, maybe the most useful thing that the Oscars can do.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_01]: I would say it's a second most useful thing.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: The most useful thing is that there are a lot of movies.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, that probably would have a harder time getting made.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: If people didn't think they had a chance to win Oscars.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: So whether they get nominated or not, there's a lot of movies that are made or purchased or distribution every year because people think they could be award winners.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: And those movies might not otherwise have a huge audience.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's good.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's, that's fewer films that I think I would like.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how many of these like sort of quote adult dramas are being distributed and really sold out in the, in the American media landscape.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_00]: Specifically because somebody thinks they're going to be good awards content.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_00]: I do not understand.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not saying that the only reason I'm saying is that if,
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: are we going to give Paul Thomas Anderson this much money to do a movie like one battle after another if we because we think this is what the people are clamoring for or because we think this is a prestige picture that gets that kind of movie a little bit more and a lot of these these bigger Oscar contenders aren't big hits not the way they used to be there was a time when
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: What we call Oscar Bay movies were the big hits the big melodramas the big historical epics these things were also the number one blockbusters at the box office Less so these days now it's more action pictures and genre films.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's been true for decades
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: But I do appreciate that when I go to the Academy Awards, especially when I'm going to like documentary features or animated features There the Academy has been really good about bringing attention to films like Arco I'm sure a lot of people watched the French animated film Arco because it was nominated for best animated feature
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: did have a shot at winning who's to say probably not not really probably didn't get a lot of votes but you know what I love that movie and I'm glad that some people found it as a result of it's Oscar and it's now on the books and there will be people who look at the history of the Academy Awards and go oh I don't never heard of that movie in 20 years and so that's something to to watch now and I think that
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: is a positive.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: However, I do think it's worth it.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's interesting because we've talked a lot a lot too much, I think, over the years, about how the Academy has moved kind of further away from, well, let me rephrase, mainstream audiences have moved further away from the kinds of movies that the Academy traditionally celebrates.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of people said, oh, the Academy Awards are out of touch.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I never know what that means.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: This here was an interesting exception though, because we tend to think of Oscar bait movies, the movies that the Academy gravitates towards.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oscar bait is a term that dates back to like the 40s when it was basically just, this feels like the kind of a movie the Academy likes to give awards to, and we often use it kind of derisively, but I think of the Academy as just a very specific demographic, that just really likes World War II movies and biopics.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but,
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like that's shifted.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at the winners this year, 24, 24, 24, 24 categories, eight categories went to horror movies.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: And Kpop Demon Hunters is horror adjacent, and that one too.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: So it's almost half the Oscars went to stuff about demons and monsters and shit.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: I could see that a certain generation was aging out, and a new generation was coming in when something like Lord of the Rings was getting a kind of mid-tension about 20 years ago.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly, like, newer, younger, more genre-loving Academy voters, were coming out in drones to vote for stuff like Lord of the Rings, which is, it's just a big high fantasy epic.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's all action.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: War scenes.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I disagree with that, but I think they're sorry and walking.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think what the load of the rings had that was distinct when it came out was
- 10:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it's high fantasy.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, there are elves.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, there are cave trolls in shit.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: But it also feels like a historical epic.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: You've got the giant battling.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's like these are shots in that movie that are not out of place in something like Braveheart.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it is an epic production and the academy does like that.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_00]: It was the production aspects that I think a lot of, impressed a lot of Academy voters with that one.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: The facts that they,
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: Daringly shot three of these gigantic movies at the same time.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: And committed to releasing them three years on a row.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: That was on herd of at the time.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: Can you imagine a fellowship with the ring had been a dud?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, even if it just lost the money, they just wouldn't have made the other ones.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's fine.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: Probably would have finished them, but they wouldn't have done all those re-shoots.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: Because if you look at this special features and two towers in return of the king, they went back for weeks of re-shoots on each film just to go step up and build the story out and fair enough.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: But it wasn't like the choppy entire everything we saw in that first shot.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: Overall, I'm very cynical about getting me awards.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: I say every year that they are not even though we pay a lot of attention to them.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: They're just sort of the last one, they're the climax of awards season.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of other bodies have given out awards.
- 11:24[SPEAKER_00]: They're not the final word, however.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: They never have been.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: They're more interesting to gauge as to sort of where Hollywood's personality is at the time than they are any kind of any kind of gauge.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: of actual quality, these are the movies in the case of Best Picture, the number one movie that the industry wants to be remembered for this year.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is what we think is posterity.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they're on it, so a lot of times they're not.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they are, but because they're thinking about posterity, because they're thinking in terms of decades, it leads to a certain kind of
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: You're not going to get a lot of films that are out on the edge or incredibly daring, winning the best picture of the Academy Awards too often.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_00]: It does happen from time to time.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty rare though.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: But it's rare.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: And, a case in point, I guess we can talk about the best picture.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I would like to go through to go through like, uh, uh, uh, uh, let me, let me, let me finish my point.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_01]: We could preface it, but the plan is to go through all the awards in the order they were given and we'll talk about what we predicted and so on.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so that we can sort of walk through the night.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: But by all means, obviously the cats out of the bag are one bad one bad after one.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: One bad after another, one best picture.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_00]: And that's a film you and I weren't too fond of.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: a lot of critics were, we weren't, um, you'll note that a lot of, uh, a lot of black critics writing about, uh, one battle after another had some more insightful things to say than, uh, than other critics.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_01]: Which is not suggested that that was a monolith.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of cool things to like to the lot, but there was also, I feel like there was a significant amount of, uh, specific critique.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: I highly recommend reading Odie Henderson's review of one battle after another.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's like really spot on this idea of a revolutionary film that is not the least bit dangerous or revolutionary and is also
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: made by a white filmmaker at all about white characters.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we've got a hard way to all, like, on the edge of this other, the hunter of your story.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_01]: But I think there's the slight exception of that.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think Jason Finity is a bigger part of that story than that sentence gives credibility too.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: But for the most part that movie is going out of its way to center this experience of revolution from people of color in America and center that story around two white guys.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: Two mediocre white guys who get built up a lot.
- 13:56[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, they're both cartoons, but the movie doesn't treat them.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the movie treats Sean Pan as a buffoon and a character.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: But they're all a little bit outsized though.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: We've even, Sean Pan is extremely outsized.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: But even they're leaner and a cowboy on Tiana Taylor's characters.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like over the top of my issue with the caprio is that it's not that the movie is like Vonting him in the movie clearly treats him as a bit of a buffoon, but the characters within the movie treat him like it's a big like he's a big deal And that for me is not very convincing because he didn't actually do very much Hmm all things consider he accomplished very little he's kind of just playing off of this like early tangential
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: Success peepest Decaprio is peepest Yeah, he's like I was in the Beatles briefly like that's what he's got and everyone's like oh, yeah, he was he should get his own movie But I guess we'll talk about that in a little bit more detail beginning the first award of the night There's usually a big one.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_01]: They want us to Yeah, and so the making he was best supporting actress, which was a real race this year like
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: Nobody really was predicting that L fanning was going to win it.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: She was probably out of it, but I feel like everyone else had a real outside's chance.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_01]: You and I differed on this one.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: You thought, hold on, this is a boring egg.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you thought Tiana Taylor was going to win this.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_01]: And she had swept a lot of the critics awards in particular, leading up to this.
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: And that was sort of, whenever I voted for one battle after another, I knew it was going to get a lot of attention.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was going to get this much of a change in it.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, here we go.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: Well, especially with the senators having 16 nominations, I predict in more of a sweep than this and this is one of the reasons why I didn't do as good as they normally did.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: But to I predicted Amy Madigan and I was correct, Amy Madigan won the Academy Award for sinners for playing a witch weapons.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, you said sinners.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: This is what happens.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: We know record for a while.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: I lose my mojo.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, she was she was the witch.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_00]: She was the central monster in the movie weapons
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: Weapons was a movie that I like the style of and I like the sort of mood of weapons, but when it finally reveals kind of what the big plot is, it becomes a lot less interesting.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: I agree, and I think it kind of loses its message.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: Especially when it's called weapons, it's like, oh wait, that's literal.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_00]: You just made it literal, like this is not like a symbol for anything.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I also find think that the movie is, uh,
- 16:31[SPEAKER_01]: It's a mystery for a lot of it.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's like all of these kids went missing all at once.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_01]: There's no explanation for it.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing makes any rational sense.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone is trying to apply rational sense of this.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: And the most people can do in that movie is come up with a scapegoat.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: So they all decide to blame all of those kids elementary school teacher, played by Julia Gardner.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_01]: She's great in the movie.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: And for a big chunk of the movie, we're just following her or following people out of her periphery.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: And it's a witch hunt, literally, right, witch on her car.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we're not being sound about this.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: And if you look at the history of witch hunts in the world, at no point, were they ever correct?
- 17:11[SPEAKER_01]: No one, they never actually historically, historically, no.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so far, we haven't found one yet.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's like how we have all of these ghost hunting shows, and yet we still have no evidence that ghosts exist.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_01]: Except I've seen one.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_01]: no evidence, that's true.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, that is hearsay.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_01]: But my point is this, there's telling a story about why witch hunts are bad.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm with you on.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_01]: And then ultimately, who was responsible, an actual witch, they just picked the wrong one.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_01]: And for me, that's weird.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that really, there's doesn't feel very coherent to me thematically.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: Well, there's nothing thematic about it.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: It's just sort of a clever way to tell a pretty unintriguing story.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: And that's my issue with weapons.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_00]: But Amy Madigan did create a unique character.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: They're memorable characters.
- 17:57[SPEAKER_00]: I like one of those characters that will go on like a t-shirt next to Pinhead and Freddie Kruger it's on a permanent Halloween staple.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, we're going to see Ant Gladys, the name of a character.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: T-shirts and at West Hollywood carnivals for at least the last couple of years.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: Right next to the K-pop demon hunters and the bride.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_00]: The bride.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm actually, I'd actually be surprised if somehow we haven't had a RuPaul's drag race and glad a section of some kind.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm sure they've done like a horror version.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: I know they have.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_01]: But it's still like that's if they haven't done it already.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's only a matter of time.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Great.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_01]: Glad it's done.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: Who are like this, there's like a celebrity drag queen show on shutter.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, oh, what is that called?
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's called like killer locks or something.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's fine, I watched a little bit of it.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_01]: But, uh, in a case, I'm not a huge fan of the movie.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a fan of parts of the movie.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: I think love performances are great.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's filmed wonderfully.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what is that called?
- 18:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's called like Killer Locks or something.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's fun.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: I watched a little bit of it.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but, uh, in a case, I'm not a huge fan of the movie.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a fan
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: But the scene of the like the open door and the guy kind of like wanders out like after I'll big long pause That's some scary stuff.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah stuff in weapons and I guess she's the best part so give her a Oscar That's a surprising choice.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think I don't think they would have happened a few years ago I had picked do I thought should win was and I'm kind of alone on this but elf-fanneing partly because it's actually an award for predator battling
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: But partly because I think she's really wonderful in sentimental value.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really complicated role.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's not the showiest role in the movie, but she plays a very good actress who has been miscast.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: And it was really funny when they showed the clip, everyone has a little clip of their acting.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: And the clip was her in a scene where the whole point was she wasn't acting perfectly.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_01]: She was a little lucky.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's really tricky.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_00]: And also, she has the rather unfortunate role of, it's not an American film.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: It's an original picture.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: She plays the big American star, who's supposed to represent Hollywood, and the fact that the selling scar scar character is asking her was somewhat of a sellout moment.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, I'm going to go, I have to ask this American to appear in my picture and not do sort of the genuine thing I would like to do.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: And she's still managed to, even though she, I think she understood that she's playing sort of the vapid face of Hollywood, still brought up.
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: Overwhelmingly human element to it.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: We understood who she was and the fact that she was miscast in this park.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: The big moment comes when she realizes that she's miscast for the power where she realizes she can't handle this as an actress and that's actually good acting.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's really good.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's incredible performance.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: I was really glad she got nominated.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: It thought she wasn't.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: She didn't have a chance in hell of winning though.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: The one we
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: I can never enroll in him, I need new glasses.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: Inga Ibsdotcher, Lilias, also from Central Asia, has a bit of show where you're role in sentimental value.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like they were sort of sucking up all of the attention, but...
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: Honestly, it's a big crop, one of the actors across the board.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a fan of the character of that Santa Taylor play.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there's an elements of that character that don't get discussed very well.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_01]: But that's a screenplay.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's a screenplay.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_01]: She's not a Santa Taylor.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: She played it great.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_01]: There's no argument for me on that.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_01]: The next award, and they really rushed to give K-pop demon hunters an award because the next one was animated feature.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: And if you think about it,
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: There are three best feature film categories at the Academy Awards.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: Best picture is best picture, but best documentary and best animated feature are also in a way, best picture.
- 21:42[SPEAKER_01]: Also international future.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: And international theater, right?
- 21:44[SPEAKER_01]: Therefore, these are like, they should all have like a lot of cloud if you ask me.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I would imagine in my head, I would imagine saving them towards the end, but,
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: We got to get K-pop demon hunters and we're really fast so that's the one the kids are waiting to see and in fact my my son who is as of this recording 10 years old He had some friends his age.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: There was a younger kid at our Oscar party That was the only film they had seen was the pop demon hunters that one my son also saw avatar three with us Those are the films he saw that were nominated for the awards.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and so yeah, they were waiting to see that happen And there was no doubt that it was going to happen
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: No, no other film had the juice, no one else was talking really about any other film.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: I happened to think came up the event hunters was and there's a lot of great animated films that came out last year that weren't even in the conversation, unfortunately, like boys go to Jupiter.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's been space princess.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's been space princess.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: Wonderful.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: Wonderful films.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: So all of my other favorite animated films didn't get nominated, it like our co-a-lop, and none of my other favorite films got it.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_00]: I liked our co-a-lop.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: You liked it more than I did, but it's a good movie.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: So, I was happy that K-Bop, the human hunter, is one of the thought it went to the correct film.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: But you said that you thought our coach should win.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: And he wanted to talk about it a little bit, once he'll tell people a little bit about it, because we'll go and know this one.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's a time travel story.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: It takes place in two future times.
- 23:05[SPEAKER_00]: One is like in sort of the kind of near future, and then there's the very, very distant future.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: And in the very, very distant future, the main character,
- 23:13[SPEAKER_00]: a young boy who has essentially Joseph's amazing technical or dream coat that was like the rainbow outfit and a little crystal in his forehead allows him to time travel and he accidentally flies back in time crash lands loses the crystal can't time travel and falls in with a girl about his age who lives in a house in the countryside this is like in the future from us this is like in distant past but it's like 40 years ago it's like the near future for us and
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's lonesome and melancholy in a way that I really appreciate because I think it really captures what the world is like when you're a kid and you're by yourself.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: The young girl that he meets is living in a house.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: Her parents check in on her via holograms.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: So they're on some kind of like extensive business trip they're never home.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: they have dinner quotes together, even though they're just sort of looking at light projections of each other.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: And the only thing that's really kind of helping her as a robot and there's also a shield around the house, so she can never really leave.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_00]: And I appreciate this movie because it is unafraid to leave the kid alone.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and not in the sort of like a fun Spielbergian.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna meet ET when I'm by myself kind of a thing.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's like no, she's like alone and in danger and Just afraid and sad and I like all of that stuff and then of course visually I think it's really fantastic Orange, the use of color is really not really beautiful.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, not just the rainbow stuff.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_00]: There's that this trio of
- 24:42[SPEAKER_00]: Mysterious bad guys who are stalking the time traveler character, and they have these like pointed rainbow sunglasses and these brightly colored suits And and like these very unique hair do's and they're just sort of like stalking around they going to a museum at one point But it's like a holiday museum So there's that it's like like running through dinosaurs.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like going through exhibit to exhibit and they're just sort of like everything's changing around them
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: there's a lot of good innovation in them if it's like it's inspired a lot by studio jibbly which seems obvious like a lot of movies are but very much in the way that it has a particular attention to detail to nature which I respect but also the sense of color and sort of exaggerated character designs especially remind me of ponio
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, which I can see.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there'd be a really good, just visually, be really good double feature together.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so yeah, no arguments there.
- 25:36[SPEAKER_01]: The next one, because it makes sense to pair them, it was the best animated short, the best animated short, uh, went to the film, uh, I predicted.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: which was the girl who cried perils, which is a wonderful, stop-motion animated short.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's Canadian about a little girl as in like her grandfather's study.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_01]: And she finds like this one little pearl.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: And he says, of all the things that I own, you found the most interesting and magical one and let me tell you the story about it.
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: And then it tells a story about when he was like, a little child in the depression.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: He lived the next door too, as he was like, anybody lived, I mean squatting, a girl who was so ill-treated by her parents that she cried herself to sleep every night, but she cried pearls, and he would collect the pearls.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: And he's in a moral quandary where, if he gets her to cry more, he can get more pearls and get himself out of poverty.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really, really, really great idea for a story.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really fascinating sort of moral black mark.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's got a great ending.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a fairy tale.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_01]: But it's got, it's really comes together nice.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: And it's stop motion animated.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just meticulous and beautiful.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really, really happy at one.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: But these were really hard to predict.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_01]: And you predicted it would go to forever grand, which I feel like is a more conventional, very handsome, but conventional tear jerk.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why I thought it was going to win.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: It was really conventional.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was recognizable.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_00]: It was my least favorite of the movement.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, that's just me being cynical.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's about a cute little bear and makes friends with a tree.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: And they're both.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's CG, but it's made to look like it's stop motion.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: So there's this kind of like blocky stylized look to it.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: But it feels very, also very conventionally Disney-fi.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_00]: Do you remember what when you wanted to win this?
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, here we go.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_01]: You said retirement plan.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: you've done nothing you're holding it all off and so well it's really charming there's a sadness to it that that that elevates and it's really good short not only great nominees is here um just solid across the board for the uh apart from very green I like that actually it's still very well made I like to all of the shorts actually and we have a whole special show devoted to reviewing all the shorts yeah that was only couple episodes ago because I've been once wasn't that you can the next one up uh was costume design
- 28:10[SPEAKER_01]: This I think somewhat predictably ended up going to Frankenstein.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: You thought it would go to HamNet, which makes sense, Pyrenees.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but then I'm going to Frankenstein, which lets me honest here, Gamble Del Toro puts on a production.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't sure how much the Academy still liked him.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_00]: Because they, they, nobody is one for best picture.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's fun for us picture.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't expect that.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: And didn't think Frank and Stein had the kind of awards cloud.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_00]: Almost felt like it's like Bugonia.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: They like Giorgos Lantimos, but they're not going to, like, really give it a wards, right?
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I think if Bugonia, they didn't, yeah.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they even had a standout production element, maybe.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe so.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think Bugonia had a great score.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: wasn't going to win the production design as well like that there's some alien stuff and it's been briefly Yeah, yeah, it just doesn't pop like Gambleville, Toro's Frankenstein is not my favorite adaptation about Frankenstein by white margin, but
- 29:06[SPEAKER_01]: Gosh is it pretty and so much of it is practical and you just you can't pretend it doesn't look good I really like with the exception of the CGI walls which look terrible everything and that looks amazing like it totally fine with it I'm very happy about it So that was next Next we had makeup and hair styling which also went to Frankenstein.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to create a Frankenstein
- 29:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, that takes makeup.
- 29:30[SPEAKER_00]: That's, you can't have a fake answer without some good makeup.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: Now you've got a friend.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: Frankenstein is, as a tradition of great makeup, going all the way back to the 30s.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: Go back to the sign winner if you want to go that phone.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we all predicted Frankenstein, although there was a, there was an outside chance of sinners had like a head of steam.
- 29:46[SPEAKER_01]: I was sweeping it, got it gone there.
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was really happy though, and I think if I was voting, I would have voted for the ugly step sister.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: which is really a good movie and it's the first shudder film to be nominated for an Academy Award.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if you missed it, it's a shame, but it's still out there, you should totally see it.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: It is a retelling of Cinderella from the perspective of one of the ugly step sisters who is also being treated terribly by the victims of mom, because she's like not conventionally attractive and we only have so much time to
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: force her to be conventionally attracted like force her to get cosmetic surgery for the get cosmetics in the middle ages the first of it like get cosmetic surgery there's a bit where you you you way too much according to this abusive mom so we need you to swallow this tapeworm and like it's like it gets really bad it's really gross but it has a point and it's a really great production I would have been really happy if it had been nominated for costume as well so yeah it's a gross movie
- 30:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm okay with it being gross, it makes sense to be gross.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really glad I got nominated.
- 30:55[SPEAKER_01]: It is such a, honestly, it was like the biggest, really for me this year, but in a good way.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_01]: I just, good on you, Academy, I didn't get it in you.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: That's really me.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_01]: It'd be like a final destination in bloodlines.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_01]: I got nominated for Best Editing.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: I would've been like, really good.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what have you been for?
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: I've been very strange when I was in that video.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would've been fucking awesome.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: So that's them there.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next award, and this was exciting, because this is the first time they've ever given it.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: This is the casting award.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_01]: Best casting, which when we talk about what movie we think is going to predict, it was going to win in Academy Award.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're not going with precedent.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_01]: Academy, for example, costuming.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: Academy tends to like period pieces in costume, right now.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_01]: Big, big poofy dresses, gowns and fancy suits.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a lot, a lot of really flashy stuff.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: You don't see a lot of content where early set films, winning that award.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: It's really uncommon.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: So we have some mindier of what the Academy gravitates towards.
- 31:51[SPEAKER_01]: We had no idea what was going to win.
- 31:54[SPEAKER_01]: Best casting.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: It seemed like the best bet.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_01]: was either one battle after another or centers because they're not only where they the top contenders were best picture, but they also had big sprawling casts of big and you know, you know, actors alike and they're all both wonderfully cast.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: I would have actually even though I'm not a fan of the movie.
- 32:12[SPEAKER_01]: I would have been very happy if Marty's Supreme had won.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Marty's Supreme actually had some good stunt casting.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: Something that was really innovative.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: The villain of the film was played by the guy from Shark Tank.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a pretty big swing, I really appreciated when I forgot the actor's name, but like the the evil gangster, the evil Ferrari.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_00]: Able Ferrari, that's right, Able Ferrari, I played the gangster.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_00]: Pendulette played like some random hillbilly in a house at some point, and you wouldn't even recognize there was Pendulette.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_00]: Good fun casting.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_00]: It should have gotten it.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: No, obviously, I would have very, very happy, even though I'm not a fan.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: that movie is a great casting spectacular honestly would have been very happy up it's very I would have been tempted to vote for it but it went to one bad laughter another it was the first big wins for one bad laughter another and at this point I'm watching and I'm a center sky and I'm like oh same yeah
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: I realized that most of the awards that we've had so far were not sinners awards.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't going to win best animated feature, it wasn't nominated.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: It was, it could have won best supporting actors, but there were no guarantees on that.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_01]: It was a really tough race.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: This was the one where it's like, this could potentially show us where we're going.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: This is going to tilt the entire afternoon.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: This is a preview.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so it was...
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it was and I was a bit disappointed by that.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: I do want to say over on our Patreon page in order to make it a little special It's we didn't do a podcast like we normally did.
- 33:40[SPEAKER_01]: I invited my girlfriend to Participate and to she's also loves movies and her name is Kate Stamin London.
- 33:49[SPEAKER_01]: She's an author You should read her books there excellent and
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: She had the most fucking spot on thing to say about best casting and I really just thought like, oh fuck yeah, I would have loved it if sinners didn't want anyway, but this is like it just fucking shut up.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hold on, what did she, what did she, look at her, the cut.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_01]: Here we go.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: Putting Michael B. Jordan in a movie twice is the kind of casting innovation that deserves recognition.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: And she's a director and a movie twice.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's brilliant.
- 34:19[SPEAKER_00]: That worked out great.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty wise.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_00]: Something I appreciate is when you think about casting directors, casting directors, and this is just sort of a general observation of cross Hollywood, tend to be women.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: It's so far, it's never one best casting award in the entire history.
- 34:38[SPEAKER_00]: And only one has ever been nominated.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_00]: So the five nominees, four of them are women.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of appreciate that we essentially created a category for women to win.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that.
- 34:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know that.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_00]: It tends to be, but it's a female dominated field, and I'm glad that it's being recognized.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_01]: Not unlike caution design, whether that's...
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: for whatever reason, that doesn't to be the way.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_00]: OK, you can't, you can theorize this to why.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to see that as like throwing a bone or anything like that.
- 35:13[SPEAKER_01]: But it is certainly an industry that actually, yeah, that's a good point.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: All right, the next award that was given out is best live action short.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_01]: And this was a fun one.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was the first tie in over a decade.
- 35:25[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_00]: And I got them both wrong.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I got one, I got one right and the other one was the one I wanted to win.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_01]: So I felt doubly blasted, but I texted you and I was like, does that count?
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: Do I get 50%?
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: How does that work?
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: You got it right.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_00]: You kind of guessed it was going to be a tie.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really cone and a Brian jokes.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like we just ruined everyone's Oscar balance.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the winners were the singers and two people exchanging saliva, two very different movies.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, two people exchanging saliva is one of my favorites of all of the nominees this year.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was like Yorgos Lanthymos, but it worked again.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: It was like, like, took place in this weird parallel universe where kissing people and
- 36:10[SPEAKER_00]: Not only are you punished with death, but you're like, spirit away on the spot.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_00]: Like you're thrown into a coffin while you're still alive.
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: If they catch you kissing something that is grab you, throw you into a coffin, drive you out into the woods and throw you off a cliff.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: Immediately, no trial.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_01]: So physical intimacy.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: is essentially outlawed and everyone lose these very loveless lives and it's a story of a rich woman who keeps going to like this very fancy department store and a young woman to flirt with the shop girl and the shop girl and they clearly are very very into each other but question is will they take the risk will they be willing to put their lives on the line for this
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: in order to feel alive, and it's very, it's very just hopian, and it creates a pretty fully realized world.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good short.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was going to be too odd for Academy of Owners and there it is.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: The argument I heard in favor of that movie winning.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: And I ultimately, the reason why even though it wasn't my favorite, or even the one I necessarily thought was going to win, I ended up moving my vote to it, was because it feels like a complete future.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like the Academy really loves when the live action short feels like kind of a short little mini movie and not like a short short.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas sinners, the other winner is definitely a short and every conceivable way.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: But it's great.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's based on an old Russian story about a bunch of men hanging out in a bar middle of the night.
- 37:33[SPEAKER_01]: It's freezing outside.
- 37:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, just kind of huddled together, depressed and drinking in an inky black.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: you know basement essentially and one guy can't afford his booze and so we offers the sing for it and it creates an impromptu singing competition between all the guys there and they're all great singers.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: They all have a song in their heart and I love that.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_01]: There are different styles of different kinds of music.
- 37:56[SPEAKER_01]: They love they're singing about like songs that represent different aspects of the human experience.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: You can tell like this guy is particularly love-lord and this guy has a lot
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: Really beautiful.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I really love that short a lot.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was so good.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_01]: So I was really really happy that both of them won.
- 38:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's really cool I like them, but I assumed that Friend of Dorothy the one of the Mary and Marulas was going to win because for the reason you said Yeah, it felt like a little mini movie, but it was the feel good one.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I thought it was the most accessible So that was just me I did not give the Academy the benefit of the down.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: I feel a little bad about that now Well, I usually don't
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: get rewarded when I give the academy that which is one of the things that ultimately like I find it gone with what I if I had gone with I'm not trusting the academy to get this right I would have predicted more accurately this year because there's a few where I was like I feel like I overthought it but in any case the next award was your best supporting actor and at this point I started losing my mind.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_01]: Because the nominees, great nominees, except for one.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_01]: So it was Benicio Del Toro, or one bad laughter another.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_01]: Jacob A. Lorty for Frankenstein, Del Rendo for sinners, Sean Penn for one bad laughter another, and Stone Scarcecard for sentimental value.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: And if only one of those that felt kind of like a long shot was Benicio Del Toro.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he hasn't been getting a lot of, uh, uh,
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's actually one major more.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a lot of nominations, no awards.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: But every other one of those guys is like one prominent awards and like been featured prominently in Oscar, campaigns, is a champagne has been staying out of that, but he's one of a lot of awards.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought, and I still think it was right mentality that Delroy Lindo was the person that the Academy wanted to see except an award.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: He has classies been in the street for a long time.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: He was really moving speeches, it would have been great moment.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's been a good make-good for uh, to five bloods.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, oh, yeah, it's really good.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: And the rest of his career, I thought he should have been nominated as far back as the cider house rules.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_01]: I can't go back to get shorty.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: Damn right, he's fantastic.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: No, he's amazing.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and then Jacob Lorty, you know, he's young.
- 40:06[SPEAKER_01]: He would have been like a big career boost for him.
- 40:09[SPEAKER_01]: That would have been really, really exciting, still in Scar's guard.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_01]: But he's never been nominated before.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's an incredible performance.
- 40:15[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, it's end.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_00]: I, I thought this was like going to be still in Scar's guard sort of like legacy Oscar.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like he's been in the industry for decades.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: And he, that's an international picture.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_00]: He's an American picture.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's been in a lot of meaningful dramas, but also fluffy superhero movies.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_01]: What of the all-time greatest roles in the history of Star Wars recently?
- 40:35[SPEAKER_01]: What he's doing?
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's on a... And or... Yeah.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: He's amazing on that.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's a great actor.
- 40:40[SPEAKER_00]: I thought they were going to...
- 40:41[SPEAKER_00]: So I voted for...
- 40:42[SPEAKER_01]: Selling Scarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscarscars
- 40:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's they thought Sean Penn gave a great performance and of course it's subjective Of course a lot of people apparently thought that they voted for him for best supporting actor But I've also heard a lot of people say that like, oh, like this is like, you know, if you thought like stone scars guard or don't we're going to get it the academy doesn't like
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: always doesn't think in terms of legacy and I'm like first off that's been disproven a lot uh secondly we can't pretend the Oscars are a meritocracy it doesn't it doesn't fuzz away it's a popularity contest and it's so yeah also how do
- 41:30[SPEAKER_00]: How do you compare two performances?
- 41:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, unless they're all playing the same role, even then they just are bringing to be bringing something different to it.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_00]: Game of Thrones, if there was all Frankenstein's.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_00]: If all five of those actors were playing Frankenstein's.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: Well, just, what if we're all, all would have been great.
- 41:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, yeah, but also, I would love to say all those actors play Frankenstein.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that would have been awesome.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, don't scar a skirt.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_00]: I can see that immediately.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: Well, just imagine some of the various actors who have played Frankenstein, if you were like,
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: who was the best Frankenstein and to be fair, we as critics and writers in the entertainment, you know, world have to write things like there, the best Frankenstein's of all time, when we rank them, and like this, arbitrary, and that's not really the point.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's mostly just to recommend movies and get you talking about them again.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: But like, even if you said, we're going to just put all of the great Frankenstein's up in the same category.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: You got Carlov, up against, uh,
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: Um, Christian Bale.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: Christian Bale.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: I love Christian Bale.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: I think it was an amazing Frankenstein great great pick or not a great movie, but Clancy Brown is a great Frankenstein in the bride.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_00]: The movie is bad.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_00]: He's really good in it.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: The other the bride from the 80s.
- 42:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's staying.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm Jennifer Beale.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's great movie not so much, but he's great.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you can't technically even compare them because those are all very different movies.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_01]: They're very different tastes, they're very different tones, they're very different acting styles.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's all a popularity contest.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_01]: So thinking about not just, it's not just like, who was the best, it could think of it that way, if you want, but again, it's subjective.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: For me, it's,
- 43:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like, who's achievement was the most outstanding?
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: Who did the most cool thing?
- 43:15[SPEAKER_01]: And if you can't think of any other reason to compare them, then someone who just is fucking amazing and has never had an Oscar and they deserve it.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the end of the world.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's the fucking Oscars.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: mean they're actually the best it's just who do we want to give a gold statue to and you I just think Sean Penn who has been a real shit and real life if you look at some of the accusations that my Donna put up against them like really terrible things
- 43:41[SPEAKER_00]: people and people knew about that stuff like that was being mocked and mad magazine yeah and he's one of those actors who like everyone just kind of agreed not to talk about that same thing with Brad Pitt who's something that's a free fucking past some of these actors do they just did they get an accused of abuse or love committing some sort of crime even yeah and they just sort of forget about it people just sort of been like yeah
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like, so some are outstead, some are outsteads, you know, they're not all the same, but like still like it's sort of the thing where it's like you would think that would maybe make people less eager but apparently not.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_01]: But he is an excellent actor.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's been excellent in various films.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's grown a dead man walking.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's great in milk.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's uniquely bad in his career.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think he's I am Sam bad, but he's really, really just a bizarre, not very convincing cartoon for me.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_01]: And what about me?
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I get it.
- 44:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's playing like an over-the-top villain.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_01]: I don't see any real nuance to him.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he's a bit terribly interesting villain.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: Granted, I don't think Gladys is a particularly interesting villain either in a lot of ways, but like, she's a colorful and memorable, yeah.
- 44:54[SPEAKER_01]: And I just didn't get that from Sean Pan.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: I thought he was one of the least interesting characters in the movie.
- 44:59[SPEAKER_01]: So, an addition to, there are at least four other actors in the category, I would have rather one.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't think this is when a Sean band's better performance is, so I just, I was sort of like, oh god.
- 45:12[SPEAKER_01]: This doesn't vote well.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_01]: Things are not going great.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not happy.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, I was upset about it too.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: None.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_00]: I, as an actor, I think, and as an activist, think Sean Pena has this had in the right place a lot of the time.
- 45:28[SPEAKER_01]: Apparently he was in Ukraine.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's why he wasn't there.
- 45:31[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, one of the reasons why he wasn't there.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_00]: He's a complicated man.
- 45:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's using his wealth for good, but he's also a dickhead, so.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_00]: And as long as you want to shoot, he's done some really shitty stuff.
- 45:43[SPEAKER_00]: But I don't think he's ever, you know, really.
- 45:45[SPEAKER_00]: So it was detrition for.
- 45:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's okay.
- 45:49[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like the movies in that much and it's just one battle after another was starting to win these things that the dominoes were beginning to fall was making me upset because it's a movie I didn't like that much.
- 46:01[SPEAKER_00]: It was a movie that felt like the safe choice It's made by a filmmaker that ordinarily I like for being a little bit off-kilter or a little bit odd or a little bit confrontational
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: you watch something like Phantom Thread there's a lot of like complex stuff that's a bizarre film and like extraordinarily dramatic story is such a weird nightmare drama about like the origins of america america's like self obsession uh... there's all kinds of interesting stuff going on in a lot of his movies even if they're costic or abrasive
- 46:33[SPEAKER_00]: And I felt like a lot of those qualities were missing from one battle after another.
- 46:36[SPEAKER_00]: It was like the weird stoner Lucy Gooseen as of an heronvice with less of a point to death.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_00]: And those supposed to be no points to an heronvice.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: We were in a frustrating place with one battle after another because I don't think you and I, you or I think it's like a terrible movie.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's not good stuff in it.
- 46:54[SPEAKER_01]: There's really good performances.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Johnny Greenwood scores fantastic.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: There's good stuff in that movie.
- 47:01[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it cohes very well.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it has a particularly salient point.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like it's one of those movies where people are throwing out, ah, but it's complicated and nuance.
- 47:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, I'm not sure it is.
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: I think it just isn't cohesive.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_01]: And you can call that complicated.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't think it actually has like enough to say other than, you know, yeah, you know, conservatives
- 47:31[SPEAKER_01]: Liberals are annoying on the phone.
- 47:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, I don't know if that equates my dude.
- 47:37[SPEAKER_01]: I just feel like we're making it weird.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, listen, we're going to have a lot of talk with all of our friends, including right about now.
- 47:43[SPEAKER_01]: Because the next two awards were best adapted to screenplay and best original screenplay.
- 47:48[SPEAKER_01]: And both of these felt like kind of a lock, like there were two definite front runners.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_01]: There's one bed left or another.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe HamNet could have eaked it out.
- 47:56[SPEAKER_01]: But one bed left or another, one best adapted screenplay.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: which I don't think I voted for.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think I actually voted for it.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_00]: Did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for that one or did you vote for
- 48:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like as a best picture nominee, but don't want to give best picture to they get best screenplayed.
- 48:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you were right because the center is one best original screenplayed.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_01]: You thought the mental value was going to get that, and I suppose that was plausible.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: But I voted with my heart.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 48:40[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I love centers too.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 48:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'd say Sims is a great movie, but I do think there are other screenplays that would have been very happy if it had one of the set of centers, but it's a very distinct, interesting screenplay.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_01]: It's very and usually structured and it's got a ton of depth in it and I think one bad left or another, it does have a cohesive incoherent through line, somatically, narratively, character-wise.
- 49:06[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone feels like they're in the same movie, and
- 49:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a great screenplay.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very, very happy at one.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: Vlad Ryan Kugler won something, because if he won nothing out of a mad, but yeah, so that's that was pretty straightforward.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_01]: Next we had best production design, Frankenstein.
- 49:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 49:24[SPEAKER_00]: That was, the Guillermo del Toro is our new Tim Burton.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: But you said that.
- 49:28[SPEAKER_00]: But they give him awards more.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that Gamal del Toro doesn't crank him out like Burton does, or at least he did.
- 49:37[SPEAKER_01]: There was just a turning out studio product and it felt kind of boring.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'll do Charlie Choccafact, it won't be very good.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: I'll do Alice Wonderland and it really won't be very good.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I just think it wasn't an interesting time for him.
- 49:49[SPEAKER_00]: No, and Tim Burton is not like Gamble Deltaro, and that he does have similar interests.
- 49:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think they draw a lot of their visual influences from the same places.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's the both Hammerhorror fan.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_00]: You could.
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: Swap their film titles and get equally interesting films in both senses.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_00]: Tim Burton could have done Hellboy, Gamble Tutorial could have done Darkshadows.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I don't know how to send that.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, then they were both would have been interesting films to look at.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: Can I send Gamble Tutorials Dumbo?
- 50:20[SPEAKER_00]: That would have been a weird, right?
- 50:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you would write in a weird fucking puppet for that Male, isn't it, man?
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: And Tim Burton's was weird.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_00]: I learned anti Disney's screen.
- 50:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_00]: I feel though that Tim Burton, like, was in Academy Darling for a little bit and then he kind of fell out of favor because he was doing too much commercial stuff.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: And he just handed me the Toro.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_00]: Only did that a couple of times.
- 50:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like he's been pursuing his own interests a little bit more strongly ever since then.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like he's the kind of weird, like your goes Lantimos.
- 50:50[SPEAKER_01]: He's the kind of weird that the Academy got used to.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: And they're now comfortable giving that awards.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 50:56[SPEAKER_00]: I never quite so much, you never got like a best director nomination for anything.
- 51:04[SPEAKER_01]: And it was nominated for best animated feature for Frankenweenies.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I think Corpse Brad.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_00]: Corpse Brad.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_00]: I think you're right, I think I'm surprised.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: So it was not enough for that a couple of times, but that was the only time that it was ever nominated.
- 51:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, yeah, all right, let's get it.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: He'll get an honorary Oscar someday, yeah.
- 51:21[SPEAKER_00]: He still has great films in him, both of you and Guillermo del Toro.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_00]: I want to see Guillermo del Toro do something that's not pre-made for him.
- 51:29[SPEAKER_00]: Same with Tim Burton.
- 51:31[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like both of these filmmakers have been matched with material that already locks into their existing style.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_01]: Hellboy, Pinocchio, Frankenstein, and he's done original stuff too, but not as much as I'd like.
- 51:46[SPEAKER_01]: But then you go to him.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: But last time he didn't, he wasn't rewarded for it.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: People didn't love Chris of Crimson Peak very much.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 51:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I like Crimson Peak a lot.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think it's a nice film, but I think it's a nice film.
- 51:54[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a nice film.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_01]: It shows that he's very fond of Gothic romance.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I said before, I kind of wish he had done weathering heights.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: There he is.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_00]: That would have been a cool movie.
- 52:02[SPEAKER_01]: But anyway, next up we had Best Visual Effects.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: This was my big swing.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I had a rationale.
- 52:09[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at the history of the best visual effects award, most of the time, not always, but most of the time, they don't gravitate towards the flashiest film.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: The gravitate towards the most respectable film.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what would be the least embarrassing for your mom to vote for?
- 52:28[SPEAKER_01]: Or if that's too cynical for you, just what's the film that's either nominated for Best Picture or feels like it could have been nominated for Best Picture?
- 52:35[SPEAKER_01]: And this is how you get films like Hugo,
- 52:38[SPEAKER_01]: Winning best visual effects over one of the planet of the Gabe's movies.
- 52:44[SPEAKER_01]: doesn't feel like the same level of visual effects, but sometimes it's really cool, like when X-Mock and O-1.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_01]: Great, maybe not the most expensive flashy, you know, enormous visual effects you've ever seen, but useful delicate tells the story, like it's very ingrained within the film.
- 53:01[SPEAKER_01]: So on that note, my thought was, the Academy has already given Avatar two Academy Awards the best visual effects, and the new one doesn't really push that in any new direction, really.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: That's the same thing.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's still impressive.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: But it's still impressive in the air.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was very plausible that it could win.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: But my theory was, Sanders' best picture nominated and the twinning effects on Michael B. Jordan alone are the best I've ever seen in a movie.
- 53:27[SPEAKER_01]: They're just right there.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: They serve the story.
- 53:29[SPEAKER_01]: They're everywhere.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: So goddamn good.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_01]: I thought Sanders was going to win that.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: I was running to have a turn.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's Avatar.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, what's up?
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: People like Avatar.
- 53:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's still a big hit.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_00]: Did it eventually beat minecraft yet at the domestic boss box office.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_00]: Good for them Thank God, right Minecraft didn't get nothing You're buying good didn't get anything.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_00]: What the hell?
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_01]: Well Man didn't get visual effect.
- 53:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's out or nothing.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: Hollywood doesn't know what to do with the next generation The K-pop demon hunter this is why they went so hard on K-pop demon hunters.
- 54:03[SPEAKER_00]: It was something gen Alpha likes.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's like well, we got it
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: But we know that gen Alpha likes this one what else does now feel like we have no idea Like it helps it was in the animated category of gen Alpha went nuts for like a genre of demon hunting movie that was live action I don't think it would have been not with it for best picture.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh definitely not.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, they had a creepy scene as like two weird
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, next up we had Best Documentary Short and Best Documentary Feature.
- 54:28[SPEAKER_01]: Best Documentary Short, we reviewed all of these.
- 54:31[SPEAKER_00]: I predicted four of the five were like just really difficult topics.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like dead children and abortion clinic and photojournalist dying in the field.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then what was it about donkey?
- 54:46[SPEAKER_00]: Look through a telescope.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_00]: I almost thought it was going to, but it didn't.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_00]: I knew it was going to be one of the one of the more political films this year.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean four to five.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's got a good shot.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_01]: So you predicted children no more were and are gone, which is about protesters and Tel Aviv in support of Palestine, which is a very controversial position over there.
- 55:09[SPEAKER_01]: And I predicted all the empty rooms.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_01]: It went to all the empty rooms.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_00]: I uh, can I confess something?
- 55:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you can.
- 55:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mixed those up.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, no, I wanted to be all the empty rooms.
- 55:19[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, the other dead kids.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the other dead kids, maybe.
- 55:22[SPEAKER_00]: So I wrote down what I wrote down.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_00]: So I got to take my lunch while I took them.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_00]: But I did actually predict the correct one.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: I just messed up.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, in any case, if you've never seen all the empty rooms, you probably haven't.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's available online, I think.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: is a documentary about families who have lost children to school shootings and have kept their bedrooms exactly as they were.
- 55:49[SPEAKER_01]: And there was a reporter who was known mostly for doing like puff pieces like here's your funny animal thing of the week Yeah, who decided he wanted to do something more meaningful and put together a project where he and a photo journalist Like painstakingly photographed for like historical record every child but every child but like hundreds of children's
- 56:09[SPEAKER_01]: Dead children's rooms and it's a really beautiful story and unlike the other ones It had like kind of like an arc because here's a guy who like it's about something of himself as well It's about him as well as the kids, but it never was like it never made him the star or anything No, he was just the he was just our way in yeah, so it didn't feel like crash or like it was in poor taste to tell his story
- 56:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought it was a really good story, not only was it illuminating, and a harsher binder of something that is still a terrible, terrible, terrible, terrible problem, but also a reminder that journalism can be more meaningful than it often gets to.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought that was a good combo, the Academy thought it was a good combo too.
- 56:49[SPEAKER_01]: Best documentary.
- 56:52[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't see any of the other ones I heard the buzz about was the perfect neighbor, so that's what I voted for.
- 57:01[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people predicted that when it was a Netflix feature, a lot of people saw it.
- 57:07[SPEAKER_01]: You and I both predicted the perfect neighbor.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_01]: Went to Mr. Nobody against Putin, which is a story about someone named Mr. Nobody who really didn't like Putin.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_01]: No, it's obviously it's about the protesting in Russia.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_01]: Every year lately, I've been trying to stay on top of the documentaries, feature documentaries that have the most buzz or the most awards.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I think for myself this year, I'm going to actually have seen at least some of the documentaries.
- 57:39[SPEAKER_01]: Not all.
- 57:40[SPEAKER_01]: But I'll have a good leg up.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_01]: I won't have to see all five this year.
- 57:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I had the turns out five, and I wasn't able to catch up to any of them.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_01]: And I was really pissed about it, but that's a me problem.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's not an Oscar's problem.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of people who were mad that their favorite documentary, which did get a lot of awards, whatever it may have been, didn't get this one.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_01]: Our favorite documentary, The Year Listers, wasn't even eligible.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_00]: No, we found it on YouTube.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_00]: We're looking for new places for these movies.
- 58:13[SPEAKER_00]: It kind of me has very stringent rules about what qualifies as something that's eligible for an Academy Award, Listers, because it's on YouTube.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's not even on their radar.
- 58:24[SPEAKER_00]: They don't care.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now, our job is critics to point that out.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_01]: The next category was best original score.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_01]: We're over halfway through the ceremony and I'm starting to think there's no hope for centers, but it finally won something.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_01]: one best the one best original score and well done indeed yes I feel music was a big part of it yeah um this was one of the two words uh i believe uh that were given out by the cast of bridesmaids except for Wendy McClendon Covey who was missed
- 58:57[SPEAKER_00]: inexplicably absent never expected to mention why she wasn't there she was it was some Is that so no just a friend of mine knew what was happening ever some sort of medical issue?
- 59:08[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no.
- 59:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah Well, I hope she or her family or whoever it is is okay In any case
- 59:15[SPEAKER_01]: uh... yet so the uh... but one is my route off was on stage and my route off is married to paltama sanderson that's right if they've gets to go and she was uh... giving out two awards that might have gone to all one bad laughter another didn't win either interesting uh... interesting woman uh... it was uh... best original score went to centers and i think that was a very very good choice although that is one of the categories actually would have been happy if one bad one after had one is johnny good yeah yeah yeah
- 59:41[SPEAKER_01]: There was a brave moment where I thought Hamlet was going to pull this out because Max Richter, who did the score for Hamlet, once again, reincorporated a famous bit of his previous music, that everyone loves and is like super dramatic and the climax of that movie, but was also used in the movie Arrival.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_01]: And Arrival was declared ineligible for best score because it used that music.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, interesting.
- 1:00:04[SPEAKER_01]: For some reason, Hamlet got away with it.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know why, it was a ratio issue.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was going to say, there's a percentage on sure that's on a piece of paper somewhere.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_01]: But I read some of those like brutally honest Oscar ballots and one person said, uh, I thought that score at the end of him that was amazing.
- 1:00:18[SPEAKER_01]: So of course I voted for it.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_01]: And then someone told me it was an eligible and I was like, well, I already voted.
- 1:00:25[SPEAKER_01]: Whoops, oh well, and then next up, best sound, which is another one that I thought might go classy.
- 1:00:33[SPEAKER_01]: Oh God, because sinners is obviously a big, it's got action, it's got music, serot, was a big international film with a lot of music and explosions in it, and I went to F1.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_01]: Good for you, F1.
- 1:00:47[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that was kind of a no brainer with that one.
- 1:00:50[SPEAKER_00]: No brainer.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was pretty competitive category.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think sinners, if sinners and one that we were not fair enough, I was very confident.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was going to be the most car movie.
- 1:00:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_00]: F1 was going to get something.
- 1:01:02[SPEAKER_00]: It was going to get, if it's not going to get visual effects, because it wasn't, because it was up against Avatar.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_00]: It was going to get some effects.
- 1:01:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I can't ask if it was just your voice to know that movie.
- 1:01:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's so hilarious.
- 1:01:30[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it's like, you know, wow.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_01]: I would like you if someone can isolate F1 the movie.
- 1:01:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like take out all the car effects.
- 1:01:38[SPEAKER_01]: I believe everything else in.
- 1:01:40[SPEAKER_01]: I will redub it.
- 1:01:42[SPEAKER_01]: with all of that, I will do that, but I need someone else to remove all the Santa because I don't know how to do that part, so one does that, I will do that, I don't know, I won't give it'll take, but I've got, I will do that, that'll be the chronic achievement of my entire life.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_00]: But the car's went from room, they went from for a very fast, I was no question, no, it was going to win.
- 1:02:06[SPEAKER_01]: Best editing.
- 1:02:08[SPEAKER_01]: You know, there's a there's a belief in the best editing category that's best editing almost always goes hand-in-hand with Best feature that's actually not strictly true and I think it's actually happened less than half of the time in the last 20 years But it feels true So I thought sinners was gonna win it because I thought sinners was gonna win best picture and one bad after another when I won I was like well fuck
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_01]: But you predicted F1, which would have been sort of like the cool though.
- 1:02:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:02:40[SPEAKER_01]: I predicted sinners and that was one bad laughter another.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_00]: What are you going to do?
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_00]: What are we going to do?
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_00]: Get it wrong.
- 1:02:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we did.
- 1:02:48[SPEAKER_01]: Well, two Shay, I suppose.
- 1:02:52[SPEAKER_01]: But next up, going hand in hand with editing was best cinematography.
- 1:02:56[SPEAKER_01]: Oh.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_00]: This is always tough because typically a lot of the cinematography awards
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_00]: are given to films that have goods in a cinematography.
- 1:03:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of films that have great cinematography.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, even, well, read the nominees because I think that would actually all look quite good.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was Frankenstein, great-looking movie.
- 1:03:15[SPEAKER_01]: Marty Supreme, great-looking movie.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:03:17[SPEAKER_01]: One battle after another, I appreciate what it did.
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_01]: Wasn't my fifth.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: Centers, great-looking movie, train dreams, great-looking movie.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_01]: Girl, great.
- 1:03:24[SPEAKER_01]: And there were only some of the great-looking movies.
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they would not have been upset at any of those.
- 1:03:30[SPEAKER_00]: The uniform was one battle.
- 1:03:31[SPEAKER_01]: I would not have been upset.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_01]: However, the academy, Kudos, for this at least, not only did they give it to sinners, which I think is a great, very worthy winner.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_01]: But the winner in the category, Autumn Derelled Archipel.
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_01]: It's the first woman to everyone best in a photography.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_00]: Woman ever.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:03:48[SPEAKER_01]: And first woman of color, while we're at it.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_01]: No, the first woman of person.
- 1:03:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's in general, but also no that that was a typo.
- 1:03:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was in the Hollywood reporter.
- 1:03:57[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, or no, it was deadline.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_00]: I believe Where they said it the first woman and the first woman of person to win some of the talk of it like Clearly they rushed the ad copy and weren't like being attention, but the first woman and first African American.
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah to ever win the Ecanware for best cinematography.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_01]: Only took 98 years
- 1:04:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, 98.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_01]: Buddy, you know what?
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_01]: She was great.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_01]: She was amazing cinematography.
- 1:04:22[SPEAKER_01]: She totally deserves it.
- 1:04:24[SPEAKER_01]: And she gave a great speech.
- 1:04:26[SPEAKER_01]: She was very moving.
- 1:04:27[SPEAKER_01]: It was a great historic moment.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_01]: And I started thinking maybe Rancookler can at least get best director.
- 1:04:34[SPEAKER_01]: Because that would also be historic.
- 1:04:36[SPEAKER_01]: No black filmmaker who's everyone best director in 98 years either.
- 1:04:42[UNKNOWN]: We'll get to that.
- 1:04:44[SPEAKER_01]: Best international feature was next.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_01]: And we both, yeah, we both were the sentimental value.
- 1:04:50[SPEAKER_01]: However, I do think this would this very easily could have gone to secret agent.
- 1:04:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it was also something to mention.
- 1:04:57[SPEAKER_00]: And to be fair, both the secret agent and sentimental value are some of my favorite movies of the year.
- 1:05:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think the secret agent is, even though it's getting, a lot of these awards attention, it's not, it's falling by the wayside underneath sentimental value.
- 1:05:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's still a great movie, but we're forgetting how fucking weird that movie is.
- 1:05:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really strangely structured movie, it's tone is really like weirdly laid back through a lot of times.
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_01]: There's a sequence right in the middle where all of a sudden we're in a horror movie about a severed leg.
- 1:05:29[SPEAKER_01]: It's a severed killer leg, it's killing people on a park and it doesn't feel like it's in the wrong film.
- 1:05:34[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's weird, but it doesn't really feel like a little to that moment, and then there's like really intense like just miniature vignettes that they kind of stick in there The whole scene with Udo Kier is really terrific.
- 1:05:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, God.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_01]: I was I wish they could have given an Oscar to Udo Kier just for that one scene I was I was really bummed obviously when they do the immemorial I'm sick once it's always a bummer because a lot of people wonderful people passed away And Udo Kier passed away this year and I was bummed because he didn't get his own slide.
- 1:06:00[SPEAKER_01]: No, he shared it with another guy
- 1:06:01[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, he's in an Oscar nominated best-pictured nominee this year.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:07[SPEAKER_01]: Give him a little a slide.
- 1:06:08[SPEAKER_00]: I know it's, I know the space is at a premium, but you get to decide these things.
- 1:06:13[SPEAKER_00]: And they tend to focus on a couple of filmmakers or actors who, I guess, they feel are particularly significant to the Academy Awards.
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_00]: They did it for Robert Redford.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_02]: OK.
- 1:06:25[SPEAKER_00]: It makes sense for Robert Redford, who founded the Sundance Institute, who's actually a big voice in promoting cinema.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_01]: It was an actor and a producer and a director, a lot of his movies were nominated.
- 1:06:37[SPEAKER_00]: They talked about Rob Wright, who also did a lot of really big heads.
- 1:06:40[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 1:06:41[SPEAKER_00]: I did find it quite amusing that they're going through his filmography, and then he did spinal tap, and then he did the princess sprite.
- 1:06:48[SPEAKER_00]: Not one mention of north.
- 1:06:50[SPEAKER_00]: They just skipped right over it I think even mentioned out of I think they even mentioned the bucket list which to be fair was a gigantic It was the last big hit.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_01]: Um, no, it was very moving That was all when they showed Catherine on heroin nearly cried
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanted them to do that with like Udo Kier, or carry her a Yuki Tagawa.
- 1:07:14[SPEAKER_01]: He got his own slide and he got more will combat into the Oscars.
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_01]: That was his most prominent role, and he's great in that movie, no arguments here.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's great in every movie.
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's just a wonderful actor.
- 1:07:25[SPEAKER_01]: But you know that some of the Oscars was like,
- 1:07:28[SPEAKER_01]: make it a clip from World Comic, World Comic, one for the kids, Shane's song himself.
- 1:07:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like, yeah, what's doing?
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_01]: Shane's song, right, and the, uh, yes, he was a shape-shifting bag guy who could turn him to anyone he'd ever killed, which is cool.
- 1:07:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's cool.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's fun.
- 1:07:45[SPEAKER_01]: We can all enjoy that.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I also appreciated that they gave a shout out to Drew Struzand.
- 1:07:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the poster painter like a creator all your favorite poster now.
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_01]: They did pretty good job the only one I was like really mad about was a Jean Hackman, but then I remember that he died so early in the year Though they put him in last year.
- 1:08:02[SPEAKER_01]: So fair But yeah, really really just very brutal terrible terrible terrifying year And I cut it right best original song with the K-pop demon hunters because of course
- 1:08:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, there was that song and four songs that were going to lose to it.
- 1:08:18[SPEAKER_01]: I know, and it's a bummer because actually, I think two of the songs were really, really great.
- 1:08:21[SPEAKER_01]: Centers, I lied to you, was an incredible performance at the Oscars and a great job, even capturing the life performance wasn't that good.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_01]: I was in a good job, I was in a good job, but that was a, I really liked the bit where after everyone's like dancing on stage and Jack O'Connell and the two other vampires show up, I was like, hey, can we join it?
- 1:08:37[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, no.
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_01]: I thought that was really cute.
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_01]: Jack O'Connell showed up in vampire fangs to the Oscars.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's fun.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's playing.
- 1:08:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's working for him.
- 1:08:46[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, it's that.
- 1:08:47[SPEAKER_01]: And also, I did an article for the rap last week, where I ranked every Oscar nominated song, Written or Co-Ritten by Diane Warren, which is 17 at this point.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_01]: She said more nominations without a win than anyone else in history.
- 1:09:05[SPEAKER_01]: and to be fair, a lot of those songs weren't amazing.
- 1:09:09[SPEAKER_01]: They're good, not amazing.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes the songs that were amazing were up against juggernauts.
- 1:09:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like, how do I live?
- 1:09:16[SPEAKER_01]: One of the most popular love songs of the 1990s was up against Titanic.
- 1:09:21[SPEAKER_01]: Of course it's gonna fucking lose.
- 1:09:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll go on, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:26[SPEAKER_01]: So like, that's tough, you know?
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_01]: But, you hear me?
- 1:09:28[SPEAKER_01]: No, what's the, where's it aerosmith?
- 1:09:29[SPEAKER_01]: It might have been, uh, I don't want to miss a thing that was up against me.
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I don't want to miss a thing was up against Titanic, I think.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_00]: Either way, it's like- No, it was the next year.
- 1:09:36[SPEAKER_00]: Was it?
- 1:09:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:09:38[SPEAKER_00]: Don't want to miss a thing was- Oh, I don't want to miss a thing.
- 1:09:40[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to miss a thing.
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to miss a thing.
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it lost to, uh, if you believe or when you believe from Prince of Egypt.
- 1:09:47[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's right.
- 1:09:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think- I think that one shouldn't want it.
- 1:09:50[SPEAKER_01]: That's okay, so- No, I- No, I think Eros mentioned one.
- 1:09:53[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you think Eros mentioned one?
- 1:09:53[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's a much more- It's a good song.
- 1:09:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think Eros mentioned a
- 1:09:59[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but her song from her own documentary is a documentary about Diane Warren called Diane Warren relentless about in which a big chunk is about how she's different one in us.
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, she wrote a song, it's a beautiful song about like sending a message to herself when she's a child and it's sung by Kesha and it's really really great.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually one of her better songs in the last like 20 years and of course nobody even fucking heard it because I didn't even let him perform it.
- 1:10:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's a bummer.
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Here's what I would like to do.
- 1:10:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to make a movie about Diane Warren, starring Diane Warren, and she's a vampire.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_00]: She gets attacked by a vampire at the beginning of the movie.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_00]: She has no recourse but to just continue living her life.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_00]: She can't go out during the day anymore and now she's immortal And she's just gonna keep on writing songs.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_00]: She's this is an opportunity.
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_00]: She just took it to keep writing songs Fast forward 600 years She is written 12 songs every year in the last 600 years and it has been nominated for Oscars every single time
- 1:11:09[SPEAKER_00]: and she wins so, and she is still not one, and she was convinced centuries ago that it's never gonna happen.
- 1:11:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it's this weird kind of hell for her now.
- 1:11:19[SPEAKER_00]: And we realize that the Academy only exists to keep vampires at bay, and the way to do it is to keep them in the public eye, but never actually give them their awards.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like this Freddie Kruger thing, they're like, hajured by stories,
- 1:11:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like a new nightmare or a Freddy Kruger can only break out into the real world if we start telling the story.
- 1:11:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's how we contain Diane Warren is by nominating and not awarding her.
- 1:11:44[SPEAKER_01]: that that's the only way this makes sense, you know Susan Lucci um uh was a uh well still it's but uh she's uh she was slightly nominated a lot and didn't win for a long long time.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah she was nominated she was uh uh so popper superstar uh everyone loved her one of the most biggest draws in all of daytime television she was nominated for 18 Emmy Awards before it's for a long time.
- 1:12:06[SPEAKER_01]: So Diane Warren is on the verge of beating Susan Lucey for the most most nominations and no wins.
- 1:12:14[SPEAKER_01]: Ooh, brutal.
- 1:12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I guess it's a bomber.
- 1:12:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's a good song.
- 1:12:18[SPEAKER_01]: I highly recommend checking it out.
- 1:12:19[SPEAKER_01]: Next up, we had Best Director.
- 1:12:22[SPEAKER_01]: And it was a battle really between nobody thought anyone but PTA or rank who they were going to win this.
- 1:12:30[SPEAKER_01]: And it's both of them is like kind of a legacy thing because PTA had been nominated for like
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_01]: a shit ton of Oscars that I never watched his movies always gotten nominated Yeah, everyone's nominated he'd already won one tonight so he's been branded so brand Couglar so we're already on an even kill here Ryan Couglar had never been nominated for Best Director before despite directing some of the most popular Movies of the last 15 years like Creed and Black Panther and now centers Also in the hits again in the history of the academy no black filmmaker has ever won Best Director
- 1:13:06[SPEAKER_01]: And the Academy thought we should give that to PTA.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I get it, but also one moment it would have been.
- 1:13:13[SPEAKER_01]: If you can't get an Oscar for best director, for directing the most Oscar nominated movie of all time, meaning every single field, it could possibly be nominated and it was nominated in.
- 1:13:30[SPEAKER_01]: And was at or near the pinnacle of motion
- 1:13:38[SPEAKER_01]: That doesn't deserve it.
- 1:13:41[SPEAKER_01]: And that's where it's like, I want to meritocracy starts getting weird for me.
- 1:13:45[SPEAKER_01]: Because it's like, I don't know, man, by your own, by your own volition, that's, you know, the most impressive accomplishment of the year.
- 1:13:51[SPEAKER_01]: You think about it?
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just, I got, I kept on getting flashbacks to the year green book, one of the most embarrassing best picture wins in all of the Academy history.
- 1:14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Not just not a great movie, but like regressive.
- 1:14:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like narratively dramatically, dramatically, socially and made by, uh,
- 1:14:17[SPEAKER_00]: made by a white filmmaker in a year when similar topics were being filmed by black filmmakers.
- 1:14:24[SPEAKER_00]: That was the year black clansman was up for a bunch of awards and black Panther and black Panther as well.
- 1:14:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, another round cooler film.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so
- 1:14:34[SPEAKER_01]: but they decided to give it to the film that sent her to white guy and was sent correct by white.
- 1:14:38[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly, about how racism is easy to solve.
- 1:14:42[SPEAKER_00]: Like this, it was this weird romantic idea about how racism is something that we can just put behind us now whereas these other films were a little bit more, even black Panther, the superhero thing with the special effects of the film.
- 1:14:56[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, it had actually addressed racial inequality better than Greenbow dead.
- 1:15:03[SPEAKER_00]: And green books were a real thing make a movie about that.
- 1:15:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a great idea.
- 1:15:07[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know, yeah I agree.
- 1:15:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's really really I think I got to I got to see a green book in a magazine and a museum recently I went to New York.
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_00]: I saw it in the library.
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think the one I don't think the one to one comparison if there is one is green book because at the very least of the quick and all agree one battle is better than green
- 1:15:24[SPEAKER_01]: One battle is better than agree.
- 1:15:25[SPEAKER_01]: Like a lot better than agree.
- 1:15:27[SPEAKER_00]: Getting hit with a switch is better than green book.
- 1:15:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:15:32[SPEAKER_00]: But what I'm thinking of is, the more I'm thinking about one battle after another, the safer I think it is that it is about, it's a bio-white filmmaker.
- 1:15:41[SPEAKER_00]: It centers the white characters.
- 1:15:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's about racial inequality, but it's being told in such a way that it's not demanding that the audience do anything about it.
- 1:15:49[SPEAKER_00]: that the villains are all these cartoons that are already taking care of themselves.
- 1:15:54[SPEAKER_01]: There are taking care of themselves, like the bad guy in that movie is ultimately defeated by white supremacists.
- 1:16:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, by the other bad guys.
- 1:16:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, like so, so there's it's not asking what a weird message.
- 1:16:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:16:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:16:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I compare that against sinners which is a film by a black filmmaker that is very expressly very explicitly about the co-opting of black culture by white monsters, literal monsters in this case, because they're vampires, obvious metaphor, sure, don't care.
- 1:16:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's a fucking awesome.
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_00]: And it's falling behind one battle after another and that's making me upset and of course
- 1:16:35[SPEAKER_01]: We only have a couple of categories left, so let's just crank through them.
- 1:16:39[SPEAKER_01]: The next up was best actor.
- 1:16:40[SPEAKER_01]: This was the last category that felt completely up in the air.
- 1:16:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like, there was a very realistic chance that Timothy Shalame wins this.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_01]: There was a very realistic chance that might be Jordan wins this.
- 1:16:50[SPEAKER_01]: There was a not unreasonable chance that Wagner Mora or Ethan Hawke win this, and it seemed like there was probably no chance Lena had to capre a win, but whatever.
- 1:17:00[SPEAKER_00]: Which makes me wonder, why do they, if there's not a chance?
- 1:17:03[SPEAKER_00]: I know, I bought her.
- 1:17:05[SPEAKER_01]: I was thinking about this.
- 1:17:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I was thinking about all the times that like, Meryl Streep felt like she was there because it was kind of a thin year.
- 1:17:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, and I don't mean to, obviously, Meryl Streep is brilliant actor and most of those times, I think, she at least deserved to be an nomination and at least in theory.
- 1:17:20[SPEAKER_01]: But I just think about who else could have really benefited from that in a more meaningful way than to Caprio.
- 1:17:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so, it bugs me, but anyway, in any case, it went to an actor who I really do feel like two weeks ago, people thought was like fourth in line and probability wise, but then he won at the best, the screen actor slash actor awards as they want to be called now and it was Michael B. Jordan and he got a fucking standing ovation and it was fucking great.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:17:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so glad it happened.
- 1:17:54[SPEAKER_00]: Did he deserve it?
- 1:17:55[SPEAKER_00]: Well, he wasn't sure it was gone.
- 1:17:56[SPEAKER_01]: He would have never been nominated before.
- 1:17:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's a fantastic actor.
- 1:17:59[SPEAKER_01]: He gave two arguably three amazing performances in that movie, because when one of them gets turned into a vampire, there are a group of a different character.
- 1:18:07[SPEAKER_01]: Mm, let's suppose so.
- 1:18:08[SPEAKER_01]: Doing it differently anyway.
- 1:18:09[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a really complicated, technical performance.
- 1:18:12[SPEAKER_01]: It's a really complicated performance on every single conceivable level, and he's utterly convincing at it.
- 1:18:18[SPEAKER_01]: You would, if you didn't know there weren't two Michael Jordan's, you might have thought they cast twins.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_01]: they're just seamless and credible work.
- 1:18:26[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know what?
- 1:18:28[SPEAKER_01]: One of that I really love about that award because A, he deserves its great performance.
- 1:18:32[SPEAKER_01]: B, people are really happy for him.
- 1:18:36[SPEAKER_01]: I think Timothy Shalom and he had won that award.
- 1:18:39[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people I'm like, yeah, it's a great actor.
- 1:18:40[SPEAKER_01]: Good friend.
- 1:18:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, I don't know about anything.
- 1:18:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not fond of but whatever.
- 1:18:44[SPEAKER_01]: He's a good actor.
- 1:18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Um,
- 1:18:46[SPEAKER_01]: There was a video of Michael B. Jordan going to in and out afterwards with his Oscar, which is a tradition, a bit of a tradition.
- 1:18:56[SPEAKER_01]: Which is adorable.
- 1:18:57[SPEAKER_01]: And he went in and out because there was an in and out only a couple of blocks away from where they give out the Academy Awards.
- 1:19:01[SPEAKER_01]: Um, he was that thing.
- 1:19:03[SPEAKER_01]: He was hitting out and first off, there's one picture of him like with like two cheese burgers in front of him and Oscar in one hand And he has got the biggest smile you've ever seen and he was like, he looks like he's six Like he's six years old.
- 1:19:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's six years old.
- 1:19:18[SPEAKER_01]: He's in my own Like I got two burgers Just I'm never gonna bring him like a little square of K I don't think I've ever been that happy in my entire life But the video when he was there and people were like the
- 1:19:30[SPEAKER_00]: What is standing there and greeting fans here?
- 1:19:32[SPEAKER_01]: Well, what a celebrity shows up in public and people would like make a big deal out of it.
- 1:19:35[SPEAKER_01]: Usually they're excited to see a celebrity.
- 1:19:37[SPEAKER_01]: That's a celebrity.
- 1:19:37[SPEAKER_01]: Like, oh, cool.
- 1:19:38[SPEAKER_01]: Charlie's there in his ear.
- 1:19:40[SPEAKER_01]: This is awesome.
- 1:19:40[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, look, it's Charlie's there.
- 1:19:42[SPEAKER_01]: Look, can we get a picture?
- 1:19:42[SPEAKER_01]: Charlie's there.
- 1:19:43[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:19:44[SPEAKER_01]: This wasn't.
- 1:19:45[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, cool.
- 1:19:46[SPEAKER_01]: Michael B. Jordan is here.
- 1:19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone was happy for him.
- 1:19:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's different.
- 1:19:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like if Tom Cruise showed up at a car wash, and everyone knows it was Tom Cruise, they would be like, cool, it's Tom Cruise, they wouldn't be like, I'm happy for you, Tom Cruise.
- 1:20:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's not the vibe we're in now.
- 1:20:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't think of Sean Pennib in that end, and now people have been thrilled for Sean Pennib.
- 1:20:11[SPEAKER_01]: It would have been kind of interesting to see Sean Pennib.
- 1:20:14[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone was just so fucking happy that that guy finally got in the wording that we've been nominated before.
- 1:20:18[SPEAKER_01]: That's fucking absurd.
- 1:20:20[SPEAKER_01]: He's great.
- 1:20:23[SPEAKER_01]: Some people have even said a fur veil station.
- 1:20:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think absolutely should have been on a fur fur veil station.
- 1:20:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great actor.
- 1:20:28[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so glad he has one good for him.
- 1:20:32[SPEAKER_01]: That, in some of the talk of my happiest ones of the night, then it went to Best Actress, which was Jesse Buckley.
- 1:20:38[SPEAKER_01]: She won all the others.
- 1:20:40[SPEAKER_00]: There was no surprise on favor.
- 1:20:42[SPEAKER_00]: It was gonna happen.
- 1:20:43[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, I'm not a huge fan of HamNet.
- 1:20:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think the movie understands Hamlet very well.
- 1:20:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's dramatically not very engaging.
- 1:20:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's good in it.
- 1:20:53[SPEAKER_01]: You have made the point that she kind of is like it's at a 10 like that entire movie.
- 1:20:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's an exaggeration, but it's a big performance, but she's in material that allows it.
- 1:21:04[SPEAKER_01]: And I think she fits that material.
- 1:21:06[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's playing what she's given.
- 1:21:08[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's fantastic.
- 1:21:09[SPEAKER_01]: She's brilliant actor.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_00]: Good for her.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_00]: The way I put it was, it's, it's whether or not it's the best acting.
- 1:21:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's definitely the most acting.
- 1:21:17[SPEAKER_00]: Like she just went way over the top with it.
- 1:21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:21:21[SPEAKER_00]: in a way that I think did, you know what?
- 1:21:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not gonna discredit Jesse Buckleib because she was doing as she was directed.
- 1:21:29[SPEAKER_00]: She was doing as the script to demand it over.
- 1:21:31[SPEAKER_00]: I just wanna give the movie what movie one.
- 1:21:33[SPEAKER_00]: I just think the script stuck.
- 1:21:34[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think they didn't know what Hamlet was about.
- 1:21:39[SPEAKER_00]: No, I agree.
- 1:21:39[SPEAKER_00]: They're trying to link it to Hamlet in ways that make no sense.
- 1:21:43[SPEAKER_00]: It was really fun.
- 1:21:44[SPEAKER_00]: No, it was really fun.
- 1:21:44[SPEAKER_01]: It was really fun.
- 1:21:45[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that's not her fault.
- 1:21:48[SPEAKER_01]: Much like Tana Taylor.
- 1:21:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think she's great.
- 1:21:50[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like the material.
- 1:21:51[SPEAKER_01]: She's great.
- 1:21:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:21:52[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like Jesse Buckley is amazing in a movie that isn't amazing.
- 1:21:56[SPEAKER_00]: And the fact that the bride, uh, tanked at the box office, which is unfortunate.
- 1:22:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because really, well, that movie.
- 1:22:03[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the right people have already found it.
- 1:22:06[SPEAKER_00]: And they're going to keep on finding it.
- 1:22:07[SPEAKER_00]: But it is a pity that it wasn't a hit.
- 1:22:09[SPEAKER_01]: But it didn't, it didn't nor bit her Oscar.
- 1:22:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I was going to say.
- 1:22:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:22:12[SPEAKER_00]: The failure of the bride did nothing to her, uh,
- 1:22:16[SPEAKER_01]: If you don't know what we're talking about in the late 2000s, Eddie Murphy finally got an Oscar nomination after many, many of your dream girls.
- 1:22:24[SPEAKER_00]: For dream girls, he's been.
- 1:22:26[SPEAKER_01]: He's been like rumored for it a bunch of times.
- 1:22:28[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people thought he should have been nominated for the nutty professor.
- 1:22:31[SPEAKER_01]: But it's comedy role because I don't feel bad.
- 1:22:33[SPEAKER_01]: He was finally nominated for dream girls and he was considered a very likely winner.
- 1:22:38[SPEAKER_01]: Not a guarantee, but very likely.
- 1:22:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then like a month before the Oscars, he was in a comedy called Norbit,
- 1:22:46[SPEAKER_00]: Panned relentlessly.
- 1:22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and he played it in like a big ol' fat suit, and it was full of like really obvious terrible like It's got a logical humor and
- 1:22:58[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people thought it killed his credibility, and maybe people not want to vote for him.
- 1:23:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how true that is, but that's the narrative, and I think there was a couple of people who were like, will the bride, nor bit Jesse Buckley, nor that was a verb.
- 1:23:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone, even if you don't like the bride, I don't know like Jesse Buckley is the problem.
- 1:23:14[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:23:14[SPEAKER_01]: I understand there are reasons not to think that movie works, and I understand that it being very big is one of them, but again, she's playing the material.
- 1:23:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is what she was asked to do.
- 1:23:25[SPEAKER_01]: and she can obviously play it down.
- 1:23:26[SPEAKER_01]: She's amazing in women talking.
- 1:23:28[SPEAKER_01]: She's amazing in the lost daughter.
- 1:23:30[SPEAKER_01]: She's a very, very nuanced actor.
- 1:23:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm really glad she got it.
- 1:23:33[SPEAKER_01]: First, I wish women to ever win an Oscar for best actors.
- 1:23:36[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 1:23:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:23:38[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:23:38[SPEAKER_01]: Another one.
- 1:23:39[SPEAKER_01]: That was one of that tonight.
- 1:23:40[SPEAKER_01]: And then lastly, best picture.
- 1:23:42[SPEAKER_01]: There was still a tiny chance centers who could win it.
- 1:23:44[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:23:45[SPEAKER_01]: One bad laughter or another.
- 1:23:47[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, the, the, the, I've made my complaints.
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_01]: We've read the, we've read the TV as we know what the Oscars want here.
- 1:23:54[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, you know, I, I know they're really happy about it.
- 1:23:58[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, in, I think in years to come, I don't, I think one battle, beating winners isn't going to be one of those Oscar choices that we look back on and say nailed it.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 1:24:10[SPEAKER_01]: Um, The other thing I was thinking about as I was watching, um,
- 1:24:17[SPEAKER_01]: their the final acceptance speeches.
- 1:24:19[SPEAKER_01]: What's here is a movie that is ostensibly about stuff, right?
- 1:24:23[SPEAKER_01]: ostensibly it's about revolution, standing up against ice and conservative, what is the premises and charge of everything?
- 1:24:30[SPEAKER_00]: It uses like Trump, you're an imagery.
- 1:24:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's supposed to Trump movie, which I think is, you know, we can at least give it credit for being timely, jump up to date.
- 1:24:40[SPEAKER_01]: But dressing things that are happening today, but I was reminded of when Amelia Perez was nominated I was last year.
- 1:24:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I want to academy awards.
- 1:24:49[SPEAKER_01]: I agree with neither of them, but especially the best song That's awesome.
- 1:24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's for me.
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's pretty accurate.
- 1:24:54[SPEAKER_01]: So it's all that is great I don't think she was particularly great in that movie, but whatever, she's good But I remember being very disappointed that here was a movie
- 1:25:04[SPEAKER_01]: was ostensibly about trans people, and what they go through.
- 1:25:09[SPEAKER_00]: Start a trans actor.
- 1:25:10[SPEAKER_01]: Start a trans actor.
- 1:25:12[SPEAKER_01]: First, first openly trans actor nominated for an Academy Award that I'm aware of, that's for acting.
- 1:25:17[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway,
- 1:25:20[SPEAKER_01]: And no one who worked on that movie who won an Oscar mentioned trans people are what they were going through when they were there.
- 1:25:26[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 1:25:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I noticed that no one who won an Oscar for one battle after another made a thing about the movie's politics.
- 1:25:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's... That felt like at least a missed opportunity.
- 1:25:36[SPEAKER_01]: It worse than it looked like they didn't have the strength of their convictions to me.
- 1:25:38[SPEAKER_00]: This is another complaint about how it's such a...
- 1:25:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to use the word cowardly, but it is, uh, uh, pulling its punches.
- 1:25:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:25:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:25:50[SPEAKER_00]: Not as strong as, as other films.
- 1:25:52[SPEAKER_00]: Much safer than it looks on the surface.
- 1:25:55[SPEAKER_00]: I, uh, I've heard from far too many people.
- 1:25:58[SPEAKER_00]: Some professional critics, even, about how politics need to remain clear of entertainment.
- 1:26:10[SPEAKER_00]: uh... which is no politics under no but an article entertainment is politics all art that is made anywhere ever is political it had it's springs from the society that made it this is what you're saying out there's this is what i'm saying it in response to that accusation uh... and i hear from a lot of people that they don't want to hear
- 1:26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Actors or filmmakers make any kind of political statements when they have an audience of a billion people watching on television
- 1:26:43[SPEAKER_00]: Why else are we here?
- 1:26:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not here for the opulence and I don't understand that these are not serious contenders about a film's quality.
- 1:26:55[SPEAKER_00]: I understand that this is kind of a footnote in film history that we're always going to pay attention to.
- 1:27:01[SPEAKER_01]: And certainly it's also not all of them but a lot of rich people bat patting themselves on the back.
- 1:27:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's wealthy people dressing up in rich clothing, giving each other golden statues about what a great job they've done.
- 1:27:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 1:27:13[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of that is there.
- 1:27:15[SPEAKER_00]: As you pointed out, this was also that the film industry wouldn't humanize.
- 1:27:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:27:20[SPEAKER_01]: They created the Oscars at least so hard to be a distraction for people in the industry so that they would be thinking about something else other than standing up for themselves against the studio system.
- 1:27:31[SPEAKER_00]: They have a political origin.
- 1:27:34[SPEAKER_00]: If you make a political speech at the Academy Awards, you get to fly in the face of that.
- 1:27:39[SPEAKER_00]: Also, all of these people, they're not politicians, but they are people that have political points of view and opinions.
- 1:27:47[SPEAKER_00]: And if they have the platform and are going to use it for a positive thing, then do that, do it all night, especially now.
- 1:27:55[SPEAKER_00]: when we're bombing other countries and we have fascism like on the rise, everywhere in the world, this is the time.
- 1:28:01[SPEAKER_00]: No, not that we had a film that came out and ostensibly got a lot of awards attention because it was addressing that directly, because it was speaking to the modern time, because it was actually pointing out what buffoons fascists actually are.
- 1:28:16[SPEAKER_00]: And when people get up and start winning awards and don't say a damn thing,
- 1:28:20[SPEAKER_00]: about how that is continuing to go or what the point of that movie was, they failed and it just shows that the film wasn't about that at all.
- 1:28:28[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that feels like a slight exaggeration, but it just makes me feel like they didn't mean it as much as they just did.
- 1:28:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that for me makes me start questioning the movie.
- 1:28:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I don't know if I necessarily think everyone needs to make a political statement at the Oscars.
- 1:28:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's a personal choice.
- 1:28:44[SPEAKER_01]: You can get to if you have the opportunity
- 1:28:51[SPEAKER_01]: And you don't mention the politics of it because you just want an award for politics.
- 1:28:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:28:56[SPEAKER_01]: One bad laughter or another is a very political film, like literally like on its surface.
- 1:29:02[SPEAKER_01]: Do not mention what's in the movie is weird.
- 1:29:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't expect to necessarily, like, the sound guy from F1 to necessarily, like, say, like, you know, as we all know, F1 really was, you know, important, environmentalist message.
- 1:29:18[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, no, that wasn't really in there.
- 1:29:20[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you were obligated, but like, if you did do something that was really, you know,
- 1:29:27[SPEAKER_01]: at a statement.
- 1:29:29[SPEAKER_01]: This is an opportunity to make that statement and I think not making that statement is again personal choice, but I think the least it's a missed opportunity.
- 1:29:35[SPEAKER_01]: And at worst, especially when you have this many opportunities.
- 1:29:38[SPEAKER_01]: If you're like, oh, I only have 30 seconds and I fucked up.
- 1:29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, fine.
- 1:29:41[SPEAKER_01]: Paul Thomas Anderson was up there three times.
- 1:29:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's three fucking chances and it really didn't.
- 1:29:47[SPEAKER_01]: And that felt to me like a real bummer.
- 1:29:51[SPEAKER_01]: The other thing I think about when I think about like how safe it was.
- 1:29:55[SPEAKER_01]: And there were a few jokes throughout the night, however I burned down, and a few other people said, you know, out-reli-political things, but overall, people were playing it pretty safe.
- 1:30:04[SPEAKER_01]: The last few years in particular, I feel like the Oscars gave up on the idea that they're not owned by Disney.
- 1:30:13[SPEAKER_01]: because there was a time when it was considered inappropriate to like have like movie trailers and the commercials for the Oscars, just because, you know, studios are vying for attention here.
- 1:30:26[SPEAKER_01]: You're giving extra, you know, I remember there was one year when, I think there was Jeff Bridges, was nominated and they wanted to like, whatever car company he was doing a voiceover for.
- 1:30:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
- 1:30:39[SPEAKER_01]: But they wouldn't let his voice over
- 1:30:43[SPEAKER_01]: And because he's nominated, it feels like a conflict of interest.
- 1:30:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know if there was ever a heart and a fast rule, but a best it was considered gauche.
- 1:30:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like in the last few years they've given up on that.
- 1:30:56[SPEAKER_01]: And I think the thing that's darted this, that was like the most like up we gave up.
- 1:31:01[SPEAKER_01]: Because it used to be like, okay, Jim Carrey has a new movie and theaters this weekend.
- 1:31:04[SPEAKER_01]: Jim Carrey presents an Oscar whether he's nominated or not he never was.
- 1:31:08[SPEAKER_01]: So like, okay fine, pretty wild.
- 1:31:10[SPEAKER_01]: And they do that a lot like the here's two stars of a movie that doesn't come out Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah when when when when Robert Danny Jr And it was Chris Evans presented on a word other was the screenplay words and They had a whole bit about hey, you didn't get me a gift for the 14th anniversary of the Avengers and I'm like wow We are really trying That's like huge fucking reach.
- 1:31:32[SPEAKER_01]: That's not even a good premise.
- 1:31:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, you couldn't come up
- 1:31:34[SPEAKER_01]: with better Marvel themed banter than that?
- 1:31:37[SPEAKER_01]: That wasn't great, but when they made a big fucking deal about grogobing in the audience for a character who today has only ever been on a TV show and it's about to be in a movie.
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and a movie who success or lack thereof could determine the future of Star Wars and Daeders?
- 1:31:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I feel like the one that really kicked it off was there was a time a few years ago when they introduced, okay, here are the two stars of the upcoming live action remake of the Little Mermaid.
- 1:32:09[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:32:09[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, bog standard movies coming up.
- 1:32:13[SPEAKER_01]: They're up to introducing an award, I guess, or maybe one of the nominated songs and then they get up there and the introduced in the middle of the Oscars.
- 1:32:22[SPEAKER_01]: Not even a commercial break.
- 1:32:26[SPEAKER_01]: A preview of the Little Mermaid.
- 1:32:27[SPEAKER_01]: or movie that's not out here.
- 1:32:28[SPEAKER_01]: Movie that's not out yet.
- 1:32:29[SPEAKER_01]: That's not nominated for anything.
- 1:32:34[SPEAKER_01]: What?
- 1:32:35[SPEAKER_01]: So when I saw the Grogu stuff, I was like, oh God, the fuck on.
- 1:32:39[SPEAKER_01]: And even like the Avengers stuff started feeling bad.
- 1:32:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, they made a lot of talk.
- 1:32:44[SPEAKER_01]: There was a lot of talk about how the Oscars are moving to YouTube, going on a Brian made a lot of jokes.
- 1:32:48[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, with that going to do a great job as a host.
- 1:32:50[SPEAKER_01]: I was able to find it.
- 1:32:51[SPEAKER_01]: I like the opening weapon spit, that was hilarious.
- 1:32:56[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of talking about how in a couple of years, the Oscars are moving to YouTube.
- 1:33:02[SPEAKER_01]: Bring it on.
- 1:33:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:33:05[SPEAKER_01]: First off, there will be, I don't know, did you watch the actor awards, which aired, I think, on Netflix?
- 1:33:10[SPEAKER_01]: I did not.
- 1:33:10[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so the actor awards move to streaming and no one played anyone off the stage.
- 1:33:18[SPEAKER_01]: Cause we weren't cutting to a commercial.
- 1:33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if it was a shit.
- 1:33:22[SPEAKER_01]: Who gives a shit, like, just say your piece.
- 1:33:27[SPEAKER_01]: like one of the songwriters I think from K-pop demon hunters that's right and they didn't like give them a chance to come back or anything like that I'm like this fucking sucks man what the fuck so i say honestly like and honestly i just hope that when they bring it to youtube that they start letting youtube shorts be qualified for best short films
- 1:33:45[SPEAKER_01]: There'd be nice.
- 1:33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Wouldn't that be, wouldn't it be weird if they weren't?
- 1:33:48[SPEAKER_00]: My ultimate dream is to have all of the awards, including all the technical awards in just this one gigantic chunk of six-hour television.
- 1:33:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:33:55[SPEAKER_00]: The idea that it needs to be done in a certain time is ridiculous.
- 1:33:58[SPEAKER_00]: The people who are watching want to see everything.
- 1:33:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:34:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know who these imaginary people are that the programmers think they're trying to appeal to and by making this show shorter.
- 1:34:07[SPEAKER_01]: Some of it's common in the network.
- 1:34:08[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:34:09[SPEAKER_01]: We have a show that's put on day-to-day afterwards.
- 1:34:12[SPEAKER_01]: We want it done by a certain time, but I don't care.
- 1:34:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, that's their problem.
- 1:34:16[SPEAKER_00]: Go on as long as you like.
- 1:34:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:34:19[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that it's, yeah, it's just, it's been so, so frustrating, just watching them kind of blendly play out.
- 1:34:28[SPEAKER_01]: Well, when they only played two of this year's nominated songs, and then they said, if you scan the QR code, you can listen to the other ones.
- 1:34:36[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, they could have done that on YouTube already.
- 1:34:38[SPEAKER_01]: Also, what the fuck?
- 1:34:40[SPEAKER_01]: You used to at least do a medley.
- 1:34:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is bullshit.
- 1:34:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like there's no excuse to cut the performances out if you're on YouTube.
- 1:34:48[SPEAKER_01]: There's no excuse to not show the Lifetime Achievement Awards.
- 1:34:51[SPEAKER_01]: Think about all of the people who've like won an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement or some other humanitarian work or whatever, who would have been a huge draw.
- 1:35:01[SPEAKER_01]: Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar competitively.
- 1:35:03[SPEAKER_01]: He won one this year.
- 1:35:07[SPEAKER_01]: But it was not like a competitive Oscar, so they didn't air it.
- 1:35:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, you don't think people would have wanted to see that?
- 1:35:14[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be like, kind of like, flown in on a fucking bi-play or some shit?
- 1:35:18[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'm just like Samuel Jackson won on Academy Award.
- 1:35:21[SPEAKER_01]: Angela Bassett won on Academy Award.
- 1:35:23[SPEAKER_01]: I won on Academy Award, but they weren't allowed to be on stage at least bring that back.
- 1:35:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's all I hope for.
- 1:35:29[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, the final tally, by the way.
- 1:35:33[SPEAKER_01]: I do poorly every year, but I did, you've been, what's your choice?
- 1:35:40[SPEAKER_00]: Totally poorly.
- 1:35:40[SPEAKER_01]: You've been made before.
- 1:35:43[SPEAKER_01]: So it was between you and me and Kate, who isn't here to record.
- 1:35:48[SPEAKER_01]: But, um,
- 1:35:49[SPEAKER_01]: If you look in our Patreon page, that's where predictions were.
- 1:35:52[SPEAKER_01]: Kate, who were credit or had not seen old nominees and a lot of them were just sort of shots in the dark chaos energy.
- 1:35:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:35:58[SPEAKER_01]: She, her pick to win Best Adapted Screenplay was no other choice because the nominees were kind of like she was never going to win it, but she's right, that would have been better choice.
- 1:36:11[SPEAKER_01]: She got 9 out of 24 which is pretty respectable.
- 1:36:14[SPEAKER_01]: You got 11 out of 24 and I got 16 out of 24.
- 1:36:17[SPEAKER_01]: Almost exclusively because I thought sinners would sweep it.
- 1:36:21[SPEAKER_01]: Almost exclusively was because of that.
- 1:36:26[SPEAKER_01]: Still mad.
- 1:36:29[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, that's the Academy Awards for the year.
- 1:36:32[SPEAKER_01]: Award season is finally over.
- 1:36:34[SPEAKER_01]: Let us never speak of it again.
- 1:36:36[SPEAKER_01]: Unless you want to talk about it, and we've got mail.
- 1:36:38[SPEAKER_01]: We have a podcast called We've Got Mail, where we read your emails, we answer your questions, we debate topics, we would like us to debate, we recommend movies, whatever you want us to talk about.
- 1:36:47[SPEAKER_01]: The podcast is your oyster.
- 1:36:49[SPEAKER_01]: You can send us an email or email addresses, letters at criticallyclamed.net.
- 1:36:52[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 1:36:53[SPEAKER_01]: You can talk about anything we discussed in this episode.
- 1:36:55[SPEAKER_01]: Anything about the Academy Awards?
- 1:36:56[SPEAKER_01]: Would you send anything at all?

- 1:37:25[SPEAKER_01]: One of you knows what you did, we got it, and we'll talk about it in the next episode of that.
- 1:37:30[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully we'll have that out this week.
- 1:37:33[SPEAKER_01]: We will be back with another critically acclaimed next weekend because of the Oscars and much other stuff going on.
- 1:37:39[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't see a lot of movies this week, so we're going to push that to next week.
- 1:37:43[SPEAKER_01]: Those proper movie reviews that we normally do, but we also have a new episode of the Iron List coming out as
- 1:37:49[SPEAKER_01]: Pretty soon, we're going to do something a little different this time, our patrons voted for a different format where we're going to, instead of giving our top 10s, we're both going to competitively sort of rank the filmography of a filmmaker and the filmography of our patrons chose was John Carpenter.
- 1:38:06[SPEAKER_00]: which luckily we've seen most of his movies already.
- 1:38:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:38:10[SPEAKER_00]: Less homework than other filmmakers.
- 1:38:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:38:11[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to go whole hog and even like do is like TV movies, which I hadn't seen.
- 1:38:15[SPEAKER_01]: So like I'm, this gives me an opportunity to do that.
- 1:38:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's, that's exciting.
- 1:38:19[SPEAKER_01]: And much of this stuff as well.
- 1:38:20[SPEAKER_01]: And again, head on over to a Patreon page, patreon.com slash critically claim network.
- 1:38:24[SPEAKER_01]: Free subscription gets your weekly newsletter.
- 1:38:27[SPEAKER_01]: Any, any paid subscription gets you ad free episodes, chance to vote for stuff, and a ton.
- 1:38:35[SPEAKER_01]: like like hundreds of hundreds of not over 1,000 thick slurs of backouts, or over there.
- 1:38:41[SPEAKER_01]: Listen to them all.
- 1:38:43[SPEAKER_01]: You'll be good.
- 1:38:44[SPEAKER_01]: If you've content is what you want, by God, you'll be content.
- 1:38:49[SPEAKER_01]: And, and, and, and, yeah, look at this.
- 1:38:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:38:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 1:38:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 1:38:55[SPEAKER_01]: Never forget, everyone is a critic.
- 1:39:00[UNKNOWN]: I want to go to the midnash show.
- 1:39:02[UNKNOWN]: I'm sorry, what?
